‘Leader of tukde-tukde gang’: PM launches vitriolic attack on Cong

NEW DELHI, FEB 7 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched a no-holds-barred attack on the Congress, saying the Britishers have gone but the party has made the “divide and rule” policy its character and has become the “leader of the tukde-tukde gang”. Replying to the debate in Lok Sabha on Motion of Thanks to President Ram Nath Kovind’s address to the Parliament, Modi said the Congress’ “arrogance” has not gone away despite multiple electoral defeats and its “misdeeds” seem to indicate that it has made up its mind not to come to power for the next 100 years. He said that many states have sampled and rejected the grand old party while sharing data of states that rejected Congress. “After losing so many elections there is no change in your (Congress) ‘Ahankaar’ (ego),” he said. “Nagaland voted for Congress 24 years ago, Odisha voted for you 27 years ago. You won with a full majority in Goa in 1994, which is 28 years ago. In 1988, Tripura voted for Congress 34

years ago. UP, Bihar, Gujarat last voted for Congress government in 1985,” PM said. He asserted that many people have come and gone but the country is immortal. The country has been united and great, is so and will remain so, he said. The Congress was winning elections since 1971 on the slogan ‘eradicate poverty’, however, poverty didn’t end but people ousted that party, he said and added that people in several states have rejected the party for decades. “The question is not about elections, it is about intentions. Despite being in power for 50 years, why are the people of the country repeatedly rejecting them? Wherever people have

taken the right path, they did not allow you (Congress) to enter again,” he said. Modi noted that if the BJP loses one election its ecosystem works on it for months and slammed the Congress, saying that after so many defeats, “neither your arrogance goes away, nor your ecosystem allows your arrogance to go away”. The Prime Minister went on say that the Congress “crossed all limits” during the COVID pandemic. During the first wave, when people were following lockdowns and COVID norms, the Congress was standing at Mumbai Station and scaring innocent labourers into fleeing to their native states, he said.

“You have committed a big sin,” he added. D u r i n g h i s n e a r ly 100-minute speech, he also accused the opposition party of indulging in “blind opposition” and strengthening separatism. It is true that criticism is the ornament of a vibrant democracy, but “blind opposition” is an “insult to democracy”, he said. Modi said it would have been good if the Opposition would have accepted and welcomed with an open heart whatever the country has achieved by ‘Sabka prayas’. Hitting out at the Congress, Modi said, “Sometimes a thought comes to my mind, with their statements, their programmes, their misdeeds, the way you speak and connect with issues, it seems you have made up your mind of not coming back to power for 100 years. Nobody does this.” “If they had little hope that people would bless them they would not have done so. However, if you have only decided to (not come back to power) for a hundred years, I have also made preparations,” he said. (Cont’d on p-7)

Complete ban on sale and consumption of alcohol not feasible, says Governor Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, FEB 7 (NPN): Nagaland governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi on Monday said complete ban on sale and consumption of alcohol was “not feasible”, but the extent of consumption and sale of alcohol could be curtailed in a gradual or phased manner. Answering a question raised by one faculty member during his visit to St Joseph University (SJU) at Ikishe model village, Chümoukedima on Monday, Prof. Mukhi spoke of his experience as excise minister of Delhi government and lieutenant governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. He said that a thorough study conducted in the two territories proved the fallacy of prohibition. He claimed that the increase in sale of alcohol would result in higher income for States. He remarked: “Even if a State were to earn higher revenue through sale of alcohol, it would be spending more than the revenue in terms of healthcare, law and order and judicial processes.” This was stated in a press release issued by SJU. Earlier, the governor

Prof Jagdish Mukhi during his visit to CIHSR, Monday. (NP)

visited Christian Institute of Health Sciences & Research (CIHSR) and held a meeting with the district administration and police at Police House, Chümoukedima. After inspecting the wards at CIHSR, he addressed some staff of the hospital, during which he acknowledged the services of all frontline warriors, including doctors, nurses and paramedics in handling Covid-19 pandemic effectively. He expressed happiness that CIHSR was breaking new grounds of learning as the only teaching hospital in the State running postgraduation DNB courses in Medicine, Surgery, Family Medicine and several other subjects. The Governor said that as two professions of healthcare and education

formed the twin foundations for development of a nation, CIHSR combined within itself both of these and was now ready to offer high quality medical care to people. He further remarked that students and administration of CIHSR have a crucial role to play in promoting access to quality healthcare and taking healthcare services to remotest corners of the State. With the goal of providing universal healthcare, he urged the State government and hospital management to take steps to make affordable healthcare services available to the farthest regions in the State, which would in turn aid in a progressive Nagaland marching ahead in the 21st century. DIMAPUR, FEB 7 (NPN): Angami Public Organisation (APO) has reiterated its resolve of discouraging and disallowing staging of protest rallies, strikes, imposing bandhs, etc, in the State Capital by any organisation, union and society whether registered or unregistered without its prior consultation. Reaffirming the February 3, 1996 resolution in this regard, APO president Razouvoto Chatsu and general secretary Savilie Kruneilie in a representation to the chief secretary

said the idea behind the resolution was to maintain and ensure peaceful atmosphere for a healthy living and all-round development. Noting that organising protest rallies in different forms by various organizations had become a regular event in the State Capital, thereby affecting normal life of citizens, particularly the students and business community, APO said many precious lives were lost and properties, both private and public, worth crores of rupees were dam-

aged in the past when such protests took a violent turn. APO acknowledged that public protest and staging a dharna for demanding justice from the government might be a constitutional right of citizens, adding that APO was even prepared to render its full support and cooperation through proper consultation. The organisation however appealed to Naga public in general not to misconstrue that APO was imposing its diktat upon others by virtue that State

capital fell under its jurisdiction or for that matter the national highway passed through the entire length and breadth of Angami’s land as often heard. APO explained that their main objective of adopting such a resolution was to protect and preserve the sanctity of true and vibrant Naga society from being spoiled and corrupted by few groups of people for self-aggrandisement and also to gain cheap popularity overnight at the cost of innocent public.

bench said in its judgement. The top court delivered the verdict on the appeals filed by four appellants challenging the Allahabad High Court verdict which had sentenced them to life in connection with a case lodged in 2004. The bench said the apex court had already expressed its views on the need for a legislative remedy to curtail the menace of private witnesses turning hostile for obvious reasons. “Notwithstanding the above-stated directions is-

There are many people in this world who never fail to bring joy in our lives. The reason of their greatness is far more mundane yet far more precious and unique. They will forever be remembered in our hearts because of the roles they played and the part they filled in all our individual lives. And we can be certain that no one was a better person, a better son, a better husband, a better father, a better brother than he. And though he now rests beneath the earth, far from all the carnage of the living world, we can now be at peace knowing that we will meet again on the other side. The bereaved family of Late Albert Solo, Rtd IFS (Addl. PCCF Rtd., Chairman SEAC) who went to be with our Lord on the 7th of January 2022, cannot go without mentioning and thanking each and everyone for all the love, kindness and support you have shown us in many ways. It gave us the greatest comfort during our sorrow. We deeply appreciate your thoughtfulness and thank you most sincerely. Loving mom, wife, children and dear ones K Y M C

achievement limited 2 Tripura BJP MLAs quit; likely to join Cong toBJPlipgovernment’s service only: former Mnp CM Ibobi

AG A RTA L A , F E B 7 (IANS): In a major political jolt, two more dissident MLAs of the ruling BJP -- Sudip Roy Barman and Ashis Kumar Saha who are strong critics of Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb for the past more than two years -- on Monday resigned from the Assembly and the party before leaving for Delhi to decide their next course of action. After submitting their resignation letters to Tripura Assembly Speaker Ratan Chakraborty, both Roy Barman, a former Minister, and Saha told the media that they have also sent their resignation letters to the BJP’s state President Manik Saha. “We are going to Delhi today (Monday) and will come back here on Saturday, then we will tell you everything in detail about our future political course,” Roy Barman told the media just after submitting resignation letters to Chakraborty and before leaving for the national capital. He said: “The BJP government led by Deb utterly failed to deliver the goods. An autocratic rule has been prevailing in the state. A reign of terror has been go-

Ashis Kumar Saha and Sudip Roy Barman ing on in the state. People are in serious distress. We want to work for the people as we are unable to do this while remaining in the BJP.” Sources close to Roy Barman and Saha said that they might meet Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other leaders in Delhi and may join the party. Roy Barman and Saha, strong critics of Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and other BJP leaders, were earlier in Congress before joining TMC in 2016 and then to BJP next year (2017). Earlier, BJP MLA Ashish Das after strongly criticising the saffron party and its leadership including Chief Minister, joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on October 31, 2021 following which he was disquali-

fied from Tripura Assembly by the Speaker on January 5 (this year). BJP, on the other hand, downplayed the resignations of Roy Barman and Saha and said that the duo’s quit from the Assembly membership would not be any constitutional crisis in the state. “It was in the expected line that Roy Barman and Saha left from the Assembly membership and the party. They have been openly criticising the chief minister and other party leaders. Their resignation from the Assembly and the party has no importance to BJP,” state BJP spokesman Nabendu Bhattacharjee told the media. Roy Barman and Saha and three other BJP MLAs -- Ashish Das, Diba Chandra Hrangkhawl and Burba

Mohan Tripura -- in August last year held a big gathering in Agartala which was attended by many local BJP leaders and workers. Roy Barman, Saha and few other BJP MLAs and leaders for the past more than two years met BJP’s National President J.P. Nadda and other central leaders and Ministers and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and apprised them about the “misgovernance in Tripura and Chief Minister’s authoritarian style of work”. To curb the rebellion in the party organisation and to set the governance right, several central party leaders led by BJP’s North East Zonal Secretary (Organisation), Ajay Jamwal, had visited the state several times. In the presence of the central party leaders, three BJP MLAs -- Ram Prasad Paul, Sushanta Chowdhury, Bhagaban Chandra Das -were on August 31 last year inducted into the Tripura cabinet in its first cabinet expansion after the BJP-IPFT (Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura) alliance assumed charge in March 2018. The open dissent and internal dispute in the rul-

ing BJP began after Roy Barman, who was holding the Health and Information Technology departments, was sacked in May 2019 following differences with Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb. The BJP came to power in Tripura on March 9, 2018, after defeating the CPI (M)-led Left Front for the first time in 25 years after the latter first came to power in the northeastern state in 1978 along with West Bengal and again in 1993 (after a gap of five years - 1988-1993, when Congress-led coalition government governed the state). M e a n w h i l e, I P F T MLA Brishaketu Debbarma resigned from the Assembly in June 2021 and joined the TIPRA (Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance) headed by Tripura’s royal scion, Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barman. Debbarma’s resignation was, however, not yet accepted by the Assembly speaker. The IPFT with eight MLAS is an ally of the ruling BJP, who secured 36 seats in the 60-member Assembly in the 2018 elections while remaining 16 seats bagged by the CPI-M.

