move, which he termed as “undemocratic” and “forcible amalgamation”. He alleged that barring two or three villages, a huge majority of the villages were not approached for their opinion regarding shifting of the sub-division from Dimapur to Chümoukedima. He said several village councils and unions from Dhansiripar sub-division had approached and submitted memorandums and open letters to the State government expressing their desire to be under the administrative area of Dimapur. He regretted that the
government had maintained silence on the issue since day one. Acknowledging that the decision to organise a rally was not right due to Covid-19 pandemic, he said they were compelled to hold it to show their resentment against the State government’s decision. In his speech, SemaDimasa Union Dhansiripar sub-division unit president Vekuto Swu said JCCV and its members would fight till the end against the decision. He urged the government to listen to the opinion of the people, while lamenting the government’s alleged “divide and rule policy”. He also accused the government of still not being able to resolve the inter-district boundary issue between Dimapur and Peren, besides questioning its motive of creating new districts without even properly demarcating earlier district borders. He urged chief minister Neiphiu Rio to look into the concerns of the 45 villages, irrespective of the decision taken in the State cabinet.

ed that the 82.50km long line would have eight stations and 20 tunnels covering a total length of 29.30km. The meeting also discussed various issues related to the project and how the government could supplement in the smooth conduct of the works being executed. State chief secretary J Alam expressed appreciation to the railways for taking up the much-needed project, which he said would benefit the people of the state. He said that proper instructions have been given to the respective deputy commissioners to ensure that the project was implemented smoothly. Alam assured all necessary support from the state ma-
chinery so the project was completed on time. He also instructed the state PWD and railways to conduct joint survey on the connecting roads to the stations and to work out the solutions at the earliest. Alam opined that the railway stations should have a Naga traditional touch in its architecture and designs so the travellers, both local and tourist, could have a glimpse of Nagaland from the station itself. The meeting was attended by home commissioner, commissioner Nagaland, commissioner & secretary transport, secretary works & housing and other senior officials both from the state and railways.
Overall Covid-19 situation optimistic: Govt Manipur election dates rescheduled NEW DELHI, FEB 10 (PTI): The overall COVID-19 pandemic situation in the country is optimistic and improving even as some states, including Kerala and Mizoram, are still reporting high positivity rates and are of concern, the government said on Thursday. Urging people not to lower their guard, NITI Aayog member (Health) Dr. VK Paul said even though a consistent decline in coronavirus infections and daily positivity rate has been noted across all states, nearly 40 districts are still reporting an increase in weekly cases. “The overall COVID-19 pandemic situation in
the country is optimistic and cases seem to be settling, but if we look at it closely, then at state and district levels, there are data of concern,” he said at a press conference, adding that the contraction of the pandemic is apparently consistent. The daily positivity in Kerala is 29.57%, Mizoram has 26.5% positivity, Himachal has 11.79% positivity, 12% in Arunachal Pradesh and 17% in Sikkim, so these are points of concern, Paul said. “So we are clearly passing through a transition towards improvement, but this is not the time for us to be less vigilant. We cannot
lower our guard. Covid appropriate behaviour has to be taken as the ‘new normal' and that includes wearing masks, ventilated environment, social distancing and general discipline…,”he said. Health Ministry joint secretary Lav Agarwal said on January 24, the daily positivity rate was recorded at 20.75%, which has now decreased to 4.44%, which indicates decreased spread of infection. About the vaccine coverage, the government said 96 per cent of India's adults have been administered the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, while 78 per cent are fully vaccinated.
New rules for foreign arrivals
NEW DELHI, FEB 10 (AGENCIES): The government on Thursday revised guidelines for international arrivals, removing the category of ‘at risk’ countriesintroduced when the Omicron Covid variant emerged - and also recommending self-monitoring of 14 days for symptoms against the current seven days of home quarantine. The new guidelines will come into effect from February 14, the Union Health Ministry said. (Cont’d on p-8)

IMPHAL, FEB 10: Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday rescheduled poll dates for the twophase elections to Manipur Legislative Assembly. As per an ECI release, the first phase of polls, which was earlier scheduled on February 27 (Sunday), has been deferred by a day and the polling will now be held on February 28 (Monday). The second phase of the polling will be held on March 5 (Saturday) instead of March 3 (Thursday) as announced earlier. The ECI rescheduled the poll dates in the backdrop of demands for rescheduling
the first phase poll date that falls on Sunday. Having considered inputs, representations, past precedents, logistics, ground situation and all facts and circumstance, the commission decided to revise the polling dates, the release stated. ECI however did not mention any change in the dates for filing of nominations, last date of withdrawal of candidatures and others. Sources said one reason for rescheduling the polls was the demand made by some Christian organisations not to hold election on a Sunday. February 27, the earlier announced date for phase one of the polls, is a Sunday and Christians go
to church to offer prayers that day. The release stated that commission had visited Manipur on February 7 and 8 to review the preparedness and held interaction with political parties, chief secretary, DGP and other government officers, DG Assam Rifles and other law enforcement agencies. Meanwhile, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has so far seized 15,826.58 gram of gold worth Rs 7.71 crore. DRI also seized 15,86,800 cigarette sticks worth Rs 3.1736 crore on February 6. IT department has also seized a total of Rs 1.475 crore in cash so far.
Over 60 pc polling in first phase of UP polls Oppn-less govt not for Naga political solution, says TNR LU C K N OW, F E B 1 0 (PTI): Over 60 per cent voter turnout was recorded in the first phase of polling held Thursday across 58 assembly constituencies in 11 districts of Uttar Pradesh. Polling closed at 6 pm following a one-hour extension because of COVID-19 protocols. The day passed off peacefully with minor technical snags in EVMs at some places, election officials said. Additional chief election officer BD Ram Tiwari said, “There were reports of a technical error in EVMs at some places.” Those EVMs

were being replaced as the reports came in, he added. On Samajwadi Party's allegation that poor voters were not allowed to exercise their franchise in Dundukheda village in the Kairana assembly constituency, Tiwari said the district magistrate concerned was asked to look into the matter. Agra recorded 60.33 per cent polling, Aligarh 60.49 per cent, Baghpat 61.35 per cent, Bulandshahr 60.52 per cent, Gautam Buddh Nagar 56.73 per cent, Ghaziabad 54.77 per cent, Hapur 60.50 per cent, Mathura 63.28 per cent,
Meerut 60.91 per cent, Muzaffarnagar 65.34 per cent and Shamli 69.42 per cent, an EC report said. During 2017 assembly elections, 63.47 per cent polling was recorded in these constituencies, the report said. The electoral fate of 623 candidates was sealed in this phase of the elections which covered the Jatdominated belt of western Uttar Pradesh. In 2017, BJP had bagged 53 of the 58 seats in the region, while SP and BSP had got two seats each. One seat had gone to RLD.
DIMAPUR, FEB 10 (NPN): The Naga Rising (TNR) has alleged that the parties had come together in the State to form an opposition-less coalition government in view of the forthcoming Assembly elections scheduled next year and not due to any interest in Naga political solution as claimed. Mentioning that the talk was now on merger of NPF and NDPP ahead of the elections, TNR in a statement cautioned that a new dangerous path of money power and political immorality was unfolding

real intention of the NDPPBJP-NPF government. TNR said even after the unceremonious formation of UDA with the oft-repeated slogan “to facilitate the Naga political issue”, the ground reality did not measure up with the tall claims about finding “one solution without any further delay”. Hence, in the interest of Naga public, the group demanded to know how the opposition-less government had contributed to taking forward the Naga peace process and where did it stand today.

in Nagaland, while asserting that people could not be fooled any longer. According to TNR, it was clear from day one what drove the formation of the opposition-less government, adding that the narrative marketed to the people on the Naga political issue by the parties, including NDPP, BJP and NPF, was unconvincing and deceptive. Since unity and solution were offered as the main reasons for the formation of the opposition-less UDA, the group declared that the people of Nagaland had the right to know the
KOHIMA, FEB 10 (NPN): To study the feasibility of transition in traffic management from traditional to modern, the Kohima Smart City Development Limited (KSCDL) in collaboration with Kohima village youth organisation and Kohima traffic police Thursday initiated a pilot test of traffic lights—automated traffic management system (ATMS)— at PHQ junction and TCP gate junction here as part of

Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), a smart city project. KSCDL senior IT consultant, Yanpvuo Kikon, said that the current response from the public
seemed confused, but added that with time they would be able to cope with the transition. He said that though people here do not have the habit of looking at traffic
lights while driving, they would get used to it with time and effort. After five-day test period, he said they would gather the data and improve the traffic management of Kohima. He said that traffic lights placed at Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) junction and High School junction required redesign since the placement done by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) was not visible, adding that the position required modification.
“These places are crucial and needed more study and monitoring from the team,” said KSCDL associate analyst Ketusezo Rote. ATMS are installed to modernize traffic management instead of traffic personnel regulating traffic rules all day long. By using this technology, KSCDL hopes to improve traffic management in Kohima. Monitoring it would also provide valuable insight and analysis to plan and further improve traffic management.
It also wanted to know what measure/s had been taken by the UDA government to bring Naga political groups together on a common platform towards one solution as desired by Naga people. It reminded that holding consultative meetings, setting up of committees and passing of Assembly resolutions done under the present set of political leadership had been going on for decades in Nagaland without the desired outcome. Also, contrary to the main objective of unity, solution and peace, TNR
warned that the UDA government’s decision regarding creation of new districts could create a situation that would threaten peaceful coexistence. Mentioning that boundary demarcation had the potential to leading to more divisions and trust deficit in the community, the group demanded that, in keeping with its motto of unity, the government must thoroughly explore all options through dialogue to find an amicable solution for peaceful co-existence of different communities. workers were returning home, the government did nothing,” the SP chief said. “I remember a pregnant woman had to deliver her child on the road. We would have sent the car of the district magistrate to take that woman home (if we had been in power). Had the government intervened, people wouldn’t have suffered so much,” Yadav said alleging Covid mismanagement by the Adityanath government. He accused the BJP of hiding the state’s true death toll due to Covid and highlighted how corpses were seen floating in the Ganga river during the pandemic. He also lashed out at the government over the protests at Delhi borders against the three farm laws. “We will make a memorial for farmers who lost their lives during the protest and provide Rs 25 lakh compensation to the families of those who died due to Covid,” he said.

‘Double engine’ govt brought double corruption in UP, says Akhilesh Yadav BIJNOR (UP), FEB 10 (PTI): Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday alleged that the “double engine” government has brought “double corruption” in Uttar Pradesh and promised to set up a corpus fund of Rs 10, 000 crore to ensure timely payment to farmers. “The double engine government in Uttar Pradesh has brought double corruption. Therefore, vote to remove corruption from the state so that baba ji (Adityanath) returns to his home after the results (of elections) are declared,” Yadav said while addressing a joint rally with alliance partner Jayant Chaudhary of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD). The term “double engine” is used by BJP leaders to refer to the party being in power at the Centre as well as in a state. Reaching out to the farmers of the region, Yadav said, “We will set up a corpus fund of Rs 10,000

