Guwahati, Feb 27 (IA NS): The government was “steadily but clearly” moving towards a less regressive taxation system and removing the criminal angles which are unwanted in every Act dealing with tax issues, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Thursday.
“Eventually, we hope to have in India a simplified taxation structure, completely reduced rates of taxation, and therefore an easy-to-comply system. So as regards taxation we went in that route.

“Now, if you notice, as we are talking of removing or reducing the personal income tax, we removed the dividend Distribution Tax totally. So every time we are taking a step towards simplifying, we are removing that which is seen as a double taxation, or a regressive taxation,” Sitharaman said during an interaction with traders and industry representatives here on the Union Budget 2020-21.
The Finance Minister, who was accompanied by Finance Secretary Rajeev Kumar, DEA Secretary Atanu Chakraborty, Revenue Secretary A.B. Pandey and SBI Chairman Rajnish Kumar, said it was a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reform-mindedness when dealing with businesses.
“We are steadily but clearly moving towards less regressive system.”
Responding to queries from the businesspeople, she said it was also the government’s clear cut policy to remove elements which introduce the criminality angle to even a civil omission or commission as regards business laws.
“So I think even within the first six months of the present tenure, we have, in one or two Acts, very clearly diluted the criminality angle and in some cases clearly removed them also.
“Even as we speak, there is work going on to look at the Companies Act to see what are the provisions in which criminalisation is coming up and we are trying to remove them. We are looking at every act to see where this has become so pronounced in terms of bringing the criminalisation. We will remove the criminal angle in everyone of these Acts which are unwanted,” she said.
Sitharaman directed the top Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs officers in Assam to meet people including businesspersons and other tax holders between 4-6 p.m. on every working day till March 15 and clear their doubts on taxation issues.
“You send us a comprehensive report by March 20 in which you should mention the queries which you could not reply. The higher officials in Delhi will respond,” she said.
On the budget announcement of developing Sivasagar in Assam as one of the five archaeological sites to be developed as iconic sites with onsite museum, Sitharaman said she would work closely with the state’s Sarbananda Sonowal government and ensure the project was designed and taken up the way the state wanted it. Rupee settles 6 paise higher at 71.59 Mumbai, Feb 27 (PTI ): The Indian rupee finished 6 paise higher at 71.59 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday amid easing crude oil prices and weakening of the greenback overseas.
Forex traders said the rupee consolidated in a narrow range as gains were restricted by sustained foreign fund outflows and robust selling in domestic equities.
Moreover, market participants will be keeping an eye on third quarter GDP growth number scheduled to be released on Friday. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local currency opened at 71.65 to the US dollar. During the day, it swung between a high of 71.55 and a low of 71.69. The domestic unit finally finished at 71.59, up 6 paise from its previous close.
Meanwhile, investor sentiment remained fragile amid concerns over the coronavirus outbreak turning into a pandemic, traders said. The death toll from the virus epidemic now stands at 2,744 in mainland China and there are now nearly 81,000 cases in total. “Rupee consolidated in a narrow range but traded with a slightly negative bias against the US dollar ahead of the preliminary GDP number that will be released from the US later this evening,” said Gaurang Somaiyaa, Forex & Bullion Analyst, Motilal Oswal Financial Services. “According to the company, increase in mobile call and data rates will help it generate revenue to the same level as Vodafone and Idea individually generated in 2015-16. The company has said that it will take three years to get to that level after tariff hike hence it has sought three-year moratorium for payment of AGR dues,” the source said.

Geneva/Washing ton, Feb 27 (PTI / IANS ): The UN human rights chief on Thursday voiced “great concern” over India’s amended citizenship law and reports of “police inaction” in the face of communal attacks in Delhi, urging political leaders to prevent violence. Updating the ongoing 43rd Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva on human rights developments around the world, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet also spoke about the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
She said the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) adopted last year by India’s Parliament was of “great concern”.
“Indians in huge numbers, and from all communities, have expressed - in a mostly peaceful manner - their opposition to the Act, and support for the country’s long tradition of secularism,” she said.
