Rain fury in India: Death toll over 1000 Demand for more City Bus services in Dmu Staff Reporter

At least 28 dead in Himachal & Punjab; 22 missing in U’khand NEW DELHI, AUG 18 (AGENCIES): The death toll from floods sweeping India has climbed above 1,000, and affected over 18 lakh people till August 15. The latest victim was Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab as cloudbursts, landslides triggered by heavy downpour wreaked havoc in these states. On Sunday, at least 22 people, including two Nepalese, were killed and nine others injured in rain-related incidents in Himachal Pradesh, while three people died and 22 went missing following a cloudburst in Uttarakhand. Three people lost their lives in Punjab. A f lood aler t was sounded in Delhi, Haryana and Punjab as Yamuna and other rivers were in spate. CNTC directs units not to attend NH Aug 23 meeting D I M A P U R , AU G 1 8 (NPN): Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) has directed its constituent units not to attend the meeting called by Naga Hoho on August 23 at Mokokchung as three tribes – Aos, Lothas and Sumis– had disassociated themselves from it and no longer part of the hoho. The council’s vice-president, Hukiye Yeptho, also made it clear to all and sundry that “so-called” search committee members from the three tribes had not been endorsed by their respective tribe hohos and therefore termed any selection or election by the committee as null and void as it was all purely on their own vested interests. Meanwhile, CNTC has asked it Dimapur-based units – Ao Senso Telongjem Dimapur, Lotha Hoho Dimapur and Western Sumi Hoho– to send at least 10 representatives each to Hotel Saramati on August 20 for the installation programme of the second council team. NH had called for a meeting on August 23 to deliberate over the report of search committee (nominate/elect new team) and finalise its way forward and also to reach out to the dissociated tribe hohos.

roads, including 13 national highways, across the state were blocked fully or partially due to landslides. Traffic from Mandi to Kullu has been diverted through the Kataula-Bajaura road as the highway along the swollen Beas River was submerged in water. Authorities have also issued flood warnings in parts of Northern India. Delhi has also been put on high alert as 430817cusec water was released from the Hathini Kund barrage in Haryana, further raising the water level of Yamuna, which was already flowing at a dangerous level. A high alert has been sounded in the Yamuna

Nagar administration following the release of water. The catchment area has been evacuated after water entered the houses of locals living in the area. According to Home ministry data, the death toll from rain-related incidents across the country from June to August 15 had reached 1,058. Over 150 people have died in Kerala, the secondhighest after Maharashtra (245 deaths), as it faces extraordinary damage with authorities being forced to release water from dams because of torrential rain. The flood death counts are increasing year on year: from

Constructive criticism welcome: NH speaker, former members D I M A P U R , AU G 1 8 (NPN): Two former leaders of Naga Hoho (NH) and its speaker have stated that all references to the hoho should not be taken as negativity, as observed in the sharp reaction given by present incumbents to the opinion expressed by chief minister Neiphiu Rio. In a statement, former president Keviletuo Kewhuo, former general secretary Mutsikhoyo Yhobu and speaker Kenyuseng Tep reminded that every Naga from any walk of life was a stakeholder in NH, and thus opinions and constructive criticism from Naga leaders were solicited for “our interest”. Rather, they appealed to all Naga leaders – politicians, national workers, bureaucrats, social workers, etc, – to come forward in contributing towards building a common platform and “consolidating ourselves”. They appealed to all

Naga tribe organisations to give serious thought and act to bring about understanding among “ourselves” keeping in mind the ideals of Nagas living together as people and face issues with truth and principles, especially at this crucial point of time when the people were at political crossroads and needed to voice in unison. Referring to various statements published recently in the media and the meeting convened by the “so called” NH’s executive council on August 16 that was postponed to August 23, they said it was quite unfortunate and regrettable that owing to matters that transpired during the tenure of president Chuba Ozukum most tribe bodies, which were its constituent units, declared their disassociation at one point of time or the other, adding there was no organisation now from the State. 936 in 2016 to 1,200 in 2017. Rain fury this time has been severe across most parts of the country than usual. Maharashtra recorded 245 flood-related deaths, followed by Kerala (155), West Bengal (154), Bihar (130), Gujarat (107) and 94 each in Assam and Karnataka, according to an assessment of the Home ministry. So far, state and central agencies have evacuated over 18 lakh people. Over 7,800 relief camps have been opened in 152 districts of nine states. The Centre has deployed 101 NDRF teams and 57 from Army, IAF and Navy along with six copters for rescue and relief operations as losses start mounting. At least a dozen districts in Kerala stare at a crisis. Around 7.5 lakh people were evacuated across 22 districts in Maharashtra and 305 relief camps are providing temporary shelter to the homeless. Over Rs. 6900 cr released: Central and state governments have opened their purses for rescue and relief operations as floods continue to cause immense damage and loss of lives in several states. Till Friday, the Centre and states together

released over Rs 6,900 crore in eight states to safeguard human lives even as estimation of economic loss is yet to begin. India is among the world’s top five countries in suffering economic loss due to natural calamities, yet it has not changed its approach towards building resilient infrastructure or safeguarding its population from imminent disasters that has only increased in intensity year after year. Climate change is making development highly risky, particularly in lowermiddle income countries like India, according to a study released by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) in 2018. The report had said India suffered economic loss of $80 billion during the 20-year period between 1998 to 2017. “It is also clear that economic losses suffered by low and lower-middle income countries have crippling consequences for their future development and undermine our efforts to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, in particular the eradication of poverty,” the UNDRR report had said.

D I M A P U R , AU G 1 8 (NPN): Over a decade and half after reintroduction, the city bus service between Dimapur to Chümoukedima had brought much relief to the commuting public and as a result there is demand for introduction of more buses to other routes. Currently, there are 11 buses, comprising three Pink buses (for females) and non-Pink buses for general passengers. On an average, seven busses operate every day– two from Chümoukedima and five from NST station(near railway station). Fares are charged according to sectors ranging from Rs 5 to 25, depending on locations. A ride from NST station to Burma Camp area costs Rs 5; to Padumpukhri Rs 10; to Diphupar area Rs 15 to Chümoukedima first gate Rs 20 and beyond Chümoukedima first gate Rs 25. There is growing demand for introduction of city bus service from NST to DC Office/ Firing Range areas. This Reporter took a ride in one City Bus from NST station to Chümouke-

dima first gate, to ascertain how the system worked and the impact on the commuting public. The seats inside the bus was filled and no one was seen standing. Normally the city buses are always filled. The present system appears random as there are no scheduled bus stops. The buses stop anywhere to pick up or drop passengers. Another aspect that was glaring was that tickets were issued only when asked for by passengers. In the event that passengers don’t insist on tickets, then there would be no means of ascertaining how much money has been collected. Most of the commuters were students who were very relieved and grateful for the bus services. Speaking to one of them, the student

said the best thing was that the fare charged was very nominal when compared with autorickshaw fares. Normally an auto fare from Dimaput to Chümoukedima is Rs.100 whereas it is only Rs.25 by city bus. The student also hoped that more routes would be introduced and that all school and college going students would be greatly benefitted if that happened. Another passenger, a woman said the city bus service was a boon for women’s safety. She said women now felt safer travelling by city bus and hoped the government would add more pink buses. An elderly woman who also spoke to this Reporter said that commuting by auto used to be very challeng(Cont’d on p-7) ing.

More condemn Aug 16 killing

DIMAPUR, AUG 18 (NPN): More organisations have come out to condemn the coldblooded murder of “major” Toishe Yeptho of NSCN (I-M) at his residence at Purana Bazaar ‘B’ here on August 16. NTC: In a statement issued by its president Toniho Yepthomi and general secretary Nribemo Ngullie, Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) said it was shocked to learn about the brutal and coldblooded assassination of Toishe Yeptho in the presence of his family members. Mentioning that taking law in one’s hand and killing fellow brother without reservation was cowardly act, the council strongly condemned the killing. It said life could be given only by God and taking one’s own image of life was barbaric and an act of beast. (Cont’d on p-7)

Asteroid 1990 MU could come close to Earth

New Delhi, Aug 18 (Agencies): A huge asteroid which is classified to be as big as the one which hit the Earth millions of years ago and led to extinction of dinosaurs is feared to come dangerously close to earth in the coming decade. The asteroid known as 1990 MU, is presently orbiting around Sun and may come dangerously close to the Earth by June 6, 2027, The Indian Express reported. According to the data available with the Center for Near Earth Object Studies, which is a part of NASA’s

Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the 4953 (1990 MU) asteroid will be at its closest distance from our planet, which is 0.03083 astronomical units (AU), which is approximately 4.61 million kilometers from the Earth. An AU can be defined as the distance between the Sun and Earth. The 1990 MU asteroid is estimated to be around 4-9 kilometres in diameter, which puts it in the same category as the space rock which brought an end to dinosaurs the Earth, according to a report by Express.co.uk.

