DIMAPUR, AUG 5 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president, K Therie, on Saturday maintained that the future of Naga People’s Front (NPF) was no more in Nagaland, saying the party has been reduced to “a fragmented, divided party fighting for their own interests and not for the public.” Speaking at the general meeting of 16-Pfütsero Assembly Constituency Congress Committee (ACCC) at Pfütsero town hall, Therie recalled NPF’s assertion that BJP was its natural ally but wondered why NPF changed its stand after Dr. Shürhozelie was ousted. He said that all 60 MLAs have forgotten the public and were fighting for portfolios and that public also dare not question them since they themselves involved in corrupt practices during election. He said there was no guarantee whether the 60 MLAs would return in the next general election but stressed that those who endorsed RSS ideology should be defeated. Therie also said that the NPF government was in fear of BJP because of corruption of its leaders. (Cont’d on p-7)

He said after completing all formalities, seven metric tons of coffee, which was stocked in Kolkata, was all set to reach Cape Town by November. This would be the first step to hit the international market, Kikheto added. Kikheto pointed out that this year, Nagaland was able to export 2400 kgs of coffee. By 2018, he said that the department was optimistic to export 4200 kgs. Buoyed by the success

Kikheto said currently coffee under the brand ‘Nagaland Coffee’ which is being exported to South Africa, would also be exported to other parts of the globe. DIMAPUR, AUG 5 (NPN): Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) has sought clear clarification from the Youth Resources & Sports (YR&S) department and the state government with regard to the departmental examination for the post of storekeeper and LDA-cum-computer assistant under YR&S department. In a representation addressed to director YR&S, ENSF vice-president, Hamnyei Angh, and asst. general secretary, Kumcho Yimchunger, urged the department not to declare the result until clarification was justified. Alleging that the department was not adhering to 25% job reservation policy of the state government for the eastern Nagas viz Chang, Konyak, Phom, Sangtam, Khiamniungan and Yimchunger, the federation demanded that the department implement 25% job reservation or cancel the result and re-advertise the same “if there is any anomalies or manipulation in filling up the posts.” ENSF cautioned that failure to get positive response from the department would compel the federation to take its own course of action. The federation also stated that it would under any circumstances fight for justice that had been denied.
Flood-hit NE at risk of malaria, JE New Delhi, Aug 5 (Agencies): Tens of thousands of flood survivors in the North Eastern states particularly Assam and Manipur are at risk of contracting diseases such as malaria and Japanese encephalitis, as water levels begin to recede leaving behind conditions ripe for mosquito-breeding, the Red Cross has warned. More than 100 people have died in northeastern parts of India and tens of thousands have been displaced by the floods which have submerged villages, washed away vast tracts of farmland and destroyed roads and bridges. But the Red Cross said the spread of water- and vector- borne diseases was a concern as water levels begin to fall in some parts of Assam and Manipur states, and people in government relief camps return to their homes in low-lying areas.
“Ongoing heavy rain and a third wave of flooding continues to submerge villages in both states and bring misery and desperation,” said Vijay Kumar Ummidi from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in India. “But in some districts, floodwaters are starting to recede, exposing damaged toilets, contaminated water sources and standing water that is certain to attract more mosquitoes,” he said in a statement late on Thursday. Red Cross workers added that they were already recording an increase in diseases in Manipur state which borders Myanmar. “We are already seeing a rise in cases of malaria, Japanese encephalitis and other vector-borne diseases, as well as infections from unsafe drinking, cooking and bathing water,” said Amul Kumar from the Indian Red Cross in Manipur. Monsoon
rains from June to September are vital for its agriculture, which makes up 18% of its GDP and provides employment for almost half its 1.3 billion population. But in many states, the rains frequently cause rivers such as the Brahmaputra and their tributaries to overflow and flooding forces millions into temporary camps, destroys homes and exposes people to diseases such as malaria and diarrhoea. Red Cross said people required basic aid ranging from tarpaulins and soap to kitchen utensils as well as temporary toilets, water treatment and storage systems, disinfectants and mosquito nets. “The needs are enormous, so we are focusing on the health and wellbeing of the poorest of the poor, those who have lost everything, and single moms, the elderly and other vulnerable people who are truly struggling to get by,” said Ummidi. It also lamented that the road was covered by overgrown weeds from both sides with no visible sign of PWD (NH) labour force. ASM also expressed apprehension that a bridge over Lasong River was on the verge of collapsing. During the social work, ASM said it engaged two excavators and five dumper trucks with hundreds of volunteers to repair the road. They expressed profound gratitude to all the participants and donors in making the social work a success. ASM celebrated its golden jubilee on
August 4 and subsequently the social work was organized in commemoration of the jubilee. ASM said the two lane road construction work between Changtongya and Longleng was awarded to M/S Gayatri and Maytas Company. However the company had abruptly abandoned the construction work with a number of excuses. “Now the public are the victims of excuses thoughtlessly expressed by the construction company as well as the state government time and again,” stated ASM.

Tax raids on Karnataka Minister, relatives end
Bengaluru, Aug 5 (IANS): The Income Tax Department has almost concluded its searches at the houses/premises of Karnataka Energy Minister D.K. Shivakumar, his relatives and friends across the state as well as in Delhi, a senior official said on Saturday. “Our search and seizure operations against the Minister, his relatives and friends have almost ended, pending formalities, as collection and documentation of seized material takes time,” a senior I-T Department official told IANS here. Admitting that the operation was a marathon exercise in terms of time (80 hours), locations (67) and officials involved (300), the officer said the Department’s Investigation Wing would decide when to go public with the details. “The Investigation Wing Director General alone can decide when and what information can be given to the public after the search teams submit their reports (panchanamas) along with seizures. These things take time,” said the official of the IT Department’s Karnataka

D.K. Shivakumar and Goa region. Raids began at the Minister’s residence in the city, at Kanakapura, and South Delhi at 7 a.m. on August 2 and continued till Saturday noon, with the Central Reserve Police Force providing security to the raiding teams. S i m u l t a n e o u s l y, searches were conducted at the premises of the Minister’s brother D.K. Suresh at Ramanagara in Bengaluru Rural district, Shivakumar’s father-in-law Thimmaiah at Mysuru, brother-in-law’s house and even his astrologer Dwarakanath Guruji in Bengaluru. Raids were also conducted on the business associates of the Minister in Bengaluru and Hassan in the state.
The teams early Wednesday raided the deluxe suite of the Minister at the Eagleton Resort at Bidadi, about 40km from here, where he was staying to host 44 Congress lawmakers from Gujarat. The legislators flew into Bengaluru on July 29 from Ahmedabad to avoid poaching attempts by the rival Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the August 8 Rajya Sabha polls in the western state. The I-T Department said in a statement on August 2 that the raids were not connected to the Gujarat legislators’ stay at the resort and that the timing was coincidental. After the sleuths left his residence, a relieved Shivakumar told reporters that he never worked against the spirit of the law and had nothing to hide. “I would like to thank all my leaders across the country who stood by me in the hour of crisis. I will not embarrass my party or will let down my leaders,” said the Minister. Thanking the media, Shivakumar said he would not talk about the raids or seizures till he got the ‘panchanama’ from the I-T Department.

