unrest: Students, teachers to hold Ibobi inciting communal tension: Shürho DU counter-rallies after ‘Tiranga march’

DIMAPUR, FEB 27 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu on Monday accused his Manipur counterpart, O. Ibobi Singh, of inciting communal tensions in Manipur, “so that the valley people back him during elections.” “He is more communal than his political party,” alleged Dr. Liezietsu while speaking at the launching of the NPF election rally at Senapati Monday morning, CMO medial cell stated. Dr. Liezietsu in this regard called upon the Meiteis not to fall prey to Ibobi’s designs and also urged upon “scholars and intellectuals to come out and speak the truth.” If the truth is spoken, peace and harmony will come to the land, he said. Dr. Liezietsu reminded that Meiteis and the hill tribes of Manipur had been maintaining good neighbourly relations since time immemorial and would continue to do so even in the future. Noting that the Meiteis and the hill tribes of Manipur had no other homeland except the ones they presently occupy, Dr. Liezietsu said they have no option but to remain

“It is for this reason that the NPF hopes to provide a single platform to all the legislators from the hill districts so that they can speak in one voice and one mind in the Assembly,” he said. On Naga political issue, Dr. Liezietsu said “any problem that is to be solved peacefully through dialogue should not be construed as going against any community,” and assured that his party stood by its motto Fide Non Armis (By Faith, Not by Arms). He told the gathering that, even as some Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu speaking at the election rally. UP polls: Nearly 57.36% turnout in fifth phase

Centre readies Rs 195 cr scheme to check obscene content online

LU CK N OW, F E B 2 7 (AGENCIES): An estimated 57.36 per cent of 1.81 crore electorate on Monday cast their votes amid tight security during the fifth phase of polling in Uttar Pradesh. The day-long poll process remained largely peaceful in 51 Assembly constituencies spread over 11 districts of the state. “57.36 per cent polling was recorded till 5 PM and the figure is likely to go up as several voters waited in queues to exercise their franchise,” UP Chief Electoral Officer T Venkatesh said. The first four phases of UP polls this time saw voter turnouts of 64 per cent, 65 per cent, 61.16 per cent and 61 per cent respectively. Though the exercise remained slow during the first two hours in morning, it picked up pace gradually with first-time voters seen exercising their franchise quite enthusiastically. Prominent contestants in the phase included controversial minister Gayatri Prasad Prajapati from the ruling SP, who is facing Amita Singh from Congress and BJP’s Garima Singh in Amethi, the LS constituency of Rahul Gandhi.

NEW DELHI, FEB 27 (AGENCIES): In a reply to a Supreme Court observation on ‘how can the Internet Service Providers stop uploading obscene content on the internet’, counsel for Google on Monday stated that the Centre has a scheme with “Rs 195.30 crore allotted which will have senior officers as experts monitoring the cybercrime issue”. The apex court is hearing arguments in the case which pertains to the “loss of dignity for women and children due to the objectionable content uploaded online”. The counsel for the respondents (Google) submitted that a new affidavit has been filed by the Centre in the case which talks about the salient features of cybercrime and how a Rs 195-crore scheme with experts has been devised to look into the issue.

In an earlier round of hearing, a bench of Justices MB Lokur and UU Lalit had sought information from Google about its “in-house procedure” adopted to identify such obscene content and “what steps can they take to prevent it”. However, senior counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who was representing Google India, expressed regret in not being able to prevent such acts unless reported by an individual. This case has opened up the possibility of whether artificial intelligence can play a key role in the automatic deletion of objectionable content uploaded online. But on Monday, Google submitted that there are algorithms which govern the search engine’s operation and it is impossible to keep a check on it as the “system is automated and since there is no

human interface”. “To put a human interface in this automated system will skew the system as it will depend on a person to allow or disallow any content,” submitted Google India. This bench had earlier asked the search giant “will it or will not it be conducive to prevent the uploading of such contents” and also had said that what the apex court is “looking for is prevention and not cure, when it comes to comes to pornographic content online”. But on Monday, Google said that in a day, a billion videos are uploaded and “out of which may be 20 videos are of child pornography”. However, it also said that “there is a provision that can stop the serial offenders who have footprints of patterns”. The matter has now been adjourned to March 6.

