Nitish to formally join NDA

ULB issue: CNTC reaffirms to back MAY become NDA convenor; SHARAD REMOVED AS LEADER OF RS JCC’s demand PATNA, AUG 12 (AGENCIES): Bihar chief minister and Janta Dal (United) national president Nitish Kumar is expected to formally announce his decision to join the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the party’s national executive meeting in Patna on August 19. Nitish’s retur n to NDA fold has bolstered the prospects for NDA in 2019 general elections and he is tipped to play a bigger role in that process. Sources close to Nitish told News18 that he would be made convenor of the NDA, the stature once enjoyed by George Fernandes and Sharad Yadav. JD(U) leaders said this was only a formality after Nitish came out of Mahagathbandhan and formed a new government in the state along with the BJP-led NDA. Meanwhile, veteran JD (U) leader Sharad Yadav, who opposed the party’s decision to ally with the BJP in Bihar, was on Saturday removed as leader of JD(U) in the Rajya Sabha. The action against Yadav

I-Day: NE rebels call for total shutdown

Correspondent

IMPHAL, AUG 12: Militant outfits of the North East have given a joint call to boycott the Independence Day celebration in the region on August 15. In a statement issued by United National Liberation Front of WESEA (UNLFW), an umbrella group of several NE based rebel outfits, condemned the “continuous racist attacks” on people from the region in Indian mainland. The UNLFW consisting ULFA (I), NDFB (S), NSCN (K), KLO; CorCom (under which six Meitei outfits operate) and two Meghalaya-based groups Garo National Liberation Army and Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council. “All public and private transportation should come to a grinding halt, all shops and markets to draw their shutters down, educational institutions to remain close on August 15, 2016 from 1 am till 6 pm,” the statement read. However, essential and humanitarian services have been exempted from the shutdown call. “Our target is the Indian occupational forces, not a single civilian,” it announced.

came as BJP president Amit Shah announced that he had formally invited Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar to join the NDA. On Saturday, JD(U) members of the Upper House members backing Nitish met Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu to hand him a letter appointing R.C.P. Singh as their leader in place of Yadav in the House. After formally joining NDA, JD(U) would be offered two ministerial berths in the Centre – one of cabinet rank and the other as minister of state. “However it will take time and would delay cabinet reshuffle as the party will try to replace Sharad Yadav and Ali Anwar with new members in

the Rajya Sabha. If they do not resign on their own, they can then go to the disciplinary committee as both are engaged in anti party activities. If this does not work, there are other ways to ensure their ouster from the Rajya Sabha,” sources said. JD(U), after switching sides took tough stand and suspended lawmaker Ali Anwar Ansari from the party for attending a meeting of opposition parties Friday convened by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi. JD(U) has two MPs in the Lok Sabha and nine in Rajya Sabha, which is very crucial for the BJP considering it is in minority in the Upper House. Party’s national general secretary KC Tyagi said, “Nitish Kumar himself will moot the proposal which will be passed unanimously. This is a historic moment for Bihar when the same alliance is at the helm of affairs in the state and at the Centre. The combined efforts of Centre and state will help the state reach new heights of development.”

SC on interim bail by higher court NEW DELHI, AUG 12 (AGENCIES): Deprecating the practice of trial courts giving regular bail to accused on the basis of higher court’s order to grant interim anticipatory bail, the Supreme Court has restrained subordinate courts from passing such order, saying that it is an abuse of process of law. A bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi and Navin Sinha said that trial court’s order granting bail to accused would virtually make the higher court’s order infructuous if it finally decided to withdraw the interim protection given to accused by dismissing plea for anticipatory bail. The bench passed the direction after noting that it had become a regular practice for accused to surrender before trial court and seek regular bail immediately after interim pre-arrest bail was granted by higher forums.

CM inspects road repair works in Dmu Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, AUG 12 (NPN): Following the decisions taken at a coordination committee meeting on August 3, 2017 for immediate repair and restoration of roads and bridges severely damaged or washed away by the monsoon, the state chief minister, TR Zeliang, inspected the temporary road repair and restoration works here Saturday. The chief minister was accompanied by minister road and bridges, Dr Neikiesalie Nicky Kire, minister school education & parliamentary affairs, Tokheho Yepthomi, minister national highways & political affairs, G Kaito Aye, and parliamentary secretary irrigation & flood control, Tovihoto Aye. While inspecting the work sites, the chief minister said the current repair works being undertaken was only for emergency restoration, which would sustain for two to three months. After observing the slow pace of work around Purana Bazaar area, the chief minister said he has already directed the responsible departments to redouble machinery works by deploying three-four road rollers. Since it is not feasible to work during daytime due to heavy traffic, the chief minister said he has directed the officials to start works from 8pm and continue till wee hours on all days including Sundays. Meanwhile, the chief min-

ister disclosed that sanction has already been made for two laning of road from Tragopan JunctionPurana Bazaar and four laning from Purana Bazaar-Chumukedima. He added that tender has also been floated and contractor(s) selected. Zeliang expressed confidence that in another two-three months all those road works would begin after final approval by National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL). The chief minister has however expressed concern over the encroachment of road from Purana Bazaar-Chumukedima. Pointing out a minimum of 120 ft would be required for four-lane project, Zeliang said that it would not be possible if the encroachment was left unchecked. In this regard, the chief minister has directed the Dimapur district administration to look into the issue. Zeliang was optimistic

that traffic congestion in Dimapur would subside after completion of four lane. With regard to Dimapur-Kohima by-pass road, he said sanction has been made and road would be completed within two years. Earlier, the chief minister also had a brief interaction with youths trained under Year of construction workers (YoCW), who had voluntarily turned up to help in road repair works at Purana Bazaar. Trained youths apprised the chief minister on the need for imparting another skills training to them in varied fields. Zeliang said following the declaration of the year 2016-17 as the YoCW the government has funded the youths for undergoing training. The chief minister, however, assured that funds would be provided wherever required if the youth were willing to work. In this regard, the chief minister asked the youths to identify the area of training they required.

Dispute over parallel NPF Central offices D I M A P U R , AU G 1 2 (NPN): A tug of war over setting up of parallel NPF office in Kohima led to a stand-off between supporters of NPF president, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu and interim NPF president, Neiphiu Rio on Saturday. According to reports, over 40 youths of the 10 Northern Angami-I A/C NPF youth wing staged a protest outside the newly established office of the interim NPF president at Legacy complex, Bayavü Kohima demanding the closure of the “illegal NPF office” setup under Rio. However, Rio-led NPF party had clarified that the office setup at Legacy complex was just a temporary one. The party’s Kohima division youth wing alleged that around 100 people had come to the office with the sole agenda of violence and to create law and order situ-

ation in the otherwise peaceful state capital. Ultimatum: The 10 Northern Angami-I A/C NFP youth wing on Saturday served an ultimatum demanding that the illegal NPF office setup at Hotel Legacy in Bayavü, Kohima be shutdown on or before August 13, 2017. In a press note, the youth wing president Viliehou Suokhrie and vice president, Pfulikhrie Keretsu

pointed out that the so called office inaugurated on August 10, under the jurisdiction of 10 NA-I A/C, by “the so called interim president, Neiphiu Rio was unauthorized and illegal.” The youth wing, while serving the ultimatum also made known that the NPF, with its legitimate Central office located at Sokriezie below Hotel Japfü, has only one president-- Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu who was duly

elected during the General Convention held on November 26, 2014 and the same reaffirmed on April 30, 2015. The youth wing termed the action of Neiphiu Rio and his supporters, for opening the illegal office under their jurisdiction, as a direct challenge to their authority. It is highly provocative and would invite direct confrontation, the youth wing stated. Therefore, the youth wing demanded that the so called office had to close down and all NPF flags removed by August 13. Failing to comply with the ultimatum would invite “repercussion of extreme degree and for which Rio would be held solely responsible, the wing warned. Meanwhile, NPF Kohima division youth wing said it fully supports the 10 NA-I youth wing ultimatum demanding closure of the so-called illegal NPF office (Cont’d on p-5)

