KOHIMA, FEB 22 (NPN): After being sworn-in as chief minister earlier at Raj Bhavan, 81-year old veteran regional politician Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu assured that his government would create a public platform so that every Naga is given the opportunity to discuss and express views on crucial issues so that together with various leaders, they can work out solution to problems. Nagaland chief minister Dr. Liezietsu said this at a reception accorded to him and the new team at the state Banquet Hall, Wednesday.
Dr. SC Jamir fetes Dr. Shürhozelie
Referring to recent shutdown of government offices, the chief minister lamented at the colossal loss because of the days lost but admitted that “it was our fault, the blame has to be shared.” Dr. Shürhozelie urged upon every Naga to make peace, so that the fruits could be enjoyed by future generations, saying “forgiveness is the virtue and essence of peace.” He also acknowledged contributions by former chief minister, T.R. Zeliang on the “extra ordinary” step in sacrificing the chair. He also lauded Mrs. Zeliang for the undeterred support
to her husband during the recent crisis. Dr. Shürhozelie also urged the party rank and file to remain steadfast and to bury all differences in order to strengthen NPF party. He further thanked everyone for reposing their faith in him and assured to do his best to fulfil the dreams and desires of all.
‘Induction of ministers, a temporary arrangement’
The chief minister also acknowledged that ministry formation was always a challenge as it was difficult to satisfy everybody. In a reference that drew
intense interest, the chief minister assured those who did not find a place in his ministry that it was a “temporary arrangement”. This opened a window of hope that there could be a reshuffle in the coming days. He said all legislators that their services would be utilised irrespective of their status in order to help the government achieve the goal to bring peace and development. “Be it cabinet ministers, advisers or parliamentary secretaries, it does not
matter since everyone would be working as a team,” he reiterated. Without elaborating much, Dr. Shürhozelie further said he had come for six months as CM and that time would speak since 11 months were left to go for the next election. O n T h u r s d ay, D r. DIMAPUR, FEB 22 (NPN): ACAUT Nagaland has reminded the newly sworn-in chief minister Dr. Shürhozelie not to act like the previous government which brushed aside apprehensions of tribe bodies on possible dilution of Article 371A as it indicated that no legislator would listen to people’s voices so long their mandate was derived not from popular votes but from purchased votes. ACAUT through its Media Cell also reminded the government under the new chief minster Dr. Shürhozelie not to be arrogant as the previous government and not to repeat denial of basic rights to people such as non-payment of salaries, non-compliance with Mid-Day Meal Scheme or diversion of PDS, rice, SK Oil, Sugar etc. ACAUT also asked

NPCC slams Dr. Shürho, NPF DIMAPUR, FEB 22 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has slammed Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu even as he took oath as chief minister of Nagaland on Wednesday. In a rather sarcastic tone, the NPCC through its media cell congratulated Shürhozelie on his swearing in as the chief minister “after successfully engineering instability to his advantage.” The congress party alleged that since 2003, he has been treating NPF as his “personal fiefdom”. NPCC said it came as no surprise that he had “cleverly manoeuvred himself in outwitting other contenders to become the chief minister in the midst of instability arising out of their blatant disregard towards the voices and sentiments of the people.” (Cont’d on p-8)
Protestors demand NTC on Rajnath’s statement GoI to disclose Aug 3 DIMAPUR, FEB 22 (NPN): Drawing attention to statement made by Union Home Minister Rajnath framework agreement the Singh in Manipur, clarifying that there was not a word Correspondent
IMPHAL, FEB 22: Despite Union Home minister Rajnath Singh’s assurance and clarification that Manipur’s territorial integrity would be protected and that there was no mention of Manipur state in the August 3, 2015 ‘Framework Agreement’ signed between Centre and NSCN (I-M), hundreds of protestors led by students and womenfolk stormed the Imphal Raj Bhavan on Wednesday, as part of its ongoing campaign initiated by All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) The protestors who were shouting slogans, demanded that the Governor press Centre to make public the framework agreement. The agitators said they were apprehensive of a hidden agenda in the framework agreement, as the Centre continued to remain silent without making the public the agreement.
mentioned about Manipur in the August 3, 2015 Framework Agreement signed between government of India and NSNC (I-M) and that Manipur’s territorial integrity would be protected at any cost, the Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) on Wednesday said Singh’s statement implied that whatever were the provisions contained in the agreement were confined only to the state of Nagaland. NTC media cell further said Rajnath had also claimed that none of Nagaland’s neighbouring state’s territory would be disturbed. In this regard, NTC expressed surprise that even after 19 months since the signing of framework, Nagas of Nagaland in particular did not know an iota of the contents. NTC said what it knew was that the two most important principle issues-- sovereignty and integration – were left out and that the settlement was within the ambit of the constitution of India. Further, NTC also made it clear to Centre and NSCN (I-M) in particular and Nagas in general that the indigenous Nagas of Nagaland were not in a position to accept such agreement without their knowledge and consent. “We are the chief stake-holders of State of Nagaland and we are qualified and legitimate enough to handle and protect the interest of Nagaland,” NTC said. In the light of the above, the NTC reiterated its earlier stand on Naga Political solution and vehemently objected to “a non-stakeholder handling the destiny of the Nagas of Nagaland without taking the indigenous citizens of Nagaland into confidence.” NTC said it rather considered such attempt as “outside interference.” K Y M C

Dimapur Tsungiki Ekhung condemns firing incident
ZSUD reacts to recent events in Nagaland dictated by power politics.” Whereas Nagas claim to be an egalitarian society without any socio-religious stratification, ZSUD said to the world outside Naga society has emerged as a “highly intolerant patriarchal community with no qualms about suppressing the rights of women in order to defend our customary laws and right to self-determination.” Now that ULB election has been declared null and void and chief minister T.R. Zeliang resigned, ZSUD said that “gender issue” must be addressed at the earliest. The student body also strongly opined that Naga women must be empowered with adequate representations in ULB/all public offices in consonance with local customary laws and practices. “To build a progressive and inclusive society every man must respect Naga women’s political rights. Naga women should be given opportunities which have been denied for many generations,” stated the
press release. ZSUD also expressed deep concern over the “attempt during the protests to polarize and stratify Naga society on the parameters of major tribes and minor tribes” saying that such politics defeats Naga unity, progress and the attempt to come of the problem of “tribalism”. The student body also expressed sadness in learning that JCC and NTAC had reportedly “questioned the integrity of Zeliangrong by publicly stating that they know the existence of Zeliang but not Zeliangrong.” In this regard, ZSUD pointed out that Zeliangrong people are represented in the Naga Hoho, Naga Students’ Federation and Naga Mothers Association and the Naga Political Groups under the banner of Zeliangrong transcending the political and territorial boundaries of colonial and post-colonial order. Stating that the benefit Nagaland is entitled to at the moment is the result of collective efforts of all Nagas including Zeliangong
people, ZSUD therefore said Zeliangrong people as a part of the political struggle are also stakeholders in the progress and development of the state. The student body also expressed extreme anguish and pain over the “attack innocent Zeliangrong people living in Dimapur and targeting chief minister’s private residence and the mass violence that erupted in the name of safeguarding Naga customary laws.” It said this “recent conspiracy” against TR Zeliang and Zeliangrong community has hurt the sentiment of the tribe living in three different States of Manipur, Nagaland and Assam. ZSUD then said that the issue in Nagaland State should have been against the government’s decision to carry on with the ULB election. However, it claimed that the unfolding of events was directed “intentionally towards one minority tribe and the leader” which it the student body termed as “extremely sad and intolerable”. The student body also

