However, he said the present day government was against the wishes of the

emonious act of back tracking” by the state government from the “laudable agreement” between the state government and the JCC on January 31, 2017, which was initiated by NBCC. ENPO further informed that NTAC and JCC are represented by the president ENPUK and president ENPUD respectively on behalf of the people of Eastern Nagaland. AYO hits back at NPF Youth Wing NTAC slams CM’s statement DIMAPUR, FEB 4 (NPN): Drawing attention to the press statement of the NPF Youth Wing, which tried to justify the decision of the state government, Angami Youth Organisation (AYO) has termed the statement as “ridiculous, unfounded and baseless statement devoid of any substance and value”. AYO publicity Cell, reiterated it was morally bound to respond since NPF Youth Wing alleged that tribal bodies were “instigated by Rio or Imkong...” AYO said such “baseless allegation” was an insult to its integrity and also a direct affront to the selfless efforts it rendered in the interest of society. AYO further said it had nothing to do and no interest on this issue and advised NPF Youth Wing “not to act over smart and speak beyond their capacity.” Responding to NPF Youth Wing, AYO reiterated that it was the denial of the voice of the people which they

(Youth Wing) termed as “anarchy and mobocracy” as being a responsible factor “behind all the subversive terror that have unfolded in the recent times”. AYO also hit back saying that “butchering of human lives is chauvinistic” as suitably stated by NPF Youth Wing. AYO also said it found the NPF Youth Wing’s statement “uniquely preposterous” for claiming that NPF-led DAN government won’t enact laws or frame policies that are detrimental to Nagas. AYO said it was “unique because the laws and policies enacted and framed in this regard were detrimental to the Naga people for such realisation your government nullified the municipal elections.”AYO slammed NPF Youth Wing as being drunk and intoxicated with power. AYO also agreed with the Youth Wing’s claim, that ULB election had created chaos and division in society was “grandly true”. It was also “quite true because rights of

Leading the service, which started from 8am, JCC of Ao Senden convener, A. Bendang Jamir, who also chaired the service, in his introduction, said that Senden planned to conduct the tribute service simultaneously with Kohima, but the bodies were already buried on Friday in Kohima. As per the Ao traditions, he said no rituals were to be performed after sunset and therefore, the service had to be conducted Saturday morning. The programme began with observance of one minute silence

people. “Therefore on this count alone the chief minister is liable to step down from the chair as the action of the state government does not stand consonant with the meaning of Democracy”, he stated. JCC has also demanded that the state government issue an official notification nullifying the February 1 ULB polls. It also demanded suspension of former Dimapur Commissioner of Police, Longleng SP along with the all erring personnel. Further, JCC informed that NTAC would also be coordinating with the activities in Dimapur. JCC further warned

that if the state government failed to fulfil their demands, the committee would resort to strong action. ENPO: Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) has resolved to extend support and total solidarity to the resolutions adopted and demanded by NTAC and JCC to restrict opening of government offices and movement of government vehicles till the demands were fulfilled. This was resolved at ENPO emergency meeting held on February 4, 2017 in Dimapur. In a press release, media cell ENPO has informed six federating tribal units of the organisation for strict compliance and implementation of the resolutions with effect from February 6, 2017 in all districts and sub-divisional administrative Hqs. However, ENPO said all educational institutions both government and private, banks, medical, power, fire services, business and markets, army, central and paramilitary forces and private transportations have been exempted from the purview of the restrictions. Meanwhile, the ENPO has lamented the “uncer-

in honour of the departed souls. The invocation prayer was offered by MTBA associate pastor Toshi. He stated that a two-hour fasting was being observed in all the churches under ABAM. At the programme, short speeches were delivered by Ao Senden acting president, Landowners Board Mokokchung president, All Ward Union Mokokchung Town chairman and AKM.

Almost all the speakers echoed on the same lines slamming the government for its “adamant attitude” in trying to go ahead with the ULB polls, which led to the killing of two youths. They said the two youths have earned their martyrdom and made the highest sacrifice. They hoped that Naga people will unite through this supreme sacrifice, which they said should not go in vain. people were absolutely denied” and which were never heeded and democratic voices “suppressed with constitutional and legal justifications without acknowledging the social and political aspects. AYO said the blatant abrogation of agreement signed with church and home minister, were thrown to the dust bin and followed by “heinous violation of perpetration of terror by the government against its own people”. AYO said the present impasse was due to lack of sagacity and magnanimity on the part of the government and hoped sanity, sensibility and rationality would dawn upon the NPF-led DAN government. AYO advised the NPF Youth Wing not to shed farcical “crocodile tears” by conveying condolence messages to the bereaved families “with political gimmicks for mere publicity” as “no words can suffice the blood and tears of those young people whose lives were butchered by you”.

Limasunep takes over as CP Dimapur DIMAPUR, FEB 4 (NPN): Limasunep Jamir, IPS has taken over as the new Commissioner of Police (CP), Dimapur on February 3, while Vechipa Vise, IPS took over as the new Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone- I, Dimapur. In a brief press note, Limasunep stated that the Police exist for the people and the people for the Police. This symbiotic relation has always existed in one form or the other in every society, he said while appealing to the citizens not to take law into their own hands L i m a s u n e p Ja m i r sought co-operation and support of the people to maintain peace and restore normalcy in the District. He assured that Dimapur Police under his watch would tirelessly endeavor to provide a credible, transparent, accountable Police administration in the service of people.

KOHIMA, FEB 4 (NPN): Nagaland Tribes Action Committee (NTAC) has vehemently condemned the statement of the chief minister T.R Zeliang for blaming the democratic protest of the tribal bodies and JCC that led to the death of two youths and causing injury to several others during the police firing at Dimapur and Longleng. Instead of owning responsibility, Zeliang’s statement was “most irrational”, NTCA convenor K.T Vilie and secretary C.T Jamir stated in a press note. At the meeting of the NTAC held on Saturday, the house resolved to take the democratic struggle of the people of the state to its logical conclusion. “If chief minister T.R Zeliang has any sense of modesty and reason, must understand that his accusation was a mockery to democratic principles and commonsense and calls for befitting punish-

ment,” NTAC stated. Instead of listening to the people’s voice, NTAC said Zeliang’s rather chose to justify that he had the support of 42 MLAs, who were “forcefully confined within his bungalow”, in order not to step down. NTAC pointed out that the people of Nagaland ought to know that the fallout was purely due to the cabinet’s devious decision to sidetrack from the January 30th gentlemen’s agreement at Chumukedima witnessed by NBCC to postpone the ULB polls. The committee alleged that Zeliang, with blood on his hand, was dubiously trying to hide behind the Constitution, deliberately ignoring the turmoil and hardships faced by the people, to hold on to his post devoid of any moral right to continue. He has shied away from the truth like an Ostrich hiding its head in the sand with its body fully exposed, said NTAC.

3 ZPON refutes news item DIMAPUR: Zeliang Peoples’ Organization Nagaland (ZPON) has refuted the news item published on February 4 in local dailies under the title, “Zeliang elders demand immediate resignation of CM”. ZPON president, Kiezen Zeliang stated that the news was “politically motivated and an attempt to join the bandwagon of the group who are trying to dethrone T R Zeliang from his chair”. ZPON clarifies that there was no such organization as Zeliang Elders Forum and that Itingtiebe Siang who claimed to be the convener of the forum is known by all his community people as an illiterate and ignorant elder who do not possess any capacity of heading such kind of organization. ZPON stated that Itingtiebe Siang’s name had been used “by people who are using every means to dethrone the present CM from his chair”. Though every individual is entitled to his own opinion, ZPO (N) strongly warned that any individual taking the name of any such non-existent self styled Zeliang organization would be “responsible for his own action in case of any dire consequences”.

Union Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain said this while addressing mediapersons on Saturday and added the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is going to undertake three surveys for laying railway tracks connecting Bhalukpong to Tawang, Silapathar-North Lakhimpur-Bamey and between MurkongselekRupai-Pasighat. “While the sur vey for Murkongselek-RupaiPasighat line has already been started, the NFR is expecting to start the survey in the two other proposed lines,” Gohain said adding the three proposed railway lines are expected to cost

between Rs 50,000 crore to Rs 70,000 crore. “The proposed railway line between Bhalukpong to Tawang will also be one of the highest elevation in the country -- 9,000 feet,” he said adding the three proposed lines are going to be major challenges for the NF railway in the days to come. Gohain also said the allocation for projects in Assam and other northeastern states was increased to Rs 5,586 crore compared to Rs 5,340 crore allotted in 2016-17. The minister, however, expressed concern over the problem of insecurity in Manipur and said the security situation has affected the work of NFR in the state considerably. “The insecurity in Manipur is a major setback for the railways. The work between Jiribam to Imphal has been affected due to the blockade in the past. Blockade affects work as everything including construction material has to be carried from this side,” he said.

BJP seeks Meghalaya CM ouster S HI L L O N G, F e b 4 (Agencies): After the Supreme Court recently upheld the May 31, 2016 ruling by former governor V Shanmuganathan that the post of member of district council (MDC) is not an office of profit, the BJP state unit now wants chief minister Mukul Sangma to step down. BJP claims Mukul tried to do away with the district council by passing the anti-dual post act in the assembly. “We demand that the chief minister Mukul Sangma step down as he took the people of the state for a ride by passing such an Act,” state BJP president Shibun Lyngdoh said on Friday. The Prevention of Disqualification (Members of Legislative Assembly, Meghalaya) (Amendment) Act, 2015 was passed by the Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance government that subsequently led to the resignation of at least seven out of eight legislators who had been holding dual posts.

