G a ndh i naga r / Shimla, Dec 18 (IANS): The BJP on Monday just managed to hold on to power in Gujarat, edging past the half-way mark to clinch a sixth term in government, but wrested Himachal Pradesh from Congress with a comfortable majority.

Overcoming initial setbacks in a seesaw battle, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged 99 seats, seven more than the magic figure of 92 in a House of 182.

Putting up an improved performance, the Congress secured 77 seats while its allies got three more. The NCP, which fought alone, got a lone seat and Independents got two.

In contrast, Himachal Pradesh lived up to its reputation of changing the ruler every election, as the BJP comfortably beat Congress, winning 44 of the 68 seats that were up for grabs. The Congress won 21 in the hill state where it had previously held 36 seats. Two seats went to Independents and a lone seat was taken by CPI-M. NPF, DAN reaffirm leadership of Dr. Shürho, TR Zeliang D IM A P U R , D E C 1 8 (NPN): NPF Legislature Party has resolved to fight the 2018 Assembly election under the leadership of NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, with TR Zeliang as its Chief Ministerial candidate, if the polls were held.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at the NPF Legislature Par ty meeting held on Monday at State Banquet Hall, Kohima, where, amongst others things, the prevailing political situation was also discussed.

The meeting also reaffirmed confidence and trust in the leadership of Dr Shürhozelie and Zeliang, while resolving to stand solidly behind the two leaders as they lead the NPF and DAN government. After detailed deliberations, the House further passed another resolution expressing its deep sense of appreciation to the party leadership for taking steps to bring about understanding and reconciliation in NPF so that a united stand could be presented for supporting the ongoing dialogue between NSCN (I-M) and NNPGs with the Government of India (GoI) for bringing about an (Cont’d on p-7)

The BJP’s overall vote share in the state plunged from 60.11 per cent notched in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls to 49.1 per cent, indicating a sharp erosion in its support base in a state which the party considers its fortress.

The vote share of the Congress, which joined hands with Patidar leader Hardik Patel, Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani and OBC leader Alpesh Thakore, soared from 33.45 per cent of 2014 to 41.4 per cent.

DIMAPUR, DEC 18 (NPN): More trouble may be in store for the crisisridden DAN government under chief minister, T.R. Zeliang when the All Nagaland School Teachers’ Association (ANSTA) rejected outright reduction of Graduate Teachers pay band from Rs 9,300 to Rs 5,200 and grade pay from Rs 4,200 to Rs 3,400.

According to a press release issued by its president Ponchulo Wanth and general secretary Visato Koso, ANSTA in its executive meeting held on December 15 contended that the move would mean a reduction of Rs 4,100 from existing pay band and Rs 800 less than the present grade pay.

The meeting termed the reduction of salary an insult and humiliation to teaching community since salary was the sole sustaining source for the teachers. “It has brought down the morale of teachers to the lowest level and will have its own bearing in the teachinglearning process,” the meeting felt.

have yet to be allotted portfolios by chief minister, T.R. Zeliang even after two days and the unexplained delay is only adding to the suspense and despondency.

According to sources in the government, chief minister, T.R. Zeliang was likely to effect a reshuffle of parliamentary secretaries/advisor by Tuesday after which the portfolios of the six newly inducted ministers would be announced.

As a sequel to the reshuffle, affecting the ministry and as a clear sign that there would be no space given to dissidents, chief minister, T.R. Zeliang has so far sacked six cabinet ministers, three advisors and six parliamentary secretaries in a bid to purge them from the ministry.

It may be recalled that the chief minister had sacked four ministers on December 13 followed by another two on December 15.

Meanwhile, it was also learnt that there could be some changes in the cabinet when a minister could be dropped in order to accommodate another senior legislator.

The reconciliation

process within NPF especially between legislators who remained with Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu and those who backed T.R. Zeliang-Neiphiu Rio (Lok Sabha MP) and erstwhile president of the now defunct NPF party, was yet to be fully resolved internally.

Though Neiphiu Rio resigned as the president of the parallel NPF party and leaving legislators who supported him to reconcile, another development appears to have risen.

It is reported that senior party functionary of the NPF party and Dr. Shürhozelie loyalist K.G. Kenye has not totally embraced the reunion between Dr. Shürhozelie and chief minister T.R. Zeliang.

It was learnt that Kenye was alleged to have been linked with the foiled bid to dislodge chief minister, T.R. Zeliang by summoning some NPF legislators at Hotel de Oriental Kohima on December 13 where he and Neiphiu Rio had reportedly addressed the meeting.

This was also claimed by four MLAs who had issued a written press statement.

Tuli bodies demand probe into paper mill funds utilization DIMAPUR, DEC 18 (NPN): Various bodies of Tuli area have requested that an investigation/inquiry be conducted, by a competent central investigation agency, on the utilization/ mis-utilization of funds relating to rehabilitation of the now defunct Tuli Paper Mill - Nagaland Pulp & Paper Company Limited (NPPC Ltd.), at Tzudikong Town, Tuli.

A comprehensive representation signed by social activist and Bharat Jyoti Awardee, I. Chubatangit Jamir, stated that the representation was written on the strength of authorization accorded to him in the joint meeting of various bodies of Tuli area who were affected by the defunct factory.

