Criticizing NDPP-BJP alliance, Dr. Shürhozelie pointed out that under the BJP government many Christians had suffered.

CCTVs to be used in all polling stations: CEO DIMAPUR, FEB 17 (NPN): To ensure free and fair elections, the chief electoral officer (CEO) of Nagaland, on Saturday said that CCTV surveillance will be installed in polling stations across the state with either webcasting or offline videography.

Webcasting operators will be under the overall supervision of the presiding officer and the 1st polling official.

On the day of polls, the proceedings in the poll-

ing booth will be monitored by the respective RO/ DEO and the CEO. The CEO stated that webcasting systems will be installed a day prior to the polling day.

ECI on use of EVM and VVPAT: Election Commission of India (ECI) has specified that all the votes for the forthcoming general

elections to the NLA, 2018 will be cast and recorded by means of EVMs and the VVPAT printers in the manner prescribed, under the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961, and the supplementary instructions issued from time to time.

According to the media cell, CEO Nagaland, ECI has expressed satisfaction that a sufficient number of EVM and VVPAT printers were available for the polls in the Assembly Constituencies of Nagaland.

DIMAPUR, FEB 17 (NPN): Taking a dig at the newly floated Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), Nagaland chief minister, T.R. Zeliang said the new party was totally bereft of programmes and policies for the people of Nagaland and that “its one-point manifesto for the forthcoming general elections seems to be T.R. Zeliang.”

Directives/information for general assembly elections DIMAPUR: Deputy Commissioner (DC), Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) and District Election Officer (DEO) across the state have issued directives, information related to the forthcoming elections.

PUGHOBOTO: ADC & DEO, Pughoboto, Avelu Ruho, has directed all government employees drafted for election duty as polling personnel under 13 Pughoboto A/C to attend the election training on February 20, 10 a.m. at Pughoboto town local ground. ADC Pughoboto has warned that failure to attend this crucial training would invite strict disciplinary proceeding as per appropriate sections of the law. All concerned have also been informed to bring two photographs for identity cards.

ADC Pughoboto informs on postal ballot: ADC & DEO Pughoboto Avelu Ruho has informed all government employees, police personnel, drivers and handyman drafted for election duty under 13 Pughoboto A/C, who have applied for postal ballot in Form 12, from and through the DEO Pughoboto, that postal ballots will be issued on February 20-22, 11 a.m. at ADC & DEO’s office.

DIMAPUR: In view of the forthcoming elections, candidates from different political parties have been conducting campaigns throughout the state.

Levi Rengma: Sitting MLA from 12 Tseminyu A/C and National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Er. Levi Rengma vouched for a separate district if voted to power while addressing the gathering at the rally February 15 at Tesophenyu local ground.

DIMAPUR: GPRN/ NSCN-IM has expressed grief over the untimely demise of deputy kilonser Konyak region, Pewang Konyak son of Khowang Konyak of Sheanghah Chingnyu village who passed away on February 16 at Nikos Hospital Dimapur.

In a condolence note, GPRN through it MIP stated that late Pewang Konyak joined national service on February 21 and served the Nation “with utmost sincerity and dedication in vari-

Tripura polls today; BJP the main challenger EC issues show cause to BJP

(PTI) Agartala, Feb 17 (PTI): Tripura would go to polls Sunday with the BJP emerging as the main challenger to the ruling Left Front, which has been in power in the state for the last 25 years.

Polling would be held in 59 of the total 60 seats.

Voting in Charilam Assembly constituency would be held on March 12 due to the death of the CPI(M) candi-

date for the seat, Ramendra Narayan Deb Barma, five days ago.

Twenty seats have been reserved for the scheduled tribes.

The BJP held a highvoltage campaign with Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing as many as four rallies in the state.

Other heavyweight leaders of the saffron party to take part in the cam-

paign were its national president Amit Shah, Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley, Nitin Gadkari and Smriti Irani and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Manik Sarkar, who is running for his fifth term as the chief minister, led the CPI(M)’s campaign addressing around 50 rallies in the state. Other Left leaders like Sitaram Yechury and Brinda

Karat lent support to the party’s campaign.

