ment aided private schools beyond Match 31, 2019. In a representation addressed to the minister school education, the ANGPTA president, James Ruokuoselhou; vice president, T.Along Changkiri; Treasurer, Akaho Yepthomi, and information secretary, Imchanuchet Jamir, opined that the requisite 50% marks at higher secondary level for admission to D.El.Ed. course for in-service teachers must be scrapped as the department had never applied this criterion while giving appointment to the elementary teachers. ANGPTA pointed out that till around the year 2000, the government allowed people with matriculate and below qualifications to be appointed as primary teachers in some of the backward areas of the state. In this regard, the asso-
ciation maintained its stand that all the primary teachers currently serving under the department of school education should be grouped under the same category and be allowed to undergo the D.EL.Ed. training within the stipulated time period. ANGPTA also stated that the condition to complete higher secondary level course through NIOS concurrently with the professional course must not be applied in Nagaland. Further, asserting that number of untrained teachers was very high and cannot be accommodated for trainings at the SCERT and DIETs within the stipulated time, the association appealed for making alternative arrangements by means of identifying and empowering few selected EBRCs in each districts to function as D.El.Ed. centres.

The theme of the rally was ‘War Against Corruption: the battle to reclaim the land”. Braving the scorching summer heat, school students in uniforms also turned out in large numbers. The rally also witnessed active participation of youths holding placards which read-- “Modi save Nagaland, Tinku the real chief minister of Nagaland”, “Nagaland land of chors”, “Where is Pillai now? and enable people from small-towns to take their first flights. While announcing the scheme, minister of state for civil aviation Jayant Sinha said that at present there are only close to 200 commercial helicopter services, and in a country like India, it has the potential to go up to 2,000. If the scheme is successfully implemented, the air connectivity to difficult terrains of Jammu and
Kashmir, North East India, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep will get a major push. The ministry has marked these regions under priority areas. The winners of the second round of bidding under UDAN are to be announced by November-end. The actual number of airports could increase, as helicopters are able to land in places other than airports and landing strips. Under the scheme, an operator is entitled to receive funds from the government in the form of viability gap funding (VGF) if a fixed number of seats on the flight are sold at a fare of up to Rs2,500. “We have increased the viability gap funding for helicopters. The way their flight time is calculated has also been made more realistic. We expect this to lead to improved connectivity in priority areas. The first round
of bidding was successful. Airlines have ordered 100 regional planes and we expect the second round to be even more interesting,” said aviation secretary RN Choubey. He added that airlines have ordered 100 regional planes so second round will be even more interesting. IndiGo has announced it plans to buy 50 ATR planes and SpiceJet has also signed a letter of intent to buy 50 Bombardier Q400 regional planes. Air India and SpiceJet are among airlines that have the biggest fleet of regional planes under this scheme. Five airlines, including Air India, SpiceJet, Turbo Megha, Air Odisha and Air Deccan, were allotted 128 routes to fly in the first round by March, but only 16 routes have been operationalised. The ministry claims that it is monitoring Air Odisha and Air Deccan and they should start flying by September-end.
chief was also witnessed in Delhi, Punjab and Rajasthan within a few hours of the pronouncement of judgement by the CBI court here in the 2002 case. CBI judge Jagdeep Singh held Ram Rahim guilty of rape in a case that was registered on the basis of an anonymous written complaint in 2002 that he had sexually exploited two female followers. Ram Chander Chhatrapati,
who ran a local daily Poora Sacch, was the journalist who exposed rapes of two women at Dera headquarters 15 years ago. Months after Chhatrapati published an anonymous letter giving details about how women were sexually harassed by Rahim at Sirsa ashram, he was shot from point-blank range outside his house on October 24, 2002. On the basis of the report, a case was registered against him in Dec 2002 by CBI on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The quantum of sentence against Rahim, who enjoys ‘Z’ category security, will be pronounced on August 28. Thousands of followers gathered near the Panchkula court and went on the rampage. His followers, ironically called ‘premis’ (who believe in love), unleashed violence and set afire a large number of vehicles, buildings and railway stations in
Panchkula. An advisory has been issued to all travelling to Haryana, Punjab, National Capital Region and Rajasthan.

Can’t give NPF party to political tourists, professional defectors: Dr. Shürhozelie
Correspondent KOHIMA, AUG 25 (NPN): NPF president, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, MLA on Friday asserted that the party cannot be given to the “political tourists who are professional defectors moving from place to place for comfort and enjoyment” and reminded that the NPF was a political party deeply rooted with the Naga society at all levels. Addressing the NPF Central Executive Council (CEC) emergency meeting here at its central office Kohima, Dr. Liezietsu assured that the party would cooperate with the will of the people in the event of any political settlement to the Naga issue, which was expected soon. However, if no solution is arrived by 2018, he said the NPF will form the government and the party would stand for stability and development. On dismissal of his government by Governor, Dr. Liezietsu said everything was pre-planned. Without giving the opportunity to put forth the, Dr. Liezietsu said his government was unconstitutionally dismissed. He further went on to question that NLA speaker, Dr. Imtiwapang Aier that in spite of being fully aware of the unconstitutional decision of the MLAs in appointing/ electing T.R. Zeliang as the whip, the speaker had recognized T.R. Zeliang as the whip on mere information

of support given by the dissident legislators. By doing so, Liezietsu said Dr. Imtiwapang had desecrated the high office/honorable chair of the Speaker. This will remain a black mark in the history of NLA, he said, adding “any further unconstitutional action of the Speaker will have its negative impact on his own political career.” He was optimistic that Speaker would “not compromise to the temporary gain of his brother in-law.” Acknowledging the past NLA Speakers of being impartial, Dr. Liezietsu said the State Assembly had maintained the record of being one of the most disciplined Houses in the entire country. Dr. Liezietsu further pointed out that the political detractors of the other group never hesitated to tell lies. It was unfortunate that few weak leaders had fallen prey to these cheap games, he added. Dr. Liezietsu said “the dissident group had tried to borrow one political party from Meghalaya State but that proposal was not agreed upon by few people. Thereby that attempt had failed while DPP which was earlier set up by one of their leaders was yet to be registered with ECI.” On the ongoing court cases, Dr. Liezietsu said though the rival group wanted to delay the cases time and again till next elec-

tion, they were yet to decide whether they would fight the elections on BJP or Congress ticket. He said none of those in the other group would be given NPF ticket for the next election. In his brief address, NPF legislator Yitachu said even if the 12 MLAs join the dissident group, they will not be able to dislodge the party as there were technical procedures to be followed. Referring to the disqualification petition filed by the dissident group, Yitachu said they had clearly admitted that the “whip should be appointed by the party”. To this, Yitachu said it was up to them “whether to return to party fold or face the consequences.” He said the dissident group, instead of attending office, have been holding frequent meetings since “they are worried.” Also speaking, NPF working president, Huskha
Yepthomi took a dig at Lok Sahba MP, Neiphiu Rio for wanting to become everything. He said Rio “wanted to be become chief minister, union minister, MP Lok Sabha, chief of DPP and now he wanted to become NPF president.” He said those who do not know the genesis of NPF wanted to destroy the party. Referring to the bile, he said the 12 MLAs were liked the 12 disciples of Christ who stood for the truth. NPF MLAs-- Vikheho Swu and C.L. John also addressed the meeting. Meanwhile, the meeting also adopted a 7-point resolution drafted by the resolution committee convenor, Pusazo Luruo, member secretary Sebastian Zumvu and members Renbemo Kikon and Hotoshe. Among the points, the CEC lauded the determination of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to find an honourable solution to the Naga political problem and also the efforts of the negotiating parties to bring a permanent solution to the protracted problem. The CEC reiterated the stand of the NPF that the solution should be inclusive of all stakeholders. It also expressed pain over the fact that the Naga people did not agitate when the Nagaland Governor, PB Acharya watched the desecration of the Constitution of India by NLA Speaker and installed the undemocratic government headed by
TR Zeliang. CEC said it was worried that this could be an indication that the Nagas were not satisfied with the present arrangement and provisions of the Constitution of India. CEC also condemned the imposters camped at the luxury hotel at Bayavü hills and urged the Election Commission not to take cognizance of such charades meant to usurp Constitutional and legal organization of the NPF headed by Dr Shürhozelie Liezietsu. CEC said it denounced the action of Lok Sabha MP, Neiphiu Rio, who had already formed his own political party Democratic Progressive Party but was also posing as the illegal and unheard of interim president of the dissident NPF group. CEC called upon the Nagas “to see through the joke being played on the public by this charlatan.” CEC appealed to all active and primary members of the NPF to stand steadfast behind the party and not to embark on any political misadventure. CEC also vehemently condemned the activities of unidentified elements out to create mischief in the State capital such as firing at Hotel Vivor and threatening government officials by entering into their residences. CEC extended sympathies to the family members affected by the unruly elements and appealed to all to abide by the laws of the land.