It asked for investigations into the utilization of funds relating to revival of NPPC Ltd., particularly amounts sanctioned vide: i) September 17, 2007 letter addressed to the pay & accounts officer, Department of Heavy Industries for release of Rs. 54.60 crores to Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited (HPC Ltd.) for revival and up gradation of NPPC Ltd.; ii) August 11, 2009 letter from HPC Ltd., stating that the

the long awaited wish to bring the mortal remains of late Sonetso who had died in 1969 and was buried at Bhanu Gram protestant cemetery, Darjeeling.

Late Sonetso, son of late Kuhuso Vadeo was the first matriculate and designated student union president from Kutsapa village and was a pre-university Arts student of St. Joseph College Darjeeling when he passed away.

The release stated that grave exhumation project for further preservation of

late Sonetso was carried out by the KSU led by its president. It also paid due tribute and homage to the achievements and contributions of late Sonetso as a visionary leader and pioneer in the field of education.

In a touching and grand manner, the mortal remains of late Sonetso after 48 years was finally put to rest in his own native village Kutsapo on December 17 with all necessary post exhumation memorial rites.

DIMAPUR: For the first time in Northeast, one of the world’s most renowned implant company, Nobel Biocare (Sweden) in collaboration with Indian Dental Association (IDA), Nagaland State Branch conducted training on clinical dental implant programme in Kohima for Northeast dentists.

According to course co-ordinator, Dr. Pfukrolo Koza, the programme has been divided into two modules which would stretch for the period of six months. For the first clinical module, the lectures and hand-on sessions were conducted at De Oriental Grade Hotel from Decem-

ber 12-13 and the clinical sessions were conducted at Advanced Dental Aesthetic & Implant Clinic, Kohima from December 14-15, along with live-surgeries for implants placement by mentor and all the participants on their patients.

Meanwhile, Dr. Kanir Bhatia from Mumbai, a high profile international renowned oral implantologist and cosmetic dental surgeon would be the mentor of the programme.

Patients from Guwahati were also part for the patients benefited from the course. MDS periodontist and oral implantologist, Dr. Pfukrolo Koza who is also a course coordinator

has stated that the course would boost the local dentists to be trained as well as give their patients the latest oral rehabilitation treatment.

It may be noted that the vision of the clinical implant programme is to create world-class outstanding and research certification in implant dentistry, develop the next generation of premier scholars and implant dentists.

All participants would be awarded certificates on completion of the course and participant of course would vary from dental college professor, dental specialists and general dentists.

During the visit, the “under trail review committee” also conducted their quarterly review in the “legal aid clinic”.

The committee observed that the overall performance of the prison was satisfactory, except for the infrastructural deficiency which needed to be urgently addressed.

Manipur CSOs delegation calls on Rahul Gandhi

IMPHAL, Dec 18: Manipur based civil society organizations Monday called on Congress president Rahul Gandhi, and CPI national general secretary and MP, D Raja and conveyed the steadfast stand of the people of Manipur on territorial integrity of the state.

An eight-member team comprising representatives of United Committee Manipur (UCM), All Manipur United Clubs Organization (AMUCO) and Committee of Civil Societies Kangleipak (CCSK) is currently camping at the national capital to meet with Central leaders and discussed on issues related with Framework Agreement (FA) signed between government of India and NSCN (I-M) in August 2015.

During the meetings with Rahul Gandhi and D Raja, members of the delegation tabled a detail account on the steadfast stand of the civil society organizations (CSOs) and

people of Manipur when it comes to protecting the unity of the state.

They further tabled details of the decisions taken by an open dialogue session on ‘possible outcomes of framework agreement in the context of Manipur’ held on November 18.

As per resolution of the dialogue, it was agreed that representatives of civil bodies will meet the Central and urge them to respect the sentiments of the people of Manipur, the delegates informed the national leaders.

While handing over copies of memorandum prepared by the delegation for submitting to the Prime Minister and Union home minister, the delegation members relayed the unrest in the mind of the people of the state as the details of the framework agreement is being kept secret.

The members also told the central national leaders that the people of Manipur and neighbouring states would welcome the peace

settlement with NSCN (I-M) if it confines only in Nagaland. However, any agreement infringing the interest of the other neighbouring states and tantamount to distortion of territorial integrity of the state in future will not be accepted, the members cautioned.

While expressing concern over the details of the framework agreement being kept secret, the delegation also sought the leaders in pressing the Centre on making the contents of the agreement public.

The eight-member team will also be meeting Lok Jan Shakti chief Ram Villas Paswan. They are also planning to meet Aam Admi Party (AAP) chief and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and CPI(M) leader Prakash Karat on Tuesday.

The delegation has also south appointments to meet the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, home minister Rajnath Singh and BJP president Amit Shah. However, the meeting is likely to fixed only after December 20.

APPSC to re-conduct combined prelims following complaints

Itanagar, Dec 18 (PTI): The Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) has decided to re-conduct the combined competitive preliminary exams following protests over anomalies in question papers of the optional subjects, an official release said.

The exam, conducted last month, ran into controversy after candidates accused the commission of providing erroneous question papers and setting questions from a Pakistan-based website.