“I am concerned by reports of police inaction in the face of attacks against Muslims by other groups, as well as previous reports of excessive use of force by police against peaceful protesters.
“This has now widened into broader intercommunal attacks, with 34 people killed since Sunday. I appeal to all political leaders to prevent violence,” said the former Chilean president.
The communal violence over the amended citizenship law in northeast Delhi has claimed 34 lives so far and left over 200 people injured. Frenzied mobs have torched houses, shops, vehicles, a petrol pump and pelted stones at police personnel.
Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said on Thursday that law enforcement agencies were working on the ground to prevent violence and ensure restoration of confidence and normalcy.
“Senior representatives of the government have been involved in that process. The prime minister has publicly appealed for peace and brotherhood. Security personnel patrol streets following clashes over the new citizenship law, in Yamuna Vihar area of northeast Delhi, Thursday. (PTI)

We would urge that irresponsible comments are not made at this sensitive time,” Kumar said.
In her statement on Jammu and Kashmir, Bachelet said some political leaders had been released and ordinary life may be returning to normal in some respects in the region.
She, however, said as many as 800 people were reportedly in detention, including political leaders and activists.
“Schools, businesses and livelihoods have been disrupted by the continued heavy military presence, and no steps have been taken to address allegations of excessive use of force and other serious human rights violations by security forces,” she said.
“The Indian government has partially restored mobile and internet services, after an important decision by the Indian Supreme Court, but authorities continue to impose excessive restrictions on the use of social media,” she said in her statement. Protests in 4 US cities against Delhi violence Protests have been planned in the four US cities of Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco and New York on Friday against the violence in New Delhi that has so far claimed 33 lives, a media report said.
The protests have been organised by a group named South Asian Students Against Fascism under the banner of “Emergency! Stop State Sanctioned Violence in India”, the American Bazaar said in the report on Wednesday.
Participants will gather in front of Indian Consulates in the four cities.
The organising group calls itself a movement of South Asian students who are together in the fight against fascism, religious intolerance and polarization. Violence er upted between pro- and antiCitizenship Amendment Act groups in areas like Jaffrabad, Maujpur and Gokulpuri in northeast Delhi on Sunday.
Beijing , Feb 27 (IANS ): As the overall coronavirus toll in China increased to 2,744 with 78,497 confirmed cases, a Chinese health expert on Thursday said that the coronavirus outbreak would be “basically under control” in the country by the end of April.
“Although there was a large outbreak in Wuhan (epidemic’s epicentre), we did not see massive outbreaks in other cities,” the South China Morning Post newspaper quoted Zhong Nanshan, China’s top respiratory disease expert, as saying.
“We predicted earlier that the peak should take place in mid or late February, due to the strong intervention by the state and the cancellation of travel peaks after Chinese New Year Holiday.
“It turned out the number of cases began to drop after February 15. Our forecast was similar to some other foreign authoritative experts, and we are confident that the epidemic would be basically under control in April,” the expert added.
On Thursday, China’s National Health Commission said that it received reports of 433 new confirmed cases and 29 deaths on Wednesday from 31 provincial-level regions on the mainland.
Among the deaths, 26 were in Hubei province, and one each in Beijing, Heilongjiang and Henan.
The Commission added that 2,358 people were still suspected of being infected with the virus, while a total of 32,495 have been discharged from hospital after recovery.
As of Thursday morning, the number of highest confirmed cases outside China were reported in South Korea (1,595), Japan (894, including 705 on Diamond Princess), Italy (447), Iram (139), Singapore (93), Hong Kong (91), the US (60), Thailand (40), Bahrain (33), Taiwan (31), Australia (23), Malaysia (22), Germany (24), France (18), Kuwait (18), Vietnam (16), the UK (13), the UAE (13), Canada (12), Spain (12), Macau (10), Iraq (five).
The deaths outside China were recorded in Iran (19), South Korea (13), Italy (12), Japan (seven), Hong Kong (two), France (one), Taiwan (one) and the Philippines (one). China COVID-19 toll: 2,744

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT London, Feb 27 (IANS ): The UK government is set to publish its strategy for post-Brexit trade talks on Thursday, as it prepares for formal negotiations with the European Union (EU).
