140 Afghan soldiers killed in attack MAZAR-I-SHARIF/KABUL, APR 22 (AGENCIES): At least 140 Afghan soldiers were killed by Taliban attackers apparently disguised in military uniforms, officials said on Saturday, in what would be the deadliest attack ever on an Afghan military base. One official in the northern city of Mazar-iSharif, where the attack occurred, said on Saturday at least 140 soldiers were killed and many others wounded. Other officials said the toll was likely to be even higher. They spoke on the condition of anonymity because the government has yet to release exact casualty figures. The defense ministry said more than 100 soldiers were killed or wounded. The attack starkly highlighted the struggle by the Afghan government and its international backers to defeat a Taliban insurgency. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani visited the base on Saturday, and in a statement online, condemned the attack as “cowardly” and the work of “infidels”. As many as 10 Taliban fighters, dressed in Afghan

army uniforms and driving military vehicles, made their way into the base and opened fire on mostly unarmed soldiers eating and leaving a mosque after Friday prayers, according to officials. They used rocket-propelled grenades and rifles, and several detonated suicide vests packed with explosive, officials said. Witnesses described a scene of confusion as soldiers were uncertain who the attackers were. “It was a chaotic scene and I didn’t know what to do,” said one army officer wounded in the attack. The base is the headquarters for
the Afghan National Army’s 209th Corps, responsible for much of northern Afghanistan, including Kunduz, a province which has seen heavy fighting. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on Saturday the attack on the base was retribution for recent killing of several senior Taliban leaders in northern Afghanistan. On Saturday, the U.S. military command in Kabul said that an American air strike killed a Taliban commander, Quari Tayib, on April 17. Mujahid said the attack on the base killed as many as 500 soldiers, including
senior commanders. Four of the attackers were Taliban sympathizers who had infiltrated the army and served for some time, Mujahid said. That has not been confirmed by the Afghan army. NATO-led military coalition deploys advisers to the base where the attack occurred to train and assist Afghan forces but coalition officials said no foreign troops were hurt or killed. “The attack on the 209th Corps today shows the barbaric nature of the Taliban,” commander of coalition forces, U.S. General John Nicholson, said in a statement on Friday.

This move comes few days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged at bringing a legal framework under which generic medicines should be given by the doctors and the healthcare system in India should have an extensive reach so that drugs are made available to all the people. Congress slams Arunachal CM for Tibet statement
Itanagar, Apr 22 (IANS): The Congress Arunachal Pradesh unit on Saturday described as “immature and uncalled for” Chief Minister Pema Khandu’s statement that the Indian state shares a border with Tibet and not China. “The Chief Minister of a sensitive state like Arunachal Pradesh should not make any statement before going through the political status and history of Tibet, as recognised by the Indian government,” state Congress President Takam Sanjoy said. Sanjoy, a former Lok Sabha member, said Tibet as of today has the status of the ‘Tibetan Autonomous Region of People’s Republic of China’. On April 14, New Delhi said there is no change in the Indian position that Tibet is a part of China and that it will continue to seek a mutually acceptable solution to the boundary issue. Khandu had allegedly said that Beijing has no right to threaten New Delhi on the Dalai Lama’s movement within the country as India shares a boundary with Tibet and not China. He said the McMahon Line in reality demarcates the territory between India and Tibet.
would also soon come out with a chargesheet against Sangma’s government and “vision document” for Meghalaya. “The chargesheet will reflect a complete mismanagement of governance and corruptions and underdevelopment and also many personal complicity of the Congress leadership in Meghalaya,” the BJP leader said. While ruling out Sangma’s entry into the BJP-fold, Sarma said: “He (Sangma) will not be admitted into the BJP (although he had not applied to join).” “Till he loses his own seat in the next election, none of us will meet him,” he added. Asked if the BJP would ask Sangma to merge with the saffron party in case of a hung assembly in Meghalaya, Sarma said, “If at all that situation arises, we have our friends in Meghalaya who are known for antiCongress principles for decades.” “Why do we have to
Forest authority denies killing Royal Bengal tiger in Mnp Correspondent
IMPHAL, Apr 22: Manipur forest authority Saturday denied any instance of killing Royal Bengal Tiger in interior Manipur village bordering Nagaland. Recently, gory pictures of a slain Royal Bengal Tiger went viral on the social media. The big cat was reportedly hunted by villagers of a Manipur village at the border with Nagaland. Manipur principal chief conservator of forest P N Prasad has denied the report of killing the big cat in Manipur. In an interview with a local cable network, Prasad said the photographs of killing of Royal Bengal Tiger, which were uploaded in social media, were the photographs of killing a tiger in Nagaland in 2015. He said the state forest department was trying to find out the authenticity of the photographs which were shot at three different locations. However, he admitted that there was report of presence of Royal Bengal Tiger in Manipur’s Tamenglong district as per a report provided by the National Tiger Conserva-

tion Authority (NTCA). Based on the report, NTCA along with the state forest department in association with other government agencies were on the look for foot prints of tiger in the district using CCTVs and by using Plaster of Paris. There are reports of tigers appearing in Senapati areas as well. These animals keep wandering and can be seen not only in Assam and Nagaland, but also in dense areas of Manipur, he said. Prasad added that the issue will be discussed at a meeting to be organized by National Tiger Conservation Authority on May 2 in Guwahati. Nine years ago, there were reports that a Royal Bengal tiger was sighted near Bhalok and nearby village in Manipur’s Tamenglong district. The villagers had informed forest officials about an animal similar to a Royal Bengal tiger attacking domestic animals at Bhalok and nearby villages.

When asked how the BJP could form government of its own in Meghalaya when the party did not even have a member in the assembly, Sarma said, “In Manipur too, we did not have any MLA; and from zero, today we are leading the government.” Sarma said: “I think zero is a lucky figure for the party wherever we had zero we have formed the government. Because we were zero, that is why we didn’t have anti-incumbency and that is why people didn’t have any grievances with the BJP. This gives us more confidence that yes we will come to power in Meghalaya.”