NPF sit-in protest against Governor enters second day NH-61 blockade: TAJCF, Correspondent

KO H I M A , A U G 1 2 (NPN): Naga Peoples’ Front (NPF), under the aegis of NPF youth wing, sit-in protest against the Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya entered second day Saturday at the entrance gate of the Raj Bhavan. The youth wing sit-in (dharna) since August 11, demanded restoration of rule of Indian constitution, dismissal of the “unconstitutional government” of T.R. Zeliang and recall of Governor from the state. Braving the rains, the youth were joined by the MLAs, CEC members, farmer and women wings. Addressing at the protestors C.L John, MLA reminded that the regional party had survived against all odds since 1993 and only NPF can maintain the integrity and unique identity of

the Nagas. Taking a jibe at Governor P.B. Acharya and for being away, John opined that he (Acharya) may have gone to Delhi to learn about the constitution since he lacked knowledge about it. John said Acharya ignored that the current issue was an internal affair of the

NPF and that he has power because of being an RSS. He said one day Acharya will fall from power and be forced to eat his own words. John paid tribute to all the founding members of NPF, many of who are no more, but added it was fortunate that veteran region-

alist like Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu was still alive. Besides other MLAs with T.R. Zeliang, John said many of them never contested as NPF candidates but joined the party for money and position and also defected since they did no care for the Nagas.

John also said such members always fall prey to temptations and so if Prime Minister Narendra Modi falls, such members who presently were mulling to join BJP would also fall along with Modi. He listed many who used to be in regional parties but left it to join ruling parties such as former chief ministers, Dr. S.C. Jamir, Neiphiu Rio and present chief minister, T.R. Zeliang. Reminding the struggle of the regional party in the past, John urged party loyalists to maintain the integrity and principle of the party. In his speech, P. Longon, MLA accused the Governor as being corrupt because he had violated the Indian constitution to install an unconstitutional government and so should be immediately replaced.

PPC back WU-NPPCL

D I M A P U R , AU G 1 2 (NPN): Even as the Workers Union Nagaland Pulp and Paper Company Limited (WU-NPPCL) imposed blockade on NH-61 at Tzudikong entered day two, in protest against delay in release of nine month salary, the Tuli Area Joint Council Forum (TAJCF) has extended support to the ongoing bandh. In a press release, TAJCF president, O Benjung Jamir, stated that while the WU-NPPCL was fighting for their genuine rights the responsible authorities (Hindustan Paper Corporation Ltd. and the government of Nagaland) seemed to be less concerned. The forum said that even after two days of protest no action was being initiated on the matter by the authorities. (Cont’d on p-5) TAJCF warned that

if the authorities continued with such lackadaisical attitude, the forum “may even avoid the ensuing Independence Day celebration.” PPC: Phom People’s Council (PPC) while extending strong support to the WU-NPPCL demands has appealed to the union to call off the indefinite blockade on humanitarian ground. In a press release, the council pointed out that with the blockade of NH-61 -- the only reliable route for the entire Longleng district -- the people were facing untold hardship and inconvenience. PPC said the blockade has especially affected the supply of essential commodities to the district. Further, the PPC also urged the responsible authority to resolve the grievances of the WU-NPPCL at the earliest. K Y M C

RSS running Assam govt, says ex-CM Tarun Gogoi Guwahati, Aug 12 ( Ag e n ci e s ) : A s s a m chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal is “spineless” and has allowed the RSS to run the BJP-led coalition government in the state, according to his predecessor and Congress leader Tarun Gogoi. Gogoi’s reaction came after a meeting between Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh functionaries and state Bharatiya Janata Party leaders with Sonowal, senior ministers and government officials on Thursday evening. “Sonowal is spineless. He does not have the power to run the government because it is has been made accountable to the RSS. Even the chief secretary has to update the RSS on the government’s performance,” Gogoi

told reporters on Friday. The former chief minister accused the RSS of ensuring an extension for chief secretary VK Pipersenia so that he can be the rightwing organisation’s “agent”. Gogoi also criticised the Sonowal government of promoting RSS icons such as Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, who he said do not ring a bell for most people in Assam. “(Prime Minister Narendra) Modi and (BJP president) Amit Shah had waxed eloquent on (16th century saint-reformer Srimanta) Sankardeva and (Ahom general) Lachit Barphukan before the polls. But after forming the government, the BJP is promoting Hindutva icons who have no place in Assam,” Gogoi said.

I M P H A L , AU G 1 2 (Agencies): Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh has welcomed talks between leaders of former militant groups with New Delhi’s interlocutor. He also said feelers had been sent out to insurgents still fighting the state. Debendra Sharma, a former director of the Intelligence Bureau, has started talks to settle issues, including the demand for a homeland and rehabilitation, with those who have come overground in the state, Biren Singh said. “We have also raised some issues. We have insisted on a time-frame for talks since the inordinate delay has caused resentment among the signatories to the Suspension of Operations,” the Chief Minister told mediapersons in an interview. He said the promised stipend of the past two years for the former insurgents had been cleared while extending the Suspension of Operations for one more year. Biren Singh said it was important to move the designated camps for former militants 20 km away from the national highways. “This will help reduce allegations of heists and extortions (put on them).” A total of 24 outfits, mostly belonging to the Kuki tribe, have come overground. There have been reports of violence within the camps housing them, causing even deaths. At certain places, civilians have protested against these camps.