Nagaland Post VOL. XXXII NO. 66 DIMAPUR, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2022
National political roadmap
I
n four out of five states that will go to polls in the coming election cycle, the BJP is the incumbent party, with the exception of Punjab. There is a war-like environment within the highest echelons of the BJP where hectic plan of actions are being unfolded as the BJP fights to seek another term in government in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, and Manipur. When election results are declared on the March 10, the interpretations of the BJP’s success or lack of in these elections, will not just be confined to these state-specific results. They will also answer questions about the BJP having faced increasingly strong political headwinds in most parts of the country since its thumping victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. All eyes are on the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, seen as a template for Lok Sabha 2024. Historically, state polls are an unreliable barometer of the national mood two years down the line. But UP could well throw up answers to intriguing questions about the shape of things to come. The outcome of the elections especially in Uttar Pradesh is considered very crucial for prime minister Narendra Modi. UP has 80 Lok Sabha seats, the highest among states in India and in 2019 the BJP won 62.Modi represents Varanasi since 2014. The BJP has used religion and communal divide to polarise voters and this has proved successful mainly because the opposition parties who together get around 60% of the votes to the BJP’s 30% , are hopelessly divided. The party is apparently counting on that divisive tactic to resonate in Uttar Pradesh, a bastion of the Hindu right, preserving its hold on power in the state and putting it in a favorable position for a general election in two years. Yogi Adityanath, an acolyte of Modi’s and a potential successor as prime minister, cast the election in terms of “80 versus 20” - a thinly veiled reference to the rough percentage of Hindus in the state compared with Muslims. If the Modi-Yogi combine scripts a convincing win, the UP CM could be a contender for the top job. The Samajwadi Party(SP) led by former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav is a serious contender to Yogi Adityanath. If he pulls it off, the Opposition could rally around him. Congress’ Priyanka Vadra has been hard at work and she battles an uphill task to convince voters of her ability to deliver though the Congress is only a fringe player in UP. While BJP seeks to polarise voters and the SP seeks to pander to caste politics; the Congress on the other hand, seeks to raise issues on women empowerment, employment etc. By dint of her consistency and hard work Priyanka has attracted admiration for her combative spirit. If she can improve the Congress vote share (6.25 per cent) and/or seat share (seven) even by a few percentage points, she will have reversed her party’s inexorable slide. The Congress rank-and-file, which in any case sees her as a natural-born leader, might then attempt to force a change at the top. UP could just be the big litmus test not only for Modi but for other non-BJP parties as the outcome could have a psychological impact for 2024.
DailyDevotion Is Your Ability to See God Blinded?
Lift up your eyes on high, and see who has created these things… —Isaiah 40:26
The people of God in Isaiah’s time had blinded their minds’ ability to see God by looking on the face of idols. But Isaiah made them look up at the heavens; that is, he made them begin to use their power to think and to visualize correctly. If we are children of God, we have a tremendous treasure in nature and will realize that it is holy and sacred. We will see God reaching out to us in every wind that blows, every sunrise and sunset, every cloud in the sky, every flower that blooms, and every leaf that fades, if we will only begin to use our blinded thinking to visualize it. The real test of spiritual focus is being able to bring your mind and thoughts under control. Is your mind focused on the face of an idol? Is the idol yourself? Is it your work? Is it your idea of what a servant should be, or maybe your experience of salvation and sanctification? If so, then your ability to see God is blinded. You will be powerless when faced with difficulties and will be forced to endure in darkness. If your power to see has been blinded, don’t look back on your own experiences, but look to God. It is God you need. Go beyond yourself and away from the faces of your idols and away from everything else that has been blinding your thinking. Wake up and accept the ridicule that Isaiah gave to his people, and deliberately turn your thoughts and your eyes to God. One of the reasons for our sense of futility in prayer is that we have lost our power to visualize. We can no longer even imagine putting ourselves deliberately before God. It is actually more important to be broken bread and poured-out wine in the area of intercession than in our personal contact with others. The power of visualization is what God gives a saint so that he can go beyond himself and be firmly placed into relationships he never before experienced.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science
T
he UN has adopted celebration of International Days as an effective tool for promotion of global awareness on issues of international importance. Gender equality and empowerment of women and girls are some of the core issues for the United Nations and on the 22nd of December 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution according to which 11th February has been declared as International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Some excerpts from the Resolution are as follows: Recognizing that women and girls play a critical role in science and technology communities and that their participation should be strengthened. To celebrate the scientific and technological community’s vital contribution to sustainable development, as well as supporting the empowerment, involvement, and contribution of women and girls in science, technology, and innovation; …………… Decides to proclaim 11 February of each year the International Day of Women and Girls in Science; Invites all Member States, all organizations and bodies of the United
M
Nations system and other international and regional organizations, the private sector and academia, as well as civil society, including non-governmental organizations and individuals, to observe the International Day of Women and Girls in Science in an appropriate manner, including through education and public awareness-raising activities, in order to promote the full and equal participation of women and girls in education, training, employment and decision-making processes in the sciences, eliminate all discrimination against women, including in the field of education and employment, and overcome legal, economic, social and cultural barriers thereto by, inter alia, encouraging the development of science education policies and programming, including school curricula, as appropriate, to encourage greater participation of women and girls, promote career development for women in science and recognize the achievements of women in science; Invites the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and UN-Women, mindful of the provisions contained in the annex to Economic and
Social Council resolution 1980/67, to work together to facilitate the implementation of the International Day in collaboration with all relevant organizations already involved in the promotion of women and girls in science… A day such as this, on which the importance of participation of women in science is globally celebrated gives the opportunity to analyse some of the typical challenges faced by women scientists and identify the solutions, so that women can fully participate and excel in scientific research. Whether it is the global or the Indian scenario, a significant gender gap has persisted over the years at all levels of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. It is an unfortunate reality that girls do not hesitate to pursue studies in sciences and they achieve high academic excellence, but thereafter, only few women are able to achieve professional excellence as scientists. Let us analyse why this happens. The research profession is globally competitive and requires high levels of involvement. Unfortunately, since this profession is somewhat elusive, the demands of
scientific research and the amount of professional dedication required are not well recognized and therefore do not receive much social sympathy. Just as an example, for any individual to pursue an independent research career, one has to have a PhD degree, and preferably have some post-doctoral research experience. This requires a total minimum period of 7-8 years after completing the masters’ programme. However, for women, this period usually coincides with the childbearing and nurturing period, and therefore there is a pressure to start a family at this same time. Thus there is a clash of professional requirements and personal or social expectations which are almost antagonistic to each other, not always due to discrimination, but also as a result of consequences. Women scientists sometimes become victims of a situation in which they are considered as less dedicated professionals at the workplace, and as selfish in the social space and in order to avoid this, many women scientists often have to lead lifetimes of secret ‘balancing acts’, trying to manage both home and profession. Dichotomy of demands and unnatural
expectations weigh heavily upon many and compounded with several other problems ultimately lead to a situation where there are a number of women who are trained towards scientific research but are often not in a position to join the profession, and even if they do, they are unable to excel. Continuous efforts are being made in India and worldover in order to improve the participation of women in scientific research. In India, policies have been introduced by the government through agencies such as the UGC, DST and DBT to help women pursue their scientific careers more effectively, through different women centric policies. With intense intervention both nationally and internationally, participation of women and girls in science may increase, but it is desired that women do not merely participate, but excel in scientific research. Unfortunately, policy intervention alone cannot lead to excellence. This requires attitudinal changes and beliefs so that women approach scientific research with an intention to excel. So, what do girls who approach a career in scientific research need, in order
to excel professionally? One suggestion could be a conscious and collective effort to train young girls to accept and anticipate both professional as well as familial requirements of the future so that they are not unprepared for life’s challenges. Discussions and deliberations on career planning and management should be realistic, explaining that personal life and career are not mutually exclusive. Navigating a personal life is as challenging and difficult as a professional career and learning of necessary skills is important. Again, a successful career in scientific research is much more than good academic training and requires independent thinking capacity, good leadership qualities and networking skills. Therefore, necessary personality traits need to be identified and developed. When life is seen as a whole and different aspects of life are seen as a continuum, then a career in scientific research will not seem as daunting and each girl in science will feel excited to be a woman in science. Vigilance on Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs)
any of us might have experienced certain appreciably unpleasant or harmful reactions while or after being on certain medications of one or more classes of drugs to treat various forms of pain or disease conditions. These unwanted effects usually occur in the form of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, sedation, loss of appetite, peptic ulcer, etc. But this is not the end of the list of unwanted effects! These effects at times may lead to hospitalization or at worse cases may take the life of the patient. Some of the life threatening adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are anaphylactic shock, kidney failure, liver dysfunction, haemolysis, arrhythmia, hypoglycemia, hypotension etc. As per reports from across the globe, ADRs approximately account for ≥5% of all hospital admissions. The unwanted effects that we encounter while on medications may be due to side effect of the drug or other adverse drug reactions. Side effects are predictable and usually not serious and are generally associated with the pharmacological profile of the drug and dose-dependent (increasing dose of a drug increases the side effect). For instance, codeine commonly used as a cough suppressant (antitussive) produces constipation as a common side effect. However, adverse drug reactions may either be predictable or unpredictable and are often more serious than side effects. Broadly, the definition of ADRs also includes reactions occurring as a result of error, misuse or abuse, and to any suspected reactions to medicine/medicinal products at normal doses. Patients are mainly unaware of the limitations of the premarketing phase of drug development in defining relatively common risks of new drugs. Only a few
thousand patients are exposed to new experimental drugs in more or less well controlled and well-defined environment during drug development. Therefore, adverse drug effects that occur as frequently as just 1 in 1000 patients may not be detected prior to marketing of the drug. Additionally, it is well known that a population risk of 1 in 1000 patients is not distributed evenly across populations in different geographical areas; some patients because of their certain unique genetic makeup or environmental factors, are at an extremely high risk, while other population may be at low or no risk at all. Hence, post marketing surveillance (PMS) which is the practice of monitoring for any adverse drug reactions post clinical trial of a drug after it has been released on the market is imperative to detect infrequent adverse drug effects. This is a very crucial practice as limited information on rare ADRs are available for the safety and efficacy evaluation of any new medicinal products through the processes in clinical trial phase. Therefore, understanding of any effects associated with use of medicines and more specifically for those medicines which we get direct access from a pharmacy without medical prescription (over-the-counter drugs) such as analgesics/ painkillers, antidiarrhoeals, anti-allergy, and even antibiotics (mainly during COVID pandemic) etc., is crucial to minimize unnecessary exposure to the drugs to reduce the extent of damage to the body, if any ADRs occur, and also to avoid exposure to the same drug in the future. Unfortunately, there is no way to completely avoid all types of ADRs because the drug alone is not the sole determinant of the ADRs but multiple factors are also involved. Among the many factors
which contribute to ADRs, genetic diversity (differences in genetic makeup between individuals), physiological and pathological conditions of the individual (like pre- existing diseases), environmental factors which include fooddrug interactions or drug-drug interaction, etc. are significant notable factors. One easy way to reduce the incidence of ADRs at an individual level is avoiding selfmedication and maintaining of high level compliance to prescription (meaning correctly following as per medical prescription). As per a report, only about 50% of patients follow the prescribed dosage regimen in reasonably satisfactory fashion; and 1 in 6 patients is noncompliant. Of course, missed doses are more common than too many doses. Furthermore, continuing of any medication beyond the prescribed period may not be safe and is to be avoided as far as possible. In the event of a need to continue treatment, it is prudent to consult a physician so as to avoid further unnecessary exposure to the same medicine. As for instance, consumption of commonly available painkillers- Non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for an extended period of time to manage chronic pain and fever often lead to chronic renal failure (kidney failure), liver damage and most commonly development of stomach/peptic ulcer. Such unwanted effects associated with painkillers in human are not an exception in veterinary medicine. Cases are being reported with owners of animals inadvertently using painkillers in an inappropriately higher dose or for a prolonged period of time without complying with the prescribed dosage regimen provided by the veterinarian. The dose of a drug differs from species
to species in animals, which is mainly attributed to differences in their body size as well as their genetic makeup. Certain classes of drugs are found to be highly sensitive and prone to toxicity in some species of animals. As an example, cats are prone to ADRs and toxicity with drugs such as paracetamol and other NSAIDs, morphine, diazepam, pentobaritone, chloramphenicol, etc. Deficiency of certain drug metabolizing enzymes (mainly enzymes involved in glucoronidation of drugs) found in liver of cats as compared to other species of animals is mainly responsible for many ADRs in this species. It is advised not to extrapolate and use dose of a drug prescribed for a dog to a cat or vice versa for the aforementioned reason. Thus, veterinarians takes utmost precautions to avoid ADRs and toxicity while administering certain drugs in sensitive species by making appropriate adjustment in dosage regimen, which may be in the form of reduction of dose or using an alternate drugs. ADRs can occur following administration of any class of medicines. However, our emphasis in this article is mainly on ADRs associated with the use of NSAIDs. This class of drug is one of the most widely used drugs in human and animals. NSAIDs like ibuprofen, aspirin, diclofenac, etc., with the exception of paracetamol, even though these are important and commonly prescribed, can irritate the stomach lining and often produce peptic ulcer and even perforation of gastric mucosa in serious cases, if not treated on time. The main reason being that their actions are not target specific. These drugs not only reduce pain, fever and inflammation, but also reduce the level of vital biochemicals –such
as prostanoids in the stomach which are essential for protection of the gastric mucosa against gastric acid secretions. Taking such medicines after food is a simple and good way to reduce the chance of development of peptic ulcer by avoiding direct contact of the drug with stomach wall. An article published in the Daily Mail on 8th February 2020 entitled “Heart disease alert over the long-term use of paracetamol” clearly mentioned the increased risk of heart attack and stroke by 20% in human as a consequence of increased blood pressure associated with the use of paracetamol and other NSAIDs. Chronic renal failure associated with the prolonged use of NSAIDs results in reduced blood flow to kidney due to reduced prostaglandins synthesis leading to reduced kidney function (reduced glomerular filtration rate) and ultimately chronic renal failure. There are many novel classes of painkiller that are comparatively less likely to produce such unwanted adverse effects and can be used for longer period. Undergoing regular blood biochemical tests to determine any damage to kidney, liver and other organs are highly recommended in case of prolong medication with any class of drug. Overall the main focus of this short article on ADRs is to enlighten the importance of maintaining a high level of compliance to prescription so as to prevent or reduce the risk of development of any potentially harmful or unpleasant reactions associated with medications. NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2022
warns students applying for MBBS No religious symbols for now, says K’taka HC NMC programmes in Chinese universities
BENGALURU, FEB 10 (IANS): The Karnataka High Court, hearing the hijab row, on Thursday ordered that no religious symbols are allowed for the students until its final order, thus ruling out use of both hijab and saffron shawls in school and college premises. The interim order was given by a three-judge bench of Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Justice Krishna S. Dixit, and Justice Khaji Jaibunnesa Mohiyuddin. “We want to make an interim order on the matter of hijab row. We will hear the matter every day,” the Chief Justice stated. Peace has to return to the state, and schools and colleges must open soon, the bench said, adjourning the matter to Monday. Earlier, while hearing the arguments, the Chief Justice told Advocate General Prabhuling Navadagi to open schools in the state. “Closure of schools is not a good development. Take necessary action and conduct classes. See to it that no problem surfaces,”
Police personnnel in Bengaluru guard the Karnataka High Court amid unrest in colleges across the state.
he stated. Amid tensions, the state government on Tuesday announced a three-day holiday for schools and colleges. During the hearing, senior counsel Sanjay Hegde, appearing for a petitioner, submitted that the Karnataka government has no right to frame rules on uniform, as per the 1983 Karnataka Education Act. The rules on uniform could be framed by the the College Development Committee (CDC) and School Development and Manage-
ment Committee (SDMC), he maintained. “How judicious it is to force prohibitions for the reason of hijab... if prohibitions are clamped for the public interest, it is tenable. The medical student was allowed to write examinations wearing hijab in 2015 as per the court orders. Wearing of dress comes under Article 19 (1) of the Constitution. The Supreme Court decision in the Divya Yadav case discussed the right to wear dresses of their choice,” he said. As per Article 25 (1),
wearing of hijab is a religious right. Sikhs are permitted to carry a dagger and are given exemptions from wearing helmets, he added. “The girl students can’t be made to sit on roads. Karnataka state contributes highest taxes to the Central government. Most startups come up here and these developments will bring disrepute to the state. Discrimination should not be made on the basis of clothes, colour, and religion,” the counsel argued. The petitioners arguing for hijab stated that there is no harm in students wearing it. Hijab is a fundamental right and it does not cause any problem to others, and so, they should be allowed to wear hijab of the same colour as their uniform, they said, arguing that the government has issued circular on uniform “hurriedly”. The petitioners further stated that the bench should give an interim order on the issue in the students’ interests as students are outside schools. They also argued that as per the Karnataka
Education Act, uniform is not compulsory for students and they only be fined Rs 25 for violating the uniform rules. As Chief Justice Awasthi intervened here, asking whether the petitioner is saying uniform is not required, the petitioner submitted that as per act, it is not compulsory. It is okay for primary school students but uniforms for college students is being objected, he said. Navadagi, however, opposed issue of an interim order on the issue and stated that there are various developments surrounding the issue. Earlier, the single bench headed by Justice Dixit, which heard the matter, which has snowballed into a major crisis in the state and discussed at international levels, decided the matter to be heard by the larger bench. It directed the High Court Registrar to submit the documents and petitions immediately to the Chief Justice as the matter is of utmost importance and needs to be heard urgently.
NEW DELHI, FEN 10 (AGENCIES): Taking cognisance of some Chinese universities issuing notices for admission to MBBS programmes for the current and upcoming academic years, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has warned prospective students applying for such programmes in the neighbouring country to do adequate checks, and be aware that China continues to impose strict travel restrictions in the wake of Covid-19, a TOI report stated. The Commission - that oversees medical education in the country - also clarified that NMC does not recognise online medical courses, even though Chinese authorities have conveyed earlier that courses will be conducted online. “As per the extant rules, the National Medical Commission does not recognise or approve medical courses done only by online mode,” the Commission’s secretary Sandhya Bhullar said in an official notice, indicating
that any student deciding to pursue such online MBBS courses from China may not be able to practise in India. The Commission advised students to refer to FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduates Examination) Regulations before applying or planning to seek admission in any foreign institutions including China. Besides, students were advised to exercise due diligence in choosing where to pursue medical education from. In the official notice dated February 8, 2022, the NMC said that the External Affairs Ministry noticed that some universities in People’s
Republic of China had started issuing notices for MBBS admission for the current and upcoming academic years. “In this context, any prospective student needs to be aware that the Government of People’s Republic of China has imposed strict travel restrictions in the wake of Covid-19 and suspended all visas since November 2020,” Bhullar. A large number of international as well as Indian students had not been able to return to China to continue their studies due to these restrictions. Thus far, there had been no relaxation in the restrictions, she added.

