No suspicion over death of Loya: Son
Mumbai, Jan 14 (PTI) The son of special CBI judge B H Loya today said he had earlier been suspicious about his father’s sudden death, but now no longer harboured doubts. Anuj Loya, 21, said he did not have any doubts about the way his father died three years ago. “I had an emotional turmoil, hence I had suspicions about his death. But now we don’t have any doubts about the way he died,” the son of the late judge told reporters here. Judge Loya, who was hearing the sensitive Sohrabuddin Sheikh “fake encounter” case, had allegedly died of a cardiac arrest in Nagpur on December 1, 2014, when he had gone to attend the wedding of a colleague’s daughter. “Earlier my grandfather and aunt had some doubts about his death, which they shared. But now neither of them has any doubts,” Anuj said.

Netanyahu visits India
NEW DELHI, Jan 14 (IANS/PTI): Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi on Sunday broke protocol to personally receive his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu with a hug as he arrived here to begin a six-day visit that will also take him to Mumbai and Gujarat. As Netanyahu and his wife Sara stepped on the red carpet, a smiling Modi embraced the Israeli leader and then shook hands with the couple. “Very much appreciate the gesture,” the Jerusalem Post quoted Netanyahu as saying. This is the first visit to India by an Israeli Prime Minister since Ariel Sharon visited the country in 2003. The visit marks 25 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and takes place about six months after Modi’s trip to Israel, the first by an Indian prime minister to the Jewish state. Netanyahu will be visiting Delhi, Agra, Gujarat and Mumbai and will be accompanied by Modi on extensive portions of his visit, a press statement said. He will hold meetings with President Ram Nath Kovind and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj,

apart from Modi. Several MoUs, including in the field of oil and gas, renewable energy, amended protocol for airports, cyber security, and co-production of films and documentaries, will be signed between the two sides. Netanyahu and Modi are expected to discuss a variety of subjects related to bilateral relations and the global situation. The two leaders also laid a wreath and signed the visitor’s book at the memorial. BJP condemns Congress’s ‘Hugplomacy’ video The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday condemned the meme video released by Congress that purportedly attempts to highlight the “awkwardness” in Prime Minister Narendra Modi hugging various world leaders. Union Minister and senior BJP leader Prakash Javadekar said that the kind of video that has been posted “does not behove a mature political party”. Earlier in the day, the Congress posted the video on its official Twitter handle.
BJP does not have solution for us: Therie DIMAPUR, JAN 14 (NPN): Following the interview Union Home Minister of State, Kiren Rijiju gave to The Hindu, excerpts of which were published in this paper on January 12, NPCC president, K. Therie, has launched a scathing attack at the BJP saying that the BJP had no solution for the Nagas. In a press release, Therie recalled that Rijiju had once stated that the Government of India would do everything to keep the negotiations and peace alive and alleged that “they do not have a solution for us.” He further alleged that Rijiju could not reveal the status of the peace talks because he “does not know what they are talking about.” Therie said that Rijiju should stop persecuting the nation’s Christians, church demolitions, hate campaigns and also free the foreign contributions towards missionary works like hospitals, schools, colleges, scholarships for theological students and charity works.
AAP eyes footprint in Northeast New Delhi, Jan 14 (PTI): Tasting little success in expanding its footprint at the national level, the Aam Aadmi Party has set its sights on the Northeast where Assembly polls are due in four States this year. AAP will contest all the seats in Nagaland, Meghalaya and a few seats in Tripura, its leader Habung Payeng, looking after the northeastern affairs, said. Later this year, it also plans to contest polls in Mizoram. The move comes following the party’s attempts to make it big at the national level by contesting polls in Punjab and Goa. It had also contested 29 seats in Gujarat. However, except Punjab, where the party won 20 seats, it has not been able to make inroads into other States. The party also intends to contest polls in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. Asked about the agenda the party plans to contest on, Mr. Payeng said, “We have decided to contest on all seats in Nagaland and Meghalaya and on a few seats in Tripura.”
Can’t change dynamics of relations: Netanyahu
Targeting Rijiju’s statement that they did not want to link the talks with elections, Therie alleged that this was because the BJP had no answer for the Parliament. He further accused the BJP of trying to prolong the situation and “let generations perish expecting new generations will change their minds.” He was of the view that people should not be confused by the BJP’s promises of peace and development because they have nothing to give and that the promises are hollow and unrealistic while also accusing them of being unable to maintain existing roads and infrastructure. He added that “we cannot continue to suffer under the present situations.” Therie further said that Nagaland voters had to realize that the NPF was a spent force whose infighting would continue “till death does them apart.” He also alleged that the 12th state assembly had drawn Nagaland “backwards to pre-statehood period.”
