culture and traditions.” Earlier, inaugurating the Konyak Union office building, the chief minister said Konyak Nagas, being one the biggest tribes among Naga tribes, should work for the unity of the Nagas. Liquor ban on highways: States divided on political lines

NEW DELHI, APR 4 (AGENCIES): The states which have or have not sought a relook at the Supreme Court’s verdict banning liquor vends within 500 metres of national and state highways, seem to be divided on political lines, even (Cont’d on p-8) as the Centre has “unequivocally” supported the order. The apex court order passed last week also recorded that eight states, which are ruled by parties other than the BJP, had rushed to it for modification of the December 15, 2016 verdict. The states which had approached the apex court for modification of its verdict were Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Sikkim, Telangana, Meghalaya and Andhra Pradesh. Besides, the union territory of Puducherry has also sought changes in the “Look Mom, as a nature judgement. lover I respect its lawLater, Andhra Pradesh don’t fight it.” withdrew its application

saying the state government has accepted the last year’s judgement. Eighteen states have preferred not to file any application against the verdict. While the Centre through senior advocates Ajit Kumar Sinha and A K Panda had “unequivocally asserted that the union government stands by the judgment rendered by this court on December 15, 2016”, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, who appeared for Tamil Nadu government, had assailed the directives for doing away with vends along 500 metre radius of national and state highways. “The judgment rendered by this court has transgressed the limitations on the constitutional power conferred by Article 142,” Rohatgi had said. Various contentions for modification of the order raised by the Attorney General were not agreed to

by a bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar which said that “the error, in the submission of the Attorney General, lies in comparing national and state highways”. “Moreover, it is urged that even if the prohibition were to apply to both national and state highways, an exemption ought to be provided for the location of liquor shops in municipal areas through which the state highways traverse. “Alternately, it was urged that a smaller prohibition in terms of distance would be appropriate in relation to state highways. The Attorney General has confined his submission to the state highways only,” the bench noted. While expressing disagreement with the state governments’ contentions, the bench said, “The state excise rules contain enabling provisions. They pro-

vide for a discretion for the grant of liquor licences. No individual has a vested right to obtain a licence”. “There is no fundamental right to carry on business in liquor since as a matter of constitutional doctrine, Article 19(1)(g) does not extend to trade in liquor....,” the bench, also comprising Justices D Y Chandrachud and L N Rao, said. The apex court on March 31 had partially modified its December 15, 2016 verdict by exempting hill states of Sikkim, Meghalaya and Himachal Pradesh and areas having a population of up to 20,000. During the arguments before the apex court, the Madhya Pradesh government had filed an affidavit saying the verdict “has been accepted by the state government, following a resolution by the council of ministers on January 16, 2017”. India hits out at China for objecting Dalai Lama’s visit to Arunachal

Dalai Lama arrives at Bomdila in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday. (PTI) New Delhi, Apr 4 (PTI): India today hit out at China over its objection to the Dalai Lama’s trip to Arunachal Pradesh, saying no “artificial controversy” should be created around the visit and asked Beijing not to interfere in its internal affairs. China has kept a close watch ahead of the Dalai Lama’s visit, starting today, and the Chinese Foreign Ministry had warned India against the visit of the Tibetan spiritual leader to Arunachal Pradesh, which

Beijing claims as part of Tibet, saying it will cause “serious damage” to bilateral ties. However, unfazed by the Chinese warning, India asserted, “No additional colour should be ascribed to his religious and spiritual activities and visits to various states of India.” It also reiterated the government’s position that the Dalai Lama is a revered religious leader who is deeply respected by the Indian people. The government, there-

fore, urges that no “artificial controversy” should be created around his present visit to Arunachal Pradesh, the external affairs ministry said in a press release. Reacting sharply, Minister of State for Home Kiran Rijiju asked China not to interfere in India’s internal affairs and asserted that New Delhi respects the “One-China” policy and expects Beijing to reciprocate. He said, “There is no political angle behind His Holiness’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh. It is completely religious. Arunachal Pradesh is an inseparable part of India and China should not object to his visit and interfere in India’s internal affairs.” India has never interfered in China’s internal affairs and it expect China to reciprocate, the minister told reporters. The minister, who hails from Arunachal Pradesh, said the border state is “not a disputed territory” and is part of the Union of India and is a “full-fledged state”. “There may be some differences of opinion between India and China over the boundary. But China has no locus standi over Arunachal Pradesh,” he said. Rijiju said talks between New Delhi and Beijing on the boundary dispute are going on and the people

of Arunachal Pradesh are expecting that the issue will be soon resolved. “I appeal to China not to rake up the Arunachal Pradesh issue unnecessarily as status of the state can’t be questioned,” he said. During his visit to the northeastern state, the Dalai Lama will hold religious discourse with devotees in Tawang, Bomdila and other areas. Rijiju said the Dalai Lama is visiting Arunachal Pradesh at the invitation of the people of the state and will confine himself to only religious discourse and he will not make any political statement. The Arunachal Pradesh government has accorded state guest honour to the Dalai Lama and is making arrangements for his stay there, Rijiju said, adding the Tibetan spiritual leader will also visit his (Rijiju’s) village in West Kameng district where he will inaugurate a Buddhist monastery. The Dalai Lama had last visited Arunachal Pradesh in November 2009. He said the people of Arunachal Pradesh want good neighbourly relations with China and want reopening of trading points along the McMahon Line which have been closed since 1962.

Stop persuading people to mine uranium: KSU Correspondent

Shillong, Apr 4: Meghalaya’s powerful Khasi Student’s Union (KSU) on Tuesday asked the central government and the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) to stop persuading the people to allow them to mine uranium in the state. “They (government authorities) have already known that there has been a strong opposition against uranium mining, but they keep persuading the people,” KSU supremo, Lambokstarwell Marngar said addressing the gathering while observing April 4 as “Sngi Kyrsiew Ri” or Khasi National Awakening Day. The Khasi National Awakening Day is observed across Khasi-Jaintia hills to commemorate the day freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem waged a war in 1829 against the British. “Therefore, if violence breaks out in the state because of this (Uranium) issue, the Centre, state government and UCIL and Atomic Minerals Directorate will be held responsible,” Marngar warned. Observing the awakening day under the theme “say no to uranium mining”, thousand of KSU activists marched took out a protest march to AMD office here, voicing out their vociferous opposition against the Central government’s plan to extract uranium deposits from South West Khasi Hills

district. The activists also burnt down two effigies of AMD and UCIL as mark of protest. “For the past 27 years, the UCIL has been making attempt to mine uranium in Meghalaya, but they have failed to achieved their plan as the people are against the mining of this highly radioactive mineral which will annihilate the indigenous people of the state,” North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) chairman, Samuel B. Jyrwa said. “Had we not agitated since that time, we do not know what will happen now. They have used all sorts of tactics to convince the people. Now they should realise that uranium is a forgotten issue,” Jyrwa said. He also recalled how the indigenous people at Jadugoda in Jharkhand have suffered due to the ill-effects of uranium mining. Last month, a team of UCIL officials led by their Chairman and Managing Director, C.K. Asnani held a closed-door meeting with five anti-mining groups seeking their views and opinions on Kylleng Pyndengsohiong Mawthabah (KPM) uranium mining project that has been stalled for over two decades. However, the leaders of the various groups, including the KSU asked the UCIL officials to scrap the proposal to mine uranium in Meghalaya and we will not allow anyone to mine this radioactive mineral in Meghalaya

(PTI) Guwahat i , A p r 4 (PTI): Union Minister of Roads, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari Tuesday reviewed the progress of works related to several national highways and construction of the Brahmaputra Express Highway. The Union Minister, during a meeting with Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and several other state ministers and officials, said 1,253 km of state roads would be converted into national highways. Already the Centre has approved conversion of 2,000 km of state roads into national highways and Detail Project Reports of 23 projects have been completed, Gadkari said.