The release, however, did not mention the new date for the exam. The candidates even staged a dharna in front of the Commission’s office, demanding re-conduct of the exam. Their other demands included disciplinary action against the Controller of Examinations, setting up of an enquiry committee headed by a retired High Court judge or a sitting Session judge.

Meanwhile, the Peoples’ Party of Arunachal (PPA) on Monday in a memorandum to the Commission’s chairman, asked him to immediately adopt the Union Public Service Commission pattern of conducting the civil services exam in the state. The party suggested the APPSC to do away with the outdated system of conducting the preliminary exam where the candidates appear with different optional subjects. “Instead, the UPSC pattern of a civil services aptitude test and a general studies paper mandatory for all the candidates irrespective of their different academic backgrounds should be introduced from the next exam,” the party said.

Guwahati, Dec 18 (Agencies): With time, Guwahati has been known to not be a safe haven for women. Many crimes are on the rise with nearly four crimes against women taking place in the city daily. The City Police has provided statistics to back the statement that crime against women in Guwahati is increasing. Guwahati seems to end 2017 with an unpleasant record of crime against women.

Till October this year, Guwahati witnessed as many as 1,092 crimes against women. This ten-month crime rate is too high for a city that is tagged as a smart city. When calculated it is shocking to see that over 3.6 crimes against women are taking place a day in Guwahati.

Within ten months (up to October) in Guwahati, as many as 14 women were murdered, 193 were kidnapped or abducted, 66 were raped, 11 women died in dowry-related incidents, one murdered after rape, 138 women were molested, 590 women had to face cruel treatment from their husbands, three cases were registered under immoral trafficking (P) Act and 76 cases were registered under Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act. Though cases of crime against women in November and December this year have not been taken into account, yet, the number of crime against women in just ten months is going to surpass the number of crime against women in 12 months in 2016 when as many as 1098 crimes against women were recorded.

There were 1155 crimes against women in 2015 and 1075 in 2014 in the city.

Tura, Dec 18 (Agencies): In an absolute shocker, an online post on social media, showing the killing of two endangered clouded leopards – an endangered species of animals has raised an alarm with most citizens condemning the brutal killing for meat of the two cats.

The post by one J Tigite Sangma, which went viral immediately after being posted, was noted by animal rights activists as well as conservationists, who demanded the strictest punishment for the offenders. The post, which included photos and videos, was later removed by the owner though by then the damage had already been done.

Neofelis nebulosa, or the clouded leopard is listed amongst vulnerable species and thus protected through the Wildlife Act. Research has pointed to there being less than 10,000 such animals across the world with the animals being found mainly in the Himalayan foothills, parts of China and South East Asia. The hunting of the leopard is banned in India and in most countries which have a clouded leopard population.

Haflong, Dec 18 (PTI): Employees of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC), who have not received salaries since November 2016, have auctioned their used household goods to make ends meet.

Items such as televisions, motorbikes, scooters, utensils, chairs, tables and stoves were auctioned for raising money to pay medical bills and school fees, and to buy essential items, NCHAC Employees Union (NCHACEU) vice-president Joyraj Thaosen said.

“We managed to raise Rs 25,000 from the auction. The people are sympathetic to us and

many of them donated money.

Rs 20,000 came from donation,” NCHACEU secretary Hoineikim Changsan said.

Of the 2,270 people going without salary for over a year, around 200 held the auction near the Cultural Institute Hall at Haflong, the headquarters of Dima Hasao district, on Saturday.

The NCHAC controls almost all the departments in the Dima Hasao district with executive power except general administration, police, treasury, election and judiciary.

It could not pay salary to employees in its role since November 2016, because previous governments allegedly hired

unnecessarily large number of employees, NCHAC Chief Executive Member Debolal Garlosa had said earlier.

Garlosa said the hill council does not earn a lot to pay these employees but he will make efforts to release their salaries as soon as possible.

NCHACEU information secretary Bonil Joharisaid said the affected people are ‘Normal Sector’ employees, who are recruited by departmental heads and not by the government, and their salaries are paid from the revenue earned by the NCHAC. The employees have been agitating for long, demanding salary but without success.

HM wants quick notification on Enemy Property Act rules the process in respect of remaining 2,991 properties will be completed soon, said the statement.

“Also the properties in the process for vesting numbering 5,863 may also be surveyed at the earliest.”

The meeting also decided that the distribution of pension through banks to the freedom fighters under Swantratra Sainik Samman Yojana should be further streamlined by strengthening Pension Distribution Monitoring Cell to reconcile on monthly basis.

It was informed that 73 per cent of pension accounts have been linked to Aadhaar by the banks and the division was given the target to achieve 100 per cent linkage at the earliest by coordinating with the all 23 banks.

The rehabilitation issues relating to Sri Lankan Tamilians staying in 107 camps and Tibetian refugees were also reviewed in the

meeting and the division was advised to ensure their good living conditions.

The progress of developmental activities for settling about 1,000 returnees from former Indian enclaves in Bangladesh and infrastructure development in 51 Bangladeshi enclaves in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal was also reviewed at the meeting, said the statement, adding that so far, Rs 413 crore has been released to the West Bengal government for developing the infrastructure.

Rajnath Singh also asked the officials to monitor the progress of the implementation regularly to ensure timely completion of the project to rehabilitate the returnees.