Sarabjit’s sister seek probe in role of Pak right activist
Dalbir Singh Kaur (R) the sister of Sarabjit Singh who was brutally murdered in Pakistan. A M R I T S AR , AUG 5 (AGENCIES): Four years after the death of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh in a brutal attack inside Pakistan’s Kot Lakhpat jail, his sister Dalbir Kaur has cast aspersions on the role of Pakistani right activist Ansar Burney in his efforts of freeing Sarabjit Singh, and has sought a probe into his role. “I have already sent fax message seeking appointment from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged him to take up the issue of brutal death of my brother in Pakistan through diplomatic channel and also ask the Pakistan government to probe into the role of Ansar Burney in Save Sarabjit Campaign” said Dalbir Kaur while talking to TOI on Saturday. Notably Ansar Burney had played a significant role
by way of filing petitions in Pakistan court in favour of Sarabjit and generating a movement for securing his freedom. “But I am suspicious of his role which must be probed for which I am meeting Modi” said Dalbir, adding that she had already discussed the role of Burney with few political leaders. She said Pakistan authorities were not providing her any information when she inquired about action taken against inmates of Kot Lakhpat jail Amer Aftab and Mudassar, who allegedly attacked Sarabjit Singh. “My brother is no more but the perpetrators of crime against him must be uncovered so that no other Indian in Pakistan jail meets the same fate in future” she said.
Deoni breeding faces hurdles amid clamours to save cows B e l ag av i , Au g 5 (AGENCIES): The debate and commotion over the protection of cows across the country has not rescued the Deoni, an important native breed of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Telangana, from complete neglect. Favoured by farmers for its resilience, disease resistance and docility, centres set up for the research and development of the Deoni are now closed or on the verge of closure. A farm r un by the Telangana State Animal Husbandry Department (TSAHD) for the propagation of the Deoni at Zaheerabad was shut down early in 2017, with the 46 pure-bred Deoni cattle at this facility given away to nearby goshalas. And yet, TSAHD has not applied for grants under the incumbent National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government’s Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM), or any other scheme, for protecting indigenous breeds such as the Deoni. In fact, local officers do not appear keen to preserve the breed. A similar farm managed by the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (CVAS) in Udgir, Maharashtra, has been downgraded to a cattle shelter for want of qualified staff.
Bengaluru, AUG 5 (AGENCIES): The 44 Congress MLAs from Gujarat, shifted to Bengaluru to avoid break in ranks ahead of Rajya Sabha elections, visited the Raj Bhavan on Saturday and met Karnataka governor Vajubhai Vala, who hails from their state. The legislators, who have been confined in a resort near the state capital to ensure the RS re-election of senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel from Gujarat, told Vala about the BJP’s alleged attempts to lure them with bribes of Rs 15 crore, said Shaktisinh Gohil, spokesperson of the party. On why they met Vala, a former BJP leader and Gujarat assembly speaker, Gohil said “the governor is above party politics, and is a protector of the Constitution”. After Raj Bhavan, the MLAs visited the assembly here, in the company of state
energy minister D K Shivakumar, hours after income tax raids at his residence came to an end. The legislators held a protest in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue there against the raids on Shivakumar’s properties, calling it a BJP ploy to threaten them. “There have been many attempts to spread false information,” Gohil said. “Some news organisations have said that the MLAs are being kept at the resort against their will, that some have expressed a desire to leave. But there is no such thing,” Gohil said. The legislator said the MLAs had come to state with the only aim of protecting democracy. “The BJP wants to spread an atmosphere of fear,” he added. Earlier in the day, Shivakumar, who came out of his house after the four-day long raid, thanked party

Chandigarh, AUG 5 (AGENCIES): After Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi, Punjab has also witnessed braid-chopping incidents, with women claiming that their hair had been cut off under “mysterious circumstances“. A 23-year-old married woman, identified as Meena Rani, resident of Chandu village in Sangrur district, claimed that when she woke up last night to relieve herself, she found that her braid had been chopped off, police said. “Rani said when she
“The farm has only about 50 Deoni animals. No scientific breeding or propagation activity is undertaken by it. We are only conducting studies on subjects such as the effect of different types of grass on Deoni calves,” said a senior faculty member of the CVAS, who did not want to be quoted. “A shortage of funding is one of the reasons behind this,” he added. Emails sent to the officials concerned in the governments of Telangana and Maharashtra received no response. The email to the Chief Secretary of Telangana was forwarded to the TSAHD, but there has been clarification or further information. Meanwhile, in Karnataka, the State government
is now the beneficiary of an RGM grant, with which it is setting up a Deoni R&D centre in Ballari’s Kurikuppe, where a farm for other breeds of cows and buffaloes already exists, far from the Deoni’s native tract of the Manjra river basin in the Deccan. This happens even as the R&D centre dedicated to the Deoni near Bhalki in the Bidar district, which was started 30 years ago by the State-aided Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU), is starved of funds. Only about Rs.16 lakh is provided for the annual maintenance of the 120 head of Deoni cattle, both adults and calves, raised in the Bidar farm.

apologised on behalf of his “uneducated” mother, saying she was unaware about whose jurisdiction the I-T department came under. “I would like to tender my apology to the chief minister and the people of the state for the remarks made by my mother,” Shivakumar’s letter says. “Some media organisations used my mother’s innocence to make her say these things,” he alleged. Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah criticised the BJP over the raids, saying they were politically motivated. “The Central Reserve Police Force being used for raids at the house of our cabinet minister is against the Constitution.