Priyanka Gandhi asked while addressing a poll programme in Rampur. “Today that man has got bail and soon, he would be roaming around openly, the man who mowed you down. But whom did the government save? Did it save the farmers? Where were the police and the administration when farmers were killed?” she asked. The Congress general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh claimed that police were nowhere to be seen at the time of the Lakhimpur Kheri incident but were present to prevent the Congress members who tried to visit the families of the victims and posed no harm to anyone.
NEW DELHI, FEB 10 (IANS): India’s first homegrown Messenger RNA (mRNA) Covid19 vaccine, being developed by Punebased Gennova Biopharmaceuticals, is currently under final clinical trials, NITI Aayog’s Member, Health, Dr V.K. Paul, said on Thursday. Briefing the media, he said that they are hopeful that they will be able to use this vaccine soon. “We need mRNA platform because it has shown that vaccines developed on this platform, at least for Covid-19, have been effective worldwide,” said Paul, adding that beyond Covid, this platform will continue to be important as an option for future for other diseases also for which vaccines have
been elusive. He termed it as an great development. Indian Council of Medical Research Director General, Dr Balram Bhargava, said that this is another vaccine which really establishes that India is heading towards becoming a vaccine superpower. “Because large parts of the population are vaccinated, we are not seeing the disastrous third Covid surge in terms of hospitalisations and mortality,” he said. About the ongoing pandemic situation, Dr Paul said that the world had learned a great deal about pandemic and the virus, but doesn’t know everything. The world should remain united to fight this virus and should continue to use the tools that are at our disposal, he added.

