Trump issues warning to N. Korea
WASHINGTON/UNITED NATIONS, AUG 29 (AGENCIES): President Donald Trump said Tuesday that “all options are on the table” in terms of a U.S. response to North Korea’s launch of a missile over Japan, reports AP. In a terse, written statement Tuesday, Trump said that with the missile launch North Korea has “signaled its contempt for its neighbors, for all members of the United Nations, and for minimum standards of acceptable international behavior.” “Threatening and destabilizing actions only increase the North Korean regime’s isolation in the region and among all nations of the world,” Trump said. “All options are on the table.” Trump later told reporters, “We’ll see, we’ll see” when asked what he would do about North Korea. In a first, North Korea on Tuesday fired a midrange ballistic missile designed to carry a nuclear payload that flew over U.S. ally Japan and splashed into the northern Pacific Ocean,

officials said. The aggressive launch over the territory of a close U.S. ally sent a clear message of defiance as Washington and South Korea conduct war games nearby. Trump’s statement implies that military action remains an option in resolving the standoff over North Korea’s development of nuclear weapons that could threaten America. But a U.S. military strike against North Korea is considered highly unlikely. North Korea has the world’s largest standing army and a massive conventional weapons arsenal that can easily target the South Korean capital of Seoul and its metropolitan area of

filiation, or geographical location, to be prepared to wage the moral battle, if the government failed to heed to the people’s demand. “It will require each of us to set aside our differences and stand united as one,” ACAUT added. The collective resolve would ultimately decide which side prevails: “the sane demands of the Naga people or the selfish interest of the most corrupted Naga government in history,” ACAUT said. It also said that since the decisive battle in the ‘War Against Corruption’ is at hand, the process to cement people’s efforts to reclaim Nagaland was already underway. It has appealed to the present generation, particularly those living in towns and districts head quarters, to stand up for the people in the hinterland who would be
counting on them. Further, ACAUT advised the state government “not to test the patience of the people and fool around but to wisely heed to the demands of the people before the deadline expires.” At the end, the people are only demanding their constitutional right to live in dignity, it said. Meanwhile, ACAUT has expressed sincere gratitude to all the organizations and individuals for taking part in the historic rally, as well as the full-hearted adoption of the 7-point public resolution. Being a people’s movement, ACAUT said the rally was held with the sole intention to give platform to different voices and act as a channel to facilitate the voice of the people. ACAUT also said it would always continue to welcome those who stand for Naga solution or are against corruption.
NEW DELHI, AUG 29 (NPN): Politics in Nagaland has come to a crucial stage where the ruling government has 36 out of 47 legislators either expelled or suspended from the NPF by party president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü and also facing the prospects of disqualification proceedings initiated against them for voting against the party whip during the July 21 vote of confidence. To add to the political confusion, the strident demand made by various organisations such as the Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) and also the public resolution at the August 25 ACAUT public rally in Dimapur that the Governor /Government of India remove/terminate all posts deemed as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court (as

No report of influenza A H1N1 virus in Nagaland: H&FW deptt Correspondent
KO H I M A , AU G 2 9 (NPN): State Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) department on Tuesday denied the purported detection of influenza A H1N1 virus in the state, saying there was no such report of the virus becoming endemic in the state. Influenza – A (H1N1), earlier know as swine flu, was first detected in Mexico in April, 2009 Speaking to the media here Tuesday afternoon, Dr. John Kemp of the Integrated Disease Surveillance Project (IDSP) H&FW, informed that one of the patients admitted to a hospital in Dimapur last week was shifted to a hospital in Guwahati (GNRC) from where she was tested positive of the H1F1 virus. Dr. Kemp said that since the matter was reported from outside the state, there were no threat in Nagaland and asked the public not be alarmed with such reports. He stated that Influenza A H1N1 virus was no longer a new virus but
considered as a common flu, which was seasonal and self-limiting. Dr. Kemp said that while most swine flu cases would be mild, persons with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, heart diseases, cancer and other immune-compromised conditions, adults over 65 years of age, children under 5 years and pregnant women were at higher risk for acquiring severe illness. Referring to a health advisory issued by the H&FW department, Dr. Kemp said mortality due to Influenza A H1N1 among the said high risk groups could also be prevented by early diagnosis and prompt treatment. Maintaining that the state was so far free of the virus, Dr. Kemp, however, said that any suspicious symptoms/cases should be reported to the nearest identified health facility for confirmation and treatment. The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular seasonal flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, head-
ache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with influenza-A (H1N1) Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through droplets created while coughing or sneezing by a person infected with the influenza-A (H1N1). According to sources, the person from Nagaland was suspecetd to have been infected with H1N1 virus, was being treated in Guwahati. Meanwhile, the H1N1 virus has claimed over 1,000 lives so far this year, which is four times more than deaths recorded last year, with a total of 22,186 cases reported across the country till now, data from the Union health ministry revealed. Like other strains of the flu, H1N1 is highly contagious, and spreads quickly from person to person. It was declared a pandemic in 2009 by the World Health Organisation. It has been found that this new virus has gene segments from the swine, avian and human flu virus genes.
ACAUT demands implementation Nagaland’s complex and confusing politics of Aug 25 public rally resolution
D I M A P U R , AU G 2 9 (NPN): ACAUT has appealed to the state and central government to implement the historic 7-point resolution adopted during the mass public rally on August 25 at Dimapur. If sincerely implemented, the state can transform into an oasis of peace, development and prosperity, ACAUT said. ACAUT particularly appealed to the state government to institute the Nagaland Lokayukta and terminate all backdoor appointees which were done in total violation of High Court order. However, ACAUT said “in case the state government refuses to do so, it should be prepared for full-blown state-wide agitation.” Therefore, ACAUT D I M A P U R , AU G 2 9 has called upon every Naga(NPN): As part of the Na- irrespective of clan, tribe, galand Emergency Prepared- denomination, political afness Exercise (NEPEx), the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) would conduct a mega mock exercise all over the state on Wednesday. about 25 million people. Tr ump and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan conferred by telephone over the latest missile test. The White House said the leaders agreed that North Korea poses “a grave and growing direct threat” to the United States, Japan, South Korea and countries around the world. “President Trump and Prime Minister Abe committed to increasing pressure on North Korea, and doing their utmost to convince the international community to do the same,” the White House said. Abe said in a statement that “Japan’s and the U.S. positions are totally at one.”
Washington’s UN ambassador Nikki Haley said today that “something serious has to happen” following North Korea’s missile test over Japan. “It’s unacceptable,” Haley said. “They have violated every single UN Security Council resolution that we’ve had, and so I think something serious has to happen,” she added, giving no specifics. Washington and Tokyo called for an emergency UN Security Council meeting, set to convene at 2100 GMT to discuss the crisis. The United States, along with Japan had called for an emergency security council meeting this afternoon. “We are going to talk about what else is left to do,” Haley continued, saying that “no country” should have missiles flying over a nation of 130 million people like Japan. “I think we have a lot to talk about today. So with all of our partners, what we hope is that China and Russia continues to work with us, like they have in the past on North Korea -- but I think enough is enough,” Haley declared.

