circles in the state, the chief minister said the people could get full benefit of the expanded administration only if government officers manned their offices regularly. He lauded those officers, including young officers, doing well in their field postings. However, he said it would be deluding to think that people were fully satisfied with “our” efforts. The chief minister also reminded the members of the civil services about the importance of maintaining discipline and loyalty to the government. He also asked the members to maintain the government “conduct rules” at all times with absolute integrity and devotion to duty and to refrain from doing anything that was unbecoming of a government servant. Fur ther, the chief minister emphasised the need to turn “our” focus on some urgent reforms such as bringing the growth of expenditure on salaries and pensions under control to enable substantially improve of the infrastructure and the delivery of public services to the people. Mero disclosed this at the outreach awareness programme on cold chain organized by Progress Harmony Development (PHD) chamber of commerce and industry in association with National Centre for Cold Chain Development (NCCD) at Hotel Japfü Kohima. To set up cold chain facilities various infrastructures like power supply, good road connectivity and marketing linkage was necessary, Mero said. However, the commissioner and secretary

viewed that the completion of the Dimapur-Kohima stretch of NH 39 will enable the state to set up cold chain facilities across the state by 2020. He also encouraged the entrepreneurs to take up project on food processing units with assistance from government and banks. Director Progress Harmony Development chamber Dr. Ranjeet Mehta in his address informed that cold chain industry was growing at the rate of 15% and that there was a huge demand in the country. He said that since Nagaland has potential of season and off season crops and vegetables, construction of cold storage was necessary. Mission director MIDH Dr. R.E. Lotha, deputy director MSME-DI Nagaland Tali Longchar and joint director ICAR Nagaland Dr. D.J. Rajkhowa also addressed the gathering. Earlier, according to additional secretary, Industries and Commerce Department, Nagaland,

L Houchalie Viya, State government has urged the Ministry of Food Processing Industries to come out with mini food parks in the state as setting up of mega food parks was not possible due to certain constraints. Raj Bhavan does away NPCC questions NPF’s silence over issues State BJP warns against cyber frauds with beacon lights DIMAPUR, APR 21 (NPN): After Central government announced that no dignitary would be allowed to flaunt red beacons atop their vehicles from May 1, Nagaland Governor has removed red beacons from vehicles of Raj Bhavan. Welcoming the decision, Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya said “in a democratic country there is no room for VIP culture and all are equal before the law and should be treated equally.” He said red beacons had become a “lightning rod for public disgust at official corruption and the VVIP culture”. Acharya said many persons were misusing red lights on their vehicles for committing crimes in different parts of the country. They do so with impunity because police officials are mostly scared of checking vehicles with red lights, he added. “I welcome Prime Minster’s decision. I think it is high time, we need to get out of it”, Governor said and hoped that others would also take similar action. NPN adds: Some legislators have also removed the red beacons from their vehicles. Welcoming the decision, parliamentary secretary Shetoyi Sumi was among the few legislators who had voluntarily removed red beacons from his official vehicles.

DIMAPUR, APR 21 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president K. Therie has criticized the NPF-led government for choosing to remain silent over Centre’s directive to impose Hindi in schools and also on antiChristian actions and persecution across the country. Therie also went on to point out that the people have not heard of any special plan or non-plan assistance from the BJP-led government. As for CSSs funds, he said it was based on matching grant, while NEC and NLCPR are decided by the state priority list and rational allocations made to all NE states. “For a cup of tea or for a position of chair or money, Nagaland cannot bury our inherent unique culture and hard earned history, identity and religious freedoms,” he said. While NPF has been expecting huge funds from

the BJP government, he however said that till date the state had received only the 14th Finance Commission award. In this regard, he called upon every right thinking person and likeminded voter to fight the battle together. “It is only your vote that matters to save Nagaland. Your anger or my anger over imposition of Hindutva bears no meaning. Even if the whole of India accepts Hindutva, Nagaland cannot accept,” he said. He however clarified saying he had no objection/ question against any other fellow citizen for practicing a different faith, “nor expect them to question such means of my people”. He opined that people of Nagaland does not accept the principles and dreams of RSS and BJP, but were “with them expecting money and development.” “What is more important is a future, identity,

freedom and liberty. What if you have everything but lose your identity and freedom of faith?” he questioned. He asserted that Nagaland should reject BJP and advised NPF to seriously reconsider their alliance with BJP if there was any truth in regional identity. While narrating the story of a lady voter who had voted for a candidate at the same time assuring the other candidate that her whole heart was with him, Therie in this regard reminded the voters that “Your heart is with Jesus. Let your vote also be with Jesus.” Pointing out that religious divide was hurting Christians more than any other religion, he recalled how Rajeshwar Singh, leader of RSS backed Hindu outfit DJM, had declared that Christians would be eliminated from India by 2021.

DIMAPUR, APR 21 (NPN): BJP Nagaland unit on Friday said it has observed that lately cyber frauds in the form of posting wrongful nonauthentic morphed photos and videos, with out-of-context propaganda text, had been circulating on social media particularly on Whatsapp and Facebook to mislead the public and create social, religious and political disharmony. In a press release, BJP Nagaland general secretary (media) & spokesperson, Jaangsillung Gonmei, said that several inaccurate photos and its out-of-context messages were also about burned churches etc, associating them with BJP. Gonmei said the BJP Nagaland with concern undertook due verification and found that those social media photos were old, outdated and not in the context of the country and neither of BJP nor of recent times. He claimed that in reality those photos were old, morphed and of foreign origin. In one instance, he said the photos were of churches in Ban-

gladesh and Norway that had happened several years back for other accidental reasons. “Such photos are being morphed or photoshopped and attached with inflammatory text messages and posted/emailed as election related propagandas. One such set of photos and email were found to be an anti BJP propaganda email chain letter originating in 2010 and earlier,” party spokesperson said. In his regard, the BJP Nagaland unit has asserted that such falsification, factually incorrect or misleading information, defamation, identity theft, social political and religious propagandas, banking frauds, fake accounts, etc., fell under the category of cyber crime and liable for legal prosecutions with IPC, PIL or FIR. Therefore, the BJP Nagaland unit has cautioned the general public not to be duped by such lies and not to share or repost them without properly cross checking to avoid legal and police actions. “It is the responsibility of every citizen to seek only truth and ensure that only truth prevails,” it stated.