Shillong, Apr 22: Predicting Meghalaya’s Congress-led government’s downfall, BJP poll strategist Himanta Biswa Sarma has shown confidence that his party will win the people’s mandate in the state in 2018. Sarma, who is considered the chief architect of BJP’s success in Assam and Manipur, was optimistic that Chief Minister Mukul Sangma will lose in the next assembly elections. “My own assessment is that the people of Meghalaya will vote for (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi and for development. We will have our own government,” he told journalists on Friday. “Our idea is to ensure that he and his brother (Sports and Youth Affairs minister Zenith M. Sangma lose in the elections. Do not be surprised if Sangma loses,” the Sarma, who also holds the Finance portfolio in Sarbananda Sonowal-led BJP government, said.
Hinting that the BJP is gearing up to contest in all the 60 assembly seats, Sarma said: “We recognise that Meghalaya has a very unpopular government. Meghalaya has not seen the kind of development which the people of the state deserve.” “Therefore, in order to make Meghalaya a frontranking state there should be a government which would be ready to implement Modi’s vision both in letter and spirit.” “So in order to translate Modi’s vision in Meghalaya, we need a vehicle which will be our own state government which will implement the Prime Minister’s programmes of development for Meghalaya,” Sarma noted. M o r e ove r, h e i n formed that the party workers were working hard and the party organisation in the state was ready to take up challenges. New UP DGP vows to crackdown on gau rakshak, goondagardi Lu c k n ow, A P R 2 2 (AGENCIES): The new police chief of Uttar Pradesh, Sulkhan Singh, on Saturday vowed to crush “goondagardi” and warned that no one will be allowed to take law in their hands in the name of cow vigilantism or protection from eve-teasing. “Those indulging in ‘goondagardi’ and criminal activities will be dealt with without mercy. They cannot escape and even VIPs will not be spared,” the 1980batch IPS officer who took over charge of DGP of the State said on Saturday. “No one has the right to interfere in the name of gau raksha or eve-teasing at public places or any such basis... and if someone does vigilantism, police will take strict action... We ask people to give us information if they come across such things. We will also ensure that we neither ask for their names nor make them public,” he said. “We will not allow anyone to indulge in forceful behaviour as it leads to hatred in society and it will not be allowed,” Singh said in response to a question. To a query on antiRomeo squads, Singh said it was not a drive and would continue on a regular basis as policing. “The policemen deployed in it will be briefed directly by the SPs... they will work undercover to monitor objectionable behaviour in public place... questioning and interrogation is not part of this... the staff will be clearly briefed about what action they have to take,” he said. Sulkhan Singh in ensuring security of the common man. He took over from Javeed Ahmed who was shunted to the post of DG PAC. “Uniform action will be taken against any wrong doer. There will be no bias, whosoever the culprit is or whatever political connection the person flaunts,” he said. Asked about some persons associated with the ruling party allegedly taking the law in their hands, he said, “The CM has clearly instructed that the police should work in an unbiased manner and act against all, be it from ruling party or anyone else, and I want to assure that all those indulging in goonda and criminal activities will be dealt with as per the law.” Spelling out his priorities as the DGP, he said maximum FIRs would be filed and the police would get full freedom to work without fear or pressure from any quarter. Singh, who has an image of being an upright officer, said, “My effort will be to ensure unbiased policing and keeping the morale of the force high.” To another question pertaining to allegations of
rampant corruption in the police machinery, he said, “Fair inquiry will be held in all cases.” Asked about the sagging morale of the police force in view of over 100 cases of assaults and killings of the men-in-khaki, Singh said it was a contentious issue. “But, definitely if there is any demoralisation in the force, I would address it on top priority,” he said.
State on alert after warning from MP police
Uttar Pradesh police tightened security in all districts on Saturday following intelligence inputs that “anti-national elements” dressed like Hindu saints were planning to carry out “spectacular” attacks at prominent religious sites and public places in the state. The inputs, provided by Madhya Pradesh police, said the 17-18 men had been trained by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence in Hindu religious practices and shlokas, and might try to blend into the local populace before carrying out strikes. “A group of 17-18 antinational elements, trained in Hindu rituals, is planning a spectacular incident at
prominent religious sites and other sensitive spots in the guise of sadhus,” the letter issued by additional director general of MP police read. The alert comes roughly a month after Hindu hardline leader Yogi Adityanath took over as chief minister of the state, and two days after UP’s anti-terrorist squad busted a suspected terror module along with sleuths from five other states. New UP director general of police, Sulkhan Singh, who took over on Saturday, said he “won’t be able to comment immediately on a specific issue”. “But, I can assure you that we are capable of neutralising any threat,” Singh told HT. A senior official said police tightened security in crowded places as well as important pilgrimages such as Ayodhya, Mathura and Varanasi. Besides, he said, additional security personnel were deployed at Taj Mahal in Agra, the high court in Allahabad and its Lucknow bench, the assembly and secretariat buildings and other important government offices in Lucknow. The MP police letter referred to a 2016 incident in which eight suspected members of the banned Students Islamic Movement if India (Simi) had also assumed the guise of Hindus to escape attention. The men were killed after escaping from a jail in Madhya Pradesh last year. Meanwhile, a Lucknow court allowed eightday police remand of the two suspected terrorists Ahtesham-ul-Haq and Mohammad Faizan to UP’s anti terrorist squad (ATS) .

Indian IT firms don’t steal jobs, create them: Ravi Shankar Prasad
New Delhi, Apr 22 (IANS): A day ahead of civic elections in Delhi, Swaraj India leader Yogendra Yadav on Saturday accused Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of betraying the people’s trust and sought his resignation if the AAP fails to win half of the 272 municipal wards. In a letter to Kejriwal, Yadav said the Chief Minister has turned the Sunday elections to the three municipal corporations into a referendum on his popularity. “If he loses in this referendum, two years after securing 67 of 70 assembly seats in Delhi, he must not make an excuse about electronic voting machines and resign as Chief Minister if the Aam Aadmi Party did not win 50 per cent of the MC seats. Yadav said the mandate given by Delhi residents to Aam Aadmi Party in the 2015 assembly elections was not because of one leader or one party.

Rajnath Singh agreed to consider the Chief Minister’s request to allow at least the descendants of the Sikhs blacklisted by the central government to visit India, a Punjab government

spokesperson said. During a courtesy call on External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Friday, Amarinder Singh had expressed concern over the delay in removing the names of Sikh youths put on the blacklist for alleged involvement in subversive or anti-India activities during and after the Khalistan movement in Punjab during the 80s and 90s. These youths can’t visit/return to India due to their names being on the blacklist. Swaraj had assured of taking up the issue with the
Home Ministry which was said to be in the process of gradually pruning the list. Amarinder Singh also urged the Home Minister to direct the Central Bureau of Investigation and other central agencies to expedite probes into cases of sacrilege and targeted killings in Punjab, the spokesman said. He sought five additional Border Security Force companies to strengthen security on the India-Pakistan border in Punjab and stressed the need to set up a second line of defence.
BSF deployment needed to be strengthened in Punjab on the pattern of Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief Minister said while citing the fidayeen attacks in Dinanagar in 2015 and the Indian Air Force station in Pathankot in 2016. The second line of defence was necessitated in Punjab by the fact that its border was vulnerable to terror attacks as also infiltration of terrorists, arms and ammunition, and drugs from across the border in view of heavy security on the international border in Jammu and Kashmir.

