The torrential rains have also triggered landslides in several areas under Mon district. In Tizit, heavy rains caused the nearby river to rise alarmingly and flood various places besides cutting of the only road link between Mon and Namtola. The worst affected areas include forest colony, Namsa and Lapa Lampong village. According to District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), about 80 metres of Mon-Namtola road, the lifeline of the district, was submerged under flood water making it impossible for vehicles to ply, particularly near forest colony, Tizit Town (Namsa). Konyak further tweeted “no matter what comes to Tizit let us embrace with courage and work together to make Tizit as the biggest hub in the state.”

NEW DELHI, AUG 7 (PTI): Home Minister Rajnath Singh Monday ordered that the ongoing border area development projects should be completed on priority in a time-bound manner. The directive has been issued at a high-level meeting, chaired by Singh, convened to review border area development projects. The home minister directed that the ongoing projects should be completed on priority and in a time-bound manner, an official statement said. cember, the party is facing huge anti-incumbency due to graft cases against chief minister Virbhadra Singh. Even the Siddaramaialed Congress government in Karnataka may find it tough to win assembly polls due in April next year. While Congress vicepresident Rahul Gandhi still shows all signs of being

a reluctant politician and has kept everybody guessing about his promotion, BJP president Amit Shah is looking for ways to increase party’s tally in various states. Shah is also working on an anti-incumbency back-up plan on many seats for the 2019 polls. After “Congress-Mukt Bharat”, BJP now seems

to have got the heft to take on regional parties such as RJD, BJD and TMC. A fragmented opposition — especially after Nitish Kumar-led JDU walked into the NDA camp — has made Shah’s work a lot easier. He has also followed the policy of poaching leaders from Congress as well as regional parties in states where BJP is weak. He has courted regional parties to the NDA fold in states where BJP has little political presence, like in Tamil Nadu. Shah has also followed the practice of denying ticket to sitting lawmakers to beat anti-incumbency against them. BJP is aware that many of its Lok Sabha MPs, who are political lightweights, may not win in 2019. Moreover, BJP reached near saturation point in states like UP (71/80 seats), Rajasthan (25/25), Gujarat (26/26) and Bihar (31/40) and may lose some seats in 2019. The

party would also face some anti-incumbency in states like Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh where it has been in power for 15 years. Shah, who has undertaken an all-India tour to reach out to prospective voters in untapped territories, has not shied away from visiting the stronghold of opponents of BJP, be it Telangana, Bengal or Odisha. The party is hopeful that these states will bring more seats to the BJP kitty in 2019. However, the party will have to guard against some pressing issues, especially those relating to farmers. Farmers across the country are unhappy, with Madhya Pradesh being the latest example. They have agitated against BJP-led Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra governments. Also, the NDA government at the Centre will have to keep a close watch on the employment level.

Second disqualification petition against 10 MLAs D I M A P U R , AU G 7 (NPN): A second petition seeking disqualification of 10 NPF legislators have been filed before the NLA Speaker by the Whip of the NPF party and chief minister, T.R. Zeliang on Monday, a CMO communiqué informed. The disqualification petition was filed in Form P-2 before the Nagaland L e g i s l a t ive A s s e m b ly (NLA) Speaker as prescribed by the Members of Nagaland Legislative Assembly (Disqualification on Ground of Defection) Rules, 2003, against-- Kiyanilie Peseyie, Y. Vikheho Swu, Chotisuh Sazo, Kuzholuzo Nienu, Yitachu, C.L John, N. Thongwang Konyak, P. Longon, R. Tohanba and R. Torechu. The 10 NPF legislators had “acted contrary to the direction issued by T.R.

Zeliang on July 19, 2017 as Whip of NPF during the sitting of the House held on July 21,” the CMO stated. Earlier on August 4, CMO said that T.R. Zeliang had filed a composite disqualification petition against the 10 legislators seeking their disqualification under Paragraph 2(1) (b) of the Tenth Schedule, of the Constitution. This was necessitated since “the 10 NPF legislators had violated the Whip issued as well as the communication and were absent from the sitting of the House held on July 19 though TR Zeliang had issued Whip to the 10 MLAs on July 18 as per the resolution of the NPF Legislature Party Meeting held on July 4, 2017 appointing him as Whip of the NPF Party under Rule 6(4)(c)(i),” the CMO stated. The dissolution of the NCP in this BJP-ruled state came after NCP leaders alleged that NCP president Sharad Pawar showed “no keen and active interest” in Arunachal Pradesh. “We and supporters of the NCP have lost confidence with the NCP. None of

the central party leaders have shown interest or even visit the state,” said NPP Spokesperson, Nima Sangey Saling. He added that the NCP leaders in Arunachal merged with the NPP after assessing the party’s performance in Manipur besides

seeing “the NPP stand to protect the tribal interest and to ensure sustainable development.” Meanwhile, NPP National President Conrad K. Sangma has appointed former NCP president Gicho Kabak as his party president in Arunachal Pradesh.

Tura, Aug 7: The Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) suffered a major setback in Meghalaya after the confidant of Sohan D.Shira, the most wanted rebel leader surrendered on Monday.

Baltus N. Marak alias Chachat, the area commander surrendered to Abraham T. Sangma, the police chief of South Garo Hills district. “It is a huge setback for the GNLA leadership (Sohan D. Shira). We are expecting more of them to

surrender,” Sangma said. However, the surrendered militant did not deposit any arm or ammunition. “Baltus told us that he decided to give up the GNLA in view of the intensive counter-insurgency operation in the district,” Sangma said.

Rajya Sabha contest in Gujarat : Patel’s fate hangs in balance

Ahmedabad/New Delhi, Aug 7 (IANS): Suspense mounted over the fate of Ahmed Patel, political secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, seeking a fifth term in the Rajya Sabha, with the BJP going all out to stymie his efforts in the biennial elections on Tuesday. The 44 Congress MLAs, who were flown to Bengaluru to prevent “poaching” by the BJP, returned to the state on Monday. They were moved to the Nijanand Resort near Anand. Their family members visited the resort for the Raksha Bandhan festival. Of the 57 party legislators in the 182-member Gujarat Assembly, six quit the party on July 26 and three of them joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on July 28. Of the remaining 51 MLAs, seven, including Shankersinh Vaghela, did not join those who were flown to Bengaluru. Patel, who needs 45 first preference votes in a House with an effective strength of 176 MLAs, expressed confidence that he will win the election with the support of 44 party MLAs, and the backing of two NCP and a lone JD-U member. “I have spoken to Sharad Pawarji and he has promised all help to the Congress. They have even issued a whip. As for Vaghela, he has himself promised that he will vote for me and I believe he will keep his word,” he said. Asked about allegations of surveillance on him and Congress MLAs

