KAAC halts sand supply to Dimapur Correspondent

DIPHU, AUG 7: Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) has ordered suspension of river bed mining and halted all movement and transportation of sand carrying trucks to Dimapur with effect from August 6. In an official order, KAAC principal secretary said river bed mining during monsoon season has resulted in large scale erosion in the river banks and caused damage to the rural roads. When contacted, association president Kang Jang Terang told this correspondent “We have agreed with the decision of the authority”. He also opined that regular movement of trucks was not advisable during COVID-19 pandemic.

the country under the Vande Bharat Mission, meant to bring home stranded people from other countries amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Regular commercial flights have been halted in India because of the coronavirus outbreak. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who expressed his pain at the tragic accident, picked up the phone to speak to Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan. “My thoughts are with those

who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. Spoke to Kerala CM @vijayanpinarayi Ji regarding the situation. Authorities are at the spot, providing all assistance to the affected,” he said. Four hours after the crash, Kerala police officers said two people were still trapped and the operation to pull them out was still on. Officials said the runway- like the one in Mangalore- is on a hilltop with

gorges on either side that increases chances of casualties if the plane overshoots the runway. “It was raining heavily. The pilot had given a warning before landing saying the weather was really bad. He tried for safe landing twice but lost control. The aircraft shot off the runway and skidded off and it was broke into two pieces. It was a miraculous escape for many,” said a passenger V Ibrahim.

D I M A P U R , AU G 7 (NPN): Government of India (GoI) Representative and Interlocutor for Naga Peace Talks, R.N Ravi and NSCN (I-M) led by its general secretary, Th. Muivah are likely to hold a formal meeting during the third week of August in Delhi. Highly placed sources informed Nagaland Post that the negotiating parties were likely to hold the meeting after August 15 (Independence Day celebration). Meanwhile, the sources also informed that Governor of Nagaland and Interlocutor R.N. Ravi, could leave for Delhi on August 10, 2020. It was also learnt that a nine-member of NSCN (I-M) leaders had left for Delhi Friday (August 7, DIMAPUR, AUG 7 (NPN): 2020) by a chartered flight. The COVID-19 test report The members includedof a woman post-delivery Vikiye Sumi, Ruichumhao through RT-PCR was negative, stated a press note from Eden Medical Centre. Earlier, after delivery, the new born baby had also tested negative through TrueNat.

Raising, TT Among Sangtam, Limachuba, James Albert, Wungmatem Vashum, C.H. Kraibo, Meyong Phom and Zarshie Nyuthe. Another source informed that a five -member delegation had left for Delhi via Guwahati on Thursday. Earlier, the formal meeting between R.N. Ravi and NSCN (I-M) leaders, which was scheduled to be held in July 17, was postponed due to health issues of NSCN (I-M) ato kilonser and chief negotiator, Th. Muivah. Later, on July 20, Muivah flew to Delhi by a chartered flight for treatment, accompanied by his wife and others. Meanwhile, when asked about reports that R.N. Ravi was likely to be replaced by a new interlocutor, a senior official, on condition of anonymity, said that there was no such move to replace Ravi at this juncture.

D I M A P U R , AU G 7 (NPN): Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has appealed to Government of India (GoI) to make genuine efforts and show political will to resolve the world’s “oldest political issue”. NSF president Ninoto Awomi and vice president Dievi Yano further appealed to Centre’s interlocutor and governor RN Ravi to take the peace talks ahead with all seriousness, sincerity and empathy based on Nagas’ “unique history”. The signatories also expressed the hope that there would be a logical conclusion that would meet the aspirations of Naga youth for a permanent peace in all Naga-inhabited areas and thereby improving the quality of life. NSF also stressed that early accord should usher in good governance, accountability and sustainable development. The federation has also expressed its “displea-

sure over the continued division” among the Nagas even at this crucial juncture of peace talks. It however appreciated the milestone reached by government of India , NSCN (I-M) and NNPGs in showing extraordinary statesmanship, political acumen and patience to conclude the formal talks on October 31, 2019 for an inclusive solution covering all Naga-inhabited areas. NSF however cautioned that despite progress of talks, any short-sighted propaganda with no vision could lead to confusion and conflict in Naga areas. NSF also appealed to the Naga political groups to lay out clearly post-accord arrangement, governance model and ideology clearly agreed upon and accepted by government of India. Before inking the final agreement, NSF called for deliberation with transparency on what was best for the Naga society in the pres-

ent political context. NSF reminded that the Naga political struggle was a people’s movement, and so the sentiment of the entire Naga people in general was that they wanted to have a say. Hence the NSF called for disclosure of the agreed points and deliberate on points that are acceptable to the public and for closely reviewing issues obstructing the early signing of permanent peace in the region. NSF maintained that Nagas have suffered enough for standing up for their unique history and pursuing their common goal and that it stood committed to uphold the Naga identity till sovereignty and integration was achieved. NSF also reaffirmed that “artificial boundaries and circumstances created in the past” would not dissuade it from asserting the legitimate rights of Naga people for all times to come.

Mnp pol crisis: Cong, BJP issue separate whips

Corresspondent

IMPHAL, Aug 7: Both the opposition Congress and the ruling BJP in Manipur have issued whips to their respective legislators to ensure they attend the one-day state Assembly session on August 10. It is also not yet clear whether the coalition government will issue a common whip or not. The monsoon session of the state legislative Assembly which will have only a sitting will be held on August 10. The opposition Congress is moving a no-confidence motion against the N Biren Singh led BJP’s coalition. Chief whip of the C o n g r e s s l e g i s l a t o r s, Konthoujam Govindas issued a three-line whip to its legislators on Wednesday instructing them to be present in the House during discussion and voting on no confidence motion on August 10. “All the members are to attend the 11th session of the 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly convening from 11 am on 10th August till the end of the session and remain in the House during discussion and voting. “All the members are directed to vote in line with the decision made by the Congress Legislature Party led by Shri O Ibobi Singh,”

said the whip issued on the direction of the MPCC president. BJP legislator party’s chief whip and works minister Th Biswajit also issued whip to its legislators asking them to be present at the time of voting on no confidence motion. It instructed its legislators to be present in the House until the session is over and vote in favour of the government if there was any voting on the no confidence motions moved by Congress party. However, NPP and NPF, the two major partners of the BJP-led coalition government and other partners of the government were yet to issue a whip. NPP, NPF, LJP, Trinamool Congress and an independent legislator are the partners of the BJP in the coalition government. The NPP and NPF, having four legislators each have been supporting the BJP-led coalition government in the state while the LJP and Trinamool Congress have one legislator each. P Sharatchandra of BJP is the chief whip of the coalition government. resigned as members of the House. The Speaker had also disqualified the lone AITC legislator. However, an interim order of the High Court of Manipur stayed the Speaker’s order till August 20, 2020. The opposition Congress had already submitted at least three notices of moving no confidence motion against the N Biren-led coalition government to the state Assembly secretariat. While submitting the notices, the Congress alleged that even as the chief minister had given assurance to hand over drug kingpin Lhukhosei Zou’s case to CBI, the same was not translated into action. The sensitive case of drug kingpin Lhukhosei Zou, a former ADC Chandel chairman and an active member of the ruling BJP resurfaced when an MPS (Manipur Police Service) officer, in an affidavit submitted to the High Court of Manipur, alleged that the chief minister had pressured her to release Zou. Zou was arrested from his official quarter in Imphal along with seven others after 4.5 kg of heroin, 2,80,200 WY (world is yours) tablets, Rs 57,18,000 cash, Rs 95,000 in scrapped currency notes and several other incriminating articles were seized on June 19, 2018.

public life and rural politics since his childhood and his experience of the people - the problems they faced, the hardship they are undergoing through - and his mingling with the rural populace while practising law and after becoming a politician have inspired him to write books. Though the outbreak of novel coronavirus has greatly impacted the world, it has a positive side too according to Pillai. He said the virus has taught humanity how dependent we are on each other and it increases the love and affection among human beings. Te n o f h i s p o ems, including “Corona Kavithakal” in Malayalam, are related to Covid-19. “Corona Kavithakal” deals with philosophical questions in pandemic times and his another poem Vayojanam (Elderly) centres around the theme of human helplessness and how humanity helps people in tackling the pandemic.