J’khand: Tribals hold police, officials hostage
High Court raps Kejriwal for appeal against expediting defamation suit
outsiders against entering, loitering or trying to settle in their territories. Tribal leaders also contend that the Constitution guarantees supreme executive and judicial powers to their gram sabhas, thereby making legislations passed by Parliament or state assembly legally untenable. Though the government withdrew the amendment bills following pressure from tribal groups and opposition parties, tribals refused to withdraw their anti-outsider campaign. Besides putting up the stone plaques, they erected barricades on roads leading to their villages – security features that the government
adjudged as illegal. On Thursday evening, Khunti DSP Ranvir Singh received information that the residents of Kalki Siladon and several neighbouring villages had installed barricades at their entrances. He immediately left for the spot with a small group of armed police personnel, and removed the structures. The tribals, however, refused to take the administrative action lying down. Within minutes, the team found itself surrounded by hundreds of agitated villagers – some of whom began pushing the policemen around. A distress call was made to the nearest police station, which immediately deployed a team of CRPF jawans – along with the sub-divisional officer and the circle officer – to the spot. But the crowd had multiplied to thousands by then, and the back-up team was overpowered too. Even superintendent of police Ashwini Kumar, who reached the spot an hour later, was detained. Around 2 am, DIG Homkar arrived at Khunti with more reinforcements. However, they could not proceed further because the villagers had barricaded the entire route leading up to
Kalki Siladon. After a few hours, he finally managed to initiate talks with the agitators. “We managed to get through to their leaders by early Friday morning. The situation is now under control, and the officials held hostage are now returning,” Homkar told HT. The tribals have reportedly put forth a number of demands, which police promised to accept if found legitimate. “We will do anything to secure the rights guaranteed to us by the Constitution. We are not afraid of the consequences,” a tribal leader said on the condition of anonymity. Hundreds of unofficial barricades – called pathalgadi in the local dialect – have come up in tribaldominated districts over the last four months. Thursday night’s incident served as a chilling reminder of the fate that met nine outsiders at the hands of frenzied tribal mobs in adjoining districts of the state earlier this year. The victims, accused of being child abductors, were allegedly spurred on by a tribal group called the Adivasi Mahasabha. Tribals account for 26% of Jharkhand’s population.
Efforts on to destroy Goa’s communal harmony: Parrikar
Priyanka admitted to hospital with dengue fever
Builders to approach GST council for clarification
Tribals in Jharkhand are miffed with the state government over an attempt to dilute two tenancy laws that guarantee their land rights. R a n c h i , AU G 2 5 (AGENCIES): Thousands of tribals armed with traditional weapons held several senior police and administrative officers hostage at Kanki Siladon, a tribal hamlet in Khunti district, through Thursday night. The district superintendent of police (SP), deputy superintendent of police (DSP), a couple of executive magistrates and at least 50 armed CRPF jawans were among those detained overnight. The tribals were demanding self-rule, besides a ban on outsiders entering their villages. The officials were released on Friday morning, after deputy inspector gen-
Panaji, Aug 25 (IANS): Less than a week after the Goa Church warned of a Nazi Germany like scenario in contemporary Goa and India, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Friday said that efforts were on to “destroy” the coastal state’s communal harmony. “So that inspite of a lot of efforts to destroy it (communal harmony) by some people, by trying to divide the society on communal lines, I think people know very well,” Parrikar told reporters here. Pa r r i k a r a l s o t o l d reporters at his ancestral home in Parra village, 20 km north of Panaji, that Ganesh Chaturthi was a festival for people of all religions in Goa and recalled fondly how he used to visit Catholic homes in the neighbourhood on Christmas Day. “In Goa, Ganesh Chaturthi is a festival of everyone, Hindu, Catholic, Muslim. Christmas is festival of everyone. It is also enjoyed. For example in this house, when I grew up we
eral (South Chhotanagpur) Amol V Homkar and Khunti deputy commissioner Manish Ranjan intervened. They reportedly accorded the agitated tribals a patient hearing before advising them against resorting to vigilantism. Tribals in the state have been agitating ever since the Raghubar Das government tried to amend the CNT and SPT Acts, two age-old legislations meant to protect their tenancy rights. Fearing that the government would try to take away their land, inhabitants of tribal settlements across Khunti, Gumla and Simdega districts have installed huge stone plaques and signboards that warn
Manohar Parrikar had a Catholic family here, we have a Catholic family there. I used to go and enjoy Christmas at their place,” Parrikar said. “I wish that people enjoy the next year, as a prosperous year, peaceful year, as a year of peace and love. That is the symbol of Ganesh Chaturthi,” he added. Last week, an article in a periodical published by the influential Roman Catholic Church had drawn a parallel between conditions in Nazi Germany and contemporary India, while subtly asking voters of Panaji assembly
constituency not to vote for Parrikar, who was contesting the August 23 by-poll. “In 2012, everyone thought in terms of having a corruption free Goa. This thinking continues till 2014 but from then and increasingly everyday, what we are witnessing in India is nothing but a constitutional holocaust. Corruption is very bad, communalism is worse, but Nazism is worse than both,” the article said. “Anybody who has read William Shirer’s ‘The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich’ or Allan Bullocks’ ‘A Study of Tyranny’ or Hitler’s own ‘Mein Kampf ’ will find an extraordinary identity between the growth and rampage of Nazism in Germany in 1933 onwards and India in 2014,” it said. Around 26 per cent of the state’s 1.5 million people are Catholic for whom the Church is a spiritual and religious guide. The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi, one of the biggest Hindu festivals in the state, got underway on Friday.
NEW DELHI, AUG 25 (AGENCIES): Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is suffering from dengue and is under treatment at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SRGH) here, said hospital authorities on Friday. Priyanka Vadra was admitted to the hospital on August 23 and her treatment is being monitored by chest medicine consultant Arup Basu. “Priyanka Vadra had fever initially, later she was confirmed as suffering from dengue. She was brought to the hospital on August 23 evening,” DS Rana, Chairman (Board of Management) of SRGH, told IANS. On being asked about her condition, Rana said that Priyanka Vadra was recovering well. Till now, Delhi has recorded 657 cases of dengue - with 325 patients from Delhi and 332 from other states. The patients are being treated in Delhi hospitals.
Kolkata, Aug 25 (IANS): Builders, who have been facing some “teething problems” under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, are likely to submit a “comprehensive representation” to the GST Council and State Finance Ministers by the end of next week seeking clarifications on various issues, an official said on Friday. “We welcome the new tax system. We have been experiencing some teething problems in the transition period. Amongst various issues that are disturbing the industry, the compliance for submitting GST returns for a particular month within 10th, 15th and 20th of the next month would be difficult for contractors,” Builders’ Association of India’s Eastern Centre Chairman Subrata Das said. Construction companies and contractors have several site offices and they need to transfer their machineries from one site to other. “According to GST law, transfer of machinery from one state to another
CBI raids Satyendar Jain’s Triple talaq petitioner seeks protection residence; AAP cries foul
Satyendar Jain New Delhi, Aug 25 (IANS): A CBI team on Friday raided Delhi Home Minister Satyendar Jain’s residence in connection with a money laundering case even as the AAP declined the charges and called the move an effort to “frame” him. An official of the Central Bureau of Investigation said the raid was conducted at four different places and had also registered a case in the matter of disproportionate assets. “Four places in Delhi including the official residence of the Minister, one of the places of his shell company and two of the places of his associates,
were raided today (Friday). The CBI on Thursday has also registered an FIR of disproportionate asset against Jain,” the official told IANS. Jain -- who holds several important portfolios including health, PWD -- also confirmed the development, tweeting: “CBI reached my home for search.” The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) denied all the charges against its leader and accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of misusing the CBI. “Jain is facing the charges of money laundering which is completely false. The BJP at Centre is misusing the CBI and the Income Tax department and is trying to frame Jain,” AAP said in a statement. The CBI in April this year had registered a preliminary inquiry (PE) against Jain and others in an alleged money laundering case to the tune of Rs 4.63 crore in 2015-16. The CBI had also questioned Jain earlier in June in the money laundering case.
Ko l k ata , Aug 2 5 (IANS): Ishrat Jahan of West Bengal, one of the five petitioners to the Supreme Court who challenged triple talaq, has written to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, appealing for police protection in the wake of “threats” to her life. “My life is in danger. My husband’s older brother molested me twice. An FIR was lodged at the police station but no action was taken. So I have no faith in the police station. I request you to take some steps for my protection,” Jahan wrote in Hindi. A copy of the letter dated August 24 that IANS has accessed said: “I am not demanding nor have I ever demanded justice or financial support from the government. But in this fight, the state government and the police have not helped me in any way and that is why I am disappointed. But for my safety and security I want that police should help me.” Jahan, who was divorced by her husband over phone from Dubai, said if anything were to happen
Ishrat Jahan to her or her children, the police would be blamed for it. “If there is any incident (attempts made at my life) or anything happens to my two children then the entire blame for this lies with the police department. I hope that being a woman you will definitely help another woman,” Jahan wrote. Jahan’s letter accompanies her lawyer Nazia Elahi Khan’s appeal to the Chief Minister, with a copy to Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, West Bengal Governor K.N. Tripathi, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the chairperson of National Commission for Women Lalitha Kumaramangalam, and Howrah Police Commissionerate,
among others. “Ishrat Jahan is receiving a lot of threat calls, being teased and many more things and you know from my previous complaint letters, the police station is not taking any action and still the local police station Golabari is not in a mood to (ensure) safety and security of Ishrat.
New Delhi, Aug 25 (IANS): The Delhi High Court on Friday questioned Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s intention behind filing an appeal against the decision of the single judge to expedite hearing of a civil defamation suit filed by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley against him and five other AAP leaders. Slamming Kejriwal and Aam Aadmi Party leader Ashutosh, a division bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C. Hari Shankar said it was hearing for the first time that a party is aggrieved by expeditious trial of a matter. The division
Arvind Kejriwal bench reserved the order on Kejriwal and Ashutosh’s plea against the single judge order. On July 26, the single judge had directed the joint registrar to expedite the recording of evidence in the civil defamation suit while disposing off an application
filed by Jaitley. The court’s order had come on an application filed by Jaitley to expedite the recording of evidence in an orderly and fair manner in the Rs 10 crore Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) defamation suit against Kejriwal and five other AAP leaders that the Minister filed in 2015. Ja i t l e y h a d f i l e d the civil defamation suit against Kejriwal, Kumar Vishwas, Ashutosh, Sanjay Singh, Raghav Chadha and Deepak Bajpayee, claiming they made “false and defamatory” statements in the case involving the DDCA, thereby harming his reputation.
6 commuters hurt as Mumbai local derails
Mumbai, Aug 25 (IANS): Six commuters sustained minor injuries when four coaches of a Harbour Line suburban train bound for Andheri derailed at a railway crossing near Mahim on Friday morning, an official said. Due to the derailment, services on the Andheri-Wadala sector of the Harbour Line on Central Railway were suspended, hitting thousands of people travelling to and fro for the 12-day Ganeshotsav celebrations which started on Friday. The official said that around 9.50 a.m., a train arriving from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and bound
for Andheri derailed around 50 metres outside Mahim station. As per prima facie investigations, the incident occurred while the train was changing tracks at a crossing outside the railway station, and coach numbers six to nine jumped the tracks. The injured commuters, including four women, were rushed to Sion Hospital and given treatment before they were allowed to go, while work to restore the track was taken up, said the official. While services on the Harbour Line were severely hit, a cascading effect was experienced even on the Western Railway and Central Railway mainlines.
GST council led by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. will attract IGST and it will impact the cash flow,” he said. The association had earlier approached Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley regarding the problems that the industry would face in the new tax regime. “It is expected we will submit a comprehensive representation to the GST Council and State Finance Ministers by the end of next week after compiling the feedbacks from all the centres,” Das said. The association, which
has 150 centres across the country, has been organising GST workshops in different parts of India and its Eastern (Kolkata) centre will hold a workshop on August 30. Association’s Past President S.K. Basu also raised how reverse charge mechanism for every goods and services received from unregistered dealers was affecting the cash flow of builders and contractors. Basu explained that builders have been facing problems with the ongoing projects. “For a particular
project, the contractors and builders had quoted an amount in the tender on the basis of particular tax assumptions. Now, with the introduction of the new tax regime, tax rates and incidence have increased from previous regime. Who will bear the additional tax?” he asked. According to him, the tax incidence for construction projects (depending on the nature of works) was up to around 6 per cent in pre-GST regime and now it has been increased to 12 per cent.

