EC rejects ballots of Congress MLAs who voted for BJP

GANDHINAGAR, AUG 8 (AGENCIES): After high political drama over Rajya Sabha polls in Gujarat on Tuesday night, the Congress was able breathe a sigh of relief after the Election Commission of India declared that the votes by Congress rebels-- Raghavji Patel and Bhola Gohil-- in favour of BJP was invalid since the two had shown their ballot paper to a person other than the party’s polling agent. EC late Tuesday night directed the Returning Officer to start counting of votes after segregating the votes in question. “If required we will take legal action”, Gujarat’s Dy CM, Nitinbhai Patel said after EC declared vote of two Congress MLAs as invalid. “Ever yone thought Amit Shah (BJP president) is always successful in unlawful, negative things but Gujarat proved this kind of authority won’t work,” Gujarat Congress president Bharatsinh Solanki said

soon after EC’s verdict came out in favour of Congress. Earlier, the BJP and Congress traded charges after counting of votes in the Gujarat Rajya Sabha polls got delayed, with the latter demanding cancellation of votes of its two MLAs for alleged violation of rules and the saffron party insisting that counting be taken up immediately. Congress was the first to move the Election Commission demanding cancellation of votes of its two disgruntled MLAs for allegedly showing their votes to persons other than the authorised party representatives. Congress leaders Randeep Surjewala and RPN Singh also produced a video of

the poll proceedings to the commission and demanded that votes of Gohil and Raghavjibhai be cancelled as per law since they violated the “secrecy of ballot”. According to the rules, voters for the Rajya Sabha elections have to show their ballots to authorised representative of their respective parties before casting them. Terming Congress’ objections as “baseless”, a delegation of BJP leaders, including Union ministers Arun Jaitley, Ravi Shankar Prasad and Piyush Goyal, approached the EC demanding immediate counting of votes, contending that validity of votes once put in ballot boxes cannot be questioned. Goyal told reporters

NTC reaffirms inclusive Naga political settlement DIMAPUR, AUG 8 (NPN): Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) through its media cell has reaffirmed that the council, in the interest of the Nagas, has been harping on inclusive political settlement, while understanding what political solution can bring sustainable peace and what can bring disaster to the Naga society. “When when we talk about solution, our division becomes the primary obstruction to such settlement,” NTC said. It however maintained that the magnanimity of six NNPGs, coming together to form a common platform—the Working Group (WG), has virtually mitigated gaps of divisions. This has given a ray of hope that “we, the Nagas, are not only capable of dividing ourselves but we are squarely able to come into unity too.” In this regard, NTC expressed gratitude to the six NNPGs for having reposed their faith in the mediation so initiated. On the strength of the Working

Group, NTC said it had approached the government of India (GoI) to take the group into its confidence so as to find amicable solution. NTC said GoI was working towards that end. Meanwhile, NTC has lauded Nagaland GBs Federation for having come out boldly in support of inclusive solution to the extent of meeting the Prime Minister with written representation on the same. Since GBs are the traditional custodians of our culture, customs and way of life, NTC said they are the appropriate platform to spell out what will be best for the people of Nagaland. NTC, NGBF, various civil bodies and Naga intellectuals have sufficiently conveyed their opinions on the issue to the representative of GoI in particular already, it said. Therefore, NTC said it was hopeful that the GoI would take “wise decision in the greater interest of the Nagas in particular and of the Nation in general.”

paid a second visit to the commission and insisted on their demand for immediate counting of the votes. The BJP has nominated Shah and Irani for two Rajya Sabha seats from the state and they would sail through. Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary Ahmed Patel is pitted against the saffron party’s Balwantsinh Rajput for the third seat. It has become a high-stakes battle for Congress, thanks to infighting and resignations, with the BJP fancying its prospects to win the third seat also, defeating Patel, who is seeking a fifth RS term. It is likely that even after the counting, either of the party of could take the matter to court.

NEW DELHI, AUG 8 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to make Yoga education compulsory in schools saying that it was for the Centre to take a call on such issues. A bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta dismissed a petition filed by an advocate to make Yoga compulsory in schools after Centre opposed the plea. “We are no body to say what should be taught in schools. It is none of our business. We cannot pass such order, “the bench said. In its affidavit, the human resource development ministry informed the SC, “Right To Education (RTE) Act does not specifically mention about the curriculum of yoga. As such, it cannot be concluded that yoga education has become an enforceable fundamental right. Yoga is an integral part of the curriculum of ‘Health and Physical Education’, which is a compulsory subject for Classes 1 to 10. To that extent, yoga has not been neglected in school education.”

The Centre also clarified that education figured in the concurrent list and a majority of schools were under the control of states and Union Territories. Hence, it was for states and Union Territories to ensure compliance of the provisions of NCF, under which yoga is an integral part of ‘Health and Physical Education’ at all levels of school education, it said. “Implementation of various subject areas, including yoga, depends upon states and UTs concerned,” an official said. “NCF 2005 provides that yoga may be introduced from the primary level onwards in informal ways, but formal introduction of yoga exercises should begin only from Class 6 onwards,” it said. “So far as schools affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education are concerned, which has adopted National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) curriculum and syllabi, ‘Health and Physical Education’ is compulsory for Class 1 to 10 and optional at Classes 11 and 12,” the Centre said.

DIMAPUR, AUG 8 (NPN): Chukitong Range Public Organization (CRPO) on Tuesday served a 30-day open ultimatum on Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) department demanding immediate posting of regular medical officer (MO) and to equip Primary Health Centre (PHC) Chukitong with all the available facilities in line with other PHCs. In a statement, CRPO chairman, Ezanimo Kikon and vice-chairman, Elhio Yanthan said that the lone PHC at Chukitong had been functioning without MO after the unfortunate and untimely demise of the then MO on January 12, 2017. CRPO said earlier, PHC Chukitong had two MOs, but one MO post and the state of the art dental equipments were taken away by the department. CRPO comprising of seven villages- Tsungiki, Koio, Chukitong, Mungya,

Seluku, Nungying and Thenhyayan, has also demanded that the department reinstate the post of MO and all equipments taken away from PHC Chukitong. CRPO warned that if their demands were not met within the given deadline, they would impose total indefinite blockade on NH 2 passing through their jurisdiction and that the department would be held responsible for any eventualities. In view of the above, CRPO said it had written to director H&FW on March 5, 2017 to restore the post of MO at the earliest. Again on June 12, the CRPO requested CMO Wokha for immediate adjustment of MO but the department failed to respond. This has compelled, CRPO to serve ultimatum on the department with the mandate of the Chukitong range, the statement added.

