Assam in dire need of more doctors, nurses
GUWAHATI, Apr 25 (Agencies): The state healthcare depar tment would be in serious need of more doctors to tackle the growing number of diseases, including the lifethreatening ones, afflicting the people. According to the department, Assam would be requiring 7,132 (regular and National Health Mission) allopathic doctors and specialists by 2019-20, 8,262 by 2023-24 and 8,918 by 2030-31. Currently, the state has 3,188 functioning doctors and specialists working in the public health sector. This was revealed d u r i n g a c o n c l ave o n Monday on sustainable development goals (SDG) for health, water and sanitation. The SDG was formulated by the UN General Assembly for a global development vision agenda. The objective of the conclave was to address
issues like maternal mortality rate (MMR), under-five mortality rate, to end the epidemic of AIDS, TB, malaria, neglected tropical diseases and to combat Hepatitis, waterborne diseases and other communicable ailments. From the existing six medical colleges in the state, Assam needs to build 27 medical colleges by 203031, 12 by 2023-31 and 9 by 2019-20 based on the Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS) norms. Assam is the first state in the country to initiate the process of taking the SDG agenda forward for which it is developing a draft strategy paper and action plan (SPAP) to achieve the SDG targets. Senior officials from the state health department told TOI that as of now the emphasis should be on facilitation of more medical colleges, production of more doctors, recruitment
of medical practitioners through proper recruitment processes and deployment of medical exper ts in inaccessible areas. “The state government has already expedited the processes of creating more doctors and medical practitioners. It has already incorporated the establishment of more medical colleges in the budget. The approach is based on a needful sustainable mechanism. The need of the hour is how to integrate the SDG-3 agenda into existing policies and plans,” said Samir K Sinha, commissioner and secretary, health and family welfare department. Besides the requirement of allopathic doctors, the state will also have to witness the requirement of 10,148 staff nurses by 2019-20, 11,528 by 202324, 12,332 by 2030-31 from the existing 4,257 nurses (regular and NHM).
northeast Man kills boy suspecting him to be a ghost N a g a o n, A p r 2 5 (PTI): A three-year old boy died after he was severely beaten up by a person suspecting him to be a ‘ghost’ in Nagaon district of lower Assam, the police said today. The boy was standing alone on the road at Sarudal Basti of Salna within the limits of Samaguri police station last night waiting for his father who had gone to escort his mother back home after visiting someone’s house in the village, the police said. Seeing him alone on the roadside, one Lakhman Thakur, who was passing passing by on a motorcycle, thought him to be a ghost and severely beat him till he died, they said. Angered by the incident, local residents also beat up Lakhman and grievously injured him. The man has been admitted to BP Civil Hospital in Nagaon, the police said adding, he will be arrested when he recovers.

I have faced a lot of racial abuse, says Mizoram CM Aizawl, Apr 25 (IANS): Lashing out racial abuse faced by northeastern people in major Indian cities, Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla says he himself was a victim of such slurs in various corners of the country. “Racial abuse is the worst thing in this country. I have faced it myself a lot of times. These are foolish people who do not know their own country,” the 74year-old Chief Minister told IANS in an interview. “In a reception some 2 0 - 2 5 ye a r s a g o, o n e gentleman said to me ‘You don’t look like an Indian’ to which I replied?: ‘Tell me in one sentence what does an Indian look like?’ “ The five-time Chief Minister said it is not only the common people but politicians at the national level who do not have a basic idea of India. “Even the national leadership, be it the BJP or the Congress or any political party, if you do not know your own country, how can you be a leader? Many of these national
leaders do not know about their own country, which is very, very foolish. It speaks about the lack of education and patriotism. It speaks about their feeling of having a superior mentality,” he added. The Congress veteran further said such abuses and step-motherly treatment towards the people of a par ticular region gives birth to regionalism and secessionism. “They don’t even know that India is populated by at least three major races of the world. Recently someone from Madhya Pradesh said the Dravidians (South Indian) people are very black, they don’t realise that Northern India is populated by Aryans and in the North East it is the Mongoloid people.” “That is why in the northeast, this regionalism is ver y high. (Feelings of) Secessionism (sic) is very high because we are not accepted outside the northeast. This is how socalled Indian people treat us,” he added.

one of its closely guarded secrets. Researchers have stumbled up an almost blind, albino crab that had

6 arrested for rhino poaching
JORHAT, Apr 25 (Agencies): Kaziranga forest staff and police arrested six persons from a nearby village in the park on Monday on charges of their involvement in rhino poaching. Members of the forest staff seized 10 rounds of live ammunition of .303 rifle from them. “Acting on a tip-off, a joint operation of police and forest staff was launched at the Bohikhuwa village in Agoratoli on Monday afternoon. Six persons were detained for interrogation. We also seized ten rounds live ammunitions of .303 rifle from their possession,” said divisional forest officer (Kaziranga) Rohini Saikia. Kaziranga lost a rhino last week, whose carcass was found near the Sibe anti-poaching camp under the Agoratoli forest range on Saturday. The rhino’s horn was missing and forest officials found an empty cartridge of .303 rifles at the spot. The body was found in a decomposed state, having been killed three to four days before it was found.
Only 20% Bodos wants separate Bodoland: Sarania Guwahati, Apr 25 ( A g e nci e s ) : I n a shocking revelation, Lok Sabha MP Naba Sarania on Tuesday disclosed that non-Bodo organizations in the BTAD have joined hands together to secure the rights of the non-Bodos. “Only 20 percent of people in BTAD are demanding for a separate state, contrary to which 80 percent inhabitants of BTAD never want a separate Bodoland state,” he said. Sarania further warned that he would never let happen formation of a separate Bodoland and would continue with his efforts in this regard.

GUWAHATI, Apr 25 (Agencies): Three persons of a groom party died in a road accident at the Agiathuri area on the northern banks of the Brahmaputra here on Monday. One person has been seriously injured. Eye-witnesses said the speeding vehicle carrying the groom party lost control and collided head-on with a dumper parked beside the road. “The deceased were identified as Marmeshwar Medhi, Biswajit Kalita and Bikas Kakoty. They were returning from a marriage party from Sualkuchi,” police said. In a similar incident, five persons sustained serious injuries when another marriage party vehicle met with an accident at Baksa district’s Baganpara area on Sunday night. In yet another incident, Assamese singer Mausam Gogoi had a narrow escape after the vehicle he was travelling in turned turtle at Dharamtul in Nagaon late on Sunday night.

IMPHAL, Apr 25: Ahead of Prime Minister’s scheduled review meeting, state works minister Th Biswajit inspected the progress of road improvement works of NH-37. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to hold a video conferencing with officials of Manipur government to review the improvement work being taken up along Imphal-Jiribam section of NH-37 on Wednesday. Even as the improvement work of the highway was included a m o n g t h e 1 0 0 d ay s programme of the BJPled NDA gover nment in 2014, Border Road Organisation (BRO) failed to make any headway. Now, the highway has been handed over to National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and since then the improvement works was on hectic efforts to complete by the current month April.