CM unveils memorial monolith to honour NLC UNTABA adopts resolutions on border issue Correspondent

KOHIMA, APR 21 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu unveiled a monolith in Kohima Friday, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Naga Labour Corps (NLC) who participated in the First World War. Speaking at the function Dr. Liezietsu recalled that it was exactly one hundred years on April 21, when the first batch of the NLC sailed to France in 1917 to participate in the 1st Great War theatre in Europe. The chief minister wondered what must have gone to the minds of the NLC as they sailed the oceans to distant lands to fight for the Crown. While reiterating that the First World War was certainly neither India’s war nor that of the Nagas, yet the NLC participated with feats of bravery during their battles in Europe and elsewhere.

Liezietsu recalled that around 2000 Nagas were recruited and were designated as NLC and according to some written documents, the NLC arrived in France in two main groups (688 men on 21 June 1917 and 992 men on 2 July 1917). H e s a i d t h e N LC

worked in various places around France on salvage work, road repairs among others and according to accounts, the Nagas (NLA) fearlessly carried out their designated duties despite facing the horrors of war in the battlefield and were at the forefront regardless of

the possibility of death all around them. The chief minister said that after the NLC returned, the building holding the list of Nagas who went to participate in the First World War were destroyed by Japanese bombings. However, he reiterated that the relative lack of historical records should not deter Nagas from commemorating their pioneering ventures which led to the subsequent state of Nagaland. The chief minister said after NLC returned from France, they formed a socio-political association called the Naga Club with branches in Kohima and Mokokchung immediately after their return. Then in 1918 and later in 1929 the Naga Club submitted a representation to the Simon Commission conveying the right of choice of self-determination of the Nagas when the British left India. DIMAPUR: Action Committee against Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) Nagaland held two public rallies on “clean election” at Pfutsero Town and Phek Town and an interactive session at Chizami Town Pfutsero on April 17 followed by interactive meeting with Chakhesang Baptist Church Council (CBCC) and Chakhesang Clean Election Movement. According to ACAUT media cell, in his speeches at public rallies, ACAUT chairman, Joel Naga stated that the though the clean election was initiated in the year 2012 by NBCC, the electoral malpractice in the 2013 election was the worst and the money spent was the highest. He cited Youth-Net’s survey report which says that Rs. 900 Crore was spent in 2013 elections. Therefore, he asserted that the ACAUT “as responsible stakeholders” have decided to join hands with the Church in tackling this menace. Jeol also hinted that if Nagas do not reform, 2018 elections would turn out to be the worst. Joel said that Nagas

could not go on complaining forever about the affairs of the state nor the “NBCC carry its clean election campaign forever like the Naga freedom movement”. He then called upon the youths to impact 2018. ACAUT, consultative body member, Khekiye K. Sema, questioned the Naga parents’ logic in sending their children to schools and universities whereas under the present circumstances, he said “our children have no future if we continue to sell our votes”. He said that after selling the votes, the public have no right to demand good roads, hospitals, good schools, etc. and complained that the candidates become Lucifer’s elder brother during elections. Khekiye lamented that vast numbers of proxy teachers who are hardly qualified to teach children, have done untold damage by creating an entire generation of equally illequipped children thereby creating a vicious cycle. He challenged the gathering, whether they would continue with old wines in new bottles or impact change by electing new wines fit for new

bottles. ACAUT convenor, public mobilization, Tia Longchar also spoke at the rallies. At the interactive meeting at Chizami Village various questions were posed to ACAUT members. The public rally at Pfutsero was organized by the CBCC along with the ACAUT Pfutsero unit and chaired by ACAUT Pfutsero Unit convenor, Wezote Kreo. Invocation was pronounced by Rev. Dr.N. IAS officer, said. He alleged that because of the lapses, the names of foreigners had entered the electoral rolls. All 26 elected members of the current council are tribals but Kathar said they were dependent on non-tribal voters. It may be mentioned here that the existing Assam Autonomous District Council (Constitution of District Council Rules) 1951 came into existence in accordance with an executive order no TDA/R/23/51 Dated October15, 1951. The order passed by Tribal Affairs Department of Assam Government stated that the Governor of Assam shall make rule for the first seating of the then Karbi Anglong District Council and subsequently, the elected members of the District Council will make rule for the statuary body themselves. Advisor of Sixth Schedule Implementation Committee and leader of the organisations, Jones Ingti Kathar said that the crux of the problem was the obsolete rules under which the first elections to KAAC were held in 1951-52.

