Asserting that the decision to take such a huge amount from the RBI reserves will have “catastrophic” consequences, the Congress alleged that the government was pushing the economy towards bankruptcy and an economic emergency. BJP countered these charges, saying the money is being used for national interest. DIMAPUR, AUG 27 (NPN): In a boost to regional air connectivity under UDAN scheme, Aviation ministry has assured Nagaland Governor, R.N. Ravi that flights to three sectors from Dimapur toGuwahati, Imphal and Dibrugarh would be made operational by October next.

Informing this in a press note, PRO to Nagaland Governor said Ravi met Union Civil Aviation minister, Hardeep Singh Puri Tuesday at New Delhi and raised the issue of air connectivity of Nagaland with the country and the North East region.

Ravi had requested the minister to help early operationalization of Dimapur–Guwahati, Dimapur-Imphal and Dimapur-Dibrugarh air services under UDAN scheme.

Accordingly, the minister directed the concerned officials of the ministry and airlines and assured the Governor that the flight services for these sectors will begin by October this year. Ravi thanked the minister for his prompt action.

NEW DELHI, AUG 27 (PTI): The Supreme Court Tuesday extended till tomorrow protection from arrest granted to former finance minister P Chidambaram in the INX Media money laundering case.

panna said it would hear the arguments of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Chidambaram’s two petitions, including the challenge to remand orders, on Wednesday.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Chidambaram, filed an application

seeking direction to the ED to produce the transcripts of the questioning conducted on December 19 last year and January 1 and January 21 this year in the case.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for ED, said he would like to reply to the fresh application during the course of his arguments. The transcripts will show whether Chidambaram was evasive during his questioning, as alleged by the ED, Sibal said.

He also told the bench that the ED cannot place documents in the court randomly and “behind the back” for seeking Chidambaram’s custody.

“They are just producing documents at random and saying this is part of the case diary,” Sibal said, adding, “They cannot place the documents behind the back and seek custody of accused.”

appearing for Chidambaram, referred to the constitutional and legal provisions and said that fundamental right of citizens under Article 21 (right to life and personal liberty) cannot be suspended. Singhvi argued that the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) was amended in 2009 whereas the allegations in the case are of 2007-2008.

“You try and paint a person as a kingpin when these alleged offences did not exist at that time,” he told the court during the arguments which will continue in the post lunch session.

The apex court had on Monday extended till Tuesday the protection from arrest given to Chidambaram in the INX Media money laundering case lodged by the ED. Chidambaram was the Union minister for finance as also home during the UPA-I and UPA-II government from 2004 to 2014.

D I M A P U R , AU G 2 7 (NPN): Land Owners’ Union (LOU) has served a seven-day deadline on the general manager (GM) NST department to appoint grade IV as per the agreement dated March 30, 1968, failing which they would lock up general manager (GM) office and business establishment within the department jurisdiction of Wokha indefinitely.

In an ultimatum, LOU chairman Phyanyamo Murry and secretary Yankhosao Murry said they had served one month period for appointment of (IV grade), but the department failed to address the issue. After the expiry of the memorandum, the union said AGM office Wokha was locked on April 29, 2019 as a mark of protest. It was observed that the LSC was running smooth-

ly so far and there was a short interaction with the jail authority about the key grievances of the jail.

Joint site inspection at NH-61 DIMAPUR: A joint site inspection for reassessment of damaged properties for widening of existing single/intermediate land road from Km 83 to Km 101 on NH-61 (New-02) will be carried out by Wokha district administration and PWD (National Highways) starting from September 2.

‘Peace Award 2019’ nominations begins DIMAPUR: Peace Channel (PC) has called for nomination of those individuals who have made exceptional contributions in peace building and related issues in Nagaland for the 12th Peace Channel Award.

A press release by KCK mass media cell stated that, the novel is on domestic violence which portrays the vicious cycle of violence and how it continues and extends to the lives of children as they become adults. It narrates the lives and experiences of a mother and daughter as domestic abuse victims. Dr. Eastern Kire stated that the book was a story not just of violence, but a cycle of violence and the struggle to understand the kind of woman who repeatedly becomes its victim.