DIMAPUR, FEB 27 (NPN): Residents of Peren town’s Mdipuiram and Beilikui wards have imposed indefinite road blocked to protest against the alleged “non-competition of road” by the contractor. In a joint press release, Mdipuiram ward youth president Nduzeu and Beilikui ward youth organization, president Paukuleu said the residents necessitated the youths of the two wards to indefinitely block the under construction road as the contractor failed to respond to their “fervent appeal”

they could speak to the UNC to lift the blockade. Rather, it was made known to them that the “blockade was Ibobi’s creation and it depends on him whether it could be lifted or not,” he said. “Dividing the people on communal lines and appealing to a section of the people for political gains is not advisable,” Zeliang said. Lamenting that the Naga political issue was yet to be resolved, Zeliang said there were “some political elements who do not want the problem to be solved because they think that once the Naga problem is solved, their political careers would come to an end.” Also speaking at the rally was Nagaland minister and NPF Manipur in-charge, Yitachu who made clarion call to the hills people to elect NPF candidates in the forthcoming general elections so that the MLAs would be able protect their people. “Only NPF party can fulfil the aspirations of the people of the Hills districts and electing the NPF candidates can fulfil your aspirations of fully implementing the provisions of the Constitution of India as contained in Article 371 C,” he said.

for black-topping the road. The signatories said the residents had appealed the responsible contractor several times, but turned a deaf ear to their plea. They said that the “callous attitude” of the contractor prompted the residents block the road. Affirming that the blockade would continue till the contractor commenced the works, the signatories warned that the contractor would be held responsible in case any unwanted events arose.

Campuses in Delhi are set to witnesses several marches and counter-marches in Tuesday, with the Leftwing All India Students’ Association, Congress-backed National Students Union of India and teachers from Jawaharlal Nehru University set to register their protest over the recent Ramjas violence. The rallies follow the ABVP’s Tiranga march, which was held on Monday. NSUI would be organising a symbolic oneday hunger strike at the arts faculty, followed by a ‘Mashaal’ rally. “While we stand against the ABVP strongly in their attempts to curb students’ freedom of expression and misusing ‘nationalism’ to further their agenda, we also condemn the violent ways of the Left in handling of the situation,” a statement by NSUI said. Students and teachers of DU and JNU, along with AISA members, will stage a march from Khalsa college

in the North Campus to the arts faculty against the calling off a street play competition following “threats” from the DU Students’ Union. Kaur on Monday was provided protection from Delhi Commission of Women home guards. Ramjas campus saw large-scale violence after the ABVP objected to a seminar at the college where JNU students Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid were invited. This led to a violent clash with ABVP members being accused of beating up students, professors and media persons. The Delhi Crime Branch has opened and investigation into the case. Home Minister Rajnath Singh today ordered the Delhi Police to act with caution with the force coming under allegations of high-handedness.

Karbi bodies oppose KAAC polls Correspondent

Diphu, Feb 27: Ten Karbi Anglong civil society organizations including students’ bodies have decided that it would not allow government to conduct Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) election until positive rules and act have been framed. “Until and unless the authorities fail to prepare its rules and Acts, we will not allow holding elections to the council,” the organisations stated. However, the organizations opposing election did not specify exactly what rule and act they wanted to change. Rong Asar (NNKRA) supported by Karbi Students Youth Council (KSYC), Kuki National Assembly (KNA), United Hills Development Organization (UHDO) also questioned Das how he can declare the schedule of election in an area governed under the provision of Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India. “Ranjit Das is a mere party Member of Legislative Assembly and Pradesh BJP president. He is not the authority to announce the poll schedule for KAAC,” they stated. The organizations, have also opposed the move of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council to allot 500 bighas of land to Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali for setting up herbal medicinal hub at Bakalia. They affirmed that not a single inch of land would be granted to Patanjali. KAAC authority had allocated land for Langpi Hydro Electric Project, Assam Rifles and Indian Reserve Battalion, Cement Corporation of India but the local people of Karbi Anglong have not been benefited from these arrangements, it added.

