Prez for strong electoral reforms, more LS seats Spl. Correspondent/Agencies
NEW DELHI, APR 8 (NPN): President of India, Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday called for a strong electoral system in the country to strengthen the democratic structure, saying it was time to look at legal provisions for increasing the number of parliamentary seats. “Timely reforms are necessary which not only would give justice to the people but also to the ideals enshrined in the Constitution of India. Hence it is necessary to undertake a dispassionate analysis of the way in which our electoral process is functioning with a view to address the shortcomings in the system,” Pranab said while addressing the All India Seminar on “Economic Reforms With Reference to Electoral Issues” organised by the Confederation of the Indian Bar in New Delhi. Noting that only 543 Lok Sabha constituencies represent 1.28 billion people in the country, the President said coalition governments at the Centre has contributed to unstable governments necessitating frequent elections in the past and that fragile
A ‘mindset’ in South Asia encourages terrorism: Modi NEW DELHI, APR 8 (AGENCIES): In a veiled attack on Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said there is a “mindset” in South Asia which encourages and patronises terrorism. Modi’s remarks came in the presence of Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina as the two leaders paid tributes to the heroes of 1971 war. “I am very clear that along with India, its neighbouring countries should also move ahead on the path of development. We want development of the entire region. But there is a mentality in South Asia against this mindset. A mindset that promotes terrorism, which has a value system which is not based on humanity, but on violence and extremism,” the Modi said during a function to honour the 1971 war heroes. “The main aim (of this ideology) is to spread terrorism. A mindset in which policy makers feel terrorism is bigger than humanity, destruction is bigger than creation and betrayal is bigger than trust. This mentality is the biggest challenge to peace, social harmony and development. This mentality obstructs development in whole region,” Modi said, adding, “India and Bangladesh are its victims.”

coalition did not last. He also referred to the issue of responsibility to the electorate and said that Parliament is not merely a deliberative body but a decision-making body. The Constitution (Forty Second Amendment) Act, 1976 imposed a freeze on the population figure for readjustment in the 1971 census and has been extended by the Constitution (Eighty-fourth Amendment) Act 2001 till 2026, the President said. “As a result, the House of the People (Lok Sabha) today represents the population figure of the 1971 census, whereas our popu-
lation has increased manifold in the recent decades,” Mukherjee said “This gives rise to an anomalous situation wherein today, India has over 800 million voters and 543 Lok Sabha constituencies represent 1.28 billion people.” In 1971, India’s population was 54 crores, which has now increased to 121 crores as per the 2011 census. “If Great Britain can have more than 600 parliamentary constituencies, why can’t India, with a much higher population, have more number of seats?” the President asked. He said a strong elec-
toral system was necessary to strengthen the democratic structure of India. “From 1952 to this date, no political party in India has won election by scoring 51% of votes... So the question comes that a vast number of votes polled whether they would have some sort of representation,” the President said. President Pranab Mukherjee and Chief Justice of India JS Khehar at the inauguration of the All India Seminar organised by the Confederation of Indian Bar at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on Saturday. (PTI) Chief Justice of India
JS Khehar said electoral promises remain unfulfilled and manifestos turn out to be mere pieces of paper, for which political parties must be held accountable. “Nowadays, manifestos have become a mere piece of paper. For this, political parties have to be made accountable,” the CJI said. Political parties give “brazen” excuses such as lack of consensus amongst their members to justify non-fulfilment of their poll promises, he added. The CJI said none of the manifestos during the 2014 general elections indicated any link between electoral reforms and the Constitutional goal of ensuring economic-social justice to the marginalised section. He said pursuant to the Supreme Court’s directions to the Election Commission of India to formulate guidelines against freebies, the poll panel has been taking action against parties for violation of the model code of conduct. Supreme Court judge Justice Dipak Misra also stressed the need for electoral reforms, saying that holding of elections has to be “sans criminalisation”.
Hindu group stops UP church prayers suspecting conversion L U C K N OW, A P R 8 (IANS): Prayers at a Church in Uttar Pradesh were disrupted by a group of Hindu activists as they suspected a religious conversion in progress, police said on Saturday. Prayers at the Maharajganj Church were stopped by the police after the office bearers of the Hindu Vahini created a ruckus and alleged that some people were leading a conversion event there. The Hindu Vahini leaders said that a group of foreign tourists from Ukraine and the US had come to the church with an aim to allure poor locals into converting to Christianity. The prayers were initiated on Friday at the Church in Bijapaar village under the Kothibhaar area, the group said. The foreign tourists who were in the country on a month-long tourist visa were accompanied by Devraj Gowda, a Delhi resident who identified himself to the police as the chairman of the Seva Group of India. Police officers questioned the group as to how they could lead prayers when they were on a tourist visas. The group, however, said
they were not here for any conversions but were taking part in spiritual conventions slated across Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Delhi. The Church authorities have also denied any conversion programme.
Centre swats away charges of ‘polarization’
Downplaying charges of attempts at polarization following a Church prayer service being halted by the right-wing Hindu Yuva Vahini in Uttar Pradesh, the Centre has expressed its complete faith in the Yogi Adityanath-led Government in maintaining the law and order situation in the state. The youth group, set up by Adityanath in 2002, interrupted the prayer service alleging that religious conversion was being carried out and filed a complaint against Yohannan Adam, the pastor of the church, accusing him of converting Hindus to Christianity, which was flatly denied by the latter. “As far as BJP is concerned, there is no attempt to polarize and have never been so. We stand vindicated after the results in Uttar Pradesh
and Manipur, where it was being alleged that the BJP is trying to polarize communities. If that were true, then the BJP would not have received such an overwhelming mandate, which means people voted for BJP across the caste and religion lines,” Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Jitendra Singh told the media here. Further asserting that the Uttar Pradesh Government is capable of dealing with the situation in a fair manner, Singh highlighted his faith in the Chief Minister’s capability and decisiveness. The service, which was being attended by more than 150 people including foreign tourists, was interrupted by the youth group who barged into the hall and created a ruckus. “The police personnel even climbed onto our holy altar and took away our bible and song books. They even questioned all those who came to attend the prayer.” Pastor Adam told ANI. This is not the first such instance has come to light, as earlier this year the Hindu Yuva Vahini had attacked
TASU to go ahead with NBCC, ACAUT join hands for Wife of NSCN (K) functionary, indefinite road blockade ‘Clean Election Campaign’ 3 others held with `18.5 lakh
DIMAPUR, APR 8 (NPN): Not satisfied with the response from the department, the Tizit Area Students’ Union (TASU) on Saturday affirmed to launch its proposed indefinite blockade on Namtola-Mon road starting from April 11. In a press release, TASU president, Manpang Wangyen, and general secretary, Tahkai Wangsahum, said the union received a response letter from the executive engineer (PWD) Mon on April 8, 2017. The letter requested the union not to impose road blockade as some work progress was made in regard to TASU’s demand in the ultimatum dated March 30, 2017, which was served on the state government. However, TASU said its executives after thorough deliberation on the matter decided to go ahead with the
road blockade as response letter contained no assurance from the state government or the responsible department. TASU stated that it would start road blockade from April 11 if its demands were not fulfilled before April 10, 2017. The union has, however, exempted school going students, administration, military and police personnel on duty and medical. Meanwhile, TASU said the Inter-State connectivity (ISC) road (Tizit-Nokzang) 2010-11 has been added in the demand list, which was missed out in the last ultimatum. It said the already sanctioned amount of Rs.36.28 crore to the concerned contractor for ISC road has not executed the works as per the DPR norms and completion period has expired with very less work progress. That, all the pastors, including the church workers such as deacons, missionaries, and evangelists sign the Clean Election Pledge and the same will be administered to all the members eligible to vote. 3. That, all the intending candidates should adhere to the NBCC Clean Election guidelines. 4. On the Election Day, the pastors in the villages, regardless of the denominations will take the spiritual role along with the village level Clean Election Committee so that the clean election campaign is taken to its logical conclusion. 5. The civil societies in every level including
ACAUT will support and in this NBCC will tape the strength and force of the youth and the intellectual into the movement. NBCC and ACAUT also decided to hold regular meetings for better cooperation. NBCC further agreed to continue its Clean Election Campaign in the state and grassroots levels by roping in the Church, village authority, women and youth and provide any support to any civil/religious organization in this endeavour. NBCC lauded ACAUT for taking upon the burden to embark on the awareness campaign by going to the districts and constituencies to raise the awareness. In this regard, NBCC said it would delegate the associations to extend logistic support to mobilize the masses as and when the need arises.