Smriti stated that 30,000 people from Meghalaya will be eligible for skill development programmes under the Samarth scheme of the Ministry of Textiles.

Nongpoh (Meghalaya), Aug 27 (IANS): Textiles Minister Smriti Zubin Irani here on Monday said the central government was committed to supplement all the endeavours of the Meghalaya government in the development of the textile sector.

Irani was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Integrated Textiles Tourism Complex here, the headquarters of the Ri Bhoi district, in presence of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.

Stating that 30,000 people from Meghalaya will be eligible for skill development programmes under the Samarth scheme of the

Ministry of Textiles, She said Rs 8 crore has already been sanctioned for skill development of 7,200 Meghalaya people, in the textile sector.

Under the handicraft sector, Irani said the government had created a identity card called ‘Pehchaan’ to help the artisan avail benefits, including free tool kits for people coming from economically challenged backgrounds.

Over 3,000 Meghalaya people had already applied for the programme, she said.

As Meghalaya is one of the hubs of ‘ahimsa’ silk, Irani urged the Meghalaya government to utilise this

capacity of the state and to promote the brand worldwide. “The sericulture sector stands to benefit immensely from the branding of the ahimsa silk,” she said.

Sangma said the Integrated Textiles Tourism Complex would not only benefit farmers and artisans but also boost the tourism sector.

“The complex will offer opportunity for tourists seeking unique experiences through leisure activities revolving around handloom and textile production. This innovative project will go a long way in ensuring that both the textile and the tourism sector develops,” he said.

BJP protests Status quo to be maintained along Mizoram’s disputed Assam-Mizoram border CADC rules Hailakandi (Assam), ship at Kachurthal near the Aizawl, Aug 27 (PTI): The BJP unit of Mizoram’s Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) staged a protest in front of the council’s office in Chawngte to protest against Chakma Autonomous District Council (Land and Revenue) Rules, 2019.

Agitators set fire to the copies of the Rules on Monday, a statement issued by state BJP unit said.

“There are certain provisions in the Rules which are against the interest of the residents of the area.

The BJP sees it a policy of the executive committee to snatch people’s lands,” the statement issued on Tuesday said.

The BJP said there were no land lease and ceiling provisions in the CADC Land Revenue and Settlement Act, 2002 which safeguarded the lands of the residents of the area.

The council’s executive committee headed by Chief Executive Member RM Chakma of the Mizo National Front passed the Rules on August 21 during the monsoon session of the council with 17 votes in favour and seven votes against it, the release said.

“All seven opposition BJP members of district council voted against the Rules as the party found it to be a threat to permanent residents of the district council,” it said.

Arunachal to develop roads under CM Plan Itanagar, Aug 27 (PTI): Arunachal Pradesh government will develop all roads under the Public Works Department (PWD) in the state, officials said on Tuesday.

All roads under the PWD would be developed under a five-year plan Chief Minister Comprehensive State Road Plan 201924 -, the officials said.

“All the arterial roads in district headquarters, ADC headquarters will be connected by major district road category and majority of the ADC and CO headquarters will be connected by all-weather other district road category by the year 2024,” they said. The eighth session of the 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly which commenced on Monday was adjourned sine die.

Aug 27 (PTI): Officials of Assam’s Hailakandi and neighbouring Kolasib district of Mizoram have decided to maintain status quo along the inter-state border which has been tense during the past few months, an official release said here on Tuesday.

Deputy commissioners, superintendents of police and forest officials of both the districts attended the meeting held at Bairabi in Kolasib district on Monday. Both sides discussed the prevailing law and order situation in the area and agreed to maintain status quo along the inter-state border, the release said.

Dilip Kumar Paul, a senior BJP MLA from Silchar in Barak Valley, made the claim while delivering a speech in his constituency on Saturday during a cultural event.