Even though it is approaching from a relatively safe distance, our blue planet is still in danger of suffering an impact event which might be caused by 4953 (1990 MU) asteroid because of certain factors in the space. In case the path of the asteroid gets altered, it might lead to a direct collision course with the Earth, another report by International Business Times said. One of the factors which might affect the asteroid is a gravitational keyhole. This is a particular area in space where a planet’s gravity can alter the orbit of a passing asteroid in such a way that the asteroid would collide with that planet on a given future orbital pass. If the asteroid goes through a keyhole while travelling across space, it might get nudged into a path that may bring it straight to the Earth, the report explained. K Y M C

NRC mulls action against govt official

Guwahati, Aug 18 (PTI): The NRC authority is considering recommending strong action against a senior Assam government official for alleged irregularities in checking documents of people from Chamaria and some nearby areas in Kamrup district after which re-verification had to be done, sources close to the development said. Kamrup Deputy Commissioner Kamal Kumar Baishya has sent a report to the NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela about two months back on the alleged irregularities by a former Circle Officer of Chamaria under his district which came to light in 2018. The report noted how the then Circle Officer allegedly made all the affected people Original Inhabitants (OI) only to reduce his workload, the sources claimed. H e h a d a l l e ge d ly ticked the OI column for all the people, including Hindus and Muslims, in the verification list, which lessened his burden for

cross-checking the documents as well as the tedious process of finding out the family tree of the applicants, they said. “It is not a corruptionrelated case. The DC’s enquiry has found out that the official’s quality of verification was very poor and he was not sincere about his duties,” a source said. The sources told PTI that the irregularities were initially detected around September 2018, after which the Kamrup district administration swung into action and found that it was affecting the entire Chamaria revenue circle. The NRC (National Register of Citizens) authority was then informed about the development and after much deliberations, it was decided to hold reverification in these areas. “It was a good proactive decision by the NRC authority to hold the reverification process. “This shows that they are serious about bringing out an error-free NRC within the deadline,” a source close to the devel-

Five new fish species discovered in Arunachal

Itanagar, Aug 18 (PTI): Researchers of the Rajiv Gandhi University here have recently discovered five new fish species in various districts of the state. The scientific names of the newly-discovered fish species are Mystus prabini, found in Sinkin and Dibang rivers in Lower Dibang Valley district and Exostoma kottelati, found in Ranga river in Lower Subansiri district, a release by the university said. Other discovered species are Creteuchiloglanis tawangensis, found in the Tawangchu river in Tawang district, Garra ranganensis, found in Ranga river and Physoschistura harkishorei, found in

Dibang and Lohit rivers in Lower Dibang Valley district, it said. The team was led by Prof D N Das of the fisheries and aquatic ecology research wing of the Zoology department of the university. “Majority of the water bodies in remote areas of the state are still not easily accessible to the researchers due to a difficult terrain that includes rain forests, steep hills besides communication problems,” Das said. He, however, said his research team is optimistic that meticulous exploration may result in more discoveries of new fish species from the state in the future.

opment said. The NRC authority has taken the report very seriously and is likely to recommend strong action against the erring bureaucrat, who is an Assam Civil Services official, the sources confirmed. No official comment could be obtained from the NRC Office as the Supreme Court had barred them from talking to the media. The deadline to publish the final NRC is August 31. The errant official was transferred from Chamaria early last year. A new Circle Officer was appointed in Chamaria, but he left the place within months seeking a voluntary transfer. In the second half of 2018, the current Circle Officer was appointed. She along with the deputy commissioner informed the NRC authority about the irregularities and started the process of reverification. Calls made to the Kamrup Deputy Commissioner remained unanswered. From August

3 afternoon, notices for reverification were served across the south of Kamrup district to about 33,000 people, asking them to appear within 48 hours in NRC Seva Kendras (NSKs), almost 400-500 km away from their place of residence, in several upper Assam districts. The sources said that as NRC process is timebound and the final document has to be published by August 31, all the reverification work has to be completed as soon as possible. “The NSKs in entire lower Assam were already loaded with their scheduled reverification process. As there were fewer claims and objections in upper Assam, so the NSKs there were relatively less occupied. “That is why the authorities decided to hold the reverification of these unscheduled cases in upper Assam districts. “The only thing is that the notices should have been served to the people by giving them some more

Modi seeks Bhutan’s cooperation in new sectors

PM Narendra Modi in Bhutan

rations of the Indian youth. He asked the “brightest minds” of Bhutan to work hard and take the Himalayan nation to great heights. “There is no better time to be young than now.” Pointing out that India-Bhutan cooperation in hydro-power and energy was exemplary, Modi stressed on building relationship between people of both the countries, and showed India’s eagerness in cooperation in new frontiers -- from schools to space and digital payments to disaster management. “Our cooperation in all these sectors will have a direct impact on young friends like you.” Mentioning that it was crucial to connect scholars and academics beyond borders

in this day and age, Modi said: “Cooperation between India’s National Knowledge Network and Bhutan’s DrukREN, which became a reality yesterday, will serve this purpose. “It will provide secure and fast connectivity between our universities, research institutions, libraries, healthcare and agricultural institutions. I urge you all to make full use of this facility... As Bhutan soars high in its endeavours, your 1.3 billion Indian friends will not just look on and cheer you with pride and happiness. They will partner you, share with you and learn from you.” He said the world today offers more opportunities than ever before. “You have the power and po-

tential to do extraordinary things, which will impact generations to come. Find your real calling and pursue it with full passion,” he said, as some of the students in the large hall nodded in agreement. Referring to India’s space programmes and the moon mission Chandrayaan-2, the Prime Minister said Bhutan was also on its way to having its own satellite. “It is even a matter of great happiness that young Bhutanese scientists will travel to India to work on designing and launching Bhutan’s own small satellite. I hope that someday soon, many of you will be scientists, engineers and innovators. “We inaugurated the Thimphu Ground Station

of the South Asia Satellite and expanded our space cooperation. Through satellites, benefits of tele-medicine, distance education, resource mapping, weather forecast and even warning of natural disasters will reach even remote areas,” he said. Modi took a leaf out of his book “Exam Warriors” to encourage students about “overcoming fear”. “Can I tell you something? Much of what I wrote in Exam Warriors is influenced by the teachings of Lord Buddha, especially the importance of positivity, overcoming fear and living in oneness, be it with the present moment or with Mother Nature. “Yes, we have challenges. But for every challenge, we have young minds to find innovative solutions to overcome them. Let no limitation constrain you,” he said. In the 20th century, Modi said, many Indians came to Bhutan as teachers. “Most Bhutanese citizens of older generations would have had at least one Indian teacher during their education.” After his speech, Modi, who will return to India on Sunday evening, paid his respects at the National Memorial Chorten, a revered monument honouring the late Third Druk Gyalpo. Modi is in Thimphu on his second visit to Bhutan as Prime Minister and the first since his re-election in May this year.

AIIMS should be more careful with entry and exit points: DFS

It took more than 12 hours and 34 fire tenders to douse the fire

New Delhi, Aug 18 (IANS): Delhi Fire Service (DFS) chief Vipin Kental on Sunday said the damage due to the blaze at AIIMS could have avoided had the hospital administration been careful about exits and open spaces and if its security staff had been more alert. The Saturday evening blaze started on the second floor of the PC building and quickly spread to the fifth floor, destroying infrastructure and expensive medical equipment besides a large number of samples and records of patients. It took more than 12 hours and 34 fire tenders to douse the fire. Initial investigation suggests short circuit as the cause of the

Temple stone carving starts in Ayodhya Journalist shot dead in UP

Ayo d h ya , Au g 1 8 (IANS): With the hearing on the Ayodhya dispute gaining momentum, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has also started speeding up stone carving in Karsevakpuram. “This decision has been taken after the Supreme Court’s decision to hold day-to-day hearing of the Ayodhya title suit case,” Sharad Sharma, VHP spokesperson, said here. At present, the work of carving the stones is not going on at the workshop due to a shortage of artisans. Around 10-12 workers are engaged in the cleaning of the carved slabs that have gathered dust over the years. The stone slabs stored there and the pillars kept for the proposed temple are also being cleaned and spruced up at the workshop. More artisans would soon be hired from Rajasthan to carve the remaining stones. “We have already completed about 70 per cent of

and conclude with a rally in Rohtak on September 8. Bharatiya Janata Party’s state election-in-charge and Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and his Cabinet colleagues attended the flagging off of the Yatra. Referring to August 5 abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution that accorded a special status to Jammu and Kashmir, he said it was done for the development of the state. “Our neighbour is knocking on the doors of the international community saying India made a mistake. Talks with Pakistan will be held only if it stops supporting terror,” he categorically said. He said a few days ago Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan told his country that India was planning to take an action bigger than Balakot. “So Pakistan Prime Minister does acknowledge what India did in Balakot,” he said.