The gover nment’s strategy will be put online and presented in Parliament, said the BBC in a report.
The UK strategy was agreed on Monday by the EU Exit Strategy (XS) committee, which includes new Chancellor Rishi Sunak, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, senior cabinet minister Michael Gove and new Attorney General Suella Braverman.
All members of the committee supported Brexit during the 2016 referendum.
The UK officially left the EU on January 31, but is continuing to abide by many of the bloc’s rules while talks on a permanent trading relationship take place.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has pledged to get a deal with the EU by the end of the transition period - December 31, 2020 - and has said he was not prepared to extend that deadline.
Negotiations are due to begin in Brussels on March 2.
The UK’s team will be led by Johnson’s Europe adviser David Frost. The chief negotiator of the Brexit withdrawal agreement, UK govt to unveil post-Brexit trade talks goals with the European Union Dhaka, Feb 27 (PTI ): Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday told her party leaders that the mosquito, despite being a small insect, is quite powerful and they should not allow it to take a toll on their popularity among voters.
Speaking at the oathtaking ceremony for the newly-elected mayors and councillors of Dhaka, Hasina told them to find ways to keep the mosquito menace in check, bdnews24 news website reported.
“You must make sure the mosquito menace does not take a toll on your popularity and reduce the number of votes. Despite being a small insect, the mosquito is quite powerful,” she said.
Hasina asked the public representatives to ensure equal services for all citizens and alleviate their sufferings by controlling the mosquito menace. “Sometimes you confront multiple problems at the same time. Right now, we’re facing the risks of coronavirus; dengue was another problem just days ago. We need to destroy the mosquito breeding grounds,” she said.
Last year, Bangladesh faced its worst-ever dengue fever outbreak as hospitals were flooded with patients, putting a severe strain on the country’s already overwhelmed medical system. Dhaka, an overcrowded megacity that was the epicenter of the outbreak, struggled to contain the mosquito-borne viral infection, drawing criticism and spreading panic among some residents.
Dengue is found in tropical areas around the world and is spread by a type of mosquito that mainly lives in urban areas.
The virus causes severe flu-like symptoms and while there is no specific treatment for the illness, medical care to maintain a person’s fluid levels is seen as critical. Mosquito quite powerful, don’t let it eat into votes: Sheikh Hasina Sheikh Hasina Boris Johnson (File) Michel Barnier, will head up the EU’s delegation.
Both Frost and Johnson have said in recent weeks they want to seek a Canada-style agreement with zero tariffs from the EU, the BBC reported.
Barnier has rejected such a deal, saying the UK is not like Canada, and its geographical proximity would threaten competition between EU states.

No Time To Die looks set to be the longest James Bond film in the franchise’s history.
The long-awaited 25th instalment of Bond is due for release on April 2, and will be Daniel Craig’s final outing as the iconic spy.
As further details surrounding the plot continue to emerge, it now appears that the upcoming dose of 007 will offer us more Bond than ever before.
According to a listing from US cinema chain Regal, No Time To Die will clock in at a total runtime of 163 minutes (2 hours 43 minutes).
This means – if accurate – that the new film will beat the record currently held by Spectre, which is 2 hours and 40 minutes long overall.
No Time To Die will pick up five years after the events of the last movie, introducing a retired James Bond who is enjoying a quiet new life in Jamaica.
Yesterday, a behindthe-scenes video feature was shared online offering an insight into the film from director Cary Joji Fukunaga. The filmmaker described No Time To Die as “a culmination of all that Bond has become. It’s all that he’s seen, all the trauma, the loss.”
The film’s official synopsis reads: “In No Time To Die, Bond has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help.
“The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.”
Meanwhile, Billie Eilish has shared her highly-anticipated theme for the 25th James Bond film. Following its release, she performed the song at this month’s BRIT Awards ceremony.
