Staff Reporter/Correspondent
DIMAPUR/KOHIMA, FEB 18 (NPN): A political ‘surgical strike’ launched from Delhi changed the course of the political scenario in Nagaland within hours on February 17, when 42 legislators –NPF and independent- switched loyalty in favour of Lok Sabha MP and three-time former chief minister Neiphiu Rio to be the next chief minister of the state. It may be recalled, that the 42 legislators, had on February 15, signed a petition urging T.R. Zeliang to step down as chief minister in favour of NPF president, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu. However, when news came that Delhi had signalled its approval for Neiphiu Rio to take over as the next chief minister, the exodus began late Friday night. The legislators in droves, proceeded to Kaziranga resort. By Saturday morning the number of legislators in Kaziranga had swelled to 49 (41 NPF and 8 independents). BJP with four MLAs will await the outcome. It was also learnt that parliamentary secretary Deo Nukhu who was also

In a brief interview with media persons at Dimapur airport, Rio said he came to meet the legislators. “At this juncture, I have no comments,” he replied when asked whether
he was to take over as chief minister. It may be mentioned that Rio arrived on the same flight with Governor of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, P.B. Archarya. Rio later left for ‘Borgoch’ a resort in Kaziranga to meet with the legislators. It was reported that, at the meeting in Kaziranga, the legislators decided to wait for chief minister T.R. Over 200 womenfolk from Kohima village led by Kewhimiapfü Mechü Krotho (KMK) president Khrienguü Kesiezie along with APO advisor Keneingunyü Sekhose and others were stationed at State Civil secretariat main gate. Speaking to this correspondent, Khrienguü Kesiezie said Kohima village in general was opposed to 33% women reservation and that the womenfolk were also firm to stand by the village resolution. She said the womenfolk also demanded immediate resignation of T.R. Zeliang as chief minis-
of the people and to allow normalcy return to state. Further, co-convenor NTAC, Neivor Rutsa who also visited the spot along with other NTAC members clarified that NTAC convenor K.T. Vilie was selected by virtue of being the vice president of APO and not because of any other reasons. Meanwhile, NTAC convenor, K.T. Vilie said the committee had postponed the February 17 ‘public rally’ and fast unto death stir on the request of T.R. Zeliang, to wait for two-three days for smooth transition of office. Dr. Shürhozelie says NTAC asks Governor to Tamil Nadu crisis: Palanisamy wins NPF party still intact ensure Zeliang resigns trust vote after chaos in Assembly DIMAPUR, FEB 18 (NPN): In the face of a near total rebellion after almost 42 NPF legislators deserted him on Friday night, NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu on Saturday put up a brave front and exuded confidence that the party organisation was intact. He said this at the emergency meeting with the NPF Central Executive, Central office bearers along with the division presidents on Saturday evening at his residence in Kohima, NPF media & press bureau said in a press note. Comforting the party functionaries that nothing would go wrong, Dr. Shürhozelie said “we still hold the Trump Card”. He appealed to the party functionaries not to be disheartened, saying “some of our legislators have gone to Kaziranga but they are still NPF legislators and we are in touch with many of them.” Dr. Shürhozelie also
assured the party workers that changes would take place in their favour in a day or two. According to NPF media bureau, other speakers who spoke at the meeting pointed out that the party president and the chief whip of the NPF Legislature Party were still with the party organisation and that “the present Kaziranga episode will flop like the failed Coup D’état of 2015 when majority of the NPF legislators embarked on the misadventure but were compelled to return to the party-fold”. Earlier in the evening, the media bureau said NLA Speaker, Chotisuh Sazo also paid a courtesy call on the party president. NPF claimed that senior legislators at Kaziranga, when contacted, had told party leaders that they would be returning very soon to the capital and assured party functionaries not to be unduly worried.
DIMAPUR, Feb 18 (NPN): Nagaland Tribes Action Committee (NTAC) on Saturday shot off a letter to Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya seeking immediate and prompt action to ensure that T.R. Zeliang resigns as chief minister, saying he had failed to keep his word even after seeking two-three days time for smooth transition of office in the interest of the public. In the letter, NTAC convenor, K.T. Vilie said as the third day was drawing near (February 19), Zeliang had “failed to live up to his word and declined to step down”. He said the committee after a threadbare discussion on Saturday unanimously decided to ask the Governor to take cognizance of the matter at hand and to urge the Governor not to entertain any alternate arrangements till the chief minister stepped down. NTAC appealed to the Governor to address the issue positively before any other issue could crop up. It may be noted that NTAC was scheduled to hold the mass public rally in Kohima on February 17 followed by ‘fast unto death protest’. However, Zeliang in a letter to NTAC sought two-three days time for smooth transition of office.
NEW DELHI/CHENNAI, FEB 18 (AGENCIES): EK Palaniswami The AIADMK government led by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami proved its majority in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, winning 122 votes in favour and 11 against following the eviction of DMK MLAs and walkout of Congress and IUML members. The 11 members who voted against the government belonged to the rebel AIADMK including former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, former School Education Minister K. Pandiarajan, MLAs Semmalai and R. Natraj. After the House was adjourned for a second time at 1 p.m, the marshals forcibly evicted all DMK members by bodily lifting. Leader of Opposition and DMK
working president M K Stalin was seen feverishly slapping his head and screaming while being bodily lifted out. Stalin’s shirt was found torn. Once all the DMK legislators were evicted, the eight Congress MLAs and the lone IUML member walked out. The House had to be adjourned twice following violence by the DMK members, who wanted Speaker P. Dhanapal either to adjourn the trust vote or opt for a secret ballot. Panneerselvam, Congress leader K.R. Ramasamy, IUML member Aboobucker and Mr Natraj also made similar demand. But Speaker P. Dhanapal made it clear that he would abide by the Assembly Rules 19 (1) and conduct the voting, even though Stalin argued that he could
adjourn the proceedings under rule 122 of the House. “Even if the DMK members and others were in the House, the government would have won the majority,” said Assembly Speaker P. Dhanapal, who conducted the confidence vote moved by Chief Minister Palaniswami. The Speaker opted for division method for voting and the entire House was divided into six blocks. After the bell rang three times, Assembly secretary A.M.P. Jamaludeen called members of the block one by one. First he counted those who supported the government and followed it by those who are opposed to the confidence vote. Thirdly, he ascertained those who sought to remain neutral. No members took a neutral position.
Films on Nagaland tribes stir NTAC, JCC react to Zeliangrong Baudi statement debate on hunting, conservation KO L K AT A , F E B 1 8 (IANS): A cluster of films based on the biodiversityrich Nagaland, showcased at the seventh National Science Film Festival, have kick-up a debate on hunting practices and conservation in northeast India’s tribal communities. Revolving around the Yimchunger tribe in Nagaland’s remote Fakim village, the 30-minute film “Point and Shoot” clinched three awards at the fest that concluded on Saturday. “It explores the relationship of the hunting community with animals and birds found in the forests around Fakim. My film documents the pros and cons of hunting versus conservation. It is debate for you to figure out what you would choose,” director Harsimran Kaur Anand told IANS. Set in the same village,

Savyasachi Anju Prabir’s “Miilelam Miiyoh” captures a “perceptive account of the changes in the tribe’s relationship with nature”. In the same vein, Sesino Yhoshu’s award-winning “The Pangti Story” is about the Pangti village’s residents who transformed from hunting Amur Falcons to saving them. The film explores the “transition of an entire village from one that slaughtered hundreds and thousands of the winged visitors
to their most fervent preservationist”. The festival-competition was organised by Vigyan Prasar, Department of Science & Technology (DST) and and National Council of Science Museums. A total of 67 films were screened. According to DST officials, the aim is to help India make a mark in the global science film festival scenario by encouraging students and enthusiasts to develop acumen for science films.
DIMAPUR, FEB 18 (NPN): Nagaland Tribes Action Committee (NTAC), Kohima and Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) have reacted sharply to the press statement of Zeliangrong Baudi (Assam, Manipur and Nagaland), which cried foul over the demand for state chief minister TR Zeliang’s resignation. NTAC Kohima through its media cell said Zeliang was a Naga tribe of Nagaland, which was given official recognition on April 3, 1943. Besides that, NTAC said the existence of a tribe known as Zeliangrong was unheard of. Yet, NTAC said an “ersatz representation” undermining the Zeliang tribe has been regularly seen through a local organization in the form of Zeliangrong Baudi. Therefore, the committee has reminded the functionaries of “so called Zeliangrong Baudi of any
level,” that all the bona fide tribal apex bodies of Nagaland have resolved that any tribe of Nagaland that went against February 7 Kohima meeting decision to pursue the demand of JCC and NTAC would be declared as anti-Naga. Further, NATC reminded the Baudi that JCC’s demand was initially for the extension of ULB election schedule only and as part of their effort an agreement to postpone was signed at Chumukedima. However, it said the cabinet betrayed the agreement leading to the death of three lives and destruction of several government offices. NTAC said this led to the demand for TR Zeliang, as chief minister and head of the state, to resign on moral ground. “Nothing more, nothing less and hence you are asked not to preach us anymore,” NTAC said. (Full text on p-6)
JCC: Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) on Saturday termed as “extremely unfortunate” that the Zeliangrong Baudi (Assam, Manipur and Nagaland) would take the current political imbroglio and the bandh/agitation by people of Nagaland along tribal lines. JCC through its media cell said JCC and NTAC have repeatedly clarified that the ongoing bandh was void of any political agenda or ‘ism’ and was neither directed attack on personal reasons. However, it said that the Zeliangrong Baudi has failed to see that “this is an agitation by the people of Nagaland to defend the rights of Nagas”. JCC added that “all patriotic Nagas” have united in this cause despite their political differences or tribal differences. The committee reminded the Baudi that “this
unfortunate situation” was the sole making of the NPF government and brought about by “treacherous act and dictatorial attitude of T.R. Zeliang.” JCC said it was “simply narrow and condemnable” that Zeliangrong Baudi seemed more concerned for the “loss of chief minister’s chair by their tribe than the loss of three patriotic Naga boys who have sacrificed their lives for Naga cause.” Therefore, JCC stated that the “pathetic attempt” of the Baudi to “paint this issue on tribal color” was an “insult” to the rest of Naga tribe. Further, JCC reminded Baudi not to “play cheap victim and narrow ‘ism’ politics” but see the larger picture for their own benefit, which it said was the unity of all the tribes. It asserted that chief minister seat was not dearer than the Naga cause. K Y M C

Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, Feb 18 (NPN): Day-6 of bandh in Dimapur continued with no untoward incident. Large numbers of volunteers in various junctions still man the streets as part of its duty in Dimapur. In various junctions, mostly matured men and women were seen flocked around to keep the watch. However, most of the volunteers have taken on the weary and bored demeanour as they stoically continue to abide by the call of the JCC/NTAC. Many believe that something good would ensue in the next couple of days. Political development has also been fluid over the last three days with the possibility of a new chief minister in the offing. When a couple of elderly volunteers were asked as to what they felt about participating in the bandh, they replied that it was their duty to stand up for their children’s future. One middle aged man said, “It is difficult for me to spend the whole day on the roadside, eating the pollution but I am glad to be of service for the betterment of our people.” Another woman said that, “after all the loss of lives, damage to properties and hardship on the people, if something good arises out of this bandh, then Nagas are set to start on another chapter in the social aspect.” Some women volunteers who had sacrificed their domestic lives to sit in on the bandh were of the view that such kind of situation should not arise again in
future. As far as trade and commerce in the city is concerned, there has been much tension for those running provision stores, vegetable vendors and even small paan shops. The owner of a paan shop said that, “my stocks of perishable items like betel leaves is rotting and so I cannot even think of the profit at this rate. It is a matter of whether I can even make up for the capital invested.” Despite the look of brisk business after bandh hours, the trade and commerce in the city has not been able to pick up. The main buyers are the salaried people and with no payment of salary, the money circulation in Dimapur is at its lowest in economic aspect. Many have not even been able to pay tuition fees for their children let alone going out to make big monthly purchases. Public resentment now leans towards the bandh and its consequences and not necessarily towards the government or the perceived guilty party. M e a n w h i l e, t h e unprecedented political developments in Kohima and speculations over who will be the next CM, have shifted the public’s attention from the core of the issueULB elections and women reservation. Speculations are rife over the ‘game of thrones’ that is being played out in the state political arena. As such, all eyes now remain fixated on the political outcome as chief minister T.R Zeliang has
already given an assurance to resign. Various demands were made by the JCC and NTAC in the aftermath of January 31 incident but public anger mostly narrowed down to T.R Zeliang during the course of the bandh and
other demands slowly died out. Against this backdrop, it remains to be seen whether the JCC and NTAC would have any objections in the event a new chief
minister take over the reins and whether the protesting groups would follow up their demands vis-à-vis ULB elections to the new government.