The Congress’ campaign was somewhat subdued with party president Rahul Gandhi addressing a rally at Kailashahar in Unakoti district, about 180 kms from Agartala, on the last day of campaigning.

Altogether, 307 candidates are in the fray.

The CPI(M) is contesting in 57 seats and while the other Left Front constituents, the RSP, Forward Bloc and CPI, in one seat each.

The BJP, which has forged an alliance with tribal outfit Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) has fielded 51 candidates. IPFT will contest in the remaining nine seats.

The Congress is going it alone in Tripura this time and will contest in 59 seats.

The party has not fielded any candidate for Kakrabon constituency in Gomati district.

There are 25,73,413 e l e c t o r a t e, o f w h o m 13,05,375 are males and 12,68,027 women while the number of third gender voters is 11. There are 47,803 new voters this time.

Voting would be held

between 7 am and 4 pm tomorrow at 3,214 polling stations of which 47 would be managed by women, election office sources said.

Tripura chief electoral officer Sriram Taranikanti said the Election Commission has appointed police observers, general observers and expenditure observers to ensure free and fair polls.

He said, Director General of Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) R K Pachnanda has been appointed as a special observer to coordinate the security forces deployed in the state.

State Director General of Police Akhil Kumar Shukla said tight security measures are in place across Tripura for free and fair elections. Three hundred companies of central armed forces have been deployed across the state along with state armed personnel and the police, he said, adding the BSF is keeping keep close vigil along the 856 km long Indo-Bangladesh border in the state.

Shillong, Feb 17 (PTI): The Election Commission has issued a show cause to the BJP as why the circulation of “chargesheet”, a booklet prepared by them enlisting corruption and sex racket cases against some incumbent Congress ministers, should not be stopped in the poll-bound Meghalaya.

The chargesheet was released by Union Tourism Minister K J Alphons here on February 8.

The booklet is titled ’15 years of loot, 15 years of destruction’.

The Cong ress had lodged a complaint with the Election office against it.

Acting on Congress complaint, the Election Commission issued show cause to the BJP as why the circulation of the chargesheet should not be stopped for allegedly violating the Representation of People’s Act. The saffron party was asked to reply before 5 pm today which they complied.

Government to fully fund central Irani targets Meghalaya 4 ULFA(I) over ground workers arrested projects in NE: Jitendra Singh HM over sexual scandal

Jitendra Singh New Delhi, Feb 17 (PTI): The Narendra Modi government has decided to fully fund various central projects being implemented in the Northeast, instead of the existing practice of sharing 90 per cent of the cost, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said Saturday.

Addressing a press conference here, Singh said ever since the Narendra Modi dispensation assumed office, the Northeastern region has been given the utmost attention.

“A historic decision has been taken. There will be 100 per cent funding by the central government for projects in the region, which were earlier being undertaken on the basis of centre-state sharing in the ratio of 90:10,” he said.

He said the government’s “Act East Policy” has enhanced the importance of the region in engaging with South East

Asian neighbours.

Highlighting the steps taken for the development of the Northeast in the last four years, Singh said the 90-year-old Indian Forest Act of 1927, which was a legacy of the British Raj, was amended through a decision of the Union Cabinet.

“As a result, bamboo, which was defined as a “tree” under the Indian Forest Act of 1927, was changed, thereby doing away with the requirement of obtaining a permit for cutting of bamboo on nonforest land for economic use,” he said.

This, Singh said, is going to be a game-changer for generations to come, by opening new avenues of job generation and entrepreneurship by allowing bamboo cultivation and bamboo use by non-farmers on non-forest land.

Dalu, Feb 17: Information and broadcasting minister, Smriti Zubeen Irani on Saturday hit out at Meghalaya home minister Horju Donkupar Roy Lyngdoh over the sexual assault of a minor girl in his son’s guest house.

Four people had separately raped the 14-year-old girl at the Marvelene’s Inn, the guest house which is run by Lyngdoh’s son Nathaniel Osbert Rymmai.