Centre seeks report from UP on children’s deaths

New Delhi, Aug 12 (IANS): The Centre on Saturday sought a detailed report from the Uttar Pradesh government on the deaths of more than 60 children in the past five days at a Gorakhpur hospital, said Health Ministry sources. Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel and Health Secretary C.K. Mishra were asked to visit Gorakhpur and look into the various lapses at the BRD Medical College where these children were admitted, a Ministry official told IANS on condition of anonymity. Amid these developments, the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh suspended the Principal of the Baba Raghav Das Medical College Hospital, where

the deaths occurred, for negligence. Health Secretary Mishra has reached Gorakhpur while Patel was expected to reach there soon. The Union Health Ministry planned to send a delegation of doctors from Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Safdarjung Hospital and Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital to help the doctors at BRD, the official said. Sixty three children have lost their lives due to encephalitis and reported lack of oxygen supply in five days, of whom many were infants, and 30 of the deaths were reported in the last 48 hours. The BRD medical college has been receiving massive funds from the state to tackle encephalitis, espe-

NPF sit-in protest against Governor enters second day

(From p-1) Longon reiterated that NPF is for Nagas thereby it will not allow the outsiders to enter inside NPF’s kitchen and dismantle the party. Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu, MLA lauded the commitment of the party workers and urged to remain firm on their principle. He also appealed the party members not to be a purchasable commodity as that would tarnish the image of one’s life. Azo also regretted that the words loyalty and gratitude was missing from the dictionary of those defectors despite NPF having done a lot for them. He said the 12 MLAs were “pure NPF” whereas the other members were originally Congress, BJP, JDU and NCP. He said the harder the defectors tried to dismantle NPF, the stronger will the party become. Governor who reportedly reached Kohima around 4.30 p.m. on Saturday was greeted with slogans by the protestors. There was heavy deployment of armed police at the protest site. Meanwhile the NPF youth wing will hold a devotional service at the protest site on Sunday.

India home to 60% of Asian elephants, says census report New Delhi, Aug 12 (IANS): With 60 per cent of the Asian elephant population, India is home to a total of 27,312 free-ranging megaherbivores, an official said here on Saturday on the occasion of the release of a census report Dr Harsh Vardhan to mark the World Elephant Day. According to the report released by Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan here, elephants -- India’s heritage animal -- are present in over 22 states and a union territory (Andaman and Nicobar Islands). “Elephants should not be confined to only few regions of few states...they must spread... We will work to fix the forest corridors and mend their habitats,” Harsh Vardhan said. Of all the states, Karnataka has the maximum 6,049 free-ranging or wild elephant population. Following Karnataka closely is Assam at 5,719, Kerala 3,054, Tamil Nadu 2,761, Odisha 1,976, Uttarakhand 1,839 and Arunachal Pradesh with 1,614 wild elephants, among others. Andaman and Nicobar, where a few animals were rehabilitated, now has 19 free ranging elephants spread over 133 sq km. At six, Maharashtra has the smallest number of wild elephants population, which moved there due to their migratory nature. The report asserted that traces were also found in Manipur and Mizoram that might have nine and seven wild elephants, respectively. There are 29 elephant reserves in India spread over 65,000 sq km. “Sixty per cent of Asian elephants are in our country,” said Siddhanta Das, Director General - Forest and Special Secretary, Union Environment Ministry. The government, however, said that the 2017 census results were based only on the direct count method, as the previous census had placed the number at around 30,000.”

Dispute over parallel NPF Central office (From p-1) under Neiphiu Rio at his own hotel-- Hotel Legacy at Bayavu Colony. The youth wing president, Mhashemeyie Neikha and working president Khriezenyü Chielie while condemning the setting up of the illegal office under its jurisdiction, said it would fight tooth and nail if any such illegal office is set up. The wing also war ned unauthorized persons from hoisting the party flag without the permission from the party authority. The wing said it was fully with the NPF president, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, who is the only legal and mandated president of the NPF party. Meanwhile, the youth wing has rejected the appointment of “interim president”, saying there is no such unconstitutional post/ position in the party. NPF P&IC rebuffs: Reacting to the ultimatum, NPF press & information cell (PI&C) has advised the NPF youth wing of 10 Northern Angami-I A/C not to threaten the ruling party to close its temporary office without knowing the actual matter at hand. P&IC pointed out that Lok Sabha MP, Neiphiu Rio was duly elected as interim president of NPF on July 31, 2017 by 36 NPF legislators out of the 48. Accordingly, with the support of majority of NPF legislator led by chief minister, T.R. Zeliang, Rio accepted the role as the interim president of the party, it added. P&IC said every different party had the right to establish

its own party office anywhere in the state capital, including the NPF temporary office located at Legacy complex, Bayavü Hill Kohima The temporary office was setup only after due permission by the land owner of the Legacy complex. No one has the right to disrupt the functioning of the office which is in a private property, it stated. Further, P&IC said that the 36 NPF legislator does not recognize Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu as the president of NPF due to his autocratic way of functioning, thereby inviting destruction and dismemberment of the party at various hierarchies. This was why the 36 NPF MLAs had, on July 29, 2017 served a 15 days ultimatum to Dr. Liezietsu to step down as NPF president. P & I C s a i d s i n c e D r. Shürhozelie has lost the support of majority of NPF legislator, he ceases to be the president of NPF. In this regard, P&IC said the NPF temporary office at Bayavü hill, Kohima was the only legitimate party office, with the support of the majority NPF legislators and party workers. There is no illegality in functioning at the premises as temporary office of the party, it said. While condemning the action of the 10 NA-I A/C youth wing numbering around 50, who had come and threatened to close down the office on August 12, P&IC said that the ultimatum served was with ulterior motive to disrupt the functioning of the party office. In the event of any disrup-

tion /destruction of the temporary office, P&IC said that the youth wing of 10 NA-I would be held responsible. It further warned of initiating necessary action and relief before the appropriate authority. Youth wing: NPF Kohima division/10 NA-I A/C youth wing expressed utter shock over the ultimatum submitted by the “minority NPF youth wing of 10 Northern Angami-I A/C at Legacy Complex Bayavü hill Kohima. In a press note, the division said a mob numbering around 100 paid youths, foot soldiers of the disputed president were abusive and their sole agenda was violence and to create law and order situation. However, those present at Legacy complex exercised restraint in order to avoid physical and senseless confrontation. The division made it clear that the NPF headquarters located at Legacy Complex was just a temporary office for communications with the ECI and to run the daily affairs of the party till such time they officially occupy the NPF headquarters at P.R Hill Kohima. Stating that their NPF-led DAN government was in absolute 2/3 majority, running the helm of the affairs, the division said it would not be intimidated by such threats, saying “we shall stand the ground come what may!” The division cautioned that in the event of any consequences, be at the legacy complex or upon its tallest leader-- interim NPF president and Lok Sabha MP, Neiphiu Rio, the minority NPF youth wing would be solely held responsible.

Jharkhand assembly passes anti-conversion, land bills

R an c h i , Au g 1 2 (IANS): Amid protests by the opposition, the Jharkhand Assembly on Saturday passed the Religious Independence Bill, 2017, banning conversions, and an amendment to the Land Acquisition Act 2013, removing the need for social impact assessment for certain category of projects. The opposition walked out when voting was taking place on both the bills. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) legislator Stephen Marandi raised questions over both the

bills. “The Religious Independence Bill 2017 should be sent to the Standing Committee. Some provisions of the bill violate the fundamental rights under the Constitution,” he said. Leader of Opposition and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha Executive President Hemant Soren said: “The way the bill has been advertised is wrong. I have

studied in a missionaryrun school... why I did not change my religion?” Legislators of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party however termed it the need of the time. BJP legislator Radha Krishna Kishore said: “There is need of widespread discussion on the issue. The bill has been tabled after a delay of 15 years.