Correspondent IMPHAL, FEB 7: Former Manipur chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh on Monday came down heavily on the N Biren Singh-led BJP’s coalition government, saying that it paid only the lip service to the people. Singh mocked the achievements of the BJPled government, both the Centre and in the state limited to advertisements and billboards. Addressing a party election rally in Thoubal district on Monday, the former three-time chief minister asked what had the BJP-led coalition government done in the last five years. The people of the state expected a lot when the BJP that led the government at the Centre came to power in the state. But, “Except telling lies to the people, this government has done nothing,” he said. Asserting that union ministers including prime minister Narendra Modi visited the state frequently

Okram Ibobi Singh only to tell lies to the people. “The BJP-led government is looting the poor in the name of implementing welfare schemes for them,” he accused. “The poor were not getting the benefits of the welfare schemes. They did not get proper free medical treatmenat under various Centre and state sponsored schemes,” he added. T h e y h ave b e e n cheated in the name of constructing houses under housing schemes. And no house was constructed, the former chief minister alleged. While asserting that the most popular schemes like MGNREGS, NFSA (National Food Security Act) and Right to Educa-

tion were implemented during Congress r ule, Singh boldly declared that BJP has not initiated a scheme comparable to these schemes so far. “Instead of introducing a better scheme, the BJP is taking the credits of these schemes,” he added. He said that none of the projects initiated by the then Congress government in the state was able to be completed by the incumbent BJP-led government. Under the BJP rule, the state was facing a severe financial crunch, he pointed out while alleging that the state government was now unable to clear monthly salaries of its employees regularly. Behind the financial crunch, there was over expenditure by the government in arranging for the visits of the union ministers and advertisements, Singh alleged. He alleged that the visits of union cabinet and state ministers in the state were so frequent that the state government was even unable to discharge its normal service.

leaders tell lies, make people U’khand polls: Modi addresses virtual rally BJP fight each other: Akhilesh Yadav Says upcoming polls fight between creators of state and those who conspired to block it

D E H R A D U N, F E B 7 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the upcoming Assembly election in Uttarakhand is a fight between those who created the state and those who “conspired to block its creation”. Addressing a rally in Haridwar vir tually, he accused the previous Congress governments in Uttarakhand and at the Centre of not allowing development in the state as it was “created against the party’s wishes”. “On one hand, there is BJP which under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee created Uttarakhand and on the other there are people who hatched all sorts of conspiracies to block its creation. “Do you think that those who were against the creation of Uttarakhand will ever bring development here?” Modi asked.

He termed the previous Congress dispensations in the state and at the Centre as “double-brake” governments. Non-implementation of the RishikeshKarnaprayag railway line during the Congress rule is a burning example of their “anti-development approach”, he alleged. “ Wo r k o n t h e Rishikesh-Karnaprayag line was to start a decade ago. They spent only Rs 4 crore on such a big project from 2011 to 2014. But since we came to power at the Centre, nearly Rs 5,500 crore have already been spent on the long-awaited project,” the prime minister said. He alleged the Congress sees Uttarakhand as its ATM and is preparing to make a comeback to power in the state to “loot

its resources”. “It is their mindset.” To push Uttarakhand backwards, the Congress even compromised with national security by neglecting the development of border Modi alleged. He said schemes like ‘Vibrant Village’ and ‘Parvatmala’ introduced in the general Budget will bring development to the border districts of Uttarakhand and its hills. Modi said under the Namami Gange project, the Ganga is being cleansed. “The previous government had declared one of the largest rivers of the world a canal at Har ki Pauri so that the mining mafia can play its game,” he alleged. “Those who never did anything for the development of the hills are coming up with new

Shots were fired at the car of the president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), on February 3, 2022 in

Uttar Pradesh following which two persons were arrested and arms were also recovered. Owaisi had reached Delhi safely after the incident. I have big plans for it. I had announced from the sacred land of Kedarnath that the decade belongs to Uttarakhand. “So friends, don’t waste this opportunity. SAHARANPUR, FEB 7 (PTI): SP chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday launched a scathing attack against the ruling BJP, asking the party to change its name as he alleged that its leaders tell lies, cheat people and pit them against each other. The maximum custodial deaths have taken place in the state, he added. “We have seen how the son of the Union minister of state for home drove a jeep over farmers. The

government wants to shield him. The government wants to crush the Constitution as it has crushed the farmers,” he said apparently referring to the Lakhimpur Kheri violence. Police have arrested U n i o n m i n i s t e r A j ay Mishra’s son Ashish for the death of four farmers, who were mowed down by cars, allegedly being driven by BJP workers. When asked about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s virtual programme in Bijnor, which was changed owing to weather conditions, Yadav in a lighter vein said, “No, no, it was not due to the weather. There would have been some other reason.”

Criminalising marital rape: Delhi HC grants two weeks to Centre

NEW DELHI, FEB 7 (PTI): The Delhi High Court on Monday granted two weeks to the Centre to state its stand on petitions seeking criminalisation of marital rape following Solicitor General Tushar Mehta’s submission that the government is neither in favour nor against striking down the immunity granted to husbands under the Indian Penal Code. Mehta emphasised that a “holistic view” has to be taken on criminalising marital rape which is a sensitive socio-legal issue and a request for deferring further hearing was not unjustifiable. He also clarified that the Centre’s stand on the petitions was reflected in its last affidavit seeking time to undertake a

consultative process for a decision. “It is not the central government’s stand that it should either go or it should retain,” he said. “I am saying neither... The central government’s stand is reflected in the last affidavit which we have filed. Let it not be said that we are in favour of retaining (or) we are deleting it,” he added. A bench headed by Justice Rajiv Shakdher, which is dealing with the petitions seeking to strike down the exception granted to husbands under the Indian rape law, observed that the issue has to be decided either by the court or the legislature, and granted two weeks to the Centre to formulate its stand.

Bihar BJP chief launches fresh attack on Nitish Kumar PATNA, FEB 7 (PTI): The Nitish Kumar government in Bihar came under fresh attack on Monday from state BJP president Sanjay Jaiswal whose party seems annoyed with junior ally JD(U)’s shrill demands for special assistance from the Centre. Jaiswal, who is also the Lok Sabha member from Pashchim Champaran, came out with a lengthy Facebook post asserting that Bihar was already getting more central help than states like Maharashtra and West Bengal, which were almost of the same demographic s i z e. H e p o i n t e d o u t deficiencies of the state like sub-optimal resource utilisation, hostile attitude towards entrepreneurship and reluctance to pursue

an aggressive policy of population control. Although Jaiswal took no name in his post, he left little doubt about the target of his attack. The former BJP chief whip attached a screenshot of questions raised in Lok Sabha last week by Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan, the JD(U)’s national president, and K a u s h a l e n d r a Ku m a r who is the party MP from Nalanda, the home turf of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

The JD(U) MPs had sought to know whether the Narendra Modi government would consider “special category status”, on the lines of Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and states of the North East, for Bihar and other states identified as economically and industrially backward by NITI Aayog recently. The demand for special status has been a political plank of sorts for Nitish Kumar ever since he came

to power in 2005. His contention has been that Bihar was adversely hit by the creation of Jharkhand whereby the parent state, ravaged by droughts and f loods, stood de prived of mineral reserves and industrial units. A resolution in support of the demand was passed unanimously by the assembly in 2006 though parties have been aligning their stance to the equation shared with governments at the Centre. The screenshot shared by Jaiswal also contained the categorical reply of Union minister Rao Inderjit Singh who said there was no plan to grant special status to Bihar or any other state and also explained the reasons for the same. The state BJP

chief, whose running feud with the JD(U) on issues ranging from prohibition in Bihar to alleged denigration of Emperor Asoka keep making headlines, decided to twist the knife. Pulling no punches, he praised the efforts being made by industries minister S h a h n aw a z H u s s a i n , his party colleague, but underscored the need for “cooperation of the entire council of ministers”. Lauding the success of PPP model in Gujarat, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi had ruled as CM for over a decade, the BJP leader said, “Bihar gets done in because of a mindset that treats as a villain anybody who wishes to set up a new business.”

