Pending salary: DDANMA goes on mass casual leave

DIMAPUR, FEB 8 (NPN): Dimapur District ANM Association (DDANMA) Tuesday announced its decision to go on a mass casual leave with effect from February 7, 2022 till pending salaries were released. In a letter to chief medical officer (CMO) Dimapur, DDANMA president Naomi Loth and secretary Temsujungla stated that it was demoralizing to work without payment of salary for months together despite sincerely carrying out assigned duties. The association has cautioned that the department would be held responsible in the event any unwanted situation arose. Despite submitting a representation demanding release of pending salary since November 2021, they said there was no positive response from the department even after the expiry of deadline.

The decision followed a joint parliamentary meeting of UDA constituents held at CM’s residential complex in Kohima on Tuesday. NPF sources also informed that YM Yollow Konyak will be inducted as a cabinet minister. When contacted, Yollow confirmed about the development and said that he had received the ap-

pointment order from Raj Bhavan. The swearing-in ceremony would be held at Dr. Imkongliba Hall, Raj Bhavan on Wednesday where governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi would administer the oath. Speaking to media persons after the joint UDA consultative meeting held at State Banquet Hall here on Tuesday, parliamentary affairs minister Neiba Kronu said one cabinet berth would be given to NPF. He declined to respond when asked who would be inducted and re-

marked that it was the prerogative of the chief minister, adding that the cabinet post that was laying vacant would thus be filled up. Further, as already reported by Nagaland Post, Kronu informed the media that the chief minister would campaign in Manipur for NPF candidates in mid-February. Manipur is scheduled to go for Assembly polls from February 27-March 5. NPF has fielded 10 candidates in the election. Meanwhile, responding to a media query, BJP legislator and adviser Mmhonlumo Kikon said that UDA was not a newlyformed government and that the decision to elect Zeliang as chairman was joint a decision where BJP legislators were also present. Therefore, he clarified the question “whether BJP was comfortable with the decision” did not arise.

NDPP, NPF ‘B team’ of BJP: NPCC DIMAPUR, FEB 8 (NPN): Accusing the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and Naga People's Front (NPF) of doing everything for RSSBJP in disguise of regional political party for the past 19 years, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) Tuesday claimed that they (NDPP and NPF) were the “B team” of BJP, saying “they have accepted the idea of Hindutva Nationalism.” In a press release, NPCC president K Therie said that with the tenure of MP (Rajya Sabha) KG Kenye coming to an end on April 2, 2022 and schedule

of election for RS MP to be notified soon, “BJP appears to be persuading for the seat.” Therie said it was “sad to imagine a saffron MP from Nagaland standing before Parliament, exhibiting representation of a 98% Christian population.” Fur ther, attacking NDPP and NPF, state Congress chief said they were more than a saffron brigade. “They fall in the class of political traitors. They fear BJP will use NIA and CBI against them for their own crimes,” Therie said. Asserting that both the MPs of NPF and NDPP voted for Citizenship (Amend-

According to a DIPR report, NSDMA informed that the declaration of drought, based on the scanty deficit and less than normal rainfall that has been observed from March-November 2021, came into effect from September 15, 2021, and would continue to be in effect for six months, till further order. The declaration was

made after taking into account the conditions as arising from rainfall deficiency and poor crop conditions and the distress situation that had developed in almost the entire farming area affected by these conditions through field verification and poor harvest during 2021; and on the basis of reports available from the deputy commissioners and chairmen of the concerned DDMAs. Agriculture minister, G Kaito Aye, in June 16 last year, had also stated that Nagaland was facing a drought-like situation owning to the deficient and erratic rainfall.

He said NPF suspended KG Kenye MP for voting for CAA, but later NPF decided to join BJP whose government brought CAA Bill. Cong, BJP to share power in Meghalaya Correspondent

S H I L L O N G, F E B 8 : Known for the origin of coalition politics in the country, Meghalaya has now thrown up yet another power-sharing equation, in which sworn rivals Congress and BJP will likely be the part of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, which, led by the National People’s Party (NPP) is a part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The Congress Legislature Party (CLP), which constituted of five elected assembly members, met chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday and offered to join the government, which was promptly accepted by Sangma, who maintained that there were no permanent friends or enemies in politics. “We the undersigned MLAs of the Indian National Congress have decided to join the MDA government today the 8th February, 2022. Mawrie said the decision of Congress joining the government was taken by chief minister, who is also the president of the National People’s Party. “We will hold discussions on it and also apprise our central leadership and then we would take a decision,” he said. Reacting to development, TMC tweeted, “The unscrupulous & power hungry people have officially joined hands. This alliance between Congress & NPP led MDA has once again clearly MARKED @AITC official as the only credible alternative in Meghalaya!..”

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2022

APC Y. Kikheto Sema along with members of ECS and others at the inaugural programme of the ZES.

DIMAPUR: An inaugural programme of zero energy cold storage with 30 tons storage capacity was held in Tuensang on Tuesday. A press release from the department of soil and water conservation informed that the Zero Energy Storage (ZES) was initiated by Eleutheros Christian Society (ECS) under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Chingmak Kejong

and funded by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and Tata Trust. Inaugurating the zeroenergy storage, agriculture production commissioner (APC), Y. Kikheto Sema acknowledged ECS for working towards the socioeconomic upliftment of the people of Nagaland, particularly the people of Tuensang.

He observed that the zero-energy storage unit would be a useful facility for the farming community in the state as the power supply of the state was not going to meet the demand in many years to come. He assured that the department would recommend the technology and see to it that the central government recognised the initiatives of ZES within

the funding design and collaborate in the future. APC stated that the state gover nment was working towards “holistic development in the field of agriculture” and facilities such as soil testing laboratories in all districts, block level soil testing laboratories, bio fertilizer production units and meteorological observatories had been installed.

IMPHAL, FEB 8: National People’s Party (NPP) on Tuesday made a strong allegation of its candidates and workers being threatened and attacked by cadres of armed outfits on the behest of BJP and NPF in Manipur. The party also lodged complaints to the state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) and Election Commission of India (ECI), NPP informed in a statement. The statement of the media and communication cell of the NPP accused cadres of armed outfits - KNFMC, KNF-Z, UKLF, KNA and HPC (D) of threatening their candidates in different constituencies. They have openly come out to support opponent candidates from BJP and NPF, it alleged. In Tipaimukh AC of Pherzawl district, it alleged, the cadres of HPC (D) moved around with arms intimidating the voters and village chiefs to vote for BJP candidates. The underground group like KNA and UKLF under Suspension of Operation (SOO) with the government also threatened party workers and village chief to support

BJP candidate Letpao Haokip from Tengnoupal AC. The statement by NPF further stated at Tamenglong constituency, outfits under SoO were campaigning strongly for NPF and BJP candidates. The outfit has warned NPP party workers with dire consequences. NPP alleged that on February 6, KNF-MC and KNF-Z leaders Paokholen Haokip, Jangkhonlum Haokip and Lunmang Haokip threatened workers of NPP and village chief to vote for BJP candidate Letzamang Haokip from Henglep AC. The outfit members halted six women NPP workers and two drivers at Lamden Kuki village and threatened to shoot them if they campaign for NPP candidate, the NPP added. “We have complained about the incidents of attacks and threats issued to our candidates to Chief Electoral Officer, Manipur State and to Election Commission of India,” the statement informed. The statement further urged the authorities to put all underground groups under SoO in their respective camps and recover arms from their possession. “We would also like to urge that all constituencies, which has presences of UGs be declared ‘most sensitive’ and additional security provided in the constituencies for conduct of fair election process. It alleged that the security cover for sitting MLA Y Erabot Singh who is contesting on NPP ticket from Wangkhei AC has also been reduced and demanded adequate security cover for the candidate in the fray. Assam submits affidavit on police encounters before HC

GUWAHATI, FEB 8 (PTI): The Assam government has filed a detailed affidavit on the police encounters before the Gauhati High Court as sought by it last month. The high cour t on Tuesday deferred the hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) related to the incidents till February 10. Hearing the PIL, a division bench comprising Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Soumitra Saikia had on January 11 asked the state government to file the affidavit on the police encounters that have been taking place since the BJP returned to power in May last year. “The Assam government filed the affidavit yesterday as sought by the high court. The court has now decided to hear the case on Thursday,” state Advocate General Devajit Lon Saikia told PTI. The Assam government had on January 25 failed to submit the affidavit and the court, giving it more time, deferred hearing of the case till Tuesday. Besides the Assam government, state police DGP, law and justice department, National Human Rights Commission and Assam Human Rights Commis-

sion have been named as respondents in the PIL filed by advocate Arif Md Yeasin Jwadder. The petitioner sought an enquiry into the encounters by an independent agency such as CBI, SIT or any police team from other states under the supervision of the court. He has also sought a judicial enquiry by a sitting Judge of the Gauhati High Court in the incidents and monetary compensation to the victims’ families after due verification. Jwadder claimed in the PIL that more than 80 fake encounters between Assam Police and alleged accused have taken place since May last year, when Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took charge, resulting in 28 deaths and more than 48 injuries. The people killed or injured were not dreaded criminals and the modus operandi of the police had been the same in all the encounters, the PIL claimed. The petitioner doubted the police statement published in newspapers which said that the force had to retaliate in self-defence as the accused had tried to snatch service revolvers of the personnel.