A person’s religion cannot be changed by offering bread. Jharkhand has witnessed largescale conversion.” According to the anticonversion bill, which forbids conversion through allurement or coercion, anyone forcing religious conversion will be liable to imprisonment of three to four years and a fine of Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh. The amendment to

the Land Acquisition Act 2013 removed the need for social impact assessment for important social and economic projects meant for the welfare of the people. Attendants and family members of the patients admitted at the medical college, however, claim that despite the funds, there were neither doctors, nor proper treatment, adequate medicines or oxygen supply. Earlier on Saturday, Adityanath dispatched state Health Minister Siddhartha Nath Singh and Medical Education Minister Ashutosh Tandon to the tragedy-struck town with instructions to “spare none for the tragedy”. Facing flak from the opposition for inaction, Adityanath’s office on Saturday afternoon tweeted, quoting Health Minister Singh, that the medical college principal has been suspended with immediate effect. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is constantly monitoring the situation in wake of the death of more than 60 children in the past five days at a hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur, the PMO said. “PM is constantly monitoring the situation in Gorakhpur. He is in constant touch with authorities from the Central and U.P. governments,” said a tweet from the Prime Minister’s Office handle.

Defunct again

espite the best of intentions of the state government and the best of efforts by the central government , the revival of the Tuli paper mill (NPPC) appears to have run aground due to various financial problems. The workers union of the mill are on an agitation against mill authorities over various demands for which the ultimatum period expired. They have now decided to block the highway passing through the mill which they launched on Friday for an indefinite period. The workers are demanding rehabilitation package since the mill hasn’t taken off after the revival package of around Rs.600 crore. It is a joint venture where the Government of India holds 95% share and Govt. of Nagaland holds 5% share. Commercial production in NPPC started from July, 1982. However, due to lack of power supply, and continued operating losses the Mill has suspended its operational activities from October, 1992. The Company incurred a net loss of Rs. 1190.05 lakhs as on 31.03.2012. The accumulated losses incurred by the Company till 31.3.2012 amounts to Rs. 8393.36 lakhs. The revival package for the mill had some pre-conditions set by the ministry of heavy industries through the Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction (BIFR). Despite these pre-conditions, the HPC reportedly did not comply with most of them and instead,it was alleged that funds were diverted and misused. The Tuli Area Joint Council Forum, an NGO further alleged that out of the Rs 100 crore released by the government of India in September 2013, the Finance & Accounts Department, NPCC had in its record only the expenditure of Rs 40 crore. It had therefore sought answer as to where the remaining Rs 60 crore might have disappeared. Works under the first phase of reconstruction was supposed to have been completed by November 2016, for which the government has allocated Rs 489 crore and another Rs 190 crore would be allocated to take up works in phase two. The Nagaland government has to contribute Rs 23 crore as five per cent state share. The problem with Tuli paper mill is that it has missed the boat after being subjected to the internal politics and manipulations. The state government was all for the mill since the very beginning but unfortunately it could not keep a strict tab on the goings on. After the revival package also failed to revive the ailing mill, the workers have probably realised they would be going nowhere. Their demands are justified but there appears to be very little response from the Hindustan Paper Corporation. The workers union are demanding immediate rehabilitation package and also release of nine months salary. They are also demanding . immediate release of Gratuity & Terminal benefits of death and superannuated employees and also immediate implementation of 2007 pay-scale in NPPCL, since officers who have been deputed to NPPCL from other units of HPC are enjoying 2007 pay-scale. To be fair, the mill deserves better than the treatment from a corporation which should own responsibility for the mill becoming eventually sick. The potential is still there and problems are also not insurmountable. However no one seems to be willing to shoulder the responsibility of making the mill work again and that is why it is becoming sick again.

The Theology of Resting in God Why are you fearful, O you of little faith? —Matthew 8:26

When we are afraid, the least we can do is pray to God. But our Lord has a right to expect that those who name His name have an underlying confidence in Him. God expects His children to be so confident in Him that in any crisis they are the ones who are reliable. Yet our trust is only in God up to a certain point, then we turn back to the elementary panic-stricken prayers of those people who do not even know God. We come to our wits’ end, showing that we don’t have even the slightest amount of confidence in Him or in His sovereign control of the world. To us He seems to be asleep, and we can see nothing but giant, breaking waves on the sea ahead of us. “…O you of little faith!” What a stinging pain must have shot through the disciples as they surely thought to themselves, “We missed the mark again!” And what a sharp pain will go through us when we suddenly realize that we could have produced complete and utter joy in the heart of Jesus by remaining absolutely confident in Him, in spite of what we were facing. There are times when there is no storm or crisis in our lives, and we do all that is humanly possible. But it is when a crisis arises that we instantly reveal upon whom we rely. If we have been learning to worship God and to place our trust in Him, the crisis will reveal that we can go to the point of breaking, yet without breaking our confidence in Him. We have been talking quite a lot about sanctification, but what will be the result in our lives? It will be expressed in our lives as a peaceful resting in God, which means a total oneness with Him. And this oneness will make us not only blameless in His sight, but also a profound joy to Him.

Post-mortem

Brief biography of Casteless culture and equality late Imnaonen Jamir helped spread the gospel to Nagas I

(This is a part of Chapter IV of a Book: “why did the Naga became Christian?”, this writer is contemplating publishing, hopefully relevant these days when the RSS/BGP policy on Freedom of Religion in the country is very wearisome)

T

he Mission School became great centres of Christian acculturation as apposed to Christian Imposition. To the pagan Villagers, the students appeared different in their demeanour, in their bearing, in their life style, in their talk and in their behaviour. The boys and girls raised from the Class Room from the Christian Hostel with extra curricular activities and Social Service in the Christian Mission Compound produced a calibre of life in the youths different from those raised in the traditional Life of Age-Group Team for field works and other necessary practical social Services of the Morung. Formal Education in the Mission School was more attractive to the Youth and preferred the easier life than the life of work in the Field under Sun and Rain. The School brought the Youths in friendship and contact from a much wider Circle of Villages and Tribes than the smaller same Age group of the Village. When the boys and girls returned to their Villages during school vacations, the People saw them different from the other boys and girls of the Village. The differences in the boys and girls raised from the two Systems were interesting: fresh and new in those raised from the Mission Schools. They were not objectionable to the Village Traditionalist and were even attractions more to the boys and girls of the native life. The beautiful songs the school boys and girls brought to village, electrified particularly the boys and girls of the Village. Christianity came to the Naga through his/her Freedom of Decision, Equality and enthusiasm of youth for a new life. One of the important beauties of Christianity is its beautiful Music. Pagan Naga songs are mostly repetitions,