Petrol bombs hurled at Tamil Nadu BJP Headquarters
Visuals from BJP headquarters in Chennai.
Nagapattinam, a car of an office-bearer was burnt and offices set up to coordinate urban civic polls related work were vandalised in Chennai, Tirupur and Vellore. Such attacks showed a clear pattern and a larger criminal conspiracy as well, he claimed. The police citing the test row as the motive hence cannot be accepted, he said and alleged that police ‘cleaned’ the evidence. FIR was ‘not filed’ and none from the forensic wing collected materials for examination, the BJP leader alleged. He wondered
‘why water was poured’ on evidence related things and taken away by police. A proper examination and probe vis-a-vis the scene of crime should be done rather than stating that it was an act by a Goonda to show his opposition to the party’s stand on NEET, he said. “This is like a film dialogue. The BJP demands NIA probe and the anti-national forces and fundamentalists should be brought to book, whoever they may be. NIA probe is the only solution and only that would prevent recurrence of such
PM blames others as he has no answers for unemployment, China: Maharastra Cong MUMBAI, FEB 10 (PTI): The Congress in Maharashtra on Thursday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was blaming others as he has no solutions on issues like rising unemployment and the threat from China. Reacting to state Congress general secretary Sachin Sawant’s tirade against Modi, the BJP said it was out of frustration. M o d i o n M o n d ay lashed out at Congress in the Lok Sabha, alleging that
the party scared migrant labourers into fleeing to their states during the first lockdown after the coronavirus pandemic began. He also targeted the party over issues such as the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and Emergency. “For the past three days, the country is witnessing artifices and attempts of the most incompetent PM to blame others for his failures,” Congress leader Sawant said in a statement here.
“He has no answers for: rising unemployment and inflation, dwindling economy, drop in the income of 84 per cent of people, Chinese threat, and so on,” he added. Modi claimed that the Centre had to declare lockdown as the states had done so, but an RTI query has revealed that the prime minister had announced the imposition of restrictions without consulting any ministry, Sawant alleged.

incidents. The Tamil Nadu government should hand over the case to the NIA.” In the early hours, after setting fire to three bottles filled with petrol, the man in his thirties threw them at the BJP state headquarters. The man, a known history-sheeter, arrived on a two-wheeler and quickly fled the spot after hurling the bottles at the entrance area of the party office. Police was alerted immediately and a team of officials inspected the spot and CCTV cameras were scrutinised. The BJP HQ is located in downtown T Nagar. It was found that the miscreant was 38-year old Vinoth alias ‘Karukka’ Vinoth, who faces a bunch of criminal cases including attempts to murder and he was arrested, a city police release said. According to a preliminary probe, there is no political or religious aspect to this attack and Vinoth has a history of carrying out such attacks, under the influence of alcohol, in matters of public interest.

CHENNAI, FEB 10 (PTI): Seeking to show his ‘opposition’ to the BJP’s pro-NEET stand, a 38-year old man on Thursday hurled petrol ‘bombs’ at the Tamil Nadu headquarters of the BJP here, police said. Demanding a National Investigation Agency probe, the state unit of the BJP dismissed as a ‘film dialogue’, the police tagging the test issue being the likely motive. Anti-national forces and fundamentalists should be arrested, the Saffron party TN president, K Annamalai told reporters here condemning the attack. He demanded that the ruling DMK do ‘self-introspection’ and he alleged deterioration of law and order in the state. The attack on his party office is only a continuation of an increase in violence and other crimes, he alleged. The BJP chief underscored a ‘pattern’ by listing out crimes targeted at party functionaries and offices in other places of the state since February 9 evening. Annamalai said that in

Oppn-less govt not for Naga political solution...
(From p-1) The organisation recalled issuing a statement earlier expressing concern that Nagaland under an opposition-less UDA could witness an absolute and autocratic government, one that enjoyed power without responsibility with unfettered control over resources and decision making. Stating that the convenience of having the opposition-less government could not be missed, TNR called upon the people to wake up from deep slumber, adding that it was time to come together and rise up to the challenge. It also prayed to God to give people courage and wisdom to rebuild Nagaland.

Invoking the historical ‘tulip mania’, Das said the investors need to keep in mind that there is no value for cryptocurrencies. “They (investors) also need to keep in mind that the cryptocurrency has no underlying, not even a tulip,” he noted. The ‘tulip mania’ of the 17th century is often cited as a classic example of a financial bubble where the price of something goes up, not due to its intrinsic value but because of speculators wanting to make a profit by selling a bulb of the exotic flower.

(From p-1) Swu said that while the government was yet to resolve the pending inter-district boundary issue between Dimapur and Peren, the motive for creating new districts without even properly demarcating earlier district borders was questionable. He urged chief minister Neiphiu Rio to look into the concerns of the 45 villages, irrespective of the decision taken in the State cabinet. Also speaking on the occasion, JCCV convener and ATKK president LK Swu exhorted the gathering not to give up the fight till the government revoked its decision to shift Dhansiripar sub-division from Dimapur to Chümoukedima. He alleged that the decision was taken without taking into considerations the opinion of citizens. He claimed that past chief ministers had never spoken of “traditional lands”, and wondered why the incumbent was so much focused on it. Short speeches were also delivered by Dimasa GBs’ Union president Pizu Langthasa, JCCV co-convener and Tsithrongse Village head GB Tsithrongse Sangtam and Dimasa Public Organisation Nagaland general secretary P Monuhar Thaosen, while vote of thanks was delivered by JCCV secretary Devendra Rana.

“Airlines (will) allow boarding (of) only those passengers who have filled in all the information in the self-declaration form... and uploaded the negative RT-PCR test report or COVID-19 vaccination certificate...” the Health Ministry has said. Only asymptomatic passengers will be allowed to board, and Covidappropriate behaviour, including the use of face masks and practicing of social distancing, must be followed during the flight. On arrival, in addition to thermal screening, passengers selected at random (up to two per cent of total passengers per flight) will be asked to undergo RT-PCR tests. Passengers will be selected by the airline and must “preferably” be from different countries. Passengers found to be symptomatic will be immediately quarantined and tested, with contact tracing carried out if they are found to be Covid-positive. All other passengers must self-monitor for 14 days for any Covid symptoms, the Health Ministry said.

The latest comments from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor are also a reiteration of institutional concerns on crypto assets. “Private cryptocurrencies or whatever name you call it are a threat to our macroeconomic stability and financial stability. They will undermine RBI’s ability to deal with issues of financial stability and macroeconomic stability,” Das told reporters. RBI has been repeatedly flagging its concerns on such instruments and had banned the banking system from aiding such trades, which was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2020. (From p-1) The ministry stressed the “need to monitor the continuously changing” COVID-19 virus but also acknowledged that “economic activities need to be taken up in an unhindered manner”. According to the new guidelines, all foreign arrivals must fill a self-declaration form online (available at the Air Suvidha web portal), including a travel history of the past 14 days. They must also upload a negative RT-PCR test that was conducted within 72 hours of the travel date. Alternatively, they can also upload a certificate confirming they have received both vaccine doses. This option, however, is only available for passengers arriving from 72 countries whose vaccination programmes the Indian government recognises as part of a reciprocal programme. These countries include Canada, Hong Kong, the United States, the United Kingdom, Bahrain, Qatar, Australia, New Zealand, and some European nations.
MUMBAI, FEB 10 (PTI): Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das on Thursday said cryptocurrencies are a “threat to macroeconomic and financial stability” and cautioned investors against punting on them, days after the Union government’s move to tax the gains made from cryptocurrency trades. In the Union Budget for 2022-23 presented in Parliament on February 1, the government proposed levying a 30 per cent tax on gains made on cryptocurrency trades by investors and the announcement was welcomed by cryptocurrency industry players, saying it legitimises their trades. Das invoked the 17th centur y ‘tulip mania’, widely considered to be the first financial bubble, to caution investors, say-

vate consumption is still lagging. Global headwinds are accentuating. “Overall, taking into consideration the outlook for inflation and growth, in particular the comfort provided by the improving inflation outlook, the uncertainties related to Omicron and global spillovers, the MPC was of the view that continued policy support is warranted for a durable and broad-based recovery,” Das said. Giving a quarterly projection for FY23 on retail inflation, RBI expects it to be at 4.9 per cent in Q1FY23; 5 per cent in the second quarter; 4 per cent in the third and at 4.2 per cent in the last quarter, with risks broadly balanced. The Reserve Bank has also retained the overall CPI projection for the current fiscal year to be ending on March 31, 2022 at 5.3 per cent. The ongoing Q4 of 2021-22 is expected to settle with an inflation rate of 5.7 per cent, mainly on account of unfavourable base effects that ease subsequently.