The poem Mahamari (Pandemic) asserts the power of human will to take on adversities. Pillai said the coronavirus is the greatest challenge before human beings. “Humanity has conquered outbreaks of many diseases like plague in the past and the country (India) is now free of polio and smallpox. We will overcome the current crisis too with love, affection and humanity someday. These are the themes of my poems,” he said. The poem “Wuhan” talks about how the ancient city and former capital of China was suppressed due to Covid and how human beings can play a vital role to rebuild the glory of the city. “Oh, Mizoram, is a collection of poems in English, in which he talks about the scenic beauty and richness of the hilly northeastern state. Some of the books will be released by Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga at a function on Saturday. Pillai took to writing more than three decades ago. His first book was published in 1983. Before he became the governor he had published 105 books. So far, he has written at least 121 books of different categories, including poetry. He is now writing four books and 90 per cent of them have already been completed.

Assam CM asks DGP to probe Sonitpur clashes G U WA H AT I , AU G 7 (IANS): Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has asked the state’s Director General of Police to inquire into the incident of clashes between supporters of different groups in northern Assam’s Sonitpur district, officials said. Economy on tailspin

E

ven before coronavirus, India’s economy was slowing down with GDP growth at 4.2% despite the government’s hoopla that the economy will bounce back with a bang to propel India towards achieving a $ 5 trillion economy or Rs. 37,51,93,25,00,00,000 economy. Right now, Modi could miss that target, just like his promise to create 10 million jobs a year during his first term. India had a fiscal deficit 4.6% higher than the one it inherited six years ago. The sequence of quarterly GDP growth numbers leading up to that point tells a clear story: 7% growth shrunk to 6.2%, then to 5.6%, 5.7%, 4.4% and finally 3.1% in the quarter that ended with the lockdown. While everyone now has accepted the inevitable, that the GDP will contract in the current financial year (2020- 2021), the estimates vary. The World Bank pegs it at 3.2 per cent while Crisil puts it at 5 per cent. However, the government controlled RBI survey paints the rosiest picture saying that the economy will contract by only 1.5 per cent. Investment shrank by almost 3% over the year. The investment crisis and India’s large debt pile have the same cause: a government that thinks its own spending is what will fuel economic growth. According to official statistics, government spending increased by 12% last year, more than twice the growth rate of private consumption. The spending this period is not about revenue but a one-way street for COVID-19. The Indian economy was already in a bad shape, reeling under the long-term effects of Demonetisation and a hasty implementation of an ill-conceived GST plan. COVID-19 came as the proverbial Black Swan to hammer the nails into India’s economic engine. The government’s GST collections in April 2020 has been found to be 15 per cent of what it was in the same month last year. With low demand and output, corporate tax will fall. With loss of jobs and pay cuts, so will Income Tax. In such a situation, monetisation will remain the only way. India is no longer staring at a recession but a ‘depression’ and this could even push the government in finding it difficult to pay salaries. According to economists, The Indian economy is in a tailspin and India may actually be looking at something worse than a recession. India has never faced a sustained long-term downturn in economic activity in its 73 years of existence as an independent country. But there is now every possibility that India is looking at a ‘depression’ for the first time in its history, a possibility flagged by several economists. The size of the Indian economy could slump from Rs.200 lakh Crore to Rs. 130 lakh Crore. Economists who are independent of government influences have said that as things stand, and the government retains the 2020-21 expenditure budget for 2021-22 as well, it is likely that 2021-22 will witness a negative GDP growth rate of -8.8%. There is no option for the government but to take heed to the advocates of wage-led growth and do what is needed in this critical period. Statistics of the economy do reveal the truth that alibis cannot work for ever and certainly not with economists and analysts who understand the lies behind the jingoism.

DailyDevotion Prayer in the Father’s House

…they found Him in the temple…. And He said to them, “…Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” —Luke 2:46, 49 Our Lord’s childhood was not immaturity waiting to grow into manhood— His childhood is an eternal fact. Am I a holy, innocent child of God as a result of my identification with my Lord and Savior? Do I look at my life as being in my Father’s house? Is the Son of God living in His Father’s house within me? The only abiding reality is God Himself, and His order comes to me moment by moment. Am I continually in touch with the reality of God, or do I pray only when things have gone wrong— when there is some disturbance in my life? I must learn to identify myself closely with my Lord in ways of holy fellowship and oneness that some of us have not yet even begun to learn. “…I must be about My Father’s business”— and I must learn to live every moment of my life in my Father’s house. Think about your own circumstances. Are you so closely identified with the Lord’s life that you are simply a child of God, continually talking to Him and realizing that everything comes from His hands? Is the eternal Child in you living in His Father’s house? Is the grace of His ministering life being worked out through you in your home, your business, and in your circle of friends? Have you been wondering why you are going through certain circumstances? In fact, it is not that youhave to go through them. It is because of your relationship with the Son of God who comes, through the providential will of His Father, into your life. You must allow Him to have His way with you, staying in perfect oneness with Him. The life of your Lord is to become your vital, simple life, and the way He worked and lived among people while here on earth must be the way He works and lives in you.

Post-mortem

Bank ATM services require authorities urgent attention T he ATM (Automatic Teller Machine) services of the banks in Dimapur, Nagaland have reached an all-time low as their purpose to the society has not been provided. It is more than ever that we need the banks to initiate an impeccable job in providing their much needed facility and make life easier for the common people. With ATM’s running dry for the past few months, cash crunch is bothering many districts across Nagaland, with public facing a lot of inconvenience. It is noticed by every citizen that most of the ATM’s are not in a functioning condition and this problem has been going on for a very long time, even before the Covid-19 lockdown and it has been ignored by authorities to rectify this matter. This issue cannot be directed to any bank in particular but concerns both private and public sector banks. Three out of five ATM’s are found to be out of order or not in a functioning condition, downing its shutter while indicating no cash in hand. It is understood that the ATM maintenance and reloading of cash for

