IMPHAL, FEB 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday took a jibe at Ibobiled Congress government in Manipur alleging that they were spreading lies to the people on the ‘Framework Agreement’ signed between Government of India and the NSCN (I-M) on August 3, 2015. Addressing the high octane election rally in Imphal’s Langjing Achouba ground, Modi said: “Not a single word in the framework agreement is against the interest of Manipur. A person who looted for 15 years is now spreading lies. The Naga Accord was signed one and a half years ago. Was the Congress asleep that time? And now they are spreading lies.” Modi accused Congress of attempting to retain power by meddling with the sentiments of the people on sensitive issues like territorial integrity of the state. Modi said Congress government in Manipur was spreading false propaganda on the Naga accord. He alleged that the Ibobi Singh government was carrying out “false campaign and

KISAMA, FEB 25 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, on Saturday while expressing apprehension that Nagas may lose sight of the rich tradition in the name of modernity has called upon the Nagas to preserve their culture and tradition. Speaking as special invitee on the occasion of Sekrenyi festival at Bamboo Hall Kisama here, the chief minister emphasised on the importance of mother tongue, which he said was

one of the main identities of the Nagas. Dr. Shürhozelie said that as a person of literature he was very concerned over the neglect of mother tongue mostly among the young people. In this regard, he urged the leaders and elders to encourage the young generation to learn and uphold their mother tongues. Dr. Shürhozelie said Nagas were “fighting for freedom”, but questioned whether “we know the true meaning of freedom.” He maintained that there was no meaning fighting for

freedom as there can be no freedom without identity. He said although many have become Christians today, the good values and habits that were passed on by the forefathers were fading. The chief minister was, however, optimistic that with the celebration of Sekrenyi festival, the purification festival of Angami community, the good values would be embedded in “us” again. Dr. Shürhozelie also expressed delight on seeing young people attending the celebration in their traditional attires.

He further said with the celebration, one should also renew and cleanse oneself by forgiving and forgetting the past misdeeds. Asserting that every society has a history, the chief minister stressed on the need to revisit Naga history and educate the young people on the subject. He called upon the leaders to contribute towards the good of the society, saying that whatever great things were achieved would go down in Naga history. Earlier, delivering Sekrenyi greetings, the Angami Public Organisation (APO) president, Dr. Vilhusa Seleyi, highlighted on the significance of the festival, Rev. Fr. Alex Vizo said the invocation prayer while vote of thanks was proposed by Angamimiapfüko Krotho (AMK) president, Ruokouheü Miachie-o. ISIS wants to take over India: rescued doctor LONDON, FEB 25 (AGENCIES): The doctor released from the captivity of the Islamic State, Ramamurthy Kosanam, has said the terror group has a “lot of interest” in India and wants to “take over”. Dr Kosanam, who reached India on Saturday morning, told CNN-News18 that he could understand from the interactions with his captors that the IS was “impressed with India’s education system and economic growth”. He, however, said his captors did not go into any details of their plans, if they had any. Recounting his ordeal, the doctor said he was subjected to mental torture and was forced to watch their “terrible videos”. “They forced me to watch their gory activities,” he said, adding that they would talk to

him very rudely. “They beat some of the prisoners in front of us,” Kosanam, who was abducted by IS terrorists nearly 18 months ago, said. On the larger objective of the Islamic State, Kosanam said, “They are a hard-core terrorist group and want to spread their clout throughout the world.” He added that the group wants to impose its rules and regulations on everybody. Kosanam remained under captivity for at least a year before being asked to work for the group. “I told them that I didn’t have a lot of experience, but still they asked me to work,” he told CNN-News18. After spending a year and a half under IS rule and witnessing the group’s brutality first hand, Kosanam was grateful to the Indian government.

NEW YORK, FEB 25 (IANS): Intake of prebiotics -- dietary fibers found naturally in foods like chicory, artichokes, raw garlic, leeks and onions -- may help improve sleep and act as a buffer against the physiological impacts of stress, a study shows. Prebiotics are certain types of non-digestible fibers that probiotic bacteria feed on, such as the fibers found in many plant sources like asparagus, oatmeal, and legumes as well as in

breast milk. The findings showed that rats on the prebiotic diet spent more time in non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep, which is restful and restorative and is dreamless, than those on the non-prebiotic diet. “We found that dietary prebiotics can improve nonrapid eye movement (REM) sleep, as well as REM sleep after a stressful event,” said lead author Robert Thompson, post-doctoral student at University of Colorado - Boulder. “Given that suf-

ficient NREM sleep and proper nutrition can impact brain development and function and that sleep problems are common in early life, it is possible that a diet rich in prebiotics started in early life could help improve sleep, support the gut microbiota and promote optimal brain/ psychological health,” added Monika Fleshner, Professor at University of Colorado Boulder. For the study, published in the journal Frontiers in Behavioural Neuroscience, the team fed three-week-old male rats a diet of either standard chow or chow that included prebiotics. They then monitored the rats’ body temperature, gut bacteria and sleep-wake cycles -- using EEG, or brain activity testing -- over time. REM sleep is believed to be critical for promoting recovery from stress -- previously been shown to reduce healthy diversity of gut bacteria.

Parties complain to EC over non-availability of fuel

IMPHAL, Feb 25 (Agencies): Various political parties have complained to the EC over non-availability of fuel in blockade-hit Manipur. Poll campaigning has been hit as the United Naga Council-sponsored highway stir has disrupted the supply of fuel and essential commodities to the state. While the parties got their oil quota from the state government, candidates had to arrange fuel fpor themselves on their own. In January and the first part of this month, poll nominees were compelled to buy fuel from the grey market at a higher price, increasing their daily expenditure. But the situation improved this week after the Centre airlifted fuel from Guwahati and the state gov-

ernment brought essential commodities through the Imphal-Silchar highway. Most oil stations are now open and the queues have become shorter. EC officials here said the leaders of nine political parties, who met a central EC team on Wednesday, voiced their concern over the prevailing law and order situation and the ongoing economic blockade. The leaders demanded peaceful completion of the election process. The EC assured political parties of taking all possible measures to conduct free, fair and peaceful polls. It also promised to look into their problems and take appropriate action. The parties urged the EC to ef-

fectively utilise the forces in insurgency-hit areas. They demanded that vulnerability mapping of locations be done more carefully. “They also urged the EC to maintain communal harmony,” said an official. At the meeting, some parties complained about misuse of power by the ruling party. They charged the Congress with using the state machinery for electoral gains and complained about the neutrality of some state government officials. The EC has already asked all officials, including police, to remain neutral while discharging their duties during the poll process. It also warned of action against officials if there are any complaints.

NSCN/GPRN condemns; warns DIMAPUR, Feb 25 (NPN): NSCN/GPRN through its MIP has condemned the raids allegedly conducted by supporters of BJP candidate Francis Ngajokpa of Tadubi Constituency where six national worker’s houses were ransacked and destroyed in the presence of wives and children terming it as “arson against the state.” MIP NSCN/GPRN in a press note stated this was in connection to the ‘anti-national’ activities of one exNaga Army namely Benedict Daniel which prompted the NSCN/GPRN to raid his house at Maram on February 23 during which one AK series rifle and two.22 rifles along with live ammo were recovered from his residence though he managed to escape. In this regard, NSCN (I-M), while maintaining that the government was tasked with keeping the nation safe from internal and external threats, warned that “any actions whatsoever taken if Benedict Daniel fails to turn himself in to the regional authorities for clarifications to prove his innocence in 24 hours’ time period, he himself is to be blamed.” NSCN/GPRN further warned every one not to harbour a fugitive. “Anyone found violating this azha will be answerable to the Naga people,” MIP stated.

Rama Rao said that such incidents do raise concern among parents and relatives of those who have gone to the US for jobs or higher education. Rama Rao, who is son of Telangana Chief

Srinivas Kuchibhotla Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, said he will discuss with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, the security concern among students and professionals working in US who want an assurance that this kind of incidents will not recur. The Minister said immediately after learning about the incident, he contacted the officer on special duty on Sushma Swaraj’s office and called for immediate steps to bring home of the body of the slain engineer at the earliest. Rama Rao earlier expressed shock and anguish over the spate of attacks the US, the latest being the killing of.Srinivas. “Shocked & anguished by the spate of attacks in US. Vamshi last month, Srinivas & Alok now,” he

tweeted on Saturday. Rama Rao said the state government will work with the Ministry of External Affairs to offer support to the distressed. Kuchibhotla, 32, was killed and Alok Madasani was injured when Adam W. Purinton, a white man who earlier served in the US Navy, shot them at the Austins Bar & Grill in Olathe, Kansas state, on Wednesday night. Purinton reportedly got into an argument with the victims and hurled racial slurs. He yelled “get out of my country”, “terrorist” before shooting them. Kuchibhotla of Hyderabad and his colleague Madasani from Warangal district in Telangana were working as aviation programme managers at Garmin, an MNC. Kuchibhotla is the second man from Telangana to die in a shootout in the US this month. Software engineer Vamshi Reddy Mamidala was shot dead in Milpitas, California, on February 10, by an offender in the garage of his apartment building. The 27-year-old, who hailed from Warangal district, died when the assailant opened fire while fleeing after robbing a woman.