Committee, Das said the MPC also noted that the consumer price inflation has edged higher since the last meeting (in December), but largely along the anticipated lines. “The increase in inflation in December was entirely due to an unfavourable base effect despite month-on-month decline in prices. Large buffer stocks of cereals and effective supply side measures augur well for food inflation. Core inflation remains elevated but demand pull pressures are still muted. The renewed surge in international crude oil prices however needs to be closely monitored,” the Governor said in his statement. RBI expects the headline inflation to peak during the current quarter of this fiscal within the tolerance band and then moderate closer to target in the second half of next fiscal year (H2:2022-23). Shaktikanta Das RBI keeps a close watch on CPI inflation to decide on its bi-monthly monetary policy. Retail inflation rose to a five-month high of 5.59 per cent in December, from 4.91 per cent in November, mainly due to an uptick in food prices. MPC has been given the mandate to maintain annual inflation at 4 per cent until March 31, 2026, with an upper tolerance of 6 per cent and a lower tolerance of 2 per cent. The Reser ve Bank has kept its key repo rate -- at which it lends shortterm money to banks -- unchanged for the 10th time in a row at 4 per cent, to support growth as well as
manage the inflationary pressures. “The transmission of input cost pressures to selling prices remains muted in view of the continuing slack in demand. Further as risks from Omicron (virus) wanes and supply-chain pressures moderate, there could be some softening of core inflation. “On balance, the inflation projection for 2021-22 is retained at 5.3 per cent, with Q4, that is the current quarter at 5.7 per cent on account of unfavourable base effect that eased subsequently,” Das said. Das further noted that CPI reading for January 2022, is expected to move closer to the upper tolerance band, largely due to adverse base effects. “Taking all these factors into consideration along with the assumption of a normal monsoon, CPI inflation for 2022-23, is projected at 4.5 per cent,” Das said. DP-663/22
MUMBAI, FEB 10 (PTI): The Reserve Bank of India on Thursday said inflation based on consumer price index (CPI) is expected to come well below its upper tolerance level, at 4.5 per cent, in the next fiscal year beginning April 2022, helped by fresh crop arrivals, supply-side interventions, as well as prospects of a good monsoon. However, the hardening of crude oil prices presents a major upside risk to the inflation outlook. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) retained its inflation projection at 5.3 per cent for the current financial year. Unveiling the last monetary policy for the current fiscal year, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said, core inflation remains elevated at tolerance-testing levels. Although the continuing pass through of tax cuts relating to petrol and diesel last November, would help to moderate the input cost pressures to some extent, he said.

‘Victims of 26/11, Pathankot attacks to get justice’
UNITED NATIONS, FEB 10 (PTI): India has long borne the brunt of crossborder terrorism, with victims of the “dastardly” 2008 Mumbai terror attack and the 2016 Pathankot terror act, perpetrated by Pakistanbased terror groups, yet to get justice, New Delhi’s envoy here has told the UN Security Council. Speaking in the Security Council briefing on ‘Threat to International Peace & Security Caused by Terrorist Acts’ on Wednesday, Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador TS Tirumurti reiterated India’s firm belief that terrorism in one part of the world is threat to peace and security of entire world. He said that as a country that has long borne the brunt of cross-border terrorism, including the 2008 Mumbai terror attack and the 2016 Pathankot terror act, with victims of both these dastardly acts yet to get justice, “India is acutely aware of the human cost of terrorism and remains fully committed to bringing the perpetrators of these terror attacks to justice.”
TS Tirumurti
While condemning terror attacks, “our response should be unified, and unequivocal. We should not forget the fact that, even after 20 years of September 11 attacks, we have leaders who, without any remorse, continue to defend Osama Bin Laden as a martyr,” he said. Tirumurti was making a reference to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, who had called the slain Al Qaeda chief a martyr. Terrorists of Pakistanbased outfits Lashkar-eTayyiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) had carried out the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and the January 2016 Pathankot airbase attack. At the briefing, which took up Secretary General
Antonio Guterres’ 14th Report on Threat Posed by ISIL/Da’esh, Tirumurti expressed heartfelt condolences to all the families of victims who lost their loved ones in recent terror attacks in Afghanistan, UAE, Iraq, Syria, Congo and Uganda. Tirumurti further told the Council that terrorism impacts everyone, irrespective of the place or origin. “Unfortunately, it took us decades and then September 11 attacks, to come out of a flawed mindset of treating terrorism based on motivations behind terror acts,” he said. He added that Security Council resolution 1566 of 2004 notes that terrorist acts are under no circumstances justifiable by considerations of a political, philosophical, ideological, racial, ethnic, religious or other similar nature. The resolution further underlines that terrorism seriously impairs the enjoyment of human rights and threatens social and economic development of all nations. “It is essential that we keep this in mind as we look
Blinken says century will be shaped by Indo-Pacfic region CANBERRA, FEB 10 (AP): The United States remains focused long-term on the Indo-Pacific region despite concerns over Russian aggression toward the Ukraine, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Thursday. Blinken is in the Australian city of Melbourne for a meeting on Friday with his counterparts from Australia, India and Japan. The four nations form the so-called “Quad,” a bloc of Indo-Pacific democracies that was created to counter China’s regional influence. “There are a few other things going on in the world right now, some of you may have noticed. We have a bit of a challenge with Ukraine and Russian aggression. We’re working 24/7 on that,” Blinken said in his first public address since arriving in Australia on Wednesday. “But we know, the president knows better than anyone else, that so much of this century is going to be shaped by what happens here in the Indo-Pacific region,” he added. The Indo-Pacific is the fastest growing region in the world, accounting for twothirds of global economic growth over the past five years and home to half the

world’s population, Blinken said. What matters in the region matters around the world and challenges like climate change and COVID-19 can’t be tackled by any nation alone, he said. “More than ever before, we need partnerships, we need alliances, we need coalitions of countries willing to put their efforts, their resources, their minds into tackling these problems,” Blinken said. “What really drives us is a shared vision” of a “free and open society,” he added. Blinken’s trip is designed to reinforce America’s interests in Asia and its intent to push back against increasing Chinese assertiveness in the region. He will also visit Fiji and discuss pressing concerns about North Korea with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts in Hawaii. Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne, who will chair the Quad meet-
ing, said the agenda would include COVID-19 vaccine distribution, cyber and critical technologies, countering malicious and dangerous disinformation, terrorism, maritime security and climate change. India will be represented by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Japan by Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa. “As a network of liberal democracies, we are committed to very practical cooperation and ensuring that all Indo-Pacific nations – large and small – are able to make their own strategic decisions and make those decisions free from coercion,” Payne said. In Beijing on Wednesday, Foreign Ministr y spokesperson Zhao Lijian responded to a question about Blinken’s visit with a lengthy attack on American democracy and a defense of China’s contributions to the global order. “With its so-called democracy having collapsed long ago, the U.S. is forcing other countries to accept the standards of the American democracy, drawing lines with democratic values and piecing together cliques. That is a complete betrayal of democracy,” Zhao told reporters.
to further strengthen our counter terror architecture,” Tirumurti said. He voiced concern that today the terrorists’ use of ICT, social media, emerging technologies such as new digital payment methods, encrypted messaging services, cryptocurrencies, crowdfunding platforms and Unmanned Aircraft Systems pose a “dynamic threat” for which most of the member states do not have adequate response capabilities. “We have recently witnessed terror attacks through drones in our neighbourhood and now in UAE and Saudi Arabia, which have been condemned strongly by the Security Council. The recent Council resolution 2617 takes note of this threat posed by Unmanned Aircraft Systems. We need to work together to develop appropriate solutions and evolve global standards to address these threats,” he said. In June last year, two drones dropped explosive material on the Indian Air Force station located at Jammu airport, injuring two personnel.
UN dispatch aid as avalanches kill 17 in Afghanistan KABUL, FEB 10 (IANS): The UN, its partners and local authorities in Afghanistan have dispatched aid teams after 17 people were reportedly killed in heavy snowfall and avalanches. The partners sent two mobile health teams to the Kunar province site in Dangam district to aid local communities and search and rescue personnel following the Sunday disaster, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said. Many more people were reported missing, reports Xinhua news agency. The OCHA and its partner agencies also provide cash, non-food items, shelter kits and warm clothes to almost 2,000 people impacted by recent rain and snowfall in Kunar, Nangarhar and Laghman provinces. Humanitarians are continuing their work across several other parts of Afghanistan, with 60,000 people receiving food or cash assistance and relief items, OCHA said. The current Humanitarian Response Plan targets just over 22 million people and requires $4.4 billion but is only 9 per cent funded.