Next round of tripartite talks on February 7

Correspondent

IMPHAL, Feb 4: Representatives of Manipur government along with two UNC leaders in judicial custody are back to Imphal from New Delhi on Saturday as the tripartite talks had agreed to hold the next round of talks in the state. UNC president Gaidon Kamei and his publicity secretary Shankhel Stephen were taken to New Delhi by a team of state police accompanied by personnel of the state Central jail to take part in the tripartite talks on lifting the UNC sponsored three month old economic blockade on the national highways in Manipur. The UNC leaders were taken to Imphal Central jail where they have been shifted recently on security point of view, an official source said. The tripar tite talk between the Centre, State and agitating United Naga Council (UNC) held at New Delhi on Friday failed to reach to a conclusion on the ongoing economic blockade and the participants at

the meeting unanimously agreed to hold further consultation in the next round on February 7. However, the meeting did not decided the venue of the next round of talks even though UNC has been insisting to hold the talk in Senapati district headquarters or at the national capital. The talk at Delhi was dominated by differences of opinion on matter of whether the economic blockade will be lifted first or it should be preceded by the formal release of UNC president Gaidon Kamei and publicity secretary Shankhel Stephen. The UNC leaders tabled that the decision to lift the economic blockade can only be decided by ‘presidential council of the UNC and agreed that to inform after a meeting is convened on February 7 in Senapati. On the demand of the UNC leaders to release Gaidon and Stephen unconditionally, the state government representatives told the former that they will take up the demand with the ‘higher authority’ and study legal issues involved in the case.

Manipur Maoist alleges Cong of cheating people on immigrant issue

Correspondent

IMPHAL, Feb 4: Maoist Communist Party Manipur (MCPM) Saturday came out strongly against the Congress after the ruling party offered ticket to an “immigrant” while indigenous people are struggling for their protection. The MCPM is reacting to the inclusion of a Nepali community (Khadga Tamang) in the list of candidates who will be contesting the ensuing elections to the state Assembly. As per the list released on Friday, Khadga Tamang would be contesting the elections from Kangpokpi A/C of newly created Kangpokpi district. “The offering of Con-

gress ticket to an immigrant is a challenge to the peoples’ movement for protection of the indigenous people of the state,” MCPM alleged in a statement issued to the local media today. The armed group said that the very act of proving party ticket to a non-local showed that Congress party has no concern about the people voice and cheating the people of the state. The time has come for the people to stand together and fight against the Congress party to protect the indigenous people of the state, it added. The statement alleged the ruling Congress was using the non-locals as its vote bank as the party only

yarned for power. Such strategies of the Congress have been noticing in some Assembly segments like Thangmeiband, Sagolband, Sekmai (in Imphal West), Sugunu in Thoubal district, Jiribam and Kangpokpi, it alleged. Stating that the act of the Congress party was to eliminate the indigenous people of the state, the armed group urged all the communities of the state to come out against the Congress. It also appealed the people to stage a torch rally on the evening of February 11 and cease work on February 12 to stage a mass rally for protection of the indigenous people of the state.

Ering seeks better mobile coverage in NE G U WA H ATI , F e b 4 (Agencies): Arunachal Pradesh MP Ninong Ering has raised the pitch for expanding cellular connectivity in areas still outside telecom coverage in the northeast. Ering had recently written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that “vested interests are bent on denying mobile connectivity” to the people of the northeast and, in particular, to Arunachal Pradesh. “Following a delay of over 18 months in calling tenders (April 2016) after cabinet approval (September 2014), there has been a further delay of over five months even after tenders were evaluated,” Ering wrote to the PM. Ering added that the northeast is a sensitive region, sharing international borders, and yet the region is not completely exposed to cellular technology. Union home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi had in November last year pointed out that there

are communication voids in areas along the IndiaMyanmar international border, especially in southern Arunachal Pradesh, southeastern Nagaland, western and southern Manipur and southern Mizoram. According to statistics on the comprehensive telecom plan for the northeast, there are an estimated 8,621 villages in the region which do not have mobile coverage. Arunachal Pradesh alone has 2,805 villages, followed by Assam (2,503), Meghalaya (2,374), Manipur (528), Mizoram (252), Nagaland (134), Sikkim (23) and Tripura (2). The Centre has planned it will install 6,673 telecom towers in the northeast at an estimated cost of Rs 4, 770.08 crore to cater to the uncovered villages of the region. There is another plan to set up 321 telecom towers at an estimated cost of Rs 270.13 crore for mobile coverage along national highways in the northeast.

Assam MLA live-streams speech; sparks row GUWAHATI, Feb 4 (Agencies): AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam has come under fire for live-streaming his speech on the contentious illegal Bangladeshi migrant issue from his seat in the legislative assembly on Friday. The BJP-led government called the speech, which the legislator streamed on Facebook, “unethical” and “communally provocative”. Aminul Islam defended his move by saying he wanted more people to hear him speak in the assembly and create more awareness about the subject. “I am not aware if the code of conduct bans live-streaming on Facebook from inside the house, but this will help create awareness. If the speaker says this is wrong, I will not do it,” he said. The speaker, Hitendra Nath Goswami, said, “I can’t comment on the matter straight away. I have received verbal complaints from some MLAs and I have asked them to give the complaint in writing, after which I can take a call.” The state legislative assembly allows live telecast of the proceedings of the house only during question hour and not beyond. “Telecast of the proceedings can be done only after taking permission,” the speaker said. BJP’s parliamentary affairs minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said what Islam did was unethical.

BJP declares second list Big business taking interest in Assam: Sonowal of candidates in Manipur Correspondent

IMPHAL, Feb 4: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Central Election Committee on Saturday released a second list of 27 candidates for the March 4 and 8 elections to the 60-member Manipur assembly. The BJP had already announced the names of 31 candidates some days ago. However, the party didn’t declare the candidates to be fielded as party nominees from Bishnupur Assembly segment of Bishnupur district and Lamshang A/C of Imphal West district. If not the sitting Congress MLAs, the saffron party is hoping to offer party tickets to those who came out from Congress. Interestingly, state commerce and industries minister K Govindas and MLA L Brajabidhu Singh are representing Bishnupur A/C and Lamshang A/C respectively where the BJP is yet to decide its candidates. The two Congressmen were among a probable list of sitting MLAs leaving the party (Congress) to join BJP, reported local media. When inquired, BJP said that party “election strategy” was behind the non-declaration of candidates for the two seats while hinting that Congress

MLAs are likely to come to the party fold even though their names had already been included in the list of Congress candidatures. If their joining could not be confirmed within the next three days, BJP may consider fielding women candidates in the two seats, the party source added. The 60-seat Manipur Assembly will witness twophase elections on March 4 and 8. In the list released today, two Congress MLAs who had resigned from the party to the BJP, Nemcha Kipgen from Kangpokpi A/C and Vungzagin Valte were included. Interestingly, BJP left behind many party ticket aspirants who already started their elections campaigns under saffron banner. Former Manipur police DGP Y Joykumar, who joined the party after his retirement from active service, was denied party ticket. In Uripok A/C, where Joykumar was campaigning for contesting the elections, BJP is fielding Dr Dwijamani Singh. The party also denied ticket even to its incumbent youth (BJYM) wing president O Malesh. He had contested from the Naoriya Pakhanglakpa Assembly Constituency in Imphal West district in last general election on BJP ticket.

College officials and Defence Colleges of few other countries. The delegation is currently touring Assam to study the socio-economic condition of the state. The chief minister apprised the delegation that a lot of activities have been undertaken to put the state on a high growth trajectory and build infrastructure at a fast pace. Initiatives like ‘Ease of Doing Business’ are being implemented so that business houses can set up their base in the state, taking advantage of a single window facility for different

clearances. He also informed the delegates that Global Business Summit would be held in the state in November 2017 where the government hopes to gain big ticket investments. “Since Assam is primarily an agro-based economy, an increased thrust is being put on farmers who are opting for double cropping to boost output and influence youths to take up farming as a means for employment,” he said. Dissidents in TMC allegedly inching closer to BJP in Tripura A G A RT A L A , F e b 4 (Agencies): Dissident leaders in Trinamool Congress (TMC) seem to be inching closer to BJP in order to ensure a direct fight against the ruling Left Front in Tripura in the assembly election scheduled to be held early next year. Tripura TMC leader Sudip Roy Barman hinted at doing everything to prevent a division of the anti-Left vote and is ready to consider going with any party. He also made a significant indication of ignoring the TMC central leadership for the purpose. “We are

exploring all options; we are exploring pros and cons as to how we can give relief to the common people from the clutches of the bad elements of the Communist Part of India-Marxist. In our state of Tripura we are exploring how to bring change in the government and ensuring it in the next assembly election,” said TMC MLA and former Opposition Leader Sudip Roy Barman. “This party which has badly failed to live up to the expectation of the common people and want to get rid of them and we want to ensure that.” He was speaking to

reporters in the TMC headquarters here in presence of two more MLA Asish Saha and Biswa Bandhu Sen who was recently seen in dialogue with the state BJP president Biplab Deb. When Barman was asked that considering the ongoing bitter tussle between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the West Bengal Chief Minster Mamata Banerjee and who was recently seen close with the CPIM central leadership on the demonetization issue and hence it is most unlikely that the TMC will approve any alliance with the BJP

in Tripura, the former Congress leader Roy Barman said that he along with five other MLAs had left the Congress and joined TMC on the issue of CongressLeft Front alliance in West Bengal and to ensure the Left Front is ousted from power in Tripura. He added, “We have learned a lesson from our erstwhile party, this is not going to happen this time….. We will be overcoming all obstacles laid in the hurdle race and which have been placed to cross the barrier. We will cross all hurdle to reach that point. All these obstacles

shall not be a problem for us and we are confident enough that we shall be overcoming all these obstacles to ensure the defeat of this anti-people government in Tripura.” Under this circumstance, it seems that another split in the Trinamool Congress in Tripura is imminent. However, it is not yet clear if the dissident leaders will join BJP or they will float another front to go in a larger alliance. It is also not clear how many of the six MLA’s who left Congress and joined TMC last year are in unison to defy Mamata Banerjee’s dictate.

