CM sacks 3 advisors, 5 parl secys

G a ndh i naga r / Shimla, Dec 18 (IANS): The BJP on Monday just managed to hold on to power in Gujarat, edging past the half-way mark to clinch a sixth term in government, but wrested Himachal Pradesh from Congress with a comfortable majority. Overcoming initial setbacks in a seesaw battle, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged 99 seats, seven more than the magic figure of 92 in a House of 182. Putting up an improved performance, the Congress secured 77 seats while its allies got three more. The NCP, which fought alone, got a lone seat and Independents got two. In contrast, Himachal Pradesh lived up to its reputation of changing the ruler every election, as the BJP comfortably beat Congress, winning 44 of the 68 seats that were up for grabs. The Congress won 21 in the hill state where it had previously held 36 seats. Two seats went to Independents and a lone seat was taken by CPI-M. NPF, DAN reaffirm leadership of Dr. Shürho, TR Zeliang D IM A P U R , D E C 1 8 (NPN): NPF Legislature Party has resolved to fight the 2018 Assembly election under the leadership of NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, with TR Zeliang as its Chief Ministerial candidate, if the polls were held. A resolution to this effect was adopted at the NPF Legislature Par ty meeting held on Monday at State Banquet Hall, Kohima, where, amongst others things, the prevailing political situation was also discussed. The meeting also reaffirmed confidence and trust in the leadership of Dr Shürhozelie and Zeliang, while resolving to stand solidly behind the two leaders as they lead the NPF and DAN government. After detailed deliberations, the House further passed another resolution expressing its deep sense of appreciation to the party leadership for taking steps to bring about understanding and reconciliation in NPF so that a united stand could be presented for supporting the ongoing dialogue between NSCN (I-M) and NNPGs with the Government of India (GoI) for bringing about an (Cont’d on p-7)

state for days, described the BJP’s electoral victory in the state as “historic” as “in this age for a party to keep winning for so long” is unheard of. In his victory speech at BJP Headquarters in Delhi, Modi said the support for the party showed that “the nation is ready for reform agenda as every citizen wants India transformed”. In a message to his opponents, he said “let bygones be bygones” in a reference to the coming together of leaders heading caste formations to ally with Congress, to build a new Gujarat.

The Central Parliamentary Board of the BJP met at the party headquarters in Delhi and decided to depute Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and General Secretary Saroj Pandey to Gujarat for holding consultations on choosing the new Chief Minister. For Himachal Pradesh, where the chief ministerial face Prem Kumar Dhumal suffered a defeat, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Rural Development Minister Narendra Tomar are being sent to decide on a new leader. The Congress, whose

campaign was spearheaded by its now President Rahul Gandhi, conceded defeat but took a veiled jibe at the BJP. “My Congress brothers and sisters, you have made me very proud. You are different than those you fought because you fought anger with dignity. You have demonstrated... the Congress’ greatest strength is its decency and courage,” Gandhi tweeted. The BJP’s overall vote share in the state plunged from 60.11 per cent notched in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls to 49.1 per cent, indicating a sharp erosion in its support base in a state which the party considers its fortress. The vote share of the Congress, which joined hands with Patidar leader Hardik Patel, Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani and OBC leader Alpesh Thakore, soared from 33.45 per cent of 2014 to 41.4 per cent. In Himachal, the BJP was set to form the government although its two top leaders -- Chief Ministerial candidate P.K. Dhumal and state unit chief Satpal Satti were worsted in the hardfought contest. With Himachal in its kitty now, the BJP has 14

Acharya and Rio with their lady wives and others after unveiling the monolith of Selouphe model village.