New Delhi, Jan 14 (IANS): Just one negative vote at UN cannot change the dynamics of Indian-Israeli relations between India and Israel, visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said here on Sunday, terming relations with India as “marriage made in heaven”. “I don’t think one vote affects a general trend you can see in many other votes and everything and these visits,” Netanyahu said when asked to comment on India’s vote at UN against US decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, in an interview on India Today TV channel. “Yes, naturally we were disappointed, but this visit is a testimony that our relationship is moving on so many fronts, be it political, technological, tourism, security and so many other areas. Ultimately you see it reflected in all UN votes, not just now but soon,” he added. In December last year, India voted in favour of a resolution brought by Turkey and Yemen in the UN opposing the United States’ decision recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The resolution was approved with 127-9 at the UN General Assembly.
NJCF urges PM to exercise ‘wisdom’ DIMAPUR, JAN 14 (NPN): Nagaland Joint Christian Forum (NJCF), has joined various Naga civil societies, tribal organizations, MPs and legislators to urge upon Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, to “exercise wisdom and discernment” to bring about an honourable and acceptable solution while addressing the “Indo-Naga” conflict. NJCF which comprises of church denominations in Nagaland has sought to impress upon the prime minister the urgent need to address the Naga issue by listening to the voice of the people who yearn for peace and pleaded for ensuring that solution took precedence of election. The memorandum signed by NJCF president and NBCC general secretary Rev.Dr.Zelhou Keyho, NJCF general secretary Rev. Fr. G. L. Khing, vice president Rev. Dr. N. Paphino, treasurer Rev. Dr. Moses Murry, and executive members Rev. Hotokhu P. Zhimomi, Rev. T. W. Yamyap Konyak and Khyomo Lotha (ex-MP), urged upon Modi to exercise wisdom and discernment while dealing with the present scenario in Nagaland so that the hard earned dialogue and
resolution the Bar passed on Saturday. The resolution also suggested a Full Court meeting to resolve the matter. Two days after the crisis began, a seven-member delegation of the Bar Council of India (BCI) on Sunday also met the Chief Justice to convey its concern over the issue. The BCI also met three of the four rebel judges. “We hope that the issue will be sorted out amicably and no one from outside should interfere,” BCI President Manan Kumar Mishra told reporters. “During the meetings with Justice Misra, Justice Chelameswar, Justice Lokur, Justice Joseph and other judges, each one of them assured us that the issues will be resolved. The meetings with the judges took place in a very cordial atmosphere.” Justices Sharad Arvind Bobde and L. Nageswara Rao also met Justice Chelameswar at his residence. As the crisis lingered, four retired judges wrote to Justice Misra on
Sunday, throwing their weight behind the four rebel judges who “have brought to light a serious issue regarding the manner of allocation of cases, particularly sensitive cases, to various benches of the Supreme Court”. The retired judges are Justice P.B. Sawant, a former Supreme Court judge, Justice A.P. Shah, former Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, Justice K. Chandru, a former judge of the Madras High Court, and Justice H. Suresh, a former judge of the Bombay High Court. They appreciated the “grave concern” raised by the four Supreme Court judges that cases were not being allocated in a proper manner and “arbitrarily” allocated to “particular designated benches, often headed by junior judges”. “This is having a very deleterious effect on the administration of justice and the rule of law,” read the letter by the four former judges. They said they agreed with the view of the rebel
that any interference into the negotiations with another issue, while the negotiation was accelerating and gaining momentum, would take the negotiations back to square one and could cause mistrust and suspicion of both the intentions of the government of India and the Modi’s personal good will. NJCF urged upon the prime minister to take “the mandate of the Nagas” very seriously and that the PM’s office must act with “wisdom and precision” without introducing any element that may thwart the negotiation process. Further, invoking God, NJCF said that there was no agenda more important for the Nagas than finding an amicable solution and therefore, urged upon the prime minister to sincerely listen to the people’s voice. NJCF said that its prayers were with the prime minister, the Naga leaders and those involved in the peace process and invoked God’s wisdom upon the prime minister so that “God’s will for the Nagas” is imposed through his leadership. “The Nagas long to seize this moment so that a better society will emerge in our life time” the memorandum asserted.