Supreme Court of India.

NEW DELHI, FEB 4 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Centre to prepare a comprehensive policy for implementation of a plan within four weeks for eradication of leprosy. A bench of Chief Justice J S Khehar and justices N V Ramana and D Y Chandrachud said the Centre should also submit in the plan as how it intends to fill the large scale vacancy at the ground level. “You need people to successfully implement your policies at the ground level,” the bench told the Centre. Standing counsel Bala Subramanium appearing for the Centre said Delhi,

Andhra Pradesh and Chhattishgarh are leprosy endemic states and efforts are being made to eradicate the leprosy. He said an online programme is being launched to detect the patients and their treatment. Earlier, the apex court had asked the Centre and state governments to apprise it of steps taken to eradicate and curb leprosy, saying it was their responsibility to stop the spread of the disease which is curable. The bench which was hearing a PIL filed by advocate Pankaj Sinha had earlier rapped the authorities for their “apathy” in eradicating leprosy from

the country, saying despite it being “curable”, the disease still remains a stigma. Earlier too, the apex court had granted time for filing of replies by the Centre and others and had said, “This is a case which should have been taken on priority basis. Leprosy, as on today, is curable and yet because of apathy shown by the authorities concerned, it still remains a stigma.” Sinha, in his plea, has alleged that leprosy affects over 1.25 lakh people annually in the country. He had also alleged that governments have failed to eliminate the disease despite medical treatment available since 1981.

ArrayChennai/New Delhi, Feb 4 (IANS/ Agencies): Thousands of people scooped out buckets of thick oil sludge along the Chennai coastline on Saturday that had spilled into the sea after the collision of two tankers last week. Two petroleum product carrying ships -- M.T. BW Maple carrying liquefied Petroleum Gas(LPG) and M.T. Dawn Kanchipuram which had petroleum oil lubricants (POL)-- collided off the Kamarajar Port on January 28 night. More than 1,000 people were deployed here with portable pollution cleaning equipment for shore line cleaning, Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping, Pon. Radhakrishnan told reporters. Three super sucker and submersible pumps have also been deployed to remove the oil spill. The accident, which was earlier termed as a minor one, has turned into a major one, threatening the marine ecology along the Tamil Nadu coast. Several dead turtles, crabs and other sea creatures have been washed ashore. According to the central government more than 90 per cent of the cleaning work has been completed and most of the residual work is expected to be completed in a couple of days. Radhakrishnan said the agencies were deployed and various methods for cleaning up the oil were being used in the opera-

Turned to ashes

W

hen Kohima erupted in flames on the night of February 2, it was a painful sight- to see a part of history slowly crumbling to ashes and to nothingness. It was not to be and should never have been; a heritage nestled atop a battle scarred hill during World War II, was wiped out from the face of Kohima and taking with it, images of buildings that housed the offices of the then Naga Hills and later the newly created state of Nagaland. The flames lit up the night sky like a funeral pyre that signalled the end. The seat of power in Nagaland such as- the state assembly and hostel, the Old Secretariat, offices of all ministers, top bureaucrats and important directorates while the renowned Zonal Council Hall was the one and only important venue for all government programmes, were all gone. All that will remain are memories etched in the minds of thousands of people and employees who once used to walk the corridors. When all the buildings in the twin hillocks were razed to the ground, they not only erased the link with the history of Nagaland, but also took away important documents that cannot be retrieved. Some may have been financial statements while others could have been records and confidential information. One may be tempted to ask( without fear or prejudice)- why were the buildings targeted to be burned down, since they have not caused any problem to the people?. Instead, they were facilities that brought much benefit and met the needs of the state. By burning buildings, do such actions help achieve whatever objective? This trend of burning houses cannot be deemed to be a democratic form of protest nor in any way, an acceptable method. By tradition, Nagas do not indulge in such horrendous acts ; perhaps except in times of war against the enemy in the olden days. There is need for those who love Nagaland to come up with plans to identify over 50 year-old structures to protect and preserve them as heritage. There are some such interesting places of historical value which would be good for posterity. One unfortunate aspect of the disinclination of the government, has also been to ignore the need to protect buildings that are the heritage of the state. The hillock and nearby present DC’s office, were the symbols of the government –both during the colonial and post-independence period. When so much positive achievements have been claimed by all and sundry, it is quite surprising that there has been very little done to teach people to value properties of the government. This is one aspect that people in Nagaland including the leaders will have to ponder over. When one looks at government structures, it reveals the mentality of those who don’t seem to understand their value. Employees also seem to think that they are doing a service by abusing the facilities. It is hoped that the tragedies that unfolded with the deaths of two precious lives on January 31 and the February 2 arson and vandalism will not be repeated in future. Even with a heavy heart, it is also hoped that these tragedies will also serve as a lesson to all.

DailyDevotion The Compelling Majesty of His Power The love of Christ compels us… —2 Corinthians 5:14 Paul said that he was overpowered, subdued, and held as in a vise by “the love of Christ.” Very few of us really know what it means to be held in the grip of the love of God. We tend so often to be controlled simply by our own experience. The one thing that gripped and held Paul, to the exclusion of everything else, was the love of God. “The love of Christ compels us….” When you hear that coming from the life of a man or woman it is unmistakable. You will know that the Spirit of God is completely unhindered in that person’s life. When we are born again by the Spirit of God, our testimony is based solely on what God has done for us, and rightly so. But that will change and be removed forever once you “receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…” (Acts 1:8). Only then will you begin to realize what Jesus meant when He went on to say, “…you shall be witnesses to Me….” Not witnesses to what Jesus can do— that is basic and understood— but “witnesses to Me….” We will accept everything that happens as if it were happening to Him, whether we receive praise or blame, persecution or reward. No one is able to take this stand for Jesus Christ who is not totally compelled by the majesty of His power. It is the only thing that matters, and yet it is strange that it’s the last thing we as Christian workers realize. Paul said that he was gripped by the love of God and that is why he acted as he did. People could perceive him as mad or sane— he did not care. There was only one thing he lived for— to persuade people of the coming judgment of God and to tell them of “the love of Christ.” This total surrender to “the love of Christ” is the only thing that will bear fruit in your life. And it will always leave the mark of God’s holiness and His power, never drawing attention to your personal holiness.

Post-mortem Learning lessons from our circumstance

3

1st January 2017 will go down as the darkest day of infamy in the annals of democracy in Nagaland where a reckless State Government shamelessly opted for money at the cost of taking the lives of two promising sons of Nagaland. Over the years the Nagas have shown chronic tendencies of wanting freedom without responsibility and authority without accountability. Freedom and authority is not for free. The exercise of our franchise in a democracy is a fundamental duty expected to be carried out by every franchised individual with utmost sense of propriety. This necessarily calls for a base level literacy and awareness to understand the basic consequences that would result from the corrupt choices that we make. That the majority failed to exercise this freedom of choice sensibly in the past is quite apparent. Nagas have been opting for an adulterated choice of leaders dictated by ‘money’ which has resulted in the election of questionable representatives who won their seat in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly for their ability to commandeer money power to influence our votes but not necessarily for their upright characters. In the earlier article titled “An Acrimonious Concept” carried by all the local print media on the 18th January 2017, this author had tried to forewarn the Government that “this issue touches the core sentiment of traditional mindset of the male population” which ought to have tempered the Government to tread carefully. A foreboding thought was also shared that: “In the absence of matured reasoning we are probably starring at a potentiality chaotic social tsunami sweeping across the State if Mr. T.R. Zaliang shuts down his thinking faculties and adamantly puts into motion the final ULB election process knowing well that this will be an outright challenge to the civil society”. Our thick-skinned leaders who we voted to power for money had shown neither the intelligence to recognise the threatening tide of conflict looming in the horizon nor the acumen to learn by listening to the voice of the people. Their inept failure to read the situation has culminated in today’s very avoidable tragedy of losing the lives of our two innocent sons Khriesavizo and Bendangnungsang over an inconsequential ULB election with 33% WR where the real focus was on capitalising Central Funding for Urban Development that many of them could personally cannibalise. Instead of confusing ourselves with all the complex legal jargons in terms of piecemeal Articles/Clauses being thrown around all we needed to

hat is supposed to be a people’s movement has turned out to be a display of Nagas savagery in full view of the world. It will take years to erase that image from us. What did we get from this protest? We lost on every count. Two precious lives lost, properties damaged, women participation in civic bodies which is much needed, will now be pushed to the back burner, the misogynistic outdated attitudes of our tribal hohos will take a deeper root, and the tag of being a Christian state is blown away in the air. This issue could have been solved amicably much earlier but it was kept alive due to adamant attitude of NMA which appeared to be pushing for the cause of feminism rather than for upliftment of women, over reaction of the insecure only male dominated hohos who still live in the past and believe that women should shun all