NEW DELHI, FEB 8 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that the Congress Party had “throttled” democracy in 1975 and is now teaching the lesson of democracy to the BJP. Replying to the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address in the Rajya Sabha, PM Modi said contrary to Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge’s claim that the Congress laid the foundation of the country and the BJP only hoisted its flag on it, the grand old party had in reality “throttled” democracy in 1975. Continuing to attack the Congress Party, Modi said the problem with the Congress is that they do not think beyond the dynasty. “The biggest threat to India is from dynastic political parties and when a family is supreme in a party, the first casualty is talent. For years,

Narendra Modi

the country has suffered owing to it. I expect all political parties to follow democracy in their working also and the Congress should take a lead on this.” Holding the Congress’ mindset that ‘India is Indira and Indira is India’ responsible for these debacles, he said: “What would have happened if Congress was not there? This was Mahatma Gandhi’s wish too.” Taking a jibe at the party , he said, “Had Congress ceased to be as per Mahatma Gandhi’s wish, democracy would have

been free from dynastic influence, there would not have been any foreign influence, emergency, no caste and regional divide. Had Congress not been there, then Sikh’s massacre would not have happened and Punjab would not have burnt in flames of terrorism for years, there would not have been exodus of Kashmiri Pandits and the daughters would not have been burnt in the tandoor.” His remarks evoked a sharp response from the Congress with the LoP objecting to it strongly stating that Modi should have spoken only on the President’s speech. At this, Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu intervened and said: “Kharge ji, you all had also spoken like this.” The Congress members rushed to the well of the House and kept on protesting. After a while, they staged a walk-out.

Cong MPs walk out from RS, says Modi ‘only targeting party’ NEW DELHI, FEB 8 (PTI): Congress MPs on Monday staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reply to the motion of thanks on President’s address, alleging he was only speaking against the Congress party and not on the address. Modi on Tuesday continued his no-holdsbarred attack on the Congress declaring that even Mahatma Gandhi wanted the party dismantled and claiming there would have been no Emergency, no massacre of Sikhs, no caste politics and no exodus of Pandits from Kashmir had the Congress not been there. Replying to the debate on the motion of thanks to the president’s address in the Rajya Sabha, Modi, who also highlighted his gover nment’s achievements, launched a blistering attack against the Congress and alleged that “urban Naxals” had con-

trol over the party. Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge later told reporters that the prime minister was only making accusations against the Congress and was not speaking on President Ram Nath Kovind’s address in Parliament. “He was only targeting the Congress party. Instead of speaking on schemes and concerns of members enumerated in the House during the debate, the prime minister was only speaking about the Congress… Those who worship Mahatma Gandhi Ji’s assassin are now telling us that the Congress should be dissolved,” he said. Responding to Modi’s attack on the Congress, party general secretary and chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said it is because of the Congress there is space for opposition and dissent and that a party of two MPs is today ruling the country.

Battle for UP: BJP manifesto has sops for all year.

HM Amit Shah with Anurag Thakur, UP CM Yogi Adityanath, Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya and state BJP chief Swatantra Dev Singh releases manifesto of BJP.

L U C K N O W, F E B 8 (IANS): The BJP manifesto for the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections promises free electricity to farmers for irrigation and will launch a Mukhya Mantri Krishi Sichai Yojana at a cost of Rs 5,000 crore. The manifesto, re-

leased by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, promises subsidy for small farmers for borewells, tubewells, ponds and tanks. It has promised a Rs 5,000 crore renewal plan for sugar mills in the state. Also, it promises that wheat and paddy will be available at

MSP in five years. For those accused in love-jihad cases, the manifesto proposes a minimum sentence of ten years and a fine of Rs one lakh so that it works as a deterrent. The state government passed an ‘anti-love jihad’ ordinance in November last

Other promises made by the ruling party -- which is widely seen as facing a stern challenge from Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party to retain control of UP -- include a commitment to double the state’s per capita income and attract up to Rs 10 lakh crore in investment. The BJP will set up a Lata Mangeshkar Academy of Performing Arts in the state in memory of the late singer. The BJP has also promised a ‘Paryatan Kaushal Kosh’ worth Rs 2000 crore that will generate employment for 10 lakh youth. The manifesto also promises a scooty to meritorious college girls, free bus travel for women above 60 years and two free gas cylinders in a year. Two crore tablets and smartphones will also be distributed.

A pension of Rs 1,500 per month will be given to widows. A Ma Annapurna canteen will be set for free food to the poor. The BJP will start a scheme in the name of former chief minister Kalyan Singh. Called the Babuji Kalyan Singh Gram Unnat Yojana, the scheme will ensure all round development of villages. Self help groups will be set up at a cost of Rs 5,000 crore for five lakh women. A Garib Kalyan Mela will be organised in every gram panchayat. A Ramayana University will be set up in Ayodhya for research into various books and scriptures related to the subject. To improve the medical infrastructure, the BJP has promised to recruit 6,000 doctors and 10, 000 paramedics.

Goa polls: BJP promises Court seeks police action report restoration of mining against TV journo for hate speech

PANAJI, FEB 8 (PTI): The BJP on Tuesday promised to make Goa a USD 50 billion economy in the next 10 years and assured housing for all, restoration of mining activities besides ceiling on taxes on petrol and diesel to control their prices as it unveiled its manifesto for the February 14 polls in the coastal state. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, in presence of chief minister Pramod Sawant and Goa BJP president Sadanand Shet Tanavade, unveiled the manifesto that speaks about “empowering the future of Goa, increasing tourism activities, restoring legal mining and eliminating multidimensional poverty”

in the state. The ruling party said, “We will through constant efforts propel Goa to a growth trajectory that will enable the state to become a USD 50 billion economy in the next ten years.” The BJP, which has fielded candidates in all the 40 assembly constituencies, promised to completely eliminate “multidimensional poverty” in the coastal state in the next five years. “We will deliver social welfare benefits to the poor in a timely manner and through direct benefit transfers. We will increase the old age pension under DDSSY (Deen Dayal Swasthya Seva Yojana) to Rs 3,000 per month,” the manifesto said.

NEW DELHI, FEB 8 (PTI): A court here has directed Delhi Police to file an action taken report (ATR) within a month in a complaint seeking registration of an FIR against Sudarshan TV editor-in-chief Suresh Chavhanke for allegedly making hate speeches at an event here. Additional Sessions Judge Dharmender Rana directed the police to file the ATR in a proceeding held through video conferencing on February 7. The plea, filed by Vikas Kangra, alleged that Chavhanke made a “derogatory hate speech with a criminal motive of not (just)

striking feelings of hatred, ill-will, and enmity against all communities of India, other than the upper caste Hindu community, but also with an intent to strike terror in their minds”. “Let ATR be called from concerned SHO for March 5,” the court said. The applicant claimed

Hyundai issue: India tells S Korea that no compromise on territorial integrity

NEW DELHI, FEB 8 (PTI): India has summoned the South Korean ambassador over the “unacceptable” social media post by Hyundai Pakistan on the so-called Kashmir solidarity day and bluntly conveyed to him that there could be no compromise on the matter as it concerned the country’s territorial integrity. South Korean Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong spoke to his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar this morning and the Korean side regretted the offence caused to the people and government of India by the social media post. Sending a tough message, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said the South Korean envoy was summoned on Monday and a “strong

displeasure” of the government on the social media post was conveyed. India expected the company to take “appropriate action” to properly address the issue, he stressed. Bagchi said the Indian ambassador in Seoul contacted the Hyundai headquarters and sought an explanation. The MEA spokesperson said India welcomes investments by foreign companies in various sectors, but, it is also expected that such companies or their affiliates will refrain from “false and misleading” comments on matters of sovereignty and territorial integrity. Tweets from accounts linked to Hyundai and its affiliate Kia Corp expressing solidarity with Kashmir separatists triggered outrage

in India following which the South Korean firm said it has a “zero-tolerance” policy towards insensitive communication. “We had seen a social media post on the so-called Kashmir Solidarity Day was made by Hyundai Pakistan. Immediately after this social media post on Sunday, our Ambassador in Seoul contacted the Hyundai Headquarters and sought an explanation,” Bagchi said. “The offending post had been removed subsequently. The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea was summoned by the Ministry of External Affairs yesterday. The strong displeasure of the Government on the unacceptable social media post by Hyundai Pakistan was conveyed to him,” he said.

that Chavhanke administered an “aggressive, hostile, and terrorising oath” to the crowd gathered at the place of incident at an event organised by the Hindu Yuva Vahini. The plea further claimed that Chavhanke was exhorting for a “Hindu Rashtra” by administering oaths to their members to go to any extent including killing people. It claimed that the accused was promoting “hatred, animosity, and hostility against all communities of India, including religious minorities and members of Scheduled Caste communities.

PC calls NDA govt ‘no data available govt’ NEW DELHI, FEB 8 (PTI): ‘This is a no data available government’ said former finance minister P Chidambaram in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday over the ruling dispensation’s “failure” to have the record on oxygen shortage deaths, corpses floating in rivers and migrants walking back home during the coronavirus-induced lockdown. Initiating a discussion on the Union budget 2022-23, Chidambaram said unemployment is on the rise in the country and questioned the Centre over the steps taken for the welfare of the common people following reduced subsidies for petroleum, fertiliser, food, among others. “Welfare has been thrown to the wind for 142 billionaires of this country,” he said. Chidambaram spoke immediately after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reply to the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address. He said he was speak-

NOIDA, FEB 8 (PTI): Ahead of the state assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday hit out at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath alleging mismanagement by him during the COVID-19 pandemic. AAP’s Rajya Sabha m e m b e r S a n j ay S i n g h slammed Adityanath for his “indecent” remarks against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, equating his expressions with those of a “chauraha chhap neta”. While dubbing Adityanath’s remarks as those of a “chauraha chhap neta”, Singh, also the in-charge of his party’s affairs in UP, asserted that his own remarks were “befitting” a chief minister who utters words like “garmi nikaal denge” and

Sanjay Singh addressing the press.