(NME) ‘No Time To Die’ set to be longest James Bond film yet “E verything will be remembered, Everything recorded”, Pink Floyd cofounder and legendary musician Roger Waters said recently as he read out Delhi student Aamir Aziz’s poem at a protest here and described the Citizenship (Amendment) Act as “fascist” and “racist”.
The 76-year-old singerlyricist was participating in a protest last week to demand the release of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, who has been in jail in the UK since April 2019.
A video from the protest showing Waters reciting the English version of Aziz’s popular poem “Sab Yaad Rakha Jayega” has been circulating widely on Twitter and other social media platforms.
“This is a young man none of us know, his name is Aamir Aziz. He is a young poet and activist in Delhi. He is involved in the fight against Modi and his fascist, racist citizenship law. I will read a little bit from one of his poems,” the musician said, endorsing the anti-CAA protests and criticising the Indian Prime Minister.
“Kill us, we will become ghosts, And write of your killings, with all the evidence; You write jokes in court, We will write ‘justice’ on the walls; We will speak so loudly that even the deaf will hear, We will write so clearly that even the blind will read; “You write injustice on earth, We will write revolution in the sky; Everything will be remembered, Everything recorded,” he recited from the poem.
He also said “this kid” has got a future.
Waters received a resounding thumbs up from Indian Twitter users, including celebrities such as composer Vishal Dadlani and actor Richa Chadha.
“Roger Waters of #PinkFloyd reads a translation of Aamir Aziz’ poem “Sab Yaad Rakha Jaayega”, in solidarity with anti-CAA protestors. The world is watching Delhi, amitshahofficial and @narendramodi. The world is...” wrote Dadlani.
(PTI) Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters recites Delhi student Aziz’s anti-CAA poem in London S teven Spielberg will no longer direct the forthcoming Indiana Jones movie and will instead remain as a “hands-on” producer.
That’s according to sources who told Variety the franchise’s longstanding director will hand the reins to another filmmaker to breathe new life into the fifth installment. The decision, a source close to Spielberg said, was entirely the director’s own. A deal hasn’t closed, however Ford v Ferrari director James Mangold is reportedly in talks to take over from Spielberg.
Mangold had a similar experience when he was enlisted for the Wolverine franchise, helping 2017’s Logan gross $619 million globally. The writer/director also got an Oscar nod for best adapted screenplay.
Indiana Jones 5 has had many setbacks. Disney first announced it in 2016, with Spielberg directing and Harrison Ford reprising the iconic titular role he’s played since 1981.
The film was originally slated for a July, 19 2019 release. That was then pushed back to July 10, 2020 and delayed again to July 9, 2021. The latest postponement was due to Jonathan Kasdan (son of Raiders of the Lost Ark writer Lawrence Kasdan) coming on board to handle the script after screenwriter David Koepp left the project.
Ford, meanwhile, remains on the project. During an interview with CBS Sunday Morning this month he said that he was “going to start doing ‘Indiana Jones’ in about two months”, and then days later told HeyUGuys that the project is still facing “scheduling issues and a few script things” and that “we’re determined to get it right before we get it made.” (NME) Spielberg pulls out from directing ‘Indiana Jones 5’
Extreme’s long-awaited new album is ‘pretty much done’
During an appearance on this past Tuesday’s (February 25) episode of “Trunk Nation: L.A. Invasion” on SiriusXM, Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt confirmed that the band is putting the finishing touches on its first new album since 2008’s “Saudades De Rock”. “It’s done in a sense where it’s done,” he said about the new LP. “As a matter of fact, Gary [Cherone, vocals] flies back in tomorrow, into L.A. He’s doing a few touch-ups — some stuff that we did, a few fixes; stuff we changed, lyrics we changed in the songs. But that’s it. He’s doing the final touch-ups. All the guitars, bass, drums are done. Mixes are pretty much done.”
As for a possible arrival date for the new album, Nuno said: “The release is really gonna depend on a label. The good thing about not releasing anything for a while is we’re free and clear of, I think, anything that we had, which we’re really excited about because I haven’t been this excited about an album in a long, long time. It’s probably one of the hungriest-sounding EXTREME albums I’ve ever done. It’s heavy and it’s full of fire. I would say that this is even probably Gary’s best album he’s done. This is his album, I would say.”