It will be able to participate in border security and anti-terror operations, take part in securing mass public events, perform maritime search and rescue, commercial aviation and environmental inspection missions, as well as precision agriculture work.

WELLINGTON, FEB 10 (IANS): The New Zealand police have arrested dozens of people as they faced off with anti-vaccine mandate protesters who were camping on the grounds of the nation’s Parliament. Thursday was the third day that hundreds of protesters have stayed in front of the parliament and refused to leave, with abuses, objects-hurling and scuffles to the police officers, reports Xinhua news agency. More than 100 police officers were deployed to assist in the operation, and people were warned not to go to the area as it could cause traffic disruptions. Inspired by protests in Canada, hundreds of people gathered in Wellington from Tuesday to protest against vaccine mandate and mask using policies. They blocked the streets outside Parliament building with trucks and campers. Epidemiologists said the protest has risks of becoming a Covid-19 superspread event.

The Ukrainian forces, whose numbers have not been disclosed, are set to use Bayraktar drones and antitank Javelin and NLAW missiles provided by foreign partners. Kyiv was due to receive a further shipment of U.S. military aid later on Thursday. Despite the tension over the war games, the Kremlin’s point man on Ukraine, Dmitry Kozak, was set to meet officials from Ukraine, Germany and France in Berlin for the latest talks on the conflict in eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said the talks would be important and that he hoped they could get a Trilateral Contact Group on the conflict in east Ukraine functioning again. The group includes Russia, Ukraine and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, a security watchdog.

The EU said on Thursday it had delivered a single letter in response to Russia’s proposals to member states on European security on behalf of the 27 foreign ministers of the bloc. NATO and the United States have already portrayed Russia’s main demands as non-starters. Stoltenberg said last week that Russia was expected to have 30,000 troops in Belarus as well as Spetsnaz special operations forces, SU-35 fighter jets, S-400 air defence systems and nuclear-capable Iskander missiles. After the initial phase of the joint drills was announced last month, Russia held a briefing for military attachés that lasted eight minutes and gave notice of an exercise that was already under way, a senior U.S. state department official said. “That’s highly inconsistent with agreements for transparency for large mili-

And I think that the combination of sanctions and military resolve, plus diplomacy is what is in order.” Stoltenberg also said it was a dangerous moment for European security, adding: “The number of Russian forces is going up. BRUSSELS/MOSCOW, FEB 10 (AGENCIES): Britain said on Thursday the West could face the “most dangerous moment” in its standoff with Moscow in the next few days, as Russia held military exercises in Belarus and the Black Sea following its troop buildup near Ukraine. Tensions remained high, with Ukraine also staging war games, but leaders on all sides signalled they hoped diplomacy could still prevail in what British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called Europe’s biggest security crisis for decades. In a new round of diplomacy, Britain’s foreign minister held talks in Russia, Johnson visited NATO headquarters in Brussels and officials from Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France were due to meet in Berlin to discuss fighting between government forces and pro-Russia separatists in eastern Ukraine since 2014. Russia, which has more than 100,000 troops near Ukraine’s borders, denies Western accusations that it may be planning to invade its former Soviet

omedian and actor Bob Saget, who was found dead in an Orlando, Florida, hotel room last month at age 65, died from head trauma after accidentally hitting his head, his family said on Wednesday. Saget, best known as the jovial dad on the television sitcom “Full House,” most likely hit the back of his head and “thought nothing of it and went to sleep,” his family said in a statement to Reuters. No drugs or alcohol were involved. “As we continue to mourn together, we ask everyone to remember the love and laughter that Bob brought to this world, and the lessons he taught us all,” the family added. These included being kind to everyone, letting the people you love know you love them, and facing difficult times with hugs and laughter, they said. Emergency responders
found the actor unresponsive on Jan. 9 in a room at the Ritz-Carlton in Orlando and pronounced him dead at the scene, the Orange County sheriff ’s office said at the time. Saget had just started a comedy tour and performed near the city of Jacksonville the night before. In his last Instagram post, he reflected on the “really nice audience” and “lots of positivity.” He wrote, “I guess I’m finding my new voice and loving every moment of it.” Saget played widowed father Danny Tanner on “Full House” from 1987 to 1995, and also on a sequel called “Fuller House” from 2016 to 2020. In the show, Tanner shared his home with his three daughters, his brother-in-law and best friend. The actor also hosted “America’s Funniest Home Videos” from 1989 to 1997. (Reuters)

d Sheeran has revealed that he’s set to enter the studio with Bring Me The Horizon. On Tuesday night (February 8), Sheeran teamed up with the metal group for a reworked version of his 2021 track ‘Bad Habits’ to open the BRIT Awards 2022. Speaking to The Daily Star (via The List), Sheeran said that getting to perform with Bring Me The Horizon was “a dream” and they’re now “going to write a song together”. “I got in touch with [Oli Sykes] and we were going to write together but then the pandemic happened, so we were in touch – I’ve been a fan for a long time,” he said. “Oddly enough, that’s the kind of music I grew up listening to.” Elsewhere in the interview, Sheeran said: “’Bad Habits’ would be a bit of a wet fart if I was just going up there [at the BRITs] and playing it normally. The song is EDM, and [Bring Me The Horizon have] took it and made it a whole new thing. I was just like, ‘You know what, these guitars are going to be great’.” “It was a week’s turnaround – we emailed each other two weeks ago, recorded it a week ago and rehearsed it three days ago,” continued the pop star,
seemingly confirming that a studio recording of the track exists. It’s not the first time that Sheeran has spoken about a heavy metal collaboration either. Cradle Of Filth’s Dani Filth hinted at a future collaboration with the singer after Sheeran revealed that he was “really into death metal as a kid”. “I think the Ed Sheeran collaboration would be great fun,” said Filth. “I think it’d be great if we did it for charity because at least it would bring a bit of credibility to it. Because obviously to his public, it’d be like ‘Oh my god, he’s got this weird comical guy’, and to my public, it’d be like ‘Oh my god, this is a bit weird, isn’t it?’ But I think that sort of thing, nowadays, works.” Bring Me The Horizon will perform the closing set at the BandLab NME Awards 2022. The wildest night in music will return to London’s O2 Academy Brixton on Wednesday, March 2 to celebrate the best in music and entertainment from around the globe. Tickets to the event are on sale now and available here. “To be honest we’re surprised we’ve even been asked back at all!” said Sykes. “What a huge honour it is to be asked to close the prestigious NME Awards show, we’re literally buzzing.” (NME)

irector Manu Anand’s eagerly awaited act i o n thriller, ‘FIR’, featuring actors Vishnu Vishal, Manjima Mohan, Raiza Wilson and Reba Monica John in the lead, has been banned in Malaysia, Kuwait and Qatar. The film, which is to hit screens on February 11, has triggered huge expectations. Actor Vishnu Vishal, who is also the producer of the film, retweeted a tweet put out by OTT Global that read, “#FIR banned in Malaysia, Kuwait and Qatar.” The actor and producer also apologised to audiences in those countries, saying, “Sorry Malaysia and Kuwait audience(s)” and then added Qatar to the list. Although it is unclear as to why the film has been banned in these countries, rumours doing the rounds suggest that it could probably be because of the film’s theme. The story of the film revolves around Vishnu Vishal, who plays a Muslim youngster called Irfan Ahmed. AHMEDABAD, FEB 10 (IANS): A dominant India will be looking to complete a series sweep against the West Indies in the third and final match of the series at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday. In the ongoing series, India have been bailed out by the bowlers while West Indies haven’t been able to get the desired fight from their batters. With Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer out of their isolation period after recovering from Covid-19, expect India to make further experiments now that they have an unassailable lead in the series. If Dhawan returns, it will be India’s new opening pair after Rohit Sharma-Ishan Kishan in the first match and then Rishabh Pant becoming a surprise partner for Sharma in the second match. Virat Kohli will be itching to get a big knock after two lean showings while Suryakumar Yadav will be aiming to carry forward his good show in the middle-order apart from

second one. With his hitthe-deck ability combined with hard lengths broke the back of West Indies’ batting order. Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur have supported him well while spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar have been handy. For West Indies’ biggest headache has been the lack of contributions
from the batters. After being skittled for 176 in the first ODI, the visitors were unable to chase down 237. In both matches, the lower-order batters tried to get the team back in the match but couldn’t do so. Their bowlers, especially Odean Smith, Alzarri Joseph and Akeal Hosein, put up a good show but would like for their batters