Ahmed Patel by the ruling BJP, he said: “I don’t know why I am targeted like this. This is an example of a banana republic. “I have full confidence in my victory tomorrow despite the BJP’s attempts and the numbers will surprise everyone,” Patel said at a private resort near Anand where the 44 MLAs are lodged. On Tuesday, the legislators will directly go to state capital Gandhinagar to vote for the party’s Rajya Sabha nominee Ahmed Patel. BJP chief Amit Shah and Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani are contesting the other two seats, which the BJP is sure to win. The party fielded Congress defector Balwantsinh Rajput as the third candidate in its bid to defeat Patel. “As all of us are united. The BJP cannot threaten any of our MLAs. Horse trading is not possible with those who are with us,” party’s lawmaker Shaktisinh Gohil told reporters outside the airport before leaving for Ahmedabad. In New Delhi, the Congress expressed con-

fidence of Ahmed Patel’s win, despite the BJP’s attempts to lure MLAs through money, power and threats. “BJP, by adopting cheap methods, is conspiring to turn minority votes into majority in Gujarat,” the Congress said. “They can make all attempts to insult the people’s mandate... But we are confident that Ahmed Patel is going to be victorious...,” said Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala while briefing reporters. “People have rejected them. It will be proven in the assembly elections. BJP is worried about the loss in Gujarat, therefore they are trying their best to further lower the level of politics. “However much they (BJP) try to conspire, Congress will walk the path of truth and will win,” he added. Gujarat has seldom experienced political suspense since 1995 when the first BJP government came to power, and after Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has fortified the state like a fiefdom. All the 26 Lok Sabha candidates in the state are from Modi’s party. Problems started when Congress veteran, the maverick 77-year-old Shankersinh Vaghela, called it quits at a public show of strength on his July 21 birthday over not being made the chief ministerial candidate for the 2017 assembly elections and not being handed over the complete reins of the campaign.

Cong slams BJP after Haryana leader stops ambulance New Delhi, Aug 7 (IANS): The Congress on Monday accused the BJP of being “drunk with power” after a BJP leader in Haryana stopped an ambulance over an argument, leading to the death of a patient being ferried to hospital. The Congress also demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President Amit Shah and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar take note of the incident. Haryana Police are investigating a complaint from the family of a patient who died after the ambulance carrying him was allegedly stopped by a BJP leader in Fatehabad town following a minor accident. The victim’s family alleged that nearly 30 minutes of precious time was lost after Fatehabad Municipal Council President Darshan Nagpal, who is from the ruling BJP in Haryana, stopped the ambulance to argue with the ambulance driver. “The patient died before he could be rushed to the local hospital. Our pleas to the BJP leader to let us go went unheeded,” Arun Kumar, a relative of the deceased Naveen Kumar,

Randeep Singh Surjewala told media in Fatehabad, around 225 km from here, on Monday. The patient had cardio issues and was being rushed to a cardiologist. Atma Ram, the incharge of Fatehabad city police station, said the matter was being investigated. The victim’s family alleged that the ambulance brushed Nagpal’s car which infuriated the BJP leader who chased the ambulance and stopped it. The family alleged that the police was unwilling to register a case against the powerful local BJP leader. Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said: “In a case of double whammy, it is now clear that BJP is drunk with power and arrogance of power surpasses everything else.”

Goa bans use of mobiles on assembly floor

Panaji, Aug 7 (IANS): The Speaker of the Goa legislative assembly Pramod Sawant on Monday banned the use of mobile phones on the assembly floor. Sawant, in his concluding remarks on the last day of the Monsoon Session, said that the decision was taken after it was seen that the legislators were answering phone calls or using their smartphones while proceedings of the house were on. “Some members have even been answering calls while seated in the house. The use of mobile phones will henceforth not be permitted on the floor of the house,” Sawant said in his valedictory remarks. The ban will be enforced when the state legislative assembly is convened for its next session.

BEST strike ends after meet with Uddhav Thackeray

LUCKNOW: In the backdrop of three MLCs recently quitting the party and joining the BJP, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday said those who wanted to go, should go without offering any excuse, so that he could ascertain who were with him in “bad times”. Referring to the “excuses” put forward by the three MLCs - Bukkal Nawab, Sarojini Agarwal and Yashwant Singh - while leaving the party, Yadav said, “Some people are saying they were feeling suffocated as the atmosphere of the party had gone bad. This should not be an excuse for leaving the party, they should find a better excuse.” Asserting that the party was doing well and a large number of women, farmers and youths had joined it recently, he said, “Those

Akhilesh Yadav who want to leave the party should not give any excuse... they can just leave. In that case, at least I will get to know who are with us during bad times.” The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister was addressing the party workers at the SP headquarters here on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. Yadav said he had paid a visit to Nawab on Eid and had ‘sewai’ (a sweet dish) with him.

NEW DELHI, AUG 7 (AGENCIES): Nearly two and a half months after Times of India reported that two persons had died in North east Delhi’s Shiv Vihar area as the unauthorised jeans dyeing industry+ in the residential area was polluting the water, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a case to investigate how the illegal industry was running in the area. TOI had reported that the drinking water in the area was contaminated which was leading to severe problems like cancer to the people living there. The agency acted after Delhi high court took suo motu cognizance of

TOI report on May 17 this year in which it was reported that two persons may have been killed in Shiv Vihar, Karawal Nagar, area due to chemicals in the drinking water, as most of the people in the area used bore well. The high court had, on May 25, asked CBI to investigate the development of unauthorised commercial/industrial activities in Shiv Vihar. Mumbai, Aug 7 (IANS): After holding millions of commuters to ransom on Raksha Bandhan, around 37,000 employees of the Bombay Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) called off their 16-hour bus strike on Monday evening following Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray’s intervention. The strike was withdrawn after Thackeray, who met leaders of the nine BEST employees’ unions at his residence, assured them that their demands will be met, including payment of salaries on time. BEST is run by the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corp (BMC), which is ruled by his party. He also discussed measures to restructure the lossmaking BEST, besides a merger of the BEST and BMC’s budgets soon. “Measures to restructure BEST with regard to the BMC are a manifesto for Shiv Sena and we will fulfill it,” Thackeray said after the meeting. On Monday, Mumbaikars, including three million commuters who use BEST buses daily, faced a harrowing time as the entire fleet of nearly 3,800 buses remained in depots across the city as employees belonging to nine unions struck work. However, the strike proved a boon for autorickshaws and taxis which were in huge demand. Many unscrupulous ones made a killing, charging commuters exorbitantly even for short rides, while some commuters opted for shared cabs. Others relied on the app-based cab services. Union leader S. Shashank S. Rao said the employees had demanded that their salaries should be paid on time and a written undertaking should be given but the BMC administration failed to provide it.