Vexed practise
hree women who were among the many muslim women victimised by the medieval practise of ‘triple talaq’, enforced by Shariat through clerics who justified such shocking law, saw their quest for justice fulfilled when the Supreme Court deemed talaq as invalid for six months till the government frames a law on the matter. On the face of it, the Supreme Court which gave its judgment on a razor thin majority of 3-2, has placed the ball on the government’s court on the contentious issue. Talaq is unilateral, arbitrary practice which results in women being thrown out of homes and rendered destitute in an instant. This unilateral, arbitrary practice results in women being thrown out of homes and rendered destitute in an instant. The husband can pronounce the three words in her absence, on phone, through a post card and the talaq or divorce just happens. The inhuman practise gives absolutely no right to the woman on her own divorce as she has only to submit to the whims and fancies of the husband who can decide instantly and unilaterally. The apex court’s judgement was long overdue as the issue had been raging on for several decades in independent India. Lest it be suggested that the court had adjusted itself to the political expediencies of the day, it needs to be reminded that the judgment was delivered by a Bench that represented five different religious faiths. The judgement will thus ensure that Muslim women will no longer be subject to a regressive practice that ran counter to gender justice and equality. However, in the light of the social impact on a matter involving a particular religion, the bench has sidestepped the broader issues of constitutional rules versus social norms. The Court did not address the tension between freedom of religion and other fundamental rights that is a central issue in a liberal democracy. Amicus Curiae Salman Khurshid felt that it was not the court’s role “to determine the true intricacies of faith”, though he accepted the other aspect of the verdict which prevented usage of this anti-women practise. Justice Kurian Joseph, a Christian who was among the five judges, took a different approach from both Chief Justice Khehar and Justice Nazeer, though he agreed with them that the Shariat Act does not codify instant triple talaq into statutory law. He however differed with them after examining relevant surahs in the Quran to conclude that triple talaq is not in fact an integral part of Muslim personal law and thus “lacks legal sanctity” under it. Political parties also could not resist the temptation of making their pitch. The issue involves not only women vis-à-vis triple talaq but whether the courts can intervene in religious practices of other communities. Even on the issue of Christian marriages, the court had said that granting of divorce by the church cannot be recognised and those who remarry after obtaining church divorce would be prosecuted for bigamy. These interventions have only buttressed the belief especially within BJP on one nation, one people and one law. This would also expose various constitutional safeguards to legal onslaught but result in damaging the country’s innate strength of secularism.
DailyDevotion Sacrifice and Friendship
I have called you friends… —John 15:15 We will never know the joy of self-sacrifice until we surrender in every detail of our lives. Yet self-surrender is the most difficult thing for us to do. We make it conditional by saying, “I’ll surrender if…!” Or we approach it by saying, “I suppose I have to devote my life to God.” We will never find the joy of self-sacrifice in either of these ways. But as soon as we do totally surrender, abandoning ourselves to Jesus, the Holy Spirit gives us a taste of His joy. The ultimate goal of self-sacrifice is to lay down our lives for our Friend (see John 15:13-14). When the Holy Spirit comes into our lives, our greatest desire is to lay down our lives for Jesus. Yet the thought of self-sacrifice never even crosses our minds, because sacrifice is the Holy Spirit’s ultimate expression of love. Our Lord is our example of a life of self-sacrifice, and He perfectly exemplified Psalm 40:8, “I delight to do Your will, O my God….” He endured tremendous personal sacrifice, yet with overflowing joy. Have I ever yielded myself in absolute submission to Jesus Christ? If He is not the One to whom I am looking for direction and guidance, then there is no benefit in my sacrifice. But when my sacrifice is made with my eyes focused on Him, slowly but surely His molding influence becomes evident in my life (see Hebrews 12:1-2). Beware of letting your natural desires hinder your walk in love before God. One of the cruelest ways to kill natural love is through the rejection that results from having built the love on natural desires. But the one true desire of a saint is the Lord Jesus. Love for God is not something sentimental or emotional— for a saint to love as God loves is the most practical thing imaginable. “I have called you friends….” Our friendship with Jesus is based on the new life He created in us, which has no resemblance or attraction to our old life but only to the life of God. It is a life that is completely humble, pure, and devoted to God.