Asked why it took Extreme 12 years to release a follow-up to “Saudades De Rock”, Nuno said: “To be honest with you, we didn’t wait that long. We probably have about three to four albums done. Not ‘done done,’ but we did an album pretty quickly.
“One thing I always said to Gary, ever since we started this band, is I never wanna release anything that I can’t wait to play people, that I just can’t wait to share,” he continued. “I don’t wanna put out albums just for the sake of putting out albums. I loved the stuff we were doing, but then I started writing some other stuff that I liked better. And then we kind of scrapped that. Then I latched on to something where we thought we had an album done about two years ago, and then I just tapped into these three or four songs. It was a ‘stop the presses’ kind of moment for me, and I went, ‘That’s it.’ It reminded me of when we kind of tapped into [1990’s] ‘Pornograffitti’ back then, to me, where it was a big kind of uppercut. Gary refers to this album as ‘Porno 2.0’ every time he jokes about it, but it’s very much like that kind of excitement for us.”

According to various online retailers, the new Deep Purple album will be titled “Whoosh!” and will be released on June 12 via earMUSIC. The legendary rockers’ 21st studio LP was once again helmed by Canadian producer Bob Ezrin (Kiss, Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper), who also worked on Deep Purple’s last two studio albums, 2017’s “Infinite” and 2013’s “Now What?!”
Deep Purple will promote “Whoosh!”’s release by embarking on a five-date U.K. tour in October with special guests Blue Öyster Cult.
Last fall, Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover told the Chicago Sun-Times that he and his bandmates planned to keep recording new music.
“We’ve been working a bit,” he revealed. “There’s a few things around, we don’t know yet what’s, where, or when, but we’ve not stopped yet.
“There’s a danger, of course, if you’ve become successful, that people want you to do the same thing and be successful all over again and keep going, but it doesn’t work that way,” he added. “You can’t just simply repeat yourself.”
Having released six albums since 1996, Glover said everyone in Purple has been committed to keeping things fresh.
“I think that there was almost an unspoken desire to move forward, to not repeat ourselves,” he explained. “Of course, the players are the same, so the sounds can be the same in all the style or something like that. But as far as writing songs are concerned, I think most bands don’t get the songs right. They talk about performance and hooks and stuff like that, but to me writing a song is much more than that. And we’ve always tried to write different songs. The danger is, of course, you become a parody of yourself if you try and copy yourself. And so, we’ve always tried to move on and change. It’s a challenge.”
Deep Purple — which had been eligible for induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame for two decades — finally entered the Rock Hall as part of the class of 2016. The band’s first three lineups were inducted, including drummer Ian Paice, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, late keyboardist Jon Lord, and various singers and bassists — Rod Evans; Ian Gillan and Glover; and David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes.

Cape Town, Feb 27 (IAN S): Australia rode on brilliant performances from the openers as well as spinners to overhaul South Africa in the third and final T20I of the three-match series. David Warner and Aaron Finch combined for a 120-run opening stand before Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar returned combined figures of 5/26 from seven overs to seal a 97-run victory at the Newlands Cricket Ground on Wednesday.
Put in to bat, Warner and Finch got Australia off to a flying start, scoring nine fours and two sixes within the first six overs. By the end of 10 overs, the visitors had scored 114 and both batsmen were still unbeaten having reached their half centuries. However, within a span of three runs, both Warner (57) and Finch (55) were sent back to the pavilion, thus putting brakes on the scoring rate. Steve Smith then provided Aussies with the finishing touch as he scored 30 off just 15 balls to help the visitors post 193/5.
The Proteas didn’t have a good start to their chase as Quinton de Kock was bowled by Mitchell Starc off the third ball of the innings. And the hosts fell further behind the game as Zampa announced himself in the game, holding on to a spiralling outside edge from Faf du Plessis to leave the hosts two down in only the third over.