Priyanka slams govt on MCF corporatisation

RAE BARELI (UP), AUG 27 (PTI): Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday lashed out at the Centre for its proposed corporatisation of the rail coach factory in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli district, claiming that it would eventually lead to the unit’s privatisation.

“The central government wants to mercilessly corporatise the rail coach factory,” Priyanka Gandhi said while addressing the Modern Coach Factory (MCF) employees who are on an agitation against the Union government’s recent corporatisation plan. “What does it mean? It means that after corporatisation, the next step will be giving it to the government’s industrialist friends, leading to its privatisation,” she told the employees, some of whom were donning black T-shirts with the slogan: ‘Revoke corporatisation of MCF’.

Workers in the factory have been staging a protest ever since the Ministry of Railways has envisaged corporatisation of its seven production units and associated workshops under one entity called the Indian Railway Rolling Stock Company.

Over 2,000 people work in the factory besides others in the surrounding areas, she said, claiming that the factory was running in profit now and its production was double than its capacity.

Setting good examples

E

very society has its own set of problems and the difference between a progressive and regressive society is about how problems are addressed. Much has been written about the downtrend in Nagaland involving corruption in all levels of society and the inability or absence of corrective measures. One of the oft repeated phrase is the lack of good examples. When it comes to following good examples, perhaps people, church, young people, the bureaucracy and elected leaders of Nagaland need to seriously reflect over the present and seriously note the downward momentum. Naga society is pressed on all sides by isms and hegemonic tendencies. The ordinary people feel helpless and frustration among them is growing. When elected representatives themselves exhibit moral responsibility, it only further adds to the efforts of good governance among the bureaucrats. In politics of probity, politicians in power and those not in power should accept the fact that they are responsible for maintaining people’s trust.

Money power has grown to monstrous dimension due to the effect of expensive elections. Politicians who have been elected through merit and experience with a clean mandate, understand that they have to perform. It would be helpful to learn a lesson from the Mizos who have overtaken Nagaland in many areas because they possess a “unique” feature – a sense of commitment and responsibility to society. Mizo society may be homogenous but that is not the reason why the people hold transparency and accountability at high value. The influence of the Mizo church dominates the lives of the people. There was a report about how a church in Mizoram, despite dire need for funds for church building, returned back money to a donor member because it was sourced through unethical means. Later, when newspaper reports disclosed, that the money was part of the amount siphoned off. That itself demands character and courage not to compromise. A society without conscience and without adherence to the tenets of faith, cannot provide justice and opportunities for its people. These are essential ingredient of the faith which provides ingredients for effective governance. A transparent and accountable system brings participation of all citizens in having equal opportunities to participate in decision making , either directly or through legitimate intermediate institutions that represent their interests.

Governance also means rule of law, transparency, responsiveness, consensus orientation, equity, effectiveness and efficiency and accountability. Providing efficient service, today assumes importance in the global context as it is an indication of the ability of the system to promote true progress when so much has been made available within the frame of the system.

Unless some drastic changes are imposed, any plan for progress will only regress and perhaps that is what has been the manifestation. That is the lesson to churches that have made building construction as their god. The Mizo church has been instrumental in creating a very high level of consciousness on social and religious values in the state. Unless the church leaders, who claim to be privy to the biblical tenets show the way, obviously, the laity or ordinary members cannot be expected do otherwise. This is a good example that is needed in Nagaland today.

The most difficult person to deal with is the one who has the prideful self-satisfaction of a past experience, but is not working that experience out in his everyday life. If you say you are sanctified, show it. The experience must be so genuine that it shows in your life. Beware of any belief that makes you self-indulgent or self-gratifying; that belief came from the pit of hell itself, regardless of how beautiful it may sound.

Your theology must work itself out, exhibiting itself in your most common everyday relationships. Our Lord said, “…unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:20). In other words, you must be more moral than the most moral person you know. You may know all about the doctrine of sanctification, but are you working it out in the everyday issues of your life? Every detail of your life, whether physical, moral, or spiritual, is to be judged and measured by the standard of the atonement by the Cross of Christ.