Nagaland Post Vol. XXVII NO. 243 Dimapur, Tuesday, August 8, 2017

A different India

W

hat the recent electoral wins by Ram Nath Kovind for president of India and Venkaiah Naidu as vice president of India, reveal is that the results confirm that India’s path to “transformation” has already begun which will be overwhelming after the 2019 elections, if the BJP continues to swallow one state after another. In fact, prime minister Narendra Modi had clearly drew a parallel between 1942-47 and 2017-22 while voicing hope the next five years will see a similar transformation in the country as people drawn from same “family and traditions” will occupy the two top posts. “President, vice-president, speaker... will be from the same ideology and traditions. We too are from the same family,” he said. Naidu got more than the NDA ’s share of the vote, reaffirming the growing acceptability of BJP among regional players. It also established BJP’s dominance over the country’s political horizon, with core party members with strong RSS roots now occupying the top three positions of President, VP, and PM. Having occupied the top three constitutional posts, and being the single largest party in both Houses of Parliament, BJP has reached its zenith. However, retaining its dominance in the next round of polls will be a daunting task for the party, as noted by Modi while addressing NDA MPs on the eve of the VP poll. “The next five years are crucial, and it is significant that the country will have President and Vice-President from NDA during 2017-22,” Modi said. After Ram Nath Kovind became president and followed by Venkaiah Naidu as vice president, the BJP has achieved a historic victory which has acted as a boost while the opposition, particularly the Congress having to content with a similar story of successive defeats. The BJP has already planned and set in motion its other objective- to win more Rajya Sabha seats and ensure that it becomes the largest single party at the expense of the Congress. Therefore, besides the demoralising symbolism of being absent from all the top constitutional positions, the VP’s election has implications for what has been the opposition and Congress’s last source of political standing — the Rajya Sabha. The days are ending for the Congress-led opposition in the Rajya Sabha which used to corner the government with their combined commanding majority, somewhat compensating for their absolute irrelevance in the Lok Sabha. With both Lok Sabha under its total dominance the BJP’s plan to become the largest single party in the Rajya Sabha is about to be realised. With parliament totally under its dominance and also the two executive heads, the BJP/RSS dream of a transformed India is already on the cards. Even with regard to states, the BJP alone runs the government in ten states and coalition governments in five others taking the total to 15 NDA-ruled states. BJP allies and non-NDA partners run governments in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu. The Congress rules in only six states while the Left has two states- Kerala and Tripura, the Trinamool Congress in Bengal and SDP in Sikkim. The BJP has trained its guns on Mamata and has unleashed its plans to take Bengal. Similarly, Kerala is also high on the BJP’s priority list. The battle plans have already been unveiled and the next few months can only promise more vicious politics and violence.

Prayer in the Father’s House

…they found Him in the temple….And He said to them, “…Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” —Luke 2:46, 49 Our Lord’s childhood was not immaturity waiting to grow into manhood— His childhood is an eternal fact. Am I a holy, innocent child of God as a result of my identification with my Lord and Savior? Do I look at my life as being in my Father’s house? Is the Son of God living in His Father’s house within me? The only abiding reality is God Himself, and His order comes to me moment by moment. Am I continually in touch with the reality of God, or do I pray only when things have gone wrong— when there is some disturbance in my life? I must learn to identify myself closely with my Lord in ways of holy fellowship and oneness that some of us have not yet even begun to learn. “…I must be about My Father’s business”— and I must learn to live every moment of my life in my Father’s house. Think about your own circumstances. Are you so closely identified with the Lord’s life that you are simply a child of God, continually talking to Him and realizing that everything comes from His hands? Is the eternal Child in you living in His Father’s house? Is the grace of His ministering life being worked out through you in your home, your business, and in your circle of friends? Have you been wondering why you are going through certain circumstances? In fact, it is not thatyou have to go through them. It is because of your relationship with the Son of God who comes, through the providential will of His Father, into your life. You must allow Him to have His way with you, staying in perfect oneness with Him. The life of your Lord is to become your vital, simple life, and the way He worked and lived among people while here on earth must be the way He works and lives in you.

superstition is any belief or practise that is irrational, arising from ignorance, a misunderstanding of science or causality, a way of behaving that is based on fear of the unknown and faith in magic or luck. It is not based on reason, knowledge, and the superstitious person has no care for the impact of his monstrous belief on others. Superstitions are also convenient and within social boundaries (not the law). Not one says that if you kick your mother while leaving the house, you will have a financial windfall. Or if you sleep in your father’s bed, with him underneath the bed, you will enjoy good health, or if you starve your wife and cut off her nose, you will get a promotion. But when it comes to animals, the imagination runs riot. Many superstitions take the lives of animals. One of the earliest ones I had to deal with many years ago was the beating and killing of foxes in Karnataka in the belief that the harvest would be good. We stopped this – and now people have forgotten that thousands of these poor animals were caught in traps, whipped and burnt by lynch mobs. The harvests continue as before. All ritual animal sacrifice is based on superstition: the pigeon slaughter at

On corruption issue, he adopted a zero tolerance stand particularly, the multi crore scam of Pillai. 2. de- recognition of Rongmei tribe. 3. Shown an exemplary to our Government servants of being regular in attending his office in the Civil Secretariat. 4. Severed ties with the communal party BJP. Ironically, our MLAs have refused to accept these realities (public interest issues) and casually pulled him down for their own selfish interest. Ruguozelhou, Kohima Town

Kamakhya, the goats killed daily in the Devi mandir in Kolkata (we have a court order that says they cannot be killed openly, so now it is done behind doors) believed to cure one of negative emotions such as fear, anger, and jealousy. In which case Kolkata should have been one of the calmest places on earth instead of the most volatile; the buffaloes killed by the Gurkhas during Dashera, the lambs thrown from mountains in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. None of this makes any sense and nor do they bring luck. The most dreadful large scale sacrifice is in Kalahandi once a year – and it remains the poorest place in India inspite of amazing natural resources including precious stones. Superstitions kill owls: poachers catch them, cut off their feet and sell these as good luck charms. I once had a man arrested who had bought an owl from a poacher and was taking him to be killed to pour the blood onto his 4 month baby who had a hole in its heart. If owl parts bring health and good luck today, it was just a few decades ago when they were killed for bringing bad luck: there were beliefs that an owl hooting meant the death of a newborn or the presence of witches. Coming across an owl meant an accident or major misfortune that day. The hunting and ritual killing of these