2,000-foot-long Asteroid to fly ‘very close’ to earth WSU flays survey works WASHINGTON, APR 8 (IANS): A large near-Earth asteroid discovered nearly three years ago will fly safely past Earth on April 19th, US space agency NASA has said. The space rock, known as 2014 JO25, is estimated to be 2,000 feet in size. It is expected to fly by Earth at a safe distance of about 1.1 million miles (1.8 million kilometres), or about 4.6 times the distance from Earth to the moon, Xinhua news agency reported on Friday. “Although there is no possibility for the asteroid to collide with our planet, this will be a very close approach for an asteroid of this size,” NASA was quoted as saying. Small asteroids pass within this distance of Earth several times each week, but this upcoming approach is “the closest by any known asteroid of this size, or larger, since asteroid

by at one lunar distance. In addition, the encounter on April 19 is also “the closest this asteroid has come to Earth for at least the last 400 years and will be its closest approach for at least the next 500 years,” NASA added. The asteroid will approach Earth from the di-
rection of the sun and will become visible in the night sky after April 19. It is predicted to brighten to about magnitude 11, when it could be visible in small optical telescopes for one or two nights before it fades as the distance from Earth rapidly increases, NASA added.
DIMAPUR, APR 8 (NPN): Wonthoi (Wonsoi) Students Union (WSU) has vehemently condemned the proposed joint survey by India and Myanmar in between BP 145 and BP 146 along the border at ITC DAN. In a press release, WSU president, Hime Lam, and assistant general secretary, Y.Lango, said the survey work was intended to be carried out without the consent of the indigenous inhabitants of the region. WSU also expressed deep concern that conducting survey works and drawing boundary lines based on the imaginary line demarcated by the British would only escalate more tensions and cause hardships to inhabitants. The union said drawing boundary lines would only bring divisions among many families, houses and native villages that were liv-
ing in harmony. Pointing out that the region was one of the most remote and undeveloped areas on both sides of the border, the WSU said the governments should focus more on developmental works for better education, health and road connectivity. The union has also appealed to the surveying teams of both the countries to stop the propose work and rather strengthen communication and dialogue through friendly consultation, which was mutually acceptable to both the countries without compromising the well being of the indigenous inhabitants. Meanwhile, WSU has strongly supported the joint memorandum submitted to the state chief minister by four Pangsha range village councils seeking CM’s intervention on border issues.
The three other accomplices were identified as E Keliato (31), Hozhily (54), Qhutoli (34) and a boy from Karom village. During the search operation, AR troops seized Rs 18.5 lakh in Indian currency, two laptops and other items. Police said the money was neatly packed inside the sanitary pad packets. The arrested persons were later handed over to women cell of Lamphel police station, Imphal West district, police said.

NSCN/GPRN condemns AR raid DIMAPUR: NSCN/ GPRN has strongly condemned the raid carried out by 3 Assam Rifles under the command of major Narendra at the residence of Z. James Angami, kilonser and member, Cease-Fire Monitoring Cell (CFMC), during the wee hours of April 8 at Kohima Village. In a condemnation note, MIP NSCN/GPRN claimed that despite identifying himself as a card holder bearing No.111 and a member of CFMC, the AR alleged that he owned a Chinese Rifle and insisted on surrendering the same. Having denied that he possessed such Rifle (even if he had he is entitled being a card holder), the AR forcefully ransacked the rooms of his building thereby causing mental trauma to his wife and children and creating fear psychosis in the minds of nearby public, MIP stated, adding the major even allowed the cadres to intrude into the room of James’s daughter without
permission. However, MIP said, it failed to bear any witnesses to their nefarious design and ill motives. According to MIP, such act of AR “shows their infidelity to the yearning for peace and harmony by the peace loving Nagas”, which it said was unwarranted on the part of the AR to engage themselves in hostile activities under the pretext of specific information, which not only violate Cease-fire ground rules but also sowed seeds of mistrust between the two negotiating parties. Therefore, while condemning the raid, NSCN/ GPRN reminded the AR that such provocation was not the first time and if unchecked, will have a serious ramification in considering the initiative towards a lasting final solution to the ongoing political talks. MIP further urged upon the Government of India should fix responsibility upon the erring officer for such unjustifiable action.
Deputy commissioner Kiphire, Sedevikho Khro in his speech stated that the opening of polytechnic would be a blessing for the young generation. He also thanked the development of technical education for giving a polytechnic institute to Kiphire district. The program was attended by govt. officers, officials of USLP, student leaders, chairman, GBs and public of Langkok village.

People to decide about Dalai Lama’s institution culture and ecology,” he added. China on Wednesday lodged a protest with India over the Dalai Lama’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh and Indian Ambassador Vijay Gokhale was summoned to lodge a protest. “By inviting and approving (the) Dalai Lama to (visit) disputed areas between China and India, India has damaged our interests and the IndiaChina relationship and it has fuelled tensions,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying had said. The India-China border along Arunachal Pradesh is separated by the McMahon Line, an imaginary border now known as the Line of Actual Control (LAC). India and China fought a border war in 1962, with Chinese troops advancing deep into Arunachal Pradesh and inflicting heavy casualties on poorly armed Indian troops.
The border dispute with China was inherited by India from British rulers, who hosted a 1914 conference with the Tibetan and Chinese governments that set the border in what is now Arunachal Pradesh. China has never recognised the 1914 McMahon Line and claims 90,000 sq km, including nearly all of Arunachal Pradesh. India accuses China of occupying 8,000 sq km in Jammu and Kashmir. After 1962, tensions flared again in 1986 with Indian and Chinese forces clashing in Sumdorong Chu valley of Arunachal Pradesh. Chinese troops reportedly built a helipad in the valley leading to the fresh skirmishes.