“The job of a home minister is to protect women and children but in Meghalaya it is a reverse. It is sad and shocking that in Meghalaya where women are held so high, such incident has shamed the state,” she said while addressing an election rally here near the India-Bangladesh border.

Shillong, Feb 17: Former Assam chief minister, Tarun Gogoi Saturday appealed the people of Meghalaya not to fall to the “false promises” of BJP President, Amit Shah, who promised to turn Meghalaya into a model state if his party is voted to power.

“They (BJP) promised everything, they will promise even moon. They have promised to give two lakh jobs. I want to ask them how much central government jobs they have given to Meghalaya,” he told journalists here.

“They talk of Gujarat being a model state, but what have they done to the tribals in Gujarat. They have only exploited the religious sentiments of its people,” Gogoi said.

“In Gujarat, industries in thousands have become sick, jobs have gone down.

He also said that the BJP government in the centre was only good in re-packaging old schemes (started by the UPA). “This government is expert in salesmanship and not statesman ship,” Gogoi added.

Crediting the Christian missionaries for developing Meghalaya, the veteran Assamese Congress leader said, “I can say this without any doubt. Compare the tribals of Meghalaya with those of Gujarat, socially, educationally and economically.”

Pointing out that Meghalaya was a diverse state where different tribes and religious groups co-exist, Gogoi while cautioning people of the state against divisive forces criticised the BJP’s slogan of ‘one culture and one nation’.

Out of this, 3,246-km roads have been marked for development of economic corridor in the Northeast. Also, bidding process for the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway has begun, he said.

Singh said the government has created an exclusive forum at the NITI Aayog for preparing plans for the region, which will be co-chaired by its vicechairman and the DoNER secretary.

The minister said the forum would look into various proposals both at central and state levels and prepare plans for the speedy development of the Northeast.

He said the railways gauge conversion has been completed, thereby all operational medium gauge sections in the Northeast have been converted to broad gauge. A g a r t a la-Akhaura (Bangladesh) rail link supported by the DoNER is at tendering stage, he said.

In civil aviation, Singh said, the construction of an airport at Pakyog (Gangtok, Sikkim) is complete.

Merger with Palaniswami faction was on Modi’s suggestion: OPS

THENI, Feb 17 (AGENCIES): Tamil Nadu deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam, who last year merged his faction with that of chief minister K Palaniswami, has said that he had acted on a suggestion from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking at a party office-bearers meeting at Theni on February 16, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) coordinator said that the issue came up during a courtesy meeting he had with Modi in New Delhi last year.

“He (Modi) said that you (Panneerselvam) could join (merge the faction) to save the party,” the deputy chief minister said, without specifying exactly when the conversation took place.

The merger of the two AIADMK factions took place in August 2017.

Panneerselvam, who had become chief minister of the state following the death of his predecessor J Jayalalithaa in December 2016, said he told the Prime Minister he did not want any Cabinet position and can settle for a party post.

But the Prime Minister wanted him to join the ministry headed by Palaniswami, he said.

O Panneerselvam and Palaniswami merger took place in August 2017. minister said he had conveyed the same to two of his cabinet colleagues from the Palaniswami camp prior to the merger, and that they also insisted he accept a minister’s post.

“That is why I am a minister today. I have no desire to be a minister. Amma (Jayalalithaa) made me MLA four times and chief minister twice.

That honour itself is enough for me,” he told the gathering.

Panneerselvam took over as chief minister twice — in 2001 and later in 2014 — when Jayalalithaa was convicted in two different cases.

In 2014, Jayalalithaa and her confidante Sasikala were convicted in the Rs 66.66 crore disproportionate assets case.

Panneerselvam, who revolted against Sasikala and her family last year after allegedly being forced to make way for her elevation to the chief minister’s post, charged that her family members tried to work for his defeat in the 2016 polls.

Sasikala, however, could not become the chief minister due to her conviction in the graft case.

“If anyone else had faced this amount of crisis and problems, they would

have committed suicide or would have left the party.