Keeping our guard up

t is presently evident, that the covid wave in India is plateauing and could well be declining and hopeful ending the pandemic. This had been acknowledged by epidemiologists across India and notably WHO’s director of South- East Asia Poonam Khetrapal Singh on February 5. However the WHO official has cautioned against complacency and said that the country must now focus on reducing the spread of the virus, implement “situation-specific” public health measures and increase the vaccination against the pandemic. Singh also pointed out that the way forward was also to implement situation-specific public health and social measures and increasing vaccine coverage. Both Omicron & Delta variants causing surge in Covid-19 cases was the reason for more cases during the second wave. The third wave happened before it was completely over. After Omicron was identified as the new variant and when covid cases began rising, many generally believed that the surge was due to new variant. Fortunately, even though the Omicron variant spread like wildfire, it was not very deadly as compared to the Delta variant. As most adults were already vaccinated with both the doses, the rate of hospitalization and mortality is quite low in comparison with the second wave. However, a closer scrutiny revealed that fresh covid cases were due to both Delta and Omicron. These two were present in the same environment and were contributing to the surge in Covid cases. Covid cases across India have begun to decline to less than one lakh from the nearly three lakh figure last month. However Dr Sanjeev Kumar, nodal officer of Covid-19 at the AIIMS-Patna, warned that the fourth wave may hit parts of India soon as the number of new cases are declining mainly because people are gradually becoming careless, often ignoring the Covid-19 guidelines. On the other hand, Dr Satish Kumar of Nalanda Medical College Hospital (NMCH) said the positive cases have started declining after January 15 and the pandemic is expected to end within a month. He also warned about the possibility of a fourth wave. To add to concerns, a new and more dangerous variant, NeoCov, has recently been reported, with the expected mortality of one in every three infected people. According to researchers from Wuhan University, Wuhan, China in a report that is yet to be peer-reviewed, a single molecular change in the lab enabled a coronavirus called Neocov to “efficiently infect” human cells using the same pathway that the SARS-CoV-2 uses to infect human cells. It may be reminded that after the second wave began to almost disappear, people by and large, let down their guard and understandably so because they were covid fatigue through two years under the pandemic. With onset of severe cold, many have been advised not to take covid tests if they had any symptoms such as cold, cough or runny nose. These symptoms were indicative of omicron infections and probably it was one factor that had kept people away from being tested and let to suppressing covid figures. There are also many who have got covid for the second time despite having completed the mandatory two covid vaccinations. With government relaxing covid norms and public becoming more careless, the prediction of a fourth wave needs to be taken very seriously.

DailyDevotion Spiritual Dejection We were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. —Luke 24:21 Every fact that the disciples stated was right, but the conclusions they drew from those facts were wrong. Anything that has even a hint of dejection spiritually is always wrong. If I am depressed or burdened, I am to blame, not God or anyone else. Dejection stems from one of two sources— I have either satisfied a lust or I have not had it satisfied. In either case, dejection is the result. Lust means “I must have it at once.” Spiritual lust causes me to demand an answer from God, instead of seeking God Himself who gives the answer. What have I been hoping or trusting God would do? Is today “the third day” and He has still not done what I expected? Am I therefore justified in being dejected and in blaming God? Whenever we insist that God should give us an answer to prayer we are off track. The purpose of prayer is that we get ahold of God, not of the answer. It is impossible to be well physically and to be dejected, because dejection is a sign of sickness. This is also true spiritually. Dejection spiritually is wrong, and we are always to blame for it. We look for visions from heaven and for earthshaking events to see God’s power. Even the fact that we are dejected is proof that we do this. Yet we never realize that all the time God is at work in our everyday events and in the people around us. If we will only obey, and do the task that He has placed closest to us, we will see Him. One of the most amazing revelations of God comes to us when we learn that it is in the everyday things of life that we realize the magnificent deity of Jesus Christ.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2022

UP: Ascending SP alters 2024 course or Yogi bangs record!

T

he way UP is flaring up before the first phase of elections, it may alter the course of 2024 national politics but the BJP has strength to fight back. UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s statement, “after March 10, garmi utar dunga, May, June me Shimla bana dunga – cool you down after March 10” has changed the poll tack. Rashtriya Lok Dal Leader Jayant Chadhury’s retort “people overwhelmingly stamping the handpump (RLD symbol) swamp the ballot box and shear the extra fat of BJP -charbi utar degi”, has warmed up the west UP poll. It has ignited debate on governance now and during the SP rule. Acerbic expressions by both the camps ignite passion whether in Aligarh, Meerut, western UP, Allahabad or Gorakhpur in the east. A poll observer Harjinder says that strangely the ruling BJP workers are lying low. “May be they were ignored by their government during the pandemic and today they are keeping off or might be it’s a new strategy”, says another west UP journalist Sanjeev. The BJP holds the maximum seats in the west, says

Dr Ravi Yadav but may now be in trouble. Eastern UP may be tougher as apart from OBCs even Brahmin strong groups are sliding away from BJP. Yes, Yogi’s statement was in reply to Kairana RLD candidate Nahid Hasan that “people are warming up in Kairana and Muzaffarnagar – areas known for riots around 2013”. Yogi said that he would turn these areas into cold Shimla even in the heat of May and June. It is being seen as retribution if Yogi returns as CM, in the Jatland, as western UP is called. It has changed the otherwise normal poll campaign to an affront on Jat pride. It is to be seen how the voters react. The mood seemingly is impacting many areas in eastern UP, which has the highest number of migrant workers ill- treated during first phase of lockdown. The region with high poverty feels the pinch of rising prices . They were hit hard during demonetisation. Stray cattle are bigger issue, both in the west and east as they devastate the farms. The BJP after coming to power its numbers swelled for its ‘gomata’ –cow is our mother – approach. Linguis-

tic minorities like Bengalis and Punjabis are with BJP. Congress leaders Priyanka Vadra and Rahul Gandhi effort to activate the party and possible tacit tie-up with SP can make some difference to its numbers. BSP has committed jatav votes but other dalits may split to other parties. The Hathras gang-rape and official violence incident may realign valmikis who voted BJP. So may UnShivaji nao incident in central UP. Since 1985, UP has not reelected an incumbent government. If Yogi does he would establish a record. The BJP is not leaving it to chance. Even during 2017 poll, the state did not see so many top BJP leaders campaigning. Home Minister Amit Shah is continuously visiting and said to be the mastermind. Shah’s statement that if Saharanpur and Muzaffarnagar do not go his way ‘mushkil ho jayega’ is being treated as provocative. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed over 11 large rallies till the beginning of poll process attacking communal “samajwadis” keep SP in reckoning. Deputy chief minister

Keshav Prasad Maurya contesting from Sirathu near Allahabad faces hostile crowds as many ministers like Shrikant Sharma, Suresh Rana, Sangeet Some in the west. Sharma is being jeered all over in Mathura. Former central minister Mahesh Sharma was shooed away from his home village in Bulandhshahr for not visiting the area. In all these incidents, the BJP workers remained siSarkar lent spectators. The SPRLD has interestingly pitted Pallavi Patel, a good orator and sister of central minister Anupriya Patel of Apna Dal against Maurya cornering him in the constituency. Would it change the voting pattern that was overwhelmingly for BJP in 2017? Not easy to say. The state government’s reported dictat to government employees to coerce postal ballot voters has reportedly caused consternation as SP-RLD fight back and the poll staff now distance themselves. The BJP is surprised the way SP leader Akhilesh Yadav has done his social engineering. This has led the SP penetrate hitherto impregnable areas like Agra and Mathura and many seats

in the east. The diligent home work of Akhilesh helps SP having wider alliance with caste groups beyond the Yadavs and his family. Similarly, Jayant Chaudhury has spread his wings and is emerging as more than Jat leader post year-long Kisan agitation. The kisan, gujar, pal, baghel, prjapati and similar other smaller caste groups move to SP-RLD. There is also a conflict between ‘me’ doing in BJP and the ‘samajwadis’ in Akhilesh’s narrative. The SP-RLD accuses the BJP of grabbing credit for programmes of SP and other party governments. Even Yogi himself is said to be roughing it up in Gorakhpur as his disciple Sunil Singh on SP ticket faces him and allegedly erstwhile area strongman, Hari Shankar Tiwari’s family opposes. But there is a different aspect to. The minority votes lining up for the SP-RLD fuel passion for the BJP’s Hindutva, Ayodhya, Vindhyavasini temples and now Krishna temple in Mathura. An Aligarh professor Sajjad says that overtly the minorities, Jats and farmer groups appear to be together. But they may not be as cohesive

as they appear. The voting may not reflect the overt mood. RSS leader Indresh Kumar has activated his Rashtriya Muslim Manch to woo the Christians and Muslim minorities groups in Lucknow, Amroha, Moradabad and now even in Goa, Uttarakhand and Manipur to help BJP. Kumar has had separate meetings with Muslim women and his media coordinator Shahid Sayeed says the women benefited by triple talaq annulment are with BJP. Many also have PM Awas houses. The BJP has apparently now changed tack and is reaching each community at their bastions. Congress leader RPN Singh’s entry to BJP has made its defector Swami Prasad Maurya to move from his stronghold Padrauna to another seat, Fazilganj. The BJP in its run up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections should not be taken lightly. It has organizational and official strength to bounce back. Its leaders say that even with lesser seats than 325 now it would have enough to be in power. A prediction is not easy but the contest is tough. March 10 will open up the cards and set the course to 2024.