IMPHAL, Apr 8: Manipur governor Dr Najma Heptulla Saturday appealed Joint Action Committee Against Anti-Tribal Bills (JACATB) to allow a “decent burial with all religious rites” to the eight victims who died during agitations against antimigrant bills in 2015. The appeal from the governor came up barely a day after a talk between agitating JACATB and Manipur government ended on positive nod on Friday. Nine youths lost their lives in a series of violent uprising in Manipur’s Churachandpur district against the passing of three bills for regulating entry of ‘nonManipuris’ into the state. Of the nine victims of the violent, the last rites of one was performed in December last year while other eight bodies were still lying as unclaimed bodies in the Churachandpur district hospital morgue.
JACATB, spearheading the agitations after tagging the three bills as “anti-tribal bills” is refusing to accept the bodies even after the President of India withheld The Protection of Manipur People Bill, 2015 and the remaining two, The Manipur Land Reform and Land Revenue (Seventh Amendment) Bill, 2015, and the Shops and Estagblishment (2nd Amendment) Bill, 2015 are being examined by experts. In her appeal note, the governor expressed concern as the family members of the deceased have not been able to perform the last rites and give a decent burial to their loved ones. “This is heart wrenching and not in consonance with the teachings of any of our religions,” the governor noted. She stated that times have changed and after the 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly Elections a new popular government was now in place. “I am happy

PM’s remark far from ground reality: Omar
S RI NAG A R , A PR 8 (AGENCIES): The National Conference today hit out Prime Minister Narendra Modi for asking Kashmiri youths to choose between “tourism and terrorism”, saying the remark was far from ground realities. NC working president Omar Abdullah also said that linking tourism and terrorism was flawed at the outset as Kashmir received the highest number of tourists before the advent of militancy in the Valley in 1988. He also hit out at Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti for failing to bring a peaceful solution to the problem in the state. “Whether the message was right or not, you can guess yourself. Militancy or terrorism did not erupt due to lack of tourism. The highest number of tourists visited the state a year before the militancy erupted,” Omar said after holding an election meeting at Pulwama in South Kashmir, 35 kilometres from here. The former chief minister said if terrorism started in the state despite a tourism boom, it was obvious that there was no relation

Questioning the rationale behind linking tourism and terrorism, he asked what should the youths do who hail from areas where there is no scope for tourism. “If you say that the youth here have to choose between tourism and terrorism, then tell me about those areas where there is not much scope for tourism. Are we directly pushing people in those areas towards terrorism? It is
rangements are in place to ensure smooth voting in the Srinagar-Budgam Parliamentary constituency by-poll on Sunday as separatists have called for a poll boycott, officials said. Heavy deployment of police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was made throughout Srinagar, Budgam and Ganderbal districts, where the 15 assembly segments comprising the constituency are located. All polling staff and the security component for the polling stations in the constituency reached their places of duty on Saturday evening. Authorities said adequate arrangements for food and lodging had been made for the polling staff who will spend the night at the polling stations. Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Shantmanu on Saturday visited several polling booths here and reviewed the final arrangements. Calling on the officials on the ground to work with dedication to make the elections successful, free and fair the CEO, who was accompanied by other officials, interacted with the polling staff at the booths and enquired whether all the facilities have been provided.

Haryana sex ratio touches 950 mark for first time CHANDIGARH, APR 8 (AGENCIES): For the first time in the history of Haryana, the sex ratio in the state has touched the 950 mark. Haryana is notorious for its skewed sex ratio. Chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar said on Friday that the sex ratio at birth stood at 950 girls to 1,000 boys in March this year. This was for the first time in the history of the state, he said. As per district-wise data, the sex ratio at birth during March in Kaithal, Rohtak, Jhajjar, Gurugram, Bhiwani, Jind, Fatehabad, Panchkula, Rewari, Ambala, Mewat, Sonepat and Faridabad was 864, 863, 893, 893, 893, 896, 898, 912, 913, 921, 926, 939 and 947 respectively. The ratio in Karnal, Hisar, Yamunanagar, Sirsa, Kurukshetra, Panipat, Palwal and Narnaul was 953, 972, 974, 976, 980, 993, 1,217 and 1,279 respectively, as per information provided by the state government. Khattar said that the state had, after the launch of ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ programme by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Haryana, accepted the challenge of improving the skewed sex ratio.

NEW DELHI, APR 8 (AGENCIES): Reacting to the cancellation of allotment of bungalow for AAP office, CM Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday said AAP will see re-allotment of 206 Rouse Avenue for party office. “The cancellation of allotment of office will not affect AAP’s spirits to work for the common man. We will work from the streets, but will not allow our struggle to weaken,” he told media persons at his residence. “Place for office is our right. We are not begging,” Kejriwal said. He claimed that the office was allotted to AAP according to rules. LG Anil Baijal on Friday cancelled the allotment of AAP office on the basis of Shunglu committee report which flagged irregularities in allotment of 206 Rouse Avenue, earlier a minister’s residence, to run AAP office.
LG ordered the cancellation of allotment of AAP office after it received a response from PWD of Delhi government on the issue. The decision followed submission of the Shunglu Committee report on the government’s decisions which had bypassed former LG Najeeb Jung’s approval. The AAP-led Delhi government’s decision of allotment was declared null and void because land is Centre’s subject. In the last 24 hours, Kejriwal said, many people from Delhi have called him to offer their houses and offices to house AAP office. Alleging discrimination against AAP, Kejriwal said: “It is the first instance after independence that the ruling party does not have office in the state where it won with a thumping majority.” Calling it a politically motivated move against

New Delhi, Apr 8 (IANS): The National Legal Service Authority (NALSA) will be organising Lok Adalats across the country on the second Saturday of every alternate month. Speaking to newsmen, Supreme Court judge Justice Dipak Misra said all India Lok Adalats would cover cases relating to cheque bouncing, motor vehicles, pension and service matters and matrimonial disputes among other issues. By 2 p.m. on Saturday, more than two lakh cases were settled in the Lok Adalats held across the country, he said. Describing the Lok Adalats as a “win-win” situation for both the sides to the dispute, Justice Misra, who is the Executive Chairman of NALSA, said that in the settlement of disputes through Lok Adalts, everyone knows that nobody was taking away your dues and one was getting only what was due to him or her.

Gaikwad including Sections 308 (culpable homicide) and 355 (assault) for (the) incident.... Police investigation is underway, FIRs have been filed, and justice will surely be delivered,” Sinha said. The minister said the government is working out a system to prevent recurrence of misbehaviour on aircraft. “MoCA (ministry of civil aviation) is strengthening rules so that a national no-
fly list can be implemented, such incidents can be prevented, and safety improved. Air travellers should note that safety and security for passengers and crew is our paramount priority. Unruly / disruptive behaviour will result in severe consequences. This includes police action for a specific incident as well as being placed on a no-fly list. A flying ban is meant to prevent future unruly behaviour, not to punish past behaviour.” Sinha’s tweets came after all airlines — AI and private carriers like IndiGo, Jet and SpiceJet — were asked to lift the ban on Gaikwad. The Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA), comprising IndiGo, Jet, SpiceJet and GoAir issued a statement on Saturday, saying: “Consequent to Air India restoring
flying privileges to Gaikwad after being satisfied with the statement given by the MP, FIA member airlines are also restoring the flying privileges to Gaikwad under the assurance that our assets and colleagues shall be accorded the respect that they deserve for the hard work they put in every day.” This was followed by Vistara saying: “We support the decisions of our industry peers taken in the interest of the safety of air passengers and flight operations and in upholding the dignity of airline staff. We stood in solidarity with Air India and members of the FIA during this recent episode that challenged both these critical aspects. We continue to stand by them today in their decision to revoke the ban.
Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and said that his party is being targeted for working for the people. Kejriwal’s angry reaction came a day after Delhi LG cancelled the allotment of AAP office in the national capital “They can snatch our office but we will keep fighting for people. We will work from the roads,” Kejriwal said at a press conference. “Congress has four offices and a plot, BJP has seven offices and a plot while AAP which got 67 seats in Delhi has no office,” he said. “Taking away our office is injustice. Even the RJD and the BSP have an office in Delhi but our office has been snatched,” the Delhi chief minister said. He also said that AAP is a recognised party and having an office is their right.