monotonous if the meaning is not intelligible and there were language barriers between the many tribes. The beautiful Christian Songs transcended the language barrier of the Tribes. The Christian music is common to all the people and was a great factor in uniting the Minds of the Tribes. The Naga express his zest for life in dances and songs. The traditional and cultural Song of the Village is often accounts of successful exploits in war, of success over enemies and adversaries and of course on Lovers. Many of the pagan songs are war inspired and people pay attention to the Words more than the tune. There are Songs on other themes like Love, on Enthusiasm, Sadness, Loss, Pleasure and Friendship and on various other subjects of life. The songs of war exploits of one Village or one Tribe can not be expressed in the presence of Members of the other Village or Tribe; beautiful Christian Songs became a uniting piece among all Nagas. Expectedly the pagan Songs performed are more appropriate and inspiring in fullest and finest war regalia of native dress with decorative Cloth, spear, Daoh (machete) and in symbolic movements. Understandably most triumphant pagan songs are sung without any musical instruments except the Drum among the Aos and a few others. The Zeliang Tribes however have perhaps the most beautiful social dances and songs. The songs are accompanied with interesting varieties of Steps, dances and intricate movements between groups of female and male dancers, between the females, between the males. The music is less repetitive starting from a slow motion of dance and tune increasing in crescendo and finally ending in a sud-

den end with great shout and drumming. The Christian song on the other hand is not only sweet to the ear but also expresses the many emotions of the Faith. They are not repetitive though Choruses are common; the songs have great variations of sounds, pitch and timings. The whole congregations or a smaller Group can sing together; it is sung in Octet or Quartet or Duo or in Solo in the Church Service or in special occasions. Individual Christians, boys and girl in casual happiness or to pass time sing without any special preparation or occasion; that greatly attracted the attention of the Pagan hearers. They are quite different from the Pagan songs villagers hear only on rare community occasions or festivities. It is these Christian songs and music that caught the attention of the boys and girls, young and old, the aged and the infirm in the Village that stirred the attractiveness of Christianity to the pagan Mind. The Pagans first thought it is a waste of labour force to sent their children to the School to study some small strange figures in the Paper. In every Village, nearly one third families do not produce enough Food grains from their cultivation to last the whole year. They would do works for the rich families and earn their livelihood. Economically weak villager would rather send their children to work in the Field than to the Missionary School to while away the whole day looking at some strange figures in a paper without any work. They would say “My son, you would not eat Paper, you would eat Rice”, a Villager would say admonishing his son for going to the School. Most said: “It is not necessary for the girls to go to

the School, once they become marriageable age, they would marry away; they should rather learn at home how to winnow rice separate from the husk and how to cook food”. The Mission sometimes provided free education, sometimes stipend to a few needy and there are instances of a villager in gratitude come to attend the Class in place of his Son or Daughter who was needed to some very urgent work of the family. Christianity’s rapid expansion in the Naga is mainly due to the great freedom Naga Society has on Freedom of Choice; even young boys and girls are free to adopt any Religion they like. The Parents want their children to follow the traditional Belief System but Villagers never forced their children’s decisions and this holds good in the field of Belief also. The majority of the children in the Mission School on their own volition adopted the ways of Christianity and the Villager Parents honoured the decision. Naga boy or girl has complete freedom to marry of follow any religion she/he choose, a freedom not available to their counterparts from the Hindu society. It is because of this Freedom of Conscience in the savage Naga Society that the Naga could become Christian without any inhibition. The Mission Schools did not directly, not in a single instant, made the student Christian. It is difficult for a boy or a girl from a Hindu Culture to adopt another religion without the knowledge and permission of the parents. No boy or girl in the School or even in the College would dare to change his religion for another without the permission of the Parents. Thepfulhouvi Solo. Retd IFS (RR-68).

(Former general secretary, NNC). mnaonen Jamir, who worked as general secretary of NNC from 1951-1956 died on Macrh 4, 2017. During his funeral, which was held on April 5, two senior citizens, one hailing from Ao community and the other from Angami tribe, in their messages mentioned clearly about the active part late Imnaonen Jamir played in bringing the Konyak and Phom tribes to the common front of the Nagas fighting for independence. It is recorded that the Naga National Council (NNC) on behalf of the Naga people of Nagaland made many fervent appeals to India to return the independence of Nagaland. But all the appeals spoken or written fell on deaf ears and so stronger appeals had to be made. Therefore, in January 1951, the NNC initiated to the Government of India that a voluntary plebiscite on the issue of Naga independence would be taken by the Nagas. Thus, plebiscite was held all over Nagaland with effect from May 16 1951. All Naga adults, both male and female above the age of 15 were included in this plebiscite. They were asked to give their thumb impression on either for or against joining the Indian union. While taking this greatest undertaking of the Naga political movement, Naga people from Tuensang and Mon were under a separate administration (NEFA) directly controlled from the center. As such, a senior NNC official namely the general secretary late Imnaonen Jamir was sent as NNC envoy to the Konyaks. It is said that 9 main Konyak Anghs with armed escorts met Imnaonen and his friend Thanwang Konyak of Tamlu, the first educated Konyak, at Pongkong jungles and discussed about joining Naga National Council which took four days and nights. Finally the Angh of Mon as representative of the Konyaks came forward with two Konyak ceremonial daos one of which he handed over to the general secretary, the other he held over a rock with the sharp hedge facing upwards and then he instructed the general secretary to strike his upturn dao with all his might. The dao held by the Angh chipped off and holding it up the Angh solemnly declared that until the day the broken chipped off portion of the metal dao grows back to its original shape, the Konyak people will be land animals if the NNC is land animal, and if the NNC is water animal, then they will be water animal. This agreement was the final decision of the Konyak and Phom tribes joining the NNC. It is also recorded that under the initiative of Imnaonen Jamir to Konyak and the Phom tribal council were formed. As such we the Akhoya Sisaluyimer Telongjem will like to place on record for prosperity the remarkable and immense contribution made by late Imanonen of Akhoya, towards the unification of all the Naga tribes to fight for sovereignty and independence of Naga under one umbrella. Sashimongba general secretary Akhoya Shisaluyimer Telongjem, Temjenwapang president Akhoya Shisaluyimer Telongjem.

Conspiracy behind the toppling game (From previous issue) Though the world knows, that Dr. Shurhozelie retired from active Political fray and dedicating his time nurturing the most coveted NPF party to see that the Naga Political aspiration is achieved, he was forced by the elected MLAs to salvage the party and the government, when the TR Zeliang’s government was vehemently attacked by Rio Sponsored movement in connection with ULB elections under the pretext of infringement of Article 371(A) of the Naga Customary Practices. Dr. Shurhozelie reluctantly accepted it and in good faith, inducted Mr. Kaito Aye and Imkong L Imchen to his Cabinet to give peace a chance in the state knowing fully well of their notoriety. To this Mr. Rio, commented that “I have send two Trojan Horses to Dr. Shurhozelie camp, very soon, drama will start” in one of their gathering. T.R Zeliang won the floor test on 5th Feb 2015 where Mr. Kaito and his group chickened out and voted in favor of TR Zeliang government but claimed to have voted in favor of DAN government but not for TR in a face-saving statement and continued to remain in their concentration camp to take over the party through faulty means. During this, TR Zeliang enjoyed the entire government departments in 2015 financial year all alone and has accumulated unaccounted wealth. Having enjoyed the enormous powers vested to CM, both TRZ and N. Rio wants to hook up in power to drain the wealth of state exchequer all for selfish purpose. Dr. Shurhozelie, announced in public domain that he will remain as CM for short period and after seeing the mess being created by these two leaders, he started to set the governance in order, checked the liabilities created by the two former CMs that crippled the state economy and

