Terror attacks: Bloody Easter Sunday in Sri Lanka
C O LO M B O, A P R 2 1 (AGENCIES): A string of eight devastating blasts, including suicide attacks, struck Churches and luxury hotels frequented by foreigners in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, killing at least 215 people and shattering a decade of peace in the island nation since the end of the brutal civil war with the LTTE. Around 500 people, including Indians, were also injured in the attacks. The blasts— one of the deadliest attacks in the country’s history— targeted St Anthony’s Church in Colombo, St Sebastian’s Church in the western coastal town of Negombo and Zion Church in the eastern town of Batticaloa around 8.45 am (local time) as the Easter Sunday mass were in progress, police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera said. Explosions were reported from three five-star hotels — the Shangri-La, the Cinnamon Grand and the Kingsbury in Colombo. Director of the National Hospital Dr. Anil Jasinghe identified 11 of the 27 foreign nationals killed in the coordinated attacks believed to be carried out by a single group. They foreign
MCCI takes up ‘demand notice’ issue DIMAPUR, APR 21 (NPN): Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) Sunday said that the business body has taken cognizance of the demand notice issued to a particular section of the business community in Mokokchung by a Naga Political Group (NPG). According to MCCI president Tsukti Longkumer and general secretary Limalenden Longkumer the NPG had issued a demand notice to “contribute” a sum of Rs.10,00,000 to its chaplee ministry against “dealership/shop/various business establishment” on or before April 30, 2019. Taking note of this, MCCI held an executive council meeting on April 19, 2019 and strongly resolved that, as reiterated earlier on multiple occasions, “illegal taxations shall not be allowed in Mokokchung and that the said demand shall not be entertained under any circumstances, whatsoever.” MCCI viewed the latest demand notice as a serious violation and infringement on the rights of the business community, and asserted that MCCI shall never compromise with it.

nationals include three Indians, three British nationals, two Chinese and one each from Poland, Denmark, Japan, Pakistan, America, Morocco and Bangladesh perished in the mayhem. India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, quoting official reports from Colombo, identified the Indians as Lokashini, Narayan Chandrashekhar and Ramesh. No group has claimed responsibility for Sunday’s
attacks so far. Suicide bombers were involved in at least two of the deadly blasts that ripped through churches and hotels, according to police and hotel officials. Briefing reporters, Gunasekera said the police was not able to confirm at the moment if they were all suicide attacks. He, however, said that one of the blasts at the Katuwapitiya (Negombo) church had signs of being what looked like a suicide attack.
An unnamed official said a suicide bomber blew himself up at the restaurant of the Cinnamon Grand hotel. Later in the day, a powerful blast in the capital’s southern suburb near the Colombo Zoo killed two persons, Gunasekera said. When a police team entered a house in the Colombo north suburb of Orugodawatta to conduct a search, a suicide bomber blew himself up causing a concrete floor of a two-
storey building to crash on them, killing three policemen in the eighth blast, police said. Soon after the eighth blast, the government imposed curfew with immediate effect. The curfew will be in force indefinitely until further notice, officials said. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe termed the blasts as “cowardly attacks” and said his government was working to “contain the situation.” “I call upon all Sri
Lankans during this tragic time to remain united and strong... The government is taking immediate steps to contain this situation,” he tweeted. President Maithripala Sirisena has appealed for calm. “I have been shocked by these totally unexpected incidents. The security forces have been asked to take all action necessary,” Sirisena said. Sri Lanka Police spokesperson has said that 13 suspects were arrested in connection with the attacks. Ten of those detained have been handed over to the CID. Earlier in the day, state Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewardene said several persons were arrested in connection with the blasts. Discussing the attackers, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said: “So far the names that have come up are local.” However, he said that authorities will also investigate whether the attackers had “overseas links.” Meanwhile, Wickremesinghe admitted that they were aware of the explo-
sions but didn’t take adequate precautions. He had also informed earlier that eight people were arrested in connection with the blasts. Wellawatte police also seized and apprehended a van and a driver believed to have been used to transport the suspects that carried out the bombings in Colombo today. In addition, Police also uncovered details regarding a house in the Panadura Nort Police division which is believed to have been used by several suspects as a temporary shelter. Investigations are continuing. Sri Lankan authorities have blocked most social media services in the country following attacks
Sunrise Service marks Easter Sunday in Kohima Islamist extremists blamed for SL attacks: report