Humility of peace
alm Sunday (five days before crucifixion) marks the moment when Jesus Christ, the Son of God entered Jerusalem in triumph riding on the back of a donkey while crowds, who would later call for Him to be killed, paid homage to him. As per Christian beliefs and tradition, Palm Sunday was the beginning of a week before His death and resurrection. Palm Sunday commemorates the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. The significance of Jesus riding a donkey and having his way paved with palm branches is a fulfilment of a prophecy spoken by the prophet Zechariah (Zechariah 9:9). The name Palm Sunday comes from the palm branches that people laid down in Jesus’ path as He rode into Jerusalem on the donkey. Palm branches are a widely recognised symbol of peace and victory, and in Biblical times were often thrown before the feet of a conquering hero in homage. When Jesus arrived in the Holy City, the Gospel writers said the crowds lay palm branches and clothes at his feet to honour Him. It had been predicted in the Old Testament that people would recognise the Messiah when he rode into the city, and they would then lay palms at His feet. Throughout the Hebrew Scriptures, the promise of a Messiah is clearly given. These messianic prophecies were made hundreds, sometimes thousands of years before Jesus Christ was born, In fact, from Genesis to Malachi, there are over 300 specific prophecies detailing the coming of the promised messiah and prince of peace. Of the best-known prophecies in the Hebrew Scriptures concerning the death of Messiah, Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53 certainly stand out. Psalm 22 is especially amazing since it predicted numerous separate elements about Jesus’ crucifixion a thousand years before Jesus was crucified. In many Christian denominations, worship services on Palm Sunday include a procession of the faithful carrying palms, representing the palm branches the crowd scattered in front of Jesus as he rode into Jerusalem. In the accounts of the four canonical Gospels, Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem takes place about a week before the next Sunday or Resurrection Sunday. The symbolism of the donkey symbolises the intent of Jesus in riding not as a warrior but a harbinger of peace. Thus Christ is also referred to as the Prince of Peace for He came to earth to make peace between Man and God. To achieve the purpose, Christ had to sacrifice His life in order to pay ransom for the sins of mankind and free them from the curse by receiving Him as the sent Messiah. In the simplest of terms, Palm Sunday is an occasion for reflecting on the final week of Jesus’ life. The observance of Palm Sunday is an annual reminder for the people about the fulfilment of God’s promise. However, for those who profess to be followers of the Christian faith, it is also a time to introspect on one’s spiritual life with the spiritual journey of the week prior to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is also a time for Christians to prepare their hearts for the agony of His Passion and the joy of His Resurrection.
DailyDevotion His Resurrection Destiny Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory? —Luke 24:26 Our Lord’s Cross is the gateway into His life. His resurrection means that He has the power to convey His life to me. When I was born again, I received the very life of the risen Lord from Jesus Himself. Christ’s resurrection destiny— His foreordained purpose— was to bring “many sons to glory” (Hebrews 2:10). The fulfilling of His destiny gives Him the right to make us sons and daughters of God. We never have exactly the same relationship to God that the Son of God has, but we are brought by the Son into the relation of sonship. When our Lord rose from the dead, He rose to an absolutely new life— a life He had never lived before He was God Incarnate. He rose to a life that had never been before. And what His resurrection means for us is that we are raised to His risen life, not to our old life. One day we will have a body like His glorious body, but we can know here and now the power and effectiveness of His resurrection and can “walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4). Paul’s determined purpose was to “know Him and the power of His resurrection” (Philippians 3:10). Jesus prayed, “…as You have given Him authority over all flesh that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him” (John 17:2). The term Holy Spirit is actually another name for the experience of eternal life working in human beings here and now. The Holy Spirit is the deity of God who continues to apply the power of the atonement by the Cross of Christ to our lives. Thank God for the glorious and majestic truth that His Spirit can work the very nature of Jesus into us, if we will only obey Him.

T
he stretch of road between Dimapur and Kohima, the National Highway 29 also covered under Asian Highway (AH) 1 and AH2 currently under four laning without any exaggeration has taken a lot of lives. If statistics are sought, this road might be responsible for most human fatalities in Nagaland next to factional clashes keeping aside those from other causes. There will be many residents of Kohima and Dimapur in particular and even those from beyond the two districts and the state of Manipur to whom someone known could have gotten maimed or killed in an accident along this stretch. The rate of vehicular accidents might most probably very soon go up as foreseen by many due to excavation works for the 4 lane, not meaning to cause trepidations but this road before completion will sadly be taking some more precious, innocent lives. Therefore it is necessary and about time the government

he word of God in Psalms 115:16 says: “The Heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’s; but the earth hath he given to the children of men.” Here, what I want to emphasis is this: That though both heaven and earth have been created by God (Ps. 115:15), God had reserved his right to rule heaven and ordained man to rule the earth on his behalf. That is why Jesus had taught us to pray: “They will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”(Matt.6:10). To put it in Munroe’s beautiful words: “The ultimate goal of God the creator was to colonize earth with heaven.” In the light of this truth, I am using a figurative expression in which, by HEAVEN, I mean God’s realm, and by EARTH, I mean man’s realm. And in this distinction between Heaven and Earth, I want to say that there are certain things in which Heaven will not intervene for earth. This is so, because Heaven (or God) has already sanctioned and assigned some laws to man for ruling the earth with those laws. These laws are laws that have to do with our earthly affairs like man’s social lives, political lives, civil administration lives and even religious lives. Now “to rule” means to be in charge of. But to rule, we need “rules” or to be exact-“laws.” These “rules” or “laws” have already been given by God to mankind but man has no absolute freedom to formulate, twist or distort these laws according to his own whims and fancies. For example man has not been given the freedom to frame a law that will permit him
through appropriate channels and deserved actions provide professional, official advisories to travellers. Also putting proper mechanisms in place so that both preventive and recovery response to any eventuality does not lack and also temporary regulations should also be made effective after proper consultation with concerned departments and agencies. Dimapur-Kohima NH 29 has always been a recipe for disaster. The alignment, the gradient, the amount of traffic and the speed of vehicles has always required extreme caution. Now the scale has been raised very higher! Emergency response services should be promptly be stationed in some static locations 24X7 starting now till monsoons are over. Mobile traffic personals and armed police units should also be arranged to patrol continuously and assist stranded travellers, accident victims and without doubt to take control of incidents of road rage which will hit the roof! Some non-regular inputs
from driving experience. 1. Avoid recreational travel between the two districts for the time being. 2. The Dimapur -Kohima road should be given a 3 to 4 hour timeline excluding traffic jams. 3. It is very important now, more than ever that vehicle tyres be in good condition and right amount of air pressure. 4. Avoid straying too close to heavy vehicles and give them right of way. 5. Over taking should be done with extreme caution. 6. If travelling at night stop to wash headlights at regular intervals. 7. Stop to assist other motorist in breakdowns and do not hesitate to ask for help if you get into one. 8. Expect to spend hours stuck on the road due to accidents or other factors. 9. Avoid road rage. 10. Follow traffic rules and driving etiquette at all cost! Peter Rutsa
no laws given for civil or criminal administration as it was an age of innocence. There were no criminal offenders until Cain killed Abel. Then with this first murder in human history there came in an avalanche of criminal offenders so that by Chapter 4 of Genesis, Lamech was boasting: “If Cain shall be avenged seven fold, truly Lamech seventy and seven fold” (Gen 4:23,24). Then as evil multiplied, by Chapter 6 of Genesis, God had lamented to Noah: “The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth” (Gen. 6:13). And to cut a long story short, after the world wide flood, civil codes were set up where God declared: “Whoso sheddeth man’s blood; by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God made he man”(Gen 9:6). Finally, by the time of Moses and the Exodus, codified law was finally written down on stone tablets by the very fingers of God (Ex. 20 & Dt.:10). This same codified law is today, universally practiced by all Governments on earth which are mentioned in Romans chapter 13. Now, these laws of God, written by God, and given to man for application in God’s fallen world, is God’s own second multicolored Rainbow stretching over the expanse of the universe. This Rainbow connects heaven to earth. At the one end of the Rainbow is the heart of God and at the other end is the heart of man. O
Sir,
I hope this appeal will find you in good health and spirit. It is a matter of great joy that today Nagaland is fortunate to have a seasoned and steady Chief Minister. The issues raised in the recently concluded Assembly Session regarding excess employees vis-à-vis resource availability is rather extremely alarming in view of the following reasons: 1. That Nagaland has the highest ratio in the entire country in terms of government employees to population ratio. Out of proximately 19 lakhs population, there are 1.60 lakhs employees which comprise about 8.4% of the total population. 2. That about 65% of the available fund is spent in meeting the salary of the 1.60 lakhs employees and only 35% is left for 17.40 lakhs persons by way of development works. 3. The above fact implies that 8.4% of the populations who are government employees consume 65% of the total available fund and the remaining 91.60% general public are left with mere 35% of