168 candidates in fray for first phase Manipur polls
Correspondent
IMPHAL, Feb 18: Two candidates who filed their nomination papers as independent candidates from Keirao Assembly constituency Saturday withdrew their nomination papers from the first phase of the upcoming Manipur assembly polls. After the withdrawal of the two nomination papers, now 168 candidates are in the fray for the first phase which goes to poll on March 4 in 38 Assembly segments spread across Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Churachandpur, Pherzawl and Kangpokpi (the last two ones being curved out from Churachandpur and Senapati respectively. Among others, the candidates in the fray includes 38 from BJP and 37 from the ruling Congress. Even as the opposition
BJP is fielding its candidates in all the 60 seats, the ruling Congress is projecting its candidate in 59 seats after one Khadga Tamang who secured Congress ticket has filed his nomination paper as independent candidate. Tamang did not withdraw his candidature even as Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) spearheading the campaign demanding Inner Line Permit System (ILPS) in the state asked him to withdraw his nomination paper. The JCILPS is opposing Tamang from contesting the election saying that he is not an origin of Manipur. Meanwhile, with the polling day approaching, general observers of the poll have also started conducting field inspection to the districts they were deputed.
Today, general observers for Imphal East district inspected the preparation for the conduct of elections in the district. Political parties and candidates have also intensified their campaign. Candidates in the fray are heavily engaging in door to door campaign while star campaigners are busy in attending flag hoisting cum political conference of their respective parties. For the ruling Congress, incumbent chief minister O Ibobi Singh, his deputy chief minister Gaikhangam and MPCC president TN Haokip are the star campaigners. None of the prominent leaders of the AICC has so far come to the state to take part in the election campaign of the party unlike in the previous elections. However, for the BJP besides many of its nation-
al leaders like Union minister Prakash Javadekar, MP Pahlap Patel, who were camping in Imphal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Rajnath are scheduled to come to the state for election campaign for the party. Tripura demands 40 years age limit for Central job Agartala, Feb 18 (Agencies): Tripura assembly passed a private members resolution to demand central government to increase the upper age limit for the job aspirants to 40 years for facilitating unemployed youths in government sectors. Chief Minister Manik Sarkar on Saturday in the assembly said growth unemployment has become a biggest challenge for the nation now. No state can solve the problem alone unless a national policy is framed to tackle it. “In most of the central government sectors upper age limit is less than 30 years for applying but in case of Tripura it was 37 yrs and the left front government two years ago further increased it to 40 yrs for facilitating more qualified job seekers in employment. Now central government must increase the age limit like Tripura,” Sarkar said. He sought amendment in private members resolution
by Trinamool Congress MLA Pranajit Singha Roy regarding increase of at least two more years of upper age limit in the state government job. After discussion the proposal was accepted in amended form that Central Government should take initiative to increase the upper age limit of employment up to 40 years. The CPI(M) MLA Ratan Das said upper age limit of government job is highest in Tripura among the states all over the country. The age limits are 40 years for general category and 45 years for reserved category. He added issues like poverty eradication, increasing purchasing power of people should be included to introduce any policy. Implementation of such policy will help to strengthen rural economy and unemployed persons will get administrative job. They will also be able to get job in private farms or factories after opening factory.
Gudmoring Emlo Zakaboo. On this special day of yours, I wish you all the very best, all the joy you can ever have and may you be blessed abundantly today, tomorrow and the days to come! May you have a fantastic birthday and many more to come. Happy Birthday Love!!! Always Loriboo.

Fish dying due to uranium exploration: KSU Shillo n g, F e b 1 8 (Agencies): Khasi Student’s Union (KSU) has demanded the Meghalaya government to direct the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research, under the Department of Atomic Energy to fill up all the pits, which were left uncovered after exploratory drilling of uranium in West Khasi Hills. The demand came after mass death of fish in river Ranikor in Meghalaya’s South West Khasi Hills, even as the water body has started changing its colour from blue to green since December last year. “We highly suspect that the sudden death of fishes and now the abnormal change in the colour of the river is due to uranium drilling,” Ranikor KSU circle president Marconi Thongni said. “There are hundreds of pits that were abandoned by the AMD after carrying out of uranium drilling activity in the thick forest at Porkut area in West Khasi Hills,” he said. He said the district authorities have also directed the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board to investigate the matter and death of fish in 2010.
ant in power as well as revenue generation,” he stated. CM also added that Sikkim started on the industrial revolution late but it has still forged its way forward and from the beginning the focus has always been on the power sector. “In such a short span of time of 35 years, this Hydro Electric Project will belong to Sikkim 100%. “ Private Developer Teesta Urja is the company commissioned to run the project for a lease period of 35 years on public private partnership model. Notably, it is the sec-
ond largest Hydel power project to be commissioned in India. The total project cost stands at Rs. 13,965 Crore which includes hard cost component of Rs. 7695 Crore and soft cost component of Rs. 6270 Crore. Chamling further noted that for the first 15 years the project would ensure 12% power free to the Sikkim and 15% from 16th year onwards. “From 6th August 2015, the equity shared of the state was enhanced from the existing 26% to 51%, which meant that the state held a bulk of the share.”
Truckers stop work over driver’s murder in Meghalaya Shillo n g, F e b 1 8 (Agencies): Showing solidarity with the victim of the sensational murder of truck driver, Ram Nath Ray near the village of Dollongre, truckers transporting rice stayed off the road as a mark of respect and solidarity on Friday. The brutal murder has shaken the entire truck driving community leading to the truck owners and drivers association meeting the superintendent of police of West Garo Hills to seek a speedy investigation as well as to seek the immediate arrest of the murderers. Ray, a resident of Samastipur in Bihar was found murdered near the village of Dollongre with his head smashed. Ever since the murder, the handyman, Subham Hajong of Kathalbari in South West Garo Hills has gone missing even as more details of what could have led to the murder emerged. According to family sources, Ray was carrying almost about Rs 50,000 mainly from being paid for previous fares though the money was looted after the murder. “He had spoken to his brother at about 9 pm on Feb 15 informing him about
his plans to retire for the night before proceeding to Bongaigaon. How he landed up near Dollongre is an absolute mystery,” said one of the truck owners today when contacted. As most truck drivers know each other and their trucks, Ray was seen at about 10:30 near Paikan moving into Garo Hills by some other truckers. “On Feb 16, a truck that was returning to Tura saw Ray’s truck near the place of the incident and called out to him. He however did not respond at the time. The driver of the returning truck saw a group of about 4-5 men around the truck and left in haste sensing something may be wrong. He however did not inform the Jengjal police,” said another truck owner. The trucker later called Ray’s brother to inform him of the truck being seen near the place of the incident. “We are really saddened by the entire incident and sought the immediate arrest of the culprit. We have also informed the police of whatever is known to us to ensure the investigation can proceed further and faster,” said one of the representatives of the truckers.

Khandu inspects new Arunachal Assembly building
Govt not sincere in solving blockade: Javadekar
I ta naga r , F e b 1 8 (PTI): Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu today inspected the new state Assembly building where he directed the officials to speed up the construction. Khandu was accompanied by Speaker Tenzing Norbu Thongdok, UD Parliamentary Secretary Techi Kaso, Chief Secretary Shakuntala Gamlin among others. “The chief minister inspected the Assembly hall which has a seating capacity of 90 with construction work almost in its final stage. Few finishing works and electrification are left,” according to an official release. Instructions were also given to speed up the construction work of the boundary wall, it said. Officials assured Khandu that “600 labourers were engaged in the construction of the building and the entire work will be done in time. They expressed confidence that the new Assembly hall will be ready by the coming budget session in March.” A final decision in this regard will be taken after the final round of inspection which will be made on February 28 next.
Imphal, Feb 18 (PTI): The economic blockade in Manipur is “a game plan of Congress” which is not sincere in solving the issue with the Chief Minister confining to barracks central forces at its disposal to ensure safety of highways, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said Saturday. Refuting the Congress allegation that the BJP was hand in gloves with the groups who have called the blockade, Javadekar said the economic blockade was a “gameplan of the Congress”. “The Manipur Chief Minister and the Congress regime know very well that they would lose the polls and that is why they have resorted to the blockade. The gameplan of the Congress is money through power and power through money,” Javadekar, who is also BJP’s in-charge of Manipur, said. The HRD Minister claimed in an interview to PTI that in the last two years there was no blockade and that the prices of LPG and other essentials had come down considerably. “So there was support in favour of the BJP and that is why the Congress resorted to an indefinite
Diphu, Feb 18: Chief adviser of All Assam Students Union Samujjal Bhatacharjee Saturday demanded that Bangladeshi citizens, who have settled in Assam after 1971, should be detected, detained and deported by government. TMC to raise eco blockade issue in Parliament
Imphal, Feb 18 (PTI): The Trinamool Congress today said it would raise in Parliament the issue of ongoing economic blockade in Manipur and already urged the Election Commission to take action to lift the blockade. “We would raise the issue of economic blockade in Parliament. We are against any kind of blockade or shutdown. Recently I had met Election Commission and told them that they were required to act in order to lift the blockade as the model code of conduct is in force in the state,” Roy told PTI. Roy, who is presently in Imphal to campaign for TMC candidates contesting in Manipur elections, said that TMC would play a decisive role after the polls as “no par-
economic blockade. This blockade is by Congress regime, of the Congress regime and for the Congress regime,” Javadekar said. The HRD minister said that the central government had provided 175 companies of central paramilitary forces to the state, but the chief minister was not using them and kept them in the barracks. “The central government had provided these forces which are waiting for the orders of the Chief Minister to control the situation, but he is not giving them any orders. He has ordered them to stay in the barracks,” he said. “You need to deploy just 2,000 central force personnel on the highways to ensure the safety and security of the goods vehicle. But he is not allowing the forces to work. This is the first proof that Congress is not interested in lifting the blockade,” he charged. The United Naga Council has imposed an indefinite economic blockade since November 1, 2016 to protest against the state government’s decision to create seven new districts in the landlocked state by bifurcating the existing ones. The state government has said that the decision
ty will be able to get majority on its own.” “We are in a position to win at least seven to eight seats. We won seven seats in 2012 Manipur Elections. And in the post poll scenario we’ll play a decisive factor as no party will be able to get majority on its own,” Roy said. TMC this time is fighting for 24 seats. Last time with seven seats TMC was the main opposition party in the state. Later, however, all the seven MLAs switched their loyalty to either Congress or BJP. TMC leader in Manipur Samrat Tapadar accused both the BJP and the Congress of playing politics on the issue of blockade and said “both the parties are only interested in votes by exploiting the sufferings of the common people.”

has been taken to improve administrative efficiency. The supply of essential commodities, including fuel, to Manipur has been severely hit since November last year after the council declared indefinite economic blockade on NH2 (via Dimapur) and NH 37 (via Jiribam) - the two lifelines to the state. The minister expressed the Centre’s inability to intervene, citing as reason the absence of President’s Rule in the state. “The Centre is airlifting essentials and fuels for the people of the state. The central government can’t intervene as the state is not under President’s Rule,” Javadekar said. Exuding confidence that BJP would win at least 45 seats in the 60-seat As-
sembly, Javadekar alleged that the state government played a part in various scams that took place in the state. “Be it recruitment in police or other services, we have seen how money was taken from aspirants with promises of recruitment. The state has looted the people left, right and centre. Now through this economic blockade, he is following the policy of divide and rule in the state by separating hills from the valley,” he said. Almost 65 per cent of Manipur’s population lives in the Imphal Valley dominated by Meiteis. Two tribal groups, Naga and Kuki-Zomi, account for the remaining 35 per cent of the population scattered across Manipur’s hills that make up 90 per cent of the state’s geographical area. The plains have 40 of the 60 seats in the state Assembly. Javadekar also targetted the government with the allegations of extra-judicial killings in Manipur. “We have to find out under whose orders these extra-judicial killings and fake encounters took place. Who gave those orders, it needs to be inquired,” he said.

Stalin arrested; violence breaks out across TN
Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin shows his torn shirt outside Fort St. George in Chennai on Saturday.
C H E N NA I , F e b 1 8 (AGENCIES): Leader of the Opposition M K Stalin, who went on a hunger strike on Saturday protesting the confidence vote victory of chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami in the Tamil Nadu assembly, was arrested by the Chennai police. The DMK’s working president gathered his party men and sat at the Gandhi statue on the Marina Beach. However, the police arrested him. His supporters blocked the route to prevent the cops from talking him away. Later, Stalin and other senior leaders like Duraimurugan and around 200 party workers were taken to Karpagambal Kalyana Mantapam on Kutcheri Salai in Mylapore. They were released after 8pm. Violence broke out in several parts of the state after DMK members were evicted from the assembly and the trust motion was passed. DMK cadre blocked Chennai-Banga-
lore National Highway at several places, including Ambur and Ranipet. They burnt the effigy of Speaker P Dhanapal in Tiruvannamalai and other parts of the state. DMK men, including former Greater Chennai Corporation Mayor M Subramanian, blocked traffic on the Sardar Patel Road, as they staged a sitin protest. Stalin, who exited the assembly corridors with an unbuttoned shirt, was evicted from the assembly alongside his party MLAs by Speaker P Dhanapal, after the DMK’s antics forced him to adjourn the session twice . Stating that the Speaker had shed “crocodile tears”, when the assembly reconvened at 1pm, Stalin alleged that Dhanapal had torn his own shirt. “He deliberately tore his shirt. I told him that I regretted the incident (chaos) and would take responsibility for any wrong done knowingly or unknowingly by the DMK
members,” he said. The Kolathur MLA alleged that his party men had been beaten up and stamped on by watch and ward staff and police personnel at the assembly. “I already have internal injuries (from an earlier incident). They beat us, and they tortured us,” Stalin said. He added that the DMK legislators gave a letter to the Speaker expressing disapproval at how the confidence vote was passed. Before launching the hunger strike, Stalin met Governor C Vidyasagar Rao at Raj Bhavan. Stalin was joined by DMK’s Rajya Sabha MPs Kanimozhi and Tiruchi Siva. Violence broke out in several parts in Coimbatore. Former minister Pongalur Palanisami along with 100 party men blocked the traffic on the Railway Station
Road at around 4pm. As many as 98 protesters were detained. Party men shouted slogans against the assembly speaker Dhanapal, former AIADMK general secretary V K Sasikala and chief minister Edapaddi Palaniswami. Pongalur Palanisami said that the behaviour of the AIADMK speaker was undemocratic. The party demanded that Governor C Vidyasagar Rao intervene in the matter and disqualify the motion of vote of confidence that was passed on Saturday evening. “The governor should disqualify the motion, and dissolve the present government. Had the demand for secret ballot voting been accepted, the result would have been otherwise,” he said. The DMK leader threatened that protests would continue until justice was delivered.