He said this during the celebration of the 25th anniversary of ASEANIndia Dialogue Partnership in Lao People’s Republic capital Vientiane yesterday, an official communique said here today. Mein said India is on the path to forge a strong partnership with ASEAN countries under the dynamic and visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi’s Act East Policy will be a game changer for the north eastern states of India vis-a-vis the Southeast Asian countries. Civil societies maintained that the people of the district were not against the construction of the prestigious National S p o r t s U n i ve r s i t y i n the area but against the “devilish act” of the state government. They alleged that the land was encroached “illegally” without the consent and knowledge of the land owner. They further alleged that government sidelined the matter even after they sent representations to the chief minister repeatedly. The chief minister instead of taking action blatantly claimed that there is no dispute in the construction site, they alleged. T h e h i g h headedness attitude of the state government has compelled the civil society organizations based in the district to come out and protest on the streets, they added. KSO has also threatened to take up volatile course of step if government failed to settle the dispute before going ahead with the ground work for the construction of National Sports University.

Congress leader Kapil Sibal showing photocopies of the two kinds of Rs 500 notes in the Rajya Sabha.

NEW DELHI, Aug 8 (IANS): The Congress on Tuesday alleged that two different kinds of Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes were printed post demonetisation, “jeopardising the credibility” of Indian currency, and demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi clear the air on the issue. The opposition party, which disrupted proceedings in the Rajya Sabha over the issue forcing its adjournment for the day, said the “discrepancies” in the printing of the new high denomination notes were in terms of their size, design and other features. It asked PM Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to explain as the issue “raises questions over the country’s financial structure”. The party, however, said that the different notes “are not counterfeit” currencies since they are all

Mehbooba calls on Farooq to discuss political situation S r inag a r , Au g 8 (IANS): In an unexpected move, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday called on opposition National Conference president Farooq Abdullah to discuss the prevailing political situation in the state. Mehbooba Mufti drove to the high-security Gupkar Road residence of Abdullah in the evening for the meeting, which was described as “cordial”. Posting a comment on the meeting, Abdullah’s son and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah posted on his widely followed Twitter handle: “Mehbooba Mufti called on JKNC President this evening to discuss the prevailing political situation in the state. It was a cordial meeting.” “With an aim to create a wider consensus amongst like minded parties in this battle to prevent Art 35A being struck down in the Supreme Court,” he said in another tweet.

HC slams CBI for not filing update in JNU student case New Delhi, Aug 8 (IANS): The case of missing Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Najeeb Ahmed was “not transferred to the CBI for fun”, said the Delhi High Court on Tuesday while slamming the agency for not filing a fresh report regarding the investigation in the case. A division bench of Justice G.S. Sistani and Justice Chander Shekhar slammed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for filing the same status report that it filed during the July 17 hearing. The bench asked the CBI to file a fresh status report before the next date of hearing on September 6. On July 17, the bench had asked the CBI to file a status report on the progress of the case.

printed under the aegis of the RBI and the ministry of finance and incorporated most of the security features published in the official website of the bank. Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal, who flagged the issue in the Rajya Sabha earlier in the day calling it the “biggest scam of the century”, said the opposition party would keep raising it in Parliament until the government explains its stand on the issue. The former Union minister also alleged that the demonetisation move “failed” to achieve its stated objectives of combating black money, corruption, counterfeit currency and terrorism. In this context, he demanded that the government explain the motive behind invalidating the old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes.

“First they should explain which dye was used (for printing the notes), what types of notes were printed, at which printing press the notes of different sizes were printed.” The difference in the currency notes, “jeopardises credibility of the currency. The Prime Minister, finance minister, RBI governor should come to the fore and explain,” Sibal told reporters here. He said that when demonetisation was announced, there were messages on social media alleging that leaders of the BJP had new Rs 2000 notes with them even as people queued up outside banks and ATMs. He also accused the ruling BJP of spending huge amount of money during Uttar Pradesh assembly polls held earlier this year. “How was that possible? The government should tell where the notes were printed,” he said. Sibal said, according to the RBI’s official website, the standard size of the Rs 500 note is 66 mm X 150 mm, whereas that of the Rs 2000 note is 66 mm X 166 mm. He claimed some Rs 500 notes were longer, allegedly ranging between 151 mm and 153 mm. The “discrepancy” with regard to length was found in case of Rs 2,000 notes too, he said and claimed some notes were 167 mm long.

Unrest in Darjeeling hills cost Bengal Rs 500 crore: Mamata K o lkat a , A u g 8 (IANS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said that to date, the total estimated loss due to the ongoing indefinite shutdown in the Darjeeling hills has been pegged at around Rs 550 crore. “The total estimated loss, including the damage to government property and loss of revenue due to shutdown of tea gardens, tourism and transport in Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts, amounts to Rs 550 crore,” she said in the assembly. Making a statement on the Darjeeling unrest in the House, she said the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha had called for an indefinite shutdown in Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts from June 12, 2017, and ever since, common people in the hills had been facing hardships. “GJM’s movement just before the expiry of the tenure of the GTA (Gorkhaland Territorial Administration the Darjeeling hills development body) is siginificant,” she said. CPI-M legislator Ashok Bhattacharya blamed the state government and the Chief Minister for raising the language issue in the hills and also said that the situation became worse after that. Banerjee criticised the CPI-M for “fishing in trou-

ble waters” and praised the Congress for not politicising the issue. She also blamed the CPI-M for misleading the House on the language issue. Banerjee’s comment irked the Left members and they walked out of the assembly. Congress MLA Shankar Malakar said time had come for all political parties and the central government to arrive at a solution. Banerjee said Chief Secretary had convened a meeting but the GJM did not attend it. The state government is willing to have talks with political parties in the hills only when violence is stopped and the ongoing strike withdrawn. Banerjee appealed to all hill parties to shun violence and restore normalcy in the region, so that common people could get a respite from the problems they had been facing due to the agitation.

A division bench of Justice Sanjeev Khanna and Justice Navin Chawla admitted the plea and said it would be heard on October 30. The plea filed by a former government employee, Kiran Pal Singh, said Assam Rifles functions under the administrative control of the Home Ministry but is headed by Army personnel who come under the Ministry of Defence, adding that force be given to one of the ministries as the dual leadership was causing administrative problems which could not be addressed. The plea, filed through advocate Abhishek Kumar Choudhar y, said: “The Home Ministry has always found it difficult to exercise control over the force as it comprised officers and personnel from the Army, which comes under the Ministry of Defence.”