schools has been on a rise leading to “hollowing” of state-run schools. High rate of teacher absenteeism, limited time spent on teaching when the teacher is in class and generally poor quality of education are among important reasons for this emptying out. Outcomes are worse in government schools than in private schools, it said. “A working group should be set up with states participation to explore and pilot other bolder experiments by interested states. These could include education vouchers and local government led purchasing of schooling services. “PPP models could also be explored where the private sector adopts government schools while being publicly funded on a per child basis. This may provide a solution to the problems of schools that have
hollowed and are incurring massive expenditures,” the Niti Aayog recommended. During 2010-2014, public schools increased by around 13,500 in number but total enrolment in them fell by 1.13 crore. In parallel, private school enrolment rose by 1.85 crore. This shift has been accompanied by hollowing of an alarmingly large number of public schools, the report said. As per statistics cited in the report, there were about 3.7 lakh state-run schools with less than 50 students in 2014 -15, which is around 36 per cent of total number of public schools. The report also highlighted that even though there is a manifold increase in the government spending on public schools, results are very disappointing. “There are about 1 lakh such schools which have less than 20 students en-
rolled in it and the government spending on every teacher’s salary is Rs 9,440. The government is spending Rs 80,000 every year on every single child in such schools,” the report said. Suggesting corrective measures to improve deteriorating education system, the think tank said, “The government must focus on school leadership, administrative tenure, basic monitoring by administrators to resolve school level issues such as teacher absenteeism, and transparency in teacher appointments and postings.” “In terms of regulation, states should regulate only based on outcomes and transparency requirements, not through regulating inputs like library, fees and playground. Both private and government schools should be regulated in the same way,” the Aayog stated.
per its July 26, 2017 judgment). The posts include 26 legislators appointed as parliamentary secretaries (status of ministers of state) and nine advisers (status of cabinet ministers). These developments have also added to the feeling of uncertainty in the minds of public as to what could happen. The litigations between within the NPF groups owing loyalty to the party president Dr. Shürhozelie and the other under Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio over which group is the real NPF. This has also created a peculiar situation where the NPF party has no government and the government has no party. The legislators in the ruling government comprise of 36 NPF (excluding the Speaker), seven independents and four BJP. Those outside the government include 11 NPF and
one independent. There is also the possibility of Modi deciding to announce a solution to the Naga issue before the election schedule by FebruaryMarch 2018. If that happens then election could be postponed and an “interim government” put in place to implement the clauses of such an agreement. However, government of India’s Interlocutor to the Naga Peace Talk R.N. Ravi had clarified to Nagaland Post that there was no such time frame since negotiations were under process and option for wider consultations with other groups and hohos also been considered before inking any final agreement. It was also revealed that the government of India was also aware of the sentiments of the Nagas of Nagaland over inclusion of 6 Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) in the
NSCN (I-M) cautions hostel owners, teachers D I M A P U R , AU G 2 9 (NPN): NSCN (I-M) through its ministry of kilo affairs has cautioned the owners of hostels and teachers for imposing “unreasonable and unacceptable conditions” on the students in running private hostels and tuitions. In this regard, the kilo affairs laid down certain dos and don’ts, MIP said in a statement. It has instructed the hostel owners to ensure that the basic necessities for the overall development of the students be made available and hostels should be isolated from crowded areas to avoid unwanted disturbances. To relieve the distress of the students, it also asked the teachers to charge a maximum of Rs. 500 per subject for tuition in classroom, and Rs. 800 per subject for home tuition. The kilo affairs issued
the instructions after many hostels supposed to provide basic necessities were found to be lacking. It added that rooms in some hostels were small, overcrowded and lack required numbers of bathrooms/toilets negating basic hygienic principles and electrical lightings. It also pointed out that some hostels were running without wardens, proper rules and regulations and administration. The kilo affairs further said that some teachers were charging exorbitant fees ranging from Rs. 3000 to Rs. 4000 for private tuitions and classes conducted only two to three times a week. Reiterating that such practices of “daylight robbery” has put the fate of students in uncertainty and despair, the kilo affairs has warned of stringent action against the defaulters.
peace process and within the framework agreement. On several occasions the various NNPGs have reminded the Centre that they have to be included in the expected agreement since it involved Nagaland state and since the framework agreement makes no mention of either ‘Manipur’ or even ‘Assam’ or ‘Arunachal Pradesh’ etc. These above political aspects presently casting their long shadows over Nagaland state has given the Modi government a taste of the complexity of Naga politics. It may be mentioned that RN Ravi has been given one-year extension as chairman of Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC). He was made the JIC chief for three years in 2014. JIC is tasked to assess intelligence gathered by various snoop agencies including IB and RAW.

Breaking from tradition, Jasmeet was appointed Gurmeet’s successor, an unprecedented move as the sect had never seen a head from the immediate family of the Dera chief. Jasmeet is a businessman and is married to Punjab Congress leader Harminder Singh Jassi’s daughter. Various reports have suggested that Jasmeet was declared the heir to his father’s throne in 2007, after the latter was chargesheeted by the CBI in rape and murder cases. KO H I M A , A U G 2 9 (NPN): Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) home department will stage a National Emergency Preparedness Exercise (NEPEx) across the state on August 30 at 11 a.m consisting of a mega mock exercise. Briefing media persons at his office chamber, home commissioner, Temjen Toy informed that Nagaland being the 5th seismic zone, prone to earthquake, whereby August 30 exercise would be largely on earthquake and the scenario will be 8.4 intensity earthquakes all over the state. Toy appealed the public not to panic but to cooperate with the authorities for smooth conduct of the mock exercise as such drills/exercise have proven to be most useful as they increase awareness as well as equip the citizens to respond appropriately during times of actual disasters. He lamented that people considered such mock
drill as a child’s play but it was not and said everything would be for real except the actual disaster and casualties but this was to prepare “our” effectiveness on resilience to meet with any kind of disaster. Citing the instances of the fire that broke out at chief minister’s official residence earlier, he said though it was not natural disaster yet the response was poor, people ran out in the streets, VIPs rushing to CM’s place with pilots and escorts (to show solidarity) and the fire engine could not reach on time because the roads were blocked. He said one must be prepared if actual disaster took place and should know how to react and how to respond. He said it would be a very important exercise starting from the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) right down to the last SDRF personnel. Toy said this exercise would also test the strength and weakness of the department which would have a debriefing with all
the districts and see whether any lapses were there. He appealed the public to take it seriously. OSD NSDMA Johnny said sixteen locations were earmarked in Kohima district that would last for about two hours. He said SDRF involving home guards, civil defence in eight districts and all the Alfa companies of IRP, DEF and the village guards for Tuensang and Kiphiri were trained having strength of more than 1000 trained personnel in the state. Workshop on ‘Naga women rights and role in Naga society’
Staff Reporter
D I M A P U R , AU G 2 9 (NPN): Two –day state level consultation workshop on “Naga women rights and role in Naga society” organized by Bethesda Youth Welfare Centre (BYWC) got underway here at Circuit house Dimapur on Tuesday. The speakers for the two day workshop were former additional advocate general & former CBI standing counsel, P.Pius Lotha, executive director, CABA, Dr.Joyce Angami, advocate Guwahati high court, Kohima bench, Apila Sangtam and assistant professor, Dimapur government college, A. Sentiyula. Speaking on the impact of “mineral like oil, coal mining and its impact on women and AFSPA, its long term impact on girls and women in Nagaland”, P.Pius Lotha said the impact on the girl and women would be through hazardous and correlated effect in work place and the direct impact of abusive and extra judicial authority in discharge of duty. Lotha said that in terms of employment for
girl and women it could be classified into skilled and unskilled workmanship. He mentioned undertaking of mineral oil required trained skilled workmanship where girl/woman participation was found to be less. However in industry like coal mining, Pius added that many girls and womenfolk participated in coal bearing areas due to limited source of earning otherwise. Despite the fact that child labour was illegal in India, Puis mentioned that due to hardworking nature of young girls, they have been legally entitled to work in the coal belt. Pius elaborated that pathetic living condition of many uneducated and innocent girls compelled them to encounter unpleasant situations in workplaces. He said that there were many cases of young girl victims which have gone unreported. In this regard, Pius informed that several regulations have been passed by government to ensure safety of women in workplaces, although they have been seldom followed. He cited how United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has framed certain policies,
while Indian government has introduced the Disha project to create opportunities for women in India. On Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) in Nagaland, Pius said that Nagaland has suffered untold sufferings under AFSPA for many years. Pius opined that government should device a formula where rights and privileges of the local people were protected, rather than imposing alien way of life since Naga hill tribes were totally different from main land people. Pius felt that central government needed to listen to the recommendations of various commissions for abrogation of AFSPA. While speaking on “socio economic issues of Naga woman and their role and challenges”, Dr. Joyce Angami said Naga women were caught between traditionalism and modernization. In such scenario she said, proper planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes and schemes would lead to sustainable livelihood activities and eradication of poverty. She hoped that this would ultimately lead to economic empowerment
of women which in turn would enhance their social status. She expressed that quality education and conducive environment, opportunities and support by agencies could enable Naga women to realize their potential in raising the economic status of women and empower them. Delivering keynote address, program director, Bethesda Youth Welfare Centre (BYWC), Chumben Humtsoe believed that collective mind from different professions would help give an insightful and meaning discussion on the topic. He informed that gender equality was a fundamental right as any other in the national and international bills of rights and that foundation for a peaceful and prosperous world and its observation could help fuel economic growth and benefit societies and the human race at large. While acknowledging that woman issue has been recognized by Millennium Development Goal (MDG), to ensure gender equality, Chumben observed that objective of the workshop would be to identify through various