S
oon after the Speaker declared the Palaniswami government won the confidence motion with 122 votes supporting it, former Chief Minsiter O. Panneerselvam alleged that the floor test conducted after the eviction of Opposition members went against democratic norms. “Dharma has been momentarily eclipsed but it shall win finally”, the former Chief Minister said. “MLAs were confined in resorts. Since the Governor had granted 15 days to prove majority, we said the MLAs should be allowed to go to their constituencies and talk to the people before they exercised their vote. We also sought secret ballot but the Speaker refused”. “DMK MLAs were forcibly evicted from the

House. They were also injured. Now people will judge them. When these MLAs go to the people they will realise the opposition. The voters will certainly question them”, Panneerselvam said. “We all belong to Amma’s (Jayalalithaa) faction. We will win with the people’s support in the future”, Panneerselvam said.

5 Defamation case: Kejriwal asked to appear before court NEW DELHI, Feb 18 (Agencies): Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal was on Saturday directed to appear on March 21 before a Delhi court which granted him exemption from personal appearance for the day in a criminal defamation complaint filed by DDCA+ and Chetan Chauhan. Metropolitan magistrate Abhilash Malhotra allowed Kejriwal’s plea for exemption for the day as he is in Bengaluru for treatment and would return on February 22. Kejriwal said in his application that his nonappearance was neither deliberate nor intentional. The court also granted bail to suspended BJP MP Kirti Azad, who along with Kejriwal was summoned as accused in the matter, on furnishing a personal bond of Rs 10,000+ and surety of like amount. During the hearing, Azad’s counsel argued that the complaint was not maintainable as the Delhi high court has appointed justice Vikramajit Sen as administrator of the cricketing body. Advocate Sangram Patnaik, who appeared for DDCA and Chauhan, opposed it and argued that the plea was maintainable as at the time of filing of the complaint, Chauhan was the vice president of DDCA and he has also filed the plea in his individual capacity. The court had on January 30 summoned Kejriwal and Azad, saying their statements prima facie adversely affected the reputation of the cricketing body and its officials. The complaint has claimed that the defamatory statements were made by Kejriwal and Azad, who himself is a member of
1. Chennaiites awoke to a city almost completely shut down by police, ahead of the trust vote in the Tamil Nadu Assembly scheduled for 11am. Around 8am, AIADMK MLAs corralled in Kuvathur’s Golden Bay Resort for more than 10 days started leaving for Chennai. Soon after, the opposition DMK’s working president M K Stalin set out for the Assembly, choosing to walk the half-kilometre stretch to the secretariat after his vehicle was stopped for checking by police and security personnel. 2. At 9 pm, AIADMK chief minister EK Palaniswami-of the Sasikala faction -arrived at the secretariat for the floor test. Soon after, journalists said they were being kept out of the Assembly premises. 3. When the session began at 11 am, with 230 MLAs present, CM Palaniswami moved a motion for vote of confidence in the assembly, which speaker P Dhanapal accepted. Soon after, the opposition DMK and the Congress, started raising slogans in favour of the AIADMK’s pro-Panneerselvam (OPS) faction, which in turn started loudly demanding a secret ballot. The DMK and the Congress soon joined the chorus for a secret ballot. 4. In fact, the DMK’s MK Stalin even told the House the floor test should be done on another day. “Why the hurry when the Governor has given 15 days time?” he asked, even as OPS raised his hands and pressed them together in Stalin’s direction, thanking him. OPS also told the House that MLAs should be given time to hear the views of their constituencies. Until then, a floor test shouldn’t take place.
5. The speaker rejected the demand for a secret ballot. “Nobody can interfere in my decision on how to vote,” speaker Dhanapal said. Then, a little before 11:30 am, all doors to the Tamil Nadu Assembly were shut. Right then, the television telecast of the proceedings was stopped. The audio of the proceedings was also shut. 6. After this, conflicting news trickled out. Some sources said that without a secret ballot, the House began ‘division voting’, where MLAs were asked to stand up in blocks of six and declare their vote. 7. Other sources said there was chaos in the assembly with chairs and microphones being flung around+ and broken by opposition DMK members demanding a secret ballot and lawmakers ‘gheraoing’ the speaker. Reportedly, Ku Ka Selvam, a DMK MLA went and occupied the speaker’s chair. An official was also injured, ANI reported. Around 12:15 am, the speaker adjourned the House till 1:00 pm and walked out. 8. After the House resumed at 1:00 pm, all the present DMK MLAs - 88 of 89 - were evicted after proceedings again descended into chaos. Half an hour later, Palaniswami moved a confidence motion again. 9. At 1:30 pm, the House was adjourned again and scheduled to resume at 3:00 pm. Rain lashes J&K, minimum temp rising
ED arrests Zakir Naik aide in PMLA case
S r inaga r . F E B 1 8 (AGENCIES): Intermittent rainfall lashed wide parts of Jammu and Kashmir as the minimum temperature in the region continued its upward trend today, settling over five degrees above normal during this part of winter. The minimum temperature in the summer capital of Srinagar was recorded at 6.5 degrees Celsius against the normal 1.0 degrees Celsius during this part of the season. The city recorded 1.4 mm of rainfall during the night, a spokesman of the MeT department told PTI here. “Widespread rain or snow is expected during the next 48 hours under the influence of western disturbance which hit the region yesterday and will remain active till Monday,” the spokesman said.
MUMBAI, Feb 18 (Agencies): Aamir Gazdar, a close aide of controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, was on Thursday arrested by ED in connection with its probe in a money laundering case against him and others. Officials said Gazdar, director in certain firms under scanner in this case, was arrested late evening by the Enforcement Directorate under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). “Gazdar, a close confidante of Naik, was put under arrest around 7:30 PM Thursday. He will be produced in a court tomorrow for further custody,” an official said. Gazdar (50), officials said, was called for questioning at the ED’s office here and was arrested as he was allegedly “not cooperating” with the investigators. Officials claimed the
Zakir Naik
agency suspects that Gazdar allegedly handled cash funds and transactions worth Rs 200 crore on behalf of Naik and his NGO Islamic Research Foundation (IRF). They added Gazdar’s firm used to reportedly provide content for IRF’s Peace TV, and its operations were handled from the western metropolis here. ED, for quite sometime now, has been summoning representatives of IRF and
Arvind Kejriwal
DDCA, “to remain in the public eye and gain political mileage”. “In an interview to a news channel, Kejriwal had alleged that apart from financial irregularities, there were other major wrongdoings in DDCA, including a sex racket,” the plea has alleged. While summoning Kejriwal, the magistrate had said it was prima facie clear from records that he made the defamatory imputation with a knowledge that it may harm the reputation of DDCA and its officials. The court had also noted that the statement was broadcast not only on news channel, but also widely published in all national dailies and Internet. The allegation against Azad was that he endorsed the defamatory allegations made by Kejriwal and claimed he had raised a similar issue in 2007. The court had on January 28 reserved its order on the plea after hearing arguments of the complainant’s counsel on pre-summoning evidence. The plea alleged that Kejriwal had made “scandalous” remarks against DDCA on television due to which the cricketing body and Chauhan have suffered irreparable loss in the eyes of the public.
those related or associated to Naik in connection with its PMLA case and Gazdar was being questioned in the same context, they said. The central probe agency had registered a criminal case against Naik and others last December after taking cognisance of an NIA complaint under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. It has also summoned Naik but he is still to depose before the agency as he is reported to be abroad. ED is looking into the charges of alleged illegal funds laundered by the accused in the case and the subsequent proceeds of crime thus generated. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had earlier registered a case against 51-year-old Naik under antiterror laws for allegedly promoting enmity between different religious groups.
43 unused airports to start Male reluctance leading to drop in contraceptive use functioning soon: Choubey PANAJI, FEB 18 (AGENCIES): In a move aimed at boosting the regional connectivity across the country, the Union Civil Aviation ministry on Saturday said that 43 unused airports would be operationalised within a year, a senior official said. “The main idea behind operationalising these 43 unused airports is to improve the connectivity to the hinterland. Proposals have already been received from 11 bidders who will put these airports into commercial operations,” Union Civil Aviation Secretary R N Choubey told reporters in South Goa. He was briefing media in presence of Union Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju after inaugurating the three-day workshop on indigenously developed software aiding to manage

revenue in the sky. Choubey said, at present, their are 72 airports and addition of these 43 will change the scenario in the Indian skies. “It will take another 15-20 days to award the routes for the airlines, who will take somewhere between one to six months
to start the operations at these newly inducted facilities,” he added. Fixing a rate cap for the fares at these newly inducted airports, the ministry has decided that flying to these facilities would not cost more than Rs 2,500 for an hour long flight.
New Delhi, FEB 18 (AGENCIES): Over the eight years to 2016, as India’s population surged, the use of contraceptives declined almost 35 per cent, even as abortions and use of emergency pills -- both with health hazards and side effects -- doubled. Despite a 14 per cent percentage-point rise in literacy in the decade to 2011, hazardous birth-control measures of the last resort are becoming the first choice among both poorer and wealthier, bettereducated Indians. The result is that the country’s population, now estimated at 1.32 billion, is expected to surpass China’s in the next six years and reach 1.7 billion by 2050, even as millions of women die from unsafe abortions. While condom use declined 52 per cent over eight years and vasectomies fell 73 per cent -- indicating
greater reluctance among men to use birth control -the use of oral birth-control pills fell 30 per cent, Health Ministry data showed. Compared to 300,000 men who agreed to vasectomies in 2008-09, more than 5.5 million women agreed to use intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCDs) to avoid pregnancy the same year. Over the years, the number of women resorting to these devices has remained steady. “People think that women should undergo everything,” said Nozer Sheriar, deputy secretary general of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI). The government is trying to expand contraceptive choice and use, Health Minister J.P. Nadda -- referring to the forthcoming launch of controversial injectable contraceptives for women in
the public health system -said in January 2017. Greater contraceptive use allows births to be spaced better and reduces the chances of accidental pregnancies and population rise. Does the use of conventional contraceptives correlate with literacy rate? That is not clear. Indeed, there is some evidence that the opposite is true. For instance, Karnataka’s literacy rate (75.6 per cent) is higher than than the national average of 74 per cent. Yet the state is among the top five of those that reported the highest drop in vasectomies, IUCDs and oral-pill use. In Bihar, with a 73 per cent male-literacy rate (overall 64 per cent), the use of oral pills rose four times and the use of condoms doubled between 2008 and 2016. In Kerala, where 96 per cent of men are literate, condom use dropped 42
per cent. While Indian men believe that condoms reduce sexual pleasure and vasectomies rob them of their manhood, women have concerns about the health impacts of IUCDs and oral pills, said Umesh Kulkarni, part of the training team of Ipas, an NGO that tries to prevent death and disability from unsafe abortions. Over a decade to 2016, in 10 of 14 states surveyed as part of the National Family Health Survey, 2015-16, use of any modern method of family planning among women of childbearing age (15 to 49) decreased six per cent, despite a greater awareness of birth-control methods and an improvement in family planning services. So, why is contraceptive use falling? The government’s “aggressive approach” -- with doctors in public-health centres given
targets and incentives for vasectomies and IUCD insertions and government school teachers offered pay rises to push these family planning methods -- is counter-productive, said Ipas’ Kulkarni, a medical doctor. The growing reluctance to undergo vasectomies could be an echo of the wariness created by the hardsell. While 290,000 Indian men chose this permanent contraceptive in 2008-09, the figure for 201516 was less than 80,000. Information, education and communication about male sterilisation is inadequate, said experts, not only in society at large but in the public-health system. The fall in use of condoms could reflect these inadequacies. Condoms are a better option than other oral-contraceptive methods, but men are not keen to use them.