Have lawful right to standardise names in Arunachal: China

‘Anomaly in Dhemaji bypoll counting’

Diphu, Apr 21: Around 100 naked Karbi youths Friday marched through the streets of Diphu town demanding Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) to prepare fresh electoral roll before conducting election and, alleged deprivation of their political rights. The naked demonstration was jointly organised by 24 tribal organizations- UKSA, NNKRAA, SSIC, KARAA, RNSU, DSU, KNA, KFA, KSYA, PFP, KASDO, UHDO, KAHTSCA, GGKSA, NKSA, TKSA, LKSA, SKSA, GKSA, JKSA, DKSA, Bangalore Karbi Society, Biswanath Chai’ali Karbi Students Association. Around hundred of young nude activists of various tribal originations marched out from the legendary Karbi Club at 12.30 PM holding banner and placard and shouting slogans. The naked protestors covered almost two kilometers through Diphu town before police in riot gear led by additional superintendent of police stopped them from

Beijing, Apr 21 (PTI): China said Friday that it was its “lawful right” to standardise official names for six places in Arunachal Pradesh, while its staterun media warned that India will pay “dearly” if it continues to play the Dalai Lama card. “China’s position on the eastern section of the India- China boundary is clear and consistent,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said here reacting to India’s assertion that Arunachal Pradesh is integral part of India. “Relevant names have been used by ethnic Momba and Tibetan Chinese who have lived here for generations. So it is a fact that cannot be changed. To standardise these names and publicise them is a legitimate measure based on our lawful right,” he said. Lu also countered India’s charge that China is inventing names to make its territorial claims over the area legal. India yesterday hit out at China for giving Chinese names to six areas of Arunachal Pradesh, saying assigning invented names to towns of the neighbour does not make illegal territorial claims legal.

proceeding further. The additional superintendent of police and a magistrate of Karbi Anglong Deputy Commissioner’s office later convinced the protestors to put on bare minimum clothes. Karbi Anglong was made an autonomous district under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. It is governed by the KAAC, which is likely to go to polls in May. Only law and order and the judiciary are beyond the KAAC’s powers and jurisdiction. The organisers said that by staging the protest, they wanted to bring their demands to the government’s notice. “Act and rules for the conduct of council election have not been made. The obsolete and defective rules of 1951 are still being used by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and state government. The non tribal emigrants have taken away political power of the schedule tribes guaranteed by the constitution of India. So the schedule tribes, who were covered with protective law, are now politically naked, hence this naked demonstration” said one of

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Gopal Baglay also asserted that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India. However, Lu did not react to Union Minister Venkiah Naidu’s remarks that Arunachal Pradesh has got an elected government. Earlier, the Global Times, in an op-ed article, said India will pay “dearly” if it continues the “petty game” of playing the Dalai Lama card and dismissed as “absurd” New Delhi’s reaction to Beijing renaming six places in Arunachal Pradesh.

Arunachal students’ body flays China’s move

The powerful All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) on Friday described Beijing’s move to rename six places in the state as an “uncalled for” and unwarranted act. It also termed Beijing’s move to rename six places in Arunachal in the backdrop of Dalai Lama’s recent visit to the state as intriguing and unnecessarily interfering into the internal affair of a sovereign nation. “History is the living witness that Arunachal was never a part of China at any given point of time,”

AAPSU President, Hawa Bagang said. “Such parochial approach and idea won’t have any takers in the state of Arunachal Pradesh who are one of the most patriotic people in the country,” he said. The Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs announced on April 14 on its website that it had standardised in Chinese characters, Tibetan and Roman alphabet names of six places in Arunachal Pradesh, which China calls “South Tibet”. The six names are Wo’gyainling, Mila Ri, Qoidengarbo Ri, Mainquka, Bumo La and Namkapub Ri. The staterun Global Times, which reported the ministry’s move on Tuesday, did not say which six places in Arunachal Pradesh were being referred to. China had strongly protested the visit of Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, to Arunachal Pradesh, especially Tawang earlier this month. Describing the development “uncalled for” and “unwarranted” act on part of the China government, Bagang said: “It is a deliberate plan to create confusion and commotion for their long term sinister design in the international community.”

JORHAT, Apr 21 (Agencies): The defeated Congress candidate in Dhemaji assembly bypoll Babul Sonowal on Thursday lodged a written complaint before the Dhemaji district returning officer, alleging that 85 polling votes were found not counted in the recently held byelection in the constituency. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Ripun Bora said, “We have found a difference of 85 votes in counting as compared to the number of voter turnout declared by the authorities. Our candidate has made written complaint before the district returning officer, Dhemaji seeking necessary steps.” He added, “Our party has decided to take up steps on the matter soon as requirement.” Returning officer and Deputy Commissioner (Dhemaji) R A Korati said, “After receiving the complaint, we are verifying the matter. I believe it may be a mistake of calculation if it was happened as alleged.” The bypoll to the Dhemaji seat was held on April 9, followed by its counting on April 13. BJP candidate Ranoj Pegu won the seat, defeating Congress candidate Babul Sonowal by 9,285 votes. Pegu got 75,217 votes while Sonowal got 65,932 votes.

Sarma blames Sangma of underdevelopment in M’laya Correspondent

Shillong, Apr 21: In a scathing attack on Congress-led government in Meghalaya, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday held Chief Minister Mukul Sangma responsible for the underdevelopment in the state. Rating the performance of the Mukul Sangma-led government as “zero”, the Assam Finance minister also termed as one worst performing states in the north-eastern states with people’s livelihood in the mountainous state is at stake following coal ban. “There should not be any iota of doubt that we symbolise Sangma as the person who is responsible for the under-development of Meghalaya and there will be no political talks and no question of entertaining him in the BJP,” he said. “Today people’s livelihood is at stake following

the coal ban … nobody is concern about livelihood. There is no expansion of education, health in districts of the state,” Sarma told journalists after addressing BJP’s state executive meeting. Had the central government not set any institutions in the state, he asked what would be the fate of the people of Meghalaya. Slamming the Congress government for its failure to set up state’s own medical and government college, the BJP leader asked, “Where is the medical college in Meghalaya, Where is the state university and you have only two government-owned colleges. I think he is not performing at all.” “I am sorry. I will rate him at zero. When you don’t see a medical college, a university and a good engineering college in 10 years of rule – measuring him from 1 to 10 would be disservice,” he said. Sarma, who is also the