to kill anybody he does not like. Rather it is God who has given his laws regarding punishment for different kinds of crimes including capital punishments, depending on the severity of the crime and also in commensurate to the crime. These laws of God also agrees with the universal conscience of man which has been written into our hearts by God our creator (Rom. 2:14&15).Therefore no human being on earth can justify or excuse himself on the plea of ignorance to these unwritten laws in our hearts. At this juncture, let us note that God’s purpose for creating man after creating the universe and the earth was so that man can have dominion over the earth. To quote the exact words, it is stated thus in Genesis 1:26: “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our own likeness and let them have dominion… over all the earth, and every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.” One very important point to be noted here is the fact that after the creation of man, God did not talk about a “Joint rulership of God and man on earth”. On the contrary, the words used are: “and let THEM have dominion over all the earth.” A second important point to be also noted is the fact that, though man was given the dominion (Rulership) status of the whole world and all the creatures therein, he was not given any authority to rule over his fellow man (In the sense of master and slave or one country ruling over another country) Also when man was created and put in the Garden of Eden, there were
f late many articles in our local dailies have projected a gloomy picture and a bleak future in matters relating to Nagaland state as well as Naga Movement as a whole. The odds and failures/disappointments seem to have overshadowed all our past struggles and achievements. This only shows the smallness and shallowness of our thinking and convictions. Ours is not a closed and limited system of existence operating within its own internal resources only. Ours is an open world and universe created and sustained by PERSONALITY! As image-bearers we have been endowed with a conscience to work on and move on in life with purpose no problems or difficulties can daunt or dismay. Nagas should not forget that we are planted where we are with a purpose. How much and how far this can mount up or stretch out depends on factors within and without our control. must be appropriate. When truth and love rule in our hearts, we can brace up ourselves to face any situation. Each time we must muster enough courage to love our own people and our own land. We can also prepare ourselves to do the same to the people of India and Burma/Myanmar. That way we can build up a future together for peaceful coexistence and communal harmony. We cannot change history and geography, but we can change the way we exist together mutually as friendly neighbours and responsible citizens. Seeds for the common good can be sown for posterity. Seeds for moderate climate! There is nothing to fear, because we are in our Father’s world which is safe and secure for us. Rather fear the dark shadows in our minds. cal, economic and social issues of our lives on earth. In essence, God’s laws are for enforcing the rules of heaven in the affairs of man on earth. But the tragedy for many Christians is that they see only the religious colors of the Rainbow and miss out all the other colors that address the other social aspects of our lives on earth. As a result, though we Nagas are in a political mess today, many Naga Christians would not flip through the Bible to find out the political laws under which we must make our stand as one of God’s nations on earth. Now God did not give us His laws so that we can keep them hanging over our heads or keep them in abeyance for some future use in Heaven. An entire book can be written about these laws of God and how it applies to the whole of God’s creation. But in this present article, I am trying to draw the reader’s attention only to what Heaven will not do for earth in our political context in Nagaland. We must however start our reflections on this issue not by quoting a Naga political opinion but by quoting a scripture given by God for the conduct of the whole world’s earthly affairs. In this context as mentioned earlier, God never gave Adam a law that man can dominate and rule over his fellow man. It also never says that one country can invade another country and rule over it. It instead clearly states, that God himself had from one man made all the nations of the earth and had given them their respective periods and the boundaries of their habitations-Acts 17:26. With the proposed implementation of 7th ROP from January 2018, it appears that the total fund available will be consumed for salary alone if the enhancement of salary from existing 6th ROP to 7th ROP is about 35%. This would mean that total 100% will be consumed on salary alone and nothing will be left for the public. 5. If the total available fund is spend on salary alone, then there is no more necessity to have development departments as there will be no fund to do any development work and their existence would be rendered meaningless. Therefore, it is my fervent appeal on behalf of the poor public of the State to immediately stop any type of post creation for any department, let alone creation of any new department. We already have enough departments in Nagaland without work. Your prudent action on the matter will ensure progress and development of the state. Y. Moses, Dimapur
this anthropological history is clearly mentioned in Genesis Chapter 10). God also never sanctioned that an invading country can rule an occupied country with draconian laws like the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. This Indian Government act has nullified even the very right to life for so called Nagaland citizens of India. In fact such a law transgresses all the value of man as a HUMAN BEING created in the image of God. God’s laws also clearly declares that whosoever sheds man’s blood in acts of murder rape torture and burnings etc should be punished by man’s laws which are based on God’s own laws. Now therefore, to rebel against such laws as AFSPA is to be obedient to God’s laws. After all, as the scripture says: ‘To fear the Lord is to hate evil” (Prv.8:13). And yet many Naga Churches and Christians think that such laws that defy the very relationship of God and man is none of their business. Can a Christian state like ours allow such acts of lawlessness to prevail in our own country with our consent? In the end, can all that the Churches in Nagaland do is to call for clean elections only after four years of repeated lawless corruptions and wealth accumulations? Surely despite the very religious exterior, Nagaland must be one of the most hypocritical Christian states in the world- especially in the realm of politics! Rather than fighting against India’s political sins over our lands, we seem to be wallowing in those sins ever seeking our own comforts and safety zones in
this enemy occupied land of ours. Our topmost priorities seem to be to get (or even buy with money) a secure Indian Government job with accessibility to accumulation of wealth through corruption. Building mansions and buying the best cars to satiate our endless lust for the latest and fastest and strongest car models in the present global market seems to be an obsession of many parents and children in Nagaland today. Can such a people and a nation escape the wrath of God which will come through a harvest of all our years of indifference and apathy to our national struggle? With the exception of a few dedicated national workers, today, even our national struggle is swelling with so called leaders seeking their own political fortunes through the blood and tears that were shed by other patriots. In this forthcoming catastrophe, God will not intervene and stop the consequences of our piled up problems from exploding in our faces. God will not intervene because He has already given us his laws regarding our nationhood and our territories but we have not acted on them for too long. For far too long, we have only been pursuing a life of comfort and pleasure in the midst of an invasion which is war! Indeed we shall reap what we have sown for all these years of apathy and indifference to God’s political laws. H E R E H E AV E N WILL NOT DO ANYTHING FOR EARTH WITH REGARDS TO NAGAS. Kaka D. Iralu, Kohima
Reader’s Post
Sir,
Any family members who went against its parents shall destroy its family
A family is a set up of parents and children; however, if any family members totally went against the wishes of its parents, the said family will surely ruins. And accordingly, everybody and every organization including the Government know that I for one T.L Angami is the only founder and first president and Sr. Advisor of GBFN and by the grace of Almighty God I am still alive and working accordingly to the law of the land. However, the present NGBF leaders have time and again went against its founder and first president through publishing an article and even went to the extent to disown its founder president GBFN as well as the most senior advisor. The present NGBF office bears should know that there is a NGBF in Nagaland and for which there is an advisor from the Government as for GBs and DBs. However, the GBFN is founded by T.L Angami and I am still alive looking after the welfare and betterment of the federation in every important issues. Further to make it clear that I am not the advisor of GBs and DBs where as the functionaries of GBs and DBs are quite different. GBs are the real leaders at grassroots level and the custodian of Naga customary law. The GBFN of Nagaland is not salaried persons so we do not require any advisor from the government. In this regard, whatever I take care about the NGBF or GBFN is final and sufficient. And as such, any family members from GBFN who always went against the founder and Sr. advisor or its parents is illegal. And if it goes on like this, no government will respect the existence of the GBFN and ultimately such action will destroy the whole family. T.L Angami, Founder and First President, GBFN, Hq. ENSUB notifies Eastern Naga students
DIMAPUR: The Eastern Naga Student’ Union Bangalore (ENSUB) has informed all the Eastern Nagas coming to Bangalore in search of job/studies to register their names with the union. A press note by ENSUB president Chinglang Konyak and secretary Himloi Phom stated students and union both faced problems because students get into the wrong kind of job or wrong placement. It stated that in most cases, union would be called upon by parents and relative only when one lands up in trouble. The union in such situations suffers because the student did not inform or enroll themselves with the union. Therefore union had no clue about his/her whereabouts. The union stated that this information was not just for eastern Nagas but to all the Nagas in general and to kindly stay attached with their respective unions in Bangalore or any other cities in India. The union also appealed to the parents, churches, unions and various Naga Hohos and associations to inform citizens to take the decision of moving out to cities with a conscious state of mind and proper consultations.