BJP victory imminent in Manipur: Johnny Rengma

Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, FEB 27 (NPN): Returning after one week of extensive campaigning in Manipur tribal belts, Bhar tiya Janata Party’s national vice-president for ST Morcha, Johnny G Re n g m a o n M o n d ay exuded confidence that BJP would win the Manipur elections with absolute majority. Rengma, who was addressing media persons in Dimapur Monday, said: “I am confident that BJP will form the next government in Manipur with absolute majority,” and added BJP would usher in an era of peace and prosperity in the state once it comes to power. While drawing comparison with election excesses in Nagaland t o t h a t o f M a n i p u r, Rengma said Nagaland Baptist Churches Council (NBCC) Clean Election Campaign should not only benefit Nagaland but it should too in Manipur. Rengma also added that EPIC cards were distributed to all voters

in Manipur, suggesting that the election process of Manipur was much cleaner and thorough than Nagaland. He was of the opinion that the clean election process in Manipur was unlike Nagaland and that the candidates in fray don’t have to spend much. “There were no mess (food/feast) in the election rallies,” he cited as an example. Asked about Naga Pe o p l e s Fr o n t p a r t y, which is in alliance with BJP in Nagaland and is also contesting 15 seats i n M a n i p u r, Re n g m a maintained “NPF party should remain a good and people friendly party in Nagaland.” He opined that NPF had “antagonised and created” more divisions among the tribals (as non-Naga tribals also inhabit those areas) and went on to add that NPF cannot solve the Naga political problem in Manipur. Tribal community, according to him, were smart enough and therefore BJP will win almost all the tribal

reserved seats including some that are not reserved for tribals. “NSCN (I-M) should understand the BJP-led government of India engagement with them to resolve the Naga political issue and refrain their involvement with certain political parties in the Manipur elections especially in the tribal areas,” he also stated. H e f u r t h e r maintained that with the installation of Bhartiya Janata Party government in Manipur would foster better relationship with Nagaland and Manipur not just at government level but people to people also. In his opinion, change of government in Manipur was a foregone conclusion as “the wind of the BJP wave has cleared the doubts of the Manipur electorate.” M e a n w h i l e, h e informed that the BJP was fighting alone in Manipur without any form of alliance thereby reiterating his earlier stand that BJP will win by majority votes.

Academia row: Cong, Chidambaram slams Jaitley

P Chidambaram separatists and the ultra-Left are speaking the same language in certain university campuses. So, they must be willing to allow others with a different opinion to put a counter viewpoint.” Ja i t l e y ’s c o m m e n t comes days after violent clashes outside Delhi University’s Ramjas college between activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad - the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s students wing - and the leftwing All India Students Association (AISA) on February 22. Tewari also said Jaitley’s remarks reflect the deep-seated fear in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that there is an instinctive alliance of subversion coming together. “That instinctive alliance of subversion is predicated on undermining the fascist principle, which is intrinsic to the BJP. That is the alliance which challenges their intolerance and

their right to dominate the discourse which is making the government paranoid,” he said. “The violence which took place in Ramjas College is absolutely abhorrent. What is more shocking, is the attempts made by senior members of the government to justify the violence. “Nobody holds the brief for the Balkanistaion of India or supports those who advocate the secession of India. Right to freedom of expression includes the right to offend and those offended have recourse to the law, if the reasonable restrictions are in any manner transgressed,” Tewari added. Accusing the Modi government of joining forces with the Sangh Parivar to unleash assaults on Indian democracy, the Congress leader also said the assault on students and teachers by ABVP activists at Ramjas College was part of a concerted effort by right-wing forces. “The incident (at Ramjas) is not isolated. Ever since this government came to power, attempts have been on to adjust the discourse 90 degrees to the right. “There is this pattern of intimidation and violence going across the country which challenges the fundamental precept on which the Constitution of India rests, the idea on which the country has been founded.