Arunachal Pradesh to increase pension for differently abled
SC to hear former Kalikho Pul’s wife’s plea today NEW DELHI, FEB 22 (AGENCIES): In a fresh twist to the ongoing political controversy around the alleged suicide note of former Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Kalikho Pul, the Supreme Court has decided to give an open court hearing tomorrow to his wife’s plea seeking CBI probe. The sixty-page long note names four judges of the Supreme Court and levels serious corruption allegations against them. The authenticity of the claims and the allegations made is disputed, however, Pul’s wife has contended that the state police did a shoddy investigation and did not look into all the aspects. Speaking to India Today, Pul’s wife expressed hope that the judiciary will take action and justice will be served. “It is going to be a tough long battle, but I am determined to take it forward,” said Dangwimsai Pul, wife of the former CM Kalikho Pul. Earlier, the CJI Justice Khehar had written a letter to her informing that the court will take the required action. However, sources indicate that the letter was sent to the Arunachal Pradesh address and the wife received a call from the SC registry today evening. Speaking to India Today, lawyer and activist Prashant Bhushan had expressed an opinion that the allegations levelled in the letter are serious and a probe must be done. He further went on to say that after the judgment in the Sahara Birla diary case which denied any investigation based on loose sheets of paper, a poor precedent had been set which could stand in the way of investigation.

NEEPCO has so far invested Rs 1,100 crore on the project.” After the project work started, the locals launched a massive agitation due to submerging of their standing crops and farmland under the reservoir that would be created. “The project work came to total stop on June 9, 2004, due to the stir launched by the newlyformed Tuirial Crop Compensation Claimant Association, claiming compensation for the standing crops in the riverine reserve forest,” Bora said. “After the Union Power Ministry, NEEPCO and the Mizoram government jointly negotiated with the agitators, work resumed in 2011 after seven years of stoppage.” Till
June 2004, 30 per cent of the project work and 95 per cent of the design and engineering work had been completed. The NEEPCO official said that though the company has invested Rs 1,100 crore so far due to delay and price escalation, the original sanctioned cost was Rs 369 crore. With a population of just 1.1 million, Mizoram’s current demand of electricity is only 85 MW and this is being met by state’s mini power projects and availability of its share of power from central sector projects. Thus, the additional power is likely to be supplied to the regional or national grid. Sikkim is self-sufficient at 95.70 MW while

The bench also said the government should state, by way of further affidavit, the progress made on the aspects related to infrastructure for the judiciary in the districts where separation has taken place as also on the requirements for effective separation of judiciary in the remaining districts.

S h i l lo n g, F e b 2 2 (NPN): The Meghalaya High Court (HC) has directed the state government to speed up the complete separation of judiciary from executive. It also asked the Mukul Sangma-led government to assess the status of undertrial prisoners and functioning of the directorate of prosecution. Taking up a pending PIL on these issues, the division bench of the High Court comprising of Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice Ved Prakash Vaish expressed dissatisfaction over the delay in delinking judiciary from executive and said that the officers concerned should
have acted promptly without the intervention of the Court. “We would expect that the shortcomings on the part of the government as noticed earlier would not resurface and the matter shall be attended at with requisite seriousness so as to ensure substantial progress and concrete results,” the Court said. On under-trial prisoners (UTPs) languishing in jail without remand orders, the bench wanted the State Legal Services Authority to place on record the latest reports relating to UTPs in the entire state while indicating the areas of shortcomings on the part of the government. The Court also took up streamlining the prosecution, including setting up of the Directorate of Pros-

JNU redux at DU: Student groups clash
New Delhi, Feb 22 (IANS): Violent clashes broke out between two student groups outside Ramjas College here on Wednesday, leaving many injured as police rounded up dozens of protesters, a day after the ABVP forced the suspension of an event to be addressed by JNU student Umar Khalid, jailed last year for sedition. At least a dozen students and a teacher were wounded after a group demonstrated against the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) -- the RSS student wing that dominates the students union in Delhi University. Some of them tried to march to the nearby Maurice Nagar Police Station but were stopped by a group of ABVP students. Police blocked the road from Patel Chest to the police station with barricades amid slogan shouting by the two warring groups. The ABVP side chanted “Bharat Mata ki jai” and “Desh ke gaddaron ko, jootey maaro...” The other side countered with “ABVP ki gundagardi nahi chalegi, nahi chalegi”. Some students were locked inside the college as All India Students Association (AISA) activists alleged ABVP members surrounded them and didn’t allow the march. “We were attacked, police did nothing. They hurled bricks at us,” tweeted Shehla Rashid, who was also invited for the two-day seminar and was at Ramjas during the clashes. She alleged that the ABVP activists, with the help of police, “unleashed br utal violence on our peaceful march”. The ABVP, however, denied resorting to violence or forcing the college to cancel the invite to Khalid and Rashid. “There was no violence. The ABVP always promotes discussion. But you need to maintain decorum...The college students and teachers didn’t want Khalid,” ABVP leader Abhishek Verma said. Those wounded in the clashes included English
Department teacher Prasanta Chakravarty, who was admitted to Hindu Rao hospital with minor injuries. Also admitted were three students. A.K. Goyal, medical superintendent at the hospital, said they had suffered some bruises but there was “nothing serious”. Students threatened to camp outside the police station as police refused to file an FIR against ABVP for alleged violence on Tuesday and Wednesday. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Esha Pandey told IANS that “adequate deployment” of police was made outside the college to stop the situation getting out of control after clashes “between two student outfits over their
HC refuses interim relief to DMK on petition C h e i nna i , F EB 2 2 (AGENCIES): The Madras High Court on Wednesday refused to grant any interim relief to the DMK, which has challenged the manner in which voting was conducted on the Motion of Confidence moved by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami in the Assembly on Saturday last, and suggested to Leader of the Opposition and party working president M.K. Stalin to produce video recordings to substantiate his case. After two days of persuasion by Stalin’s counsel R. Shanmugasundaram, seeking an urgent hearing of his PIL petition to declare the decision of the Assembly Speaker in accepting the vote of confidence moved by the Chief Minister as illegal, null and void, the court finally took up the matter for hearing on Wednesday. The First Bench of Acting Chief Justice Hulu-
MK Stalin vadi G. Ramesh and Justice R. Mahadevan wondered what made the DMK to move such a plea when the issue was only between the Chief Minister and the former Chief Minister, O. Panneerselvam. It questioned the petitioner as to in what way he was aggrieved by the issue. To t h i s, S h a n mu gasundaram said, “The petitioner who is also the Leader of the Opposition was stopped near the War Memorial and made to walk all the way to the Assembly. Also all the DMK members, including the
petitioner, were illegally evicted from the House when they sought a secret ballot.” Senior Counsel N.L. Rajah, who appeared for the Advocates Forum for Social Justice, another petitioner seeking similar relief, submitted that the fact that all the AIADMK (Sasikala) MLAs were escorted to the Assembly in buses was a clear indication that they were under ‘illegal detention’. “Moreover, there is an FIR pending against Palaniswami in connection with illegal detention of MLAs,” he said. Unconvinced, the Bench sought to know whether the petitioners have any video recording to prove their allegations. To this, Shanmugasundaram said that only a particular private channel was allowed to record the proceedings and sought the court to pass a direction to the Assembly Secretary to produce the recordings.
ideologies”. “We have controlled the situation. We will take all necessary action after investigating the matter...and maintain peaceful ambience (in the college) for students,” Pandey said, adding no FIR had been registered till Wednesday evening. Saikat Ghosh, a Delhi University teacher, said the situation was “completely chaotic inside the college which was locked from inside by the ABVP students”. “Many students had to escort their teachers inside against the feral and abusive mob. This is totally unpardonable. How can police side with these goons,” Ghosh said. On Tuesday, a large group of ABVP students disrupted the first session
of the two-day seminar at Ramjas College on Indian tribals -- a subject on which Khalid is writing his PhD thesis. The ABVP raised slogans denouncing Khalid as an “anti-national” and forced the organisers to suspend the day’s event on Tuesday. Khalid was among the students booked for sedition for allegedly raising antinational slogans at the JNU on February 9 last year. The violence at the college triggered sharp reaction from the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi told reporters that the “climate of intolerance is expanding day by day after the arrival of the BJP government. “Ramjas is just an example. It is happening across the country,” Singhvi said. AAP spokesperson Ashutosh said: The “ABVP is used by (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi to kill every educational (institution)... from JNU to Ramjas... Police is conniving”. Amnesty International’s India chapter head Aakar Patel said: “Universities are supposed to be safe spaces for debate and discussion. But the events at Ramjas College are a shameful reminder of how intimidation and threats continue to restrict free speech on university campuses.”