AIIMS stopped working due to the fire,” Kental told IANS. Kental said the rear end of the PC building, where the firemen could have easily placed their high-rise platforms and prevented the fire from spreading to upper storeys, had several high capacity generators blocking the way. “So we had no choice but to place the platforms outside the PC building, a little away from the fire spot. This took time and also hampered our smooth operation. “The administration must ensure proper arrangement of exits and open spaces inside the hospital in case of such an emergency,” he said.

The remarks came while addressing students at the Royal University of Bhutan on the final day of his two-day visit to hold talks with Bhutanese leaders to further deepen bilateral ties. Nagaland Post Vol. XXIX NO. 253 Dimapur, MONDAY, AUGUST 19, 2019

I

Back to square one

n a twist to the rudderless Congress, the mother has succeeded the son as the president of the party and confirming beyond doubt that the grand old party today is imploding. When Rahul resigned on May 25 following the second disastrous defeat that the party suffered under his leadership, he did right because he was responsible for the shocking failures. However, Rahul did not ensure continuity by hanging on till the next president of the party was appointed. He left the rudderless party leaderless at a time when the rank and file needed some direction. Rahul also made known his wish that no Gandhi should be president after his resignation. The Congress today is under ICU but unfortunately, the oxygen of the Gandhis is not enough to resurrect it. There had been a lot of talks about appointing an interim president from among the party loyalists. The name of Mukul Wasnik was thrown and appeared to be the only front runner. However, the CWC made up mostly of the old guards and Sonia/ Patel loyalists finally prevailed upon the reluctant Sonia to retake the reins as interim president. According to knowledgeable sources, the Congress has three power centres- Sonia (from 10 Japnath), Rahul (12 Tughlaq Lane) and the new entrant Priyanka. The sycophancy within Congress is legendary and like the Gandhi DNA, it is also part of the genetic makeup of the party. After the disastrous rout in 2014, it was expected that the heir apparent Rahul would undertake a massive shakeup to rejuvenate and reinvent the party. However, he was more active in engaging in talks than in being hands-on with the grass root workers. At a time when the BJP continues to be in ascendency because of the vacuum caused by the non-performance of the Congress, it is shocking that the party has been busy with its self created problems. The party has no credible leaders and the tragedy has been reflected even in the Lok Sabha where the CPP leader has been making blunders in his speeches. Beyond parliament, the party set up in several states is facing exodus of MLAs and party workers while the ‘high command’ has become defunct. The confusion and despondency in the party is likely to increase. It's not an ideal situation at a time when the Congress has to fight a BJP that is firmly entrenched in power and is armed with a formidable electoral machinery where Hindu nationalist sentiment is running high. At one time, it was thought that the young leaders within would take over reins and even at the cost of rebellion. However, the return of Sonia has only postponed it but the uneasy calm is evident. Sonia’s return also means that those old and redundant loyalists who were on the chopping block after Rahul took over, have now returned and for them, it’s good old days are back again. The fact that the 72-year-old ailing Sonia still remains the last hope of the Congress does not augur well for a party with an illustrious legacy. She is a stop-gap and needs capable leaders around to help restore the party to a functional state. If Sonia gets capable people to co-manage the party then it could help in the interim period till election for the next president. The problem is that besides the Gandhis, Congress cannot accept anyone else and that is the biggest problem.

DailyDevotion Have You Ever Been Speechless with Sorrow?

When he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich. —Luke 18:23 The rich young ruler went away from Jesus speechless with sorrow, having nothing to say in response to Jesus’ words. He had no doubt about what Jesus had said or what it meant, and it produced in him a sorrow with no words with which to respond. Have you ever been there? Has God’s Word ever come to you, pointing out an area of your life, requiring you to yield it to Him? Maybe He has pointed out certain personal qualities, desires, and interests, or possibly relationships of your heart and mind. If so, then you have often been speechless with sorrow. The Lord will not go after you, and He will not plead with you. But every time He meets you at the place where He has pointed, He will simply repeat His words, saying, “If you really mean what you say, these are the conditions.” “Sell all that you have…” (Luke 18:22). In other words, rid yourself before God of everything that might be considered a possession until you are a mere conscious human being standing before Him, and then give God that. That is where the battle is truly fought— in the realm of your will before God. Are you more devoted to your idea of what Jesus wants than to Jesus Himself? If so, you are likely to hear one of His harsh and unyielding statements that will produce sorrow in you. What Jesus says is difficult— it is only easy when it is heard by those who have His nature in them. Beware of allowing anything to soften the hard words of Jesus Christ. I can be so rich in my own poverty, or in the awareness of the fact that I am nobody, that I will never be a disciple of Jesus. Or I can be so rich in the awareness that I am somebody that I will never be a disciple. Am I willing to be destitute and poor even in my sense of awareness of my destitution and poverty? If not, that is why I become discouraged. Discouragement is disillusioned self-love, and selflove may be love for my devotion to Jesus— not love for Jesus Himself.

India loses billions for non-exercises

T

he Rs 100 trillion investment in infrastructure, promised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is inspiring. It should change the economy, which is in a turbulent phase. The last five years have seen many investment proposals in building modern ports, highways, railways, airports, hospitals and educational institutions. Many of it has happened in the road, airports and rail sector too. But the population control should not be an official agenda. It is often misused. Modi has the capacity to do a magic. It is happening. But he has also to contend with the global slowdown. Germany shrank by 0.1 percent as its exports are hit. Dow Jones indicator tumbles 800 points or 3 percent after bond market flashes a recession amid US trade war and Chinese yuan manipulation. Weak economic data around the world also unnerved investments. Indian stocks are doing no better. It is slumping everyday with some exceptions. Sensex touched 36958 on August 14 from a high of 40,000 on May 23. Will Modi’s promises

change the destiny? It may but if we listen to former RBI governor Bimal Jalan, it can take two years. That is closer to another election cycle. Jalan indicated that the private sector is still not investing, “may be due to post-demonetisation effect”. This means for the past three years whatever growth at now even 6.8 percent from 7.2 percent last year is due to push by the government. This is the slowest GDP growth since 201415. The previous low was 6.39 per cent in 2013-14 following which the Narendra Modi government came to power in 2014. It is straining resources and the pain is visible. Except for perhaps retail loans given by banks, there is a contraction in all other parameters which measure consumption in different ways. Last month the IMF and Asian Development Bank (ADB) cut the country’s growth forecast to 7 percent, citing global and domestic headwinds. This is at a time Modi says the people are becoming aspirational and becoming more demanding. A good indicator but if not

supported by action, it can have problems. Jalan says that mere public investment is keeping the morale high. It comes at a cost to the revenue collection. It rose by just 1.4 percent or Rs 4 lakh crore last cycle. The demand is high as despite realizing the need the government is unable to give the necessary tax cut benefits to the people. It has made ‘one nation one tax’ or the GST a burden for the entrepreneurs and start ups. There are many instances when start ups having a sale of Rs 560 or so ended up Shivaji paying over Rs 20,000 as penalties. The GST law imposes compounded penalties on those who do not file returns every month. The law fails to take into account that small ventures subsist on low margins and it equals to the tax demand. In other words, they are supposed to survive on no profit but face high tax demand and compliance. The motto of the law seems to be that everyone is a thief and must be punished. This is ruining small businesses, entrepreneurs

and start ups. Another consequence is high NPA for small MUDRA type loans. It is clogging public sector banks. The government to achieve its motto of promoting entrepreneurship should impose no GST or any other tax up to a limit of Rs 25 lakh or more. It also needs to do away with monthly returns for GST payers and annual returns for nil income taxpayers. It would be a great help to the informal sector which keeps the economy floating. There are many similar bureauSarkar cratic mistakes that has deviated the government policies. A person is not supposed to pay a paisa as income tax. But he has to take the rigours of filing return with the help of someone he has to pay. It burdens the department with millions of unnecessary returns and crores of refunds. In these non-exercises the nation loses billions in terms of money, manpower and business transactions. Cannot the nation do away with it? It is strange that the bureaucracy on simple is-

sues awaits instructions from the top. Multiple taxes on sought after foreign portfolio investors lead to the stock market crash. Why cannot it be visualized? Similarly the auto sector is reeling under 23.3 percent fall in sales, the biggest contraction since 2004. It impacts tyre, steel, ancillary industries, closes down dealerships and has thrown 2.3 lakh people out of jobs. Two major reasons are there. Owing to NGT’s quixotic order of scrapping 10 and 15 year-old cars, the secondary market, which encourages new car purchases, has collapsed. Worse is the newly enacted Motor Vehicle Act. The buyers are shaken as they feel that car purchase is a bad investment as even the best maintained car has to be sent to scrap yard for no fault of theirs. The NGT order has to be scrapped. Nowhere in the world has such rule existed. And MV Act needs a review. Heavy taxes, parking charges, tolls have to be cut to put the industry back on rails. It is killing secondary market, that creates demand in the US and Europe. It