Post-mortem

Material wealth and economic apartheid are not positive economics

M

ammon, the biblical term for riches, is often used to describe the debasing influence of material wealth. Most economists look at what has happened and what is currently happening in a given economy to form the basis of their predictions, also known as the investigative process of Positive Economics. The fact that mammon worship and Positive Economics are poles apart will be evident even to a dimwit. But one cannot count economic wizard Jaithirth Rao among them, who equated both in a recent column and ridiculed those who adhere to the correct definition of Positive Economics. He picked international NGO Oxfam as his target in the column, asking it to “stop looking for inequality in India and go back to distributing blankets”. Let us look at the reasons for this wrath. A widespread perception exists that in the last eight years, the Narendra Modiled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre has only managed to make India, arguably, the most inequitable country in the world. In an unprecedented trend, the annual income of the poorest 20 per cent of Indian households plunged 53 per cent in 2020-21 from their levels in 2015-16. In the same period, the richest 20 per cent saw their annual household income grow 39 per cent. This is revealed in the latest round of the ICE-360 Survey 2021, conducted by People’s Research on India’s Consumer Economy (PRICE) between April and October 2021, covering about 2,50,000 households spread over 120 towns and 800 villages across 100 districts. Splitting the population across five categories based on income, the survey shows that while the poorest 20 per cent (first quintile) witnessed the biggest erosion of 53 per cent, the second lowest quintile (lower middle category), too, witnessed a decline in their household income of 32 per cent in the same period. While the quantum of erosion reduced to 9 per cent for those in the middle-income category, the top two quintiles—upper middle (20 per cent) and richest (20 per cent)— saw their household income rise by 7 per cent and 39 per cent, respectively. To understand the enormity of the situation, let us look at the distressed state of the nation and the economy during the Covid-19 pandemic as revealed by Oxfam’s ‘Inequality Kills: India Supplement 2022′ report. Poverty: About 230 million more Indians have fallen below the national minimum wage poverty line. India is back to being a ‘country of mass poverty’ after 45 years. Moreover, 63 million Indians are pushed into poverty because of healthcare costs every year — almost two people every second. Hunger: Approximately 14 per cent of India’s population — about 189 million people — are

undernourished and 51.4 per cent of women between the ages 15 to 49 are anaemic. Furthermore, 34.7 per cent of children under the age of five are stunted and 20 per cent suffer from wasting. Unemployment and household income loss: Unemployment in rural areas is at 14.34 per cent while in urban areas it is 14.71 per cent. The pandemic and the subsequent lockdown caused a 47 per cent decline in the average seasonally adjusted per capita real household income (42 per cent in rural and 53% in urban areas). MSME: Around 80 per cent of small and medium enterprises across India are “insecure” about their future. A survey of 81,000 self-employed and micro or small businesses found 78 per cent of them incurred losses. Health: The country also suffers from poor health infrastructure and access to health facilities (rural 95.0 per cent; urban 75.0 per cent) and medicines (rural 36.9 per cent; urban 10.9 per cent). Education: A total of 320 million learners from 1.5 million schools adversely affected and transitioned to e-learning. Only 15 per cent rural households have internet access while the number stands at 42 per cent in urban areas. Only 13 per cent individuals in rural areas—8.5 per cent of them females—can use the internet. It’s a disaster facing future India. Informal sector: In the informal economy, where 92 per cent people are employed, about 400 million workers are at risk of falling deeper into poverty. It would take 941 years “for a minimum wage worker in rural India to earn what the top paid executive at a leading Indian garment company earns in a year”, according to the Oxfam report. Rich getting richer during pandemic Meanwhile, to add insult to injury, wealth and luxurious living of the super-rich have boomed in the same period. In its ‘Inequality Kills: India Supplement 2022’ briefing, Oxfam reveals that 84 per cent of households in the country suffered a decline in their income in a year marked by tremendous loss of life and livelihoods, while the number of Indian billionaires went up significantly. “In India, during the pandemic (since March 2020, through to November 30th, 2021) the wealth of billionaires increased from INR 23.14 lakh crore (USD 313 billion) to INR 53.16 lakh crore (USD 719 billion),” the report said. The Oxfam briefing categorically held that the stark wealth inequality in India is a result of an economic system and violent economic policies rigged in favour of the super-rich over the poor and marginalised. It also pointed out that the number of billionaires in India has increased from 9 in 2000 to 142 in 2021. Their total wealth is higher than the entire Union Budget of India. On average, India is producing 70 new millionaires

every day. Such predatory rigging has led to healthcare becoming a luxury good in India as the government spending on public healthcare ranks among the lowest in the world. Instead of a well-funded health service, it has promoted an increasingly powerful commercial health sector. While the country is a top destination for medical tourism, the poorest Indian states have infant mortality rates higher than those in sub-Saharan Africa. India accounts for 17 per cent of global maternal deaths and 21 per cent of deaths among children below five years. Oxfam has urged governments across the world to take action to redress the growing divide between rich and poor. In the Indian context, just 1 per cent wealth tax on 98 of the richest billionaire families in India can finance Ayushman Bharat, the national public health insurance fund of the Government of India for more than seven years. The briefing also advocates a 1 per cent surcharge on the richest 10 per cent of the Indian population to fund inequality combating measures such as higher investments in school education, universal healthcare and social security benefits like maternity leaves, paid leaves and pension for all Indians. This is Positive Economics at its best — analysing the present circumstances in an economy to form predictions and suggestions for the future. This is what has raised the hackles of mammon worshippers like Rao. His column consists of mostly meaningless ramblings and he rubs it in when he said, “Frankly, I don’t care if my friends Bezos-Ambani-Adani-Zuckerberg see their wealth increase from 100 billion to 150 billion. JudeoChristian teachings as well as the precepts of Sanatana Dharma tell me that I should not envy those who have been blessed by providence with greater wealth.” Here is another masterpiece, “Our problem has nothing to do with inequalities. Our problem is the low level of total wealth. We have to pursue artha, as our ancients have advised us and the whole country has to get richer. Targeting the few rich people will not only not help the poor, it will actually hurt all of us, including the poor.” Does this ex-London honcho even have basic knowledge about the fundamentals of real India? Covid and its fallouts When the Covid pandemic broke out, India was already experiencing the ‘longest economic slowdown since 1991’ with weak employment generation, uneven development and depressed informal economy, which were primarily triggered by the devastating demonetisation announced by Prime Minister Modi on 8 November 2016. And on 24 March 2020, Modi imposed the draconian nationwide lockdown with just four hours’ notice — virtually collapsing the economy. We have already

seen the face of the depressed and distressed economy. In reality, the total number of Indians wallowing in poverty, hunger, unemployment, malnourishment, illiteracy and poor health exceeds the population of the rich countries of Europe and the USA put together. As opposed to this, there has been a phenomenal wealth accumulation taking place in India for a few select oligarchs. A recent report in The Economist noted that the net worth of Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani had gone up by 350 per cent and 750 per cent, respectively, between 2016 and 2020. In 20202021, Mukesh Ambani’s daily wealth creation increased by Rs 163 crore and his net worth is Rs 7,18,000 crore. Meanwhile, Gautam Adani’s net worth increased by Rs 1,002 crore daily at a staggering 261 per cent and has reached Rs 5,05,900 crore. Rao also heralds the “Global Championship” model of Japan and South Korea in his column. Is he ignorant that India is not a corporate state but a welfare state? India is governed by the Constitution, and the Directive Principles of State Policy (Part IV) mandates the State to promote the welfare of the people by securing and protecting as effectively as it may a social order in which justice, social, economic and political, shall inform all the institutions of the national life [Article 38(1)]. Further articles also direct the State to minimise inequalities, ensure equitable distribution of resources and avoid concentration of wealth. In December 2020, CEO of Niti Ayog Amitabh Kant also turned these constitutional provisions upside down when he openly proclaimed the Modi government’s policies to transform India from a

democratic republic into an autocratic oligarchy. “In India we are too much of a democracy so we keep supporting everybody… For the first time in India a government has thought big in terms of size and scale and said we want to produce global champions,” said Kant. And this is precisely what the central government, its ministers and minions are doing in the last few months with a feverish pitch to sell or alienate public sector enterprises and assets to moneybags by issuing draconian directions and guidelines, threatening CMDs with summary removal and bullying the regulatory authorities to rush through clearances. These dastardly policies of fattening the super-rich have resulted in a sharp fall in employment. For India’s employment-to-population ratio to be at the global average, nearly 600 million people need to be at work. Currently, only a little more than 400 million are at work which is a massive shortfall of 200 million. This, combined with India fast becoming the most inequitable country in the world, is turning the country into an apartheid nation. Perhaps this is what ‘mammon worshippers’ like Jaithirth Rao want. No wonder they do not appreciate NGOs like Oxfam being spoilsports by speaking truth to power. Ironically, it is these ‘mammon worshippers’ whom the government has listened to by not taxing the super-rich and facilitating their further enrichment by promoting private investment while hastily selling public assets. Sir,

AFSPA is not logical

The army is trained to kill and win, thereby they adopted a killer instinct. Giving administrative power to army is like entrusting a Tiger to guard a herd of sheep. Oting massacre was one example out of the many such incidents in Nagaland. Before Nagaland become a state in India, the British have ruled the erstwhile Naga Hills District of Assam for some 58 years, during such short rule they (British) precepted Naga mentality and made historic remark on the Nagas: Nagas could never be won by force but by kindness and development. AFSPA pushed many youngsters to the undergrounds out of fear or to avenge their dear ones victimised by the army. Every Naga name is so dear to the family, it represents social, economic, administrative status of the family or forefathers. In the headhunting time whenever enemy takes away the head of a person his or her name abandoned forever unless the enemy is avenged. It is not imaginable that the undergrounds who have no dirt of finances would work in coal mine. Secondly the DC Mon and the police team have found no ammunitions in the vehicle in which coal miners were travelling on that particular day, then why judgement is delayed so long? Is there any different court rules against the minority? It is high time to seriously consider the positive and negative impact of the AFSPA. At the same the general public should bring about a peaceful situation in which AFSPA will not be necessary for all time to come L. Akang Jamir, A Senior citizen, MKG Town

He ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ is the perfect time to think about how India can play a global leadership role in the coming years. Parl adjourned for 1 hour in memory of Lata Mangeshkar NEW DELHI/BHOPAL, FEB 7 (PTI): Both Houses of Parliament on Monday adjourned proceedings for one hour in memory of Lata Mangeshkar while the Madhya Pradesh government announced that a music academy and a museum showcasing all songs of the iconic singer will be set up at her birthplace in Indore. A s M a n g e s h k a r ’s nephew Adinath collected her ashes from Shivaji Park in Mumbai where she was cremated with full state honours on Sunday, Maharashtra BJP MLA Ram Kadam and state Congress president Nana Patole urged the state government that a memorial be built at the cremation site. There is no word yet from the Mangeshkar family on where the ashes will be immersed. Reacting to the demand, the Shiv Sena, which is heading the ruling coali-

tion with the Congress and the NCP in Maharashtra, said there should be no politics over the issue. The demand assumes significance as the sprawling park in Dadar is also the site where Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray was cremated in 2012 and his memorial built there despite opposition from civic groups. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid rich tributes to Mangeshkar at the start of his reply to the debate on the President’s address to the joint sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, saying her contribution strengthened the unity of the country. “Her voice mesmerised and inspired the country for such a long time,” Modi said, adding that it filled the country with emotions. The prime minister said her contribution has strengthened the cultural heritage and unity of the

CBI arrests bank manager for demanding bribe VISAKHAPATNAM, FEB 7 (IANS): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested a Branch Manager of Equitas Small Finance Bank, Dwarakanagar Branch, Visakhapatnam for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 1.30 lakh from a man. Ahead of the High Court hearing on the row, Bommai appealed to everyone to maintain peace and said his government would take steps after the court order. He asked institutions to follow mandatory uniform rules issued by the government until the court order is out. Speaking to reporters after landing in New Delhi, the national capital, he said, “The matter is before the High Court and it will be decided there. Therefore, I appeal to everyone to maintain peace and no one should take steps to disturb peace.” “All should follow the State’s order (on uniform) until the court decides,” he said. The court would hear the petitions of five girls questioning the restriction on wearing hijab.

ram is also being looked into in this case. The accused Branch Manager was identified as Akella Srinivas Arudra. A senior CBI official said the victim had been running a shop in Vizianagaram. He approached Equitas Small Finance Bank for a business loan of Rs 20 lakh. The official said that the Branch Manager called the complainant and

demanded payment of 10 per cent of the loan amount (Rs 2 lakh) as bribe. The accused Branch Manager further informed the complainant that the loan had been sanctioned and allegedly reiterated the demand of bribe for facilitating disbursement of the loan amount. After negotiation, the accused allegedly reduced the demand to Rs 1.30 lakh.

Recalling her performance at the Central hall of Parliament to mark the Golden Jubilee of Independence in 1997, Birla said her song -- ‘Saare Jahan se Acha Hindustan Hamara ‘ -is ‘engraved’ in our memory forever. “Her demise has caused irreparable loss to music, art and culture.”

PANAJI, FEB 7 (PTI): Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday said if her party comes to power in Goa after the upcoming elections, Rs 500 crore from the government fund would be allocated for employment generation and there would be 30 per cent reservation for women in government jobs. Addressing a public meeting in Nuvem Assembly constituency of Goa ahead of the state polls scheduled on February 14, Gandhi also said that a staff selection commission would be formed to get rid of “scams” in government jobs allocation. Referring to the Congress’ manifesto released on Sunday for the Goa polls, Gandhi assured 30 per cent reservation for women in the state government jobs. She also said Rs 500 crore from the government fund would be allocated for the creation of jobs. Under the Nyay scheme, families from weaker sections will be given Rs 6,000 per month which will help them sustain and also inject money into the economy, she said. The Congress has assured to build hostels for working women in Margao and Panaji and increase the number of police stations supervised by women. The party has also announced that the prices of petrol and diesel would not be allowed to rise above Rs 80 per litre, and the party government will subsidise the remaining amount. Notably, the Congress had emerged as the single largest party in the 40-member Goa Assembly after the 2017 state polls, but the BJP then forged an alliance with some regional outfits and independents to form government. Referring to the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, Priyanka Gandhi reiterated that the Congress would give 40 per cent of its tickets to women in UP.

TMC, AAP are parties of defectors: Chidambaram

A week before Goa goes to polls and multicornered contests shaping up, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Monday termed the Trinamool Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as the parties of defectors. He also said that both these parties lacked a winning potential but they are dividing nonBJP votes. Addressing a public meeting at the Nuvem assembly constituency, he said that voters should not waste their votes by supporting the AAP or the TMC rather they should choose the NOTA (None of The Above) option. “These parties have suddenly descended on in Goa. They have no roots. Is there any grassroots worker that has risen from the ranks of the AAP and TMC?” he questioned. Later, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also attended the public meeting in Nuvem in south Goa. “Both AAP and TMC are parties of defectors. They have allowed the entry of defectors from other parties and fielded them as candidates,” he said. The TMC and the AAP cannot win a sufficient number of seats to form a government in Goa, he said. “What are they doing

here? The plain and blunt truth is that they are dividing non-BJP votes. They are cutting into non-BJP votes,” he added. The TMC, led by Mamata Banerjee, had earlier proposed an alliance of Congress and other parties to take on the ruling BJP in Goa polls. Last month, Chidambaram had said that the TMC’s proposal for alliance in Goa was not considered as it poached Congress leaders. Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP has also been trying to make inroads in Goa. Chidambaram on Monday also took a swipe at the TMC which had announced that a Rs 20 lakh loan will be provided sans collateral at a four per cent interest rate if it comes to power in Goa. “I challenge any TMC leader to show me one banker who will land you money without collateral and at four per cent interest amount,” the former Union finance minister, who is handling Congress’ election affairs in Goa, said. He also questioned the AAP’s promise to give a Rs 3,000 monthly allowance for unemployed youth in Goa. “Why the Arvind Kejriwal-led party is not extending the same benefits to people in Delhi?” he asked.

BENGALURU, FEB 7 (PTI): The ‘hijab’ (scarf) row in Karnataka intensified on Monday with some students seeking to defy the government order mandating uniform style of clothes as Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai issued an appeal to maintain peace. At a college at Kundapur in Udupi district of the State, the principal talked to girl students wearing hijabs and explained the government order to them. But the students insisted on wearing the headscarves, and were asked to go to a separate room arranged for them. Education Minister BC Nagesh said students who insist on hijab-wearing will not be allowed into the government educational institutions. Then, he asked some students protesting on the street outside the college to sit in a separate room but they were not imparted lessons. “Protesting on the road is a nuisance. three years of conviction,” he added. He is likely to be taken to Gurugram under heavy security. Reacting to his furlough, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the body responsible for the management of gurdwaras, asked the Haryana government to refrain from releasing a criminal responsible for several killings from the jail. Earlier, Ram Rahim was granted parole on his wife Harjit Kaur’s plea that his mother Naseeb Kaur, 85, suffering from a heart disease was seriously ill. Ram Rahim (52) is currently lodged at the high-security Sunaria jail in Rohtak, 250 kms from state capital Chandigarh. In June 2019, Ram Ra-

him Singh had withdrawn his parole plea after the state BJP government was cornered by opposition parties for favouring the self-styled godman, who sought parole for 42 days to tend to his agricultural fields at his sect’s headquarters in Sirsa town. Also, the high court had rejected his parole plea for attending the wedding ceremony of his foster daughter. Ram Rahim was sentenced to 20 years in jail in August 2017 for raping two women. A special CBI court in Panchkula this January 2019 also sentenced Ram Rahim and three others to life imprisonment for the murder of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati over 16 years ago. His conviction on August 25, 2017, had led to violence in Panchkula and Sirsa, leaving 41 people dead and over 260 injured. Ram Rahim was patronised by political leaders and parties in Punjab and Haryana for nearly two decades due to his ability to influence the votes of his followers.

CHANDIGARH, FEB 7 (IANS): Just ahead of the Punjab polls, self-styled jailed godman and Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who is undergoing a 20-year sentence for raping his two disciples, was granted furlough for 21 days on Monday by the BJP-led Haryana government to meet his family members in Gurugram. He is lodged in Haryana’s Sunaria jail since 2017 after being convicted in rape and murder cases. He has a large number of followers in Punjab, which is going to the polls on February 20. Earlier, he was released from the jail thrice for various reasons, including his plea to meet the ailing mother. Justifying the decision, Haryana Jail Minister Ranjit Chautala told reporters, “Ram Rahim was granted parole as per the jail manual. The state government has nothing to do with granting parole or furlough to a jail inmate.” “It is the legal right of a convict, who becomes eligible to seek parole or furlough after he has completed

Under NEP, he said basic arts, humanities, sports and languages, etc, would be based on “our” culture and values, which would help students for tomorrow’s world while also equipping them with the best of “our own” tradition. He urged St Joseph University to gear up to face emerging challenges by updating knowledge base and also to strive hard to contribute the best to the society. NEW DELHI, FEB 7 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court Monday dismissed as withdrawn a plea by the Centre seeking to recall the top court’s certain directions related to registration of CBI probe into the government decision for 26 per cent stake sale in Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL) in 2002. The top court on November 18, 2021 had directed the CBI to register a regular case and proceed in accordance with law after noting that there is sufficient material in relation to the 26 per cent disinvestment of HZL by the Union government. A bench comprising Justices D Y Chandrachud and Surya Kant took note of the submission of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that he sought to withdraw the plea to pursue other remedies in law, including a review. The matter was then dismissed as withdrawn.

