Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday called on the Ukrainian army to overthrow the government whose leaders he described as “terrorists” and “a gang of drug addicts and neo-Nazis”. The Kremlin on Friday said that President Putin was ready to send a delegation to Belarus for talks with Ukraine, as Russian forces approached Kyiv on Vladimir Putin the second day of Moscow’s invasion. Meanwhile, President Putin accused “Ukrainian nationalists” of deploying heavy weapons in residential areas of major cities to provoke Russian military, a claim that could fuel fears Moscow is creating pretexts for justifying civilian casualties. (Cont’d on p-9)
NEW YORK/ MOSCOW, FEB 25 (AGENCIES/REUTERS): The streets of several major cities across the globe transformed into seas of blue and yellow Ukrainian flags. Protesters have demanded action from their local leaders regarding the Russian invasion into Ukraine, which has already claimed dozens of lives. In Russia itself, protesters defied an official warning that explicitly threatened criminal prosecution and even jail time for those calling for or taking part in protests. (Read more on p-9)
The earliest known protest occurred outside Russia’s embassy in Washington. Protesters also marched to the White House to demand action from President Joe Biden. A giant flag was carried through Manhattan’s Times Square by a crowd of several hundred protesters. In London, hundreds of demonstrators, many of them Ukrainian and some weeping, gathered outside Downing Street, home to the prime minister, urging Britain to do more. “We need help, we need someone to support us,” said one.

DIMAPUR, FEB 25 (NPN): Taking note of the reports about the state government mulling to partially lift liquor prohibition, Dimapur Area Ao Baptist Pastors Fellowship (DAABPF) has said that the legislators should not even ponder to revoke the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act of 1989 with any other reason or reasons. In an open letter to the state government, DAABPF president pastor Temsü Jamir and secretary pastor Marnungba Longkumer said that they would stand firm against such imprudent contemplation by the government, and gave clear “prophetic warning” against any such “barefaced disastrous decisions”.

Reminding that the churches, in 1987, led the fight for the total prohibition in Nagaland, DAABPF said tears, sweats, fasting and prayers of the churches paid the price to slay the monstrous flow of alcohol in Nagaland. “We have cursed it in the name of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit and made vows before God, the forum said, asserting that the churches of Nagaland will never leave their stand under any circumstances. While stating that there were voices of vague analyses from several quarters, giving their maxim as “liquor prohibition was a flawed act”, DAABPF said they were surprised to see even well-respected indi-

Pointing out that the Baptist churches, in particular, have been blamed for the failure to implement the NLTP Act, DAABPF, however, said it was a total failure on the part of the government. As manufacturing and trading liquor, and bootlegging of local rice liquor were prohibited under the NLTP Act, DAABPF therefore said that the government should clean hands and restrain from backdoor lobbying against the act.

Even after its removal, Centre can re-impose AFSPA, says Rio Correspondent
KOHIMA, FEB 25 (NPN): State chief minister Neiphiu Rio Friday asserted that the Centre can re-impose the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), 1958 even after its removal in the event of continued existence of insurgency and recruitment of cadres. The chief minister said this during Sekrenyie festival the celebration of Angami community at the Naga Heritage Village, Kisama here on Friday organized by Angami Public Organization (APO). Stating that AFSPA was introduced in 1958 due to insurgency in the state, Rio said the demand for removal of AFSPA by Nagas grew after the Oting incident, adding that the state legislative assembly passed a resolution demanding repeal of the Act. Rio, however, said that the Union home minister Amit Shah clearly conveyed that AFSPA could be re-

moved, but the state should own responsibility for the consequences post removal of the Act. He said if the Act was withdrawn, Nagaland police should operate in place of Armed forces. Rio also said that the state will not progress as long as multiple illegal taxations and extortion continued. Justifying the formation of the opposition-less government (united democratic alliance) in the state, Rio said the move was to push for Naga political solution, adding it was “partially successful”. On the occasion, Rio stated that God blessed the Angamis abun-
dantly among the various tribes and urged the community members to come in unity and strengthen their bond and friendship. He said that Sekrenyi festival was known for purification and sanctification, which was observed for good health of the community. Rio also said that the festival was one celebration where an individual showcases one’s culture and traditions through attires, cuisines and sharing stories of ancestors by upholding the values of better understanding and maintaining tranquillity with fellow beings. He also stressed on the need to preserve identity, tradition and culture. The programme was chaired by APO president, Razouvoto Chatsu, and Rev. Mekhale Yhoshu read the scripture and gave the invocation. A host of legislators, officials and leaders from Angami frontal organisations also attended the celebration.
CNTC urges govt to heed demand of Dimasas DIMAPUR, FEB 25 (NPN): Taking up the issue raised earlier by Sumis and Dimasas of Dhansiripar who are demanding not to be placed under the new Chümoukedima district, Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) has asked the State government to hold wider consultations before demarcating boundaries of new districts. Welcoming the creation of new districts to accelerate development, CNTC however noted that the government’s “hasty move” to determine and integrate existing demarcation of Dhansiripar sub-division and some areas of Sumi villages with long-standing boundary problem with Peren district and placed under Chümoukedima dis-
trict, without considering the detailed analysis and views of all stakeholders, has only led to a public outcry. It said such important administrative rearrangements should be thoroughly studied before implementation as it could lead to serious repercussions and even social unrest. According CNTC the “forceful amalgamation” was tantamount to injustice which hurt the sentiments of people in the disputed areas and also the Dimasas, who are the earliest settlers in the plains of Dimapur as evident by the stone monoliths of Kachari Rajbari at Dimapur. CNTC said it was genuinely pleading through all democratic means to restore Dimasas back to Dimapur district as even the name “Dimapur” had been derived
from a Dimasa word. Hence, clubbing Dimasas under the newly-created district other than Dimapur was a forceful attempt to break their lineage with the place, CNTC said. It also said that creation of new districts should not alienate any section of people, but rather allow them to happily accept what was fair, just and without any bias. Noting that the fragmentation had led to fervent appeals from Dimasas of Dhansiripar area, CNTC said this must be looked into at the earliest before more social unrest took place. It said as there was border dispute between Dimapur and Peren districts too, which was a long-pending one and had even turned volatile, the government should take prompt measures in this regard.