Post-mortem Idol worship and its consequences ANAPAZA

A

s human, sometimes we miserably failed to uphold the God’s commandment of which the following scripture has to be taken up as reminder in lives with due seriousness as Exodus: 20: 3 & 4 says, do not have other Gods besides me or do not commit idolatry. What is Idol worship? Idol worship does not only meant people who worship trees, stones, rivers, sun, moon, cows, hand made statues etc. but he who goes or act against God’s will is an idol worshipers. Jesus said, ‘a person who is not for me is against me or whoever does not believe in me is from evil’ (John: 8: 43-47). We talk about satanic worshipers! And yes that’s true! I had personally experienced the episode, a woman declaring and confessing herself to be a Satanic worshiper further disclosed, she is a blood sucker as well. She candidly reveals, ‘I use to suck the blood of dog, pig, cat, cow, snake and so on. I also happen to deal with a person who is a close associate and worshipper of Lucifer. As per his disclosure, he along with other friends organized a meeting with Lucifer where deceiving innocent youngsters to chew tobacco, consuming of alcohol, disobeying their parents and teachers were the sole agenda of their meeting and together shared blood in the bottle. However, we don’t have to be get shock of that. Many Naga Christians have become Satan and idol worshipers: (both Old & New testament) advise us to love God the Almighty with all our heart, mind, soul and strength-which is the greatest commandment (Deuteronomy: 6:5, Mark: 12:30 & Luke: 10:27) But on contrary we have become a worshipper of drug, alcohol, tobacco, sex, technology, serial, pornography, money, TV etc. The following few explanation points can further remind us of how we become the victims of idolatries. 1. Drug & Alcohol worshiper: One who is addicted to drug & alcohol are automatically a worshipper of those substances because instead of worshipping God, they became to meditate it as their daily doses. All their thoughts and plans are how to steal, cheat parents and after all enjoy life, which brings poverty, failure, problems to the family, disturbing the peaceful atmosphere of the society and also facing an untimely death (Ephesians: 5: 18, Habakkuk: 2: 15-19, Rome: 13: 15) 2. Sex worshiper: Adultery fornication, homosexuals, polygamy, gay lesbians, male and female prostitutes, masturbating and all sexual immoralities are sex worshipers because instead of making their body a temple of God, they sins against their own body (1 Corinthians: 6: 18-20). They only focus on human desires and worldly pleasures which is totally against God’s will. (1 Corinthians: 6: 9-10, Revelation: 21: 8, Galatians: 5: 19-21, James: 4: 4). 3. Money worshiper: Demand, extortion, dishonest gain, murder, kidnapped, charging high interest (Proverbs: 28: 8) are money worshipers, because

their thoughts and actions are and only of the wealth so as to live a luxury live instead of working for the extension of God’s kingdom. For money, men sell their soul, women sell their precious body where both rich and poor are tempted. It is never wrong to be rich, it is only wrong to trust in riches so as to fill their treasure by unfair means. (Isaiah: 2: 7-9). The Bible says, money is the root of all evil (I Timothy: 6: 10). 4. Technology worshipper: I was told by a spiritual grandmother way back in 2006 where she say, “satans are planning to work in people’s live through atmosphere”. Ephesians 2:2 says, “In which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air (atmospheric domain), the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient”. And I do observed that within a short span of time from spiritual grandmother revelation, many youths were enraged in fornicating adultery, many young female got pregnant, lots of unholy marriages arises out of phone pal and with the coming of advanced technologies, lots of people are trapped in the bondage of evil plan. Addicted to smart phone is no doubt a technology worshipper. As was stated in Joshua 1:8, the Bible advice us to recite the holy word of God at all times, however, on our own will we replaced the Holy Bible with technologies and instead of reading and meditating on the word of God, we meditate and worship technologies irrespective of day and night. The Internet technologies viz; Face book, WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram, Messenger, Games, Tablets, Laptop etc are some of the worldwide Apps we focus all our times and energies worshipping it. People of this age even worship Satan through smart phones. As per the personal disclosure there is a boy who posses with 4000 gaming spirits, lots of youths and teenagers are engaged in phone prostitution, there are many who posses smart phones are engaged in evil designs which led them to depression, fear psychosis, frustration and furthermore. Numerous numbers of brilliant students fail in their studies because of smart phones and many are backsliding in their truthful path. As was observed, many people are viewed degrading health, abstain from attending church service, holy fellowship, holy camping, family devotion and was slaved to technology by threatening, demand, extortion through phone. Patriach Kiril’s Russian Church predicts that ‘Antichrist would control mankind through smart phone’. James 2: 10, says, whoever keeps the entire law, yet fail in one point is guilty of breaking it all. Dear Nagas, are we destroying the image of ‘Nagaland for Christ’ because of our idolatry or stepping to eternal hell (fire)? Let us be rooted in the Bible fill with Holy Spirit and joint hands to thrashed out of all those idolatries which is within us and make Nagaland a land of ‘Christ, Mission, Peace and Salvation’. “A

napaza” is the Sumi word for children playing as adults; I do not use the English word, “playing house” because the meaning and sense of “playing house” is narrow, whereas “anapaza” encompasses all pretend adult roles that children play. There was a time when the Nagas of Nagaland were adults; we meant what we said and did what we meant. Our leaders, in every field, believed in what they did. . Our Freedom Fighters believed in “Independence”; they knew that with independence we would have a constitution, a flag and every other right of our own. Our Politicians believed that Statehood was the best compromise in a time when every Naga from every village of every tribe in the erstwhile Naga Hills and Naga Hills Tuensang Area were feeling the effects of a full scale war. With the total destruction of numerous villages; murders, rapes and tortures on a regular basis; and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Nagas from their ancestral villages. And, most importantly, our Church Leaders believed in God And Christ. They was no competition to build the fanciest Church; no race to collect donations under every excuse under the sun, from every Tom, Dick and Harry; and the clergy did not believe it their God given right to own and drive luxury vehicles. 1974 was the year when corruption first reared its ugly head among the Political Class in Nagaland. The 80s saw the bureaucrats and technocrats join the Politicians in wholesale corruption; and was the decade when being corrupt became socially

acceptable in Nagaland; it was the Decade of the Instutionalization of Corruption in Nagaland. The 90s saw the Undergrounds and the Churches taking either active part in corruption or turning a blind eye toward it. Now, in the 21st. Century, we see Governments without governance; freedom fighters who’ve given up political freedom in exchange for financial freedom; Churches without God and Christians without Christ; and Civil Societies which work for individual ends. We have become an unethical, immoral and sacrilegious bunch of thieves who are helplessly entwined in the coils of corruption. Why? Because we revel in corruption, we boast about our feats of robbery and flaunt the fruits of our plunder. And worst of all, in our infinite hypocrisy we pretend to be and do all the things we are not. The Government uses its power only when innocent and helpless employees, students and citizens protest when deprived of their just and rightful dues. The Freedom Fighters use their guns and power only to extort taxes and to protect their monopolies; they discuss the Naga Solution with the Indians Authorities to legitimize their hold over Nagaland. The Churches are too busy collecting money to notice God; and the leaders of our Civil Societies are always on the lookout to rake up irrelevant issues in the hope of garnering publicity and feathering their nests. It is not India’s “Divide and Rule Policy” (which I do not subscribe to), not the nonlocals, not the I.B.I.s which are destroying Nagaland, but our refusal to see that our social acceptance of corruption is the cause of ALL the problems in Nagaland. Until we recognise this

lubes the industry. Yes, even for this prime minister may have to intervene. That agriculture is not in a happy shape is indicated by 14.1 percent fall in tractor sales. The Rs 6000 annual dole may have some impact next year. But the farm sector is still in a bad cash situation. It wants reversal to cash economy, which they say is more pious than the slow digital. The FMCG is also in crisis. Let the government intervene least and keep economy free of shackles. India has resilience. It would have survived the 2007 western sub-prime crisis but for the intervention of the UPA government that messed up the banking sector with over Rs 12 lakh crore of NPAs. It can bounce back provided the r ules are eased, biz are allowed to breathe, policy is stabilized and liberal atmosphere prevails. Prime Minister Modi has shown flexibility. A dialogue with the industry, chambers, small biz groups and farmers would embolden them to open up. Yes, last but not the least tax men need to be put at bay.