Western Sumi Hoho’s ‘Operation Salvage’ T he Wester n Sumi Hoho (WSH) is of the firm opinion that civil society plays the most important role in a democracy and more so in the Naga society which from the ancestral age has been practicing the purest form of democracy. For the Nagas in today’s time with a clean cut history but confused with the present, it is the civil society which has to be the bridge by playing that definite role to not only pressure the government of the day but to the society itself which it represents. It is only in doing so that civil society can redeem itself and bring about any semblance of the desired change that is much needed in the Naga society today.

Yes, it is the duty of the civil society to highlight the plight of the people in order to compel the government to take remedial measures.

However, the kernel of truth remains in the fact that it is only when the people are receptive to change, and by having changed, can any remedial measures that the government undertake show any result. It is here where the real work of civil society begins – to educate and re-educate the people to become receptive to change and thereby truly change, and not just by championing the cause of the people for change which is infinite.

The Western Sumi Hoho is committed to this change and therefore is touring all the areas under its jurisdiction for this very purpose, and also, at the same time, get to know the pulse of the people, first hand.

The Wester n Sumi Hoho have no illusions other than the truth that change in our western Sumi society can come about only if we rivet back to our roots and rebuilt our work culture in order to redeem ourselves from the culture of dependency and striving for avenues of easy earning and living. It is all so evident today that the root cause of all the evils in our society is the trend of striving for easy earning and living.

And this trend has not even spared the church. The fall back option of our students after everything fails (and that includes the option of joining the underground) seems to be theology as it offers the next best means

of easy earning.

The Wester n Sumi Hoho maintains that the main reason for unemployment is the wrong education and thinking in the society that there are no job avenues while others, non-Nagas, think there are so much job opportunities in Nagaland. It is so very true that government jobs are the most stable and the easiest source of income, but the stark reality is that all government departments in the state are oversaturated with employees. It definitely is time for western Sumis, young and old, to change the mindset. It definitely is time for we, the western Sumis, to seriously dedicate more time and resources towards work options available in the private sector. For far too long we have undermined the importance and significance of work in sectors such as farming, teaching, journalism, entrepreneurship and other non-archetypical private jobs. The Western Sumi Hoho today takes it as its bounden duty to foray and sincerely attempt to inculcate within the people the work culture and the dignity of labor which is so very missing in our society today.

Nagas in general today have to understand that Article 371(A) is proving to be a double edged sword. Our pioneering fathers fought and sacrificed for it and it was meant for the good of the future generations. It was meant to be a single edged sword to preserve our culture – the culture of work.

But today, having confined acquiring of knowledge only into classrooms and deviating from the informal Naga traditional education which automatically prepared every Naga individual to attain full humanity, what was meant to be our advantage is turning out to be our disadvantage. It is because the education which was oral and oriented towards the practical is no more there.

The lessons then taught were according to the needs and expectations of the community and hence every individual was accountable.

Each family and village was solely responsible for the education of its young men and women. It was the way of life which encompassed every aspect of the socio, cultural, economic and po-

litical life of the Nagas. The learnings were not theoretical or academic but vocational and practical oriented covering every dimensions of life. Everything about our culture revolved around work and moral character, and therefore thrived. It is the primary objective of the western sumi hoho to bring about an awareness, and thereby change, in all its area of jurisdiction as to this anomaly in the present lifestyle of today and therefore the need to preserve and start practicing our real culture to meet the challenges of today’s time.

The erosion of Naga work culture can best be exemplified by our total failure to maintain and sustain even the one and only big industry that we have – or rather had. The Tuli paper mill.

We failed simply because we forsaked work culture and opted for easy money.

The greater good was at stake but it did not prick our conscience. Our pioneering fathers never expected this of us. They had the vision that the work culture of the Nagas would be channeled into modern industry, and therefore, demanded and established the Tuli paper mill as a peace package after the signing of the ceasefire on September 6, 1964.