The existing Guwahati bypass from Khanapara to Jalukbari would be converted into a six lane highway and five logistic parks alongside national highways where land is available, would be constructed to shift godowns to ease congestion in important city and town areas, an official release said. The Union Minister advised the state government to overhaul the functioning of the Public Works Department to bring in more transparency, it said. Responding to a request by Chief Minister Sonowal to provide necessary support for building quality houses and developing the skill of contractors, Gadkari advised the state

government to liaise with the civil engineering department of IIT-Guwahati for utilising their expertise in this regard, the release said. Ag artala , A p r 4 (IANS): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has to confront many unique challenges in laying tracks in the mountainous northeastern region due to its topography and the danger of natural calamities, a top official has said. According to Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) Shailesh Kumar Pathak, the NFR gets to work at optimum pace for only four to five months a year as the region witnesses intense rain from March to end-October with the actual monsoon running from June to September. “As the Himalayan region, specially the northeastern states, are siltation- and landslide-prone areas, the railways have to take additional measures to deal the natural adversities. A lesser working period makes the task more challenging for railway engineers and others,” Pathak told IANS while on a visit here. He said the per-kilometre cost of laying singleline tracks in the mainland states is Rs 7 crore and for double line tracks Rs 10 crore. “These costs are much higher in the northeastern region due to terrain,

The governor, however, reminded that one should be aware of what kind of education one should give to a girl child. “It is time to go out and explore the world to know the life of the people living in other parts of the world. With Sabroom just 75 km from the Chittagong seaport in southern Bangladesh, the Rs 1,150 crore project, to be completed by 2019, will enable the ferrying of men and material from and to the landlocked northeastern states. An NFR engineer said that due to the large number of rivulets and small rivers, manysmall, medium and big bridges, besides many tunnels, have to be built in the northeastern region. He noted in this context that India’s longest 11.55 km rail tunnel is now under construction as part of the 111-km-long JiribamTupul-Imphal line that ends in the Manipur capital. This is longer than the the 11.2 km Pir Panjal tunnel on the Banihal-Qazigund line in Jammu and Kashmir. Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain has said there are ambitious plans to connect, by 2020, all the eight capitals of the northeastern states.

EC refutes Kejriwal’s EVMs allegations

AAP workers protesting against EMVs alleging it was rigged. servations and allegations have been made by a leader of a political party today in a press conference regarding the use of EVMs... The Commission would like to clarify the legal position. The EVMs comprising the Control Unit (CU) and Ballot Unit (BU) used in any election shall be kept in a strong room after declaration of results and shall not be accessed by anyone till the period of filing of election petition is over. The election petition has to be filed within 45 days. However, in case of VVPAT machines, the printed paper slips have to be retrieved at the time of counting and sealed in a paper envelope and only these sealed paper slips have to be kept inside

the strong room along with the EVMs,” it said in a press note. The poll watchdog said VVPAT machines were not required by law to be retained in the strong room for purpose of election petitions, and redeploying them for subsequent polls was as per existing policy of EC, since it had only 53,500 VVPAT machines. Still, it added, EC had taken care to redeploy only the VVPAT machines that were kept in reserve and not used during the actual poll in UP, in MP and other states having bye-polls. It clarified that none of the EVMs used in UP poll had been redeployed for Madhya Pradesh bye-poll; rather, only ‘reserve’ VVPAT machines, for which the 45-day restriction does not apply and which were never used for actual poll in UP, were allocated. “Certain baseless ob-

Modi charged Lalu Prasad’s Minister-son Tej Pratap Yadav of giving contract of Rs 90 lakh for earth filling work in Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park located in the state capital. Yadav’s department, under whose jurisdiction the Park falls, gave away the contract of Rs 90 lakh to a company without following the tender process for construction of a pathway and beautification work in the park, Mr. Modi alleged. “The entire episode smacks of misappropriation of public money... Panaji, Apr 4 (IANS): The electronic voting machines (EVMs) used in the February 4 Goa assembly elections could have been tampered with, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s Goa Convenor Elvis Gomes alleged on Tuesday. Addressing a press conference in Panaji, Gomes, whose party failed to win a single seat in the polls, said that the AAP candidates had complained to him about the possibility of EVMs being rigged. “Having now noticed that this (EVMs) can be tampered with and this has been taken very seriously by our party, I can say at this point that it could have been tampered,” Gomes said when asked if he believed that the EVMs used for polling in the state assembly elections were rigged. Gomes, whose party has alleged tampering of EVMs even in the Punjab polls, also said that four to five of its party’s candidates had complained to him about the possibility of rigged polling machines in Goa. In Goa, the AAP contested 39 out of the 40 state assembly seats but failed to win even a single seat.

MP bye-polls were sourced, EC put out an exhaustive list detailing the states from where each of the VVPAT machine was shifted for bye-polls across 10 states. As many as 830 VVPATs were brought in from UP for the Ater and Bandhavgarh byepoll. In fact, the machines from UP were redeployed in 7 other states as well. Responding to “aspersions” cast on it that EVMs from UP were moved to Bhind, Madhya Pradesh, EC said the allegations were made without verifying the facts. “No EVMs have been moved from Uttar Pradesh for the purpose of bye-poll in Madhya Pradesh,” it said. EC further clarified that EVMs and VVPAT machines kept in reserve are also put through stringent first level checking, randomisation and loading of symbols. “Hence the VVPATs that were sent to Bhind had the previous symbols loaded from UP. This is standard protocol and there is nothing amiss in this,” it stated. The old symbols are erased only during firstlevel checking before the next poll. “However, it was not done when the demonstration was made on March 31, 2017 at Bhind,” EC said adding that action had been taken against the district election officer for the lapse.

NDA government plans ‘report card’ on 3 years in office NEW DELHI, APR 4 (AGENCIES): The BJP-led NDA government plans to come out with narratives to counter political allegations on its various policies as it prepares a ‘report card’ on the eve of its third anniversary next month. “The government will present a three-year report card to the people on the eve of its anniversary. Taking note of the criticism, it will also come out with counter narratives,” a source said. The ‘report card’ will highlight various achievements of the government during the last three years and will consist of counter points to tear off the political allegations, the source added. The report card will consist of “facts, figures, data and statistics” on various policies of the government. The rationale behind the move is to effectively communicate with the people on the positive changes as well as to dispel the alleged misinformation that is tarnishing the government’s image, the source said. Each ministry has been assigned specific sectoral topics to prepare a note on them. The opposition parties have accused the Centre of not generating enough employment and for alleged inconsistent performance in core economic sectors.

We are not interested in breaking and destabilise other political parties. After our victory in four states in the recently concluded assembly elections and stupendous performance in Zila Parishad polls, leaders from other parties want to join the BJP,” Oram told media persons here. He said leaders from other parties, including

Jual Oram members of Parliament and assemblies, and former members of Parliament, are in touch with the BJP. However, the senior BJP leader’s statement was pooh-poohed by the Congress and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD). They said none from their parties would join the BJP. “The statement of the Union Minister is a mere media fiction, which has no basis. He is trying to appeal, through media, to the leaders of other parties to join the BJP. But, no one from our party is joining the BJP,” said BJD spokesperson Pratap Deb.

Yogi fulfils poll promise for UP farmers NEW DELHI, APR 4 (AGENCIES): In a big relief to farmers of Uttar Pradesh, the Adityanath government on Tuesday decided to waive off the loan of small and marginal farmers in the state. The government said that 26 illegal slaughterhouses had been shut so far.

Gurugram to have new railway terminal

Rohtak, Apr 4 (IANS): Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu on Tuesday said a new railway terminal, equipped with world-class facilities, would be set up in Gurugram to reduce mounting pressure on Delhi due to an increase in number of

trains coming to it from different parts of the country. Work on this project would soon be started, Prabhu said in this Haryana town, 70 km from New Delhi. Addressing a function organised by Northern Rail-

ways here to dedicate a newly-electrified rail section between Rohtak and Jind, the minister said that the Rohtak railway station would be developed as a model station in publicprivate-partnership (PPP) mode.

