Steps taken to promote entrepreneurship in NE

NEW DELHI, FEB 3 (NPN): Union minister of state (independent charge) development of north eastern region (DoNER), Dr. Jitendra Singh, said that the government has initiated and implemented several initiatives to promote entrepreneurship in North-East.

In a statement laid in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, Dr. Singh said that steps have been taken for improvement in enabling environment and vibrant ecosystem to enable entrepreneurs to tap the potential of the region.

He disclosed that important connectivity projects for capital rail, air and road connectivity would be completed in the next two to three years.

Dr.Singh said development of Inland Waterways-National Waterways 2 and National Waterways 16 will provide connectivity to Haldia through IndoBangladesh Protocol Route and greatly benefit the eco-system by reducing cost.

bio-refinery at Numaligarh; Bamboo Industrial Park at Dima Hasao. Further, he said that entrepreneurs in the region have also been benefitted under various credit related schemes.

The Start-up India Initiatives aims at fostering entrepreneurship and promoting innovation by creating and enabling eco-system. Under this, 408 startups have been recognized in the NER, Dr.Singh said.

Promoting higher education in NER: Dr. Jitendra Singh said that Government of India has given focused attention on promoting Higher Education in the region.

In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Dr.Singh said that each North East State has one Central University with Manipur having three and Assam having two.

Besides, the Ministry of Education has set up three Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT) in Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode in the North Eastern Region in addition to already existing Centrally Funded Higher Educational Institutions namely, 11 Central Universities, 8 National Institutes of Technol-

ogy (NITs), Indian Institute of Management, Shillong, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, North Eastern Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST), Arunachal Pradesh and Central Institute of Technology, Kokrajhar.

Also, there are two Central Institutes of Hotel Management (CIHM) run by the Ministry of Tourism at Guwahati and in Shillong offering hospitality courses. As per North Eastern Council (NEC) General Guidelines 2020, he said promotion of NER is one of the focused sectors.

Utilization of funds allocated to NE States: Dr. Jitendra Singh, in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, said that during the period from F.Y. 2014-15 to 2020-21 (as on 31.12.2020) funds amounting to Rs.13199.36 crore were released by DoNER ministry to North Eastern States including Assam, for projects sanctioned under various schemes of the Ministry. Utilization certificates of Rs.12242.34 crore has been received from the state governments during the period from F.Y.2014-15 to 2020-21(as on 31.12.2020), he stated.

Potential antiviral drug for COVID-19 identified LONDON, FEB 3 (PTI): Researchers have identified an antiviral drug which is highly effective against the COVID-19 causing coronavirus, and could have major implications in how future disease outbreaks are managed.

The team, including researchers at the University of Nottingham in the UK, found that the plant-derived antiviral, at small doses, triggers a highly effective broad-spectrum host-centred antiviral innate immune response against three major types of human respiratory viruses, including COVID-19.

Given that acute respiratory virus infections caused by different viruses are clinically indistinguishable, an effective broad-spectrum that can target different virus types at the same time could significantly improve clinical management, the researchers said.

According to the study, published in the journal Viruses, an antiviral of this type could potentially be made available for community use to control active infection and its spread.

The key features based on cell and animal studies, which make thapsigargin a promising antiviral are that it is effective against viral infection when used before or during active infection, the researchers said. The drug is also able to prevent a virus from making new copies of itself in cells for at least 48 hours after a single 30-minute exposure, they said.

The researchers noted that thapsigargin is stable in acidic pH, as found in the stomach, and therefore can be taken orally.

They said the drug could, therefore, be administered without the need for injections or hospital admission. It is not sensitive to virus resistance, and is at least several hundred-fold more effective than current antiviral options, according to the study.

NEW DELHI, FEB 3 (NPN): The 15 Finance Commission (15 FC) in its report ‘Finance Commission in COVID times’ (Vol IV) mentioned that Nagaland had the second highest debt in the country. Though the State’s Debt/GSDP had reduced from 55.5% in 2011–12 to 42.7 in 2018– 19, 15 FC said that it was still much higher than the National Health Education Standards (NEHS) average of 29.61%.

It pointed out that debt should be consolidated in line with the new FRBM Act and the recommendations of FC-XV. Further, the commission also noted that the State needed to restructure and rationalise its expenditure priorities. The committed expenditure (including GIA Salary) of Nagaland was 67.3% of its TRE in 2018–19

(all States average 50.6%), on the other hand, capital expenditure in Nagaland declined between 2011–12 and 2018–19, both as a percentage of GSDP (from 10.3% to 5.9%) and total expenditure (20.4% to 12.8%).

It said that the State need to take measures to reduce burden of committed expenditure to free up resources for development expenditure.

At the same time, the 15 FC said that the State also needed to reduce its infrastructure deficit by increasing capital expenditure and finding alternate sources of funding like PPP. As per the Ranking in NITI Aayog’s Sustainable Development Goals Index (2019), Nagaland was placed 19th out of 29 States.

The State needs to ensure that benefits of economic growth trickle down to all sections of society, the report stated.

Recommendations The 15th Finance Commission (XVFC) has recommended Rs. Rs. 21249 crore as post-devolution revenue deficit/surplus (grants in aid for revenue deficit) for the period 2021-26. As per the recommendations the post-devolution revenue deficit will be covered for the following period-- Rs. 4557 crore (2021-22), Rs. 4530 crore (2022-23), Rs. 4447 crore (2023-24), Rs. 4068 crore (2024-25) and Rs. 3647 (2025-26).

Similarly, 15 FC also recommended the pre-devolution revenue deficit for the period- Rs. 8304 crore (2021-22) Rs. 8699 crore (2022-23), Rs. 9138 (202324), Rs. 9397 (2024-25 and Rs. DIMAPUR: Northern Sumi Hoho (NSH) has appealed to the state government to transform the foothill road project into reality by extending “all the possibilities and priorities.”

In a press release, NSH president Kughavi Chophy and general secretary Vikai Yeptho maintained that completion of the foothill road would not only boost state’s economy, but will also produce more young entrepreneurs, which it said would “definitely contribute to our state economy and unemployment.” Meanwhile, NSH has expressed appreciation to Nagaland Foothill Road coordination committee (NFHRCC) for its tireless efforts and extending all its valuable time and resources towards early completion of the “Dream Road project”.

Correspondent KOHIMA, FEB 3 (NPN): The two-day 21st Technical Coordination Committee (TCC) and North Eastern Regional Power Committee (NERPC) meeting hosted by State power department got underway at Hotel Vivor here on Wednesday.

Delivering the keynote address on the occasion, TCC chairman and power engineerin-chief Shikato Sema expressed concern on the alarming figures of outstanding dues to NEEPCO, OTPC and NTPC and urged the constituent members to take extraordinary measures to clear the dues as financial health of those generating companies was crucial to sustainability of the region as a whole.

Shikato said the power demand met from the Northeastern (NER) Grid had increased from around 1.5 GW in 2009-10 to approximately 3 GW in 2019-20, and from 690 MU per month in 2009-10 to 1,360 MU per month in 2019-20, which is about 100% growth in the last 10 years.