chairman of North East Democratic Alliance – a non-Congress alliance, said that the BJP will also file a chargesheet to expose the wrong-doings of Mukul Sangma-led government. “ The c ha r ge s he e t will reflect the complete mismanagement of governance, corruptions, under-development and also many personal complicity of the Congress leadership in Meghalaya,” he informed. Ruling out to induct the incumbent Meghalaya Chief Minister into BJP, Sarma said, “Under no circumstances he (Sangma) will be admitted into the BJP. I should not be unfair to him; he has not even applied for his membership in the party also. Till Sangma loses his (assembly) seat in the next election; none of us will meet him.” The BJP leader even exuded confidence that Chief Minister, his brother Zenith M. Sangma, who is Sports and Youth Af-

fairs Minister and his wife Dikkanchi D.Shira will lose the assembly elections which is likely to be held in February-March next year. When asked whether BJP would ask Sangma to merge with the saffron party in case of a hung assembly in Meghalaya, Sarma said, “My own assessment will vote for Modi and development and we will have form our government, If at all that situation come, we have our friends, in Meghalaya who are known for antiCongress principles for decades.” “Why do we have to go Sangma. Our idea is to ensure the way Sangma’s wife lost in the Tura Lok Sabha bye-elections his bother and Sangma should also lose the elections. We will work 24 hours to ensure Sangma does not get elected as MLA at all and you should forget him of even forming the next government,” he added.

GUWAHATI, Apr 21 (Agencies): State finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said the state was able to register a growth of 21.6% in revenue collection during 2016-17, before the BJP-led government completed even a year in power. “The state’s total revenue collection in 2016-17 was Rs 15,620 crore against Rs 12, 848 crore in 2015-16. That means we collected Rs 2,772 crore more revenue than 2015-16. This 21.6% growth in revenue collection is one of the highest among states in the country,” Sarma said here. The finance minister attributed this growth to better management of financial resources and a crackdown on tax evasion. “We could achieve this growth because of our financial prudence even if we did not get one full year in the last fiscal,” he added, in a not-so-veiled jibe at the previous Congress government. “Our plan and nonplan expenditure has far excelled that during the Congress gover nment’s time. Our total expenditure was pegged at Rs 53,561.61 crore in 2016-17. In 2015-16, it was Rs 39,804.95 crore.

The expenditure figures indicated that there has been an increase of 34.56 % over 2015-16,” Sarma said. Of the total expenditure, he added, Rs 43,000 crore was digitally disbursed to different departments. “In 201516, the amount disbursed digitally was Rs 33, 357 crore. Increase in digital disbursement in our time has given a fillip to the expansion of digital transaction in the state,” he added. The finance minister was, however, sceptical if the high rate of revenue growth could be sustained once the Goods and Services Tax regime kicks in from July 1. “We all know GST will be implemented from this financial year. It is difficult to say right now what kind of tax collection, especially sales tax collection, can be expected after that. But I am optimistic we will maintain a collection rate of 19-20%. This confidence primarily stems from the fact that since our government came to power, we have been able to plug the all the leakages in tax collection. We are also confident of maintaining the momentum of expenditure we have gained right now,” Sarma said.

Dear Ajano... Hope you wake up today with cheerful heart, success in your path, answer to your prayer and the smile that will never be faded. (Its worth all the lost just to see your smile). Manipur CM seeks cooperation of civil servants Correspondent

IMPHAL, Apr 21: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh Friday stressed the important of a healthy cooperation between legislators and civil servants for giving good governance to the people. Addressing the 12th Civil Service Day, the chief minister said that “Periodic dialogue and interaction between the legislators and civil servants is a necessity for good governance.” Singh asserted that politicians come from social grassroots and know the sentiments of the people whereas civil servants know how to execute the government policies. “So

co-operation between the two is very much needed to bring good governance, he added. For smooth functioning of government and to fulfill the commitment of his government towards giving good governance, interaction programme between the ministers and civil servants would be held every month, he said while adding that it would also help in transparency and accountability. His gover nment would have zero tolerance on any act which is beyond the framework of the Indian Constitution and the government will not allow letting down the expectations of the

the activists. “Due to dilutions of the provisions of sixth schedule, all government funds for development, government job, land, trade and commerce reserved by the sixth schedule under paragraph-20 have been snatch away by the illegal Bongo Sena and foreigners. As a result, the tribal people in the rural areas are reduced to abject poverty and they have no clothes to wear and most of them are naked and semi-naked,” said another protester. “According to para 2 and sub para 6 of the Sixth Schedule, the rules for conduct of the first Council elections in 1951-52 were framed for temporary use. Under para 2 and sub para 7, the first Council should have made an Act and rules for conduct of elections but it has not been done till today. Why the delay in framing the rules? The 1951 rules, framed by the then governor without passing any Act, are obsolete. As the rules were framed hurriedly, there were many mistakes, ambiguities and contradictions in the Sixth Schedule itself,” Jones Ingti Kathar, who is a retired

13 killed, 20 injured as truck ploughs into crowd in Andhra

People near the truck that lost control and led to the tragedy that killed 20 people in Andhra Pradesh on Friday. Hyderabad, APR 21 (AGENCIES): At least 13 people were killed and about 20 injured on Friday when a truck driver lost control and hit an electric pole before ploughing the vehicle into a group of protesters, cars and shops at Yerpedu, about 25 km away from Tirupati in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. While six persons were crushed to death under the truck’s wheels, others died of electrocution and the re-

sultant fire, triggered by the mishap. Initially, about 20 people were feared dead. The incident happened at around 1:45pm, when a large number of people had gathered in front of the Yerpedu police station located on the PutalapattuNayudupeta state highway to stage a dharna to demand action against illegal sand mining in the area. Police said the truck with heavy load which was travelling at a high speed,

lost control and hit an electric pole before crushing several people under its wheels. The truck came to a halt after destroying several vehicles and roadside shops, which were gutted in a fire that broke out in one of the shops due to impact of the accident. A local reporter of a regional newspaper who was at the police station lost his legs in the accident. The driver and the cleaner absconded after the accident.