Death toll rises to nine in Bengal violence, 6 arrested
Birbhum, Apr 22 (IANS): With two more persons succumbing to their injuries since the late hours on Friday, the toll in the crude bomb explosion in West Bengal’s Birbhum district has risen to nine, police said on Saturday. “Nine people have died so far in the crude bomb explosion following clashes between two groups in Birbhum district’s Labpur since yesterday (Friday). A few more are critically injured,” Birbhum Superintendent of Police N. Sudheer Kumar told IANS. “After seven people dying till Friday evening, two more have succumbed to their injuries in the hospital,” he said. Six people have been arrested so far while police have registered suo motu cases against several members of the two groups for the violent clashes on Friday. According to police, the clashes between the two groups were an offshoot of a war for supremacy in the area. “We have started two separate cases since yesterday (Friday), one for the clashes and the other one for making crude bombs. We have arrested six miscreants so far in the first case,” Kumar said. Police claimed some of those involved in making crude bombs died in the accidental explosion. “The people who died in the explosion were involved in making crude bombs. Bomb-making materials like stone chips and explosives have been recovered from some of the deceased’s house,” Kumar said.

urprising political observers, the BJP (a right wing Hindu nationalist party) and the PDP (a pro-separatist Muslim party) entered into a political marriage in 2015 in order to keep others out and then grab power. It was a classic case of permanent interests overriding ideologies that stand poles apart. The opportunistic alliance also disproved the human law that ‘east and west can never meet’. Since coming to power, the PDP has been facing some difficult times whenever there is unrest or protests in the valley. While the PDP does not and cannot afford, to be indifferent to the problem of its constituents such pro-separatist elements; the BJP on the other hand, also cannot be silent to the expectations that it would maintain a rigid stand against anti-India protests and actions. Perhaps for quite some months, the BJP had been trying to manage the situation. However, as the situation in the valley worsens by the week, the BJP and PDP find that they are being driven apart by their ideologies. With the Jammu and Kashmir Government led by Mehbooba Mufti drawing sharp criticism in wake of the recent unrest in the Valley, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ram Madhav held a meeting with Finance Minister and People`s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Haseeb Drabu to discuss the future strategy. The meeting assumes significance as the BJP is a coalition partner of the PDP in Jammu and Kashmir. The state has seen the rise of a phenomenon called ‘stone pelting’ in recent times. IN particular, the incidents have increased manifold in the region since the BJP-PDP Government came to power in 2015. The centre has taken a stand not to allow stone pelters and anti-India forces take centre stage. That may not be a difficult task but acting on that is itself a herculean task. Thus, while PDP is pulling the other way, the BJP is going the opposite side and this is putting big stress on the string of that binds their alliance. Recently, true to the warning of the chief of the army General Bipin Rawat, that the army will not tolerate any act inimical to the country’s interest and would act with a firm hand. That was in February 2017 and in April, a video showing a Kashmiri tied up to the front of an Army jeep as a shield against stone pelters has kicked up a row. After both PDP and BJP went their separate ways on dealing with such situation, the issue got more pronounced when political parties disapproved of the manner in which the man was tied as a shield. The reaction from the BJP was totally supportive. BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav said the idea of using a Kashmiri man as a human shield against angry stone-pelters a young army officer was the right thing as everything is fair in love and war. Describing Rawat’s comments as “tragic”, National Conference spokesman Junaid Azim Mattu said the government should instead approach and engage with the youth of the militancy-hit Kashmir Valley. Instead of improving the situation as promised, the BJP-PDP marriage has not improved the situation but instead it has worsened and their differences are showing.
DailyDevotion The Light That Never Fails
We all, with unveiled face, beholding…the glory of the Lord… —2 Corinthians 3:18 A servant of God must stand so very much alone that he never realizes he is alone. In the early stages of the Christian life, disappointments will come— people who used to be lights will flicker out, and those who used to stand with us will turn away. We have to get so used to it that we will not even realize we are standing alone. Paul said, “…no one stood with me, but all forsook me…. But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me…” (2 Timothy 4:16-17). We must build our faith not on fading lights but on the Light that never fails. When “important” individuals go away we are sad, until we see that they are meant to go, so that only one thing is left for us to do— to look into the face of God for ourselves. Allow nothing to keep you from looking with strong determination into the face of God regarding yourself and your doctrine. And every time you preach make sure you look God in the face about the message first, then the glory will remain through all of it. A Christian servant is one who perpetually looks into the face of God and then goes forth to talk to others. The ministry of Christ is characterized by an abiding glory of which the servant is totally unaware— “…Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him” (Exodus 34:29). We are never called on to display our doubts openly or to express the hidden joys and delights of our life with God. The secret of the servant’s life is that he stays in tune with God all the time.