Enabling to enable
D
imapur is the gateway to Nagaland and also Manipur and therefore, is strategically placed to play a vital role in the economic development of Kohima and Imphal. Before enabling others, Dimapur must itself be enabled. With nearly a lakh people including scores of floating population, Dimapur and its suburban areas have unfortunately lost the momentum for progress. Due to various problems, the commercial hub of Nagaland has lost the momentum for growth. There are several basic amenities which are still woefully lacking such as power, water, drainage, well maintained roads and disposal of garbage. One needs only to look at the present trends to draw conclusions about where the city’s future would end. The increasing population has over extended the limited amenities besides resulting in haphazard growth that is slowly crippling Dimapur to a position where it can no longer improve but only deteriorate particularly in health environment. As mentioned in this column since past decades, there are several factors that are contributing to the stunted growth of the economy. There a sub-culture in Dimapur town/city which has complicated the problem of promoting progressive economic growth to the commercial capital of the state which has fallen on bad times since the beginning of the 90s. Other factors that also play a role in promoting this sub-culture include economic disparity or inequalities in resources, opportunities, power and access to social status that has created a sense of frustration and alienation; there could be any other number of reasons. Even today, problems such as extortion, intimidation, syndicate raj, the ubiquitous toll tax collection points strewn across Dimapur hinder free trade. Right from the time a truck enters Dimapur, the driver is besotted with scores of predators demanding ‘tax’ or “membership fees”. Prices are shooting up since there is no proper check on the market and even here, the tax collections abound on various items by various self appointed authorities etc. Various tribal organisations, need to serious ponder over this issue and contemplate effective response to crimes committed by their fellow members. This indicates that Dimapur city has failed to keep up with the demands of the growing population and also the need to keep its economic wheels moving. As mentioned above, the various infrastructure have to be vastly improved and expanded to cater to the growing needs of a growing metropolitan city. Another very critical issue is improvement of air and rail communication facilities. It is very dismaying that the government of Nagaland has not shown the political will to do justice to passengers travelling by air or train at Dimapur. When the state government waxes eloquent about promoting tourist trade and showcasing showpieces, it does not fit if Dimapur continues to be getting raw deal from the airline and railways. The direct flight to Delhi by Indigo has been withdrawn and passengers have to spend several hours at Kolkata enroute Delhi. Though Dimapur is the second highest revenue earner for the NFR; yet there is not a single of the over 40 long distance trains from Dimapur. Even Jan Shatabdi meant for Dimapur has been extended to Mariani. It makes business and economic sense to invest in infrastructures and accord importance to connectivity in order to promote growth and in turn expand revenue collection.
DailyDevotion The Bewildering Call of God “…and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished.”…But they understood none of these things… —Luke 18:31, 34 God called Jesus Christ to what seemed absolute disaster. And Jesus Christ called His disciples to see Him put to death, leading every one of them to the place where their hearts were broken. His life was an absolute failure from every standpoint except God’s. But what seemed to be failure from man’s standpoint was a triumph from God’s standpoint, because God’s purpose is never the same as man’s purpose. This bewildering call of God comes into our lives as well. The call of God can never be understood absolutely or explained externally; it is a call that can only be perceived and understood internally by our true inner-nature. The call of God is like the call of the sea— no one hears it except the person who has the nature of the sea in him. What God calls us to cannot be definitely stated, because His call is simply to be His friend to accomplish His own purposes. Our real test is in truly believing that God knows what He desires. The things that happen do not happen by chance— they happen entirely by the decree of God. God is sovereignly working out His own purposes. If we are in fellowship and oneness with God and recognize that He is taking us into His purposes, then we will no longer strive to find out what His purposes are. As we grow in the Christian life, it becomes simpler to us, because we are less inclined to say, “I wonder why God allowed this or that?” And we begin to see that the compelling purpose of God lies behind everything in life, and that God is divinely shaping us into oneness with that purpose. A Christian is someone who trusts in the knowledge and the wisdom of God, not in his own abilities. If we have a purpose of our own, it destroys the simplicity and the calm, relaxed pace which should be characteristic of the children of God.

Post-mortem
Nagaland - which way? T T his document carries the sentiment and conviction of Nagaland as a land of biblical faith and Christians. Signing the document on behalf of Naga Christian public and concerned church leaders, we appeal to one and all, specially our leaders and legislators to refrain from any political and secular influence subtly enshrined and embedded by a religious fanaticism and fundamentalism under the pretext of any political platform. Biblical foundation of Nagaland From time immemorial, the Nagas are casteless, nonidolatrous, and adherents of original religion which is Animism. But at our own volition, we accepted biblical faith some 145 years ago knowing that it is not a foreign religion but that was what we waited for spiritual reason. Let the world know that no Naga became an adherent of other religions except Christian faith.Hence, knowing the truth and value of our belief in God, Nagaland predominantly and openly became a land of Christians. In process of our allegiance to biblical faith, the Nagas dedicated our land to the Lord Jesus Christ in our history as Nagaland Baptist Church Council which is the apex body of all tribal churches. As the Lord Jesus Christ has been good to the Nagas and our land, the Nagas will ever remain faithful to Him under any circumstance, be political, social or religious.