“thok denge”. The attack came a day after Adityanath and Kejriwal got engaged in an online fight trading barbs over the “mismanagement” by their governments during the pandemic. “His (Adityanath’s) language against a popular and elected Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal -- he said ‘Suno Kejriwal’ -- this kind

of indecent language for an elected chief minister reflects that Adityanath ji might have unfortunately become the CM of UP but he speaks like a ‘chauraha chhap neta’,” Singh said. “He is talking about COVID-19 mismanagement but I am saying if there is any live example of the mismanagement, it is Adityanath.

War against drugs

R

ecent drug seizures by police at Dimapur and mostly at nearby Karbi Anglong indicate that trafficking is going on in a huge scale that was unimaginable till a few years back. The magnitude of the quantity of drugs especially heroin, prove that the north east region is a major transit zone of trafficking of various illicit drugs and heroin. The smuggling route is anywhere from the porous border between Myanmar and Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram etc. Drugs including opium, heroin, methamphetamine and many more are smuggled from Myanmar into the northeast. Moreh (Manipur), Champai (Mizoram), Dimapur (Nagaland), and Guwahati (Assam) have become the nucleus of drug trafficking industry in India’s northeast. Drugs produced in the notorious ‘Golden Triangle’ enter India through Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland from Bhamo, Lashio, and Mandalay in Myanmar . Also, drugs illicitly manufactured in India and used for refining heroin travel through the same route for trade. The route bifurcates and one channel moves northwards through Moreh in Manipur while other moves southwards to enter Champai in Mizoram. Recent seizures of various drugs and at Dimapur, Khatkhati, Bokajan and Nagaon etc indicate that the quantity being smuggled has multiplied many times. For instance, according to Narcotics Control Bureau(NCB) during January 2019 the total quantity of heroin seized along the Moreh, Dimapur and Khatkhati route was around 700 grams or worth around Rs.3.5 crore. On the other hand, during January 2022 the total quantity of heroin seized on the same route was nearly 3 kgs and worth around Rs.15 crore. The seizures in 2021 were notable as quantities were huge. From July to October 2021, a total of approximately 20 kgs of heroin was seized by police mostly in Karbi Anglong and a few from Dimapur. A high profile case was the arrest of a female drug smuggler known as ‘Didi’ and hailing from Manipur during June 2021. Assam Police who were tracking the main supply source, found that Th. Paone alias Didi stores huge quantity of heroin in Dimapur and then send them repacked in small packets to other destination across Assam and other states. She was nabbed in Karbi Anglong by police in a well laid trap with heroin worth over Rs.7 crore. The biggest seizure in 2021 was in December when Assam Rifles and Manipur Police seized over 54 kgs of heroin valued at Rs.508 crore in the market. According to official sources, the value of drugs etc smuggled from Myanmar to Manipur, Nagaland and Assam is huge. Indo-Myanmar border is guarded by the Assam Rifles (AR), a paramilitary force, under the operational control of Indian Army’s Eastern Command. The border encounters non-conventional security challenges as it provides a secure channel for the movement of north east insurgents, narcotics trafficking, gunrunning, smuggling of wildlife etc. Now the government has extended to the Assam Rifles two provisions of the country’s Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. Section 42 of the NDPS Act authorizes the empowered officers of this force now to “search the premises, seizure of the drugs, detain any person or arrest the person who has committed the offence without a warrant.” Hopefully, this will make a huge impact in preventing drugs and illicit substances from pouring in for the safety and future of the people.

DailyDevotion The Cost of Sanctification

May the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely… —1 Thessalonians 5:23

When we pray, asking God to sanctify us, are we prepared to measure up to what that really means? We take the word sanctification much too lightly. Are we prepared to pay the cost of sanctification? The cost will be a deep restriction of all our earthly concerns, and an extensive cultivation of all our godly concerns. Sanctification means to be intensely focused on God’s point of view. It means to secure and to keep all the strength of our body, soul, and spirit for God’s purpose alone. Are we really prepared for God to perform in us everything for which He separated us? And after He has done His work, are we then prepared to separate ourselves to God just as Jesus did? “For their sakes I sanctify Myself…” (John 17:19). The reason some of us have not entered into the experience of sanctification is that we have not realized the meaning of sanctification from God’s perspective. Sanctification means being made one with Jesus so that the nature that controlled Him will control us. Are we really prepared for what that will cost? It will cost absolutely everything in us which is not of God. Are we prepared to be caught up into the full meaning of Paul’s prayer in this verse? Are we prepared to say, “Lord, make me, a sinner saved by grace, as holy as You can”? Jesus prayed that we might be one with Him, just as He is one with the Father (see John 17:21-23). The resounding evidence of the Holy Spirit in a person’s life is the unmistakable family likeness to Jesus Christ, and the freedom from everything which is not like Him. Are we prepared to set ourselves apart for the Holy Spirit’s work in us?

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2022

M

Appeal to doctors in Nagaland

y attention was drawn to the news items that appeared in Local dailies that appeared on February 6,2022 under the headline NIDA warns of mass resignation. This is a very striking warning to the Nagaland State Government. In Nagaland, it is estimated that 98% are so-called Christians. So, one of the tenets of Christianity is obedience to the law and the rulers. If the rulers do not do justice and show favoritism, misuse public funds and amass perishable wealth, then they are accountable to God. Nevertheless, as long as they remain in the authority all the employees has to respect and abide by their decision. That is why those who are employed in the Government service are called Government servants.

I

am not an economist. I am puzzled by certain issues with economic implications vexing for the layman. I would like to be reassured. I do not propose to answer questions but to ask them. Late in 2019, corporate profits declined, largely owing to a fall in demand: consumers lacked the money to buy. With singularly little fuss, the Government of India granted corporates tax relief of Rs 1.45 lakh crore, purportedly so that they could expand production capacity, thereby employment, thereby people’s purchasing power. It was widely observed that no firm would scale up capacity if demand was low. Nor did it happen. And the pandemic happened soon after. Of course it was unforeseen. But this time, when asked about cash doles for the people it had pauperized, the government declared that it did not believe in handouts. Street vendors and small traders were offered loans. How many small players would risk one at this time, even if they knew of the scheme and could jump through the official hoops? There were indeed cash ‘handouts’ under the Prad-

P

erhaps the most crucial decision of the then national leadership of free India about the strategy of management of the new democratic Republic was to retain the ‘steel frame’ left behind by the British in the form of ICS and IP and establish IAS and IPS as the All India Civil Services to succeed them. These were envisioned as the specially empowered national instruments to broadly handle development administration and the law & order apolitically - across the national grid - taking into account the federal scheme of things in the Republic. In no other major country in the world does an equivalent of IAS and IPS exists in the sense that on a merit-based selection at the national level, the entrant is installed in the decisionmaking ‘leadership’ position of an Under Secretary of Government of India just within three years after the training - Collector and SP in the states represent that status granted at the start of the service career itself. That there was no conflict between the Centre and the states about these prime services was implied in the practice of the Centre handling the recruitment and training of IAS and IPS officials and then placing them in the hands of the states according to an assessed ‘cadre strength’ with the minimal subsequent role of broadly keeping track of their performance and giving them a sense of central protection against any unfair

Perhaps, this may be one of the reasons why children of rich people don’t seek government job. They don’t want to be called SERVANT because they are the master of many servants. They establish their own business and earn more than what the honest government servants earn during their entire series in the State Government. Even in our State, many rich people establish their own hospitals and employ doctors and help the sick. That is a noble service. Till today, in Nagaland State Government is the largest provider of employment. That is why as of December 2019, there were 90,584 educated unemployed youth in Nagaland. This includes many qualified Medical Doctors who are willing to serve even as casual em-

ployee. Their livelihood is very important. They have to take care of their aged- parents who have invested all their earnings in the quality education of their children. These are some of the burning issues for the educated unemployed youth in Nagaland. On the other hand, the inservice Medical Doctors are so privileged in Nagaland. Their services are fully secured. Secondly, they enjoy 20% of basic pay as nonpracticing allowance yet many of them have established their own clinic and practice, thereby earning double income. In many government departments and private establishments employees required to work for 7-8 hours. Specially, in Electricity Department and Police Department government servants are duty bound and

compelled to attend duty even at odd hours. All these are in the interest of public service same as Medical Doctors in service. If they all agitate and threatens the State Government to cease work how can we live without electricity. Who will control the law and order situation? All these are essential services for humanity. Therefore I humbly appeal to all the Doctors in the State service to consider your demand to increase the length of service to 65 years.60 years of age or 35 years of service is good enough for all the employees in the medical department because if you occupy the sat for another year, then think about the multiplier effects for other departments and the consequences for the frustrated qualified Medical

Doctors who are in the Que to occupy your seat and earn happily for their livelihood and gladly serve and heal the sick. So, I appeal once again to all the faithful Medical Doctors in Nagaland Government service to think it over keeping in mind your friends and your children who have the qualification but unemployed and withdraw the warning to resign en masse or even to avail mass casual leave. The sick in the Government hospitals are pleading to you not to take such harsh steps. Some of the sick in the hospitals are at least psychologically healed when they see nurses in beautiful uniforms. These are the gift of God. On behalf of Unemployed Medical Doctors in Nagaland Dr Toshimanen Ozukum