Many blue-collar workers helped propel him to his unexpected election victory on Nov. 8 and Trump is under pressure to deliver for them. The Republican president tweeted last week that the United States could no longer tolerate massive trade deficits and job losses and that his meeting with Xi “will be a very difficult one.” On Friday, the unpredictable Trump not only set a different tone but also avoided any public lapses in protocol that Chinese officials had feared could embarrass their leader. “We have made tremendous progress in our
Gorsuch confirmed to US Supreme Court
WASHINGTON, APR 8 (AGENCIES): The US Senate confirmed Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court Friday, culminating a 13-month fight over the vacancy and rewarding President Donald Trump by bringing a conservative tilt back to the bench. The federal judge from Colorado crossed the finish line in a 54-45 vote, one day after Trump’s Republicans controversially changed Senate rules to circumvent a Democratic blockade of his nomination. “Today is a new day,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said ahead of the vote, seeking to put a positive stamp on what has been a contentious congressional process for the new Republican administration. Gorsuch is “going to make an incredible addition to the court,” McConnell said. “He’s going to make the American people proud.” The White House said Gorsuch — the youngest nominee in a generation — will be sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts on Monday at 9am (1300

The 49-year-old judge has been hailed by Republicans as a worthy successor to towering conservative justice Antonia Scalia, who died in February 2016 as the presidential race was

gaining steam. The nine-justice court has had one seat vacant for more than a year amid the ensuing political battle, with Democrats and Republicans trading bitter accusations of blame. Gorsuch’s ability to write incisive rulings and his defence of a strict reading of the Constitution have fuelled comparisons with Scalia. But Gorsuch was staunchly opposed by opposition Democrats, angry that Republicans refused to grant a hearing to thenpresident Barack Obama’s pick to replace Scalia, Merrick Garland. McConnell argued that since it was an election year, the next president should pick the nominee.
Ousted South Korean President questioned in jail SEOUL, APR 8 (IANS): South Korean prosecutors on Saturday grilled ousted President Park Geun-hye at a detention centre again over corruption allegations that removed her from office last month. Prosecutors visited the centre in Uiwang, where Park has been detained following the Constitutional Court’s approval of her impeachment on March 10, Yonhap News Agency reported. Park is known to have denied any wrongdoing during the first session in prison that lasted for nearly 11 hours on Tuesday. The second probe occurred two days later. Park was named an accomplice in her longtime friend Choi Soon-sil’s bribery allegations involving South Korea’s largest business group Samsung. She is also suspected of colluding with Choi in pressing local conglomerates into donating tens of billions of won to two nonprofit foundations allegedly controlled by Choi. WASHINGTON, APR 8 (IANS): After the US fired 59 Tomahawk missiles on a Syrian airbase killing several people, US envoy to the UN Nikki Haley has defended the action while sharply criticising Russia for allowing Syria’s leader to stockpile chemical weapons. In her remarks at a special UN session after the strike on the Shairat airbase, Haley on Friday warned the US was “prepared to do more” in response to Syria’s use of chemical weapons that killed many civilians. The meeting took place as the US and allies press for a resolution condemning the Assad regime for the bombing. Russia is likely to veto the resolution. Haley delivered a sharp rebuke to Russia for its support to Syria, saying President Bashar al Assad regime was “playing Russians for fools... telling

PARIS, APR 8 (AGENCIES): Skirmishes broke out on Saturday ahead of a campaign rally by French far-right leader Marine Le Pen, prompting the removal of more than a dozen protesters and the evacuation of the hall in Ajaccio, Corsica. Latest polls ahead of the April-May French presidential election show the race tightening, with Le Pen - leader of the anti-immigrant National Front - neckand-neck with centrist Emmanuel Macron, who is expected to beat her in the runoff. Around 50 people demonstrated in front of the venue in Ajaccio, chanting
the inquiry Saturday, as he did previously. On Friday, a Seoul court has approved prosecutors’ request to extend Park’s detention until April 19 for further questioning. The Justice Ministry transferred Choi, who was held at the same location as Park, to another detention house earlier following the prosecution’s request. Meanwhile, prosecutors are considering seeking an arrest warrant against Woo Byung-woo, Park’s former senior secretary for civil affairs, according to sources. He is one of the last figures embroiled in the scandal that has avoided detention so far, while a number of Park’s former aides were arrested and are standing trial. Woo was interrogated on Thursday for about 17 hours as a suspect. A team of special prosecutors which earlier investigated the scandal asked a court to issue a warrant to arrest Woo, but the request was denied.