Stop animal sacrifices beautiful birds has led to their extreme rarity now. Every time you mention China and what they do to animals, my hair stands on end. The Naoyu festival held on June 2 is a festival for peace on earth and a good harvest which, as superstition dictates, starts with the catching and killing of fish and culminates with tying a noose round a bull’s neck and hanging it till the struggling animal dies. But do we do any better in India and Nepal? Every five years, people used to send lakhs of animals from India to the temple of Gadhimai in Bariyapur, Nepal to be slaughtered in 2 days. A team of dedicated Indian activists, a compassionate Nepali Member of Parliament and both Supreme Courts finally stepped in to stop this terrible sacrifice in 2015. Every few minutes an animal is killed in India to appease a god: to get a male child, to get more money, to bring back a soldier alive, to get a good crop. It doesn’t matter which animal it is and what the wish is – a

being has to be killed. For the most part we seem to be a society that lacks logic, sensitivity and the ability to see reason in the practices that have been handed down to us. If I told you to read by candlelight you would laugh because electricity is now the order of the day, but should I tell you that jumping on a bull and tearing its horns off will not bring a good harvest, you would think I was atheistic. Do snakes drink milk? No. But the superstition that guides you to pour milk down the throats of poached rat snakes make sure that thousands die every year during Naga Panchami in July. Are black cats unlucky or has this come from a British superstition? So why are you killing them? Pregnant women must give up their cats - while toxoplasmosis is a risk for foetuses, a woman is more likely to catch it from handling raw meat or digging in the garden, than from her cats. Lizards come to rid your house of insects, but since you believe that should

one fall in the milk - something that has never ever happened - it would be unlucky, so you kill them. Amulets made of the parts of animals promise wealth, protection from evil spirits, even sexual abilities. While it is illegal to sell or buy them, these exotic charms made of the parts of the tigers (I know one member of Parliament who wears a tiger tooth), leopard, crocodile, python, the penis of monitor lizards ,deer bones, snake fangs, camel’s teeth can be bought with ease. Facebook openly displays hundreds of protected animal’s parts for sale and the sellers even give their names and addresses. In Thailand amulets, which the sellers claim have been blessed by monks, feature scriptures wrapped in tiger or snake skin. Common talismans are tiger claws, teeth and skin, elephant molars, tusks and tail hairs and bear hair. Before the government banned “dancing” bears in India, these poor animals were taken across the border and killed for their gall bladders. Their hair was plucked out and made into good luck bracelets for tourists. If you paid the dancing bear owner in Agra, you could see him actually pull out a fistful of hair, from the writhing animal, in front of you – so that you knew it was the genuine article. Kiphire the green town

iphire, the ‘Green Town’ was named in the year 2014 by the then Deputy Commissioner, Kiphire, Kesonyu Yhome, IAS, who declared the town as first ‘Green Town’ in the state, with a vision to par the township standard with the rest of the towns in the state and to uphold the ecological balance of the district with her rich flora and fauna. For which, the people of Kiphire district remains obliged to then Deputy Commissioner for his innovative contributions towards to the growth of state lone Green Town in particular and the district in general. With its inception of Green Town, the township under the ‘Green Project’ through District Innovative Fund (DIF) have done many immense development and also through other related funds like Border Region Grand Fund (BRGF) have been executed for town roads developments too. In such financial years the concern citizens of Kiphire district have witnessed the funds been judiciously utilized against the township, where with those works effectively implemented has extended in

lifting the eye of the Green Town. However, after the lapse of those financial years, one wonders where is funding swindling away and leaving the Green Town at mercy of her own/self in order to laurel high her head against her name given upon? The agencies that are looking after all affairs of the township have to reciprocate as per the aspirations of the people but simply enchanting in bay and belittling the name of township and it’s development into one’s own pouch at the expenses of the town development exchequer is condemnable. Like any other district people, who have a very special relation to their district headquarter? The people of Kiphire district too, in respective of whichever community one belongs or in spite of conflicts, have a very special attachment to its district headquarter, this headquarter township is more than an Administrative headquarter, Economic or Productive asset. It represents home, binds together past, present, future and constitutes their spiritual base. Therefore, its people unlike any other district people, the district

headquarter is an umbilical cord of her people, where its citizens and many others speculates this township as ‘one amongst the fastest development town’ in state. Hence, let the developmental blames and speculations be substantiated in determining as per the developmental reports status and accordingly developmental project reports ink in the paper be put into reality as true to her township name. Also the agencies, leaders of political parties and NGO’s and the elected representative of the district should stand shouldering on the issues, as they knew the funding patterns which are available and on whose disposal this all round development of the township could be enact. Further, should forfeit swindling of township development and let all the responsible stakeholders extend consensual approaches under various funding for judicious implementation of development works in the township declared as Green Town in whatsoever and let ones’ legacy be imprint beyond. Tamphung landslide, a doomed and providential miracle

(From previous issue) Serendipitously, there was a respite which I belief could only be the Mighty Hands of our Almighty Who keep hold of the landslide from falling for a particular period of time, that allowed me to withdrew my lady wife and Mr. Insolungbe from the very peril zone. On seeing the miracle disastrous consequence, my lady wife cried, which I replied, ‘Do not cry! For our Almighty God had listened to our prayer and we are saved from the incredible incident. Instead, let us praise Thee for the miracle He had done’. Then I shouted, “Hallelujah! Praise the Lord”, my heart was brimming with joy. Regrettably, on the other hand, the vindictive landslide had claimed the life of two persons on that fateful night. 37 years old widow Lt. Puiranzaile D/o Ex-Pastor, Tamphung Baptist Church Namzu, a mother of four kids was killed. While another man

Lt. Ileulungbe, S/o Haicanglakpe, a father of two whose spouse is presently pregnant was also killed. The body of the latter was missing until the next mid-day. I.e. the 14th July 2017. On the same day, volunteers from some of the neighboring villages of Nagaland namely, Peletkie, Ndunglwa, Puilwa and some volunteers from Peren Town had physically and unstintingly volunteered in the search operation of the missing body. Finally, with relentless efforts of volunteers from neighboring villages along-with the villagers had discovered the body in the evening at 4:00 PM whose body was totally buried underground. In this connection, I on behalf of the all the victims and citizens of Tamphung village would like to convey my ineffable gratitude to the Chief Minister, N Biren Singh, T.A and hills Minister A Neli Kayisii, DC Senapati Atiam Moiba, Medical Team, Dr. Loli CMO