Lives of the common Indians

han Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana, totalling some Rs 69,000 crore (less than half the corporate tax relief), sometimes recycling an earlier scheme. The amount per beneficiary was Rs 500, or sometimes Rs 1,000, for three months. Add to this the notional cost of free foodgrains that would otherwise overflow the Food Corporation’s warehouses until they fed animals, supplied ethanol, or simply rotted. In India even more than elsewhere, the hyper-rich grew vastly more so over this time. When some officials suggested taxing this wealth for Covid relief, or at least inviting voluntary surrender of tax concessions, they were chargesheeted. Yet, over 100 of the world’s richest people have declared ‘Please tax us more’. Some US hyperbillionaires have said so since 2017. None of them is thinking of entering a monastery. Maybe they rest cynically assured that their offer will be ignored. Few of their peers would support them; nor, therefore, the governments patronized by the latter. The fact remains that they have argued that the move would be good for the economy and thus in their own long-term

interest. World-renowned economists, most famously Thomas Piketty, have long been saying the same. Of course, other authorities argue the reverse. Asked why this year’s budget is not more pro-poor, one influential economist shrugged and said, “Well, it’s a budget, it’s got to be balanced.” A corporate functionary rejoiced with unusual artlessness that the rich were ‘again’ spending money. What’s new about that, one might ask. Assuming it’s not on a holiday abroad or an imported BMW but on domestic goods and services, how far will such limited high-end expenditure percolate? Might more money be spread more widely, though thinly, if sales of five-rupee biscuit packs picked up across the country, to take a piquant icon of corona economics? For decades now, and flagrantly since the pandemic, the trickledown theory of wealth distribution seems conclusively shattered by rampant and growing inequality. Yet a large section of the powerful uphold the doctrine, just as they deny climate change. Again I remind myself that I am not an economist. Should I therefore dismiss

the evidence of my eyes, borne out by abundant and consistent data from reputable experts and agencies? It seems beyond question that the world contains more direly poor people than three years ago. If the findings overwhelmingly indicate that a disturbing proportion of them belong to India, on what grounds are we to demur? The burden of proof lies with those counter-intuitively arguing the opposite. Yet a feel-good assumption inspires this year’s budget proposals. The calculations can vary, depending on whether we are comparing with last year’s original budget, revised allocation, or actual expenditure; but the upshot will not be substantially different. The education budget has increased by nearly 12 per cent, which could certainly go some way towards overcoming two years’ learning deficit. The finance minister granted that the greatest deficit is among poor children in government schools. Incomprehensibly, her favoured solution is to set up 200 TV channels and create “high quality e-content... via internet, mobile phones”. This is planning for another planet. The Parliamentary Committee on

Education found that digital instruction, even the pedagogically inadequate mobile phone, eluded 77 per cent of India’s children. We have heard nothing about infrastructure for the new National Education Policy. The National Education Mission has less funds than two years ago. The yawning gap in teachers’ posts is sought to be bridged by volunteers under the Vidyanjali scheme. Most appallingly, the mid-day meals budget, last year 13 per cent below 2013-14, has been further reduced. Schools have been closed, but the children were not in hibernation. India has registered distressing (and growing) levels of hunger and malnutrition for years, ratified by global bodies including the United Nations, and denied without countering evidence. As recently revealed before the Supreme Court, the government has no information about reported starvation deaths. Last year, the rural employment guarantee scheme (MGNREGS), the mainstay for those impoverished by the pandemic, started with under two-thirds of the previous year’s allocation, later increased to nearly 90 per

Importance of the All India Civil Services

treatment meted out by the state government wherever necessary. The Centre has also been helping the reallocation of the cadre of the spouse wherever needed, if both husband and wife are members of All India Civil Services. The allocation of cadre state was made on two grounds - consideration of individual’s preference allowed on the basis of place in the merit list and exercise of Centre’s discretion. The strong points of these services were the highlevel of integrity at personal level, independent decisionmaking in public interest and fair play in the handling of the subordinate government servants down the line. The comparative perks and facilities provided to even the young officers considering the general economic situation of the country - are noticeable enough to promote self-confidence and a sense of pride in the All India Civil Services. For long years after Independence, many of their members distinguished themselves in both Central and state governments. They served the cause of national integration and also added to the credit of the leadership in power in any part of India - regardless of its party label. But then there was an inevitable slide reasons for which needed to be examined. Members of the All India Civil Services retained an inbuilt willingness to serve the national government at appropriate stages of their career and looked

forward to that experience to enhance their work profile. They all carried the desire of holding senior most positions that existed only at the Centre. It was therefore the normal thing for the officers serving in their cadre states to aspire to get the opportunity of being picked up by Delhi under the Central quota, which every state knew it had to honour at any point of time. This gave them an added reason to perform well. There could be an occasion when the call from the Centre had to be declined by an officer for some valid personal or family reason, but it was otherwise a mutually agreeable arrangement that operated without impediment. Slowly but steadily. politicisation of bureaucracy and police by the ruling parties of the states created the tendency among officers of holding on to their position in the state for vested interests. The state governments, for political reasons, also started giving weightage to state service officers directly recruited by them, inducing the IAS and IPS to become more and more ‘compliant’. All of this resulted in the unhealthy trend of All India Civil Services officers looking weaker as they moved up the ladder - the Chief Secretary and DGP not minding even the transfers and postings of officers done by the political masters at their back. The Centre was justified in feeling concerned about the heads of administration and the police in

the states not measuring up to their apolitical Constitutional responsibilities. The Central oversight on the two premier All India Civil Services had to be maintained and legitimate procedural correctives made in the larger national interest to ensure competent administration of the democratic state. An unreasoned refusal of the state to release an officer selected by the Centre for deputation with the Government of India - out of political recalcitrance - can adversely affect the great tradition of All India Civil Services contributing to democratic governance through their apolitical public-service oriented work. If the rule about the Centre’s decision prevailing over the state’s desire in the matter of central deputation of an officer acted somewhere as a deterrent against wilful neglect of Constitutional obligations at the top levels of state and police administration, this is welcome. A few long-range steps come to mind for improving matters relating to these Services. First, there should be greater transparency about the appointment of Chief Secretary and DGP of the state. There should be a healthy Central input in the process by way of UPSC in consultation with the state governments, drawing a panel of three most eligible officers of the cadre - on the basis of seniority and performance - to leave it to the state government to make the choice. Sometime back, the Supreme Court

commended this approach when striking down the practice of appointing an ‘officiating’ DGP. There is no reason why this could not be followed in the matter of selecting the Chief Secretary as well.Secondly, for senior positions at the Centre requiring specialised work background, officers available in various states could be given the opportunity of conveying their interest for being considered - this has perhaps been done to an extent already. Third, it would be useful for Cabinet Secretary and Home Secretary - Director of the Intelligence Bureau (DIB) to hold a biennial conference of Chief Secretaries and DGPs purely for discussing the All India Civil Services - related issues of performance, facilities and working conditions. For DGPs, this can be a segment of the annual conference convened by the DIB. Fourth, in keeping with the lofty objective of providing a uniform standard of efficient administration throughout the country after Independence - that had inspired the creation of the All India Civil Services - it is in the fitness of things that during the brief spell of joint training for the new probationers organised by the LBS National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie every year, education on strategic matters and national security had been introduced recently. This will help coopera-

cent. This too proved inadequate, and payments are in serious arrear. Yet this time the budget is back at last year’s original level. Officialdom has an explanation: the job-creating provisions in the budget will obviate the need for MGNREGS. The roller-coaster employment figures do not bear this out. There are no post-pandemic figures at all for the unorganized sector employing most MGNREGS beneficiaries. These are examples of a remarkable absence of crucial data about the poor. The government has not studied the learning deficit in schools, but relied on an NGO’s report. It kept no count of corona casualties, even among frontline workers; nor, needless to say, of deaths among lockdown migrants or protesting farmers. Clearly, the lives of common Indians are a distraction from the serious business of State. You use radar to track planes, not bicycles or pedestrians. tion among the All India Civil Services officers in their later years on issues of national interests and foster in them the spirit of serving anywhere in the country. The idea should be replicated in the joint courses held for Civil Services in latter stages, as well. Last but not the least, there has to be a new emphasis on a further build-up of IAS and IPS as the principal instruments of governance through the intake of best available human material, special facilities of housing, transport and allowances provided in the early years of the career and introduction of the practise of a central deputation after certain periods of work in the cadre states, as far as possible. The Centre heavily depends on these Civil Services and the states should be happy if their officers are selected for such deputation at the Centre. It seems there is a case for increasing the annual intake of officers for these services and meeting the demands of the states in this regard. The states should not hold on to officers needed by the Centre as a show of political assertion - they are always free to take up individual cases where they find it necessary to retain an officer for a longer time for some special requirement of the state. Nothing should be done to further politicise the handling of the All India Civil Services. DC Pathak is a former Director of the Intelligence Bureau. (IANS)

‘We’re being observed internationally, Hijab row: 3-day holiday for schools, colleges not a good devp’, K’taka HC on Hijab row ments. “Our matter is also in the HC,” he said. As far as the legality of the whole issue is concerned, the state government has put its case clearly as per the Karnataka Education Act, he said and added: “Let us wait for the direction from the High Court, till that time the peace needs to be maintained. I appeal to everyone.” On opposition parties in Parliament raising the hijab row and accusing the BJP of polarisation, the CM said, “These are all allegations and do not have any ground.” Proper education has to be given to students in the state. The state government is going by the law on dress code and the same stand has been put before the court, he said. Bommai, on the second day of his visit to the national capital, met Commerce and Industries Minister Piyush Goyal and requested him to give production-linked incentives for toy and FMCG He also spoke to BJP National President J P Nadda over the phone over the state issue. “Naddaji has said he will speak to me after two days,” he added.