do was to focus on the overall bigger picture that Article 371 A of the Indian Constitution empowers the Naga Customary Laws and Practices. It was necessary that we patiently analyse and understand our customary laws and practices concerning ‘women’ that have gone ‘out of tune’ with the present. It is a common knowledge that at the time of our headhunting ancestry, women were not part of the decision making body of male elders who mostly dwelt on headhunting strategies of offensive or defensive warfare. Women were ‘physical misfits’ in a headhunting era, disqualified by circumstance as the weaker sex and not because of a deliberate male chauvinistic inclination. It rather portrayed a picture of the high protective esteem women commanded in not being compelled to join the dangerous headhunting pastime. Rightly or wrongly this is the reality of our customary practices brought forth from our ancestors centuries ago to the present times. What we needed to fundamentally understand is the fact that the “times have changed”. Unlike the headhunting issues of the past, today we are dealing with subjects of development and progress that require brainwork...not physical prowess... where women too have a relevant contributory role to play and therefore deserve to be allowed their rightful place in every decision making platform...even at the cost of the controversial issue of reservation. This necessarily dictates that the obsolete customary law must now be amendment through a statutory “Apex Customar y Court” (which we at present do not have). The bottom-line is: Once we amend our outdated customary law by ourselves, Article 371 A of the Indian Constitution will remain sacrosanct in its protection of Naga identity in consonance with our own inter pretation of our own customary law. The sanctity of our customary law and practices will forever get diluted beyond recognition if we open our doors and give legitimacy to other entities including the Supreme Court of India, to legally interpret our customary law from their perspectives... not ours. It would sound the death knell of the beginning of our doom. It is as simple as that. Withdrawing their SLP from the Supreme Court in this regard is therefore a wise step taken by our women folks. This is an issue that needs to be sorted out from within our own kitchen. We have unnecessarily run into a traditional tsunami as predicted for not wanting to take a patient step at a time by first correcting our base instead of taking a short cut approach with ‘money’ as the

driving force for all the reckless decisions that the NPF/DAN Government has taken at the cost of losing the precious lives of our children and bitterly dividing our Naga community. Think dispassionately and see which side of the fence you find yourself. From the general views expressed in the print media the perception seem to indicate that the core issue is not very much to do with whether women are equal to men. As an overall assessment, the males do not seem to be averse to giving women their rightful space in the matter of governance be it in the Village Council, ULB or the Legislative Assembly but sorting out the approach to effect the change in an acceptable customary fashion seems more the issue. It was incumbent upon a responsible Government to understand, facilitate and patiently nurse this hypersensitive process forward to its logical conclusion through educated interaction with the traditional establishments rather than insult the masses with their dictatorial verdict by forcefully and hurriedly attempting to conduct the ULB election based on their irrational priorities clouded by M-O-N-E-Y consideration. We have uncomfortably reached a very unpleasant crossroad where the people are now demanding for the resignation of the Chief Minister which necessarily implies that the Cabinet Ministers will also have to follow suit by rule and by convention. When Chief Minister along with his Home Minister entered into a formal agreement with JCC in the presence of NBCC as a responsible third party witness, it was incumbent upon his Cabinet to comply and fall in line behind their CM in acknowledgement of their “collective responsibility”. That the “DAN Legislature Party backs TR as CM” (Morung Express February 04.2017) is a farce being played out yet again. All they want is a “toothless stooge” to keep the Government running in order to exploit whatever rupee that is left in the public exchequer before the next election. The fact that the Chief Minister was unable to sway the decision of his Cabinet significantly registers the ground reality that he does not enjoy the confidence of his own Cabinet. It technically renders TR impotent as a leader. Now if Mr. T.R. Zaliang had a modicum of gray matter or honour in him, he ought to have gracefully resigned the very instant his Cabinet voted against his “Official agreement” to postpone the ULB election for two months. Why should it even require the people to demand it? But this is Nagaland where honour = bullshit. A thing called “moral responsibility” does not exist in

the Naga lexicon and therefore Chief Minister dares to make a ‘faceless’ appeal to the people instead to let “sanity and reason prevail” after his act of insanity and irrationality. Not the question of listening to the people... Mr. T. R. Zaliang seems to have stopped listening to himself as well. It would be pertinent to remind Mr. T.R. Zaliang that the President of South Korea was impeached on the issue of indirect corruption through a relentless mass movement. On a tradition bound subject such as our customary laws and practices being mishandled...the same can happen even in Nagaland if push comes to shove. In a reverse order therefore perhaps Mr. TR should allow “sanity and reason” to prevail and do the honourable thing before additional lives are lost over this issue of his resignation. Meanwhile it was also extremely refreshing to read the press statement of NSCN (IM) condemning this ongoing incident. Let me relay the content of their statement as carried by the Nagaland Post on 3rd February 2017 verbatim: (Quote): “NSCN (IM) maintained that it believed in resolving any differences of opinion “through dealing space and time for a negotiated settlement” between the State Government and all stake-holders. MIP said that imposition of unilateral will on the others without seriously respecting the views and opinions of others was “undemocratic”, which it said would end up in a state of Chaos”. (Unquote). What a profoundly prophetic statement that holds true even for NSCN (IM) conducting an opaque negotiated settlement with the GoI and imposing their “unilateral will on others without seriously respecting the views and opinions of others”! It appears that the disease of not listening to oneself has spread to an epidemic proportion afflicting not only Mr. T.R. Zaliang but NSCN (IM) leadership as well. It is in the hypocritical times like this that one gets prompted to spontaneously cry out in absolute anguish:”God help us all!” This is perhaps a way of The Almighty wanting Nagas to learn lessons from our circumstance and give a better account of our lives. In conclusion I would like to sincerely convey my heartfelt condolences to the immediate bereaved family of “Our Sons” Khriesavizo Metha and Bendangnungsang. It is our hope and prayer that their passing will not be in vein...that their sacrifice will spark the change for a caring Government that the people so desperately are looking forward to. Khekiye K. The way forward is dialogue

politics and finally the inefficient and visionless state government which seems to be in power by default. The decision of the cabinet to withdraw from tripartite agreement with JCC and NBCC reflects a very poor judgement and now their collective wisdom and the decision-making capacity is in serious doubt. The disgruntled politicians got a chance to play their cards and tried to tilt the tide to their favour. Liquor and cash flowed freely in some places even at this time of demonetisation. Within days the protest turned uglier including the midnight mob frenzy which is never seen in our land. Sadly, the inevitable happened. It is shocking to learn that even the iconic structure of civil secretariat which we all are proud of, would have gone without timely intervention by Kohima village youth What I am trying to emphasise here is that the subsequent events which happened relating to

women reservation in ULB reflects a sick society. This is not an issue to be fought in the street and nobody is the winner here. There are many women who are against women reservation and at the same time there are also many men who are for it. The larger point here is that we cannot just wish away the participation of women in ULBs by protest and reservation is forms is needed as there is no level playing field for them to fight with men in the present situation. Everybody is trying to interpret whether election on ULBs infringes of Article 371 (a) or not but with due apology to the learned writers, the interpretation of law is limitless and only the supreme court will give the final say. So we should not harp on the illusion that the provisions of Article 371 (a) which was inserted in the constitution when Nagas were backward and in turmoil is insulated from judicial review. For that matter our

customary practices are not infallible and if some of these are not consistent with the modern norms then judiciary or parliament will amend it. They may be in practice just because they were not subjected to judicial scrutiny. The best way to protect our identity and right is to adept them to the need of the modern time so that it will not invite interference from any quarter. Let us be honest, our customary laws put women at disadvantage as they were in practice when men were protectors and providers. But today the situation is opposite. In most household women are providers and men are housekeepers. While not encouraging feminism and also not forgetting the larger role that women play in building homes and society, we should appreciate if some of them want to participate in the ULBs and contribute to it. I believe that the state government had good intention to con-

‘Thoughts to Ponder’

A

s me and my friend were listening to the voices of our leaders paying solidarity and homage to the departed souls at the funeral service of our two beloved young brothers, the following thoughts crossed my mind. 1. Diphupar Village is a mini Nagaland where the whole Naga tribes reside without any divisions among the various tribes. We live together as Nagas where we value and respect each other as one. Together we always stand for our rights and for each other until our goals are achieved. One such instance is the sacrifice made by our two young brothers on 31st January 2017 who were brutally killed by the indiscriminate firing by the IRB under the Government of Mr. T.R. Zeliang. Thousands of people from all walks of lives gathered to stand together at these challenging hours. 2. The youths had no intention to steal or vandalize as assumed by those ‘High-handed people’ but to peacefully protest against the decision of the Government to go ahead with the elections in few places, making mockery of an agreement under the NBCC just a day before. They were there protesting against an act that infringe the rights of the Nagas and our leaders decision to sell that out for a few crores of cash. 3. Naga society from time immemorial is a ‘Patriarchal society’ where women are never discriminated but treated with respect and equality. It does not need the 33% reservation for women to be elected. I am sure our men will vote for and elect a woman if contested. The core of the matter is that we should learn to protect our constitutional privileges and to enjoy these rights. 4. Our elected representatives should be time and again reminded that it is us ‘of the people, by the people and for the people’- that they were elected and to also serve us- the public and for the good of all and not just a few. They should be for us, be our voice, and protect our rights and not power or money mongers. It’s time we ‘Nagas’ reason, unite and continue to stand together for our rights. Let us not compromise anymore. Stop selling our birthright for money. Enough is enough, and for what we are standing today is right, why sacrificing our lives today is right, why calling bandh is right, then let us together stand up not only for now but for always. Let not the sacrifice made by our two brothers lives’ be in vain. Let this be an eye opener for all the Nagas that ‘These people today against whom we are raising our voices are the ones we have elected yesterday’- let us retrospect ourselves and let us learn the value of exercising our valuable votes tomorrow without selling our voices, our rights and carefully with discerning hearts, let us choose our leaders for our better tomorrow. Atula Sanglir

duct ULB election and the Hoho too had good reasons to oppose it. In spite of the bitterness which happened during the past few days I am convinced that there is still a meeting point. The only way forward is dia-

logue, understanding and let’s have women reservation in an amicable form. May God heal the Naga society. Bendangchuba, K Khel Diphupar, (bendangchuba94@gmail.com)

