D I M A P U R , AU G 2 2 (NPN): ACAUT Nagaland hit out at Nagaland State VDB Association (NSVDBA) for trying to defend the Rural Development Department over alleged misappropriation of Rs.1188.79 crore MGNREGA funds (2016-17). ACAUT said due to “ignorance” of NSVDBA, the latter’s rejoinder disclosed that MGNREGA funds could not be released from VDB accounts without approval and information of the VDB secretary, since the accounts were jointly held by the BDO,VC Chairman and VDB secretary in every village. NEW DELHI, AUG 22 (AGENCIES): In a historic decision, a five-judge constitution bench of the Supreme Court by 3:2 majority struck down triple talaq, or instant divorce, practice as unconstitutional. In a split verdict, three of the five all-male judges on the case said the practice of saying “talaq”, or divorce, three times in one go – sometimes even over email and WhatsApp – violated women’s right to equality and was not integral to Islam. However, Chief Justice, J S Khehar and justice S Abdul Nazeer held triple talaq to be part of fundamental right to religion of Muslims and said it was not unconstitutional. But, Justices Kurian Joseph, R F Nariman and U U Lalit said triple talaq violated the fundamental right of Muslim women as they are subjected to arbitrary irrevocable divorce through this practice. CJI Khehar and Justice Nazeer, even while holding triple talaq to be valid, ordered a stay on this practice for six months to
enable legislature bring a law banning this practice. They said if a legislation banning triple talaq completely is placed before Parliament within six months, the stay on the practice would continue till Parliament enacted or rejected the law. Justice Joseph said triple talaq was not sanctioned by Quran and hence could not form part of the fundamental right to religion. The hearing in the case started in May this year when the country’s top judges decided to forgo their summer break for a day-to-day hearing that lasted six days. “What is bad in theology is bad in law as well,” said justice Kurian Joseph who was part of the majority view. Muslim men in India can still divorce using two other forms of talaq that have a three-month cooling off period. Muslim women usually divorce using a practice called Khula. Instant talaq, or “talaq-e-biddat”, is banned in 22 Muslim-

Need for ‘Make in India’ health module in NE: DONER Minister
New Delhi, Aug 22 (IANS): DONER Minister Jitendra Singh on Tuesday called for a ‘Make in India’ health module in the northeast region under the Public-Private Partnership mode to meet the changing health needs of the 21st century. Stating that topographical and geographical conditions in different regions of India vary, he called for introduction of Helicopter Care Service in the form of air clinics wherein specialist doctors could fly to remote areas to hold the OPD and on way back could also carry some needy patients requiring hospitalization. “Disorders like diabetes and heart disease are now also on the rise in rural areas. On the other hand, the access to modern modalities of treatment is confined only to cities and big towns, as a result of which 70 per cent of rural population gets access only to 1/3rd of country’s hospitalization facilities and over 600 million people in the country are deprived of access to affordable healthcare,” said Singh.

OFFICE OF THE Repatriation of Bru families during dry GAILI YOUTH ORGANISATION PEREN : NAGALAND season: Singla Regd. No. SRC/Home/7020/2013 dt. 01/08/13
Aizawl, Aug 22 (PTI): The Adviser (Bru), Ministry of Home Affairs has suggested that repatriation of Bru families from six relief in North Tripura might be undertaken during dry season, Mizoram Home department officials said Tuesday. Mahesh Kumar Singla, Adviser (Bru) made this suggestion at a meeting held in Aizawl yesterday, the officials said, adding that the former visited some villages in Tripura border Mamit district and Assam border Kolasib district where those repatriated were proposed to be resettled. “It is not yet clear if the Bru repatriation process would be taken up as the attempts were futile exercise with the Bru community lodged in the relief camps unwilling to return to Mizoram,” the officials said. They said that the Brus were making a plethora of excuses and several sets of new demands as condition for their return to Mizoram every time the road map for the repatriation was being to be implemented. The Centre also had to take up a series of initiatives before the repatriation process could be taken up, they said. Thousands of Brus left Mizoram and migrated to Tripura after Lalzawmliana, a forest guard was gunned down by Bru militants on October 21, 1997 inside Dampa Tiger Reserve near Persang hamlet. The first attempt to repatriate them from November 16, 2009 not only did not take off, but a murder of Zarzokima, a young boy near Bungthuam village by the Bru militants triggered another wave of exodus.
But the demand for “dividing Assam 50:50” to create a separate state hasn’t died down. Areas falling under the BTC witnessed major clashes between Bodos and other groups in 2012 and 2014 leading to over 100 deaths. Even last year, Bodoland agitation took place. Assam has more than 25 lakh Bodos staying in various parts of the state. The Bodos are an ethnic and linguistic aboriginal group of Assam. Bodos have been recognised as a plains tribe in the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Udalguri, Chirang, Baksa, Sonitpur, Goalpara, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Darrang, Bongaigaon, and Kokrajhar of Assam are considered the centre of the Bodo area.