Telangana Minister for NRI Affairs K.T. Mamata saddened, expresses shock

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday expressed grief over the killing of Indian engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla, who was shot dead in an apparent hate crime in the US. The Trinamool Congress supremo said she does not support the “politics of hate.” “Saddened and shocked at the incident of Indian engineer in Kansas USA, who was an unfortunate victim. We don’t support the politics of hate,” she said on Twitter. She said: “The world is one big family. People from different countries live in different nations. We must all understand this.”Purinton reportedly got into an argument with the victims and hurled racial slurs. He yelled “get out of my country”, “terrorist” before shooting them.

New Delhi, Feb 25 (IANS): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday slammed Delhi Police for showing alleged laxity in handling the clashes at Delhi University’s Ramjas College and alleged that the police force has turned into an “agent” of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “We strongly criticise the manner in which the Delhi Police has become an agent of the ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) and the BJP,” Kejriwal told reporters here. He said that police’s duty is to protect the citizens and not allow ABVP “goons” to indulge in violence. “We strongly condemn violence in Delhi University and hope that Prime Minister (Narendra Modi), whose responsibility is to maintain law and order in Delhi as police reports to him, will punish the culprits,” Kejriwal said. He also appealed to Modi to not act as a “BJP worker” and perform his “Sarwar was taken by duty in an impartial way. “The Delhi Police rethe ATS team to Gujarat ports to the Prime Minister. after arresting,” she said. NEW DELHI/PATNA, FEB 25 (AGENCIES): Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar today took a potshot at Prime Minister Narendra Modi by questioning his self-proclaimed ‘motherson’ relationship with the River Ganga. Without naming the Prime Minister, Nitish jibed at PM Modi’s oft-refeated remark “Maa Ganga ne bulaya hai” (Mother Ganga has called me) during public rallies by saying Modi has become an absentee son. “Kaha gaya ‘Maa Ganga ne bulaya hai’, lekin hum Banaras gaye toh log keh rahe the Ganga Maa khoj rhi thi kahan gaya mera beta,” Nitish said earlier today. “It was said that ‘Mother Ganga called to me’, but when I went to Banaras (Varanasi), the people said Mother Ganga was looking for her missing son,” the JD(U) chief said. Nitish was alluding to PM Modi’s infrequent visits to his constituency Varanasi, from where he contested and won the Lok Sabha polls in 2014. While filing his nomination in Varanasi, the Prime Minister had memorably said, “Na toh mujhe kisi ne bheja hai, na main yahan khud aaya hoon, mujhe toh Maa Ganga ne bulaya hai (I don’t think anyone has sent me here, or that I have come here. I feel Mother Ganga has called me to Varanasi).” The Bihar chief minister’s remarks are the latest in a long history of flip-flops in his attitude towards PM Modi. Once alliance part-

Decades under wrap

t was quite unexpected to have the union home minister Rajnath Singh tell public in Imphal during his recent campaign that there is no mention at all of ‘Manipur’ in the framework agreement signed between the government of India and NSCN (I-M). Taking up the matter, the Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) which purportedly claims to serve and protect the interests of the people of Nagaland also demanded that this should be clarified, of course, the NTC had grabbed the opportunity to echo its stand that anything in any agreement which the Nagas of Nagaland do not support, will not be acceptable. The issue has raised interest in Manipur especially in the heat of the election campaign. Rajnath Singh was also only playing politics by telling the majority Meiteis that the centre will not cause Manipur to disintegrate or be bifurcated. This was a statement of assurance to the Meiteis, and coming form no less than the union home minister, there can be no other interpretation. When the union home minister could be so forthright; there is little reason why our politicians can’t explain what not to expect. In Nagaland, the NPF government has been toeing the line of the Centre that the issues being discussed are almost covered and only few areas remain. However the government either does not want to speak out or simply does not know, what are the issues being discussed by the negotiating parties. Instead the chief ministers of the NPF have spoken very strongly in support of the direction and progress of the negotiations but have not shed any light. In fact one chief minister went on to advise people not to discuss and speculate since it would only create misgivings and adversely affect the course of a solution. Perhaps the legislators have much idea about the negotiations that all of them have been steadfast in urging the government of India to bring early solution. Delegations comprising of legislators and ministers had met with past and present prime ministers to urge for an early solution and have expressed full support to the ongoing negotiations. That much said would have made sense if the issues under discussions were known. However the elected members, probably except for a handful have the foggiest idea but they continue to adhere to political correctness so as not to attract criticism. That means, none know anything about the Accord but parrot the same cliché such as - welcoming the talks and urging upon all sections to join hands in helping to bring about a solution to the Naga political issue. Chief Ministers and elected members seem to have their everything for solution and totally neglected how to affect good governance. Nagaland society is in a confused mess and the cloud of uncertainty has steered frustration among the poor middle class and rural folks and there appears to be little that can be expected from the present lot. Perhaps that is why even today society is still grappling with the ailments of the past that are being brushed under the carpet for convenience or for whatever pretexts or pretence. The accord is supposed to involve Nagas living in all areas, so it should be treated as such and time has come to spell out what people should expect and not expect.

DailyDevotion The Destitution of Service

…though the more abundantly I love you, the less I am loved. —2 Corinthians 12:15 Natural human love expects something in return. But Paul is saying, “It doesn’t really matter to me whether you love me or not. I am willing to be completely destitute anyway; willing to be poverty-stricken, not just for your sakes, but also that I may be able to get you to God.” “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor…” (2 Corinthians 8:9). And Paul’s idea of service was the same as our Lord’s. He did not care how high the cost was to himself— he would gladly pay it. It was a joyful thing to Paul. The institutional church’s idea of a servant of God is not at all like Jesus Christ’s idea. His idea is that we serve Him by being the servants of others. Jesus Christ actually “out-socialized” the socialists. He said that in His kingdom the greatest one would be the servant of all (see Matthew 23:11). The real test of a saint is not one’s willingness to preach the gospel, but one’s willingness to do something like washing the disciples’ feet— that is, being willing to do those things that seem unimportant in human estimation but count as everything to God. It was Paul’s delight to spend his life for God’s interests in other people, and he did not care what it cost. But before we will serve, we stop to ponder our personal and financial concerns— “What if God wants me to go over there? And what about my salary? What is the climate like there? Who will take care of me? A person must consider all these things.” All that is an indication that we have reservations about serving God. But the apostle Paul had no conditions or reservations. Paul focused his life on Jesus Christ’s idea of a New Testament saint; that is, not one who merely proclaims the gospel, but one who becomes broken bread and poured-out wine in the hands of Jesus Christ for the sake of others.

Post-mortem Influx of Illegal Bangladeshi Immigrants vis-à-vis NPF Manifesto 2013

W

riting this on the eve of a new political development in our state, I allow myself to ponder on things of the past, and anticipate eagerly on what is to come. While many will debate on who should/ought be the new leader of our state, this new development is a welcome change from the impasse of the last twenty days. Congratulations to Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu on becoming the Chief Minister of Nagaland. I can safely assume that any change ending the prolonged social unrest and turmoil causing untold suffering and loss to public properties and crippling the entire state machinery, is welcomed by all parties. As we can all imagine this ascendancy will be anything but celebratory for the incumbent CM as the road ahead is littered with challenges and the tasks daunting. I do however hope that with his invaluable experiences as a veteran politician, he will employ his wisdom and sympathetic spirit to truly work for the cause of the people. With numerous pressing issues which will unquestionably be dealt with in earnest, I wish to draw his kind attention to one grave issue for which I believe he is most apt to tackle. It is one whose negative repercussions is no doubt being experienced by my generation, but has the potential to obliterate the next generation and our race as a whole if we allow it to fester. We can no longer remain mute spectators, numbed by our selfish designs, oblivious to the growing signs of this menace. The NPF Manifesto for the Nagaland Assembly Elections 2013, under Agenda (xxi) –Illegal Immigrants, the party admits that the problem of illegal immigrants remains an issue of ‘utmost importance’. They have also declared that the Party’s ‘stand on this issue cannot be compromised under any circumstances’. As the former party president and now the Chief Minister, I cannot imagine a more