Sonia Gandhi

New Delhi, Aug 8 (IANS): Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday said that “self-appointed vigilantes” were a threat to liberty and enemies of pluralism and expressed her anguish at the “assault on freedom”. Addressing a special

Congress Working Committee meeting here on the 75th anniversary of the Quit India Movement, Gandhi said the party must always defend liberty and freedom of individuals and institutions. “I am anguished by the assault on freedom. Self-appointed vigilantes are a threat to liberty and an enemy of pluralism and diversity,” she said. In his remarks, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed deep concern about India’s youth and farmers and said multiple problems continue to persist after demonetization and implementation of the Goods and Services Tax.

Victims of male chauvinism

W

hen it comes to such issues as sexual harassment, the debate often leads to the offence being seen by some feminists as another example of how females have to suffer because of male generally treat females as sex objects. That is not true but yes there are deviants who need either psychological treatment or time inside prison as safety measure but all males cannot be blamed. Though stalking is an offence and not uncommon, yet female victims hardly complain since police often don’t take complaints seriously and also because victims loathe having to fight long and tiresome legal court battles. The recent Chandigarh stalking case involving the state BJP chief of Haryana has rightly attracted national attention . Haryana government has been drawing flak from the Opposition for the pressure that was allegedly brought on the Chandigarh Police to dilute the case against Vikas Barala, son of Subhash Barala state BJP chief of Haryana. Vikas and his friend Ashish Kumar, were earlier arrested for allegedly stalking and intimidating the 29-year-old woman last week. However, though both the accused committed an non bailable offence, they were released on bail after being booked under bailable sections of the IPC and the Motor Vehicles Act. The Chandigarh stalking case has caught national attention since the victim and the suspects belong to influential families. The girl displayed unusual courage and presence of mind in calling for police help. Creditably, the Chandigarh Police responded fast but had to go slow when politics kicked in as the offender happened to be the son of an important state politician. Going by the sequence of events narrated by the girl, the police has apparently mishandled the case –either out of ignorance of the law or under pressure. According to media reports, the police had first applied three sections of the IPC - stalking, wrongful restraint and drunk driving. When one of the offenders tried to force open a door of the girl’s car, it no longer remained just a stalking case but attempted kidnap and also invited Sections 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code. The police failure to slap the abduction charge has undone all the good work it did initially when the distress call was made. Haryana Chief minister referred to the crime in a casual way saying that the accused will be punished if found guilty and all the while, the case against the two criminals made as mere traffic violations. In other countries, stalking is treated like attempt to abduct or commit murder and invites serious punishment. In India, crimes against women are taken as “normal” and some political leaders even questioning the character of the victims for “inciting/exciting” the baser instincts of the male species. Once JDU leader Sharad Yadav made a bizarre analogy when he said the honour of vote is bigger and important than the honour of a daughter. Congress MP from Bengal Abhijit Mukherjee and son of former president Pranab Mukherjee had shocked everyone when he labelled rape victims as those “highly dented and painted women”. Mulayam Singh Yadav also has this to say about his opposition against death sentence for rapists; that “handing death sentence for rape is not fair... boys make mistakes... there will be changes in the law if we come to power.”

DailyDevotion Prayer in the Father’s Honor

…that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. —Luke 1:35 If the Son of God has been born into my human flesh, then am I allowing His holy innocence, simplicity, and oneness with the Father the opportunity to exhibit itself in me? What was true of the Virgin Mary in the history of the Son of God’s birth on earth is true of every saint. God’s Son is born into me through the direct act of God; then I as His child must exercise the right of a child— the right of always being face to face with my Father through prayer. Do I find myself continually saying in amazement to the commonsense part of my life, “Why did you want me to turn here or to go over there? ‘Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?’ ” (Luke 2:49). Whatever our circumstances may be, that holy, innocent, and eternal Child must be in contact with His Father. Am I simple enough to identify myself with my Lord in this way? Is He having His wonderful way with me? Is God’s will being fulfilled in that His Son has been formed in me (see Galatians 4:19), or have I carefully pushed Him to one side? Oh, the noisy outcry of today! Why does everyone seem to be crying out so loudly? People today are crying out for the Son of God to be put to death. There is no room here for God’s Son right now— no room for quiet, holy fellowship and oneness with the Father. Is the Son of God praying in me, bringing honor to the Father, or am I dictating my demands to Him? Is He ministering in me as He did in the time of His manhood here on earth? Is God’s Son in me going through His passion, suffering so that His own purposes might be fulfilled? The more a person knows of the inner life of God’s most mature saints, the more he sees what God’s purpose really is: to “…fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ…” (Colossians 1:24). And when we think of what it takes to “fill up,” there is always something yet to be done.

Post-mortem Comedy film acting leads NPF central media on Neiphiu Rio’s acceptance as interim president to life imprisonment!

T

he Bible Teaches: ‘Do not let your Right Hand know what your Left Hand has given’; a Pangan traditional Angami woman would ask the Giver: ‘why do you give this to me, give it to One more rightfully deserved?’, a civilized person first enquires: ‘can I give this to you?’ before something is given. Two unsuspecting Asian girls were paid money to act in a fake comedy Film they practiced smearing Lotion on the face of unknown Travelers in the Airport the Film Directors photographing them: a Malaysian and a Vietnamese Girls may both get a Life Imprisonment from the Court for their Acting! Some Koreans engaged a Vietnamese girl and a Malaysian girl to smear Face Powder on the face of strangers in the Airport for a supposed fake Comedy Film on Payment. They practiced it in the Airport while the Directors photographed them and the Court now may give the two innocent unsuspecting girls to Life imprisonment for smearing highly deadly poisonous VX on the face of the Half Brother of North Koreas’ deadly Dictator Jun Un. The North Korea Presiden’s Elder Half Brother died 27 minutes later in South Korea and two Korean suspects supposedly the Photographers flew to North Korea immediately on the same day. The two innocent girls may get Life Imprisonment Sentence from the Court. In the latest Nagaland Assembly Seat Bye-Election to the vacant Northern Angami-I Constituency has just recently concluded and even had a Maha Mela of success celebration in the NBCC Convention Centre near Nagaland Secretariat. It has now become an open Secret that Money flowed like Water from a Pipe from one of the Candidates and from the other also like Water from crevice of the rock on a mountain side. There were only two Candidates, both from the grand old Kohima Village and both candidates from the same Lhisemie joint-Thinuo, rumored the richest Khel with 6 Crorepatis. It could well be true both of the Candidates could swear they