Guwahati, Aug 22 (Agencies): As the stalemate over the demand for a separate Gorkhaland state continues with the agitation by Gorkhas in the hills of West Bengal reaching almost 70 days, in neighbouring Assam, Bodos are preparing to restart their movement to demand a separate state of Bodoland from August 28 onwards. AIADMK merger: Oppn seeks trust vote Dinakaran faction MLAs ferried to resort in Puducherry
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami (R) and O Panneerselvam exchange greetings with supporters following merger of their factions in Chennai on Monday. NEW DELHI/CHENNAI, AUG 22 (AGENCIES): The political upheaval in Tamil Nadu is far from over. With the MLAs loyal to Sasikala and Dhinakaran raising the banner of revolt against the government, the opposition DMK and the lone IUML MLA want Chief Minister K Palaniswami to take a trust vote in the assembly. The MLAs loyal to the sidelined AIADMK leaders met the Governor on Tuesday and told him that they no longer had confidence in K Palaniswami government. “We are going to initiate efforts to bring in a new CM with the help of our supporting MLAs,” Dhinakaran supporter and Andipatti MLA Thanga Tamil Selvan told reporters following a meeting with Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao a day after the patch-up between the camps led by Palaniswami and rebel leader Panneerselvam. The Dhinakaran camp had on Monday claimed the support of 25 AIADMK MLAs. Raj Bhavan sources confirmed that the meeting took place this morning, but did not divulge details, including the number of mem-

bers in the delegation and the nature of their interaction with Rao. “We have informed the Governor that we don’t have confidence in the Chief Minister,” Selvan said after the MLAs owing allegiance to Dhinakaran, nephew of jailed AIADMK general secretary V K Sasikala, met Rao. Of the 234-member Assembly, the AIADMK has 134 MLAs excluding the Speaker. Late chief minister Jayalalithaa’s RK Nagar constituency is still vacant. The DMK has 89 seats followed by its allies Congress with eight and IUML one seat. Seeking to capitalise on the developments, principal opposition DMK shot off a letter to the Governor asking him to convene the assembly and direct Palaniswami to prove his majority in the House. Asked about the possibility of the Palaniswami government facing a trust vote, Selvan said that was “our intention.” “Our intention is that there should be a trust vote. So after that a new Chief Minister will be in place,” he claimed.
TTV Dinakaran The 19 AIADMK legislators belonging to the faction led by jailed party General Secretary V.K. Sasikala’s nephew T.T.V. Dinakaran were on Tuesday ferried to a resort in Puducherry to safeguard them from switching their loyalty, after they withdrew support to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami. On Tuesday mor ning, the legislators belonging to the Dinakaran faction met the Governor at Raj Bhavan and submitted a letter expressing their decision to withdraw support to Palaniswami. In order to safeguard them from switching loyalty, the legislators were taken to The Windflower Resorts and Spa in Puducherry. According to sources, 20 rooms have been booked in the resort and a couple of legislators have already checked in. This is the second time the Sasikala-Dinakaran faction is resorting to `resort politics.’
India-US joint army exercise next month New Delhi, Aug 22 (IANS): India-US joint defence exercise Yudh Abhyas, set to be held in the US from September 14-27, will focus on anti-terror operations and will also see discussion on strategic issues between experts on both sides, defence sources said on Tuesday. The exercise comes shortly after India-US-Japan naval exercise Malabar, held in the Bay of Bengal in July, that left China jittery. The theme of the exercise, 13th in the series, is “to build and develop positive military relation and interoperability to conduct counter-terrorism, counterinsurgency and regional security operations and Peace Keeping operations under the UN Charter”. The exercise, set to be held at the Joint Base Lewis Mc-Chord in the US, will have troops from an infantry battalion from the Indian Army’s Central Command, and 5-20 Infantry Battalion based on Stryker of 1 Corps of US’ Pacific Command, participating. Sources said the scope of the exercise will cover various bilateral issues, and it will include a Brigade Headquarter based Command Post Exercise, academic discussions on strategic issues, and combined training. The sources however did not disclose the nature of strategic issues being discussed. “This will be an excellent platform for troops to share operational experiences,” a source said. Last year, the exercise was held in Chaubattia, Uttarakhand.
Punjab on high alert ahead of Dera chief verdict: CM
Amarinder Singh New Delhi/Chandigarh, Aug 22 (IANS): Punjab is on high alert ahead of a Haryana court verdict this week in a rape case against Dera Sacha Sauda chief and has received 75 companies of central forces to maintain law and order, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said on Tuesday. Warning against any attempts to disrupt peace, he told reporters in New Delhi that his government would not allow any disruption of law and order at any count and directed the state police to thwart any attempt to destroy peace. “We have received 75 companies of central forces to maintain security and all steps were being taken to ensure that law and order is not disturbed in any way in the wake of the court orders,” he said. The people should accept any court judgment, said Amarinder Singh, appealing to all to maintain peace. A Special Central Bureau of Investigation court in Haryana’s Panchkula will pronounce its verdict in the rape case against Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh on August 25. The case

hearing has been going on since 2007. The sect chief, who has lakhs of followers in Punjab, Haryana, and other states, has been accused by a former female follower of raping her more than once inside the sprawling Dera campus on the outskirts of Sirsa town in Haryana, 260 km from Chandigarh. Meanwhile, Punjab Director General of Police Suresh Arora on Tuesday visited Bathinda and other sensitive districts bordering Haryana for a first-hand assessment of the security arrangements. He reviewed the arrangements in the district and instructed all police personnel to remain alert to any attempt to disturb the harmony of the state, an official statement said. Besides Bhatinda, Arora also visited Mansa, Moga, Patiala, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib and Mohali towns. Heavy police deployment has been made in Bathinda, which shares its border with Sirsa, where the headquarters of Dera Sacha Sauda are located.