According to DIPR report, Mon Childline team gave a presentation on the basic concept and functioning of the programme and its achievement since its inception which includes one child abuse case and support to 28 families during the pandemic.

Childline team also made an appeal to all line Departments to help them in various capacities so as to make the programme more visible and efficient.

DC Mon addressed issues raised by the team and assured them full cooperation and support to resolve

It may be noted that Childline Mon is part of a national programme which was launched in Mon on August 2020, to assist, aid and rescue children in distress through a 24/7 Toll free no 1098.

Childline teams on receiving a distress call arrives at the destination within 60 minutes and depending on the case, rehabilitation and constant follow up on the well-being of the child is provided.

Childline reaches out to children from 0-18 years of age and in extreme emergency cases, up to 25 years of age.

borrowed within Phek town at minimal rental charge for maintenance of street library.

Tetseo expressed gratitude towards District Administration and DLCW MSK-BBBP, Phek for acknowledging his effort.

He also acknowledged the colony youth for tirelessly working round the clock, in assisting him financially and materially and thanked every individual who donated in books and in kind.

He informed that those willing to donate books were welcome as he would come up with more street libraries in the future.

Guest speaker, SDO (C) Phek, Zhoi Lohe maintained that reading would improve and enhance the thought process, vocabulary and writing skills among the people. Presently, he said the installed capacity of NER Grid was approximately 4.5 GW, which was around 150% of maximum demand of the region, even as transmission sector also witnessed rapid growth post Independence.

He said a slew of regulatory and policy reforms have been initiated in the country’s power sector in the last two decades, which include, among others, implementation of ABT mechanism, open access in transmission system, introduction of power exchanges, DSM regulations, introduction of Renewable Energy Certificate mechanism, etc.

Mentioning that one of the recent remarkable initiatives in Indian power sector was the launch of real time market (RTM) with effect from June 1, 2020, Shikato said prior to this market option available for power procurement/sale was day-ahead market.

However, with the launch of RTM, constituents across the country were getting an option to meet their energy requirements closer to real-time operation, he said, adding that the entire Northeastern States, including Nagaland, were actively participating in RTM to optimise their portfolio and meet their requirement.

He emphasised that since almost all States had completed implementation of Advanced Distribution Management Solutions (ADMS) pilot project, there was a need to take up ADMS project implementation for the entire State as early as possible from PSDF funding.

Referring to Scheduling, Accounting, Metering and Settlement of Transactions (SAMAST) project taken up as common for all the North-eastern States, Shikato said as it was already under implementation in some States, the rest left out need to be pushed for early implementation.

To optimise the benefit, he said downstream connectivity considerations should also be planned and considered accordingly during conceptualisation itself by all concerned, especially during project appraisals.

He said the downstream connectivity issue of 400/220 KV sub-station at Zhadima in Nagaland and 11 KV downstream connectivity for North Eastern Region Power System Improvement Project (NERPSIP) in Nagaland were classic examples where the beneficiary States were not properly apprised of its responsibilities.

Members from Central undertakings and dignitaries from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram are taking part in the two-day meet.

DDLC: Dimapur District Ladies Club (DDLC) expressed deep grief and sorrow over the demise of Nagaland chief secretary, Temjen Toy. “Death can never take a good man away, for, in the hearts of the people he inspired, the legacy remains and continues throughout generations”, DDLC stated.

The appointments will be made in two categories – in newly and recently provincialised schools where 16,484 teachers and nonteaching staff will be given appointment, while another 13,216 new appointments will be given at the level of lower, upper primary levels and Sarva Siksha Abhhiyan along with assitant teachers at the secondary level, he said.

Five thousand more teachers will get appointment. Their verification process is pending, he said.

The Minister said that a blue-print is also being prepared to appoint language teachers in the state with the focus of tribal languages and of the tea garden communities.

Referring to the ongoing COVID-19 vaccination programme, Sarma, who is also the state health minister, said Assam is “doing extremely well” and is jabbing more than expected with the daily target being exceeded in most of the places.

G u wa h ati , F e b 3 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam on February 7 and lay the foundation stone of two medical colleges and launch the scheme for the upgradation of the state highways, state Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday.

This will be Modi’s second visit to the pollbound state in a fortnight.

The assembly election in Assam is due in MarchApril this year.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman too is scheduled to visit Guwahati on February 6 and be present at a programme where money will be given to the bank accounts of eight lakh tea garden workers in the state, SAra told press conference here.

The prime minister will visit Dhekiajuli from where he will lay the foun-

dation of two medical colleges in Charaideo and Bishwanath districts. He will also launch the ‘Assam Mala’ scheme under which the state public works department will upgrade the state highways.

Work will be taken up in 2500 km to be taken up at the initial stage, he said adding the estimated Rs 5,000 crore project is expected to be completed within 15 years.

In the February 6 function where Sitharaman will be the chief guest, the state government will transfer Rs 3,000 each to the bank accounts of eight lakh tea garden workers which will involve an expenditure of Rs 2.4 crore, Sarma said.

“Post-demonetisation and opening of bank accounts, we have been depositing Rs 2,500 in each account. This year we have increased it to Rs 3,000,”

Correspondent Diphu Feb 3: Nearly two hundred and nine (209) persons, including a large number of children, were admitted to Diphu Medical College and Hospital and in Bakulia Civil Hospital, around 65 kilometers from Diphu, since yesterday for acute food poisoning.

The incident happened within hours after thousands consumed packed lunch provided at an official meeting organized at Diphu Medical College and Hospital to mark the beginning of the first academic session of the institution on Tuesday.

It may be mentioned that the impressive ceremony was attended by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma which witness a gathering of more than ten thousand people from various walks of life. Neither police nor the district administration has confirmed any causality. New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI): The Income Tax Department has detected tax evasion of more than Rs 200 crore after it raided three “leading” entities of Assam involved in construction and tea garden businesses, the CBDT said on Wednesday.

The search and survey operation was carried out on January 29 at about 20 locations in Guwahati, Tezpur, Nalbari (all in Assam), Delhi, Gurugram, and in West Bemgal’s Kolkata, Siliguri and Alipurduar.

“Total evasion of income in these cases exceeds Rs 200 crore. Nine bank lockers have been found, which are yet to be operated,” a CBDT spokesperson said in a statement.

Cash worth Rs 42 lakh was also seized during the operation, it added.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) frames policy for the tax department.

The main allegations against the three groups, it said, were that they had been inflating expenses and had taken accommodation entries in the form of nongenuine unsecured loans and security premium.

Some digital evidences recovered showed “discrepancy” in cash balance of Rs 4.20 crore along with bogus booking of expenses at the end of financial year, it claimed.

“Financial statement showing Rs 32 crore profit with cash balance of Rs 12 crore was found that did not match with the regular books,” the statement said.

Digital back-up of servers, computers and phones had been taken for further examination which will give actual picture of the business of the assessees, it said.