stated not to defend the corrupt official in the system in which he started receiving complaints from Legislators. The infamous MKR Pillai case surfaced and as CM he was ready to handover the case to CBI which resulted in most of the former Home ministers started to gang up to topple Dr. Shurhozeli govt calling him as un-mandated CM. The treacherous game started after Mr. Khriehu Leizietsu resigned to pave ways for CM to go for by election, to which Mr. TRZ started making silly excuses that old man did not keep his words. In fact, Its TRZ and Y. Patton who forced that Dr should contest byelection to lead the state for the rest of tenure. Having said that, Mr. Y. Patton, Naiba Konyak and others even proclaimed that they are ready to offer their seats for Dr. Shurhozelie to come back elected to complete the tenure. It is pertinent to mention that the Congress party both at the centre and in the state is ousted. The remaining 8 MLAs in the state had been found themselve in a hopeless situation and they found 2015 crisis as their lucky draw to join the government and later merged with NPF though their cases are still pending in the court. The Congress leaders defied the call of Naga people “Solution Not Election” in 1998. These Congress legislators who keep changing their political stand in search of opportunity have never stood for Naga political Solution neither in the past nor at present. Today after giving shelter in the NPF party, they are trying to destroy the party. Naga people memory is still fresh when they published the “Bedrock of Naga Society” in 2002. Mr. Rio was Home Minister, TR Zeliang, Tokheho Yepthomi, Imtisungit Jamir, Kaito Aye and others taken the Naga political issue for ride as ministers in that un-mandated government. Today too, we see them flocking together once again to destroy the NPF

party that gave them space to repent before the Naga people. Most of young entrants Legislators were misled by these few veteran power mongers who regularly shifts and changes their political uniform hiding treacherous action of their past and are planning to destroy one of the oldest regional party in the country even at this Naga political crucial juncture when the Negotiation is in the final stage between GoI and the Nagas. These Congress brought up leaders, conniving together with North East former Congress Leaders in various other political parties in power in the region and misleading the National leaders to further their whimsical agendas at the threshold of Solution. In the Naga political history, treachery and betrayal from prominent leaders had proven costly in the past and at this juncture, we see the resurrection of these elements in the form of NPF dissident legislators who proclaimed themselves as majority, floating all procedures and laid-down rules, wanting forceful dominance to prevail over it cannot be allowed at any cost. Mr. Imkong and Mr. Kaito as true Trojan Horses of Mr. N. Rio camp played a tactical game in hoodwinking Legislators, to avenge their failed game of 2015. With ulterior motives, they started mobilizing the legislators of their respective district Legislators. They began to whisper around, inciting, that the present leadership in the party and government is all headed by only Tenyimia, as Both the MPs, CM and Party higher ups are all from Tenyimia family. The party is aware how such a cheap propaganda could become misfortune, as they themselves are involved in so many public unrest activities in the past where the people stands witness. The duo’s collective mission is not to project Mr. T.R Zeliang as their undisputed leader, nor they are for N. Rio but both has ambition

of their own, just waiting for the dust to settle to snatch for themselves. Mr. Imkong L Imchen declared on the NPF CEC meeting in May 2017 that “ When I was in Sovima Camp, I was so afraid of Chotisu Sazo, then Speaker, But now I am not afraid of him, because, Dr. Imtiwapang is Speaker, he is my brother; Nepotism Apply sometimes”. Mr. Imkong’s remarked was proven when the Speaker flouted all norms and procedure and accepted his brother-in-law TR Zeliang Chief Whip against the laid rules in the constitution of India on the stage managed Assembly. Now, with everything done through backdoor, these power mongers are trying to regularize the misdeed by taking over the party but it will only repeat 2015 episode. Mr. Tokheho Yepthomi, never in his life has contested in any regional party ticket, but he is famous for shifting his loyalty to any government in power, just to cling on for his selfish gain. He was main architect to let ULB election held and

threatened the CM and cabinet that he will resign if ULB elections are not held after the JCC put an agreement to halt the election with NBCC as witness at Chumukedima. When turmoil started on ULB election issue with JCC/NTAC targeting only TR Zeliang as CM to step down, Tokheho coolly stepped aside to even play mediator role to defuse situation. After the situation compelled T.R Zeliang to step down, Tokheho, expected his name to be called to replace TRZ, instead, when Dr. Shurhozelie took over the CM, TRZ insisted not to induct Tokheho in the Ministry. Tokheho began to talk against the Tenyimia leadership both in the party and Government. Mr. Nuklutoshi was excommunicated by Ao Senden on ULB related issue yet he was also dropped from Dr. Shurhozelie ministry on the advice of TRZ. Sir,

Good precedence or bad precedence leader

Real leaders are leaders for generations and leaders for generations are not for self-interest but for the interest of the people and to pave the way for the good of coming generation. Faith in God makes magnanimous heart which is above laws because laws are meant for bad men. Our beloved legislators should ask themselves whether they will opt for good precedented or bad precedented leader. Our people are to be more faith oriented than legal oriented ones. Rev L. NEW DELHI, Aug 12 (Agencies): There has been a 20%decline in cumulative cash holding by companies and individuals post demonetisation while the number of taxpayers has increased 45%since then, the Economic Survey has said, pointing to positives from the withdrawal of highdenomination banknotes in November last year. “The holding of cash is about Rs 3.5 lakh crore less than what might have been the case had predemonetisation trends prevailed,” said the Economic Survey 2016-17 Volume 2 that finance minister Arun Jaitley tabled in Parliament. “Demonetisation should continue to pay dividends over time as the impetus towards formalising the economy and expanding tax base that it has set in motion continues.” It said the number of taxpayers increased 45%in 2016-17 as an effect of demonetisation, compared to 25%rise in the previous year.

“The tax base did expand after demonetisation...the full effect of collections will monetise gradually as reported income of new payers grows,” the survey said. It has been nine months since demonetisation now. While estimating fall in cash holding, the Economic Survey has assumed that remonetisation has happened

fully and the supply of cash is now fully reflective of demand. The survey also said a new enforcement and compliance regime and increased digitalisation have reduced cash use for transactions. “Level and pace of digitalisation are substantially greater than before demonetisation.” This was visible across

poor, less affluent and affluent classes. Inter-bank transactions using Aadhaarenabled payment system for “digitally excluded,” for instance, have gone up from less than Rs 2 billion to over Rs 12 billion during November 2016-May 2017. On demonetisation’s impact on real estate, the survey said it was expected to reduce black market transactions, to be manifested in reduced property prices. The survey also said that while real growth of the economy decelerated after demonetisation, the nominal GDP growth actually accelerated. Growth for the year as a whole was much higher than 6.50-6.75%estimated in the first Economic Survey 2016-17, tabled on Parliament on January 31. It studied Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) data to examine if demonetisation induced greater demand for social insurance.