We could not sustain even what we had and yet talk about lack of avenues. Rajiv Gandhi, during his prime ministership, gave Tuli mill a second chance through the setting up of BIFR (Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction) in Jan. 1987 which kept alive the paper mill but was dissolved by the Narendra Modi government in Dec of 2016 as per provision of Insolvency and Bankruptcy code. Since then the only industry of Nagaland has been reduced to cutting bamboo chips for paper mills in Assam. We were never satisfied with an egg a day and therefore killed and ate the mother hen.

There is much talk these days about the ILP, RIIN and the IBI issue. The Western Sumi Hoho has made it sufficiently clear that it supports the government in all of these issues. Naga tribes are indigenous and Sumis – be it Northern, Southern, Eastern, or Western – are all one of the 16 tribes and will always remain indigenous.

As for the IBI issue, it is very

important and more so for Dimapur and the Western Sumis. The Western Sumi Hoho is of the opinion that civil societies in Nagaland cannot afford to hunt with the hound and run with the hare. Evicting non-locals or the IBIs from Nagaland is not a problem because they can be evicted anytime if the Naga people want them evicted. The only problem lies within ourselves. How prepared are we?

Let us be pragmatic.

Are Nagas prepared to shovel stone chips or even the easier gravel sand in the sun?

Do we have the expertise or the spine to respond to every plumbing, electrical, mechanical, or technical need that is just a call away for a nominal fee, and which we take for granted? Are we prepared to take the plough and work the field in our Dimapur sun? Do we know the where withals of conducting business and offering services at the best price and convenience of the consumers? Do we know how to bake or lay bricks or the difference between an external and an internal combustion engine? Are the IBIs taking away our jobs in road construction or sanitation even though we are prepared to work the same?

Forget about digging, do we even know how deep is our well and when and how to clean it? The list goes on. We simply do not have answers.

And it is the answers which the Western Sumi Hoho is concerned about, and not about raising questions.

Nagas today do not have answers as much as the people of Uganda had in the 1970s. In 1972, against the backdrop of Indophobia where the local Ugandans thought that the Indians were taking over jobs and business, the Government of Uganda ordered the expulsion of all the South Asian people accusing them of commercial malpractice.

President Idi Amin ordered and defended the expulsion by arguing that he was giving Uganda back to the ethnic Ugandans.

However, after the expulsion, Ugandans were so ill prepared that normal life literally came to a standstill in Uganda and Uganda suffered the poorest growth rate in the whole of improvised Africa. It is altogether another story that Ugandans

had to welcome South East Asians, chiefly the Indians, back to Uganda in order to revive their economy.

Nagas today boast of a literacy rate which is nearly at 80% and the western sumi people too have contributed to the high literacy rate in the state. However, instead of being a blessing it has turned out to be a bane, if not a curse. It should have humbled us to value the virtue of our culture, but instead, it has stiffened our neck and spine. It has made us modern but certainly not civilized.

We have miserably failed to understand that literacy does not necessarily mean ‘educated’. Ordinary lay Naga youths today are being swayed by the easy living culture of the pompous in the name of Naga sovereignty. Educated Nagas have laid waste their education by opting to forget that being educated means never forgetting our roots which is to eat by the sweat of our brow.

This is the basic fundamental which our Christian faith demand of us – from the old testament to the new. We completely contradict it by our acceptance of the easy and yet claim to be better Christians. Is not the Church silent on this issue?

Where does that leave the people when faith itself is questioned? Where then is the saving grace? The saving grace for the people can come only from civil society. And this is where civil society leaders come into direct focus because it is in the interest of the people to have a leader who had to be there and not because he wanted to be there.