UK rebukes China for supporting Argentina’s Falklands claim

President Xi Jinping (R) and Argentina’s President Alberto Fernandez at the Great Hall of the People.

Argentina believes the Falklands were illegally taken from it in 1833 and invaded the British colony in 1982. The United Kingdom sent troops and Argentina lost the two-month war for the South Atlantic archipelago in a conflict that claimed the lives of 649 Argentines and 255 British soldiers. Argentina still claims the islands. London says the Falklands are a selfgoverning entity under its protection. Across Asia, spike in virus cases follows Lunar New Year SINGAPORE, FEB 7 (AP): Many Asian countries are facing a spike in COVID-19 infections after the widely-celebrated Lunar New Year holidays, as health officials grapple with the highly-transmissible omicron variant and expectations that numbers will continue to rise in coming weeks. The Lunar New Year, which is China’s biggest holiday, was celebrated across Asia on Feb. 1 even as pandemic restrictions in many countries kept crowds and family outings to a minimum. Hong Kong’s authorities are confronting record cases that are straining its so-called “zero-COVID” policy. The city has reported more than 300 local infections two days in a row, the highest since the pandemic began. Authorities require all cases to be hospitalised. Hong Kong has aligned itself with China’s “zero-COVID” policy that aims to totally stamp out outbreaks, even as many other countries change their approach to living with the virus. dential buildings wherever clusters of infections are identified, and have banned public dining after 6 p.m. In Singapore, a dramatic rise in coronavirus infections followed last week’s holiday, with cases tripling to 13,000 on Friday. Daily infections have since dipped to 7,752 on Sunday, amid restrictions that include limiting diningin at restaurants to groups of five and capping the number of unique visitors to each household. Singapore has reported over 100,000 cases spanning the last month, although over 99% of the cases are mild or asymptomatic. Across Asia, authorities are confronting a similar pattern as the more easily transmissible omicron becomes dominant in many countries. Experts say omicron also more readily infects those who have been vaccinated or previously infected with COVID-19. Early studies also show omicron is less likely to cause severe illness than the previous delta variant, and vaccine shots can offer strong protection from serious illness.

Canada police get tough as trucker protests continue

BERLIN, FEB 7 (AP): Talks to revive Iran’s tattered 2015 nuclear deal with world powers are resuming on Tuesday after breaking off for a bit over a week for diplomats to return home for consultations. The European Union, which chairs the talks in Vienna, announced the resumption on Monday. The United States pulled out of the Vienna accord in 2018 under then President Donald Trump and reimposed heavy sanctions on Iran. Tehran has responded by increasing the purity and amounts of uranium it enriches and stockpiles, in breach of the accord. U.S. President Joe Biden has signalled that he wants to rejoin the deal. Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China are still parties to the accord with Iran and have been trying to salvage it. Diplomats from the three European countries said when talks paused after a month on Jan. 28 that the negotiations were reaching the final stage, and that required political decisions.

Calcalist said police used the powerful Pegasus software developed by the Israeli firm NSO Group, which is mired in controversy after its spyware was linked to eavesdropping on journalists, activists and politicians in several countries. The newspaper said police used the spyware to gather intelligence before any investigation had been opened — and without judicial warrants. It’s not clear

whether Netanyahu’s inner circle was targeted in connection with his ongoing corruption trial or for other reasons. A spokesman for the Netanyahu family did not respond to a request for comment. Bennett, who replaced Netanyahu as prime minister last June, said Pegasus and other products “are important tools in the fight against terrorism and severe crime, but they were not intended to be used in phishing campaigns targeting the Israeli public or officials — which is why we need to understand exactly what happened,” he said in a statement.

OTTAWA, FEB 7 (AGENCIES): As the protest against the Canadian government’s health measures and vaccine mandates entered an eleventh day on Monday, police have threatened to clamp down after facing criticism for lack of action that has crippled the national capital. The “Freedom Convoy” consisting largely of truckers began as a movement against a Canadian vaccine requirement for cross-border drivers. But it has since evolved into a rallying point against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s strict measures to fight the pandemic. Downtown Ottawa, home to Canada’s parliament, central bank, and buildings including Trudeau’s office, has been largely in lockdown after truckers occupied the streets. Late night honking and occasional fireworks have disrupted the normally quiet life of the residents in the city. A hearing into a proposed class-action lawsuit seeking an injunction to silence the constant honking by truckers will take place on Monday. On Sunday night, police began remov-

BEIJING, FEB 7 (AGENCIES): Britain on Monday firmly rejected a statement from China that affirmed Beijing’s support for Argentina’s claim to the Falkland Islands, as relations between London and Asia’s leading power remain strained. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said in a tweet that the United Kingdom “completely” rejected “any questions over sovereignty of the Falklands.” “The Falklands are part of the British family and we will defend their right to self determination. China must respect the Falklands’ sovereignty,” she wrote. Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Argentine counterpart Alberto Fernandez issued a joint statement on Sunday that said China “reaffirms its support for Argentina’s demand for the full exercise of sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands,” using the Argentine name for the territory. The two leaders met as Fernandez was in Beijing for the Winter Olympics.

Calcalist has published a series of recent reports alleging that police used sophisticated spyware against protesters and other Israeli citizens, prompting condemnation from across the political spectrum. The police commissioner has joined those calling for an independent investigation. Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said the allegations, if true, are “very serious.” In recent days, Israeli media have reported that spyware was used against a key witness in Netanyahu’s corruption trial. Calcalist says it was also used against a phone registered to his son, Avner, as well as two communications advisors and the wife of another defendant in the case. Archaeologists find 40 beheaded Roman skeletons at construction site O

Asha shares an emotional note for Lata Mangeshkar

bout 40 beheaded skeletons were among 425 bodies found in a late Roman cemetery uncovered by archaeologists in southern England. The team of around 50 archaeologists made the discovery during an excavation at Fleet Marston, near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, on the route of the multi-billion pound high-speed rail link that is currently under construction, HS2 said. Around 10% of the bodies were decapitated. Many had their heads placed between their legs or next to their feet. Archaeologists said that one interpretation could be that the decapitated skeletons were criminals or outcasts, although decapitation was a “normal, albeit marginal, burial rite” during the late Roman

period. Over the next few years, the researchers will study the exhumed skeletons, offering an opportunity to learn more about Roman civilization’s historic lifestyles, diet, and beliefs. “All human remains uncovered will be treated with dignity, care, and respect and our discov-

eries will be shared with the community,” Helen Wass, head of heritage at HS2 Ltd said. The team also uncovered over 1,200 coins at the site, along with several lead weights indicating that this was an area of trade and commerce. Domestic objects including spoons, pins, and brooches were

New study shows we have breached Earth’s threshold for chemical pollution

N

ew human-made chemicals and synthetic pollutants constantly enter production across the world even as many thousands of these chemicals are already circulating throughout the planet. There’s so many, in fact, that we have crossed a critical threshold that heightens the risk of destabilizing the entire planet’s operating system and posing a clear threat to humanity, scientists say. There are about 350,000 different types of artificial chemicals currently in the global market, from plastics to pesticides to industrial chemicals like flame retardants and insulators. While research has shown that many of these chemicals can have deleterious impacts on the natural world and human health, most substances have not been evaluated, with their interactions and impacts not yet understood or entirely unknown. “The knowledge gaps are massive and we don’t have the tools to understand all of what is being produced or released or [what is] having effects,” Bethanie Carney Almroth, an ecotoxicologist and microplastics researcher from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, told Mongabay in a video

interview. “We just don’t know. So we try to look at what we do know and add up all these little puzzle pieces to get a big picture.” As scientists endeavor to identify and understand the impacts of chemicals and other artificial substances — referred to en masse as “novel entities” — industries are pumping them out at a staggering rate. The global production of chemicals has increased fiftyfold since 1950, and this is expected to triple by 2050, according to a report published by the European Environment Agency. While some novel entities are regulated by governmental bodies and international agreements, many can be produced without any restrictions or controls. The mismatch between the rapid rate at which novel entities are being produced, compared to the snail’s pace at which gover nments assess risk and monitor impacts — leaving society largely flying blind as to chemical threats — is what prompted Carney Almroth and colleagues to make a weighty argument in a new paper published in Science and Technology: that we have breached the “planetary boundary” for novel entities, endangering the stability of the planet

we call home. While change is urgently needed to mitigate the impacts of novel entities, Carney Almroth said such an industrial paradigm shift would require a “massive overhaul of systemic societal structures.” Industries that produce novel entities are “supported by the fact that we require constant economic growth,” she said. “This is one of the ways that they’ve been able to keep producing and using chemicals, even in the face of toxicity data, because they can show that it can grow economies, provide jobs, provide materials and so on and so forth.” Despite the enormity of the problem, there may be opportunities for change in the near future. For instance, there are calls to form an international panel on chemical pollution, similar to those institutions focused on biodiversity and climate, such as the IUCN or the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In February and March, the U.N. Environment Assembly (UNEA) will also be meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, to discuss a number of environmental issues, including whether to mandate a new global treaty on plastics. (Mongabay India)

found, as well as gaming dice and bells which suggest gambling and religious activity took place there too. The Romans ruled Britain from 43AD to 410AD. “The excavation is significant in both enabling a clear characterization of this Roman town but also a study of many of its inhabitants,” Richard Brown, Senior Project Manager for COPA said. Fleet Marston is one of more than 100 archaeological sites that have been unearthed since 2018 as the construction of the HS2 line running from London to Birmingham has been developed. Archaeologists have been able to uncover rich details about life in Roman Britain, nearly two thousand years ago, through their excavation work. (Business Insider)

Akshay refuses to go on Kapil Sharma’s Show

B

ollywood actor Akshay Kumar is upset that a clip from comedian Kapil Sharma’s show was allegedly leaked on the internet, despite his request for it to be removed. Kumar and Sharma appear to be at odds, and the promotion of Sajid Nadiadwala’s upcoming Kumar-starrer ‘Bachchan Pandey’, which is set for a Holi release on March 18, appears to have been caught in the middle, as per a report by HIndustan Times. According to sources, it all began when Kumar appeared on Sharma’s show ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ recently. The comedian inquired about an interview he had with a “famous personality” in which Kumar inquired about his favourite way to eat mangoes. He was allegedly referring to an interview the actor had with Prime Minister Modi a few years ago. The ensuing squabble was caused by a clip of this exchange between the two. “Akshay took all of Kapil’s jokes head-on but the dig on the PM interview seemed to mock the dignity of such a high office. So Akshay requested the channel to not air that question. It is a right of the guests to make such a request as the show is not live. The channel agreed, but the said scene was leaked on the internet soon after,” says the source.

