DIMAPUR, APR 24 (NPN): Reacting to the “excommunication” notice issued by the Ao Senden, Naga Hoho (NH) president, P. Chuba Ozukum said he was constrained to issue a statement with a view to set the record straight, while stating that he was fully prepared to accept the decision of Senden. NEW DELHI, APR 24 (AGENCIES): India’s Animal Right Organisation PETA on Monday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ban meat from serving at all government or government-sponsored meetings and functions. According to ANI report, the group asked the government to take cue from German environment minister Barbara Hendricks who banned meat from being served at her ministry’s meetings and events. It said that the meat production is one of the leading causes of climate change. Quoting a report published by the Worldwatch Institute in 2009, it said that 51 per cent of worldwide greenhouse-gas emissions may be attributable to agriculture, specifically to businesses that

raise cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, camels, and pigs for food. “Raising animals for food also gobbles up land and food resources. According to Global Footprint Network, it takes 14 times as much biologically productive land to produce 1 tonne of beef as it does to produce 1 tonne of grain,” it said. “I hope you’ll agree that India should also set a good example where environmental conservation is concerned by eliminating animal-derived foods from the menus of all government or government-sponsored meetings and functions,” it added. The organisation said, “It’s time for the entire Indian government to follow your lead and protect the environment by eliminating animal-derived foods from its meals.”

Centre committed to grant ST status to 6 Assam communities

New Delhi, Apr 24 (PTI): The central government is committed to grant ST status to six communities in Assam and it is working in this direction, Union minister Kiren Rijiju said Monday. He said this at a tripartite meeting with representatives of the six communities and Assam government held at North block here. “We are committed to grant ST status to six OBC communities in Assam. The central government has already set up a committee to examine the proposal and it is working on it,” he told the meeting. Granting of Scheduled Tribes status to the six communities - Moran, Muttock, Tai Ahom, Koch-Rajbongshi, Sootea and Tea Tribes - was a political promise of the BJP. The BJP-led alliance had assumed power in Assam last year. The pro-talks faction of ULFA too had been seeking ST status to the six communities of Assam. The modality commit-

tee, headed by Special Secretary (Internal Security) in the Home Ministry, Rina Mitra is consulting the Assam government and all other stake-holders. It is examining various issues for suggesting the modalities for the required reservations and shifting the existing reservation for these communities from OBC to ST. The committee will submit its report on June 30 and the central government is expected to move further on the basis of its recommendations. The committee is also looking into that the interests of existing tribal communities is ensured and a mechanism is framed to ensure fairness of reservations within these six communities and related security considerations, a Home Ministry official said. The grant of tribal status to these six communities will lead to 50 per cent population of Assam becoming tribal or Assam turning into a tribal-dominated state.

of the state,” Khandu told Goyal. Khandu also asked the Power ministry to fast track he Khuppi-BomdilaTawang 132 KV Transmission Line and BomdilaKalaktang 132 KV Transmission Line in which the Union Power minister directed the chairman and maanging director of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd to start implementation of work of this line over the next few months. The Chief Minister also raised the issue of providing local employment for the youth of Arunachal Pradesh in Hydro Power Project being implemented by government-owned North East Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO). To this, Goyal directed CMD NEEPCO to visit Arunachal Pradesh and discuss with the Chief Minister on the demands

of local youth for employment. On the issue of establishing a Centre of Hydro Power Excellence to build Local engineering capabilities for project preparation in Arunachal, Union Minister Power agreed to support this project and house it in North East Regional Institute of Science and Technology. Union Minister Power impressed on the need for 100% consumer metering to cut down losses and even offered to Finance this initiative completely. While informing that Kameng (600 MW) and Pare (110 MW) hydropower projects are scheduled to be commissioned this year after much delay, Khandu requested Goyal to firmly advise NEEPCO to complete these two projects this year only without further delay. “Apparently, Kameng has been pro-

jected for completion for January 2018 and Pare by December 2017. NEEPCO authorities are indicating slippage of timelines again by a few months”, Khandu said while asking the Union Minister to issue a firm direction to the PSU to respect the given deadline and time frame. While requesting the ministry to expedite the proposals of Rs 83.32 crores which has been submitted for gap funding of incomplete projects under Prime Minister package in border villages totaling to nearly 30 MW capacity and for financial support of Rs 580.89 crores submitted to MNRE for 64 micro mini and small hydro projects with a capacity of 27.7 MW, Khandu justified that these proposals are meant for border villages illumination and therefore need to be accorded positive priority.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur Tuesday, april 25, 2017

PDP leader shot dead amid clashes in Srinagar Srinagar/New Delhi, APR 24 (AGENCIES/ IANS): Militants shot dead Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Gani Dar on Monday amid mounting tension and clashes between civilians and security forces in Kashmir. Pulwama superintendent of police Rayees Mohammad Bhat told HT Dar -- Pulwama unit president of the state’s ruling party -was travelling in a car when motorcyle-borne militants opened fire on him and escaped. The critically injured leader was shifted to Srinagar’s SMHS hospital and died on the way. Medical superintendent of SMHS hospital, Dr Nazir Chowdary, said, “The person was brought dead. He is no more.” He was hit with multiple bullets in his chest, a source said. The attack came just hours after Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and pressed for a dialogue with separatists in the state. Mufti, who is under pressure in the face of fresh street protests in Kashmir, briefed Modi on the prevailing situation and the way forward. Earlier this month, advocate Imtiyaz Ahmad Khan, who was associated

wit the National Conference, was shot dead at Pinjoora in Shopian district of South Kashmir. Moreover, last week, a grainy short video had emerged showing Wali Mohammed Bhat, a supporter of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), apologising profusely and shouting anti-India slogans at gunpoint. Kashmir has been rocked by massive street protests in recent months, especially after eight people were killed during an assembly election bypoll in Srinagar that saw the lowest turnout in decades. Several leaders of the PDP have expressed fear that their base in Kashmir is fast eroding because of the party’s alliance with BJP and its stance on the protests. The attack on the PDP leader came on the day fresh clashes broke out between protesters and security forces at SP College in Srinagar, police said. No casualties were reported in the incident. Police said some students indulged in stonepelting, and police and security forces used batons to chase them away. Colleges opened in Kashmir on Monday after a gap of five days as authorities shut higher education institutes in the wake of Valley-wide student protests last Monday against

Abdul Gani Dar alleged high-handedness of security forces with students in Pulwama.