Patient Rights
Vol. XXVII NO. 136 Dimapur, Sunday, April 23, 2017
Back to square one
Nagaland Post, Dimapur
W
hat is Patient rights? Patients’ rights emerged from human rights, constitutional rights, civil rights, consumer rights, codes of ethics of medical and nursing profession. The codes of ethics of medical and nursing profession defines the duties of the doctors and nurses towards the patient. These duties form the basis of patients’ rights. Similarly, the constitution of India gives certain rights on its citizen, e.g.: Right to Life, Rights against exploitation. All these comprises the rights of a patient legally as a citizen of India. Everyone one of us must have visited a hospital at least once as a patient seeking treatment or as a visitor/ attendant of a patient. What was your experience all together from your entry till the exit in the hospital?Earlier, medical professionhas been held with reverence and was considered a noble profession, butat present,it has been commercialized to such an extent that it has been associated with a number of malpractices and negligence over the years. In today’s scenario, healthcare is no more considered as a noble service, but availed like any other consumer services. You pay money and expect to be provided the best care. This may have occurred with the growth of consumerism or increasing awareness of the consumers/patients, resulting in the comfort zone of many healthcare professionals been stretched and the accountability of care and service provided under scrutiny through media, internet information’s, Consumer Protection Act and many more likely to creep up in the coming years of advancement. Unless the public is aware of its rights and makes an individual effort to know their rights, the health care services anywhere else will take its own time to provide a good quality service for the patients. The medical profession has been brought under Consumer Protection Act, 1986 section 2(1) (o) only after a landmark case in 1995 through the Supreme Court
R
found violating clause 1.5 of Ethics Regulations. Some important cases to reflect upon by the patient or consumers of health care services are: • Wrong Diagnosis: The patient was initially diagnosed as having Tuberculosis and treatment was given. However later on the basis of other symptoms it was found that he had Jaundice. Allegation that the hospital and attending doctors were negligent in their treatment and diagnosis. Complaint was held to be maintainable. (1993 Consumer Claims Journal 198). • Unqualified Nurse: Wrong administration of injection caused paralysis of leg of a child and the nurse who administered the injection was not qualified. Opposite parties directed to pay compensation and treatment expenses. (1999 CCJ 960) Kerala. • Foreign body left inside after operation of leg which was removed by another doctor. Opposite parties directed to pay Rs. 20,000/- as compensation. (1999 CCJ 99) National Commission. • May 26, 1995: The case of Indian actress Sridevi’s mother, who was operated on the wrong side of the brain at Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan, New York USA. • In Florida, February 1995: surgeon mistakenly removed the wrong leg of his patient, 52-yearold Willie King, during an amputation procedure. This article intention is not to encourage the patients to question the hospital’s treatment but to make them aware of their rights. Just like a customer should know that while buying any product they should be provided safe/ uncontaminated product with the correct quality, quantity, purityso as to protect the consumer against unfair trade practices; similarly, a patient should know that he/she deserves quality treatment and safe environment free from exploitation and malpractices during their visit to the hospital. ith the Gover nment of India decision of making Sanskrit a compulsory subject in CBSE affiliated schools one is constrained to ask if this is yet another agenda of the BJP led Centre to spread the‘Hindutva’ ideology. Taking into account the Centre’s move on observing ‘Good Governance Day’ on Christmas and Digital Day during Good Friday, no matter the nature of intent one is forced to speculate on the rationale behind such an act. The recent Draft on the NEP by the HRD further accentuates and confirms the fears and doubts of the minority Christian’s and alike To mention a few, the Draft propounds thati) Yoga to be made compulsory and facilities for the same are mandatory for educational institutions to get recognition. ii) Study of Sanskrit and Indian culture to be made mandatory in the curriculum. The draft also mentions names of Gokhale, Ram Mohan Roy, Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya and Gandhiji who worked for better education but has ignored a) Sir Sayed who founded Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College. b) William Carey who founded the Sirampore University and was the inspiration to Raja Ram MohanRoy. The draft mentions the ancient patriarchal Gurukul system and praises the contributions of male Hindu scholars of the past and of Hindu leaders in modern India. While a curriculum should reflect the plural culture of India, the Draft clearly shows the opposite- the views and apprehensions of the minority being ignored. The Christian Church has played a vital role in the development and growth of
modern education in Nagaland or for that matter in most parts of north eastern India. The influence being so profound, that every district of Nagaland has an educational institution sponsored and managed by the Church regardless of denominations. Is it then not disheartening and outrageous when we take a closer look at the Draft for the New Education Policy (NEP) presented by the Ministry of HRD? Is it not clear, the apparent saffornisation of the educational system in the country? The draft with its emphasis on administration through a hierarchy of offices at state level, district and rural areas aims at establishing a centralized system of education which takes away the freedom and dynamism of church-run institutions and individual schools. The draft talking about introducing the study of Indian Culture- Hindi and Sanskrit being made compulsory is in fact a disguise to introduce subjects of religious significance. And while various topics and questions might seem like the need of the hour it is worthwhile to take into account that the NEP if and when implemented regardless of Article 371A or not, Nagaland being a part of India, what happens to the rest of the nation invairably effects the posterity in the long run. At a time when the fabric of the education system is being distorted it is imperative we stand up against the Hindutva based policy of the Modi government lest the future generation blames us for being indifferent, lest democracy becomes an invalid rubber stamp, destroying the Secular entity that makes up for the monicker ‘Unity in Diversity’. eligion is one own belief that cannot be impose upon to another with bloodshed or with gun point. It is one own understanding and acceptance after learning the teaching of each particular religious preaching’s be it Christians, Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Zoroastrians, Judaicas, Jains, Bahais and so on. The recent bombing on the Egyptian Coptic Christians minority by the IS militant on Palm Sunday where innocents life was lost is one such example bombing in the name of religion for salvation in paradise after death. Actually the religion of Islam is the religion of Peace, so does it really suit with their Motto? On contrary to it, Christian which

decision in “Indian Medical Association vs VP Shantha”. The following categories of doctors/ hospitals have been included under this section: 1. All medical/dental practitioners doing independent medical/dental practice unless rendering only free service. 2. Private hospitals charging all patients. 3. All hospitals having free as well as paying patients and all the paying and free category patients receiving treatment in such hospitals. 4. Medical/dental practitioners and hospitals paid by an insurance firm for the treatment of a client or an employment for that of an employee. How safe is the health care services? As per CDC (Center for Disease Control & Prevention, a leading national public health institute of the United States): On any given day, about 1 in 25 hospital patients has at least one healthcare-associated infection. As per WHO (Jul 21, 2011): “Your chances of dying due to an error in hospital is 1 in 300 whereas, the risk of dying from a plane crash is 1 in 10 million passengers. The chance of a hospital erroris about 1 in 10 in most hospitals around the world and 5,000 deaths directly related to healthcare-acquired infections in England each year”. To protect patient from medication/ prescription errors, the Medical Council (MCI) of India published in the Gazette of India on 08.10.2016 (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002,Clause – 1.5 is substituted in terms of Notification as under -“Every physician should prescribe drugs with generic names legibly and preferably in capital letters and he/she shall ensure that there is a rational prescription and use of drugs”. This was reinforced again by MCI through letter No.MCI-211(2) (Gen)/2017Ethics/104728, dated 21/04/2017, with suitable disciplinary action by the concerned State Medical Council/ MCI, against any doctor