Kohima may be the capital of Nagaland but Dimapur is its soul. It is the soul which has to be kept well for the development of the body. The WSH is not shying away from the fact that it more of the Sumi people who are in the news for all the wrong reasons in Dimapur. Be it in crimes such as extortions, intimidations, kidnapping, vehicle thefts, counterfeit, peddling drugs or the liquor business, Sumis are at the front and never behind. And it is because of this section of criminals that the whole community is literally being tainted, categorized and labeled. The main worry is that criminalization of our

society is increasing with each passing day as more and more are being lured into this criminal web. The interest of the whole community and of the future generation is being compromised simply because of the unchecked rise of criminalization in the society.

The WSH understands that it is the socio-economic problems that have created the environment under which all these illegal activities thrive. The Hoho therefore intends to focus its attention on the social environment and play a pro-active role in order to check this anomaly in our society.

It is a tragedy that the valued custom of our ancestral tradition of according status and freedom to our women folk is being so abused today. Nothing can go more pervert than our Naga women becoming prostitutes.

We are people with a history of the tradition where much premium is particularly placed on the chastity of women. The premium that Sumi people accords to our women have been totally negated by our women themselves, and this cannot be tolerated and remain unchecked anymore.

Our boys with their empty pockets no more gets the attention of our girls who all have become materialistic, and to maintain the lifestyle, sleeps with any Tom, Dick, or Harry. Our boys need to start working and earn by the sweat of the brow, and our girls need to stop working their flesh to earn.

Addressing this moral degradation is one of the main issue that the WSH has on its agenda. This is a fundamental issue which is a grave concern for all the Nagas and can only be checked with the cooperation of all.

What is the use of a body makeover if the soul is lost. We have to first salvage the moral depravity into which Nagas have fallen deep. To unite the Nagas into one formidable force, instill confidence in their people for self-determination, help them stand on their own feet, and mobilize everyone for nation-building. But the question is: Are today’s Naga national workers willing to live up to the people’s expectations as true nationalists would do?

He mentioned that that Union Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC) had entrusted Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE), Dehradun to prepare DPR for rejuvenation of 13 major rivers in the country through forestry interventions. These 13 rivers include Beas, Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi, Sutlej, Yamuna, Brahmaputra, Mahanadi, Narmada, Krishna, Godavari, Cauvery and Luni belonging to nine river basins.

He said a DPR preparation for rejuvenation of the Ganga through forestry interventions under Namami Gange programme of Union Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, which had already been prepared by ICFRE in 2016 and was highly appreciated at national as well as international level.

Das mentioned that Rain Forest Research Institute (RFRI), Jorhat under ICFRE was accordingly instructed to prepare DPR for rejuvenation of the Brahmaputra through forestry interventions. He said the broad objectives of the project included review and assessment of the existing situation of river

DIMAPUR, AUG 27 (NPN): A State-level consultation meeting on preparation of detailed project report (DPR) for rejuvenation of river Brahmaputra through forestry interventions in Nagaland was held at the conference hall of chief secretary’s office, Civil Secretariat in Kohima on Tuesday.

In his address, chief secretary Temjen Toy remarked that many Nagas did not realise that water crisis was becoming more and more alarming. Rainfall had been declining over the years, only the intensity had increased by way of cloudbursts and other weather phenomena.

Against such a backdrop, he said “we have the Brahmaputra Rejuvenation Project coming our way and Nagaland is an important part of this project.”

Speaking on the nine policies of the project, he said it encompassed many important issues, including adaptation policies to tackle climate change that would involve villagers and land owners of the State.

According to DIPR, Scientist- E & Project Coordinator, Dr Dhruba J Das gave a power-point presentation where he stated that the primary objective of the meeting was to sensitise and ensure better cooperation among stakeholders and

Bengaluru, Aug 27 (Agencies): The Indian economy likely expanded at its slowest pace in more than five years in the AprilJune quarter, driven by weak investment growth and sluggish demand, according to economists polled by Reuters.

New Delhi, Aug 27 (PTI): In a huge push for women hygiene, the government on Tuesday slashed price of sanitary napkins sold from its Jan Aushadhi Kendras to just Re 1 per piece from Rs 2.50 earlier.