Over a dozen policemen injured

At least fifteen policemen including three senior officers were injured on Monday in Srinagar during clashes between protesting students and security forces. Students of the S.P. College, S.P. Higher Secondary School and the Government College for Women clashed with the forces in the city’s Maulana Azad Road area after these institutions re-opened on Monday. “Fifteen policemen including the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Imtiyaz Hussain Parray, SP East (Srinagar) Sheikh Faisal, SubDivisional Police Officer (SDPO) Kothibagh, Imran are among the injured policemen”, a senior police officer said. Refusing to join classes, the students came out on the roads to block traf-

fic on the busy road. Police showed restraint while dealing with stone pelting students. Water canons were used to disperse the protesting students. Students brought down a brick wall inside the college campus and used the bricks to attack security forces. Police said many students managed to come out of the school and college premises engaging in more intense clashes with the police. “No pellet guns were used by the police to control the mob and this was done to avoid injuries to the protesting students,” the officer said. Tear smoke shells were used to quell the mob. Eye-witnesses said a motorcycle pillion rider was also hit by a brick hurled by the students. The injured person was shifted to hospital for treatment. Markets in the Residency Road area and the city centre Lal Chowk were shut following the clashes. The situation was controlled after six hours, police said. Authorities had opened universities, colleges and higher secondary schools in the Kashmir Valley after over a week on Monday.

in Jammu and Kashmir amid continued unrest in the Kashmir Valley. Home Minister Rajnath Singh was given a detailed presentation on the latest ground situation in the state in the wake of violence since the April 9 bypoll to the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency, official sources said. They discussed the steps taken to bring back normalcy in the Valley, which has witnessed many protests and stone- pelting incidents in the recent past. Singh discussed increased infiltration bids from across the border with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and the top officials of the Home ministry, the paramilitary forces and the chiefs of the intelligence agencies. The home minister directed the officials to ensure intensified vigil along the International Border and the Line of Control to foil attempts by the militants to sneak into Jammu and Kashmir during the summer, the sources said. A possible strategy to deal with the challenges arising out of the increasing incidents of stone pelting on the security personnel was also discussed at the meeting, they said. The man, Indrajit Dutt, 50, who claimed he was an engineer, was jobless for seven years, said police. His wife, Dr Jasmine Patel, 45, ran a clinic near her house. Patel could not go to the clinic for four months owing to health ailments, said police. PS Bhatuse, sub-inspector, Kamothe police station, said, “The rent for the clinic was Rs10,000 a month, and the house Rs14,500 a month. They owed the owner of the clinic Rs2 lakh in rent, and had not paid the house rent for the past three months. Their contract got over on March 31, but they managed to request the landlord to allow them to stay for a few days.” Their 15-year-old daughter, Oshin, had quit studies. “We are not sure if she had a learning disability. We think she may have quit school over financial mess,” said Bhatuse. “We didn’t see her go to school. The family kept to themselves,” said Ravindra Srinivash Shetyam, chairman of the society. The police have traced Patel’s nephew to Madhya Pradesh. “We will get to know if the girl was the man’s daughter only after the family reaches the city on Tuesday,” the officer said.

Lt Kulbhushan Parashar NEW DELHI, APR 24 (AGENCIES): A special court has allowed a former navy officer, facing trial in the 2006 Naval War Room leak case, to go abroad for 25 days but asked him not travel to London where prime accused Ravi Shankaran, who has been absconding, is learnt to be living. Special CBI Judge Sanjeev Aggarwal granted the relief to ex-naval lieutenant Kulbhushan Parashar who sought permission to travel to several countries including France, Spain, Czech Republic, Russia and Greece from June 4 to July 1 for meetings and exploring business opportunities relating to food imports. The court said Parashar will not be permitted to stay abroad beyond the permitted time and shall not seek extension on any ground,

including medical. The 2006 Navy War Room leak case involves leakage of over 7,000 pages of sensitive defence information from the Naval War Room and the Air Headquarters, having a direct bearing on national security. “He shall not contact any witnesses while abroad, he will not object to the examination of witnesses in his absence and in his absence, his counsel will accept all the notices on his behalf. “It is also made clear that accused/applicant shall not travel to London, UK during this period where accused Ravi Shankaran (proclaimed offender in the case who is absconding), is stated to be residing”, the judge said in the order. The CBI had opposed the plea, saying the case was at the stage of recording prosecution evidence and the trial was being expedited. It had also alleged that there was a strong suspicion that Prashar may not return to India, which could delay the proceedings. It had said that Shankaran was residing in London and there were chances of Parashar fleeing from justice. Parashar is facing trial along with four accused, including three former Naval officers.

India is fifth largest military spender: SIPRI Bihar adopts GST; Nitish Cabinet Sinha gets one calls it ‘a historic moment’ year extension Houses were prorogued on March 31 in anticipation of passing of GST in Parliament and its coming to the state for the same. Leader of opposition in legislative council Sushil Kumar Modi, who had headed a ministerial committee on GST during NDA rule in Bihar, expressed happiness over adoption of GST related bills with the help of all the parties. He expressed thanks to chief minister Nitish Kumar for standing in favour of GST from the beginning. “On his advise, I had accepted chairmanship of GST as finance minister of the state during NDA rule,” the senior BJP leader said. In the legislative assembly, bills related to GST were taken up in pre-lunch session and with ruling JD(U), RJD, Congress and even opposition BJP and its NDA partners in support of GST bill, it was adopted through voice vote. Commercial Tax minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav had moved the Bihar Goods and Service Bill, 2017 and the Bihar Taxation (Amendment) bill, 2017. While all

the major parties were in favour of GST, JD(U), BJP and Congress tried to score over each other in taking credit in state Legislative Assembly over it. Sushil Modi praised Nitish Kumar for continuously being in support of GST even when BJP was opposed to it when he was heading a NDA ministry in Bihar. “A statesman looks for good of next generation while a politician merely looks for next election while taking decision on such issues,” Yadav said in praise of Kumar. Leader of Opposition in Assembly Prem Kumar lauded the prime minister for the historic GST legislation which he said would help in checking corruption and increase investment.

“The growth in US military expenditure in 2016 may signal the end of a trend of decreases in spending, which resulted from the economic crisis and the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan and Iraq,” the report said. US spending last year remained 20% lower than its peak in 2010. “Despite continuing legal restraints on the overall US budget, increases in military spending were agreed upon by Congress,” said Aude Fleurant, director of the SIPRI Arms and Military Expenditure (AMEX) programme. Military expenditure in Western Europe rose by 2.6% in 2016 and experts said this was linked to growing threat perceptions. There were spending increases in all but three countries in the region. Italy recorded the highest increase, with spending rising by 11%.

The SIPRI report also said military spending in North America saw its first annual increase since 2010, while spending in Western Europe grew for the second consecutive year. Global military expenditure rose for a second consecutive year to a total of $1686 billion, marking the first consecutive annual increase since 2011, when spending reached a peak of $1,699 billion. The report said spending continued to grow in Asia and Oceania, Central and Eastern Europe and North Africa. By contrast, spending fell in Central America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, South America and sub-Saharan Africa.