Post-mortem response Doklam standoff China-India war: AtoChristian a corrupt society how will it impact the Northeast? I
T
he current standoff between the Indian and Chinese troops’ near India-China-Bhutan tri-junction started in mid-June 2017 but it was not until June end when media published a confusing ground report. Doka La is in Sikkim sector where India (Sikkim) has direct territorial border with China. India has no direct territorial border with China over the Doklam plateau. Doklam is an unresolved dispute between China and Bhutan. India has no direct claim over the territory in question. According to official sources, on June 6, 2017, China bulldozed an old bunker of India in Doka La region after the Indian side refused to accede to China’s request. The current standoff started on June 16, 2017 in Doklam plateau when the Indian troops stopped a road construction by China. China claims that the construction of road (possibly widening of road that had been in existence for over a decade) was in Chinese territory (Donglang region) and not at the trijunction point. Indian troops moved into Doklam plateau claiming it was on the request of Bhutan. Bhutan has diplomatic ties with India but not with China. The dispute is between China and Bhutan. It is not a tri-nation (IndiaChina-Bhutan) dispute. China alleges that India is averse to China-Bhutan direct dealing on the dispute and thus, India’s undue interference. China and Bhutan had over twenty rounds of inconclusive talks to resolve the dispute. To open up diplomatic channels to end the standoff, China says India should pull back her troops first but India says both have to withdraw simultaneously. So, the standoff continues. For how long, it is unpredictable. Sources said the current standoff has been the longest, post-1962 ChinaIndia war. This is in nutshell, the introduction of the persisting problem as gathered from media sources. Thus, without repeating the details of what experts had already narrated and expounded, I wish to deal directly, on the headline given above. General apprehension is that, the current standoff may finally escalate into another border war that has the potential to progress to full-fledged China-India war. In such eventuality, how will the war impact the northeast? The anxiety of India visà-vis the Doklam standoff is palpably, the weak connect with the northeast, both physically and emotionally. Physically, northeast connects with mainland India by the so-called Chicken’s Neck or Siliguri corridor in northern part of West Bengal. India is apprehensive that Chinese troops’ move forward into the
Doklam plateau that overlooks Chicken’s Neck poses threat to her mainland connect with an already turbulent northeast. India’s fear stemmed from varied reasons. Firstly, an existing Naga independence movement that pre-dated even India’s independence persists. Besides, there is anti-India stir for secession in most other northeastern states. Secondly, Indian govt.’s policy on restive northeast region over the past seven decades has been the most confused in that; Indian leaders are still not sure whether to treat northeast as foreign territory or Indian Territory. In the case of Nagaland, this confused policy is more conspicuous because of irrefutable history. India’s overall northeast policy had its origin in turbulent Nagaland of 1950s. Thirdly, on economic and development fronts, India has isolated and neglected the northeast for too long. India not only failed to take up systematic development initiatives seriously but also denied northeast of hassle-free foreign investments. This is because of her colonial mindset over the northeast, especially Nagaland. The major policy fault line has built up the pressure within that is waiting to explode. It has the potential to drive or encourage many northeast rebel groups and Nagas to exploit for alternative out of China-India war. After her independence, India had kept northeast States under her grip by adopting colonial style approach of bullying on one side and causing division on the other side. By buying loyalty of one section of people, India keeps her ‘divide and rule’ policy in northeast active. To India, northeast is her territory but the people are just ‘northeast people’ and not even ‘northeast Indians’. These things proved that northeast is nothing more than Indian colony. The Home Minister of India Rajnath Singh on August 21, 2017 claimed that; “India had never cast an evil eye on any country, had never attacked a nation nor did it harbor any expansionist attitude”. India’s aggression of Nagaland since 1954 and her troops’ attacks Nags are classic examples to refute that deceptive claim. Indo-Naga war stirred up antiIndia sentiment in other parts of northeast. For that reason, Indian experts called Nagas’ self-defense war against India’s naked aggression as the mother of all insurgencies in northeast. India’s economic growth has no real impact in northeast. Now, there is growing sense of realization that northeast will never fully progress under Indian rule. There is growing desire to explore for new order. The economic constraints built up over the
years may warm up anti-India stir once again to new tempo. The entire northeast rebels are waiting for re-activation. China-India war will give the much-needed fillip. If China offers more attractive alternative for peace and progress in return for local support in China-India war, most northeast rebels may choose to fight China’s war. This is because; most ethnic people of the northeast looked up to China at one point of time or other, as their guardian power for various reasons, inherent (because of common root) as well as the trust built in China. India’s fear of Chinese intrusion into Siliguri corridor appears logical because; without securing this corridor, it is a lost war in northeast, to say the least. However, in actuality, even if India secures the 17 miles wide Chicken’s Neck, the long porous northeastern corridor poses greater threat. Most northeastern states lay naked. With little cooperation from local people, China will have no problem getting foothold there. It is unlikely that China will have problem with Myanmar to get safe passage. Such situation may push India to despair and tempt her to use her stockpile of arsenals, including nuclear, in Assam against the internal hostile targets and make it appear like the cannons to have come from the east, not from the west. Corollary out of China-India war is another aspect that none can afford to overlook. Normally, almost all wars in the world had corollaries. In post-1962 China-India war, the Govt. of India interned Chinese people living in India for centuries on suspicion of aiding the mainland China in the war. In the height of Indo-Naga war from mid 1950s to early 1960s, the anger of Indian military, post-1962 war, fell on Chinese look alike Nagas defending their homeland. Chinese look alike northeastern people in mainland Indian cities may face situation akin to post-1962 war. Such foolish action will only add fuel to the fire. The Indian leaders seem to believe that the atmosphere of hostility in northeast is its strategic interest to keep her military in the Border States on high alert. Such policy has proved counter-productive. The internal hostile environment has greatly harmed the region on growth and progress. In the event of war, even if India wins the battle, she will certainly lose the war in the sense that the economic loss will cause further constraint on northeast. In the past, the northeast’s ethnic people had built hope on China for political liberation. In recent times, due to long neglect by India, economic liberation has
emerged as the other high-end goal. Either way (win or loss), China has an edge over India to meet such imaginations post-war. Territorial loss may be as great as the entire northeast going out of Indian map. India’s geographical position is precarious for surface connectivity. With hostile Pakistan in the northwest and China in the north, the only safe passage over land is the precarious northeast towards Southeast Asian countries. The Indian warmongers seems to care less if India loses passage too. If northeast falls, can Bhutan stand? This is a question that India can find the answer only in the northeast. Indian leaders like J. P. Narayan preferred Nagaland as friendly neighbor than hostile Nagaland in forced union. The external threat from northeast corridor will never end so long as hostile northeast exists. The hostility in northeast will never cease as long as forced union exists. Sadly, Indian leaders refuse to admit that. The Doklam standoff is a wake-up call for India to review her policy on northeast. Territorially, India has nothing to gain from Doklam standoff. It is just that India feels threatened by her neighbor’s activities too close to the border, especially in the Chicken’s neck. India’s defense on diplomatic front looks weak. It will not make India weaker or smaller to pull back first because; diplomatic solution if arrived at also is unlikely to change beyond restoring and maintaining status-quo. The stiff posture that India maintains now is not in her best interest because it carries the risk of losing both northeast and Bhutan in a worst-case scenario. When the chance of winning the war is not even fifty-fifty, it makes no sense to cry hoarse for war. India seems afraid that, if she pulls out first, Bhutan may take it as abandonment. The fear of losing grip on Bhutan is needless. The risk of losing northeast is much greater. Even in 1962 war, India literally bid adieu to Assam. Mainland Indians does not know the hearts of the northeast people but the northeast people know the hearts of mainland Indians. If northeast rings any bell to Indian leaders’ ears, it makes sense for India to offer pull out first, then help restore status quo between China and Bhutan. India has to choose; and choose wisely, between war and status-quo. Losing war was humiliating. Losing proxy war will be more humiliating. As for northeast, particularly Nagaland, any new order out of present hopeless situation seems tempting. Dr. K. Hoshi, Bible Hill Colony, Phek Town
What is true and untrue of acaut Nagaland? Dear Admirers and Activists of ACAUT, Here are some facts and a few of my random thoughts on ACAUT (Against Corruption and Unabated Taxation) even as we hold the Mega ACAUT Rally on August 25 in the year of our Lord 2017: 1. What is True of ACAUT Nagaland? a) Acaut was actually born on October 31 of 2013 in front of the City Tower, Dimapur. b) It is a People’s Movement leading the fight against corruption in Nagaland. c) It is also a Civil Movement comprising of the braves, clearsighted individuals – both young and old, engaged on a people’s war against corruption. d) Acaut can be You and Me. e) It is the public of Nagaland under the burden of multiple illegal taxation by different groups and reeling in the face of untold corruption in our state. f) It is the Naga Vanguard which voices out concerns on the deprivation of Naga economic progress and development. g) It runs as a people’s movement on the generosity and charity
from the Naga public. h) It fights the ‘Naga Behemoth’ (a monster in the garb of corruption) and upholds certain Christian principles such as honesty, truth and morality in public office and life. i) Acaut dreams of a welldeveloped and progressive Nagaland State like any modern state or a country – having progressive education, good roads, bridges, better public healthcare & sanitation, equal job-opportunities, modern-looking Airport & Railway Station, and so on. j) Acaut is the only harbinger of hope for a progressive Nagaland of tomorrow! 2. What is Untrue of ACAUT Nagaland? a) Acaut is not a religious movement. b) It is not a governmental organization. c) It is not a profit-organization. d) It is not a movement of individuals who have taken the bait-of-the fishing hooks of the government. e) It is not free from constructive criticism. f) It is neither a conglomerate for going against the larger Naga Dream!
3. What is the Future Possibility of ACAUT Nagaland? a) Acaut is a People’s Movement free from corruption and carnal desires. b) It is People’s Movement which may produce upright individuals and public leaders and carrying on with the people’s momentum and agenda on anti-corruption - some can become our own People’s Representatives in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) and even represent the lone MP in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. c) Yet, there is a danger of ACAUT losing its shine and collapse of it if – at any moment – the Acaut leaders of today will succumb to the lure of bribery, fraud, and abuse of power. With that hope of a future and better Nagaland – regarded as as the “Switzerland of the East,” here I and all the admirers and activists of ACAUT repose our hard-earned trust on our dear “Naga Dream Movement” of the 21st century Common Era. Long live ACAUT and God bless our Naga people! Rev. Dr. S.Temjen Imchen, Associate Professor & Vice-Principal, Serampore College, Serampore, (temjenba@gmail.com)
n the days of our forefathers, the society valued a person not in terms of material possessions or wealth, but on moral and ethical standards. Integrity of life was considered very essential to one’s life. They did not wear fashionable and expensive clothing, but their beautiful moral character was admired by everybody. When we look at our society today, we can hardly find a person of good character and integrity. Instead, the nakedness of immorality is being exposed for every outsider to mock at us. Greed has made the government to depend on the support of the central government, corrupt contractors, unscrupulous businesspersons and irresponsible politicians. They sell everything for money and power. They exchange the soul for popularity and luxury. Today, the rich people are becoming richer, the educated becoming more educated, but the poor are becoming poorer. The gap between the rich and the poor is becoming wider and wider. The greed of the rich and educated class denies justice to the people. The lust for money is the prevailing sin of the present ruling class. The turmoil of our present Naga society is due to the corruption and injustice. Many of us come from the rural agro based society. The coming of urbanization has brought economic inequality, class distinction, indifference to human needs, social injustice and corruption in offices and unbridled greed for money and power. In the past, the motive of the prosperity was for sustenance, building relationship and enjoying the fruits of labour by the whole village. The economic activity of our fathers, from the time of sowing (beginning) to harvesting (end), was communal in nature. If any family delayed in the time of cultivation or harvest for whatever reasons, those who have completed their work would jointly or privately help out the family. The poor were invited on the harvest days, were allowed to collect the leftovers and were provided paddy generously, as much as they could carry. The motive of accumulation and hoarding was alien to our forefathers. Prosperity or economic self-sufficiency was not in accumulation or hoarding of goods, but in sharing, in celebrating together and in creating a sense of common wellbeing. It was oriented to maintaining the community well-being and solidarity. It is in such magnanimous acts they believed they would have abundance in the present life and in the next life. Christianity is a religion that calls for a constant and consistent radical transformation of life situations from poverty to well-being, from injustice to justice and from selfishness to generosity and through the totality of these experiences, we are to experience the immense love of God as well as the fullness of spiritual abundance. Christianity recognizes the fact that poor condition of life is not fate or destined to be so but are superficially created by greed, selfishness, ignorance and injustice perpetuated by fellow human beings. Christianity is not a religion of other worldliness, as it is being accused of, but it concerns the life here and now with the pre-condition that the life after this life invariably depends on the way we live in this life itself. It is a religion that does not deal with the issue of mere salvation of souls but the whole man; liberation of man from all forms of social and spiritual infirmities. Christianity is a call for abundance of life. The best and clearest presentation of Christianity is Christ Himself and his call is a demand for faith in action. Christ identified himself with the poor to liberate them from every impediment of injustices. The mission of Christ was to turn unjust conditions of life upside down through a new social and world order as enunciated in the gospels. The gospel offers a serious challenge to the present day Naga society and its structure. Belief system plays an important part in every human life. The health of societies depends on what belief system it enforces. It is very unfortunate that many people don’t even care to know what one believe in and most often remain victims of one’s own belief system. Besides, what we believe to be the only truth may not be so true, after all since our present day experience show that it is doing more disservice than good to ourselves and the society. For all these reasons, it is imperative that we know critically, why we believe and live by what we believe. Rev. Fr. Benjamin Chang, Meluri Town