India snubs US offer to de-escalate tensions with Pak

Nagaland Post Vol. XXVII NO. 119 Dimapur, Wednesday, April 5, 2017

I

Much ado

t may not result in any change as far as the expectations of the public go and irrespective of what those who have highlighted the issue with ultimatums may have decided on the issue but certainly ‘over excess’ appointments through irregular or backdoor appointments is not only a monumental scam but a terrible injustice on thousands of deserving candidates. Their lifetime opportunity has been effectively closed by their own government through the illegal actions of ministers, politicians and bureaucrats. It may be recalled, that in November 2015, the Kyong Students Union (KSU) claimed there were a total of 7737 backdoor appointments from 2005-15 in the home department. On the other hand, the Chakhesang Students Union (CSU) stated from 2010 to 2015, there were 3900 backdoor appointments. The total figure of 7737 backdoor appointees also reveal, that on an average, there were around 774 backdoor appointees from 200515 which also means, that there were around 64 persons appointed through backdoor every month during the entire period. If there were 7737 persons who were appointed to the police department under home department through backdoor from 2010 to 2015; then certainly the number would have risen from 2015 to 2017, an issue that was raised in the recent assembly session by BJP legislator Mmhonlumo Kikon?. To drive another nail on the coffin of this scam, then Nagaland Police IGP and now CG Home Guards and Civil Defence, Toshitsungba Aier in 2015 grabbed headlines. Toshitsungba Aier IPS, had disclosed that there was an excess of around 1500 police personnel in the department, which caused an extra burden of Rs.50 crore. Further, the figure he quoted, at the NPSA annual conference at Chumukedima on November 26, 2015 was that 23% of the state’s Non-Plan budget was spent on 26,000 police personnel. It may be mentioned that the state has the highest ration of 1:50 as against the national average of 1:500. Needless to say, the bold and forthright statement wasn’t like, quite obviously by the minister and senior officials and for which he was shunted out. The other department where backdoor appointments continued was the school education department where more than 3000 were appointed through irregular and fraudulent means. Even after much anger among public after “backdoor appointments” some departments have continued with the practice as recently widely publicised in the local media. In addition, thousands of crore rupees for centrally sponsored schemes have poured into Nagaland but the big question is-which segment have actually gained? In another instance, Nagaland Voluntary Consumers Organisation had obtained a reply to RTI which revealed that there were in total 804 appointments in the Health & Family Welfare department of which 319 were backdoor appointments. In the June 5, 2016 press statement, NVCO also reminded of the January 13,2010 standing government directive on all Administrative Heads of Departments (AHoDs), to immediately cancel all such irregular and backdoor appointments and launch criminal proceedings against those officials involved by filing FIR with the State Vigilance Commission(SVC) and withdraw all payments of pension benefits till the cases were disposed off. With over 1,40,000 government employees in a state with around 19.8 lakh population, certainly the problem will only worsen if action is not taken against many of those offending officials who are still in service, if there is to be any meaning to the term call ‘rule’.

DailyDevotion The Way to Permanent Faith

Indeed the hour is coming…that you will be scattered… —John 16:32 Jesus was not rebuking the disciples in this passage. Their faith was real, but it was disordered and unfocused, and was not at work in the important realities of life. The disciples were scattered to their own concerns and they had interests apart from Jesus Christ. After we have the perfect relationship with God, through the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, our faith must be exercised in the realities of everyday life. We will be scattered, not into service but into the emptiness of our lives where we will see ruin and barrenness, to know what internal death to God’s blessings means. Are we prepared for this? It is certainly not of our own choosing, but God engineers our circumstances to take us there. Until we have been through that experience, our faith is sustained only by feelings and by blessings. But once we get there, no matter where God may place us or what inner emptiness we experience, we can praise God that all is well. That is what is meant by faith being exercised in the realities of life. “…you…will leave Me alone.” Have we been scattered and have we left Jesus alone by not seeing His providential care for us? Do we not see God at work in our circumstances? Dark times are allowed and come to us through the sovereignty of God. Are we prepared to let God do what He wants with us? Are we prepared to be separated from the outward, evident blessings of God? Until Jesus Christ is truly our Lord, we each have goals of our own which we serve. Our faith is real, but it is not yet permanent. And God is never in a hurry. If we are willing to wait, we will see God pointing out that we have been interested only in His blessings, instead of in God Himself. The sense of God’s blessings is fundamental. “…be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Unyielding spiritual fortitude is what we need.

Post-mortem

A piece of story of pieces Nagaland

T

he fight for Nagas Independence, Peace process or Agreement (as it is called now) has become a mockery. This is so because we are being cheated and tossed upon by the GOI from time immemorial. The phrase, “Nagas issue is almost settled” is heard even by grandparents. Many Nagas must have died awaiting the new dawn in the history of Nagaland. The same may continue in the generations to come. This is because Nagaland has been torn into pieces by many groups and associations all claiming to be the apex body. The body is there without a good head. Therefore, there is no apex head (Paradox of associations). We need not blame the Government at the centre/GOI for such prolonged illness of the Nagas. We have created our own diseases and sicknesses and appeal others for healing. This is totally absurd. The remedy is with us, not outside. Nagas have their own immune system. The good spirit of Phizo, Isak, Muivah, Khaplang, etc must have been swallowed by Government of India. Therefore, Naga continue to live without any good outcome. No one really knows about the fight for Independence, Sovereignty, Peace, etc because it has changed in the course of time. The so called “Agreement” is never a revelation to the general public because of its sensitivity both political and territorial. Is it an agree-

ment of all the Nagas or only some few leaders/groupswith the Government of India? The former would be for all the Nagas, the latter would be only for few Naga national leaders. I prefer the former because it is better to be under the Government of India with all the rights and privileges than to be under my own leaders who try to unite Nagas by spilling innocent blood even on broad day light and without any unity among themselves.I wonder which group will lead Nagas to the better future of hope. All groups are claiming to be better than others without any betterment. Unity under one flag is a missing mark in the history of Naga political life. Can all the Underground groups come together first under one cause before seeking for better solution? They have failed their duty in this respect and seek answers outside the State. No Prime Minister will solve the issue of Nagaland because we have not settled our internal issues first. We are undergoing a wrong treatment consciously. Look at our own internal life in the State. Different underground groups continue to kill each other and the Government of India is joyfully waiting for the last man to die so that Peace could be established. Are we waiting for this state of life? Let us not. We need not let the last Naga die in the name of peace process. The day may come when a

t is always a joy to come home during vacations and holidays to spend quality time with families and friends. But the sojourn back home is never pleasant due to the poor road condition, poor sanitation, clogged drainage and erratic power supply. Under such circumstances, I understand the plight of our fellow friends who had to live under such conditions in this modern age, albeit without much complaint. The National Highway that passes through the heart of Wokha Town has never been good ever since I remember. I am told that the last black topping some three- four years back lasted for about three months. So all these time, pedestrians and travelers have to deal with the annoying potholes, dust in winter and muds in rainy seasons. Currently, black topping of some few kilometers of the highway is under way, but the sight of the workmanship pains me, as it pains everyone who longs for good roads and better infrastructure. I first came across several pictures of the two weeks old road which is already showing sign of major damage on the social networks. And to my surprise the road is wearing off even before its proper completion. Therefore, I would like to appeal to the National Highway authorities to kindly depute its supervisor to properly monitor the road development activities as National Highways are constructed only once in three or five years. I would also like to request the elected representatives, district administration and the Lotha civil organisations to come together and provide possible assistance so that quality of construction is ensured. Lastly, the public should also do away with blocking the water canals and drainages as clogged drainage quickly erodes our roads for which we all suffer. Thank You. new race will inherit Nagaland with peace and prosperity. They will look back in laughter at Nagas for their carnivorous behaviour, from head hunting to hunting the whole body down. And Nagas will be found only in the history books (a page or so). What can be carried/done by us need to be fulfilled without putting it on others. We need not throw our burdens at others and blame them for not helping us. And Nagas are for sure burdened with many loads of differences and indifferences. The so called Naga national leaders must have gone to Delhi a thousand times for the same cause only to say that it is in the process, “Hobo le ase”. The peace process is still in pieces. And the Agreement is still disagreed by many people because they are unaware of it. These pieces are piercing the hearts of the Nagas deep down. Off course, we all appreciate the hard labours of the leaders. All the same, let us not sell Nagaland for a piece of silver coin that may lead to our own suicide. May be I am too idealistic with realism of Nagas life. But we need to change ourselves before the Government of India change us for better or worse. I have lived half of my life as per the normal span of human life. Yet, I am still awaiting the ray of light to befall on Nagas. G. L. Khing, Kohima, (tisislawkhing@gmail.com)