Total global military expenditure in 2016 rose by 0.4% over 2015 in real terms, according to the new figures from SIPRI. In February, India hiked its allocation for defence in 2017-18 by 6% to Rs 2.74 lakh crore, including Rs 86,488 crore for modernisation. However, experts said the modest increase could hurt the military’s modernisation plans, crucial to keeping up with China’s expanding might. India’s military spending has averaged an annual increase of 10% during the past three years, much to the disappointment of the military that is struggling to scale up its capabilities. Ghost of Babri

fter a 25-year-long wait, the Babri Masjid demolition case is finally witnessing some progress after the Supreme Court Bench comprising of comprised Justices PC Ghose and RF Nariman- ruled that senior BJP leaders Lal Krishna Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharti among others will face conspiracy charges in the case. The maximum punishment that L K Advani and other Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders can face is five years in jail.Babri Masjid, a 16th century mosque, was demolished by kar sevaks on December 6, 1992 when Kalyan Singh was chief minister. He is also among the accused but enjoys constitutional immunity since he is Governor of Haryana and will only be prosecuted after his gubernatorial term ends. Reacting to the development, Congress spokesperson Salman Soz said Uma Bharti and Kalyan Singh should resign and uphold the sanctity of their posts. There were two sets of cases relating to the demolition of the disputed structure on December 6, 1992. The first involved unnamed ‘karsevaks’ or volunteers, the trial of which is taking place in a Lucknow court, while the second set of cases relate to the VVIPs in a Rae Bareli court. With today’s SC order, both these cases are merged and will be heard in Lucknow. The apex court has directed the sessions judge in Lucknow to conduct the trial in the Babri demolition case on a daily basis, and that the judge will not be transferred. It also ruled out a fresh trial in the case. The Supreme Court has also ordered the CBI to ensure that witnesses are produced in court everyday so that there is no delay in the Babri demolition case trial. The trial will have to be completed in two years. This means that Advani and others would be tied down to the case till the final judgement. The CBI had booked several BJP leaders including Advani, Joshi, Uma Bharti, Kalyan Singh and Vinay Katiyar but they were freed by a court in Raebareli of conspiracy charges. In 2010, the Allahabad High Court confirmed this decision. By ruling in favour of the CBI plea, the Supreme Court in effect also set aside the judgement of the Allahabad High Court which threw aside conspiracy charges against Advani and the BJP leaders. Lalu Prasad Yadav alleged that the CBI’s unusual doggedness to implicate senior BJP leaders had the blessings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The conspiracy theory says that Modi did not want to make Advani as the next president and so with the case taking on a serious trials, there would be no chance for Advani to make the bid. However, a sense of sympathy prevailed within the BJP for Advani and other sidelined leaders. In particular, Advani is being seen as the scapegoat for a movement that had the blessing of the entire party. However, party insiders agreed that the Supreme Court verdict could breathe new life into the Ram temple issue which has already started gathering some steam after BJP’s big victory in Uttar Pradesh, and especially after Yogi Adityanath -- a product of the Ram temple movement. Even after being sidelined, Advani is still considered an alternative leader of the BJP by other opposition parties barring the Congress. Perhaps this angle drives some credibility to Lalu Prasad’s Modi conspiracy theory. For the case, it might just take another turn if the vow to construct the mandir at the disputed site explodes in UP.

DailyDevotion Do You Worship The Work? We are God’s fellow workers… —1 Corinthians 3:9 Beware of any work for God that causes or allows you to avoid concentrating on Him. A great number of Christian workers worship their work. The only concern of Christian workers should be their concentration on God. This will mean that all the other boundaries of life, whether they are mental, moral, or spiritual limits, are completely free with the freedom God gives His child; that is, a worshiping child, not a wayward one. A worker who lacks this serious controlling emphasis of concentration on God is apt to become overly burdened by his work. He is a slave to his own limits, having no freedom of his body, mind, or spirit. Consequently, he becomes burned out and defeated. There is no freedom and no delight in life at all. His nerves, mind, and heart are so overwhelmed that God’s blessing cannot rest on him. But the opposite case is equally true– once our concentration is on God, all the limits of our life are free and under the control and mastery of God alone. There is no longer any responsibility on you for the work. The only responsibility you have is to stay in living constant touch with God, and to see that you allow nothing to hinder your cooperation with Him. The freedom that comes after sanctification is the freedom of a child, and the things that used to hold your life down are gone. But be careful to remember that you have been freed for only one thing– to be absolutely devoted to your co-Worker. We have no right to decide where we should be placed, or to have preconceived ideas as to what God is preparing us to do. God engineers everything; and wherever He places us, our one supreme goal should be to pour out our lives in wholehearted devotion to Him in that particular work. “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might…” (Ecclesiastes 9:10).

It is better to know some of the questions than all of the answers. ~ James Thurber

L

ast week I received a frantic email from a teacher in Puducherry. The school principal had decided to remove all the beehives on the trees and cut down all the lower branches so that they would not get any more. The real culprits were two children who had thrown stones at the beehive and had been bitten. I spoke to the principal and explained that she should give a lecture to the school on the importance of beehives and ask children to stay away from them. There are so few bees left in India that we are on the brink of a major pollination crisis. Our lives, as we know them, are about to change – and yet the most important beings on the planet, bees, are not protected by law. Bees pollinate one sixth of the flowering plants all over the world, which feed insects and birds, and 400 different kinds of fruit/ food plants. Basically, one third of everything you eat. All of which will become extinct within five years if the bees disappear. And don’t let’s have any smart answers about “people can eat meat”, because the animals grown for meat also eat only plants so you will not have meat either. There are 25,000 different species of bees in

just 9 families, of which the Apidae family, with the honeybee, the bumble bee and the carpenter bee, is the most common. All bees have stiff hair and pockets on their legs, allowing them to collect more pollen and be more efficient transporters of it between plants. What is pollination? It is the transfer of pollen from the male part of the flower, the anther, to the stigma, which is the female part of the flower. When this happens, a plant’s seed, nut, or fruit is formed. Bees focus their energies on one species of plant at a time. By visiting the same flowers of a particular species in one outing, much higher quality pollination occurs – rather than spreading many different pollens to different plants, all plants of one species get an even distribution of vital pollen from others of its same species. The bees are disappearing for one major reason: the use of neonicotinoid pesticides. I have repeatedly asked the government to ban these, but they refuse because they need these terrible pesticides for the GM Cotton crops which Monsanto forced on India by promising that these cotton crops would not need any pesticides at all. This turned out to be a