religion is called the religion of love did so many commendable works and one such personality was Late Mother Teresa who received Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in the country. Her tireless work was not because for the love of her religion but for the cause of the poor, downtrodden people and for the suffering souls. The Muslim clerics should not teach any hate speeches to fellow followers that may incite communal disharmony. Mainland Indians especially the Hindus should understand the truest concept of the word SECULARISM. The BJP at the centre together with RSS which is one of the staunchest Hindutva outfit should focus more on good policies and pro-
grammes for the minority Christians instead of observing good governance day (on CHRISTMAS day), international Yoga day (on FATHERS day), digital India week (on EASTER Sunday) and hope many more to comes in the coming days targeting only Christian events. Our honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi is applauded by the people for his developmental activities but when his religious views are concerned religious intolerance is clearly visible. One such incident was a Ghar Waspi (home coming) programme where the Christians were reconverted to Hinduism. This was happened right after his assumption to office. We, the Naga can

be lured easily by money and it is possible that our religion can be bought with money by deploying RSS in and around Nagaland with great schemes or with financial assistance. Be aware of this kind of situation. A time will come to us when cows will be considered more important and valuable than Christians as we had witnessed recently killing of innocent cow traders in mainland India. The recent political development in Gujarat, Rajasthan and U.P where the draconian law was enacted by sentencing life imprisonment and death penalty for killing of cow. Now their next target is to go for blanket ban on slaughtering of cow all over the Indian states. When we
look back to history, during Vedic and post Vedic period cows were used for sacrificing to God. But during Mauryan and Gupta Period cow initially started to be regarded as a sacred animal and during the era of sultanate period and Mughal period cow started to represent as a sign of unity for the Hindus against Muslim rule. And now cow is worship by the Hindus. It is good that we remain happy with what we have instead of selling out our name for other religion. If we overcome this situation then our greatest rewards will follow us with good merits. Otherwise the wrath of God upon us can be unbearable and on doomsday our name will be judged.
In the 11th and 12th century, Europe Christians called upon themselves as Crusaders defended and fought for the survival of Jerusalem against Saladin the great Muslim ruler of that time. It is much better for us to die in the name of religion rather than selling out our commitment to Jesus Christ for a hefty amount of money like Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus. Therefore it is high time for the Nagas to be united as one in the name of Jesus and send out a strong message against any communal forces, any odds and evil plan and anyone who have sinister design to crush our spirit. Let us all alert for our common cause. Yarangchang Imchen

Saturday marks the 40th day of the ongoing protest of the Tamil Nadu farmers in Delhi. It is being led by the chief of the National South Indian Rivers Inter-Linking Farmers’ Association, P Ayyakannu. Farm loan waiver, adequate monetary compensation to the farmers affected by drought are two of the key demands of the Tiruchirappalli-based organisation.

C h e nn a i , A p r 2 2 (IANS): The Tamil Nadu government’s attempt to cover the water stored in Vaigai Dam in Madurai with thermocol sheets to prevent evaporation shows the officials lack of knowledge about water cycle and ecology, said an environmental activist. On Friday Minister for Cooperation Sellur K Raju inaugurated the programme to cover the vast sheet of Vaigai Dam water with thermocol sheets at an outlay of Rs 10 lakh. According to an official in the Public Works Department (PWD), the idea was to spread the thermocol sheets on 200 sq metres of water surface on a trial basis to prevent water evaporation.

On this count, he said, people from all religions -- Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians -- are unanimous on prohibition. “We need to prohibit alcohol if we want to usher in change and ensure allround development of India,” Nitish Kumar urged. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had imposed total prohibition in Bihar from April 1, 2016. He said many were sceptical about his move and talked of huge revenue losses to the state due to prohibition. “We find that the GST is expected to raise overall Indian welfare, and is projected to be an inclusive policy in that it would be welfare improving for all Indian states,” the paper said. The model suggests that the GST would lead to real GDP gains of 4.2% under the baseline assumptions, driven by a surge in factory production. Growth is also driven by an increase in both domestic and international trade, it said. The GST is also expected to increase international competitiveness of Indian companies, thus helping the country expand external trade by 32%.
A note of caution
“As a first order effect, the GST lowers internal trade barriers in this analysis, which improves internal trade by 29%....,” according to the paper authored by Eva Van Leemput and Ellen A Wiencek and published on March 24.

NEW DELHI, APR 22 (PTI): India’s changeover to the goods and services tax (GST) has resonated with the Fed: A research note at the US central bank reckons that the biggest indirect tax reforms since Independence could enhance the country’s gross domestic product by up to 4.2%, or Rs 6.5 lakh crore — a sum greater than the central government’s annual borrowing. Apart of Federal Reserve System’s series of International Financial Discussion Papers (IFDP), the research note says that the potential gains to GDP — one of the most bullish growth estimates on the reform measure to date — will be underpinned by a surge in manufacturing output, something New Delhi has been trying to achieve for a while. An estimate by economic think tank NCAER had earlier projected an increase of 1-2% in GDP after GST is implemented.

State Hindustan Scouts and Guides chief commissioner Rev. Fr. Dr. Sojan Puthankudy exhorted the gathering and underlined the need for change so as to build a new model that made the existing model obsolete. He said the HS&G movement focussed on building up values and discipline projects itself as a catalyst in forming the young people to be God fearing, disciplined and value based. Puthankudy said the movement was also focused on building up supreme confidence in the power of the young people and in guiding them to be adventurous. He said the movement also sought to build up leadership and endeavoured to educate students how to get out of the groove of selfishness and to selflessness. On the occasion two students artists presented a painted picture of Governor, P.B. Acharya. The governor also released a module for scout and guides.

Apple recently acquired a personal health data startup called Gliimpse which is designed to help people aggregate their medical information. Sage Bionetworks, a non-profit research organisation, has been a major proponent of Apple’s ResearchKit software, which is designed to make it easier for medical researchers to launch mobile-based studies. A secret team of biomedical engineers at Apple is also working on an initiative to develop sensors that can non-invasively and continuously monitor blood sugar levels to better treat diabetes. If such sensors are successfully developed, that would be a breakthrough as it is highly challenging to track glucose levels accurately without piercing the skin. It can help millions of people turn devices like Apple Watch into a musthave.