A

look around for functioning ATM’s and on finding one, faces another problem to wait in queue for a long time in this scorching heat as there are more people from different locations all jumbled up in that one particular standalone ATM that’s providing refuge to more than fifty people in an hour or two. A labour who has just received his payment has the urgency to go to an ATM the next day in order to withdraw their cash as back home their family is depended on that income for daily supply of food and basic amenities, and at the same time he/she has pending bills to pay and also have their work to attend, and at such moment they are found wandering the city looking for that one particular ATM. I too have been a victim to this mishap and many a times wandered the city in search for that one God-sent ATM that’s actually in a functioning condition providing refuge to those many people who have so miserably been wandering the city in lookout for that particular gold-spot (functioning ATM) that’s going to solve

their many problems. A top RBI official had blamed the shortage of cash in ATM’s due to ‘overdraw of cash’; meaning people are withdrawing more money than they ought to (As per Morung Express dated 8th April 2020). But the problem which goes unnoticed is the fact that more than 80% of shops or businesses do not have online facilities or card payment options, leaving the common people with no choice but to rely on cash based transaction. Nagaland being one of the eastern most state of India, sharing an ‘international border’ is a very sensitive location for our nation India, and in it, the only district (Dimapur) that is equipped with both a rail line and air/flight services connecting this state to many other states at a convenient and speedy way, and the ‘business hub’ of Nagaland, should at least, be facilitated with an uninterrupted ATM services just like all other states across our country, not because of its ‘want’ but because of its ‘necessity ‘or should I rather say its ‘urgency’. Comparing to other states, they have ATM facilities that function round the

clock (24x7), but in our state 90% of our ATM down their shutter at night time for security reasons, given that our state is classified under the ‘disturbed area’ status. This in turn makes the ATM available to the people for only a little more than half a day, and even in that scenario, ATM’s are out of order or running out of cash, or mostly going through a ‘link failure’ problem. While I waited in that unceremonious queue, i noticed that a new ‘banking system’ was born to this problem. As people have said it for thousands of years, so it still must be said for the next thousand years, ‘necessity is the mother of all invention’. Due to lack of facilities and availability of functioning ATM’s, I noticed that the people standing in queue ended up ‘banking with each other’. A person in line to deposit money in ATM ended up making a sweet deal with another who had the luxury of online banking system, and in turn one ended up providing the other with cash while the other transferred the money to their respective accounts. A simple act of

transaction benefitted both this individual and saved their much precious time and in doing so they went their ways, while the rest of us stood there spellbound admiring this sudden transaction as though one might admire a shooting star and after a moment of silence, ended up in laughter with much appreciation and deep rooted impatience. In conclusion, the question that every common man raises is how long do we have to face these grievances? And if the covid-19 lockdown has made things harder even for the authorities, then can we be assured that this problem will be immediately addressed after this unfortunate lockdown? Either way, as always, we the common people across all districts of Nagaland have to wait, and wait, and wait a little more to find out what will be and in doing so deal with this inconveniences mentioned above, every day, and wake up to a new day, with a new problem, forgetting the previous, or rather, become immune to it. COVID-19 challenges on college students

cademic stress, depression and anxiety: College students are at increased risk of mental health problems during the COVID 19 pandemic. Given protective measures like, city lockdown, social distancing, closing Institutions will reduce interpersonal interactions with their friends/ peers and teachers. However, availability of digital technologies can virtually take advantage to keep in touch with teachers. Delaying help-seeking may exacerbate mental health problems therefore; support is needed from family, friends, and professionals. The academic pressure creates keep more stress on the student’s life and get depressed and become inadequate in their studies. A significant transition takes place where students experience many new ways of learning through online classes, alternate ways of thinking, learning new mechanism, a new environment, and a new academic challenge. The responds to COVID 19 problems and challenges vary on individual’s personality. Some students may tend to ignore or hide their symptoms because of social or academic pressures. In the midst of students attending online classes their teachers or parents, may not recognize the warning signs they might be facing. Stress, anxiety, and depression are linked to several risk factors; academic pressure stemming from factors, including exams and study load. As academic stress increases, students become more susceptible to symptoms of depression. In this situation a college student can take practical steps to lower his

transactions are usually handled by private agencies and due to lockdown only 30% workforce is permissible, but this does not highlight the issue as to why this grievance has been present in our district and many other even before this lockdown for many years. The various economic classes of society have undergone this problem to stand in queue for thirty minutes or more in order to dispense cash for their daily uses as the ATM centres, although having two or more ATM’s, cannot make sure that all of them are in working condition, especially during business hours of the day as many people face immense problem, having homes to run, families to look after, payments to make, depend on essential commodities for day to day needs through cash as most of the shops do not accept card or online payment, hence making us more dependent on the availability of cash transaction for almost every aspect of life. Instances such as a person waiting for their pension money to be withdrawn is faced with the dilemma to

or her stress. Whatever the challenges, the depression can be cured, broken life can be restored and academic pressures can be overcome. Psychological Problems Encountered by the Students during COVID 19: Warning signs that may signal distress in a student are: Emotional distress, anxiety, depression, anger, isolation, difficulty adjusting, unusually high stress level, suspected drug or alcohol abuse, disruptive behavior, peer conflict, fatigue or social withdrawal. Aggressive behavior to self or others, inability to care for self, indications of self-destructive thought, a significant change of behavior. Feeling inferior to others, not able to think properly, financial problems, irritable, angry, sad and depressed for minor reasons, feel useless and incompetent, and feel life is not worth living, disturbed sleep, lack of appetite. Severe or chronic depression usually requires professional help. Signs include: feelings of emptiness, hopelessness, helplessness or worthlessness, deep sadness, inability to experience joy, difficulty concentrating, problems with memory and decision making, fatigue, social withdrawal, problems sleeping and eating. All these problems affect students in their studies which need to be taken care of from various sources. Unproductive Coping Strategies • Withdrawing from other people and isolating form others is a common reaction to problem. It is a way of avoiding being hurt again by hiding from others what the student may feel is their own inadequacy. The

problem is that this leaves no support. • S u b s t a n c e a b u s e, whether alcohol or other drugs, is another coping strategy commonly used among college students especially among the boys, to escape from problems, temporarily alleviating stress by self-medicating. Unfortunately; when you come down or sober up, the problems are still there. • Acting aggressively towards other people, either verbally or physically, is another negative way which might attempt to deal with stressful situations and feelings. Hurting others only creates further problems, like guilt and isolation. • Suicidal thoughts, which may lead to suicide attempts is another destructive way to cope with personal crisis. If any person is thinking of suicide that means he or she may have experienced a loss of a relationship, self-esteem, or status, such as failing their classes. Suicidal thoughts and attempts are efforts to cope by permanently escaping a temporary problem. The danger in using ineffective coping strategies to deal with stress is that they can become habitual, even addictive or fatal. They can become a new problem, adding their weight to the balancing act. They never really help resolve the original problem. How to Help Reduce Stress and Anxiety? The challenges student faced make one feel exhausted, worthless, helpless, and hopeless. Such negative thoughts and feelings make some students give up. It is important to realize that these negative views are part of the depression and typically do not accu-

rately reflect the situation. However, these problems can be overcome by setting different goals in life and adopting a habit of practicing everyday with the help of God. Goals to Help Reduce Academic Pressures and Stress for Students: • Set realistic goals and assume a reasonable amount of responsibility. • Break large tasks into small ones, set some priorities, and do what you can as you can. • Try to be around other people and to confide in someone; it is usually better than being alone and secretive. • Participate in activities that may make you feel better. • Mild exercise, a ballgame, or participating in religious, social, or other activities. • Expect your mood to improve gradually, not immediately. Feeling better takes time. • Remember, positive thinking will replace the negative thinking and will disappear as your stress responds to action • Share your problems to a counsellor and let your family and friends help you, (Debbi, Virgenia). Students should be aware of negatives thoughts and find ways to cope with crisis in a positive way. Look for coping strategies when you face stress, “Explore and clarify your feelings, Identify and take control of your thoughts, Get support by communicating your thoughts and feelings about the problem to someone you trust.” Being a college student can be a difficult balancing act especially during the COVID 19 Pandemic. It is easy to get weighed down with the