Northeast
Nagaland Post, Dimapur Wednesday, august 30, 2017
Tripura tribal parties reject Centre’s SADC proposal Manipur observes Haipou tribals. “BJP government did nothing for the tribals in Northeast, they are only doing politics and offering impractical suggestions,” Dey told the reporters. There are 16 autonomous district councils (ADCs) in Northeast India, facilitating the socioeconomic development of tribals, who make up 27-28 per cent of the region’s total population of around 45.58 million. Of the 16 ADCs, six are in Manipur, three each in Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram and one in Tripura. Several tribal parties, including the IPFT, have been agitating since 2009 for upgrading the TTAADC to a separate tribal state. TTAADC has jurisdiction over two-thirds of Tripura’s 10,491 sq.km. area that is home to over 12,16,000 people, mostly tribals. The IPFT had blocked
National Highway-8, the lifeline of Tripura, and the lone railway line in the state for more than 10 days from July 10 over their separate state demand, causing acute shortage of essential items and hardship to the people. After intervention by the state and central governments, besides Governor Tathagata Roy, the IPFT lifted the blockade on July 20. Almost all major political parties, including CPIM-led Left Front, Congress, BJP and other tribal parties like INPT, have rejected the demand, saying it is not practical to divide the small state. Ahead of the assembly elections in Tripura, due in February next year, the separate tribal-based state demand has snowballed into a major political issue in the state, the tribals play a crucial political role in the state, with 20 of the 60 assembly seats reserved for the tribals.

IMPHAL, Aug 29: Manipur Tuesday observed the 86th death anniversary of Haipou Jadonang, one of the pioneer freedom fighters who was hanged by the then colonial British on this day in 1931. The state level observation function was held in Imphal’s Haipou Jadonang Park. Paying floral tributes to the statue of the freedom fighter was the main highlight of the observance. Speaking on the occasion, former Manipur deputy chief minister Gaikhangam urged the people of the state not to be caught in the trap of breaking Manipur. “We, the people of both hills and valley should stand united to protect the territorial integrity of the state. We must safeguard the state as well as the country which was protected by our forefathers by sacrificing

Guwahati, Aug 29 (PTI): The overall flood situation in Assam improved Tuesday though a fresh death was reported in Morigaon district to take the toll in the third wave of flood to 74. Over one lakh people are still suffering across four districts in the state. According to a report by the ASDMA, one person was killed by the flood in Morigaon district. The total number of persons killed in this year’s flood-related incidents in Assam went up to 158. The plea has claimed that there were sufficient historic books and documents which indicated that Guru Nanak Ji, the first Guru of Sikhs, had gone to the gurdwara Gurudongmar. It has sought the apex court’s direction prohibiting the authorities from carrying out any demolition or renovation work at the site. The plea also said if the authorities wished to carry out any renovation work at the site, a prior notice of one month should be given to the priest so that appropriate action to shift the Guru Granth Sahib as per the Sikh code of conduct could be taken.

New Delhi, Aug 29 (PTI): The Supreme Court Tuesday agreed to hear a petition seeking to restrain the Sikkim government from allegedly demolishing a gurdwara in the state in the garb of renovating it. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra directed the petitioner to serve a copy of his plea to Sikkim’s standing counsel. The petitioner has moved the apex court alleging that the state authorities have illegally removed the holy book, Guru Granth Sahib, from the site and would demolish the gurdwara in the name of renovation. The bench, which also comprised Justices P C Pant and D Y Chandrachud, sought to know from the petitioner as to why he had

Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram, after a day-long visit to the Leftruled state, told the media on Monday: “The NDA (National Democratic Alliance) government at the Centre does not support the demand for a separate state in Tripura. He said that the Tripura government and the state assembly had sent several proposals on a number of occasions to amend the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to confer more power on the TTAADC and other tribal autonomous bodies of the northeastern states. Agartala, Aug 29 (IANS): Tripura’s tribal parties, who have been agitating for a separate state, on Tuesday rejected the central government’s proposal for setting up a State Autonomous Development Council (SADC). Ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-led Left Front, the Congress and tribal parties, including Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT), termed the proposal as “vague”, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supported it. On the other hand, tribal parties like Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) and Twipraland State Party (TSP), who have been agitating for upgrading the existing Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) to a separate tribal state, rejected the Centre’s proposal. Nagaland Post Vol. XXVII NO. 265 Dimapur, Wednesday, August 30, 2017
People have spoken
D
ays after the massive public rally conducted by ACAUT Nagaland in Dimapur on August 25, the resolutions adopted reverberate across the length and breadth of Nagaland including the north east since the issues provided a very crucial meeting point among all citizens. Citizens of Nagaland have spoken in no unclear terms by expressing their total approval of the resolutions. The developments in Nagaland also cannot escape the attention of the Modi government since the resolutions proposed and then adopted at the rally, spring up very crucial challenges on political, social and economic issues pivotal for peace and development of the state. The seven resolutions include: 1. urging the government of India to speed up solution to the Naga political issue by inviting all other Naga Political Groups (NPGs) without further delay; 2. urging the government of India to remove all unconstitutional posts of parliamentary secretaries and advisers in line with the ruling of the Supreme Court on July 27,2017;3. demand on the state government to enact the Lok Ayukta bill in the state assembly within 2017, to check corruption in all forms including termination of all those appointed in the government after June 6,2016 failing which ACAUT warned, it will call for a state-wide bandh;4.urge the roads and bridges department to start road maintenance with funds already drawn;5.renew its demand for central probe into the siphoning of PDS items, developmental funds and fuel adulteration; 6.demand CBI inquiry on the M.K.R. Pillai disproportionate income and alleged siphoning of police modernisation schemes and other frauds committed by ‘Nagaland cop turned Kerala billionaire.” And 7 back the NBCC on clean election for one man one vote. Out of the seven resolutions, four of them were directed at the state government and the remaining were directed at the Modi government at the Centre. The ACAUT rally attracted very keen interest among people from other parts of India especially the mandarins at South Block. It was seen as an ongoing expression of the people of Nagaland covering the issues that formed the resolutions. Essentially, the rally was a call to ‘reclaim the land’ or wrest back power from those very few hundred politicians, bureaucrats and middlemen who have been practically ravishing Nagaland for decades through blatant abuse of power, corrupt practices and looting funds meant to build the state. Nagaland, like few of the states where corruption of the worst magnitude afflicts the entire strata of society; unfortunately, there has been too little done in checking the menace and ensuring that there is fear of the law(even if not of God). The ‘individual corruption’ has institutionalized corruption to become so deep rooted that people have become insensitive to it. This condition is best exemplified by a word called asociality- a moral abyss afflicting contemporary society. The symptom is that ordinary people believe that there is a price tag for everything as those in power have purchased the mandate to serve personal, family or community needs above all. The force of public reasoning in a democracy offers some measure of protection to freedoms and so the opportunity for intellectual synthesis offer protection for a free society that all seek to achieve. This goal to reform Nagaland calls for a greater involvement at every level and it would be a big let down if the mass public response is ‘diverted’ or ‘siphoned off’ towards a political formation.
DailyDevotion The Unsurpassed Intimacy of Tested Faith Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?” —John 11:40 Every time you venture out in your life of faith, you will find something in your circumstances that, from a commonsense standpoint, will flatly contradict your faith. But common sense is not faith, and faith is not common sense. In fact, they are as different as the natural life and the spiritual. Can you trust Jesus Christ where your common sense cannot trust Him? Can you venture out with courage on the words of Jesus Christ, while the realities of your commonsense life continue to shout, “It’s all a lie”? When you are on the mountaintop, it’s easy to say, “Oh yes, I believe God can do it,” but you have to come down from the mountain to the demon-possessed valley and face the realities that scoff at your Mount-of-Transfiguration belief (see Luke 9:28-42). Every time my theology becomes clear to my own mind, I encounter something that contradicts it. As soon as I say, “I believe ‘God shall supply all [my] need,’ ” the testing of my faith begins (Philippians 4:19). When my strength runs dry and my vision is blinded, will I endure this trial of my faith victoriously or will I turn back in defeat? Faith must be tested, because it can only become your intimate possession through conflict. What is challenging your faith right now? The test will either prove your faith right, or it will kill it. Jesus said, “Blessed is he who is not offended because of Me” Matthew 11:6). The ultimate thing is confidence in Jesus. “We have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end…” (Hebrews 3:14). Believe steadfastly on Him and everything that challenges you will strengthen your faith. There is continual testing in the life of faith up to the point of our physical death, which is the last great test. Faith is absolute trust in God— trust that could never imagine that He would forsake us (see Hebrews 13:5-6).