Those against NPF are against Nagas : Dr. Shürhozelie Azo asks NPGs not to interfere in state politics DIMAPUR, FEB 25 (NPN): NPF president Dr Shürhozelie Liezietsu said NPF party belonged to Naga people and that every Naga was its member. Addressing an election rally at Shajouba under 48Mao Assembly constituency in Manipur for NPF candidate Losii Dikho, he said that NPF was committed to the issues of Nagas and Naga political issue was its priority. best achievement and joyous moment for all Naga people. He asserted that anyone going against the party’s official candidates would be going against the party and also mean going against Nagas. While citing reports of involvement of Naga national groups favouring certain candidates in the upcoming Assembly elections in Manipur, Dr. Shürhozelie said he did not believe that national workers would favour any particular political party or candidate as they would never stoop so low and
DIMAPUR, FEB 25 (NPN): Senior NPF leader and legislator, Khuzoluzo Azo Nienu urged the Naga political groups to not interfere in state politics and leave it to the politicians, a press note issued by the NPF youth wing stated. Addressing the rally at 48 Mao assembly constituency, Azo pointed out that had this regional ‘Cock party’ (NPF) not been born, Naga political struggle/issue would have died long back and the Naga political groups of today would just be mere “extortion group or terrorist groups”. He reminded that the oldest regional ‘Cock party’ formed in October (Cont’d on p-8) 21, 1963 was the blood line and the
therefore, they should not be maligned. Shürhozelie regretted that Nagas had forgotten the sacrifices made by four NPF MLAs of the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly who had resigned in protest against the anti-tribal Bill passed by the then Ibobi-led Congress government. He said no political party would allow its sitting MLAs to resign from the Assembly but, he claimed that NPF took the extreme step only in the interest of Naga people.
roots of the people, and said that the party was formed to up hold the Naga political struggle. “Thats why I always say this party was formed out of our forefathers sweat, blood and tears,” he said. Therefore, Azo said any Naga group going against the NPF would be like going against himself and his own policies or going against its own parents. Azo, therefore, urged the national workers to not interfere in state politics.“Naga political groups have no right to interfere in State politics nor do they have any right to decide your future. We the electorates must be bold enough to decide your own future and not allow others to decide out future,” he said. K Y M C

Khehovi Yeputhomi speaking at inaugural of the workshop in Kohima on Friday. (NP)
Correspondent KO H I M A , F E B 2 5 (NPN): Advisor for Art & Culture and Tourism, H Khehovi Yeputhomi on Friday, pointed out that despite high literacy rate in the state, Nagas were yet to cultivate a reading habit. Speaking at a workshop for public libraries organised by directorate of Art & Culture at state library as special guest, Yeputhomi said Nagas in general preferred watching and learning to reading and learning, where the latter was more effective comparatively. He urged upon the people to revive and instil the culture of reading among the society by
bridging the gap between libraries and readers. While lauding the department for taking the initiative which would benefit the society, the advisor also said libraries were considered as storehouses of knowledge and an important building block for the progress and development of the society. He observed that in this age of information and technology where information was available at the push of a button, many might question the relevance and significance of libraries. However, he said that with advanced technology and the shift from manual work to intellectual work, the importance of reading

books had more significance and simply studying text books or completing schooling alone was no longer adequate. The advisor disclosed that there were around 641 rural libraries registered under the department of Art & Culture. He lauded the initiatives of street library at Phek Town and community library at Kigwema and termed them as inspiring, encouraging and a step towards the right direction. Khehovi encouraged the people in these rural areas to seize the opportunity and make the best use of the resources and facilities available near them as many did not have access to such provisions.

Three MVA parties to stage protest against PM visit PUNE, FEB 25 (PTI): The workers of the Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress would stage a protest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit here on March 6, local leaders said on Friday. The three parties are part of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition in Maharashtra. The protest will be against the prime minister’s statement in Parliament blaming the Maharashtra government for the spread of coronavirus, the leaders said. City NCP chief Prashant Jagtap and his Congress counterpart Ramesh Bagwe made the announcement here. “To win votes in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, prime minister Narendra Modi made remarks in the Lok Sabha suggesting that Maharashtra spread COVID-19 in other states. This was an insult to the state. Therefore, as Modi is likely to come to Pune on March 6, the three parties will stage ‘Go Back Modi’ agitation,” the NCP leader said. The prime minister is expected to visit Pune on March 6 for the inauguration of Metro rail service, but there has been no official intimation about his program yet. The agitation will be held at all key crossroads in the city and protesters will wear black clothes, Jagtap said. The three MVA parties on Friday held a joint protest here against the arrest of state minister and NCP leader Nawab Malik by the Enforcement Directorate in an alleged money laundering case.

5 Paste Indian flag on vehicles: BJP betrayed Arrested by ED, Nawab Malik the nation, India to stranded nationals alleges hospitalised in Mumbai Kharge NATIONAL
NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2022
KIEV/NEW DELHI, FEB 25 (IANS): Print out an Indian flag and paste prominently on vehicles and buses while travelling towards Ukraine’s borders with Poland, Romania, and Hungary, the Indian embassy in Ukraine advised all the stranded Indian nationals. It also told the Indian nationals and students to carry passport, cash, preferably dollars, for any emergency expenses, and other essentials. The embassy has asked stranded Indians to move towards border check posts Poland, Romania and Hungary as camps have been set up for immediate evacuation from there. The Ministry of External Affairs is in touch with the Ministry of Defence. On Thursday, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan
Shringla stated that India is in touch with both Russia and Ukraine as a “stakeholder”. “We have told them that we will need provisions for airlifting. In that case, IAF can go along with commercial aircraft. All options are on the table,” he said. He also said that India’s topmost priority is safety and security of Indian nationals and their evacuation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Thursday discussed the ongoing crisis in Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin and stated that the differences between Russia and the NATO group can only be resolved through honest and sincere dialogue. The Prime Minister also sensitised the Russian President about India’s concerns regarding the safety of the Indian citizens in Ukraine, especially students, and conveyed that India attaches the highest priority to their safe exit and return to India.
NEW DELHI, FEB 25 (IANS): Slamming the Union government over the foreign policy “failures” amid the Russia-Ukraine crisis, the Congress accused the Centre of making one strategic blunder after another and betraying the nation. Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday posted on Twitter: “The Modi govt’s foreign policy failures have ensured that our adversaries are successfully weaning away our friends. Beijing Janata Party (BJP) govt has committed one strategic blunder after another. They have betrayed the nation.” Both the leaders were reacting to reports that Russia and Pakistan have come closer. Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi said: “Looking at the sudden expansion of Russian troops in Ukraine, the BJP government can no longer avoid the debate on China inside Parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi must discuss the IndoChina border conflict in the Parliament with different political parties and state his position.”