On selection of PMEGP beneficiaries

D

uring the past three or four decades, the educational status of Nagas of Nagaland was very poor or the extent that if a person completes his/her elementary standard he/she readily gets government job enjoying a handsome salary. However with the passage of time, if we are to compare those days to these days, there is a gulf of difference. In today’s world even graduates and post graduate youths have to run pillar to post in pursuit of primary teacher. In fact, the number of graduates and post graduates is increasing every year in terms thousand (if not exaggerated) thereby causing unemployment crises higher and higher. Indeed it is quite pathetic that some educated unemployed youths resort to unwanted elements out of sheer desperateness and hopelessness and ultimately spoil themselves. Therefore in the light of the above facts and circumstances, are we really justified to consider a class 8 passed youth as educated unemployed in today’s world? If I am not mistaken,

Rejoinder to Kaka Iralu and some of the NNPGs

R

ejoinder to Kaka Iralu and some of the Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) which appeared on local daily on 4th and 8th March 2017 respectively on Kaka D. Iralu issue. It is really surprising to see the write up of Eno Kaka D. Iralu, Ato Kilonser FGN which appeared in Nagaland Post on 04th March 2017 claiming to settle the Indo Naga Burma issues on behalf of the Nagas. That the Nagas or the GOI are really waiting to see that an hon’ble and amicable settlement should be arrived at over the decade political conflict of IndoNaga Burma issue till date. However, either side had failed to settle and come into a logical conclusion for the last 60-70 years though trying their level best. It is therefore, I the undersigned on behalf of the whole Villages Chief of Nagaland requested Eno Kaka D. Iralu to bring an amicable and a final settlement to the IndoNaga Burma conflict within the 300 days (i.e on or before the end of Dec.20th 2017) as he have assured before the Nagas. Failing of which, he or the FGN government should not disturb the Naga political issue and Peace Accord which talk is going between the GOI

and NSCN-IM. Moreover, if he fooled the Nagas who had completely sacrificed their lives under the Banners of NNC so shall questioned him and his FGN Government at any moment and the onus should be held by him only. Further, it is highly questionable as to why he did not solve the Indo-Naga Burma conflict within the last 60/70 years just after conducting the Naga plebiscite in 1951. Don’t blame others if you failed on your parts to do your duty for the Nagas common goal as no one had stopped you to do so in the earlier days. On NNPGs issue For the so-called 4/5 reunited NNPGs factions earlier the Nagas have recognized the whole Naga underground irrespective of factions as Naga National Workers as because, all of them were from the offshoot of NNC only. However, after declaration of 4/5 factions re-united from 7th March 2017, the so-called 4/5 united factions Working Group (WG) are not worthy to claimed as Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) as because, their claimed is only falls within the territorial boundary of the present State government of Nagaland. The present Nagaland state government has got its Inde-

pendence in 1960 through the 16th Points Agreement and map was also drawn for future guidance. And as such, the NNPGs (4/5 united groups) have no moral rights to called themselves as the NNPGs, more or less their activities are confined within the State of Nagaland and working with various state based NGO’s in the like of NTC and CNTC only. These NNPGs have declared to work with the Nagas of Nagaland only and if it is true, the Angamis can never give co-operation to them as because, the Angamis did not sacrificed for the Nagas of Nagaland only, but for the whole Nagas irrespective of territorial boundaries. The Angamis have gave our everything for the cause of the whole Nagas under the banner of NNC and for which the Angamis will not give anymore co-operation to such NNPGs in the near future if they fail to realize themselves and work for the whole Nagas common cause and come into their original path. Now the 4/5 NNPGs should not disturb the Naga political issue unless they joined in the peace process. ‘OR’ if any factions of Naga National workers is willing to works for Naga common goal as endorsed by the Nagas, join the Naga political

My observations in the No discussion on foothill prevailing situation in Nagaland road construction

am not perfect but I am only speaking out my sincere views in the events of the situation. I have been pleading for equal wage between men and women which was resolved to be supported by NMA in their meeting at Kohima village and I have been expressing my concern about humiliation of women especially widows. But on ULB issue, as far as Nagaland is concerned, reservation of 33% for women is not necessary and women should go together with the public of the Nagas and not to go against the interest of the public. In the event of public commotion, the Nagas often forget Christ. Once Niathu Resort was destroyed by mob out of communalism which showed Godlessness. Last year in the event of public upheaval against ULB election, the attempt made by extremists to destroy the house of the Chief Minister was a matter of excessiveness. It is a very sad thing that two precious lives were lost in the incident. Who opened fire? I blame them. But who led the mob to destroy the house? They are blamed too, because the act is beyond the limit. In connection with the sad incident the Municipal houses

scheme/projects like PMEGP has been launched by the central government so that educated unemployed youths can be self-employed in their chosen projects. But to the utter dismay and despair of educated unemployed youths, the modus operand in selection of the applicants is quite unfair by selecting class 8 passed youths and dropping all applicants with BA/MA degrees adding woes to the educated youths and what we call merit basis remains a far cry as is being replaced by the basis of nepotism and favouritism and the mighty interference of the so called politicians beyond the say of the concerned department i.e (DIC). Indeed it amply manifest that we are moving backward while the rest of the world are moving forward whether we agree or not. Hence, if this trend of selection goes on unabated, the plight of the educated unemployed youths would only soar higher and higher. Let justice be given a place. D. Thomsong, Athibung Town (N)

were burnt up. It is learnt that the perpetrators got drunk with the contraband goods of wine stored there. Whose losses are the destruction of the houses? In spite of being Christians, are the people given licence to perpetrate such barbarous acts of violence? Vast majority of our people are professed believers of Christ without Christians conscience. Naga societies are floating on emotionalism and digging the truth is found lacking. With regard to the much emphasis of slogan,” INCLUSIVENESS”. I too was one who pleaded for it. But is it inclusiveness in accepting the success or failure of one another’s success or failure with the spirit of tolerance and reconciliation? It is constructive inclusiveness. If inclusiveness is intended by rubbing off the slate and to rewrite the whole set, it is not the spirit of reconciliation. So inclusiveness should be in the spirit of true reconciliation and forwardness by accepting the success or achievement or failure of one another without which it will be impracticable to any organisation. Anytime, anywhere and in any thing we have to look up to Christ first and then act. Rev.L.Suohie Mhasi, (rev.suohie_mhasi@yahoo.com)

uring these ten (10) days of 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly 2017 session, I wonder why there was no discussion in relation to “The Foothill Road” construction. As we all know that we Naga brothers and sisters commuters, whoever travelling through our neighbouring state Assam are facing immense hardship and inconvenience. In order to achieve our goal towards completion of this project, our only hope rest upon our 60 elected members (State Government). Our Foothill Project was started in the year 2013 through Special Package from the Government of India by allocating an amount of Rs.70 cores. The Project started but it has been lying unattended till date. Hence as a concerned senior citizen, I personally urge that it is the responsibility of the State Government to take primary and active initiation towards the Foothill Project which is lying unattended at its very initial stage, and since the last five year I have not seen serious initiative been carried out by the State Government for the completion of the Project. As a concerned citizen of our beloved State Nagaland, I believe and pray that let our Almighty bless our Naga Leaders with wisdom and understanding so as to realize that good roads in our land will provide good commute and easy accessibility amongst the people which will help in the development and progression of the State as a whole and also for the betterment of the coming generations. Lastly all the Naga Landowners and concerned individuals are also patiently waiting and prayfully hoping that this Project may come to reality. Reader’s Post The power and beauty of newspaper!