The biodeg radable sanitary napkin ‘Suvidha’ sold in a pack of four are available at the subsidised price in designated centres across the country.

“I think that this is one of the greatest achievements that has been done by the Prime Minister Modi for the poor people across the country,” Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers D V Sadananda Gowda said in his address here.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, PM Narendra Modi had assured that within 100 days poor women of the country will be provided sanitary napkins at Re 1.

Now, that has become a reality, he added. In similar vein, Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Mansukh Mandaviya said the government has today launched oxo-biodegradable sanitary napkins at Re 1.

These napkins under the brand name Suvidha will be available at 5,500 Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the country. Empowerment of women has been a key initiative of Modi government, he added.

The G7 aid offer was announced by French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday.

Rejecting the aid, Bolsonaro on late Monday said Brazil was not a “colonial territory” and that there was “a hidden agenda” behind Macron’s offer.

Brazil’s Foreign Minister Ernesto Araujo tweeted on Monday: “No one needs a ‘new initiative for

the Amazon’ as Macron suggests when there are already several mechanisms under the UN Climate Convention to fund the fight against deforestation.”

In a joint news conference Monday with Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, Macron announced that G7 countries would allocate $22 million in emergency funding to help with efforts to prevent fires in the Amazon rainforest. He also said France would provide military support in the region to fight the fires.

according to the country’s space research agency, Inpe. Macron last week described the fires as an “international crisis” and called for an emergency meeting of G7 countries regarding the fires.

In an interview with French public broadcaster France 2 at the conclusion of the G7 summit in Biarritz, Macron said Bolsonaro’s attitude towards deforestation could derail ratification of the free trade agreement between the EU and the Mercosur group.

“We respect your sovereignty. It’s your country,” said Macron, before insisting that the Amazon fires are a global issue.

“The Amazon forest is a subject for the whole planet… We cannot allow you to destroy everything,” he added.

In response to this, the Brazilian Foreign Minister said: “The efforts made by some political currents to extrapolate real environmental issues by transforming them into a fabricated ‘crisis’ as a pretext for introducing mechanisms for external control of the Amazon are very evident.

“Brazil will not accept any initiative that involves relativizing sovereignty over its territory, whatever the pretext and whatever the guise.”

An k a r a , A u g 2 7 (IANS): Turkey on Tuesday received the second batch of the equipment of Russiamade S-400 defence system, the country’s Defence Ministry announced here.

“The second batch of components of S-400 missile defence system has arrived at Murted Air Base near Ankara,” the Ministry said in a statement on Twitter.

“The delivery process will continue for around one month,” it added.

The first batch of S-400 defence system was delivered from Russia to Turkey in July and com-

pleted on July 25.

Turkey signed a contract with Russia in April 2017 to purchase the advanced S-400 systems.

Tensions between the US and Turkey have escalated ever since over the deal as Washington claims that the S-400 system would be incompatible with the NATO system and may expose its confidential military information to Russia.

Washington has repeatedly threatened to halt Turkey’s purchase of F-35 fighters if Ankara goes ahead with the delivery of the S-400s.

ruk Padma Karpo School in Ladakh, popularly known as ‘Rancho’s School’, is delighted about the fame the Aamir Khan-starrer ‘3 Idiots’ has brought to it, but the 18year-old institution does not want the Bollywood connect to overshadow its original identity and values.

The local people still call it Druk Padma Karpo School and they take a lot of pride in the Buddhist tradition and philosophy with which it was created, principal Stanzin Kunzang said. The institution in this cold desert of Ladakh imparts world-class education to children of this Himalayan region, including those of nomadic tribes, she said.

Like Kunzang, teachers and students of the school in Shey, about 15 km from Leh city, want people to identify it as ‘Druk Padma Karpo School’ and not as ‘Rancho’s School’.

The school’s sprawling campus is designed like a Buddhist Mandala, and the main gate does not have the word Rancho. Only two big, polished wooden panels on either side of the gate show the name ‘Druk Padma Karpa School’ and the architect firm which built the institution.