Senapati, Chairman of ADC, ML Markson, Vice Chairman, John Hingbe, Colleagues, Disaster Management Group, NGOs, Executive Secretary, ZBCC and colleagues, neighboring villages from Nagaland and all individual concern who on learning the sudden disaster had physically, financially and materially assisted us during our darkest hour in the calamitous history of Tamphung. In reciprocation, we are incapable of repaying the sacrifices you had made and the sympathy you had shown upon us. May the Almighty God repay you beyond your contributions and sacrifices you had made. God’s graciousness is miracle! I was swept off by the conflation of elements and as I called unto His Holy Name to spare me from this punic incident, out of nowhere I was dispensed from the terrifying area. Psalms No. 50:15 says “Call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you,

and you shall glorify me.” And Psalms No. 145:18 says, “The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.” Likewise, God is Impeccable, God never failed. As I constantly called unto His Holy Name with truth, He had answered even beyond my prayer. May His Highness and Lofty Name continue to elevate forever. Last, but not the least! Never did I think of this natural calamity and never did it happen in the history of Tamphung. Here, I would like to make an appeal that, if this catastrophe did occurred due to the negative impinge left by the people of Tamphung in the past, I do sincerely appeal God to forgive our nefarious deeds and put a full stop from recurrence of such incident in the future. AMEN! (Concluded) Nhailang, Pastor, Tamphung Baptist Church, Senapati District, Manipur

car mirrors as the ultimate protector against accidents and bad luck. What brings you luck? Is it dead animals – beings so unlucky that they were born on this planet and could not even protect themselves? Or is it kindness, compassion and love for this earth that will bring you happiness? Letting people murder in the name of superstition is almost as bad as doing it yourself. Stop animal sacrifices wherever you think they take place. If you find anyone selling animal charms on the net, let me know and we will take action. PS: Someone I know bought a Vodaphone puppy two months ago. He keeps it in a cage during the day and lets it out to wander disconsolately alone at night. When I objected, the man, normally mild and amenable, became stupidly adamant at the thought of giving up a dog, which clearly neither he nor his family wanted. My secretary asked his local priest: it turned out that the man had had a series of scooter accidents recently and he was told that keeping a dog at home would stop them. The fact that he drinks during the day, of course, has no bearing on what happens to him on the road. To join the animal welfare movement contact gandhim@nic.in, www.peopleforanimalsindia.org

Health : A Collective responsibility

“H

ealth is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’’, says the constitution of the World Health Organization. It also mentions ‘Health’ as a fundamental right for every human being. The definition of health is vast with endless possibilities. In India, Health is a state subject wherein the state has to ensure its citizens are not denied their right to a healthy life. Every state has a department of Health and Family Welfare which spearheads the challenge. But ‘health’ is a complex phenomenon and is not limited to drugs, health workers and hospitals. The health of a nation is highly dependent on its socioeconomic determinants, many of which are outside the purview of the Health Department. Nutrition (availability/ dietary practises), per capita income, hygiene and sanitation, traditional practises/ beliefs, literacy, governance, and health seeking behaviour are all directly linked to health. I’ll discuss in brief the most important sectors which deals with these crucial determinants and the challenges; 1. Social Welfare / Women and Child Development / ICDS The Integrated Child Development Services has a direct bearing on the health of children and mothers. Supplementary nutrition of children and mothers, pre -school education, health education, growth monitoring and Immunization remain the core functions of ICDS. Anganwadis work in the community through the Anganwadi Centres in most villages. It is imperative that thesethesecentres function optimally along with the workers. ASHAs from the health department and Anganwadis have toconstantly work together to reach the desired objectives. (To be concluded) Dr.Longri Kichu, Consultant, UNICEF

Campaign for God honouring society

Despite the Clean Election Campaign by the Church and a call to probity, the By-election in Northern Angami Assembly Constituency – II held on 29th July 2017 received mixed response. To those willfully designed, planned and distributed money to buy votes, may God deal with you justly. To those who willfully sold their votes, may God deal with you justly. To those women who took turns carrying infant baby on their back for easy access to polling station and cast proxy votes, may God deal with you justly. To those church leaders who willfully acted in contradiction to the campaign, I bow my head in shame for you. God will deal with you and more severely. Despite the sins committed by many, there are also many who have responded willfully to the call of Clean Election and chose to remain clean. May God bless you richly and increase your tribe. I want to thank all the “just-loving” people, individuals and organizations, who have made effort for a better tomorrow. The Angami Baptist Church Council will continue to campaign for a God-honoring society and will not be deterred nor distracted by determined opposing elements in any way. V. Atsi Dolie, Executive Director, Angami Baptist Church Council

Cong facing existential crisis: Jairam Ramesh

KOCHI, Aug 7 (Agencies): The Congress is facing an “existential crisis”, senior party leader Jairam Ramesh on Monday said and pitched for “a collective effort” by party leaders to “overcome” the challenges it faced from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah. Ramesh also said that business as usual approach will not work against Modi and Shah and advocated for a flexibility in approach to make Congress relevant. “Yes, the Congress party is facing a very serious crisis,” Ramesh told PTI in an interview. He said the Congress had faced “electoral crisis” from 1996 to 2004 when it

was out of power. The party had also faced “electoral crisis” in 1977 when it lost the elections held soon after the emergency. “But today, I would say that the Congress is facing an existential crisis. It is not an electoral crisis. The party really is in deep crisis,” he said, when asked whether the threat of “poaching” of MLAs posed by the BJP in Gujarat had forced the party to transport its MLAs to Karnataka to ensure party leader Ahmed Patel’s victory in the Rajya Sabha polls. He, however, justified the Gujarat Congress’s decision to send 44 of its MLAs to a resort in party-ruled Karnataka on July 29 to fend off the alleged “poaching” attempts by BJP, saying the saffron party had also “transported” MLAs in the past. He said it was wrong for the Congress party to think that anti-incumbency will work automatically against the Modi-led government in the states being ruled by the BJP in the

elections. “We have to understand we are up against Modi, Shah. And they think differently, they act differently, and if we are not flexible in our approach, we will become irrelevant, frankly,” the Congress leader said. He said the Congress party must also recognise that India has changed. “Old slogans don’t work, old formulas don’t work, old mantras don’t work. India has changed, the Congress party has to change,” he said. The former Union minister hoped that party vicepresident Rahul Gandhi would end the uncertainty over his taking over as the Congress president to make the party ready for crucial electoral battles in key states in 2018 and the Lok Sabha polls scheduled a year later. “I think in all probability, Rahul Gandhi will take charge (as Congress president) before the end of 2017,” he said. The senior leader lamented that he had been proved wrong in the past