Sir,

Newspaper is magic! It’s a chronicle and encyclopaedia in miniature. It greets us every morning and makes us valuable. Interestingly, it helps us to go with the world. For students, newspaper is their best education. It helps them to improve their speaking and writing skills. Collecting photos, gathering articles and making collages improve the students mind and skill. Newspaper lover are good in any discussion and can baffle any opponents. They also get promotion as they are respected for their knowledge. Abraham Lincoln, Einstein and Mahatma Gandhi were fond of newspaper. This was their secret of success. Newspaper helps us to search for right job and career too. It helps us to care for our health through it dissemination of new findings. Latest news on invention and discovery comes from newspaper and not from books or magazine. Politician, writer, insurgent group and even terrorist need newspaper for their ideology. Even television news are copied from morning newspaper. Contents like cartoon, poems, jokes, painting, quotes and crossword make newspaper a world of beauty. I can survive without television but not without newspaper. Before I wake up, I love to read newspaper in bed. It’s an integral part of my life. Thank you editor and journalists. R.K.Krishta Luke, (lukerkkrishta@gmail.com) Reader’s note: Articles or letters published in any of the columns do not reflect the view of this newspaper nor that of the Editor in any manner.

Police run an anti-Romeo operation at a mall in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

New Delhi, Apr 4 (IANS): A group of women activists on Tuesday demanded immediate disbanding of the “anti-Romeo squads” in Uttar Pradesh and withdrawal of FIRs and complaints against Advocate Prashant Bhushan, filed over his tweet involving Lord Krishna. In a joint statement, they said that these squads were a threat to women’s freedom, and added that the serious issue of violence against women and routine sexual harassment of women in Uttar Pradesh “cannot be addressed by setting up antiRomeo squads”. “We demand that the anti-Romeo squads be im-

mediately wound up by the U.P. state, and women’s groups that have been engaged with issues of ending sexual harassment and violence against women for long periods of time be consulted to develop mechanisms to end such violence,” said the statement issued here. The group of over 20 women activists who sought disbanding of the anti-Romeo squads included Aruna Roy of the National Federation of Indian Women; Syeda Hameed of the Muslim Women’s Forum; Indira Jaising, a lawyer and human rights activist; Dipa Sinha of the Right to Food Campaign; Vrinda Grover,

Advocate, human rights activist; and Arundhati Dhuru of the National Alliance of People’s Movement. Anti-Romeo squads were introduced by the recently-installed Yogi Adityanath government in the state to curb instances of eve-teasing, which was one of the poll promises of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “It has already come to light that in many cases, these anti-Romeo squads have become an even greater source of harassment and fear for women and men, which has even been acknowledged by the DG Police, U.P...,” reads the statement. These activists said the so-called anti-Romeo squads were being encouraged by a state, which “reneges on its own obligations to maintain law and order”. They alleged the FIR against Prashant Bhushan was “a clear case of abuse of power” and demanded it to be squashed. “Curbs on freedom of speech is not just intolerance, but in violation of the fundamental rights,” the statement said.

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 4 (IANS): People in Kerala for the past two days are facing a severe shortage of currency notes. State Finance Minister Thomas Issac on Tuesday said the crisis is severe and it has come to a stage that even the payment of salaries and pensions through state treasuries is being affected. While most state government officials and pensioners are dependent on state-run treasuries, Tuesday saw large crowds waiting anxiously in front of many treasuries in the state as close to 110 state treasuries were not able to source money from the banks which supply currency notes to them. “We have been waiting since morning and it’s been several hours. The treasury officials say they have not been able to get adequate currency notes,” said a group of women pensioners in Kochi. The worst affected have been the people who draw money from various State Bank of India ATMs in the state capital. “There is a limit to putting people to trouble, as for the past two days, I have been visiting numerous SBI ATMs. If there is no currency, why can’t they put a board, stating that there is no currency,” said a working woman, who has still not been able to withdraw her salary.

gation by the Kolkata civic body on a batch of alleged “artificial eggs” did not find any abnormality, an official said on Tuesday. Allaying fears of the public over the “artificial eggs” issue, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday had said a probe is on in the matter but exhorted the public to consume eggs produced in the state without any apprehension. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has reiterated the same. “The shells had calcium carbonate. This means they were regular eggs and were harmless. We are awaiting the results of the tests that were ordered by the state government,” said Mayor In Council (Health) Atin Ghosh. The artificial eggs con-

troversy came to light after a woman lodged a police complaint alleging she was sold “fake eggs” that had a strange “plastic-like quality” when they were spread out on a pan. A shopkeeper

was arrested in connection with the case. A team from the civic body headed by Ghosh raided various city markets and seized similar samples of artificial eggs. According to Ghosh, the

eggs sold by the arrested shopkeeper were procured from a wholesaler in the city’s Muchipara area. Banerjee said action will be taken if something is discovered.

India-UK launch 240 mn pound fund for green energy New Delhi, Apr 4 (IANS): India and Britain on Tuesday agreed to jointly set up a fund with corpus contributions of 120 million pounds each to finance Indian infrastructure projects, it was announced. “In a major step taken today (Tuesday) on the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF), a sub-fund with UK and NIIF participation was agreed upon,” Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told reporters. He was briefing the media after the ninth India-UK Economic and Financial Dialogue here with the British delegation led by Chancellor

of the Exchequer Philip Hammond. “The Green Growth Equity Fund will have contributions of 120 million pounds from each participant to finance energy needs in India,” he added. The joint statement at the end of the talks said the “joint fund aims to raise 500 million pounds by also leveraging private sector investment from the city of London to finance Indian infrastructure projects.” India set up the NIIF in December 2015 as an investment vehicle for funding commercially viable greenfield, brownfield and stalled projects.

Last year, the government announced that it is in the process of setting up two sub-funds under NIIF -- one in renewable energy, and another with focus on highway projects. Both ministers said they also discussed a possible free trade agreement (FTA) after Britain formally leaves European Union (EU) through a protracted process that is expected to take about two years to complete. “Post-Brexit, they are looking for more open trade, and more trade arrangements with India,” Jaitley said.

But, this year the elephants have become fiercer and for which the villagers cannot undertake any activity in the Tzuring valley, WVC said. Unicommerce will break even in the quarter to June, giving a fillip to its profitability plan, Vikal said. Snapdeal has cut costs by using automated systems to reduce labour costs, renegotiated vendor contracts and it plans to let go of excess floor space at its headquarters outside New Delhi, Vikal said. In February, the firm also laid off 600 employees and its founders Kunal Bahl and Rohit Bansal stopped drawing salaries. The measures and a steep reduction in fulfilment costs have helped the company reduce losses sharply, said Vikal. Vikal declined to comment on whether Snapdeal could be an acquisition target. Alibaba, according to a source, is in early talks with SoftBank about potentially merging Snapdeal with local rival Paytm.

NEW DELHI, Apr 4 (PTI): Railways has roped in self-help groups (SHGs) for providing local cuisines in running trains through station-based e-catering service. Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited, the catering arm of railways, has empanelled nine SHGs to provide authentic regional food cooked in hygienic conditions at 10 stations including Adra, Secunderabad, Vijayawada, Mysore, Ernakulam and Vishakhapatnam. Passengers of all trains originating/stopping at these stations can avail of the facility of SHG cooked food through e-catering. Railways had launched the station-based e-catering facility last year to widen the scope of catering options for train travellers. The loc al cuisine scheme has been launched to encourage self-help groups to participate in the public transporter’s catering system and also to provide multiple options for passengers to avail on the train journey, a senior Railway Ministry official said.

Liakath Ali -- nabbed from Chennai -- was involved in cheating Indian Bank, Thousand Lights Branch, Chennai, using eight shell companies and remitted $11,778,120 (Rs 78 crore) out of India, against forged Bill of Entries without effecting any actual imports, said the official. Ali and his brother Eliyas Peer Mohamed masterminded the fraud by opening fictitious accounts in the names of shell companies like Galaxy Impex, Green International, and Snow City and Company. The agency attached over Rs 36 crore worth of properties of Agarwal, who was the Principal Secretary (Higher Education) in the Chhattisgarh government, and was arrested by the CBI.