Nagaland Post Vol. XXVII NO. 74 Dimapur, Sunday, February 19, 2017
D
For realism
espite decades planning on economic development for Nagaland, there has been no significant progress especially during the past decade and this indicates that the problem is probably with the mismatch between fantasy and reality which may be the challenge that faces any planner in accepting ground reality vis-à-vis the economic vision. The recent incidents in the state and also the breakdown of government machinery during the past over two weeks has brought to the fore the price that has to be paid for neglecting the art of governance. The negligence of such an important matter is also a revelation that the bureaucracy and planners including society’s leaders don’t think about the future. This future is also about what has been prepared and laid down for laying the economic foundation. Issues such as land not being given to the government for development, also needs to be seen in the light of how this matter has been handled. Many government lands especially in Dimapur have changed ownership and today most government colonies have disappeared. While major departments prepare their respective blueprints for housing; on the other hand, vast areas of land and in many cases with existing buildings, are being given away on a platter. It would have been another story if lands and building were auctioned to the highest bidder. The system of allotment of land is being dealt with by the land revenue department but this does not seem to have arrested the practice of allotment(grab) of government lands and quarters. The conventional thinking that encroachments are committed by private persons also comes unstuck when it is reported that government servants themselves are involved. Even educational institutions are not spared as the tentacle of encroachments are being legalized through dubious allotments. If the government cannot maintain its assets and give away its own lands and infrastructures then it does not make sense. Today the government has to buy lands for projects and this has added to the cost. This becomes an added and unnecessary financial burden. If projects were built on governments plots, then accessibility and viability are added values as against being compelled to buy land and locate them at far away places. The issue over ownership of land and resources has been used as ruse by individuals to refuse giving land(at government requisitioned rate). Thus, the economic vision does not subsist on how they are presented but drawing attention to the reality. The vision for economic development is multi- faceted; for it concerns not only about business activities but the people who have it in them to do business. A lot of emphasis should be given towards creating necessary condition for the uplift of the rural areas. This is from the point of view of the potential in agricultural activities as well as growing number of youth who otherwise add to the problem of unemployment. If this is not tackled, the rising unemployment will only create more problems in the state Coupled with the rising unemployment and anti-social factors .The imbalances in development has to be corrected if the economic cycle is to be enlarged by creating more avenues. If business is to thrive, it is obvious that opportunities for jobs should also open up; after all economic gains should be well distributed.
DailyDevotion Taking the Initiative Against Despair
Rise, let us be going. —Matthew 26:46 In the Garden of Gethsemane, the disciples went to sleep when they should have stayed awake, and once they realized what they had done it produced despair. The sense of having done something irreversible tends to make us despair. We say, “Well, it’s all over and ruined now; what’s the point in trying anymore.” If we think this kind of despair is an exception, we are mistaken. It is a very ordinary human experience. Whenever we realize we have not taken advantage of a magnificent opportunity, we are apt to sink into despair. But Jesus comes and lovingly says to us, in essence, “Sleep on now. That opportunity is lost forever and you can’t change that. But get up, and let’s go on to the next thing.” In other words, let the past sleep, but let it sleep in the sweet embrace of Christ, and let us go on into the invincible future with Him. There will be experiences like this in each of our lives. We will have times of despair caused by real events in our lives, and we will be unable to lift ourselves out of them. The disciples, in this instance, had done a downright unthinkable thing— they had gone to sleep instead of watching with Jesus. But our Lord came to them taking the spiritual initiative against their despair and said, in effect, “Get up, and do the next thing.” If we are inspired by God, what is the next thing? It is to trust Him absolutely and to pray on the basis of His redemption. Never let the sense of past failure defeat your next step.
Quotes Every day we have plenty of opportunities to get angry, stressed or offended. But what you’re doing when you indulge these negative emotions is giving something outside yourself power over your happiness. You can choose to not let little things upset you. ~ Joel Osteen

Post-mortem
NTAC responds to Lessons from the recent Zeliangrong Baudi statement Naga crisis and issues N I ssues are challenges and difficulties we face in life, but they are not beyond solution. Our responses depend on how prepared or unprepared we are. They reveal our hearts and test us whether we operate on the principles of truth and love. The recent crisis that plagued our state has been unprecedented in three major ways. Never in the annals of Naga history has the state witnessed an uprising of the public of this magnitude and intensity. Secondly, never has a movement brought about all the Naga tribes as one voice and one people as closely as this movement did. This movement has been tried and tested and has ultimately proven that ‘together we can’ and ‘together we will’. Finally, ever since the Naga Peace Mission in the early sixties, the Church came out, open and on the offensive with the Kingdom of God’s mission for the first time. We all know how we responded. Notwithstanding the outcome, NBCC said the Church is always hopeful. What a message! ABCC, under NBCC, along with other denominations hopefully stepped out to do its best, calling all to stand on the values and principles of truth and love. When love grows cold and truth becomes diluted, problems multiply and we land in a situation where everything makes sense and nothing makes sense! In every crisis encountered so far, all of us have been weighed and found wanting, falling short of our best. No exception! We need to think harder, learn and grow! Let this crisis be a defin-
ing chapter in the history of the Naga Movement and let us move forward from here, instead of dwelling on what has passed. There have been a great many important and crucial lessons learnt from this, and it is time we start putting these lessons into practice rather than repeating the same mistakes over and over again. Let us not forget that we are a slowly developing society, just barely emerged from an ancient lifestyle, but definitely progressing with the passage of time. New horizons are appearing, rays of hope are emerging for men and women alike. We need to advance cautiously and wisely in the direction of our dreams and endeavour to be more trust-worthy, contributing our mites. We are all challenged to brighten the corners wherever we are planted. The recent turmoil has also put an oft repeated message across, loud and clear for all to hear in this instance, that it is time to put our various differences aside, be it tribal, political or social, and come together as one people, with a common vision, and with a common voice. The message is also clear to all who have been listening, that we should begin shedding the divisive institution of “unionism”, which itself is an unprecedented practice (in the world?) with every village and khel promoting its own union, tearing our people apart into tiny islands. Let us, for a start, try to make do with a smaller number of essential unions who have the capacity to represent a tribe as a whole, while being part of a common Naga Body. It is not
wrong to envision that we can one day, be a people under one common body without further divisions. This I say because we still have another big and pressing issue – the Naga National Political Issue. Politics flow in the blood of every Naga. Our prayer is always, “THY WILL BE DONE ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN”, and for which our people are ceaselessly praying throughout and all over the length and breadth of our land, because we love our people and our land, and we want to STAND TOGETHER on TRUTH ALONE. This time, we can learn an ancient lesson anew in a more refreshing manner. IN A DEMOCRACY, THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE IS SUPREME. In a theocracy, whatever faith we believe and profess, the Will of God is the final word. Amidst all the recent chaos, someone had commented, “People usually deserve the government they get”. How aptly put! A seemingly simple line speaking volumes of wisdom! Let us take heed and RESPOND TO THE CALL OF OUR CONSCIENCE. What do we stand to lose by being responsible citizens and playing our rightful parts in a clean and fair election to put a responsible government in its rightful place next time? Let us all be more truthful and more loving from now on, whether we are underground, overground or middleground. With that, our hope grows ever bigger! Dr. Dietho-o, ‘South Corner’, A.G. Road, Kohima
aga tribes of Nagaland are very much aware that the Zeliang is a Naga tribe of Nagaland being given official recognition on April 3, 1943. Other than that, to the knowledge of all Naga tribes of Nagaland existence of a tribe known as Zeliangrong is unheard of. Yet in spite of the fact that Zeliang is a tribe of Nagaland observably over and over again an ersatz representation undermining the Zeliang tribe has been regularly seen through a local organization in the form of Zeliangrong Baudi. It is therefore made known to the functionaries of so called Zeliangrong Baudi of any level and all such diehard stalwart clique and beneficiaries of T.R Zeliang’s affluent standing that all the bonafied tribal apex bodies of Nagaland had resolved that any tribe of Nagaland who goes against the 7 February Kohima meeting decision to pursue the demand of JCC and NTAC shall be declared as anti-Naga. Let it be known to them also that JCC and NTAC very much know what we are doing or are they not aware of the old age Naga customary practice that forbids intermingling of a slayer and the slain families? We assume that you are all not from Nagaland that is why you may not be aware of what had been happening all these days. If Zeliangrong Baudi office bearers are by chance lodged in Nagaland then we invite you all for a threadbare discussion since you seem to know quite a lot about the issue. For your kind information, JCC’s demand was initially foe the extension of the ULB election scheduled only as part of their effort an agreement to postpone was signed at Chumukedima but this the cabinet betrayed leading to the death of three lives and destruction of several government offices. This led to the demand for T.R Zeliang as chief minister and head of the state to resign on moral ground. Nothing more, nothing led and hence you are asked not to preach us anymore. Have all the statements thus far published by your bunch of vested interest and adherent of T.R Zeliang not been grossly
GBs Union Peren district appeals
(From previous issue) Inspite of conceding to the request made by the agitators, the agitators continuing to demand the stepping down of Shri TR Zeliang from the Chief Ministership reeks only of vindictive political agenda to oust Shri TR Zeliang from the Chief Ministership with undemocratic means. Nagaland has witnessed toppling game in the past. During the 70s when Dr. SC Jamir was removed from Deputy Chief Minister post by the then Chief Minister Late Vizol Angami, Dr. SC Jamir toppled the Vizol Government and became the Chief Minister of Nagaland, the one month old SC Jamir government was then toppled paving way for Late JB Jasokie to take over as the Chief Minister, a post which he held till the next general election of 1982. And again during the late 1980s and early 1990s Nagaland witnessed another toppling game when Shri KL Chisi toppled the Dr. SC Jamir government to become the state Chief Minister for one month. The KL Chisi government was toppled to pave way for Late Vamuzo to take over as the Chief Minister which was toppled necessitating President’s Rule in the state. In the present political scenario in Nagaland it is to impress upon the people of Nagaland that neither Shri TR Zeliang nor the NPF Party nor the Hon’ble MLAs of the Nagaland State Legislative Assembly has not in any way at any point of time attempted to oust Shri Neiphiu Rio from the Chief Ministership of Nagaland. In fact it may be recalled that when he hinted of joining National Politics his MLA colleagues, his partymen and well wishers requested him to remain as the state Chief Minister: A request he chose to ignore. At a time when Nagaland was heavily in debts and salvaging it seems a mammoth task he chose to leave the sinking ship. Now that under the Dynamic leadership of Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu Chairman DAN Alliance and the DAN Government led by TR Zeliang is doing its best to pluck the holes of the sinking ship by taking up financial austerity measures, the state debt is now reduced considerably and developments have started pouring into the state with the active coordination of the State and Central Government, how do few MLAs,
cohorts of Neiphiu Rio have the illusion that Neiphiu Rio’s return to Nagaland will salvage the NPF party when in the first place there is no rift in the NPF Party. It is to further impress upon the people of Nagaland that the Zeliang tribe is a very small community in the state of Nagaland with very less population and only two MLA seats. In such a humble environment, it may be known to all that Shri TR Zeliang has never nursed the thought of occupying the dignified and august office of the Chief Minister of Nagaland not to speak of thinking of toppling a Naga leader to enter the august office. The fact that today Shri TR Zeliang is the Chief Minister is not because the Zeliang tribe are united and posses political acumen to convince the Naga populace to make him the State Chief Minister. In fact from day one Shri Namri Nchang the other MLA from Peren District was on the side that was against Shri TR Zeliang from becoming the Chief Minister of Nagaland. The fact that Shri TR Zeliang is today the Chief Minister of Nagaland against all odds is because of the fact that God has blessed him to become our Chief Minister and our Naga Legislators has blessed and accepted him to be the leader of the house and to work together for peace and progress in the state. When the majority of the MLAs are with him to ask him to step down is unconstitutional and undemocratic. The voice of the people, the mandate of the people’s voice will be echoed with the result of the 2018 Nagaland State Legislative Assembly General Elections. Till such time the voice of the people are the voice of the elected MLAs the representatives of the people.. Shri TR Zeliang with the blessing of his legislators enjoys absolute majority in the house, and therefore as long as Shri TR Zeliang enjoys the confidence of the house, he cannot step down. The constitutional provision cannot permit him and democratic procedure will not allow him to step down. If he is to step down under public pressure while enjoying the confidence of the house, an un-precedent undemocratic precedence will be set wherein any mafia like group will coerce and force democratic government to step down on the pretext of
so called mass voice of the people. Even if Shri TR Zeliang is willing to step down the law of the country will not allow such undemocratic action to take place. Getting back to the core issue of how it all started, certain agitators misquoted Article 371A in order to mislead and misguide the Naga populace. The agitators say because Article 371A upholds customary practice and usage of the Nagas and because it is not within the Naga custom to allow women to sit in decision making bodies, women should not be allowed to contest the ULB elections. The situation at hand is about interpretation and misinterpretation of Article 371A. However if we allow certain group to continue to connive to twist facts, misinterpret the constitution and its provisions to create law and order problems and misunderstandings among the populace a time may come when the special provision of Article 371A will be considered for amendment to ensure gender equality. It may be recalled that since the early 1980s it was made mandatory for all the Village Councils, VDBs, VECs etc. to have women representatives and there has been no objection from any quarter. Almost all the village councils will readily admit to having women representatives in their respective council. Going by records during the late 1980s Mrs. Banuo Z. Jamir IAS was the first woman Deputy Commissioner of Kohima District during the erstwhile undivided Kohima District before Phek, Dimapur and Peren Districts were carved out of it. The District was then represented by 20 MLAs. We may please recollect meaningfully that at that point of time not a word of resentment was uttered from any Naga tribe across Nagaland objecting a woman Deputy Commissioner to head the state capital on grounds that since it is against the Naga customary practice and usage for women to sit in decision making body and because the office of the Deputy Commissioner is the highest decision making body of the district Mrs. Banuo Z. Jamir IAS being a woman should not be posted as DC Kohima because such posting will infringe and violate the provision of Article 371A and that such posting of placing
a women to sit in the highest decision making body of the district will be an insult to the male population of Nagaland. It may also be recalled when Mrs. Banuo Z. Jamir the able and efficient officer was made the first female Chief Secretary of Nagaland the highest executive decision making body of the state, there was no outcry that women should not sit in the apex decision making body of the State. Taking Mrs. Banuo Z. Jamir IAS as their role model many females in our Naga family have today joined the state civil service, allied services etc. and are today Administrative Head of Departments, Head of Departments, Administrative Officers, Judicial Officers, department officers posted out in the districts and serving fairly well across the entire state even to the most remote locations. No Naga tribe has ever come out opposing women posted to hold offices on grounds that it is against the Naga customary practice and usage for women to sit in decision making body since such posting will insult the male counterpart. Going in line with the irrational minds of the protesters are we now to stop sending our daughters and our sisters to schools. Are we to discourage our daughters and our sisters not to prepare for competitive exams or try to be in government service because it is against Naga customary practice and usage for women to sit in decision making bodies. Today due to the bandh all the school children are being affected. Knowing fully well that the HSSLC and HSLC exams are going to be conducted and yet imposing bandh during the scheduled exam period, creating unfavourable atmosphere and situations where the students to appear these exams are unable to prepare for their exams in a peaceful and calm atmosphere are acts of the protesters which do not have any respect and regard for our children. It is said the future of a nation depends upon the young generation. To stop the children from going to schools by imposing uncalled for bandhs and making them loose many schools days is an irreparable lose for our children who are so eager to learn and become goods citizens because time lost can never be recovered again or compensated.
inflammatory and testing the patience of the people of Nagaland? You whole lot of cohort would do better to sensibly refrain from attempt of such abominable scheming as to drag the blameless Zeliang people of Nagaland in the misadventure as your deceiving benefactor who now, like a forlorn desperado, a renegade is circumventing from facing the veracity of real issue. Apparently because your days of usually and vehemently hijacking the right of the virtuous Zeliangs of Nagaland are coming to an end with the imminent downfall of your assumed redeemer who himself is desperately struggling to survive from the present tumultous your defeatist expression of accusation as “suppressive attitude of some Naga brothers who have tried to create fear psychosis in the minds of the Zeliangrong people” and defiantly maintaining a stance of taking refuge justifying that the demand of the people for T.R Zeliang to step down as the chief minister of Nagaland because he hails from “a minor and backward tribe” has been triggered befitting the level of understanding of only your kind. It further is horrendously appalling because nowhere and never have the people of Zeliang tribe of Nagaland bee portrayed “anti-Naga” in Nagaland but the arrow mindedness and the tensely petrified mindset of your lot in stupidly failing to understand the media jargon that reported the poster campaign having it printed out in the headlines of local newspapers as “anti-Zeliang” to mean anti T.R Zeliang is very lowly a perception unless your lot, by your overtly terrified design is up to convince all Zeliang people and be able to isolate from the family of Naga people of Nagaland. Therefore your repeated hurling of such insincere accusations on the people of Nagaland time and again which only tantamount to adding fuel to the fire than expression of truthful concern over the sufferings of the people of the state of Nagaland that we all love and hold dear be desisted. Media cell, NTAC Kohima
It is said the world suffers not because of the bad actions of the few bad people but because of the indifference of the good people. The uncalled for bandh has witnessed loss of lives. We need to view this unfortunate incident with open minds. The core issue is who instigated these innocent youths to go in agitated procession when the state government had already postponed holding ULB elections in Dimapur. The writings on the walls are clear, the JCC did not object holding of ULB elections on the contrary it assured the government that it will support holding of ULB elections after the expiry of two months. The signature of the General Secretary NBCC is appended as a living witness to the MOU. Who is fooling who. The bandh has witnessed arson. Government offices burnt. Who loses? You and I. Not the agitators. Mourners are stopped, manhandled and prevented from attending funerals. The sick refused to be taken to hospital by ambulance and threatened to return home. Children not allowed to go to school. Public threatened to remain indoors. During school admission time due to closure of offices many children are unable to get admission because their parents are unable to draw salary. Many students studying outside the state are facing extreme hardship because their parents cannot send them money since the majority of the Naga Population is salary dependant. Where are we heading to? Do the majority good Naga populace continue to remain
complacent and indifferent to the evil going around us and watch our children suffer silently? In a land where we call ourselves Nagaland for Christ the protesters had no compunction to call state-wide bandh during the NBCC Annual Session 2017 held at Peren. Even church related meetings and activities held in very high esteem was not given any importance by the protesters and many delegates of the NBCC Annual Session 2017 faced much hardships to attend the same while majority of the delegates could not even turn up. Had this bandh been called by the Hindus there will be hue and cry by the Naga people calling such acts to be anti Christian etc. etc. However in this particular situation the good Naga Christians have chosen to remain silent. The need of the hour is to provide a peaceful atmosphere so that our children can prepare and appear their HSSLC and HSLC exams without any fear and intimidation. The need of the hour is to provide peaceful atmosphere to allow our children to go to schools and colleges and universities without any fear and intimidation. The time has now come for all right thinking Nagas to work for peace. I appeal to all the Naga tribes to uphold truth and justice and to sincerely work to bring back normalcy and harmony in our beloved state. Reader’s Post Sir,
Let there be peace
Things have happened in Nagaland so quickly that one cannot imagine the magnitude of loss and disaster. From ULB elections and women reservation to loss of lives and now bandh state-wise, it has been a most daunting phase for the Nagas. Talks have been going on for a change of guard in the government and hopefully things should improve. It is imperative for the government and stakeholders to come to some kind of negotiation for a better Naga future. Perhaps, Naga society needed to go through this turmoil in order to reassess and come to a better understanding in future. Let there be peace soon. Imsumeren Lkr, Dimapur