did not personally and directly distributed money for purchase of Votes. But both of them could be like the two Asian girls in the Jail claiming they have innocently acted that killed the Elder Un. Both the Candidates violated the Church Rules and the Kohima Village Council Resolution Directives for Clean Election in Nagaland. The NBCC has been shouting hoarse for quite some time for Clean Election. The Church Council appears to be growing more and more Realistic but not enough yet to clean a wretched land. The NBCC could be more realistic than just making statements and expressing regrets at the wretched political scenes in the State of Nagaland. Like Paul rebuking Peter ‘in front of them all’(Gal 2: 14): “When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of them all, you are a Jew yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?” It is heard that some baptized Christians, Village Council functionaries and even some serving Pastors have received ‘lefafa’ and naked ‘Currency Notes’ during the Election Period from the direction of the Candidates. The NBCC could learn more specific facts from some honest ‘Whistle Blowers’ for the LORD and then send letter to the two Candidates with what Peter had asked from Anania and Safira. NBCC may not question any person to death, but certainly it can make recommendation to the Parent Church of the Candidates to desist from partaking the LORD SUPPER with any Culprit for 1 year if found guilty. The Council may send a Copy of their letter to Kohima Village Council to help Cleanse our State with actions against Violators of the nice Village Council Resolutions. The BJP and Politicians cannot blind God from looking at Nagaland. Thepfulhouvi Solo, IFS Retd (RR 68), Retd. Principal Secretary, Nagaland

(People’s yearning for acceptable and fruitful leadership compelled Mr. Neiphiu Rio to take over the reins of the party as the interim NPF president)

T

he people’s mandate given to Naga People’s Front (NPF) through their franchise and the hard work and contributions of the party workers and leaders at different levels and different regions is well within the memory of the party with sincere appreciation. The NPF shall put in the best possible efforts to understand the needs of the people at the grass root level. It is a truism that, after years of struggle and hardship, an almost none existent party could take over the reins of power through people’s mandate in 2003, forming the NPF led DAN-l Government followed by the DAN-ll in 2008 through the people’s verdict and the subsequent overwhelming mandate of 2013 general election wherein the NPF alone could produce 38 MLAs. The party loyalists who elected the NPF led DAN under Rio’s leadership to power by their sacred mandate for three consecutive elections, including the general public cannot be taken for a ride. Unfortunately, Party leaders and functionaries equally are utterly exhausted, pained and provoked by the continues, disorderly handling of the party function and administration, to serve the narrow and vested interests of a select few individuals of the party power that be, wherein unconstitutional suspensions and expulsions of party workers, organizational leaders including Legislators of late, became ridiculously random that calls for immediate damage control. Under the prevailing pathetic atmosphere within the NPF, created by the autocratic and dictatorial functioning of the party leadership, NPF is frustratingly collapsing and losing its hard earned, venerable regional stature and credentials in the eye of the citizens. In the earlier two (2003 and 2008) terms of the state Government prior to the present term, (2013-2017) Neiphiu Rio had led the government as the Chief

Health : A collective responsibility

(From previous issue) There should be a collective effort to conduct quality Village Health and Nutrition Days in every village. It is encouraging to see that officials from ICDS and health department have started to coordinate in some places. Undernutrition indicators in children from NFHS-4(National Family Health Survey)show stark variations between districts with some showing alarming levels of even Severe Acute Malnutrition (as high as 9.8%). Such districts need focus and prioritisation in the state action plan. The department has a huge responsibility in shaping the future of children and mothers in Nagaland. 2. Department of School Education: Public schools have penetrated to the most interior areas in the state. The quality of human resources manning the public education system is second to none. There is only a win-win situation here. The potential of teachers to bring about social behavioural changes in the community is much unutilised. Proper hand washing (after mid-day meals), hygiene and sanitation talk, Immunization, nutrition education, tobacco control and many more can be done effectively by these trusted people in the society. Centrally sponsored programmes like WIFS (Weekly Iron Folic Acid Supplementation), midday meals, School Health Programme, Diarrhoea control fortnight and deworming (National Deworming Days) are schools specific health programmes which needs utmost dedication from the school department and teachers.Teachers have been at the war front in tackling many public health issues. The

eradication of Poliomyelitis from India would not have been possible had it not been for the active involvement of teachers in many states. 3. Rural Development/ PHED : Public Health has its origins in sanitation and drinking water. I am sure more lives were saved by an improvement in sanitation and access to clean drinking water than by the discovery of some drugs. Some health units in Nagaland have major issues with access to 24/7 running water and proper toilets. For instance, conducting institutional deliverieswithout running water becomes difficult since the risk of infectionmayoutweigh the benefits. It gets more relevant in this age of antibiotic resistance where hospital acquired infections are getting more difficult to treat. Hospital waste management is again an area which needs major investment and coming together of all allied departments. Rural sanitation and waste management has been added under MGNREGA.Health should come before the rest. It is of much essence that ‘health’ is reflected and given due importance in the village development plan 4. Food and Civil Supplies/ Agriculture/ Horticulture/Fishery: While there is an explosion of multi cuisine restaurants in some towns, we have a larger chunk of population highly dependent at the mercy of the sun and rains.Public Distribution System has to be revitalised urgently to meet our growing needs in the realisation of the much talked about Food Security. Denying entitlements to children and the poor is a crime. Many regions are still on a heavily

skewed carbohydrate only diet. Diversification of diet becomes very important if we really have to address malnutrition. The allied agriculture departments should invest in areas where undernutrition indicators are the worst. We are not meeting our health goals anytime if nutrition is not addressed holistically. 5. Economics and Statistics: Public health and planning heavily depend on valid data. SRS (Sample registration system) and NFHS (National family health survey) is where the state turns to for mortality and service delivery indicators. But we have problems with the sampling units of both. For smaller states, Civil Registration System (CRS) becomes the most reliable option to understand mortality and fertility indicators till the district level. While birth registration has greatly improved, registration of deaths is one area that seriously needs a relook. The HMIS (Health management Information system) under National Health Mission and CRS under economics and statistics can work together to understand deeper. 6. Administration: Coordination between various departments for improving health indicators is a big task we are faced with now.The administration has a big challenge to lead and coordinate these sister departments in the form of task force meetings, supervisory visits and prioritising health in the state, district and block development plans. When India was declared Polio free, the first credit went to the general administration, and for many right reasons. (To be concluded) Dr.Longri Kichu, Consultant, UNICEF