MUMBAI, Apr 4 (Agencies): Indian online retailer Snapdeal is looking to raise just over $100 million from existing shareholders including Japan’s SoftBank and new investors, its chief financial officer said. The company, which last year lost its second place in India’s fiercely competitive online retail market to Amazon.com Inc, aims to become profitable in two years but faces falling cash reserves. CFO Anup Vikal said Snapdeal has enough cash for this year, after sources told Reuters last month that the company was seeking investment to shore up its finances after unsuccessful talks with Chinese funds and existing investor Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. “About a $100 million plus is what we need, until we start being independent,” Vikal told Reuters in an interview

‘Gas attack’ kills 58 in Syria town

Xi leaves for his first summit with Trump BEIJING, APR 4 (PTI): Chinese President Xi Jinping today left for Finland from where he would travel to the US for his first summit with US President Donald Trump during which the two leaders are expected to discuss a range of global issues, including North Korea’s nuclear ambitions. Xi will hold talks with President of Finland Sauli Niinisto during his visit to Helsinki and will meet Trump on April 6 at his luxurious home in Mar-aLago in Florida. Ahead of the key summit, Chinese and US officials held talks to ensure that the first summit is a complete success amid tough assertions by Trump that Washington will act alone if Beijing failed to take a tougher stand against North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme.

carried out strikes that released “toxic gas”. It said 11 children were among the dead, with at least 160 injured, and that many people were dying even after arriving at medical facilities. The monitor could not confirm the nature of the gas or whether the strikes were carried out by Syrian warplanes or those of government ally Russia. It relies on a network of sources inside Syria and says it determines whose planes carry out raids according to type, location, flight patterns and munitions used. An AFP journalist in

Khan Sheikun saw a young girl, a woman and two elderly people dead at the hospital prior to the bombardment, all with foam still visible around their mouths. Doctors at the facility had been using basic equipment, some not even wearing lab coats, and attempting to revive patients who were not breathing. The town is in Syria’s Idlib province, which is largely controlled by an alliance of rebels including former Al-Qaeda affiliate Fateh al-Sham Front. The province is regularly targeted in strikes by the regime, as well as Russian warplanes, and has also

been hit by the US-led coalition fighting the Islamic State group, usually targeting jihadists. Syria’s leading opposition group, the National Coalition, accused the “regime of the criminal Bashar” of being behind the attack. It called on the UN Security Council to convene an emergency session, “open an immediate investigation and take the necessary measures to ensure the officials, perpetrators and supporters are held accountable.” “Failure to do so will be understood as a message of blessing to the regime for its actions,” the statement added.

LO N D O N, A P R 4 (IANS): British Prime Minister Theresa May has defended her trip to Saudi Arabia, saying its ties with the UK are important for security and prosperity, a media report said on Tuesday. The Premier is facing questions about the UK’s support for the Saudi-led coalition which is fighting rebels in Yemen, the BBC reported. Speaking to the media as she travelled to Jordan, which she is visiting before travelling to Saudi Arabia, May said humanitarian aid was one of the issues she would be discussing on her trip. “We are concerned about the humanitarian situation -- that’s why the UK last year was the fourth largest donor to the Yemen in terms of humanitarian aid ($128 million). We will be continuing with that,” she told the BBC. “And yes, we will be raising the humanitarian issue. We believe it is important that we recognise the threat that there is in terms of people’s lives.” May said she would also be raising human rights issues with the Saudi Arabian officials, adding that “if we have the relationship we are able to do that”.

Washington to ensure UN imposes sanctions on terrorists, says Haley U N I T E D NAT I O N S, APR 4 (IANS/PTI): Washington will take the lead in getting sanctions imposed on terrorists or look for other ways to take action if faced with Security Council vetoes, according to US Permanent Representative to the UN Nikki Haley. Haley, who assumed the presidency of the Security Council for April, was asked at a news conference on Monday about terrorist attacks on India and, having said that she “would take names,” what would she do about a permanent member’s veto on imposing sanctions on certain terrorists. Describing the US administration as “more aggressive,” Haley, who has a cabinet rank in President Donald Trump’s government, said that to fight terrorism “the administration is very much looking at all these avenues and some of the things we have talked about is sanctions and who is on the list”. “We want to make sure that we are calling out those that we want to call out. We want to make sure that we are leading towards a result and not sitting back and allowing things to happen,” she added. Haley said: “You are

‘Was brought up by Sikh parents to be strong’

N i k k i H a l e y, t h e tough-talking and blunt US Ambassador to the UN, has said she was raised by her Sikh parents to be “strong”. Haley, 45, brought up her Indian heritage while addressing a press conference after assuming the role of President of the Security Council for the month of April. Asked about her qualities of being able to speak freely and openly, Haley said, “Every position that I have ever had, people have assumed that I’m looking

towards something bigger when in reality I’m the daughter of Indian parents who said to me ‘whatever you do be great at it and make sure people remember you for it’. That is all I am trying to do,” Haley said. “That is all I have ever known how to be is to try and just do my job to the best of my ability and if that comes out blunt and if that comes out strong -- I’m one of two brothers and a sister -- my parents raised us all to be strong,” she said.

US to end funding for UNPF over abortion S Korea’s Ahn wins presidential nomination WASHINGTON APR 4 (AFP): The US government plans to stop funding the United Nations Population Fund because of the organisation’s “coercive” family planning practices, including providing abortions, officials in Washington have said. According to a State Department official, President Donald Trump has instructed Secretary of State Rex Tillerson “to take all necessary actions, to the extent permitted by law, to ensure that US taxpayer dollars do not fund organisations or programmes that support or participate in the management of a programme of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilisation.” The funding cut would go into effect during the 2017 fiscal year, the official said in a statement.

Flood-hit Colombia city mourns as death toll climbs

The decision to terminate US donations to the UN agency was “based on the fact that China’s family planning policies still involve the use of coercive abortion and involuntary sterilisation, and UNFPA partners on family planning activities with the Chinese government agency responsible for these coercive policies,” the statement said. “The determination will result in withholding USD 32.5 million of fiscal year 2017 funding, provided for UNFPA,” it said, adding that the funds instead will be directed to other global health programs. The UN Population Fund in 2015 received contributions totalling USD 979 million, according to its website. The organisation,

which provides reproductive health and birth control services in more than 150 countries and territories, said early today that it “regrets” the decision by Washington “to deny any future funding for its lifesaving work the world over.” UNFPA said in a statement in which it also vigorously pushed back against “erroneous” US charges that it plays a role in forced abortions and sterilisations in China. “UNFPA refutes this claim, as all of its work promotes the human rights of individuals and couples to make their own decisions, free of coercion or discrimination,” it said. “Indeed, United Nations Member States have long described UNFPA’s work in China as a force for good.”

I will devote myself to the people.” The 55-year-old, who went from doctor to IT expert and then a politician, pledged to create future-oriented jobs and assist startups. The victory gave Ahn a second chance to run for the presidency following his first challenge in 2012. He dropped out of that race, endorsing Moon, then the odds-on favorite of the liberal bloc, as a unified candidate. However, the deal failed to beat then-conservative candidate Park Geun-

hye and Ahn broke with Moon after a factional dispute. “Compared to 2012, I have become a million-fold stronger,” he said. “I will build a country where a selfmade man succeeds, instead of those relying on inheritances,” Ahn said, implicitly targeting Moon whose political career started as a chief aide of former President Roh Moo-hyun. With Ahn’s nomination, all of five major parliamentary parties have finished selecting their candidates. Ahn’s popularity has increased throughout the weeks-long primary race in opinion polls: about two weeks ago, his support was at around 10 percent, but it now hovers between 18 and 22 percent.