he long awaited monsoon brings with it precious water making the green valleys and the hills verdant, but also pouring threatening wrecks, particularly in the northeast region of the country. This is what I experienced some weeks ago. I quite don’t know what it was: a dull spirit of adventure, necessity of shinrin-yoku (forest bathing), professional loyalty, call of home, or a noble cause, but I realised that I had picked the most ominous season to travel home; Nagaland being home. The rains have been torrential and threatening, discomfort and destruction ensured to the maximum. The flight from Kolkota to Dimapur almost did not make it, the report of rains flooding the runway at Dimapur airport discouraged the scheduled flight to take off from Kolkota. Five hours late from the scheduled time, after fervent plead-
And, in the name of God, we vow to defend and promote the faith of our fathers which is Christian faith in Christ. And we further vow to ward off any fanatical fundamentalism that comes and tends to destroy or thwart the heritage of our faith through any secular ideology or political platform. We appeal to general public and leaders, specially, legislators who are members of their respective churches and were elected by much prayer of Christians to distinguish the difference and refrain from socioreligious deception and enticement, and remain steadfast and unmoved in their Christian faith in their political journey. Loss of wealth is loss of nothing because we can regain it. But loss of our relationship with God, the Creator, is loss of everything because it is a matter of eternal life and death. Therefore, hereafter, we vow to stand firm and that ‘We will not sacrifice our land and biblicalfoundation at the altar of a non-biblical ideology orfanatical fundamentalismina wave of political election and option.’ Nagaland Clean Election The result of undemocratic exercise of Election is the root of corruption and social evils. Based on evaluation of manner of past elections and biblical principle, the NBCC is engineering and exploring a cleaner and healthier way of electing our leaders to manage public affairs. As Christians, we must
elect our leaders of principle in a worthy manner with sanctity and integrity that would bring glory to God and promote the health of our bodies and souls, and society. And hence, the public of Nagaland is expected to appreciate and follow the guidelines and directives outlined by the NBCC. Sale and purchase of votes is spiritually a crime since it is an act against your birthright which is given by God. And the exercise of such mal-practice is a crucifixion to holistic development of our land. The time has come for the public to wake up and rise above unhealthy schemes such as manipulation and corruption that damaged our past image. Let us hold unto positive and redemptive ways that would bring a new and better calibration to one and all. Sale and purchase of votes means your future is already consigned for a dispatch. Clean Election is a possible victory. The Bible tells us ‘Many are the plans in man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevail’ (Proverbs 19:21), ‘Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord’ (Psalms 33:12). God bless Nagaland! Illegal parliamentary secretaries and equally illegal advisors he Supreme Court passed judgement on the unconstitutional Parliamentary Secretaries, which definitely includes the Advisors, quite some time back, based on which the Congress party petitioned the Governor to fix the problem. The silence of the Constitutional Head of the state is deafening. If the Governor had already directed the Chief Minister to remove the illegal appointees, of which I have absolutely no idea, then it appears the Government cares two hoots for the Governor’s orders. If not, then there is something seriously wrong with both the Governor and this Ministry. With all the illegal drama happening around recently, and a certain bunch trying to fool the public that they are the legal Government, who are, in fact responsible for all the misery of the people of Nagaland, the state of health of our state in all aspects, is in tatters. Everybody in this tiny state of ours knows what is wrong and who the culprits are. The Government of the day, no matter how legal or illegal does have some very self-important people running around in illegal uniforms. We sometimes wonder if these so-called Parliamentary Secretaries/Advisors can read. If they actually do, they really are desperately clinging on to their illegal Parliamentary Secretary/ Advisor chairs? But, are they not responsible for everything else illegal in our state, including looting of all development funds,
Travel travails in the monsoon
ings and prayers, the flight took off from Kolkota, literally, on a wing and a prayer, that the rain gods would not resume their dance before the flight landed in Dimapur. The particular airline deserves kudos for the professionalism and commitment to get the passengers to their destination. I dread to think of the possible scenarios if it was the other notorious one! Anyway, 14 hours since leaving for home, I was in home soil, pleased to reach halfway of the travel in one day’s time. Another day’s worth of uphill travel remaining before reaching the destination. The word ‘uphill’ here describes both the topography and the state of the travel. As I sat at the Netaji Subash Chandra Bose Inter national Air port, Kolkota, watching people, involuntary eavesdropping on conversations of strangers (why are the decibels always higher in our part of the world?), minutes
turning to hours, anxious and irritated with the uncertainty of the scheduled flight and consequently the possible havoc to the travel itinerary, my thoughts went to memories of reading fascinating account of express train from Beijing to Lhasa as filed by Pallavi Aiyar in the national paper The Hindu almost a decade ago. The burden of being stranded halfway also took my wondering thoughts to another report of a swanky, clean and fast train between Beijing and Shanghai, reported by a journalist in the same national daily, who had travelled there, and was musing over his experience in comparison to the train he and his wife took upon return. The comparison is best in his own words, “[m]y wife and I travelled from Beijing to Shanghai by a high-speed train days after it was introduced two years ago. A week later, on our return jour-
ney from a holiday in the ‘Land of Dragons and Emperors,’ we took the Ernakulam-Coimbatore Inter-City Express. Both journeys were completed under five hours. The distance between Beijing and Shanghai is 1,318 km and between Ernakulam and Coimbatore: 178 km.” http://www.thehindu. com/opinion/open-page/ W hy - a r e - we - o n - s l ow track/article12377368. ece Arriving in Dimapur and the ride from the airport into town was another sight and experience. The next day travel in the famous sumo that serves the citizens of Nagaland as the basic mode of connectivity between towns and villages was unbearably memorable. Beginning with the squalor and the stench of the sumo stand and the rocking ride up the mountain terrains on roads probably from the British days, was a journey that was disturbing to one’s moral
compass and dislocating to the fragile bones. The muck and muddy dirt from the overflowing drainage made all the senses shrivel and the stench lingered on. The contrasting sight that cannot be missed were the dainty young people, dyed blond and brunette, attired rather unseasonal. Rubber boots would have been more weather friendly rather than delicate ballerinas and adidas sneakers. The point is not about rubber boots or gumboots, or willies as they are also called, derived from Wellingtons, it is rather the state of our home. The rain reveals the deepest nadir that we can take ourselves to. The conditions of the roads and the connectivity tell a thousand story of neglect, corruption, ethical compass, mismanagement, indifference, powerlessness, resignation, and even religious hypocrisy. A disturbing thought was the realisation that the people seem to have
Massive earth-sized storm spotted on Neptune
A
stronomers have observed a gigantic storm system about the size of Earth near Neptune’s equator, a region where no bright cloud has ever been seen before. The massive storm system is about 9,000 kilometres in length, or one-third the size of Neptune’s radius, spanning at least 30 degrees in both latitude and longitude. Ned Molter from University of California, Berkeley in the US observed the storm getting much brighter between June 26 and July 2. “Seeing a storm this bright at such a low latitude is extremely surprising,” said Molter, who spotted the storm near Neptune’s equator during a dawn test run of twilight observing at W M Keck Observatory on Maunakea, Hawaii. “Normally, this area is really quiet and we only see bright clouds in the mid-latitude bands, so to have such an enormous cloud sitting right at the equator is spectacular,” said Molter. “Historically, very bright clouds have occasionally been seen on Neptune, but usually
at latitudes closer to the poles, around 15 to 60 degrees north or south,” said Imke de Pater, a professor at UC Berkeley. “Never before has a cloud been seen at or so close to the equator, nor has one ever been this bright,” said de Pater. At first, de Pater thought it was the same Northern Cloud Complex seen by the Hubble Space Telescope in 1994, after the iconic Great Dark Spot, imaged by Voyager 2 in 1989, had disappeared. However, de Pater said measurements of its locale do not match, signalling that this cloud complex is different from the one Hubble first saw more than two decades ago. A huge, high-pressure, dark vortex system anchored deep in Neptune’s atmosphere may be what is causing the colossal cloud cover, said de Pater. As gases rise up in a vortex, they cool down. When its temperature drops below the condensation temperature of a condensable gas, that gas condenses out and forms clouds, just like water on Earth. On Neptune, however, methane
clouds form. As with every planet, winds in Neptune’s atmosphere vary drastically with latitude, so if there is a big bright cloud system that spans many latitudes, something must hold it together, such as a dark vortex. Otherwise, the clouds would shear apart, researchers said. “This big vortex is sitting in a region where the air, overall, is subsiding rather than rising. A long-lasting vortex right at the equator would be hard to explain physically,” said de Pater. If it is not tied to a vortex, the system may be a huge convective cloud, similar to those seen occasionally on other planets, like the huge storm on Saturn that was detected in 2010. However, such a cloud would be expected to smear out considerably over a week’s time, researchers said. “This shows that there are extremely drastic changes in the dynamics of Neptune’s atmosphere, and perhaps this is a seasonal weather event that may happen every few decades or so,” said de Pater. besides so many other crimes against the people? The person who coined the term ‘Crimes against Humanity’ in all probability had people like most of our leaders (a notorious lot who were elected by the gun, booth capture, buying of votes, various forms of deceit, etc.) in mind. We are really not surprised as most of the illegal happenings and misery in our sick state are due to them. We can only cry in pain and hang our heads in shame for someone else’s vanity and crimes. I agree with Mr. Thepfülhouvi Solo that it is time we threw out the older conniving lot and give chance to the young first and second timers and bring in a whole lot of fresh faces to salvage whatever is left of Nagaland. As the Supreme Court’s judgement covers all states of the Union of India, this is, perhaps a case of contempt of court by the Government of Nagaland? Is the Governor, though in Arunachal but can feel the pulse of Nagaland, equally guilty? By the way, it was really refreshing to note that all the evil together could not knock out Dr. Shurhozelie (nothing for or against him), unlike what happened some years ago to another really tall leader. Kudos to the Clean Election Campaign (CEC) and particularly, the People of the Constituency! Hats off to Mr. Kekhrie Yhome too! He could have taken advantage of the situation but ensured the CEC prevail. We salute all of you. Prof. G.T. Thong
accepted to live in such conditions of wretchedness. No questions asked, no actions initiated, no demands made, perhaps the burden of daily survival outweighs the right to quality of life. My thoughts returned to the comparison made between China and India about speed of trains by the Indian journalists. Recalling these news reports and other recent developments of ASEAN economy just across the border in Myanmar ignite an ambiguous feeling – not exactly schadenfreude – because there is no misfortune of anyone for someone’s joy; yet there might be reasons for hope in the fast growing and far reaching ASEAN economy. Complex as it is, globalization and easy movement of goods might still lead the way to the urgent need of supervised, accounted and visible developments the regions in the Northeast – such as Nagaland need. Reader’s Post ‘Action speak louder than words’ Sir,
It is our common experience to hear politician make tall promises before elections, and to conveniently forget them after they are elected. Their actions do not match their words. That is why we do not trust them. Words sound so good and sweet. But actions prove the true color of one intention. Gone are the days of olden times where a man’s word was a matter of honor, even unto the point of death. But in today’s times, people make all kinds of big promises which they have little intention of keeping. People like to say nice things to give a good impression. But once they come to power they forget everything what they have claimed to do. Yes, people I am talking about our Naga politicians and leaders. As we are aware and have seen our present political scenario which is very complicated and confusing the entire people. Let this be an eye-opener to our people and let’s elect our leaders wisely in which our future lies upon them. None of the changes happened overnight. It actually happened over the course of years of advocacy, deal-making etc. We need some charismatic leaders who can take towards the next level of change and development in our state for which we are longing for. Last but not the least, we should develop the habit of matching our action with words with all times. Henveih E Phom, Lonleng town