(But) I tolerated everything for Amma,” he said.

Meanwhile, senior All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader and fisheries minister D Jayakumar declined to comment on Panneerselvam’s remarks about Modi’s suggestion on merging his faction, saying the remark could have been made during a one-on-one meeting between the two.

He, however, said the party would welcome anyone making suggestions for the AIADMK’s well-being.

“If someone says govern well, take forward Amma’s rule and if that family (of Sasikala) is not required, we will see the postives in it,” Jayakumar told reporters in Chennai today.

Passion of politics

t is easy to be cynical about politicians. George Bernard Shaw said “politics is the last resort for the scoundrel”. If Shaw had been to Nagaland, surely he would more than agree that it is not the last refuge but the first refuge of the lengthening line of scoundrels. It is an irony that the voters in Nagaland are going through the motions of electing those who promise to bring changes by masquerading as people’s representatives. The greatest irony is the assumption that Nagaland will be heaven because of people who think they can elect ‘good leaders’ and the politicians who think that putting old wine in new bottles can together move mountains of change. The so-called self anointed ‘changers’ - the recycled, the neophytes, the crazy and the exhibitionists- all wanting a piece of the action and a huge chunk of the cake, will fill the “highest hallowed portals of the people”, come March 3,2018. Before that, the current electioneering is witnessing disgraced politicians masquerading as saviours, hopes and development gurus touting their manifestos of peace, solution and progress. Judging by the caliber of the contestants, be it politicians who are seeking reelection second or third time or first timers who are seeking a piece of the cake by being touted as ‘fresh faces’ or new faces; the truth is indeed bitter, that people should and cannot expect anything to change. By spending rupees five to ten crores and some even up to rupees twenty to thirty crore, what change will there be except to recoup the money spent for the remaining five year-tenure. Some of those who are seeking reelection for the second or third time haven’t cleared all of their debts. Some change indeed has been coming to Nagaland for decades. The outgoing 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly has seen the worst lows. The legislators have made people shudder with shame and anger at the willful incompetency with which they dealt with various scams. Naga people demand answers from them but again when the time for teaching them a lesson through election, people are gleefully and conveniently feigning amnesia over old wine in new bottles. There is something horribly wrong about the way politics is being played in Nagaland as corruption has become the single biggest denominator. This has corrupted even the best and well meaning of people across society, government and public and therefore when some of them join politics to bring about ‘change’ we can be sure that this oft used cliché isn’t going to take Nagas anywhere near change. For a state that is practically a desert in terms of economic, employment and business avenues but over productive in terms of corruption, lawlessness and anti-socialism; the only way most people see politics is as the only source of greener pasture. Do people want change? Yes they want but they want it easy and not at the cost of having to give up the easy things in life they’re so used to. To add to the misery, the romanticism on Naga nationalism has also suffered grievous injury because it has also meant that ‘false nationalism has become another refuge of the same species’.

Another big letdown is the way religious leaders like the six blind men of Indostan, are trying to treat the manifestations rather than the disease.

After interacting with the students, I could see that confidence is little low amongst students who are going to appear in the board exams.

There might be many reason for the same but it’s time that students must be confident and face the exams so that they could do well in any examination. As many are appearing for board exams, so, some tips might be useful or helpful for them. Here are some quick tips for last planning and preparation before the board exams.

The most important is to have a positive attitude towards exams.

With the Environment Ministry keeping its eyes shut to the crisis, saying the animal was “not yet threatened” or calling it a “state-subject”, poaching and trading of Pangolins has grown into an organised wildlife crime, being carried out by the same syndicates that are involved in tiger poaching, according to experts.

Reports show that at least 6,000 pangolins have been slaughtered in India since 2009 for their expensive scales, which are sold for their so-called aphrodisiac properties, though this aspect is yet unproven, scientifically.

In just over a month, till February 11 this year, at least five individual cases of poaching of the Indian pangolin have come to light, with about 13 kg of scales seized, estimated to be harvested by killing 14 to 26 animals.