KHAN SHEIKHUN (SYRIA), APR 4 (AFP): A suspected chemical attack killed at least 58 civilians including several children in rebel-held northwestern Syria today, a monitor said, with the opposition accusing the government and demanding a UN investigation. The attack in the town of Khan Sheikhun left dozens suffering respiratory problems and symptoms including vomiting, fainting and foaming at the mouth, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. A hospital in the town where doctors were treating victims of the attack was also bombarded, an AFP correspondent said. The entrance of the building was hit, bringing down rubble on top of medics who had earlier been seen dousing a steady stream of arrivals to wash away chemical residue. The violence came as the European Union and UN hosted a conference in Brussels on Syria’s future, with confusion over Washington’s position on the issue of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s future. The Observatory said the attack on a residential part of Khan Sheikhun came in the early hours of Tuesday, when a warplane

Security important for men too: Manoj Bajpayee

ctor Manoj Bajpayee says it is important to think about the security of men along with women. “Women’s security is a concern that we all should collectively address. But security is not just important for women, it’s for men too. It is not gender specific,” Manoj said in a statement. Manoj, who was last seen on screen in “Naam Shabana” with which brand Godrej Security solutions also got associated, added: “It’s important that we should teach our younger generation to be alert, and to be prepared. There are men who are harmless. “We all should always be vigilant and alert. That’s how I lead my life and I urge my fans to do the same.” Manoj’s film “Naam Shabana”, which also features Taapsee Pannu and Akshay Kumar, is doing well at the box office. It is based on Taapsee’s character in Neeraj Pandey’s 2015 action spy thriller film “Baby”.

The next ‘Terminator’ film may reunite Arnold with James Cameron

A

rnold Schwarzenegger has hinted that he may work with James Cameron again on a new Terminator film. The actor and director worked together on the first two films in the franchise, which were released in 1984 and 1991 (Terminator 2: Judgement Day) respectively. The latest film in the Terminator series, Genisys, was released in 2015. Despite the fact that Paramount Pictures have ended their involvement with the Terminator franchise, Schwarzenegger remains hopeful that not only will there be another film, but that Cameron will also be involved in a direct role in production. “I’m looking forward to doing another Terminator movie, yes. I don’t want to call it, like, fake news, like the President calls it, but I think people just write things, I have no idea why,” he said in an interview with

Meanwhile, Cameron is busy working on shooting the four sequels to Avatar – with filming expected to start in the autumn.

Fandango. “Just because Paramount doesn’t want to pick up the Terminator franchise, you have 15 other studios willing to do it, that doesn’t mean the Terminator franchise is finished, right? It just means they are on their way to negotiate with another studio, but I can’t give you the details of that. They’ll announce that. But, yes, the Terminator franchise is never finished.” Schwarzenegger then reminded reporters that

Night workers may find diabetes harder to control

P

eople with Type 2 diabetes are likely to have poorer control over their blood glucose levels if they are working in night shifts, researchers say. The study revealed that night shift workers had an average glycemic count of 8.2 per cent, significantly higher than the 7.6 per cent count for daytime workers and 7.5 per cent count for participants who did not work. Most people with diabetes should strive for an

A1C level below seven per cent, according to the Hormone Health Network. “Our study data raise awareness of the difficulty in diabetes control among night shift workers,” said Sirimon Reutrakul, Associate Professor at Mahidol University in Thailand. Further, the sleep restriction and circadian disruptions caused by night shifts may also increase the risk of developing diabetes as compared to those who work in the daytime or are unemployed.

For the study, presented at the Endocrine Society’s 99th annual meeting ENDO 2017, in Orlando, the team studied 260 individuals -- 62 night shift workers, 94 daytime workers and 104 unemployed individuals -- with Type 2 diabetes in Thailand.

Cameron will own the rights to the franchise from 2019 – marking 35 years since the release of the original Terminator – and then confirmed that the Avatar director would be involved in the next film. “Cameron will be producing it, and there will be another director on it. I’m always looking forward to doing another Terminator, especially if the story is written well and it really entertains the whole world.”

here are speakers and then there is the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound Shape, a wireless speaker system that actually looks better than most art. The BeoSound Shape is a wireless speaker system that mounts to a wall to offer immersive sound with resonance dampening. That means it’s ideal for all sorts of spaces even beyond the home in larger areas like

showrooms, hotel lobbies, offices, studios, shops and more. The BeoSound Shape is made up of a combination of speakers, amplifiers and acoustic dampeners in tiles. You need a minimum of six of these tiles but as many more can be added as needed. These come in brown, green, pink and blue. The tile layout is totally

open to personal choice meaning you can layout the design as you see fit. A nice touch for the arty types but also functional for spaces that require a certain shape. B&O says an algorithm has been created to offer sound which makes it as if the band were playing right there on the wall, with the vocals in the centre surrounded by the instruments.

India third in WADA doping charts increasing in the last three years. India had 91 and 96 Anti-doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) in 2013 and 2014 respectively. An ADRV is a doping offence committed by an athlete or athlete support person, which results in certain consequences or sanctions. It is derived from adverse analytical findings (AAFs), commonly known as ‘positive’ results. Of the 117 Indian dope offenders of 2015, two are non-analytical ADRVs, which refer to cases that do not involve detection of a prohibited substance by a WADA-accredited laboratory but instances like failure to submit to a test, possession, use or trafficking of a prohibited substance by athletes and support personnel. Out of the 115 analytical ADRVs, 78 are committed by male athletes while 37 are by female. A m o n g i n d iv i d u a l sports, weightlifting has taken over athletics as the dirtiest with a whopping 56 Indian lifters (32 male and 24 female) punished for doping. Athletics contributed the

second highest number of dope offenders with (14 men and 7 womens), followed by boxing (8), wrestling (8), cycling (4), kabaddi (4), aquatics (3), powerlifting (3), judo (2), wushu (2), rowing, bodybuilding (1), hockey (1), football (1) and street and ball hockey (1). Among the NADOs, India’s National AntiDoping Agency recorded 109 ADRVs, the second highest behind Russia’s (127). The NADA took 5162 samples during 2015 out of which 110 tested positive for banned substances (AAFs = Adverse Analytical Findings). But there was no sanction in one case. A total of 229,412 samples were received and analysed in 2015 by WADAaccredited laboratories worldwide. Out of these, 2,522 samples were reported as AAFs. There were a total of 1,929 ADRVs (1,901 from athletes and 28 from athlete support personnel) out of which 1,649 are analytical findings and 280 from ‘evidence-based intelligence’ non-analytical findings.

Arsenal fans hold protest during a Premier League match.

L o nd o n , A p r 4 (Agencies): Arsene Wenger has once again refused to reveal whether or not he intends to remain at Arsenal beyond the end of the season. Wenger’s contract is due to expire in the summer and his future remains unclear with some fans calling for him step down after more than two decades in charge of the London club. His future has dominated press conference in recent weeks and the 67-year-old maintains that there will be an announcement ‘soon’. “I have answered the question about my future many times. Do not worry, you will get the answer soon,” said Wenger ahead of Wednesday’s Premier

League match with West Ham. “I am a professional a n d w h e n yo u a r e a professional you perform in ideal conditions and non-ideal conditions. I love to win football games and I just focus on that. I work for my club with honesty and integrity. I am not scared and accept the judgement of the people. I focus on what I think is important during the game.” Arsenal are currently seven points outside the top four and, with the club facing a battle to qualify for the Champions League, some fans have made their feelings known by hanging a n t i - We n g e r b a n n e r s outside the club’s London Colney training ground. When asked about the protest, Wenger said,

“What I believe, again, is everybody has an opinion today. What is important is that guys who can influence the results stick together and take care of what matters really for them, which is to win football games.” “Look, I’m not in politics. It’s not about majority or minority. You just want our fans to stand behind the team and the club, and that’s what they did. I’ve said many times, it’s not about me. I care about Arsenal, about the club, about what we have achieved and what we want to achieve. That’s what you want to do. I will support Arsenal when I’m not here anymore exactly the same [as I do now]. What you want is the fans to stand behind the team.”