Opposition down
n 2014 the Modi tsunami swept all political parties under its feet while also dealing a serious blow to the Congress from which the latter has yet to recover. The shattering defeat not only stunned the Congress but also exposed the vulnerability of its leaders making up the powerful AICC and the high command made up of the mother-son duo. In the 16th Lok Sabha, the opposition stands badly fragmented. The main opposition, the Congress has been reduced to a dismal, below-50 seat tally and not even entitled to have its leader recognised as leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha. The Congress had 206 seats in the 15th Lok Sabha and in the 16th Lok Sabha, it has only 44 seats. It is interesting to note that the opposition – largely meaning non-NDA political parties are all not entirely against the ruling coalition. For example, the AIADMK, BJD,TRS, YSR Congress etc are not averse to any understanding and symbiotic relationship with the BJP. So also the NCP which continues to baffle. The anti-BJP opposition believed there was an opportunity to cobble a grand alliance to halt Modi in 2019 when Nitish and his JDU was still with the Bihar coalition. the Congress party first initiated talks to stitch a pan-India anti-BJP front, and the opposition has met on many occasions on various pretext. There was a meeting to finalise a joint candidate against NDA’s President-nominee. However, Nitish Kumar went the opposite way by backing BJP candidate Ram Nath Kovind for president. Nitish also gradually moved away form Lalu’s RJD by not backing his son and deputy CM Tejaswhi Yadav over the benami issue which were highlighted in the media through leaks from JDU sources. Nitish also avoided opposition meetings to attend functions organised by Modi. Nitish used to express dismay with the quality of opposition leadership and said he would not board a rudderless ship. He also backed demonetisation and criticised opposition leaders, particularly the Congress for not being proactive rather than being responsive in dealing with the BJP. Further, Nitish felt that non-BJP parties should set their own agenda and force government to respond and not vice-versa. Of course, Nitish’s observations were like red herrings as he backstabbed the very Lalu who brought him back to power. With Nitish with Modi, the question now is, who is there among the opposition to be able to lead the conglomeration of parties in 2019? The big obstacle before the opposition is their inherent rivalry such between TMC and Left in Bengal and Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party in UP, to name a few. With NCP, TRS, YSR Congress, BJD, AIADMK disinclined towards the opposition, any grand alliance will be weakened. Also there is no one who can lead the opposition against Modi. This drawback will impact any possible unified opposition. There could be more like TRS, YSR Congress and NCP who would not like to confront the BJP and so 2019 looks like the opposition will have to fight the Modi tsunami in their own states instead of forging a unified alliance.
DailyDevotion “I Indeed… But He” I indeed baptize you with water…but He…shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and fire. — Matthew 3:11
Have I ever come to a place in my experience where I can say — “I indeed…but He”? Until that moment does come, I will never know what the baptism of the Holy Ghost means. “I indeed” am at an end, I cannot do a thing: “but He” begins just there — He does the things no one else can ever do. Am I prepared for His coming? Jesus cannot come as long as there is anything in the way either of goodness or badness. When He comes am I prepared for Him to drag into the light every wrong thing I have done? It is just there that He comes. Wherever I know I am unclean, He will put His feet; wherever I think I am clean, He will withdraw them. Repentance does not bring a sense of sin, but a sense of unutterable unworthiness. When I repent, I realize that I am utterly helpless; I know all through me that I am not worthy even to bear His shoes. Have I repented like that? Or is there a lingering suggestion of standing up for myself? The reason God cannot come into my life is because I am not through into repentance. “He…shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and fire.” John does not speak of the baptism of the Holy Ghost as an experience, but as a work performed by Jesus Christ. “He shall baptize you.” The only conscious experience those who are baptized with the Holy Ghost ever have is a sense of absolute unworthiness. “I indeed” was this and that; “but He”came, and a marvellous thing happened. Get to the margin where He does everything.