ur attention has been drawn to an article published by the Australian newspaper The Age on February 1, 2017 captioned “Nagaland, where men are on strike until women go back to the kitchen”. All throughout the fighting months we have witnessed our civil societies’ reasoning the infringement of Article 371A where taxation would be imposed upon our individual properties, land etc… for which Nagaland shouldn’t go ahead with ULB polls (with WR). But now the story is totally something else, very loud and clear that Naga men opposed 33% WR because they want women to stay at home and not enter public life. Interested readers may follow the link: http:// www.theage.com.au/world/ nagaland-where-men-are-onstrike-until-women-go-backto-the-kitchen-20170214gucdtw.html Here are some of the quotes of Naga men taken out from the said article (the words of JCC, CNTC and a volunteer respectively during interview with ‘The Age’ journalist Amrit Dhillon) “Naga women work at home and in the fields. Men go to war. Men make the decisions. That’s Naga culture for centuries and we won’t allow anyone to destroy our culture.” “In Naga society, a woman is not equal to a man. We give women all respect but they cannot make decisions. Even in our village councils, women speak only if they are invited to give their opinion to the men. Giving women equality will destabilize our society and our ancient customs.” “The only women demanding change are spinsters and divorced women. Other women accept our system in which decision making is done by men. Women can

conducive time as now for him to make good of the promises made in his party’s Manifesto for the Assembly Elections 2013. As President and signatory of the NPF Manifesto 2013, I am well aware that he needs no reminding of the promises and assurances given to us. However, the ground reality today falls dismally short of the promises made to us. There is a colossal influx of IBIs today, pouring in day and night, not just into Dimapur and neighbouring districts but to Kohima, the capital of the state. Businesses owned by them are growing like weed every day, depriving many Naga youth their share in this commercial exercise. The threat of an economic annhilation is not the only issue facing us. Social crimes perpetrated by them are on the rise. Cat calling and eve teasing by these aliens, a culture so abhorrent to our Naga society is now common place. While it may seem harmless, it is a blatant show of disrespect for women and audacious disregard of the norms and culture of the host community. In its manifesto, the party has stated that in order to tackle this grave matter it will follow certain policies with ‘sincerity’. I am curious if the party has been able to follow up on the policies mentioned by them:• Take the civil societies and NGOs into confidence for tighter controls • Make ILP system fully computerized with statewide databank. • Check and control misuse of ILP system by Government officers, employees and contractors. • Initiate steps to detect illegal infiltrators and delete their names from electoral rolls. • Take up the issue with the centre and neighbouring state Governments to control inflow if illegal immigrants. The NPF party is now in its fifth year in power, and till today we are yet to witness any action or hear of any of the

only take kitchen decisions. We take the big ones.” I wouldn’t say ‘discrimination’ when we talk about gender rather, I prefer to say traditional attitude towards women. Finally the outcome appears to be a slap on the face of hundreds of women in traditional attire seated alongside the volunteers in the streets. It is also a mockery to entire Naga women who supported tribal bodies and not NMA. Dear men, kindly take trouble to trust Naga women that we wouldn’t put the entire Nagaland into forced taxation for want of WR. We can’t afford to lose property rights being indigenous and protected people. It should be the collective effort to protect our rights together at any cost, if at all, the interpretation of Law is constitutionally true to the claim of tribal bodies. We sincerely stand by you if 33% WR in ULB should bring disaster to Naga society. But judging by the standard of interview, we regret to disagree if your traditional attitude is an obstacle that Naga women should be in confinement till Jesus comes. Naga women are no doubt on the disadvantage side when it comes to Naga customary practices since our ancestor’s time. It was head-hunting era where women leadership was out of question but still women’s role in society is hardly a matter of concern in 2017. Does it mean preservation of ‘ancient custom’ in Naga version? I believe we should also stress on traditional practices that have been dropped out drastically over the decades. We know modernization has brought tremendous changes in the system if we look back at original religion, traditional wedding, indigenous lifestyle, attire, food habit, vanishing culture and lan-

policy on this issue mentioned in their manifesto being implemented. On the contrary, this ailment has only gotten worse. The IBI population has grown manifold since 2013, and it increases every single day the government remains silent. While contemplating on this issue, I am astounded by the lack of urgency on the part of the Government in curbing this threat. It is my belief that the Chief Minister also being the former president and authorized signatory of the manifesto is the right man, at the right time with the right means to make good of the party’s promise to tackle this perilous issue which threatens the very Naga identity and culture which the party has declared to ‘protect and preserve’. In the eventuality that, he with all the power at his disposal is unable to carry out this exercise to ‘preserve and protect’ vis-à-vis the IBI influx, it will be hard to imagine if any other person can do it, at any other time, in any other government. As rightly pointed out by Ms.Vikali Shikhu in her article, “People’s movement needs legal clarity, unbiased issue-based and unity”, in the Nagaland Post dated 17 Feb, 2017, we only have two options; follow the Mokokchung Blueprint or succumb to the Tripura version. With the Supreme Court soon to have a constitution bench hearing in the month of May (May 11 to July 1) on the status of citizenship of children born of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Assam, it is extremely alarming to even think the state would be compelled to grant citizenship to them, should the Supreme Court pass the verdict in their favour. It will set a precedent for all states to follow. For now we are only playing host to them, granting them retail space, buying their merchandise and helping them flourish and prosper in all possible means. The day is not far when we will have

them clawing at our share in jobs, educational institutions, and all other avenues reserved for us. To my Naga brethren I ask this, do we all share the same urgency and threat to come together to fight this clear and present danger, as we did the last three weeks? We fought to keep the sanctity of the Special provision given to us in the form on Art 371A. I am compelled to believe that, leaders of this movement had been fighting not only for the protection of the rights of the present generation but to safeguard the rights of all future generations. While these laws are established to protect us and all our descendants, what good are these laws if one day we become but a minority in our own land, having handed over the reigns of power to an alien, because the day is not far when we will have become the mirror image of our neighbouring state Tripura, who is overrun by settlers and the indigenous population reduced to a miserable minority. As mentioned in the NPF manifesto, the advantage of a regional party is that it listens to its people, and that it is ‘at people’s command’. While I dare say this article is a command, I do believe I speak for a majority of the people. Here, as a young person and a woman and a Naga, who voted this party into power, believing in its promises, I plead in all earnestness to the Chief Minister of Nagaland to make good the promises laid down by his party to tackle this issue of Illegal Immigrants. The NPF has wisely declared that, ‘Growth can only be achieved if the political leadership of the government understands the realities of the ground situation’, I hope this write up has been helpful in conveying to the party leadership even in the briefest means, the ground reality of the people’s situation. The tag that hurts

guage etc. If so, where’s the talk of equality for preservation of Naga culture passed down from forefathers since time immemorial? Why do some people ONLY feel the pulse against women leadership while talking about preservation of customs and traditions? Customary Law has no written document but only practised down the ages and we respect that. Those were the days of head hunting when Customary Law was framed. Forefathers never dreamed women would one day excel and shine in the society with leadership skills. Men would bring home war heads with pride and women were not more than housewives. Remember our ancestors were warriors and they were never dependent on women for living. If traditional responsibility of men for family’s survival has to be taken into consideration, how many men walk the talk unlike forefathers? In many household today, women’s earning makes 50% of family’s economy. Husband and wife earn together, sponsor children’s education together and develop properties together. Look around, the number of homes that solely depend on women for bread and butter is interestingly very high in Nagaland today. Many jobless fathers and unemployed sons are fed by working women. Despite knowing the fact that women are traditionally bounded to have no access to property rights, women continue to be the backbone with no expectations or returns. But the talk of Naga custom dominates society if women were to talk about their place in the society. Coming to equal treatment, equal respect and equal opportunity, the word EQUALITY is yet to take

shape practically for Naga women belonging to some community. I’m proud to be a Sumi woman the way Sumi menfolk protect, love, respect and take care of women. I must admit not all are fortunate like Sumi women, we should think for general Naga women not getting deserving place in the society. Equal respect-- Respecting an IAS, IPS, NCS, NPS woman officer or HoDs is by virtue of designation, she is a self made. By the way educated man and woman are treated equally, but not others. Please read in between the lines. Equal opportunity -Women are never given opportunity in community decision making body. When general meetings are called in villages/colonies/wards, irrespective of brain or nobrain, all men are mandatory for attendance. If at all only menfolk are to be invited to a meeting, why do they term it “general meeting”? Why gender plays a role when it comes to general participation? Womenfolk are called ONLY to cook and serve them hot meal and to clean the dishes. Where is equality? The best example of equal opportunity is reflected in education. Nagaland has produced many women bureaucrats and professionals. Their success doesn’t mean triumph over gender bias that they compete with men but equality in education is the outcome. Many say the names of Indian women politicians like Mamata Banerjee, Sushma Swaraj, Vasundhara Raje, Jayalalitha etc. I’m sorry if my ignorance is at fault but I failed to connect our situation to their level of upbringings. Ours is a society where women weren’t encouraged to take part even