pressures of academics, social life, and choosing a major and career. If personal problems are piled on top of these pressures, you can feel overwhelmed and lose your balance. Mental Healing: God our Physician: When we are caught in our anxiety, we fail to internalize that God is the creator and sustainer of universe. We rely on our own insufficient power to do the impossible; and we forget that with God all things are possible. Even in the darkest hour God assures us his presence and protection upon us. As King David said; “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; you rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4. Amidst all despair, doubt, frustration, and hopelessness, Jesus Christ offers to you another view of life; He says; “I came that they may have life, and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). Being moody and despondent on a temporary basis is a natural part of every personality. However, do not allow your deep and despondent moods to control your very being. As fog veils a beautiful meadow, so depression clouds life itself; existence becomes dreary and dark. It has been described as “darkness visible.” You may be tempted to blame yourself unduly for all the things that have gone wrong. You may want to punish yourself and others for the deep personal problems which you encounter. Look to God he is the source of all your needs. The song by Andrew Peterson touches us when we feel the silence of God. “It’s enough to drive

Oswald Chambers says; “When you cannot hear God, you will find that He has trusted you in the most intimate way possible… with absolute silence, not a silence of despair, but one of pleasure, because He saw that you could withstand an even bigger revelation.” The stillness of God is his way of strengthening us, for he has promised that nothing that comes against us will ever stop his purpose for our life. Cooking utensils buried in mud, asbestos and tin sheets strewn around were all there to be seen at the area, which was the habitation of around 80 odd workers at the picturesque

area near a tea plantation, about 30 kms from the tourist town of Munnar. Big boulders are also scattered around the site. Addressing a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram, the Chief Minister said 15 people died in the mishap. Teams of National Disaster Response Force personnel were on their way to Pettimudi for joining the rescue operations and the government has also sought an Indian Air Force helicopter to assist in the mission, he said. The Associated Press also reported that US agriculture authorities have asked residents who receive unsolicited packages of seeds from China in the mail to avoid opening them and contact the state.

CBSE on core objective of NEP

NEW DELHI, AUG 7 (PTI): The core objective of the new National Education Policy (NEP), which has given freedom for amalgamation of different concepts, will be translated into action through the National Curriculum Framework, CBSE director said on Friday. CBSE Director Biswajit Saha made the comments during an e-conclave on the new NEP organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “The core objective of the policy will be translated into action through the National Curriculum Framework (NCF), which needs more participatory approach. The policy has given freedom for amalgamation of different concepts and multidisciplinary approach. The NCF will give a roadmap for implementation of reforms laid down in the policy,” he said.

Prof Joshi appointed UPSC chairman NEW DELHI, AUG 7 (PTI): Educationist Pradeep Kumar Joshi was on Friday appointed the chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), which conducts the civil services examination to select the country’s bureaucrats and diplomats, officials said. Joshi is currently a member in the Commission. He was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Arvind Saxena, the outgoing chairman of the UPSC, according to an official statement. Joshi joined the Commission as its member on May 12, 2015. Prior to joining the Commission, he was the chairman of the Chhattisgarh Public Service Commission and the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission, the statement issued by the UPSC said.

for coordinating the rescue and rehabilitation operations in Pettimudi, Vijayan said. Condoling the death of workers in the tragedy, the Chief Minister announced initial solatium of Rs 5 lakh each for the kinof the dead. Treatment expenses for the injured will be borne by the government, he said. In view of the Pettimudi incident, the district collectors have been directed to ensure safety and security of the workers staying in dwelling units in the tea estates. The Prime Minister’s Office said in a tweet that an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) would be given to the next of kin of those killed in the landslide. Rs 50,000 each would be given to those injured. “Pained by the loss of lives due to a landslide in Rajamalai, Idukki. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families,” Modi tweeted. Praying for the early recovery of the injured, he said NDRF and the administration were working on the ground, providing assistance to the affected. Home Minister Shah in a tweet said an NDRF

system, with RSS imprintcentralisation, commercialisation & communalisation. “Forced by Parliament the earlier draft had to be withdrawn in 2017. It has been cosmetically rehashed and bulldozed under conditions of the pandemic & lockdown,” he said. He further said it was wrong of the PM to say that no one has complained of any bias in the new NEP. “This policy is biased against the Dalits/Tribals/Disabled & religious & linguistic minorities. This favours the rich & elite, deprives the poor & marginalised. It will continue to be opposed,” he said. CPI general secretary D Raja said the NEP has virtually made education inaccessible for the poor. “Everything that the PM has said is a mere rhetoric. These rheto-

NEW DELHI, AUG 7 (PTI): The Supreme Court Friday sought the Centre’s reply on a PIL seeking direction to set up an independent body to regulate and facilitate broadcasting services in the country. Besides the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, a bench of Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian also issued notices to the News Broadcasters Association, the News Broadcasting Standards Authority of India and the Press Council of India on the PIL filed by Delhi-based lawyer Reepak Kansal. The plea said that an independent body with the name of the Broadcast

ric cannot justify the NEP. They cannot deceive the people any more. The Modi government is implementing the agenda of the RSS and handing over of the entire education system to the private sector. It is complete privatisation, commercialisation, centralisation and communalisation of education. Even the Parliament has been bypassed to achieve this aim,” said Raja. On Friday, Modi said the NEP is not just a circular and its implementation will be like a “mahayagya” which will need strong determination and collective efforts from all stakeholders. Referring to the policy as the foundation of the “new India”, he said the NEP focusses on “how to think”, while the country’s education system so far emphasised on “what to think”.

OCI card holders can visit India: MHA

NEW DELHI, AUG 7 (PTI): Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card holders from the US, UK, German and France, with whom India has signed ‘air bubble’ arrangements, will be allowed to visit the country, the Home Ministry announced on Friday. Other foreigners from these countries have also been allowed to avail Indian visa facility for business, medical and employment purposes. According to a home ministry notification, Indian citizens have also been allowed to travel to these

countries on any type of visa. “Ministry of Home Affairs has permitted to enter India OCI card holders who belong to countries with which ‘air bubble’ arrangements have been finalised by Ministry of Civil Aviation,” a home ministry spokesperson said. India so far has bilateral air travel arrangements or ‘air bubbles’ with the US, UK, Germany and France during the coronavirus pandemic-related international travel restrictions. Other countries may be included under this scheme

in future, the notification said. The home ministry said it has further considered the need for relaxation of visa and travel restrictions for more categories of foreign nationals who want to travel to India and Indian nationals intending to visit other countries in the context of the ‘air bubble’ scheme. Accordingly, in respect of countries with which ‘air bubble’ scheme has already been worked out, i.e. the US, UK, Germany and France and the countries that may be included in such