Post-mortem A moment to reflect on!! Stand up and be counted
..be his cause never so spotless.., can try it out with all unspotted soldiers. “This phrase from William Shakespeare’s play, Henry V, means that no matter how good or noble the cause, the fighters for the cause cannot all be expected to be faultless. So the fact that you are doing wrong or have committed a wrong should not prevent you from fighting for a good cause. Every person with an iota of common sense knows that corruption is at the root of every problem that Nagaland faces. Each and every person in Nagaland is both a victim of corruption and a beneficiary of corruption, at the same time. But does a beneficiary of a “Back-door appointment” close his eyes to the pot-holed and almost non-existent roads? Does a corrupt contractor ignore the clogged and overflowing drains in his backyard? Do village chiefs and elders who collude with the authorities in swindling the simple villager put up with the frequent blackouts? Do venial bureaucrats enjoy having to constantly oil up to their political masters, kow-towing to their every whim just so they can abuse their plum postings? Do corrupt legislators enjoy shelling out millions in cash on the dicey probability of being elected? Do “Freedom Fighters” sleep easy at night knowing that the luxuries they enjoy are brought through the sweat, tears and fears of the very people they purport to be fighting for? The questions are endless, but there is only one answer; and the answer is, “It matters not if you are a beneficiary of
or have benefitted from corruption; what matters is that you understand that corruption cannot be allowed to flourish.” Nagaland is riddled with the disease of corruption; we are not HIV positive, but are full-blown AIDS patients. Our immune system, which are the law enforcement agencies, have been overcome with the virus of corruption. We watch helpless as the symptoms of corruption manifest in our bad roads, irregular electricity, collapsed and collapsing bridges, as our jobs are snatched away by unfair means and as the food and fuel for our homes are diverted to build the palaces of the corrupt and to feed and clothe their equally corrupt wives and children in sumptuous luxury. ACAUT can be likened to a doctor trying to treat an AIDS patient. Just as a doctor cannot cure a victim of AIDS, ACAUT cannot cure corruption. But just as a good doctor identifies the symptoms of the various diseases that afflict an AIDS patient and administers symptomatic treatment to the patient; ACAUT identifies the many symptoms of corruption in Nagaland and tries to treat them by approaching the Courts of Law and the Law Enforcement Agencies. But unlike AIDS, corruption can be cured. What ACAUT is doing is trying to awaken our immune system to fight against the virus of corruption. The immune system of Nagaland is comprised of each and every citizen of Nagaland. It is for every person of Nagaland to decide if he or she will succumb to corruption or fight against it, there is no other way.
ACAUT transcends any tribe, political party, faction, union, association or organisation; it represents an ideal, the Ideal of a Nagaland free from the Monster of Corruption. ACAUT has called for a Mass Rally against Corruption on the 25th.of this month of August. Why? To show the unhearing and unheeding Half-Wits in power that THE PEOPLE OF NAGALAND CANNOT BE IGNORED, THAT EVERYTHING DERIVES FROM US; THEIR POWER AND T H E I R W E A LT H . A N D THAT THEIR POMP AND LUXURY BELONGS TO US. THAT NAGAS ARE NOT DOGS AND THEY ARE NOT OUR MASTERS. I am not a member of ACAUT, not because I don’t want to join them, but because I have too many detractors who are just waiting to put a tag on my opinions in an effort to nullify them. But I will be there on the 25th.of August to show my complete support for ACAUT and the Ideal that ACAUT stands for. I will be singing along with them, for what I lack in tune and harmony, I intend to make up for in volume. FOR ACAUT REPRESENTS THE SOLUTION TO OUR PROBLEMS, AND YOUR PRESENCE IS COMPULSORY IF YOU WISH TO BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION; FOR IF YOU ARE NOT PART OF THE SOLUTION, YOU ARE THE PROBLEM. STAND UP AND BE COUNTED! God save our Nagaland Kahuto Chishi Sumi Akukau, Hevishe Village Khaghaboto Range, Dimapur, (Kahuto107@gmail.com)
T
he recent crises in the DAN led government of Nagaland, has unveiled the true intentions of our elected leaders. The race for power and money has taken centre stage in Naga politics. This kind of self-serving politics being played in the open has tarnished the image of the Naga people before the world.Perhaps, the people need to remind the elected leaders that they were elected to look after the welfare of the people instead of getting embroiled in one political drama after the other. All these dramas clearly indicate that our elected leaders are more concerned about personal interest rather than the interest of the people they represent. This race for power and money to further their self interest is hampering the smooth functioning of our state. The elected representatives of the people of Nagaland is to represent the people of Nagaland, look into the interest of the people, bring development to the state competing with mainland India, bring peace, make the people’s life comfortable and work to move forward for our better future of Nagaland State instead of rushing to gain power without considering the interest of the people’s cry for peace and development. When we take a look at the present reality of our State, we cannot help but lament at the sorry state of affairs that is becoming from bad to worse. Infact this Christian dominated State is fast becoming the corruption capital of India. A quick look at the present condition of roads all over Nagaland reflects the level of governance by our elected representatives. We are made to watch and witness our beloved State of Nagaland being plagued by scams after scams and the government silencing any voice of protest by using any means at its disposal. Greed has overridden the ideology, principles and values of our elected representatives. In their pursuit for wealth and power, they turn a blind eye to the disastrous effects of their actions on the overall
functioning of the state. As a result, our state is in chaos, bridges are being damaged due to negligence making the people’s life miserable, roads left unattended making it unmotorable, drainages and sanitation ignored making it flood prone and outbreak of diseases, Government offices are not functioning properly, salaries of the government servants are not disbursed on time, government treasurer empty, development non-existent and privatization is out of question. In such a scenario, we the general public as responsible citizens should ponder on what our elected representatives are doing to us and to our state. This race and hunger for power, which makes them (elected representatives) blind, has left our state on the brink of total system failure instead of bringing development and peace, which they are expected of. Let us open our eyes, think and analize very carefully about why this is happening, how they end up being elected to power? Are we electing our representatives in true democratic ways and spirit? It is hightime for us to think beyond for our better future and the future of our upcoming young ones and act accordingly keeping in mind that ours is a democratic state. Let us take the platform of clean election and allow the forthcoming election to be held in true democratic ways and spirit. Let this forthcoming election be the 1st election of fair and clean election, creating history so that the right candidate is elected to bring all round development and take our state forward in the right direction. Money centered and boot capturing election is the root of all corruption which breeds more corruption. Let us eradicate this menace and undemocratic system before it destroys the fabric of our democratic principles and values. Sungit Jamir, Antsutsubo Ward, Changtongya Town