Correspondent SHILLONG, FEB 3: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organizations (CoMSO) on Wednesday has threatened to resort to agitation if the Central Government further delays appointment for discussion on the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the State.

Home Minister Amit Shah, who recently visited Shillong, had assured Chief Minister Conrad Sangma that he would the State Cabinet and pro-ILP groups in New Delhi to deliberate on the contentious issue.

Blast damages Assam school near Mizoram border Hailakandi (Assam), Feb 3 (PTI): A school building was damaged in a powerful bomb explosion in Hailakandi district of Assam near the state’s border with Mizoram on Wednesday, police said.

The blast took place at Kachurthal area of the district damaging the Muliwala Lower Primary School.

No one was injured in the explosion which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday.

The police began investigating the incident but the identity of those involved in it is yet to be ascertained.

Security has been stepped up in the area, police said.

Walls of the school building and its water tank were damaged in the blast.

There was tension along the Assam-Mizoram border for days in October and November last year.

Several people were injured in a clash between the people of Cachar district of Assam and Mizorams Kolasib district, during which a number of makeshift huts were torched.

Waiting for SC permission to start fresh NRC updation: Himanta G u wa h ati , F e b 3 (PTI): The Assam government is waiting for the permission of the Supreme Court to initiate a fresh drive to update National Register of Citizens (NRC), Health, Education and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday.

The state NRC Coordinator has already submitted “a very good affidavit” in the Gauhati High Court highlighting why we need a fresh update of the NRC, the minister said at a press conference here.

The updation will “mainly depend on the Supreme Court permission”, Sarma said.

The final NRC was published on August 31, 2019 by excluding 19,06,657 persons with a total of 3,11,21,004 names included out of the 3,30,27,661 applicants.

After publication of the final NRC, almost all the stakeholders and political parties had criticised it as a faulty document citing many cases of exclusion of indigenous people and inclusion of illegal migrants.

The Supreme Court had on January 29 last issued notice to the Assam NRC State Coordinator, Hitesh Dev Sarma, on a plea seeking directions issued by him for unilaterally deleting names from the final NRC. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India SA Bobde heard the submissions of senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who appeared on behalf of the petitioners, Jamaat-e-Ulema and All Assam Minorities Students Union (AAMSU), and issued the notice.

The petitioners sought intervention of the court against the directions/communications sent by Sarma to all the Deputy Commissioners and District Registrars of Citizen Registration in Assam, directing deletion of ineligible person along with their descendants,who had already been includ-

ed in the final NRC draft which was prepared under constant monitoring of the apex court.

With the state assembly elections only months away, the minister attacked the Congress, accusing it of dividing Assam in many ways and bringing the level of political debate to a “very low level”.

“They have no issues to focus upon and are making useless statements on which there can be no debate. They no longer raise the issues of NRC or implementation of clause six of the Assam Accord”, he said.

Manipur doctors protest against ‘mixopathy’ Correspondent IMPHAL, Feb 3: Members of Indian Medical Association (IMA) Manipur state branch on Wednesday staged a hunger strike in Imphal in protest against mixopathy.

T h e h u n ge r s t r i k e staged in Imphal’s IMA complex was a part of a nationwide protest by doctors against permission to Ayurvedic doctors to conduct surgeries.

IMA Manipur state branch observed the hunger strike as part of the all India relay hunger strike launched by the IMA starting from February 1. The strike will continue till February 14.

New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI): Teen climate activist Greta Thunberg and US Vice President Kamala Harris’ niece are among several people from the international community who have come out in support of the farmers’ protest against the Centre’s new agriculture laws.

Their remarks came soon after international pop star Rihanna shared a news article highlighting the Centre’s crackdown on the farmers by cutting off Internet services in many regions.

“We stand in solidarity with the #FarmersProtest in India,” Thunberg had tweeted on Tuesday, tagging a CNN news report headlined: “India cuts internet around New Delhi as protesting farmers clash with police.”

She also shared “a toolkit for those who want to help”.

“Here’s a toolkit if you want to help,” tweeted Thunberg, which takes the user to a document containing details on ways to support the protest.

Thousands of farmers, mostly from Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, have been protesting at Delhi’s borders for over two months demanding repeal of the three farm laws and legal guarantee of minimum support price for their crops.

Farmer unions have announced a countrywide blockade of national and state highways for three hours on Saturday when they would block in protest against the Internet ban in areas near their agitation sites, harassment allegedly meted out to them by authorities and other issues.

Tikait holds show of strength; warns govt of ‘gaddi wapsi’ demand Jind (Har), Feb 3 (PTI): In a show of strength by protesting farmers, Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait on Wednesday addressed a massive rally and warned the government it could find it difficult to stay on in power if the new agri-marketing laws are not repealed.

Just before Tikait was to begin his speech at the ‘’mahapanchayat’’ in Kandela village, the makeshift stage on which the farmer leaders had gathered collapsed under their weight.

Nobody was reported hurt and Tikait went on to address the gathering. But the episode triggered a commotion and he and the event organisers had to repeatedly tell people to maintain calm.

Calling for a “wapsi” (withdrawal) of the new central laws, Tikait indirectly warned the Narendra Modi government that it could lose its “gaddi” (power) if the agitation continues.

Patna, Feb 3 (IANS): The Bihar police has said that any person disturbing the law and order situation, holding violent protests, blocking roads and indulging in criminal activities will be strictly dealt with.

They will also not be eligible for any government job or contract.

This order comes days after the Bihar government’s decree of legal action against people making objectionable remarks against ministers, public representatives and officials on social media, which had led to a massive uproar in the state.

Bihar Director General of Police S.K. Singhal has said in an order that if a person disturbs the law and order situation, blocks roads, indulges in any criminal act and is charged by the police for this act, then there should be a specific and clear mention of such acts in that person’s character verification report.

New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI): Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar Wednesday said the Centre is not holding any informal talk with protesting farmers and described putting up of more barricades and suspending internet in and around agitation sites as law and order issues related to local administrations.

The last and 11th round of meeting between the government and 41 protesting unions, held on January 22, was inconclusive. The Centre had asked unions to reconsider the government’s proposal to suspend new farm laws for 18 months.

Asked if the government was engaging with the unions informally, Tomar told PTI, “No. We will inform when formal talks will be held.”

M

yanmar’s democracy has been hijacked for long periods by military dictatorship through coups. The first coup took place in 1962 when Gen. Ne Win ousted the first prime minister U Nu and the military junta ruled through its own Burma Socialist Party(BSP) till 1988. After student protests nationwide, the military’s puppet party- State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC)-suppressed the agitations where several thousands were killed. During the crisis, Aung San Suu Kyi emerged as a national icon. When the military junta arranged an election in 1990, her party, the National League for Democracy, won 81% of the seats in the government (392 out of 492). However, the military junta refused to recognise the results and continued ruling the country as the State Law and Order Restoration Council(SLORC). Aung San Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest from 1989 to 2010.