The leg-spinner played a role in the next three wickets as well, bowling Heinrich Klaasen and Pite van Biljon either side of another fantastic piece of fielding, anticipating Rassie van der Dussen’s scoop shot and coming round from short third-man to take a diving catch.
David Miller and Dwaine Pretorius then fell in the space of three balls and thus ended any realistic hopes left for the home side.
Ashton Agar dismissed Nortje and Ngidi with consecutive deliveries, and although Shamsi managed to keep out the hat-trick ball, next over it was all over when Rabada was pinned leg-before by Starc, who finished with figures of 3/22. The hosts were ultimately bowled out for 96 runs in 15.3 overs.
Starc was adjudged the Player of the Match while skipper Finch was declared the Player of the Series. The two teams will now take on each other in the three-match ODI series opener on Saturday. Brief Scores: Australia 193/5 (David Warner 57, Aaron Finch 55; Tabraiz Shamsi 1/25); South Africa 96 all out (Rassie van der Dussen 24, Heinrich Klaasen 22; Mitchell Starc 3/22) Australia celebrate winning the T20 series against South Africa at Newlands Cricket stadium in Cape Town, South Africa. Lyon, Feb 27 (IANS): Olympique Lyon held Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus without a shot on target to defeat the mighty Italian side 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League knockout stage tie.
Lyon, who last got this far in the competition 10 years ago, on Wednesday became the first French club to beat the Bianconeri in a decade and the first side of any nationality since 2004- 2005 to deny Juve a shot on target in a Champions League contest, reports Efe news.
The night also saw fivetime Ballon d’Or Ronaldo’s scoring streak end after 11 matches.
Currently seventh in Ligue 1, Lyon are widely seen as the weakest of the 16 teams in the knockout stage and have been poor at home.
E v e n s o , P a r c Olympique Lyonnais was packed to the rafters with 55,000-plus, including some 3,000 Juventus traveling supporters, and the home fans were rewarded with one of the squad’s best performances of the campaign.
Lyon coach Rudi Garcia deployed his men in a 3-5-2, with newcomer Bruno Guimaraes making his Champions League debut as the fifth midfielder.
Garcia’s bet turned out to be the right one. Besides taking the sting out of the high-powered Juve attack, Lyon mounted a threat of their own under the leadership of Houssem Aouar.
Aside from a Ronaldo effort in the 4th minute that was deflected away from goal, the initiative on offense belonged to Lyon, who signaled their intentions with a thunderous header by Karl Toko-Ekambi that rang off the cross-bar near the midpoint of the first half.
Minutes later, Lyon defender Maxwel Cornet had to intervene to clear a dangerous cross from Ronaldo with goalkeeper Anthony Lopes out of position.
The decisive moment came at the half-hour mark as four players collided going up for a ball. Juve defender Matthiijs de Ligt was left bleeding from his head and had to leave the pitch for treatment.
During his absence, Aouar pressed into the area and fed the ball to Lucas Tousart, who beat Juventus keeper Wojciech Szczesny from close to put hosts up 1-0. The question heading into the second half was whether Lyon could maintain their level against a team with vastly more experience in European play.
Juventus made inroads, but posed no real threat to Lopes. With 30 minutes left, visiting coach Mauricio Sarri turned to his bench.
He replaced Miralem Pjanic with Aaron Ramsey and the Bianconeri were more dynamic with the Welshman in midfield.
Paulo Dybala looked poised to equalize for the visitors when Alex Sandro’s brilliant cross reached him in the box, yet the strike went wide.
Sarri played his two remaining cards: pulling Juan Cuadrado in favour of Gonzalo Higuain up front and subbing in Federico Bernardeschi for Adrien Rabiot in midfield.
Higuain misfired on a great opportunity and Dybala’s apparent equalizer was disallowed for an offside and the referee turned a deaf ear to Ronaldo’s plea for a penalty. New Del hi, Feb 27 (PTI): Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday said he expects this year’s Tokyo Olympics to go ahead smoothly despite fears being expressed over the fate of the Games amid the novel coronavirus threat.
The Olympic Games are scheduled to be held in July-August this year but a senior IOC member Dick Pound has said that the event might have to be cancelled if the deadly coronavirus outbreak is not brought under control by May.