We wish the name ‘Nagaland for Christ’ be used beneficially

W

e wish to appeal to all our dearest brothers and sisters of Nagaland that each one use the Name “Nagaland For Christ” so dear to our hearts. The name “Nagaland For Christ” is not a human composition. It has been used because God revealed to various saints and prophets at different times, places and to different tribes. There are several prayer centers /Ministries with this name “Nagaland For Christ” and these people always pray for the welfare of Naga people. The Prayer Centers and Churches use this Name in prayers that Naga people will able to keep the commandments of God and do God’s will and so on. The Name is used by Naga National Workers because they have testimonies and God’s messages. Nagas are not the creation of Nature but are God’s children and we enjoy His blessings and creations. There is nothing wrong that Nagas take the Name of God and use ” Nagaland For Christ.” Because there is no other name(s) in whose name(s) we can be saved. (Acts 4:12). As Doctor is very important for a serious patient so also God’s Name/ salavation/grace is very important for a worst sinner. The Naga society is sick with different complications and diseases. In this body of sickness, you may be big or small, rich or poor, Holy or filthy but Nagas must all “ Pray without ceasing.” (1Thes.5:17) for one another and for Naga family so that God will heal us all and guide us to move ahead. It is very sure that there will be some people who use Jesus’s Name for cheating, stealing, extortions, killings etc. If anyone is misusing God’s Name, great danger await them (Ex.20:7;Mt.18:6-7;Mk.9:47-48;Rev.20:13-15),yet, these people too must repent now and stop doing evil(John 5:14; Prov.28:13),However, the times of stumbling, shaking, testing and refining of faith comes to all believers. So while condemning few people, if you happen to hurt the innocent believers who are interceding day and night with tears for Naga people at ” Nagaland For Christ Prayer Ministries, Prayer Centers and Naga believers who dearly used the name” Nagaland For Christ.” in their prayers, with whom the Holy Spirit dwells, you will be badly injured spiritually as it happened to a group of boys at Bethel (2Kings 2:23-24). Jesus said,” … blessed is anyone who takes no offense at Me.”(Lk.7:23). Nagas are not protected and blessed for the people who misused Christ’ Name but because of the righteous people who earnestly pray to God and do God’s will. Therefore, We wish all our dearest Naga brothers and sisters to use the name “Nagaland For Christ” so dear to your hearts and be blessed. There is a great benefit of loving Jesus Name so close to our hearts. Atonoka Swu, Lima Lkr and & Kuvus Aomi, Lerie Chazou Colony, Kohima

in grassroot level decision making. There’s no ground for comparative study. Equal treatment -- We have some men in the society who are very impartial and true in their dealings. Meantime, we also have some section of menfolk who do not believe in women, hence, do not accept women leadership. Who knows how many of them would even go to the extent of preventing wife and daughters from voting for women candidates? And most importantly, only God knows whether or not women candidates would be even allotted the precious party ticket in the midst of male counterparts. Come next ULB election, the much awaited talk of equality is yet to see the light of the day. This write-up is in no way political but a practicalbased opinion reflecting on the contents of ‘The Age’ article. Gender has no potential but it absolutely rests with individuals. There are many modern Naga women whose contribution to the society is much more than men. The 21st century women

would definitely consider it as mockery to our education and our contribution to family and society. Olden days have long gone and therefore, old thinking and traditional attitude should also be done away with. I fully agree that there are many area of concern we present generation should go back to roots and embrace our culture. We have abandoned half of Naga customary practices or more due to shortest route to civilization. Practices that need to be carried forward should continue but we need to be a little sensible wherever necessary. Most importantly, we need to have a serious thought on visible extinction of languages and culture amongst the Naga tribes. Modernization and preservation of culture should go hand in hand and neither should supersede the other. Together we share responsibilities, progress together, build family and society together. Naga men may please avoid labeling us back to ancestor’s time; that TAG hurts. Vikali Shikhu, Dimapur

It is important that some history of the Nagas and formation of statehood be included in the school text books. Most of our children donot even know who the first chief minister was or even prior to pre-statehood. NBSE need to include important and accurate details for the consumption of the school children. In fact, even grown ups donot know much about our political journey so far. If we can study about the ancient Indian history/Mughals and British, then we can also learn something about our own state. It was Nagaland Post that gave the accurate number of the present chief minister as the 11th in the sequence. Such accuracy need to be imparted to the public. Anthony Angami, Kohima

MK Stalin

C H E N NA I , F E B 2 5 (AGENCIES): The ruling AIADMK today took strong exception to certain remarks made against late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa by DMK leader M K Stalin and sought an “open apology” from him. Claiming that Stalin had used certain words against Jayalalithaa yesterday, AIADMK Deputy General Secretary TTV Dinakaran said they were completely “false” and showed DMK leader’s “uncultured side“. Stalin, who is also the Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, had objected to government schemes being named after Jayalalithaa and “taxpayers’ money being used in her 69th birthday celebrations“. Jayalalithaa was loved

by Tamils world over and they addressed her affectionately as ‘Amma’ (Mother) even as she was known for her compassion, Dinakaran, who is VK Sasikala’s nephew, said. “When scores of her supporters are in grief following her demise (in December 2016), making such slander and false remarks shows Stalin’s uncultured side,” he said in a statement. Recalling Jayalalithaa’s efforts to uphold Tamil Nadu’s rights, Dinakaran said she had done these in issues like the Cauvery water dispute, besides earning the love of people with a series of welfare measures, including the popular free 20 KG rice scheme. “Because of these, she lives in the hearts of crores of people. Therefore, there is no need to uphold her memory by

just naming schemes after her,” Dinakaran said in an apparent reference to Stalin taking exception to some government schemes named after her. The DMK leader had also wanted such schemes to be renamed. “Stalin should withdraw the brazen slander used against Puratchi Thalaivi Amma and issue a public apology,” Dinakaran demanded. Referring to certain gaffe made by Stalin on Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and the Cauvery Management Board, the AIADMK leader ridiculed him and asked the DMK working

DMK backs removing Jayalalithaa’s portraits from govt offices

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Saturday called for the removal of portraits of late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa from government offices, saying she was convicted in an assets case. DMK Working President and Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly M.K. Stalin also

opposed the naming of government schemes after her and “the use of taxpayers’ money for her 69th birthday celebrations” on Friday. “Jayalalithaa was convicted [in the Rs 66 crore disproportionate assets case]. Already there are some schemes in her name and the government should not allow new schemes to be named after her,” Mr. Stalin told reporters here. He also wanted the schemes named after her to be renamed. He said the late Chief Minister’s portraits were found at the Secretariat, the Ministers’ rooms and local body offices and called for their removal. “If this situation remains, the need for us to approach the court will certainly come up. Not just [some] elected representatives but people also are opposing this and it could lead to a law and order problem,” the Opposition leader said. He said he took up these matters with Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan, who had assured him that she would look into them.

Stents pricing: Centre issues 7.5 pc Indians suffer from directives to erring hospitals mental disorders: WHO report NEW DELHI, FEB 25 (Agencies): No action will be taken against hospitals under the scanner for overcharging on stents if they refund the money to patients before receiving a demand notice, drug price regulator NPPA said. The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) said the matter would end there for such hospitals if there were no further complaints. “If the hospitals under the scanner refund money to patients before NPPA issues ‘demand notice’, matter ends till there is no new complaint,” the regulator tweeted. Explaining that a ‘show cause notice’(SCN) is issued for seeking the explanation of the hospital/company, it added that a ‘Demand Notice’ (DN) is issued when a violation is proved. The regulator also said “it would ensure complete audit of their angioplasty bills in the near future” but did not share details citing “request of patients who have got refunds and their concerns of follow up need in the same hospitals”. The NPPA had said yesterday its helpline has received complaints against Oxygen Hospital in Rohtak, Haryana and Bharat Heart Institute, Dehradun, Uttarakhand for overcharging on stents.

MUMBAI, FEB 25 (Agencies): Not only do 56 million Indians -- or 4.5% of India’s population -- suffer from depression at this moment, another 38 million Indians suffer from anxiety disorders. Thus, according to the latest World Health Organisation report on depression released on Thursday, almost 7.5% of Indians suffer from major or minor mental disorders that require expert intervention. The WHO report states that depressive disorders are characterized by sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low selfworth, disturbed sleep or ap-

petite, feelings of tiredness, and poor concentration. Anxiety disorders refer to a group of mental disorders characterized by feelings of anxiety and fear, including generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, phobias, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Worldwide, the prevalence of depression increased by 18% from 2005 to 2015. At present, there are 322 million people with depression in the world.