Renigunta deputy superintendent of police K S Nanjndappa said six people were crushed under the wheels of the truck, while the remaining 14 died of electric shock with high tension wires falling on them and fire in the shops. Following the accident, traffic movement on the Yerpedu, Srikalahasti, Renigunta and Tirupati routes was affected. Some of the injured were shifted to Ruia hospital in Tirupati, while few others were moved to hospitals in Chennai and Vellore. The condition of 10 of the injured is said to be critical. The Andhra Pradesh government announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased. Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock and grief at the loss of lives in the accident in Yerpedu. He directed the district Collector to personally supervise the relief operations. Meanwhile, tense situation is prevailing near Ruia hospital as relatives of the victims are thronging the hospital and demanding action against the driver.

Yogi orders review of Yash Bharti Awards Two IS men sentenced LU C K N OW, A P R 2 1 (AGENCIES): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered a thorough review of the prestigious Yash Bharti Awards started by Mulayam Singh Yadav in 1994, saying that giving them away to undeserving persons lowers the prestige of such an honour. The Chief Minister during a presentation of the Culture Department late Thursday night directed officials to thoroughly review the criteria and norms for these awards. Necessary action would be taken after the review, an official spokesperson quoted the CM as saying. Adityanath has been reviewing the schemes of the previous Akhilesh Yadav government including the Samajwadi Pension Yojana, Gomti river front project, Smartphone Yojana and cycle track project. The Chief Minister during the presentation noted that while giving away an award, its prestige should also be kept in mind as honouring undeserving persons lowers the dignity of the award. Mulayam, who was then the chief minister, had instituted the

Yogi Adityanath Yash Bharti Award, which is the highest award of the Uttar Pradesh government. It is given to personalities for making notable contribution to the fields of literature, social work, medicine, film, science, journalism, handicrafts, culture, education, music, drama, sports, industry and astrology. Besides a commendation letter, shawl and Rs 11 lakh, it carries a pension Rs 50,000 per month on demand. After it was discontinued by the Mayawati government, the Akhilesh Yadav government restarted it in 2015 but there were allegations that the prize money of Rs 11 lakh and Rs 50,000 monthly pension was being handed out arbitrarily. Notable recipients of the Yash Bharti awards are Harivansh Rai Bachchan,

Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Naseeruddin Shah and Nawazuddin Siddiqui among others. During the presentation last night, Adityanath also stressed on the review of the Maitreya project in Kushinagar district as farmers whose land has been acquired for it have lodged a protest. The Maitreya project envisages erecting statues of Maitreya Buddha and as per initial plans, a 152-metre (500 ft) statue was to be built in either Kushinagar or Bodh Gaya. These plans have since changed and the Maitreya Project now intends to construct relatively modest statues in both towns. The project was initiated by the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition, an organisation within the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism. Adityanath also directed officials to explore the possibility of starting branches of Lucknow-based Bhatkhande Music Institute in other districts and linking the pension scheme for old and poor artistes to the central scheme to increase its amount, the spokesperson added.

to seven years in jail

New Delhi, Apr 21 (IANS): A court here on Friday awarded seven-year jail term to two members of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group after their application for pleading guilty to charges against them was allowed. Those convicted by District and Sessions Judge Amar Nath are Sheikh Azhar-ul-Islam alias Abdul Sattar Sheikh and Mohammed Farhan Shaikh alias Mohammed Rafiq Shaikh. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had arrested Sheikh Azhar, Mohammed Farhan and one Adnan Hassan alias Mohammad Hussain in January last year on charges of involvement in a conspiracy to identify, motivate, radicalise, recruit and train potential members for the international militant group. While the first two have pleaded guilty, Adnan Hassan is currently in judicial custody and facing trial. “They were members of terrorist organisation and got themselves associated with their activities. That may be their folly either on account of misguidance or lack of maturity of mind

and circumstances,” Judge Amar Nath said. “This court needs to take into account positive aspect from their act of pleading guilty.” The court felt that the convicts had realised their mistakes and were willing to repent for their acts and deeds. “In this case, the convicts should get an opportunity to reform themselves and be good citizens of this country,” the judge observed. “Keeping in view the facts and circumstances, I am of considered opinion that there is a necessity to show some leniency while imposing punishment on the convicts, but at the same time, a wrong message should not go to the society,” the court said while awarding them the jail term. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 12,000 on each of them. The NIA submitted before the court that the accused had shown their repentance for their acts and requested the court to consider that the accused’s action was a move towards re-connecting with society.

K Chandrasekhar Rao re-elected as TRS president

HYDERABAD, APR 21 (AGENCIES): Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao was today re-elected as the president of Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), the party he formed in 2001. Telangana’s home minister and election officer Nayani Narasimha Reddy announced that Rao was unanimously elected as the party president, ahead of the party’s 16th plenary which began here today. The party leaders and workers, who were present at the press conference held by Reddy at Telangana Bhavan (TRS headquarters here), raised slogans and distributed sweets as Rao’s election was announced. Rao, who was deputy speaker of the then undivided Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly when N Chandrababu Naidu was Chief Minister, quit the TDP and formed the TRS in Hyderabad in 2001 to fight for a separate Telangana state. Riding on a wave of support in the 2014 Assembly elections, Rao became the first Chief Minister of Telangana on June 2, 2014, the day the state came into existence. As per the election schedule, the process of filing the nominations for the party president’s

Youth detained for post against Andhra CM Hyderabad, Apr 21 (IANS); A youth was detained on Friday over a derogatory post on social media against Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, police said. A police team from Guntur district took Ravi Kiran into its custody from his house in Shamshabad on the outskirts of Hyderabad. Kiran allegedly made derogatory comments about Naidu, his son IT Minister N. Lokesh and the state legislative council and also posted their caricatures and photoshoped pictures on Facebook. Police said a decision on whether to arrest Kiran or not will be taken after questioning. A member of the legislative council had complained to council chairman Chakrapani about the posts. The police were then alerted. Ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) suspect the involvement of some YSR Congress leaders in what it calls a campaign on social media to defame its leaders.