Russian roulette
ussian president Vladimir Putin has shown that he means what he says when he sent a Russian invasion force under “special military operation” into Ukraine on Thursday. Putin has been flexing his military muscle since the past few months to send a strong message that Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky was unacceptable because Ukraine cannot but be under Russian control. Ukraine has veered far away from being a Russian satellite after the break up of the Soviet Union. President Putin has frequently accused Ukraine of being taken over by extremists, ever since pro-Russian president, Viktor Yanukovych, was ousted in 2014 after months of protests against his rule. Russia then retaliated by seizing the southern region of Crimea and triggering a rebellion in the east, backing separatists who have fought Ukrainian forces in a war that has claimed 14,000 lives. Now edging toward the twilight of his political career, Putin, 69 and a former KGB officer, is determined to burnish his legacy and to correct what he has long viewed as one of the greatest catastrophes of the 20th century: the disintegration of the Soviet Union. In a lengthy televised address, Putin described Ukraine as an integral part of Russia’s history and said eastern Ukraine was ancient Russian lands and that he was confident that the Russian people would support his decision over the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics and directing the Russian Defence Ministry to deploy troops in those regions to carry out “peacekeeping functions.” Since late 2021, Russia began deploying big numbers of troops close to Ukraine’s borders, while repeatedly denying it was going to attack. The US President Joe Biden has been warning over and over again since the past few months that Russian invasion of Ukraine was imminent and could take place any day. Now that Putin has invaded Ukraine with a huge invading army through land, air and sea; the West and in particular NATO is under focus of the entire world. NATO has fought shy of admitting Ukraine into its fold due to Russian warning that NATO stop its eastward expansion and deny membership to Ukraine. In the aftermath of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, the only “assistance” that NATO and the West are providing to Ukraine is shouting from rooftops and promising a swift and harsh response. However, all these hold no meaning to the Ukrainian people who are seeing their homes demolished and loved ones killed by Russian missile attacks on civilian areas. The European powers including the USA and their so- called military alliance –NATO- lack guts and willingness to take on Putin. The NATO nations are totally wrong in thinking that imposing economic sanctions will hurt Putin and force him to give up his dangerous adventure. Putin knows that NATO is incapable of fighting a real war as each of the member nations have no shared ideology nor commitment. NATO member countries join the club merely to get military aid and benefits from the USA or Germany for their armies. On its part, although India has a long relationship with Russia since the erstwhile USSR; it has to chose whether this relationship will come in the way of speaking up on whether Russia is justified in invading independent Ukraine. The situation calls for clarity and not ambiguity as what India does, will be keenly watched by the international fora.
DailyDevotion The Destitution of Service
…though the more abundantly I love you, the less I am loved. —2 Corinthians 12:15
Natural human love expects something in return. But Paul is saying, “It doesn’t really matter to me whether you love me or not. I am willing to be completely destitute anyway; willing to be povertystricken, not just for your sakes, but also that I may be able to get you to God.” “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor…” (2 Corinthians 8:9). And Paul’s idea of service was the same as our Lord’s. He did not care how high the cost was to himself— he would gladly pay it. It was a joyful thing to Paul. The institutional church’s idea of a servant of God is not at all like Jesus Christ’s idea. His idea is that we serve Him by being the servants of others. Jesus Christ actually “out-socialized” the socialists. He said that in His kingdom the greatest one would be the servant of all (see Matthew 23:11). The real test of a saint is not one’s willingness to preach the gospel, but one’s willingness to do something like washing the disciples’ feet— that is, being willing to do those things that seem unimportant in human estimation but count as everything to God. It was Paul’s delight to spend his life for God’s interests in other people, and he did not care what it cost. But before we will serve, we stop to ponder our personal and financial concerns— “What if God wants me to go over there? And what about my salary? What is the climate like there? Who will take care of me? A person must consider all these things.” All that is an indication that we have reservations about serving God. But the apostle Paul had no conditions or reservations. Paul focused his life on Jesus Christ’s idea of a New Testament saint; that is, not one who merely proclaims the gospel, but one who becomes broken bread and poured-out wine in the hands of Jesus Christ for the sake of others.

Post-mortem
Covid effect: Reconciling the global with the local
M
anagement of business would be written afresh in the phase of post-Covid economic recovery and some significant new concepts would be incorporated for their long term relevance -- compelled by the ‘evolutionary’ impact of the pandemic. Since business is all about human activity, the most important question would be whether alternate ways of maintaining the physical outreach to users or customers would be invented and made viable to the satisfaction of all concerned. Secondly, it is open to question if a corporate needs to depend on a glossy, populous and noisy headquarter -- of which every executive wants to be a part -- to maintain organisational loyalty as well as the efficiency of output and delivery? Third, how has the role of Business Intelligence been affected, particularly in planning for the future? Further, what are the new paradigms, if any, in the vital areas of performance evaluation and human resource development? And finally, how does ‘globalisation’, the hallmark of success in business, stand in relation to the growth of local markets and ‘local economy’ that is emerging in a country like India as the successful model for economic recovery and sustainable business? All these facets of postCovid national and international economic scene are being intensely researched by economists and Centres of excellence in the field of business management. Te c h n o l o g y h a s emerged as the big saviour
of business in times of collapse of demand caused by the cessation of physical movement resulting in markets losing the ‘crowd’ of customers and also by a dampening of the flair for ‘product development’. It is technology that enabled the retail business to go online in an unprecedented manner and establish a new mode of generating and satisfying the customer demand, as the futuristic trend. Amazon was able to announce hiring of tens of thousands of hands in a situation of sudden large scale loss of conventional jobs in the market. Technology made it possible to handle global management of collection of local products and their dispersed delivery with speed. Covid has made retail a business inviting global competition. Thanks to innovative technology applications, many essential services like medical consultation, sourcing of medicines and hiring of para-medic assistance have risen on the horizon and are fast becoming a part of every body’s life. This will help maximise the use of hospital infrastructure for attending to patients who reported physically for a serious ailment. In the US and other developed countries clinics have gone online to the advantage of all concerned and this has enlarged the medical umbrella for the people at home. In India this must be worked out in a big way as a public health project which underscores the importance of ‘preventive’ care and prophylactic medication, was so essential for our populous country. There is no gainsaying the fact that Covid re-
strictions made ‘work from home’ an immediate fall back for corporates to keep their business going -- this practice, however, has come to stay for multiple reasons some of which established it as an advancement over the past. The employee was saved the hassle of dressing up, traveling and carrying his PC to office and certainly was expected to work with greater ‘peace and concentration’ at home and achieve greater ‘productivity’- which by definition is the output per unit of time. In any organisation there is this mix of policy makers, supervisors and a bulk of employees broadly acting as ‘compliers’. The last mentioned group could work from home without any detriment to the organisation and to an extent make the operations cost-effective provided of course that online supervision became stronger than before for keeping up efficiency. Work from home has produced a welcome outcome for the corporate body in as much as the supervisors who were senior executives -- just providing broad oversight -- would now work as ‘team leaders’ with direct hands-on involvement with those below. Their leadership acumen will be tested in terms of knowing their men better, delegating decision-making power and enhancing organisational cohesion. Work from home helps to make the corporate headquarter less ostentatious and more business like and define a true apex known for the physical presence of the leadership. The Board Room, it may be mentioned, will always be
the best place for the Directors to assemble even if they had the freedom to hold virtual meetings. Those allowed to work from home may be called to corporate office in spells by rotation so that they did not become ‘de conditioned’ and did not develop vested interest in the home option. Both in US and India this latter trend has been reported as a growing phenomenon showing how personal advantage was prevailing over the organisational good. ‘Return to office’ initiative would therefore rightly become a leadership trait. What has become even more important in the postCovid economic climate is the fundamental utility of ‘business Intelligence’ for planning and sustaining ongoing operations and affecting any course corrections necessitated by unforeseen changes in the external environ in terms of politico-legal, socioeconomic and technology related developments. Even in best of times business plans are in fact a guesswork since complete information about what lay ahead would never be available. A basic flaw in the traditional business plan is that it was considered infallible- just because it was believed to have been based on right decisions- whereas in the contemporary world any plan is vulnerable to unpredictable changes -Covid making the situation even worse. Capacity to course correct in the light of new information is now a requirement of successful business pursuits. All corporates need to invest well on Business Intelligence including
information on potential competitors and their ways. Covid had a certain impact as an ‘equaliser’ with the result that only two types of players had the advantage- big business commanding economy of scale and entrepreneurs putting innovative ideas into their start ups. Both however, would bank on reliable and comprehensive assessment of the business environ. Covid has in a sense given a big fillip to ‘knowledge economy’. In business, the old concept that ‘the individual is at the centre of all productivity’ has been -- beyond the reality of technology-driven processes -- put on test in the back drop of Covid restrictions. Members now working from dispersed locations have to have a fully developed sense of organisational loyalty, an added willingness to team up with others and a proven ability to take decision at their respective levels. There is a new challenge for human resource development in putting the right man at the right job, using up-skilling and reskilling to get the best out of the available man power and bringing ‘Emotional Quotient’ into full play to keep members satisfied amidst exposure to family distress and fear psychosis caused by the pandemic. Leaders of the enterprise may find that the typically Indian theory of ‘paternal nurtural’ management as against the Western approach to management that largely concerned itself with the work place doings of the employee, produced better results on all fronts. Boss-subordinate relationship has become more
interactive, evaluation has become more transparent and the sharing of credit has moved in the direction of proper recognition of collaboration and assistance from the earlier practise of the lead player cornering it all. This perhaps is the greatest ‘gift’ of the pandemic for the future corporate working. Finally, the Indian model of economic recovery and growth embodied in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call of ‘vocal for local’ is attracting global attention for it revives the familiar local market economy for generating demands of day to day living, decentralises trade and sale facilitating the rise of small businesses at the ground level and invents a bottom-up approach that took in its embrace the entire range of business from local to global with full utilisation of technology at all stages. At the level of national economic strategy it has given special meaning to ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ in areas of Defence, international trade and globalised business. This has the effect of bringing out the national talent and incentivising indigenous investment with or without external partnership. For a vast country like India with multiple economic classes, varying demands and availability of a wide variety of working hands, this economic model is going to work fine and push up the GDP with promise of growth at all levels of the economic pyramid. The Indian experiment may be a great path breaker for postCovid economic recovery. DC Pathak is a former Director of Intelligence Bureau