The Union Environment Ministry, though, still considers it too early to act.

threatened yet,” Director General of Forests in the Environment Ministry, Siddhant Das, told IANS, adding, “It’s a state subject.” He also said that so far the Centre has no plans for its conservation. However, experts and records disagree. India is home to two of the eight pangolin species found across Asia and Africa -- the Indian pangolin and Chinese pangolin.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Pangolin is enlisted in “red-list”, with the Indian pangolin listed as “endangered” and the Chinese pangolin listed “critically endangered” -- a step behind “extinction”.

Pangolin is a mammal with ants as its primary prey. Its tongue is longer than its body to help it catch as many as 20,000 ants per day. The species is threatened due to its scale, made of keratin -- like human nails.

According to a senior ministry official, demand for pangolin scales are largely in south Asian countries. However, recent investigations have shown that India is emerging as a new market.

Among the parts of the animal which have been seized recently, most has been meat. “Countries which have taken up studies show that their population is dropping, mostly due to poaching,” Badola said.

“There is a huge network working -- maximum seizures were from border area of Manipur and ports of Tamil Nadu,” Badola said.

Realising the threat, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), an international agreement between governments, listed pangolin under Appendix-I in October 2016, barring its trade across the globe. In India too, the species is listed in Schedule-I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972.

In India, it is currently the most poached animal, with central India -- Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra -- emerging as the the most preferred poaching grounds.

According to Wildlife Protection Society of India (WPSI), out of five poaching cases in 2018, two were from Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh, of about 7 kg

of scales. Among these cases was one where local smugglers -- including a government official -- offered to sell 12 kg of scales for Rs 50,000 a kg. Only 5 kg of the scales could be seized by authorities, though.

“Its now an organised wildlife crime and it’s time to get serious,” Tito Joseph from WPSI told IANS. In 2016, there were a total 22 cases of seizures, included the three biggest ones so far -- 123 kg of scales in May, 93 kg in June from Mizoram and 86 kg at New Delhi Railway station, seized by a CBI team. Four people were arrested in Delhi, all of whom are out on bail now.

According to eminent scientist Dr Y.V. Jhala from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), there is “not a single study” on the habitat, behaviour or population estimate of the pangolin.

Officials tracking pangolin poaching say they lack resources to tackle the problem. “We had to refer the recent case (of poaching) to the Special Task Force since we have very limited resources to tackle the syndicate involved locally,” a Madhya Pradesh forest official told IANS on condition of anonymity.

NEW DELHI, Feb 17 (Agencies): After a major crackdown by Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Income Tax (IT) Department, one more law enforcement agency has swung into action in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case. The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) summoned the PNB management and Finance Ministry officials to appear before it.

Top officials of PNB and the Finance Ministry have been asked to appear before the CVC on February 19.

CVC is an apex governmental body to address governmental corruption.

Sources have told ANI that MD and CEO, Punjab National Bank, Sunil Mehta is likely to appear before CVC on Monday at 11 a.m.

by Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) of PNB. On behalf of the Ministry of Finance, additional secretary, department of financial services is likely to be present.

The scam was started in 2011 and was detected in the third week of January this year, after which the PNB officials reported it to the concerned agencies.

Kolkata, Feb 17 (PTI): The Enforcement Directorate Saturday said the solitary Gitanjali Gems store here has started winding up since the Rs 11,400-crore Punjab National Bank scam broke out.

The name of Mehul Choksi, the owner of the store, features in the multicrore rupees fraud.

A senior ED official told PTI that the department’s officials went to the Camac Street store of Gitanjali Gems, but found the shop closed. “It seems that the company was in the process of winding up the store,” the official said.

Another team of ED officials visited a smaller Durgapur store, which is run on franchisee basis.

“It (the Durgapur store) may not be of much help for investigation purposes,” the official said.

PNB has detected the scam in which billionaire diamond merchant Nirav Modi allegedly acquired fraudulent letters of undertaking (LoUs) from a branch in Mumbai to secure overseas credit from other Indian lenders. Choksi is said to be Modi’s uncle. The ED official said there was no Nirav Modi-branded jewellery store in the city.