The Lakers were without Russell Westbrook, who missed his first game of the season with a back injury. Anthony Davis scored 17 for the Lakers. Madrid’s Benzema doubtful for Villarreal ahead of PSG clash
BARCELONA, SPAIN (AP): Real Madrid is hoping Karim Benzema will be fit to play in next week’s highly anticipated clash with Paris Saint-Germain. That tasty Champions League round-of-16 tie in Paris on Tuesday will pit Madrid against the team of former nemesis Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé, the player many in Spain hope will become Madrid’s next star. But, first, Madrid will have to likely miss Benzema’s goals for one more match, when the Spanish league leader visits the Villarreal of Unai Emery on Saturday. Benzema trained individually on Wednesday, working out in the team’s K Y M C
gym and running on the training pitch. Madrid has struggled to score since Benzema injured his left hamstring on Jan. 23 in a league match against Elche. Without his team-high 24 goals in 28 appearances, Madrid drew with Elche 2-2, was eliminated from the Copa del Rey in a 1-0 loss at Athletic Bilbao, and eked out a 1-0 win over Granada. Coach Carlo Ancelotti played Marco Asensio and Isco Alarcón, both attacking midfielders, up front against Granada. That paid off when Asensio netted the winner. But the decision also appeared to indicate that Ancelotti has little faith in the team’s
other pure striker, rarely used reserve Luka Jovic. Madrid will get winger Vinícius Júnior back for Villarreal after he served a one-game suspension for accumulation of yellow cards. The Brazilian’s 12 goals are second to Benzema’s 17 for the entire league. Villarreal enters the round in sixth place, but only three points from Barcelona in fourth and the final Champions League spot. Villarreal will also be without its top striker after Gerard Moreno injured a right leg muscle. Arnaut Danjuma, who has scored nine times this season, could start as striker.

The coaching arrangement, which started in Rotterdam, Netherlands, where Murray is playing an ATP 500 event after receiving a wildcard, will be until Vallverdu returns to work with Wawrinka next month.

Copa del Rey: First blood to Betis after semi-final first-leg win MADRID, FEB 10 (IANS): Goals from Borja Iglesias and William Car valho helped Betis come back from a goal down to take a 2-1 win in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final away to Rayo Vallecano. Betis always looked slightly better than their rivals and are now clear favorites to qualify for this season’s final after overcoming a poor start. The game was just five minutes old when Rayo took the lead: Iván Balliu produced a 40-yard run down the right, hurdling one challenge and crossed for Alvaro Garcia to nod the ball past Rui Silva and into the net on Wednesday night. After the goal, it turned into an open game, with both sides committed to attack, although Betis had more of the ball in the Rayo half. Betis striker, Juanmi was close to levelling after William Carvalho’s through ball but failed to get a touch before Iglesias equalised with a low shot from outside

the area after beating two defenders in a moment of individual magic. The half ended with Nabil Fekir wasting a chance when he opted to shoot rather than passing to the unmarked Iglesias, who moments later had a shot saved by Rayo keeper, Stole Dimitrievski. The second half began at the same high rhythm, with the ball going from end to end, but without any clear chances until William Carvalho put Betis in front in the 68th minute. The Betis midfielder controlled the ball just inside
the Rayo area before slipping it between a defender’s legs and side-footing past Dimitrievski. Rayo had to push forward looking for an equaliser after Carvalho’s goal and began to leave spaces at the back. Carvalho saw another effort saved, while Iglesias was close to a third for his team. At the other end, Nteka was close to turning in Bebe’s driven cross but was denied by Silva’s reflex save before Bebe also drove straight at the Betis keeper as the visitors take a lead to the return leg in three weeks.

Figure skating-US ‘Rocket Man’ Chen soars to gold BEIJING, FEB 10 (AGENCIES): American Nathan Chen achieved a spectacular redemption when he claimed the men’s figure skating title in dazzling fashion at the Beijing Olympics, completing a four-year journey to the exhilarating tunes of Elton John on Thursday. The 22-year-old, who left empty-handed after a meltdown in Pyeongchang in 2018, stood by the edge of the rink to soak up the atmosphere during warm-up and then skated carefreely to “Rocket Man” to add to his world record in the short programme for a total of 332.60. Wearing a Vera Wangdesigned orange and purple top decorated with stars in space in a nod to his medley of Elton John songs, Chen displayed power, grace and precision, effortlessly land-

ing his quadruple jumps as he triggered some rare cheering from a usually near-silent crowd. Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama (310.05) was a distant second and fellow Japanese Shoma Uno (293.00) came third, but ‘Rocket Chen’ showed he was a class above as he landed his fourth quadruple jump. “I never really thought that I’d be able to actually
make it this far in my career. I’d always, of course, dreamed about making an Olympics and winning the Olympics, but I was like, that’s hard, I don’t know if
I can make that happen,” Chen said. “I haven’t really had time to process fully, but it’s amazing so far.” Yuzuru Hanyu, who was hoping to win the event for a third time in a row, finished fourth on 283.21. All attention was on the Japanese great after his longawaited, delayed arrival in Beijing, but the 27-year-old fell out of contention with a disastrous short programme. He was also looking to become the first skater to land the quadruple Axel in competition but failed to deliver, falling again on a quadruple Salchow.

LO N D O N, F E B 1 0 (IANS): Defending champion Manchester City moved 12 points ahead of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League thanks to a comfortable 2-0 win at home to Brentford. Manchester City have 60 points from 24 games while Liverpool, with two games in hand, are second on 48. Pep Guardiola’s side was always in control on Wednesday night, although it wasn’t until the 40th minute that Riyad Mahrez put them ahead from the
penalty spot after Raheem Sterling had been fouled. Kevin de Bruyne assured the win in the 69th minute, sliding home a rebound after Sterling’s shot had been saved. Southampton twice came from behind before claiming a deserved 3-2 win away to Tottenham with Che Adams netting an 83rd-minute winner after Armando Broja and Mohamed Elyounoussi had cancelled out an own goal and Son Heung-min’s 70th-minute goal for Tot-
tenham, reports Xinhua. Teemu Pukki put Norwich ahead after just 38 seconds of their home game against Crystal Palace, but Wilfred Zaha’s 60th-minute equalizer means Norwich slip back into the bottom three. Aston Villa and Leeds United produced a thriller, which began with Leeds taking the lead through Daniel James only for Philippe Coutinho to lead a Villa fightback, by scoring the equaliser and then setting up Jacob Ramsey for two goals to make it
3-1, before James’ second of the match made it 3-2 at the break. Diego Llorente made it 3-3 after lashing home a loose ball following a corner in the 63rd minute before Coutinho limped off with a knee injury. Villa defender Ezri Konsa was then sent off for a second yellow card in injury time. Manchester United were again guilty of missing chances as they were held to a 1-1 draw away to bottom of the table Burnley, while West Ham’s 1-0
win at home to Watford thanks to Jarrod Bowen’s goal, lifted them above United into fourth place in the table.
Newcastle on the up as escape bid gathers momentum

around the stadium and new Toon hero Allan SaintMaximin joined in the chorus, it felt like a dark cloud had finally been lifted. All that had actually happened was that Newcastle, for the first time this season, moved out of the Premier League relegation zone. For a team whose already lofty ambitions went into the stratosphere after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund bought an 80% stake in the club in October, such a modest
milestone hardly seemed cause for such hysteria. But after a season of woe in which Newcastle did not win a league game until January, it felt like a pivotal moment in their bid to avoid relegation. Eddie Howe’s side aim to maintain the upward momentum as they host Aston Villa on Sunday seeking a third successive league victory for the first time since November 2018. They will do so brimming with confidence after the display against Everton
in which Saint-Maximin was electrifying, Kieran Trippier scored a stunning free kick and new 40 million-pound Brazilian signing Bruno Guimaraes made his debut off the bench. Howe, who replaced Steve Bruce after the takeover, is wily enough to know that one joyous night will not make or break Newcastle’s survival mission and a let-down against a dangerous Villa side would put his team back in the mire.