NEW DELHI,FEb 25 (Agencies): School buses will now have to be equipped with GPS, CCTV arrangements and speed governors as per the revised guidelines issued by the CBSE to ensure greater safety of children. These guidelines have been issued on the directions of Human Resource Development minister Prakash Javadekar after a recent school bus accident in Uttar Pradesh, official sources said. “Windows of the bus should be fitted with horizontal grills with mesh wires. School buses should be fitted with speed governors with maximum speed limit of 40 km/h. “GPS and CCTV arrangement should be made compulsorily in each vehicle and should be in working condition all the time,” a CBSE circular said. “The management and the head of the school will be held responsible for any lapse and it could lead to disaffiliation too. School buses will have to be fitted with alarm bells and sirens,” it said.

Modi, Shah ‘dreaming of harming’ UP: Mayawati Lucknow, FEB 25 (AGENCIES): Hitting back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah, BSP supremo Mayawati today termed them as “guru— chela” who, she claimed, are .“dreaming of harming” Uttar Pradesh. “Guru and chela have together harmed the country...’guru’ means Modi and ‘chela’ means Shah... now, they together are dreaming of harming the state,” she alleged at an election rally here. BJP leaders have been referring to Mayawati and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, as ‘bua—bhatija’ (aunt and nephew) during campaigning. Referring to Shah’s ‘KASAB’ acronym for the Congress, SP and BSP, Mayawati reiterated, “There is no other Kasab (meaning terrorist) bigger than the BJP president... Gujarat is an example before you to see and ensure that this Kasab does not come (to power) here“. She said, “Muslims

need to vote en masse for the BSP, whose Dalit vote is intact and is ready to defeat the BJP...if Muslims vote for the BSP, the BJP will get a setback and it will not be able to come to power in the state.” Alleging that minorities, especially Muslims, are being given “step— motherly treatment” she cautioned Muslims against voting for the SP, saying it would “directly benefit the BJP“. She also alleged that BJP will “end reservation by following the RSS agenda” or will make it ineffective.

On BJP’s promise that the party would bring prosperity on coming to power in the state, Mayawati said, “After playing petty politics of graveyard—cremation ground, Kasab, slaughter houses and donkeys of Gujarat they are now making more promises. “They can make any promise they want like the ones made during the Lok Sabha polls, but people will not fall for it,” she said. Because of the wrong policies of the BJP—led government at the Centre and the SP government in Uttar Pradesh, 22 crore people of the state are angry and frustrated, Mayawati claimed. On the SP—Congress alliance, the BSP chief said, “The Samajwadi Party is considered symbolic to crime, corruption and ‘jungle raj’ People have to decide whether they will vote for the tainted face of SP—Congress or the clean one of BSP which has shown how the rule of law is imposed.”

PM Modi’s remark stalls Odisha Assembly BHUBANESWAR,FEB 25 (Agencies): The Odisha Assembly was stalled on Saturday by repeated adjournments after both ruling BJD and Opposition Congress created ruckus over Prime Minister’s remark about the state. As soon as the House assembled for the day, Samir Ranjan Dash of BJD raised the issue and dubbed the Prime Minister’s remark of ‘acute poverty and starvation’ in Odisha as “unfortunate” which amounted to an

“insult of the people of Odisha”. Dash was supported by other ruling party legislators, including Priyadarshi Mishra who were on their feet criticising Narendra Modi for his remark at an election rally in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh on Friday. Opposition Congress also came out in support of the ruling BJD to oppose the Prime Minister’s comment. Congress Chief Whip Tara Prasad Bahinipati rose to denounce it “shameful and inappropriate”.

The House witnessed pandemonium as Congress MLAs trooped into the well shouting slogans. As BJD legislators were also seen proceeding to the well, Speaker Niranjan Pujari adjourned the House till 11.30am. When the House assembled yet again, noisy scenes were witnessed with Congress legislators storming the well and shouting slogans. Unable to run the House, Pujari adjourned the proceedings till 12.30 PM

and again till 3pm. As the House stood adjourned, ruling BJD lawmakers staged a dharna near Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in the Assembly premises protesting against the remark, while stating that it was in “bad taste”. Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra (Congress) told reporters outside the House that Modi had acted in a “disgraceful manner” by attempting to derive political mileage using poverty in Odisha.

A predominantly cash economy has now to be substituted with a digital economy, which will bring more money into the banking system and lead to better revenue generation; the integration of the informal economy with the more formal one is now taking place. “The post-demonetisation regime is actually going to generate a far bigger GDP in the long run,” he said, adding that any arguments in favour of the “virtues of a cash economy” were “absolutely trivial”.

Several of 135 transactions are common, but many of them are unique for rural,” said Bagchi. The bank is also using the digital billboards and the mobile app as a customer-acquisition strategy by providing information services at the pre-login stage and available even to non-customers. According to Bagchi, the app is designed such that once it is downloaded, data usage is minuscule and customers can use it without subscribing to a data plan. For those who do not own smartphones, the bank is promoting its basic mobile banking services on the message-based platform.

L O N D O N , F EB 2 5 (AGENCIES): Finance minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday said the demonetisation process is almost complete, hailing it as the “smoothest possible replacement” of high denomination currency anywhere in the world. Describing the government’s decision to take Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes out of circulation as a move towards creating a “new normal” in India, the minister told an audience of students and academics at the prestigious London School of Economics that it would ultimately lead to far higher growth rates. “We have almost completed the demonetisation process and it has been the smoothest possible replacement of currency

According to Bagchi, ICICI Bank is today well placed to tap the rural market with 2,300 rural branches and a large number of business correspondents. The rural branches are an outcome of the bank’s historical acquisitions of Bank of Madura, Sangli Bank and Bank of Rajasthan. “We will be launching in 700 branches and touching 60 lakh customers immediately. New Delhi, Feb 25 (PTI): Gold prices soared by Rs 325 to regain the Rs 30,000-mark and trade at over 4-month high of Rs 30,175 per 10 grams at the bullion market today, amid a firm overseas trend and wedding season buying by jewellers. Gold prices had touched Rs 30,325 per 10 grams on October 18, 2016. Silver too followed suit and surged by Rs 600 to Rs 43,800 per kg on increased offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Bullion traders said sentiment got a boost after gold climbed in global markets as weakness in the dollar pushed up demand for precious metals as safe-haven. Globally, gold rose 0.61 per cent to USD 1,256.90 an ounce, a level last seen in November last year, and silver rose 0.99 per cent to USD 18.33 an ounce in New York in yesterday’s trade.

Moreover, the Act applies to those establishments where the number of employees is not less than 10. The statement said the application of amended provision regarding maximum amount should be made effective from January 1, 2016 as done in the case of central government employees. Besides that rate of 15 days wages for each completed year of service be raised to 30 days wages, the unions demanded. The proposed amendment to the Payment of Gratuity Act as circulated by the government along with the letter dated February 15, 2017 only deals with enhancing the ceiling of maximum amount under Section 4(3) of the Act from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh, the unions said. They pointed out during the meeting that the proposed amendment is being brought to bring the maximum ceiling amount to Rs 20 lakh in line with recommendation of 7th Central Pay Commission as accepted by the government.

NEW DELHI, Feb 25 (PTI): Billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries has no plans to launch an app-based taxi service as the company sees no logic in diversifying into unrelated sectors. It has been speculated for months that Reliance Jio, the company’s telecom venture that has created ripples by signing up 100 million customers in just 170 days of launch, will soon launch a taxi service. The company had not commented on the speculations so far but took to the Twitter to deny the foray after an online publication stated that Jio has ordered some 600 cars to “kickstart” the service. The central trade unions have agreed on doubling gratuity amount ceiling as an interim measure in a tripartite meeting on the proposed amendment to Payment of Gratuity Act conducted today by the Labour Ministry. The unions demanded the removal of conditions asking to have at least 10 employees in an establishment and minimum five years of service for payment of gratuity. “While accepting the maximum payment limit of Rs 20 lakh as an interim measure, the unions demanded that the ceilings/ limit with respect to number of employees and years of service should be removed,” the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) said in a statement. He also countered the notion that giving money in hands (bank accounts) of the poor will mean that they are going to squander it. “If the money is given to women under UBI, there are less chances that it will be squandered,” he said. In reply to a question on why India is lacking in competition, especially in the manufacturing sector, he said the combination of choices India made after Independence is to blame. “Combination of choices we made during our initial year were not conducive for development of the manufacturing sector in India. We had stressed on the public sector, we had all these controls and all sets of industrial licence. HRW said that it remains concerned as the Sri Lankan government had made only halting progress towards fulfilling these commitments. The three other promised mechanisms have not made significant progress.