France goes to polls under cloud of latest terror attack
A woman walks past electoral posters displaying the French presidential candidates. The campaign has focused on the economic crisis and high unemployment rate at the heart of the public agenda (the very same issues that made President François Hollande so unpopular), along with immigration. But anxieties about
France’s security situation were only exacerbated following a shooting on Thursday night on the ChampsElysees shopping boulevard in central Paris, in which one policeman was killed and two others were wounded. It is currently unclear
how the event will affect the French election, but candidates have been jockeying for an advantage in the contest by emphasizing their security credentials throughout the campaign period. Some of the candidates later clashed over whether official campaigning should be brought to a full stop in light of the incident. “In this current context, there are no grounds to continue campaigning. We must first show our solidarity with the police,” conservative candidate Francois Fillon told the France 2 show a day after the Paris attack. Fillon, who has sought to reinforce his credentials as a hard-liner on security, added that fighting “Islamist totalitarianism” must be the priority for the next president. Far-left politician Jean-Luc Melenchon said the candidates should not cave in to violence. “As we wait for more definite information, I think we need to attend to our duties as citizens: no panic, we shouldn’t interrupt our democratic process,” Melenchon said.
closely watched outcome
Security fears had already re-emerged in the run-up to a first ballot after an attack thought to have been targeted at some of the candidates was foiled earlier in the week. France has been hit by a series of deadly attacks since 2015. Le Pen, who has stressed her plans to curb immigration in the last week as she tries to rally support, on Thursday night also seized on the latest incident. “I don’t want us to get used to Islamist terrorism,” she told France 2. “We have to stop being naive. We can’t leave our children a country that is not able to defend them.” Earlier in the evening, Macron also weighed in on the shooting, saying the president’s No.1 job was to protect people. The election will decide the direction of France’s 2.2 trillion euro economy, which vies with Britain for the rank of fifth largest in the world. With eurospectics Le Pen and Melenchon in the race, the outcome could have a bearing on France’s place in Europe. A Harris Interactive poll on Thursday showed Macron and Le Pen still in front, with the gap a bit wider than before. The centrist inched ahead to 24.5 percent while Le Pen was a bit weaker at 21 percent. Fillon - an early favorite before his campaign hit the rocks following nepotism allegations that he has denied - scored 20 percent, meaning he was now gaining on Le Pen. Melenchon was stable on 19 percent.
Trump dismisses Indian-American Surgeon Genral
Vivek Murthy WASHINGTON, APR 22 (PTI): Vivek Murthy, the first Indian-American appointed by the Obama regime as the Surgeon General, has been dismissed by the Trump administration to bring new leadership to the vital public health sector. Murthy, 39, has been replaced by his deputy, Rear Admiral Sylvia Trent-Adams, one of the first nurses to serve as surgeon general. “Murthy, the leader of the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, was asked to resign from his duties as Surgeon General after assisting in a smooth transition into the new Trump administration,” the US Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement yesterday. “Murthy has been relieved of his duties as Surgeon General and will continue to serve as a member of the Commissioned Corps,” the statement said. Murthy was confirmed as US Surgeon General in December 2014. It was not immediately clear why Murthy was relieved from duty, the New York Times said while noting that employees at the Department of Health and Human Services privately expressed surprise at his sudden departure. Murthy, the 19th Surgeon General and the first Indian American to hold this post said in a Facebook Post that it was an honour and privilege to work for this prestigious position.

Pakistan man eats leaves for 25 years LAHORE, APR 22 (PTI): A man in Pakistan’s Punjab province has been surviving on fresh leaves and wood for the last 25 years and has never fallen ill. Mehmood Butt, 50, who hails from Gujranwala district in Punjab province, started eating on leaves at the age of 25 as he had no work and could not afford a basic meal. “There was too much poverty in my family. Everything was beyond limit and it was very difficult for me to get a meal, so I thought it is better to eat wood rather than begging on a street,” Butt said. “Eating wood and leaves has become my habit now,” Butt was quoted as saying by ‘The News International’.
day’s voting will be followed by a runoff on May 7 between the top two candidates. The first poll conducted entirely after Thursday’s attack suggested Le Pen had gained some ground on Macron. While he was still seen winning the first round with 24.5 percent, his score slipped half a percentage point while Le Pen’s rose by one to 23 percent. Conservative Francois Fillon, a former prime minister, and the far left’s JeanLuc Melenchon were both down half a percentage point on 19 percent in the Odoxa poll for the newspaper Le Point. The attack on the Champs-Elysees boulevard in the very heart of the capital added a new source of unpredictability to an election that will decide the management of France’s 2.2 trillion euro economy, which vies with Britain for the rank of fifth largest in the world.
COLOGNE (GERMANY), APR 22 (AGENCIES): Divisions among German nationalists erupted Saturday as delegates from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party rejected an appeal by one of their leaders to seek a pragmatic political path instead of turning into a “fundamental opposition” party. While tensions brewed inside the AfD party convention in the western German city of Cologne, outside the hotel hundreds of left-wing demonstrators tried to block about 600 AfD party members from entering. The delegates needed massive police protection to get into the convention, and protesters injured one police officer Saturday morning while trying to block the hotel. Authorities had 4,000 police officers on the ground to prevent a violent escalation of anti-populist rallies by an expected 50,000 left-wing protesters. Speaking before AfD members, nationalist politician Frauke Petry said the party needed to set the course for a “spiritualmoral change” in Germany and the rest of Europe. But a majority of the delegates rejected a vote on the party’s future path that she had suggested. In comparison, Joerg Meuthen, a more far-right party leader who is one of Petry’s rivals, was cheered strongly when he lashed out at German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her government’s migration policy. Meuthen said when he’s out in his own city he barely sees Germans out in the streets anymore — only migrants.

founder Bernd Lucke, an economics professor, shifting the party’s focus from economic issues to immigration and Islam. AfD’s poll ratings soared with the influx of migrants to Germany in late 2015 and early 2016. However, they have sagged in recent months as the issue faded from headlines and the party became increasingly mired in infighting with Petry and her husband Marcus Pretzell on one side against other senior figures even further on the right. Petry, 41, also irked some rivals by leading an effort to expel Bjoern Hoecke, AfD’s regional leader in eastern Thuringia state, after he suggested that Germany stop acknowledging and atoning for its Nazi past. Even though she won’t be her party’s top candidate, Petry did not hint at any plans to step down as party chairwoman. German political parties choose lead candidates for elections who generally dominate their campaigns and, in the case of bigger parties, compete to become chancellor. Her move has left AfD without such a figurehead.