Minister who had displayed an excellent quality of leadership by providing stability to the government and helped ensure disciplined management of the party affairs as well, and thus, taking the welfare of the people into the path of progress. On Rio’s departure as the lone Member of Parliament representing Nagaland state in 2014, there has been a marked mismanagement in the party led state government as well as in the affairs of the party under the stewardship of Dr Shürhozelie Liezietsu as the President of the party (NPF). There were no person to check and balance the arbitrary behavior of the erstwhile President. Noticeably, he started behaving in an arbitrary manner by adopting bipartisan and monopolistic policies in running not only the affairs of the party but also interfering in functioning of the Government with the association of very few selected courtiers in utter disregard to the democratic practices of participative approaches giving due regard to the norms and practices of the party. The people of Nagaland deserve a Government that can deliver pragmatic, realistic economic and developmental progress, and transparent governance to fulfill the desires and wishes of the people, and this can be possible only through acceptable and able leadership, for which our tall leader with a proven track record, a three consecutive term, dynamic and visionary Chief Minister and presently the sitting Nagaland State’s lone Hon’ble Member, Lok Sabha Mr. Neiphiu Rio, whose leadership resurrected the defunct regional party (then NPC), rechristened it as Naga People’s Front (NPF), groomed and raised it to the present stature is the answer. The people’s yearning and demand for an accommodative and sincere leadership and, further to it, with more than two third majority of the NPF Legislators having unanimously chosen him has thus, compelled Mr. Neiphiu Rio to accept and

take over the reins of the party as the interim NPF President. Giving pretentious calls for reconciliation, viciously severing ties with the BJP and revealing their hidden animosity towards the BJP MLAs after they (BJP) extended support to Mr. T.R. Zeliang is proof provided by themselves that they speak one thing, but do exactly the opposite. Dr Shurhozelie and his followers should be congratulated for confessing to the people of Nagaland that they used the BJP MLAs to further their own vested interests of remaining in power at any cost. Dr Shurhozelie’s removal as President of the NPF was demanded with reason, and vision for the NPF’s future prospects, which sadly, is being shackled by redundant mindset and belligerence. Despite the standing Party principle of ‘One Man One Post’, over the years Dr. Shurhozelie continued to hold dual posts of Party President as well as Cabinet Minister and recently, Party President and Chief Minister, and began to treat the party as his personal property. This tendency did not end there. He even attempted to convert the Chief Minister’s office into a private nursery by appointing his son as Adviser to Chief Minister (Cabinet Status with equivalent pay and perks) with the MTF portfolio; the irony being that both father and son were not even elected members of the NLA at the time, and despite having 59 lawfully elected Members, nepotism was flourishing in the State’s highest political office. The people/citizens are the stakeholders of the NPF and at the same time the people are the assets and strength of this grand old regional political party. This very crucial and difficult moment, aimed at change for the better; needs to be understood by all NPF functionaries, party men, women and hon’ble legislators in supporting and upholding the party commitment. NSCN/GPRN boycotts Indian Independence Day in Naga territories

T

he NSCN/GPRN reiterates the resolve to boycott celebration of Indian National days throughout Naga inhabited territories under Indian occupation. In this context, the NSCN/GPRN imposes ban on celebration of Indian Independence Day on August 15 and appeals to every Naga nationals to abstain themselves from participating in the said event. Our country is under coercive occupation, we must employ every means to resist and defy the illegitimate foreign rule and expose the “ hollowness of the so hallowed “ Indian democracy that uses atrocious military might to crush and suppress the rights and identity of the indigenous people. Since the last six-seven decades, the GOI had been continuing her relentless onslaught all over Naga country through massive military deployment empowered with unethical and inhuman AFPSA, Disturbed Area Act, Terrorist tag etc, regardless, the NSCN/GPRN had never been deterred and will keep up the revolutionary course to thwart and expel the occupational authority from Naga soil. Every Naga citizen must rise to the occasion, confront the illegal colonization, reassert our birthright, uphold the

legacy passed onto us by our pioneers and commit oneself to liberate our nation from alien hegemony of India and Myanmar. Though thousands of Nagas have perished, thousands have been martyred, maimed and scarred for life yet thousands more will rise to continue the battle until our God given freedom is retained. If the Hebrews had to bear 400 years of servitude, the Nagas are determined to endure even millennia to regain her sovereign independence and to live in peace and harmony among the community of nations. If India is willing to sacrifice thousands of her innocent soldiers to invade and posses the country that never belonged to them, the Nagas are fully determined to sacrifice in millions for what is so dear and rightfully ours. The NSCN/GPRN fervently urge upon the Nagas to press on and never to despair even in the face of the mighty adversaries, for the idolaters and Godless nation cannot hold to ransom the tiny but righteous and God fearing people for too long. It is therefore but for the Nagas to live up to our commitment “Nagaland for Christ” and the deliverance in due time will come from God. Issued by- MIP,NSCN/GPRN

Sir,

Start work at the earliest

Of late there has been a lot of reports about mishaps or impending mishaps involving bridges specially in Dimapur. Pictures of broken bridges and worn out bridges have been doing the rounds both in newspaper dailies and social media. The inspection of the bridges by the honourable chief minister and his colleagues and subsequent action/plan initiated deserves appreciation. However another photo of Doyang bridge worn out so much so, that a portion of the bridge has become transparent and the water and trees below can be seen. This bridge and road being a lifeline to the people of Wokha district it would be much appreciated and wise if the department concerned would start repair work at the earliest before further damage is done or we would be having our very own transparent bridge similar to the popular glass-bottomed transparent suspension bridge in China. Babri Masjid site is our property: Shia Waqf tells SC

The three-judge Bench of the court, by a 2:1 majority, said the land be partitioned equally among three parties — the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla. On July 21, a bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar said that it would soon take a decision to list the matter for early hearing. The court’s remark had come on a plea of BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, who sought urgent listing and hearing of the matter. Swamy had said the main appeals against the High Court order are pending for the last seven years in the apex court and these required urgent hearing. He had also said that a separate petition was filed by him seeking the enforcement of his right to worship without much hassle at the site. The BJP leader had told the court that he was allowed by the apex court to intervene in the matter and is seeking expeditious disposal of the cases.