andh, various forms of strike, dharna, gherao, picket, economic blockade, ultimatum etc. etc. which were unseen, unknown and unheard during the society of yore have come to stay increasingly inside the body politics in our time. Almost literally no day goes by without one after another, staging either in our streets, or in front of offices, or institutions for one reason or another, like a game of musical chairs. They are intended to put the authority which represents the State under tremendous pressure in order to get their grievances ventilated or charter of demands accepted, of which some of them are unrealistic, unacceptable and even illogical demands that no government on earth can solve them. These are used in numerous ways which is difficult to describe them all. We often witness them followed by violence, resulting in the loss of human lives, arson, mass destruction of properties etc. Added to all these woes which besets the Naga society, the whole political world today is one of intrigue, conspiracy, aggrandizement, pocket–lining, selfishness and ruthlessness where we often see corrupt and base men parading in the streets as honest politicians for honest government. And what injury might have done to the society while pursuing their selfish goals, what destruction might have been brought to the people and what irreparable damages have been done to the country’s future, the politicians of this country have little or nothing to care about, except how to grab “power” for themselves. Although the steam has cooled down, the specter of fear will continue to hunt those leaders who were responsible for the 1st February violent agitation that resulted in the killing of 2 youths and colossal destruction of public properties, worth crores of rupees. Incitement to racial, religious and ethnic hatred in the circumstances where the incitement is intended to lead to violence for political mileage or personal selfish-interest by taking the masses to the streets is essentially evil and sinful. situation carefully, the entire operation that was worked up throughout the state made to appear as if it was a carefully conceived and calibrated conspiracy in which enormous pre-planning was involved. The end-result of agitation also made to appear as though the surgical operation was successful but the patient could not be resuscitated. This chaotic situation created was something like we sometimes want only disturbed an ants’ nest, and with wild amusement, watching the scurry confusion of ants that resulted. Had the 30th January agreement that was arrived at in between the then government under T.R Zeliang and the JCC through the mediation of NBCC – a major Christian denomination in Nagaland – on the condition that the ULB elections would be put off for 2 months within which period the entire issue pertaining to ULB elections would be reviewed was binding in letter and spirit, violence of that magnitude would not have been occurred. But it had happened – not unavoidably. The present Chief Minister, T. R. Zeliang, in whose time during his first tenure of Chief Minister Ship had generated this heated controversy, should have been constrained from acting against the wishes of people, if it was prompted by the sentiments of humanity and a love for justice. Even a totalitarian dictator is constrained by the constitution, legal precedent, political requirement and the force of mass opinion. The undiminished fury of the mob that went berserk for nearly one month, paralyzing the functioning of offices all over the State was not just a protest against the elections to the ULB along with 33% reservation for women alone, but the general mass had seized it as an opportunity to unleash their angers accumulated over the years against the authority due to poor governance. In such an impoverished land, filled with voices of simmering and resentment, many other reservoirs burst too – a grim reminder of the fact that what holds a civil society together is a set of norms and restraints that provides both justice and equality, and
when these erode there is no way of holding violence at bay. And thus, the cause of suffering and exploitation among the poor and destitute crawling up the walls of despairs, anguish and anger so slow and unnoticeable for so long, the deep pangs of conscience built over the years, suddenly find channels of expression and release. Trouble over the reservation issue – whether job reservation or otherwise – is not a new phenomenon. It has occurred time and again with a varying degree of physical violence in several parts of the country during the past several decades due to government’s inconsistent and clumsy handling of the reservation questions. The tragedy is that politicians of this country often play politics with issues for vote bank, instead of addressing them with enormous respect for reality. The attitude of certain political parties of this country is: “You give us vote, we will give you right”. This is how our rights are being traded or purchased with votes. And this is how our egoistic attitude in politics often takes to toll on the country’s future because they use every incident to create trouble for vote bank. If Indians wanted to build a strong and stable nation, then the evil of vote bank politics must go. Without deeper reflection, it was clearly understood that the February agitation that was sparked off into violence in the most virulent form under cloak of protecting the “Nagas’ rights” was nothing but power-grabbing game. In a fluid situation of growing political instability today, it is not unexpected for the dissent group even within the same party to hatch a plot to destabilize the government for grabbing power. As a matter of fact, dissidence always exist even within the same party, mostly the result of clash of personalities, clash of personal opportunism, race for cabinet berth, race for the most prizedpost, i.e. Chief Minister and what is more to be added is the unhealthy rivalries amongst the major tribes for political domination – all these shames conjoined in the recent agitation. It was clearly understood that the
avaricious desire for power of some power-mongers were behind who orchestrated the February violent agitation that was forced upon the innocent public to take up the cudgels to the streets, even using terror tactics. How long does this politics of buffoonery, which I call it as an “awkward game”, will go on in Nagaland? I can say it will continue to go on and on until the Nagas have finally destroyed themselves. Indeed, we are already being destroyed ourselves due to our blind passion, greed, jealousy, revenge and our habits of thought and the flood of lies that had let loose upon our people. What is left with the Nagas today is nothing but a heap of fragmentary bits. Who plays politics right in Nagaland? Who are the people trying to put the bits and pieces together of the broken Naga society? There is none; for, every Naga has entered into rat-race as materialism has gripped many Nagas, and therefore, politics in Nagaland is fast becoming a space of absurd. On the controversial issue of NMA 2001 along with 33% reservation for women in the ULB elections, it should have been internalized and resolved by the Naga leaders themselves who are capable of tackling any issue, instead of rushing to the highest appellate courts in the country for the simple reason that no conflict is irreconcilable. Why our elected members have been sleeping over this sensitive issue for the past many years, without bothering to resolve the differences well ahead of time to be scheduled for the ULB elections; and that too, a government without an opposition which could have been secured a consensus amongst the members on the issue without any difficulty? One is therefore tempted to ask as to whether the issue was deliberated in all seriousness before passing resolution in the assembly, in context of:(1) What the Bible speaks about the position of women in relation to man because we are living under two laws - mutable and immutable laws which means changing and unchanging laws. The fact that we are living under changing law
cannot be totally ignored the unchanging law while deciding the issue how it should be like; (2) What the Naga tradition speaks about the status of women in a patriarchal society like ours where men certainly have a higher status over women in early Naga culture; (3) Whether some clauses of NMA 2001 actually infringes upon Article 371(A) as alleged by those who opposed ULB elections; (4) Whether Article 243(T) Clause 3 which is a Constitutional mandatory provision, can be defied by the State government from its implementation or not; (5) Whether the demand of 33% reservation for women in the ULBs can actually stimulate women in socio-economic, political and education interest that would benefit the Naga society; (6) Whether the demand
of 33% for women is befitting to the situation of the time because such empowerment is meaningless unless women are properly educated first, as education in itself is an empowering tool; (7) And now the fundamental question before us is: whether we accede to the demand so that the world sees us that there is perceptible change in the position of women in their fight for gender equality. Or, should we keep our womenfolk at home in a slothful dullness, allowing them each day to sink deeper into lifeless traditionalism? I believe all these and others will provide an answer to our perplexity in a situation where government everywhere is running in confusion because their decisions and actions which are not guided by sufficient light are rough and coarse. Reader’s Post Sir,
The cocks crow
The tussle between the two cocks, NPFs, has become the main course of dinner in our state politics, recently. And there seems to be as much alteration in terms of economical and infrastructural movement as it did, just the other day we were snoozing. A shift though, in virtual technology, is being witnessed headed by our CM and those who are to follow suit. This stalemate has in ways stalled our political exploration and everyone eagerly awaits the court’s call/ verdict, so that we could move on together to take the next step; as soon; as the call is heard. The two cocks has both shared and expressed facts and event evaluations over which one has the legitimate ownership over the party and which is the phony, after which will be a new day for both; the two and the people. The public are partially convinced with both their views and statements and has only left it under the hands of the right/ legal authority to decide on the matter. And as the two cock crows, and since we the public have been rather cornered in futility; it remains for all, whether to doze off and let the night have its way with us all or keep awake and witness in bliss; all; the dawn. We are hopeful that this matter would be resolved at the earliest so that both the two and the people could indulge more into progressive politics. Meanwhile, the momentous ‘mother of rallies’ called on by ACAUT is the deliverance the people [whole of Nagas] needs from the scourge of corruption our society is entangled in. This is a call for the ‘empowerment of people’ and an assertion of our democracy. Let this be the awakening the people have desired for long, and may ACAUT find the strength to further lead us towards a progressive society. Liberal Democratic Party of Nagaland (LDPN)