When there is no fear of God

Sir,

The aftermath of the chaos and carnage that took place in Nagaland with the resulting death of two young people has not brought about the required solution as demanded by the people. The present government continues to sit in power despite the demands from civil bodies to resign en-masse. Holding on to the excuse that it would be unconstitutional for the CM to resign when 45 MLAs have asked him to continue has become the ace card for the CM. Never in the history of Nagaland has such a deadlock occurred where the stubborn power continues to cling on despite such opposition against its authority. Nagaland need prayers and for the people to turn back to the Lord else we are a completely doomed people. We need leaders who have the foremost fear of God without pride and arrogance. Religious leaders play major role in promoting harmony: Dalai Lama

Vidyaloke is an initiative focused on revitalising ancient Indian traditions. He said in India, concepts such as ‘ahimsa’ have existed for more than 3,000 years. “It’s time for Indians to activate these principles for the benefit of the entire human family.” “Indians should take more active role in promotion of inner values, as it is a part of the ancient Indian tradition,” he said. Concluding his discourse on Buddhist philosopher Nagarjuna’s ‘Letter to a Friend’, the spiritual

leader advocated the revival of ancient Indian knowledge through scholarships on the Nalanda tradition and the teachings of the 17 Nalanda masters. “You are the master of the ancient Indian knowledge, particularly the Nalanda tradition. As Tibetan Buddhists, we are the messenger. On the level of messenger, we are making every effort. Now the Indians as masters should take active role in promoting these human values; not through prayers but rigorous study,” he said. Identifying himself as a messenger of the ancient Indian thought and as a son of India, the Dalai Lama, who is revered by the Tibetans as a living god, said: “Each cell of my brain is filled with Nalanda thought and physically I am survived by Indian food. Therefore, in all sense, I describe myself as son of India.” “If I boast a little bit, since I follow these great

Naqvi says budget will help minorities

Abbas Naqvi

New Delhi, Feb 4 (IANS): Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Saturday said the increased allocation in the 2017-18 Budget for his ministry will help in the socio-economic and educational uplift of the minorities. The Ministry of Minority Affairs has been al-

located Rs 4,195.48 crore, around 10 per cent more, in the 2017-18 Budget announced by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday. Last year, the allocation was Rs 3,827.25 crore. Naqvi said a major part of this amount will go towards educational empowerment and skill development of the minorities. “The Modi government believes that commitment to development of the poor, weaker sections and minorities is not only its ‘raj dharma’ but also its ‘kartavya’ (duty),” he said. The Minister said more than Rs 2,600 crore has been provided for various scholarships and skill development schemes such as ‘Seekho aur Kamao’,

‘Nai Manzil’, ‘Nai Roushni’, ‘Usttad’, ‘Garib Nawaz Skill Development Centre’ and ‘Begum Hazrat Mahal Scholarship for Girls’. He said Rs 393.54 crore has been earmarked for merit-cum-means scholarship; Rs 950 crore for prematric scholarship; Rs 550 crore for post-matric scholarship; Rs 250 crore for ‘Seekho aur Kamao’; Rs 176 crore for ‘Nai Manzil’; Rs 113 crore for Maulana Azad Education Foundation; and Rs 170 crore as equity for National Minorities Development Financial Corporation. Besides, Rs 1,200 crore under the Multi-sectoral Development Programme will also be utilised for various education development activities.

masters of Nalanda, I have also become a tiny master myself,” he said with a hearty laugh. In an emotional recollection of his experience as a leader of the Tibetan people and as a Buddhist scholar, he said, “At the beginning, the concern was of my own survival. On 17 March, 1959 when I escaped from Norbulingka in Lhasa, I was doubtful if I will be alive to see the next day.” “Then the second phase was how to preserve the ancient knowledge, including our script and language. The present concern is how much we can serve and contribute to the well being of humanity with this knowledge,” he added. The 81-year-old spiritual leader, the global face of the Tibetan exile movement, lives in exile in the northern Indian hill town of Dharamsala along with some 140,000 Tibetans, over 100,000 of them in different parts of India.

AAP’s donation records incorrect: I-T dept to EC New Delhi: The Income Tax department has claimed to have found that the audit reports prepared by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for donations amounting to about Rs 27 crore have discrepancies and are incorrect. In a report submitted to the Election Commission, the department, which has been investigating the donations list of the party for the past over a year, said that the records of donations made to the AAP during 2013-14 and 2014-15 had “factual discrepancies” and did not match with the actual funds received by it from various donors. Officials said the alleged discrepancies in the donation records are of about R27 crore and have added that the Treasurer of the party has acknowledged “certain errors” in these records in their communication with the taxman. AAP’s national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted in response, “Modiji’s dirty tricks.

Arun Jaitley releases BJP’s poll manifesto for Uttarakhand

Dehradun, Feb 4 (IANS): Union Finance Minister and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley on Saturday released the party’s manifesto -- ‘Vision Document’ -- for the Uttarakhand Assembly polls. Pointing out that the BJP had a special connect with the hill state as it was formed when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister, the Minister rued how the Congress rule had slowed the development of the state. “We as a party are committed to the all-round development of the state and are hopeful that the people of the state will give the BJP a chance to form the government again and take the state to the posi-

tion it deserves,” the Union Minister stated. Pointing out that the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was of fast development, the Finance Minister said development in the hill state had suffered due to political instability. Giving details about the ‘Vision Document’ which is the party’s manifesto for the state assembly polls, Jaitley said it was made after much deliberation and keeping in mind clean and progressive governance. “We aim to bring governance to the last man,” he said, adding that since the state was bestowed with best natural resources, good governance can spur development.

rate income tax rate is not globally competitive. Particularly, we are comparing ourselves with China, not with the US. The US is 40 per cent, but we don’t do that. In comparison to China, it is said we should reduce it to 25 per cent,” Adhia said at a Ficci event here. “We said we would love to do it for everyone. But we have the constraint of budget.” The challenge, he said, is getting the resources. “Unless we increase our spread of personal income tax, unless we have more people coming forward and filing the exact detail of income, it’s a challenge for us. That’s what we are trying to do,” Adhia said. The “most challenging” is to increase the share of the personal income tax (PIT) in the total kitty.

New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI): Two years after it announced plans to reduce corporate tax rate to 25 per cent, the government on Saturday said any such reduction can come after the spread of personal income tax is increased and more people pay taxes. A cut of 1 per cent in corporate income tax rate from the current 30 per cent will cost Rs. 18,00019,000 crore in revenues, Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia said. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, in his second Budget in February 2015, had announced reduction of the corporate tax rate to 25 per cent from 30 per cent in a phased manner over the next four years starting 2015-16, accompanied by fewer exemptions. “A lot of issues have been raised that our corpo-

Mumbai, Feb 4 (Agencies): Tata Group moved down to 103rd position from 82nd last year in the Brand Finance Global 500 2017 report. The $100 billion conglomerate has been badly shaken by a bruising months-long fight between former Chairman Cyrus Mistry, ousted in October last year, and patriarch Ratan Tata. Among other Indian brands, Airtel has improved its ranking to 190 from 242 last year, Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) stood at 222 from 283, and IT major Infosys ranked at 251 from 301 in 2016, the report said. The list was topped by the tech giant Google followed by Apple. Google is now the world’s most valuable brand with a value of $109 billion from $88 billion last year. Apple’s loss has been Google’s gain. Apple has for the last five years held sway as the world’s most valuable brand. Its brand value fell to $107 billion this year from $145.9 billion in 2016.

ment Commission. “There are many more which are in the process of being addressed,” he said. “We are in the process of revising our General Financial Rules (GFR). These are the rules by which all government expenditure is controlled and regulated.” GFR is a compendium of general provisions to be followed by all offices of the central government while dealing with matters of financial nature. These were first issued in 1947 and last amended in 2010. However, it is felt that many of the rules have become redundant in view of rapid growth of alternative service delivery systems, developments in information technology, outsourcing of services and liberalisation of the system of procurement. He said it was sometimes felt by the private sector that these rules have been constraining the freedom of decision making.