D IM A P U R , D E C 1 8 (NPN): Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya inaugurated Seluophe Model Village under Dimapur district on Monday, DIPR stated. Seluophe village was adopted as Model Village by Lok Sabha MP, Neiphiu Rio under Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) for implementing various developmental schemes of the government. Seluophe was

the second village adopted by Rio, the first one being Longwa village under Mon district which he adopted last year. Addressing the inaugural function as chief guest at the newly constructed amphitheatre of Seluophe village, Acharya quoted Prime Minister Narenda Modi’s words “India belong to villages and, unless villages are developed, India

CM, MLAs fete PM Modi and Amit Shah D IM A P U R , D E C 1 8 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister, T.R. Zeliang along with his colleagues have congratulated Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and BJP national president, Amit Shah for the spectacular victory in the assembly elections of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. In his letter, Zeliang said that the Legislature party of the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) and all the members of 12th NLA, expressed their congratulations for the electoral victory and urged upon the leaders to grant the people of Nagaland a similar sense of pride and satisfaction by helping resolve the long standing Naga political issue well before the next assembly polls for long term peace in the state and the region.

DIMAPUR, DEC 18 (NPN): In another political development, chief minister, T.R. Zeliang on Monday sacked three advisors and five parliamentary secretaries to pave way for a major reshuffle of his ministry. As per the notification issued by the cabinet secretary, Pankaj Kumar, the advisors who have been sacked were-- Noke Wangnao (advisor PHE), CM Chang (advisor Plg & Co-ord), Deo Nukhu (advisor Higher Education, NBHM) and parliamentary secretaries-Pohwang Konyak (Evaluation, NRLM), Merentoshi R. DIMAPUR, DEC 18 (NPN): More trouble may be in store for the crisisridden DAN government under chief minister, T.R. Zeliang when the All Nagaland School Teachers’ Association (ANSTA) rejected outright reduction of Graduate Teachers pay band from Rs 9,300 to Rs 5,200 and grade pay from Rs 4,200 to Rs 3,400. According to a press release issued by its president Ponchulo Wanth and general secretary Visato Koso, ANSTA in its executive meeting held on December 15 contended that the move would mean a reduction of Rs 4,100 from existing pay band and Rs 800 less than the present grade pay. The meeting termed the reduction of salary an insult and humiliation to teaching community since salary was the sole sustaining source for the teachers. “It has brought down the morale of teachers to the lowest level and will have its own bearing in the teachinglearning process,” the meeting felt. The Association also expressed its strong resentment and disagreement with other provisions in new Service Rules – i) encadrement of Principal Director’s post to IAS cadre; ii) reduction of 19 DEO/Jt Director posts to (Cont’d on p-7) 12 and 253 (Cont’d on p-7)

will not develop.” He said Modi launched SAGY in 2014 with this vision. Appreciating Rio for already adopting two villages in Nagaland under SAGY, the Governor observed that if the two MPs and elected MLAs adopted five villages in five years (one village in one year), then Nagaland would develop at a fast pace. Encouraging the people to work a little harder to make Nagaland self-sufficient, Acharya remarked that God had bestowed the State with rich natural resources and that it had every potential to become a very rich State. He further advised the villagers of Seluophe to live up to the expectation as a model village in order to move forward. The Gover nor also handed over keys of ambulances purchased from the MP‘s fund to Zuneboto and

Meanwhile, the bandh passed off peacefully Monday with all shops closed and streets deserted with not even townspeople venturing out except for bandh volunteers. the festive season, as advised by the Lotha Hoho. The organizations also resolved to give a “48-hours dateline to the NSCN (I-M) to hand over the seized vehicle keys w.e.f. the date of publication of this resolution” failing which the organizations warned of withdrawing cooperation from the NSCN (I-M).