KOHIMA, APR 21 (NPN): To mark the beginning of Easter Sunday, Kohima Baptist Pastors’ Fellowship (KBPF) organised the annual Easter Sunday Sunrise Service at the World WarII cemetery here at 5 am on Sunday. Hundreds of people, including those from other dominations, gathered at the historic war cemetery to celebrate the resurrection of Lord Jesus Christ. In his Easter message, Asia Pacific Baptist Fed-
eration general secretary Rev Vesekhoyi Tetseo said Christ had triumphed over death and resurrection was available for all those who repent. He remarked, “We must acknowledges our shortcomings and seek God’s mercy today.” Quoting biblical verse from Romans 3:10-12, he stated “There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one
who does good, not even one.” While reminding the gathering that Christ’s crucification was not because of the crime like that of the two thieves who were cursed, but it was love that crucified Him. He also urged the people to go out and spread the word of Christ, even as he reminded the congregation that despite the increase of Christianity in Asia, there are millions in Asia and the world who need the gospel. “It is you, me who
must spread the gospel,” he exhorted. In his message, Kohima Village Council chairman Dr Neiphi Kire said Easter was a time for celebration, a celebration for resurrection of Jesus Christ. He added that Christians all over the world celebrate the rising of Christ on this day. Commenting on the location of the service, Kire said a place like this was meaningful as the area witnessed thousands of people who had sacrificed their lives during the fierce battle of Kohima. He said people in Nagaland enjoy freedom of religion unlike some other countries. “We should be grateful to God that we are free to worship God as we like,” he added. Earlier, the service was led by KBPF president Dr Kevichalie Metha, scripture reading and prayer by pastor Kohima Ao Baptist Arogo, Tiatoshi Longkumer, Nagamese Baptist Churches, Kohima Area (Youth) and Kohima Town Baptist Women Union presented special songs on the occasion.
C olombo, A pr 2 1 (IANS): Islamist extremists carried out the first six major suicide bombings in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, The Daily Mirror reported. Investigators said that two terrorists had on Saturday checked into Room 616 of The Shangri-La hotel, one
of the three Colombo hotels where blasts took place in quick succession, the English language daily reported. CCTV footage revealed that the suspects detonated the bombs in the cafeteria and on the corridor of the hotel, it said. Investigators suspect that C-4 explosives
weighing 25 kg were used for the bombings at the hotel. A suicide bomber, identified as Mohamed Azzam Mohamed, waited patiently in a queue for the Easter Sunday breakfast buffet at Sri Lanka’s Cinnamon Grand hotel before setting off explosives strapped to his back.
YAA resolves to inspect institutes and works DIMAPUR, APR 21 (NPN): To ensure quality education and quality workmanship in Yimchungrü’s territory, Yimchungrü Akherü Arihako (YAA) will be conducting an extensive inspection tour under the theme “Reaching out to revamp”. The frontal students’ organisation of the Yimchungrü tribe explained that this has been necessitated to assess the overall developmental activities, lapses in various welfare funds under the Central and State schemes and check the regularity of teachers within its jurisdiction. In a press release, YAA president S Yansomong and general secretary Achung Jangleh explained that taking serious note of the prevailing poor performance of schools, the association has resolved to show “zero tolerance” towards proxy/substitute teachers and shall strictly enforce “no work, no pay” policy on teachers who are found
absent without prior permission from the authorities. In case of study leave granted by the department, a substitute teacher should be arranged as per the directive of the department. Such arrangement should be made in advance with an official communication to school managing committee (SMC) with a copy to the concerned students’ union, it demanded. In this regard, all its federating units have been directed to ensure that composition and functioning of SMCs are in sync with the Communitisation Act Handbook/guidelines. Being the stakeholders, the federating units have been asked to report to YAA office in the event of any lapses detected in Mid Day Meal, distribution of uniforms, textbooks and other related issues pertaining to students’ welfare for onward submission to the department concerned. Referring to
rampant transfer and posting of government employees, thereby causing undue hardships to both the employees and the public, YAA said there are instances wherein the employees were transferred out without any reliever either through political favouritism or due to some extraneous consideration. The association asserted that it would strictly monitor and would not hesitate to forward those erring employees to the department concerned for appropriate action. Furthermore, all contractors/ firms operating within the Yimchungrü’s territory have also been asked to ensure “quality workmanship” and complete their work within the stipulated time. In this regard, YAA said it will remain vigilant and assured to extend all possible support and cooperation to the contractors/firms for work execution as per specification/ (Cont’d on p-7) DPR.