fact and start tackling it on a war footing, Article 371A will not save us, nor will the I.L.P, nor will the “Solution” of the I-M or the 7 N.N.P.G.s. The R.I.I.N. is just a smokescreen to fool the public that the government is trying something to benefit Nagas and to distract us from the fact that corruption still rules Nagaland. our government is an anapaza government, our churches are anapaza churches, our civil societies are anapaza societies. And the Indian Authorities know it too; they may greet you with all apparent respect, talk with you in all gravity, but they see you as spoilt little brats who don’t know what’s good for themselves. If they took us seriously, all the N.S.F. Office Bearers and Students who celebrated the !4th. August “Naga Independence” Day celebrations would be charged with sedition and be behind bars, but they recognised that it was just a bunch of kids playing anapaza Nationalism. But its time Nagas realised that the political dispensation in India has changed. The Congress and Janata Governments and even the B.J.P. of Atal Behari Vajpayee, of the past, were like indulgent parents, willing to stuff our mouths with money every time we wailed hunger, despite knowing that Nagas had become obese, overfed little brats. Not so the present B.J.P. Government. The Modi/ Shah duo will surely give us a “Solution”; whether we will like it or not, remains to be seen; but that it will be a dose of reality is certain. Grow up, for the time of anapaza is coming to an end. God save Nagaland Kahuto Chishi Sumi, Akukau, Hevishe Village, Khaghaboto Range (Kahuto107@gmail.com)

Reader’s Post Sir,

Orientation necessary

It really does not hurt to be polite to people and enquire about their requirements. In some places one comes across very arrogant and rude officials who are supposed to help people with their work. They even throw the document back at the unfortunate applicant with a very mean demeanour. If people are educated and are blessed to be placed in a good official position, they need to be more humble and patient as they are supposed to guide the common people. Officials should be given orientations on good public relations every now and then. Rhonbemo Kithan, AG Colony Kohima

According to them, some of these organisations meant well and expressed views in consonant with the yezhabo (constitution) of the hoho whose basic principle was to bring Naga people together, foster social harmony and protect their interest. But, they alleged, that the present executive council had no regard or respect for the yezhabo and what it stands for. Mentioning that the tenure of NH 2013-18 had expired on November 26, 2018 and that for any extension the decision of federal assembly was required, the three leaders asserted that the current incumbents had no mandate to continue as it violated the constitutional provisions, not to speak of convening meetings. And all its decisions must be treated null and void, they added. The three leaders said the only way forward would be for the federal organs to come together as a federal assembly and resolve the matter, in which a fullfledged hoho could be reorganised and its mandate reposed.

The nine-day Aadi Mahotsav, a joint initiative of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED), is being organised at the Polo Ground, Leh, and will continue till August 25. Around 160 tribal artisans from more than 20 states across the country are participating in it. TRIFED Managing Director Praveer Krishna said the changes in the Union Territory status of Ladakh has provided an opportunity to scale up business opportunities for tribals in Ladakh. “We will register tribal groups from Ladakh. At present, we have a small number of them empanelled with TRIFED,” he said. Ladakh is known for pashmina shawls and apricots. The idea is to provide tribal cultivators with a big market across the country. Through a collaboration of TRIFED and online marketplace Amazon, these products will be sold in 190 countries across the world, Krishna said.

New Delhi, Aug 18 (PTI): The country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) is pitching for tax relief for hybrid and CNG cars in addition to electric vehicles in order to promote green mobility in the country. MSI chairman R.C. Bhargava said there is a need to promote hybrid and CNG cars as it will take some time for mass acceptance of electric vehicles (EVs) considering the high cost of technology right now. “Personally we would like to see GST benefits linked to greener/cleaner cars. The Government gave tax cut on EVs but hybrid should be given duty cut. There should be tax cut on CNG vehicles as well,” he told a news channel. The hybrid cars are 25 to 30% more efficient and

will help reduce oil imports, he added. “For industrial development, reducing oil import costs is important. Hybrids and CNG will help. Government should look at both hybrids and CNG options before we transition to EVs,” Bhargava noted. The GST Council last month reduced the tax rate on EVs to 5% from the existing 12%, effective from 1 August. It also slashed the GST on EV chargers from 18% to 5%. However, there is no tax relief for hybrid and CNG cars. GST rate for petrol and diesel cars and hybrid vehicles is already at the highest bracket of 28% plus cess. Bhargava said so far

the government has not announced any target for EV four-wheelers in the country. He added that customers’ acceptance depends on availability of charging infrastructure, range and cost. Even the FAME scheme did not have any subsidy for private cars, he added. “The cost of the EVs with the current technology will be very high. New Delhi, Aug 18 (PTI): Banking and finance, government and critical infrastructure were among the most targeted sectors in India by cybercriminals in 2018-19, according to tech major Cisco. Also, about 26 per cent of these overall attacks cost organisations in the country upwards of $5 million each. “The hackers are persistent, and their campaigns are very targeted. We have found that sectors like banking and finance (20.1 per cent), government (19.6 per cent) and critical infrastructure (15.1 per cent) were among those that continue to face the highest threat of cyberattacks,” Cisco India and SAARC Director (Security Business) Vishak Raman told PTI. He added that cybercriminals are also increasingly targeting sectors like defence (15.1 per cent), IT, telecom and healthcare. “They are using a host of mechanisms like point

of sale attacks to target sectors like retail, hospitality, entertainment and e-commerce. Ransomware are used to attack public sector entities, transportation as well as banking and finance verticals,” he said. Raman cited an AsiaPacific Security Capabilities Benchmark Study conducted by Cisco that found 21 per cent respondents saying cost of breach for them was between $5-9.9 million, while another 5 per cent said it was more than $10 million for them. The cost of breach included loss of revenue, customers, and other costs related to the event. About 27 per cent said the cost of less than $100,000 -- an indication that while the amount involved may be small but the volume of such attacks is growing. “Companies are now spending on not just protection but also increasingly on proactive threat hunting, more forensics,” he said.

In his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Modi had also said wealth creators must be respected,” a tax official said. Modi had urged rolling out measures to ensure that honest taxpayers are not harrassed and the Finance Minister has also asked for the reduction of interface of taxpayers with the authorities. She has urged the use of technology and faceless assessment in tax administration. In a bid to curb unnecessary and unauthorised tax notices and summons, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said on Wednesday that it would introduce a computer-generated Document Identification Number (DIN), which will be be quoted in any notice issued by its officials.

ernment are also in talks with PSBs to have flexibility in lending to the auto and its ancillary sectors so that the slump could be checked and sales of vehicles boosted. Both the RBI and the Finance Ministry are likely to ask PSU banks to carve out suitable customised lendings to auto dealers without affecting their NPA situation. Then there is the proposal of the apex NBFC body, the Finance Industry Development Council (FIDC), which has sought from the government that they should be allowed to avail of refinance facility under the Mudra scheme and a permanent refinance window at the RBI be set up - similar to the one that National Housing Bank (NHB) has - so that it can offer them liquidity at need. There is a need to find an alternative source of funding for them outside the banking channels and a dedicated refinance window can be helpful, the FIDC had told the Finance Ministry recently. This will help even to lend funds to the automobile MSMEs which are facing the maximum slowdown, it had said.