Sir,
Effects of social media
With the advancement of technology, every Tom, Dick and Harry has a smart phone with an inbuilt camera. Although people using smartphones is not an issue using it to share or rather spread news has become so wide spread that the dangers of making a fake news viral has risen to the dangerous levels of destroying someone’s live. With social medias like Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, some of the most commonly used social media platforms, easily accessible, people somehow seem to have lost the sense of discernment and discretion. In a general term most of the people in our Naga society could only be the third or fourth offspring of an educated person and on that note we rather seem to have been abruptly thrust into a time where technology is on a fast pace and our intellectuality level may not have reached that pace yet. Cases of misinformation and fake news are on the rise which is a panicking trend. People sharing photos of corpses, horribly disfigured bodies etc. are a matter of great concern because people seem to have lost the respect for the dead. People should be properly sensitized and educated on the importance of behaving like civilized people not just in the real world but even in the virtual world and I believe this should start from home. We need to be more matured while sharing posts. We should first understand the gravity of a shared post, measure the effects that particular post might create and then only share it. We should not behave like a saying in the Western world ‘Trigger Happy’ people, always waiting to be the first to spread news or even a rumour without even authenticating its source. We may become victims of our own folly if we do not watch our steps. Seyie Angami

Dhinakaran removes Dokalam standoff: Prepared to SC: Privacy ruling may have minister from key party post tackle all contingencies: Dhanoa bearing on beef ban cases
Supreme Court of India
New Delhi, Aug 25 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Friday said that its holding of the right to privacy to be a fundamental right could have some bearing on the hearing of a batch of petitions including by Maharashtra government challenging the Bombay High Court verdict permitting the possession and eating of beef brought from outside the state. “Yes, that judgement may have some bearing in these matters,” the bench of Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Ashok Bhushan said as senior counsel Chander Uday Singh urged the bench to give them time to study the judgment by the nine judge bench which may have bearing on their matter. The judgment pronounced by a nine-judge
bench on Thursday has held that the right to privacy was a fundamental right. Chander Uday singh who appeared for a Mumbai-based lawyer Haresh Jagtiani referred to Justice J.Chelameswar’s judgment on privacy which said: “I do not think that anybody would like to be told by the State as to what they should eat or how they should dress ...” Appearing for some other petitioners, senior counsel Indira Jaising told the court that 2005 majority judgment (6-1) by a seven judge bench had wrongly decided in favour of complete prohibition on the slaughter of cows and calves including other milch and draught cattle. She said that Mirzapur judgment as 2005 judgment is commonly known in legal circles needs to be relooked
and urged the court to pass necessary orders. At this, the bench said that it would consider whether this should be sent to a larger bench. While permitting the possession and eating of beef brought from outside Maharashtra, the Bombay High Court had by its May 6, 2016, judgment had uphold the ban imposed by the state government on the slaughtering and sale of beef within the state. The Maharashtra government had moved the top court on August 10 challenging this verdict. The top court is hearing a batch of cross petitions including one by Akhil Bharat Krishi Go Sewa Sangh, which questioned the high court judgment holding that the right to eat was a fundamental right forming a part of right to privacy.
Chinese shoes packed in tri- Govt appoints colour boxes raise furore chairman of DPDBs
The boxes have the Tricolour on top and the base carries some letters in Mandarin.
Haldwani, AUG 25 (AGENCIES): Police have started investigation after local shopkeepers in Uttarakhand’s Almora said they had been delivered shoes in boxes bearing the Tricolour, allegedly from China. The boxes have the Tricolour on top and the base carries some letters in Mandarin, police said, triggering speculation among locals that the move was aimed at humiliating Indians amid a tense standoff between the two countries at Doklam. Almora Senior Superintendent of Police P Renuka Devi said putting the shoes in boxes with the national flag was an insult to the Tricolour and that they were investigating the matter. Udham Singh Nagar Senior Superintendent of Police Sadanand Date said the police questioned the owner
of Tammana Traders in Rudrapur, who said that he bought the shoes from a distributor in Delhi and did not know their place of origin. “We would be questioning the dealer in New Delhi to ascertain the origin of these shoes”, said the SSP. But the discovery of the boxes has sent the local population into a tizzy. The case has been filed by the shopkeepers Bishan Bora against the shoe supplier of Rudrapur. Bora claimed as soon as he opened the consignment he found only seven seven shoe pair in proper box and rest of the pairs came in the tricolur box. “I received the goods on Thursday and when I opened the bags, I was shocked. I called the police, sensing something wrong,” said shopkeeper Bishan Bora, who filed the initial complaint.