BENGALURU, Feb 18 (Agencies): US defence company Lockheed Martin said on Thursday that talks were taking place between the United States and the Indian government over its offer of setting up a factory to produce F-16 fighter planes in India. Lockheed is pushing ahead with its proposal to transfer the F-16 production line to India to supply the Indian air force, but it understands that U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration may want to take a fresh look at such plans. “The conversation at this point has progressed between governments,” Randall L Howard, Lockheed’s head of F-16 business development, told reporters at an air show in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru. “We have had very strong support up to this point from the US government.

Indore, Feb 18 (IANS): Afghanistan on Saturday dubbed Pakistan’s absence from the South Asian Speakers Summit as “unfortunate” and said Islamabad has adopted terrorism as its policy which would prove a serious threat for it. “It is unfortunate that Pakistan is not attending the summit. Dubbing terrorism as a serious threat to South Asia, Ibrahimi said that Pakistan has adopted terrorism as it policy. “Terrorism remains a threat to the South Asian countries, including Pakistan but unfortunately rulers of Pakistan have always supported terrorism.

Govt sets up 300 pulses procurement centres NEW DELHI, feb 18 (Agencies) : Amid reports of a section of farmers not getting the minimum support price for pulses, the government said on Friday it had set up more than 300 procurement centres for arhar dal. Records show that government procurement agencies are buying more than 80% of the pulses sold across mandis in Maharashtra where cash is directly transferred to the farmers’ account, and thereby, ending any scope of farmers being exploited by middlemen. In Maharashtra alone, NAFED has set up 122 procurement centres at mandis where arrival is substantial. Some of the private players told TOI that they are not buying
much since there is a stock limit. “If you keep more, you will face action. So why will any trader take such risk? How much the government agencies can buy from farmers?” asked Kamlesh Patel, managing director of Sainath Enterprises. Even officials admitted that government agencies cannot procure more than 20% of the entire production. The total production of kharif pulses is pegged at 40 lakh tonnes. “The government should increase the stock limit and en sure that it will give enough time to traders to dispose of the stock when they revise norms. It should also set the maximum price of pulses to protect consumers,” Patel said.
Makers, hospitals conspire to fleece stent recipients New Delhi, FEB 18 (AGENCIES): Apprehensions of the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) about the creation of an artificial shortage in stents appear to have come true. Major stent companies have been withdrawing the more expensive brands from hospitals claiming that they are doing it for relabelling, even though the NPPA has clarified that relabelling is not required. And hospitals have been finding ways to not pass on the entire benefit of the price cut to patients. Cardiologists in top hospitals confirmed that the more expensive stents of multinational companies are not available anymore and were removed for “relabelling”. Many hospitals have also been told by companies that they cannot provide the more expensive stents for the NPPA-set price. Multinational stent companies and their associations, like the Medical Technology Association of India (MTaI), however, claimed that they
have not withdrawn any product. They rubbished charges of creating an artificial shortage saying there was “a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the companies”. “The current hype about shortage is wrong and designed to create panic among the public to put pressure on the government. Indian stents are used in several Indian hospitals and are being exported to Europe and have been shown to be as good as any other stents in the market,” said Rajiv Nath of the Association of Indian Device Manufacturers. “If they are safe for Germans, I’m sure they are safe for Indians too.” Even the not-so-expensive imported stents, which are currently available, were being sold in large corporate hospitals for Rs 90,000 to over Rs 1 lakh prior to the price fixation. A former director of a Patnabased private hospital that is part of an all-India chain said the hospital used to charge Rs 90,000 for stents and a simi-
lar amount for the procedure, adding up to Rs 1.8 lakh. How ever, if they have to reduce the cost of stents they will up the cost of procedures, he said. “We have not received any complaints of shortage or overcharging so far,” DoP secretary Jai Priye Prakash said. He added that the government and the regulator have taken several steps to ensure compliance. The union health secretary expressed its inability to act against hospitals that flout the NPPA order as health is a state subject. However, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has initiated an informal survey to ensure compliance and availability of the implants at hospitals. “While the stakeholders are working out some solutions with the government, we will keep a check on hospitals,” said Vinita Thomas, FDA ‘s acting joint commissioner for Greater Mumbai. She added that the department may send decoy patients to hospitals, besides studying bills.
Kochi hospital performs dual live-donor transplant Kochi, Feb 18 (IANS): In a first, a 20-month-old girl, weighing just seven kgs, got a new lease of life after doctors here performed a complex surgery where live-donor liver and kidney transplant took place simultaneously. This is the first time in the world that a dual live-donor liver and kidney transplant surgery has been performed in such a small child, said Mathew

Claiming huge support in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the first and the second phase of polling in the state, Shah further stated that the indication was clear that a BJP government was “on its way in UP”. wherein the deficiency of a liver enzyme called AGXT leads to abnormal spike in blood oxalate levels, which in turn causes permanent kidney damage. The doctors determined that the only treatment option for Parvathy was a combined liver and kidney transplantation. Parvathy was put on
an intense nutritional rehabilitation programme to attain a pre-transplant weight of 10 kilograms, along with dialysis. However, she stopped gaining weight due to multiple complications, which posed a major challenge for the surgery, as children less than 10 kilograms do not have adequate space to accept an adult kidney.

To neutralize them, Centre must frame a national policy to promote and propagate national anthem, national song and national flag,”it said. The bench, however, said Article 51A refers to only national anthem and national flag. Lu c k n ow, F eb 1 8 (IANS); The land of the nawabs here in the Uttar Pradesh capital is all set to elect nine lawmakers for the 17th state assembly on Sunday. And for all the political parties, it is a contest to watch out for! The parliamentary constituency of former Prime Minister and BJP stalwart Atal Bihari Vajpayee for five terms, Lucknow, has been a saffron loyal, with the BJP making deep inroads in and around it. The city however went overwhelmingly with the Samajwadi Party (SP) in 2012. With seven legislators of the SP elected from here in the last assembly, the ruling party is trying hard to repeat and even better that past performance. The two SP candidates from patron Mulayam Singh Yadav’s clan - nephew Anurag Yadav and daughter-in-law Aparna Yadav, are pitching in on the family name and development by the Akhilesh Yadav government. Lucknow Metro Rail, the Gomti River Front project, IT city and the AgraLucknow Expressway are being highlighted by the ruling party candidates.

Mumbai, Feb 18 (IANS); Warning that midterm assembly elections in Maharashtra were “inevitable”, Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar on Saturday said there was no question of his party propping up the Bharatiya Janata Part-Shiv Sena alliance in the state. Pawar told the media that he was even ready to put down his decision in writing and submit a copy to the state Governor. “I can right now give a letter to this effect and forward to the Governor. But even Shiv Sena should submit a similar letter to the Governor and make it public,” Pawar said, putting the ball in the Sena court over the fate of the government headed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. nata Party in the state and the Centre, saying the Maharashtra government was “on a notice period”, indicating it may withdraw support after the outcome of the civic elections on February 23. Soon after the 2014 October assembly elections, the NCP had extended outside support to the BJP’s minority government as Shiv Sena sat in the opposition for a month. Around a month later, the Sena left the opposition benches to join the BJP as an ally. The NCP chief had then justified its decision to provide external support to the BJP “in the interest of political stability and to avoid a fresh round of elections”. In the last assembly elections, Maharashtra threw up a fractured house as all the main parties had contested separately and against each other. Attacking the Centre for demonetisation, Pawar said the November 8 move had resulted in massive losses in the farming sector and rural areas, besides job losses in the economy. Questioning Fadnavis’ claims on the “transparency agenda”, Pawar demanded to know how the BJP could spend so much money on advertisements and publicity for the ongoing civic elections in Maharashtra.