Says he will prioritise dialogue with people and development

SRINAGAR, AUG 7 (PTI): The Jammu and Kashmir administration will soon initiate “direct dialogue” with the people to end the situation of uncertainty and the menace of terrorism, the union territory’s new lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha said on Friday soon after being sworn in. The 61-year-old, who was administered the oath of office by Jammu and Kashmir High Court Chief Justice Gita Mittal at a simple function in the Raj Bhavan, also said he wants to accelerate development in the union territory, carved out of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir last year. “August 5 is a very important day in the history of Jammu and Kashmir. After years of isolation, Jammu and Kashmir joined the national mainstream. I have been told that many works which could not be completed in years have been completed in the past one year,” Sinha told reporters after taking oath. “I want to accelerate that development,” he added. On August 5, 2019, Jammu and Kashmir’s special status under Article 370 was revoked and the state

Manoj Sinha being sworn in as LG on Friday. bifurcated into the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. Outlining his priorities, Sinha pitched for peace and stability and said the powers of the Constitution will be used for the betterment of the people and the development of Jammu and Kashmir. “We need to establish a dialogue with the common people of Jammu and Kashmir. We don’t have any agenda in that. There will be no discrimination against anyone. Constitution will be Gita in that,” he said. Sinha said the process of direct dialogue with the people will start in a few days. “There should be peace and stability in Jammu and Kashmir. The situation of

uncertainty should end, terrorism should end. Achieving all this along with accelerated development will be our aim, our mission,” the lieutenant governor said. Less than 150 people were invited for the swearingin ceremony. Social distancing norms were observed with all invitees seated away from each other and everyone wearing masks in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sinha and the chief justice briefly took off their masks for the oath-taking. Sinha succeeds former IAS officer Girish Chandra Murmu, who resigned on Wednesday night and was appointed Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) on Thursday.

Modi govt pushing RSS agenda through NEP: Left parties claim

NEW DELHI, AUG 7 (PTI): The CPI(M) and the CPI on Friday accused the government of “pushing the RSS agenda” into the academia through the new National Education Policy (NEP) and alleged it would lead to commercialisation, centralisation and communalisation of education. Reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertion Friday that he was happy that no section of the country has opposed the NEP or called it biased, CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury in a series of tweets claimed it was being “opposed” by a large section of society. “Illusions of grandeur? Many state governments, academia, students & intelligentsia opposed & continue to oppose this fundamental shift in India’s education

team has reached Iddukki to assist in the rescue and relief operations. Rahul Gandhi, who represents Wayanad in Lok Sabha, in a message said “This is a terrible tragedy. I urge all our Congress party workers and leaders to lend a helping hand at this time and do whatever they can to mitigate the suffering of our brothers and sisters who are in need of help.” The death toll in rainrelated incidents since June 1 this year has risen to 51. One person died in a house collapse in Palakkad on Friday, officials said. Idukki District Collector H Dinesh told PTI that “Most of the people (affected in the landslide) are plantation workers and from neighbouring Tamil Nadu”. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has sounded a red alert for Idukki on Friday, indicating extremely heavy rains of over 20 cms. In the last 24 hours ended at 8.30 am, Peermade in the district recorded the maximum of 26.1 cm, it said. Several other districts also received rains in excess of 10 cms.

a scheme in future, it has been decided that OCI card holders holding passports of such countries are permitted to enter India, the notification said. Indian missions of these countries will grant appropriate visa, provided papers of the applicants are in order and there is no adverse input about them. Any Indian national holding any type of valid visa of such countries may be permitted to travel to the country concerned provided there is no travel restriction for entry of Indian nationals in that country.

Regulatory Authority of India be set up to check “sensational reporting” and discourse by TV news channels on critical issues. “The petitioner seeks indulgence of this court to protect and safeguard right of life with dignity as guaranteed under the Constitution and which have been assassinated by uncontrolled and unregulated broadcasting electronic channels claimed to be ‘Press’,” the PIL said and referred to some news channels’ reporting in support of the claim. The freedom of speech and expression under Ar-

ticle 19 (1) of the Constitution doesn’t permit anyone to assail the dignity of individuals and political and religious organisation, it said. Referring to reasonable restrictions on freedom of speech and expression as mentioned in clause (2) of Article 19, it said that they prevent “any person from making any statement that injures the reputation of another”. The Constitution also prohibits a person from making statements that incite people to commit offense. Under Indian law, the freedom of speech is

not an absolute right to express one’s thoughts freely, not even the Press, the plea said. The Constitution enables the legislature to impose certain restrictions on free speech if it adversely affects “security of the state, friendly relations with foreign States, public order, decency and morality, contempt of court, defamation, incitement to an offence and sovereignty and integrity of India”, the plea said.

“The airwaves are public property and it is necessary to regulate the use of such airwaves in national and public interest, particularly with a view to ensuring proper dissemination of content and in the widest possible manner,” it said. Some of these said electronic broadcasting channels claimed to be news channels, have been spreading negativity and enmity among the different communities of the nation, it said.

IDUKKI (KERALA), AUG 7 (PTI): At least 15 people were killed and around 50 others feared trapped in debris after a landslide triggered by heavy rains flattened a row of dwelling units of tea estate workers at Pettimudi in Rajamala in this high-range district in Kerala early Friday, police and officials said. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said 15 people who got trapped in the debris were rescued and a special officer has been appointed to coordinate the relief operations. The incident is said to have occurred in the wee hours when a huge mound of earth fell on the “row houses” and two children and five women were among the deceased, most of whom were plantation workers from neighbouring Tamil Nadu. Efforts were underway amid continuing rains to locate the missing people in the first major rain-related mishap since the onset of South West monsoon last month that brought back memories of devastation caused by floods and landslides in the previous two years in the state. High-level of operational alertness along the LAC

NEW DELHI, AUG 7 (PTI): The Indian Army and the IAF will maintain a very high-level of operational readiness in all areas along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh, North Sikkim, Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh till a “satisfactory” resolution to the border row with China is arrived at, people familiar with the developments said on Friday. Chief of Army Staff Gen MM Naravane has already conveyed to all the senior commanders of the Army overseeing the operation of the frontline formations along the LAC to keep up a significantly high state of alertness and maintain the aggressive posturing to deal with any Chinese “misadventure”, they said. In the last three weeks, the Chief of Army Staff held long and elaborate discussions with all the senior

commanders responsible for overseeing the Army’s operational readiness and deployment along the nearly 3,500 KM-long LAC, the de-facto border between India and China. The fresh directive to maintain a very high-level of alertness came in the wake of lack of forward movement in implementation of the disengagement process by China’s People’s Liberation Army(PLA) in several friction points in eastern Ladakh including Pangong Tso, Depsang and Gogra. India has already conveyed to China that there is no option but to restore status quo ante in all areas of eastern Ladakh to end the row, the people familiar with the developments said. While Gen Naravane visited eastern Ladakh in mid-July with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, on Thursday he held wide-ranging delibera-

tions with senior commanders of the eastern command in Tezpur-based 4 Corps headquarters. The Indian Air Force(IAF) is also preparing to maintain a relatively very high state of alertness in eastern Ladakh and other sensitive areas. Vice Chief of IAF Air Marshal H S Arora visited a number of air bases in Ladakh on Friday to take stock of the operational preparedness of the force. Following the Galwan Valley clashes, the IAF deployed almost all its frontline fighter jets like Sukhoi 30 MKI, Jaguar and Mirage 2000 aircraft in the key frontier air bases in eastern Ladakh and elsewhere along the LAC. The IAF has been carrying out night time combat air patrols over the eastern Ladakh region in an apparent message to China that it was ready to deal with any eventualities in the mountainous region.