BENGALURU, FEB 8 (IANS): With the Hijab row snowballing into a major controversy, the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday said the international community is observing us and it is not a good development. The hearing in the matter will resume after lunch. A bench headed by Justice Krishna S. Dixit said: “For me, Constitution is Bhagvad Gita. We have to act according to the Constitution. I have come to this position after taking oath on the Constitution. The emotions on the issue should be set aside. Wearing a hijab should not become an emotional issue.” It also observed that the government has to answer many questions on the issue. “I am getting mess a ge s f r o m i n nu m e r able numbers. The whole WhatsApp chat is filled with this discussion. The institutions can only work as per the constitution. The government can give orders, but people can question them,” the bench

noted. “The government can’t come to decisions on surmises,” it said. The bench stated that since the government is not agreeing to the petitioner’s request of allowing students to wear hijab for two months, it will take up the case on the basis of merit. “There are protests and students are on roads, I am observing all developments in this regard,” the judge noted. “The gover nment can’t give a ruling against the Quran. Wearing a dress of the choice is a fundamental right. Wearing a hijab is a fundamental right, however, the government can restrict fundamental rights. There is no clear order on uniforms from the government. Wearing a hijab is a matter of privacy. The government order in this regard violates the boundaries of privacy,” the bench observed. The bench also asked the petitioner which page of Quran says that hijab is mandatory. The judge also asked for a copy of the Quran from the court’s library. It also asked the petitioner to read out from

Now hijab row in MP, Minister says dress code only in schools

NEW DELHI, FEB 8 (PTI): As the hijab row intensified further in Karnataka, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday appealed to the Opposition and the people concerned not to escalate the situation by making “provocative” statements and to wait for the High Court order. The state government is going by the law on dress code and the same stand has been put before the court, he said. “Let’s wait for the judiciary’s decision and we will abide by whatever it says,” he added. The chief minister also said that the Karnataka government has declared a holiday in high schools and colleges in the state for the next three days in order to maintain law and order. Replying to queries from reporters here, Bommai said there were some disturbances in a few places and appealed for peace and harmony. “I appeal to students to maintain peace and there is no occasion for any clashes. “I appeal to teachers to ensure peace is maintained. NEW DELHI, FEB 8 (IANS): BJP MP from Pilibhit, Varun Gandhi, on Tuesday criticised the newly appointed Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) vice chancellor, Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit terming her appointment as ‘mediocre’ that can damage human capital and youth’s future. Varun Gandhi’s comment came in view of the press statement released by Pandit after her appointment as JNU VC on Monday, wherein the BJP leader found grammar mistakes. “This press release from the new JNU VC is an exhibition of illiteracy, littered with grammatical mistakes (would strive vs will strive; students friendly vs student-friendly; excellences vs excellence). NEW DELHI, FEB 8 (PTI): About 5,800 NGOs, which did not submit their applications for renewal of FCRA registration, deemed to have ceased to exist according to law. Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai also said in Lok Sabha that FCRA registration of a total of 1,811 NGOs have been cancelled during the last three years - from 2019 to 2021. “About 5,800 FCRA registered associations had not submitted their applications for renewal within stipulated time in accordance with the provisions of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010. FCRA registration of these associations has thus been deemed to have ceased as per section 12 of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010,” he said in a written reply to

a question. Rai said in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the government has given certain relaxations to NGOs so that welfare programmes and Covid-related relief works are not affected. The relaxations include extension till December 31, 2021 the validity of registration certificate of NGOs expiring between September 29, 2020 and December 31, 2021. The validity was further extended with certain conditions up to March 31, 2022, while time period to file annual returns for year 2019-20 was extended by six month i.e. till June 30, 2021 among others, he said. Rai also said that since November, 2021, the FCRA certificate of Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), New Delhi and Missionaries of Charity (MoC), Kolkata was renewed by way of revision.

NEW DELHI, FEB 8 (PTI): Over 17,000 farmers in different parts of the country committed suicide between 2018 and 2020, the Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday. Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Kumar Mishra said the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) compiles statistics on accidental deaths and suicides from states and Union Territories and publishes the same annually as ‘Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India’ (ADSI) report. The report said 5,579 farmers or cultivators committed suicide in 2020.

BHOPAL, FEB 8 (IANS): After the controversy over wearing a headscarf or hijab in schools escalated in Karnataka, a statement in this regard by a Minister has sparked controversy in Madhya Pradesh. Madhya Pradesh School Education Minister Inder Singh Parmar on Tuesday said that hijab will not be allowed in schools in the state. “Students will be allowed only to wear dress code and hijab is not a part of dress code,” Parmar said on Tuesday in Bhopal. Parmar, while talking to media persons also said that he has directed the school education department to ensure that only dress code is allowed in schools in Madhya Pradesh. Sources told IANS that the Madhya Pradesh Government is planning to ban

the holy book to understand where it has been stated so. The bench also asked if all traditions are fundamental practices and what is their jurisdiction. The bench also asked whether they will have to be practiced at all places. It questioned the government at one point that why can’t they allow hijab for two months and what is the problem? Meanwhile, the counsel for the petitioner submitted that the government can only interfere in the matters which are not fundamental, according to religion. The government cannot interfere with things which are fundamental. The petitioner submitted that, “The government should show largeheartedness in the matter. The matter can’t be decided on the premises of secularism. The government should permit the wearing of hijab of the colour of the uniforms. The permission has to be given until examinations are over. Then, they can take a decision on the matter.”

hijab in schools. Also, in a video which went viral on social media, Parmar is being heard saying the department is working (school education department) on a dress code for Chief Minister Rise Schools in order to bring uniformity and equality among students. The minister also claimed that “school uniform isn’t connected to any community, it is for all and it was unfortunate that people are connecting it with a community.” Speaking on this issue, Arif Masood, Congress MLA from Bhopal said that it is an unfortunate statement from the School Education Minister. “It is unfortunate that MP school education minister is making such statement. Daughters look good when covered. Hijab has damaged nothing but has always protected girls,” Masood added.

opposition to the institution of governor by citing a remark made in 1967 by party founder and late Chief Min-

lier, the BJP led by its floor leader Nainar Nagenthiran staged a walkout raising its objection to the move. The resolution for the passage of the Bill was piloted by Stalin. The Chief Minister, referring to the communique of the governor on the return of the Bill on February 1, said the reasons adduced by him were not correct. Ravi, citing the Justice AK Rajan panel recommendations on NEET, said they were based on “guess,” but it was data-driven and based on the opinions furnished by nearly one lakh people, Stalin said.

KO L K ATA , F E B 8 (IANS): In an interesting development, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed at the Calcutta High Court for the removal of the governor from his unconstitutional post. The PIL is likely to come up for hearing on Friday before Chief Justice Prakash Srivastava. The petition filed by lawyer Rama Prasad Sarkar said that Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar is going beyond the purview of the Constitution and is indulging in unconstitutional activities. According to some senior lawyers, this is perhaps

the first case in Calcutta High Court when a petition has been filed for the removal of the governor. The governor and the state government have always been in conflict with each other. There are several occasions when governor Jagdeep Dhankahr has gone against the state’s decisions and criticised them

publicly. The conflict went to such an extent that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote to the President and the Prime Minister asking them for the removal of the governor. Recently during the Lok Sabha session, Trinamool Congress complained against the governor and asked for his removal.

Citing the recommendations of the Sarkaria Commission on Centrestate relations, he said the governor should forward a Bill, if it contradicted a law passed by Parliament, to the President immediately for his assent if advised by the state cabinet. The governor must abide by the advice of the council of ministers, he said. The TN Admission to Undergraduate Medical Degree Courses Bill was passed on September 13, 2021 by the Assembly. On Tuesday, it was adopted amid thumping of desks and Speaker M Appavu announced that it has been adopted unanimously. The Speaker said the Bill would be sent to Raj Bhavan today to forward it to the Centre to get Presidential assent. Stalin implied DMK’s long standing

ister, CN Annadurai. “I believe that our governor will not create such a situation.” He expressed confidence that Ravi would forward the Bill to the President without any delay. Stalin apparently slammed the governor for returning the Bill and said by sending it back, the right of Tamil Nadu and the Assembly’s sovereignty have been questioned. It was an attack on the state’s autonomy and the doctrine of cooperative federalism has been turned topsy-turvy and that is a matter of grief and concern, he said. Ear-

CHENNAI, FEB 8 (PTI): The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Tuesday adopted again, the anti-NEET Bill, returned days ago to the government by Governor RN Ravi and the ruling DMK and principal opposition AIADMK reaffirmed their opposition to the test based on the Dravidian ideology. Chief Minister M K Stalin labelled NEET a killer exam and said he believed that the Governor would forward without any delay the Bill re-adopted, now to the President for his assent. “It is the Constitutional duty of the Governor to forward it to the President. I think and expect the Governor to do that duty hereafter at least,” he said. The Bill was passed followed discussions that stretched to 3 hours and the test was yet again dismissed by Stalin as one that went against the principles of Constitution including social justice and equality. As per the Constitution, the action of Ravi in sending back the Bill to the Assembly was not a correct decision, the government said. The CM targeted the governor on the return of the Bill and said it raised questions over Centre-state relations. He wondered if the action of the governor in sending back the Bill that was enacted based on a policy decision and which was passed by a duly elected government, did not go against the principle of democracy. He said the governor was only an appointee, ap-

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2022 BUSINESS BSE’s Gold climbs RBI begins three-day monetary consolidated net Rs 144; silver declines Rs 76 policy meet to decide on key rates profits up 86%

NEW DELHI, FEB 8 (PTI): Gold price in the national capital on Tuesday rallied by Rs 144 to Rs 48,167 per 10 grams, reflecting overnight gains in international precious metal prices, according to HDFC Securities. In the previous trade, the yellow metal settled at Rs 48,023 per 10 grams. Silver, however, dipped by Rs 76 to Rs 61,607 per kg from Rs 61,683 per kg in the previous trade. “Spot gold prices for 24 carat gold at Delhi were up by Rs 144 reflecting overnight gain in COMEX gold prices,” Tapan Patel, Senior Analyst (commodities) at HDFC Securities, said. In the international market, gold was trading marginally lower at USD 1,819 per ounce and silver was flat at USD 22.85 per ounce. “Gold prices traded marginally down with spot prices at COMEX trading at USD 1,819 per ounce on Tuesday,” he added.