New Delhi, Dec 18 (IANS): Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday directed expeditious notification of the rules of the Enemy Property Act 2017.

“The rules should be notified expeditiously considering the importance of the new provisions in the Enemy Property Act 2017,” he said while reviewing the functioning of Freedom Fighters and Rehabilitation Division (FFRD) of the Home Ministry.

The Minister also asked that the custodian office be strengthened for this purpose and the FFRD should identify the properties free from encumbrance for quick disposal and monetisation.

A statement from the Ministry said that similar properties in Pakistan belonging to Indians have been disposed of.

AAP Delhi MLA and Chief Spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj told IANS that the BJP was “hiding something” by not accepting to count the VVPAT slips.

Bill to extend proxy voting to overseas Indians in LS New Delhi, Dec 18 (PTI): A bill seeking to extend the facility of ‘proxy voting’ to overseas Indians, on the lines of service voters, was introduced in the Lok Sabha today.

The draft law also seeks to make the election law gender neutral by replacing the term ‘wife’ with ‘spouse’ to benefit service voters.

According to the provisions of ‘Representation of the People Act (Amendment) Bill, 2017’ introduced by Union Law

Ravi Shankar Prasad Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad in the Lower House, overseas Indians, who are entitled to vote in India, can now appoint a proxy

voter to cast their votes.

As of now, overseas Indians were free to cast their votes in the constituencies where they were registered. But, according to the draft bill, they would now be allowed to use the option of proxy, which till now was only available to service personnel.

An expert committee of the Election Commission working on the issue had in 2015 forwarded the legal framework to the law ministry to amend the electoral laws to allow

overseas Indians use proxy voting.

Unofficial data with EC shows that only 10,000 to 12,000 overseas voters have exercised their franchise because they do not want to spend foreign currency to come to India and vote.

The bill said the necessary provision of coming to India to cast ballot caused “hardship” to overseas electors. Another provision in the amendment bill relates to spouses of service voters.

Election, solution and confusion

W

ith tenure of the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly to end by March 2018 and before which the new house has to be constituted as mandated by the constitution of India; there seems to be confusion about holding of elections in 2018.

The present confusion has arisen because of the expectations of a likely agreement to be arrived at between the government of India with the Naga National Groups (NPGs) and the NSCN (I-M). Over 80 talks have been held since 2002 between the government of India and the NSCN (I-M). Owing to pleas of political leaders, leaders and elders of various Naga tribe organizations including NGOs and civil society groups, the government of India widened the ambit of negotiation by agreeing to talk with those Naga groups who had so far remained outside the purview of talks. As of today, the Naga Nationalist Political Groups (NNPGs) comprising of six groups have come together after the initiative spearheaded by the Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC). The NNPGs have formed a unified body– Working Committee – headed

by N. Kitovi Zhimomi, ato kilonser of GPRN/NSCN. This has added a new dimension to the expectation among Nagas as it was felt that inclusive talks will be fitting in order to embrace all sections of groups. The expected and desired agreement is yet to reach its final stage and therefore, it would be unwise to expect it to be achieved within a time frame State political leaders have been quite certain or appear to believe that the agreement is just a corner away and so elections should not be held. The elected members have resolved to urge upon the government of India to bring settlement at the earliest and that elections be not in February 2018 held in anticipation of the solution. Why state politicians are so vociferous about solution needs to be understood. The elected members are to deliver and so need to first reflect on the mess they have created during the decades in power by their reckless spending in the name of creating infrastructures which today stand totally exposed as sham and scam. The roads are not motorable and people are still groping in the darkness without electricity.

The government has no money for payment of salaries of many employees, scholarships to students, purchase of urgently needed transformers and vital items for maintenance of the power system, repair of roads in their most deplorable condition etc but has money for diversions towards political dramas, entertainment payment for favoured contractors and firms. Having lost credibility with the public and voters, politicians have probably taken up the ‘solution’ in order to deflect from their responsibility for having caused moral, social and economic devastation of Nagaland. It may be noted that this newspaper during 1997, had propagated postponement of assembly election in 1998 in view of expected solution.

Towards this, Nagaland Post in its editorial headlined ‘Solution Not Election’, strongly advocated holding back of the February 1998 general elections in view of the cease fire signed the previous year and initial talks held. However, then chief minister S.C. Jamir differed by saying that there was no guarantee that solution would be achieved within a specific time frame. The same counter could be applied against postponement of election since there is no guarantee that solution will be finalized before February 2018.

To understand the issue, government of India’s Interlocutor R.N. Ravi had told this newspaper, during an interview, that political negotiation and constitutional election are two different matters and which should not be mixed up.

Being faithful to Jesus Christ is the most difficult thing we try to do today. We will be faithful to our work, to serving others, or to anything else; just don’t ask us to be faithful to Jesus Christ. Many Christians become very impatient when we talk about faithfulness to Jesus.

Our Lord is dethroned more deliberately by Christian workers than by the world. We treat God as if He were a machine designed only to bless us, and we think of Jesus as just another one of the workers.

The goal of faithfulness is not that we will do work for God, but that He will be free to do His work through us. God calls us to His service and places tremendous responsibilities on us. He expects no complaining on our part and offers no explanation on His part. God wants to use us as He used His own Son.

an has always envied the powers of animals.