The convention takes place days after Petry said that she won’t be her party’s top candidate in Germany’s Sept. 24 general election, a move seen by many as a consequence of party leaders’ infighting about the future direction of the AfD. The populist, anti-immigrant party is seeking to enter the national parliament for the first time in that vote. Despite earlier fears, by noon most of the leftwing rallies in Cologne were peaceful. The state governor of North RhineWestphalia, Hannelore Kraft, who was attending one of the demonstrations, praised protesters for their activism. “There are many upright democrats here and they say clearly: We want to remain as we are — a diverse, an open, a tolerant country,” Kraft said. PARIS, APR 22 (AGENCIES): The killing of a policeman by a suspected Islamist militant pushed national security to the top of the French political agenda on Friday, two days before the presidential election. With the first round of voting in the two-stage election taking place on Sunday, far-right nationalist candidate Marine Le Pen promised tougher immigration and border controls to beat “Islamist terrorism” if elected. Centrist Emmanuel Macron, who narrowly leads a tight race ahead of Le Pen, said the solutions were not as simple as she suggested, and that there was “no such thing as zero risk”. Anyone who said otherwise was irresponsible, said Macron, a former economy minister in the government that Le Pen has repeatedly criticized for its security record. There are four leading candidates in a race that is still too close to call. Sun-

PARIS, APR 22 (AGENCIES): Voting in France’s presidential election will kick off Sunday morning under the tragic auspices of yet another terror attack that hit Paris earlier in the week, heightening concerns centered on security issues in an already tight race with no clear front-runner. The polls will open on Sunday at 8 a.m., and will close 12 hours later. If, as seems certain, no one receives 50% of the ballots, the top two contenders will face off two weeks later. Surveys indicate that 23% of voters plan to vote for centrist Emmanuel Macron, 22% support far-right Marine Le Pen, 20% support center-right François Fillon and 19% are for far-left JeanLuc Melanchon. Supporters of Benoit Hamon, candidate of the ruling center-left Socialist Party, have lost nearly all hope of seeing their candidate make it to the May 7 runoff.

Apart from being a successful entrepreneur, he is also a Patron of Arts, or in this case of mixed martial arts. They have collectively pooled in their personal resources to give birth to Yoddha Fighting Championship. Yo d d h a F i g h t i n g Championship is the first amateur platform for MMA athletes in the country and come 28-29th of April, this unique promotion along with co-organizers Wise Guy Entertainment -India will host the finals for its inaugural season. A season that kicked off in November 2014 in Dimapur and has since travelled across the country to Mumbai, Bengaluru, Bhubaneshwar and Delhi – giving over 250 amateur MMA athletes an opportunity to gain experience inside the cage and aggregating the deafening cheers of MMA neophytes all over the country. MMA existed in India before Team Relentless decided to start their journey, but it is this very journey
that has provided the real chance for the sport to grow, in the form of an architecture that provides a platform of opportunity at the beginning of the career of these amateur MMA athletes who count the likes of Jon Jones, Conan McGregor, Fedor Emelianenko, Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson, Georges St Pierre as their Gods of combat. Most of the fighters have come from traditional martial art backgrounds like Taekwondo, Muay Thai, Judo, Brazilian Jiujitsu and various forms of traditional wrestling. The idea according to the team is to give the winners of YFC Season One Finals a chance to compete in international promotions. The Season One finals will see 24 fights in the tournament format and will see champions declared in six weight categories. The two day event will also have 13 exhibition matches and 3 pro bouts that will feature the likes of Sushovan Ghosh and American pro wrestler Nick Kilstien from the Team Relentless stable.

The Russian, controversially given a wildcard, will play the 34 year-old world No 35 who has not been in good form. She has lost her last two first rounds and last won a match back in the early half of March at Indian Wells, where she made the second round. If Sharapova wins then there is the fascinating prospect of a second-round grudge match against Agnieszka Radwanska, the Pole who has been among those players to criticise the decision to give her wildcard entries after a 15-month suspension for doping. On Friday, she was described as a ‘journeyman’ by Sharapova’s agent, Max Eisenbud. First Radwanska will have to beat Ekaterina Makarova. Jo Konta, who has also been given a wildcard, is in the opposite half of the draw to Sharapova so cannot play her before the final. Konta plays a qualifier first up. In pressure situations, their past performances really helped them cope with that pressure and come up with good results,” said captain cum goalkeeper PR Sreejesh. He added, “But I think now, our team has experienced youngsters, who can turn the matches around. In tournaments like these its important to beat top teams like Australia so that you can develop your confidence.” While India will play with a mix of young and experienced players in the team, Australia, too, will come with a young squad. “Australia come in as a new team, with new coaching staff a and mix of young and experienced players. We play them in the third match so we get to watch two of their matches before we play against them. That way
we will get to make analyses of their game and make specific plans to play against them,” stated Oltmans. India had a 40-day long national camp where the team was put through a tough regime involving nearly five-six hours of intense training. “We deliberately had a 40-day camp. Physically I wanted them to be at a good starting point so there was a lot of emphasis on that and I believe we have succeeded in achieving that level. “With new players coming into the squad, the understanding between players had to grow. New style of play needed to be adapted to and the best place to get confirmations is in big tournaments and we go to Malaysia to test ourselves,” concluded the 62-year-old Oltmans. India begin their campaign against Great Britain on April 29.

Konta levels GB tie with Romania; Nastase sent off
Johanna Konta speaks to the umpire during her Fed Cup match against Sorana Cirstea on Saturday.
L o nd o n, A p r 2 2 (Agencies): Romania captain Ilie Nastase was banned from the Fed Cup tie against Britain after an incident that left Johanna Konta in tears and her match suspended. In Konta’s match against Sorana Cirstea, Nastase was sent off after swearing at the umpire, Konta and her captain Anne Keothavong. The world number seven lost her serve in the next game and was visibly upset before play was halted for 25 minutes. The International Tennis Federation is investigating Nastase’s conduct. The world governing body said it is looking “into this matter as well as previous comments made by Mr Nastase during the week”. Nastase - a former world number one - had caused controversy in the build-up to the tie after being heard making a derogatory comment about Serena Williams’ unborn child. The incident that led to him being dismissed on Saturday happened when Cirstea was 2-1 up in the second set of the World Group II play-off tie.
After Konta and Keothavong had complained of calling out from the crowd at 1-1, Nastase was involved in a discussion with officials in which he reportedly used foul and abusive language. He was sent off the court by referee Andreas Egli and, after initially taking a seat in the stands, was then escorted back to the locker room. Konta went 3-1 down after her serve was broken in the next game and was in tears before the umpire suspended play. Romania player Simona Halep spoke to the crowd during the suspension to try to calm the situation down. When play resumed, Konta won five games in a row to win the match 6-2 6-3, levelling the tie at 1-1. “Mr Nastase was asked to leave the court by ITF referee Andreas Egli for unsportsmanlike conduct, having already received two official warnings,” said an ITF statement. “Mr Nastase was
also removed from the grounds due to his serious misconduct. His accreditation was removed and he will play no further part in the tie.” On Friday, Halep was answering a question in English about American world number two Williams’ pregnancy when 70-year-old Nastase turned to one of his other team members and added in Romanian: “Let’s see what colour it has. Chocolate with milk?” Watson beaten by Halep Earlier on Saturday, Romania took the lead when Halep won 26 of the last 33 points on the way to comfortably beating Heather Watson 6-4 6-1. World number five Halep increased her intensity at 4-4 and broke Watson to love before serving out to take the opening set for the hosts. Watson, ranked 113, struggled to cope with her rival as she lost her serve twice to love in the second set.