Future of NPF no more in Nagaland: Therie (From p-1) “They fear the CBI and the NIA. The day they part ways from BJP, all the MLAs will be prosecuted”, he said. NPCC president said that till today, no extra assistance has been awarded to Nagaland after BJP came to power despite NPF patronising BJP. Therie recalled that though BJP lost both in Manipur and Goa, yet it formed the governments through the office of the Governor . He said misuse of the office of the Governor was exhibited
in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland and other states. He concluded that given opportunity, the Congress would deliver the programs and policies contained in the Roadmap, some of which he highlighted. All India Seva Dal national organizing secretary, N. Neilo Koza, in his address, said that atrocities towards Christians and minorities in India have increased after BJP came to power at the centre. He said that RSS was running the government by
proxy at the centre and in Nagaland through the proxy of the NPF party. He also stated that NPF has been reduced to a divided house, adding that NGOs and public were crying for change. “Together we will change the future and Congress will form the next government,” Koza said. Short speeches were also delivered by DCC Phek president, Mikha Kenye and NPCC secretary, Kedou Wetsah. Meanwhile, the meeting adopted five-point resolution.
Digvijaya requests to be freed Court refuses to stall proceedings from all party responsibilities in Arun Jaitley’s defamation case
NEW DELHI, AUG 5 (AGENCIES): AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh has formally requested Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her deputy Rahul Gandhi “to relieve him of all party responsibilities”, according to party insiders. His request to the Gandhis, it is learnt, was made around the time when he firmed up his mind to embark on a sixmonth, 3,300 km ‘spiritual padayatra’ from September 30 as part of the Narmada Parikrama, an annual pilgrimage in Madhya Pradesh and parts of Gujarat. Party insiders added he cited his “imminent preoccupation” with his “padayatra” as the reason to the Gandhis for wanting to be divested of his responsibilities. When ET contacted Singh for confirmation, he merely acknowledged having made such a request to the Gandhis but refused to comment further. If the Congress president had relieved Singh of his responsibilities as AICC in-charge of Karnataka and Goa by April end, he was also freed of his Telangana charge a couple of days ago.
Sources said Singh wanted to be similarly divested of his charge of Andhra too. A two-term CM of Madhya Pradesh, Singh is also a member of the Congress Working Committee besides being part of many important national panels. ET had in its July 18 edition reported that Singh had disclosed to it about his Narmada Parikrama plan, “as advised by my Guru”, while stressing it would be a strictly a “nonpolitical” and “completely religious and spiritual” endeavour which he had wanted to undertake since 1997 but could not as he was preoccupied with political engagements.