“We are very happy about the fame the film ‘3 Idiots’ brought to our school, but

beyond a certain point, the crowd of tourists became practically unmanageable, as they would just try to wander in from all possible entry points to catch a glimpse of that famous ‘Rancho Wall’ as seen in the film, and click photos,” she said.

People need to understand that this is a school and the primary purpose of this place is to impart education in a proper atmosphere, Kunzang said, adding “tourist influx had made life difficult, and we have girl students as well, so safety is a concern too.”

The 2009 blockbuster was partly shot in the campus of the school which began in 2001.The wall of a building on its campus was featured in the closing of the film in which one of the characters, Chatur, tries to urinate on it but gets an electric shock as two kids dangle a wire with a bulb from the first floor.

While the original wall – the ‘iconic idiotic wall’ -- part of a building which was damaged in the 2010 flash floods still remains on the campus, the first floor, earlier made of bricks has been replaced with wooden structures typically used in Ladakh. Khan had visited the school once after the floods, Kunzang said.

The wall shows a dangling glowing bulb, a flying Himalayan crane, a rainbow behind the clouds. Students of class 6 and above are generally aware of this famed wall. Keeping in mind, the influx of tourists from all parts of India and few parts of the world, a duplicate wall has been created on the other side of the school in another area, with an iron mesh door separating the two sides, carrying a sign – ‘Private gate, no public thoroughfare’, so that no tourist can wander in the academic campus.

New Delhi, Aug 27 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday met newly crowned world champion P.V. Sindhu and wished luck to the ace shuttler for her future endeavours.

Sindhu on Sunday thrashed Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara 21-7, 21-7 in the final of the women’s singles event to become the first Indian to win gold in the BWF World Championships.

“India’s pride, a champion who has brought home a gold and lots of glory!

Too early to call for 2022 CWG boycott: Rijiju New Delhi, Aug 27 (PTI): Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju has played down the calls to boycott the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games over shooting’s exclusion, saying it is too early to take a decision of such magnitude.

“I told them to speak to the Commonwealth Games Federation officials and the organising committee of the

“If it (the decision) is not reviewed, we will see but the call for boycott at this point of time is too early. Certainly, boycott is not the solution but I will not give an opinion till I get the final outcome from the meeting between IOA and CGF officials,” he added.

Shooting has featured in every Commonwealth Games since 1966 with the exception of Edinburgh 1970. But in its Executive Board meeting in June, the CGF recommended the inclusion of three new sports while dropping shooting.

“In 10 months, we cannot produce new talents. We have identified existing talents and we have extended all technical resources and other support whatever is required,” he said. “...we are expecting better results than previous Olympics. But it is difficult to predict number of medals

because of the high standard of competition in Olympics.

My long-term preparation is for 2024 Paris and 2028 Los Angeles Olympics,” the minister added.

Rijiju also said that the government is open to the idea of hosting multi-sport events despite the bad press India got for alleged corruption in the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

“We are not averse to hosting any international event. Definitely it’s a matter of pride for any country to host the Olympics or Asian Games. We would be encouraging more international events because our dream is to host the Olympics someday,” he said.

“But before that we should be ready, we should be able to make the whole world understand that India is capable of hosting. It must be done at an appropriate time,” Rijiju asserted.

DDCA to rename Feroz Shah Kotla as Arun Jaitley Stadium

The ceremony to rename Feroz Shah Kotla will be done on September 2.

New Delhi, Aug 27 (IANS): The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) has decided to rename the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium as the Arun Jaitley Stadium after the former DDCA President and BCCI Vice-President.

The ceremony to rename the historic stadium will be done on September 12 while a stand will also be named after India skipper Virat Kohli.

DDCA took to Twitter to announce the same: “Kotla to be renamed as Arun Jaitley Stadium. The renaming of Delhi’s famous

cricket venue as Arun Jaitley Stadium will take place on September 12 at a function where a Stand of the ground will be named after India captain Virat Kohli.”