Her party boycotted the 2010 elections, resulting in a decisive victory for the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP). Aung San Suu Kyi became a Pyithu Hluttaw MP while her party won 43 of the 45 vacant seats in the 2012 by-elections. In the 2015 elections, her party won a landslide victory, taking 86% of the seats in the Assembly of the Union - well more than the 67% supermajority needed to ensure that its preferred candidates were elected president and second vice president in the presidential electoral college. Although she was prohibited from becoming the president due to a clause in the constitution - her late husband and children are foreign citizens - she assumed the newly created role of state counsellor of Myanmar, a role akin to a prime minister or a head of government. Though in high position, Aung San Suu Kyi the military junta’s powerful chief Min Aung Hlaing actually wielded the power.On November 8,2020 elections, Aung Saan Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) swept the polls by winning almost 80% of the vote, while the Army-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) suffered a humiliating defeat. The voters gave the NLD 396 seats, while the USDP ended up with just 33.The USDP did not accept the result. The military backed the USDP’s allegations of fraud, without offering any evidence.

Myanmar’s Union Election Commission dismissed the allegations and re-endorsed the results. On February 1, 2021, hours before the new Parliament was to convene, the Generals moved into action. They detained State Counsellor Suu Kyi, President Win Myint and other top leaders of the NLD. They declared a state of emergency for a year, and took power in their hands.

Myanmar, which started a fragile transition to democracy ten years ago after decades of brutal military dictatorship, is back in the hands of the Generals.

Coups in Myanmar are not unexpected. They happen because the military hold majoritarian prejudices and see liberal democracy as the enemy of the state. For the Tatmadaw(military junta) Aung Saan Suu Kyi was getting too popular for their comfort. It is not wrong to say that Aung Saan Suu Kyi is the face of free democracy in Myanmar. The US and other democracies are concerned about the fate of democracy in Myanamar.

The Tatmadaw will not be bothered unless the world body takes action. For India, it will hope that the junta will keep Indian rebels off its territory. However, with China likely to be the beneficiary, the development should be a concern.

Twitter Locks Out Stop running India down Family Magazine I F ocus on the Family‘s Christian magazine The Daily Citizen was locked out of its Twitter account for a post that the social media giant accused of violating the platform’s rules.

The alleged violation involved a quote from one of The Daily Citizen’s articles that reported on Dr. Rachel Levine, President Biden’s nominee for the Assistant Health and Human Services Secretary, who is transgender. Zachary Mettler, a staff writer for The Daily Citizen, wrote that “Dr. Levine is a transgender woman, that is, a man who believes he is a woman” in the lead paragraph of the article. A paraphrase of the paragraph was posted on Twitter and used to promote a link back to the full article.

The Daily Citizen was sent an email from Twitter indicating their account had been locked because they violated Twitter’s rules, which resulted in the magazine having to delete the tweet.

According to The Daily Citizen’s article regarding the incident, the email from Twitter read as follows: Hi The Daily Citizen, your account, @FocusCitizen has been locked for violating the Twitter Rules. Specifically for: Violating our rules against hateful conduct. You may not promote violence against, threaten, or harass other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease.

Please note that repeated violations may lead to a permanent suspension of your account. Proceed to Twitter now to fix the issue with your account.

The Daily Citizen appealed the violation sending Twitter an email that said: We are writing to appeal Twitter’s decision and contend we have operated within your organization’s regulations. We did nothing of the sort…The tweet pointed to an article at our news outlet, The Daily Citizen, explaining the appointment and Dr. Levine’s controversial history in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic as Pennsylvania’s Health Secretary.

Numerous outlets reported on Levine’ appointment – including President Biden’s White House

– noting Dr. Levin’s transgender identification. Many of the articles and tweets explained that Dr. Levin was born male, believed he is really a woman, had surgery and oppositesex hormones, and now identifies as a woman.

Our tweet does not ‘promote violence against, threaten, or harass’ Dr. Levin.

Yet, we are deeply puzzled about how it was misconstrued to do so. Nowhere in our tweet or article did we encourage such action. As a Christian organization, we would never do so.

We simply explained to our readers the appointment and defined what transgender women are – those born male who believe they are a woman, regardless of whether they have had opposite-sex hormones or surgeries.

We believe Twitter’s blocking of this tweet and lockdown of our account discriminates against Focus on the Family’s The Daily Citizen on the basis of our religious affiliation. The Daily Citizen contests Twitter’s characterization of our message and appeals this decision.

Twitter responded to the appeal concluding that “Our support team has determined that a violation did take place, and therefore we will not overturn our decision…” The social media giant gave instructions of how to restore their account after they delete the tweet calling transgender Dr. Rachel Levine a man which they claim violates their ‘hateful conduct policy‘.

The policy, which was implemented in 2018, says, “We prohibit targeting individuals with repeated slurs, tropes or other content that intends to dehumanize, degrade or reinforce negative or harmful stereotypes about a protected category.

This includes targeted misgendering or deadnaming of transgender individuals.”

The Daily Citizen reported this wasn’t the first time they had been censored for posting on social media platforms. Facebook censored them in October of last year for posting an article about masks. YouTube also censored them by removing a video they posted earlier this month that included President Donald Trump’s remarks claiming voter fraud.

t is unfortunate that leaders like Rahul Gandhi have failed to appreciate simple truths and are undermining the efforts of the Centre and State Govts World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has thanked India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the country’s “continued support to the global COVID-19 response”. In a recent tweet, he said: “Only if we act together, including sharing of knowledge, can we stop this virus and save lives and livelihoods.” The WHO chief was lauding India’s decision to despatch COVID-19 vaccines to several neighbouring countries, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and Nepal, besides Saudi Arabia, Brazil and others.

This was the fourth time in the past year that the WHO chief had hailed the Government’s decisions to contain the pandemic. Last July, he praised India’s efforts to contain the outbreak in Dharavi — considered the biggest slum in the world. He cited this as an example of how, even when the outbreak was very intense, it could be brought under control. Last September, he again praised Modi for his speech to the UN General Assembly in which he said that as the largest vaccine-producing country, India would utilise this strength to distribute it across the world and help the global community.

In November 2020 when Modi spoke to the WHO chief, the latter praised India’s efforts and the Ayushman Bharat programme. In fact, way back in May 2020, the WHO representative in India had described India’s efforts as being “enormous, very impressive”. The WHO also lauded the Uttar Pradesh Government’s COVID management and contract-tracing efforts and said they are worthy of emulation by other States.

Many other international entities are lauding India’s efforts. The United States described India as a “true friend” for deploying its advantage in the pharma sector to meet the vaccine needs of other coun-

tries. The State Department said: “We applaud India’s role in global health, sharing millions of vaccine doses in South Asia.” Applauding India, Congressman Brad Sherman tweeted: “Great to see our ally India purchasing and supplying millions of doses of COVID vaccines, manufactured in India, to its neighbours and nations around the world.” It is important for all citizens to know and digest these facts if only to ward off the negativity that is being spread indiscriminately and irresponsibly by some politicians and, in particular, by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

In fact, while developed nations like the US, the UK, France and Spain are floundering in their efforts, the Modi-led Union Government and the Governments in all States and Union Territories, which are run by a variety of parties, have done remarkably well to join hands and tackle the biggest health crisis in centuries.