to seek higher damages. Kejriwal, however, denied instructing Jethmalani of using such objectionable words. Kejriwal’s counsel on Saturday requested the court to adjourn the hearing as Kejriwal needs sufficient time to engage or brief a senior counsel. The plea was opposed by Jaitley’s counsel Siddharth Luthra who said that plea is without merit as well as not maintainable and the accused are trying to delay
the trial by moving such frivolous applications. The court refused to stall the proceedings and asked Jaitley to record his statement as complainant witness in the case. However, it granted exemption to Kejriwal from personal appearance. Jaitley, while recording his statement, said that the defamatory statement made by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders has adversely affected his reputation and the allegation regarding financial bungling in the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) was false. He told court that statement made by accused that he and his family had a pecuniary interest in the company who had given charge for the construction and renovation of Ferozshah Kotla stadium was per se false and defamatory.

Chandigarh, Aug 5 (IANS): The Punjab Police’s Special Task Force (STF) on Saturday arrested five state police personnel and three private persons who have snatched 300 gm heroin and extorted Rs 8 lakh from a drug trafficker by impersonating an STF unit. MUMBAI, Aug 5 (PTI): The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has mandated listed companies to inform stock exchanges if they default on interest or loan repayments to banks and financial institutions. The disclosure has to be made within one working day of the default, the regulator said on Friday. Sebi rules currently require the disclosure of material events and information by listed entities to stock exchanges. Companies have to make specific disclosures in instances such as delays and defaults in the payment of interest and principal on debt securities, listed nonconvertible debentures, redeemable preference shares and foreign currency convertible bonds. “Similar disclosures are presently not stipulated with respect to loans from banks and financial institutions,” Sebi said.
plied to be a GSP to keep more control over filings to get more sellers on board by offering tax solutions, ET had reported in May. However, it was found ineligible due to financials, as per the GSTN website. The GSTN had relaxed eligibility criteria the second time around and lowered paid-up capital and turnover requirements to encourage startups to apply. Some of the startups that did make the cut include Paynear and Eko India Financial Services. As many as 160 companies applied to be GSPs in the second phase. HDFC Bank, which owns a stake in GSTN, will be the first bank to become a GSP if it successfully completes the final demo. While the Union and state governments together own 49 per cent equity in the GSTN, which is listed as a not-for-profit, private company, the rest is held by private financial institutions.

NEW DELHI, Aug 5 (PTI): Within days of SBI slashing interest rate on savings bank account, another PSU bank - Bank of Baroda - has followed suit, cutting it to 3.5 per cent on deposits of up to Rs. 50 lakh. “We wish to inform you that it has been decided to introduce a 2-tier savings bank interest rate (from) August 5...,” the bank said in a regulatory filing. Effective from Saturday, the interest rate on savings bank balance of up to Rs. 50 lakh has been reduced to 3.5 per cent from the current annual 4 per cent. However, for balance above of Rs. 50 lakh, the bank has retained the rate at 4%. On July 31, the country’s largest lender State Bank of India had slashed interest rate on savings account deposits by 50 basis points to 3.5% on balance of Rs.1 crore and below. However, SBI continues to offer 4% interest on savings account balance of Rs. 1 crore and above.

The company said in a statement that “it was essential to focus our efforts on the ongoing GST project that we are working on and hence decided to withdraw the application”. The 69 shortlisted companies will now make presentations of their solutions to the GSTN, which will then make a final list. In the first batch as well, the GSTN had announced a shortlist of 48 companies before finalising 34 GSPs. In the first phase, it shortlisted 34 companies including EY, Deloitte, Tata Consultancy and Reliance Corporate IT Park to become GSPs. BENGALURU, Aug 5 (Agencies): The GST Network, the nodal agency in charge of the technological infrastructure for the new goods and services tax regime, has shortlisted 69 more companies to become GST Suvidha Providers to facilitate more channels to route invoices under the GST to the central database. These include HDFC Bank, Zoho Corporation and two of the remaining Big Four consulting companies - PwC and KPMG. The agency had earlier shortlisted 34 GSPs. The second list does not include Flipkart and several startups such as ClearTax, LegalRaasta and Moglix, which had applied to be GSPs. Infosys Limited withdrew its application to be a GSP after applying in the second batch in May. The company probably withdrew due to concerns raised over conflict of interest, since it is also building the GSTN platform, according

On the Baa3 rating rationale, Moody’s said the bank’s foreign currency senior unsecured MTN debt rating is anchored on its Ba3 baseline credit assessment and the agency’s assessment of the likelihood of a very high level of government support in a stressed situation. Canara’s BCA of Ba3 is underpinned by its weak asset quality though its gross NPA ratio is somewhat better than domestic peers, it’s significantly weaker compared to Ba3 global peers, with a trend of increasing bad loans. Similarly, the bank’s provisioning levels and capital buffers are lower compared with similarly rated peers. Once enrolled for Aadhaar, the beneficiary can apply for free LPG connection by providing the enrolment ID slip or a copy of such a request. Such application will have to be accompanied by one of the government identification documents like bank passbook with photograph, election voter ID, ration card, permanent account number (PAN), passport, driving licence, kisan photo passbook or a certificate of identity having a photo issued by a gazetted officer on an official letterhead, it said.
Mumbai, Aug 5 (PTI): State-run Canara Bank is in the international bond market with a USD 400million issue as part of its USD 2-billion medium term note programme. “Canara Bank is in the international debt market with a benchmark dollar bond issue that will have a tenor of 5 years. The lender is likely to raise USD 400 million through the bond sale issue, which will be drawn through its London branch and will be listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange,” merchant banking sources told PTI. The Bangalore-based bank has hit the forex debt market after a long gap. Foregin rating agency Moody’s has assigned a Baa3 rating to the issue, which is on par with the sovereign rating since the bank is majority owned by the government. Moody’s in a note said the proposed senior unsecured notes, is being issued under its USD 2 billion medium-term note programme.

briefed reporters on the content of the draft, said he had “high confidence” that China and Russia would support the proposed sanctions. Backed by its European allies, Japan and South Korea, the United States has been leading the push at the United Nations for tougher sanctions in response to North Korea’s launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile on July 4. A second test on July 28 further raised alarm about Pyongyang’s drive to develop a missile capable of hitting the US mainland. The draft text would also prevent North Korea from increasing the number of workers it sends abroad,
prohibit all new joint ventures and ban new investment in the current joint companies. North Korea is blamed for a “massive diversion of its scarce resources” toward the development of “nuclear weapons and a number of expensive ballistic missile programs,” the draft resolution said. The new raft of measures would be the seventh set of UN sanctions imposed on North Korea since it first carried out a nuclear test in 2006, but these have failed to compel Pyongyang to change its behaviour. Two resolutions adopted last year however have introduced economic sanctions with more bite.