His natural instinct was to complete himself in mythology with animal powers and become a superbeing. Angels, fairies, the Greek Drakaina, Mothmen, Seraphs, the Norse Valkyries, the winged genies of Assyria, the Vanth of Etruscan mythology who guide people to the underworld after death, the Chayot of Judaism, are all humans with wings.

Mythology and folklore is full of animal-human hybrids. Most of these have been given divine status – whether of god, or villain, or trickster. In Christian art the devil is depicted with a human body, horns of a goat and a ram, goat’s fur and ears, nose and canine teeth of a pig. In ancient Mesopotamia, Pazuzu the king of demons, the southwest wind, bringer of storms and drought, has the body of a man, the head of a lion or dog, the talons of an eagle, two pairs of wings, and a scorpion’s tail. (But though Pazuzu is an evil spirit, he drives and frightens away other evil spirits, protecting humans against plagues and misfortunes).

Human hybrids appear in million-year old cave paintings. These were attempts to depict priests (shamans) in the process of acquiring the mental and spiritual attributes of various beasts.

In India the most famous man-animal combination is Ganesha. But, unlike other cultures, our mythology does not nor-

mally mix animals with men in order to worship them.

The beauty of the preHindu and Hindu mythology is that it confers divine status on the animals themselves – Kurma the tortoise, Matsya the fish, Garuda the eagle, Jambavan the bear, Kamadhenu the cow (who in later mythology is given a human head, body of a cow, wings, tail of a peacock), Nagas like Sesha who can change into humans at will like Balrama. In the Puranas, Sesha was a human ascetic.

Brahma, pleased with his worship, entrusted him with the duty of carrying the world. Sesha changed into a serpent, entered into a hole in the Earth, slithered to the bottom where he then loaded the Earth onto his head.

In the other mythologies, specially the Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Chinese and Japanese, the fusion of man- animal makes the being divine.

Pan is a deity in Greek mythology. He has the torso of a human and hindquarters, legs and horns of a goat. He is the god of the wild, fields, groves, shepherds and flocks, nature and rustic music. He stands for fertility and the season of spring. The word panic comes from him.

When disturbed he would shout scaring all. When the giants, called Titans, attacked the abode of the Greek gods, Olympus, Pan frightened the attackers away. The other word that comes from him is “companion” – and that is evoca-

The Greek Satyr is half human, half goat, hedonistically devoted to pleasure. His Roman counterpart is the Faun who is harmless.

Mermaids, half human and half fish are in every mythology but each culture has its own twists.

Jengu is a beautiful water spirit of the Cameroon with a human upper body and a fish tail, long hair and gapped teeth who bring good fortune and healing to those who worship her.

Sirena and Sireno are mermaids/mermen, from Philippine folklore, who guard the water. The Sirena has an enchanting voice that hypnotizes sailors and fishermen causing shipwrecks.

Dagon is a Merman worshipped in Mesopotamia and Assyria as a fertility God. Cecaelia is a female half human, lower half octopus who lives in Lake Yaju, Japan and is a Sea Witch. The Cook Islands have a god called Avatea whose right half is that of a man and the left half of a fish. He is the father of gods and men. His eyes are the sun and moon and he is the god of light.

The Harpy is a Greco-

Roman mythological creature with the lower body, wings and claws of a bird and the chest and head of a woman. Harpies are fierce, ill tempered, and live in filth. They are associated with the wind and the underworld and are sent to take those humans away who are unwilling to die.

They do vengeful errands for other gods. Lilitus are Greek women with bird legs and wings, demons who work subtly to destroy society by leading mortals into sinful acts.

The Russian Alkonost, with the head of a woman and the body of a bird, makes such beautiful sounds that hearers forget all that they know and don’t want anything more ever again. She lives in the underworld with her counterpart the Sirin. The Alkonost lays her eggs on a beach and rolls them into the sea. When they hatch, a thunderstorm sets in and the sea becomes so rough that it becomes impossible to traverse. The Sirins are half-owl, halfhuman creatures. They sing to the saints foretelling future joys. Humans found them dangerous, as men, who heard them would forget everything, follow them and ultimately die.

People would attempt to save themselves from Sirins by making loud noises to scare the birds off. In Persia the Sirins symbolized eternal joy and heavenly happiness. The Gamayun is also a Russian woman with the body of a bird.

She is prophetic and a symbol of wisdom and knowledge.

The Sirens are part of Greek mythology as birds with large women’s heads, bird feathers and scaly feet, playing harps.

They have beautiful voices which seduced men, killing them.

The Jatakas describe the Kinnaras as half human, half bird, fond of music and song with the female beating a drum and male playing on lute. They go on in later mythology to be celestial musicians and protectors of humans.

A divine creature of Japanese Buddhist mythology, with the head of a bird and the torso of a human based on the Hindu mythology of Garuda, the Karura is enormous, firebreathing, and feeds on dragons/serpents who are non-Buddhist.

Horus the falcon headed is one of the most significant ancient Egyptian deities. Horus served many functions, most notably being a god of the sky, war and hunting.

Another creature that straddles many cultures is the half human–half horse.