MUMBAI, FEB 8 (PTI): The Reserve Bank’s ratesetting panel began its three-day deliberations on Tuesday to decide the next monetary policy in the backdrop of Budget 202223, inflationary concerns and evolving geo-political situation. Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das headed six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is scheduled to announce the policy resolution on Thursday. The meeting was to start on Monday but it was postponed by a day in view of Maharashtra declaring public holiday on February 7 to mourn the death of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. It is widely anticipated that the MPC is likely to maintain the status quo on the benchmark interest rate or repo rate. Experts, however, are of the opinion that the MPC may change the policy stance from ‘accommodative’ to ‘neutral’ and tinker with the reverse-repo rate as part of the liquidity

normalisation process. If the RBI maintains status quo in policy rate on Thursday, it would be the tenth consecutive time since the rate remains unchanged. The central bank had last revised the policy rate on May 22, 2020, in an off-policy cycle to perk up demand by cutting interest rate to a historic low. According to Brickwork Ratings, the RBI may continue to hold the policy rates at current levels in the upcoming policy meeting. “We expect the MPC to start increasing the policy rates beginning with normalising the policy corridor between repo and reverse repo rate. We expect the

RBI to hike the reverse repo rate in its April 2022 policy meeting,” it said. The outlook on inflation and growth may remain unchanged for the current fiscal, while the statement is keenly awaited for its forward guidance on inflation and the GDP for the next fiscal, it added. The last MPC held in December 2021 had kept the benchmark interest rate unchanged at 4 per cent and decided to continue with its accommodative stance against the backdrop of concerns over the emergence of the new coronavirus variant Omicron. The MPC has been tasked by the government to keep inflation in the range of 2-6 per cent. Citing the massive spike in credit growth during the first half and the steeper fall in deposits and the resultant rise in term money rates, coupled with the record high borrowings, an SBI report has called for a 20 bps increase in reverse repo rate outside the MPC ambit.

Khan claims recent attacks UK PM under fire over ‘Trumpian’ attack on rival inImran Balochistan had foreign support

Party MP Caroline Lucas said Tuesday that Johnson’s attack was “utterly shameful” and “straight out of (the) Trumpian playbook”. “Words have consequences -- we saw that on (the) streets of Westminster yesterday evening. He’s poisoning our politics & must apologise or go.” Johnson himself took to Twitter to criticise Starmer’s treatment Monday as “absolutely disgraceful”. “All forms of harassment of our elected representatives are completely unacceptable,” he said, adding: “I thank the police for responding swiftly.” His spokesman told

Iraq’s Parliament fails to vote on new President

B A G H DA D, F E B 8 (IANS): Iraq’s Parliament has failed to hold a session to vote on a new President due to a lack of quorum and disputes among political blocs. A source from Parliament’s media office told Xinhua news agency that the session was indefinitely postponed due to a lack of the required two-thirds quorum of the 329-seat Parliament, and turned into a meeting to address various topics. “We didn’t attend today’s (Monday) session because our candidate Hoshyar Zebari was suspended due to a decision by the Federal Supreme Court, and no one can obtain the quorum unless we are present,” Mishaan al-Jubouri, a lawmaker from the Sunni al-Siyada Alliance, told Xinhua. Zebari was the candidate of the Sadrist Movement, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), and al-Siyada Alliance to run

for presidential election. On Sunday, the federal court decided to suspend the nomination of Zebari as a candidate for the presidency until a corruption lawsuit against him would be resolved. Later, the KDP, headed by the Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani, and the al-Siyada Alliance, headed by Sunni businessman Khamis al-Khanjar, decided to boycott Monday’s parliament session to pave the way for further negotiations between the political blocs. On February 5, the Sadrist Movement, loyal to Shia cleric Moqtada alSadr, which won 73 seats out of 329 seats, also decided to boycott Monday’s session. On January 31, Parliament announced the names of 25 candidates for the presidential election scheduled for February 7, including incumbent President Barham Salih who

represents the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, former Foreign Minister and Finance Minister Zebari from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), and Rizgar Mohammed Amin, former chief judge of the Iraqi Special Tribunal that organized the trial of late leader Saddam Hussein. According to the Iraqi constitution, lawmakers should elect a new Iraqi president from the candidates by a two-thirds majority of its members, and the president will be limited to serving two fouryear terms. Once elected, the new president will ask the largest parliamentary alliance to name a prime ministerdesignate to form a government within 30 days. On October 10, 2021, Iraq held the fifth parliamentary election, where alSadr’s Sadrist Movement emerged as the biggest winner with 73 out of the 329 seats.

Iran nuclear talks resume amid pressure for results VIENNA, FEB 8 (AP): Diplomats from Iran and world powers reconvened in Vienna on Tuesday to seek a deal reviving Tehran’s 2015 nuclear accord, with pressure mounting for results soon. Negotiators from Iran and the remaining parties to the agreement — Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China — got back to work after a break of a little over a week to return to their capitals for consultations. The United States has participated indirectly in the talks because it withdrew from the accord in 2018 under then President Donald Trump. President Joe Biden has signaled that he wants to rejoin the deal. The accord, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, granted Iran sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program. Under Trump, the US reimposed heavy sanctions on Iran.

The committee requires at least 15 percent, or 54, of the 360 Conservative MPs to write such letters to trigger a party leadership challenge. Johnson has sought to move beyond the scandal by changing his top team, with several senior aides departing and a new chief of staff and director of communications hired. As part of a minor reshuffle on Tuesday, Johnson named Jacob Rees-Mogg as Minister for Brexit Opportunities and Government Efficiency. When Johnson’s longtime chief policy advisor Munira Mirza unexpectedly quit last Thursday, she specifically cited the Jimmy Saville claim in her resignation letter made public. Meanwhile, Johnson is awaiting the outcome of a Metropolitan Police Service investigation into the numerous Downing Street gatherings and whether lockdown rules were breached.

ISLAMABAD, FEB 8 (PTI): Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday claimed that terrorists involved in the recent deadly attacks in the troubled southwestern Balochistan province had foreign support. At least nine soldiers and 20 militants were killed in clashes and follow-up cleanup operations after Baloch rebels attacked Naushki and Panjgur areas of the province last week. The banned Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the attacks. The separatist outfit has recently stepped up attacks on security forces and installations. The security forces had claimed that during the fight they intercepted communication between the militants and their handlers in Afghanistan and India. China locks down southern city as omicron variant surges BEIJING, FEB 8 (AP): China has ordered inhabitants of the southern city of Baise to stay home and suspended transportation links amid a surge in COVID-19 cases at least partly linked to the omicron variant. Classes have been suspended, non-essential businesses closed and mass testing of residents ordered. Restaurants are only permitted to serve take-out. Traffic lights have been switched to red only to remind drivers to stay home. As of Tuesday, 135 cases had been reported in the city — at least two of them found to be omicron, health authorities said. The city has become the latest to be placed under lockdown in keeping with China’s “zero-tolerance” approach to the pandemic. The policy requires strict measures be applied even when only a small number of cases have been found. A major concern is

Macron heads to Kyiv after talks with Putin KYIV, FEB 8 (AP): Diplomatic efforts to defuse the tensions around Ukraine continued on Tuesday with French President Emmanuel Macron expected in Kyiv the day after hours of talks with the Russian leader in Moscow yielded no apparent breakthroughs. Macron is set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as fears of a possible Russian invasion mount. Moscow has massed over 100,000 troops near Ukraine’s borders, but insists it has no plans to attack Ukraine. The Kremlin has demanded guarantees from the West that NATO will not accept Ukraine and other former Soviet nations as members, halt weapon deployments there and roll back its forces from Eastern Europe — demands the U.S. and NATO reject as nonstarters. Western leaders in recent weeks have engaged in high-level diplomacy in the hope of de-escalating the tensions and preventing an attack.

Emmanuel Macron

Macron sat down with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday for talks that lasted more than five hours. After the long meeting, the two leaders emphasized the need for more talks, while also registering their disagreements. Putin noted that the U.S. and NATO have ignored Moscow’s demands, but signaled his readiness to continue the negotiations. He also warned that Ukraine’s accession to NATO could trigger a war between Russia and the alliance. “If Ukraine becomes a NATO member and moves to reclaim Crimea, European countries will automatically be drawn into a military

conflict with Russia,” Putin said, noting that “there will be no winners.” Macron said he had a “substantial, deep” discussion with Putin, with a focus on conditions that could help de-escalation. “We tried to build converging elements,” he said. “The upcoming days will be crucial and deep discussions together will be needed.” He added that it’s Europe’s duty to find a solution to try to rebuild good-neighbourly ties with Russia. In Washington, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz met with U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday. Scholz will also travel to Kyiv and Moscow on Feb. 14-15. Biden vowed that the Nord Stream 2 Russiato-Germany gas pipeline, which has been completed but is not yet operating, will be blocked “if Russia invades, that means tanks and troops crossing the border of Ukraine again.” The move would hurt Russia economically but also cause supply problems for

Germany. Scholz warned Moscow that “a lot more could happen than they’ve perhaps calculated with themselves” in case of an invasion. U.S. officials have painted the threat of an offensive on Ukraine as imminent — war nings Moscow has scoffed at, a c c u s i n g Wa s h i n g t o n of fueling the tensions around Ukraine. Russia and Ukraine have been locked in a bitter tug-of-war since 2014, when, following the ouster of Ukraine’s Kremlin-friendly president, Moscow annexed Crimea and threw its weight behind a separatist insurgency in the east of the country. The fighting between Russia-backed rebels and Ukrainian forces in the east has since killed over 14,000 people. France and Germany in 2015 helped broker a peace deal, known as the Minsk agreements, that ended large-scale hostilities in the region but failed to bring about a political settlement of the conflict.

motions and roll out social media advertising programs. The candidates’ names and pictures are displayed on giant billboards along major highways. However, unlike in the past, the candidates are not expected to barnstorm cities and towns, croon love songs, hug babies, and dance on stage to win votes.