Post-mortem Reality check on clean election
B
rief résumé on Clean Election. It was in 1992, the first IofC Clean Election Campaign kick off in Taiwan. That year witnessed political parties other than the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) contest for Parliamentary election. The Initiative of Change (IofC) Team launched a nationwide campaign inviting commoners to sign a declaration not to sell their votes to candidates contesting the Parliamentary seats. This wind of change captured the imagination of citizens and attracted several NGOs and Church Bodies, who joined the bandwagon to usher a new political era in Taiwan. The outcome of this noble initiative resulted in 67 NGOs pledging their support, and prior to election 670,000 signed declaration not to accept bribe, and not to vote for any candidate who offer bribe. It also had an impact on 350 candidates, out of them 162 signed a formal pledge against vote-buying. This political reform to nip corruption in the bud had many takers not only in Taiwan’s national politics but in International level as well. This new comer in modern politics, who saw the bright light of the day first in Asian Continent, went overseas, this time to African Continent in Kenya. Based on the success in Taiwan, Nairobi-based lawyer Joseph Karanja, kick-started Clean Election Campaign for the upcoming, 1997 General Election in Kenya. Joseph pumped in additional oxygen to CEC to make it more relevant to his compatriots. He ingeniously devised this campaign as an attempt to encourage every Kenyan to take responsibility of their country. It worked perfectly as intended, taking root rapidly as the majority of Kenyans longed to have clean nation. In Kenya Church played a pivotal role taking the center-stage, the heads of Catholic, Anglican, other Christian Denominations as well as Muslim leaders asked their faithful to desist from all undemocratic electoral processes. Twenty-two Catholic Bishops invited all Kenyans, particularly the eight million Catholics, to extend support in all fronts and expose any activity that might lead to unfair election, and not to be part of any violence. This mass based conscientization on need for Clean Election and evil of sullied election became national movement garnering the unwavering support of media and other organizations. In Kenya 700,000 pledges were signed and the antecedent of this campaign sent chills down the spine of corrupt ministers, 11 ministers and 26 deputy
A
ministers lost their seats and then President Arap Moi’s majority in parliament was decimated to single digit 4. Subsequently, CEC has made inroad in other countries, viz., Solomon Island, Sierra Leone and Ghana, and some of the States in the USA (In USA it focuses on fund raising issues). After two and a half decades of globetrotting experience, CEC returns to its birth Continent this time, in Nagaland, where election year is the most abhorrent time of all times. To fight this menace plaguing our state, NBCC has initiated CEC for the upcoming Assembly Election in 2018. A gleam of hope towards change for better tomorrow, and to make this campaign feasible much hype and publicity has been created in print media and public rallies. However, there is a huge unbridgeable gulf between the proponents of CEC and masses of people who are actual stake-holders in this regard. As it was in the past elections, so it is today, Nagas in towns and villages have begun scripting their plot for the approaching election to reap maximum benefit. The intending candidates are already flanked with their supporters in huge numbers with fleet of vehicles accompanying them, who are now given VVIP status by the voters of their constituencies. And the most cherished hobby we Nagas like the most is already at play, walk up to the doors of will-be contesting candidates and go away with cash. What do we see here??? Apparently, vote selling and buying in the Market of Cheap Naga Politics. And it has already begun. Alas! What an irony? We do exactly what we preach we will not do. This reality eloquently portrays how deep we Nagas have plunged into the abyss of spiritual, moral and social decadence. The only institution which I thought would have credible voice was the Church, and the voice of the Shepherds I thought would be recognized, but I am proved wrong. Perhaps, we have intoned the song of our Master Jesus in wrong pitch. For he says, “I am the Good Shepherd. I know my own and my own know me,….and they will listen to my voice.” (Jn. 10:14-16). Then, why do the sheep not recognize the voice of the shepherds in Nagaland? Let me be very honest, factual and realistic here, for our good, let us not be like ostrich scooping its head down the sand thinking it has escaped the gaze of the onlookers. So than, the honest talking point I am going to enumerate are: many shepherds in our society have extreme lust for money, many are semi-literate who
s a student of economics I got tempted to look at how far this country has come since the British left. Imaging taking responsibility for the governance of a country in 1947 when only 16 per cent of Indians were literate, life expectancy at birth was 32 years, per capita income at current prices was `247, and per capita consumption of electricity was 16.3 kWh per year. Lesser mortals would have concluded that India was ungovernable. But our visionary leaders, policy makers and planners bravely shouldered the awesome responsibility of governing a vast and volatile nation. On the owing of their tireless effort, India has made much progress, come a long way since August 1947 and can look forward to more. Though, the first 20 years can be described as the lost years, the second 25 years were even more lost- so probably best described as the atrociously lost years and the most recent 25 years can be thought
are not able to distinguish between right and wrong and so churn out faulty teachings, many are preoccupied with politics rather than affairs of the Church, and many preach against other Churches without an iota of historical fact, having dreams and visions every fortnight. If these are the shepherds we have in our society, how on earth should the flock hear the shepherds’ voice, in fact, what they hear is cacophony, which makes rational listening an impossible task. Therefore, what the Church needs to do is set right its house in order first, instead of doing the superficial exercise of cleaning the cup outside and leaving the inside of it with full of worms and filth. When the inside is clean, the voice of the shepherds will echo across the hills and valleys and all who hear will take home the message. Having made these candid observations let me come to CEC campaign, and the stark existential reality in Nagaland. Will it have a magical effect as it did in other countries? My take on this: I wish it did, but the ground reality is it will NOT. Sounds pessimistic but it is true, accept it. Who is ignorant of the fact that 90% of the electorate in the state are composed of poor, educated unemployed youth, illiterate youth, sick and infirm old? And what do they need? Certainly money, employment, house, medicine and food. Who has to provide these opportunities? We know our shameful history. Therefore, the pointed question is; do we expect these sections of society to walk down the line of democracy naked, empty stomach, homeless, jobless, enduring their pain with stoic display of strength till they go down the grave as clean voters without any expectation? I have a genuine doubt, the fact is starting from the Most Influential to the least Aam Admi, and from the Most Reverend to the most humble soul, all of us cast our vote for personal and family benefit. This is an uncontestable fact at this juncture, where only few Government jobs are available and where employment orders are issued under the table, so logically speaking, to avail it one needs to vote for candidate who can win election and be in power. And have you ever heard of contracts being given to voters of other political parties because we are considerate Christians? And if our aim is to elect God fearing leaders, why there is an open support to leaders who are tainted, who have charges against them, who are womanizers, who are cheats, openly accept bribes in broad day light and indulges in corruption? And
India @ of 70
of us the years of modest positivism. In 70 years, India witnessed a great leap of change and swing. Things have changed. Businesses are not evil; entrepreneurs are all not crooks; laws are not all draconian. 1971 was Socialist India. 2014 is India, flourishing market economy. India is today the world’s 7th largest economy. India is now among the world’s top exporting countries. Innovation has improved productivity so dramatically that merchandise exports are growing faster than 30 per cent annually. GDP growth has doubled or tripled since 2004 in six large, poor statesUttar Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh. Today we are one of the consumption engines of the world as we are guzzling colas, downloading music on hour iPads and zipping around in our sedans. India is on the verge of becoming a great power in the world. In 2016, India’s GDP growth rate was 8.0 per cent, India witnessed 3.4 per cent
are we telling poor people who need money to meet their basic requirements not to accept money, when MLAs and MPs are indulging in horse-trading in Parliament and State Assembly, openly buying support with bundles of cash, in spite of having more than what they need? And when the churches accept donations in 6 and 7 digits without ascertaining the source of money, how do we expect our starving brethren who don’t get their rightful due to be clean. First we need to walk the talk. If at all we need clean nation with clean citizens, public representatives must be clean, church and civil organizations must set an honorable example. And secondly, world class education to one and all and making it affordable to every child must be the number one promise in the manifesto of political parties. This should be followed by employment generation where citizens can contribute to nation building and earn their living. Without this basic arithmetic the present proposition of six months Clean Election Campaign and four years and six months of dirty ruling cuts no ice. A society infested with corruption, nepotism, with tribe and clan division, with illiterate and ignorant population, with shepherds in the garb of wolves, with youth having no future can never have clean citizens and clean nation, in short there cannot be clean election. Therefore, in my humble opinion, to have clean election, we need clean citizens who are educated knowing their rights and duties towards nation building. We need clean candidates whose reputations are impeccable, who manifestly live their life championing the causes espoused by public as something good for all and not illiterate and greedy hoodlums who are a blot to Nagas in particular and Nation in general. Finally, if we wish to replicate the success of CEC as in other countries, how many candidates will be signing the Pledge in the Name of God not to buy votes? How many pledges will be signed by voters in the Name of God not to sell their votes? And what is the concrete roadmap laid out post-election that there will not be any corruption as the follow up of Clean Election? And what is the magic formula to emancipate 90% of voters who still need socio-political, economic and even liberation from gender prejudice? Let us think over it rationally, setting aside our usual emotional and religious sentiments. Fr. Vinoto Justin, Lazami

