Oppn take EVM woes to EC
NEW DELHI, APR 27 (AGENCIES): Opposition parties on Saturday approached the Election Commission alleging the display of party name only under the BJP symbol on EVMs during a mock poll in West Bengal’s Barrackpore constituency. However the poll panel has maintained that the same insignia was used for the party in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. A delegation comprising senior Congress leaders Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Ahmed Patel and Trinamool Congress’ Dinesh Trivedi and Derek O’Brien met Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora and demanded that either all such EVMs be removed from the remaining phases of elections or the names of other parties be added too. The EVMs display the party symbols, name of the candidates and their photographs. “On EVMs, the letters ‘BJP’ are visible under the party’s symbol. No other party’s name is there. Either remove all machines which mention the BJP clearly or all other parties’ name should be added in all such machines. Till then the use of these machines has to
be stopped,” Singhvi told reporters after meeting the CEC. Former Railway Minister Trivedi, who is also a sitting MP from Barrackpore, said this was a “clear fraud on the people” and an attempt to “hack EVMs.” He also showed purported photographs of the EVM where the party symbol of lotus included the words BJP.
DCF condemns bomb attacks in Sri Lanka
NSCN (I-M) says ready to fight IS if they launch terror attack
DIMAPUR, APR 27 (NPN): Dimapur Christian Forum (DCF), Nagaland has strongly condemned the bomb attacks in churches and hotels across Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday. Sri Lanka on Thursday had revised the death toll to around 253 from 359, saying there was a miscalculation due to the severity of the explosion and many body parts. In a press release, DCF president Moses Murry and secretary Fr. CP Anto said the Forum held its emergency meeting on April 27, 2019 at Bishop’s House Dimapur and voiced out strongly in support of Sri Lankans rights to peaceful life. The forum also said that it stood in solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka at the most painful moments of sadness and distress. DCF also conveyed deep condolences to those who have lost their dear and near ones and prayed that Lord Jesus Christ grant eternal rest to the departed souls and a speedy recovery to those injured in the tragic event. The Forum also appreciated the Sri Lankan Christians who stood as model and exemplary not to react and revenge but showed to the world what Christ’s love, forgiveness and reconciliation.

“Yesterday [Friday] the commissioning of EVMs was going on in my constituency. We saw the name of BJP clearly written under its lotus symbol. My party people pointed this out and we requested the returning officer to stop the commissioning. “We approached the state election body also. But the CEO could not take a decision saying elections are
already going on,” he said. Meanwhile, EC in a letter to the chief electoral officer of West Bengal, said that it received a complaint regarding the use of party’s name in ballot and that the same symbol was used by the BJP in the 2014 elections. “There is nothing to suggest that it reflects the name of the party,” the EC letter said.
EC hesitant to act against PM, says Chidambaram
Election Commission of India (EC) has been soft on monitoring the electoral expenditure limits of campaign rallies addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram asserted on Saturday. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai before the fourth phase of polling for Lok Sabha, he contended that the EC had failed to fulfil its duties of being bipartisan and was reluctant to take action against Modi for his speeches and expenditurerelated violations. Claiming that the spending on several rallies of the Prime Minister had likely crossed the Rs.10 crore

On April 22, Nagaland chief secretary Temjen Toy had also directed the DGP to review the preparedness in case a similar incident happens in Nagaland. Directive was also issued to prepare an action plan to sensitize the public on preventive measures. Security has also been stepped up in sensitive locations in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru, and Goa, which is a major tourist destination, as a precautionary measure. According to reports, additional security arrangements in churches and other major religious sites have been made across the country.

A d ay a f t e r M o d i claimed that the Congress would be decimated to below 50 seats, Chidambaram said feedback after the first three phases of voting in 303 constituencies indicated that the party had gained significantly. The voters had rejected the ‘false narrative’ of the BJP, he averred. “He (Modi) dreams even when he is sleeping, and even when he is awake. We cannot stop him from doing so,’’ he said, adding that as a single party Congress was level with the BJP.