Groundwater for commercial use criminal offence: NGT NEW DELHI, AUG 7 (PTI): There is no absolute right to extract groundwater for commercial purpose and doing so without authorisation is a criminal offence, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) said on Friday. The green panel said that it is the duty of the state pollution control boards to stop commercial extraction of groundwater by coercive means and recover compensation from violators. The NGT observation came while hearing a plea filed by Haryana-resident Raj Kumar Singal alleging illegal extraction of groundwater and discharge of polluted water into drain by an industrial unit in Panipat. “Ground water extraction has to be regulated having regard to safety of level of groundwater so that water bodies and e-flow of rivers are not affected,” a bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice A K Goel said. “Impact of such extraction on the environment is

to be studied. There is no absolute right to extract groundwater for commercial purpose,” the NGT said. The tribunal said that if anyone is found extracting groundwater, it is per se a criminal offence under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. It noted that the industrial unit in Panipat has been found to be extracting groundwater in the area and directed the Haryana State Pollution Control Board to take action against it. “No doubt, the Ground Water Authority is an express authority for the purpose, at the same time, if the Ground Water Authority has not taken such remedial action, the State PCB is not debarred from exercising such jurisdiction,” the bench said. It directed the Haryana State PCB to take appropriate action to asses and recover compensation following due process of law. Illegal extraction of ground water may be stopped forthwith, the tribunal said.

India’s COVID-19 management marked by rising recovery, falling fatality rates

NEW DELHI, AUG 7 (PTI): India’s COVID-19 management is marked by “two significant achievements” of continuously rising recovery rate among coronavirus patients and a case fatality rate that has remained much below the global average, the Union health ministry said on Friday. While the recovery rate among coronavirus patients has risen to a record high of 67.98 per cent, the fatality rate has gone down to 2.05 per cent, it said. “These two in tandem have enabled a higher and rising difference of more than 7.7 lakh between the number of recovered patients and active cases in India,” the ministry said. With 49,769 patients recuperating from the disease in 24 hours, the number of recoveries have jumped to 13,78,105 on Friday. The recovery rate has

increased from 51.08 per cent on June 15 to 67.98 per cent on August 7, while active cases, which comprised 46.06 per cent of the total COVID-19 caseload on June 15 now account for 29.96 per cent, it said. “Ramped up hospital infrastructure and emphasis on efficient treatment of hospitalised patients through the standard of care incorporated in the Clinical Treatment Protocol issued by the Centre, have effectively ensured improvement in the recovery rate,” the ministry said. It said the average daily recovered cases (seven day moving average) have increased from around 26,000 cases to 44,000 cases in the last two weeks. Sustained efforts by the Centre, states and union territories through focused and coordinated containment, widespread testing combined with supervised isolation and

effective treatment have ensured the decline in percentage of active cases and rise of the percentage of recoveries, the health ministry said. In a testament to the consistent and coordinated efforts of the Centre and the state and UT governments, India continues its track record of testing more than 6 lakh COVID19 samples each day for the fourth successive day, it said. Expanded diagnostic lab network and facilitation for easy testing across the country have given a boost, and with 6,39,042 tests conducted on Thursday, India has done 2,27,88,393 tests so far. With India’s cumulative testing rising from 1.2 crore on July 14 to 2.2 crore as on date, the COVID-19 positivity rate has seen an increase from 7.5 to 8.87 per cent during the same period, the Union health ministry said on Friday.

Rajapaksa brothers win by Beirut explosions: 16 port employees arrested landslide in Sri Lanka’s election

Beirut, Aug 7 (IANS/ ap): Sixteen employees at the Port of Beirut have been arrested over the two deadly explosions in the Lebanese capital that claimed the lives of over 135 people and left thousands others injured, a top official announced. On Thursday evening, Government Commissioner to the Military Tribunal Judge Fadi Akiki said that more than 18 people have been questioned so far, including port and customs officials as well as people in charge of maintenance at the hangar where explosive materials have been stored for years, Xinhua news agency reported. Meanwhile, Beirut’s First Investigative Judge Ghassan Oueidat issued a decision prohibiting the travel of seven port officials. Two huge explosions rocked the Port of Beirut on Tuesday evening, killing at least 137 people and injuring nearly 5,000 others, while causing massive damages in the city. Primary information has revealed that ammonium nitrate stored since 2014 in the port’s warehouse No. 12 might have caused the explosions. Also on Thursday, it was announced that Lebanon’s Port of Tripoli was

ready to temporarily replace the Port of Beirut. Ahmed Tamer, director of the Tripoli port, told Xinhua that it has completed all its preparations to receive the aid ships sent to Lebanon and the vessels that transport products and goods. Meanwhile, Lebanon continued to receive foreign donations and support following the disaster. Italy and Russia sent two aircraft with medical equipment while Jordan sent a medical team with a field hospital. A medical team also

arrived earlier in the day from Tunisia along with food products. A Polish Airlines aircraft arrived carrying rescue teams to help the Lebanese Red Cross and Civil Defense teams in removing victims through the rubble. The team brought trained dogs to help in rescuing missing people at Port of Beirut and in other areas. Meanwhile, Turkey sent an aircraft carrying medicines, medical equipment and advanced machines that can be used in rescuing missing people

through the rubble. The Kuwaiti embassy in Lebanon handed over humanitarian assistance including medical equipment and food while it had sent a day earlier 35 tonnes of medicines and food products. Germany has also sent a number of doctors and a team specialized in helping Lebanese Civil Defense teams in their rescue efforts. Moreover, Egypt sent medical equipment while Iran sent a field hospital in addition to necessary medical materials.

The UN human rights office is calling for an independent investigation into the Beirut explosion, insisting that “victims’ calls for accountability must be heard”. Spokesman Rupert Colville of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights cited the need for the international community to “step up” to help Lebanon with both a quick response and sustained engagement. He said Lebanon is facing the “triple tragedy of a socio-economic crisis, COVID-19 and the ammonium nitrate explosion” that devastated the capital on Tuesday. Colville also called for the poor and most vulnerable to be respected as Beirut and Lebanon rebuild, and urged Lebanese leaders to “overcome political stalemates and address the grievances of the population”. That was an allusion to large protests that broke out in Lebanon in October.

C OLO M B O, AUG 7 (AGENCIES): Sri Lanka's powerful Rajapaksa brothers have secured a landslide victory in the country's parliamentary election, according to final results, reports Al- Jazeera. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa's Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP) won 145 seats and can also count on the support of at least five allies in the 225-member legislature, according to the results released on Friday. The SLPP's main opponent obtained just 54 seats in Wednesday's vote, which saw more than 75 percent of the 16.2 million eligible voters cast their ballots. The prime minister is most likely to be sworn in the same position by his younger brother, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, and the huge win on Friday could enable them to change the constitution and strengthen the dynastic rule. "Sri Lanka People's Front has secured a resounding victory according to official results released so far," Gotabaya Rajapaksa said in a Twitter message. "It is by belief that that the expectation to have a Parliament that will enable the implementation of my 'vision for prosperity' policy will be

Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

reality tomorrow." Critics fear the siblings renowned for their crushing of Tamil separatist rebels to end a decades-old conflict in 2009 - want to end presidential term limits, bring the judiciary and police under their direct control, and extend their dynastic power to a new generation. Sri Lanka's opposition has accused the government of corruption, censorship and intimidation. Al Jazeera's Minelle Fernandez, reporting from the capital, Colombo, said despite criticism of "authoritarianism and dominance" people have opted for the governing party. "Mahinda Rajapaksa was voted out of office essentially just one term ago. The previous government came to power on the promise of change but it failed

miserably. They did carry forward some constitutional reforms but ultimately, they were such a big disappointment that people of this country have gone back to the Rajapaksas. "The handling of coronavirus crisis by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has invoked a lot of confidence in the people in contrast with the shambles the last government made following the Easter bombing attack last year." The Indian Ocean Island has largely contained the spread of the novel coronavirus with 2,839 confirmed cases, including 11 deaths. However, analysts say any attempt by Gotabaya Rajapaksa to push for changes that will strengthen presidential power at the expense of those of the prime minister may trigger sibling rivalry.