The department will use friendly language in its communications with taxpayers rather than intimidating, according to a source, amid allegations of intrusive, threatening and arbitrary behaviour by the department. The voices of concern have grown louder in recent weeks after Cafe Coffee Day founder V.G. Siddhartha committed suicide and, in a purported note, alleged harassment by an income tax official. With the help of data mining and data analytics, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is now working on ways to ensure the department makes information “such as largecash deposits or high-value transactions” available to taxpayers well in time for filing of tax returns. New Delhi, Aug 18 (IANS): The Finance Ministry is holding back-to-back discussions with the Prime Minister’s office and the Reserve Bank of India to come out with a sectoral policy package at the earliest but sources rule out any fiscal stimulus having direct revenue implications. There will be relief to the sectors in stress through policy interventions like for the auto sector, the industry’s demand for a separate refinance window under the RBI is being discussed. On the FPI surcharge issue, options still being discussed and no conclusion has been arrived at, as FPIs continue to pull funds from equity market. The demand for GST rate cut for auto sector from 28 per cent to 18 per cent is also currently not under discussion as only 30 items remain in the highest slab of 28 per cent from the original list of as many as 235. According to an estimate, a rate reduction for two-wheelers to 18 per cent from the current 28 per cent will reduce the GST mop-up by about Rs 6,000 crore a year, added the sources. UK PM to tell EU to renegotiate Brexit deal

L o n d o n, Au g 1 8 (IANS): British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will tell European Union (EU) leaders that there needs to be a new Brexit deal when he makes his first trip abroad as the Prime Minister later this week. The UK will leave the European Union (EU) on October 31 with or without a deal, Johnson will insist. Meanwhile, the Sunday Times has printed leaked government documents warning of food, medicine and fuel shortages in a no-deal scenario, the BBC reported. A source told the BBC that a former minister leaked the dossier to try to influence discussions with EU leaders. The documents say the cross-government paper on preparations for a nodeal Brexit, code-named Operation Yellowhammer, reveals that the UK could face months of disruption

The Downing Street source told the BBC the leaked document “is from when ministers were blocking what needed to be done to get ready to leave and the funds were not available”. Michael Gove, who is responsible for overseeing the devolution consequences of Brexit, said in a tweet

that Operation Yellowhammer was “a worst case scenario”. “V significant steps have been taken in the last 3 weeks to accelerate Brexit planning,” he added. Energy Minister Kwasi Kwarteng told Sky News’ Sophy Ridge on Sunday: “I think there’s a lot of scaremongering around and a lot of people are playing into project fear,” he said. But a former head of the British civil service, Lord Bob Kerslake, who described the document as “credible”, said the dossier “lays bare the scale of the risks we are facing with no-deal Brexit in almost every area”. “These risks are completely insane for this country to be taking and we have to explore every avenue to avoid them,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Broadcasting House. Irish Deputy Prime Minister Simon Coveney said, in a tweet, that Ireland had

Washington, Aug 18 (IANS): At least six people were injured and 13 others arrested during far-right and counter protests in the US city of Portland, police said. Around 1,200 people gathered for the protests on Saturday, which forced authorities to close several bridges and roads in the city, Efe news quoted Portland Police Chief Danielle Outlaw as saying in a press conference.

Pak rejects request to resume Samjhauta, Thar trains to keep the train services suspended for an indefinite period of time. The sources added that the Indian officials had asked Pakistan to restore both suspended trains according to their schedule. The Samjhauta Express runs twice in a week - Monday and Thursday - while the Thar Express plies only once a week on Friday and reaches India the next day. Due to the suspension, passengers in both countries who travel via these trains are facing difficulties, The Express Tribune reported. At present, the only open route between the two rival countries is that of Wagah border, which can be crossed by foot. Both the train services had stopped after the 1965 India-Pakistan war before being resumed again in 2006.

Mudslide in PoK kills seven M u z a f f a r a b a d, Aug 18 (AP): Pakistani police say a mudslide after heavy rains killed seven members of a single family, including five children, in Pakistani-occupied Kashmir. Police official Raja Zulqarnain said on Sunday that the seven died when their house collapsed the previous day in the village of Ajeera. Two other village homes were damaged. The village lies near the Line of Control in the district of Rawla Kot. Zulqarnai says rescue teams with the help of villagers retrieved the bodies of those killed.

Dhaka slum fire displaces 50,000

Dhaka, Aug 18 (IANS): A massive fire has ravaged a slum in the Bangladesh capital of Dhaka, leaving 50,000 people homeless, the media reported. About 15,000 houses were destroyed in the Chalantika slum late Friday, the BBC reported. Many houses had plastic roofs, which helped the flames to spread. No deaths have been reported, although several people were injured, authorities said. Most residents are low-wage earners and many were away after the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire. Firefighters took more than six hours to put out the flames.

63 killed in Kabul wedding blast; IS claims responsibility KABUL, Aug 18 (Agencies): The Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility on Sunday for a suicide blast at a wedding reception in Afghanistan that killed 63 people, underling the dangers the country faces even if the Taliban agree a pact with the United States. The Saturday night attack came as the Taliban and the United States try to negotiate an agreement on the withdrawal of U.S. forces in exchange for a Taliban commitment on security and peace talks with Afghanistan’s U.S.-backed government. Islamic State (IS) fighters, who first appeared in Afghanistan in 2014 and have since made inroads in the east and north, are not involved in the talks. They are battling government and U.S.-led international forces and the Taliban. The group, in a statement on the messaging website Telegram, claimed responsibility for the attack at a west Kabul wedding hall, in a minority Shi’ite neighbourhood, saying its bomber had been able to infiltrate the reception and

detonate his explosives in the crowd of “infidels”. IS has claimed some of the most bloody attacks in Afghan cities over the past couple of years, with some aimed at the Shi’ite minority. The Taliban had earlier denied responsibility for the Kabul attack and condemned it. More than 180 people were wounded with many women and children among the casualties, interior ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said on Sunday, as families thronged to Kabul’s crowded cemeteries. “We want peace, not

such brutal suicide attacks,” said Ahmad Khan, who was burying a relative. Pictures on social media from the scene of the blast showed bodies strewn amid overturned table and chairs at the wedding hall, with dark blood stains on the carpet. Both the bride and groom survived. “I won’t ever be able to forget this however much I try,” the groom, identified as Mirwais, told the TOLOnews channel. He said his cousin and some friends had been killed. “I can’t go to the fu-

Pak PM attacks ‘fascist, Hindu supremacist govt’

Islamabad, Aug 18 (IANS): Defeated in his bid to get the UNSC or the world leaders to censure India over Kashmir, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday took to Twitter to urge the world to “seriously consider the safety and security of India’s nuclear arsenal in the control of the fascist, racist Hindu Supremacist Modi Government”. As Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Sunday that henceforth, talks with Islamabad would only be on Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), reiterating Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement that PoK and Aksai Chin are part of Kashmir, the Pakistan Prime Minister, in a series of tweets, alleged that Muslims in India were being disenfranchised and “RSS goons were on the rampage”. Pakistan has termed as an “act of annexation”, India’s abrogation of Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, and division of the state into two Union Territories -- Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. Pakistan has reached out to all the world leaders to get them to censure India but failed, barring support from all-weather ally China. It even got the UNSC to discuss it in a closed-door meeting on Friday, but there too, barring China, the other Permanent 5 countries backed India’s development agenda in Jammu and Kashmir. In a series of tweets,

nerals, I feel very weak ... I know that this won’t be the last suffering for Afghans, the suffering will continue.” The bride’s father told TOLOnews 14 members of his family were killed. Wedding halls have become a big business in Kabul as the Afghan economy slowly picks up and families spend more on celebrations. Big, brightly lit halls now line some suburban streets of the city, and bombers have targeted them before. At least 40 people were killed in a weddinghall blast in Kabul in November. There has been no let-up in fighting and bomb attacks in Afghanistan over recent months despite the talks between the United States and the Taliban since late last year. In the northern province of Balkh, 11 civilians were killed on Sunday when a roadside bomb blew up their van, police said. President Ashraf Ghani, in comments on the Kabul blast before the IS claim, said the Taliban could not “absolve them-

selves of blame for they provide a platform for terrorists”. The Taliban have been fighting to expel foreign forces and re-establish an Islamic state since they were ousted in October 2001, weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States. Both U.S. negotiators and the Taliban have reported progress after eight rounds of talks since late last year. But some Afghans were sceptical about the effort, amid the carnage. U.S. President Donald Trump has made no secret of his desire for a U.S. pullout from Afghanistan and an end to America’s longest war. But there are concerns among Afghan officials and U.S. national security aides that Afghanistan could plunge into a new civil war that could see a return of Taliban rule and international militants, including IS, finding a refuge. Some 14,000 U.S. troops remain in Afghanistan, training and advising Afghan security forces and conducting counterinsurgency operations.

