Madrid substitute Rodrygo pulled a goal back in the 81st to make it 4-2 after his Brazilian team mate Vinicius Jr had a strike ruled out for offside following a VAR review, while Nacho struck in added time for the hosts to set up a tense finish.
Sociedad defender Andoni Gorosabel was sent off in stoppage time but Madrid, who are top of La Liga, could not find an equaliser and suffered their first defeat in any competition since losing 1-0 at Real Mallorca on Oct. 19.
Madrid host Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie on February 26.
Also Record 30-times winners Barcelona were sent crashing out of the Copa del Rey in a 1-0 defeat at Athletic Bilbao after a stoppage-time header from Inaki Williams.
Spanish striker Williams glanced a cross into the bottom corner to spark jubilant scenes at a rocking San Mames stadium and recalled Aritz Aduriz’s added-time goal in Athletic’s 1-0 home win over Barca on the first day of the Liga season.
They join Real Sociedad, Granada and secondtier Mirandes in Friday’s semi-final draw, which will not include Real Madrid, Barca or Atletico Madrid for the first time in 17 years.
The defeat heaped more misery on Barca in a tough week for the Catalans in which captain Lionel Messi spoke out against sporting director Eric Abidal and forward Ousmane Dembele was ruled out for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury.
Barca defender Gerard Pique said the team needed to show unity and refrain from in-fighting, adding that the performance, if not the result, proved that they had moved on from the saga. Messi spurned a glorious late opportunity for the visitors when he could only shoot at the legs of Athletic keeper Unai Simon and his fellow striker Antoine Griezmann also went close in the second half.
The game looked to be heading into extra time when Williams missed a gilt-edged chance but he made amends by getting the slightest of touches on a cross from Ibai Gomez in the third minute of stoppage time.
The victory must have felt like redemption for Athletic, who were knocked out of the Cup by Barca in 2017 and 2016 and lost to them in the final in 2009, 2012 and 2015.
The Catalans have appeared in the last six finals but they joined Real Madrid in being knocked out after Zinedine Zidane’s side were beaten 4-3 at home by Real Sociedad earlier on Thursday. MA D RI D, F e b 7 (Agen cies ): Real Madrid were dumped out of the Copa del Rey at the quarter-final stage on Thursday after losing 4-3 at home to Real Sociedad in a hugely entertaining game which saw two goals ruled out by video technology and a late red card for the visitors.
Sociedad’s Sweden forward Alexander Isak inspired an incredible attacking display, scoring twice in the second period, setting up the fourth goal for Mikel Merino and also having a strike ruled out for offside.
Norwegian midfielder Martin Odegaard, who is on loan from Madrid, had given the visitors the lead midway through the first half, following up on the rebound after home keeper Alphonse Areola could only parry a long-range effort from Isak.
Defender Marcelo quickly pulled a goal back for the hosts after Isak’s quick-fire brace to make it 3-1, beating keeper Alex Remiro at the near post moments after receiving a volley of boos from the home fans for his haphazard display.
But rampant Sociedad soon restored a three-goal Mirabai Chanu

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner become embroiled in a public row with Barca sporting director Eric Abidal this week after he accused the players of not working hard enough under former manager Ernesto Valverde. Messi responded by telling Abidal to “take responsibility” for Valverde’s dismissal and urged him to name the players he was accusing of downing tools.
The 32-year-old’s disgruntlement, along with a clause in his contract that allows him to leave Barcelona for free at the end of the season, has led to reports he could be set to move to City. They already employ Guardiola as well as a number of former Barca staff in senior positions. But Guardiola says he is against any potential move, saying: “He’s a player from Barcelona. He will stay there. That is my wish: stay in Barcelona. I think he’s going to finish his career there.”
Guardiola also revealed Raheem Sterling faces weeks on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury in City’s 2-0 defeat at Tottenham last Sunday.
The issue makes the England international, who has 20 goals for City this season, a doubt for their Champions League last 16 first leg against Real Madrid Pep urges Messi to stay at Barca on February 26.
Guardiola said, “It’s a hamstring injury. We will see. Of course it takes weeks. We will see before Leicester, Madrid and the rest of the games. I don’t know right now.” “It’s a problem. We were without (Ilkay) Gundogan for six months in the first year and (Aymeric) Laporte this season for four months. It’s always a problem but it’s what it is. During the season it happens unfortunately.”

Lond on , Feb 7 (Agen cies ): Premier League clubs have voted to extend any bans imposed on supporters for abusive behaviour across the whole of the English top flight.
The season has been marred by incidents of racist abuse, with the Professional Footballers’ Association calling on the government to set up an inquiry into the matter and its chief executive Gordon Taylor seeking custodial sentences for those found guilty.
A statement following the Premier League shareholders’ meeting on Thursday said the clubs were “united against all forms of violent, threatening and abusive behaviour”.
“Following recent events, the 20 clubs committed to introducing a league-wide ban for anyone banned by their club for discriminatory, abusive or violent acts,” the statement added. EPL extend bans for racist chants

Dearest, it seemed just like yesterday that you left us heartbroken and in tears forever on this day ten years ago. Our lives became so dark and inconsolable in your absence and not even a single day passes by without your memories in our hearts. However as we realised that you went away to be in a better place with our Lord where there will be no more earthly cares, we were consoled with the belief that we will see you one day at other side of the horizon in our Lord’s presence.