Prohibition too was largely supported in the American Baptist dominated South and it is no surprise why it is put in place in our state today. On a religious stand point, the debate over whether drinking alcohol is considered an offence in the eyes of God remains somewhat vague. Especially among the different denominations but especially among Protestants and Catholics. However, that is not the point of this article. Because you see, leaving aside the religious discourse over whether or not alcohol is a sin, on a purely rational point of view, it is impossible to put a blanket ban on the sale of alcohol simply because we do not live in a vacuum. There are neighboring states from where it can be easily purchased and smuggled across on a daily basis. And that has been the case for over 30 years now. There is a huge syndicate operating across our border in Assam where business is flourishing for those who sale alcohol to our state. Funnily enough, there are rumors that they themselves do not want the ban to be lifted because it could harm their business prospects and the huge profits they generate. Defence Ministry to create panel to monitor budget spending so that it is fully utilised: Rajnath NEW DELHI, FEB 25 (PTI): The Defence Ministry will create a panel with representatives from all three services to monitor its budget spending so that it is fully utilised in time, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Friday. The gover nment’s commitment to reducing imports and modernising armed forces with indigenous technology has been given further impetus in this budget, he said in his speech during a post-budget webinar. Singh said he is sure that the Defence Ministry has noted all the valuable suggestions received and deliberated during the webinar and has also drawn an action plan for time-bound implementation of the bud-

Projects under ‘MakeI’ category involve government funding of 90 per cent, released in a phased manner and based on the progress of the scheme, as per terms agreed between the Ministry of Defence and the vendor. S i n g h s a i d , “ We would create a monitoring mechanism under Director General-Acquisition, with representatives from all the three services to monitor the budget earmarked, spe-

This would help our evergrowing startups in the defence sector,” Singh mentioned. “We have been progressively increasing the capital procurement budget for the domestic industry, with 68 per cent of the capital procurement budget earmarked for 2022-23,” he noted.
Over 1.9 million Indian kids lost parent Northern Army commander reviews op preparedness or caregiver to COVID-19: Lancet study

More than 1.9 million children in India lost a parent or caregiver due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a modelling study of 20 countries published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health journal. Globally, the number of children estimated to have experienced the death of a parent or caregiver as a result of COVID-19 has surged to more than 5.2 million, the researchers said. Estimates of the numbers of children affected by COVID-19-associated orphanhood and caregiver death nearly doubled in the six months from May 1, 2021 through October 31, 2021 compared with the numbers after the first 14 months of the pandemic, they said. Globally, the new study suggests, two out of three children orphaned from COVID-19 are adolescents aged 10 to 17 years. “Sadly, as high as our estimates of orphanhood and caregiver deaths are, they are likely to be underestimates, and we expect these numbers to grow as more global data on COVID-19 deaths becomes available,” said Juliette Unwin, lead study author from Imperial College London, UK. “Real-time updated data suggests the true totals reached 6.7 million children
our current study looked at estimates through October 2021, the pandemic is still raging worldwide, which means COVID-19 related orphanhood will also continue to surge,” Unwin said. The number of children affected in the 20 countries studied ranged from 2,400 in Germany to more than 1.9 million in India, the researchers said. Calculations of estimated orphanhood cases per capita showed the highest rates were in Peru and South Africa, with 8 and 7 out of every 1,000 children affected, respectively, they said. The study found that in all countries, more than three times as many children experienced the death of a father than losing a mother. Adolescents accounted for a far greater proportion of those orphaned than younger children in all countries, according to the findings. “We estimate that for every person reported to have died as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, one child is left orphaned or loses a caregiver,” said study lead author Susan Hillis, who worked on the study at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “That is the equivalent of one child every six sec-
risk of lifelong adversity unless given appropriate support in time,” said Hillis, adding that support for orphaned children must be immediately integrated into every national COVID-19 response plan. However, the research authors noted some limitations in the study. Most notably, they said, the estimates are generated by mathematical modelling and cannot Future pandemic responses should include surveillance systems to monitor the numbers of children affected for every parental and caregiver death, the researchers said. This can be used to track needs for services and provide referral platforms that help point families towards appropriate support, they added.