Aizawl FC inch closer to I-League title
Players of Aizawl FC celebrate infront of their supporters after beating Mohun Bagan in Aizawl on Saturday.
Aizawl, Apr 22 (PTI): Unheralded Mizoram side Aizawl FC beat Indian football giants Mohun Bagan by a solitary goal in a highly anticipated match to be within touching distance of their maiden ILeague title in Aizawl on Saturday. Local player Zohmingliana Ralte scored the all-important goal at the 83rd minute in the penultimate round match in front of football crazy Aizawl fans at the packed Rajiv Gandhi Stadium and steered the team to the verge of creating history. This stunning win put Aizawl on 36 points from 17 games, three more than Mohun Bagan (33 points from 17 matches), and
now they need just a draw in their final league match against Shillong Lajong away from home on 30 April to bag the coveted I-League crown in their second season. Mohun Bagan, who won their first I-League title two season’s back, can still be the champions if they beat Chennai City FC at home in their final match on 30 April and Aizawl lose to Shillong Lajong, the same day. It was a remarkable turnaround for Aizawl FC, coached by Khalid Jamil, who finished eighth in their debut season last year and were almost kicked out of the I-League. If they win the ILeague title on 30 April,
they will become the first club from Northeast India to do so. To d a y ’ s m a t c h , which saw a big build-up in a state where people are crazy about football, can be described as scrappy at best with the wet pitch following a heavy downpour before the game and a poor visibility due to the thick cloud cover over the stadium. But the second half was much better with the cloud cover receding and the home side pressing hard for a goal with spells of domination over the visiting side. The hosts piled on the humiliation in the second half with Chhetri scoring his second goal in the 66th minute. Hull and Swans win; Boro thrashed
Lo n d o n, A p r 2 2 (Agencies): Second half goals from Lazar Markovic and Sam Clucas gave 10man Hull City a priceless 2-0 win over Watford at the KCOM Stadium. The Tigers knew they needed nothing less than victory at home to opponents with little to play for this season but their task got much harder when Oumar Niasse was dismissed for a challenge on M’Baye Niang midway through the first half. However, the hosts remained the better side and took the lead on 62 minutes when on-loan Lazar Markovic scored at the second attempt after a counterattack. Sam Clucas sealed the win when he fired an unstoppable effort from 30 yards past the helpless Heurelho Gomes. The result leaves Hull still two points above the drop zone after 18placed Swansea’s win over Stoke, while Watford stay in 10th place. Swansea City secured their first league win in seven games as they ran out 2-0 winners over Stoke City at the Liberty Stadium. Fernando Llorente’s early header gave the Welsh side the lead on 10 minutes.

The Potters had a great opportunity to level matters as the game entered its closing stages but Marko Arnautovic blazed over from he penalty spot after Xherdan Shaqiri had been tripped by Federico Fernandez. Just a minute later Paul Clement’s side doubled their advantage when Tom Carroll’s deflected effort beat the returning Jack Butland. Although Swansea remain in the bottom three, the victory will give them a huge boost in their battle to avoid the drop. Middlesbrough looked doomed to relegation after
they were hammered 4-0 by Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium. The in-form Josh King put the Cherries ahead after 96 seconds before Benik Afobe finished on 16 minutes to make it 2-0. Boro midfielder Gaston Ramirez received his marching orders on 20 minutes for two yellow cards - the first one for a dive. Marc Pugh marked his 250th appearance for the club by curling in the third on 65 minutes before Charlie Daniels wrapped up a comfortable win five minutes later. Eddie Howe’s side are
up to 12th in the table while Boro remain 19th, nine points from safety. West Ham and Everton played out a dull scoreless draw at the London Stadium. A win would have sent the Toffees into the top five - at least for 24 hours but they rarely looked like getting it, waiting until the 70th minute before having their first shot on goal. The Hammers had more shots on goal but never really looked like breaking the deadlock and they move up to 13th while Ronald Koeman’s stay in sixth place.

Rafael Nadal
Monte Carlo, Apr 22 (Agencies): Rafael Nadal beat David Goffin 6-3, 6-1 on Saturday in a controversial semifinal at the Monte Carlo Masters to put himself on the brink of a 10th title at the clay court showpiece. The 30-year-old defending champion will face Spanish compatriot Albert
Ramos-Vinolas, who defeated Lucas Pouille 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, in Sunday’s final. Nadal is also chasing his first ATP title since last April in Barcelona and the 70th of his career. However, Saturday’s semifinal turned on a controversial incident in the first set, when the chair umpire may have missed a ball mark and ended up awarding Nadal a point which denied Goffin a 4-2 lead in the opener. The crowd tur ning against him, Nadal was the subject of whistles and jeers while the heart went out of Goffin who had made the semifinals by seeing off world No 2 Novak Djokovic on Friday. Ramos-Vinolas, the
29-year-old 15th seed who had knocked out No 1 Andy Murray and Marin Cilic, had never before even reached a Masters 1000 semifinal. “To play Rafa, you never know. If he plays unbelievable, he’s going to beat you,” Ramos-Vinolas said. “I have more confidence. It’s impossible to negate that. Since Roland Garros (2016) maybe, I’m playing better. In South America (February) I did a final, two semifinals, one quarterfinal. “The results are going better.” The Spaniard, who saved seven of nine break points, had come to the principality with only three previous victories from 29 matches against top 10 opponents.