Rahul first criticised the lockdown imposed in March 2020 and later ridiculed the Modi Government for lifting it. To buttress his argument, he put out graphs of COVID-19 prevalence in countries like Germany, France and the UK to claim that the virus incidence had come down in those countries after they lifted the lockdown, but in India it had shot up. Thereafter, he has been persistently criticising India’s efforts to tackle COVID-19. What Rahul does not realise is that his petty political attacks are hurting our image. Looking at the plight of these nations today, one wonders what he has to say now.

Thus far, over 100 million people have been affected globally. India accounts for 10 million cases, but has managed better control. It reported 13,044 new cases a day on January 30 after touching a high of 97,894 cases per day on September 14, 2020. The last four months have seen a steady decline in cases. Against this, the countries Rahul was praising are in a real mess.

Currently, the UK and France have two million and 2.7 mil-

lion active cases, respectively, as against 1.78 lakh in India.

The US has reported 25 million cases, of which nearly 10 million are active.

Strangely, even as the cases are declining, Rahul again attacked the Centre for its “failure” to tackle COVID-19.

The “unplanned lockdown” destroyed millions of lives, he says, but the truth is that India has one of the lowest death rates in the world during this pandemic. As against 10 million patients, India has reported 1.53 lakh deaths, accounting for around 1.5 per cent fatalities. Fortunately, most Chief Ministers are not toeing his line.

Meanwhile, the Independent Oversight and Advisory Committee for the WHO Health Emergencies Programme has submitted an interim report in which it has criticised “the rising politicisation of the pandemic response”, which means reckless attempts like the ones being made by Rahul are harming the cause.

The WHO panel has rightly observed that a successful response “hinges on inter-connected global systems and networks” and scientific expertise, and contends that the WHO can’t succeed without unified global political support during the next phases of the pandemic. It says the world is “at a critical juncture” and will “not defeat this virus without greater global solidarity and stronger multilateral cooperation”.

It is tragic that the leader of India’s oldest political party is consistently out to undermine the efforts of the Centre and all State Governments and lakhs of health workers, who have staked their lives to serve COVID patients. This is destructive politics at its worst. Fortunately, there are wiser men and women in his party, including Chief Ministers, who are not toeing his line and working selflessly to rid the country of this terrible scourge.

On Being a Good Neighbour ‘changes of lifestyle in youngsters’

“N

eighbours are more helpful than relatives” is a common phrase and it’s true. We all know that neighbours first come to our rescue ahead of our relatives and families in times of emergencies. The Bible explicitly emphasizes on the importance of being a good neighbour (Mat. 22:39). This is further exemplified by the story of the Good Samaritan, who made himself a good neighbour. Being a good neighbour helps us not just for the moment but it keeps us from building unhealthy images and relations in society.

The impasse between the Mao Community (MC) and the Southern Angamis (SA) over the years have taken a path of several extreme measures, where both sides have resorted to their own style and convenient way of dealing with the issue. There were unfortunate events that have spiked both the communities to feel indifferent to each other as two separate communities. This doesn’t mean that the two communities are at war, we share a good number of intermarriages between us and of course sharing of resources; for which we must try to resolve our differences by resorting to traditional methods in resolving conflicts.

It is unfortunate to be living in frontier like the MC, where inclusion and exclusion is part of everyday life. Nagas are scattered in several states like Arunachal,

Assam and Manipur , and also many in Myanmar.

The division of Nagas into states and nations are part of the British divide and rule policy. The present political demarcation of states is like imageries and we know that these boundaries were created without consulting the stakeholders.

The MC must not take advantage of living in the frontier and take sides in order to benefit momentary political recognition from the Manipur Government.

Developments like road construction in pretext of beautifying DzükouValley must be objected by MC. Rather, as guardians of our frontiers the MC must feel obliged to protect and guard activities of Manipur Government that could usher misunderstanding and enmity within Naga communities. But as far as developmental activities inDzükou and Kezo-l is concerned, MC has always sided with the Government of Manipur, which is seen as The SA must treat the Mao community, first as good neighbours, second, aspeoplesharing the same ancestral roots; and third as Nagas who are living in a violated frontier. This reality must be understood by every individual, young or old, by both the communities. The fact that when SA came to aid the MC during the crisis in Mao gate in 2010, the Manipur govt’ brought in force to barricade the MC loyalty towards the Naga leader (Th. Muivah) entry

into Somdal. The shelter though was initiated by the apex Naga civil society, a temporary camp was set up at Kisama for the displaced people (MC). This gesture was exhibited to show our solidarity in our brotherhood with MC and it must not be solely understood from a humanitarian perspective.

The SA must not look upon the vulnerability of the MC as a people who can be violated and trampled at any time because of their geographical location. The SA must not take advantage of the physical vulnerability and political disadvantage even if there are such circumstances created by the present State boundaries.

Traditional boundaries criss-crosses each other’s territory based on orality, and we know that we cannot assume ownership by disowning what lies beneath those practices. The land will not go anywhere, it neither belongs to the gov’t nor the state. It belongs to the people. Therefore, let us remain sensitive to the need of each other as good listeners, as cheerful caregivers, as defenders of violated frontiers and as members who are one in Christ. It is neither disciplined altruism nor sterile religion that makes people good neighbours, but loving God and forsaking self in the light of what God has done for us that will keep each other vibrant and strong.

Now a days, communication is through Social Media like Twitter, Facebook, email addresses, cell phones and Skype just to mention but a few. There are certain distinctions in household concept of older times and present times.

A young individual’s household should be the superior influence of their lives.

Parents of young people a hundred years ago comprehended this and did all they could do to make sure this happen. When we look at what is call household today, it is not what individuals hundred years ago would term as a family. Divorce was never known in communities those days and if there was a kid, a mother and father were present too. Youngsters were extremely keen to protect their siblings.

It was not possible for children to

have two mothers or fathers and had no choice between father and mother. Families today are prone to family violence, divorce cases and remarriages that make children have more than one mother or father. This has made youngsters today to ignore the concept of family values and can do whatever they wish at anytime. Discipline is extremely low in youngsters today as compared to young people year ago.

Life today is far away different with life lived years ago. Especially when young people are involved, the family structures and bondages of older times were strong but today they no longer have power.

Parents today do not have full authority or capacity to discipline their children.

This makes them ignore the values and principles governing families. In older times, communication was poor but today communication is extremely easy since technology has made the world a small entity. Life has really changed and things are not the same at all. The more changes are experienced, the more Youngsters life becomes hard.

People feel annoyed when it comes to social responsibility. People don’t care about the rules and laws established by the government.

I have encountered many times how people take so lightly about the corona virus these days. Majority of people don’t wear mask and no maintenance of social distance which show the carelessness of public and lack of social irresponsibility. And many drivers don’t follow the traffic rules without knowing the danger of their life and other people. Not only the mention from the above statement but many where people lack a numerous social responsibility, so I kindly request to spread awareness among the people establishing certain laws and regulation.