NCDRC agrees to hear plea from Johnsons & Johnsons

NEW DELHI, AUG 7 (AGENCIES): Taking cue from a US court directing Johnsons and Johnsons to pay whopping 8.3 million US dollars as damages to a patient for supplying a defective artificial hip, a Punebased businessman has approached the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission(NCDRC) which asked the company to respond on his plea for compensation of Rs 3.5 crore for the defective product. The petitioner, Purushotam Lohia, the Chief Executive of real estate group Lohia Jain Promoters and Builders, had undergone total hip replacement surgery in 2008, two years after his

hip was badly damaged in a road accident. The implant, known as the Articular Surface Replacement(ASR) was supplied by multi-national company Johnsons and Johnsons Ltd through its sister concern DePuy Orthopaedics. ASR was later found to be defective and the company had recalled the products in August 2010. As ASR was found to be flawed, civil suits were filed in US courts by aggrieved patients for compensation and court directed the company to pay damages to them for their pain and emotional suffering due to use of defective product. A jury in Los An-

geles in 2013 awarded 8.3 million US dollar in one such case. Lohia, who had to undergo another surgery for removing the defective ASR and to insert new transplant in his body, has approached NCDRC through his advocate Neela Gokhale for compensation of Rs 3.5 crore. “The companies had accepted the liability for the defective piece and had commenced organising revisional surgeries. The companies were also paying for the revisional surgeries and had commenced paying compensation to thousands of people affected in USA and UK.

about his prediction about Rahul’s assuming charge of the top party job. “I thought it will happen in 2015, it didn’t happen. I thought it will happen in 2016, it didn’t happen. So I am the wrong person to ask this question. I feel that it may happen before the end of 2017,” Ramesh said. He said he had “no” indication about appointment of Rahul Gandhi as Congress president. “I have only expectation. That’s all. In 2018 and 2019 you will be busy with elections. State elections, national elections...and this type of thing ...uncertainty is not good,” and urged the Gandhi scion to “finish it off.” Asked if there is anyone in the Congress party to give a strong challenge to Modi in 2019 elections, Ramesh said, “I have always maintained that it is the collective strength of the Congress that will overcome Mr Modi not some individual magic wand”. “It has to be a collective effort,” he said.

NEW DELHI, AUG 7 (AGENCIES): The Left and NDA continued to trade charges on Monday with the CPM now demanding an explanation from the BJP on reports that state-run banks have written off bad loans worth Rs 81,683 crore in 2016-17. Taking to Twitter, CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury aimed a jibe at finance minister Arun Jaitley, asking him to respond to the alleged financial mess brewing in the country, if “he has completed his vacation in Kerala.” Yechury said, “This govt can write off Rs 83,000 cr of loans for big orporate but has no resources to stop manual scavenging & dangerous work in sewers….If the FM has completed his vacation in Kerala, will he answer how this write off of loans has happened?” Yechury’s tweet on Monday was pointing to Jaitley’s Sunday visit to Kerala, during which he visited the family of the RSS worker allegedly killed by CPM workers in Kerala on June 29. Following his visit, the finance minister also accused the CPM of “eliminating rivals and creating an environment of violence” in the state.

Chandigarh stalking case: Police say not under pressure

Chandigarh, AUG 7 (AGENCIES): Under criticism from over its flipflop in the case of the stalking of a senior IAS officer’s daughter by the son of Haryana BJP president Subhash Barala, Chandigarh Police on Monday said that it was investigating the case with an “open mind” and more sections could be “added at a later stage” if required. Chandigarh’s senior superintendent of Police Eish Singhal told media here that the incident was being investigated thoroughly and legal opinion was being taken in the matter. “We are investigating the case with an open mind. If any section has

to be added at a later stage, we will do it,” he said, while trying to evade direct questions on the role of the Chandigarh Police in trying to shield the main accused, Vikas Barala, and his friend Ashish Kumar. “We are not doing anything under pressure. We are a professional investigating agency and we are doing our job,” Singhal said. He blamed the media for conducting a “media trial” in the matter. “We have reconstructed the scene of the crime. We are trying to get the CCTV footage. We will get the technical analysis of this done. We have been investigating it only for three days.,” he said.

LO N D O N, AU G 7 (AGENCIES): The British government denied Monday that it has agreed on the amount of its European Union exit bill, after a report emerged that it plans offer the bloc 36 billion pounds ($47 billion), reports AP. Britain’s outstanding tab to settle commitments it made as an EU member is one of the biggest issues confronting the divorce talks. The EU says it won’t discuss future trade relations with Britain until there is progress on the bill and other key issues. The EU has not put an official number on the size of the bill, but estimates have ranged as high as 100 billion euros ($118 billion). Britain voted in a referendum last year to quit the 28-nation bloc and is due to leave in March 2019. EU budget commissioner Guenther Oettinger told Germany’s Bild newspaper in comments published Monday that Britain would remain bound by some previous commitments to long-term projects after Brexit and “will therefore have to transfer funds to Brussels at least until 2020.” The size of the bill is a hot political issue in Britain, with some anti-EU politicians insisting the country should pay nothing at all. The Sunday Telegraph reported that British officials have decided to offer 36 billion pounds, or 40 billion euros, in a bid to move talks on to the key issue of trade. But Prime Minister Theresa May’s spokesman, James Slack, said “I don’t recognize” the figure. K

It might change because the area is inaccessible and no telephone networks are working to get an update,” he told AFP. The Taliban and Islamic State fighters have regularly clashed since the latter gained a foothold in eastern Afghanistan in 2015, as the two vie for supremacy in the war-torn country.

Around 20 men led by an army officer who had deserted battled troops in the base in the third city of Valencia for three hours yesterday, officials said. The raid ended with two of the attackers being killed and eight captured, Maduro said on state television. It also prohibits countries from increasing the current numbers of North Korean laborers working abroad, bans new joint ventures with North Korea and any new investment in current joint ventures. U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the support of China and Russia for the latest sanctions sent a strong message to North Korea about what was expected of it.

South Korea are technically still at war because their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said North Korea’s statement on the U.N. sanctions was “expected” given the North’s position. “The key point is that we cannot allow the situation to escalate and we must find a way to reverse the situation amid the current crisis,” he said. He added that it is “only fair” that North Korea sit with other foreign ministers at The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to discuss U.N. Security Council sanctions. “We can voice our own opinions, as can North Korea,” he said. Wang also said that the core of the Korean Peninsula issue is a security issue, not an economic issue, as North Korea believes it faces an external security threat, while other parties believe Pyongyang’s nuclear and missiles programs are a threat.