In the last few years, India has been focussing on ‘atmanirbharta’ or selfreliance in its defence sector, he mentioned. “You can see the commitment for it in this year’s budget too,” Modi added. He also noted that the process of importing defence items is so long that
As a result of the Centre’s boost to Make in India, in the last seven years, more than 350 new industrial licences have been issued for defence manufacturing, he mentioned. “From 2001 to 2014, only 200 such licences were issued,” he noted. So far, the Defence Ministry has issued positive indigenisation list of over 200 defence platforms and equipment, he said. After the announcement of this list, contracts of around Rs 54,000 crore have been signed for domestic procurement, he noted. About 70 percent of this year’s defence budget has been kept for domestic industry only, he said. “The strength of India’s IT is our great strength. The more we use this power in our defence sector, the more confident we will be in our security,” he noted. “For example, cyber security is no longer limited to the digital world only. It has become a matter of national security,” he added. The prime minister said it is a source of happiness that in the last five-six years, India has increased defence exports by six times. Today, India is providing Made in India defence equipments and services to more than 75 countries, he noted.

NEW DELHI, FEB 26 (PTI): Batting for indigenisation in the defence sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday that the main principle of security is a customised system and that the surprise element is possible only when equipment is developed in the country. The prime minister also spoke about the challenges in the cyber domain and said cyber security is no longer limited to just the digital world as it has now become a matter of national security. The main principle of security, he said, is that a country should have its own customised and unique system. “If 10 countries will have same type of defence equipment, your defence forces would have no uniqueness. Hundreds arrested as shocked Russians protest Ukraine attack M O S C O W, F E B 2 5 (AGENCIES): Shocked Russians turned out by the thousands Thursday to decry their country’s invasion of Ukraine as emotional calls for protests grew on social media. Some 1,745 people in 54 Russian cities were detained, at least 957 of them in Moscow. Hundreds of posts came pouring in condemning Moscow’s most aggressive actions since the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Vladimir Putin called the attack a “special military operation” to protect civilians in eastern Ukraine from “genocide” — a false claim the U.S. had predicted would be a pretext for invasion, and which many Russians roundly rejected. Tatyana Usmanova, an opposition activist in Moscow, wrote on Facebook that she thought she was dreaming when she awoke at 5:30

dozens more. “Public opinion is in shock, people are in shock,” political analyst Abbas Gallyamov told The Associated Press. One petition, started by a prominent human rights advocate, Lev Ponomavyov, garnered more than 150,000 signatures within several hours and more than 330,000 by the end of the day. More than 250 journalists put their names
on an open letter decrying the aggression. Another one was signed by some 250 scientists, while 194 municipal council members in Moscow and other cities signed a third. “I’m worried about the people very much, I’m worried to tears,” said Zoya Vorobey, a resident of Korolyov, a town outside Moscow, her voice cracking. “I’ve been watching television since this morning, every minute, to see if anything changes. Unfortunately, nothing.” Several Russian celebrities and public figures, including some working for state TV, spoke out against the attack. Yelena Kovalskaya, director of a statefunded Moscow theater, announced on Facebook she was quitting her job, saying “it’s impossible to work for a killer and get paid by him.”
‘China could invade Taiwan after seeing West’s response’ NEW DELHI, FEB 25 (IANS): China could invade Taiwan after seeing the West’s response to Russia’s brutal war in Ukraine, a leading historian has warned, Daily Mail reported. Professor of European studies at the Oxford University, Timothy Garton Ash, said that Xi Jinping taking over the island militarily would be a ‘worst case scenario’, the report said. The political writer claimed that the Communist leader will be thinking: “If comrade Vladimir (Putin) can get away with it in Ukraine, maybe I’ll have a go.” He also warned Putin’s ‘minimal aim’ is to bring a new iron curtain down over eastern Europe because he wants to create a new empire, Daily Mail reported. Ash’s warnings came a day after Taiwan’s air force scrambled its fighter planes to warn away nine Chinese aircraft in its air defence zone.
9 EU agrees to freeze Putin, Russian minister’s assets B RU S S E L S, F E B 2 5 (AGENCIES): The EU has agreed to freeze European assets linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov over their decision to invade Ukraine, EU officials said on Friday. “We are hitting Putin’s system where it has to be hit, not only economically and financially, but also at the heart of its power,” German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said
as she arrived for a meeting in Brussels with EU counterparts. That is why “we now list also the president, Putin, and foreign minister Lavrov” to a packet of fresh sanctions agreed by EU leaders overnight, she said. The EU foreign ministers were to formally approve the sanctions, described as the harshest ever imposed by the bloc. While Ukraine’s beleaguered government is lobbying ferociously for
the EU to pull the trigger on a SWIFT ban for Russia, several EU countries -- most notably Germany, which has to pay Russia for natural gas -- are reluctant. An asset freeze directed at Putin and Lavrov -- both said by anti-corruption campaigners to have amassed immense wealth -- has strong symbolic impact, but it was unclear how European authorities could identify their assets with legal certainty.

(From p-1) Addressing the Ukrainian military in a televised address, he urged them to “take power in your own hands.” “It seems like it will be easier for us to agree with you than this gang of drug addicts and neo-Nazis,” he said, referring to leadership in Kyiv led by President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is Jewish. He said Ukraine’s leadership are “acting like terrorists all over the world: they are hiding behind people in the hope of blaming Russia for ci-
vilian casualties”. “It is known for a fact that this is happening on the recommendation of foreign consultants, primarily American advisers,” Putin said. Putin and top Russian officials have said Moscow’s troops are only targeting ultranationalists in Ukraine. According to report, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had repeatedly called for talks with the Russian leader during a weekslong diplomatic push in which Western countries tried to deter Putin from launching
an attack. Hours before Putin announced he was sending troops to Ukraine, Zelensky said he tried to call the Kremlin chief but “there was no answer, only silence”. As Russian troops closed in on Kyiv on Friday, Zelensky issued a new statement urging talks. “I would like to address the President of the Russian Federation once again. Fighting is going on all over Ukraine. Let’s sit down at the negotiating table to stop the deaths of people,” he said.