Taking into account AG’s atatement, the bench said that issue needed to be debated and decided. “In the earlier writ petition, a contention was advanced by Attorney General pertaining to schools and, therefore, as far as the prayer relating to schools on every working day is concerned, it is kept alive,” the bench said. The court passed the order on a PIL filed by Delhi BJP spokesperson Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay seeking court’s direction to Centre to frame a national policy to promote and propagate national anthem, national song and national flag in spirit of the Article 51A of the constitution. Senior advocate Vikas Singh, appearing for the petitioner, contended that a policy was needed to make citizens aware about the importance of national song and national anthem to instil a sense of nationalism and patriotism among people. “Democracy would indeed be hollow if it fails to

Urjit Patel talks of rate hike possibility
Urjit Patel
M um b a i , F e b 1 8 (Agencies): RBI governor Urjit Patel, who surprised markets by announcing the monetary policy committee’s decision to hold rates, has now said that interest rates might go up. Explaining what the RBI meant by shifting its stance to neutral, Patel on Friday told CNBC TV18 that the MPC now has the option of hiking rates depending on the direction of inflation. The governor indicated that there is little headroom to ease rates, pointing out that the MPC is committed to move closer to the 4% inflation target. “We needed to look beyond the headline number to see where the kind of disinflation that is needed to take
us towards 4% would come from, and the committee felt that inflation, excluding food and fuel, is something that has been stubborn since September-October and has shown a little sign of coming decisively below 5%,” said Patel. According to Patel, the RBI decided to ‘look through’ the current level of low inflation as crash in vegetable prices, triggered partly by demonetisation, was temporary. Also, global commodity prices are expected to push up inflation. “Internationally, commodity, food and base metal prices have firmed up. Crude prices continue to be in the mid-50s and are staying there for some time given the data of past few months. So, the MPC noted that while inflation will be in the range of 4-4.5% in the first half of FY18, it then increases to 4.5-5%.” The governor warned of global volatility arising out of US President Donald Trump’s protectionist policies. “The change in policies from the largest economy in the world is something that the world will have to start getting used to:.

The surge comes even as the government expects growth to slip to 6.5-6.75% in the current fiscal year from 7.9% in FY16 due to global factors and demonetisation. In the February 1 Budget, the Centre announced its decision to abolish Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) and promised more reforms to make things easier for overseas investors. “Increased FDI inflows to India is also a function of the economic situation and spare capacity available in other countries,” said Madan Sabnavis, chief economist, Credit Analysis and Research Ltd. “There are more opportunities in India and now a lot more effort to ease processes here.” Experts said that investors are waiting for a turnaround in the fortunes of sectors such as infrastructure and pharmaceuticals, which could encourage a further surge in overseas interest.

NEW DELHI, Feb 18 (Agencies): Overseas investment in India is likely to surge to a record in the year ending March despite temporary growth hiccups ascribed to the currency swap programme. This underscores India’s status as an island of economic stability, especially as foreign direct investment (FDI) flows worldwide slumped 13% last year amid uncertainty thanks in part to a backlash against globalisation. India’s FDI in the April-December period rose 22% to $35.8 billion from the year earlier. With three months to go for the fiscal year end, the government expects fresh inflows into equity to top the $40 billion India got in FY16. Total FDI, which includes inflows into unincor-

Trump contradicts himself
Trump’s criticism of NATO as “obsolete”, his praise for Britain’s decision to leave the European Union as well as his softer approach towards Russia unnerved Washington’s allies. But over the past week in Europe, key members of his administration have pressed the message that the United States is not retreating into isolation but remains committed to its global role.
At NATO in Brussels on Thursday, Defence Secretary James Mattis said Russia must first “prove itself ” and respect international law before there can be any improvement in relations strained to breaking point by Moscow’s Ukraine intervention and annexation of Crimea. Mattis said the transatlantic bond was “as strong as I’ve ever seen it”, and stressed America remained “rock solid” in support of Article 5 -NATO’s core “one for all, all for one” collective-defence tenet. Likewise, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was cautious in his dealings with Russia. Following his first sitdown with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Bonn on Thursday, Tiller-
Media ‘enemy of the people’: Trump
WASHINGTON, FEB 18 (PTI): The media is an “enemy of the American people”, US President Donald Trump has said, stepping up his attack on newspapers and channels that have been critical of his presidency. “The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @NBCNews, @ABC, @ CBS, @CNN) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!” Trump tweeted. His scathing attack on the media came a day after he asserted that his administration is “running like a fine-tuned machine” and there is “no chaos” inside the White House as being reported by the “dishonest” media. The 70-year-old Trump had said he resented picking up newspapers and turning on the television to hear reports that his White House was in chaos. Trump, who has prolifically used the medium

of Twitter and Facebook to convey his views and react to news stories, had said that a lot of people are happy about his administration and its performance since his inauguration on January 20. However, his political opponents and the media is not that happy, he said at his fourth news conference in a
week during which he displayed a sense of anger and grievance rarely vented by a President in public. Trump’s latest tweet criticising the media went viral as within a few hours it was retweeted more than 28,000 times, forwarded 53,000 times and liked by 85,000 people. In reference to the news conference, Trump in another tweet said, “Thank you for all of the nice statements on the Press Conference yesterday. Rush Limbaugh said one of greatest ever. Fake media not happy!” “’One of the most effective press conferences I’ve ever seen!’ says Rush Limbaugh. Many agree. Yet FAKE MEDIA calls it differently! Dishonest,” he said. Meanwhile, Fox News in an opinion poll said voters, albeit by a slim margin of 45 to 42 per cent, find the White House more truthful than the media.

Exasperated and worried by Trump’s calling into question long-standing foreign policy givens, Europe’s top politicians have warned Washington not to take transatlantic ties for granted. They work both ways, they said, and benefit the United States as much as Europe. Merkel on Saturday warned countries not to retreat from the international cooperation which she says is the only way to solve global problems. “In a year in which we see unimaginable challenges we can either work together or retreat to our individual roles. I hope that we will find a common position,” she said.
Syria accuses Turkey of building wall DAMASCUS, FEB 18 (IANS): Syria has accused Turkey of bringing in equipment to build a separation wall in northern Syria. The Syrian Foreign Ministry in a letter of condemnation to the UN on Friday said the Turkish government’s aggression on Syrian soil was incessant, Xinhua news agency reported. Turkish forces and border control guards on January 11 brought in heavy machines and trucks in northern Syria, particularly in Hasakah province, began making a dirt road and digging a trench while installing cement pillars to build a separation wall. Three days later, the Turkish forces entered Syrian territory at a depth of 250 metres in Arab Tuma, Aleppo province, and began making a two km road to build a separation barrier in that area.
Expect more fake news from Russia: NATO Gen
MUNICH, FEB 18 (AGENCIES): Russia was behind a false report of a rape by German soldiers in Lithuania that was intended to undermine support for NATO’s new eastern force, a senior NATO general said on Saturday, warning Europe to expect more such “fake news”. Petr Pavel, who heads NATO’s military committee, said he also hoped to hold the first telephone call in more than two years with Russia’s military chiefs in coming weeks. There he will outline why NATO believes its biggest military build-up since the end of the Cold War is not a threat to the Kremlin. Pavel, a Czech army general, said a claim that Ger man-speaking men raped a 15-year-old girl last week in a Lithuanian town close to a German army barracks “was not based on real events”. An email making the claim was sent to the speaker of Lithuanian’s parliament on Tuesday. “It is clearly fake news and I believe we should expect more of this,” Pavel, told Reuters in an interview, citing conversations with the German and Lithuanian defense ministers. “Russia is not pleased by the deployment of NATO

troops closer to its border so it will likely use legal means, such as propaganda and they will try to influence public opinion against the deployments,” Pavel said. “It will get stronger ... but we will be transparent, consistent.” Russia has not responded to the assertion that it was behind the Lithuania report. European intelligence agencies have said Moscow is also seeking to destabilize governments and influence elections with cyber attacks and fake news. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Saturday she would like to discuss the issue with Russia, but it was questionable whether the problem could be successfully addressed before European elections
this year. Last week Russia denied meddling in campaigning for April and May’s presidential election in France.
Potential spillover
Worried since Russia’s 2014 seizure of Ukraine’s Crimea that Moscow could invade Poland or the Baltic states, NATO is bolstering its eastern flank with troops, war games and warehoused U.S. equipment ready for a rapid response force of up to 40,000 personnel. The first German troops have arrived in Lithuania, where Berlin is leading a battalion of some 1,000 troops. From around April, Britain will head the deterrent force in Estonia, while Canada is deploying in Lat-
via and U.S. troops are arriving in Poland and across the Baltics. Russia says the alliance build-up threatens the stability of central Europe. It has some 330,000 troops amassed in its Western military district around Moscow, NATO believes. Pavel said the Western military alliance NATO has ways, known in military parlance as strategic communication, to counter Russian disinformation and he did not expect Moscow to be able to generate popular protests against the deployments. “The population in these countries are rightly afraid of a continuation of these events, a potential spillover into their countries. They have been asking for years for some kind of visible reassurance,” Pavel said, referring to Crimea. NATO will also reassure Moscow directly that the eastern deterrent is a measured response to Crimea and what NATO says is Russia’s direct support for rebels in eastern Ukraine. Pavel said contact between NATO’s top commanders and their Russian counterparts could restart in the next few weeks with a telephone call with the chief of the Russian General Staff Valery Gerasimov.
ISLAMABAD, FEB 18 (IANS): Over two weeks after placing Jamaat-ud Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed under house arrest, Pakistan has included the name of the Mumbai attacks mastermind in the Fourth Schedule of the A n t i - Te r r o r i s m A c t (ATA). The Punjab government has listed Saeed and his close aide Qazi Kashif ’s name under the ATA, Dawn online quoted an official as saying. Abdullah Obaid from Faisalabad, Zafar Iqbal and Abdur Rehman Abid from Muridke were also added to the list. The JuD chief ’s name has also been put on the exit control list and barred from leaving the country. Saeed and the four men had been placed under house arrest on January 30 in Lahore. According to a senior police official, the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) had added their names to the list of the 1,450 ‘fourth schedulers’ after an order by the country’s Interior Ministry. They were identified as “active members of the Ja m a a t - u d D awa a n d Falah-e-Insaniyat”. The ministry directed the CTD to “move and take necessary action” against the five.

KUALA LUMPUR, FEB 18 (AGENCIES): Malaysian police said on Saturday they had arrested a North Korean man in connection with the murder of the estranged half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, as a diplomatic spat over his body escalated. Kim Jong Nam died this week after being assaulted at Kuala Lumpur International Airport with what was thought to be a fast-acting poison. South Korean and U.S. officials have said he was assassinated by North Korean agents. Malaysian police said the latest arrest connected with the murder was made on Friday night, and the suspect was identified as Ri Jong Chol, born on May 6, 1970. “He is suspected to be
involved in the death of a North Korean male,” read the statement. Two female suspects, one an Indonesian and the other carrying Vietnamese travel documents, have already been arrested. While a Malaysian man has been detained. At least three more suspects are at large, government sources have said. Kim Jong Nam, the eldest son of the late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, had spoken out publicly against his family’s dynastic control of the isolated, nuclear-armed North Korea. South Korea’s intelligence agency told lawmakers in Seoul that Kim had been living with his second wife in the Chinese territory of Macau, under China’s protection. He had been at the Kuala Lumpur airport to
Diplomatic row
North Korea said in the early hours of Saturday that it would categorically reject Malaysia’s autopsy report on the death of Kim Jong Nam, and accused Malaysia of “colluding with outside forces”, in a veiled reference to rival nation South Korea. Malaysia hit back by saying the country’s rules must be followed. The foreign ministry has yet to make any comment. The case threatens to weaken North Korea’s ties with Malaysia, one of the few countries that has maintained good diplomatic relations with Pyongyang. Kim Jong Nam was assaulted at the low cost terminal of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Monday with what is believed to be fast acting poison before he could board a flight to Macau.
Dutch far-right leader kicks off poll campaign SPIJKENISSE (NETHERLANDS), FEB 18 (AGENCIES): Anti-Islam populist Geert Wilders has kicked off his campaign Saturday for Dutch parliamentary elections, amid tight security and intense media interest in a bluecollar town near Rotterdam. Surrounded by police and trailed by a small group of protesters and a much larger throng of journalists, Wilders handed out fliers and posed for selfies with supporters at a market in Spijkenisse. “The elections for sure are historical. It’s a choice that the people of Holland can make on March 15 whether to give their country away more and more or to get their country back to themselves. To make the Netherlands ours again,” Wilders told dozens of reporters before making his way around the town’s small marketplace. Wilders, whose party now has 12 lawmakers in the 150-seat lower house of Parliament, is riding high in polls, with most putting him narrowly ahead of the right-wing party of twoterm Prime Minister Mark Rutte. However, it remains to be seen if Wilders could form a governing coalition if he wins the popular vote

on March 15. Mainstream parties shun him because of his hard-line anti-Islam views and have ruled out working with him. While the Dutch economy is now growing strongly after tough austerity measures by Rutte’s ruling coalition over the last four years, Wilders says his supporters are not feeling it in their wallets. He said people have to pay “more for the rent of their house, pay more when it comes to the public health system. Their pensions are being cut and they feel nothing about the better