Defamation case: Bihar court summons Rahul
PATNA, APR 27 (PTI): A court here Saturday directed Congress president Rahul Gandhi to appear in person next month in connection with a defamation suit filed against him by Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi. Chief Judicial Magistrate Shashikant Roy passed the order taking cognizance of the allegations made by the deputy chief minister, who had taken exception to Gandhi’s remark “all thieves have the surname Modi” at a political rally. The Congress president had made the remarks in Kollar district of Karnataka seeking to underscore the alleged laxity of the Narendra Modi government in pursuing corruption cases against diamaintaire Nirav Modi and former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi, both of whom have fled the country. On Friday, the Bihar deputy CM appeared before the court alleging that since he shared the same surname, he felt humiliated and ridiculed by the Congress chief ’s remark and that it was tantamount to defamation.
Political leaders raise pitch as campaigning ends for 4th phase NEW DELHI, APR 27 (AGENCIES): On the last day of campaigning for the 4th phase of the Lok Sabha elections, leaders across the spectrum made a strong pitch to woo voters. While Prime Minister Modi campaigned in Uttar Pradesh unleashing a strong attack on the Mahagathbandhan, BJP president Amit Shah spearheaded the campaign in Jharkhand and Odisha. The opposition also went all out with Congress president Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka leading the charge in Uttar Pradesh. Trinamool chief Mamata and other opposition leaders also campaigned aggressively. M od i : A dd r e ssing election rallies in Kannauj, Hardoi and Sitapur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi slammed the SP-BSP-RLD alliance in Uttar Pradesh. Dubbing the alliance as ‘mahamilavati (highly adulterated) opportunists’, Modi said in Kannauj that he doesn’t believe in politics of caste. Later in Hardoi, he slammed the Congress, blaming it for showing scant regard for Babasaheb Bhim-
Gandhi also assured the people that implementing the minimum income guarantee scheme, Nyay, was possible. Rahul Gandhi also accused Modi of not wanting to fill 22 lakh vacant government posts. Priyanka: Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi filed his nomination seeking re-election from Varanasi, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Saturday accused him of not visiting a single village there. “The prime minister travels across the globe, undertakes boat rides in Varanasi, but he has not visited the villages in his parliamentary constituency,” she said during a roadshow in favour of Congress’ Unnao candidate Annu Tandon. Mamata: West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee Saturday came down heavily on BJP calling it “the greatest danger for the country like 440 volts”. People should reject BJP and should refrain from casting any vote in favour of the party, she said at poll meetings in Hooghly and Howrah districts during the day.
NDPP slams NPF, Cong’s ‘communal’ remark Suspended IAS officer to DIMAPUR, APR 27 (NPN): Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDDP) Saturday slammed the opposition Naga People’s Front (NPF) and the Congress for terming NDPP as “communal” and “non-secular and reminding how the present stand of both parties contradicted with their past associations with BJP. Responding to NPF and Congress, NDPP central secretary (CEB) Paul Angami termed the accusations as “totally absurd and questionable”. He took a dig at the opposition NPF of “double standard”, in having had alliance with BJP for many years and the Congress for joining the then T.R. Zeliang-led DAN government where BJP was coalition partner to form “ an opposition-less government”. NDPP also slammed NPF for its “double speak”,
as clearly evident when the party condemned NDPP for its alliance with the BJP in Nagaland but on the other hand, NPF continued with its alliance with the BJP in Manipur. NDPP also pointed out that the NPF party president, when asked about his party’s alliance with BJP in Manipur, claimed that it was “in the interest of the Naga peace process.” If that was so, NDPP asked whether NDPP alliance with BJP was also not in the interest of Naga peace process? “It is evident by these facts that the NPF and the Congress has lost their political decorum. Had they been responsible political parties, they should have challenged the NDPP-led PDA government on developmental grounds, instead of playing the religious card to garner votes,” Paul stated. (Full text on p-6) Earlier, NDPP had
demanded a public apology from NPCC president K. Therie for making an oblique reference to chief minister Neiphiu Rio by stating that “We have a leader who believes in engineering defections by offering huge gratification to stick to the chair at all costs. He is responsible for the sins and defacing Nagaland for Christ”. It asked the NPCC president to clarify publicly as to what he meant by “huge gratification” and on what grounds does he allege that the chief minister has “defaced Nagaland for Christ”. These are very serious allegations levelled against the highest office in the State and the person responsible for making these “immature utterances” will and should be held responsible if he cannot provide the necessary proof for making such allegations, the statement added.