Didn’t tell bank to honour letters of undertaking: RBI

Mumbai, Feb 17 (Agencies): In a fresh twist to the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud, the RBI has said that it has not issued any directions to the lender to honour its commitments under the letters of undertaking (LoUs) issued to other banks in the Rs 11,300-crore Nirav Modi fraud case.

This statement is likely to trigger uncertainty among other banks that had provided loans on the strength of these LoUs, which are in the nature of bank guarantees. Lenders — including the SBI chairman — had earlier said that they were not at all worried about their loans as their exposure was to PNB. SBI had said that it has a $212-million (nearly Rs 1,400-crore) exposure to loans against LoUs. Allahabad Bank had informed the BSE that it has a $355-million (almost Rs 2,300 crore) exposure. Union Bank has said that the outstanding exposure related to the incident is approximately $300 million (more than Rs 1,900 crore).

Lenders say that if PNB denies liability, there could be cascading legal claims, with banks that had bought the loans in the secondary market suing the ones who sold it to

them. “If the buyer is based in an overseas market, he might choose to pursue the claim locally, leading to the involvement of an overseas regulator,” said a banker.

Meanwhile, the central bank also said that the fraud in PNB is a case of operational risk arising on account of delinquent behaviour by one or more employees of the bank and failure of internal controls.

“RBI has already undertaken a supervisory assessment of control systems in PNB and will take appropriate supervisory action,” RBI said.

Bankers say that the consequential impact in case of PNB denying claims would be extremely difficult to ascertain as there could be banks with silent risk participation. A silent risk participation agreement is a confidential agreement where one party guarantees payment while selling a loan.

PNB on Friday had a conference call with investors, where it is believed to have said that it will pay up.

However, PNB sources said that there is no commitment yet to lenders as the bona fides have to be established first. Also, the bank said that some of the transactions are due in June.

India Post Payments Bank to enable digital payment by April NEW DELHI, Feb 17 (Agencies): With the nationwide rollout of the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) Expansion Prog ramme scheduled to begin in April this year, digital payments in post offices are expected to be enabled around the same time.

The Ministry of Communications, in an official statement claimed that once the proposed expansion is completed, IPPB will be providing the largest financial inclusion network in the country, covering both urban as well as rural hinterland with the ability to provide digital payment services at the doorstep with the help of Postmen and Gramin Dak Sewaks (GDS).

IPPB is also expected to enable more than 17 crore active account-holders of post office savings bank to make interoperable digital payments, including the benefit of NEFT, RTGS, UPI and bill payment services.

New Delhi, Feb 17 (Agencies): The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said a “financial disincentive” of up to ₹50 lakh for each service area can be imposed on a telco in case a tariff offered by the operator is found to be predatory.

In its new tariff order, aimed at ensuring transparency, non-discrimination and non-predation, TRAI said in the case of noncompliance with norms to report any new tariff to the regulator, the telco may be “liable to pay five thousand rupees, by way of financial disincentive for every day of delay subject to a maximum of ₹2 lakh as the Authority may by order direct.”

TRAI added there was no need to impose restrictions on the number of promotional offers that an operator can provide to its subscribers. “Restrictions may not be in the interest of consumers, apart from possibly hindering competition. Promotional offers are reflection of maturity of competition at most of times and restricting them would amount to interference with market forces,” it said.

Mueller indicted 13 Russian nationals and three entities

Robert Mueller WASHINGTON, FEB 17 (IANS): US Special counsel Robert Mueller has indicted 13 Russian nationals and three Russian entities for allegedly meddling in the 2016 presidential election, charging them with conspiracy to defraud Washington, according to the Department of Justice.

In addition, three defendants were charged on Friday with conspiracy to commit wire and bank fraud, and five defendants with aggravated identity theft, reports CNN. “The defendants allegedly conducted what they called information warfare against the US, with the stated goal of spreading distrust towards the candidates and the political system in general,” Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said.

Mueller had convened a grand jury as part of his ongoing investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election as well as any possible connections between Moscow and President Donald Trump’s campaign associates.