AgustaWestland scam: Delhi High Court adjourns CBI’s plea NEW DELHI, FEB 22 (AGENCIES): The Delhi High Court on Wednesday adjourned the hearing on the plea filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for cancelling the bail granted to former Indian Air Force (IAF) chief SP Tyagi and others till March 15, in the VVIP AgustaWestland chopper scam. The High Court had earlier on February 7 deferred the hearing on the same till February 22. A CBI special court had on January 4 granted bail to the former air chief ’s
SP Tyagi cousin Sanjeev Tyagi and his lawyer Gautam Khaitan in this case. The court had then directed Sanjeev and Khaitan not to contact any
witnesses and not to leave the National Capital Region (NCR) without prior permission. The court had earlier granted bail to the 72-yearold former air chief, saying that CBI has failed to state the alleged bribe amount and when it was paid. The former air chief, who retired in 2007, his cousin Sanjeev and Khaitan were arrested on December 9, 2016, by the CBI in connection with the case which relates to procurement of 12 VVIP choppers from UK-based firm during the UPA-2 regime.

In vain
gainst Corruption And Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) Nagaland has again come up with another explosive information obtained through RTI which exposed how several candidates were appointed in the Nagaland Industrial Development Corporation Ltd, through questionable or dubious means. In other words, the issue raised by ACAUT involved the backdoor appointments in the Corporation. In its latest revelation issued to the local newspapers on Tuesday, ACAUT, citing RTI replies has revealed that NIDC had recruited/appointed 11 persons to various posts such as – two posts of Deputy General Manager; two posts of Assistant Manager; five posts of JA-cum-Computer Assistant; one post of Accounts Assistant-cum-Computer Assistant; one post of Steno Grade III and one post of peon. ACAUT revealed that the appointments were done without following the due process of advertisement in newspapers and so what was being questioned was how were candidates called for the so-called interview and how were candidates ultimately selected when there was no interview? In the light of what was described as arbitrary appointments, ACAUT has slammed the backdoor appointments because the promotional avenues of in-service employees in the NIDC has been shut because of it was discriminatory and unfair. ACAUT has of course, demanded that all those appointed to various posts backdoor, should be terminated and the vacancies filled up through the due transparent process. ACAUT had exposed corruption in almost every government branch during the past few years. However it is also very surprising that all these exposes have not been carried to their logical and legal conclusion. Despite the issue of illegal/ unauthorised/backdoor appointments being a very serious one and for which, the NSF, in the past and ACAUT Nagaland had demanded accountability be fixed on those guilty of “robbing” or “depriving” thousands of genuine and meritorious youths of their future; sadly it appears that the issue will remain in the twilight zone of Nagaland’s dubious reputation and only to be picked up somewhere at some time in the future by some organisation for whatever reason or compulsion. In addition the are many reports of fake certificates or degrees including age tampering but no action has been taken. There has been very little concern over such issues which have been brought to public domain. A report made available with the media in the recent past showed how a clear case of how age tampering has been studiously ignored. It may be pertinent to note that when the state government passed the Nagaland Retirement Act in 2009, it was supposed to affect all state government departments on the issue of retirement. By this any government employee who has completed 35 years of service or attained 60 year of age would be deemed as having attained superannuation. According to reports, the Act was to affect more than 3000 government employees and automatically open avenues for employment for the educated unemployed youths. Besides backdoor employment, even what is meant for the poorest of the poor under MGNREGA that provides 100 days guaranteed employment during lean season , is also siphoned off. This was alleged by NPCC which cited that during July 2016, MGNREGA funds to the tune of Rs.470 crore were released sufficient to enable payment of 70 man day wages but instead, the money had been “snatched from the hands of helpless villagers.” So much has been written over backdoor appointments but nothing has been done.
DailyDevotion The Discipline of Spiritual Perseverance Be still, and know that I am God… —Psalm 46:10 Perseverance is more than endurance. It is endurance combined with absolute assurance and certainty that what we are looking for is going to happen. Perseverance means more than just hanging on, which may be only exposing our fear of letting go and falling. Perseverance is our supreme effort of refusing to believe that our hero is going to be conquered. Our greatest fear is not that we will be damned, but that somehow Jesus Christ will be defeated. Also, our fear is that the very things our Lord stood for— love, justice, forgiveness, and kindness among men— will not win out in the end and will represent an unattainable goal for us. Then there is the call to spiritual perseverance. A call not to hang on and do nothing, but to work deliberately, knowing with certainty that God will never be defeated. If our hopes seem to be experiencing disappointment right now, it simply means that they are being purified. Every hope or dream of the human mind will be fulfilled if it is noble and of God. But one of the greatest stresses in life is the stress of waiting for God. He brings fulfillment, “because you have kept My command to persevere…” (Revelation 3:10). Continue to persevere spiritually.