KABUL, AUG 5 (IANS): At least 50 Taliban militants were killed and three wounded in an airstrike on a militants’ hideout in Afghanistan’s Khost province, a local official said on Saturday. “The strike was conducted in a remote locality in Piri area of Musa Khil district late on Friday evening,” District Chief Gulab Mangal told Xinhua news agency. Mangal said the airstrike was conducted by the US-led coalition war planes in the province, 150 km southeast of Kabul. A Taliban hideout, together with weapons and ammunition, was also destroyed in the attack. Earlier on Saturday, the Afghan Defence Ministry also confirmed in a statement the elimination of 50 militants in Khost, but did not give details. The Afghan forces have beefed up security operations as the Taliban and Islamic State militants have been attempting to take territory and consolidate their positions across the country.

Another leader, Caracas mayor Antonio Ledezma, was released back into home detention on Friday after being hauled away the same day as Lopez. Maduro has rejected the criticism lobbed at him, saying the revised constitution issued by the Constituent Assembly would be put to a referendum. He also accused the United States of “imperialism” after it hit him with direct sanctions and threatened to do the same with all of the assembly’s members. And he lashed out at fellow Latin American leaders for being vassals of America. Rodriguez on Friday said: “The international community should not make a mistake over Venezuela. The message is clear, very clear: we Venezuelans will resolve our conflict, our crisis without any form of foreign interference.”

C A R AC A S, AU G 5 (AGENCIES): A new assembly packed with allies of unpopular President Nicolas Maduro and with sweeping powers was to begin work on Saturday, deepening divisions in a crisis-wracked Venezuela, reports AFP. The Constituent Assembly, headed by a former foreign minister, Delcy Rodriguez, is tasked with rewriting the 1999 constitution into a charter Maduro has promised will end the turmoil rocking his impoverished yet oil-rich nation. On Friday, the body took over an ornate chamber under a golden dome in the Legislative Palace in Caracas -- at the far end of a building shared with the opposition-run legislature, the National Assembly. Elected a week ago amid bloody protests and international objections, the Constituent Assembly has powers to override every branch of government, and can dissolve the legislature. Its detractors say the 545 loyalist members -among them the president’s wife and son -- amount to a rubber-stamp entity extending Maduro’s “dictator”-like

ink Floyd’s Waters says his new album was inspired by antipathy towards US President. Pink Floyd‘s Roger Waters has hit back at critics of his ‘Us + Them’ tour, which features anti-Trump imagery. Doctored images of the president were shown in bright, Warhol-like colors depicting him with lipstick, with breasts, with a Klan hood, without pants (showing a tiny penis), with his head on a pig and with the word “charade” written over his face. A giant, flying, dronecontrolled pig also flew around a giant screen with the words “welcome to the machine” written on it juxtaposed by an image of Trump with dollar signs over his eyes and a word bubble saying, “I won!”. The other side of the pig simply read: “piggy bank of war.” Waters also showcased some of Trump’s most heinous quotes about his proposed border wall, 9/11, taxes, women and his daughter Ivanka. The imager y has
drawn some criticism – mainly when Waters has played Republican states in America. Speaking to CNN about the critics, Waters said: “I find it slightly surprising that anybody could have been listening to my songs for 50 years without understanding,” When asked what he would say to fans looking to escape politics during his show, Waters replied, “Go see Katy Perry or watch the Kardashians. I don’t care.”

Washington, Aug 5 (Agencies): Second seed Kei Nishikori shrugged off fatigue and
saved three match points before beating unheralded American Tommy Paul 3-6 7-6(8) 6-4 in their ATP Citi

The world number nine seemed destined for an early exit in the fierce Washington heat when 20year-old Paul brought up match point at 5-3 in the second set with a backhand winner down the line. Nishikori survived with an audacious drop shot from the base line that Paul could not run down, however, before staving off two more match points in the tiebreak and taking the second set. That appeared to break the spirit of the 225thranked Paul and Nishikori, who had post-midnight finishes to his previous two

India’s Ravichandran Ashwin celebrates with team mates after taking the wicket of Angelo Mathews.
C o lo m b o, Au g 5 (Agencies): India tightened its grip on the second Test against Sri Lanka despite a fighting century by Kusal Mendis during the hosts’ follow-on in Colombo on Saturday. Mendis put on 191 runs for the second wicket with opener Dimuth Karunaratne (92 not out) before falling to paceman Hardik Pandya for 110 just before stumps on day three. The hosts were 209 for two at close, still trailing India by 230 runs in their second innings. Karunaratne and nightwatchman Malinda Pushpakumara on two were at the crease. Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka nosedived from
their overnight 50-2 to 183 all out, handing the visitors a chance to clinch the three-match series 2-0. The islanders were in early trouble in the second innings when paceman Umesh Yadav got opener Upul Tharanga out for two after lunch on a seemingly deteriorating pitch. The left-right batting combination of Karunaratne and Mendis then dug in their heels to thwart the Indian bowling attack, forcing skipper Virat Kohli to rotate his options. The duo handled the Indian spinners with aplomb, using their feet to good effect as they combined the right dose of caution and aggression. Mendis, who hit his
third Test hundred, played an attacking game as he smashed 17 boundaries before letting go of his hard work with a catch to wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha. The Colombo-born Karunaratne remained patient during his 200ball knock so far as he played out the remaining few overs with debutant Pushpakumara in a tense finish to the day. But it was the first session that hit the hosts hard as they lost eight of their remaining wickets and conceded a 439-run lead in response to India’s formidable 622-9 declared. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who had removed the Sri Lankan
Vijender beats Zulpikar to claim WBO Oriental Super Middleweight title Mumbai, Aug 5 (PTI): The legend of Vijender Singh continued to grow as the Indian boxing star outslugged his Chinese opponent Zulpikar Maimaitiali in a close bout to annex the WBO Asia Pacific Super Middleweight title Saturday night. It was double delight for the fans as Vijender also snatched the WBO Oriental Super Middleweight title from the Chinese, who is nine years younger to him. It was the 32-year-old Beijing Olympic bronze medallist’s ninth successive win in his professional career. Zulpikar got the real taste of Vijender of yore, when he landed a straight right followed by a left uppercut flush on his face as the crowd roared in approval. However, the younger legs of Zulpikar did help him towards the fag end of the bout as the Indian looked tired. Zulpikar took the chance to attack but Vijender’s tight defence, despite jaded legs, helped him. In the final round, Zulpikar landed an uppercut which left the Indian ace with a bloodied nose, but he did manage to hold his own in the end. The bonhomie between the opponents was there to be seen as Zulpikar hugged Vijender and made him wear his cap.