Arun Jaitley blames ‘alliance of subversion’ for campus violence

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has blamed an “alliance of subversion” for university campus violence and argued that the separatists and the ultraLeft were speaking the same language in certain campuses. The Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs made the remarks while responding to students from the South Asia Centre of the London School of Economics (LSE), who asked him about his stand on the clas-

sification of the term “antinational” and the clashes between AISA and ABVP supporters in Ramjas College of the Delhi University earlier this week. “A n y i d e a w h i c h thinks in terms of disintegration of (the) country, is something I abhor. Within the framework of upholding the sovereignty of (the) country, we can ideologically differ but free speech does not permit you to assault the sovereignty of the country,” Jaitley said yesterday.

2 MONTHS CRASH COACHING FOR DP-1678

NEW DELHI, FEB 27 (AGENCIES): US Navy veteran Adam W Purinton, who shot dead IndianAmerican Srinivas Kuchibhotla and injured Alok Madasani at a Kansas bar last week, had asked their visa status before shooting them besides enquiring if the duo were staying in the USA as illegal migrants, reflecting the mindset of a section of American population whose ‘concerns’ have been outlined by the current administration in Washington. Purinton, during the fateful night at the bar in Oalthe, Kansas, had initially asked Madasani and his colleague Kuchibhotla their visa status, say persons familiar with the episode. The ex-navy personnel also asked the duo if they were staying in America as “illegal migrants”, a close associate of Madasani, who has now been released from the hospital, told ET from USA. Purinton had suspected the duo to be “middle-easterners”. The Indian duo did not respond to Purinton’s provocation. Instead, Madasani, an engineer who works for Garmin International, reported the initial incident to a bar manager, resulting in the Purinton being thrown out of the bar. But the Navy veteran later came back to the bar to shoot the duo. The shooting happened within weeks of president Donald Trump’s declaration of strict action against illegal migrants and proposed stricter rules for legal migrants including Indian professionals under H-1B visa category. Indian establishment, however, is of opinion that changes in H-1B visa category will require Congressional action and this is a time-consuming matter. Foreign secretary S Jaishankar, who is visiting USA this week, his third trip to America since November 8 election results, will voice concerns over security of Indian Americans as well as drive home the point of Indian professionals’ contribution to the local economy. The issue of contribution of Indian nationals in America was raised by the PM who met US Congressmen in Delhi last week.

“Therefore, time has come for all progressive, pluralistic and patriotic forces to come together and fight this relentless assault on the Indian democracy by elements of the Sangh Parivar (that) has complete and absolute backing of the government right up to the Prime Minister,” said Tewari. “This is indicative by the kind of people the Prime Minister has chosen to follow on his Twitter handle.” Earlier, Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien had said that Modi was following on Twitter certain trolls who write “venomous, misogynist” stuff besides issuing “murderous threats”. New Delhi/London, Feb 27 (IANS): The Congress on Monday demanded that Finance Minister Arun Jaitley apologise for “insulting” the Indian academia for his remark at the London School of Economics (LSE) that “there is an alliance of subversion on Indian campuses”, in reference to last week’s violence at Ramjas College. Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram too hit out at Jaitley. “When Mr. Jaitley was president of DUSU in 1975, was he heading an ‘Alliance of Subversion’?” - he asked sarcastically on Twitter. “The Finance Minister went to London. At LSE, he said ‘there is an alliance of subversion across university campuses in India’. Thus spoke the Finance Minister in the erstwhile capital of Imperial Britain,” said Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari at a media conference here. “He has insulted the academia of India, insulted its students, teachers and the other members of the fraternity. He (Jaitley) should apologise for the language he has used against Indian academia and that too on foreign soil,” he added. That is the alliance which challenges their intolerance and

leveling allegations on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “In a press conference the CM said that the PM while addressing rallies should point out the works he has done for the development. I want to tell him (CM) that he must have knowledge of the functioning of federal structure in a democracy. In federal structure over 80% development works are done through states, and he should not forget that for the first time UP was given 42% central revenue, which earlier used to be 32%”, he said adding that there is a long list of works done by the BJP-led central government that included LPG connections under Ujjwala Yojana, availability of cardiac stents at controlled