Racial discrimination returns to UK
t’s sheer racialism. Four British nationals of Pakistan origin committed a crime of sexual exploitation and were sentenced to imprisonment. But the judge McClosky, in his own wisdom, said that after serving the sentence they should be sent back to country of their origin. I wonder if this would have happened to a white man, especially to Europeans. The judge without demur said in his verdict that the convicts’ nationality should be stripped. The ruling by an immigration tribunal subsequently also cleared the way for the Pakistanis to be removed from Britain. They had acquired British citizenship by naturalisation. According to the Dawn from Karachi, they were among nine men of Pakistani and Afghan descent convicted of luring girls as young as 13 into sexual encounters using alcohol and drugs. They were based in Rochdale, in northern England. Five of the dual nationals deprived of their citizenship were British Pakistanis, while two were of dual British and Sudanese nationality. The remain-
ing six were Australian, Iraqi, Russian, Egyptian and Lebanese dual nationals. To this date 10 of the orders have been appealed against. Among the four facing deportation is ringleader Shabir Ahmed, sentenced in 2012 to 22 years in jail. The other three are Adil Khan, Qari Abdul Rauf and Abdul Aziz. Ahmed, who was convicted of rape as well as other charges, remains in custody, while the other three men have been released on licence. Khan, Rauf and Aziz were convicted on conspiracy and trafficking for sexual exploitation charges. Aziz was not convicted of having sexual intercourse with any child. The judge at the hearing in the upper tribunal of the Immigration and Asylum Chamber described their crimes as “shocking, brutal and repulsive”. His decision rejected claims concerning human rights laws and a complaint of “disproportionate interference” with their rights. The case centres on a decision by Prime Minister Theresa May, when she was home secretary, to take away the men’s citizenship
“for the public good”. The “as soon as possible” saynumber of people subject to ing “foreign-born criminals the power, under which the should not be able to hide Home Secretary can deprive behind human rights laws dual nationals of their Brit- to avoid deportation.” This ish citizenship if it is deemed is somewhat similar to what to be in the public interest, President Donald Trump did has increased since the co- soon after taking over. The very discussion
on stripping nationality of a country’s citizen is ominous. By declaring anybody antinational you can send him back to the country he once belonged. This will be very harsh on journalists and authors. They utilize the freedom of expression to run down their own country or politicians. This is happening in India itself. Take the case of an online editor of a publication is facing the wrath of the Election Commission after the newspaper published the exit poll results after the first phase of election in UP. As many as 15 FIRs have been filed against the publication. Some time ago, even the owner of a national channel was arraigned by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry when he refused to tender an apology for what the channel had broadcast. Some time ago, the ministry also defended the censorship. The minister explained that government had only one channel while the private sector had several. Therefore, the ministry had every right to use the official channel to put across the
government point o view. I wish that this prerogative is used to describe the plight of dalits or the minorities. But since the upper casts dominate the media, there is hardly any mention of the atrocities committed against the marginalized. When it comes to India, at least there is no racialism. The attackers on the Parliament House and on Mumbai were tried by various courts and eventually sentenced. The convicts were Muslims. The emphasis on religion is itself bad. Saudi Arabia which is a Muslim country prefers Muslims to be in their midst. It is another story that they prefer Indian Muslims to Pakistani Muslims. Even the policeman there lets go the Muslims from India for any traffic violation while the Pakistanis are singled out for punishment. The UK government will be blamed for racial discrimination if the order of the judge to send the convicts to their country of origin. Yet it must be admitted that racial discrimination is increasingly taking the centre of stage in the UK.

The road ahead
he Naga are an ancient people, but new to the modern world and its concepts, faiths and ideologies. Our Educated think that education is the means to obtaining a government job; not an opening up of one’s intellectual capabilities to the uncountable ways to make a good living without being corrupt. Our Legislators run for elected office without any clue that their purpose is to make laws that benefit and regulate society; not to jostle for ministerial positions. And the few that occupy ministerial offices see it, not as an opportunity to build up society; but a chance to suck their various departments dry. Our Government Servants think that they are Government Owners. Our Theologians serve The Unholy Trinity of Men, Money and Mammon instead of serving The Holy Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit; and our Freedom Fighters seek sovereignty under the banner of Socialism; in a land where everybody owns something, no matter how little, and every inch of land and every piece of property has an owner. We are a people displaying all the Forms of Modernity without an iota of Substance behind the various forms we seek to project. The past few months have seen events unfold; unlike anything in the history of Nagaland. And I am of the firm belief that it will shape how The Naga advance into the future. Allow me a brief recap:1. All tribes of Nagaland united under the banner of the Joint Coordination Committee against Issues and Policies of the State Government. For the first time ever, Nagas were not divided along Tribal Lines, but United on Issues. It was The People versus The Government. Despite the countless endeavours of many, to split The People along village, range, tribal, political and personal lines; we endured; and still hope to endure and overcome the evil machinations of those that would seek to destroy us in their blind greed. 2. Our Legislators, once again, showed that their sole purpose was hanging on to their precarious grasp on power. Their game of Musical Chairs has ended with the Puppet and The Puppeteer, exchanging places; and the remaining Marionettes salivating in the background; while worrying their hairs grey about their possibility of snagging a ministerial or parliamentary secretarial post. At the time of the writing of this letter, the Cabinet is yet to be formed, but we need not wait with baited breath.
It will be some combination or the other of the self-same, self-serving spineless parasites that We, in our greed and stupidity, have elected to lead us. It is no longer an issue of, “Old wine in new bottles.” Whatever Wine there was, if there was any to begin with, has turned to Vinegar; we are merely watching them pour the Vinegar from bottle to bottle. 3. The Naga Hoho and N.S.F.; once considered the torchbearers of Naga Society have proved, once again, that they serve themselves and others rather than the people they claim to represent. They can be made redundant in an instant by any organisation or group of people that genuinely seeks to serve the real interests of the people of Nagaland; as happened with the Nagaland Tribes Action Committee suddenly springing up to spearhead the people’s movement; and the Dimapur Sumi Students’ Union and the Autorickshaw Drivers of Wokha ensuring that students appearing for their board exams made it to their centres. So, where does that leave the ordinary Naga, men and women? I ask you to be of good heart; for out of chaos grows order. And it is incumbent upon the survivors to ensure that such things do not occur again. I am sick of the whiners of our society grumbling; in the privacy of their homes and the freedom of the internet, without ever suggesting any means of overcoming the numerous problems we face. So, to give them more reason to complain and whine, I venture the following suggestions:1. I request the Good Women of Nagaland to be patient for a while. Let us first examine the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 minutely for any more mines it may contain; and whether we should accept M.E.S.A. with all its implications. And I’m certain that together with the Tribal Hohos, you will arrive at an amicable solution with the Magical 33% that some of you so crave. 2 . T h e J. C . C a n d N.T.A.C. have done a sterling job in keeping the various Tribes of Nagaland together during this crisis. With the E.N.P.O. and C.N.T.C. already separated from the Naga Hoho; we need a permanent coordinating committee/ body to ensure smooth lines of communication between the various Tribes of Nagaland on issues pertaining to the State of Nagaland. The Naga Hoho and N.S.F. have developed an alarming habit of rising up in arms on issues concerning Manipur and keeping silent on those affecting Nagaland. So,
I feel that the Tribal Organisations of Nagaland should form a body of representatives whose sole purpose will be coordinating the Tribal Organisations of Nagaland on issues that affect either one, some or all of the Tribes of Nagaland. Not an umbrella organisation of the Tribes of Nagaland, but a facilitator for the common aims of the Tribes of Nagaland. 3. The Tribal Students’ Unions/Associations of Nagaland too, should also form a body on similar lines to the above suggestion; to ensure that the interests of the Students of Nagaland are served. And I would advise all Student Leaders across all Tribes of Nagaland to work for the welfare of the students. Do not see your positions as spring boards into politics. Your deeds will reflect in the respect you gain from students and parents alike. Until the day Nagaland sees a New Breed of people seeking electoral office; people who aim to serve the people, not lord over them; people who understand that their purpose is to legislate and govern, not to grab everything in sight; people who understand that their Good Works and Deeds will last longer than their ill-gotten wealth; we have to make do with the corrupt lot we have now, and in the foreseeable future. The different parties and ideologies are just eyewash. I guarantee you that even if all the Voters of Nagaland refuse to take a single Paisa for their votes; and we conduct the cleanest election in the history of the world; those elected will carry on in their rutted path of corruption and nepotism. So, the road ahead is now clear; the Tribal Organisations must take on the role of Watchdog for Nagaland and its Peoples. We have to realise, and educate our people to the fact that catering to the benefit of a few from our family/ clan/tribe, at the expense of others, will eventually lead to the destruction of all. We are no longer living in independence in our villages; we have formed towns and a State; a State for all Tribes and People of Nagaland, and no single person, party or Tribe should be allowed to gain or advance at the expense of the other people or Tribes of the State. The future of Nagaland does not lie in a Power Struggle between elected and appointed Government Officials versus Civil Societies; but a Balance of Power between the Governors and the Governed. Where even the least has the very right to say or choose his own path except end his own life, as the rule of law never allows one to take neither his life, nor others life, if it don’t aim to breach ones rights. Looking at our present society at last I see the seeds of unity among our Nagas which was long forgotten among tribes and that no Government should forget that it is People’s Govenment ‘and no individual interest But work for Public interest. Principle of democracy
Former American President Abraham Lincoln has clearly stated Democracy as the Government OF the People, BY the People and for THE People. Which means Democracy works on propel of People’s Will. However, Revolution takes its phase when Democracy reciprocate as Government OFF the people, BUY the people and for the FEW people. JUST Society is a Peaceful society; Peace prevails when fair and reasonable justice is delivered to the people. To safeguard the Rights of the people and the Government; and to achieve the just society with democratic principle, the Constitution of India has enshrined “Freedom of Speech and Expression” in Fundamental Right to its citizens with reasonable restrictions/limitations as (i) Security of Nation, (ii) Sovereignty of Nation, (iii) Public Order, (iv) Morality, (v) Contempt of Court etc...... Logically, Freedom of Speech and Expression cannot be used as a device for delivering a final judgement/justice by any citizen prior to the investigation/examination by experts and delivered by court/judiciary. Though the system of govern is democratic in nature (Will of the people) but delivering a justice is the duty of judges/judiciary with requisite qualification in respective fields. But citizens using freedom of speech and expression beyond its restriction and delivering/declaring its final judgement on any socio-eco or political issue prior to establishment of concerned court is considered as undemocratic and unjust society. Therefore, any citizen or groups utilizing freedom of speech and expression for declaring or pronouncing its final decision claiming general Will/voice of the people prior to investigating bureau over certain issue/conflict is absolutely/completely misuse of Fundamental Right and it is against the principle of DEMOCRACY. In vain
gainst Corruption And Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) Nagaland has again come up with another explosive information obtained through RTI which exposed how several candidates were appointed in the Nagaland Industrial Development Corporation Ltd, through questionable or dubious means.