K Chandrasekhar Rao post began on April 14 and continued till April 18. The nominations were scrutinised on April 19 and yesterday was the day for withdrawl, he said. The state Cabinet ministers, MPs, MLAs, MLCs, zilla parishad chairpersons, chairmen of state-run corporations, heads of agriculture marketing committees and presidents of district party units submitted separate sets of nominations for the post of party president, Reddy said. “Total 12 sets of nominations were received. There was only one name, of KCR, in all the 12 sets. Our leader KCR’s name was proposed unanimously. All filed nominations seeking leadership of KCR,” he said. The TRS is holding its plenary today and would organise a massive public meeting on April 27 in Warangal.

Google set machine to learn Indian languages New Delhi, Apr 21 (IANS): Aiming to bring a billion people online and make the web more useful for them, Google India is slated to unveil new products on advancement in machine learning for the Indian languages, the company said on Friday. In an event to be organised here on April 25, Google will also share findings from a new report by Google and KPMG India, titled “Indian LanguagesDefining India’s Internet”. Rajan Anandan, Vice President, SouthEast Asia and India, Google, will address the event, the company said in a statement. In a bid to help Bengali speakers discover new information quickly, Google earlier this year announced the introduction of Knowledge Graph in the Bengali language on Google Search. The Knowledge Graph enables users to search for things, people or places that Google knows about -- landmarks, celebrities, cities, sports teams, buildings, geographical features, movies, celestial objects, works of art and more. Google has also introduced its neural machine translation support for more languages including Hindi to make the translation process seamless and refined.

SC to hear plea alleging torture, killings by BSF personnel New Delhi, APR 21 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court today agreed to hear in detail a plea seeking probe into alleged torture, rape and extrajudicial killings by the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel in the border areas of West Bengal. The plea has also challenged the constitutional validity of Section 46 of the BSF Act, which provides the situations in which a BSF personnel can be tried by a Security Force Court, and Section 47 which deals with the condition when a security personnel can be prosecuted by an ordinary criminal court. Initially, the bench was not inclined to hear the plea filed by Banglar Manabadhikar Suraksha Mancha, a Kolkata-based NGO, saying there were provisions in the BSF Act which provided the circumstances in which an ordinary regular court can try a BSF personnel for criminal offences. “If an encounter is genuine, then there is nothing to worry as section 46 (of the BSF Act) will

come in play. And if it is not a genuine encounter, then the personnel is not considered to be on active duty and can be tried by the ordinary court as described under section 47,” a bench of Chief Justice J.S. Khehar and Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and S.K. Kaul said. Bijan Ghosh, appearing for the NGO, said the trial of an errant BSF personnel before the Security Force Court is opaque and hardly leads to conviction and claimed that the two provisions of the Act are unconstitutional. The apex court in 2012 had issued notice to the Centre on the plea alleging torture, rape and extra-judicial killings by the BSF personnel in the border areas. The court was hearing the plea of the NGO which alleged that there were more than 200 cases where the Border Security Force personnel had indulged in extra-judicial killings or torture in these areas and the cases were never probed by the state police.

Lopsided planning

here had been many policy announcements for achieving economic development during the past decades and the consequent failures could be apportioned on the driving forces that help create the condition. Amid the cacophony of pronouncements and claims that are replete in the glossy booklets; the deceleration of economic development owing to social, economic and political factors are challenging the development ideology. The growing number among the present generation in Nagaland is certain that decades of bureaucratic experiment have gone on tangent with the avowed long term objectives. Socio-political ideologies have been encouraged in Nagaland but the air of freedom needed for any economic development took a beating since the mid-90s. The over saturation of politics has pushed important and pressing issues to the background. Some of the ideologies are at worst almost make-believe and at best bizarre, as they seek to reinvent or rewrite an aberration that is being passed off as vision. Planners tinkering with socio-economic through populist rhetoric need to realise that the cost on the overall concept has been damaging and as a consequence, the concept of economic development has become restricted to a few physical constructions. Among the pressing problems of a small state, which boasts of a high literacy ratio and rapid “growth in education” is high unemployment (officially at around 70,000 but unofficially not less than twice the figure) and dwindling opportunities in all spheres. The short term objectives fashioned for mileage has turned out to be mere symptomatic treatment. The powerful( politicians and bureaucrats) seem to exert a kind of wholesale right to grab whatever –be it jobs or contracts of opportunities- and leaving the powerless and needy with the vast dream in empty space. There can be no long term gain (meaning true people-oriented growth as opposed to individual or family oriented growth) unless the young people allowed to grow to their full potential and given whatever opportunities and space. Enlightenment among society’s reputed and influential organisations remains a crying need. If apex tribe organisations, church and NGOs etc focus on ensuring equal opportunities for all, it is very likely that there could be a serious problem even to the extent of widespread agitations. All the above need to go to basics to create a conducive atmosphere for planting the seeds of long term economic development in Nagaland without which no progress can be achieved. The drift towards too much politics has to be corrected. Money, power and politics and the role of the government machinery play too much role. Economics at both micro and macro levels are contexts seen in societies that have latched on the current of economic momentum. The plea of promoting economic development must not lead to creating of a privileged section. In this, the values that come from moral and ethics have been systematically scuttled. There can be no balance if a few have all and all have none. The crisis provides a challenge for the institutions that claim to be doing it “for the people” but end up doing only for “their people”. Unfortunately, hardly anyone is bothered about where everybody is heading to more than what they seek to grab or achieve.