Chinese national mentions PLA Galwan Thai protesters threaten escalation as police make arrests deaths; arrested as ‘rumour-monger’

Dongfeng Off-road military vehicle.

New Delhi, Aug 7 (AGENCIES): A report in China Military website said recently, “A netizen surnamed Zhou was arrested by the police in accordance with the law.” He was charged with spreading rumours online by saying that “the poor quality of military vehicles supplied by the Dongfeng Off-road Company has caused the death (sic) of Chinese soldiers during the China-India border clash”. China has so far not admitted to casualties in the Galwan Valley clash in which the Indian Army

acknowledged 20 casualties, including the battalion Commanding Officer (CO). Asked recently during a webinar to comment on reports of the US intelligence putting Chinese PLA casualties at 34, including the CO, Chinese Ambassador to India Sun Weidong sidestepped the question by stating that it would not be helpful to improving the situation. The Chinese Military website said Dongfeng Company approached the local police as well as set up a special working group to investigate and verify the case after it learnt that

an online-user Zhou had posted rumours had claimed on his “WeChat Moments” that internal corruption in the company led to the poor quality of its military vehicles, which resulted in the casualties of Chinese soldiers on the China-India border. The website China Military is sponsored by the China PLA. Zhou was arrested by local police on August 4 and “confessed to his crime” and wrote a sincere apology letter”. It is not clear what linkage Zhou sought to establish between the deaths in a remote place and alleged faults in Dongfeng vehicles as the report provided no further details. The report was commented on social media by strategic analyst Brahma Chellaney. The punishment of writing an apology letter if unaccompanied by a jail term would suggest that Zhou may only have been venting his ire against the company.

Ban g ko k , Au g 7 (AP): Political tensions are rising in Thailand as pro-democracy activists vowed Friday to step up protests against the government and police arrested some key figures in recent demonstrations. Protest leaders warned that they will expand their activities if the government fails to meet their demands, which include dissolving Parliament, holding new elections and changing the constitution. Recent pro-democracy demonstrations, mostly led by students, have been modest in size but have spread widely and quickly, unnerving the government. Army commander Gen. Apirat Kongsompong — a political strongman in a country where coups have toppled many governments — indirectly but harshly criticized the protesters this week. “COVID-19 can be cured ... but the disease that cannot be cured is the hatred of the nation,” he

said in a speech to military academy cadets. The gover nment cracked down on Friday with the arrests of some high-profile members of the pro-democracy movement. Among them was human rights lawyer Arnon Nampha, who was arrested on charges of sedition and defying an emergency decree imposed to control the coronavirus. Critics charge the decree is being wielded against political

dissidents. Arnon drew the ire of the authorities for remarks he made about the monarchy at a rally on Monday. He was reported to have spoken about laws that were passed to increase the power of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, who took the throne in 2016. A second man, Panupong Jadnok, was also arrested on protest-related charges, and more arrests were expected. The monarchy is a

sensitive topic in Thailand, and public criticism of it has long been taboo and illegal. But the continuing domination of Thai politics by the military and a royalist elite has sparked fr ustration, especially among younger Thais. On social media and at demonstrations, there has been limited but unprecedented criticism of the monarchy, which is subject to prosecution under a lese majeste law that carries a punishment of up

to 15 years in prison. T h e a r my s t a ge d coups in 2006 and 2014 that ousted elected governments, and the military regime that held power in 2014 until last year passed laws ensuring it would retain influence after the 2019 general election. A political party considered a proxy for the army managed to assemble a coalition government led by the former army commander who staged the 2014 coup, Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha. Fr i d ay ’s a r r e s t s seemed unlikely to discourage the protest movement. Just hours earlier, eight leaders of the Free People movement -– formerly known as Free Youth -– announced plans for a mass rally on Aug. 16. One of the leaders questioned whether the prime minister’s statement this past week that he would form a committee and consider their views was simply a tactic.

Trump signs orders banning Chinese apps TikTok & Wechat Swiss ink deal with Moderna for

Tr ump noted that these risks have led other countries, including Australia and India, to begin restricting or banning the use of TikTok and WeChat. TikTok which has up to 80 million active monthly users in America - has exploded in popularity in recent years, mostly with people under 20. TikTok, a video-sharing mobile application owned by the Chinese company ByteDance Ltd, automatically captures vast swaths of information from its users, Trump said. This data collection threatens to allow the ruling Chinese Communist Party access to Americans’ personal and proprietary

information - potentially allowing China to track the locations of federal employees and contractors, build dossiers of personal information for blackmail, and conduct corporate espionage, he alleged. TikTok also reportedly censors content that the Chinese Communist Party deems politically sensitive, such as content concerning protests in Hong Kong and China’s treatment of Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities. TikTok may also be used for disinformation campaigns that benefit the Chinese Communist Party, the president said. “To deal with this threat, the order prohibits, beginning 45 days after the

date of this order, to the extent permitted under applicable law, any transaction by any person, or with respect to any property, subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, with ByteDance Ltd., Beijing, China, or its subsidiaries, in which any such company has any interest, as identified by the Secretary of Commerce (Secretary),” Trump said. He delegated power to the commerce secretary to take such actions, including adopting appropriate rules and regulations, and to employ all powers granted to the President by International Emergency Economic Powers Act as may be necessary to implement the order. The order also directs all department and agencies to take all appropriate measures within their authority to implement the order, Trump said. In separate executive order, Trump said WeChat, a messaging, social media, and electronic payment application owned by the Chinese company Tencent Holdings Ltd., reportedly has over one billion users worldwide, including users in the United States. “Like TikTok, WeChat

automatically captures vast swaths of information from its users - threatens to allow the Chinese Communist Party access to Americans’ personal and proprietary information,” he said. WeChat also captures the personal and proprietary information of Chinese nationals visiting the United States, thereby allowing the Chinese Communist Party a mechanism for keeping tabs on Chinese citizens who may be enjoying the benefits of a free society for the first time in their lives, he alleged. “WeChat, like TikTok, also reportedly censors content that the Chinese Communist Party deems politically sensitive and may also be used for disinformation campaigns that benefit the Chinese Communist Party,” Trump said. In recent weeks, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has accused TikTok of collecting personal information of Americans. TikTok has previously stressed that its US user data is already stored on USbased servers and backed up in Singapore, and is therefore not subject to Chinese law as some US officials have feared.