The Anggitay, a Philippine female with the upper body of a human with the lower body of a horse, smells out gems. The Greek Centaur, and his predecessor the

Ipotane, have a mystical, ancient energy that reaches the desired outcome for their keeper. In Hinduism, Lord Hayagriva is worshipped as the god of knowledge with a human body and a horse’s head, brilliant white in colour, with white garments and seated on a white lotus.

Symbolically, the divinity represents the triumph of pure knowledge over the demonic forces of passion and darkness. Probable origins about the worship of Hayagriva go back to 2,000 BC, when Indo-Aryan people worshipped the horse for its speed, strength, intelligence. Hayagriva is worshipped on the day of the full moon in August and on Mahanavami, the ninth day of the Navaratri festival.

There are so many more. The tragedy is that, as we “evolve” we do not include animals in our spiritual fulfilment any more. There are no religions and cults any more that embrace all of Earthkind. In fact, religions like Yazidism, which is based on ancient Mesopotamian beliefs, and practiced by the Yazidis, a minority group in Iraq, have attracted extreme hatred. The Yazidis, who worship a gentle peacock-angel called Melek Tawwus as the archangel, who has been placed by God to care for the world, have been called Satan worshippers and are being systematically exterminated as I write this. Solution before election

he Nagaland chapter of “The game of thrones” has consistently portrayed one irresponsible episode after another running a government sans governance, transparency or accountability with only a negative entertainment value as compared to the original TV Serial by the same title. Just imagine...with a couple of months left for the completion of the term of the current Legislative Assembly...the power mongering of our so-called leaders still carries on unabated. More of similar ongoing drama will perhaps be staged shamelessly even before the dying hours of their term. We shall have to wait and see.

Meanwhile there is a more relevant and pressing issue that the Nagas need to focus our attention upon and that is on the issue of ‘solution before election’. Whatever be the shortfall of the oppositionless Assembly...this is a subject that deserves a careful analysis. It was an easier task for the present incumbent Ministers/ Parliamentary Secretaries/ Advisors and a few left-over MLAs to take a magnanimous stand to quit their seats to allow an ‘Interim Government’ to take over if the talk between GoI and NNPGs concluded positively. In the first place the people voted them to power to govern... not abdicate. Therefore, as noble a reason as it may be, it still should have technically been considered mandatory on the part of our elected representatives to first seek the mandate of the people before such a resolution was passed in the Assembly...which of course did not even occur to them. The indifference of the people was taken advantage of ...and as was expected not a voice was raised to question this flaw. Such a drama in the Assembly was also possible because the elected representatives knew well enough that the protracted political negotiation with the GoI would not conclude within their term and that most of them would get ample opportunity to recuperate more than their share of the election expenditure by raping the system as they have done thus far. It was a very safe gamble

to portray a grandstanding ‘patriotic image’.

The present status of the Naga National Political scenario has however undergone a sea change as compared to the past uncertain times. With or without “Sovereignty”, with or without “Integration”, situation is fast crystallising towards some possible positive outcome of the talk as never before with the official involvement of the majority of the NNPG Factions participating in the negotiation. The expectancy level of a conclusion is upbeat. Though this is the expectation, an awkward unsettling question still remains unpredictable. For instance if election is held, would the newly elected representatives with a full term ahead of them continue to abide by the resolution of their predecessors and be prepared to give way to the ‘interim government’ after going through a bludgeoning electoral process of buying and selling votes where crores would have been spent by each candidate despite ‘clean election’ campaign? Somehow it does not sound humanly tenable when M-O-N-E-Y becomes the core issue. Serious conflict of individual interests will necessarily come to the fore to destabilise smooth transition. It is also rather difficult to imagine that the freshly elected representatives would casually forego their full term along with their astronomical election expenditures and allow ‘Interim Government” that does not include them, to take over. Among other complications, the first question as to who should take the responsibility to refund the election expenditures of each candidate will naturally surface as a matter of course without doubt. Even in the unlikely event of the Government willing to reimburse the expenditure of the candidates, the problem will still persist because no candidate will be in a position to claim or recover the actual amount of their expenditure at the risk of disqualification...in view of the Election Commission’s expenditure ceiling limits.

The possibility of an unwilling House that is legally insti-

tuted, to voluntarily abdicate its position will become a very tricky uncomfortable proposition. Better it is therefore, not to have an election to enable an uncomplicated transition... if GoI is seriously confident of an early solution.

In as far as our present Elected Representatives are concerned, indifferently passing resolution for “solution before election” in the Assembly is not good enough.

Instead of continuing their ‘intrigue tamasha’ for Leadership and Ministerial birth the entire House should tender their resignation to backup their resolution and prove the sincerity and commitment of the Nagas to the GoI on the Naga Political issue. After all it is just a couple of months to go before their term expires... and after all, each of them has more than recuperated their election investments. Greed should be suspended. This is the least they can do to add weightage to their resolution and prove they mean business.

Thereafter mass awareness rally should be generated in every District for boycott of election if declared, to send a clear message to the GoI that the Nagas can no longer tolerate this casual tomfoolery for 70 years plus. Let Naga honour, the collective strength and wisdom be displayed in unison and firmly stand by “solution before election” for once in our lifetime. If our people were capable of standing together to paralyse the Government for a comparatively lesser matter concerning the ULB election...then why not this?