BERLIN, FEB 25 (AGENCIES): Angela Merkel’s conservatives have formally nominated the German chancellor as her party’s top candidate for the September parliamentary election in the region where she has her political base. The dpa news agency reported that Merkel won the support of 95 percent of delegates at a convention of the Christian Democrats’ branch in northeastern Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state Saturday. Merkel has held her parliamentary constituency in Stralsund since 1990. Polls show Merkel facing an unexpectedly strong challenge from the centerleft Social Democrats, who have been boosted by their choice of former European Parliament President Martin Schulz to challenge her. Merkel didn’t mention Schulz in her speech Saturday. But she did make a point of praising the economic reforms enacted by her center-left predecessor, Gerhard Schroeder, some of which Schulz has suggested he might amend.

DAMASCUS, FEB 25 (IANS): At least 42 persons were killed as six suicide bombers detonated themselves at two security headquarters in Syria’s central province of Homs on Saturday, a monitor group said. Three of the suicide bombers blew themselves up in al-Ghouta area and the other three in Mahata, Xinhua news agency reported. The suicide attacks were coupled with clashes in the areas. Homs Governor Talal Barazi said most of the dead were security personnel. He said Colonel Sharaf Hasan Daboul, the head of military intelligence branch in Homs, and Colonel Darwish, the chief of state security branch, were also killed.

C O LO M B O, F E B 2 5 (IANS): The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has been urged to push Sri Lanka to develop a timetable for implementing the recommendations made in 2015 on fully restoring human rights in the country. In a letter to the Permanent Missions in Geneva, H u m a n R i g h t s Wa t c h (HRW) sought support in ensuring that the upcoming consideration of Sri Lanka’s progress towards implementing its commitments under UNHRC resolution 30/1 accurately and substantively reflects the situa-

Meanwhile, Spicer during a briefing at his office said that the White House would relentlessly counter coverage it considered inaccurate. “We’re just not going to sit back and let, you know, false narratives, false stories, inaccurate facts get out there,” he said, according to reports. The Times, CNN, BuzzFeed News, The Los Angeles Times, Politico, the BBC, The Huffington Post and the Guardian were shut out of the briefing. Conservative media organisations like Breitbart News, The Washington Times and One America News Network were allowed to attend the conference. arrested. On Saturday, the Indonesian suspect, Siti Aisyah, met with her country’s deputy ambassador to Malaysia, saying she had been paid the equivalent of $90 for what she believed was a harmless prank. Aisyah, 25, said she had been introduced to people who looked like Japanese or Koreans who asked her to play a prank for a reality show, Deputy Ambassador Andriano Erwin said. Asked about whether she knew what was on her hands at the time of the attack, Erwin said: “She didn’t tell us about that. She only said that it’s a kind of oil, baby oil, something like that.” An odorless chemical with the consistency of motor oil, VX is an extremely powerful poison, with an amount no larger than a few grains of salt enough to kill. It can be inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through the skin. Then, in anywhere from a few seconds to a few hours, it can cause a range of symptoms, from blurred vision to a headache. Enough exposure leads to convulsions, paralysis, respiratory failure and death.

On Saturday, Malaysia’s tone changed. Abdul Samah Mat, the police chief leading the investigation, said authorities would give the diplomat “reasonable” time to come forward. If he doesn’t, police will issue a notice compelling him to do so. “And if he failed to turn up ... then we will go to the next step by getting a warrant of arrest from the court,” Abdul Samah told reporters. Lawyer Sankara Nair, however, noted that diplomats have immunity privileges even in criminal cases. “If he is a Korean diplomat with a diplomatic passport, then he has immunity no matter a criminal case or otherwise,” he said. “Police can apply for a warrant, but it can easily be set aside by the embassy.” Malaysia hasn’t directly accused the North Korean government of being behind the attack, but officials have said four North Korean men provided two women with poison to carry it out. The four men fled Malaysia shortly after the killing, while the women — one from Indonesia and the other Vietnamese — were

Hours after Trump’s speech, White House Press Secretar y Sean Spicer barred journalists from The New York Times and several other news organisations from attending his daily briefing. Tr u m p ’s b a r r a ge against the news media continued well into Friday night. “FAKE NEWS media knowingly doesn’t tell the truth,” he wrote on Twitter, singling out The Times and CNN. “A great danger to our country.” Trump’s attacks on the press came as the White House pushed back on a report by CNN that a White House official had asked the FBI to rebut a New York Times article last week detailing contacts between Trump’s associates and

Journalists gather in front of North Korean Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017.

WASHINGTON, FEB 25 (IANS): US President Donald Trump turned the power of the White House against the news media, escalating his attacks on journalists as “the enemy of the people” while his press secretary barred several news outlets from his briefing. In a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday, Trump criticised as “fake news” organisations that p u b l i s h a n o n y m o u s ly sourced reports that reflect poorly on him. The President also berated members of his own Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as “leakers” who he said were putting the nation at risk, the New York Times reported. to cooperate with probe

KUALA LUMPUR, FEB 25 (AGENCIES): Malaysia said Saturday that it would issue an arrest warrant for a North Korean diplomat if he refuses to cooperate with the investigation into the deadly attack on North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un’s exiled half brother. The investigation has unleashed a serious diplomatic fight between Malaysia and North Korea, a prime suspect in the Feb. 13 killing of Kim Jong Nam at Kuala Lumpur’s airport. Friday’s revelation by Malaysian police that the banned chemical weapon VX nerve agent was used to kill Kim raised the stakes significantly in a case that has broad geopolitical implications. Experts say the nerve agent used in the attack was almost certainly produced in a sophisticated state weapons laboratory and is banned under an international treaty. But North Korea never signed that treaty, and has spent decades developing a complex chemical weapons program. Kim was not an obvious political threat to his estranged half brother, Kim Jong Un. But he may have been seen as a potential rival in North Korea’s dynastic dictatorship, even though he had lived in exile for years. North Korea has denied any role in the attack. Malaysia said earlier in the week that Hyon Kwang Song, a second secretary at the North Korean Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, was wanted for questioning. But authorities at the time acknowledged that he has diplomatic immunity and that they couldn’t compel him to appear.

Oscar nominated Syrian Women Writers’ Festival concludes T3 Hype: best tech released this week; Range Rover Velar, EE Air Mast, Here One buds, Pro-Ject turntable T filmmaker blocked from US entry

T

he Oscar nominated Syrian filmmaker Khaled Kateeb has been blocked from entering the US. Kateeb was due to arrive in Los Angeles for the Academy Awards ceremony on Saturday but was barred entry on the grounds of “derogatory information”. “Derogatory infor-

mation” is an ambiguous term which could signify a variety of reasons for detention, from errors in documentation to possible terror connections. According to internal correspondence seen by the Associated Press, Turkish authorities detained the filmmaker last week, despite having a visa to travel to California for the ceremony. He was then expected to file a last minute passport-waiver. Homeland security spokeswoman Gillian Christensen commented to the Guardian, “A valid travel document is required for travel to the United States.” The 21-year-old cinematographer is nominated for the category Best Documentary Short for his

film The White Helmets, which looks at the efforts of rescue workers in the Syrian civil war. The film was also nominated for last year’s Nobel Peace Prize. The documentary is directed by Orlando von Einsiedel and produced by Joanna Natasegara. Kateeb is not the only filmmaker who has struggled to attend this year’s Oscars due to the Trump administration’s so-called ‘Muslim ban’. Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, who made the Oscar nominated film The Salesman, has chosen not to attend the 89th Academy Awards, even if an exception were made, due to the “in no way acceptable” ambiguity surrounding his entry into the US.

he first edition of Women Writers Festival brought together discussions on some significant issues around women under one roof here. The two-day festival that began on Friday is a result of a collaboration between SheThePeople.TV and the Vedica Scholars Programme for Women and is sponsored by Colors TV. The second day opened with panel of men titled “A Manel of Feminists: Why they must join the fight” with Prithvi Shergill, Raheel Khursheed, Sattvik Mishra and Tanmoy Goswami. The discussion highlighted gender imbalances and stereotypes that need to be fixed to throw up new possibilities for both men and women. Shifting the focus to safety, mobility and a city’s micro-culture, the next session was titled “Woman and the City,” moderated by Nishita Jha. Speakers Shweta Punj, Christina Fer-

nandez (RJ Chris), Shubhra Gupta, Meenu Vadera and Mala Bhargava shared their views on how cities can be converted into better places for women to live, work and play. The next session titled “Too cute for money?: Whip your personal finances into shape” moderated by Shreyasi Singh debunked the stereotypes that women don’t have a head to earn money. Speakers Monika Halan and Faye D’Souza talked about why there is a need for women to be financial savvy for their own dignity and independence. “The politics of sexual harassment: Fighting stigmas, stereotypes and status quo” was moderated by Shaili Chopra. A panel of journalists, lawyers and corporate policy makers- Nirupama Subramanian, Nikita Saxena, Malvika Rajkotia and Aparna Jain - shared their views on this explosive issue.