New Delhi, Feb 4 (IANS): Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Friday said setting up a “bad bank”, which is a kind of asset reconstruction company to buy non-performing assets of banks at market price, could be a possible solution to deal with the festering problem of NPAs. “It (bad bank) is also a possible solution. We will take it on board for discussion,” Jaitley said here at the post-Budget interaction with India Inc. The Economic Survey 2016-17 has suggested establishment of a “bad bank” to deal with the NPA issue. “The problem has consequently continued to fester: NPAs keep growing, while credit and investment keep falling. Perhaps it is time to consider a different approach -- a centralised Public Sector Asset Rehabilitation Agency that could take charge of the largest, most difficult cases, and make politically tough decisions to reduce debt,” the survey noted. However, Jaitley added he did not want to comment in detail on the subject as he did not want the honest taxpayer’s money to be used for such

New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI): Stepping up the growth pitch, Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das today expressed confidence that the economy will grow upwards of 7 per cent next fiscal. “For this year’s GDP growth, we have to wait till March-end. But next year, it will be upwards of 7 per cent,” he said. Drawing on Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s statements, the secretary said there will be transient impact of demonetisation on the economy, but it will not spill over to the next fiscal. A large part of economy is moving towards digital transactions, he noted. Despite the global headwinds, Das said India’s growth remains much stronger. “It has stayed afloat. Not only stayed afloat, but also doing well. Our commitment is to push growth momentum,” he

US judge blocks Trump’s travel ban; White House hits back WASHINGTON, FEB 4 (IANS): A federal judge in Washington state temporarily blocked President Trump’s week-old immigration order from being enforced nationwide, reopening America’s door to visa holders from seven predominantly Muslim countries. Following the ruling on Friday, government authorities immediately began communicating with airlines and taking steps that would allow travel by those previously barred from doing so, the Washington Post quoted a US official as saying. At the same time, though, the White House said in a statement that the Justice Department would “at the earliest possible time” file for an emergency stay of the “outrageous” ruling from the judge. Minutes later, it issued a similar statement omitting the

word “outrageous”. “The President’s order is intended to protect the homeland and he has the constitutional authority and responsibility to protect the American people,” the White House said. In his opinion, US District Judge James L. Robart in Seattle, wrote that “fundamental” to the court’s work was “a vigilant recognition that it is but one of three equal branches of our federal government”. “The court concludes that the circumstances brought before it today are such that it must intervene to fulfil its constitutional role in our tripart government,” he wrote. Robart, a judge appointed by George W. Bush, granted a request from lawyers for the state of Washington who had asked him to stop the government from acting on critical sections of Trump’s order.

PARIS, FEB 4 (IANS): A machete-wielding man who on Friday attacked soldiers near Louvre Museum here and was shot, was an Egyptian national, a Paris prosecutor has said at a presser. Francois Molins told reporters on Friday evening that the attacker arrived in France from Dubai at the end of January, Xinhua news agency reported. “The identity of the perpetrator is not formally established, but the searches allow to identify a 29year-old Egyptian citizen,” Molins said. Molins said the attacker was not carrying an ID but a photo registered in Visabio (a European biometric database including digital photography and fingerprints of visa applicants) was the same of the machete-wielding man. Investigation is underway to determine the motive and to establish whether the attacker acted alone or have been guided, he added. According to initial indications, the attacker arrived on January 26 after acquiring a one-month tourist visa. Two days later, he bought two machetes at a store in French capital.

LYON (France) FEB 4 (Agencies): France’s far-right party leader Marine Le Pen kicked off her presidential campaign on Saturday, hoping promises to shield voters from globalization boost her chances at a time of French political turmoil. Opinion polls see the 48-year old daughter of National Front (FN) founder Jean-Marie Le Pen topping the first round on April 23 but then losing the May 7 run-off to a mainstream candidate. But in the most unpredictable election race France has known in decades, the FN hopes a twoday rally in Lyon, where Le Pen is spelling out her electoral platform, will help convince voters to back her. In 144 “commitments”, Le Pen proposes leaving the euro zone, taxes on the job contracts of foreigners, lowering the retirement age and increasing several welfare benefits while lowering payroll tax for small firms and income tax. The manifesto also foresees reserving certain rights now available to all residents, including free education, to French citizens only, hiring 15,000

Marine Le Pen

police, building more prisons, curbing migration and leaving NATO’s integrated command. “The aim of this programme is first of all to give France its freedom back and give the people a voice,” Le Pen said in the introduction to the manifesto. Emmanuel Macron, a pro-European centrist candidate whom polls say might be Le Pen’s opponent in the run-off, will also hold a rally in Lyon on Saturday to propose a radically different platform. “This presidential election puts two opposite proposals,” Le Pen said. “The ‘globalist’ choice backed by all my opponents ... that wants to abolish all borders...and the ‘patriotic’ choice which I personify.” Buoyed by last year’s unexpected vote to take

Britain out of the EU and Donald Trump’s election in the United States, the FN hopes to ride the same populist wave to victory. If elected, Le Pen says she would immediately seek an overhaul of the European Union that would reduce it to a very loose cooperative of nations with no single currency and no border-free area. If, as is likely, France’s EU partners refuse to agree to this, she will call a referendum to leave the EU. The electoral manifesto is short on macroeconomic details and does not give any public deficit or debt targets and does not explain how a Le Pen government would balance raising welfare benefits while cutting taxes. The FN would combine leaving the euro with unorthodox policies including money printing, currency intervention and import taxes, Jean Messiha, who has overseen the drafting of Le Pen’s manifesto, told Reuters ahead of the rally. The Lyon rally is also bound to focus on militant threats facing France, with the FN quick to react on Friday to an attempt by a machete-wielding man to enter the Paris Louvre museum.

Bloodied Ukrainian town waits for guns to fall silent KIEV, FEB 4 (AGENCIES): Workers on Saturday struggled to restore power to a f lashpoint Ukrainian town as a deadline loomed for government forces and rebels to pull back their weapons after surging violence killed dozens. Ukrainian officials and Russian-backed insurgents say the fighting that began on Sunday has killed 35 people in the eastern war zone -- a level of bloodshed not seen since the height of the conflict in 2015. The violence erupted as US President Donald Trump seeks to build a friendship with Russia’s Vladimir Putin with some analysts linking the escalation to the potential thaw in ties. Russia and Ukraine as well as the rebels have agreed on a midnight (2200 GMT) deadline for the withdrawal of all heavy weapons from Avdiivka -an industrial town of

Avdiivka but there were no major attacks on the city itself,” regional police spokeswoman Nataliya Shyman told AFP.

Power plant silenced

Most residents of this blue-collar town work in a major coke plant that has been heavily damaged by the shelling. The town remained without electricity on Saturday and with only spo-

radic power supplies to heat homes against the winter chill and limited supplies of water. The giant plant provides electricity for much of the region and has been the target of previous deadly rebel attacks. Plant spokesman Dmytro Murashko told AFP that work brigades would try again Saturday to repair broken power lines after shelling halted their earlier efforts. Friday was one of the bloodiest days with nine civilians killed -- two of them inside the town. The call to withdraw heavy weapons was under the coordination of mediators from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). It provides for the “withdrawal by 5 February 2017 into permanent storage sites of all weapons regulated by Minsk agreements to the distances defined in them and beyond the respective lines.”

TEHRAN, FEB 4 (AGENCIES): Iran is to deploy missiles for a Revolutionary Guards exercise today in a show of defiance a day after the United States imposed sanctions over a ballistic missile test launch last weekend. The Guards’ Sepahnews website said the manoeuvres in northeastern province of Semnan were aimed at demonstrating their “complete preparedness to deal with the threats” and “humiliating sanctions” from Washington. “Different types of domestically produced radar and missile systems, command and control centres, and cyber warfare systems will be used in this exercise,” it said. A list of the missiles to be deployed published later on the website showed they were of very short range -- up to 75 kilometers (47 miles). US President Donald Trump imposed new sanctions on Iran yesterday over its test launch of a medium-range ballistic missile. Hours later, Defense Secretary Mattis said that Iran was “the single biggest state sponsor of terrorism in the world” but added that Washington had no plans to increase troop numbers in Middle East in response.

Defense Minister Tomomi Inada. But in what could been seen as a subtle prod to Japan to do more, he added: “But make no mistake: in my meetings with Japanese leaders, both our nations recognize that we must not be found complacent in the face of the emerging challenges we face. “As our alliance grows, it will be important for both our nations to continue investing in our defense personnel and capabilities.” Mattis said Tokyo’s financial support for U.S. troops in Japan had been a “model of cost-sharing” while Inada told the same news conference there had been no discussion of

claimed also by China, an assurance that Tokyo has been keen to hear. Inada said she told Mattis that Japan would play a proactive security role, in line with legal changes enacted under Abe that eased the limits of its pacifist constitution on its military’s operations overseas. At the start of her talks with Mattis, Inada said she hoped his visit to Seoul and Tokyo would deepen three-way security ties. Japan’s relations with South Korea have frayed recently due to a feud over wartime history, just as tensions over North Korea make cooperation vital. “South Korea is an important neighbor,” Inada said. “I want to link Secretary Mattis’ visit to Japan and South Korea to the further deepening of defense cooperation among the three countries.” Japan’s relations with South Korea have frayed recently due to a feud over wartime history, just as tensions over North Korea make cooperation between the two allies vital. Japan last month temporarily recalled its ambassador to South Korea over a statue near the Japanese consulate in Busan city commemorating Korean “comfort women”.