NIA begins probe into blast near Israeli Embassy in Delhi

New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has begun its probe into a blast near the Israeli Embassy here by re-registering the case filed by the Delhi Police, officials said on Wednesday.

The Home Ministry on Tuesday gave its nod to the anti-terror probe agency to carry out a detailed investigation into the explosion that took place on January 29 near the embassy located in the heart of Lutyens’ Delhi. No one was injured.

Some cars were damaged in the explosion that occurred about 150 metres away from the embassy on the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Road in the very high-security bungalow zone.

The Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was fabricated with cocktail of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil having cycle ball bearings as shrapnel. A letter was also received by the embassy which was shared with the police and now is part of the NIA investigation.

Praveen Sinha appointed acting CBI chief New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI): CBI Additional Director Praveen Sinha, a 1988-batch Gujarat cadre IPS, has been appointed acting chief of the agency till a decision on a new director is taken to succeed Rishi Kumar Shukla who retired on Wednesday after a two-year fixed stint.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi chose Sinha. An order issued by the Department of Personal and Training on Wednesday stated that Sinha will look duties of the director with immediate effect till the appointment of a new CBI chief or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Shukla, a 1983-batch IPS officer, completed his two-year stint in the agency which was marked by Indian victory in London courts allowing extradition of fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya and India clinching the hosting of General Assembly of Interpol in 2022, coinciding with the 75th year of Independence.

The Madhya Pradesh cadre, soft spoken officer allowed anyone with a griev-

ance in the agency to walk into his office on Fridays.

During his tenure, the agency caught some notorious paedophiles in the country who were running international racket of producing and selling child sexual abuse material on dark web.

Farm laws issue rocks Lok Sabha

Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned repeatedly on Wednesday as the protesting opposition members demanded a separate discussion on the farm laws issue.

As the House met at 4 PM, Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury tried to raise the issue of farmers’ agitation against the agri laws, saying the matter is harming the image of the country. “We are concerned,” he said.

Several opposition members trooped into the Well, protesting against the farm laws. Urging the members to return to their seats, Speaker Om Birla said they should maintain the dignity of the House or else he will have to take disciplinary action. He said the Question Hour is important and it should go on.

But the opposition members refused to relent, forcing him to adjourn the proceedings till 4.30 PM. The House reassembled thrice, only to again adjourn till 5 PM, then 7 PM and later till 9 PM as the opposition continued its protest despite repeated assurances by the Speaker that the members will get adequate opportunity to put forward their views.

When the House met at 4.30 PM, Chowdhury demanded a separate discussion on the Presidential address and the farmers’ issue.

Birla urged AAP leader Bhagwant Mann and others to go to their seats if they want a discussion.

But the opposition members did not pay heed to his requests, forcing him to adjourn the proceedings again till 5 PM.

its “incompetence is now coming to the fore”.

“They have messed up the economy, they have messed up the harmony, they have messed up the defence and they want to keep distracting India with non-events. I am saying that the country is in a dangerous position,” he alleged.

Noting that the world is in flux, he said an aggressive China is on the border with a clear vision of what it wants to achieve, while “we do not have” that vision.

Criticising the Union Budget, he said it was for one percent of the population and gave a wrong message to China as there was no significant rise in the defence allocation.

“It (conditions) requires that the prime minister put money immediately into the hands of our people and revive the economy, it requires that he protects the small and medium businesses who give us jobs...it requires a clear message to China that ‘you cannot do this with us, you cannot be sitting inside our land and expect that nothing is going to happen,” he said.

“There is just talk, there is no understanding, no strategy. What is there is a media that is controlled so the reality of what is going on is not coming out. This ‘maya’ is going to break.”

Gandhi argued that India needed money in the hands of the people, asserting that the economy can be revived only through consumption and it cannot happen from the supply side.

He also stated that had the government introduced a scheme like ‘Nyay’ by giving money into the hands of the poor and small businesses, the economy would have revived.

Govt orders Twitter to take down hastags suggesting farmer genocide

Mumbai, Feb 3 (PTI): A deputy commissioner of police (DCP) in Mumbai on Wednesday filed a criminal defamation complaint against Republic TV editorin-chief Arnab Goswami over the coverage of the Sushant Singh Rajput death case.

DCP Abhishek Trimukhe’s complaint before a sessions court here also named ARG Outlier Media Private Limited which owns Republic Media Network, and Goswami’s wife as she is one of its directors.

“There were some tweets which misrepresented Trimukhe. He had written about it to the Maharashtra government. The state home department gave its sanction (to file a complaint),” a senior police official said.

The complaint has been filed under Indian Penal Code sections 499, 500 (defamation) and 501 (printing or engraving matter known to be defamatory).

Goswami made “grossly false”, “malicious” and defamatory statements during the coverage of actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death by suicide last year, it claimed.

These defamator y statements were telecast on the channel Republic Bharat during a discussion about phone records of actor Rhea Chakraborty, Rajput’s girlfriend, it said.

New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI): The government on Wednesday ordered Twitter to immediately take down handles and hashtags that suggested a farmer genocide was being planned, saying such misinformation and inflammatory content will incite passion, and impact public order.

It warned Twitter of penal action in case of failure to comply with its directive.

In a strongly-worded notice to Twitter, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said it had on January 31 asked the micro-blogging site to block 257 URLs (web addresses) and one hashtag under the relevant provision of the law as they were “spreading misinformation about (farmer) protests and has the potential to lead to imminent violence affecting public order situation in the country.”

Twitter chose to sit over the request for one full day before blocking them, only to unblock them a few hours later.

This was not taken kindly by the government and a fresh order/notice has been issued to Twitter to comply, failing which penal action under sections that provide for fine and jail up to 7 years has been warned, sources with direct knowledge of the development said.

Section 69A of the Information Technology

Act gives the central government powers to direct an intermediary like Twitter to “block for access for the public any information generated, transmitted, received, stored or hosted” in any computer if it is “satisfied that the same is necessary or expedient in order to prevent incitement” of any offence, the notice said.

The accounts that were blocked - and then restored - included those of news magazine Caravan, Kisan Ekta Morcha, tribal leader Hansraj Meena, and actor Sushant Singh.

According to Twitter, it held meetings with government officials and conveyed that the accounts and posts in question constitute free speech and are newsworthy.

The company then “unwithheld” the accounts to protect public conversation. The other accounts that were initially withheld included those of CPM politician Mohd Salim, farm organisation BKU Ekta Ugrahan and Tractor2Twitter.

The move was criticised by politicians and civil rights activists.

On Twitter’s plea of such blocking impacting freedom of speech, the notice said Twitter has no constitutional, statutory or any legal basis to comment upon the interplay of statutory provisions with constitutional principles.