price, over 9 lakh power connections in 1464 villages, over three crore banks accounts under PM Jan Dhan Yojna, benefits under Mudra Yojna, Atal Pension Yojna, construction of eight modern highways of 865km in length at the cost of Rs. 6218 crore. Mocking at Akhilesh for highlighting metro rail, he said, “Lucknow Metro ki bahut charcha ho rahi hai. One should know that 80% contribution to metro rail projects comes from Centre”. He further said that the central government worked for the revival of closed urea factory at Gorakhpur. “Political analysts world over appreciate the good governance of BJP, which has emerged as a credible political party.

Dissent agreeable, not disintegration of India: Naidu New Delhi, Feb 27 (IANS): Asserting that nobody had the right to support Indias disintegration and Kashmirs independence, Union Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Monday accused leftist forces in the country of trying to turn universities into “laboratories for separatists experiments”. In the wake of the February 22 violence involving ABVP and All India Students Association supporters at the Ramjas College here snowballing into a major political controversy, the BJP leader slammed the opposition, particularly the Congress, for alleging assault on the freedom of speech and expression. “Dissent is agreeable, but not disintegration. Nobody can advocate disintegration (of India). What

does ‘azadi’ (independence) of Kashmir mean? Thousands of people have laid down their lives for the unity and integrity of the country,” Naidu told the media here. “Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India; how can anybody advocate ‘azadi’ for Kashmir? They want to make universities the laboratories for separatists’ experiments,” he said. Without taking names, Naidu blamed the leftists

for what he said was trying to create trouble in higher education institutions. “Actually, they are frustrated because a majority of the people have rejected their ideology -- they have been rejected both ideologically and politically. Frustrated, they are now trying to mislead young minds by such arguments. “There are more than 7,000 institutions (in India) and there is total peace. But they (leftists) are trying to create trouble in a few by raking up casteist, communal or separatist issues,” the minister claimed. Naidu also targeted the Congress for blaming the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre for the Ramjas incident that left over a dozen people, including teachers and journalists, injured.

Replying a query on the arrest of two suspected ISIS men on Sunday in Gujarat, he said that the ISIS would fail to influence Indian youth, as the people are alert and supportive to the government. “In fact the parents of some misguided youths contacted me and informed about their concerns,” he said adding that the government is keeping eyes on them. It’s worth mentioning Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad arrested two ISIS suspects, who were allegedly planning to carry out serial blasts in Gujarat, from Rajkot and Bhavnagar on Sunday Targeting UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, Singh said that the CM should think seriously before

Lu c k n ow, F eb 2 7 (IANS): Millions voted on Monday in the fifth phase of the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls spread across 51 constituencies in 11 districts, officials said. An estimated 60 per cent of the 1.8 crore electorate exercised their franchise between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. in the country’s most populous state, the Election Commission said. Barring minor incidents of violence and technical problems in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), the balloting concluded peacefully, the poll panel said. Amethi and Sultanpur saw healthy voting, with more than 60 per cent of the electorate voting. One official said the voting percentage was set to surpass the turnout of 2012.

SEOUL/KUALA LUMPUR, FEB 27 (AGENCIES): Two North Korean ministries orchestrated the plot to kill Kim Jong-nam on the orders of Pyongyang’s leader Kim Jong-un, South Korea’s spy agency said on Monday. The National Intelligence Service (NIS) said four of the eight suspects behind the murder worked for Pyongyang’s Ministry of State Security, with two others being from the Foreign Ministry, Yonhap reported. “The assassination of Kim Jong-nam was an act of systematic terror ordered by Kim Jong-un,” South Korean lawmaker Kim Byung-kee said in a televised address. “The operation was conducted with two assassination groups and one supporting group.” The half-brother of