“Officers made at least 13 arrests,” Outlaw said, adding that six protesters suffered minor injuries, not caused by officers. The police also reported the seizure of weapons including metal and wooden poles, knives, shields, chemical spray and a stun gun. Outlaw said those arrested face a range of charges, including disorderly conduct, interfering with police, resisting arrest, possessing a weapon and

unlawful use of a weapon. The demonstrators began assembling at 8.30 a.m. on Saturday morning in the central area of the city and at around 4.15 p.m., a “civil disturbance” situation was declared after reports of numerous conflicts between the protesters. Portland, considered one of the most progressive cities in the US and which was the scene in 2016 of some of the most massive protests against the election of President Donald Trump, witnessed similar demonstrations last August that were calm from the start to finish. This year, right-wing leaders called an “End Domestic Terrorism” protest against Antifa, a leftist antifascist group. The rally was attended by the far-right groups Proud Boys, which civil rights organization Southern Poverty Law Center defines as a hate movement, and Patriot Prayer.

100,000 hit streets as protests continue in HK Hong Kong, Aug 18 (IANS): Over 100,000 people dressed in black took part in the pro-democracy protests here on Sunday, amid severe warnings from Beijing. Rains couldn’t dissuade people from filling the Victoria Park then spilling out to occupy major roads in all directions, the BBC reported. The protests were sparked by an extradition bill, which has since been suspended by the Hong Kong government. Subway railway stations were forced to shut after getting clogged with protesters heading to the rally. Though the authorities didn’t grant permission to organisers Civil Rights Human Front for the march,

the sheer weight of numbers around the park meant that activists had to shift to streets. However, the police had allowed demonstration in Victoria Park. Wong, a protester, said, “We have been fighting for more than two months, but there has been no government response. We could just come out again and again.” Activists and the police have clashed over the past 10 weeks with the security forces frequently firing tear gas and rubber bullets, but this weekend’s rallies have been peaceful. China, which has built up security forces in nearby Shenzhen, has likened the protests to terrorist activity. After increasingly vio-

lent clashes in recent weeks, there’s been a concerted effort to win back public support for the democratic reforms by focusing on larger peaceful gatherings. Last weekend, activists occupied the airport, leading to cancellation of hundreds of flights. The turmoil has plunged one of Asia’s leading financial centres into crisis. Many businesses remained closed on Sunday, amid fears of violence. Mass protests erupted in June over the Hong Kong government’s now-shelved extradition bill, the South China Morning Post reported. The administration dropped the draft legislation on June 15 and city leader Carrie Lam later declared it dead.

Lotha Hoho did not substantiate any valid response nor did they reconstruct their new team of office bearer as demanded by Lotha Public Organisation. Therefore, the Lotha Public Organisation which was formed of aggrieved villages as a temporary interim organisation/ Pressure groups will now stand firm to function its organisation as “FULL – FLEDGED INDEPENDENT LOTHA ORGANISATION” with immediate effect. ISRO plans to source 5 PSLV SCHE stages ‘The rockets from domestic firms Greatest Showman’ T

S

alesian College of Hig her Educ a tion (SCHE) staged a musical play “The Greatest Showman” at its Paul Bernick auditorium on August 17 and 18 for invitees and youths of the Sunday Youth Centre Oratories in and around Dimapur. The musical play is

about an aspiring young man who runs after power, money and influence at the cost of losing friendship, family and love. He becomes famous and accumulates wealth. He loses all in one go. He finally realizes that family, friendship and love are ultimate anchors on which the ship of life has to

be anchored to sail smoothly. The play is interspersed with dances and music. It offers veritable cuisine for entertainment and life values. On both days the hall was packed to capacity and the audience seemed to be mesmerized with the songs and dialogues of the play. (SCHE Fr. Christudoss A)

argeting to realise 12 Polar Satellite Launch Vehicles (PSLV) per year from domestic private sector, Indian space agency ISRO's commercial arm NewSpace India Ltd has issued an Expression of Interest (EoI) for first manufacturing five of these rockets. According to NewSpace India, Indian industry consortium will be responsible for end-to-end realisation of the solid and liquid fuel powered stages/engines of the PSLV rockets, used by the ISRO to launch satellites into Low Earth Orbit and having the capability to carry multiple satellites and put them into different orbits. A pre-EoI conference is scheduled at the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) headquarters in Bengaluru on August 26 while the interested parties have to submit their EoI queries on or before August 21. As on date, PSLVs,

in addition to launching several national satellites, have launched 297 international customer satellites from 33 countries. The officials of ISRO had earlier told IANS that a PSLV costs about Rs 200 crore and hence the five PSLVs are expected to involve a business of about Rs 1,000 crore. The Indian industry partners will be permitted to utilize the capitalintensive facilities already realized within ISRO centres under Government Owned Company Operated (GOCO) model for this purpose wherever appropriate/feasible. Upon successful and satisfactory completion of realization of first lot of five PSLVs, NewSpace India/ISRO will enhance the scope for realisation of PSLVs to 12 per annum, under a separate contract. The private industry will use the existing approved supply chain of ISRO for the purpose. (IANS)

ncient sailors courted adventure and risked death on the Aegean Sea. And now divers have discovered five of their approximately 2,000year-old shipwrecks and a giant, granite anchor pole near the tiny Greek island of Levitha. These ships were laden with goods, largely amphorae, which are ancient jugs with slender handles and narrow necks that usually held valuable liquids, such as oil and wine. The amphorae came from the cities of Knidos, Kos, Rhodes, Phoenicia and Carthage,

according to the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports. Dating to just before the middle of the third century B.C., the goods were made during a time when the Ptolemaic and Hellenistic Antigonid dynasties ruled maritime trade in the Aegean, the ministry reported. Among the findings was a 880 lb.(400 kilograms) granite anchor pole, spotted nearly 150 feet (45 meters) underwater, that dates to the sixth century B.C. The anchor is so enormous, it likely came from a "co-

lossal" ship," the ministry said. (The statement was translated from Greek with Google translate.) In addition to the five shipwrecks, divers found other sunken vessels. One wreck had amphorae from the ancient Greek city of Knidos, located in what is now Turkey, that also dated to the third century B.C. Three other shipwrecks found nearby were carrying cargo that included cone (pointy-bottomed) amphorae. These wrecks dated to the second and first centuries B.C. and the second century A.D.

The last three newly discovered shipwrecks consisted of a first-century-B.C. vessel toting amphorae from the northern Aegean, a firstcentury-A.D. wreck with amphorae from Rhodes and a shipwreck with amphorae that dated to the early Christian period. Researchers found the shipwrecks during an underwater excavation lasting from June 15 to 29, under the direction of archaeologist George Koutsouflakis, director of the Department of Underwater Archaeological Sites, Monuments and Research with the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities, which is part of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports. The effort included 57 group dives and 92 hours of work on the seabed. The project's findings indicate that this sea route was heavily used from the Archaic to the Ottoman periods, the ministry said. Archaeologists plan to study the area around Levitha, as well as the nearby Aegean islands of Mavria, Glaros and Chinaros, until 2021. (Live Science)

The search giant introduced the Password Checkups extension to its Chrome web browser in February this year. It displays a warning whenever you sign in to a site using one of over four billion usernames and passwords known to be unsafe due to a third-party data breach. government, and email accounts. This risk was even more prevalent on shopping sites, where users may save credit card details, news, and entertainment sites. Outside the most popular web sites, users are 2.5 times more likely to reuse

vulnerable passwords, putting their account at risk of hijacking. Using strong, unique passwords for all your accounts can help to mitigate this risk, experts advise. 'Since our launch, over 650,000 people have participated in our early experiment,' Google's said in a written statement. 'In the first month alone, we scanned 21 million usernames and passwords and flagged over 316,000 as unsafe ,1.5 per cent of sign-ins scanned by the extension.' Google's research suggests that users choose to reset 26 per cent of the unsafe passwords flagged by the Password Checkup extension. Even better, 60 per cent of new passwords are secure against guessing attacks, they say. That means it would take an attacker over a hundred million guesses before identifying the new password. Grave Robbers Missed These Ancient Greek I still root for the underdog: Brad Pitt Graves, Filled with More than a Dozen Skeletons B

rave robbers are usually a determined bunch, but for the past 3,400 years, un savoury burglars have managed to miss two ancient burial chambers just outside of Corinth, Greece, according to archaeologists who are now analyzing tombs' Bronze Age skeletons and artefacts. The tombs themselves are filled with hundreds of bones; one has two primary burials and the bones of 14 additional people, whose remains were likely moved there from other burials in ancient times, according to the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports. The other tomb's roof was missing, it likely collapsed during the late Mycenaean period (1400 B.C. to 1200 K Y M C