Considering the overall complexity of the problems in the backyard of reality, it would be in the interest of the GoI to postpone the election and fast track the final solution of the Naga Political issue. Constitutionally speaking, the Nagas being compelled to boycott the election (if announced) will have more hazardous ramification for the GoI. On the other hand, declaring PR for the duration before solution would serve everyone’s interest snugly.

Many people think that Christmas is the season we clean up and decorated our house and streets beautifully with stars and lights, giving gifts and sharing Christmas cakes, buying new clothes and also a time when many have would have finished their yearly works and take rest. But it is something much more than that. It is a time to remember the love of God, who sent His promised only Son for you and me 2000 years ago to die for our sins (John 3:16).

It is sad truth that during this Godly season many people does even more what we shouldn’t be doing. For many it is a season to enjoy in worldly pleasures, for some it is a season to spent time with family and for few it is a time to remember God’s love truly.

What is Christmas when we decorated our house with lights and star as a sign that Christ is born in this house and in that same house you are doing all kinds of things that God would hate.

What would the star on our house mean when your family is at messed with God? What would that star mean when your relationship is at messed with God and you still didn’t put an effort to make right with Him? Your heavy meal, decora-

tions, new dresses and precious gifts are not just the signs of your joy receiving your Savior?

What best can we do this Christmas? If we were to give Jesus a gift this Christmas, what could we give Him that He would appreciate? After all He is the Creator of all things (Hebrews 1:2) and the one who holds all things together (Colossians 1:17).

Prophet Micah lived in a day like ours: (a). When Israel is facing tensions from Assyria, Egypt, and the Philistines. (b). Moral corruption, where rich explode the poor, corrupt leaders and false prophets. When men falls away from God and could not do anything good to save himself anymore, Jesus came to bridge the gap so that men could reach God once again. But God does not delight in quality of sacrifice, quantity of sacrifice or the religious rituals (Micah 6:6,7).

It is this time we remember that “in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself ” 2 Cor. 5:19. Our best Christmas gift to Jesus would be reconciling with friends, family, staffs, and neighbors and most of all with God. He delights in justice, mercy and humility (Micah 6:8).

This is when the true meaning of God sending His Son is fulfilled.

Let us remember for why God sent His only Son, and have a meaningful Christmas.

The joy of Christmas celebration has already begun. Every year we celebrate Christmas in different ways as per individual understanding. Some celebrate just for merry making, some celebrate just for family gathering. Some really celebrate with dedication and commitment that this is the day on which the Savior of the world came to redeem humanity from the bondage of sin. When Jesus was born there was nobody to receive him as the world were busy and preparing for festival and not ready to receive Him to let him born in their homes. The Bible says that there was no room in the inn.. Only the manger welcomed the Savior of the world to let him lay there. Even if the angels sang the song JOY TO THE WORLD there was no joy because they did not understand the true meaning of JOY. The Biblical meaning of JOY is J FOR JESUS, O FOR OTHER AND Y FOR YOU. Which means Jesus, others and You be the last then only you will receive the real joy.

In this materialistic world we make the reverse. You first, others and Jesus last. This is how people of the world do not enjoy the real meaning of JOY. When the word I come first in our lives we shall not receive the real joy.

So why not we all ponder on the word JOY this Christmas and make Jesus first .others second and YOU last Then experience the real JOY. So if you want real joy wonderful joy let JESUS come into your heart this Christmas. “The key takeaway (of Gujarat Assembly elections) is it’s not (going to be) a cakewalk for the BJP any more in 2019 election,” Telangana Rashtra Samiti Floor Leader in Lok Sabha, A P Jithender Reddy told PTI. “They (BJP) have to basically again check their administration,” he said.

Though the BJP is set to return to power in the western state, Reddy saw the electoral verdict as being a setback to the party.

“Definitely (it’s a setback). 103 seats (the projected BJP tally this afternoon) is not coming back to power (it should have been bigger number of seats),” he said.

New Delhi, Dec 18 (PTI): Gold prices weakened by Rs 25 to Rs 29,525 per ten gram at the bullion market Monday as demand from local jewellers slackened even as the metal gained strength overseas.

Silver held steady at Rs 38,100 per kg in limited deals from industrial units and coin makers.

Traders said easing demand from local jewellers and retailers at the domestic spot market as wedding season comes to an end, weighed on gold prices but a better trend overseas capped the fall.

Globally, gold traded higher 0.10 per cent to 1,256.30 ounce in Singapore.

In the national capital, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity shed Rs 25 each to Rs 29,525 and Rs 29,375 per ten gram respectively. It had gained Rs 40 in Saturday’s trade.

Sovereign, however, went up by Rs 100 to Rs 24,500 per piece of eight gram.

On the other hand, silver ready ended flat at Rs 38,100 per kg, while weeklybased delivery traded higher

by Rs 130 to Rs 37,335 per kg. Silver coins however remained unaltered at Rs 70,000 for buying and Rs 71,000 for selling of 100 pieces.

Mumbai, Dec 18 (PTI): Rating agencies Moody’s Investors Ser vice and ICRA Monday said they have a stable outlook for the Indian power sector over the next 12-18 months and expects a change in its energy mix towards renewables.