Channai, AUG 25 (AGENCIES): Sidelined AIADMK Deputy General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran today removed another minister from a key party post as part of organisational shake-up. He “relieved” Higher Education Minister K.P. Anbalagan as the party’s Dharmapuri district secretary and bifurcated the Dindigul district unit. In a statement, Mr. Dhinakaran, nephew of jailed party chief V.K. Sasikala, announced replacing Anbalagan with local leader D.K. Rajendran. Anbalagan is the fifth AIADMK minister to be stripped of party posts by Dhinakaran who is involved in a tussle for power with Chief Minister K. Palaniswami. Two days back, Dhinakaran had removed four ministers from party posts in a bid to assert his authority in AIADMK (Amma). He had appointed a number of his supporters, including MLAs, to various posts. Today, he also removed Dindigul secretary V. Marudaraj and announced that the district was being bifurcated organisation-wise as Dindigul East and West. Dindigul East would cover four Assembly constituencies while the other

The Air Chief Marshal was in the city to inaugurate the 56th Annual Conference organised by the Indian Institute of Aerospace Medicine. Dhanoa had, in a media interview in July, said there had been a tremendous jump in the capabilities of the Air Force from the time of the 1999 Kargil war and the ability to operate day and night and in all weather conditions

(From p-1) Speaker after speaker from various organisations representing every district of the state including invitees denounced corruption in every form and challenged the public to commit themselves to fight the battle on all fronts. Leading the onslaught, retired bureaucrat and advisor ACAUT, Khekiye K. Sema called upon all citizens of Nagaland to join the fight as it was “time for action” and signalling the intent to launch a state-wide movement with active participation of people. Khekiye went on to hit out at the decision of the Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) for choosing to stay away from the public rally. He opined that NCD, by not taking part, had “voted for corruption”. Drawing attention on the fuel adulteration issue and PDS rice scam unearthed by the ACAUT and the Pillai case in the police department, Khekiye said many of the business establishments in the state were being run by non-Nagas under the guise of Naga owners. He called upon the gathering
not to remain a mute spectator but to stand up and fight against the corrupt practices taking place in the state. Khekiye further urged upon the gathering to demand that the state government bring in the CBI probe on the multi-crore scams in the state including backdoor appointments. On the Framework A g r e e m e n t , K h e k i ye maintained that it would not allow the future of the Nagas to be decided by the others without knowing the content of the agreement. He said “we are not against the framework agreement”, but reiterated that the Government of India (GoI) should not allow NSCN (I-M) to go for final agreement without the involvement of the people. He further said that the six NNPGs should also be officially invited for formal talks. “Include the six NNPGs before the final solution, only with NSCN (I-M) will bring a civil war”, Khekiye said. ENPO representative, H. Hotongse Sangtam accused the present political leaders of undervaluing the public and warned that

the public would no longer remain silent. He said the present government had lost morality and proposed for a clean election, while encouraging the people not to adhere to the false promises of the government. Thepfulhouvi Solo spoke on the sorry state of affairs in the state and charged Nagaland government as a “cheating machinery”. He called upon the youths to stand up and raise their voices as they would be repaying the deficit left behind by the present leaders, who had siphoned huge public funds. Solo also called upon the Naga people to extend support to those organizations who were not afraid of guns and was ready to the fight for the cause of the Nagas. Z. Lohe welcomed the decision of the six NNPGs to exempt Naga entrepreneurs from taxation. He termed the move of NNPGs as “true patriotism and nationalism.” On Naga solution, Lohe was of the opinion that the Government of India would not be able to deliver solution with the

C h e n na i , AUG 2 5 (AGENCIES): The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Friday urged Tamil Nadu Governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao to immediately direct Chief Minister K Palaniswami to prove his majority in the Assembly in the wake of revolt by 19 AIADMK MLAs, saying any delay could lead to “horse trading”. Stalin urges Governor to ask Edappadi to prove majority dubbed the Palaniswami regime as a “minority government”. In a statement released here, he also questioned assembly Speaker P Dhanapal’s action in issuing notices to the 19 MLAs on Thursday on a memorandum by the Government Chief Whip seeking their disqualification for alleged anti-party activities. Stalin said had earlier written to the Governor urging him to immediately ask Palaniswami to prove majority in the Assembly. The Governor should have immediately convened the Assembly to ascertain the government’s present strength after the MLAs loyal to sidelined AIADMK deputy general secretary TTV Dhinakaran met him and sought Palaniswami’s removal on Tuesday, he said. Stalin said the Governor should ensure that Palaniswami does not continue
to have. Earlier, addressing the gathering, Dhanoa said grounding of pilots on medical grounds was a tremendous loss to the IAF and also adversely affected the morale of the individuals concerned. “Your scientific work may provide hope to the aviators, who have overcome medical ailments, to return to active flying duties,” he said.

New Delhi, Aug 25 (PTI): Gold prices drifted lower by Rs 150 to Rs 29,700 per ten gram today, tracking a weak trend overseas amid fall in demand from local jewellers. Silver, however, held steady at Rs 40,200 per kg in scattered deals. Traders said apart from a weak trend overseas, easing demand from local jewellers and retailers at domestic spot market mainly pulled down the gold prices. Globally, gold fell 0.35 per cent to USD 1,285.80 an ounce in New York yesterday. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India in February 2006 directed mobile service providers to differential rates being levied by them on subscribers. It asked operators to refund excess amount that they charged to their customers. The direction was challenged by the Cellular Operators Association of India and other telecom operators while they continued charging higher rates to consumers. Telecom tribunal TDSAT dismissed COAI’s appeal following which the industry body moved the Supreme Court. The apex court dismissed the appeal in January 2015.

New Delhi, Aug 25 (PTI): Nandan Nilekani, who was named Infosys Non-executive Chairman last night, Friday said he will focus on bringing in stability and ensuring there are no “discordant” voices at the country’s secondlargest IT firm. Within hours of taking charge at the helm of Infosys, Nilekani got into damage control mode seeking to calm investors’ nerves through an early morning conference call. The company has been in a crisis over the last few months amid a standoff between the founders and the management over allegations of corporate governance lapses. Last night, the Infosys board was recast, with Chairman R Seshasayee stepping down along with two other independent directors. Co-chair Ravi Venkatesan has now moved

NEW DELHI, Aug 25 (PTI): Telecom regulator Trai has directed Idea Cellular to deposit Rs 2.97 crore for over- charging its subscribers for making calls to BSNL and MTNL networks. The amount is to be deposited in the Telecom Consumers Education and Protection Fund (TCEPF) as Idea would not be able to make the refund to subscribers in view of non- availability of the rated call data records. The issue dates back to May 2005 when the Department of Telecom (DoT) amended licences to permit inter-service area connectivity among telecom operators within four states -- Maharashtra, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. As per the amendment, calls within each of these states were treated as intra-service area (or local) calls for the purpose of call routing and levy of access deficit charge. The regulator said

Pandey said various deadlines that have been prescribed, be it under provision of Aadhaar Act, Income Tax Act or money laundering rules will “have to be adhered to” as “those laws are valid”. He exuded confidence that Aadhaar Act, with its data protection safeguards, will pass the test of privacy being a fundamental right. The biometric identifier is currently required for services ranging from getting subsidised cooking gas to opening bank account and obtaining a new phone number. The Supreme Court “judgement has not said anything about the Aadhaar Act so the Aadhaar Act is a valid Act passed by the Parliament (and) is the law of the land”, Pandey said. couple of years, India has recorded a pickup in FDI inflows to the manufacturing sector. Historically such investments have been more towards the service sector. According to the report, FDI flows into manufacturing “bodes well for creating a productive spill-over impact on other sectors of the economy; for instance, boosting exports and creating jobs”. “In 2016-17, the largest increase in FDI was in the telecom sector (USD 4.2 bn) followed by insurance. Besides these, cement, electrical equipment, banking services, metallurgical industries and the broadcasting sectors also received higher flows in the last fiscal,” it added. Observing that India needs FDI inflows to fund its current account deficit, UBS said the country requires “to focus on attracting stable FDI flows to improve the competitiveness of its manufacturing sector and to make it an integral part of the global value chain”.