DailyDevotion Don’t Hurt the Lord Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? —John 14:9 Our Lord must be repeatedly astounded at us— astounded at how “un-simple” we are. It is our own opinions that make us dense and slow to understand, but when we are simple we are never dense; we have discernment all the time. Philip expected the future revelation of a tremendous mystery, but not in Jesus, the Person he thought he already knew. The mystery of God is not in what is going to be— it is now, though we look for it to be revealed in the future in some overwhelming, momentous event. We have no reluctance to obey Jesus, but it is highly probable that we are hurting Him by what we ask— “Lord, show us the Father…” (John 14:8). His response immediately comes back to us as He says, “Can’t you see Him? He is always right here or He is nowhere to be found.” We look for God to exhibit Himself to His children, but God only exhibits Himself in His children. And while others see the evidence, the child of God does not. We want to be fully aware of what God is doing in us, but we cannot have complete awareness and expect to remain reasonable or balanced in our expectations of Him. If all we are asking God to give us is experiences, and the awareness of those experiences is blocking our way, we hurt the Lord. The very questions we ask hurt Jesus, because they are not the questions of a child. “Let not your heart be troubled…” (14:1, 27). Am I then hurting Jesus by allowing my heart to be troubled? If I believe in Jesus and His attributes, am I living up to my belief? Am I allowing anything to disturb my heart, or am I allowing any questions to come in which are unsound or unbalanced? I have to get to the point of the absolute and unquestionable relationship that takes everything exactly as it comes from Him. God never guides us at some time in the future, but always here and now. Realize that the Lord is here now, and the freedom you receive is immediate.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur Saturday, April 22, 2017

Post-mortem

Subhas Bose and the Clarification on battle of Kohima, 1944 Dr. Somingnam’s rejoinder S I beg to clarify a few misinformation that have again been fed to the Naga public by Dr. Somingam Mawon in his rejoinder to Thepfulhouvi Solo’s earlier write up. The misinformation are the following: 1. Though you (Dr. Somingnam) had claimed that you have read more than a 100 books and articles on Naga politics, you have not come across any mention of “NNC territory” in your readings. My suspicion is that you must have missed reading the Naga Yehzabo which is the most important document in Naga politics. A Yehzabo (Constitution) of a country is after all, the “Political Bible” of a nation where all the political truths of the nation are written. Now, you have written that (quote) “there is no such thing called NNC territory in the Naga vocabulary” (Morung Express April 20, 2017). Far from your assertion being true, the very first Article in the Naga Yehzabo states Naga territories in the following words: “The territory of Nagaland shall comprise of all the territories inhabited by all the Naga tribes from time immemorial” These words were stated in the first Yehzabo adopted on March 22, 1956 under the heading: THE FEDERATION AND ITS TERRITORY (Naga Yehzabo Part 1, Article 1) The NNC founders of our nation were not so stupid as to declare a Sovereign Democratic Republic without a clearly defined territory as its geographical area. Also, this territorial statement covers all Naga inhabited territories on the face of the earth which were dissected and divided by Britain, India and Burma. Nagas of course do not recognize these foreigner’s artificial boundaries which had been drawn without our information or consent. Nagas also of course, stand on the political truth, that no country can ever enter another country and draw boundary lines over lands that their own ancestors have never inhabited in their own respective histories. 2. As for the so called Indian puppet state of Nagaland which was created by the Naga People’s Convention (NPC) and the Indian Intelligence Bureau along with the Indian Home Ministry, suffice it to say that it is a State hanging in thin air with one leg in Nagaland, the second leg in Assam, the third in Arunachal Pradesh and the fourth in Manipur! The 19 NPC members and the Indian Government officials were in too great a hurry

2

to sabotage Phizo’s meeting with the world Press on 26th July 1960 that the NPC hurriedly submitted the 16 Points Agreement on the same day (July 26, 1960) and after getting Nehru’s approval for an Indian Nagaland State, left the issue of Naga territories to be decided on another date. Fifty seven years have already elapsed since that day, but that promise of an integrated Nagaland under one administrative umbrella still remains a chimera and a laughing matter for our immediate neighbors. 3. You had also mentioned that (quote) “Before the birth of the NSCN, there was this infamous Shillong Accord signed by the NNC” (unquote). You went on to cite section 2(i) of the accord “between the Government of India and the NNC ” and then went on to elaborate that this action had made the NNC to accept the Constitution of India and buried the long cherished Naga sovereignty. Many of us from the NNC and FGN had again and again clarified that the NNC had not signed the Shillong Accord and also that none of the signatories were members of the NNC. To make it very clear, I had even mentioned the names of the signatories and their portfolios in the FGN to prove that none of them were holding any position in the NNC (See Nagaland Post, April 2, 2017). But all these repeated clarifications have only met with counter allegations again and again that the NNC had signed the Shillong Accord. I therefore challenge you or any other members of the NSCN IM (including Th.Muivah) to state the portfolios of the NNC signatories of the Shillong Accord. At least a person like Th. Muivah will definitely be knowing the portfolios of these NNC signatories because he was the General Secretary of the NNC at that time. The Naga public needs to know the truth because they cannot just be fooled by repeated lies mentioned again and again through the impersonal name of the MIP NSCN IM. As for the facts of Naga history during the signing of the Shillong Accord, even the Vice President of the NNC-Imkongmeren , was in jail and the last un-captured remnant of the NNC members were hiding in the jungles of Nagaland with no food or communications whatsoever. Tell us then, how these last remnants of the NNC were able to gather together, draft the Shillong Accord and went to Shillong to betray the nation as purported by the NSCN IM. 4. Lastly, W. Shapwon has