2. ATM guard posted there, he made an official complaint to the police which sent a sub-inspector to the ATM. The sub-inspector withdrew another 2,000 rupee note from the ATM which too turned out to be similarly fake, after which the police registered an FIR. A case of cheating and related offences has been filed against unknown persons under sections 489-b, 489-e and 420 of the Indian Penal Code, the police said. Experts say it is possible for an ATM to dispense even a simple sheet of paper if its size is the same as the currency notes.

He has reduced the whole nation into a laughing stock,” the Aam Aadmi Party leader tweeted. Rohit, a customer care executive who got the notes, reported the matter to the police. In his complaint, Rohit said he tried to withdraw Rs 8,000 at around 7.45 p.m. from the ATM at the T-Point at Tigri in Sangam Vihar but all the four 2,000 rupee notes turned out to be fake. It said he was therefore equally responsible for the sorry state of affairs plaguing the state. The congress maintained that the general instability brought about by NPF power struggle especially during the last three years has completely disrupted issues of public importance, which the government ought to have addressed. NPCC also alleged that frequent change of leadership by the NPF was “just a clever ploy” to remain glued to the chairs. It underlined that the problems that have engulfed the state would never be solved and would rather go beyond redemption if NPF continued to remain in power.

(From p-1) ACAUT condemned the “attitude of the previous T.R. Zeliang government” in ruining lives of innocent Naga families and also for “falsely claiming before the Naga people” that the state was in deficit when “the 14th Finance Commission had already released Rs.5216 crore as state’s share of taxes.” Citing RTI document it stated that “the Post Devolution Revenue Deficit Grant (or state’s share of tax) is a general grant and utilised by the state government through budgetary allocations.” ACAUT said from above it was clear that the previous T.R. Zeliang government could have utilised the money in any manner it deemed fit including payment of teachers’ salaries. ACAUT said if the “new CM Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü is well-versed in the plight of his people” then to bring the CBI to investigate not only the fuel adulteration racket, rice scam but also on how Rs.5229 crore “is still parked in the state coffers.” ACAUT also demanded of the new CM that he make public HPC report (on unabated taxation) before it does. It also informed all government servants and contractors that there was enough money to clear pending bills and salaries and any excuse will only be blatant lies “to usurp the money for 2018 elections.”

He later tweeted to clarify that there was no shortage of currency notes but the logistical issues of reloading ATMs more frequently had to be addressed. The cash shortage triggered by the notes ban hit the rural poor and the middle class, farmers and small traders hardest. But the government termed demonetisation “a bitter pill” that would eventually rejuvenate the economy. “It may have caused initial discomfort or loss to public but will reap benefits in longer run. It is like a bitter pill for long term ill,” union minister M Venkaiah Naidu said this week. Opposition parties have taken demonetisation to the election battleground, accusing the government of punishing the poor rather than the corrupt with the cash crunch.

NEW DELHI, Feb 22 (Agencies): The government has no plans to introduce 1,000-rupee notes - abolished last year - but is focusing on ramping up production of 500-rupee and other lower denomination notes, Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das tweeted today, scotching rumours that currency printing presses had started printing a new version of the Rs. 1,000 note. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a ban on 500-and- 1,000 rupee notes on November 8 last year, a move that he said would help fight black money, terror funding and fake currency notes. The two high-value currency notes made up for nearly 86 per cent of the total currency in circulation. The Reserve Bank of India promptly introduced a new series of 500-and-2,000 rupee notes but the process to pump in the new currency notes was much slower than