There are people who will take care of that.”
‘Any nation that countenances Russian aggression will be stained by association’ WASHINGTON, FEB 25 (PTI): In an apparent message to countries which are not standing by its side or are supporting Moscow, US President Joe Biden has said that any nation that countenances Russia’s “naked aggression” and a “totally unjustifiable” war against Ukraine will be stained by association. Liberty, democracy and human dignity are the forces far more powerful than fear and oppression, Biden told reporters at a White House news conference on Thursday as he launched a frontal attack on his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and announced a series of fresh sanctions against Russia. “A n y n a t i o n t h a t countenances Russia’s naked aggression against Ukraine will be stained by association. When the history of this area is written, Putin’s choice to make a totally unjustifiable war on Ukraine will have left Russia weaker and the rest of the world stronger,” he asserted. Biden said the US and its allies and partners will emerge stronger, more united, more determined, and more purposeful from this situation. M O S C O W, F E B 2 5 (AGENCIES): The head of the Russian space agency Roscosmos has said that the new sanctions announced by the United States have the potential to destroy our cooperation on the International Space Station (ISS). The harsh new sanctions were announced by US President Joe Biden on Thursday, to punish Russia for launching a full-scale attack on Ukraine. Currently, the ISS is home to four American, two Russian and a German astronaut working side-byside in microgravity. “If you block cooperation with us, who will save the ISS from an uncontrolled deorbit and fall into the United States or Europe?” Roscosmos Director General Dmitry Rogozin’s said in a Twitter post on Thursday, shortly after the US announced new sanctions. “There is also the option of dropping a 500-tonne structure to India or China. Do you want to threaten them with such a prospect? The ISS does not fly over Russia, so all the risks are yours. Are you ready for them?” he said in subsequent tweet. He then offered a “friendly advice”, asking the US not to behave “irresponsibly”. The new sanctions announced by the US include blocking export of technology, which Biden said would “limit” Russia’s ability to advance its military and aerospace sector. The US has also announced curbs on Russian banks and people who are close to the Kremlin. However, NASA has clarified that new sanctions won’t endanger the space cooperation between the two countries. Rogozin later tweeted a news article about NASA’s statement, and said Russia is “analysing the new US sanctions before giving a detailed response”.

Two hours into a meeting of foreign ministers, the Latvian representative, Edgars Rinkēvičs, tweeted that the bloc had formally “adopted the 2nd sanctions package”. Study claims life replays before ours eyes when we die Priyanka says Ukraine situation ‘terrifying’, urges people to help E ver imagined what happens in the brain when a person dies? Brain scans of a dying man revealed that our entire life flashes in front of our eyes like lightning. What happens inside your brain during near-death experiences and after death are questions that have puzzled neuroscientists for centuries. A new study published in the journal Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience suggests that our brain remains active and coordinated during and after the transition to death, and may even be programmed to orchestrate the whole ordeal. “Something we may learn from this research is: although our loved ones have their eyes closed and are ready to leave us to rest, their brains may be replaying some of the nicest moments they experienced in their lives,” said Dr Ajmal Zemmar, a neurosurgeon at the University of Louisville, US,
who organised the study. Neuroscientists at the University of Tartu, Estonia, recorded the activity of a dying 87-year-old patient with epilepsy. They found rhythmic wave patterns similar to those that occur during dreaming and meditation. They used continuous electroencephalography (EEG) to detect the seizures and treat the patient. During these recordings, the patient had a heart attack and passed away. This unexpected
event allowed the scientists to record the activity of a dying human brain for the first time ever. “We measured 900 seconds of brain activity around the time of death and set a specific focus to investigate what happened in the 30 seconds before and after the heart stopped beating,” Zemmar said. “Just before and after the heart stopped working, we saw changes in a specific band of neural oscillations, so-called gamma oscillations, but also in others such as delta, theta, alpha and beta oscillations,” he added. Brain oscillations (more commonly known as ‘brain waves’) are patterns of rhythmic brain activity normally present in living human brains. The different types of oscillations, including gamma, are involved in high-cognitive functions, such as concentrating, dreaming, meditation, memory retrieval, information processing, and con-
scious perception, just like those associated with memory flashbacks. “Through generating oscillations involved in memory retrieval, the brain may be playing a last recall of important life events just before we die, similar to the ones reported in near-death experiences,” Zemmar said. “These findings challenge our understanding of when exactly life ends and generate important subsequent questions, such as those related to the timing of organ donation.” While this study is the first of its kind to measure live brain activity during the process of dying in humans, similar changes in gamma oscillations have been previously observed in rats kept in controlled environments. This means it is possible that, during death, the brain organises and executes a biological response that could be conserved across species. (IANS)

ctress Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who was appointed the UN Goodwill Ambassador in 2016, has strongly reacted to the crisis which is currently unfolding in Ukraine following the military attack launched by Russia. Terming the situation as “terrifying”, she has urged people on behalf of Unicef to provide aid to Ukraine. The actress shared a video of a news coverage on the situation in Ukraine, which is getting battered with Russian bombing on their military bases. The bombing has created widespread panic among the Ukrainians, who have turned subway stations into underground bunkers to stay safe during the ongoing
skirmish. Priyanka wrote in the caption, “The situation unfolding in Ukraine is terrifying. Innocent people living in fear for their lives and the lives of their loved ones, while trying to navigate the uncertainty of the immediate future.” She further wrote, “It’s difficult to comprehend how in the modern world this could escalate to such a catastrophic point, but this is a consequential moment that will reverberate around the world.” Urging people to lend a helping hand, she wrote, “There are innocent lives living in this war zone. They are just like you and me. Here is more info at the link in my bio about how to assist the people of Ukraine.” The ongoing
crisis in Ukraine has drawn varied reactions from influential people. Earlier, actor Sonu Sood had urged the Indian Embassy in Ukraine to help find an alternative route for evacuating stranded Indians. (IANS)

lems (45%), voice problems (45%), and low blood pressure (14%). Almost all (19 of 22 patients) had three or more symptoms related to vagus nerve dysfunction. The average length of symptoms was 14 months. Six of 22 patients had a change in the vagus nerve in the neck, which the researchers observed by ultrasound. They had a thickening of the vagus nerve and increased “echogenicity,” which suggests inflammation. What’s more, 10 of 22 patients had flattened “diaphragmatic curves” during a thoracic ultrasound, which means the diaphragm doesn’t move as well as it should during breathing, and abnormal breathing. In another assessment, 10 of 16 patients had lower maximum inspiration pressures, suggesting a weakness in breathing muscles. Eating and digestion were also impaired in some patients, with 13 reporting trouble with swallowing. During a gastric and bowel function assessment, eight
patients couldn’t move food from the esophagus to the stomach as well as they should, while nine patients had acid reflux. Three patients had a hiatal hernia, which happens when the upper part of the stomach bulges through the diaphragm into the chest cavity. The voices of some patients changed as well. Eight patients had an abnormal voice handicap index 30 test, which is a standard way to measure voice function. Among those, seven patients had dysphonia, or persistent voice problems. The study is ongoing, and the research team is continuing to recruit patients to study the links between long COVID and
the vagus nerve. The full paper isn’t yet available, and the research hasn’t yet been peer-reviewed. “The study appears to add to a growing collection of data suggesting at least some of the symptoms of long COVID is mediated through a direct impact on the nervous system,” David Strain, MD, a clinical senior lecturer at the University of Exeter Medical School, told the Science Media Centre. “Establishing vagal nerve damage is useful information, as there are recognized, albeit not perfect, treatments for other causes of vagal nerve dysfunction that may be extrapolated to be beneficial for people with this type of long COVID,” he said.