Job loss due to automation won’t affect India: Govt

New Delhi, Aug 8 (IANS): The government on Tuesday said that job loss through automation in India should not be a matter of concern as the “growth momentum” of the economy will result in new job opportunities. A 2016 World Bank report titled “Digital Dividends” speculates that automation threatens 69 per cent jobs in India. However, Minister of State for Finance Arjun Ram Meghwal said that the report “inter alia also states that ‘even if technologically feasible, large-scale net job destruction due to automation should not be a concern for most developing countries in the

short term”. “The government is also of a similar view,” Meghwal said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha. “Even in medium to long term growth of Indian economy of over seven per cent and steps being taken to enhance the growth momentum will result in further creation of new job opportunities and absorption of replaced labour, if any,” he said. He said that employment generation has been one of the most important priorities of the Narendra Modi government. “Employment generation is both a cause and consequence of economic growth and is impacted by

demographic shifts and technological transformations. In order to improve the employability of youth, around 20 ministries run skill development scheme across 70 sectors.” Meghwal said the government has taken various steps for generating employment like encouraging the private sector, fast tracking various projects involving substantial investment and increasing public expenditure on schemes like PM’s Employment Generation Programme, MGNREGS, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana, Deen Dayal Antyodaya Yojana and National Urban Livelihoods Mission.

Varnika Kundu

Replying to this, Kundu told NDTV on Tuesday: “It is none of his business, it is my business and my family’s what I do and where I go. If it wasn’t for men like these, I wouldn’t be unsafe going out whether it was 12 a.m. or 2 a.m. or 4 a.m.”

“If it happens at night it’s my fault? Can the men not control their urges at night? Why am I being questioned? I am the one who was under attack... but they are not questioned,” the 29-year-old said. She added that the evidence supports her version of the incident, quelling rumours that she met with a car accident. Kundu said that she didn’t stop at the petrol pump, didn’t hit anybody’s car but rather her car was chased relentlessly. “If there has been a collision, wouldn’t there be an evidence?” she questioned.

has been filed within few days of the apex court agreeing to fast-track the hearing on a batch of appeals challenging the Allahabad High Court verdict on the land dispute in the case. The Waqf Board has sought time from the top court for setting up of a committee for exploring an amicable resolution of the vexatious issue. Assailing the stand of the Sunni Central Waqf Board, it said, “...since Babri Masjid was a Shia Waqf Board property, Shia Central Waqf Board UP

The Shia Board is one of the parties in the pending appeals in the apex court. Recently, a three-judge Bench comprising Justices Dipak Misra, Ashok Bhushan and S.A. Nazeer has been constituted by Chief Justice J.S. Khehar to hear a batch of petitions challenging the Allahabad High Court verdict in the Ayodhya land dispute case from August 11. The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court, in 2010, ruled a three-way division of the disputed 2.77 acres area at the Ram JanambhoomiBabri masjid site in Ayodhya.

NEW DELHI, Aug 8 (PTI): The government has formed a committee in its bid to make drugs more affordable in the country, Parliament was informed today. “Government has constituted a committee of joint secretaries for ensuring enhanced affordability, availability and accessibility of drugs for the citizens,” Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilisers Mansukh L Mandaviya said in a written reply to Lok Sabha. Elaborating on the terms of reference of the committee, the minister said it would suggest ways to make pricing policy in favour of poor patients. The committee would also review the scope of Drugs (Price Control) Order 2013 (DPCO 2013) and suggest ways for strengthening the regulatory provisions of the order. It will also delve into making the existing mechanisms for collection of market based data on prices of medicines more robust and stream lined and suggest ways for strengthening the existing pharmaceutical database management system.

Opposition Congress, supported by the TMC and the JD(U), today forced adjournment of the proceedings in the Rajya Sabha over what it called as the “biggest scam of this century” in the printing of two different sizes for the new currencies. government was the reason for his exit. He also dismissed existence of dual power centres in NITI Aayog saying, “You go and talk to my staff.” “You have to ask those who are writing those reports ... I can only tell you (that) no institution can run with two or more power centres. There has to be one power centre,” he said. The erstwhile Planning Commission, like the NITI Aayog, was headed by Prime Minister and had a vice-chairman. It, however, did not have a CEO. Also, unlike the last Planning Commission vice chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Panagariya though enjoying cabinet rank, does not attend Cabinet meetings. Panagariya is scheduled to leave Niti Aayog on August 31 and will be succeeded by well-known economist Rajiv Kumar.

NEW DELHI, Aug 8 (PTI): The government on Tuesday asserted that the new 500 and 2,000 rupee notes have single unique dimension, a statement that came on a day when opposition parties led by the Congress stalled proceedings in the Rajya Sabha alleging that notes having different sizes. “Bank notes in each denomination has a distinct dimension. On the phone, he said he was told he will be vicechairman and “beyond that I knew nothing. I said OK. I want to do this so I accepted.” Panagariya, who took over the reins of a body that was set up after dismantling the Planning Commission that used to set five-year growth roadmaps, dismissed reports of any differences or dual power centres in NITI Aayog were reasons for his exit. “No, no, no,” he said, when asked if the numerous occasions NITI Aayog had difference of opinions with other wings of the

New Delhi, Aug 8 (PTI): Gold prices eased by Rs 70 to Rs 29,350 per ten grams at the bullion market Tuesday owing to slackened demand from local jewellers and a weak trend overseas. However, silver edged up by Rs 45 to Rs 38,370 per kg on scattered deals from industrial units and coin makers. Traders said apart from a weak trend overseas, easing demand from local jewellers and retailers, mainly led to decline in gold prices. Globally, gold fell by 0.09 percent to USD 1,257.30 an ounce in New York in yesterday’s trade. Market remained closed yesterday on account of ‘Raksha Bandhan’. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 percent and 99.5 percent purity fell by Rs 70 each to Rs 29,350 and Rs 29,200 per ten gram, respectively. N Korea threatens physical actions after UN sanctions

PYONGYANG/WASHINGTON, AUG 8 (IANS): North Korea on Tuesday threatened to take physical action after a new package of sanctions was imposed against the country by the UN Security Council, which Pyongyang denounced as illegal and a terrorist act. In a statement, Pyongyang charged back against the latest sanctions as a punitive measure for the regime’s ongoing missile tests, and launched new threats against the US, as well as the rest of the countries that support Washington, reports Efe news. Washington and its allies “should not forget that we are ready to ruthlessly take strategic measures involving physical actions by fully mobilizing our national power,” a spokesperson for the North Korean Asia-Pacific Peace Committee said in a statement published by the official news agency KCNA. The committee, affiliated with the Workers’ Party of North Korea, also accused the US of forcing

other countries to adopt the sanctions through fear, and dismissed the UN resolution as a terrorist act against Pyongyang. In a separate statement released on Tuesday by KCNA, the Kim Jong-un regime also blamed Seoul for conducting live fire exercises near the western border with North Korea, and threatened the South that it “can turn western front-line islands and even Seoul into a sea of flame”. The statements from Pyongyang come after its first direct statement on