The stable outlook reflects their expectation of generally stable industry conditions and government policy initiatives, which will likely lead to improvements in the financial position of state-owned electricity distribution companies, a statement issued here stated.

“India (rated Baa2 stable by Moody’s) will see a change in its energy mix towards renewables, as the country adds more capacity and moves towards its commitments under the Paris Agreement on climate change,” it said.

However, the growth in renewable generation capacity will put pressure on conventional power generation, although most power

producers are protected by availability based power purchase agreements.

Moody’s also says that the government’s debt restructuring of the financially weak distribution utilities under the Ujwal Discom Assurance Yojana (UDAY) will gradually improve the financial conditions of state-owned discoms, thereby alleviating off-taker risk, which is a key negative factor for the credit quality of power generators.

“India’s state-owned power discoms will demonstrate weak to moderate financial profiles,” Moody’s Vice President and Senior Analyst Abhishek Tyagi said.

He added that greater funding diversity will help the power companies to expand capacities and add renewable capacities, although corporate-type debt funding will remain dominant for power companies in India.

NEW DELHI, Dec 18 (PTI): The Income-Tax Department has unearthed undisclosed income of Rs 7,961 crore post demonetisation, from November last year to March, Parliament was informed today.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Pon Radhakrishnan said the department, during this period, conducted searches on around 900 groups, wherein assets worth over Rs 900 crore were seized and undisclosed income of Rs 7,961 crore was admitted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8, 2016 had announced demonetisation of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes in a major assault on black money, fake currency and corruption. The minister further said that as per the data available to NCRB (National Crime Record Bureau), after cancellation of Legal Character of Specified Bank Notes, an amount of Rs 18.70 crore FICN (Fake Indian Currency Note) have been seized by State Police till November 30, 2017 as against Rs 15.70 crore seized the year-ago period.

New Delhi, Dec 18 (PTI): Technology giant Apple has increased prices of various iPhone models by up to Rs 3,720 after the government raised import duty on smartphones to 15 per cent last week.

According to updated prices on Apple India’s website, the maximum retail price (MRP) of the 256GB version of iPhone X has been raised by Rs 3,720 to Rs 1,05,720.

Similarly, consumers will have to shell out Rs 88,750 -- an increase of Rs 2,750 -- for the 256GB variant of iPhone 8 Plus.

The price of iPhone 6 32GB version has been increased by Rs 1,280 -- or, 4.3 per cent -- to Rs 30,780 after the duty hike.

The increase in MRP is applicable on all iPhone models -- except the iPhone SE, which is being assembled in India by Wistron since June this year.

Last week, the government had announced higher taxes on imported smartphones at 15 per cent, from the earlier 10 per cent, to give boost to local manufacturing.

The UN, in its latest report, projected India’s growth rate to be 7.2 per cent in 2018 and 7.4 per cent in 2019. Describing India’s economic condition as largely positive and “favourable to growth”, Sebastian Vergara, an Economic Affairs Officer at the UN, said the country needs to unleash the next set of reforms to achieve its potential.

“It needs to think as to how to maintain and consolidate its growth for a very long period of time.

Church attack: Pak steps up security Islamabad, Dec 18 (PTI): Pakistan Monday beefed up security around hundreds of religious places of minorities, including Hindu temples, a day after ISIS suicide bombers struck a church during a mass in the restive southwestern city of Quetta, killing nine people and injuring 44 others.

Authorities have instructed law enforcement agencies to tighten security arrangements in and around the worship places and other places of religious significance for the non-Muslims against any possible threat.

“Our resolve remains strong and unflinching against terrorists. Their (cowardly) attacks cannot weaken us,” Balochistan Chief Minister Sanaullah Zehri said today as he announced Rs 10 lakh in compensation each for the families of the dead, and Rs 5 lakh for each injured in the attack. Sindh Home Minister Sohail Anwar Siyal also asked for increasing security for mosques, shrines, Imambargahs etc.

“Those who are adamant to destroy peace in the country are ulcerous and the entire nation is united against their nefarious designs,” Siyal was quoted as saying by Dawn.

Nay Pyi Taw, Dec 18 (IANS): The Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Monday reported the burning of 40 additional Rohingya villages in Myanmar in a military campaign, which has led more than 655,000 people of this Muslim minority community to flee to Bangladesh.

The HRW used satellite images to identify the new incidents, recorded between October and November, raising the total number of villages completely or partially razed to 354 since the beginning of the military offensive on August 25, reports Efe news.

A lawyer working for the Trump for America (TFA) group, who helped Donald Trump’s transition to the White House after his election, complained on Saturday after the group became aware Mr Mueller’s investigation had obtained tens of thousands of their emails.

Brendo Kamson, Cieu, Vizoro, Avar, Dibam, Ireusap, Kadimbung, James Chawang, Thangchapou, Nzanthung, Akhrielie, Benwangbo and Namjunwang. The camp director was Keyigumgwangbe, AFC ‘C’ license.

Altogether 250 players aged group between 6 to 14 years from Peren district took part in the six days long free coaching camp in four different locations viz New Jalukie, Jalukie town, Samjiuram and Jalukie B.
