DoSE cracks whip on proxy teachers

Correspondent

KOHIMA, FEB 25 (NPN): After the Department of School Education (DoSE) began cracking the whip against proxy teachers in 2019, 12 teachers involved in the unethical practice have so far been detected. The department also found that some government school teachers were doing private jobs during analysis of the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) data. Highly-placed sources informed Nagaland Post that after preliminary inquiries, it was found that the 12 teachers from different districts were at fault and disciplinary proceedings were initiated against them in 2019. Severe penalties were imposed on the 12 teachers – four graduate teachers and eight primary teachers – which included recovery

of salary paid during the period of undertaking dual employment and reduction in scale pay in four stages for four years. DoSE was no exception when it came to poor school performance, proxy teachers, discrepancies in Mid Day Meal scheme, inadequate posting of teachers, especially math and science teachers, absence of head teachers etc. However, there was little or no mechanism in place to detect the anomalies that has been taking place until two years back when the department started cracking the whip against proxy teachers and has slowly been tightening the noose on teachers involved in unethical practices. It was learnt that out of the 12 penalized teachers, two graduate teachers have resigned after paying the penalties imposed against them.

Teachers keeping proxies, holding dual jobs to face termination School Education principal director, Shanavas C told this correspondent that the department had earlier given strict warning to the erring teachers in the beginning and now it had started imposing huge penalties on those who would not mend their ways. He warned that the quantum of punishment against teachers keeping proxies and undertaking dual services would be more severe, to the extent of termination in the coming days. Further, he stated that the department was in the process of initiating disciplinary proceedings against

those school heads that had turned blind eye towards the erring teachers under relevant provisions of the Nagaland Government Servant Conduct Rules, 1968. With the implementation of technology-based tools like online school monitoring system and Teacher app, Shanavas hoped that DoSE’s cleaning up operation would yield good results within a short period of time. Along with other officials from the directorate, he said he would conduct frequent surprise inspections and exuded confidence that the actions initiated would serve as lesson for all school teachers. It may be recalled that during a surprise inspection in Kiphire district in October 2019, the principal director had detected many cases of proxy and absentee teachers. The teachers were di-

Centre may cut auto fuel taxes by Rs 5/ltr: BofA NEW DELHI, FEB 25 (AGENCIES): Centre may cut fuel taxes by Rs 5/litre to ease pressure on consumers as average price of global crude oil is seen to be around $60 per barrel, analysts at Bank of America (BofA) said. “We have raised our FY22 Center’s fiscal deficit by 30 basis points to 7.5% of GDP, expecting Rs.5 per litre oil tax cut,” BofA was quoted as saying by The Financial Express. The Rs 5/litre tax cut can reduce

Centre’s income by around Rs 71,760 crore. The price of Indian basket of crude is currently at $62/barrel, up from $50/ barrel in mid-December, supported by global demand recovery and voluntary production cuts from major oil exporting nations. Owing to lower demand, Indian basket of crude prices were in the range of $19-$44/barrel in the first half of FY21, when crude import bill fell 57% annually to $22.5 billion. “We have retained our

9% FY22 growth forecast with the boost to consumption from oil tax cuts likely to offset impact of the pressure on yields from a higher fiscal deficit,” BofA added. The brokerage firm has raised its RBI open market operations forecast by $9 billion to $48 billion, with oil imports driving up the current account deficit. Meanwhile, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das Thursday said the Centre and

states should talk and look for a “coordinated action” over reducing taxes on diesel and petrol whose prices have risen sharply in the recent weeks. As the political protests against the mounting fuel prices took different forms, Sitharaman also said the question during an interaction with students asking if the Centre is mulling reducing cess or other taxes on fuel to give some respite to consumers has put her in “dharm-sankat” (dilemma).