“The direction to block the hashtag ‘#ModiPlanningFarmerGenocide’ has

been found to be instigating people to commit cognizable offences in relation to public order and security of the state,” it said adding the impracticability or disproportionality of the said measure cannot be decided by an intermediary which is bound by the orders of the central government.

It sought banning of the hashtag accompanied by the content that is attached to it by the users using the same.

“Apart from the fact that the hashtag itself is provocative, the assertion of Twitter in its letter dated February 1, 2021, that stock phrases and exaggerations/ crude emotional appeals do not constitute inflammatory speech in light of the judgments of the Supreme Court, is meritless as the content attached to the said hashtag has been found to be directly falling afoul” to law, it said.

The ministry said a committee that reviewed the January 31 order and the reply by Twitter a day later, has confirmed the decision to block the said handles and hashtag.

“After the hearing was concluded on February 1 also the interim order continued to remain in operation despite which you chose not to comply with the mandate of law and the order passed by the competent authority legally endowed with the jurisdiction to pass the same.

Application in prescribed proforma are invited for 'Hinditar Bhashi Hindi Lekhak Puraskar' yojna of Central Hindi Directorate, Deptt. Of Higher Education, Ministry of Education for the year 2020. Under the scheme there is a provision of 19 awards of the value of Rs. One lakh each per year for the books originally written in Hindi on the subjects related to literature (Story, Poetry, Novel, Drama, Memoirs etc.) other than Literature (Regional Culture, Fine Arts, History, Science & Technology etc.) and Hindi translation of outstanding literary works of Indian Languages.

Eligibility:1. The mother tongue of the writer participating under this scheme must be any Indian language other than Hindi.

2. Writer has not been resided in the Hindi speaking state for the period of 15 years or more.

3. Book published during 2015 to 2019 containing at least 100 pages shall be considered for award.

4. Manuscript are not acceptable.

5. Writers once awarded under this scheme shall not be considered.

6. Book awarded by Central Govt./Any State Govt./ Undertaking or any Commercial Institution shall not be considered.

7. Official of Central Hindi Directorate or their dependents can-not participate in this scheme.

8. Anyone (individual, institutions or publisher) can submit the book on behalf of writer: for the consideration.

9. During the evaluation usage of standardized Devanagri script and Hindi Spellings prepared by CHD would also be taken in consideration.

10. Five copies of the book must be submitted with duly filled proforma. Book will not be returned.

11. The portion of the book displaying the name of the author and that 'of the publisher should be removed from three out of 5 copies of the book and must be rebinded. The remaining 2 copies should be sent as they are.

‘India’s reputation has taken massive hit’ New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi “to do his job” of protecting farmers and claimed India’s reputation has taken a “massive hit” with its soft power being “shattered” by the ruling BJP with its handling of the agitation against the new agri laws.

The Congress leader, however, refused to comment on some international celebrities, including American singer Rihanna, extending support to the farmers’ protest, saying “this is our internal matter”.

Addressing a press conference, he said that the farmers’ issue needs to be resolved by the government as soon as possible as delaying it further was not good for the peace and harmony in the country.

Training his guns at Prime Minister Modi, he claimed there is no leadership in the country at present.

Asked if India’s image at the international level has taken a beating over reports of the treatment being meted out to the protesting farmers at Delhi’s borders, Gandhi said, “Absolutely, the reputation of India has taken a massive hit. Not only on how we are treating our farmers but on how we treat our people, how we treat journalists.”

“Our biggest strength, you can call it soft power, has been shattered by the BJP-RSS, their mindset,” he said.

Referring to the multilayered barricading and roadblocks at protest sites, the former Congress chief asked why the national capital was being converted into a “fortress” and asserted that farmers work hard for the country and

The MoU was inked at Aero India 2021, the country's premier defence and aerospace show, which began here on Wednesday.

WUHAN, FEB 3 (AP): World Health Organisation investigators on Wednesday visited a research centre in the Chinese city of Wuhan that has been the subject of speculation about the origins of the coronavirus, with one member saying they’d intended to meet key staff and press them on critical issues.

The WHO team’s visit to the Wuhan Institute of Virology was a highlight of their mission to gather data and search for clues as to where the virus originated and how it spread.

“We’re looking forward to meeting with all the key people here and asking all the important questions that need to be asked,” zoologist and team member Peter Daszak said, according to footage run by Japanese broadcaster TBS. Reporters followed the team to the high security facility, but as with past visits, there was little direct ac-

cess to team members, who have given scant details of their discussions and visits thus far. Uniformed and plainclothes security guards stood watch along the facility’s gated front entrance, but there was no sign of the protective suits team members had donned Tuesday during a visit to an animal disease research center. It wasn’t clear what protective gear was worn inside the institute.

The team left after around three hours without speaking to waiting journalists.

Following two weeks in quarantine, the WHO team that includes experts in veterinary medicine, virology, food safety and epidemiology from 10 nations has over the past six days visited hospitals, research institutes and a traditional wet market linked to many of the first cases. Their visit followed months of negotiations as China seeks to retain tight

control over information about the outbreak and the investigation into its origins, in what some have seen as an attempt to avoid blame for any missteps in its early response.

One of China’s top virus research labs, the Wuhan Institute of Virology built an archive of genetic information about bat coronaviruses after the 2003 outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. That has led to unproven allegations that it may have a link to the original outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan in late 2019.

China has strongly denied that possibility and has promoted also unproven theories that the virus may have originated elsewhere or even been brought into the country from overseas with imports of frozen seafood tainted with the virus, a notion roundly rejected by international scientists and agencies.

ty director is Shi Zhengli, a virologist who worked with Daszak to track down the origins of SARS that originated in China and led to the 2003 outbreak.

She has published widely in academic journalists and worked to debunk theories espoused by the former Trump administration and other American officials that the virus is either a bioweapon or a “lab leak” from the institute.

Confirmation of the origins of the virus is likely to take years. Pinning down an outbreak’s animal reservoir typically requires exhaustive research, including taking animal samples, genetic analysis and epidemiological studies. One possibility is that a wildlife poacher might have passed the virus to traders who carried it to Wuhan.

The first clusters of COVID-19 were detected in Wuhan in late 2019, eventually prompting the government to put the city of 11 million under a strict 76-day lockdown. China has since reported more than 89,000 cases and 4,600 deaths, with new cases largely concentrated in its northeast and local lockdowns and travel restrictions being imposed to contain the outbreaks.

Islamabad, Feb 3 (PTI): Pakistan began its countrywide coronavirus vaccination programme on Wednesday, with the first jabs administered simultaneously in all four provinces, a day after Prime Minister Imran Khan launched the immunisation drive in capital Islamabad.

As per the schedule, frontline health workers are being vaccinated first, followed by the elderly citizens and then the rest.

The drive began after half a million doses of vaccines were donated by China on Monday.

The nationwide campaign is being held in major cities of all provinces and Pakistan occupied-Kashmir. At the vaccination launch, Planning Minister Asad Umar, who is also the chair of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), said the simultaneous inauguration reflected a united national effort. He praised the health workers for risking their lives to save the people.