DIMAPUR, AUG 22 (NPN): Nagaland Medical Dealers Association (NMDA) has alleged that an individual posing as National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) agent was visiting pharmacies in Dimapur particularly Diphupar area asking about the relevant documents for checking and harassing the shopkeepers and also demanding money. perimeter of four deleterious tenets i.e. autocratic, dictatorial, undemocratic and unconstitutional. Further NPC CEC said suspensions and expulsions of the party legislators became the order of the day while Dr. Shürhozelie “abusively converted” the NPF party into a family fiefdom. In order to save the party from further destructions and mutilations, it said more than 2/3rd absolute majority of NPF legislatures party selected Neiphiu Rio, three-time chief minister and MP (Lok Sabha) as the interim president. Later after the 15-day grace period to Dr. Shurhozelie to step down expired, it was resolved that Neiphiu Rio would no longer be deemed as the interim president but a full fledged president of NPF. Further, NPF CEC also endorsed the decision of the president to convene the NPF general convention on September 20, 2017 at Dimapur and extended support and endorsed the constitution of search committee for the selection of president and central office bearers (COB). NPF CEC lamented on the ongoing leadership dispute within the party and appealed to the general public not to panic but to remain steadfast with the leadership of Neiphiu Rio, president NPF and TR Zeliang, chief minister as to insure peace and tranquillity. NEW DELHI, Aug 22 (PTI): The goods and services tax in India will benefit the lower and lower-middle income class as it is likely to reduce the tax rate on goods, a blog posted on Asian Development Bank’s website said. It will mitigate significantly the negative impact of goods and services tax (GST) on the “bottom half ” of the population, said the blogpost written by Mukul Asher, Professorial Fellow, Lew Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. In general, GST is likely to reduce the tax rate on goods as compared to previously, while tax rates on services are expected to increase, the blog said. As households progress towards higher income brackets, the share of household budget spent on services increases and on goods declines. “So, the above overall trend would exhibit tendency towards lower burden for low and lower middle-income households, while the reverse is likely for upper middle income and high income households.