Philippine Islamists behead German hostage MANILA, FEB 27 (AFP): Islamic militants in the Philippines have beheaded the German hostage they were holding for ransom, the SITE Intelligence group said today. A video posted by the extremist Abu Sayyaf group, which was monitored by SITE, showed German hostage Jurgen Kantner being killed by a knife-wielding man. The video appeared to confirm preliminary reports received by Philippine government officials that the mercenary group had slain Kantner. The Abu Sayyaf, blamed for the worst terror attacks in Philippine history, had previously demanded a ransom of 30 million pesos (USD 600,000) by Sunday to spare the 70-year-old. Government envoy Jesus Dureza, who was negotiating for Kantner’s life, told AFP he had heard of the video, adding that it confirmed earlier reports that Kantner had been killed.

the stands in the hopes of seeing a Marseille side buoyed by fresh investment and the return of Dimitri Payet derail their old rival’s title charge. But the vociferous home fans were silenced after just six minutes when

skipper Thiago Silva rose to powerfully nod the ball back across goal and fellow Brazilian defender Marquinhos headed home unchallenged. That opened the floodgates and Blaise Matuidi, who scored the fifth and best goal of the evening, was jubilant afterwards. Marseille were never in the game but Payet had the home side’s first real chance when he flashed a longdistance strike just wide on the quarter hour. A minute later however it was 2-0 when the Argentine attacking midfielder Javier Pastore -- recalled after injury at the expense of Julian Draxler -- cleverly dinked the ball through to Cavani, who poked in past the advancing Yohann Pele in the home goal to continue his deadly form. It was the Uruguayan predator’s 35th goal in all competitions this term and 26th in the league. Cavani might have had

Dubai win sends Svitolina to career high 10th

PA R I S, F e b 2 7 (Agencies): Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina hit a career high world ranking after her victory in Dubai helped her crack the WTA top 10 released on Monday. The 22-year-old moved up three places to 10 after beating former world number one Caroline Wozniacki in Saturday’s final. Denmark’s Wozniacki moved up one place to 14th. Serena Williams remains on top of the rankings but less that 500 points ahead of Angelique Kerber, who could have gone top had she won in Dubai but lost to Svitolina in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Marseille winner Jo-Wilfried Tsonga returned to the world’s top 10 in ATP rankings. The 31year-old Frenchman won his third title on the south coast of France. Tsonga moved up four places to seventh, his highest ranking since June last year. Pouille also gained two places to move up to 15th while Austria’s Dominic Thiem dropped one spot to ninth despite winning the title in Rio de Janeiro. Andy Murray held onto the world number one ranking ahead of Novak Djokovic, with neither of them in action last week.

a second on 23 minutes as PSG dominated, but he miscued his scissor kick over with the goal gaping. The second half was more of the same and it was 3-0 on 50 minutes when another Brazilian, Lucas Moura, profited from poor defending to prod in from close range. Matuidi claimed the assist but it was Pastore, back in boss Unai Emery’s starting XI and back to fitness, who provided a classy touch on the way. Emery replaced Pastore with Draxler early in the second half and just after the hour the German international schemer made it 4-0, firing in first time after a pinpoint Thomas Meunier cross. Marseille grabbed a 70th-minute consolation through Rod Fanni, before Matuidi sealed the rout, steering the ball into the top corner from just outside the box. The heavy defeat leaves Marseille in seventh.

Manchester United lift EFL Cup

Manchester United players celebrate winning the EFL Cup against Southampton at Wembley.

Lo n d o n, F e b 2 7 (Agencies): A late Zlatan Ibrahimovic goal helped Manchester United claim the EFL Cup with a 3-2 win over an impressive Southampton at Wembley. Just as it looked like the game was edging towards extra-time, the former PSG striker leaped highest in the 87th minute and powered home his header from close-range to register his 26th goal of the season, and claim United’s fifth League Cup. Claude Puel’s side will feel undone after putting in a monumental performance, but can take heart in the fact they pushed the Red Devils all the way and were unfortunate not to have at least brought the game to

extra-time. Indeed, It was the big Swede who opened the scoring in 19th minute after the 35-year-old’s free-kick found the bottom corner for his 25th goal in all competitions this season, although questions will be asked of Fraser Forster whose positioning was poor at best. Southampton looked dangerous in the final third, but the Saints found themselves two goals behind after Jesse Lingard guided his effort from outside the area, finding the bottom right-hand corner. Southampton were wrongly denied the opener in the tenth minute after Manilo Gabbiadini converted from close-range,