Cyprus peace process falters NICOSIA (CYPRUS), FEB 22 (AGENCIES): Talks to reunify ethnically-split Cyprus suffered another blow after the leader of breakaway Turkish Cypriots backed out of a scheduled meeting aiming to push negotiations forward, officials said Wednesday. Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades expressed regret that Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci told United Nations officials that he won’t attend Thursday’s meeting. “I’m ready to continue negotiations at any time,” Anastasides posted on his official Twitter account. Although both sides insist that talks haven’t collapsed, the latest setback further erodes confidence in the 22-month peace process to reunify the island as a federation. Cyprus was split in 1974 when Turkey invaded after a coup by supporters of union with Greece. More than 35,000 troops are stationed in the island’s north where Turkish Cypriots have declared a breakaway state recognized only by Turkey. Akinci pulled out amid Turkish Cypriot anger over recently-approved legislation that made the commemoration of a 1950 vote for Cyprus’ union with Greece mandatory in Greek Cypriot schools. Akinci insists that Anastasiades must take steps to rescind the legislation before talks can proceed.
Russian military gets massive upgrade M O S C OW, F E B 2 2 (AGENCIES): The Russian military received a sweeping array of new weapons last year, including 41 intercontinental ballistic missiles, and the wideranging military modernization will continue this year, the defense minister said Wednesday. Minister Sergei Shoigu told lawmakers the air force will receive 170 new aircraft, the army will receive 905 tanks and other armored vehicles while the navy will receive 17 new ships this year. Amid tensions with the West, the Kremlin has continued to spend big on new weapons despite Russia’s economic downturn. Also this year, three regiments of Russia’s strategic nuclear forces will receive new intercontinental ballistic missiles, Shoigu said. Each regiment has up to 10 launchers. The rising number of new weapons has raised demands for new personnel.
Expedited deportations
Donald Trump
ment of Homeland Security (DHS) who issued the new orders in two memos, said they were necessary to address a problem that has “overwhelmed” government resources. “The surge of illegal immigration at the southe r n b o r d e r h a s ove r whelmed federal agencies and resources and has created a significant national security vulnerability to the United States,” he said in one of the memos.
The new rules make it easier for border patrol and immigration officers to quickly deport any illegal immigrants they find, with only a few exceptions, principally children. The priority will remain undocumented immigrants convicted of crimes, as well as anyone who has been charged or potentially faces criminal charges. However, people deemed as low priority for deportation by the previous Barack Obama administration -- generally anyone not tied to a crime -- are no longer protected. “With extremely limited exceptions, DHS will not exempt classes or categories of removal aliens from potential enforcement,” the memos said. “All of those in violation of the immigration laws may be subject to enforcement proceedings, up to and including removal from the United States.”
Ready to give US ‘slap in the face’: Iranian commander DUBAI, FEB 22 (Agencies): The United States should expect a “strong slap in the face” if it underestimates Iran’s defensive capabilities, a commander of the elite Revolutionary Guards said on Wednesday, as Tehran concluded war games. Since taking office last month, U.S. President Donald Trump has pledged to get tough with Iran, warning the Islamic Republic after its ballistic missile test on Jan. 29 that it was playing with fire and all U.S. options were on the table. “The enemy should not be mistaken in its assessments, and it will receive a strong slap in the face if it does make such a mistake,” said General Mohammad Pakpour, head of the Guards’ ground forces, quoted by the Guards’ website Sepahnews. On Wednesday, the Revolutionary Guards concluded three days of exercises with rockets, artillery, tanks and helicopters,

weeks after Trump warned that he had put Tehran “on notice” over the missile launch. “The message of these exercises ... for world arrogance is not to do anything stupid,” said Pakpour, quoted by the semi-official news agency Tasnim. “Everyone could see today what power we have on the ground.” The Guards said they test-fired “advanced rockets” and used drones in the three-day exercises which were held in central and eastern Iran.
7 million Yemenis close to starvation: UN
SANAA, FEB 22 (AFP): Seven million Yemenis are closer than ever to starvation, the UN humanitarian coordinator in the country warned today, almost two years since a conflict escalated between the government and rebels. “Seven million Yemenis do not know where their next meal will come from and are ever closer to starvation” in a country of 27 million people, Jamie McGoldrick said. “Over 17 million peo-
ple are currently unable to adequately feed themselves and are frequently forced to skip meals -- women and girls eat the least and last,” he said in a statement. Yemen’s war pits the internationally recognised government of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi against Huthi rebels allied with forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh. The fighting has intensified since a Saudi-led coalition intervened in support of
the government in March 2015 after the Huthis seized the capital the previous September. Since early January, pro-government forces have pressed a major offensive aimed at recapturing Yemen’s Red Sea coastline, and retook the southwestern port of Mokha earlier this month. “I am deeply concerned with the escalation of conflict and militarisation of Yemen’s western coast. It is coming at a great cost to ci-
vilians,” McGoldrick said. Unexploded rockets have landed inside the rebelheld port of Hodeida, he said, “reducing even further the number of ships and imports” vital for Yemen’s food supplies. “Given that the country is 80-90 percent dependent on imported food staples, I am compelled to raise the alarm,” the UN official said. “If left unabated, these factors combined could accelerate the onset of famine.” Gram:Agricomplex Medziphema
N. Korea envoy wanted for Kim murder KUALA LUMPUR, FEB 22 (AFP): Detectives probing the assassination of Kim Jong-Un’s half-brother want to question a North Korean diplomat, Malaysia’s top policeman said today. Investigators have put five North Koreans in the frame for last week’s brazen killing of Kim Jong-Nam at Kuala Lumpur International Airport and have said they are seeking three more for questioning. They include the embassy’s second secretary, Hyon Kwang Song, as well as a North Korean airline employee called Kim Uk Il, Khalid Abu Bakar told reporters. “We have written to the ambassador to allow us to interview both of them. We hope that the Korean embassy will cooperate with us and allow us to interview them quickly. If not, we will compel them to come to us,” he said. Jong-Nam died last Monday after being attacked as he waited for a plane to Macau. Leaked CCTV footage from the airport shows the chubby 45-year-old being approached by two women, one of whom grabs him from behind and appears to shove a cloth in his face. Moments later Jong Nam is seen seeking help from airport staff, who direct him to a clinic, where he apparently slumped in a chair. Malaysian police say he suffered a seizure and died before he reached hospital, seemingly from the effects of some kind of toxin. was behind the murder, citing a “standing order” from Jong-Un to kill his elder sibling, and a failed assassination bid in 2012. Asked whether the five North Korean suspects had masterminded the attack, Khalid said he believed they were “heavily involved” in the murder. Four of the men fled the country on the day of the killing and returned to Pyongyang, he said, while one remains in custody in Malaysia. The police chief dismissed claims the two women had believed the attack was a made-for-TV prank. “Of course they knew” it was a poison attack, Khalid said. “I think you have