How climate change will shift farming landscape for coffee, cashews and avocados

S

ome countries that grow coffee, cashews and avocados will see the amount of land best suited to these crops shrink because of climate change, highlighting the need to plan adaptations now, according to new work published today in the journal PLOS One. The crops we eat depend on a variety of soil and climate conditions to grow, and climate change is expected to affect both temperature and rainfall in many areas around the world. Previous research has looked at how crops would be affected by these changes, and the findings spell trouble for some crops, including coffee. To find out where the best growing conditions for coffee, cashews and avocados are today, environmental systems scientist Roman Grüter and his colleagues combined information about what conditions these crops prefer with maps of current climate data and K Y M C

different soil or land types. Then, by incorporating climate models, they predicted where conditions would improve and where they would decline. The final maps were precise enough that Grüter, affiliated with the Zurich University of Applied Sciences and an author of the new study, could zoom in to less than a square kilometer in resolution. As earlier studies had suggested, the researchers found that the global area suitable for producing coffee will decrease. The new study was the first to look at cashews and avocados on

a global scale, and it found that the areas suited to growing cashews may actually increase, while avocados are predicted to lose much of their best-suited land but may see an increase in areas of moderate suitability. Beyond the global picture, however, Grüter’s maps show how individual countries or areas -- and the farmers who live there -- may be affected. For example, Brazil may gain farmland well-suited for cashews while Venezuela may lose it. Meanwhile, most of the coffee-growing areas in Vietnam may decline in

suitability, while China may see increases. Even within a country’s borders, there may be shifts, including changes in the areas of Mexico best suited to avocados. The crops in the study are important sources of income for farmers around the world, especially farmers with less than five acres of land. Many people may see their personal farms and livelihoods affected. Planning for how to adapt should start now, said Grüter. For instance, countries could try to help smallholder farmers by breeding or planting new varieties adapted for higher temperatures or drought. “I think it’s important to invest not only in modeling, but also now really invest in adaptation strategies,” said Grüter. He said he also thinks countries should include the affected farmers in decision-making. “Take the farmers on board from the beginning,” he said. (Inside Science)

Bruce Springsteen releases recording from 1st Solo Tour In 1995

B

r uce Springsteen released the live album Tower Theater 1995 today captured on December 9, 1995 in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania on Bruce’s first solo tour, which came in support of his album The Ghost Of Tom Joad. Bruce shared audio of Joad’s “Galveston Bay” to preview the live record. In early 1995, rumors abounded of a full-blown E Street Band reunion tour. The famed band had not toured extensively with The Boss since the late 1980s. While the group did reconvene in the studio in early ‘95 for new songs on Springsteen’s Greatest Hits as well as coming together for a few events, Bruce had other plans for the rest of the year and began recording his solo LP The Ghost Of Tom Joad, drawing its title from the protagonist of John Steinbeck’s 1939 novel, The Grapes

Of Wrath. In his essay on the new Tower Theatre 1995 recording, Erik Flannigan likens Joad to Springsteen’s first solo album, 1982’s Nebraska, although he also notes some key differences. Along with the aforementioned Nebraska cut “Mansion On The Hill,” Tower Theater 1995 sees Bruce performing all 12 songs off The Ghost Of Tom Joad including the title track to open along with “Adam Raised A Cain,”

“Sinaloa Cowboys,” rarity “The New Timer” and more. Springsteen also offered stripped-down versions of classics like “Blinded By The Light” (tour debut) “Born In The U.S.A,” “Darkness On The Edge Of Town” and more. Bruce delivered the final two songs from Joad, “Galveston Bay” and “My Best Was Never Good Enough,” as the final two songs of the Upper Darby concert. (Jam Base)

Excess weight may accelerate brain aging I t is widely known that excess body weight is associated with many health conditions. Now, researchers have found an association between adiposity — having too much fatty tissue in the body — and cognitive impairment. At the start of a new study, which appears in JAMA Network Open, Canadian researchers determined the adiposity of more than 9,000 participants. They measured both total body fat and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) — the fat that predominantly sits around organs in the abdominal cavity. Previous studies have associated VAT, or visceral fat, with increased morbidity and a higher mortality risk. Visceral fat increases the risk of many conditions, such as: • Heart disease, including heart attacks • Type 2 diabetes • Raised blood pressure • Stroke • Breast and colorectal cancer • Alzheimer’s disease This latest study suggests that excess fat may have mental as well as physical effects. All participants undertook two cognitive tests — the Digital Symbol Substitution Test (DSST) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) — to assess a range of cognitive

functions. The researchers adjusted the scores for cardiovascular risk factors, educational level, and MRIdetected vascular brain injury, which is known to be associated with cognitive impairment. The researchers found that higher total body fat and higher VAT were both significantly associated with lower DSST and MoCA scores. The association was greater on the DSST, which assesses processing speed, than on the MoCA, which is a multidimensional cognitive test. Compared with those in the lowest quartile (25%) of adiposity, the performance of those in the highest quartile was equivalent to an additional 3 years of cognitive aging. These results are not unexpected, as Dr. Anton Porsteinsson, professor and director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Care, Research and Education Program (AD-CARE) at the University of Rochester Medical Center, told Medical News Today: “It is well-known that greater adiposity and body fat are associated with increased cardiovascular risk factors and that those are associated with increased risk of cognitive decline. This cross-sectional study found that excess adiposity was a risk factor for reduced cognitive scores, indepen-

New device purifies water with static electricity

S

tatic electricity leapt from powering party tricks to batteries a mere decade ago, when scientists learned to repurpose the process behind doorknob shocks for deployable electricity. Recent advances in the technology may ultimately improve access to clean water, though not without some upgrades. Since the invention of the triboelectric nanogenerator, which harnesses static electricity to power a circuit, researchers have investigated dozens of potential applications -- from footstep-powered f loor lights to self-sterilizing face masks. Now, Guangqin Gu

and his colleagues at Henan University in China have developed a device that uses the same principle to kill microorganisms in water -- a process that could eventually help produce clean drinking water in remote areas. The team published their results in July in the journal Nanotechnology. Around 600 B.C., ancient Greek philosophers noticed that after rubbing fur on amber, the fossilized sap attracted lightweight objects. Centuries later, scientists attributed the phenomenon to the triboelectric effect, or static electricity (derived from the Greek word for “amber”).

dent of cardiovascular risk factors, educational level, and MRI-detected vascular brain injury.” This study reinforces findings from a previous study of older adults in Dublin, which found an association between adiposity, particularly central adiposity, and reduced cognitive function. The authors suggest that inflammation may play a role in cognitive impairment in those with overweight or obesity. One recent study involving more than 15,000 individuals found high levels of plasma C-reactive protein, an inflammatory marker, in those with a high BMI and a high waist-hip ratio. D r. Po r s t e i n s s o n agreed with this suggestion, saying, “Systemic inflammation and glucose intolerance emerge as lead suspects.” Dr. Laird also supports inflammation having a role. He said, “Proinflammatory cytokines from adipose tissue could also potentially be contributing to tissue damage via inflammation.” Hypertension and reduced blood flow There are also other potential mechanisms. For example, “Adiposity can often go hand in hand with other chronic conditions, such as hypertension, which could be a separate mechanism,” Dr. Laird told MNT.