but the Italian deservedly pulled one back for the Saints just before the halftime when he put his effort through the legs of David De Gea. The equalising goal revitalished Southampton and Gabbiadini found the net again four minutes into the restart with a wonderful instinctive finish on the half-turn, which left De Gea flat-footed. After pulling level, the Saints grew in confidence and came within centimeters of taking the lead when former Chelsea man Oriol Romeu’s headed attempt crashed off the crossbar, leaving De Gea helpless. The win sees Jose Mourinho become the

first Manchester United manager to win silverware in his first season at the club, equalling Liverpool’s record of 41 major trophies. Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was more willing to credit Ibrahimovic for the win. “ H o n e s t l y , Ibrahimovic won the game for us because he was outstanding. I can see a couple of performances, Pogba being at a similar level, but he was outstanding. In a match where the opponent was better than us for long periods, they deserved to go to extra time, he made the difference and he gave us the cup,” the 54-year-old Portuguese said.

India’s Jitu-Heena win mixed event for 10m air pistol

India’s Heena Sidhu and Jitu Rai with silver and bronze medal winners after winning mixed team 10m Air Pistol event of the ISSF World Cup in New Delhi on Monday. (PTI)

New Delhi, Feb 27 (PTI): There was some cheer for India after two barren days as the duo of Jitu Rai and Heena Sidhu triumphed in the 10m mixed team air pistol event of the ISSF World Cup here today. However, since the mixed event is being used on a trial basis in line with IOC’s aim to achieve gender equality in its 2020 Tokyo Olympics program, medals are not being awarded even though the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) executive committee has ratified the recommendations. The mixed event got its start with the 10m air rifle event at the World Cup on Saturday with China winning the gold medal over Japan. In an event, where coordination plays a key role, Rai teamed up with Heena to finish ahead of Japan’s Yukari Konishi and Tomoyuki Matsuda

5-3. Slovenia’s Naphaswan Yangpaiboon and Kevin Venta were placed third. They were trailing in the semifinal stage but staged a spirited fightback to enter the gold medal match and eventually won the ‘golden badge’. “It was good, very interesting, opinions are still divided since it is early days. It will take time to settle down. But we will have to start preparing for this in earnest as this, we assume, is going to be part of the Olympics and World Championships,” Heena, a former world number one, said after the event. The recommendations to include mixed gender event was given by the Abhinav Bindra-led ISSF Athletes Committee and the world governing body soon approved the proposal.

India will come back hard, warns Smith NWA, referee board

Steven Smith

P UNE , F e b 2 7 (Agencies): Having turned the tables on India in spectacular fashion in the first Test, Australian captain Steven Smith believes his team can get better and has set his eyes on winning a series in the subcontinent after a gap of more than 12 years.

“I wouldn’t say it was perfect. We did a lot of things right in this Test, that’s for sure. But there are still areas that we can improve on,” said Smith. The last time the Aussies won a series in India was in 2004-05. Smith, a cricket with a keen sense of history, didn’t

need a reminder. “Coming to India, we haven’t won a game here in 4,502 days,” the visiting skipper said, referring to their victory in Nagpur on a green-tinged track at the VCA ground. Smith has his eyes firmly set on replicating the success of the side led by Ricky Ponting. “But it’s going to be a tough road, we know India are going to come back incredibly hard. They’re an amazing team particularly in their own backyard. And we’ve got to be ready for it.” I t ’s a r e m a r k a b l e turnaround for Australia and Smith personally after he flew back home midway through the ODI series in Sri Lanka in August last year.