The new system of election
T
he election system changes from time to time to suit the existing people and time. Many voters make sure that their candidate win the game by hook or crook. For this, they spend sleepless night instigating against the opponent candidates. Many young people become victims of money, drinks and drugs during election. There may be some enthusiastic villages and towns where the smell of election has already brought some smiles on the faces of people. Some people must have bought trousers and blazers with extra pockets to be filled with the warmth of money. Of late, the new system of election seems quite interesting. Politicians use many loudspeakers through the broker in the person of some well-known people in the community. The VIPs, Officers, public leaders are the main target to get into the nervous system of the people and place. A huge sum of money is poured into their basin to make them shout aloud for the candidate. Their dry throats will be quenched with the latest branded drinks of many sorts. It is these groups who spoil the peaceful atmosphere with their octopus behaviour. They know which tentacles should be extended to which direction. Many common people become victims of this foul game. It is true that ‘clean election campaign’ has made some impact in Nagaland (both positive and negative impact). All the same, many VIPs, Officers and public leaders continue to get extraordinary help to make their life secure and comfortable. Whereas the common people are satisfied with one packet of salt or one kilo of sugar. If the so called higher class gets Rs. 100000 for one vote, a simple villager gets Rs. 1000. (Oh! Two zeros are missing; just add two eggs for time being). This is called ‘the new system of election.’ Money speaks well during election. This is how the learned and the educated class cheat from both ends. They remain leaders because they know how to bark, not how to live. After swallowing huge sums of money from one candidate, they remain rich and healthy till the next election. The next election may find them with another candidate who offers them more than the former candidate. (The same is with the candidates who move from one party to another depending on the wave of money). They are really wise and prudent in fishing out money from the candidates. Many candidates dry up their treasuries because of this selfish group. This group knows how to receive from every source and make noise like thunder from one mountain
may be well over 70 per cent now but there are significant gaps in schooling performance that need to be filled. Life expectancy may be more than twice that it was in 1947, but health care remains abysmal. Public health care is mired in corruption, inefficiency, and chronic incapacity; private health care is expensive and often exploitative. India has much to celebrate by way to go in making this growth process more socially, economically and regionally inclusive. Seizing the opportunities for reform today- to create jobs, improve access to quality education and health, develop infrastructure, and ensure a cleaner environment- will make it possible to harness globalization and realize India’s potential in the decades ahead. Governance still needs a miracle. Before becoming a superpower India should focus more on providing dignity to its citizen. Prof Mithilesh Kumar Sinha, finance officer, Nagaland University, Lumami
to another. The mountains and hills in Nagaland are tired of such noise. They have served an ultimatum to the forest department to keep them serene and calm in the coming elections. Almost ever y tribe has formed an association called “Officers Forum/Association.” In every election, there is always a division between the “Officers Forum” vs “Common People.” The common people are foolish enough to be trapped by the words of the so called ‘Officers’. The existence of the “Officers Forum” is an invitation for the formation of another association – “Nonofficers forum.” Will this be accepted by the higher class (you call them officers) of the society? I believe they will not even consider the latter as an association. The higher class should remain as association, and others should not behave like them. Whoever tries to be like them shall be pushed down from the cliff. Please find for yourselves as to who breaks the society from within; the common people or the learned body? In Nagaland, all become leaders during election. But the post-election scenario will find no leaders or speakers for a good cause. The sudden disappearance of leaders will speak volumes of character deformation. All active members during election will die down after election. They will be back to their normal work place. The VIPs and Officers will return to cities and towns. Most of you will see them only by the next election. The learned people of the community must be wise in their dealings with the common people. They must show the way to peace and justice in the society. The common people look upon them for guidance and direction. But if they create negative impact in the society by their divisive forces and mentality, they will only bring disaster upon the people. Their learnings will bring no good news to the society. It is good to be wise and learned, but let our status of life not be the only criteria for dignity in the society. You need to dig you own dignity. Let every Naga see life beyond the turmoil of election. Election comes and goes, but Nagas are greater than election or any other political party. Therefore, we must not allow election to divide us; rather let it gives us the ‘right freedom’ to elect our representatives in the best manner possible with a clear conscience under the banner of Christianity. Let your vote be your only vote. A concerned citizen, Rev. Fr. G. L. Khing, Kohima, (tisislawkhing@gmail.com)