“Obesity could be associated with reduced blood flow to the brain, which may increase the risk of vascular microcellular damage, which could lead to [a] reduction in cognitive test score,” he added. In another study, which Dr. Laird co-authored, scientists found that a 1-centimeter increase in waist size gave the same reduction in blood flow as 1 year of aging. This study confirms previous findings that overweight and obesity are associated with cognitive impairment, so what can people do to help combat this? Dr. Porsteinsson suggested several measures that may help: “Weight loss, exercise (both aerobic and resistance training), control of diabetes/glucose intolerance, or speed of processing cognitive training are a few that come to mind.” Citing study findings that those with a high BMI or high waist-hip ratio who did little physical activity had significantly lower cerebral blood flow, Dr. Laird added: “Since physical activity could potentially moderate obesity/blood flow associations, this [increasing physical activity] may be a cost effective and relatively easy way to help mitigate the negative impact of obesity.” (Medical News Today)

Takagi star ted strongly, shaving three tenths of a second off Wust’s first lap, but by the 700m mark she had dropped behind and failed to close the gap. As Wust cried and hugged team mates in joy, her rival appeared resigned. “How I raced today? BEIJING, FEB 7 (AGENCIES): Ireen Wust became the most successful Olympic speed skater in history with 12 medals on Monday after sweeping round the Beijing oval to retain her title and win gold in the Winter Games 1,500 metres by just under half a second. Wust’s 12 medals also put her joint third on the list for most podium finishes for men or women at the Winter Olympics. “This is just amazing. There’s a lot of different emotions going through my mind right now. I mean, it’s just bizarre that I was able to pull it off once again... I just have no words for it,” Wust said. “There’s something magical that gets to me when it comes down to the Games. Senegal wins first-ever Africa Cup of Nations title Women’s IPL to start ‘soon’: BCCI secy

YA O U N D E , F E B 7 ( AG E N C I E S ) : S a d i o Mane showed braver y and mental strength in putting behind him an early squandered penalty to power Senegal to their first African title and bring to an exciting close a troubled tournament in Cameroon. Mane had a seventh minute penalty saved in Sunday’s final against Eg ypt at the Olembe Stadium in Yaounde, a missed opportunity that could have proven costly as the game continued through extra time to a penalty shootout after a goalless stalemate. But he put the trauma behind him to step up and take the decisive kick in the post-match shootout to see his country to a 4-2 win on penalties. It was as much as Senegal deserved as they dominated the final, living up to their pre-tournament billing as favourites and confirming their ranking as the continent’s top team. It was a first Cup of Nations success for the West African country after

two lost finals in 2002 and 2019. Senegal were barely tested in the tournament, bizarrely scoring a single goal in the group stage - a last-minute Mane penalty in their opening game against Zimbabwe - and yet finishing top of their group. They then overcame the Cape Verde Islands, Equatorial Guinea and Burkina Faso to get to the final, while Egypt had a particularly tough run.

They went into extra time in each of their knockout rounds, two of them won on post-match penalties. Their fatigue going into the final was all too evident, exacerbated by another match that went on past the 90-minute mark. It is the second tournament in three editions that Egypt have f i n i s h e d r u n n e r s - u p, the defeat in Sunday’s final reducing captain

Mohamed Salah to tears. The 33rd edition o f A f r i c a ’s f avo u r e d sports event will be most remembered, however, for the deadly stadium crush when Cameroon meet the Comoros Islands in the second round, with eight killed and seven seriously injured amid lax security. Eyewitnesses reported police standing by as spectators rushed to try and push into the Olembe stadium, which

was closed for one match thereafter while the Confederation of African Football sought guarantees of better security from local authorities. CAF str uggled to keep organisation of the event on track, postponing it in 2019 when Cameroon wa s f o u n d t o b e n o t ready and replaced as hosts by Eg ypt. Even with a further 12-month postponement from 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a rush to complete works and further discussions over whether to cancel the event. It went ahead after Cameroon government guarantees but CFA found pitches in poor condition and general organisation tardy. The event was hit further by coronavirus outbreaks among most of the teams, as well as onerous conditions on spectators which brought poor attendance. The next Africa Cup of Nations will be hosted in the Ivory Coast in mid2023.

NEW DELHI, FEB 7 (AGENCIES): A fullfledged women’s Indian Premier League (IPL) could begin as early as next year, with the Indian cricket board (BCCI) saying it is working on delivering the tournament “soon”. A three-team Women’s T20 Challenge is staged alongside the men’s IPL, but many believe women deserve their own expanded tour nament with more teams and players. The Women’s T20 Challenge will continue t h i s ye a r, b u t B C C I secretary Jay Shah said things would change soon. “I want to assure you that BCCI is not only sincere but is taking all necessary steps to start a full-fledged women’s league similar to the IPL soon,” Shah told Reuters in an email. “The huge interest among fans and players towards the women’s T 2 0 C h a l l e n ge i s a n encouraging sign and we are all committed to making it happen.”

Jay Shah

The entire 2020 edition of the league and the second half of last year’s tournament were held in the United Arab Emirates as India grappled w i t h t h e C OV I D - 1 9 pandemic. This year’s IPL will begin in the last week or March and Shah was confident of staging the 10-team league in India. “The circumstances were different in the last couple of years, and we managed to kee p the show going under difficult circumstances by shifting it to the UAE. “The BCCI is keeping a close watch on the COVID-19 situation in the country and if it is

conducive, we will stage the event in India this year and I am pretty hopeful about that.” The board would take a “wait and watch approach” on the presence of spectators, depending on COVID-19 guidelines, he said. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja has mooted an annual T20 tournament also featuring India, England and Australia. Expanding the game wa s m o r e i m p o r t a n t than such a “commercial initiative”, Shah said. “With the IPL window expanding and the ICC (global) events every year in the cycle, our primary responsibility is to safeguard bilateral cricket at home, with emphasis on test cricket,” he added. “I am also looking forward to seeing cricket at the Olympics, as that will help the game grow. “Expansion of the sport is a challenge that our game faces and we must prioritise it over any short-term commercial initiative.”

MUMBAI, FEB 7 (IANS): Veteran Bollywood actor and wife of late India cricket captain, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, S h a r m i l a Ta g o r e h a s revealed that legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar -- who died on February 6 at 92 years of age -- had raised Rs. 20 lakh for the 1983 World Cup-winning team. The actor said that at that time the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was not a lucrative body and they didn’t have funds to felicitate the players. “ S h e ( L a t a Mangeshkar) was very fond of cricket. In 1983, when we won the World Cup, she raised funds with her brother (Hridaynath Mangeshkar). They raised Rs. 20 lakh for the Indian cricket team and they got

Rs. one lakh lakh each,” Tagore told Aaj Tak on Sunday. “At that time, BCCI didn’t have that much money. Even for Goa, with Sudhir Phadke saab (who was involved in Goa Freedom Movement), they did a concert for Goa Liberation and she contributed to that also,” added Tagore. A member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, Kirti Azad, fondly recollected his association with the great singer, posting a black-and-white image of the side with Lata Mangeshkar standing just behind the trophy at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi flanked by captain Kapil Dev and Mohinder Amarnath. Azad wrote, “Lata Didi we will miss you. The entire victorious World

Cup team of 83 will never forget your contribution to the team. Your Lata M a n ge s h k a r n i g h t a t Indraprastha Stadium, now IGI stadium, Delhi to collect funds for the team. #LataMangeshkar. We are indebted to you for life.” BCCI president Sourav Ganguly expressed his amazement at how Lata Mangeshkar’s voice never seemed to grow old and jaded in his tweet mourning the passing of the Nightingale. Ganguly tweeted: “RIP ... Bharat Ratna ... A very sad day for all Indians ... when u speak of talent she was one of the greatest and rarest the country has seen ... hard to believe that 20 yr lady is no more ... well her voice sounded like that every time... lots of respect and love... be in peace wherever u are.”

Real Madrid move six points clear as Sevilla held; Barcelona beat Atletico Madrid M A D R I D, F E B 7 (IANS): Marco Arsenio’s excellent 74th-minute goal gave Real Madrid a 1-0 win at home to Granada. The forward’s powerful shot into the corner of the Granada goal gave Madrid a win they deserved for an improved second-half display after an even first 45 minutes, and moves them six points clear at the top of La Liga. Real Madrid were without Vinicius Jr and Karim Benzema on Sunday night and in the first half they struggled without the Frenchman. FC Barcelona moved into fourth place in La Liga after a thrilling 4-2 win over Atletico Madrid in the Camp Nou Stadium. Atletico opened the scoring after a neat combination between Luis Suarez and Yannick Carrasco saw the Belgian beat Marc Andre Ter Stegen after just eight minutes, but Barca were quickly level after

Jordi Alba’s volley just two minutes later. Adama Traore was enjoying a happy return to Camp Nou and his pace was vital as he beat Mario Her moso in the 22nd minute to cross from Gavi to head in Barca’s second and just before halftime Barca breached Atletico’s

defence a third time, Xinhua reports. Gerard Pique headed against the bar and after Ferran Torres was unable to turn the ball in, Ronald Araujo provided the finish to make it 3-1. Dani Alves rif led a loose ball home from outside of the penalty area

to make it 4-1 in the 49th minute after Atletico again failed to clear a ball into their area. Luis Suarez then nodded Atletico back into the game and Atletico’s chances of getting a point increased when Alves was then sent off for putting his studs into the back of Carrasco’s calf.

The game got increasingly bad-tempered with several bad challenges but Barca held on while Atletico will be worried about new signing Daniel Wass who looked to suffer a knee injury in a bad challenge from Torres. Villarreal continue their climb up the table

with a 2-0 win away to third-placed Betis thanks to a Pau Torres header just before halftime with Etienne Capoue sealing the win with seven minutes left to play. Valencia rested several first-team regulars ahead of their forthcoming Copa del Rey semifinal in Bilbao

on February 11 for their 0-0 draw at home to Real Sociedad in a match that had more chances than the final score suggests. Osasuna goalkeeper Sergio Herrera saved Ivan Rakitic’s 92nd-minute penalty to hold second place Sevilla to a 0-0 draw in the El Sadar Stadium.

A draw was a fair result as Sevilla looked flat against a well-organised home side and the result sees them lose ground on Real Madrid. Two goals from Brais Mendez gave Celta a 2-0 home win against Rayo Vallecano, who made had several changes to their team ahead of next week’s Copa del Rey semifinal. Two controversial penalties helped Mallorca to a win in their relegation duel against Cadiz, with the spot-kicks taken by Silva Sevilla and new signing Vedat Muriqi overturning Ruben Alcaraz’s seventhminute goal for Cadiz. Elche made it five games without defeat as they came back from conceding a goal to Joselu to beat Alaves 3-1. Pere Milla netted twice after the break and Fidel added a third with five minutes left to play as Elche extended Alaves winless run to 11 matches.