Nagaland Post, Dimapur

Do not use insecticides lie – in fact, GM cotton needs many more vicious pesticides which are now killing off pollinators and people. The other reason is people getting rid of beehives, and trees being cut. This is where you need to step in. Honeybees live in groups and they work extremely hard to make their hive. The hive contains a queen bee who produces all the baby bees, thousands of workers who get all the pollen that makes the honey that feeds the babies. For the most part bees are totally harmless. If you ignore them they will ignore you, as they are far too busy with their own lives. After all, making one spoonful of honey requires thousands of round trips. If you have a hive in your vicinity you should be happy, because it means that everything around will get greener and there will be far more things to eat. Just letting the hive

be means that you are doing your bit for nature. In fact, if you have a hive in the vicinity, try and plant flowers or flowering trees so that they get more to eat. B u t i f yo u t h r ow stones at them, or shake the tree for no reason, then the bees get very agitated and may attack. They do this in desperation and fear to defend their babies and home. They may sting a group of people. But remember, the bee stinging is an act of suicide because the stinger is part of her abdomen and when she stings the stinger breaks away and she dies. So you have to do a provocation to get them to bite. If you absolutely have to remove the hive – which means destroying all the pollination of every flowering plant around 10 kilometres – then don’t burn it or smoke it, because thousands of larvae and the queen bee are destroyed. It will take several years for the workers to find a queen

and to regroup – if they live. Don’t spray it with a soap and water mixture. People spray all the plant around with vinegar so that the bees die while collecting pollen, but this is a totally rabid and anti- environmental thing to do as you lose all the plants, and these may not even be the ones the bees are feeding from. Do not use insecticides. The best way would be to encourage them to shift. This may take months, but at least you will not be murdering important beings – far more important than even you. You should make every effort to relocate honey bees instead of exterminating them. Here are some suggestions. Try them all. a) Hang some mothballs inside of an old nylon or thin sock close to the bee nest. b) Bees will often relocate to be closer to their food source and are attracted to strong, sweet smells. Cut soft, ripe pears or mangoes into chunks and place them into an open sandwich bag. Place this 15-20 feet away from the hive. After a few days, move the bait a few feet further away from the hive. Continue this process until the bees stop visiting the original location and have

set up a new hive closer to the bag. c) While bees are attracted to sweet smells, they are equally repulsed by pungent smells. One of the simplest methods to repel bees is to liberally sprinkle garlic powder in places where the bees congregate. They will start avoiding the area and slowly relocate. d) Citronella candles will not harm bees and they will avoid any areas containing the smell. This helps protect some areas if you have a hive in your yard, and may prove partially effective in forcing a colony to relocate if the candles are being burned close to the hive. e) Scatter a handful of cucumber peels as another natural form of repellent. The peels give off a scent that bees, and many other insects, find repulsive. If you have access to, and are expert in, beekeeping and beekeeping equipment, take the big hive clump into a cardboard box (queen included) and then transfer the bees into a hive super-box with some frames. This can be put a distance away in a wooded area and slowly the bees will start to relocate themselves. To join the animal welfare movement contact gandhim@nic.in, www. peopleforanimalsindia.org

I

P. Chuba Ozukum reacts to ex-communication notice

am constrained to issue this statement with a view to set the record straight and in regards to the press release issued by Ao Senden ex-communicating me from Ao community. While I am fully prepared to accept the decision of Ao Senden to ex-communicate me, I feel that it is incumbent upon me to express my views on the sequence of events that led to such an eventuality. Ao Senden claims that this drastic step was taken because of defiance on my part to resign from the post of President of Naga Hoho. According to Ao Senden, this directive in turn was issued because of non withdrawal of a letter written by Naga Hoho to the Government of Nagaland recommending recognition of Rongmei community as indigenous Naga tribe. Naga Hoho on its part has time and again responded that it never recommended granting of indigenous Naga tribe to Rongmei community. Rather, the Naga Hoho through a letter written to the state government opined that Rongmei community be granted indigenous inhabitant status as in the case of Kukis, Kacharis and Garos. In the meantime, I learnt that Ao Senden representatives had expressed their desire to withdraw from Naga Hoho at a meeting of CNTC. It is quiet ironic to know that an important decision such as withdrawal from Naga Hoho had to be taken not in any platform of Ao Senden but only in a meeting of CNTC. Nevertheless, on hearing this, I met the Presidential Executive Council of Ao Senden in their office on 31st July 2016 at Mokokchung where after presenting to them my position, expressed my willingness to step down from Naga Hoho before Ao Senden officially dissociated itself from Naga Hoho if at all that is the expressed decision of Ao Senden. The Presidential council dissuaded me from resigning from the post of President of Naga Hoho saying that it was never the intention nor the decision of Ao Senden to ask me to step down from Naga Hoho Presidentship. Subsequently, Ao Senden withdrew from Naga Hoho with the plea that till the Naga Hoho letter is withdrawn, it will remain dissociated from Naga Hoho. Later, I was given seven days notice on 16.11.2016 to step down from the post of President of Naga

Hoho. Accordingly, I offered to step down before the expiry of seven days notice from the Presidentship of Naga Hoho on moral ground during its Presidential council meeting on 21.11.2016 which the Naga Hoho rejected due to obvious reasons and asked me to continue as President. Since CNTC and its constituent Tribe Hohos including Ao Senden remained firm on insisting on the withdrawal of Naga Hoho’s letter to the state government, it did so Vide letter No.NH/Corr-04/2013-18, Dated-23-11-16. Inspite of all these conciliatory overtures on the part of Naga Hoho and my individual self for the sake of unity and fraternity among the Naga family, Ao Senden rather than re-joining Naga Hoho decided to excommunicate me through a proclamation in the print media. I assumed that this action was taken against me for fulfilling the demands of Ao Senden and other CNTC constituent units. I also strongly feel that the actions meted out to me by Ao Senden, the apex body of the Ao community is uncalled for and that it amounts to witch hunting of sorts. This view on mine can be substantiated by the following facts: 1. All the communications with regard to Rongmei status were made in the year 2008 during which time I was not the President of Naga Hoho. Subsequent decisions taken by Naga Hoho were made collectively and not by me alone in my personal capacity. 2. When I approached Ao Senden Presidential Council offering to step down from the position of President of Naga Hoho, I was advised not to do so. I was informed that Ao Senden will simply withdraw from Naga Hoho till withdrawal of the contentious letter written by Naga Hoho to the state government. 3. When I was served seven days notice by Ao Senden to quit Naga Hoho and its Presidentship, I immediately offered to resign from Naga Hoho but it was rejected by the Presidential council of the Naga Hoho during its meeting on 21-11-2016. I was under obligation to follow laid down norms and procedures of an Organization in which I am the President. 4. I was never given opportunity to present my case by Ao Senden. Notices and orders were simply issued in-