The long and bumpy ride Sir,
The stretch of road from Purana Bazar to Padumpukhuri area is really heartbreaking and painful for the daily commuters. School children travelling in passenger autos have a hard time getting to their schools and back. During the monsoon, this particular area becomes so slushy and slippery, on top of being full of potholes is a daredevil ride for common people. All roads in Dimapur and Nagaland for that matter needs immediate attention if citizens are to commute peacefully and auto drivers are also not subjected to verbal abuse by irate passengers. Every inch of the road invites the inevitable bumpy jolt leaving aching bruises on the body of passengers. For those travelling in good vehicles may not feel the jolt much but even so, the road needs to have a major repairing undertaken at the earliest. There are old passengers apart from children and it is the suffering of these people that really should bring shame to those concerned in maintenance of the roads. Benthunglo K. Lotha, Padumpukhuri

Shimla, Aug 29 (IANS): The CBI on Tuesday arrested eight policemen, including an IPS officer, for the custodial death of an accused in the sensational gang rape and murder of a schoolgirl in Shimla district last month, an official said. The policemen included Inspector General (IG) Zahur H. Zaidi, who was heading the Special Investigation Team probing the crime, Deputy Superintendent Manoj Joshi and a former Station House Officer Rajinder Singh. The policemen were produced before a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Shimla on Tuesday afternoon that sent them to the agency’s custody till September 4. “We made an arrest of eight policemen, including IG Zahur H. Zaidi,” CBI spokesperson Abhishek Dayal told IANS over phone from New Delhi. He said all of them were arrested for the custodial death of an accused.
Police said the 16-yearold girl was offered a lift in a vehicle by the accused on July 4 when she was returning home from school in Kotkhai town, some 56 from the state capital. On the way, they raped and murdered her in a nearby forest. Her naked body with injury marks was found two days later. The arrested persons are prime accused Rajinder Singh, who offered her the lift, Ashish Chauhan, Subhash Bisht, Deepak Kumar, Suraj Singh and Lokjan. They believed to be drunk at the time of the crime. The autopsy report mentioned injuries on the girl’s body. However, a new twist in the case came after Rajinder Singh allegedly murdered fellow accused Suraj Singh in the police lockup in Kotkhai on July 19. 7 BJP turning Article 35A into Hindu vs Muslim issue: Omar
Jammu, Aug 29 (IANS): Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday accused the BJP of trying to turn the issue of Article 35A of the Indian Constitution into a Hindu versus Muslim issue. The BJP was also trying to convert the issue into a state versus rest of the country issue after falling short of arguments to justify their moves on the matter, the National Conference Working President said while addressing people in Darhal area of Rajouri district. Abdullah asked how could critics of the National Conference point fingers against it for opposing what he called were clandestine moves to get repealed Article 35A, which he said was a constitutional guarantee to the people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh for preserving their distinct identity and dignity, irrespective of religion or caste. He accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of dividing people on region

and religion lines to further its anti-people agenda. “Article 35A reflects our identity, it allows us to shape our destiny, and so we cannot let it go,” the former Chief Minister said. The National Conference leader cautioned people not to remain complacent on this sensitive issue. “The pen and inkpot party (People’s Democratic Party’s election symbol) had been conceived to further the agenda of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the BJP in this state”, he claimed.

system of denominations of currency (coins and notes), the RBI had said, is one that would minimise the number of denominations and concurrently increase the probability of proffering exact change. “So, what should be the optimal mix of currency denominations? Many countries have opted to use a near variation of the Renard Series, i.e., 1:2 or 1:2.5 ratio between adjacent denominations of currency, which means that the denomination should be twice or two and half times of its preceding denomination,” the central bank had said.

New Delhi, Aug 29 (PTI): Rent paid by patients for hospital rooms will be exempted from the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the government said Tuesday. Issuing clarifications on levy of GST on the tariff for various accommodation services, the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) said the tax on rooms in the hotel, guest house or inns will be payable on the actual amount charged and not on declared or published tariff. “Declared or published tariff is relevant only for the determination of the tax rate slab,” the clarification issued in form of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) said. No GST is applicable on room tariffs of less than Rs 1,000. A 12 per cent tax will be levied on the tariff of more than Rs 1,000 and less than Rs 2,500 while an 18 per cent levy would come in for room rents of between Rs 2,500 and Rs 7,500. A GST of 28 per cent will be charged on tariff greater than Rs 7,500. The tax will be levied on the entire amount, including charges for extra bed. “GST rate would be determined according to the declared tariff for the room, and GST at the rate so determined will be levied on the entire amount charged from the customer,” it said.

“The measure is expected to bring the prices of onions down to a reasonable level to give an immediate relief to the consumers,” the statement said. Onion prices have shot up in the last few weeks due to depleting old stocks and concerns about this year’s output as kharif sowing area is down by 20-30 per cent. Recently, Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan had also written to the Commerce Ministry seeking imposition of Minimum Export Price (MEP) of USD 450 per tonne on onion to curb outbound shipments and withdrawal of incentives given to traders for its export. Onion MEP was scrapped in December 2015. The MEP is the minimum rate below which exports cannot be undertaken.

NEW DELHI, AUG 29 (NPN): Centre has allowed states/UTs to impose control measures on traders/ dealers of onion to ensure adequate availability of essential commodity at reasonable prices. The decision was conveyed through a notification dated August 25, 2017. The move has been necessitated due to the abnormal rise in prices of onions in recent weeks particularly from July end of this year onwards, though the production and supply of onions in the market was better than last year during the same period. States can now impose stock limits on onions and undertake various measures like de-hoarding operations, action against speculators and profiteers. As per all India aver-
age retail price, the prices have increased from Rs. 15 per kg to Rs. 28.94 per kg. In the Metros the rise has been even steeper, Rs. 31 per kg in Chennai, Rs. 38 per kg in Delhi, Rs. 40 per kg in Kolkata and Rs. 33 per kg in Mumbai. After examination of all the circumstances, Centre inferred that there were some other reasons than shortage of onions, contributing to the abnormal price rise of onions like hoarding, speculation etc. In this regard, States/ UTs were required to be enabled to take action against those traders who were engaged in speculative trading, hoarding and profiteering in onions. Therefore, it said that it was necessary to enable states/UTs to take action against those traders who are engaged in speculative trading, hoarding and profiteering.