NEW DELHI, Aug 12 (Agencies): Food and Consumer Affairs minister Ram Vilas Paswan has said that the country has sufficient sugar supply and there was no need to import it. He also said that the government was keeping a watch on pulses price and would increase import duty if required. On the issue of wheat, he said that there was no plan to reduce import duty, which was currently at 10%. “There is no need to import more sugar at zero duty as of now as supplies are comfortable,” said Paswan while addressing a media gathering in Delhi on Saturday. A section of the industry has been asking the government to reduce import duty ahead of the festive season when consumption of the sweetener increases. In July this year the government increased import duty on sugar to 50% to curb dumping of the commodity in India as international prices fell. Paswan said, that at the start of the sugar season, the country had an opening stock of 7 million tonne sugar. “With this year’s production at 20.4 million tonne and imports of 0.5 million tonne, supplies this season are seen at 27.9 million tonne. This is sufficient for this season, “ the minister said. The carryover sugar stock at the end of this season is seen at 4.2 million tonne, which should be able to meet October-November demand, he added. Paswan said that demand in October was going to be 2-2.2 million tonne. “To ensure supplies are available and there is no scarcity in November, we have asked the states to ensure mills start cane crushing by then,” he said. On the issue of falling pulses prices in the domestic market, Paswan said that with a huge buffer stock of 2 million tonnes and increased imports by private trade, the prices in domestic market have crashed. “We have taken some immediate measures like putting a cap on the import of arhar dal at 2 lakh tonnes during this fiscal and are watching the situation,” he said.

Kolkata, Aug 12 (IANS): The number of tax slabs in the Goods and Services Tax (GST)regime would be reduced with improvement in revenue, Union Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal said here on Saturday. With the exempted category, the existing tax slabs are of 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent. Defending the different slabs, he said the central government was trying to introduce the new tax system with the consent of states and did not want to impose it. “The Centre could have taken decisions in the GST council on the basis of majority but that was not done,” the Minister said at an interactive session organised by Indian Chamber of Commerce. Meghwal also said as many as 13.2 lakh new dealers have registered themselves in the system so far after the implementation of GST. Out of which, 56,000 were from West Bengal, the highest in India. He said total number of registered dealers in the indirect tax system in the pre-GST regime was 80 lakh. Describing the GST Network (GSTN) as a “perfect system”, he said: “We must be facing some teething problems but it is a perfect system. The new system will remove inspector raj and there will be no human interface. The government will improve the GSTN system.”

In June, Sebi had allowed options trading in commodities to deepen the market but permitted each exchange to launch options on futures of only one commodity initially. Trading in options has been a long pending demand of the exchanges and market intermediaries. While the market watchdog had agreed to permit options trading last year itself, some legal requirements were holding back the move. Sebi had stipulated necessary guidelines with regard to the product design and risk management framework to be adopted for trading in options on commodity futures. India Inx began its operations on January 16, 2017 and is India’s first International Exchange set up at GIFT City in Gandhinagar. Mumbai, Aug 12 (PTI): BSEpromoted India International Exchange (India INX) will launch trading in gold options from August 30, a move which will allow investors an opportunity to hedge their risk without worrying about daily market volatility. India INX, which has received regulator Sebi’s nod to launch the product, has estimated that gold options, along with other gold contracts, would clock a daily average turnover of USD 35 million on the exchange’s platform. Recently, domestic commodity exchange MCX also said it has received Sebi’s approval to commence trading in gold options contracts. The bourse is likely to launch the product by August-end. “Gold options will give participants an opportunity to hedge their risk without worrying about daily volatility,” India INX managing director and CEO V Balasubramaniam said in a statement here. “This instrument will give buyer a right to buy or sell an underlier at a preset price on a future date,” he added.

New Delhi, Aug 12 (IANS): The Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate of 3 per cent on gold was low and needs to be increased as it is consumed by the “very rich”, feels Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian, the author of the Economic Survey. According to the Economic Survey Volume II 2016-17, tabled in Parliament on Friday, “The tax on gold and jewellery products - items that are disproportionately consumed by the very rich at 3 per cent is still low.” The document also stated that there was a need to tax education and healthcare. “Keeping health and education completely out is inconsistent with equity because these are services consumed disproportionately by the rich,” it said. Health and education are outside the tax net altogether, exempted under the GST and not otherwise

Palestinian woman stabs, wounds Israeli in Jerusalem

JERUSALEM, AUG 12 (AGENCIES): A Palestinian woman stabbed and wounded an Israeli man near an east Jerusalem flashpoint on Saturday, before she was arrested, police said. They said in an English-language statement that the incident occurred next to the Old City’s Damascus Gate, site of repeated past attacks, reports AFP. It said that a “female Arab terrorist” stabbed the man, injuring him lightly. The woman, a Jerusalem resident aged about 30, was arrested at the scene, police added. The Old City is located in east Jerusalem, which was occupied by Israel in 1967 and later annexed in a move never recognised by the international community. The July 14 killing there of two policemen by three Arab Israeli gunmen led to spiralling unrest after Israel responded by installing metal detectors at the

CAIRO, AUG 12 (PTI): At least 44 people were killed and nearly 180 others injured after two trains collided near Egypt’s coastal city of Alexandria, officials said. The Egyptian cabinet said in a statement that the number of deaths may increase and the final toll will be announced after clearing the debris of the two trains. The deadly collision took place yesterday after a train travelling to Alexandria from Cairo, crashed into the back of another train coming from the Canal city of Port Said, which was waiting at a small station in the district of Khorshid, east of Alexandria, the Egyptian Railways Authority said in a statement. TOKYO, AUG 12 (IANS): Japan said on Saturday it has installed anti-missile systems in several parts of the country following North Korea’s threat to launch four ballistic missiles towards the American island of Guam. The surface-to-air Patriot Advanced Capability 3 (PAC 3) has been deployed in the prefectures of Shimane, Hiroshima, Kochi and Ehime, the expected flight path of the North Korean projectiles, reports Efe news. Pyongyang on Thursday threatened to launch a ballistic missile attack against Guam in the western Pacific, where some 160,000 people live and where strategic bombers sent by the Pentagon are stationed. The plan unveiled by Pyongyang detailed the launch of four medium-long range Hwasong-12 rockets that will cross the sky above Shimane, Hiroshima and Kochi prefectures at a distance of 3,356.7 kms for 1,065 seconds (nearly 18 minutes) before hitting the waters 30 to 40 km away from Guam. Japan’s antimissile defence operation system deploys the navy’s Aegis to bring down airborne missiles while the PAC-3 system is used to counter the projectiles evading these interceptors.