“Virus China mein hai, Tokyo mein Nahi (the virus is in China not Tokyo),” Rijiju said in response to questions about the Games on the sidelines of a workshop to sensitise Indian athletes about Japanese etiquette and culture here.
Rijiju said the current situation demands that nations come together to fight the crisis.
“We have to fight every situation together. I expect Tokyo Olympics to start July 24 on time and go ahead smoothly,” he said. “World is a community, we have to support each other,” he added.
The coronavir us, which was first detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan, has so far claimed over 2,000 lives.
According to media reports, more than 180 people in Japan have contracted the virus and three have died because of it.
The Tokyo organisers have repeatedly asserted that there is no threat to the Games at this point.
Talking about India’s preparations for the Olympics, Rijiju said none of the logistical mistakes made in Rio 2016 would be allowed to repeat.
“There were some management issues in 2016 but we will ensure none of it happens again. It is important to ensure mental well being of the athletes,” he said, without going into the specifics. Gabriel Jesus scored an equalizer in the 78th minute and Kevin De Bruyne netted an 83rd-minute winner from the penalty spot as Man City came from behind for a 2-1 win over Madrid in the first leg of the last 16 at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Wednesday.
Francisco “Isco” Alarcon opened the scoring in the 60th for Madrid, which played the final minutes without defender Sergio Ramos after he was shown a straight red card for a foul to stop an 86th-minute breakaway by Jesus.
The return match in England will be on March 17.
Guardiola’s side was the most dangerous team throughout the match but couldn’t get past Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois until Jesus’ close-range header. The Brazilian forward jumped behind Ramos to meet a well-placed cross by De Bruyne.
Raheem Sterling made a crucial impact after coming off the bench by setting up the penalty that De Bruyne calmly converted past Courtois.
Madrid struggled to get clear chances but took the lead after Rodri gave the ball away near midfield. The blunder allowed Vinicius Junior to make a run into the area and find Isco free from markers for an easy goal.
Courtois made a few difficult saves in both halves, while Madrid’s best chance until Isco’s goal was a close-range header by Karim Benzema that was saved by Ederson before the break. Man City rally to beat Real Madrid

Acap ul co, Feb 27 (Agencies ): World No 2 Rafael Nadal stepped up his bid for a third ATP Mexico Open title with an impressive display of serving and shot making to beat Serbian youngster Miomir Kecmanovic on Wednesday.
The Spaniard hit 20 winners as he kept his hopes alive of regaining the top ranking with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over the 20-year-old Kecmanovic to reach the quarterfinals at the Acapulco hardcourt tournament.
“He’s a very dangerous player. Young, with a lot of power. I’m very pleased with the victory,” Nadal said.
“I played a very good first set and that’s important for me. That gives me confidence.”

In a letter to Raninder Singh, President of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), the Korea Shooting Federation pointed that while the organising committee had on February 12 assured it of allowing the South Korean shooters to participate, it wants further clarity in light of a travel advisory put out by India on February 26.
“Currently, most of the Korean athletes are wishing to acquire MQS at the ISSF World Cup -- New Delhi. However, there is a great deal of concern and worry among athletes and officials that they might not be able to participate. Furthermore, we have completed the payment of flight tickets and visa issuance fee,” said Korea Shooting Federation Secretary General Yongjae Lee in the letter. “We hope to get a direction from the federation and the Organising Committee as soon as possible. Kindly state your position regarding the COVID-19.” Efforts to get in touch with the NRAI President failed as Singh couldn’t be reached on phone.
The Union Health Ministry had on Wednesday issued a new travel advisory cautioning Indians against non-essential travel to South Korea, Iran and Italy. The advisory came in view of deaths being reported in these countries from coronavirus.
It also states that people coming from these three countries or having such travel history since February 10, are to be quarantined for 14 days on arrival to India. The NRAI chief had said on Wednesday that China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and North Korea have pulled out of the World Cup due to the crisis in their countries caused by the disease. Spurs’ Alli faces ban for coronavirus post and took it down. I let myself down and the club,” Alli said in a post on Chinese social media platform Weibo.

Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva was handed just a one-match suspension and a £50,000 fine for a Twitter post comparing teammate Benjamin Mendy to a cartoon earlier this season.
Alli has until March 5 to respond to the FA.
Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho believes Alli’s remorse should mean he escapes a suspension.
“I feel that [a ban] would be unnecessary, but in relation to these decisions, I am nobody,” said Mourinho earlier this month.

Mel bourne, Feb 27 (PTI): Shafali Verma’s 34-ball 46 followed by a superlative performance from the bowlers helped India notch up a narrow four-run win over New Zealand in a crucial group A match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup here on Thursday.
Invited to bat, India posted a below-par 133 for eight against New Zealand in the crucial group A match with Shafali topscoring with a 34-ball 46 and Taniya Bhatia chipping in with a 25-ball 23. India, however, produced a disciplined performance with the ball to restrict New Zealand to 129 for six and register their third successive win in the tournament.
With this win, India topped Group A, having beaten Australia and Bangladesh in their last two outing.

The Old Trafford side are fifth in the Premier League, three points behind Chelsea, who occupy the fourth and final berth for Europe’s elite club competition. United host Club Brugge later on Thursday in the second leg of their Europa League last 32 tie, which is locked at 1-1.
“In a cup competition you never know ... you cannot predict, you can’t rely on, ‘we’ll win this.’ There are good teams in it,” Solskjaer told a news conference.”
“It might be a bad day, you meet someone ... so we just take one game at a time, hopefully take as many points as we can in the league.”

But experienced pacer Shikha Pandey removed Priest in the next over when she had her caught at mid wicket.
With Shikha and leftarm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad bowling in tandem, New Zealand played with caution to reach 28 for one. Back into the attack, Deepti then cleaned up Bates with a beauty of a delivery as New Zealand slipped to 30 for two.
Poonam Yadav and Radha Yadav then mounted the pressure on the Kiwis and soon the Black Caps were 34 for 3 when the former dismissed skipper Sophie Devine (14). Maddy Green (24) and Katey Martin (25) then tried to resurrect the innings with a 36-ball 43- run stand.
However, Gayakwad returned to remove Green, who danced down the pitch only to end up with an outside edge as Bhatia did the rest.
Radha then dismissed Martin to leave New Zealand at 90 for 5 in 16.3 overs.
Needing 44 off 21 balls, Kerr (34) blasted four boundaries to accumulate 18 runs in the penultimate over bowled by Poonam to bring the equation down to 16 off six balls.
In the final over, Heyley Jensen (11) and Kerr cracked a four each but Shikha held her nerves in the end to complete the win.
Earlier, 16-year-old Shafali provided the fireworks as India scored 49 for one in the powerplay overs. But they lost six wickets for 43 runs to squander the good start.
Smriti Mandhana (11), who returned to the playing XI after missing the last match due to illness, departed early but Shafali and Taniya (23) kept the scoreboard ticking, adding 51 runs for the second wicket.
In the 10th over, Taniya was caught by Amelia Kerr at backward point, while Jemimah Rodrigues (10) was caught by Kerr in the 12th over as India slipped to 80 for 3.
Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur’s (1) poor form also continued as she was soon back to the hut after being caught and bowled by Leigh Kasperek.
Shafali, who was dropped at long-on in the 8th over and at mid-wicket in the 10th over, then holed out to Jensen at deep extra cover. She had four hits to the fence and three maximum shots in her innings. Left-handed batter Deepti Sharma (8) and Veda Krishnamurthy (6) brought up the 100 in the 15th over but both departed soon as India slumped to 104 for 6.
Radha Yadav then blasted 14 off nine balls, which included a six in the final over, to give some respectability to the total. Brief Score: India women: 133 for 8 in 20 overs (Shafali Verma 46; Amelia Kerr 2/21). New Zealand women: 129 for six in 20 overs (Amelia Kerr 34 not out; Shikha Pandey 1/21).