Pence reassures European allies
MUNICH, FEB 18 (AGENCIES): US VicePresident Mike Pence Saturday pledged an “unwavering” commitment to transatlantic ties, in an emphatic reassurance to allies including German Chancellor Angela Merkel who pleaded with nations not to go it alone. Capping a week of whirlwind diplomacy by American officials who have descended on Europe to calm nerves rattled by Donald Trump, Pence underlined the United States’ devotion to its old friends. “The United States is and will always be your greatest ally. Be assured that President Trump and our people are truly devoted to our transatlantic union,” he told European leaders including Merkel at the Munich Security Conference. “The promise to share the burden of our defence has gone unfulfilled for too many, for too long and it erodes the very foundation of our alliance,” he warned, stressing that “the time has come to do more”. At the same time, he did not go further and threaten, as Trump had done, to walk away if the allies failed to pay their way. The US, he said, will boost defence spending significantly, “to defend our nation and our treaty

NKorean assassin Oscars 2017: what’s up for best foreign language film? claims innocence O n Oscar night the winner of the award for Best Foreign Language film probably won’t get much publicity - it seldom does. Yet compared to only a few years ago the category is no longer a byword among Oscar voters for baffling obscurity. And this year one of the films shortlisted is already lined up for a Hollywood remake. Here’s a look at this year’s nominees:
Land of Mine
O
ne of the suspects arrested for the murder of the estranged half-brother of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un was tricked into thinking she was part of a TV prank show, police say. Kim Jong-nam was assassinated on Monday (February 13) at Kuala Lumpur airport in Malaysia. The eldest son of late North Korea leader Kim Jong-il, Kim Jong-nam was initially considered the heir to his father but reportedly lived in exile outside the country since 2003. In 2001, he was arrested for attempting to enter Japan on a fake passport to visit Tokyo Disneyland. Indonesian national Siti Aisyah, 25, has been arrested for suspected involvement in the killing but
Indonesia’s national police chief Tito Karnavian has told reporters that Malaysian authorities believe she was duped into the act. Karnavian said that Aisyah and another woman were paid to perform pranks that involved spraying strangers with water. “Such an action was done three or four times and they were given a few dollars for it, and with the last target, Kim Jongnam, allegedly there were dangerous materials in the sprayer,” Karnavian said. “She was not aware that it was an assassination attempt by alleged foreign agents.” A second female suspect, captured on CCTV wearing a t-shir t with ‘LOL’ written on it, was arrested on Wednesday (February 15) in possession of a Vietnamese passport.
Country: Denmark, Language: German with some Danish and English Denmark’s track record in this category: 11 nominations including 3 wins Director: Martin Zandvleet Story: Immediately after World War Two on Denmark’s west coast, a group of teenage German soldiers are to clear some of the two million landmines which Germany deployed on beaches and along the shoreline to deter an Allied invasion. They are supervised by the Danish Sergeant Rasmussen who at first seems filled with violence. Will it win? Voted Best Danish Film at last year’s Danish film awards. It’s well acted both by Roland Moller as the sergeant and by the young actors who play the Germans. When early on Rasmussen

delivers a savage beating for no clear reason, we guess that the story will see him humanised by his contact with the soldiers he appears to despise. A couple of incidents late in the film seem there only for dramatic convenience and don’t convince. The scenes of defusing mines are impressively tense and hard to watch.
A Man Called Ove
Country: Sweden, Language: Swedish Sweden’s Track Record: 14 nominations including three wins (all for Ingmar Bergman) Director: Hannes Holm Story: Ove is a cranky old widower living alone. He expends a lot of energy trying to police the behaviour of his neighbours, who treat him warily. Ove’s not pleased when the house opposite is taken by a new family: he finds it hard to accept the warm-hearted Parvaneh (who’s Iranian) and her Swedish husband. Yet a relationship builds and in flashback we encounter the younger Ove, a man more open to life’s possibilities who marries the beautiful Sonja. Will it win? The film is attractively shot and Rolf Lassgard makes Ove sympathetic as an old man without totally sentimentalising him. Some of the humour is a bit clunky and the process of discovering Ove’s latent nice guy with-
in runs along predictable lines. But in the extensive flashbacks Filip Berg and Ida Engvoll make an attractive and likeable young couple which gives the film an unexpected sweetness.
The Salesman
Country: Iran, Language: Persian Iran’s track record: 2 nominations including a win for the same director in 2011 Director: Asghar Farhadi Story: Emad and Rana are middle-class inhabitants of Tehran: he teaches but their joint passion is acting. After a tip-off from a fellow actor they find a new apartment. It seems a good move until they discover more about the previous occupant who left one room locked. As they work on a production of Arthur
Vulnerability is a woman’s strength: Esha

ollywood actress Esha Gupta, who essays an interesting character in the forthcoming actionthriller “Commando 2: The Black Money Trail”, believes that women have the power to be vulnerable and strong at the same time. Asked about the projection of Indian women as strong in Hindi cinema, Esha told IANS here: “I think vulnerability is the strength of a woman. A woman is as strong as to give birth of a child and nurture. A man cannot do that. Just because we women are expressive and show our softer side with love and affection, does not mean we are not strong. “A world without love would be only war, and
we women make the balance happen. Love and forgiveness is stronger than hatred. As it is getting accepted and society is changing with the thought, it is reflecting in our cinema.” Wi t h o u t r eve a l i n g much about her character in the film, Esha said: “I play Maria, who is almost like a Bond girl, a strong lady with brain and beauty. I enjoyed playing the character. The only thing that I missed out is doing action sequences in the film.” Marking her Bollywood debut with the 2012 film “Jannat 2”, Esha went on to feature in films like “Jannat 2”, “Raaz 3”, “Chakravyuh”, “Humshakals” and “Rustom”.
Miller’s play Death of a Salesman, the couple’s relationship becomes more tense. There is a violent incident and Emad becomes obsessed with revenge. Will it win? It may be that no film can overtake the German nominee this year. But Farhadi has written a superbly tense and unsettling screenplay whose mastery of dread Alfred Hitchcock would have relished. The couple are superbly played by Taraneh Alidoosti and Shahab Hosseini. Previous winner Farhadi has indicated he will refuse to attend the Oscar ceremony in protest at President Trump trying to restrict Iranians entering the USA: could this create a sympathy vote for him? The most memorable of this year’s films.
Germany’s track Record: 18 nominations (including one for East Germany) and a total of 3 wins Director: Maren Ade Stor y: Winfried (who adopts the name Toni) has a distant relationship with his daughter Ines, a business consultant working in Bucharest. He decides to leave Germany to pay her a visit, not wholly to her pleasure. Ines is climbing in her career and finds some of her eccentric father’s activities a pain. But she tries to tolerate him and passes him off to colleagues as her life coach. A late scene suggests they have re-established some kind of family intimacy, but the question is left open. Will it win? The film got a lot of attention at last year’s Cannes Festival - often along the lines of ‘Amazing - a German comedy!’. The fact that large sections are in English won’t harm its chances and it’s built up a head of steam which may well grab it the Oscar. The simple description comedy underplays the story’s ambiguities and some audiences will be surprised that certain scenes are far from comic. The film’s half an hour too long. A Hollywood remake has been announced, to star Jack Nicholson and Kristen Wiig. Could that incline Academy voters to back Toni Erdmann Country: Germany, Lan- the original? The Academy guage: German, English Awards are held on 26 February. and Romanian.
Country: Australia ,Language: Nivhaal (The film was shot on location on Vanuatu) Australia’s Track Record: First nomination in this category Directors: Martin Butler and Bentley Dean Story: On a Pacific island, Dain and Wawa live in a primitive village where life is virtually untouched by the modern world. The spirited young Selin watches as her sister Wawa is betrothed to a man outside the village - but Wawa wants to be with Dain. The lovers run away. Selin follows as the villagers set off to find her sister - and tragedy looms. Will it win? The least mainstream of this year’s nominees is exactly the kind of film the Academy hoped would benefit from reforming the voting system. It’s a well-shot and mainly well-acted story filmed on a South Pacific island far from the usual movie-world support systems. The story, with its echo of Romeo and Juliet, is engrossing and in its early stages charming. Locations are attractive without resembling an ad for upmarket beach holidays. It won’t take the Oscar but it’s worth catching.
Tamil celebrities upset with TN’s situation
T
amil actors such as Kamal Haasan, Siddharth and Arvind Swami among others have reacted strongly over Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami’s winning the confidence vote in the state assembly on Saturday.
Palaniswami, who was sworn in on Thursday as Chief Minister, won by 122 voice votes on Saturday. He belongs to the AIADMK faction led by party General Secretary V.K. Sasikala, who is currently serving a four-year jail term in Bengaluru in disproportionate assets case. Commenting on the concept of confidence votes, “Roja” actor Arvind Swami tweeted: “None will accept a vote of confidence if the MLAs don’t represent the people’s views. For that they have to meet people, not party in a resort.” Swami also demanded re-election. “In my opinion, the
only solution that is acceptable under the circumstances is a re-election. This is not the people’s mandate,” he wrote. Siddharth, without mincing his words, reacted very strongly. “Give Sasikala a laptop in jail. Save transport cost (our money) for Edappadi K. Palaniswami and his gang for four years. Time to put more salt in our food,” he tweeted. Actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan slyly described the current political climate as a mockery of democracy. “There you go. Seems like we have another CM. Jai de-mockcrazy,” Haasan wrote.

merican Idol isn’t definitely coming back to television, but the producers of the singing competition show have taken one big step for the warblers out there. On Thursday, U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge Stuart Bernstein blessed an amended agreement between 19 Entertainment and FremantleMedia Limited. According to court papers, the agreement “memorializes the parties’ intention to re-launch American Idol on American television by seeking a new license agreement with a broad-
caster, network or other platform subject to various terms and conditions.” FremantleMedia has reportedly been pitching NBC in recent weeks on the reboot. First, however, FremantleMedia had to come to a deal with the show’s other producer, 19 Entertainment, which filed Chapter 11 last April shortly after the fifteenth season of the show. Five months after the bankruptcy filing, deals with lenders reduced about $385 million in debt, and 19’s reorganization plan was approved.

Juventus extended their lead at the top of Serie A to 10 points on Friday evening.
Turin, Feb 18 (Agencies): Paulo Dybala orchestrated his former side’s destruction as Juventus beat relegationthreatened Palermo 4-1 to move 10 points clear in Serie A on Friday. Dybala, who also hit the post, scored two and set up another against the side that brought him to Italy from Argentina. The 23-year-old didn’t celebrate after his goals. Juventus, which is marching towards an unprecedented sixth successive Serie A title, extended its lead over second-placed Roma, which hosts Torino on Sunday. consecutive home wins and leaves it full of confidence ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 match against Porto. “Out of respect to my f o r m e r t e a m m a t e s and Palermo fans, I didn’t celebrate. I had three great years at Palermo,” Dybala said. “I thanked (Gonzalo) Higuain for the great assist he did but it wasn’t a celebration. “ We ’ v e t a k e n a n important step forwards but we didn’t play very well … we will have to change our attitude and mentality for the Champions League because it won’t be easy playing against Porto.” Paler mo remained 18th, eight points from
safety. Dybala, who moved to Juventus for 32 million euros (then $36 million) in 2015, almost scored in the fifth minute but saw his free kick come off the left post. Juventus did take the lead eight minutes later when Gonzalo Higuain got on the end of a free kick and, although he was denied by Palermo goalkeeper Josip Posavec, Claudio Marchisio fired the rebound into the roof of the net. Dybala was successful with a free kick five minutes from halftime, curling it into the top right corner. Higuain moved top of the goalscoring charts with his 19th league goal of the season shortly after the hour
mark, deftly chipping the ball over Posavec and in off the base of the left post after a delightful through ball from Dybala. Higuain has scored one more goal than Roma forward Edin Dzeko and two more than Torino’s Andrea Belotti. He has also just two fewer than the entire Palermo team. Higuain returned the favor for his Argentina teammate in the 89th. He stole the ball off Palermo defender Edoardo Goldaniga and raced downfield before unselfishly backheeling it toward Dybala, who drilled it into the bottom right corner. Ivaylo Chochev headed in Palermo’s consolation in stoppage time.
World beat US in Rising Stars Challenge NE W O R L E A NS , Feb 18 (Agencies): Canada’s Jamal Murray made three straight from beyond the arc in the final three minutes to power the World team to a 150-141 win over the US squad in the Rising Stars Challenge game on Friday. Murray, who plays for the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, scored 27 of his team-high 36 points in the second half at the Smoothie King Center arena. The inter national team was also led by New Orleans Pelicans guard Buddy Hield, a native of the Bahamas, who had 28 points, and New York Knicks center Kristaps Porzingis, a native of Latvia, who added 24. The US team was led by Charlotte Hornets center Frank Kaminsky with 33 points and Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns with 24. This was the third year the teams of first- and second-year players were divided up on the basis of US versus international. The US and World split the first two games. There were a record 113 international players on opening-night rosters for the 2016-17 NBA regular season.