U.N. sanctions infringed on its sovereignty, and vowed to take “righteous action”, according to the North’s official news agency. In a statement to the Manila forum on Monday, Pyongyang said it would never place its nuclear program on the negotiating table as long as the United States maintained a hostile policy against the North. In a transcript of a statement by Foreign Minister Rib Yong-ho, which was distributed to media in the Philippine capital, Pyongyang called the new U.N. sanctions “fabricated”, and warned there would be “strong follow-up measures”. It noted that its intercontinental ballistic missile tests last month proved the entire United States was in its firing range, and those missiles were a legitimate means of self-defense. North Korea has long accused the United States and South Korea of escalating tensions by conducting military drills. North and

SEOUL/MANILA, AUG 7 (AGENCIES): South Korean President Moon Jae-in and his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, agreed to apply maximum pressure and sanctions on North Korea in a telephone call on Monday, while China expressed hope that North and South Korea could resume contact soon, reports Reuters. The U.N. Security Council unanimously imposed new sanctions on North Korea on Saturday aimed at pressuring Pyongyang to end its nuclear program. The sanctions could slash North Korea’s $3 billion annual export revenue by a third. North Korea responded robustly and in traditional fashion on Monday, saying the U.N. moves were unwarranted and unfair, and it was ready to teach the United States a “severe lesson” if it launched an attack. The U.S.-drafted resolution bans North Korean exports of coal, iron, iron ore, lead, lead ore and seafood following Pyongyang’s

KOHIMA, AUG 7 (NPN): Beauty and Aesthetic Society of Nagaland (BASN) is all set to kick off Miss Nagaland 2017, Campus Audition in four colleges to explore talented women for the upcoming Miss Nagaland contest to be held in December. Informing this in a press conference at Kohima Monday BASN member Mele Puchoi said the idea was to get talented girls as it had realized that many versatile girls do not come out on stage while it had witnessed many Naga girls attain higher heights in the North East, National and International levels.

Pucho said it was the dream of BASN and Nagas to see Naga young woman winning titles in higher level and said if campus audition gets successful, then it will be held in other colleges in other districts in the near future as well. He said initially, colleges like Alder college, Sazolie college, Science college Jotsoma and St. Joseph’s College were in the list for 2017. Pucho added that main audition will be held on September 6 and said this audition will be for those districts who do not conduct the event, thereby it envisages in creating platform for the young women to participate in the beauty pageant. Smartphones are rendering teenagers lonely and distressed

T

eenagers in the US today are working less, having less sex and are far less happy than previous generations because of increased use of smartphones, says a social psychologist who has been researching generational differences for 25 years. In an article for The Atlantic, adapted from her forthcoming book on the current generation -- the iGen, as she calls it, Jean Twenge says there is compelling evidence that the devices we have placed in young people’s hands are having profound effects on their lives -- and making them seriously unhappy. The statistics, as outlined by Twenge, are alarming, Fortune.com reported on Sunday. While only 56 per cent of high school seniors dated in 2015, compared to 85 per cent for Gen Xers and Baby Boomers, the number of teenagers who spend daily time with friends dropped by 40 per cent between 2000 and 2015, it said.

There was talk that the show was not garnering ample ratings, especially after actors Sunil Grover, Ali Asgar and Chandan Prabhakar walked out following a spat. Happy with the renewal of his contract, Kapil said in a statement: “I am deeply touched with the warmth and love the audience has showered on us over the years. It’s their belief and undying devotion that encourages us to continue to reinvent ourselves and bring smiles to every household week on week.” “I am grateful to Sony Entertainment Channel for believing in me and our show and supporting us in creating and bringing K

The decline in dating tracks with a decline in sexual activity, Twenge said.

While this might have had a positive impact on teenage birth rate which hit an all-time low in 2016, down 67 per cent since its modern peak in 1991, Twenge said that increased smartphone use is also linked to loneliness and depression among the postmillennial generation. Today’s teenagers are also working less than their predecessors and driving less, often depending on parents for the rides, according to the research. So, if they are not meeting their friends, working less, and not often going on a date, what are they doing with all that time?

Zverev wins Citi Open title

Alexander Zverev with his Citi Open trophy.

Washington, Aug 7 (Agencies): Alexander Zverev claimed his fourth title of the year, beating Kevin Anderson in straight sets to win the Citi Open in Washington. The young German is enjoying a blistering breakthrough season and his 6-4 6-4 win over the South African means only Roger Federer (5) has won more titles this year. The 20-year-old has risen to eighth in the world rankings and is the runaway leader of the NextGen Race to Milan after claiming titles in Montpellier, Rome and Munich already in 2017. He will now head to Montreal for next week’s latest leg of the Masters series. Zverev has reached five finals this year, on three different surfaces, and now five titles since making his breakthrough in St Petersburg in September last year. He needed just a solitary break to claim the opening set and repeated the feat in the second set as Anderson struggling to

make any inroads. Playing in his first final for two years Anderson’s usually reliable huge serve made little impact on Zverev whose own blistering serve left his 31-yearold with little chance of a break of serve. When Zverev broke in the opening game of the second set he eased to the the title in just 69 minutes without facing a single break point in the match, dropping just nine points on his own serve. Both men now head to Canada for the Montreal Masters where Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal make their first appearances since Wimbledon. Zverev has a firstround bye and will face either Brayden Schnur or Richard Gasquet in the second round while Anderson will have just a couple of days rest before taking on Dudi Sela in the opening round.

Ronaldo’s summer has been overshadowed by accusations of tax evasion in Spain, which led to him being appearing in court last week, and speculation over his future. According to a report, Ronaldo told the court he “would like to return to England” due to his tax troubles in Spain. The World Player of the Year only returned to training with his Real teammates on Saturday as he was handed an extended summer break after playing for Portugal at the Confederations Cup and is still not expected to start. the wing. Martens turned with the ball just outside the box in the 28th minute and her low left-footer beat diving Danish keeper Stina Petersen at her left post. The valiant Danes equalised on 33 minutes when skipper Per nille Harder picked up a long pass on the right wing, took it inside the box and wrongfooted Dutch keeper Sari van Veenendaal, scoring with a low left-foot shot to her left post. Spitse then scored five minutes after the break with a low shot from a freekick and Miedema made it 4-2 after fooling a defender inside the box and beating Petersen with a low shot in the 89th minute. The Dutch are only the fourth team to lift the trophy after eight-time

champions Germany, twotime winners Norway and Sweden, who won the first edition in 1984. Denmark, like the Dutch playing in their first final, made two changes in their starting line-up as Sofie Junge Pedersen replaced midfielder Line Jensen, out with a torn knee ligament, while Sandvej came in for left-back Line Roddik. Propelled by a soldout Twente stadium in Enschede, the Dutch dominated the early minutes of a very lively first half, but Denmark’s first goal levelled the situation on the pitch. Martens could have extended her scoring record after 15 minutes, when van de Sanden’s low cross found her inside the box, but Petersen had little