Eminem teases new project with funny photograph

A

m e r ic a n r a ppe r Eminem has shared a cryptic photograph which likely hints at new music. Shared on Instagram, the image finds Eminem strumming an acoustic guitar by a campfire. “Camp Shady Summer 17” is written beneath the photograph, reports aceshowbiz. com. “ Ku m b aya ! M o r e soon from the Shady Shop. #CampShady,” so the “Love the way you lie” captioned the funny image. It is still unclear what the rapper is up to. Some fans believe that “Camp Shady” refers to a merchandise line, while others are convinced the rapper will release a new album this summer. As previously reported, Eminem is said to be releasing the follow-up to 2013’s “MMLP2” this year. While he has been quietly working on the project, it is believed that he collaborates with fellow rappers like Dr. Dre and 2 Chainz on the long-awaited effort.

opular Bollywood celebrities like Shyam Benegal, Shoojit Sircar, Madhur Bhandarkar and Rahul Dholakia have hailed the central government’s decision to replace Pahlaj Nihalani with noted lyricist and ad guru Prasoon Joshi as the new chief of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Joshi, who is “happy” to be the new CBFC chief, said: “I will always try to take opinion of people, who have right and positive thinking because this is very new to me.” Though he considers himself unaware about the functioning of CBFC, Joshi calls himself a “sensible man”, who “believes in taking responsibilities”. Talking about Joshi’s appointment, Sircar told IANS: “I think Prasoon Joshi is absolutely eligible.

He has been a part of the mainstream film industry. He knows exactly...he himself is a creative person. So, I think he will understand much deeper what we filmmakers want and what people should watch. It’s a great move that Prasoon Joshi has come on board.” Actors Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Bidita Bag’s “Babumoshai Bandookbaaz” was the latest Bollywood film which got into trouble with Nihalani, who had suggested 48 cuts in the film despite giving it an ‘A’

certificate. Kiran Shyam Shroff, one of the producers of “Babumoshai Bandookbaaz”, sees the move as a a welcome change. “I think the incidents during ‘Babumoshai Bandoojbaaz’ put the final nail in the coffin. In the last few years, most of the producers faced problems to get certification of their films. Every time, after the controversy, people demanded his resignation but did not happen.” She believes that as times are changing, people have to get rid of “regressive mind” and need to understand others perspective. Joshi is known for his contribution to films like “Black”, “Taare Zameen essie J has returned Par”, “Bhaag Milkha with new single ‘Real Bhaag”, “Rang De BasanDeal’, her first since ti”, “Delhi-6” and “Neer- 2015’s ‘Flashlight’. ja”, and for designing sucThe release follows cessful ad campaigns. a short hiatus from music

ricketer Gautam Gambhir on Saturday joined a campaign to encourage people to pledge to donate organs, at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals here. “I am extremely humbled to be a part of this drive. Organ donation is an egalitarian and a moral act,” said Gambhir, who is also an ambassador for “Gift a Life.” Gift A Life is an initiative launched in 2011 to create awareness about organ donation to save countless lives and is supported by the Apollo Transplant Institutes. “Thousands die every year for want of organs and I feel that this initiative will bridge the gap by spreading awareness in the society,”

said Gambhir, who has already pledged to donate all his organs. Every year nearly five lakh people die in India due to non-availability of organs. Nearly 1.5 lakh people are in dire need of kidney transplants but only 3,000 of them receive one. “One of the major reasons is lack of awareness about organ donation in India at large where majority of the population is still shackled with myths and religious beliefs, hence there is an urgent need to address this issue and create sound awareness,” said Anupam Sibal, Group Medical Director and Senior Paediatric Gastroenterologist at Apollo Hospitals Group.

The problem is, I’m so damn analytical I can point out exactly what didn’t work. If I had 20 minutes with the filmmaker ahead of time, I might have been able to help. But that’s just not how this business works.”

Speaking to the paper, Cameron noted that “The subsequent Alien films haven’t been as good as Alien and Aliens. They set a standard the other movies were judged against. That’s true of the Terminator films as well.” James Cameron directed Aliens, the 1986 sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1979 Alien original. Two years previous, he made his Hollywood breakthrough with the original Terminator movie, which itself has spawned four sequels, with a fifth in the works. Cameron continued by stating that his doesn’t feel that sequels affect the legacy of the original film. “It doesn’t diminish the original accomplishment in any way,” he said. “If anything it makes the original seem better by comparison.” He also admitted to being disappointed by many Hollywood sequels. “That

Burnley stun nine-man Chelsea; Everton win

Vokes celebrates with his Burnley team-mates after scoring a goal against Chelsea.

Lo n d o n, Au g 1 2 (Agencies): Chelsea’s defence of the Premier League crown got off to the worst possible start as they were stunned 3-2 by Burnley at Stamford Bridge.

The misery began early for Antonio Conte’s team who had captain Gary Cahill dismissed on 12 minutes for a nasty lunge on Steven Defour. The visitors smelt blood

and Sam Vokes, who had a header disallowed on 18 minutes, put Sean Dyche’s side ahead soon after with a lovely steered volley. S t e p h e n Wa r d ’s screamer doubled their ad-

vantage five minutes before the break and they still had to time to stun the champions a third time, Vokes heading past Thibaut Courtois to give the Clarets a 3-0 half-time lead. New signing Alvaro Morata gave the Blues a glimmer of hope when he glanced home Willian’s pinpoint cross on 68 minutes. However, their chances of an unlikely comeback seemed over when Cesc Fabregas was dismissed for receiving a second yellow card. Despite this David Luiz halved the deficit when he volleyed home from close range but Burnley stood firm against a late onslaught to register a deserved win. Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney enjoyed a day to remember as he scored his first goal for Everton in 13 years to earn them a hard-

fought 1-0 win over Stoke City at Goodison Park. After a dull opening half, Rooney, on his second debut for the club, headed Everton into the lead right on half-time, the former Manchester United forward sending a lovely looped header from Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s tempting cross. Calvert-Lewin went close for the Toffees while Mark Hughes’ side never really looked like grabbing an equaliser.

Shikhar Dhawan guides India to 329/6 on Day 1 Pallekele, Aug 12 (Agencies): Sri Lankan spinners managed to restrict pull back a few things for their team as India did not make the most of Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul’s 188-run opening stand to end Day 1 of the third Test at 329/6 here on Saturday. For Sri Lanka, Malinda Pushpakumara and Lakshan Sandakan scalped three and two wickets respectively while Vishwa Fernando dismissed Ravichandran Ashwin in the 88th over of day’s play to end Sri Lanka’s day on a high. After Virat Kohli won Shikhar Dhawan gestures towards team’s dressing room as the toss and elected to bat, he celebrates scoring a century on Saturday. (AP/PTI)

Dhawan, who brought up his sixth Test ton, and Rahul, who entered the record books by scoring his seventh consecutive Test fifty, made the most of the batting conditions following some lucky reprieves. The duo scored 134 runs in the opening session and threatened to take Sri Lankan bowlers to the cleaners before Pushpakumara removed Rahul in his first over in the second session. Sri Lanka manged to scalp two more wickets in that session as Shikhar Dhawan (119) and Cheteshwar Pujara () too were dismissed before tea. While it was expected that Kohli and Ajinkya Ra-

hane will make merry on a batting-friendly wicket, the two could not score many with Kohli getting out for 42 off Sandakan and Rahane getting out on Pushpakumara’s bowling. R Ashwin, who once again contributed with the bat with 31 runs, was the last man to get out before stumps as Hardik Pandya and Wriddhiman Saha managed to keep their wickets before the end of day’s play. Brief score: India 329/6 at stumps- Shikhar Dhawan (119), KL Rahul (85); Malinda Pushpakumara (3/40), Lakshan Sandakan (2/84).