Mattis reaffirms US ties with Japan

TOKYO, FEB 4 (AGENCIES): U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis wrapped up a visit to Japan on Saturday reaffirming Washington’s commitment to its defense treaty with Tokyo amid concerns about President Donald Trump’s approach to the region and the alliance. Mattis reiterated that provocations by North Korea, which is advancing its nuclear weapons and missile programs, as well as China’s growing assertiveness in the South and East China Seas, left no room for doubt about U.S. commitment to Japan’s defense. That was similar to the message that Mattis making his first overseas trip since taking office - delivered in South Korea, Washington’s other key Asian ally, earlier in the week. He appeared eager to reassure Japan of U.S. resolve, after a 2016 election campaign in which Trump suggested both South Korea and Japan were benefiting from a U.S. security umbrella without sharing enough of the costs. “The U.S.-Japan alliance is critical to ensuring that this region remains safe and secure – not just now, but for years to come,” Mattis told a joint news conference with Japanese

Infotainment Shabana Azmi: Portrayal of Hindi film heroine has changed

Nepal at India Art Fair: Of political satire, human emotions and feminism

P

olitical satire, women’s empowerment, human emotions and the struggle post the 2015 earthquake -- the Nepal Art Council’s booth focuses on different aspects of the lives of people under one roof at the ongoing India Art Fair. With six artists, the booth may have fewer photographs and paintings on display, but there is much that resonates through the works of art, each of which has a story to tell. Ta k e a r t i s t S u n i l Sigdel’s “Peace Owners” featuring three political leaders -- newly-elected US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean supremo is painted with a twist, a touch of ‘Bodhisattva’ influenced by the paintings on Lord Buddha. “And here lies the political satire: These leaders are known for their hawkishness but their eyes are similar to Lord Buddha’s

(in the hope that peace will prevail),” Dina Bagdel, an executive board member of the Nepal Art Council, told IANS. Sigdel is a multidisciplinary artist who is known for works that explore socio-political issues through the juxtaposition of the local flavours. The collection also brings the socio-economic as well as human suffering and loss that the country had to go through after the massive earthquake 2015 that jolted the nation by its roots and claimed over 9,000 lives. “The devastation that the country faced was enormous and we have still not recovered. Things have not improved and people are left to suffer under miserable circumstances. The artists have tried to convey this through their works,” Nepal Art Council Vice President Sagar Rana told IANS. Drawing inspiration from the ‘Mahabharata’

epic artist Anil Shahi depicts the present state of affairs post the quake. A man is shown lying on the bed of arrows, a visual metaphor for the saga’s Bhishma. His body is covered with small broken houses. Titled as “Leaving I Numb”, the painting is deeply symbolic. Kabi Raj Lama’s lithographic print also echos the disastrous after-effects of the quake, which left large parts of capital Kathmandu and other cities in ruins. His art is a tribute to the courage and resilience of people in the face of the unprecedented tragedy. The image, in monochrome, depicts broken and ruined parts of a house arranged in a transcendental geometric pattern. It also sends a message of hope of a better livelihood that the people are living with. No less meaningful is Sandhya Silwal’s cut-

work made of the local ‘Lokta’ paper. Her pieces may appear delicate but send across a very strong message of feminism. Silwal, through her work, explores the sensitive status of women, their sacrifices, the softness and the strength. Artist Koshal Hamal’s solo presentation has drawn much appreciation from visitors. The canvas has been kept almost blank, deprived of much of the art-work. What remains is an abstract statement with multiple layers that question social and political norms. How valuable ancestral belongings are, even if it is grain is brought alive in an emotional statement by Sanjeev Maharjan. His powerful photograph depicts the body of a man, painted all red and with a bowl-full of grain on his chest. “We are here for the second time. Our beautiful landlocked country has more than just scenic beauty. It has art and the collection is an attempt to bring up the talent that our nation has got. It is a good platform to present our art,” Rana explained. Founded in 2008, India Art Fair is one of South Asia’s leading platforms for modern and contemporary art. The fair, which is being held at the NSIC grounds, will conclude on February 5.

T

he soundtrack to La La Land has topped the UK album chart. It went in at Number One four weeks after its release, after knocking Pete Tong’s ‘Classic House’ down to Number Two. The record is the first soundtrack to top the chart in the UK since Les Miserables in 2013. La La Land recently swept the Golden Globes taking home seven awards. It is also tipped to win big at the Oscars later this

month, where it is nominated 14 times, including Best Score and twice in the Best Song category, for ‘City Of Stars’ and ‘Audition’. The film’s Music Director and Executive Music Producer Marius De Vries told OfficialCharts. com: “This is fantastic. We always knew as we were working on it that we were working on something special, but you can never anticipate whether that specialness will translate into universal – or even

partial – public acceptance. On those rare occasions when it does, it’s always a treat. It’s a great testament to the enormous amount of hard work the entire team put in.” Meanwhile, Ed Sheeran‘s grip on the official UK singles chart isn’t loosening. The singer has now spent four weeks holding the top two positions. ‘ S h a p e O f Yo u ’ notched up sales of 47,000 and 8.8 million streams to keep the top spot this week. In just four weeks, the song has sold a total of 306,000 copies and has been streamed 42.9 million times. Sheeran’s streak of domination now matches the all time record held by Justin Bieber, who’s tracks ‘Love Yourself ’ and ‘Sorry’ also held Number One and Two in the chart for four weeks on the bounce in November and December 2015.

eteran actress Shabana Azmi says there has been a visible and an evident change in the portrayal of Hindi film heroines in the industry. Asked how has cinema has helped in bringing a change, Shabana said, “I think there is a lot of difference now. If you look at the way the Hindi film heroine is portrayed today - from the ‘sati savitri’ she used to be... It has completely changed.” The 66-year-old National Award winner also lauded actresses Vidya Balan and Alia Bhatt for their work. “When you see the girls today... As reflected by many films that Vidya Balan has done or this very young actress Alia Bhatt has done... So it is changing, but definitely there’s a lot more that needs to be done,” she said.

A

ctor Nana Patekar, who has proved his mettle repeatedly in commercial as well as in offbeat movies, says he likes those roles which challenge him to explore something new about his art. At a trailer launch event of his upcoming movie ‘Wedding Anniversary’, Nana said, “Since I belong to the theater (background), I enjoy working in these kind of films which give you a challenge and scope to explore, as an actor. I like to experiment with commercial as well as offbeat movies.” About his film ‘Wedding Anniversary’, the K

actor said that it has an engaging and entertaining story. “It felt very satisfying to be a part of this kind of a film, just after doing an out-and-out commercial movie like ‘Welcome Back’,” he said. The Sudhanshu Jha directorial revolves around a couple (played by Priyanshu Chatterjee and Mahie Gill) who plan to celebrate their first wedding anniversary in Goa. Nana, who plays an old writer, barges into her room late at night. Eventually, she becomes an inspiration for Nana. Talking further about it, Nana said, “’Wedding Anniversary’ is not a typical commercial movie. I like to go into this zone just as I did a Marathi movie called ‘Natsamarat’. We didn’t make any compromise while making this film. All the actors, including Mahie and director Jha, have worked hard for this movie. “Music of the film is also soulful and it goes with the story of the film.” The film is scheduled to release on February 17. I-League: Lajong look to extend winning run

Shillong Lajong FC players during a training session in Shillong on Saturday.

Dimapur, Feb 4 (NPN): A run of three consecutive victories for Shillong Lajong FC has provided t h e s q u a d w i t h ex t r a motivation, but the club is mindful of the challenges ahead, the first of which comes on Sunday when the Reds take on former Hero I-League champions Churchill Brothers at the JN Stadium.

Lajong have experienced a shar p tur naround from their start to the year and aim to continue their winning momentum at their Shillong Fortress backed by the Lajong Faithfuls. Incidentally, the Reds have been undefeated in their last six I-League matches at the JN Stadium, going back to 1st April 2016.

Bilic dismisses Hart rumours London, Feb 4 (Agencies): West Ham manager Slaven Bilic has dismissed reports linking the club with England and Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart. The shotstopper is half-way through a seasonlong loan with Torino but he is expected to return to England when his contract expires at the end of the season. A return to Manchester City is unlikely after he fell down the pecking order under Pep Guardiola but the 29-year-old is understood to be keen on returning to the Premier League. West Ham have been linked with a move for the player but Bilic insists he is happy with his first-choice goalkeeper Darren Randolph and Adrian. “We’re not linked with him. Well, basically we are linked with every player,” Bilic said on Friday. “On one hand I rate Joe Hart highly, he’s a great goalkeeper and a great personality.” “But on the other hand I said in every transfer window if there is one position that we are not even thinking about changing that’s the goalkeeping position. I already have two great goalkeepers so that is not the case, no.”

To e x t e n d t h e i r winning streak, however, the Reds will have to get the better of Churchill, something they have yet to do in an I-League home match. The two sides have clashed four times in Shillong in the league’s previous years, with two draws and two victories for the Goan team. Speaking at the pre-match press

conference today, Shillong Lajong coach Thangboi Singto said, “Winning gives us extra motivation, but we’ve been telling the players that tomorrow will be another big match, another big challenge. Looking at Churchill’s team sheet you see strong players experienced at the Indian level. We have to be on our toes and give it our best.” Like Lajong, Churchill also lost their opening three fixtures, but the Goan club looked to make a strong comeback and they pulled off two away draws while defeating defending champions Bengaluru FC 2-1 at home. Churchill are currently eighth in the table on five points, while Lajong are in fifth position on nine points. Representing the Goan club at the press interaction today was the team manager Denzil Ferrao, who said, “It has been a very challenging start to the season for us. We h a d j u s t f i ve days to prepare the team ahead of the I-League and I’m confident that as the tournament goes on we will play better.”