Monday regarding the UN sanctions package, criticising those measures and threatening to retaliate against the US. North Korea argues that its nuclear and missile programs are only aimed at deterring an eventual invasion from the US, a country with which the regime has been technically at war for more than 60 years. The latest UN sanctions come as a response to North Korea’s first intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch on July 4, which was a successful mile-

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley has called the new set of UN sanctions on North Korea as a “gut-punch” to Pyongyang, squeezing the flow of the defiant nation’s economic lifeblood to punish it for its nuclear and missile tests. “It was a gut-punch to North Korea, to let them know the international community is tired of it and we’re going to start fighting back,” the top Indian-American diplomat told Fox News on Monday, in reference to the sweeping UN sanctions. “Every dollar of revenue that the North Korean government gets, they’re not feeding their people with it. They’re using it towards a nuclear weapons system. Going after these sanctions is going after their ability to build these missiles,” she said.

Iran’s Rouhani presents new male-only cabinet TEHRAN, AUG 8 (AGENCIES): Iranian President Hassan Rouhani put forward a new cabinet line-up on Tuesday that again included no women, despite criticism of their absence from his reformist allies, reports AFP. There were no major changes to Rouhani’s government, which is expected to continue his push for greater foreign investment and a technocratic approach to reviving the country’s stagnant economy. He did replace the defence minister, Major General Hossein Dehghan, with his deputy, General Amir Hatami -- the first time in more than two decades that the post has been filled by someone from the regular army rather than the elite Revolutionary Guards. The deputy economy minister, Masoud Karbasian, also replaced his boss, Ali Tayebnia. Key names in Iran’s efforts to rebuild ties with the West -- Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh -- retained their positions.

GENEVA, AUG 8 (agencies): Venezuelan security forces have wielded excessive force to suppress protests, killing dozens, and have arbitrarily detained 5,000 people since April, including 1,000 still in custody, the United Nations human rights office said on Tuesday. According to Reuters, the UN human rights office called on the government of President Nicolas Maduro to rein in security forces and investigate alleged abuses, release people arbitrarily detained, and ensure the protection of the ousted Attorney-General Luisa Ortega. On Friday, Venezuela inaugurated a new legislative superbody that is expected to rewrite the constitution and give vast powers to Maduro’s ruling Socialist Party, defying protests and worldwide condemnation

that it undermines democratic freedoms. “We are concerned that the situation in Venezuela is escalating and these human rights violations show no signs of abating,” U.N. human rights spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told a news briefing in Geneva. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein said in a statement: “These violations have occurred amid the breakdown of the rule of law in Venezuela, with constant attacks by the Government against the National Assembly and the AttorneyGeneral’s Office.” “The responsibility for the human rights violations we are recording lies at the highest levels of Government,” he added. NAIROBI, AUG 8 (AFP): Kenyans began voting today in general elections headlined by a too-close-to-call battle between incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta and his rival Raila Odinga, sparking fears of violence in east Africa’s richest economy. Long lines of voters snaked outside of polling stations around the country, many of them camping out from before midnight, under heavy security. Voting got underway shortly after 6am (0300 GMT) and all eyes are on an electronic voter identification and tallying system whose success is seen as crucial to a smooth election. In Nairobi’s largest slum Kibera, an opposition stronghold, angry shouts rang out due to a 15 minute delay, but calm swiftly returned as polling stations opened. “I voted Raila, because he will be so much better to us. But if he does not win, it’s ok. It’s a democracy after all. Really, there’s no need for violence,” said Tom Mboya, 43, who works in

construction. Tensions soared in the last days of the campaign with the murder of a top election official and opposition claims that one of its vote tallying centres was raided by police, heightening a feverish atmosphere of conspiracy and suspicion. The polls are seen as a litmus test of Kenya’s progress since a disputed 2007 election sparked violence which left more than 1,100 dead and 600,000 displaced. Odinga, 72, flagbearer of the NASA coalition, is tak-

ing his fourth and likely final stab at the presidency. He claims elections in 2007 and 2013 were stolen from him and right up until the eve of the vote, insisted that Ken ya t ta ’s Ju bi l e e Pa r t y planned to rig Tuesday’s presidential election. Elections in 2013 were marred by the widespread failure of the electronic system, forcing officials to revert to manual counting of the vote. However Odinga took his grievances to the courts instead of the streets, where he lost.

The status of the president’s partner appears to be a sensitive issue in France following a series of scandals in the past few decades, including Macron predecessor Francois Hollande’s complex private life. There hasn’t been a presidential spouse in the Elysee Palace since 2012, when former President Nicolas Sarkozy and his supermodel wife Carla Bruni left. Hollande entered office in 2012 with his girlfriend Valerie Trierweiler at his side, but she left him after a tabloid magazine exposed Hollande’s secret affair with actress Julie Gayet in 2014. Gayet has never publicly appeared by Hollande’s side.

French president Macron wants to give a role to his wife PARIS, AUG 8 (AGENCIES): French President Emmanuel Macron wants to formalize the role of the president’s wife amid controversy over the cost and status of the first lady, reports AP. The president’s office is preparing a formal communication in coming days, Brigitte Macron’s office said Tuesday. During his presidential campaign, the 39-yearold outspoken centrist promised more “transparency” on the issue. France’s first lady doesn’t have an official status. As the president’s popularity drops in polls, more than 270,000 people have signed a petition in the past few weeks against the plan to grant a taxfunded budget to finance his wife’s activities. anti-government forces looted weapons during a weekend raid on a military base and frustration over what some see as an ineffectual opposition leadership boils over. The U.N. human rights office, in preliminary findings based on 135 interviews in Panama and from Geneva in June and July, said it had investigated 124 deaths, and found at least 46 attributable to security forces and 27 to pro-gover nment armed groups, with the rest unclear. “Witnesses spoke of security forces firing tear gas and buckshot at anti-Government protestors without warning. Several of the individuals interviewed said tear gas canisters were used at short range, and marbles, buckshot and nuts and bolts were used as ammunition,” Shamdasani said. Ill-treatment and even torture have been reported in detention, while several hundred demonstrators have been brought before military rather than civilian courts, she said. “Tactics used included electric shocks, beatings, including with helmets and sticks while handcuffed, hanging detainees by the wrists for long periods, suffocation with gas, and threats of killings – and in some cases threats of sexual violence – against the detainees or their families,” she added.