Sri Lanka pacer Nuwan Pradeep was on Saturday ruled out of the ongoing series against India after suffering a hamstring injury in the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club here. According to ESPNCricinfo, Sri Lanka manager Asanka Gurusinha confirmed a grade-one hamstring tear adding that Pradeep will be out of action for a minimum of two weeks. Pradeep was forced to return to the dressing room during the first day of the ongoing second Test on Thursday due to the injury, leaving his 17th over incomplete. Left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara later completed the remaining two balls in the over. Earlier, Sri Lanka lost the services of batting allrounder Asela Gunaratne, who was ruled out of the series after shattering his thumb during the first Test.

The 32-year-old threetime Grand Slam champion was troubled by a left knee problem during a first-round loss to Daniil Medvedev at Wimbledon and pulled out of the upcoming Masters 1000 events in Montreal and Cincinnati earlier this week. Pacquiao wants Horn rematch: Arum Los Angeles, Aug 5 (Agencies): Manny Pacquiao will put retirement plans on hold in order to pursue a rematch with Jeff Horn, according to his promoter Bob Arum. Pa c q u i a o l o s t h i s WBO welterweight title to Horn after a contentious unanimous points loss to the Australian in Brisbane last month. After the WBO upheld the decision following a review of the scoring, a number of observers suggested Pacquiao would retire and focus on his political commitments as a Senator in the Philippines. But Arum told ESPN that Pacquiao is likely to take up his contractual right to a rematch against Horn, indicating a November date in Australia is the most likely option at this stage. “Manny doesn’t want to retire,” Arum said. “He wants the rematch, so we are going to do the rematch. Manny told me he wants to do the rematch, but now we are looking for the window that satisfies the Senate.” “We need to see when they have a recess that will allow Manny the time he needs to train and have the fight.” Arum added, “Once I have an answer from the Senate when they have their recess, I will go to my partner in Australia, Duco [Events], and we will figure out where we’re going to do the fight.”

Kohima, Aug 5 (NPN): The official trophy of Kohima Football League 2017 and jerseys of the eight participating teams was officially launched by retired DGP K. Kire IPS at WTF restaurant, Kohima on Saturday. Addressing the gathering, Kire lauded Kohima Town Club (KTC) for their efforts to conduct the tournament. Recalling the past when he was a footballer himself, Kire said it was in 1963 that the North East tournament was held in Kohima and the neighbouring states were no match to the Nagas. However, due to inability of grooming up clubs in the State, football has lagged behind, he added.
Kire expressed hope that with the launch of Kohima Football League (KFL) a proper system will inspire players to remain registered with club and the quality of football will improve in the State. “It is already too late that such systematic clubs were launched, but it is never too late that a step has been initiated, which is a good beginning,” Kire maintained. He aspired that the day will soon come when Naga footballers will also make their way into the national and international arenas like our neighbouring states are doing. Kire also emphasized on the need to nurture the budding football talents who will be able to represent the state in the future.
The participating teams of the first edition of KFL are United 16 FC Kohima, Forerunners FC Thizama, Khriekesa FC Meriema, Power Comm FC Kohima, New Market FC Kohima, Ziekezuo FC Kohima, Nagabazar Kohima and Addax FC D Khel. Secretary organizing committee Mhasimhalie M a t h ew Y h o m e w h o chaired the programme informed that the tournament would commence from August 9 and would conclude on August 31 at Kohima Local Ground. KTC general secretary Krodi tendered the vote of thanks while Technical Committee Convenor Kevielebei Paphino administered oath to the teams and officials of the tournament.
Irate Bopanna blasts AITA for Arjuna snub NEW DELHI, Aug 5 (PTI): Venting his anger at missing out on the Arjuna award yet again, Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna on Saturday lambasted AITA for not nominating him within the deadline but the Federation said there was no point sending his application since he did not meet the requisite criteria. The deadline to send applications expired on April 28 but the All India Tennis Association (AITA) made up its mind to send his name only on June 14 after he won the French Open mixed doubles title with Canadian partner Gabriela Dabrowski. AITA had chosen Saketh Myneni, winner of two medals at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, for nomination and the awards selection committee stuck to the deadline. In the past, Bopanna has been nominated several times but his application has

always been rejected. “We professional tennis players put in a lot to bring laurels to our country. And no one could question otherwise. However, it is when the system (the Tennis Association in this case) functions sloppily that is not only disrespectful but also robs one of the hope of a deserving acknowledgment,” Bopanna said in a scathing statement. “I am calling out to the lack of professionalism and efficiency by AITA for not
sending my nomination for the Arjuna Award before the deadline. I have witnessed many such excuses for the past decade (while I was eligible and my record didn’t falter) and then too, have never stood for it.” However, the All India Tennis Association (AITA) Secretary General Hironmoy Chatterjee said they had a reason for not sending his application this year. “AITA did not send Rohan Bopanna’s application for Arjuna award this
year since his application was getting rejected all these years because he has not won any medals for the country at the Asian Games,” Chatterjee told PTI from Cambodia, where he reached after attending the International Tennis Federation AGM in Vietnam. “We knew why it was being rejected all the time.” Points are given for winning medals at the World C h a m p i o n s h i p / Wo r l d Cup, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Championships (biennial) and Commonwealth championships (biennial) while evaluating the applications by the committee. The selection committee considered performances between January 2013 and December 2016 and Bopanna has achieved some tremendous results in this period but only on the Pro Circuit, not while representing India in a multidisciplinary events.