Paris kicks off bidding for 2024 Olympics Paris, Feb 4 (IANS): The Paris 2024 Bid Committee has marked a milestone in its bid to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games with a special presentation here. The event was participated by Paris 2024 leadership, top athletes, political and business leaders. Speaking at the event, Paris 2024 Co-Chair Tony Estanguet said Paris has launched the bid 18 months ago, the bidding team has put athletes at the heart of the plans and has developed a compact plan with 85 per cent of venues being within 10 km. Details of the ultracompact, city-centre inspired concept were the highlights of the candidature file the bidding team submitted to International Olympic Committee. Pa r i s ’ 2 0 2 4 h a s a bold vision to deliver the most sustainable Games ever, with 95 per cent of venues either pre-existing or temporary structures, in addition, a ground breaking carbon emissions strategy closely aligned with Olympic Agenda 2020 and the Paris Climate Agreement is also under plan.

Terry not planning to retire L o nd o n , F e b 4 (Agencies): John Terry says he does not plan to follow former Chelsea team-mate Frank Lampard into retirement anytime soon, and hopes to play for a “couple more years”. Lampard, 38, called time on his career on Thursday, with Ter r y labelling him Chelsea’s greatest-ever player. Terry is two years younger than Lampard, and has told Soccer AM’s Tubes that he plans to keep playing, even though he has found first-team action hard to come by this season. “It’s been ok for me. I am Chelsea through and through,” he said. “As a player you have to adapt and adjust as you get older. Realistically can I play every week? “I am in great condition and feeling great but the boys that are playing at the minute have been unbelievable so as a player you have to accept that. And more importantly the team is top of the league and flying, so as a fan, let alone as a player, I am delighted at the moment.” “For a lot of people that’s hard to get their head round but the age I am at, you have to accept and

understand you are getting older. I still feel I have a few years left me. I am hoping that’s at Chelsea but we will see. I am doing my coaching badge at the minute so I am progressing slowly but surely with that.” Asked about what the future might hold for him when he does retire, Terry said, “I would like to manage at some point and test myself again. I have achieved what I have achieved as a footballer but I think all the managers I have had I have learnt a bit of good from all of them and some bad from all of them. I would like to put that into practice and give it a go somewhere.” “Whether that right opportunity comes up for me and my family we will have to wait and see, but I feel I can play for a couple more years at least.”

pace that four Arsenal players couldn’t disrupt. Hazard started the run from the center circle. Laurent Koscielny was the first opponent brushed aside and Francis Coquelin was left spinning, trying forlornly to put in a tackle before slipping to the turf. Hazard just continued to zip forward. Koscielny had darted back in defense, but was as ineffective immobilizing Hazard a second time. Hazard weaved his way past the captain and then outmuscled Shkodran Mustafi before slotting a low shot past goalkeeper Petr Cech. The Belgian

international has 10 goals in 23 appearances this season, eclipsing last season’s haul of four in 31. There was awe at the goal across the stadium: Owner Roman Abramovich was high-fiving people in his executive box and manager Antonio Conte flung himself into the crowd behind the dugout, swarmed by fans. It was a day when they had much to celebrate, starting with Alonso’s 13thminute goal. Diego Costa initially nodded a cross against the bar and Alonso darted in to meet the rebound with a header. The wing back had caught the side of Hector Bellerin’s head with his arm as he leapt over the defender but he was not penalized. Fo l l ow i n g c o n c u s s i o n protocols, a dazed Bellerin was forced off, injured. Little went Arsenal’s way at Stamford Bridge. Even the usually reliable Cech was exposed on his return to his former club. With five minutes to go, the goalkeeper’s misplaced clearance went straight to former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, who chipped the ball into an empty net. Arsenal’s only achievement was denying Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois a clean sheet, with substitute Olivier Giroud heading in a stoppage-time consolation.

NEW DELHI, Feb 4 (Agencies): A new constitutional and financial model received preliminary approval despite the BCCI voted against it at the ICC Board meeting in Dubai on Saturday. H owe ve r, a f i n a l consideration will be taken by the ICC Board in April. Vi k r a m L i m aye, B C C I r e p r e s e n t a t ive, expressed his concer n over both the documents especially in light of the insufficient time available to the Supreme Court appointed Committee of Administrators to take an informed view on the said proposal, and also there being no scientific basis behind the percentage distribution allocation that was being proposed other than “good faith and equity”. Limaye also requested that both proposals be taken up at the next ICC board meeting in April 2017. The ICC chairman requested each member to vote for/against these proposals being base documents, to be taken up for final approval in April 2017, it is being understood that members could suggest changes to these documents between now and the next board meeting.

Chelsea captain Gary Cahill congratulates Eden Hazard after the Belgian scores for the Blues in the second half.

London, Feb 4 (Agencies): Eden Hazard ran half the length of the pitch, fending off Arsenal’s brittle resistance, to score a mesmerizing solo goal as Chelsea coasted to a 3-1 victory on its charge to the Premier League title. A goal of such exceptional quality, between Marcos Alonso’s header and Cesc Fabregas’ lob into an empty net, embodied the leaders’ transformation since a 3-0 loss in the reverse fixture in September. That defeat saw an eight-point chasm open up between Chelsea, then in eighth place, and frontrunner Manchester City.

Mumbai, Feb 4 (Agencies): Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar on Saturday said that he is looking forward to the ICC Women’s World Cup scheduled later this year as the event has a big role to play in globalising the game. “The inclusion of Thailand in World Cup cricket may be a surprise for some of you but it is a reality! Thailand will be bidding to feature in this year’s ICC Women’s World Cup when it will play in the Qualifiers in Colombo next week,” Tendulkar wrote in a column for the ICC. “Subsequently, the I C C Wo m e n’s Wo r l d Cup 2017 in the United Kingdom in June-July will see top notch cricket being played by some of the finest and exemplary women cricketers from across the world,” he added.

Now, Chelsea is 12 points in front of north London clubs Tottenham and Arsenal at the summit. Coming four days after a home loss to Watford, it was another unsettling day for a bedraggled Arsenal and manager Arsene Wenger, who was forced to watch from the stands as he continued his fourmatch touchline ban for pushing a fourth official. The Frenchman was right in the middle of the celebrating Chelsea fans as Hazard produced a moment of magic eight minutes into the second half. It was a fusion of strength, aggression and

The former batsman said expansion of women’s cricket is also a catalyst for gender equality and rights. “The women cricketers have caught the fancy of cricket aficionados around the world with stellar performances and have increased their audience. “They have spawned interest in young girls to play the sport and also helping generate a larger

following for the game at a time when the game is seeking to expand its footprint globally and become relevant in noncricket playing countries,” he said. “While gender bias has been the bane of many aspects of the world, the sports narrative seems to be different. It is heartening to see that cricket is making strides in helping women occupy their pride of place in the annals of cricketing history,” he added. Tendulkar hoped that Indian stars such as pacer Jhulan Goswami and batter Mithali Raj will do their bit to light up the tournament. “There is our very own Jhulan Goswami, who is quick and gets that extra bit from the wicket and Mithali Raj, our seasoned campaigner from India,” he said.

Pune, Feb 4 (PTI): Leander Paes’ hopes of creating a world record in Davis Cup were dashed when the veteran Indian and Vishnu Vardhan lost the third rubber to strong rivals Artem Sitak and Michael Venus, who kept the New Zealand alive in the Asia-Oceania Group I Davis Cup tie, here today. Down 0-2 after losing the first two singles to the home team, Sitak and Venus rallied to take a convincing 3-6 6-3 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 win in 2 hours and 30 minutes. The defeat for Paes and his partner meant that the 43-year-old Indian stalwart could not overtake Italian Nicola Pietrangeli for most wins in doubles in Davis Cup history. The two players are tied on 42 wins. India, who are now 2-1 ahead in the tie, will now need to win one of the two reverse singles tomorrow to clinch a place in the second round. India had taken a 2-0 lead on day one with Yuki Bhambri and Ramkumar Ramanathan winning the first two singles. Tomorrow Ramkumar will take on Finn Tearney before Yuki takes on Jose Statham in the final rubber of the tie. Paes and

The Committee of BCCI Administrators is now in place and one of their immediate tasks is to fast track the preparations for the IPL beginning April 5. In a release, the BCCI said 750 players have registered for the auction.

Vardhan started in style and raised the 4000-strong capacity crowd’s hopes at the Shiv Chatrapati Sports Complex by clinching the opening set in 28 minutes by breaking Venus in the sixth game. But the New Zealand pair fought back superbly by winning the second set in 32 minutes by breaking Paes’ service once and

then clinched the third set, in which the Indians squandered two break point chances. With the momentum having shifted to the visitors, it was no surprise when they got an early service break, in the second game of the fourth set when Vardhan dropped his serve, before closing out the set and the match.

Kolkata Knight Riders are expected to do a lot of buying at the auction, having got only 14 players in their roster so far. The auction will be followed by a day long IPL Franchise Workshop on February 21. In December, the big names that were released from their respective squads were India pacer Ishant Sharma, South African speedster Dale Steyn and former England batting star Kevin Pietersen, who has now ruled himself out of the upcoming edition. As many as 140 cricketers, including 44 overseas players, were retained, while 63 were let go by the eight franchises.