STOCKHOLM, APR 8 (AP): Swedish police said today that they believe they have arrested the driver of a hijacked beer truck which killed four people and injured 15 others on a busy street in the Swedish capital. “Yes, it is correct, it is likely him,” police spokesman Lars Bystrom told The Associated Press. He declined to comment on Swedish media reports that the suspect was a 39-yearold man from Uzbekistan. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for yesterday’s attack. Earlier, prosecutor Hans Ihrman said a person had been formally identified as a suspect “of terrorist offenses by murder,” and should face a pre-trial custody hearing before midday Tuesday or be released. Bystrom would not confirm or deny media reports that police had found a bag containing explosives in the truck. “We do not comment on what we have seized,” he said. At US-China summit, Trump presses Xi on trade, N Korea
PALM BEACH, APR 8 (agencies): US President Donald Trump pressed Chinese President Xi Jinping to do more to curb North Korea’s nuclear program and help reduce the gaping U.S. trade deficit with Beijing in talks on Friday, even as he toned down the strident anti-China rhetoric of his election campaign. Trump spoke publicly of progress on a range of issues in his first U.S.-China summit – as did several of his top aides – but they provided few concrete specifics other than China’s agreement to work together to narrow disagreements and find common ground for cooperation. As the two leaders wrapped up a Florida summit overshadowed by U.S. missile strikes in Syria overnight, Xi joined Trump in stressing the positive mood of the meetings while papering over deep differences that have caused friction between the world’s two biggest economies. Trump’s aides insisted he had made good on his pledge to raise concerns about China’s trade practices and said there was some headway, with Xi agreeing

They were inducted alongside the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), Journey and Yes during a concert in New York. However, it was not just a celebration: a number of artists chose to use the occasion to make impassioned pleas and remember lost friends. Tupac’s award was collected by his friend, fellow rapper Snoop Dogg. Folk singer Baez - as known for her activism as her singing - made a rallying call for resistance in the face of “the new political cultural reality”. The 76-year-old, who

Graham brought up the famous introduction Freeman read in Shawshank to introduce the newest prisoner Andy (played by Tim Robbins) as he arrived to the penitentiary. On the talk show, however, Freeman’s monologue featured a few emendations on the original script – namely taking shots at the show’s host. “I must admit I didn’t think much of Graham Norton first time I laid eyes on him,” Freeman began. “He looked like a stiff breeze could blow him over”.

Younis Khan to retire after West Indies Tests
Younis Khan
Karachi, Apr 8 (PTI): Long-ser ving Pakistan batsman and former captain Younis Khan today announced he will retire from international cricket after the upcoming Test series in the West Indies. “I will be retiring... with my head held high,” the 39-year-old said at a press conference here. “I think this is the right time as every sportsman has to take this decision in his career,” he added, bringing an end to a 17-year Test career. Younis, who has led Pakistan in all three formats and guided them to their only World Twenty20 title in England in 2009, needs only 23 runs to reach 10,000 Test runs. Younis, thus, joined teammate Misbahul-Haq in retiring from international cricket at the end of the tour of the West Indies in April and May. Younis has so far scored
34 Test centuries in 115 matches -- the most by any batsman from the country -and is set to become the first Pakistani and 13th batsman in the world to score 10,000 or more runs. He has so far accumulated 9977 runs at an average of 53.06. India’s Sachin Tendulkar currently tops the charts with 15,921 runs in 200 matches. “People are calling me and asking me not to make any announcement to leave but now is the time,” Younis said. He added, “A time comes in every player’s life when he has to decide and I always tried my best to serve my country with my head high. No player always remains fit, the motivation never remains the same, so this is the time when Younis should leave the field after the upcoming series in West Indies.” His best Test score 313 against Sri Lanka in 2009 – is the third highest for Pakistan, after Hanif Mohammad’s 337 and Inzamam-ul-Haq’s 329. He was recently named one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year, following his contribution in Pakistan’s 2-2 drawn series in England last summer. “I was planning this for few months,” he said of his decision to quit, adding, “I always tried to play for my team and for my country.”

FIFA losses hit $369 million in 2016 Zurich, Apr 8 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : F I FA finances showed a loss of $369 million last year as American and Swiss corruption investigations added legal costs to the soccer body’s budget and scared off sponsors. An even bigger loss is expected next year, FIFA said Friday after publishing its 2016 accounts, which r e f l e c t a n ew way o f reporting income. F I FA e x p e c t s t o rebound with $1 billion in profit in the accounts for 2018, which will include income from most TV broadcast deals for the World Cup in Russia. Still, the scandal-hit soccer body’s confidence will be tested with 24 slots currently unsold in a 34-
sponsor program for a World Cup that kicks off in only 14 months. FIFA’s costs in 2016 included legal bills of more than $50 million for the American and Swiss federal investigations of bribery and mismanagement linked to international soccer leaders. That legal bill rose from $20.2 million in 2015. FIFA is sticking to its revenue target of $5.56 billion mostly from World Cup TV and sponsorship deals for the four-year financial cycle tied to the tournament in Russia. Using the new financial reporting standards, FIFA’s reported loss of $122 million in 2015 would have been recalibrated to a $52 million deficit. That suggests FIFA’s loss in 2016 would have
easily exceeded $200 million under the old methods of booking contracted income. FIFA has budgeted to earn almost $4 billion income in 2018 alone and end next year with record reserves of $1.655 billion. However, the reserve fund is now down to $1.048 billion and should fall to $605 million in a year before the bounce back FIFA is relying on. Its cash reserves have been above $1 billion since 2008. The 2016 accounts covered the first 10 months under FIFA President Gianni Infantino since he succeeded the disgraced Sepp Blatter. FIFA booked $502
million in income with zero reported from European broadcast rights deals that are now backloaded to 2018 and had reported expenses of $893 million. The spending rises were in part to fulfil Infantino’s campaign promises last year of increased grants to national, regional and continental soccer bodies worldwide. FIFA’s 211 member federations are now entitled to $5 million from each World Cup. FIFA also spent $7.9 million on the February meeting in Zurich to elect Infantino, and there was a $5.6 million increase in payments to FIFA Council members.