In a separate press statement, Lotha Hoho said it had taken “serious note of the imbroglio that was ongoing within the NSCN (I-M) and ACVA Wokha and other Wokha-based frontal groups over seizure of keys of two Wokha based taxis on December 13 by NSCN (I-M) cadres.” (Cont’d on p-7)

have yet to be allotted portfolios by chief minister, T.R. Zeliang even after two days and the unexplained delay is only adding to the suspense and despondency. According to sources in the government, chief minister, T.R. Zeliang was likely to effect a reshuffle of parliamentary secretaries/advisor by Tuesday after which the portfolios of the six newly inducted ministers would be announced. As a sequel to the reshuffle, affecting the ministry and as a clear sign that there would be no space given to dissidents, chief minister, T.R. Zeliang has so far sacked six cabinet ministers, three advisors and six parliamentary secretaries in a bid to purge them from the ministry. It may be recalled that the chief minister had sacked four ministers on December 13 followed by another two on December 15. Meanwhile, it was also learnt that there could be some changes in the cabinet when a minister could be dropped in order to accommodate another senior legislator. The reconciliation

process within NPF especially between legislators who remained with Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu and those who backed T.R. Zeliang-Neiphiu Rio (Lok Sabha MP) and erstwhile president of the now defunct NPF party, was yet to be fully resolved internally. Though Neiphiu Rio resigned as the president of the parallel NPF party and leaving legislators who supported him to reconcile, another development appears to have risen. It is reported that senior party functionary of the NPF party and Dr. Shürhozelie loyalist K.G. Kenye has not totally embraced the reunion between Dr. Shürhozelie and chief minister T.R. Zeliang. It was learnt that Kenye was alleged to have been linked with the foiled bid to dislodge chief minister, T.R. Zeliang by summoning some NPF legislators at Hotel de Oriental Kohima on December 13 where he and Neiphiu Rio had reportedly addressed the meeting. This was also claimed by four MLAs who had issued a written press statement.

CM assures to release scholarship today D IM A P U R , D E C 1 8 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister, T.R. Zeliang has agreed to release the remaining amount of Post Matric Scholarship (PMS) by Tuesday. This assurance was given to All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) president Katho P Awomi when the latter met him on Monday. In a press release, Awomi said he had conveyed to the chief minister that ANCSU would not be pacified with mere assurances and demanded firm steps. The union appreciated Zeliang for agreeing to release the remaining scholarship amount by Tuesday and taking necessary steps to set up a separate cell/ nodal department for implementing all scholarship schemes, besides making necessary arrangement so that students can expect to

The representation pointed out that NPPC Ltd. remains a sick industry since August 31, 1998 as declared by Board of Industrial and Financial Reconstruction. It also said that not only had the funds not been properly utilized, but huge amounts had been diverted by HPC Ltd. to cover expenditure not related to NPPC Ltd. It further alleged that a huge monopoly exists in the utilization of funds by HPC Ltd. because the managing director of NPPC Ltd. is also appointed by HPC Ltd. due to which there were huge chances of misappropriation of public money. It also asked that Article 4, of the Article of Association of NPPC Ltd., be fully implemented where the board of directors for the company will be constitute of members nominated in equal representation by HPC Ltd. People want change in Nagaland: Therie Staff Reporter

D IM A P U R , D E C 1 8 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president, K. Therie was confident that the people of Nagaland would vote out the NPF-led DAN government in the ensuing State Assembly election scheduled early next year. He said there was no reason why people would like to suffer by giving them another five years, adding, “People are going to change and will change since they all want change”. Speaking at the Dimapur District Congress Committee’s (DDCC) preChristmas celebrations at Congress Bhavan here on Monday, Therie stated that Election Commission of India (ECI) had already declared that Assembly elec(Cont’d on p-7) tions would be held as per

schedule in Nagaland. “ECI is likely to announce the schedule before Christmas and complete the process before February 25,” he added, pointing out that, as per rule, there must be a new Assembly by March 13, 2018. Attacking the ruling government, Therie recalled that the state legislative assembly, which represented the society, had assembled for 15 minutes, but members had nothing to say for the people. He added that although all 60 members belonged to the treasury bench, they lacked harmony and were divided, targeting each other. Therie also attacked BJP saying its worshipped Hindutva leaders who destroyed churches and forcefully converted Christians and Muslims in the name of (Cont’d on p-7) K Y M C