Dengue now a year round phenomenon: experts NEW DELHI, APR 27 (AGENCIES): Dengue is no longer confined only to the monsoon season and sporadic cases of the disease have been noted during summer as well. Delhi has so far recorded 650 cases of dengue already this year and experts claim that at least 50 cases have been recorded in every city. Dengue caused in the summer is attributed to the storage of water in water coolers and also to keeping water in containers for birds and other animals to drink during the summer. “Travelling to foreign regions with high humidity and rain showers is also found to cause the transfer of virus from foreign regions to our country,” explained Dr Farhan Shaikh, an expert on the management of dengue and pediatric critical care. Dengue outbreak during the summer is sporadic
rao Ambedkar and pointed out that his government has dedicated cashless payments app BHIM in his name. Modi wrapped his day-long visit to UP with a public meeting in Sitapur. Amit Shah: BJP president Amit Shah Saturday slammed the UPA government, alleging that former prime minister Manmohan Singh kept “silent” when terrorists from Pakistan beheaded Indian soldiers. “But, now for every bullet fired from across the border, the response is given with double the force,” he told a rally in Jharkhand’s Daltonganj town. In Odisha, BJP chief accused Congress leaders of advocating soft approach towards separatists. Rahul Gandhi: Hitting back at Prime Minister Modi for accusing the Congress of doing “nothing” while in power, party president Rahul Gandhi said Saturday nobody had committed the “foolishness” of demonetisation and the “Gabbar Singh Tax” in the last 70 years. Addressing rallies in Raebareli and Amethi constituencies of Uttar Pradesh,
in nature and not endemic as is seen during the monsoon season. Even though majority cases are noted during monsoons, dengue has pretty much become a year-round phenomenon. Climate change does not play a major role in this. Storing water and then leaving it unattended is what allows mosquitoes the environment to breed. Water in urban tanks, pot trays, drinking water bowls for animals and birds, etc. make for perfect breeding op-
portunities for mosquitoes. It is essential to practice the weekly dry day and ensure that all containers and trays are properly dried. That is the best method of prevention. Mutation causes the nature of the virus to change every year. So while the virus might affect the brain in majority cases through one particular year, it can affect the liver in majority cases through another cycle or cause more hemorrhages through another cycle. Hence, it depends on the virus and the ability of the practicing physician to identify the trend and accordingly administer treatment. Diagnosis of the other organs of the body also becomes important to ensure that there is not much damage. 95 per cent of dengue cases can be managed at home, however only if the patient visits the physician
at the right time and follows their advice in terms of medication and rest. Dengue management is symptomatic and requires proper treatment, sufficient fluid intake, and a fair amount of rest. However, if signs like persistent fever, drowsiness, and bleeding are noticed, then hospitalization becomes critical to ensure complete care primarily because the virus is found to affect other organs as well and that requires experts to come together to manage the disease. One needs to prevent mosquitoes from biting them to prevent the disease. Wearing long sleeves and long pants, using EPA registered mosquito repellants, using a mosquito net, and avoiding areas with standing water during mornings and evenings can greatly reduce the likelihood of occurrence of the disease.

MUMBAI, APR 27 (AGENCIES): Suspended IAS officer Mohammed Mohsin said he had not violated any rules and was unaware of the charges against him. Mohsin who was suspended by Election Commission on April 16 for checking the chopper of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said, “I acted strictly as per the letter and spirit of the ECI guidelines. I have not violated any rules and I have not done anything wrong. This is why I asked for a copy of the report against me, but they have so far not shared this. Saying that he was not at the spot when the incident happened and was not aware of what happened at the helipad, Mohsin claimed he had only read media reports, which he can neither con-
firm nor deny. Narrating the event, Mohsin said he had visited the helipad where the chopper of Prime Minister was parked. As per his duty as an observer, he advised the team and left the place. Then he went to the venue of the function and sat in the police control room. There he was joined by the collector. He said, when he was sitting in the DC’s office, he got a call from the Deputy CEC asking if he had ordered for frisking to be carried out, which Mohsin denied. All of a sudden he was suspended at around 11.30 p.m. Announcing that he would fight in the court of law, Mohsin said “I am a career bureaucrat with 22 years of service. I don’t belong to any party. I go by rules.” Though EC revoked his suspension, it recommended the state government to carry out disciplinary action against Mohsin.