Donald Trump warns Historic solar eclipse turns day Two killed in Italy quake, three Pak for support to terror into night across United States children rescued from rubble
Angela Merkel, who has often stayed on Ischia, sent a message to the Italian government expressing her country’s “heartfelt closeness to those affected (by the quake) and to rescuers.” Italian President Sergio Mattarella phoned the mayors of Casamicciola and Ischia’s other quake-hit village, Lacco Ameno, to express “his condolences for the victims and solidarity with those affected”, saying he would visit “as soon as possible,” the Quirinale Palace said in a statement on Tuesday. The European Union’s humanitarian aid commissioner Christos Styilianides tweeted that the EU was “fully ready to help Italy following the earthquake in #Ischia”. Geologists and architects in Italy have blamed illegal building on Ischia for the collapse of residential buildings during the quake, while the local mayor have denied this charge.

It has much to lose by continuing to harbour terrorists,” he said, in a apparent warning to Pakistan. The US President reached out to India seeking an enhanced role for New Delhi, especially in the economic field, to bring peace and stability in Afghanistan. India, the world’s largest democracy, is a key security and economic partner of the United States, he said.

At the White House, despite all the warnings from experts about the risk of eye damage, President Donald Trump took off his eclipse glasses and looked directly at the sun. It was the most-observed and most-photographed eclipse in history, with many Americans staking out prime viewing spots and settling onto blankets and lawn chairs to watch, especially along the path of totality - the line of deep shadow created when the sun is completely obscured except for the ring of light known as the corona. The shadow - a corridor just 60 to 70 miles (96 to 113 kilometers) wide - came ashore in Oregon and then traveled

At least two people were killed and a third person was in a critical condition while another 39 were injured and some 2,600 were left homeless by the temblor, which hit the volcanic island off Naples just before 9pm on Monday. It is the height of the tourist season on Ischia, and Italian television showed visitors fleeing bars, hotels and restaurants to take refuge in parks when the undersea quake struck. Many spooked holidaymakers decided to cut short their vacations and Italian authorities began organising ferries to bring tourists back to the mainland early on Tuesday. A one-hour ferry ride from Naples, Ischia is popular with German and British tourists and is famed for its thermal waters. German Chancellor

Sheridan, Aug 22 (Agencies): Millions of Americans gazed in wonder through telescopes, cameras and disposable protective glasses Monday as the moon blotted out the sun in the first full-blown solar eclipse to sweep the US from coast to coast in nearly a century. The temperature dropped, birds quieted down, crickets chirped and the stars came out in the middle of the day as the line of darkness raced 2,600 miles (4,200 kilometers) across the continent in about 90 minutes, bringing forth oohs, aahs, shouts and screams. In Boise, Idaho, where the sun was more than 99 percent blocked, people clapped and whooped, and the street lights came on briefly, while in Nashville, Tennessee, people craned their necks at the sky and knocked back longneck beers at Nudie’s Honky Tonk bar. At the Nashville Zoo, the giraffes and rhinos started running around crazily