Nice, Aug 8 (IANS): French football club Nice has announced the signing of Dutch veteran attacking midfielder Wesley Sneijder on a free transfer from Turkish outfit Galatasaray. Sneijder passed his medical for the Ligue 1 club early Monday and signed a one-year deal with an option for another year, reports Efe. The Dutch international’s contract with Galatasaray expired June 30. Sneijder, 33, is set to wear the No.10 jersey at Nice, according to the Ligue 1 web site. After starting his career in 2002 at Amsterdambased AFC Ajax, Sneijder went to win La Liga and the Copa del Rey with Real Madrid and was part of a Champions League title squad at Inter Milan before joining Galatasaray.

agency. “I thought a lot about my family, my country, my future and the well-being of the national team,” Guerra told reporters. “I’ve reached an age at which I no longer have the same motivation to try to help the team to qualify for the World Cup. It’s time for a new generation of players to take their chances,” he added.

PALLEKELE, Aug 8 (PTI): Veteran left-arm spinner Rangana Herath has been ruled out of Sri Lanka’s third Test against India owing to back pain. With Sri Lanka already losing the series and a hectic Test season ahead, the team management decided on resting the veteran spinner. Herath was injured in the first Test while fielding but recovered sufficiently to play in the second Test. Herath joins the list of other Sri Lankan players like allrounder Asela Gunaratne, pacers Suranga Lakmal and Nuwan Pradeep, who have all been ruled out of the series. In the 39-year-old’s absence, left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara will be leading the spin challenge, a role he has been prepared for as and when Herath retires.

Pak wants U-19 Asia Cup to be moved out of India

Karachi, Aug 8 (PTI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Tuesday said it wanted the upcoming Under-19 Asia Cup to be moved out of India to a neutral venue due to security concerns. India is scheduled to host the tournament in November in Bangalore but a top PCB official said given the present diplomatic situation between the two countries, it would request the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) to relocate the venue at its meeting later this week at Colombo. “We will be taking up this issue with the Asian Cricket Council when its development committee meeting is held in Colombo this weekend,” the PCB official told PTI. He said the PCB didn’t want its players to go through the tensions of not knowing whether they will be able to travel to Bangalore for the event or not. “In recent times visas have been refused to number of Pakistani sporting teams and we don’t think the conditions in India are conducive for our team to play there,” he said. Najam Sethi, who is set to be elected as Shaharyar’s successor, confirmed that Pakistan wanted the Under19 Asia Cup to be shifted out of India.

Italy’s Errani denies using banned substance

Sara Errani

Madrid, Aug 8 (IANS): Italy’s Sara Errani, who was suspended by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) for two months after she failed a drug test, said she never took any banned substances. “I never took, in my life and during my career, any prohibited substance,” the 30-year-old Errani said in a statement posted in her Twitter account on Monday, reports Efe. A urine sample that Errani provided on February 16 and was tested in Montreal contained letrozole, which is on the World AntiDoping Agency’s prohibited substances list, the ITF said in a statement. Errani, for her part, said letrozole “is present in Femara, a medicine my mother has been using daily since 2012 for therapeutic purpose, further to a sur-

gery for breast cancer, and therefore is present in the house where I am currently living.” The tennis player said she never took any letrozole and suspected that “accidental food contamination occurred at some stage in the house”. “I feel very frustrated. I had not done anything wrong,” Errani said. The ITF said Errani’s results, points and prize money earned between February 16, when she provided the positive sample, and June 7, when she passed another drug test, would be disqualified. Deulofeu, a Barcelona academy product who is back with the organisation after four seasons spent with Everton, Sevilla and AC Milan, opened the scoring with a goal in the 6th minute before assisting on the subsequent goals by Sergio Busquets -- in the 11th minute -- and Messi, at the 28-minute mark. Though still smarting from the sudden departure of Neymar, the Barça faithful could took heart from the energetic performance by Deulofeu, who was replaced by Denis Suarez at the start of the second half. Luis Suarez scored 10 minutes after the restart, and Denis Suarez bagged the fifth goal in the 74th minute.

CoA to discuss IPL 2017, domestic pay structure

New Delhi, Aug 8 (IANS): The next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and domestic cricket’s pay structure will come up for discussions when the Committee of Administrators (CoA) meets the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) here on Wednesday. In July, the BCCI had confirmed re-entry of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and inaugural champions Rajasthan Royals (RR) into the IPL after serving a two-year ban imposed on them for betting, while the future of Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions is yet to be confirmed. The proposal of a pay hike for domestic cricketers along with match officials and support staffs will also be an improtant issue that will be discussed. Apart from these matters, cricket’s possible inclusion into the Olympic programme for the 2024 Games will be another hot topic. The CoA will also take note of the Deloitte presentation related to the audit report that it has prepared. Another key issue that will be discussed is conflict of interest. The BCCI has objected on multiple clauses relating to this matter and the BCCI officials will be waiting to let known their disagreements to the COA.

Jadeja becomes No 1 Test allrounder Dubai, Aug 8 (PTI): India’s Ravindra Jadeja Tuesday edged out Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan to claim the top-rank among all-rounders apart from maintaining pole position in the bowlers’ chart in the latest ICC rankings. Jadeja currently has 438 points among the allrounders while Shakib has 431 points. Cheteshwar Pujara (888 points) gained a place to be third among batsmen while Virat Kohli (813 points) maintained his fifth position. Steve Smith and Joe Root are still Nos 1 and 2 in the list of batsmen. The significant gainer is Ajinkya Rahane (776 points), who has climbed five places to sixth in the list. Opener KL Rahul is at number 11 with 737 points. Incidentally, the match which put Jadeja on top of the heap is also the one where he breached ICC Code of Conduct to be handed a one-Test suspension. Jadeja also gained nine places to take 51st rank among batsmen while India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha has attained a career-best 44th position after moving up four places. In the bowlers’ list Ravichandran Ashwin (842 points) dropped a place to be third with Jimmy Anderson a notch below Jadeja. Pacers Mohammad Shami (20th) and Umesh

Yadav (22nd) have also made notable gains. England all-rounder Moeen Ali has finished the series against South Africa with a career-best rank of 21 among batsmen, 18th among bowlers and fourth in the table for all- rounders. His rise in the rankings was due to consistent performances as he became the first player to score 250 runs and take 25 wickets in a four-Test series.