Harvey rampage continues
10 dead from deluge in Texas; Trump to visit damaged areas
A trailer park is flooded in La Grange, Texas, Monday, after floodwaters from Tropical Storm Harvey inundated the area. (AP/PTI)
H OUS TON, Au g 2 9 (pti): Harvey, one of the most destructive storms in US history, battered Texas for the fourth day Tuesday even as more heavy rains were expected to lash the region, lowering hopes of relief from the deluge that has submerged homes, tur ned neighbourhood streets into lakes and killed 10 people. The first responders to the catastrophic flooding took to boats to rescue stranded thousands of residents. Authorities warned that more than 30,000 people across the region could be forced from their homes when the skies clear later this week. Ten people have died in storm-related incidents, six of them drowned in a van while trying to escape the floods. The six - including four children - were unable to get out through the back
‘You’re worst FS ever’, Basit to Chaudhry Islamabad, Aug 29 (PTI): Pakistan’s former envoy to India Abdul Basit has slammed former top diplomat and the country’s ambassador to the US Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry as the “worst foreign secretary ever” and blamed him for several foreign policy disasters including the Ufa joint statement with India. Basit, who was twice overlooked for the post of foreign secretary, made the harsh remarks in a letter – widely circulated on social media - dated July 5, 2017 and printed on his official letterhead while he still served as Pakistan’s high commissioner in New Delhi. The Foreign Office has not confirmed the authenticity of the letter. However, the Dawn news, which published the letter on its website, quoted its sources in the Foreign Office as saying that the letter is authentic. “The more I think the more I am convinced that you have been the worst Foreign Secretary ever,” Basit wrote in response to a farewell letter by Chaudhry which he sent to Basit on March 12 after his appointment as the ambassador of Pakistan to Washington.
Kim Jong-Un has third child: Reports Seoul, Aug 29 (agencies): North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has fathered another child, reports said Tuesday, after his wife dropped out of the public eye for several months. First lady Ri Sol-Ju delivered the couple`s third child in February, the Yonhap news agency reported Tuesday, citing South Korean lawmakers who were briefed by the National Intelligence Service. Ri had disappeared for an extended period last year, raising speculation that she could be pregnant. News of the new arrival emerged as North Korea fired a ballistic missile over northern Japan. According to previous intelligence reports from Seoul`s spy agency, Ri married Kim in 2009 and gave birth to their first child the following year, with their second born in 2013.
door of the van as flood water pushed against their efforts. According to the National Weather Ser vice (NWS), up to 3 inches of rainfall was expected in eastern Harris, eastern Galveston and eastern Montgomery counties by Thursday morning. Harder hit in the coming days will be counties further east, including those along the Texas-Louisiana border, likely to be inundated with up to 15 more inches of rainfall. According to CNN Weather Centre, Harvey was gearing up for another landfall tomorrow morning near the Texas-Louisiana border. Houston, the fourthlargest city in the US and the most populous in Texas, was still conducting emergency operations, with multiple road closures and no
access to area hospitals for ambulances, four days since Hurricane Harvey, a Category 4 storm, made landfall on Friday night. Harvey has since lost its intensity, leaving behind a trail of destruction that could take years to overcome. Desperate residents have taken to social media to plead for help, posting images of their families stranded at home. US President Donald Trump and and First Lady Melania was expected in Texas today to show support for residents and to assess recovery efforts in the face of the “terrible tragedy”. Ahead of his travel to the storm-ravaged Gulf Coast, Trump said: “Right now every American heart sends its love and support to those whose lives have been upended.” “We will get through this. We will come out stronger.” The president and the first lady will sidestep Houston, where flood waters were still rising. Instead, they will visit the Corpus Christi area, where Harvey made landfall, packing 130 mile-an-hour winds. The US Department of Labour has approved a USD 10 million National Dislocated Worker Grant to help with cleanup and recovery efforts in Texas, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Fighting ‘Islamic terror’ top priority, says Macron Lo n d o n, Au g 2 9 (Agencies): French President Emmanuel Macron says fighting Islamist terrorism will be his top foreign policy priority. Defeating so-called Islamic State (IS) in Iraq and Syria must go hand-in-hand with anti-terror measures in Africa, he told some 200 French ambassadors. He called the security of French citizens “the raison d’être of our diplomacy”. IS-inspired terror attacks in France have killed more than 230 people since early 2015. “We need an inclusive transition in Syria,” he said, adding that France and its partners would have to invest in the reconstruction of both Syria and Iraq. “We need to win the peace in both countries.” He also spoke of some “specific results with the Russians” on preventing further use of chemical weapons in Syria, but did not elaborate. “Providing security for our citizens means that the fight against Islamist terrorism is our first priority,” he said. Within weeks of becoming president, Mr Macron held separate talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Paris, visited French troops in troubled Mali and toured Central and Eastern Europe. But recent opinion

polls suggest a big slump in his popularity. Besides security, he stressed that French independence would be one of his foreign policy priorities. Another would be restoring French influence internationally. New ‘Africa axis’ He noted that poverty was a driver of African migration towards Europe, and stressed the importance of development aid for the Sahel region. That was the focus of talks he held on Monday with the leaders of Niger, Chad and Libya, and European partners. “Africa is a continent of the future - we cannot just leave it alone,” he said, outlining a strategy of “creating an axis between Africa, the Mediterranean and Europe”. This year some 125,000 migrants have crossed the Mediterranean on perilous journeys, during which more than 2,000 drowned. More than 90,000 of them reached Italy’s shores, mostly fleeing violence and chaos in Libya.
Princess Diana’s death forced British royals to overhaul image L ONDON, Au g 2 9 (Agencies): Public anger at the monarchy following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales marked a turning point for the royal family, forcing a revolution in its communications machine that helped revive the brand. While mourners left thousands of bouquets of flowers at the gates of Buckingham Palace and nearby Kensington Palace, the royal family was nowhere to be seen after Diana’s death on August 31, 1997. Prince Charles, divorced from Diana, and his mother Queen Elizabeth II remained at Balmoral Castle, their remote Scottish residence, saying nothing for days. Despite the British public’s mounting anger at the royal response — or lack thereof — it was not until the day before Diana’s funeral that the queen finally broke her silence with a live broadcast to the nation. The monarch’s distance from the public outpouring of grief for the woman dubbed the “people’s princess” by then prime minister Tony Blair caused resentment. Having been immersed in protocol and tradition for centuries, the royals quickly realised they were in urgent need of an image overhaul. In her tribute to Di-
ana, the queen said: “I, for one, believe that there are lessons to be drawn from her life and from the extraordinary and moving reaction to her death.” The result was the royals “having to become more professional, and having to take real control and take outside advice and better professional people,” public relations exper t Mark Borkowski told AFP. The out-of-touch Buckingham Palace press office, which Borkowski remembers used to close over the weekends while some of the most interesting Diana stories unfolded, underwent a shake-up. Sluggish employees were replaced with PRsavvy professionals. Patrick Jephson, Diana’s former private secretary, said the current image of the monarchy was the product of a “very sophisticated news management campaign”. The current media strategy focuses on distributing positive information about the monarchy, while at the same time protecting the royals’ privacy. One of the first tasks post-Diana was to create a more “human” image for the queen, who had been reported as being more concerned about her dogs and horses than her subjects. Charles, mocked for

being haughty and stiff, has also gone through a revamp since his ex-wife’s death. “He has spent an enormous amount of money hiring very sophisticated, professional, political-style spin doctors to manage his image,” Jephson said. The investment has paid off, with the public’s gradual acceptance of Charles’s relationship with his former mistress Camilla, whom he married in 2005. The extent of the royal recovery could be seen in 2011, when Diana’s eldest son Prince William married Kate in a ceremony watched worldwide as Britons held street parties in the couple’s honour. “What they tried to do was to promote what was good about the royal family,” said Robert Jobson, co-author of the book “Diana: Closely Guarded Secret”. Queen Elizabeth fell well and truly back in favour at the 2012 London Olympics, when she approved a stunt that appeared to show her leaping out of a helicopter into the stadium alongside secret agent James Bond, played by Daniel Craig. “They want to be a more approachable, less aloof family... Not these upper-class aristocrats who don’t understand the people,” said Borkowski.

polarising reviews for Swift’s comeback single, a melodramatic pot-boiler which sees the pop queen turn on her critics declaring, “maybe I got mine, but you’ll all get yours”. Spin magazine called the track “hard” and “cheerless”, while the New York Times described the lyrics as “powerful, yet joyless”. Rolling Stone was more positive, praising Swift and playing the villain and “owning her bad press instead of merely brushing it off ”. The lyrics contain a barely veiled reference to Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, who tussled with Swift when she objected to the line “I made that bitch famous” in one of West’s songs. She said: “Besides the obvious day to day — it’s different at every age, I’m sure; right now it’s just non-stop — I think that the bigger change is in my heart: this newness. Cool.’ And then you have a kid and your heart expands and there’s this new part of you that you didn’t know existed. n just four days, the star has broken three major streaming records, beating the likes of Adele and Ed Sheeran. Look What You Made Me Do was played more than eight million times on Spotify last Friday, more than any other song has achieved on its first day of release. The video also broke YouTube’s one-day streaming record. It received 28 million views in 24 hours, overtaking Adele’s Hello. A separate lyric video also attracted 19m views on its first day - more than double the previous recordholder, Something Just Like This by The Chainsmokers and Coldplay. The figures defy the
wider, referencing everything from Swift’s relationship with Tom Hiddleston to her recent victory in a sexual assault case. Missing the (admittedly heavy-handed) humour, Variety magazine described the video as “so narcissistic and self-referential that one could spend 5,000 words unspooling it”. Fans were more forgiving, cheering Swift as she turned the tables on her detractors. “Iconic. Perfect. You destroyed the haters,” wrote Natalia Kozanecka, while Alex Goldschmidt said “congratulations in advance” for winning all of next year’s MTV Awards. One caveat to Swift’s streaming success is that, on Spotify at least, interest in her comeback single dropped over the weekend. According to publiclyavailable data, Look What You Made Me Do was streamed 5.43 million times on Saturday - a drop of 2.48 million. By contrast, Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You (which previously held the one-day streaming record) saw its streaming tally increase in its second 24 hours on the platform.