Maxwell fires Kings XI to easy victory over Pune
Kings XI Punjab captain Glenn Maxwell hits over the top for six during their IPL match against Rising Pune Supergiant.
Indore, Apr 8 (PTI): Captain Glenn Maxwell led from the front with a quickfire knock to fashion a six-wicket win for Kings XI Punjab in their Indian Premier League opener against Rising Pune Supergiant here today. Maxwell made short work of the 164-run target by blasting 44 off just 20 balls as Kings XI cruised to victory with six balls to spare. His unbeaten 79-run stand with David Miller (30 off 27) took the game away from the opposition in front of a packed Holkar Stadium. Maxwell’s fireworks
came after Ben Stokes led Rising Pune Supergiant’s recovery with a blistering 50 off 32 balls, helping his team post 163 for six. With the win, Kings XI have begun the competition on a promising note after finishing at the bottom in the previous two editions. With Kings XI 73 for two in 10 overs and needing another 91 for victor y, the match was hanging in balance. Then Maxwell came and ran away with the match with some brutal hitting. The Australian, made captain of the side ahead of established names like Eoin
Morgan, hammered four sixes and as many fours to begin his IPL campaign in style. Miller was mostly a spectator in this matchwinning stand with Maxwell, who punished spinners as much as the pacers. The Australian even did not spare Pune’s most impressive bowler Imran Tahir, hitting him for consecutive sixes in the 16th over that virtually sealed the match in Kings XI’s favour. Earlier, after the fall of the top order that left Pune at 49 for three in the ninth over, Stokes showed why he commanded a Rs 14.5 crore
price at the auction. He got good support from Manoj Tiwary (40 off 23). Tiwary and Daniel Christian, who both remained unbeaten, took Mohit and Sandeep Sharma to the cleaners at the end of the innings, collecting 30 off the last 12 balls. It was a memorable IPL debut for Tamil Nadu pacer T Natarajan, who took just two balls to strike, having the seasoned Ajinkya Rahane (19) holed out at deep cover. The onus was on inform captain Steven Smith (26) to bail his team out of trouble. He hung around for a while before he mistimed one to be caught at deep square leg. Soon another experienced batsman, M S Dhoni, departed and Pune were down to 71 for four in the 12th over. Stokes was joined by Tiwary and together they scored 61 off 37 balls to set up a competitive total. Christian hammered Sandeep for couple of fours and a maximum in the 20th over to push the score beyond 150. First indications were that the injury was not too bad and that Rafinha would be available in around 15 days, but an arthroscope showed on Friday that he has suffered more serious damage to his meniscus ligament than first thought and that he will need an operation. It is the second knee injury the 24-year-old has
suffered in his career, as he missed out on virtually all of the 2015-16 campaign after an injury in a Champions League game against Roma. However, this season the Brazilian had been ver y impor tant to the Barca cause, playing a total of 2,650 minutes in all competitions and scoring six goals in the Liga Santander.
NEW DELHI, Apr 8 ( P T I ) : I n d i a n b ox e r K Shyam Kumar (49kg) clinched a gold medal at the Thailand International Tournament in Bangkok without even stepping inside the ring for his summit clash on Saturday. Shyam, who won a gold at the 2015 edition of the event, was to take on Olympic champion Hasanboy Dusmatov of Uzbekistan in the final. However, Dusmatov pulled out of the bout owing to an injury, giving the Indian his second gold medal at the event. Earlier, Rohit Tokas (64kg) had lost in the semifinals to settle for bronze medal. Incidentally, Rohit had won a bronze medal in the 2015 edition as well. India thus finished the tournament with two medals. IOA grants affiliation to Boxing Federation of India
New Delhi, Apr 8 (PTI): The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has granted affiliation to the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), ending a longstanding impasse between the two bodies. “As per the directives of the International Olympic Committee vide their letter dated February 7, the IOA grants affiliation to the BFI subject to ratification by the Executive Council/ General Body of the IOA,” the IOA stated in a letter to BFI President Ajay Singh. The affiliation ends a logjam that goes back to September last year when BFI took charge of the sport after elections conducted in the presence of International Boxing Association (AIBA) and Sports Ministry observers. The IOA had initially refused to grant recognition to BFI stating that it still considered the now-defunct Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) as the official national body for the sport. It had eventually referred the matter to its affiliation committee after persistent requests from the BFI. With this, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) now becomes the fully recognised body for Indian boxing, having already been granted affiliation by AIBA and the Sports Ministry.

Bengaluru, Apr 8 (Agencies): Rohan Bopanna and Sriram Balaji won the doubles rubber in straight sets to give India a 3-0 victory over Uzbekistan in the Davis Cup Asia/ Oceania Group I secondround tie in Bengaluru on Saturday. The win gives India a place in the World Group playoffs. After Ramkumar Ramanathan and Prajnesh Gunneswaran won their respective singles rubbers to give India a 2-0 lead on Friday, Bopanna and Balaji, who made his Davis Cup debut in the rubber, took one hour, 23 minutes to defeat Farrukh Dustov and Sanjar Fayziev 6-2, 6-4, 6-1, giving Mahesh Bhupathi a win in his debut tie as India’s non-playing captain. Bopanna/ Balaji dominated the set, winning 28 points to their opponents’ 17. Serving to stay in the set down 4-5, 15-30 in the second, Dustov/Fayziev threw in a double fault to give the Indians two set points. Bopanna converted
the first of those with a succession of forehands that drew a netted volley from Dustov. The Indians were in total control by then, and broke the Uzbeks twice and won six consecutive games, including the last game of the second set, to go up 5-0 in the third before Dustov/ Fayziev finally held serve. Bopanna then held serve at love to seal a comfortable victory.

Record-setting WI beat Pakistan in 1st ODI G u ya na , A p r 8 ( A g e n c i e s ) : Ja s o n Mohammed played the finest innings of his brief inter national career to pace the West Indies to an historic four-wicket victory over Pakistan in the opening one-day international at the National Stadium in Guyana on Friday. Set a daunting target after the visitors rattled up a formidable 308 for five batting first, Mohammed’s blistering unbeaten 91 off just 58 deliveries, aided by an explosive cameo at the end from Ashley Nurse (34 off 15 balls), saw the home side successfully chasing a target of 300 or more in an ODI for the first time ever following 31 previous failed attempts over a 44-year period. Wi t h t h a t we i g h t of history against them, Pakistan looked to have put the West Indies out of the match on a relaid pitch that encouraged attacking strokeplay. Mohammed Hafeez led the tourists’ batting effort with a top score of 88 to temporarily quell the rising tide of criticism at

Opening batsman Ahmed Shehzad benefited from an early slice of luck to get to 67 while Shoaib Malik, who also capitalised on continuing errant outcricket by the West Indies, flailed away for 53 off 38 deliveries as Pakistan equalled their secondhighest total against these opponents in the 50-over format of the game. Nurse enjoyed success amid the car nage, the off-spinning all-rounder finishing with his best ODI

West Indies’ chase started badly with the early loss of Chadwick Walton to Mohammad Amir but left-handers Evin Lewis (47) and Kieran Powell (61) kept their team in with an outside chance even if their comparatively pedestrian progress meant the required run-rate was climbing all the time. Pakistan are currently eighth with the West Indies in ninth spot.
Son shines as high-flying Spurs hammer Watford 4-0
Lo n d o n, A p r 8 (Agencies): Tottenham kept up the pressure on Premier League leaders Chelsea as they swept past Watford 4-0 at White Hart Lane on Saturday. Dele Alli opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with a superb long-range effort, and the goal was
quickly followed up by strikes from Eric Dier and Heung-Min Son before halftime. Son volleyed in the fourth early in the second half and Spurs cruised to victory with Harry Kane hitting the bar from a late free-kick after playing the final 30 minutes on his
return from injury. The win, which moves Spurs four points behind Chelsea - for a few hours at least - is their 11th in a row at home in the Premier League and sixth on the spin in the league. They did it without top scorer Kane in the starting XI, as he returned from a one-month
minute, with Alli cutting in from the left and firing a superb shot into the far corner. Dier doubled the advantage shortly afterwards, finishing from just inside the area after Son’s cross was blocked. Watford looked deflated after the quickfire double and they fell further behind before half-time as Son fired into the bottom corner from outside the box. Son then made it 4-0 in the 55th minute, finishing on the volley at the back post from Trippier’s cross. Kane was introduced on the hour mark in place of Janssen and went close to scoring when he took the ball round Heurelho Gomes but could not finish from a tight angle. Son missed another opportunity for his hat-trick when he shot against the bar, before Kane smacked the woodwork from a free-kick as Spurs eased to victory.

Injur y-hit Watford made several changes from their midweek win over West Brom, with Troy Deeney a substitute and Daryl Janmaat and Adrian Mariappa starting in a second-string defence. But despite their absences, Watford made a positive enough start, even if Spurs did go close as Son’s deflected shot hit the post and Vincent Janssen saw an effort well saved. After M’Baye Niang shot at Lloris and Craig Cathcart dragged an effort into the side-netting, Janssen should have put Spurs ahead when he turned a cross on to the crossbar from close range. Christian Eriksen then fired over as Spurs started to turn up the pressure. The opener arrived in some style in the 33rd