everal long COVID symptoms could be linked to the effects of the coronavirus on a vital central nerve, according to new research being released this spring. T h e va g u s n e r ve, which runs from the brain into the body, connects to the heart, lungs, intestines, and several muscles involved with swallowing. It plays a role in several body functions that control heart rate, speech, the gag reflex, sweating, and digestion. Those with long COVID and vagus nerve problems could face long-term issues with their voice, a hard time swallowing, dizziness, a high heart rate, low blood pressure, and diarrhea, the study authors found. Their findings will be presented at the 2022 European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in late April. “Most long COVID subjects with vagus nerve dysfunction symptoms had a range of significant, clinically-relevant, structural and/or functional alterations in their vagus nerve, including nerve thickening, trouble swallowing, and symptoms of impaired breathing,” the study authors wrote. “Our findings so far thus point at vagus nerve dysfunction as a central pathophysiological feature of long COVID.” Researchers from the University Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol in Spain performed a study to look at vagus nerve functioning in long COVID patients. Among 348 patients, about 66% had at least one symptom that suggested vagus nerve dysfunction. The researchers did a broad evaluation with imaging and functional tests for 22 patients in the university’s Long COVID Clinic from March to June 2021. Of the 22 patients, 20 were women, and the median age was 44. The most frequent symptoms related to vagus nerve dysfunction were diarrhea (73%), high heart rates (59%), dizziness (45%), swallowing prob-

Politano’s low finish three minutes from time was too late for Napoli to affect the outcome.

bowling attack, which was rampaging in the first Test. Erwee was slower in his innings, though moved into his knock through a mix of shots and provided the majority of runs by the time South Africa brought up their century opening stand. It’s the first opening stand of over a hundred by the Proteas in Test cricket in 10 years. Elgar was undone by a Tim Southee delivery on 41, with the Blackcaps pacer the pick of the attack. Latham’s side was unable to make headway even with the scalp, as No.3 Markram too showed his class. The right-hander took his time to gauge the conditions, before accelerating to 42,
with most of his runs coming in boundaries. Markram accompanied Erwee through the eighties and nineties, as the newcomer to the side avoided a nervous tea break by reaching three figures in the last over of the second session. Negotiating the shortball tactics of Neil Wagner, Erwee pulled around the corner to bring up his hundred. Resuming after tea at 163/1, the two set batters continued to make the scoreboard tick steadily. Markram, in particular, scored boundaries off Kyle Jamieson’s bowling as he moved closer to getting to his first fifty of the series.
STOCKHOLM, FEB 25 (AGENCIES): Swedish double Olympic speed skating champion Nils van der Poel has donated one of his gold medals to Chineseborn Swedish citizen Gui Minhai, who is imprisoned in China. The skater, who won the 5,000m event at the Beijing Olympics and then broke the world record adding the 10,000m gold, handed the medal to Gui’s daughter Angela on Thursday to raise awareness of the human rights situation in China, according to a statement released by Amnesty International. “I want human rights abuses in China to be reduced and Gui Minhai to be released. It is a lot to ask, but it is the only reasonable thing to wish for,” Van der Poel said. Bor n in China but holding Swedish citizenship, author and bookseller Gui was sentenced to 10 years in prison in February 2022 for illegally providing intelligence overseas. He had previously lived in Hong Kong and sold books critical of the Chinese political leadership, and his arrest and conviction led to tensions with Sweden. Van der Poel said that the recent Beijing Winter Olympics were exploited to whitewash human rights issues. Van der Poel handed over the Olympic medal to Gui’s daughter Angela on Thursday, the statement said.
BARCELONA, FEB 25 (IANS): Formula One on Friday said that it has cancelled the Russian Grand Prix scheduled for September 25 this year at Sochi’s Olympic Park following Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine. On Thursday, Russian troops began a high-scale invasion of Ukraine, resulting in widespread condemnation of President Vladimir Putin’s ‘special military operation’ by prominent leaders in the world. “The FIA Formula 1 World Championship visits countries all over the world with a positive vision to unite people, bringing nations together. We are watching the developments in Ukraine with sadness and shock and hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to the present situation.” “On Thursday evening Formula 1, the FIA, and the teams discussed the position of our sport, and the conclusion is, including the view of all relevant stakeholders, that it is impossible to hold the Russian Grand Prix in the current circumstances,” said a statement from Formula One. Earlier on Thursday,
just hours after Russia invaded Ukraine, four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel had said that he would not race in the Russian Grand Prix if it went ahead. “My own opinion is I should not go, I will not go. ‘ think it’s wrong to race in that country. I’m sorry for the people, innocent people who are losing their lives, getting killed for stupid reasons under a very strange and mad leadership. I woke up again after this morning’s news, shocked. I think it’s horrible to see what is happening,” Vettel was quoted as saying by The Guardian. Reigning world champion Max Verstappen agreed with what Vettel had said. “When a country is at war, it is not right to race there.” Previously on Friday, UEFA has decided to shift the 2021-22 Champions League final from Saint Petersburg to Stade de France in Saint-Denis, France for May 28. Apart from this, football club Manchester United dropped Russia’s largest airline fleet Aeroflot as a sponsor and ATP also said that next week’s ATP Challenger event in Moscow will not take place.