B.C.), or late Bronze Age, but still had three primary burials within it. Both burial chambers also held ancient treasures, including figurines, clay pots, false amphora’s (jugs) and narrow leaved basins, as well as other small artefacts such as buttons, the Ministry reported. The cemetery itself is located at Aidonia, an archaeological site on Greece's Peloponnese Peninsula that's also famous for a nearby temple of Zeus, located at Nemea. Archaeologists have known about the Aidonia burial ground since the 1970s, when 20 tombs were uncovered. But those graves were heavily looted soon after their discovery. Analyses of the newly discovered, un looted tombs

may help shed light on the Mycenaean civilization, the ministry said. That said, these newfound tombs are starkly different from the previously excavated burials, which dated to the early Mycenaean period (1600 B.C. to 1400 B.C.). Although many of those earlier tombs were looted, the robbers missed one grave from the same period. And it's a good thing they did; the un looted burial contained ancient jewellery that the authorities linked to another batch of jewellery put on sale at a New York art gallery in 1993, the ministry reported. This illegally taken jewellery was eventually repatriated to Greece. (Live Science)

Real Madrid cruise past Celta Vigo 3-1 Indian eves hold Aus 2-2 in hockey Vigo, Aug 18 (IANS): Real Madrid cruised past Celta Vigo 3-1 in their La Liga opener thanks in large part to the play of Gareth Bale, who had seemed to be out of Zinedine Zidane’s plans but now has his head coach’s confidence once again. The visitors built a 3-0 lead at Balaidos Municipal Stadium in this northwestern city thanks to an early goal set up by Bale and finished off by Karim Benzema, a spectacular strike by Toni Kroos at the one-hour mark and a late score by Lucas Vazquez, who had come on as a substitute. But Real Madrid also relied on an outstanding defensive effort and the rock-solid play of Thibaut Courtois between the posts to secure the three points following star midfielder Luka Modric’s straight red card in the 55th minute. The visitors controlled possession just 43 per cent of the time but they managed to create more opportunities and were more effective in the opposing area. That superiority was

evident in just the 11th minute when Bale maneuvered around a defender on the left side and sent in a cross that Benzema, who was trailing the play, poked into the back of the net from close range. Both teams then had good chances to score over the remainder of the first half. At the half-hour mark an outstanding pass from

Celta’s Iago Aspas could have led to a goal, but Gabriel “Toro” Fernandez moved too slowly to the ball and allowed Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane to break up the play. Real Madrid then had a chance to add to their lead just before the intermission but were denied by goalkeeper Ruben Blanco, who got his hand

on a delicate attempt by Modric and then made a diving save of a cross-shot by Bale. On the final play before halftime, an apparent goal by Celta Vigo’s Brais Mendez was disallowed for offside after a VAR review showed that Aspas was too far forward. The second half then began with a flurry of action, with referee Javier

Estrada Fernandez sending off Modric for stomping on Denis Suarez from behind and Courtois and Blanco making remarkable saves to deny attempts by Celta’s Nestor Araujo and Benzema, respectively. There was nothing Blanco could do, however, to stop a rising missile off the foot of Kroos in minute 61, the ball ricocheting off the crossbar and over the goal line. Celta did little with their possession advantage over the remainder of the contest, falling further behind on a goal by Vazquez in the 79th minute. With the game well out of reach, 18-year-old youth-academy product Iker Losada finally got the home side on the board when he beat Courtois with a cross-shot in the 91st minute, three minutes after entering the game in place of Fernandez. The story of the match though was Bale, who got the start in part because newly acquired star forward Eden Hazard was unavailable due to a thigh injury and made the most of that chance.

Tokyo, Aug 18 (IANS): The Indian Women’s Hockey team held the World No. 2 Australian team to a 2-2 draw on Sunday in their second round-robin match of the Olympic Test Event at the Oi Hockey Stadium in Tokyo. The match saw India twice cancel Australia’s lead to earn themselves a hard fought draw with Kaitlin Nobbs (14’) and Grace Stewart (43’) scoring for the Australians, while Vandana Katariya (36’) and Gurjit Kaur (59’) scored for India. World No. 10 India started the match aggressively, matching Australia’s attacking hockey with their own which saw both teams earn penalty corners, with neither managing to score. It was only in the 14th minute that Australia were awarded a penalty stroke after an Indian defender blocked a shot at goal. Australia’s Kaitlin Nobbs made no mistake in converting from the spot to give her side a 1-0 advantage. The World No. 2 side dominated the second quarter completely, putting the Indian team under intense pressure through multiple

attacks and penalty corners. But India’s defense held firm and goalkeeper Savita made a couple of great saves to deny her opponents. The start of the third quarter again saw Australia dominate possession creating a couple of goal-scoring opportunities through penalty corners, with Savita, however, making fine saves again to deny the Australians. On the other hand, it was India who struck on the break as Vandana Katariya finished off a superb team move to equalize in the 36th minute. But the

lead did not last for much time as Australia found the second through Grace Stewart in the 43rd minute. It was a tough ask for the Indian team as Australia played well, and did not give them enough space inside the striking circle. However, with just a couple of minutes remaining, India won themselves a crucial penalty corner in the 59th minute. India’s prolific dragflicker Gurjit Kaur stepped up, and struck a sweet blow into the back of the net to earn her side a welldeserved draw.

Man City held 2-2 by Tottenham Hima, Anas win gold in Czech Republic

Players of Manchester City and Tottenham fight for the ball during their EPL match.

Manchester, Aug 18 (IANS): Manchester City stumbled at home against Tottenham here, squandering leads on a pair of occasions before the match ended in a 2-2 draw. The two-time defending Premier League champions were unable to secure three points at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday night despite playing at a higher level overall than Mauricio Pochettino’s men. The Citizens revved

up their attack over a 15minute stretch of the first half thanks to the play of Kevin De Bruyne, who set up both of the home team’s goals. The first came in the 20th minute when a curving pass from outside the area by the Belgian midfielder found Raheem Sterling, who got behind Tottenham’s defenders and headed the ball inside the far post from close range. Spurs, however, struck back just

three minutes later on an accurate shot from outside the area by Erik Lamela, who had been set up by a pass from Tanguy Ndombele. Manchester City took the lead back once again though on another play facilitated by De Bruyne, who sent in a ball from the right side that Sergio Aguero managed to poke into the left half of the goal past Lloris in the 35th minute. That advantage lasted around 20 minutes, but Tot-

tenham managed to equalize a second time in minute 56 on a header by Lucas Moura, who scored off a corner kick sent in by Lamela just seconds after entering the game as a substitute. Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola opted to make a change shortly after the half-hour mark and send on Gabriel Jesus in place of Aguero, who promptly got into a heated sideline argument with the former FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager. Jesus appeared to give City the win when he scored after a corner kick in second-half stoppage time, but the VAR system ruled that French defender Aymeric Laporte had touched the ball with his arm before it got to the Brazilian forward. Manchester City (four points) are currently third in the Premier League standings behind Liverpool and Arsenal, who have six points apiece after two games. To t t e n h a m ( f o u r points) provisionally stand in fifth place.

timing of 32.41 secs,” he tweeted. National record holder Anas has already qualified for 400m event for the World Championships to be held in Doha in September-October while Hima is yet to achieve it.

Das extended her sensational run by claiming her fifth gold as she returned to her pet 400m competition with a season-best time of 52.09s, in Nove Mesto on Saturday. The timing is slower than her personal best of 50.79 seconds, which she managed at the Jakarta Asian Games and she also narrowly missed out on the World Championships qualifying mark of 51.80. However, it was better than the timing of 52.88 seconds, which she managed earlier in the season. It was Hima’s fifth gold medal since July 2 when she ran her first competitive race in Europe.

Klaasen called up for Test series vs India

Cape Town, Aug 18 (Agencies): Rudi Second, one of the new caps in the Proteas Test squad to play three Tests in India in October, has suffered an injury while practicing with the South Africa ‘A’ side that will require immediate surgery and he has consequently been ruled out of the touring party. His place with be taken by Titans wicketkeeper/ batsman Heinrich Klaasen. “Klaasen is part of the one-day squad for the South Africa ‘A’ tour and he will now be added to the squad in Second’s place for the four-day series that will assist his preparation for the Proteas Test series,” commented CSA Acting Director of Cricket Corrie van Zyl.