Advisor on Health Dr Faisal Sultan, on the occasion, said China’s Sinopharm has proved its effectiveness.

SAN FRANCISCO, FEB 3 (IANS): In a surprise development, Jeff Bezos who made Amazon one of the most dominant tech firms in the world has announced to step down from his role as CEO and move to a new position as executive chair of the Board in the third quarter (Q3) this year.

Andy Jassy, who is the CEO of the company’s profit-making Cloud arm Amazon Web Services (AWS), will replace Bezos.

The news came as Amazon registered its largest quarter by revenue of all time at $125.56 billion, as online shopping broke all records in the holiday December quarter amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Being the CEO of Amazon is a deep responsibility, and it’s consuming.

When you have a responsibility like that, it’s hard to put attention on anything else,” Bezos said late on Tuesday.

“When you look at our financial results, what you’re actually seeing are the long-run cumulative results of invention. Right now, I see Amazon at its most inventive ever, making it an optimal time for

For industry analysts, the transition came as a surprise as many in retail did not expect this to happen so quickly.

US in touch with India, Japan on coup in Myanmar WASHINGTON, FEB 3 (PTI): Terming the detention of Myanmar’s top civilian leaders by the military “a coup”, a senior State Department official has said that the US is in constant touch with regional allies like India and Japan on the latest developments in Nay Pyi Taw as the two countries have better contact with the military in the Southeast Asian nation.

The United States categorically said the military action in Burma is a coup.

“After a careful review of the facts and circumstances, we have assessed that Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of Burma’s ruling party, and Win Myint, the duly elected head of government, were deposed in a military coup on February 1,” the State Department official said.

“At the same time, it will continue programmes that benefit the people of Burma directly, including humanitarian assistance and democracy support programmes that benefit civil society,” the official said. The US is providing nearly USD 135 million in bilateral assistance to Burma in the financial year 2020.

Now, a small portion of that is expected to fall under sanctions.

The return to civilian rule in 2015 had enabled Myanmar to engage with countries and businesses across the globe and move beyond relying on actors in the region that do not respect human rights and democratic institutions.

“The military’s actions over the last week, and frankly prior to that, have put that progress at grave

risk. A very small circle of Burma’s military leaders have chosen their own interests over the will and well-being of the people,” the official said.

The Biden administration, the official said, rejects any attempt by the military to alter the outcome of the November 2020 election in Burma. “And, as President Biden has said, we will take action against those responsible, including through a careful review of our current sanctions posture as it relates to Burma’s military leaders and companies associated with them. China has participated in the consultation. China is a friendly neighbour to Myanmar,” Wang said. “We hope all sides in Myanmar can take into account national interest and people’s interest to uphold political and social stability,” he said.

Researchers say until now it has not been possible to explore the impact of early exposure to air pollution on thinking skills in later life because of a lack of data on air pollution levels before the 1990s when routine monitoring began.

For this study, the team used a model called the EMEP4UK atmospheric chemistry transport model to determine pollution levels -- known as historical fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations -- for the years 1935, 1950, 1970, 1980, and 1990.

arents, take note. If your child is exposed to air pollution, they may have a decline in thinking skills in later life, a study suggests.

The study indicates that greater exposure to air pollution at the very start of life was associated with a detrimental effect on people’s cognitive skills up to 60 years later.

“For the first time we have shown the effect that exposure to air pollution very early in life could have on the brain many decades later,” said co-author Tom Russ from the University of Edinburgh.

“This is the first step towards understanding the harmful effects of air pollution on the brain and could help reduce the risk of dementia for future generations,” Russ added.

The tournament adopted Maradona’s name just days after the 1986 World Cup winner’s death from a heart attack in November, reports Xinhua news agency.

However, Argentine football officials decided to revert to the tournament’s original name for fear of future lawsuits for the use of Maradona’s name and image. According to lawyer Martin Apolo, image and naming rights form one of the “most important assets” in Maradona’s inheritance.

Argentine media reports have estimated Maradona’s estate to be worth between $75 million and $100 million. The decision to drop Maradona’s name comes less than a month after Banfield won the inaugural edition of the Maradona Cup by beating Boca Juniors in the final.

We can ask for more funds if needed, says Kiren Rijiju after Budget cut NEW DELHI, FEB 3 (PTI): Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday said he is open to asking for more funds from the government if needed in an Olympic year, insisting that the budget allocated to his ministry for 2021-22 is satisfactory despite the cut.

Rijiju said all requirements of athletes heading into Tokyo Olympics are being met.

The central government on Monday allocated Rs 2596.14 crore for sports -- a reduction of Rs 230.78 crore when compared to the amount earmarked initially for the previous year, that was derailed by the COVID19 pandemic across the world. “...if needed, there is a provision for asking for revised allocation. We can ask for it,” Rijiju said on the sidelines of the launch of Fit India office at the Jawahar Lal Nehru stadium here.

In the last financial year, the government had allocated Rs 2826.92 crore for sports, which was later revised to Rs 1800.15 crore because of the lack of activity caused by the pandemic.

This year’s allocated amount is Rs 795.99 crore

“We give money to the players through federations.

We provide support to state governments. We just come as a supplementary to their need,” he added.

The sports ministry bears the cost of all foreign training and competition, including participation in the Olympics.

T h e g ove r n m e n t ’s flagship Khelo India programme was handed the biggest reduction -- of Rs 232.71 crore -- among all sports heads for the 202122 budget, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday.

During Wednesday’s event, Sports Secretary Ravi Mittal said, “If you look at the budget of 2021-22 as against 2019-2020, there is an increase of 19.13 per cent....we should compare it with previous year. Ajay Singh NEW DELHI, FEB 3 (PTI): The postponed Asian Boxing Championship, which India is scheduled to host, will be organised in either April or May this year, Boxing Federation of India President Ajay Singh revealed on Wednesday after being re-elected to the post at the body’s Annual General Meeting.

The championship was to be originally held in November-December last year but was postponed owing to the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Asian Championship will either be held in April or May,” Singh said in a press conference after the AGM at a Gurugram hotel.

India last hosted the men’s Asian meet back in 1980 in Mumbai before conducting the women’s event in 2003 in Hisar.

The tournament became a combined event for men and women last year.

The COVID-19 pandemic threw sporting calendars haywire around the world with several big events, including the Olympics and the T20 World Cup of cricket, postponed.

Asked whether the national championships would be held after the pandemic did not allow the event to go ahead in 2020, Singh said, “It is work in progress.”

So far, nine Indian boxers -- five men and four women -- have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics and Singh said they will get enough exposure to ensure their preparations remain on track.

“They trained in Italy last year for two months and then they will also compete in the world qualifiers in June. There will be no shortage of competition for them,” Singh said.

Mumbai fightback to beat Kerala Blasters 2-1

The away side turned the game around thanks to a howler between Alessandro Bastoni and Samir Handanovic in the 35th minute, when Ronaldo was alert to pounce on Bastoni to intercept the ball, rounding an on-rushing Handanovic and placing an angled drive into the net.