Dr. James Thoppil, Bishop of Kohima Diocese who grace the occasion as the main celebrant stated that “Fifty years is long period of time and we have gathered here to thank and praise God, the Almighty Father, who blessed us through his Son, Jesus Christ and continues to animate us by the power of the Holy Spirit.” He further added that if we have lived 50 years of Catholic faith, it is because of the courageous and committed life of the pioneers, who, I am sure, began their journey of faith with great hope and determination despite many difficulties and opposition and even deprivations. But nothing could deter them from living the faith they accepted willingly and freely. He quoted from St. Paul, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword.” He encouraged the faithful to be grateful to the pioneers for the committed catholic life. He further added that we celebrate the golden Jubilee of the strong faith and determination of our elders, our pioneers in faith from this village. He concluded by inviting the faithful to be genuine in our practice of piety (religion), sharing our resources and in our prayers. Today we can say proudly that we are heirs of a great legacy left by our pioneers. While being grateful to them we must also continue their legacy with great fervour and determination, he added. Rev. dev will become the third Russian man to reach No. 1 in the ATP Rankings, joining Yevgeny Kafelnikov (1999) and Marat Safin (2000-01). The 25-year-old will also join Andy Murray (2016) as the only first-time World No. 1 since Djokovic first reached top spot in July 2011. The last player outside of the Big Four of Djokovic, Roger Federer, Murray and Rafael Nadal who has held No. 1 was Andy Rod-
dick in February 2004. Vesely has now defeated the top seed twice, having won their other meeting in Monte Carlo in 2016. It is the first time the qualifier has reached the semi-finals at a tour-level event since 2020, when he enjoyed a run to the title in Pune. The 28-year-old, who had never been beyond the first round at the ATP 500 event in three previous appearances, has now earned four Top 10 wins, with his last before he defeated Djokovic coming against then-World No. 5 Alexander Zverev at Wimbledon in 2019. Since Djokovic regained his No. 1 status in February 2020, he has won eight tour-level titles, including three Grand Slam crowns and three ATP Masters 1000 trophies. The 34-year-old was competing in his first tournament of
the year this week in Dubai. In other action, Denis Shapovalov overcame Lithuanian qualifier Ricardas Berankis 7-6(4), 6-3 to advance into his first semifinal of the season. The sixth seed fired 14 aces and did not face a break point to triumph after one hour and 32 minutes, improving his ATP Head2Head record against Berankis to 3-1. The 22-year-old, who is aiming to win his first tour-level title since he triumphed in Stockholm in 2019, is now 11-4 on the season. Shapovalov helped guide Canada to the ATP Cup title in January, before he enjoyed a run to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open. The World No. 14 also reached the last four in Dubai last season, losing to South African Lloyd Harris.

DUBAI, FEB 25 (AGENCIES): World No. 123 Czech Jiri Vesely upset top seed Novak Djokovic in the Dubai quarter-finals Thursday, guaranteeing that the Serb will cede the No. 1 ATP Ranking to Daniil Medvedev on Monday. After Medvedev reached the quarter-finals at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC on Wednesday, Djokovic knew he had to advance into the last four at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships if he wanted to continue his bid to remain atop tennis’ mountain. However, the 34-yearold came up against an inspired Vesely, who played aggressively throughout to stun Djokovic 6-4, 7-6(4) in one hour and 57 minutes. “It is an amazing feeling,” Vesely said in his oncourt interview. “I never

really thought I would have a chance against Novak. He is one of the greatest of all time. After the past 12 months, it is unbelievable. I have so many emotions inside. It is hard to describe. It is an amazing feeling.” The Czech qualifier recovered from failing to serve out the match at 5-4 in the second set, recomposing himself to prevail in the tie-break under the lights on centre court. LO N D O N, F E B 2 5 (AGENCIES): If Arsenal finish in the Premier League’s top four and return to mix it with Europe’s elite for the first time since the 2016-17 season they may look back on Thursday’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers as a pivotal moment. With 82 minutes on the clock they still trailed to a 10th-minute goal by Wolves’s South Korean forward Hwang Hee-Chan. But just when the situation began to look desperate and with Wolves eyeing fifth place in the table, substitute Nicolas Pepe spun on a sixpence to equalise. In a frantic finale, Pedro Neto shot agonisingly wide for Wolves and Martin Odegaard went close for Arsenal before skipper Alexandre Lacazette’s shot from close range went in off the arms of Wolves keeper Jose Sa to send the home crowd wild. Arsenal’s third successive league win lifted them above West Ham United into fifth place with 45 points, one behind Manchester United but having played two fewer games. Wolves remained seventh with 40 points. No wonder there was a mood of euphoria sweeping around the Emirates Stadium at the end of an absorbing tussle.

weight division. The Singapore Weightlifting International is a qualifying event for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The top eight lifters in each weight category in the ongoing tournament directly qualify for the 2022 CWG.

A r s e n a l h ave n o t played in the Champions League since they lost 10-2 on aggregate to Bayern Munich in 2017. They now have their destiny in their own hands, although for a long time on Thursday it seemed they had a fluffed the chance to put real pressure on Manchester United as they were repelled by one of the meanest defences in the league. But their patience finally paid off. “We don’t know today how important this will be but we know the importance of winning our matches and certainly at home we know we have to be extremely good,” Arse-
nal manager Mikel Arteta said. “In May we want to be fighting for those places. Wolves have stealthily climbed the table under manager Bruno Lage with four successive away league wins. They were gifted the lead when Arsenal defender Gabriel’s terrible back pass was intercepted by Hwang who coolly slotted the ball into the empty net from an acute angle. Raul Jimenez spurned another Wolves chance but Arsenal began to dominate. Lacazette and Bukayo Saka had opportunities but every time Arsenal got a glimpse of a goal a Wolves defender appeared to snuff
out the threat. Arsenal ramped up the pressure but Wolves defended like trojans and even when the hosts did get a sighter, Sa was there to save his side, as he did with a great low stop from Lacazette. Manager Mikel Arteta sent on Eddie Nketiah and Pepe to beef up Arsenal’s attack and it paid off. Nketiah’s pull back from the byline picked out Pepe who span 180 degrees to shoot past Sa. The crowd roared Arsenal forward and Lacazette’s shot, Arsenal’s 26th attempt at goal, squirmed its way in.
Strandja Memorial Boxing: Nikhat, Nitu cruise into final NEW DELHI, FEB 25 (IANS): India’s Nikhat Zareen and Nitu continued their rampaging form to progress into the finals at the 73rd Strandja Memorial Boxing Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria on Friday. The 25-year-old Nikhat secured a hard-fought yet convincing 4-1 win against Turkey’s Buse Naz Cakiroglu, while Nitu clinched a dominating victory against Hanna Okhota of Ukraine in the semi-finals. In an intensely fought women’s 52kg semi-final battle, the 2019 edition’s champion Nikhat put up a solid resistance against the Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Cakiroglu as both the boxers exchanged heavy blows and fought from a close distance. However, Nikhat, the boxer from Telangana, held her nerve and tilted the result of the nail-biting encounter 4-1 in her favour with some hard-hitting punches. In a contrasting women’s 48kg semi-final bout, Nitu produced a well-composed performance against the 2018 World Championships silver medallist
Okhota. Having taken an early lead after the opening round, the two-time world youth champion from Haryana capitalised on the momentum and executed timely and precise punches throughout the second round that saw her putting herself in a commanding position. Eventually, the Indian progressed into the final after the Ukrainian boxer abandoned the bout before the start of the third round. Nitu and Nikhat will play their gold medal matches on Sunday at Europe’s oldest international boxing tournament. Later, another Indian boxer Nandini will fight for a place in the final as she takes on Kazakhstan’s Lazzat Kungeibayva in the +81kg Last-4 stage. On Thursday night, Ar undhati Choudhar y (70kg) and Praveen (63kg) bowed out in the women’s quarter-finals. While Choudhary lost to reigning Olympics champion Turkish boxer Busenaz Surmeneli 1-4, Parveen went down fighting against Russia’s Nataliya Sychugova 2-3.
