Modi holds Varanasi road show

LU C K N OW, A P R 2 5 (IANS/AGENCIES): Cheered on by a massive crowd, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a mega road show in Varanasi, a day before he filed his nomination papers for a second term in the Lok Sabha. Huge crowds turned out to cheer the Prime Minister who was symbolically dressed in a saffron kurta and ‘angavastram’. Modi began his journey from the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) where he paid tributes to the statue of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya and culminated at the Dashashwamedh Ghat where he held a ‘puja’ and attended the ‘Ganga pujan’ after the Ganga ‘aarti’ which had been delayed. Top BJP leaders, including party president Amit Shah, top Union Ministers and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, accompanied Modi as the convoy moved though the holy town. Asserting that his commitment was to “India first”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said his government had given a response to terrorists “in their own language”, in a reference to Balakot airstrike.

Fuel prices hiked after 3-day hiatus NEW DELHI, APR 25 (AGENCIES): Petrol and diesel prices were revised after three days of no change in rates. The prices of petrol and diesel, reviewed on a daily basis in tandem with global crude oil, were hiked in the range of 7-9 paise per litre in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai on Thursday, according to notifications from Indian Oil Corporation. Currently, any revisions in the domestic fuel prices are effected at the pumps by state-run oil marketing companies at 6 am. The price of petrol in Delhi was at Rs. 73.02 per litre while that of diesel was at Rs. 66.54 per litre on Thursday. In Mumbai, the prices of petrol and diesel were at Rs. 78.59 per litre and Rs. 69.65 per litre respectively, according to Indian Oil Corporation. In Dimapur, petrol and diesel were selling for Rs. 70.63 a litre and Rs. 63.96 per litre while in the state capital a litre of petrol and diesel was Rs. 71.45 and Rs. 64.59 respectively. It may be mentioned that fuel price in the country is dependent on the global crude prices and the rupee-US dollar exchange rate as India imports 80 per cent of its crude requirements.

The show of strength, incidentally, took place on a day when the Congress put to rest all speculation about Priyanka Gandhi Vadra contesting from Varanasi and announced the candidature of Ajay Rai as the party nominee. Congress on Thursday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s roadshow was aimed at covering up his failure of fulfilling the promises made to the people there and demanded that he should apologise for “betraying” them.

Oppn puts ECI under scanner Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati Thursday accused Election Commission of India (ECI) of ignoring the alleged model code violations by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “PM Modi is moving freely without care despite facing numerous serious allegations of the Model Code of Conduct violation, thanks to the ECI…” Mayawati tweeted on Thursday morning. Earlier, NCP president Sharad Pawar and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu had also hit out at the Election Commission, with the latter asking if the model code of conduct was separate for the prime minister on one hand and chief ministers on the other. Naidu said, “Is it for the first time (that the prime minister has violated the model code of conduct)? Everyday there is a violation (on Modi’s part).”

RD deptt clarifies on MGNREGA fund DIMAPUR, APR 25 (NPN): A day after Nagaland Public Rights Awareness and Action Forum (NPRAAF) questioned the government order directing all project directors/BDOs to freeze bank accounts of all job card holders under MGNREGA, the rural development (RD) department clarified that direct benefit transfer cannot be implemented for MGNREGA without “freezing” accounts in the NREGA-Soft MIS. In a press note, secretary & commissioner (MGNREGA) Neposo Theluo explained that DBT under MGNREGA was done through Electronic Fund Management System (eFMS) using NREGA-Soft MIS. To enable DBT, Theluo said every worker under MGNREGA must have bank account which should be registered in the MIS. After registering the accounts, he said respective BDO would check and verify the

accounts and if the BDO was satisfied with the authenticity of the Accounts, the BDO must “Freeze” the Accounts in the system (MIS). When the accounts are frozen by the BDO no changes can be made in the Accounts, Theluo said, adding that only after the accounts are “Frozen”, DBT is enabled. “This procedure is universal throughout the country,” he said. Secretary & commis-

sioner said RD department has put extra effort in opening bank accounts for the MGNREGA workers despite so many hurdles. The secretary & commissioner informed that at present a total of 173075 bank accounts have been opened for MGNREGA workers in various banks throughout the State. Out of the total accounts opened, Theluo said only 32637 accounts have been verified and frozen. (Cont’d on p-7)

NPRAAF reacts to clarification

NPRAAF has termed as “untrue and defamatory” the RD department’s accusation that the forum was “confusing the public without verifying the fact”. In a statement, NPRAAF info and publicity wing described the department’s clarification as “just a face saving act.” NPRAAF stated that its panel of expert committee were well conversant with MGNREGA and other flagships schemes implementation. The forum stated that the order to freeze bank account was clear, adding that a copy was also made available to the media and not as attributed in department’s clarification. NPRAAF, however, asserted that it would “follow the action of the government strict implementation of MGNREGA” for the greater interest of beneficiaries. It also hoped that funds were not misused.

Clean chit to Patton ‘insult’ to people: NPCC

DIMAPUR, APR 25 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has termed the clean chit given to alleged misdeeds of deputy chief minister Y Patton by State BJP president Temjen Imna Along as an insult to all right-thinking citizens of Nagaland and total disregard to the rule of law. According to the party, the arrogance of power has gone into the heads of BJP leaders and they feel that public are idiots and can be taken for a ride. In a statement issued by its communication department, NPCC said blatant doublespeak of BJP president was evident

when he apologised for Patton wearing a BJP scarf in the same video where he was also seen casting multiple votes, which he stoutly denied. His apology, therefore, puts the genuineness of video beyond doubt, it added. Since an FIR has already been lodged at Wokha police station, the party reminded State BJP leaders not to jump the gun or interfere in the process of investigation as it will not remain a silent spectator to their arrogance and misdeeds. NPCC also termed Along’s assertion that Article 371(A) will protect Nagas from CAB as contradictory (Cont’d on p-7) to his “naive belief ”.