Out of 1649 are Analytical ADRVs, 1304 cases (79 per cent) were of male and 345 female (21 per cent); 390 (24 per cent) were from out-ofcompetition tests and 1259 in-competition (76 per cent); 1644 urine and five blood. The dope offenders belong to 80 sports/ disciplines and 121 nationalities. Among sports disciplines worldwide, bodybuilding over took athletics in contributing the highest number of dope cheats with 270 such cases. New Delhi, Apr 4 (PTI): Sporting minnows India has been ranked third for the third year in a row in a doping violation report published by World AntiDoping Agency for 2015 with 117 athletes from the country being punished after testing positive for banned substances. India followed Russian Federation (176) and Italy (129) at third spot in the doping violation chart released by the WADA, the same position as in the reports of 2013 and 2014. All the dope violations by the Indians came from urine samples. The dope violations were committed during 2015 and the WADA chart was prepared after compiling information of analytical findings and sanctions rendered till January 31 this year by various accredited antidoping bodies. This is the first set of Anti-Doping Rule Violation statistics under the revised WADA Code and third such report in its history since 2013. The worrying sign for India is that the number of dope offenders has been

IPL 10 to kick off without some big stars Bhutia reinstated as AIFF advisor

Captains of the Indian Premier League 2017 strike a pose on Tuesday. The first match of the IPL will be played in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

New Delhi, Apr 4 ( P T I ) : V i r a t Ko h l i ’s colossal presence is sure to be missed when the 10th Indian Premier League (IPL) takes off on Wednesday after a buildup mired in administrative tug-of-war over funds. A clutch of Indian stars led by Kohli are out of this edition - either partially or fully, which certainly lessens the novelty factor for all the star gazers. Even off the field, the run-up to the tournament has been far from smooth. Several state units had expressed their inability to conduct matches, citing

lack of funds, before the Supreme Courtappointed Committee of Administrators stepped in to resolve the matter. The COA will have the onerous job of continuing to keep an eye on officials to ensure that no such teething troubles crop up during the tournament. On to the cricketing issues, it will only be known next week when exactly Kohli will start playing in the league for Royal Challengers Bangalore as he continues to recover from a shoulder injury. Another big name to be missing from early

action would be South African swashbuckler A B de Villiers. Nursing a back injury, there is no clarity on his availability just yet. Till the likes of Kohli and de Villiers come back, the onus of providing perfect “cricketainment” will lie with someone who responds to the name of Christopher Henry Gayle. If Gayle just stands and delivers, RCB will again have a feast. There will be curiosity regarding what T20 specialist Tymal Mills, bought for Rs 12 crore, will bring to the table and how stand-in captain

Shane Watson uses him. Sport needs characters and cricket even more so. O f f - s p i n n e r Ravichandran Ashwin’s absence from Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) means there would a bit less colour on the field. But all eyes will be on Ben Stokes, bought for Rs 14.5 crore by Pune. Each ball that the ‘Big Ben’ bowls and each run he scores will be equated with his pay package. Steve Smith and Faf du Plessis both got injured the last time but would like to make amends in this edition. For the hugely popular Mumbai Indians, skipper Rohit Sharma’s form at the top will be important not only for his franchise but also for the Indian team that will defend the Champions Trophy in the United Kingdom. Kolkata Knight Riders will depend a lot on their quartet of Indian batsmen, including skipper Gautam Gambhir, Surya Kumar Yadav, Robin Uthappa and Manish Pandey. Kings XI Punjab would miss Murali Vijay but Glenn Maxwell, after a few indifferent knocks last season, may just tee off well. The flashy Manan Vohra, talented Marcus Stoinis and the everdependable Wriddhiman

Saha will form the core of their batting under Virender Sehwag’s mentorship. For Gujarat Lions captain Suresh Raina, this season will be a make or break one after being dropped from the oneday squad and central contracts. Till Ravindra Jadeja is absent, Dwayne Bravo will have to take more responsibility as an all-founder. The Delhi Daredevils, after making some inexplicable choices and some injury setbacks, are the weakest team in the competition. Quinton de Kock’s absence is going to hurt them badly as mentor Rahul Dravid has already pointed out. They would depend on their band of speed merchants, including the wily Zaheer Khan, Mohammed Shami, Chris Morris, Pat Cummins and Kagiso Rabada. On a slow Kotla track, Amit Mishra could prove to be the trump card. Last but not the least are the defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad with David Warner at the helm. The core remains the same. Yuvraj Singh, Deepak Hooda and Shikhar Dhawan are capable of changing the course of the match. As a cycle gets complete, the craze will only travel northwards.

K o l kata , A p r 4 (IANS): For mer India captain Bhaichung Bhutia has been reinstated as advisor to the All India Football Federation (AIFF) for a one year term. Bhutia’s contract as advisor was not renewed after December. In March he was also removed from the technical committee of the AIFF and was replaced by former India legend Shyam Thapa. “Yes I have agreed to a one year contract extension as the advisor to the AIFF,” Bhutia confirmed to IANS on Tuesday when asked about it. “When I took charge as advisor for the first time, India were ranked in the region of 160. When

Bhaichung Bhutia

I left in December, they were around 130. Now the aim will be to take things forward.” “ We w i l l a l s o b e focusing more on grassroots programme. During my first stint, I had put a lot of emphasis on grassroots

as that is the way forward. ,” the iconic Sikkimese footballer added. Asked about the U-17 World Cup India is going to host for the first time later this year, Bhutia said the team has been given the best possible exposure and the AIFF has left no stone unturned in their preparations for the youth showpiece. “We have given them ample exposure trips to all parts of the world. I don’t think even countries like England and other European countries do so much in terms of preparing the boys. They have been looked after well and I hope we do well in the World Cup,” he asserted.

Tennis ball cricket tourney D i ma p u r , A p r 4 (NPN): Tennis ball open cricket tournament, organised by Classic Brothers, will be held from April 8 at Chumukedima ground. The tournament will be played on Saturdays and Sundays. Entry fee for the tournament is Rs 2200. The winner of the tournament will receive a cash prize of Rs. 15,000 while the runner up will pocket Rs. 6000. For Team Nagaland members with Cricket Association of Bihar general secretary Aditya Verma at Patna during the 6th more information, contact M.P.Verma Inter-State Cricket Invitation Cup. Nagaland won the first match by 4 wickets against Mizoram. The state organiser at 8730967525 or team will next face Bihar on April 6. 7005079985.

Dipa Karmakar to miss Asian gymnastics meet

Dipa Karmakar

Mumbai, Apr 4 (Agencies): Star Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar has been ruled out of the 2017 Asian Gymnastics Championship, due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Dipa, who had mesmerised the world of gymnastics during the 2016 Rio Olympics, suffered the

injury during a training camp at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, in New Delhi, according to reports. The 23-year-old has travelled to Mumbai, in order to have her injury operated on by reknowned doctor Anant Joshi, who had also previously treated Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. ACL is generally considered to be a long term injury, and Dipa, in all probabilities will be ruled out of next month’s Asian Gymnastics Championship meet. With the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games coming up next year, Indian fans would be hoping that Dipa, who is the first woman gymnast from the country, will recover in time to carry the country’s flag in the two prestigious competitions.

Messi back for Barcelona

Madrid, Apr 4 (IANS): Argentine talisman Lionel Messi is back for FC Barcelona as they look to maintain their La Liga football title hopes with a home game against Sevilla on Wednesday night. Wednesday could be decisive in the race for the La Liga title as Real Madrid kick off their game away against Leganes almost as soon as the final whistle blows in the Camp Nou stadium in the Barcelona-Sevilla tie. Barcelona kick off two points behind Real Madrid and with an extra game played, but Messi’s return after suspension and that of defender Gerard Pique will be a major boost for Luis Enrique’s side. Neymar and especially Luis Suarez ensured that Messi wasn’t missed at the weekend, but his return will be important against a Sevilla side that looks to have run off the rails in recent matches. The departure of Sporting Director, Monchi, has only served to complicate off-field matters for a side which looks tired and will once again be without defenders Gabriel Mercado and Adil Rami for the trip to Barcelona.
