Protests across India over CAA, police action against students

NEW DELHI, DEC 16 (AGENCIES): Massive protests- some peaceful, some violent- erupted across India on Monday against the police crackdown in Jamia Millia Islamia University, Delhi and the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act as students and political leaders took to the streets, even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi called these protests “deeply distressing” and appealed for peace. Home Ministry has asked states and Union Territories (UTs) to take all possible steps to check violence and ensure safety of life and properties. The protest spread across college campuses and institutions across India as students in thousands voiced out against police action in Jamia Millia Islamia University and Aligarh Muslim University, Lucknow. Delhi: Thousands of students took part in the protests in Delhi against the police action on Jamia students. Students of Delhi University boycotted their examinations and held protests outside the Arts faculty in North Campus amid heavy deployment of police personnel.

At the protests at India Gate, which were mainly led by students, demonstrators read out the preamble to the Constitution on Monday evening. Students alleged that members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) caused trouble.The Hyderabad: Students from the Maulana Azad National Urdu University, University of Hyderabad and Osmania University protested against the amended law and the police action in Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia. Protestors at Hyderabad University called for a rollback of the amended law, and asked for stringent action against the Delhi and Uttar Pradesh police. Uttar Pradesh: In Uttar Pradesh’s city of Lucknow, students of Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama had planned to protest against the amended Citizenship Act but were stopped by the police from stepping outside the gates of the institution. NEW DELHI, DEC 16 (PTI): Lt Gen Manoj Mukund Naravane will be the next Chief of Army Staff helming the 1.3 millionstrong force, official sources said on Monday. Lt Gen Naravane is currently serving as Vice Chief of the Army. Sources said Naravane’s appointment has been cleared at the highest level, adding the government has followed the principle of seniority in the appointment. Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat is due to retire on December 31 after a threeyear stint. He is expected to be appointed as the country’s first Chief of Defence Staff. Before taking charge as vice chief of the Army Staff in September, Lt Gen Naravane was heading the Eastern Command of the Army which takes care of India’s nearly 4,000-km border with China.

Gov Ravi to take addl charge of Meghalaya DIMAPUR/SHILLONG, DEC 16 (NPN): President of India Monday appointed Nagaland Governor, RN Ravi, to discharge the functions of the Governor of Meghalaya, in addition to his own duties, during the absence on leave of Tathagata Roy, Governor of Meghalaya. Meghalaya High Court, Chief Justice Mohammad Rafiq will administer the oath of office to Ravi at the Darbar Hall of the Raj Bhavan here. Congress leaders led by party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra held a dharna at the India Gate on Monday in solidarity with students protesting against the amended Act. Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said the two-hour protest, which began at 4 pm, is to express solidarity with students from Jamia Millia Islamia University and other places. “The prime minister should answer what happened at the university yesterday. NPF legislator T. Torechu passes away; state funeral today DIMAPUR, DEC 16 (NPN): NPF legislator T. Torechu passed away on Monday at CIHSR, Dimapur. He leaves behind his wife, six sons and one daughter. He was 71. In a notification, the state government has announced to hold a state funeral on December 17 at 11 a.m. at Pungro town local ground. T. Torechu, did his early education from Pungro government school, higher secondary from GHS Tuensang and pursued higher studies from Fazal Ali College, Mokokchung. Before joining active politics, late Torechu served as government teacher and also held several posts in various organisations. Torechu won four consecutive elections from 2003 (as BJP) and from NPF ticket in 2008, 2013 and 2018. In 1982 Torechu lost as an Independent and in 1987 he

DIMAPUR, DEC 16 (NPN): Against the backdrop of the memorandum to chief minister by non-Naga communities of Dimapur, published in the local dailies, Dimapur District Citizen Forum (DDCF) held emergency meeting consecutively on December 15 and 16. The forum said that the house resolved to denounce the statement by “presidents and secretaries”, of non-Naga communities of Dimapur. After an apology was tendered by the concerned person(s) and the president of Marwari Samaj in front of all the members present in the meeting, DCCF said that the matter was resolved within the DDCF. Further, the house also resolved that no member/s of the DDCF will make any publication, which can hurt the sentiments of other members of the forum.

RBI opens NEFT transfer 24×7 NEW DELHI, DEC 16 (AGENCIES): Reser ve Bank of India operationalised 24×7 NEFT facility from 12 a.m. Monday. In the first eight hours, over 11 lakh NEFT transactions were settled, RBI said. In a series of tweets, RBI said: “RBI operationalized NEFT 24×7 basis from today 12:00 am. This ensures availability of anytime electronic funds transfer. RBI now joins an elite club of countries having payment systems which enable round the clock funds transfer and settlement of any value...” Customers of SBI, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, Punjab National Bank, ICICI Bank or any other commercial lender can now do National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) transactions 24×7. NEFT will now be available on any day of the week or month, including holidays.

SC to hear pleas against CAA on December 18 NEW DELHI, DEC 16 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear on December 18 a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019. Senior advocates and Congress leaders Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Kapil Sibal mentioned the pleas before the three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde. The bench, also comprising Justices BR Gavai and Surya Kant, decided to club all the petitions challenging the validity of the Act and hear them on Wednesday. More than 10 separate petitions have already been filed in the Supreme Court against the Act. Senior Assam Congress leaders have reportedly filed a petition in the apex court. AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi and Congress’ Lok Sabha lawmaker from Thrissur, Kerala, TN Prathapan also filed separate petitions. Meanwhile, the powerful North East Student’s Organisation Monday filed a petition in Supreme Court seeking stay and implementation of the CAA.

JCPI calls for meeting to discuss CAA, ILP DIMAPUR, DEC 16 (NPN): Joint Committee on Prevention of Illegal Immigrants (JCPI) has called for a meeting with all tribe hohos and civil society organizations on December 18 at Hotel Tourist Lodge at 11 a.m. In a press note, JCPI convenor K. Ghokheto Chopy and secretary Tia Longchar said the meeting will deliberate on the Citizenship Amendment Act, RIIN and ILP notification for Dimapur. Despite festive season and busy schedules, JCPI has urged the leaders to attend the meeting as the agendas were important, where an informed decision in the interest of all Nagas can be taken.

NUSU KC flays police action at Jamia varsity

DIMAPUR, DEC 16 (NPN): Nagaland University Students’ Union (NUSU), Kohima Campus has vehemently condemned the “atrocious actions” of police on the students of Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi on Sunday. In a press release, NUSU KC president Rhilo Mero and general secretary Longsthithung N Ngullie expressed shock at the “callous act” of police invading the varsities and brutally assaulting the students. The union said that police action led to disrupting the peaceful atmosphere. NUSU KC also affirmed support to those who were peacefully protesting against the Citizen Amendment Act. It said that the Act was a threat to country’s secular fabric and was “in no way favourable to the people of a democratic state”. The union hoped for a positive solution to the impending issue that was affecting the country as a whole. It also prayed for the safety of everyone and appealed for protesting in a non-violent manner. K Y M C