4.5M doses of COVID vaccine

Geneva, Aug 7 (AP): The Swiss federal government says it has struck a deal with Moderna to supply Switzerland with 4.5 million doses of a COVID-19 vaccine if the US biotech firm successfully develops one. The Federal Office of Public Health says the agreement aims “to guarantee Switzerland early access to the vaccine of Moderna” and is one of the first such deals by any government with the company. “The federal government wants to ensure that the Swiss population has rapid access to a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine,” an office statement said on Thursday. “At the same time, Switzerland is supporting multilateral projects for the fair distribution of a future vaccine.” The Moder na deal would make it possible to vaccinate 2.25 million people, because expectations are that two doses would be needed, it said. That would be enough for more than a fourth of the wealthy Alpine country’s population of about 8.2 million. The Swiss government is also in talks with other

vaccine companies and has already allocated 300 million Swiss francs (nearly $330 million) for purchases of COVID-19 vaccine. It did not specify the value of the Moderna deal. Early trials found the experimental Moderna vaccine, developed with the US National Institutes of Health, revved up

people’s immune systems. A larger study that’s expected to involve 30,000 people began last month and hopes to show the vaccine is strong enough to protect against the coronavirus. The agreement comes amid a thorny debate about who should get a safe and effective COVID19 vaccine first.

Washington, Aug 7 (PTI): US President Donald Trump has signed executive orders banning TikTok and WeChat, terming the popular Chinese apps a threat to the country’s national security and economy. The ban comes into effect in 45 days, Trump said in two separate executive orders signed on Thursday. India was the first country to ban TikTok and WeChat, citing national security concerns. India has banned as many as 106 Chinese apps, a move welcomed by both the Trump administration and US lawmakers. “The United States must take aggressive action against the owners of TikTok to protect our national security,” Trump said in his executive order. In his next executive order he said the country must take “aggressive action” against WeChat to protect America’s national security. In a communique to the Congress, Trump said the spread in the United States of mobile applications developed and owned by companies in China continues to threaten the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the country.

UEFA Europa League: Sevilla overpower Roma 2-0

Sevilla’s Sergio Reguilon (C) celebrates with teammates scoring during the UEFA Europa League round of 16 football match between Sevilla FC and AS Roma.

BERLIN, AUG 7 (IANS): Sevilla booked their spot in the quarterfinal after edging an uninspired Roma 2-0 on first-half goals from Sergio Reguilon and Youssef En-Nesyri in an all-or-nothing encounter in Europa League’s round of the last 16. The fixture was set as a single-legged clash after the first leg was cancelled back in March. Hence, UEFA decided to schedule the game on neutral soil in Duisburg, Germany on Thursday, reports Xinhua news agency. From the star ting whistle, Sevilla assumed control and pressed Roma into defence. As a result, goalkeeper Pau Lopez had his hands full as Lucas Ocampos headed on target in the seventh minute before

Jules Kounde rattled the crossbar following a corner six minutes later. Sevilla continued on the front foot and their efforts paid off in the 21st minute when Reguilon danced through Roma’s defence to slot home the opener from close range. Nine minutes later Jesus Navas wasted a good chance to double the advantage as he wasn’t able to keep the ball after trying to round goalkeeper Pau Lopez. As the match progressed, Roma gained a foothold into the game only to see Sevilla extending their lead just before the break after Ocampos initiated a fast break for En-Nesyri, who tapped home from close range to make it 2-0.

Roma increased the pressure after the break but it was the Spaniards who caused more trouble. The Italians lacked ideas and focussed on longrange efforts but neither Edin Dzeko nor Henrikh Mkhitaryan was able to score from distance. Sevilla thought they had extended their lead but Kounde’s goal was ruled offside while Ever Banega came close after hitting the crossbar in the dying minutes of the game. Roma rounded off their Europa League exit with a straight red card as Gianluca Mancini received his marching orders for violent conduct. Sevilla will either face Olympiacos or Wolverhampton in the Duisburg Arena next Tuesday.

Kim Clijsters, Andy Murray get wild cards for 2020 US Open WASHINGTON, AUG 7 (IANS): Former US Open champions and world No. 1 players Kim Clijsters and Andy Murray have received wild cards for the 2020 US Open, which is slated to begin from August 31. Belgium’s Clijsters will be looking to repeat her magic from the 2009 US Open, when she famously won the singles title as a wild card after returning from an initial retirement, during which she became a mother. She would later become the first mother in WTA history to hold the world No. 1 ranking. The three-time US Open champion (2005, 2009-10), who came out of a more than seven-year retirement earlier in 2020, will be

playing the US Open for the first time since she stepped away from the game following the 2012 tournament. She is currently unranked. Murray, ranked No. 129, narrowly missed the direct-entry cutoff, but is set to compete in his first US Open since 2018. The 33-year-old Briton won the first of his three Grand Slam titles at the 2012 US Open. The two New York tournaments will be Murray’s first competitive action of 2020 as he continues to work his way back from hip surgeries in 2018-19. Murrray missed the US Open in 2017 and 2019 through injury, and seriously considered retiring from the game after the 2019 Australian Open.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur SATURDAY, AUGUST 8, 2020

IPL title sponsorship: Eyes on Amazon & Unacademy, Jio the dark horse New Delhi, Aug 7 (IANS): The suspension of Vivo’s title sponsorship with the Indian Premier League (IPL) has opened up the market for a new brand to come in for the 2021 edition of the cashrich league. But market experts believe it will be a case of one from either e-commerce or e-learning companies coming in with the telecom sector playing the role of the dark horse. Speaking to IANS, a market analyst said that it is just the push a brand like Amazon could need going into the Diwali weekend. Also, the deal would cost them much less than what a Vivo had to shell out Rs 440 cr. In fact, it is likely to be a win-win situation whoever jumps in and grabs the opportunity. “See, at present after whatever has happened with the lockdown and economic impact, two of the biggest players would be from the e-learning and e-commerce sector. You don’t expect a new player, like some start-up, to walk in. But, maybe someone like a Byju’s, which is already a part of the BCCI family, can step up and do the big ticket event. Not to forget Unacademy who have been looking to associate itself with the cricket fraternity. “When you come to the e-commerce side of things, while Diwali is four days after the final, you don’t shop two days before the occasion. You actually do it a month leading into the festival. What better than for Amazon or Flipkart to use that space and get ultimate mileage? Also, you have to realise that

nobody will be paying 440 cr. So, in short, you get the best advertising seat for say half or 1/3rd the value. It cannot get better than this actually,” the analyst said. Ad film maker Prahlad Kakkar believes that one cannot rule out the pharma sector because some of the pharmaceutical companies have done really well during the coronavirus pandemic. But he also feels that if ready, Amazon could be the frontrunner. “I don’t know if Amazon will look to come in as they are pretty cautious in their approach. But if they do, they could take it away. E-learning brands yes. But also, you have to keep in mind the pharma companies because they have done really well in this market. So, why not? What you must remember is that the IPL will take the cake this

season because people will be glued to the television. I think it could be a win-win situation whoever decides to take up the offer,” Kakkar told IANS. Another market expert said that it would be very surprising if Jio does come in and that could be more to do with the good terms the owners share with the BCCI. “See, Jio is already a brand that is individually associated with the eight teams. Why would it further want to get into the title sponsorship game? If they do, that would be more to do with the relationship they share with the BCCI. Also, as per statistics, they have been one of the most prominent brands in the IPL window ever since they associated themselves with the eight teams.