Sara Errani gets two months ban for doping violation

Sara Errani

Rome, Aug 7 (Agencies): Former French Open finalist Sara Errani has been suspended for two months for violation of anti-doping code that governs International Tennis Federation (ITF). She was found to have committed an Anti-Doping Rule Violation under Article 2.1 of the Programme with traces of letrozole, which is an aromatase inhibitor that is included under section S4 (Hormone and Metabolic Modulators) of the 2017 WADA Prohibited List in her urine sample. As a re-

sult, she has been suspended for a period of two months, beginning on August 3 and ending on October 2. Additionally, her results between February 16 (date of sample collection) and June 7 (date of her next test, which was negative) should be disqualified, the Independent Tribunal ruling on the case determined. The substance anastrozole is used in the treatment of breast cancer but also a masking agent that can hide the presence of the male hormone testosterone. Errani had competed at

the Roland Garros final in 2012 where she lost to Maria Sharapova and reached her highest ever world ranking of five the following year which was a huge rise for a player who had only just entered the top 100. 2012 would constitute as her best year where she reached quarters of Australian Open and semi-finals of US Open as well. But her prominence is felt most in the doubles department where she has completed a career Grand Slam – winning all four Grand Slams. She won all her titles alongside fellow Italian Roberta Vinci with their titles coming in 2012, 2013 and 2014. As per reports in Italy, she was due to play in Canada but has returned back home to defend herself following the public announcement by the ITF. Italian rower Niccolo Mornati, a four-time medallist at the world championships, tested positive in 2016 for the same substance.

trouble clearing her weak shot. Nadim had two good chances to add to her opener, but her one-on-one with Van Veenendaal ended in the hands of the Dutch keeper and then she missed a cross. In the second half, Van Es sent a long-range shot wide, Petersen superbly stopped Miedema’s blast from long range and Jackie Groenen narrowly missed from long range. At the other end, Katrine Veje’s attempt from inside the box missed the Dutch goal, just like a rebound from a corner by substitute Frederikke Thogersen. Troelsgaard missed the top corner by an inch five minutes from the end as the Danes pushed for an equaliser.

‘Neymar not bigger than Barcelona’

Brazilian soccer star Neymar waves to fans at the Parc des Princes stadium in Paris.

BARCELONA, Aug 7 (Agencies): Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu insisted no player is bigger than the Catalan giants on Monday in the wake of Neymar’s world record 222 million euro ($264 million) move to Paris Saint-Germain. Bar tomeu and his board are under pressure to wisely reinvest the huge sum, which more than dou-

bled the previous record for a transfer fee, before the transfer window closes on August 31. “No player is above Barca, Bartomeu told the world congress of Barca supporters groups. “You know that Neymar formed part of the success of our club, but Neymar is now history. He wanted to go. It was his decision although we did

everything in our hands for him to stay. Barca were powerless to stop Neymar leaving after PSG met the buyout clause in the Brazilian’s contract, which he had signed just last year. However, Bartomeu defended himself from criticism that the club should have insisted on inserting a much higher buyout clause in that deal to fend off PSG’s millions. Neymar’s clause rose from 200 to 222 million from July 1 and would have jumped to 250 million had he entered the third year of the five-year deal. “We foresaw that he could leave in the future, that is why we raised his buyout clause in the new contact, added Bartomeu. “Receiving this money allows us to face the future with guarantees to strengthen the team. When the doubts over his future began we were calm because his decision would be a good one

Kerala HC lifts life ban on Sreesanth

Kochi, Aug 7 (IANS): The Kerala High Court on Monday lifted the life ban imposed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on discarded Indian pacer S. Sreesanth. Sreesanth had approached the court last year after the BCCI failed to revoke the life ban though he was exonerated by a Delhi court of the charge of involvement in a spot-fixing scandal, which marred the Indian Premier League in 2013. Sreesanth had to cool his heels in Tihar Central Jail in Delhi in May 2013 in the case. He was arrested by the Delhi Police in Mumbai on May 17 that year along with former Rajasthan Royals teammates Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan. The BCCI’s Disciplinary Committee headed by present Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had slapped a life-time ban on Sreesanth and Chavan on September 13, 2013. Sreesanth was present in the High Court when it gave the verdict, and asserted that he is noew determined kick-start his cricket career. “I am thankful to all who stood with me in my period of distress. Now I will have to display my match fitness. I have a few club tournaments that are coming up. I will use these matches to regain my fitness. have to regain my fitness, he said, adding “I want to thank all the people who stood with me. His counsel Sivan Madethil told the media that the court while lifting the ban pointed out that the BCCI did not do a clean job by enforcing a life ban on the bowler. “There was no iota of evidence against Sreesanth, and the BCCI by slapping a life ban was callous, ruining the career of a player, Madethil said. Sreesanth wrote a letter to the BCCI last year, asking it to revoke his ban. In reply, the BCCI wrote that it is very particular in ensuring that discipline is maintained

over Germany’s Carolin Schafer - roughly 12 seconds on the track. That meant Thiam could take it easy in the final heat and that is exactly what she did, coming last in a time of 2:21.42 which was still enough as she finished on 6,784 points. Schafer came seventh

in a time of 2:15.34 to secure the silver medal on 6,696 points. Anouk Vetter of the Netherlands thrilled the crowd earlier on Sunday with a championship best javelin throw of 58.41 metres which proved crucial in helping her take the bronze on 6,636.

U-17 football: India hold Chile 1-1 NEW DELHI, Aug 7 (PTI): The India U-17 football team produced a spirited display to hold fancied Chile to a 1-1 draw in the final match of its Torneo de 4 Naciones Tournament tour in Mexico City. Chile, who finished runners-up to Brazil in their South American U-17 Championships to qualify for the World Cup, scored in the 40th minute after India’s defence failed to clear the ball. India’s Nongdamba Naorem found the equaliser in the final 10 minutes of the game. Two minutes later, the Blue Tigers were reduced to 10 men after Aniket was given a marching order last night. Preparing for the upcoming U-17 World Cup, India is on an exposure trip. India had a disappointing start to the tournament as host Mexico thrashed them 5-1 in their opening game before Colombia, who are in Group A alongside India in the World Cup, went on to win 3-0.