timating their decisions either through letters or through the media. 5. The decision to join NTC and CNTC were taken by the General Assembly (Lenla Mungdang) of Ao community, whereas, dissociation from Naga Hoho was taken at CNTC meeting at Dimapur by a handful of representatives of Ao Senden without the knowledge of Office Bearers or the Presidential council of Ao Senden. 6. The interim Ao Senden under the Acting President and General Secretary taking such serious steps by signing in the Expulsion/ Ex-communication order is very controversial in nature if we are to follow the decorum of any Civil societies/ apex organizations. Having stated the above, I am prepared to accept the decision of the Interim Ao Senden to ex-communicate me from Ao citizenship if it is acceptable to the entire Ao community and permitted under the Ao customary laws and practices. I may however mention here that it is imperative for all right thinking Ao citizens to study whether ex-communication of an Ao citizen by Ao Senden without the knowledge and approval of the village to which the individual belong is mandated by the time tested and well established customary laws and practices of Aos. I feel that if opinions are not shared in public domain by concerned Ao citizens, then a new precedence will be set, the consequences of which will have to be borne by the future generations for a long time to come. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the entire citizenry of my native village, Yimjenkimong in general and the Putu Menden in particular for not only protecting my citizenship but also for extending fullest cooperation and standing by me and my family during this difficult times. Most importantly, I also express my sincere thanks particularly to those citizens of Ao community and the Nagas in general who have been sensitive to my position and have patiently stood by me offering all kinds of assistance and support. May Almighty God bless Naga people P.Chuba Ozukum, Kohima, (chubaozukum@ gmail.com)

Kohima Lotha Hoho responds

W

ith constrain, the Kohima Lotha Hoho express a few lines of our point of view on Elian Z Lotha’s write-up that appeared on April 18, 2017. We understand that Nagas being democratic by nature are free to express ones views and opinions on any subject. As Elian Z Lotha has freely expressed his views and opinion so also Lotha Hoho or any tribal bodies or individuals have the right to express their views on any common Naga issue; be it political or social. In this regard, one must understand that Naga struggle is important because of the existence of various Tribes and hence no one can stop or prevent their free expressions and views. Elian Z Lotha questioning about the existence of NTC and CNTC assuming that it will jeopardize the framework agreement is unfounded and therefore at the most a disrespect for other’s point of view. As one is free to express once views so also one must be humble enough to respect other’s views. Kohima Lotha Hoho, as a unit of Lotha Hoho, affirms that Mr. Mhao Humtsoe and Er. Mhondamo Ovung are duly elected by Lotha

public. They were elected despite their reluctance. It is also clarified here that these two officials did not change the name from erstwhile “Kyong Hoho” to “Lotha Hoho” but it was the public meeting while electing them unanimously changed the Hoho’s official name to “Lotha Hoho” on the ground that, as a Tribe, the official name is Lotha and the first name of the Hoho was also called “Lotha Tribal Council” way back in 1923. Clear remaining fees Sir,

As per the advertisement published on 8th May 2013 in daily local newspaper by ENSF in collaboration with AASA, a total of 26 students were admitted in Holy Mary Institute of Technology and Science, Hyderabad under fee reimbursement scheme for free education in various technical and professional’s course. However, ENSF failed to pay the fees as per their advertisement and commitment. Students along with ENSF in the presence of college management resolved that ENSF will take sole responsibility for the payment of 2nd year fees and the remaining 3rd & 4th year fees by the student individual. It is learned that ENSF had collected money from various district of Eastern Nagaland under the RD (Rural Department) with approval from State Government and ENPO. ENSF have lately paid only 70% of the 2nd year fees of which we are grateful. We the students are now in our final semester and final exam commence within a period of week. Therefore, it is our humble request to the concerned federation to clear the remaining fees on or before 30/04/2017 else the students will not be allowed for the final examination. Appeal to Labour commissioner Sir,

It has been observed and surprising that in Nagaland private carpenters daily wages are Rs. 600/- either masons or wood carpenters, whether the commissioner of labour had fixed the daily wages or exorbitant on their own. If this practice continues, daily routine quarrel would prevail in the society for their daily wages. Even government labours are not getting daily wages of Rs. 600. Carpenters and daily wage labours should ask for moderate wages. Therefore commissioner of labour should fix government uniform labour and private labour wages so as to maintain tranquillity, peace and harmony in the State. R.K.Lotha social worker

While the Aadhaar Shila is a plan exclusively designed for women, the other scheme Aadhaar Stambh is meant for men. Absolute amount assured on death under Aadhaar Stambh is 100 per cent, whereas for Aadhaar Shila it is 110 per cent of basic sum assured. These plans offer a combination of protection and savings and provide a lump-sum amount at the time of maturity for the surviving policyholder and financial support for the family in case of death of the policyholder, a Corporation statement said today. The maturity benefit under both the plans will be the sum assured with loyalty additions if any, it added. Total basic sum assured under all policies issued to an individual under this plan shall not exceed Rs 3 lakh.

The commission has also asked the state government to strictly implement the National food security Act and also stressed on full implementation of the RTE Act particularly the Human Rights education. the central government and a 14.5 per cent VAT by state governments, taking the tax incidence to 38.5 per cent. So this category of vehicles will attract the highest tax rate of 28 per cent and a state compensation cess to take the total incidence closer to the current levels, the official said. The GST law provides for levy of cess on top of the peak tax rate on demerit and luxury goods like pan masala, tobacco and certain class of automobiles to create a corpus that will be used to compensate states for loss of revenue arising on account of the implementation of the GST in first five years. The official said a cess of up to 15 per cent is provided in the GST Compensation Law and the final incidence of taxation would be arrived at adding the same to the peak rate. The cess would be levied in a manner so as to keep the final incidence of taxation at close to current levels, he said.

Goods and services will have to fall into one of the approved four rate categories of 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent, which is closest rate to the present incidence of taxation. A senior finance ministry official said the closed slab for this category of cars would be 28 per cent, resulting in a small increase in price. New Delhi, Apr 24 (Agencies): The Narendra Modi government is likely to bring some good news for over 47 lakh central government employees and 53 lakh pensioners by making a formal announcement on the revised structure for allowances under the Seventh Pay Commission in next few days. As per media reports, the committee on allowances will submit its final report on Thursday (April 27), when the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley returns to the country after his visit to US and Russia. The allowances form a sizeable amount of the salary drawn by a government employee. The committee on allowances headed by Finance Secretary Ashok Lavasa that was set up to review the recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission is understood to have finalised its report. The 7th Pay Commission had earlier proposed the

ployee at the very bottom of the pay scale, where the basic pay (pay of pay band + grade pay) is now Rs 7,000, would currently be entitled to an HRA of Rs 2,100 in a Class X city. As per 7th Pay Commission, the new entry level pay at this level is Rs 18,000 per month against which the new HRA for a Class X city would be Rs 4,320 per month, that is 106 percent more than the existing level. Similarly, at the highest level of the pay scale, the Cabinet Secretary and officers of the same rank have a basic pay of Rs 90,000, which means they are entitled to current HRA of Rs 27,000 in Class X towns. After the revised pay scale, the new basic pay is Rs 2.5 lakh, for which the HRA would be Rs 60,000, meaning a hike of 122 percent. As far as Transport Allowance (TA) is concerned, Pay Commission had proposed no increase.