Ischia, Aug 22 (IANS/ AKI): Firemen on Tuesday rescued an 11-year-old boy more than 16 hours after his home on the Italian resort island of Ischia was destroyed by magnitude 4 earthquake that left two women dead. The boy’s two younger brothers were pulled out alive from the rubble earlier in the day. “Ciro is safe too!”, tweeted firemen at 2.15 p.m. local time. Ciro’s rescue from beneath the rubble of the family’s home in the village of Casamicciola came after firemen pulled out his baby brother, seven-month-yearold Pasquale at 4 a.m. and seven-year-old Mattia at around midday. The two brothers survived in an air pocket under the rubble after they sheltered under their bunk beds when the house began to collapse and rescuers managed to lower bottles of water and a flashlight down to them. All three brothers were alert when they were rescued but were taken to hospital for checks. The boys’ mother, who is reportedly pregnant, managed to escape through a window when the quake struck while their father was pulled out from beneath masonry soon afterwards. Italy’s Premier Paolo Gentiloni congratulated civil protection agency chief Angelo Borrelli and fire chief Bruno Frattasi on the rescue of the three young brothers but said the country was “united in grief ” for the victims of the Ischia quake. “Italy is united in grief
Washington, Aug 22 (PTI): The US today ruled out a hasty withdrawal of its troops from Afghanistan as President Donald Trump warned Pakistan of consequences if it continues to provide safe havens to terror groups and sought an enhanced role for India to bring peace in the war-torn country. Trump, in a primetime televised address to the nation, laid out his South Asia policy saying a “critical part” of it was to further develop US’ strategic partnership with India. He said after a “comprehensive review”, it has been decided that the American strategy in Afghanistan and South Asia will change dramatically. “A core pillar of our new strategy is a shift from a time-based approach to one based on conditions. I’ve said many times how counterproductive it is for the United States to announce in advance, the dates we intend to begin, or end, military operations,” Trump said in his address. “We will not talk about numbers of troops or our plans for further military activities,” Trump said as he announced his South Asia policy in front of about 2,000 people from all five services and top officials of his administration. Bollywood celebs hail judgement on triple talaq
T
he Supreme Court ruling on triple talaq will start a new chapter in empowerment of Muslim women in India, say Bollywood celebrities who hailed the verdict on Tuesday. The apex court, by a 3:2 majority judgment, held triple talaq being practised by the Muslim community as “unconsti-
tutional”, “arbitrary” and “not part of Islam”. Here’s what some Bollywood celebrities tweeted: Anupam Kher: Some decisions are not for libtards, pappus or even Bhakts. The decision of triple talaq is for the win of women empowerment. Madhur Bhandarkar:
Welcome judgement by Supreme Court to declare triple talaq as unconstitutional. This will start a new chapter in empowerment of Muslim women. Dia Mirza: A win for democracy! Historic day for women’s rights in our country. Equality, triple talaq, human rights, Supreme Court. Kabir Bedi: Since Supreme Court has declared triple talaq “unconstitutional”, why does Parliament have to enact a new law to void it. Gautam Rode: A verdict that I am proud of India! A verdict which was much needed! Ending triple talaq shall lead towards equality! Luv S Sinha: Good to read that triple talaq has been deemed unconstitutional. A victory for Muslim women and another step towards equality.
Triple talaq judgement a victory for brave Muslim women: Shabana
Veteran actress Shabana Azmi has welcomed the Supreme Court’s ruling on triple talaq and says the judgement is a victory for brave Muslim women in the country. “I welcome the Supreme Court judgement on instant Triple Talaq. It’s a victory for brave Muslim women who have waged a battle against it for years,” Shabana tweeted on Tuesday. The apex court, by a 3:2 majority judgment, held triple talaq being practised by the Muslim community as “unconstitutional”, “arbitrary” and “not part of Islam”. Shabana is also a social activist and is active in supporting child survival and fighting AIDS and injustice in real life. She had participated in several plays and demonstrations denouncing communalism. Among the social groups whose causes she has advocated are slum dwellers, displaced Kashmiri Pandit migrants and victims of the earthquake at Latur. The 1993 Mumbai riots appalled her and she emerged as a forceful critic of religious extremism. In 1998, the United Nations Population Fund appointed her as its Goodwill Ambassador for India. Sterling equalised for City with eight minutes to play and there was still time
for Morgan Schneiderlin to receive his marching orders for a second booking after a challenge on Sergio Aguero. The hosts squandered two good chances to go ahead as first Aguero uncharacteristically hesitated in front of goal, allowing Phil Jagielka to make a last-ditch challenge, before David Silva’s low drive struck the base of Jordan Pickford’s post. Victoria Azarenka
NEW YORK, Aug 22 (Agencies): Two-time US Open runner-up Victoria Azarenka confirmed her withdrawal from the tournament on Monday amid a custody battle concerning her eight-month-old son. Azarenka, who signalled last week she may miss the tournament rather than travel to New York without her son Leo, confirmed her withdrawal in a statement. “I am sadly unable to compete in this year’s US Open due to my ongoing family situation that I am working through,” the Belarus star said. “While I will dearly miss being in New York and playing in one of my favorite tournaments

He turned home Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s cross to become only the second Premier League player after Alan Shearer to reach 200 goals. It got worse for City just before half-time when Walker was dismissed for two quick-fire yellow cards. His first came after a mistimed tackle on Leighton Baines and the City summer signing was dismissed
where I have enjoyed some of the best moments in my career, I am already looking forward to being back next year.” The Belarusian reached the final in 2012 and 2013 where she was beaten by Serena Williams on both occasions. The 28-year-old said last week she would skip Flushing Meadows rather than be separated from her baby. It came after a Los Angeles judge presiding in her custody case with the boy’s father, Billy McKeague, said the child could not leave California until the matter had been resolved. Azarenka, ranked 204 after a layoff while pregnant and after her son’s birth, played last month at Wimbledon, reaching the round of 16 before losing to second-ranked Simona Halep. “Shortly after Wimbledon, Leo’s father and I separated and as we work to resolve some of the legal processes, the way things stand now is that the only way I can play in the US Open this year is if I leave Leo behind in California, which I’m not willing to do,” Azarenka said last week.
for a second booking after backing into CalvertLewin. City created the better opportunities after the break despite being a man down as substitute Bernardo Silva snatched at a volley, Sterling fired over and Pickford smartly kept out Danilo’s low effort. Everton club-record signing Gylfi Sigurdsson came on for his debut but had little impact before Sterling scored with an instinctive volley following a poor clearing header by Mason Holgate. City pushed for a winner after Schneiderlin’s red card and went close when Bernardo’s measured pass almost picked out David Silva but Davy Klaassen’s expertly-timed interception denied the Spaniard. City head coach Pep Guardiola praised his players as they forced a draw despite being down to 10 players. “We tried to win the game even when it was 10 against 11. Nobody can say we didn’t try,” he was quoted as saying by City’s website. “It’s similar to a lot of games last season, it’s sad because we wanted to start well at home.”