Winning the Freestyle Wrestling World Cup title for the sixth time in a row, Iran defeated USA in the 2017 final match.
Kermanshah, Feb 18 (Agencies): As the US and Iran wrangle over sanctions and missile tests, their athletes grappled in the ring on Friday in wrestling’s Freestyle World Cup final, with the Iranians emerging victorious. Iran won the tournament in five out of eight weight categories following three days of bouts in the Kurdish-majority city of Kermanshah. Iranian wrestlers won the first four lightweight categories, but local fans were shocked when Iranians then lost the next three rounds. That piled the pressure on Komeil Ghasemi as he faced a showdown with American Nick Gwiazdowski in the final 125-kilo (275-pound) weight class. Ghasemi won the round five nil to deliver

T h i s ye a r ’s e ve n t wa s ove r s h a d owe d b y political tensions between Tehran and Washington, which have spiked since President Donald Trump’s inauguration. The American team’s 13 wrestlers were initially denied visas to compete following Tr ump’s ban on travellers from seven predominantly Muslim countries, including Iran. But they were subsequently allowed to travel after the ban was halted by a US federal court. “I’m very thankful for the warm reception we received today and even
more grateful that this trip was made possible,” wrote two-time world champion and Olympic gold medallist Jo r d a n B u r r o u g h s o n Instagram. “We are very happy to be here in Iran and ready to compete!” he added, under an image showing him surrounded by Iranian wrestling fans wielding cellphones at the airport. Wrestling is a popular sport in Iran, and local media reported fans queueing outside the stadium for tickets to the final bouts. “So much love and respect for USA and wrestling here in Kermanshah, Iran,” wrote another wrestler, Richard Perry, on Instagram. “ D o n’ t b e l i e ve everything you hear or read in the media. Wrestling transcends!!”
NEW DELHI, Feb 18 (PTI): Sandeep Kumar of Haryana smashed his own national record en route to winning the gold medal in the gruelling men’s 50km event of the National Race Walking Championships on Saturday. Sandeep clocked three hours 55 minutes and 59.05 seconds in a brilliant performance to win the race and qualify for the London World Championships in August. The earlier national record which stood in his name was 3:56:22 which he clocked in the IAAF World Race Walking Cup at Taicang, China in May 2014. Services athletes Jitender Singh (4:02:11.58) and Chandan Singh (4:04:18.41) won the silver and bronze respectively in the energy-sapping race. Both Jitender and Chandan also booked their berths for the August 4-13 World Championships. The entry standard for the men’s 50km race walk event for the World Championships is 4:06:00. Sandee p, who had finished fourth in 2014 Asian Games, was richer by Rs 50,000, while Jitender and Chandan got Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively as prize money. A total of Rs 4 lakh was kept as prize money by the sponsors Max Bupa. The Championships, however, lost some of the sheen as top women’s 20km race walker Khushbeer Kaur and her men’s counterpart Manish Singh Rawat pulled out at the last minute without informing the Athletics Federation of India.
Guardiola ‘won’t return to Barcelona”

Guardiola, who won 14 trophies in four years as Barcelona’s head coach between 2008 and 2012, has r uled himself out as a possible successor to Luis Enrique, who is under pressure at Camp Nou after Tuesday’s 4-0 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. “I will never go back to Barcelona to be coach there. My period there is gone,” he said. The 46-year-old also says “Barcelona are still the best team in the world” and has backed Enrique to turn things around at Camp Nou. “ W h e n yo u h ave dominated world football, it’s normal that the people expect you to keep up that level, but my advice to you, knowing Luis and the players a little, is not to talk too much, because they will be back and prove you wrong,” he continued. “They’ve done it over the years, dominating
football for 10 years, and they continue to be the best team in the world.” C i t y f a c e Championship side Huddersfield at the John S m i t h ’s S t a d i u m o n Saturday, and Guardiola admits “it’s not perfect” that a rugby league match was played at the ground just 43 hours before this afternoon’s FA Cup fifth round tie. “It’s not perfect. London, Feb 18 (Agencies): Mo Farah will end his indoor running career with a 5,000 metres at Saturday’s Birmingham grand prix, the British Olympic champion said on Friday. “I think tomorrow will be my last track race indoors,” Farah, 33, told a news conference. The two-times Olympic 5,000 and 10,000 metres champion eventually plans to turn to road racing as he continues his athletics career. He said last year that 2017 would probably be his final season of running on the track outdoors. Farah, Britain’s most successful track athlete, defended his Olympic 5,000 and 10,000 metres titles in Rio de Janeiro last year. He has also won five outdoor world championships.

today. Both Akhil and Jitender are former Asian Championships bronzemedallists and serving DSPs in the Haryana Police. They turned professional after getting permission from their department. Both the boxers will be trained at an academy being developed by IOS in Gurgaon and a trainer from Manchester would be joining them by the end of this month. “Akhil and Jitu are our prime boxers after Vijender and there will be a trainer from Manchester coming over to Delhi by this month end to oversee their training,” said IOS MD Neerav Tomar. “Of the six fights that Akhil and Jitu will compete in this year, two will be international. We have big
plans for them and they would be training abroad as well,” he added. Speaking of his training regimen, Akhil said he has been putting in a couple of hours daily as of now but the intensity will increase in the coming days. “I have understood the difference between a trainer and coach. I have understood that a coach’s job is technical knowhow. It is the trainer who sweats it out,” Akhil said. The fight night on April 1 will see Vijender, a WBO Asia Pacific Super Middleweight champion, take on WBO Oriental champion and Chinese No.1 Zulpikar Maimaitiali. The titles of the two boxers will be on the line and the winner will end up with both the belts.

Nathan Lyon struck twice before Tea as India A got off to a jittery start.
Mumbai, Feb 18 (IANS): Half-centuries by Mitchell Marsh and Matthew Wade coupled with an excellent bowling performance enabled Australians to take the upper hand on the penultimate day of their three-day tie against India A here on Saturday. The in-form Shreyas Iyer was batting on 85 with Rishabh Pant on three at the other end as India A trailed by 293 runs at the close. The morning session
was dominated by the Australians as Marsh and Wade managed to find the boundary ropes at regular intervals. Wa d e n o t c h e d up 64 runs, hitting nine boundaries during his 89ball stay in the middle before being dismissed by off-spinner Akhil Herwadkar. M a r s h wa s i n a n equally belligerent mood at the other end, scoring 75 runs off 159 balls with 11
hits to the fence and six. Pacer Navdeep Saini was the most successful among the India A bowlers with figures of 2/42. Hardik Pandya, Shahbaz Nadeem and Herwadkar bagged a wicket each. In reply, India A were off to a rocky start in their first innings. Herwadkar was the first to depart following a successful caught and bowled attempt by Lyon. The Australian off-spinner dismissed the other India A opener Priyank Panchal as well before Ankit Bawne was trapped leg before by Bird. Iyer and Pandya then tried to bring the innings back on track with a 52-run stand before the latter was caught behind off Bird’s bowling. Brief scores: Australians (First Innings): 469/7 declared (Steven Smith 107 retired out, Shaun Marsh 104 retired out, Mitchell Marsh 75, Matthew Wade 64; Navdeep Saini 2/42) vs India A (First Innings): 176/4 (Shreyas Iyer 85 batting; Jackson 2/15, Nathan Lyon 2/72)

slips to tied- Shillong Lajong to take on Chennai City FC Mohun Bagan return to winning ways Aditi 56th at Women’s Australian Open
Mohun Bagan beat DSK Shivajians 3-1 in the I-League encounter.
Kolk at a , F e b 1 8 (IANS): Mohun Bagan rode Balwant Singh’s two goals in two minutes to edge past DSK Shivajians 3-1 and go level on points with cross-town football rivals East Bengal at the top of the I-League table at the Rabindra Sarovar Sadium on Saturday. Balwant scored in the 42nd and 44th minute after Milan Singh had given the visitors a well-deserved lead in the 33rd minute. Yusa Katsumi put the match beyond doubt with a goal from the spot in the 89th minute. Bagan are now on 21 points from nine outings while Shivajians remained sixth with 10
points from the same number of ties. The visitors wore a defensive look packing their midfield with five men. The first real chance of the half fell to Shivajians when Sumeet Passi swivelled sharply to find Quero who drew keeper Debjit Mazumdar out of his line and save well. Rightly, the Dave Rogers side took the lead. Milan tucked in from close after the impressive Quero beat Eduardo Ferreira with his trickery and pace to set him up. T h r e e m i nu t e s t o half-time, Bagan equalised as full-back Pritam Kotal whipped in a cross from the
right which Subrata Paul got a hand to but only as far as Balwant who nodded in. There was more joy for the green and maroon brigade in the 44th minute when Balwant scored a peach of a goal from another Kotal cross. In the second half, Bagan looked a completely different side with Norde operating in full tilt. The Haitian international first set up Duffy and then Katsumi but both failed to do anything of note. In the dying minutes, substitute Jeje was brought down inside the box by Gouramangi with Katsumi making no mistake from the resultant penalty.
ADELAIDE, Feb 18 (PTI): Aditi Ashok suffered a nightmarish four-hole streak in blustery conditions with four bogeys between sixth and ninth holes on the front as she carded five-over 78 in the third round of the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open at Royal Adelaide Golf Club. Aditi, who shot 73-70 in first two rounds at the Par-73 Royal Adelaide Golf Club, is now tied-56th in her first appearance in a LPGA event in 2017. Aditi was tied-39 after second round. Aditi opened with a bogey, but made amends with a birdie on third, only to drop four in a row from sixth to ninth. Further birdies on 13th and 14th and a birdie on 17th was a small consolation. American Lizette Salas shot a superb 2-under par 71 on a blustery Adelaide day to take a two-stroke lead at 10under 209 into tomorrow’s final round. The 27-year-old from the Southern Californian town is known on the LPGA Tour for her consistency, and that has been the key this week as she carded her third consecutive under-par round today on a day when many struggled in the gusty winds.
Chennai, Feb 18 (NPN): The young Shillong Lajong squad will be back in action on February 19 when they take on Chennai City FC in Chennai. Thangboi Singto’s army have enjoyed a good run of matches since 21st January. They first won four back to back matches at home; against Minerva Punjab, Mumbai FC, Chennai City and Churchill Brothers but succumbed to a 1-2 defeat to DSK Shivajians in their fifth home game before they departed for Siliguri to face off East Bengal. Shillong Lajong is on 13 points
now after 9 matches played and are on the fourth position. The Reds whose majority consist of Under 22 Players, have fought very hard to climb up the table and the gaffer, Thangboi Singto, is certain they will put up another commendable display against Chennai on Sunday. Speaking ahead of Sunday’s clash, Singto said, “The weather and the ground is unknown to us and this will be a big test tomorrow.” “Charles and Thank are the two foreigners who can create big problem for us. But we need to win this game
and take home the three points.” On the other side, the I-League debutants, Chennai City FC, are heading into clash after playing a 1-1 draw with Churchill Brothers at home on 14th February. With this draw, the South Indian team have collected 8 points and are on the 7th position in the I-League standings. The last time Shillong Lajong and Chennai City faced off each other was on 31st January this year, where in the former emerged victorious on the occasion in Shillong with the score line of 2-0.
Pliskova, Wozniacki enter Qatar Open final
Karolina Pliskova and (R) Caroline Wozniacki plays shot during their Qatar Open semi final match.
DOHA, Feb 18 (Agencies): Karolina P l i s k ova a n d C a r o l i n e Wozniacki will meet each other in the Qatar Open final after both won two matches on a long, soggy and grueling Friday in Doha. On another day punctuated by heavy showers and thunderstorms, meaning long delays for the players, Czech Pliskova beat Zhang Shuai of China 6-2, 6-0, then Dominika Cibulkova in an exciting semi-final 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Her playing day began at 12:30 local time (0930 GMT) ending just before 11pm. Similarly Dane Wozniacki first beat American qualifier Lauren Davies
7-5 6-1, then Olympic gold medallist Monica Puig 6-1, 6-2, finishing past midnight. Puig was also playing her second match of the day having earlier completed her victory against Daria Kasatkina of Russia, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. “It’s been really tough conditions with all the waiting and everything,” said Wozniacki. P l i s k ova , s p e a k i n g before she knew who her final opponent would be, said “every final is tough”. The pair have met three times before, with Wozniacki winning on every occasion. However they have not met since 2014. Pliskova, 24, is ranked number three in the
world, Wozniacki, who is two years older, is number 18. Incredibly, it also means the rain-ravaged tournament may even finish on time, despite the schedule being battered because of the terrible weather conditions throughout the week. Friday was one of the worst days yet, with delays up to around five because of thunderstorms. It took some 12 hours to complete just five singles matches. If the final does go ahead on Saturday it will come as a great relief to organisers. Indeed, just hours before Pliskova and Wozniacki won through to Saturday’s shootout, organisers were talking about the tournament
finishing without a winner because of the huge number of rain delays during the week as Qatar experiences some of its wettest weather in years. Tariq Darwish Zainal, secretary general of the Qatar Tennis Federation, said play would not continue after Sunday even if the final matches could not be played. Rain has delayed play on every single day, virtually wiping out all matches on two separate days. The forecast for Saturday is indifferent and Wozniacki added that she was “just hoping for good weather” for the final. The Qatar Open is scheduled to finish on Saturday, but has the option of extending to Sunday.