Sofia, Feb 27 (IANS): Mohamed Hussamuddin went down fighting in the final of the men’s b a n t a m we i g h t ( 5 6 k g ) category as India finished with three medals at the 68th Strandja Memorial boxing tournament here. Hussamuddin put up a spirited fight against 2013 European Championship silver medallist Mykola Butsenko of Ukraine before going down 2-3 to settle for the silver late on Sunday evening. Among other Indians in the fray, Amit Phangal lost in the semi-finals of the men’s Light Flyweight (49kg) division and Meena Kumari Maisnam went

down in the last four stage of the women’s 54kg class to settle for the bronze. A total of 15 Indian boxers -- 10 men and five women -- took part in the event. Meanwhile, China won two gold medals during Sunday’s finals. Yin Junhua, silver medallist at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, defeated European champion Denitsa Eliseeva of Bulgaria 5-0 in the final of the women’s 60kg class here on Sunday evening, reports Xinhua news agency. Rio 2016 bronze medallist Li Qian won the women’s 75kg category by beating Rio silver medallist

Babos wins Hungarian Ladies Open Real Madrid rally past Villarreal in La Liga

Timea Babos (L) and runner-up Lucie Safarova (R) with retired professional tennis player Monica Seles after their final match at the Hungarian Ladies Open tournament.

Bu dap e s t, F e b 2 7 ( A g e n c i e s ) : To p seed Timea Babos won her second WTA title in style, beating No. 2 seed Lucie Safarova 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-3 to win the inaugural Hungarian Ladies Open championship in front of an enthusiastic home crowd at Budapest. “I’m really, really happy,” the 23-year-old Hungarian said after the match. “It’s an unbelievable feeling and an incredible

moment for my career that I could play against Lucie. She’s an amazing player and it was a big fight and it’s unbelievable that I could come out with a win in front of my home crowd.” Both women were playing their first finals of the season. Safarova, a French Open finalist in 2015 from the Czech Republic, overcame a slow start and an early break in the first set. Babos was a regular

competitor at Budapest’s last WTA event, a clay court tournament last held in 2013, and throughout the week dropped just one set en route to the final. Babos, No. 33 in the WTA rankings, clinched her first title since 2012 in Monterrey. Former world No.1 and ethnic Hungarian Monica Seles presented the trophy after arriving at the start of the weekend to take in the semifinals.

Lo n d o n, F e b 2 7 (IANS): Real Madrid had to dig deep in the 24th week of Spanish First Division soccer action to come up with its 3-2 road win over Villarreal, battling back from a twopoint disadvantage during the second period. After a first period and early in the second, when Villar real was clearly dominant, racking up two goals and holding Madrid scoreless, Zinedine Zidane’s boys upped the intensity in the last half hour of play before 21,400 spectators at the Ceramica Stadium to find the twine three times, enabling them to remain at the top of Spain’s La Liga. Despite solid play before the break, Villarreal didn’t manage to get on the board until the 50th minute, however, when Manu Trigueros finally got one into the net on a bouncing shot. Then, just six minutes later, it was Bruno Soriano who fired a great through

shot to Cedric Bakambu, who tapped it in to score for 6th-place home team, putting them ahead by two and seemingly setting the tone for the match. But that was when Real Madrid got themselves together to stage an ever more effective counterattack, with Cristiano Ronaldo firing a shot-on-goal that just barely missed, ricocheting off the post. And, in the 64th minute, Isco located Gareth Bale and fired a crossing shot over to end in an easy header that finally got the visitors on the board. Then, Toni Kroos blasted a powerful shoton-goal that was blocked in the 72nd minute, hitting Bruno in the arm, which the official spotted for a penalty kick - although Villar real coach Fran Escriba was ejected for expressing his outrage over the call. Ronaldo made the score two minutes later, tying the match up, and

Substitute Alvaro Morata is mobbed by his Real Madrid team-mates after scoring a header in the dying moments to win the tie.

Real Madrid continued capitalising on its momentum, with Alvaro Morata knocking in the winning header in the 83rd minute after coming in to replace Benzema. Earlier, Messi came to Barcelona’s rescue for the second time in a week by snatching a winner in the 86th minute to give his side a barely deserved win at Atletico. Rafinha had put

Luis Enrique’s side ahead against the run of play with a scrappy finish in the 63rd minute but Godin nodded in Koke’s free kick to level in the 70th. For much of the game, Barca looked to be suffering a lack of confidence from their 4-0 thrashing at Paris St Germain in the Champions League.