I didn’t have a choice — I had to make music all the time. Glad I changed the medal colour: Sindhu
HYDERABAD, Aug 29 (PTI): Shrugging off the disappointment of losing the epic final, former bronze medallist P V Sindhu today said she is happy she could at least change the colour of the medal by bagging a
silver at the World Championship. Sindhu went down fighting 19-21 22-20 20-22 to Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in a nail-biting marathon summit clash on Sunday that lasted for an hour and 50 minutes at the Emirates Arena at Glasgow. “After the final match, I felt upset but I thought ‘never mind’. I thought it is over now; from next day it was normal,” said Sindhu, who twice won bronze in the 2013 and 2014 editions, told reporters here after returning home. “It is one of the best after Rio (Olympics). World Championship is something
different. It was bronze earlier. I am happy that I changed the colour to silver,” she added. Ta l k in g a b o u t t he World Championships final, the Olympic silver medallist said: “It was tiring mentally and physically. You think you have to get a point (any way) she (Nozomi Okuhara of Japan)was also tired. It was not my day.” Asked if a new trend of longer duration matches emerged in badminton, she replied in the affirmative. “Definitely, it is not going to be easy any more. We have to fight for each point. Anything can happen (in the match),” she said.

Sharapova stuns Halep on return to Grand Slam
Ninth-seeded Venus Williams, making her 19th appearance at the Open, has a slim chance of reaching No. 1 at age 37. She began her tournament with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win over Viktoria Kuzmova, a 19-year-old qualifier playing her first main-draw match on the WTA Tour. No. 5 Caroline Wozniacki, also in the hunt for No. 1, had an easier time, beating the qualifier Mihaela Buzarnescu, 6-1, 7-5.
Maria Sharapova saw off Simona Halep on her dramatic return to Grand Slam action.
New York, Aug 29 (IANS): Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova knocked out No.2 seed Simona Halep of Romania in a three-set thriller to advance into the second round of the US Open at Flushing Meadows. It was Sharapova’s first Grand Slam match since a quarter-finals loss to Serena Williams in last year’s Australian Open, when she tested positive for the newly banned heart drug meldonium. After serving a 15-month doping ban, the former World No.1 Sharapova returned in April but the French Open snubbed Sharapova
for a wildcard entry and she missed Wimbledon with a thigh injury. Only a handful of points separated the pair as Sharapova, into the year’s final Grand Slam on a wildcard, overcame a second-set letdown to outhit Halep 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 after the marathon two hours and 44 minutes match. In the first set, both players were struggling in respective serves, Sharapova had three breaks, one more than Halep, to take the opening set. After leading by a set and 4-1 in the second, the Russian star showed some fatigue and rust, dropping
five games in a row. But in the third, Sharapova regained control by going ahead 3-0, using her power to keep two-time French Open runner-up Halep under pressure. After that, she never looked back. Sharapova hit 60 winners on the night, four times as many as her opponent, to extend her winning record against Halep to 7-0. Meanwhile, Muguruza opened play at Arthur Ashe Stadium with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Varvara Lepchenko. But Muguruza has never advanced past the second round at the U.S. Open, so she is keeping her expectations low.

Sri Lanka skipper Kapugedera doubtful for 4th ODI Colombo, Aug 29 (IANS): Sri Lanka standin captain Chamara Kapugedera’s participation has been thrown into doubt after he aggravated a back injury during the previous cricket match against India on Sunday. “I was talking to the physio and he (Kapugedera) hasn’t been ruled out quite yet,” cricket manager Asanka Gurusinha was quoted as saying by espncricinfo on Tuesday. “He’s being treated. Only five or six guys are training tonight, so anyway we gave him a break. We’ll most probably look at it tomorrow (Wednesday) at training tomorrow afternoon. If he doesn’t train tomorrow then definitely he is out,” he added. Kapugedera has not trained since the third OneDay International (ODI) where he was nursing a stiff back but had batted and fielded in that game. The final call on his involvement will be taken in 24 hours, it has been learnt. “I think when he went into bat, it got worse, we’ll just have to wait further for the physio to tell us what’s going on.” Gurusinha said. Kapugedara will become the fifth Sri Lanka batsman to become unavailable if he cannot make the final XI.

Warner, Smith put visitors on top vs B’desh DHAKA, Aug 29 (Agencies): Opener David Warner hit 75 not out Tuesday as Australia stayed in a position of dominance after Bangladesh set a 265-run target in the first Test. At the end of Day 3, Australia reached 109-2 and needs 156 more runs to register only its third victory in the sub-continent in the last decade. Australia captain Steven Smith, unbeaten on 25, gave Warner good support on the tricky wicket. Warner started rapidly, hitting two fours off off-spinner Mehidy Hasan in the first over. But Hasan then dismissed Matt Renshaw for 5. Left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan had taken Usman Khawaja (1), forcing him to continue his dismal form in the sub-continent as he top-edged to deep backward square leg after trying to play a sweep shot. Warner, on 14, survived a tough chance when he edged to first slip off Shakib Al Hasan’s delivery. Warner hit 11 fours and one six, facing only 96 balls. helped Australia claw back into the game when Bangladesh was in charge. Left-arm spinner Ashton Agar contributed with 2-55. Lyon broke through in the sixth over, dismissing nightwatchman Taijul Islam for 4 after Bangladesh resumed at 45-1. He then dismissed Imrul Kayes (2) with a delivery that carried extra bounce. Pat Cummins gave the vital breakthrough just after lunch, winning a video review against Tamim Iqbal,
who was caught behind. Tamim sent the ball across the rope eight times in his 155-ball 78. It was his second half-century in the match after his 71 in the first innings. Lyon then got the better of Al Hasan (5), who tried to clear the boundary but holed it out to cover. Mushfiqur Rahim stalled Australia’s progress with support from Sabbir Rahman. Rahim was then run out after scoring 41 off 114. R a h i m ’s d i s m i s s a l

‘India football boom waiting to happen’
Zurich, Aug 29 (IANS): FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Tuesday said he reckoned FIFA Under-17 World Cup hosts India have plenty of room to develop their football and awaits a boom in the sport. “Although football has been making considerable strides in the country for years now, there is a unanimous sense that the room for growth is still of gigantic proportions. India is a football boom waiting to happen: it is simply a matter of investing in development -- and, more importantly, doing so in a wise and effective manner,” the 47-yearold wrote in FIFA 1904 magazine. With exactly 37 days left for the World Cup to kick-off, Infantino believes India is laying a foundation for revolution of the sport in the country. “Today, as we count down towards the kick-off
Gianni Infantino
of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in October, India is fortunate enough to have this youth tournament as a valuable spotlight shining right over its development plan,” Infantino said. “With the ‘Mission 11 Million’, which is taking football to school across the whole country, India has been laying the foundation for a true revolution.