Emmanuel Macron, Marine Le Pen set for final French duel

Emmanuel Macron

she hailed as “historic”. But Le Pen’s share of the vote was far below a March poll high of 27 per cent and there was an air of disappointment in her camp that she missed out on the top spot. With a slew of leaders from the right and the left rallying behind Macron, the odds are stacked against her. Polls suggest ex-investment banker Macron would beat her by around 20 percentage points in a final that will not feature a candidate from the mainstream left or right for the first time in six decades. The conservative Le Figaro daily lamented the defeat of the conservative Republicans, whose scandalhit candidate Francois Fillon trailed in third with 19.9 per cent. “The unthinkable happened,” the paper wrote in

an editorial, criticising the right’s defeat in an election after they were initially seen as a shoo-in after five years of troubled Socialist rule. Despite ser ving as economy minister in the outgoing Socialist government of Francois Hollande, Macron casts himself as an “outsider” and his year-old “En Marche!” (“On the move”) movement as revolutionary. “The challenge is to break completely with the system which has been unable to find solutions to the problems of our country for more than 30 years,” Macron said yesterday, already looking past the presidential election to crucial parliamentary elections in June. There were jubilant scenes at his Paris election party, with Macron’s wife Brigitte, who is 25 years his senior, joining him briefly on stage.

Pak Hindus allowed to worship at Shiva temple PESHAWAR, APR 24 (PTI): A Pakistani court today allowed Hindus to worship at a Shiva temple in Abbottabad district which had been off limits to them for 20 years. A bench of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) headed by Justice Ateeq Hussain Shah permitted Hindus to worship at the Shiv Jee temple of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under section 20 of the Constitution. The temple had been closed for any religious activity over property dispute. In 2013, a Hindu NonGovernmental Organisation (NGO) filed a petition with the PHC Abbottabad bench that they had purchased the property through lease by a legal owner. The petitioner pleaded that after partition of subcontinent the NGO has been looking after the temple.

STOCKHOLM, APR 24 (AFP): Sweden has arrested a second suspect over the deadly Stockholm truck attack, prosecutors said today. Fo u r p e o p l e we r e killed, including two Swedes, one Briton and one Belgian, when a truck mowed down pedestrians on a busy shopping street in central Stockholm on April 7. Rakhmat Akilov, a 39-year-old Uzbek national, confessed to driving the stolen truck and is being held in custody but investigators are still searching for possible accomplices. The second unnamed suspect was arrested yesterday, the prosecution authority said in a statement, adding: “No more information can be given at the moment.” The prosecution has until Wednesday to decide whether the suspect should be formally remanded in custody. Police said they had jointly carried out the arrest with the Swedish Security Service “after a large amount of preliminary investigations had been processed.” No terror group has claimed responsibility for the rampage, which resembled vehicle attacks in Nice, Berlin and London. Construction worker Akilov is a father of four who was refused permanent residency in Sweden in June 2016. He went underground last year after receiving a deportation order, police said.

Xi urges ‘restraint’ over N Korea BEIJING, APR 24 (AFP): Chinese President Xi Jinping urged “restraint” over North Korea in a phone call with Donald Trump today, as Japan joined exercises with an American supercarrier heading to the Korean peninsula. The US leader has repeatedly called on China, the North’s sole major ally, to do more to rein in Pyongyang, as tensions in the region soar amid speculation it will conduct another nuclear test. “(China) hopes that the relevant parties can maintain restraint and avoid actions that would increase tensions in the Korean peninsula,” Xi said, according to the foreign ministry. “The only way to realise denuclearisation in the Korean peninsula and quickly resolve North Korea’s nuclear problem is for each relevant party to fulfil its duties.” The conversation -- the second since their summit at Trump’s luxury resort in Florida early this month -highlights rising concern in Beijing that tensions between Washington and Pyongyang could spiral into military conflict. “The international situation is rapidly changing, it is essential that China and the US maintain a close contact and exchange opinions on important matters in a timely manner,” Xi told Trump. Trump also spoke to Japanese Prime Minister

Xi Jinping Shinzo Abe today, discussing the joint drills under way between the US carrier Carl Vinson and Japan’s Maritime Self-Defence Force. “We completely agreed that we strongly demand restraint by North Korea, which has repeatedly taken dangerous provocative actions,” Abe told reporters after the call. Tensions have soared in recent months as North Korean missile tests have brought ever-more bellicose warnings from Trump’s administration -- and repeated demands for China do more to help. Despite its longstanding ties with the North, China has stepped up pressure, announcing in February that it was halting all imports of coal from North Korea -- a crucial earner for Pyongyang -- for the rest of the year. It also issued a stern warning earlier this month that a conflict over North Korea could break out “at any moment”. The comments came

ahead of a failed missile test a day after the 105th anniversary of the birth of North Korea’s founder Kim IlSung. Missile and nuclear tests are often timed around major dates and speculation is now focused on Tuesday’s anniversary of the founding of its military. US Vice President Mike Pence said today that the Vinson and its strike group would arrive in the Sea of Japan (East Sea) -which sits between the Korean peninsula and Japan -“in a matter of days”. South Korea also said it was considering drills with the carrier group, which is currently conducting joint exercises with Japan in the Philippine Sea. Confusion had clouded the carrier’s whereabouts after Trump earlier indicated the “armada” was steaming towards North Korea when in fact it was heading south and was photographed off Java. The North’s ruling party newspaper today called the Vinson’s deployment “undisguised military blackmail”. “Such threat may startle a jellyfish, but can never work on the DPRK,” it said, using the country’s official name. A separate editorial on the North’s propaganda website Uriminzokkiri said the dispatch of the Carl Vinson signalled “that an invasion of the North is nearing day by day”.

Afghan defence min, army chief resign after Taliban attack KABUL, APR 24 (AFP): The Afghan defence minister and his army chief resigned today, days after what is believed to be one of the deadliest-ever Taliban attacks on a military base triggered calls for officials to step down. “President Ashraf Ghani has accepted the resignation of the defence minister and army chief of staff,” a one-line statement from the presidential palace said. Angry Afghans had called for the resignations of minister Abdullah Habibi and army chief Qadam Shah Shaheem, among other officials, after the assault outside the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif on Friday. Ten gunmen dressed in soldiers’ uniforms and armed with suicide vests entered the base in army trucks and opened fire at

unarmed troops at close range in the mosque and dining hall. The exact toll from the assault remains unclear. Afghan officials have so far ignored calls to break down the toll it has given of more than 100 soldiers killed or wounded, but have been known to minimise casualties in such attacks in the past. The US has said that at least 50 soldiers were killed, and some local officials have put the number of dead alone as high as 130. The raid underscores the Taliban’s g rowing strength more than 15 years since they were ousted from power, and as they gear up ahead of the spring fighting season. Many Afghans slammed the government for its inability to counter the attack, the latest in a series of brazen Taliban

desertions, have been struggling to beat back insurgents since US-led NATO troops ended their combat mission in December 2014. According to US watchdog SIGAR, casualties among Afghan security forces soared by 35 percent in 2016, with 6,800 soldiers and police killed. More than a third of Afghanistan is outside government control and many regions are fiercely contested by various insurgent groups, as Kabul’s repeated bids to launch peace negotiations with the Taliban have failed.