BJP, RSS leaders meet over polls in 3 north eastern states New Delhi, Jan 14 (PTI): Several BJP and RSS leaders Sunday met at the residence of Home Minister Rajnath Singh here to hold deliberations on the upcoming assembly polls in three northeastern states -- Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland. Besides Singh, Krishna Gopal, a senior RSS functionary, and BJP general secretary Ram Madhav, who oversees his party’s affairs in the Northeast, were among the leaders present at the meeting. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval also attended the meeting. Though details of the deliberations were not immediately clear, sources said the political situation in the region was at the centre of the discussion. In Tripura, where
Full Court expected to resolve SC crisis N ew D elhi , Ja n 1 4 (IANS): All 25 Supreme Court judges are expected to meet soon to resolve the crisis in the country’s apex court after four senior-most judges complained against Chief Justice Dipak Misra over allocation of cases. Informed sources told IANS that a Full Court meeting of the Supreme Court judges will take place at the earliest to take a call on the issue and deliberate over the complaints highlighted in public by the four judges -- Justices J. Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan B. Lokur and Kurian Joseph -- who are the senior-most after Justice Misra in that order. The rebel judges criticised the Chief Justice over allocation of cases, saying the administration of the top court was “not in order”. As there was no solution in sight, Supreme Court Bar Association President Vikas Singh met Justice Misra and gave him a copy of the
negotiations (with various NPGs) did not derail. Expressing appreciation for the PM’s efforts and his concern for resolving the protracted “Indo-Naga” conflict, NJCF pointed out that the unresolved problem and untreated conflicts over the last seven decades had led the Nagas into a state of confusion. However, they said that after Modi took it upon himself to recognise the Naga struggle as a political struggle and recognising the historical and political rights of Nagas, it has raised the hopes of the Nagas. NJCF said such a recognition which had created a space, had allowed the Nagas to exercise their collective wisdom and effort for the first time in the history of the Naga political struggle. The signatories further reiterated that Nagas longed for a solution within that space and as such, the present peace process must take the “utmost priority” without interference. NJCF termed the Framework Agreement, signed with the NSCN (I-M), on August 3, 2015, and the on-going negotiations with the Working Committee of the Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) as “positive moves”. It also opined
judges that the Chief Justice despite being the master of roster cannot assign cases “in an arbitrary manner such that, sensitive and important cases are sent to hand-picked benches of junior judges by the Chief Justice”. “This issue needs to be resolved... for allocation of benches and distribution of cases, which are rational, fair and transparent. Only such measures would assure the people that the Supreme Court is functioning in a fair and transparent manner and that the power of the Chief Justice as master of roster is not being misused to achieve a particular result in important and sensitive cases. We, therefore, urge you to take immediate steps in this regard.” Meanwhile, the Co-ordination Committee of All District Bar Associations of Delhi on Sunday condemned the four senior Supreme Court judges for going public over their differences with Justice Misra.
the stakes are high for the BJP, the party is likely to ally with the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), which represents a section of the state’s tribal population. The Union home minister had recently assured it of forming a high-powered committee to look into their demands aimed at protecting and promoting socio-economic and cultural interests of the state’s indigenous population. Though the IPFT has long sought a separate state for tribals, the BJP leadership has made it clear that it does not support the demand. Following Singh’s assurance to the IPFT leadership, its president N C Debbarma had on Thursday announced a tie-up with the BJP for the polls.
The BJP is yet to make an announcement. Debbarma had said his party would keep the separate state demand in abeyance for now as the central government had agreed to examine their problems and take corrective measures. The BJP has emerged as the main challenger to the ruling Left Front in Tripura. In Meghalaya and Nagaland, two Christianmajority states, the BJP hopes to put up a good performance, especially in the former, where the Congress is in power. The Naga People’s Front, which is in power in Nagaland, is a BJP ally. The terms of Tripura, Meghalaya, and Nagaland officially ends on March 6, 13, and 14, respectively.
Stereotypes SAH supports make NE people Tseminyu district demand uncomfortable: panel DIMAPUR, JAN 14 (NPN): Sumi KOLKATA, JAN 14 (IANS): Poets, researchers, photographers from the northeastern states on Sunday decried the stereotypes the rest of the country have of them and said the ‘northeast’ tag attached to them often becomes a cause of discomfort. “People residing in that part of the country are not aware of the term ‘northeast’ so much as the people who have migrated elsewhere in the country. In my case, the term was constantly hurled at me during conversations in Delhi. So much that I stopped telling people about where I am actually form,” Zubeni Lotha, a photographer from Nagaland, said at a session in Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival here. “I think it is a tag that has got attached to us due to the idea of directional category. Even though we are at the centre of the peripheral region, we often refer to that as northeast,” said Haripriya Soibam, a poet from Assam.
Aphuyemi Hoho (SAH), Pughoboto, has come out in strong support of the Rengma tribe’s demand to upgrade Tseminyu subdivision into a district. A press release from SAH secretary, Toniho Sheqi, agreed that the demand was logical and reasonable and merited positive attention from the government. SAH opined that the Rengmas, being one of the major tribes of Nagaland, deserved due recognition considering their significant contributions to the social and political aspects of the state. The SAH further suggested that upgrading Tseminyu sub-division into a district would solve many administrative inconveniences faced by the Rengma people. The press release listed the “oldest sub-divisions under the set up of Nagaland government” as: Pughoboto, Tseminyu, Aboi, Kiphire, Longleng, Peren and Noklak, and said that four of these had been upgraded into districts while the other three had been overlooked. Citing these reasons, the hoho made a “fervent appeal” to the state government to listen to the voice of the people and hasten the up-gradation process. K Y M C