According to the indictment, beginning as early as 2014, the Russian organisation Internet Research Agency began operations to interfere with the US political system, including the 2016 election.

The defendants allegedly posed as American nationals, created false US personas and operated social media pages and groups designed to attract US audiences, CNN quoted the indictment as saying.

Two of the Russians also allegedly travelled to the US in 2014 to gather

intelligence for their operations. The Internet Research Agency had a “strategic goal to sow discord in the US political system”, it added.

Twelve of the 13 defendants charged worked for the Internet Research Agency. In response, the White House on Friday night said Trump was fully briefed on the indictment and “is glad to see the Special Counsel’s investigation further indicates that there was no collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia and that the outcome of the election was not changed or affected”.

“It is more important than ever before to come together as Americans,” Trump said in the statement.

“We cannot allow those seeking to sow confusion, discord, and rancor to be successful. It’s time we stop the outlandish partisan attacks, wild and false allegations and far-fetched theories... We must unite as Americans to protect the integrity of our democracy and our elections.”

A White House official told CNN that Rosenstein and FBI Director Christopher Wray briefed the President on the indictment at the White House on Friday morning.

Pakistan minor’s killer gets four death sentences

LAHORE, FEB 17 (IANS): A Pakistan court on Saturday gave a 24-year-old man four death sentences for raping and murdering six-year-old Zainab Amin last month.

The verdict was announced at Lahore’s Central Jail, reports Dawn news.

The court handed Imran Ali the four death penalties for kidnapping, raping and murdering Zainab, and for committing an act of terrorism.

A separate life sentence, along with 2 million Pakistani rupees ($29,000) fine, was also handed to Ali for sodomy along with a seven-year jail sentence

for concealing the body in a garbage heap.

Prosecutor General Ehtesham Qadir said the accused had been given ample chance to defend himself, but he chose to confess his crimes despite being told clearly that any information he divulged would be used against him, Dawn news reported.

Zainab’s case had sparked outrage and protests across the country after the minor, who went missing on January 4, was found dead in Kasur city on January 9.

Her case was the 12th such incident to occur within a 10 km radius in the city over a 12-month period.

Turkey claims control inside Syria’s Afrin

ISTANBUL, FEB 17 (IANS): Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday announced that his country’s armed forces had taken control of more than 300 sq.km of Syrian territory inside the Kurdish-controlled enclave of Afrin, located in northwestern Syria.

Speaking at a public rally, Erdogan touted the progress being made in Turkey’s military incursion into Afrin, dubbed ‘Operation Olive Branch’, the stated aim of which was to create a 30-km-deep (19-mile) buffer zone inside Syria and expel the United States-supported Kurdish YPG militias that hold the enclave, EFE news agency reported. “The Turkish Army has advanced 300 sq km during ‘Operation Olive Branch’,” Erdogan said during a televised speech from Afyonkarahisar. Although the Kurdish YPG played a pivotal role in the campaign against the Islamic State terror organisation in Syria, the group is viewed by Ankara as indistinguishable from the PKK Kurdish separatists who have fought a low-scale guerrilla war in eastern-Turkey for decades.

Attacks out of proportion: Oxfam chief LONDON, FEB 17 (IANS): Oxfam’s Chief Executive, Mark Goldring, has said the scale and intensity of the criticism against the British charity in the wake of claims that its workers used prostitutes in Haiti, were out of proportion to its level of culpability.

In an interview with the Guardian, Goldring on Friday repeated his apology for Oxfam’s failings and acknowledged that major reforms were needed.

But warning that the controversy has already affected vital donations, he accused critics of “gunning” for the charity and said some were motivated in part by an anti-aid agenda.

“The intensity and the ferocity of the attack makes you wonder, what did we do?” he said.

“We murdered babies in their cots? Certainly, the scale and the intensity of the attacks feels out of proportion to the level of culpability. I struggle to understand it. You think, ‘My God, there’s something going on there.’”