ather than doing oodles of separate stories on various announcements, we’ll filter them to bring you only the stuff that matters most, updating every Friday for your reading pleasure. This week we have the Range Rover Velar, EE Air Mast, Here One buds, Pro-Ject turntable and more. Range Rover Velar: This one isn’t technically out this week, but has been teased for the big unveiling next Wednesday. It’s a totally new Range Rover, the first since the iconic Evoque appeared, so worth a position in this week’s Hype list for sure. Little is known other than the fact this will sit between the Evoque and the Sport models suggesting a

perfect size and likely techfilled wonder machine. Here One ear buds: When it comes to truly wireless earphones you don’t get much more minimal than the Here One ear buds. These tiny ear dwellers offer noise cancelling smarts and include mics to allow you to take calls. These also allow you to access Siri or Google Now using the buds so you can control everything like playing and pausing music simply with your voice. Not bad and maybe even worthy of the £250 price. Pro-Ject VT-E BT turntable: The turntable from Pro-Ject, simply called VT-E BT, is special beyond just being a pathway to retro vinyl sound. This turntable works on

its side. The vertical turntable means you can wall mount the beauty and still have your vinyls spinning. Great for space saving, sure, but more of a design statement probably. Hence the £379 price. EE Air Mast: The mobile network EE has shown of its new Air Mast system to the UK as a way of better connecting everyone. This system uses helium filled balloons, drones and cars to offer signal in hard to reach areas. The result could mean better connected festivals, personal Wi-Fi while hiking a mountain and, of course, better data connected rural areas. All that and it’s coming later this year. Aston Martin AMRB 0001: Aston Martin will be showing of its car collaboration with Formula One’s Red Bull Advanced Technologies in its AM-RB 0001 at the Geneva Motor Show. This car uses a lightweight carbon fibre frame, two-seat setup and highrevving V12 engine for a 1:1 power to weight ratio - impressive indeed.

ctors Jodie Foster, Michael J Fox and Keegan-Michael Key last night attended a rally in support of immigration rights, weeks after the Trump administration imposed the so-called ‘Muslim ban’. The ‘United Voices’ rally was organised by the United Talent Agency in Beverly Hills. According to the organisers, the event was set up to “express the creative community’s support for freedom of speech and artistic expression and stand against policies of exclusion and division.” Speaking at the event, Fox called turning immigrants away “an assault on human dignity,” and recounted his own difficulties with applying for US citizenship two decades earlier. Foster told the crowd, “This year is a very different year, and it’s time to show up. It’s time to engage.” Security officials estimated that 1,500 people showed up at the event, which was held as an alternative to the agency’s usual Oscars party.

My dream has died, says Ranieri LO N D O N , F e b 2 5 (Agencies): Claudio Ranieri said his “dream died” when he was sacked by Leicester City nine months after leading them to the Premier League title against all the odds. The Italian was fired on Thursday with Leicester one place and one point above the relegation zone. “Yesterday my dream died,” Ranieri said in a statement on Friday. “After the euphoria of last season and being crowned Premier League champions all I dreamt of was staying with Leicester; the club I love for always. Sadly this was not to be.” Ranieri’s dismissal has been met with widespread shock. “The adventure was amazing and will live with me forever,” the 65-yearold manager said. “My heartfelt thanks to everybody at the club, everybody who was part of what we achieved, but mostly to the supporters. The Gunners also continue to pay off the financing of their 60,000seater Emirates Stadium home via a long-term fixedrate bond at a low interest rate, following their move from Highbury in 2006. “The financial results for the first half of the year are robust,” said Arsenal chairman Sir Chips Keswick. “As expected, increased Premier League broadcasting revenues have had a direct impact on player costs, both in terms of transfer prices and player wage demands. After reaching 48-2 in the 15th over, the hosts crumbled to defeat with medium pacer Dwaine Pretorius taking 3-5 in 5.2 overs. Victorious captain de Villiers said, “It was a great team performance. It was exactly what we asked for and emphasised before

the game.” “I put a lot of emphasis on us playing as a team today. I didn’t feel a lot of that kind of presence in the last game, so I really asked for that today and the guys delivered. I’m not sure how we got to 270 but we did and then we produced a great bowling performance.” During his knock, de Villiers became the 17th batsman to surpass 9,000 runs in the 50-over game, as well as the fastest in 205 innings. He also did so with a strike rate of exactly 100, and an average of 54 which far outstrips any other players on the list. The nearest in terms of average is MS Dhoni (50.96) and in terms of strike rate Adam Gilchrist (96.9). Defeated skipper Kane Williamson added, “We thought with the ball we did an okay job. I suppose going into that second innings, we needed to weather the storm a little bit. They got a lot of movement out of the surface which we weren’t able to do and they bowled superbly, so it was a tough day at the office for us.” The teams meet again in Hamilton on Wednesday, March 1st, when a win for South Africa would wrap up the series with an ODI to spare.

O’Keefe spins Aus to 333-run win in Pune

Australian bowler Steve O’Keefe celebrates the wicket of Indian batsman Virat Kohli during the first test match in Pune on Saturday. (PTI)

Pune, Feb 25 (PTI): Unheralded left-arm spinner Steve O’Keefe today grabbed a sensational match-haul of 12 wickets as a sloppy India slumped to a humiliating 333-run defeat inside three days in the first cricket Test against Australia here. Australia set a daunting target of 441, riding on skipper Steve Smith’s batting masterclass on a rank turner, and then skittled out the hapless hosts for a paltry 107 in 33.5 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series. The embarrassing

defeat also ended India’s unbeaten streak of 19 Tests with the last defeat coming against England at Kolkata in late 2012. The 32-year-old O’Keefe did the star turn once again with identical figures of 6/35 in both innings as India failed to even cross 110 in both innings. It was a total disaster f o r t h e Wo r l d N o. 1 Test team, who were s i m p ly o u t c l a s s e d i n all departments of the game and they further compounded their miseries with atrocious shot selection, shoddy fielding

and poor referrals. Skipper Virat Kohli had a rare bad Test match where he had scores 0 and 13 in both innings of the game. India collectively posted their lowest aggregate for a home Test match and ended up suffering their second biggest defeat at home in terms of runs. Kohli was out in the second innings shouldering arms to an angled delivery f r o m O ’ Ke e f e w h i c h dashed India’s minuscule hopes of a miraculous comeback. ‘100 per cent’ staying at Chelsea: Fabregas

Cesc Fabregas

Lo n d o n, F e b 2 5 (Agencies): Cesc Fabregas insists he “100 per cent” sees himself at Chelsea next year and has not had any thoughts of leaving the club this season. The 29-year-old’s future at Stamford Bridge has been subject to speculation after seemingly falling out of favour with head coach

Antonio Conte. He has started just five Premier League games this season and has largely been used as a substitute. However, the Spaniard told Sky Sports that he is relishing the challenge of trying to force his way into Conte’s starting XI on a regular basis. Asked if he sees himself at Chelsea next season, he said, “100 per cent. I am not thinking about anything else than challenging myself here. The situation from six months ago to now has changed massively.” “From the beginning it has been a big challenge and there are always rumours, you cannot stop that, but I don’t even care what people say. Not for one second did I want to leave. Sometimes it’s so easy, you don’t play two

games, you get frustrated and upset and want to move somewhere else, but for me it’s the opposite; I want to challenge myself.” “I know in my brain what I can do and if I am better than others or not. I know what I can bring to this team and by improving and listening to the manager and what he wants and doesn’t want, I know myself what I can give. I have been proving myself every time I have had a chance and I will not stop until I play every game which is what I want.” The impressive form of midfielders N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic has largely restricted Fabregas’ opportunities but he insists he is determined to prove himself.

reach double figures with only Cheteshwar Pujara showing some stomach for fight with a score of 31. After Smith’s superb 109 -- his 18th Test ton on a spiteful pitch --, there was no comeback for India as both openers KL Rahul and Murali Vijay made a mess of DRS when it was the umpire’s call. With demons of the turner working overtime on their minds, the Indian batsmen were unable to negotiate the turner which boomeranged on them. Brief scores: Australia 260 (Matt Renshaw 68, Mitchell Starc 61; Umesh Yadav 4-32) & 285 (Steven Smith 109; Ravichandran Ashwin 4-119) beat India 105 (KL Rahul 64; Steve O’Keefe 6-35) & 107 (Cheteshwar Pujara 31; Steve O’Keefe 6-35) by 333 runs.