WASHINGTON, FEB 22 (AGENCIES): The Trump administration issued tough new orders Tuesday for a sweeping crackdown on illegal immigrants, putting nearly all of the country’s 11 million undocumented foreigners in its cross-hairs. The orders sent shivers throughout US immigrant communities, where millions of people who have spent years building families and livelihoods in the country, most of them from Mexico and Central America, were seriously threatened with deportation for the first time in decades. Rights groups labelled the move a “witch hunt”, warning that a threatened “mass deportation” would damage families with deep roots in the United States and hurt the economy. Since the Month of October 2016, through the Holy Spirit, a situation such as the present one was revealed and through the direction of the Holy Spirit the “Naga Women Prayer Convention” was held under the theme, “Consider and call for the mourning women” Jeremiah 9:17 from 17th to 19th Feb 2017 at Naga Shisha Hoho Prayer Centre Pruzie, Kohima. Reasons for the need to organize this convention: Nagas have committed the following under mentioned sins before God Almighty; • • • • • • • • • •
Instead of trusting in Jesus Christ, Nagas have put their trust in their wealth. Some of the Naga leaders have compromised their faith in Christ with Hinduism. Nagas have been worshipping bird (Hornbill) and satan instead of worshipping Jesus Christ. Nagas have given up their good virtues and have adopted foreign cultures. Some of the Naga leaders have compromised the Naga National cause for money. Nagas have turned against the Lord’s Programs and have failed to keep their commitment before God. Instead of living righteously Nagas have committed many immoral sin. There have been Drunkenness, sexual Immorality and dishonesty in Government offices. Nagas have replaced Jesus Christ with modern technologies. Many of those gifted with the Spiritual gifts have used their gifts freely given by God for monetary gain. God’s wrath is about to be poured out on Nagas and our land: uncountable deaths due to various sicknesses/diseases and in-fighting amongst ourselves is about to come for these sins. For this the Naga women were called through the revelation of the Holy Spirit to humble themselves and pray, shedding their tears for our people & land in order to save our people & land from God’s impending wrath. By the grace of God, the Naga Women Prayer Convention concluded successfully. More than 1,200 women attended the Three-day Convention. The delegates have committed themselves to pray with the following prayer points at 12:00 Noon everyday: • To pray for the liberation of the Nagas from the dominion of the idol worshippers in order to fulfil our commitment given to the Lord. • For out pouring of the Holy Spirit upon our people and our land (Mass revival). • To pray for the 10,000 Missionaries as committed by our people, to revive the world through the power of the Holy Spirit. In response to the cries of the women, who turned up heeding the Lord’s warning & fervently prayed and interceded asking God’s forgiveness and mercy for our people, the Lord revealed through the Holy Spirit, that He has relented from His wrath of death through various diseases and natural calamities. However bloodshed due to fighting amongst ourselves is still yet to be averted, therefore every believers are requested to pray that no such incidents take place among our people and in our land. The Naga Shisha Hoho (Organizing Committee) would like to give all glory and praises to God Almighty for His grace, mercy and His abundant blessings. We extend our gratitude to all who had contributed financially, materially, physically and also through prayer support. Because of your generous contributions, participation and support this convention has been a success. We thank all the participants and the delegates, for your Participation and presence. We are unable to thank everyone individually but may the Lord repay you with his abundant blessings. K-0454

Brit Awards: Skepta and Bowie expected to win prizes S kepta and David Bowie are among the stars expected to win at the Brit Awards on Wednesday night. The grime star and the late rock icon are up for best British male. Other nominees at “music’s biggest night” include Beyonce, The 1975 and Bastille. Performances will come from Ed Sheeran and Little Mix, as well as US stars Katy Perry and Bruno Mars. Dermot O’Leary and Emma Willis have been drafted in to present the ceremony at London’s O2 Arena, after original host Michael Buble pulled out to care for his young son, who is receiving treatment for cancer. Willis, a mum-of-three who presents The Voice UK and Big Brother, said she hoped she could “do him proud”. “Every part of me sends so much love and all
the best wishes in the world to Michael and his family at such a difficult time,” she said. The star will introduce performances from the following acts: Katy Perry - in her first UK TV appearance for three years, Ed Sheeran - premiering a brand new song, Robbie Williams who receives the Brits Icon award, Bruno Mars, The 1975, Little Mix, Emeli Sande, Skepta. This year’s ceremony is notable for its recognition of grime, which re-emerged
from the underground last year, asserting its position as the UK’s biggest musical movement since Britpop. Skepta, who won the 2016 Mercury Prize for his self-released album Konnichiwa, is favourite to win best breakthrough artist; while fellow grime MCs Stormzy and Kano are also up for awards. Bowie - who died in January last year - is likely to prevail in the best British male category, as the music industry takes its chance to honour one of rock’s most recognisable and influen-
Latest bookies’ odds reveal new favourites to replace Craig as 007
M
ichael Fassbender and Grantchester‘s James Norton are frontrunners to become the next Bond, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds. Both actors are 5/2 on to succeed Daniel Craig as 007, according to Coral. William Hill also has Fassbender at 5/2, with Norton slightly behind at 4/1. Coral’s Dan Stevens said of Norton’s shortening odds: “Out of nowhere we’ve been hit with a surge of bets for Norton to be the next Bond. Even after slashing the odds to 5/2 we are still seeing money for the actor, leaving us both shaken and stirred.” Both bookmakers have Tom Hardy in close contention at 11/4. Idris Elba, Tom Hiddleston, Poldark‘s Aidan Turner, Ryan Gosling, Divergent‘s Theo James and Boardwalk Empire‘s Jack Huston are also being backed by punters, albeit at slightly longer odds. Hardy has recently responded to ru-
mours suggesting he could play 007 in a new Bond film directed by Christopher Nolan. Having said in 2015 that he’d “rather slash my wrists” than play Bond again, Craig spoke more positively about his future as 007 last year. The Bond franchise’s executive producer, Callum McDougall, told Radio 4’s Today show last year that Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson remain positive that they will be able to persuade Craig to appear in another film.
tial figures. His haunting swansong, Blackstar, is also up for best British album. Pop group Little Mix tie with Skepta for the most-nominated act of the night - each has three. The girl band look like they will be locked out of their categories, best group (likely to go to The 1975), best video (One Direction) and best single (Clean Bandit, for Rockabye). But they have solid support from Stormzy, who’s rooting for Jade, Perry, Leigh-Anne and Jesy to take home a trophy. “They have smashed it,” the grime star told BBC Newsbeat. “Their new song, Touch, is a banger. I can’t even lie.” Meanwhile, Beyonce and her younger sister Solange Knowles are both up for best international female, after releasing albums about race and politics last year.
Parineeti Chopra to start shooting for ‘Golmaal Again’
T
hree years after her last feature-length turn, Parineeti Chopra is set to return to the posse of A-listers with the fourth film in Rohit Shetty’s blockbuster comedy franchise, Golmaal, alongside Ajay Devgn. The actress kicks off shooting on March 9. Parts of the film will be shot at Hyderabad’s Ramoji Film City, Ooty, Goa and Film City in Mumbai. Buzz is, Parineeti plays a quirky character in Golmaal Again and will be seen kicking and punching her way around, like one of the boys. The 28-year-old actress is tightlipped on the subject, simply saying, “This is my first franchise film so I am really excited and keen to bring my best to the role.