For the third year running, the government asked people to remain in place to avoid a major spread, although such calls had only a slight effect on the numbers of trips taken. Despite the occasional regional outbreak, China has largely brought the pandemic under control through lockdowns, mass testing, case tracing, mask mandates and other strict measures. However, House of Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle, a non-partisan administrator of parliamentary business, warned MPs their “words have consequences” and reiterated that Johnson’s original claim was “inappropriate” and could “inflame opinions”. But the incidents appear to have heightened unease within the restive Conservative Party at Johnson’s conduct -- just as he attempts a major reset after months of tumult. A video posted online showed the Labour leader being jostled before police, who arrested two people, intervened and escorted him to a car. Within hours, Tory and other lawmakers were repeating calls for Johnson to say sorry. “PM -- apologise please,” Conservative MP Tobias Ellwood wrote on Twitter. “Let’s stop this drift towards a Trumpian style of politics from becoming the norm. LONDON, FEB 8 (AGENCIES): Britain’s embattled Prime Minister Boris Johnson faced renewed pressure Tuesday to apologise to opposition leader Keir Starmer for what critics have called a misleading “Trumpian” attack on him last week. Johnson -- already facing calls to step down after months of scandals -- accused Starmer of failing in 2013 as head of the country’s prosecution service to take action against notorious celebrity paedophile Jimmy Savile. Labour leader Starmer, who led the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) from 2008 to 2013, was not personally involved in the case but has previously apologised on behalf of the CPS for its failures. Critics, including numerous Conservative MPs, have decried Johnson’s claim -- made during a fractious parliamentary session -- noting it has been propagated by far-right conspiracy theorists. Should You Wash This Food?

Poultry We get it: Raw chicken is slimy when it comes out of the package, and you want to wash it off. But according to the USDA, it’s safer to destroy bacteria when you cook it. A recent study looked at people who washed raw poultry for a meal. Sixty percent had bacteria in their sink afterward, and 26% had transferred bacteria to their salad lettuce. Prewashed Salads If the bag says your greens have been pre-washed, there’s no need to send it through the salad spinner. Many prepared lettuces go through a triple wash system to remove natural debris. Eggs Right before a chicken lays an egg, a thin coating called a bloom covers the shell. This keeps bacteria out of its tiny pores. Commercial egg producers clean eggs in a way that keeps that layer intact. Washing eggs at home doesn’t remove germs; it lets them inside instead. Always keep your eggs in the refrigerator, and cook them thoroughly. Red Meat You can’t wash all the bacteria off red meat. Some is deep in the fibers. Any that come off will cross-contaminate your sink and everything in it. The safest way to kill all the bacteria on red meat is to cook it to an internal temperature of at least 145 degrees. Mushrooms On one hand, the USDA recommends that you wash any produce that doesn’t say “pre-washed” on the label. On the other, mushrooms are little sponges that suck up water -- and maybe some bacteria with it. Clean your store-bought mushrooms with a damp cloth instead. If you gather mushrooms like morels in the wild, soak them in salted lukewarm water for 30 minutes. Then rinse with clean water until all the dirt is gone. Fish Fish is in the same category as poultry and red meat: If you wash it, you will spread bacteria around your kitchen. Cook it off instead. The only exceptions to this rule are clams, oysters, mussels, and scallops that you get fresh. They may need a rinse to get rid of sand and dirt.

Pasta There’s no food safety reason to wash off your pasta, either before you cook it or afterward. Some people rinse pasta after it’s cooked to remove some of the starch, but this makes it harder for sauce to cling to the noodles. Avocado You don’t eat the peel of the avocado, so why should you wash it? Because when you slice it, you can transfer bacteria and dirt from the peel to the avocado. Cantaloupe and Other Melons Melons grow on the ground, so pests and microorganisms from dirt and fertilizer are all over them. Cantaloupe in particular has netted skin that traps bacteria. Wash all melons carefully right before you cut into them so you don’t move bacteria from the rind to the flesh. Grains Most of the grains you buy in the U.S. go through processing and are shelf-stable. There’s no safetyrelated reason to wash them. But some grains, like quinoa and farro, come out of the bag pretty dusty. If you want to rinse them, feel free. Canned Drinks Your call. If you’re worried about what might have touched the can before you put your lips on it, give the top of it a good wash. It’s

OK to use soap in this case because cans aren’t porous. Beans Both dried and canned beans are safe without washing them. But you won’t hurt dried beans if you wash the dust off of them. And if you rinse canned beans, you can cut the amount of sodium by almost half, on average. For example, a can of undrained kidney beans has 327 milligrams of sodium. If you rinse and drain them, they have 164 milligrams. Tip: How to Wash Produce Wash your hands with hot water and soap first. Use clean, cold water to wash the produce, and dry with a paper towel. Use a vegetable brush on thick-skinned produce, like apples and melons. Soak cauliflower, broccoli, and lettuce for 2 minutes in cold water. Put delicate berries in a colander and spray them with distilled water right before you use them. Are Food Washes Worth It? Produce washes you buy at a store are safe. But that doesn’t mean they are the best way to wash your produce. Distilled or cold, clean tap water does the trick just fine. Soak your fruits and veggies for a minute or two to lessen the chances of getting sick. Medically Reviewed by Kathleen M. Zelman, MPH, RD, LD

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2022

Foods most likely to give you food poisoning Sprouts They’re seeds that have sprouted. Raw and lightly cooked sprouts, especially clover and alfalfa, have caused multistate outbreaks of food poisoning every year since 2006. The same warm, humid conditions that nurture sprouts also promote salmonella, listeria, and E. coli. You might be tempted to toss these antioxidant-packed seedlings fresh into salads and sandwiches. But it’s safer to cook the sprouts first. Washing won’t kill the germs. Raw Milk It’s one of the most dangerous sources of foodborne illness and is illegal in some states. It’s milk from animals that hasn’t been heated, or pasteurized, to kill bacteria. Raw milk can harbor E. coli, listeria, campylobacter, and salmonella. They can cause diarrhea for days, vomiting, and serious illnesses like Guillain-Barré syndrome that can lead to paralysis. Check your milk container to ensure it’s pasteurized, especially at farmers markets. Eggs Annually, salmonellatainted eggs cause 79,000 U.S. cases of food poisoning and 30 deaths. Chickens can pass salmonella to eggs before the shell forms. Bacteria can also infect eggs through poultry poop. Refrigerate eggs at or below 40 F. Some products and recipes call for uncooked eggs. Use pasteurized eggs (they’re hard to find) or DIY by dunking eggs in 140 F water using sous vide for at least 3½ minutes. The eggs may thicken slightly. Flour You probably wouldn’t dip a spoon into raw flour and eat it. But what about cookie dough or cake batter? It’s rare, but raw flour

can be contaminated with E. coli during harvesting, grinding, and sifting. Bleaching flour won’t kill E. coli, which can cause bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and even kidney failure and death. Boxed cake mixes and prepared cookie dough also can harbor germs. Bagged Lettuce Fresh salads are another top source of food poisoning. But pinpointing the cause can be tricky. Some outbreaks are tied to a specific kind of greens, often romaine lettuce and spinach, or to certain growers or packers. Salmonella and other bacteria can be traced to dirty irrigation water, soil, or human hands. Germs multiply in the juice from cut leaves and can get trapped inside the bags. They can cling to the leaves even after washing. Chicken This poultry is America’s No. 1 choice of meat. And every year, about a million of us get sick after eating chicken. Like all animals, chickens have bacteria in their gut. Pathogens such as campylobacter and salmonella can get on the birds during processing and packaging, and go all the way to your cutting board and utensils. Don’t wash raw chicken because it can contaminate your

kitchen. Cooking to proper temperature kills bacteria. Pre-cut Melon Every year, 1.35 million people in the U.S. get salmonella. Nearly 27,000 are hospitalized. Infections are more common in the summer, when more of us enjoy watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew melon. The vines grow on the ground, where the rinds can pick up germs. Their surface can be hard to sanitize. Pre-cut melon can pass on norovirus, listeria, and other harmful agents. Washed, whole melons are best. Refrigerate pre-cut fruits or pack them in ice. Oysters Slurping fresh oysters right out of the shell can be a briny treat. These mollusks draw food from coastal waters through their gills. They trap viruses and bacteria the same way. Eating tainted raw oysters can give you vibriosis, which causes diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and chills in more than 80,000 Americans every year. You also can catch norovirus, sometimes called “stomach flu.” The only safe way to enjoy oysters is to cook them. Raw Milk Cheeses Easting soft cheeses made with raw milk is much riskier than pasteurized cheeses. You’re 160 times more likely pick up

listeria with queso fresco, feta, brie, Camembert, and blue-veined varieties such as Roquefort. Listeria can spread beyond your gut and cause headaches, loss of balance, and convulsions. It also may lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, or premature delivery. And your newborn can catch listeria from you. Ground Beef E. coli became a household name in the early 1990s, when more than 700 adults and kids fell ill from undercooked hamburger patties sold by a fast-food chain. Four people died. E. coli remains a mainstay culprit behind food poisoning outbreaks. The bacteria is inside humans and animals naturally. Cook steaks and roasts to 145 F on the inside. Ground beef and pork need to reach 160 F to be safe. Hot Dogs These ballpark staples are precooked. Americans eat a whopping 20 billion of them each year. But they can pick up listeria after they’ve been packaged. To avoid illness, hot dogs should be just that: hot. Always reheat before you eat. Invisible Threat You can come down with food poisoning from 20 minutes to 6 days after your meal. The last thing you ate isn’t always what got you sick To avoid foodborne illness, take it seriously. It sends 128,000 people to the hospital every year. Wash hands and surfaces often, separate foods to avoid cross-contamination, and keep hot food hot and cold food cold. You can’t see or smell germs and viruses the same way you see or smell spoiled food. Medically Reviewed by Kathleen M. Zelman, MPH, RD, LD

Formula One drivers to stop taking the knee pre-race LONDON, FEB 8 (AGENCIES): Formula One will no longer set time aside for drivers to take the knee ahead of races as it looks to introduce more concrete actions to combat racism, Chief Executive Stefano Domenicali told Sky Sports on Tuesday. Formula One launched its “We Race As One” diversity, inclusion and sustainability platform in 2020, which included a pre-race moment when drivers gathered on the grid to express their support for the initiative with a gesture of their choice. “I think it was the time to move from just a gesture recognising something that’s really important to a plan,” Domenicali said. “I think the gesture has been an important gesture because we need to respect everyone as always. But now is the time to move on and take some other action.” Some drivers, most notably seventimes world champion Lewis Hamilton who is a vocal advocate for human rights, ending racial inequality and environmental causes, chose to take the knee.