Lanka Indian Oil Company (LIOC) said its operations were continuing despite the strike launched by CPC. Lanka and India are expected to sign an agreement to jointly operate an oil storage facility at the strategic eastern port town of Trincomalee. COLOMBO, APR 24 (PTI): Workers of Sri Lanka’s state-run petroleum company went on an indefinite strike from today against a proposed deal with India to jointly operate a strategic oil storage facility at Trincomalee port, crippling fuel distribution and resulting in long queues at filling stations across the island nation. Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) Trade Union Collective workers had yesterday threatened to cripple entire transportation sector in the country as a result of the strike. Petroleum Minister Chandima Weerakkody was hopeful of a solution as he scheduled a round of talks with the CPC trade unions later today. “Disruption in fuel distribution has been reported due to the strike and long lines of motorists have been observed at filling stations,” Managing Director

The outcome capped an extraordinary campaign in a deeply divided and demoralised France, which has been rocked by a series of terror attacks since 2015 and is struggling to shake off a deep economic malaise. The French vote was being closely watched as a bellwether for populist sentiment following the election of Donald Trump as US President and Britain’s vote to leave the EU. Throughout the campaign, Macron insisted France was “contrarian” -ready to elect a pro-globalisation liberal at a time when right-wing nationalists are making gains around the world. Le Pen seized on a jihadist attack that claimed the life of a policeman on the Champs Elysees in Paris three days before the vote to stress her tough line on immigration and Islam. But most voters appeared to have taken the threat in their stride. The euro was up today as fears of France pulling out of the single currency and European Union receded. “Most likely, the French election can mark a turning point for France and Europe,” said analyst Holger Schmieding from Berenberg Bank.

PARIS, APR 24 (AFP): Pro-European centrist Emmanuel Macron and antiimmigration leader Marine Le Pen began a final duel for the French presidency today, after a first round of voting delivered a stunning blow to the traditional political class. Macron is the clear favourite to become France’s youngest-ever president after topping Sunday’s ballot with 23.75 per cent of votes, slightly ahead of National Front (FN) leader Le Pen on 21.53 per cent. The result reflected a desire for change in the deeply divided country, with the top spots going to two outsiders who transcended the left-right divide. Addressing thousands of flag-waving supporters in Paris yesterday evening, 39year-old Macron set the tone for the May 7 run-off, saying he aimed to unite “patriots” against “the threat of nationalists.” The anti-immigration, anti-EU Le Pen, who campaigned as the candidate “of the people”, said voters faced a choice between “runaway globalisation” and a protectionist France. The 48-year-old exlawyer gained over a million new voters compared with the 2012 election, securing 7.6 million ballots, a result

Barca snatch late El Clasico win

Messi is now the all-time top-scorer in El Clasico in La Liga (16), surpassing Alfredo Di Stefano (14) after his first strike.

time put Barca on course for victory before James Rodriguez came off the bench to level four minutes from time. However, fittingly, Messi had the final say with a brilliant finish deep into stoppage time to lift Barcelona’s hopes of a third straight La Liga title. Victory takes Barca top of the table thanks to their better head-to-head record with both sides locked on 75 points, but Madrid have a game in hand. Fresh from dumping Bayern Munich out the

Champions League in a 4-2 thriller after extra-time in midweek, Madrid had started confidently in another breathless encounter at the Bernabeu. Unsurprisingly given both Madrid’s potency and Barca’s inability to defend set-pieces, the opener arrived from a dead ball. Marcelo picked up the loose ball from a corner and when Sergio Ramos volleyed his cross against the post, Casemiro was on hand to tap into an unguarded net. The lead lasted just five minutes, though, as

Kante named PFA player of the year

Chelsea star N’Golo Kante has been voted the PFA Player of the Year for the 2016-17 season.

L o n d o n, A p r 2 4 (Agencies): Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante has been voted the PFA Players’ Player of the Year. Kante moved to Stamford Bridge after winning the Premier League title with Leicester last season and he is on course for a

second successive medal with Chelsea currently four points clear at the top of the table. The Frenchman has been a key member of Antonio Conte’s squad this season and he secured the most votes from his fellow players to be crowned Player of the Year ahead of

Siddle, Marsh left out of Australia central contracts

Peter Siddle

Shaun Marsh

S y d n e y, A p r 2 4 (Agencies): Peter Siddle and Shaun Marsh are among the players to miss out as Australia reveal a more youthful list of central contracts. Siddle has been out of the side since November while Marsh struggled on the recent tour of India. There is also no central contract for wicketkeeper Peter Nevill, allrounder James Faulkner, former one-day captain George Bailey and spinner Steve O’Keefe, who was recently fined for a second alcohol-related offence in less than 12 months. All-rounders Ashton Agar and Hilton Cartwright and young Queensland paceman Billy Stanlake receive a central contract

for the first time. Leg-spinner Adam Zampa and veteran Nathan Lyon are the only two specialist slow bowlers on the list. Young batsmen Matthew Renshaw and Peter Handscomb are also included after making their Test breakthrough in recent months. Cricket Australia said 20 deals would be handed out once negotiations with the Australian Cricketers’ Association over a new pay agreement had been finalised. “Hilton has thoroughly earned his spot in the list this year,” chief selector Trevor Hohns said. Australia will be in the Champions Trophy in England this summer before the Ashes starts in November Down Under.

Chelsea team-mate Eden Hazard, Tottenham’s Harry Kane, Everton striker Romelu Lukaku, Zlatan Ibrahimovic of Manchester United and Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez. Should Chelsea hold off the challenge of Tottenham in the title race, Kante will become the first player to win successive Premier League titles with different clubs. “It’s a huge honour to be chosen by the other players. It’s the biggest honour to get this award,” Kante said. Hazard came second with Ibrahimovic third after an impressive debut season in England. Meanwhile, Tottenham’s Dele Alli was named PFA Young Player of the Year for the second successive season, with former Manchester United midfielder David Beckham picking up the PFA’a Merit Award for his contribution to the game.

AIFF to check malpractice in Lajong-Aizawl tie Ko lkata , A p r 2 4 (IANS): To take any chance of corrupt practices out of the equation, AIFF is sending their Integrity Officer Javed Siraj a day earlier to Shillong where Lajong FC will take on Aizawl FC in what would be I-League’s title-deciding match on Sunday. “We will be sending Siraj a day in advance, that is on Saturday for the crucial game. Usually he reaches a venue on matchday but owing to the magnitude of the tie, we are making this exception,” a top AIFF officials told IANS. Sports Radar, a supplier of sports integrity services, who FIFA and AFC have appointed on behalf of AIFF to curb the menace of corrupt practices, will also be on high alert ahead of the game. Siraj will be tasked to brief the players about the evils of this malpractice.