Breaking Bad, for instance, can be bought from Amazon Video, or viewed as part of your Netflix sub, if you have one. The new interface overall is considerably nicer to look at, with a big preview pane for trailers that Amazon thinks you might like up top, and your most recently viewed videos and apps right below that. Beyond that, functionally it’s all but identical, as far as we could make out, but visually it’s far more arresting. Amazon starts shipping the Fire TV Stick 2017 version on April 6.

an Solo is back in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon - and so is Chewbacca the Wookiee in the first official snap from the next Star Wars spin-off movie. The picture shows Alden Ehrenreich - the young Han - flanked by castmates Woody Harrelson, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Emilia Clarke and Donald Glover. Co-directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller also appear, as does Finnish basketball player Joonas Suotamo. In case you’re wondering, the mighty Finn is the one in the Wookiee costume. Glover plays Lando Calrissian in the currently untitled film, which began principal photography on Monday at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire. It’s not yet known who Waller-Bridge will be playing, though reports earlier this month suggested she was being considered for a “CGI-driven” character.
Westworld star Thandie Newton will also have a role in the film, though she is not featured in the informal snapshot released on Tuesday. According to the official Star Wars site, the stand-alone film will explore Han and Chewie’s adventures before the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. Here’s what Lord and Miller had to say about the film, set for release in May 2018. “Watching such inspired people from all over the world, with such unique voices, come together for
the sole purpose of making art, is nothing short of miraculous. “We can’t think of anything funny to say, because we just feel really moved, and really lucky.” Following his confirmation as the new Chewbacca, Suotamo posted a tribute to Peter Mayhew, the British-born actor who first took on the role of the beloved “walking carpet”. The sportsman-turnedactor, who was Mayhew’s body double in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, said Chewbacca was “one of the most iconic characters in the history of film”.

A
new Coldplay single recorded with DJ duo Chainsmokers seems to be on its way. As Your EDM reports, Spotify has uploaded a banner ad for the track, which is titled ‘Something Just Like This’ and credited to ‘The Chainsmokers & Coldplay’. Though the banner ad says “listen now”, the track isn’t actually on Spotify yet. Fans are now speculating that it could drop with the next batch of new releases on Friday (February 24). Chainsmokers, known for hits including ‘Closer’ and ‘Don’t Let Me Down’, first teased the collaboration last September when they shared a pair of song clips featuring Chris Martin’s vocals.
Meanwhile, Coldplay appear set to release more new music this year after tweeting that they were working on a new project – provisionally titled the

While Trainor hasn’t yet given any sneak peeks of the song itself, she has been sharing looks at its music video and the dress code appears to be business casual: In one photo she appears standing over a sort of executive boardroom table, while in others she’s dressed in a top hat with a sparkling jacket. In her posts, Trainor said the new song will be out on Friday. Trainor discussed the song in December at KIISFM’s Jingle Ball, as MTV reports, describing it as “a Meghan Trianor, upbeat, love-yourself woman anthem, like I do!”

NZ snap South Africa’s Stokes far behind wrestling star Stadnik in per minute income 12-ODI winning streak
Ross Taylor
HAGLEY OVAL, FEB 22 (AGENCIES): Trent Boult took the prized wicket of AB de Villiers then bowled Dwaine Pretorious in the penultimate over as New Zealand secured a serieslevelling six-run victory in the second one-day international against South Africa on Wednesday. The visitors had been set 290 to win in Christchurch after Ross Taylor scored 102 not out to become New Zealand’s most prolific ODI centurymaker in leading his side to 289 for four wickets in their 50 overs at Hagley Oval. South Africa, who won the opener of the fivematch series in Hamilton on Sunday, appeared set for victory courtesy of a half century by Quinton
de Kock (57) and solid partnerships through the middle order but were unable to finish off the job. The chase faltered when David Miller’s dismissal for 28 by leg-spinner Ish Sodhi reduced South Africa to 192-5, triggering a lower-order collapse. Boult then had South Africa’s captain de Villiers caught behind by Tom Latham for 45 before Chris Morris was brilliantly run out with a backhand flip by Dean Brownlie. Mitchell Santner stepped up to trap Wayne Parnell in front for a duck to leave the visitors stuttering at 214-8 as the hosts closed in on what appeared to be a comfortable victory. Dwaine Pretorius (50
from 27 balls) and Andile Phehlukwayo (29 not out), who had helped de Villiers through to the four-wicket victory in Hamilton, however, then combined for 61 runs in 7.2 overs to put New Zealand’s nerves on edge. South Africa fought back well to require 20 runs from the final two overs but some excellent death bowling by Boult (3-63), who ended Pretorius’ resistance, and Tim Southee (1-60) ensured the hosts were able to restrict the visitors to 283-9. Earlier, Taylor’s 17th centur y was perfectly paced, with the 32-yearold hitting his eighth four from the final delivery of the innings from Parnell to reach the milestone. The batsman also became the fourth New Zealander to sur pass 6,000 ODI runs when he reached 50.

Stadnik, who bagged silver in 48kg weight category at Rio Olympics,

She was called for only four bouts and remained up to 10.5 minutes on the mat during the 18-day-long season thus earning Rs 4,47,619.05 per minute. CL: Aguero brace guides City to 5-3 win over Monaco
City players celebrate after scoring a goal.
MANCHESTER, FEB 22 (AGENCIES): Manchester City came out on top in an epic Champions League battle against Monaco as late goals by John Stones and Leroy Sane secured a 5-3 victory in a last 16 first-leg thriller on Tuesday that had goals galore and a missed penalty. City took the lead through Raheem Sterling but were then playing catchup as Monaco drew level thanks to Radamel Falcao’s header and then went ahead with a powerful finish from 18-year-old Kylian Mbappe five minutes before halftime. South American poachers Sergio Aguero for City and Falcao, who also missed a penalty, then traded blows with Aguero equalising for 2-2 and then 3-3 after Falcao’s exquisite chip gave Monaco the lead for the second time at The Etihad. City, however, then pulled clear as Stones tapped in at the far post and Sane rolled the ball into an empty net to give City a two-goal advantage ahead of the return on March 15. City manager Pe p Guardiola had called
Monaco “killers” in the box before the game and while they showed just why they are European football’s most deadly assassins, they were embarrassingly fragile at times at the back. They were behind after 26 minutes when Sterling tapped home after Sane dazzled down the left and teed up the England winger. Monaco were handed a route back into the match after 32 minutes following an error by City’s Willy Caballero, the first of the night’s goalkeeping blunders. He gave the ball away with a poor clearance and the visitors worked it to Fabinho whose devilish cross was headed home by former Manchester United and Chelsea striker Falcao. City were denied a penalty by Spanish referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz before Monaco grabbed the lead through Mbappe. The 18-year-old was released through the middle and lashed his finish into the top corner past Caballero. The visitors should h ave ex t e n d e d t h e i r advantage soon after the restart but Falcao’s tame
penalty was saved after Nicolas Otamendi had been penalised for catching the Colombian as he tried to convert Benjamin Mendy’s cross. C ity swiftly m a de Monaco pay as Aguero ended a six-game goaldrought thanks to a Subasic howler. Sterling slid the ball through and the Argentine fired straight at the keeper but it squirmed out of his hands into the net after 58 minutes. Parity was short-lived, however, as Falcao turned City defender Stones before lifting an exquisite chip over the stranded Caballero to make it 3-2 to the principality club. Aguero levelled once more when he volleyed home from 12 metres after a corner and City took the lead when Kevin De Bruyne’s set-piece was turned in by Stones at the far post. The final twist in one of the most entertaining encounters in the competition’s recent history came when Aguero rolled the ball into the path of Sane who tapped into an empty net. A. Madrid beats Leverkusen 4-2 Atletico Madrid beat hosts Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 in a topsy-turvy encounter take a firm handle on their tie ahead of the return leg in Spain next month. Two lethal counterattacks in the opening 25 minutes put the 2014 and 2016 finalists in the driving seat, with Saul Niguez and Antoine Griezmann on target, and gave them the edge for a quarter-final spot for the ninth time.