Australia women win final ODI to finish Ashes series unbeaten MELBOURNE, FEB 8 (IANS): Australia’s 20-year-old pace bowler Annabel Sutherland finished with career-best ODI figures of 4/31 to reduce England to 163 before skipper Meg Lanning’s half-century took the hosts through to an eight-wicket victory in the final One-day International of the multi-format Ashes on Tuesday. Young all-rounder Sutherland led the way with 4/31 at Junction Oval as England were bowled out for a paltry 163, before contributions from all the top-four batters ensured Australia cruised home with more than 13 overs to spare. The win means Australia finished the multiformat series without a loss and with a 12-4 scoreline. After opting to bat, England lost debutant Emma Lamb (0) and skipper Heather Knight (9) inside the first hour to slump to 19/2 in nine overs. The experienced duo of Tammy Beaumont (50) and Nat Sciver (46) combined to put on an 88-run

stand but were extremely cautious in their approach. They couldn’t find a single boundary between overs 18-30, and the pressure of scoring big eventually got to both the batters as they fell in a span of five overs. Thereafter, it all went downhill for the visitors. Attacking batter Danni Wyatt (9) was Sutherland’s first victim and the wickets continued to fall in quick succession as England lost their last seven wickets for just 39 runs to be dismissed midway through their final over for 163. While the

England batters looked to avoid damage, Australia threw caution to the wind from the start, with openers Alyssa Healy and Rachael Haynes adding 47 runs in the powerplay. Freya Davies was the only England bowler who looked like taking a wicket and eventually did, breaking the strong opening stand for 74 by dismissing Healy (42). Sophie Ecclestone made it two in two overs as she got rid of the other set batter, Haynes, for 31. After the slight setback, skipper Meg Lanning

and Ellyse Perry ensured Australia got through to an easy win. Lanning played the aggressor, smashing seven fours and a six en route her unbeaten 57 while Perry was solid at the other end with 31 not out. Brief scores: England Women 163 in 49.3 overs (Tammy Beaumont 50, Nat Sciver 46; Megan Schutt 2/25, Annabel Sutherland 4/31) lost to Australia Women 164/2 in 36.2 overs (Alyssa Healy 42, Rachael Haynes 31, Meg Lanning 57 not out, Ellyse Perry 31 not out) by eight wickets.

AFI mourns Asian Beijing claims Gu as a daughter after golden day PVL 2022: B’luru Torpedoes bounce Games gold medallist back to defeat Kochi Blue Spikers Sobti’s demise

BEIJING, FEB 8 (AGENCIES): Teenager Eileen Gu nailed a new trick in the final run of the freeski Big Air on Tuesday, delivering host nation China its quickest gold rush at a Winter Games. The Chinese capital claimed the San Franciscoborn Gu as a daughter of Beijing after she pulled off an impressive “1620,” a trick she had never done before in competition, to beat French skier Tess Ledeux. read more The 18-year-old said she would celebrate by eating a chocolate bar by San Francisco confectioner Ghirardelli, play the piano and write in her journal before getting back to practice ahead of her slopestyle event on Feb 14. “I brought a package of holiday-themed peppermint bark Ghirardelli chocolate, so I’m going to open that today. I’ve been saving it for my first final. It’s kind of an exciting moment,” she told reporters. Gu’s gold, along with podium-topping performances by speedskater Ren Ziwei and his mixed team relay compatriots, put China temporarily at the top of the

medal tally on Tuesday. The country has won three golds and two silver medals since the opening ceremony on Friday night. See the Winter Games medal tally here. Other glittering performances on the slopes and ice included Austrian Matthias Mayer, who became the first man to win an Alpine skiing gold at three consecutive Games after claiming the super-G title. American Nathan Chen shocked Japan’s “Ice Prince” Yuzuru Hanyu with a world record in the figure skating short programme, giving him a massive lead in their battle for the gold

medal. Despite enormous obstacles created by the COVID-19 pandemic, Beijing’s snow spectacle has triggered an early gold rush for winter sports goods in China, with online purchases of equipment and clothing from brands such as Anta Sports and Descente surging. Olympic fever has even spread to China’s stock market with a buying frenzy unleashed on shares linked to the Games. Organisers on Tuesday said more local spectators would be invited to watch, in a show of confidence that COVID-19 is under control within the closed loop that separates Games personnel

from the Chinese public. PENG WATCHES Watching Gu from the stands on Tuesday was Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai, whose whereabouts became a cause for international concern in November when she appeared to accuse a party official of sexual assault. Peng was seen in the stands wearing a black knit hat with the Olympic rings on them, a black coat with the Chinese flag and a mask with the Beijing 2022 logo. Gu said she was honoured by her attendance. “I’m really grateful that she’s happy and healthy and out there doing her things again,” an ebullient Gu said after her win. The freestyle skier was less forthcoming about whether she still holds a U.S. passport, refusing to directly answer questions about her citizenship. China does not allow dual nationality, and state media have previously reported that the 18-year-old renounced her U.S. citizenship after she became a Chinese national at the age of 15. Gu would not confirm that on Tuesday.

lify the striking prowess of the opposition. But, in the third set, Bengalur u fought back thanks to the brilliance of Lavmeet Katariya, Pankaj Sharma and G.S. Varun, who not only thwarted the rival defence but came up with telling spikes. It was a super spike from Varun, which saw the team clinch the issue and keep the team’s hopes alive. Bengaluru took an early comfortable 6-2 lead in the fourth set before Deepesh Kumar Sinha and Cody scripted a Kochi fightback.

But, the power of Varun, Pankaj and the wonderful display at the net by Ranjit saw the team win the set and take the issue into the decider. In the final set, it was anybody’s match, but unfortunately for Kochi, the consistent Deepesh had to limp off with a left ankle injury with the score reading 5-3 in his team’s favour. Though his substitute Abhinav and Raheem came up with some powerful spikes, Bengaluru rode on the brilliance of Lovemeet, Pankaj to clinch the set and the match.

NEW DELHI, FEB 8 (IANS): The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) on Tuesday expressed its deep shock at the passing away of Asian Games medallist in hammer and discus thrower, Praveen Kumar Sobti, here on Tuesday at the age of 74. He also won the 1974 Tehran Asian Games silver in discus, besides silver in the 1966 Commonwealth Games at Kingston in 1966. Sobti also competed in the 1968 Mexico City and 1972 Munich Olympic Games where he produced his career-best hammer throw (60.84m) and discus throw (53.12m), respectively. Mandhana gains in latest ICC ODI rankings for batters DUBAI, FEB 8 (IANS): India’s top-order batter Smriti Mandhana has risen two places, to fifth, while captain Mithali Raj continues to hold on to her second position in the latest Women’s ODI Player Rankings for Batters released on Tuesday. Mandhana, on 710 points, has displaced South Africa’s Lizelle Lee (702) and England’s Tammy Beaumont (696) in the ranking, which is led by Australia’s Alyssa Healy (742 points). Meanwhile, dominant performances in the first two ODIs of the Women’s Ashes have seen several Australian players climb the charts in ODI Player Rankings. Having dropped to the second spot after the series against India in September 2021, Australia all-rounder Ellyse Perry is back at the top of the Women’s ODI Player Rankings for All-rounders with 407 points. India’s Deepti Sharma is fourth with 299 points. Perry was the ‘Player of the Match’ in the second ODI, first returning figures of 3/12 to reduce England to 129 all

out, before scoring a 40 off 64 balls to take Australia close to victory. Perry also made huge gains in the bowlers’ rankings, rising seven spots to break into the top-10 and occupying the No.9 spot. There hasn’t been much for England to cheer about in the ODI leg of the Ashes but Katherine Brunt’s all-round brilliance in the first ODI, where she finished with 3/12 and scored 32 not out, sees her gain three spots to No.5 in the all-rounders’ rankings. Brunt also jumped a spot to No.6 in the bowlers’ rankings. Despite England ending up on the losing side in the first two ODIs, Sophie Ecclestone bowled economically and jumped to third with a career-best 717 rating points in the ODI Player Rankings for Bowlers, which has India’s Jhulan Goswami in second spot. Perry’s teammate Beth Mooney too climbed the charts for batters, rising five places to occupy the third spot behind Mithali Raj after a Player-of-the-Matchwinning 73 in the first ODI of the series.