Goldring acknowledged that his comments could be used to inflict more damage on the embattled charity, saying: “Anything we say is being manipulated... even apologies only make matters worse.”

The lid weighs over 350 kg, reports Xinhua news agency. The pot can hold one tonne of food and serve 800 people at the same time, said Li Anmin, a craftsman who specializes in making Datong bronze ware. “Datong bronze hot pot was called ‘elevated pot’ during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It took dozens of workers two months to make it. We needed 250 kgs of charcoal to heat up the pot,” he said.

MEXICO CITY, FEB 17 (IANS): An earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale struck southeastern Mexico, with the epicentre recorded in the state of Oaxaca, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

Emergency authorities in the Oaxaca reported “only material damage and no loss of human life” during the earthquake on Friday night, reports CNN. The USGS initially reported a magnitude of 7.5 but revised it downward.

ilmmaker Ram Gopal Varma on Saturday appeared before Hyderabad police in connection with a case of obscenity booked against him for his movie “God, Sex and Truth”, and also for allegedly insulting the modesty of a woman. The filmmaker, whose controversial movie with American porn star Mia Malkova was released on internet last month, appeared before the officials of Central Crime Station (CCS) in response to the notice served on him.

The police officials questioned him about the allegations made against him by women activists.

On January 25, a day before the release of the movie, Varma was booked by the CCS. A case under section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000 was booked against him for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form.

L o n d o n, F e b 1 7 (Agencies): Willian scored twice as a firsthalf blitz from Chelsea secured an emphatic 4-0 win over Hull City at Stamford Bridge to book their place in the FA Cup quarterfinals.

The Brazilian opened the scoring after just 106 seconds with a composed finish, before Pedro doubled the home side’s advantage after being put through by Cesc Fabregas (27).

India to send 225 athletes for Kohli ton powers India to 5-1 win over South Africa Commonwealth Games 2018 NEW DELHI, Feb 17 (Agencies): The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has increased the number of quota places for Indian sportspersons in two disciplines – boxing and athletics – for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games (CWG) to be held from April 4 to 15 in Australia.

This will come as a boost for boxers and athletes but it has come at the expense of CGF reducing the number of quota places for the country’s sportspersons in other disciplines, most notably gymnastics, shooting and cycling.

TOI has obtained the list of India’s official contingent size in 15 disciplines, in which athletes will participate at the CWG. An increased number of 225 athletes will travel to the Gold Coast, as compared to the total number of 215 participants at the Glasgow CWG in 2014. In boxing, the CGF has accepted the request of

the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) to increase the number of quota places for the Indian pugilists. The CGF had reduced the entries to 10 from the originally allocated 13, leading to despair among Indian sports administrators, as boxing has fetched India impressive number of medals in the past.

After considering the request, the CGF has decided to increase the quota number to 12 (increase of one quota place in women’s category), which means the

BFI could send one extra woman boxer (India had sent three women boxers to Glasgow in 2014). While this is still a quota short of what India had been demanding, it’s an increase from the Glasgow’s boxing contingent size of 11.

Similarly, in athletics, the CGF has offered seven more quota places to take the sport’s contingent size to 37, as compared to Glasgow’s 32. The CGF had originally allocated 30 quota places to India in the athletics for the Gold Coast Games.

In basketball, Indian men’s and women’s team participation has straightaway added 24 quota places (12 men and 12 women) to the country’s overall contingent size. The CGF has extended ‘invitation’ to India for the Games. It’s after a gap of eight years that the basketball teams will play at the CWG. Basketball last featured as a discipline in CWG in 2010 Delhi Games.

CENTURION, FEB 17 (Agencies): India’s Virat Kohli set a new batting record as he put on another masterclass with an unbeaten century against hosts South Africa on Friday to secure an easy eightwicket victory and win the one-day international series 5-1.

India strode to a comfortable win at Centurion as they reached their victory target with 107 balls to spare after putting South Africa into bat and bowling them out for 204.

India, who have taken over from South Africa as the world’s top-ranked ODI team, were 206-2 in reply in another dominant performance, with captain Kohli again leading from the front.