NE W D E L H I , A p r 24 (PTI): Indian boxing star Vijender Singh will not compete in the Amir Khan-backed Super Boxing League, which will roll out from July 7. Vijender, who is promoted by IOS Boxing Promotions, is the reigning WBO Asia Pacific super middleweight champion and is expected to defend his title for a second time next month after the IPL. The Super Boxing League (SBL) will feature eight franchises and each team will comprise six players (five men and one woman with six back-up players per team). The league will be promoted by two-time world champion British star Amir along with India partner Bill Dosanjh, who brought the Super Fight League, a mixed martial arts event to India. Dosanjh has spoken about the possibility of a Vijender- Amir showdown in the SBL but IOS rejected any such idea. “We never had any discussion with the promoters of SBL on Vijender Singh fighting in their league. Hence, the possibility of Vijender fighting Amir Khan in the SBL does not arise,” IOS Boxing Promotions’ MD Neerav Tomar said.

Younus Khan hits historic landmark

Kingston, Apr 24 (Agencies): Younus Khan became the first Pakistan player to score 10,000 Test on the third day of the first Test against West Indies. The 39-year-old is just the 13th batsman in the history of the sport to break the 10,000-run barrier. He took his place in the record books with a sweep shot for a boundary off Royston Chase on the second ball after the tea interval at Sabina Park having started the day requiring just 23 runs to reach his target. He was eventually dismissed for 58, caught by Kraigg Brathwaite off the bowling of Shannon Gabriel as Pakistan ended the day 201-4, 77 runs behind the hosts’ first innings total. Younus, playing in his 116th Test, will retire after the three-match series in the Caribbean having made his debut in 2000. He has made 32 Test centuries with a best score of 313 against Sri Lanka in 2009. Earlier, Jason Holder had finished unbeaten on 57 after the delayed start to another rain-affected day as Mohammad Amir completed his best Test innings figures to wrap up the home side’s innings after they resumed at the overnight position of 278-9.

Younus Khan became the first Pakistani to score 10,000 runs in the Test format.

Amir bowled last man Gabriel to finish with 6-44, an effort which improved on his previous best of 6-84 against England at Lord’s in 2010. Play started 90 minutes later than scheduled due to the continuing effects of heavy, torrential rain on a damp outfield which reduced play to just 55 minutes on the second day. Pakistan started their reply brightly with Azhar

Ali (15) looking ominous before he chased a wide delivery from Alzarri Joseph to give a catch to wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich tumbling in front of first slip. Ahmed Shehzad, playing his first Test for almost two years, also opened brightly with a flurry of shots, including five boundaries in 31 only to be trapped leg-before on the back foot by Holder.

Benteke strikes twice to beat Liverpool Lo n d o n, A p r 2 4 (Agencies): Christian Benteke scored twice on his Anfield return as Crystal Palace came from behind to beat Liverpool 2-1 on Sunday. Philippe Coutinho had put Liverpool ahead on 24 minutes with a glorious curling free-kick from distance but Benteke levelled just before half-time, exploiting some slack defending to convert at the far post. Former Liverpool striker Benteke then headed a 74th-minute winner after the home side failed to deal with a corner, his fifth goal as an opposition player at Anfield denting his old club’s topfour hopes. The result leaves Liverpool just three points clear of fifth-placed Manchester United, who have two games in hand on the Reds, but sends Palace seven points clear of relegation. James Tomkins carved out the game’s first chance after 19 minutes, shrugging off Lucas Leiva then danc-

ing between Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip before curling a shot just wide of the post. Kept at distance by the Palace defence, Coutinho needed a set-piece to finally pick his spot, sending Hennessey dashing across goal in vain with an inch-perfect free-kick to put Liverpool ahead midway through the first half. Liverpool were unable to hold on to their lead until

half-time. Minutes after being booked for diving, an unmarked Benteke finished into the roof of the net from Yohan Cabaye’s cross to the back post (42). Liverpool pressed after the break, with Coutinho clipped by Martin Kelly in the Palace box but staying on his feet to see his shot blocked. Liverpool failed to clear a Palace corner and Benteke was allowed

to run free into the six-yard box and he stooped low to head home beyond Simon Mignolet. Klopp threw on Marko Grujic, Alberto Moreno and Trent Alexander-Arnold in search of an equaliser, but Palace held on for their sixth win in eight games under Allardyce as Liverpool surrendered ground in the race for Champions League qualification.

Man United, City and Chelsea after Griezmann L o n d o n, A p r 2 4 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : M a n chester United appear to be leading the chase to sign Antoine Griezmann, according to the Atletico Madrid’s striker’s advisor. Eric Olhats, the scout who helped to discover the Frenchman, claims Chelsea, Manchester City, Barcelona and Real Madrid are also interested in the player. Griezmann, who has a release clause in his contract of £84m, has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford in recent months but has insisted he wants to stay at the Spanish club. But Olhats said he will listen to offers for the striker, who has scored 16 goals in La Liga this season. “We’re at the stage of gathering information from clubs who have a concrete interest,” he told French TV show Telefoot. “There is an unavoidable €100m clause so that restricts the number of candidates. You have United, City, Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid. United were the first to come and see us and the most concrete in their wishes.”

M A D R I D, A p r 2 4 (Agencies): Lionel Messi struck his 500th Barcelona goal with almost the last kick of the game to blow the La Liga title race wide open with a thrilling 3-2 win at Real Madrid on Sunday. Messi had broken a three-year goalless drought against Madrid to cancel out Casemiro’s opener for Madrid in the first-half. Ivan Rakitic’s stunning strike and a red card for Madrid captain Sergio Ramos for chopping down Messi 13 minutes from

with a handkerchief still mopping the blood from his cheek, Messi danced past Dani Carvajal and Nacho to fire home his first goal against Madrid for three years. H oweve r, M a d r i d were rampant at the start of the second period, but were met with a wall of resistance in Ter Stegen. The German dived low to his left to turn international teammate Toni Kroos’s effort behind before diverting Karim Benzema’s goalbound header to safety with his outstretched foot. There was nothing Navas could do to deny Barca 17 minutes from time when Rakitic took aim from 25 yards and drilled into the top corner. The match seemed to have swung decisively in Barca’s favour four minutes later when Ramos scythed down Messi to be shown the 22nd red card of his career. However, even with 10 men, Madrid rallied and levelled when substitute James Rodriguez swept home Marcelo’s cross four minutes from time. There was still time for one huge twist in the title race, though, as Sergi Roberto’s lung-bursting run led a Barca counter-attack to feed Jordi Alba and his cross was smashed into the corner by Messi.