Mumbai, Aug 25 (PTI): FDI inflows into the country is likely to rise to 2.5 per cent of GDP over the next five years, helped by economic growth and ongoing structural reforms, said a report by UBS Securities India. The foreign direct investments (FDI) into India have nearly doubled over the past decade to USD 42 billion, which was 1.9 per cent of GDP in 2016-17. “Post 2014 general election, FDI inflows saw a compound annual growth rate of 11 per cent versus a dip of 6 per cent seen over the previous 5 years,” UBS said. “We expect FDI inflows to India to rise further to 2.5 per cent of GDP over the next 5 years,” added the foreign brokerage. UBS noted that unlike China, where the government has phased out FDIfavoured policies, India will be increasingly recognised as a favoured destination by overseas investors “if growth is accompanied with continuous structural reforms”. Interestingly, the report said that over the last
New Delhi, Aug 25 (PTI): Tax payers will have to link their PAN with Aadhaar by the stipulated deadline, which is this month-end, as the Supreme Court verdict on privacy has no bearing on the requirement, UIDAI CEO Ajay Bhushan Pandey has said. The requirement for Aadhaar being quoted for availing government subsidies, welfare schemes and other benefits will also continue unhindered for now, he told PTI. The government had mandated linking of PAN with Aadhaar by the extended deadline of August 31. Asked about the implication of the Supreme Court ruling (privacy being a fundamental right) on linking of Aadhaar and PAN, Pandey said: “There also, linking of PAN to Aadhaar is mandated by an amendment in income tax act...the linking will

Pandey’s clarification assumes significance in the light of a landmark verdict by SC yesterday that privacy is a fundamental right and an intrinsic part of Right to Life and Personal Liberty. Several experts have said that the judgement will have a bearing on data collection and storage guidelines followed by various agencies, including in large projects like Aadhaar. Asked if one can refuse to give their details in the backdrop of SC order, Pandey said: “As of today, no. Because Aadhaar Act is a valid Act and this judgement has not commented anything on Aadhaar Act.” Pandey said Aadhaar enrolment will continue unhindered.

Angola’s Casa-CE alliance party gained nearly 10% of the vote. Angola is one of Africa’s largest oil producers, but it is struggling to recover from a 27-year-civil war between the MPLA and Unita and most people live in poverty. Lourenço, the former defence minister known as JLo, was the MPLA candidate to succeed Dos Santos. However Dos Santos, whose 38-year reign makes him the world’s second-longest serving president, will remain in control of the party. His children also still hold several key positions of authority.
Islamabad, Aug 25 (IANS): Ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ’s children and his son-in-law on Friday filed review petitions challenging the Supreme Court’s July 28 verdict in the Panama Papers case. SEOUL, AUG 25 (AGENCIES): A court in South Korea has sentenced Samsung’s billionaire heir-apparent Lee Jae-yong to five years in prison for corruption. Lee was convicted of bribery in a scandal that also saw the impeachment of South Korea’s former president. The case has gripped the public amid growing anger against South Korea’s biggest companies, known as chaebols. Lee, who denied all charges, had faced a jail sentence of up to 12 years. Also known as Jay Y Lee, the de facto head of the world’s largest smartphone maker had been detained since February on a string of corruption charges. These included bribery, embezzlement and hiding assets overseas. The 49-year-old is accused of giving donations worth 41bn won ($36m; £29m) to non-profit foundations operated by Choi Soon-sil, a friend of South Korea’s former President Park Geun-hye, in return for political favours. Prosecutors said the donations were made to Ms Park’s confidante to win government support for a big restructuring of Samsung that would strengthen Lee’s control over Samsung Electronics. But Lee’s defence team said that the payments were
signed off without his knowledge. Lee has previously admitted that the firm also gave a horse and money to help the equestrian career of Choi’s daughter, Chung Yoo-ra, but denied seeking favours. His lawyer said on Friday they would appeal against the court’s decision. “We are confident the ruling will be overturned,” Song Wu-cheol said. The case contributed to President Park’s eventual impeachment and she now faces trial for corruption herself, something she denies. Her friend Choi has already been jailed for three years after being found guilty of using her position of influence to solicit favours for her daughter. On Friday, two other Samsung executives, Choi Gee-sung and Chang Choong-ki, were also convicted in the same trial as Lee and sentenced to four

years in prison. Former Samsung Electronics president Park Sang-jin and exe c u t ive v i c e - p r e s i d e n t Hwang Sung-soo were handed suspended sentences. This isn’t the first time a top executive of a big conglomerate has been convicted for corruption in South Korea. But in the past, they’ve either been given suspended sentences or have been pardoned by the president. The new president, Moon Jae-in, has already said there will be no more presidential pardons. So if Lee’s sentence is upheld by higher courts and he ends up serving his complete sentence in jail or a significant part of it, that will be a departure from what we’ve seen in South Korea in the past. And the new government says that will be a strong message to chaebols that they need to clean up the way they do business.
Thai police had deployed 3,000 officers to the streets ahead of the hearing to guard against potential protests. As many as 1,000 supporters had gathered to hear the verdict. The crowds came despite a plea from Yingluck on Facebook to stay away from the court due to security concerns. The court also ordered the seizure of her 30 million baht ($900,360) bail bond. Reports said she was last seen in Bangkok on Wednesday. When she was inaugurated in 2011, Yingluck became Thailand’s first female Prime Minister and its youngest in over 60 years. The sister of exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Yingluck was ousted by a coup in 2014 and was later impeached by Thailand’s military-appointed National Legislative Assembly.
Deuba’s remarks in India disgraceful: Oli Kathmandu, Aug 25 (IANS): Former Nepali Prime Minister and CPNUML Chairman K.P. Sharma Oli on Friday termed Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deubas activities and the statements during his ongoing India visit as “disgraceful”. Talking to journalists at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) here before heading to Thailand for a health check-up, the opposition leader -- a strident critic of Premier Deuba -- said: “Deuba raised the issue of Constitution’s acceptability out of context on a foreign land. Who was he trying to please by such remarks?” During a joint press conference on Thursday, Deuba told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that efforts to amend the Constitution were underway. “He is the Prime Minister, he took the oath of office and secrecy from the same Constitution. He was elected the Prime Minister under the same Constitution,” he was quoted as saying by the Kathmandu Post. The Communist Party of Nepal (Unified MarxistLeninist) Chairman said that Deuba, who is in India on a five-day visit, made a mockery of the decision taken by lawmakers of Nepal regarding the Constitution amendment.