‘Our worst batting display in last two years’

Indian skipper Virat Kohli on Saturday hardly minced words in criticising his team’s shambolic show in the 333-run loss to Australia, saying it was easily the side’s worst batting display in the last two years. India today slumped to a humiliating loss inside three days in the first match against Australia here to trail the four-Test

Indians disappoint on 2nd day of Shooting World Cup; China continue to dominate

Zoravar Singh Sandhu play in final trap (Men) in the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF).

New Delhi, Feb 25 (IANS): Indian shooters failed to yield any medals despite reaching the finals of two events on the second day of the ongoing World Cup even as China continued to dominate the medal tally winning three golds and two silver at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range here on Saturday.

While China sits atop the medal standings with five medals, Australia and Italy have picked up one gold each from the Shotgun Ranges. India is among nine out of 50 countries to be on the medal tally with Pooja Ghatkar’s opening day bronze being the lone bright spot. In the day’s first medal

event, the men’s 25M Rapid Fire Pistol, India’s Neeraj Kumar qualified for the sixman final with a qualifying round score of 579. I t wa s t h e yo u n g 22-year old Neeraj’s first World Cup final and the inexperience showed as he could not recover from a bad start to eventually finish sixth. The Chinese duo of Jiajie Lao and Junmin Li clinched the gold and silver respectively. While Jiajie shot a score of 31 in the finals to tie with Junmin, but eventually got the better of him 5-3 in the shoot-off which followed to separate them. Ruslan Lunev of Azerbaijan settled for the bronze, which was also his country’s first World Cup shooting medal ever. In the men’s Trap, India’s Zoravar Singh Sandhu made it to the Final round in four th position with a score of 118. In the six-man final round, he was joined by Italy’s Rio Olympic Silver medallist Giovanni Pellielo and Spain’s former world champion Alberto Fernandez among others. Zoravar fought hard but had to eventually settle for fourth position when he

finished tied at 28 points with Fernandez but had to bow out because of a lower qualifying rank. Had he hit his last shot, he would have been assured of a medal. The gold in the event went to Italy’s 21year old former Junior World Champion Simone D Ambrosio who shot 45 to push countryman Pellielo to second place with a score of 43. Spain’s Fernandez settled for the bronze shooting a score of 33 in the Final. Meanwhile, it turned out to be a historic occasion at the World Cup when the first ever mixed gender event was tested out at the start of the day. Each country could field two teams each and of the six teams, which qualified for the finals, both the Chinese teams made it through and eventually China 1 came out on top while Japan came second and China 2 came third. On Sunday, all eyes will be on former World number one and world record holder Heena Sidhu, who will compete i n wo m e n’s 1 0 M A i r Pistol and the experienced Sanjeev Rajput in men’s 50M Rifle 3 Positions.

series 0-1. “We got outplayed in this game. We got to take it on the chin, accept that they outplayed us. I t wa s o u r wo r s t batting display in the last two years. We were not good enough on any of the three days. It was the case of us not applying ourselves too well. We need to see what we did wrong,” said Kohli at the post match presentation. The Indian captain also agreed that the visitors exploited the conditions better. “They exploited it better than us. They put us under pressure throughout and deserved to win this game. Credit to them that they played better than us. “We’ve had two really bad sessions and to pull it back against a quality side is very difficult. But there are no excuses. Sometimes, you have to take your hat off and tell the opposition well done,” he said. The 28-year-old expressed confidence that his team will bounce back strongly. “I am sure we are going to bounce back strongly. It has been a good run for us (19-match unbeaten streak before this game). Good to see the crowd still supporting us,” said Kohli.

Brandon goal helps Aizawl edge Chennai

Brandon Vanlalremdika celebrates after scoring a goal against Chennai City FC during an I-League match on Saturday.

The result temporarily took Aizawl to the top of the league table ahead of East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, with both clubs yet to play their respective matches of the round. The hosts dominated possession in the first half, but failed to secure the lead in spite of a flurry of attacking moves. Away keeper Karanjit Singh was called into action several times, most notably

when Jayesh Rane’s corner kick was headed towards goal by Zohmingliana, which the keeper punched over. Karanjit had also blocked Al Amna’s free kick just minutes into the match. The first shot by Khalid Jamil’s team came in the 12th minute when Alfred Jaryan’s shot from outside the box was saved by Karanjit. Charles de Souza, who had scored in Chennai’s win in the reverse fixture, had a chance to put the visitors ahead from a counterattacking move. However, A i z aw l F C d e f e n d e r Kingsley Eze blocked the Brazilian forward. R. Laldanmawia was

denied by the woodwork early in the second half. But Brandon soon put the hosts in front, converting Kamo’s assist for his third goal of the campaign. Alfred Jaryan nearly doubled the lead with a long and powerful shot, but Karanjit Singh averted the danger. Chennai City FC tried to find the equaliser in the final stages, but the Aizawl defence remained impenetrable. Aizawl now have 23 points from eleven matches while Chennai are ninth with eight points from 11 matches. A i z aw l n ex t h o s t Mumbai FC on March 4, while Chennai host DSK Shivajians on March 5.

Mourinho facing Rooney dilemma Lo n d o n, F e b 2 5 (Agencies): Jose Mourinho won’t let his heart rule his head as the Manchester United boss ponders handing Wayne Rooney a start in EFL Cup final against Southampton on Sunday. Rooney, 31, announced on Thursday that he will remain at Old Trafford for the rest of the season after being linked with a lucrative move to the Chinese Super League. In response, Mourinho confirmed Rooney would be involved at Wembley for what could prove to be his final appearance at the famous stadium for United. Rooney has only started three games since before Christmas, all of them in the FA Cup or League Cup, and played just 45 minutes

Thiem cruises into semis of Rio Open Rio de Janeiro, Feb 25 (IANS): Second-seeded Austrian Dominic Thiem cruised into the semi-finals of the Rio Open tennis championships with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman. The 5-foot-7 Schwartzman on Friday held serve just three times in nine opportunities against Thiem, who relied on his powerful ground strokes to control the action on the red clay at the Jockey Club Brasileiro, reports Efe. Thiem only put 51 percent of his first serves in play, but he made up for it by winning nearly 60 percent of his second-serve points over the course of the one hour, 15-minute quarter-final match. With the win, Thiem remained on course for his eighth career title and sixth on clay; the eighth-ranked Austrian will next take on fifth-seeded Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas, a 6-2, 6-3 winner Friday over Argentine qualifier Nicolas Kicker. The top seed at this year’s Rio Open, Japanese world No. 5 Kei Nishikori, was eliminated in the first round by Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci.

in February, due to injury. Mourinho has not ruled out naming his club captain in his starting line-up this weekend, although he will not let sentiment cloud his decision. “Only the best 11 players,” said Mourinho, on his team selection for the Wembley showpiece. “We win all together. It doesn’t matter if you play or didn’t play, if you play a lot or don’t play much. I go for the best possible team.” “I have to make a decision. You know that we normally play two different systems. Sometimes we play with two midfield players and a ‘Number 10’, if you want to call it that. A final is a special match and he’s an option for me.” The absence of in-form Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who

Jose Mourinho and Wayne Rooney.

picked up an injury in the midweek Europa League victory at St Etienne, has improved Rooney’s chances of adding to the League Cups he won with United in 2006 and 2010. Mourinho, meanwhile, can join legendary managers Alex Ferguson and Brian Clough in winning the

League Cup for a record fourth time if he is successful against Southampton. And although the Portuguese admits he has not found many players in his career who share his fanatical will to win, a number of United’s stars are beginning to impress him in that area.

Dubai loss ends Kerber number one dream D UB A I , F e b 2 5 (Agencies): Angelique Kerber lost the chance to return to the top of the WTA rankings, after losing 6-3, 7-6 (7/3) to Elina Svitolina on Friday in the Dubai Tennis Championships semi-finals. Had Kerber won the tournament, she would have retaken the world number one spot she held after winning the US Open in September, until Serena Williams wrestled it back in claiming Australian Open glory last month. But Kerber, winner of two Grand Slams in 2016, fell victim to back problems during her match with Svitolina, who has now won her last three meetings with the 29-yearold German. The top seed produced eight double-faults and left the court for medical treatment when a set and a break down. Her return produced some momentarily inspiring tennis, with two bouts of light rain adding to complications. Wozniacki lost to Czech Karolina Pliskova in the Doha final last weekend. “It’s been a pretty good couple of weeks for me, I’m very happy with how I have been playing. Very happy how I have managed to get

through these two weeks,” Wozniacki said. “It’s been very tiring mentally. The fact that I have just been staying in there and keep grinding, I’m kind of proud of that. “She definitely was a tricky opponent. I knew going into it that she was going to be difficult. She mixes the pace up. She really tries to break your rhythm. I was really pleased with how I was playing. I tried to stay aggressive and tried to mix it up, as well.”