Bangkok, Aug 25 (IANS): Former Thai PM Yingluck Shinawatra has fled abroad as the country’s Supreme Court issued an arrest warrant after she failed to appear on Friday for the verdict in a negligence case brought against her by the ruling junta, a media report said. A BBC report quoted sources close to her party as saying that she made the decision to leave unexpectedly. The top court issued the arrest warrant against Yingluck after she did not appear for the verdict in her trial over a rice subsidy scheme. Judges also postponed the verdict til September 27. Yingluck has denied any wrongdoing in the scheme which cost Thailand billions of dollars. The scheme, introduced in 2011, pledged to pay farmers well above the market rate for their crop and ended up costing the country billions. Yingluck said the rice subsidy scheme was “beneficial for the farmers and the country”. The flare-up came just hours after former UN chief Kofi Annan released a milestone report detailing conditions inside Rakhine and offering ways to heal the festering sectarian tensions there. Commissioned by Myanmar’s own government, it urged the scrapping of restrictions of movement and citizenship imposed on the roughly one million-strong Rohingya community in Rakhine. Militant attack kills 89 in Myanmar’s Rakhine
Maungdaw (Myanmar), Aug 25 (AFP): At least 89 people including a dozen security forces were killed as Rohingya militants besieged border posts in northern Rakhine State, Myanmar’s authorities said today, triggering a fresh exodus of refugees towards Bangladesh. The state is bisected by religious hatred focused on the stateless Rohingya Muslim minority, who are reviled and perceived as illegal immigrants in Buddhist-majority Myanmar. The office of de-facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi said 12 security officials had been killed alongside 77 militants -- the highest declared single day toll since fighting broke out last year. Friday’s fighting exploded around Rathedaung township which has seen a heavy build-up of Myanmar troops in recent weeks, with reports filtering out of killings by shadowy groups, army-blockaded villages and abuses. Some 20 police posts came under attack in the early hours of Friday by an estimated 150 insurgents, some carrying guns and using homemade explo-

Barcelona to sign Dembele
Ousmane Dembele
BERLIN, Aug 25 (Agencies): Barcelona have agreed a fee for the transfer of Borussia Dortmund’s Ousmane Dembele to Spain, ending a saga that led to the talented 20-year-old winger being suspended by the Bundesliga club, Germany’s Bild newspaper said on Thursday. Citing unnamed sources the newspaper said Barcelona had agreed to pay Dortmund 120 million euros ($141.66 million) and up to

150 million euros depending on performance bonuses, making it the second most expensive signing ever. The paper reported the deal was struck in Monaco where both teams’ representatives are present for the Champions League draw. It was unclear if contracts had been signed. Brazilian Neymar joined Paris St Germain from Barcelona in a world record move worth 222 million euros earlier this month. France international Dembele, who joined Dortmund last year from Stade Rennes in a 15-million euro deal running to 2021, had been forcing his move to Spain and had missed training earlier this month, leading to his suspension.

The goal came as a huge hammer blow to the Croats, who were offered a way back into the tie when Ashley William impeded Ante Erceg inside the area, but Pickford got down well to deny Ahmed said from the spot in the 65th minute. Everton comfortably saw out the tie and now turn their attention back to the Premier League where they face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Pallekele, Aug 25 (PTI): Sri Lankan skipper Upul Tharanga has been banned for two ODIs for slow over rate in the rainaffected second one-dayer against India. Sri Lanka were three overs behind the over rate even as the match was reduced to 47 overs for the Indian chase. India won the match by three wickets with 2.4 overs to spare and took a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. This is Tharanga’s second ban in recent times after he suffered a similar two-match ban for slow over-rate in the Champions Trophy when he had led the side against South Africa in the absence of then-skipper Angelo Mathews. Sri Lanka have made two changes to their squad, bringing in Test skipper Dinesh Chandimal, who was initially left out of the ODI squad, and batsman Lahiru Thirimanne for
two ODIs minimum. Surprisingly, Chandimal will not be leading the side in the third and fourth ODIs. Instead, Chamara Kapugedara, who scored 40 runs in the second ODI, will lead the side. He was already the anointed vice-captain for the Sri Lankan team in the first two matches and thus was the obvious candidate to lead the side. It could be a blessing in disguise for the hosts as Tharanga had been suffering from poor form across formats. He only scored 88

atleast the next two matches. Thirimanne, who was also included in the Test squad but didn’t play, has been brought into the side because opener Danushka Gunathilaka injured his shoulder whilst fielding yesterday. Gunathilaka is expected to miss the next
runs in six innings during the three Test series and failed again in the first two ODIs with scores of 9 and 13 in Dambulla and Pallekele, respectively. Thirimanne last played ODI cricket in January 2016 against New Zealand. He has an experience of 107 ODIs and was a regular opener. Chandimal also brings with him an experience of 128 ODIs, and this will be a fresh start for him after he was dropped from the ODI side following Sri Lanka’s exit from the Champions Trophy.

Sindhu assured of bronze at Worlds
Glasgow, Aug 25 (PTI): P V Sindhu Friday completed a hat- trick of medals at the World Badminton Championship as she stormed into the semifinals, lifting India’s spirit after Kidambi Srikanth’s quarterfinal exit here. Sindhu, a silver medallist at the Rio Olympics, assured herself of at least a bronze with a clinical display against world number six Chinese Sun Yu. The 22-year-old, who has won a bronze at the 2013 and 2014 editions, disposed off Sun Yu 21-14 21-9 in 39 minutes at the Emirates Arena. The world No. 4 Indian will next take on another Chinese - world No. 10 Chen Yufei, who saw off former world champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand. Earlier, Srikanth went down fighting 14-21 18-21 to world No. 1 Son Wan Ho of Korea in men’s singles competition. Srikanth had emerged as India’s best bet at the event after clinching backto-back titles at Indonesia and Australia and a

final finish at the Singapore Open. The 24-year-old from Guntur had come into the match with twin victories over Son Wan in June at the Indonesia Super Series Premier and Australia Super Series but it counted for little as the Korean dished out a near-perfect game to outclass the Indian in a 49minute clash. Among other top shuttlers, Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen, five-time champion Lin Dan also reached the semifinals in men’s singles. Sindhu dished out an
aggressive game and never looked in doubt as she led from start to finish during the 39-minute lop-sided match. Sun, on the other hand, looked out of sorts and nervous. In the first game, Sindhu led 5-4, which she extended to 8-4. The duo then engaged in one of the longest rallies that had 39 shots. Sindhu eventually sealed it with a half cross court smash and quickly grabbed a 11-4 lead at the break when Sun made a wrong judgement at the baseline. Playing the faster side
of the court, Sindhu tried to make her opponent bend and move across the court with her acute-angled strokes. She sometimes used her deception and changed her pace to outwit the Chinese. The result was Sindhu quickly moved to 15-5 lead. Sun reduced the margin to 10-16 but Sindhu eventually earned seven game points with a smart return at the forecourt that left her opponent stranded. Sindhu faltered with a return before sealing the first game with a lovely drop shot. The second game started with another long rally which Sindhu won with an onrushing body smash. The Indian continued to pile on the pressure to lead 11-4 at the interval. The breather didn’t bring any respite for Sun as Sindhu moved to 18-8. Frustration was clear on the face of Sun, who tried her bit to upstage the Indian but Sindhu seemed to have all the answers as she reached 11 match points with a low cross court flick. She sealed the contest when Sun went long once again.
Bale returns to Wales squad
Gareth Bale
LO N D O N, Au g 2 5 (Agencies): Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale was recalled by Wales on Friday for their forthcoming 2018 World Cup qualifying matches against Austria and Moldova. Bale, 28, missed Wales’s last game, a 1-1 draw against Serbia in June, through suspension. Stoke City midfielder Joe Allen and Aston Villa left-back Neil Taylor were both named in the squad, but are suspended for the game against Austria. Wales play Austria at Cardiff City Stadium on September 2 before tackling Moldova in Chisinau three days later. Chris Coleman’s side, surprise semifinalists at Euro 2016, are currently third in Group D, four points behind leaders Serbia and the Republic of Ireland with four matches remaining.

Ronaldo is UEFA Player of the Year M o nac o, Au g 2 5 (Agencies): Cristiano Ronaldo has won the UEFA Player of the Year award for the third time in four years. Barcelona star Lionel Messi and Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon were beaten to the accolade by Ronaldo. The Real Madrid star, 32, scooped the honour after helping his side to Champions League glory in 2016-17, scoring 12 goals in the competition. A magnificent campaign from Ronaldo saw him score a total of 42 goals across all competitions as Madrid added a LaLiga title to the defence of their European crown. “[My goal is] the same every year - the same challenge to win everything, if possible, with my club and the national team,” Ronaldo said. “As I said before, I’m so glad to be here. It is an honour to win this trophy again. I have to say thanks to my team-mates and congratulations to them too. For the national team, too. I know it is not a trophy of

the national team but when I go to them they give me motivation every time. “Also [I am] blessed for the supporters of Real Madrid. I am so happy for everyone who helped me to win this trophy. Thank you to everyone.” The award, which was announced at Thursday’s Champions League draw in Nyon, adds to the Portugal international’s triumphs in 2014 and 2016. Messi has won it twice in 2011 and 2015, with
Andres Iniesta and Franck Ribery the other players to have won the accolade since its inaugural year in 2010. It replaced the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year award, which Ronaldo and Messi also won once apiece. The ceremony also saw the best goalkeeper award won by Buffon, with Sergio Ramos named the season’s top defender, Luka Modric the best midfielder and Ronaldo getting the forward accolade.