already clearly shown in his book “The Illegal Formation of the NSCN” that both the Nagas in the Western sector of Nagaland (Indian side), as well as the Western sector of Nagaland (Burmese side), had unanimously rejected the Shillong Accord of 1975. Shopwan had pointed out that these rejection statements were done through President Zashei Huire’s three paged post Shillong Accord statement dated Dec. 30, 1975 and Muivah’s and Isak’s statement dated 15th August 1976 from Süpao in eastern Nagaland. (The Süpao statement was appended with other 48 NNC/FGN signatories in the Eastern sector as recorded in Shopwan’s book). The recorded facts therefore clearly show that both Easter n Nagaland and Western Nagaland had rejected the Shillong Accord out rightly between Dec 30, 1975 and August 15, 1976. But you are still alleging that some cadres of the Naga army who supported the Shillong Accord, in collaboration with “the Indian Security Forces” staged a coup d’état in Eastern Nagaland to oppose Isak and Muivah and that this action led to the fratricidal killings among Nagas. Can you mention which particular Indian Battalion or Brigade collaborated with this so called Naga army Shillong Accord group to overthrow Muivah and Isak’s in their attempt to safe the nation from doom? R.h.Raising had earlier alleged that even the Burmese army too was involved in this Coup d’état! As for your “Agony Day” which you have mentioned and which occurred in Langnok on Sept. 27, 1980, I mourn for all the victims who died in that tragic “Counter Revenge Action.” I know that they became victims of the massacre because your leaders had already killed too many of our innocent Eastern Naga brothers who had nothing to do with the Shillong Accord but remained faithful to Phizo and the NNC. I will stop there because to mention their names and how their villages were burnt and how they died in their thousands would only revive bitter hatred and animosity among our own Naga family again. If someone however really wants to know the names and dates and villages that were burnt by the NSCN cadres, refer again to W. Shapwon’s 108 paged book “Nagaland and Th. Muivah’s Terrorist Activities.” The book is full of dead Naga names and the dates and villages where they were murdered. Kaka D. Iralu

ome months ago during a consultative meeting of the apex body of my community I cautioned the audience that in the present society unfounded arguments are presented even by people considered to be highly educated, and in suited and booted. We need to be very careful. About two years ago, a local author published a book that made mention of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose having visited and camped at Kikrüma village during the Second World War. It alarmed the whole village as its history and its people only saw the Japanese, not the Indian National Army (INA) during the war. No sooner, the Village Council convened a meeting that was attended by all frontal organizations, senior citizens, and intellectuals. In the meeting those who lived through the Second World War shared what they saw. Two points were agreed upon unanimously. First, the Japanese forces were comprised of Japanese people only whereas the British forces mostly consisted out Mainland Indians, barring a couple of officers from British origins. Secondly, the Japanese soldiers could only speak their own language and communicated with the help of a few interpreters whereas those in the British forces mostly spoke Hindi. Therefore, the Village decided to convey its decision to the said Local author that in future edition of his book, the part that deals with Subhas Bose visits to Kikrüma be deleted. It is believed that some top Japanese army officers, including Lieutenant General Kotuku Sato, who led the 31st Japanese Division stayed at Kikrüma. The village, after all, is only 19 miles away from the southeast of Kohima, and therefore was a strategic location as far as the Kohima battle was concerned. Subhas Bose, the ‘Commander-inChief ’ of roughly ‘30,000 INA soldiers’ was not seen in Kikrüma, or for that matter in surrounding villages. However, as per the conventions of war, and him being the Commander-in-Chief, he was in any case unlikely to move around in an area very different from where his division was. If at all Subhas Bose had been to this area, Dzülha to Kikrüma, then it would have been swamped by INA soldiers. However, in ground zero it was nothing like that.

At Chazouba the Japanese fought against the Britishers, hence a place there called Japan Riba, which translates as the ‘Battle of Japan’; also there is a high school named after the place, Japan Riba Govt. High School, Chazouba; and from Cheswezu to Kikrüma it was reported and witnessed that only the Japanese fought the Allied forces Going by the oral histories and the testimonies of the living witnesses of the local, the presence of the INA was never seen or felt during the war. The main entry point of the Japanese forces into the area was the village of Jessami. History tells us that it was with great difficulty that the Japanese forces fought themselves a way through Jessami, which was defended by British-led forces. The issue of Subhas Bose having come to Nagaland emerged only after a photo (poster) of him in an INA uniform spread across Nagaland during the 1970s and 80s with his uniform being somewhat resembling the Japanese uniforms. From that moment, some impulsive individuals claimed that Subhas Bose had come to their village. But except for such rumors, there exists no record of Subhas Bose having come to this region. Besides those who fell during the battle of Kohima, many Japanese died and some were murdered during their retreat. However, in that case too, not a single case of an INA soldier was recorded or reported. Since history cannot be changed, distorted or simplified, it is expected that everyone, but especially the government, should not be carried away by baseless utterances of some uninformed individuals, like the person from my village who told the local author about his own make up story of Subhas Bose’ visit to Kikrüma. The government, while formulating policies towards documenting important historical events, should carry out proper studies through its competent agencies and only thereafter should recognition be given. One cannot go by the writings of amateur scholars whose work may lack scientific research methodology and adequate levels of objectivity. I am writing this not to malign any particular individual but to avoid confusion in the near, and not so near, future and to stop those who are misleading the historical consciousness of younger generations. Campaign for Dry Village

017, marks a red letter year in the history of roadside Arunachal village- Siji as Self Help Group of Siji finally launched intensified campaign to declare it as ‘dry village.’ Siji, one of the peaceful village of Arunachal Pradesh is witnessing abundance freely flow of liquor in recent times. Many wine-socked husband always feast eyes on bottle spends their hard earn from highway traffic duty and returned home empty pocket. As a result it directly affects the family economy. Now if one encountered financial crisis imagine what herculean struggle their coming generation will face for livelihood. While straightway kickoff the heroic crusade SHG president Kar pi said, ‘West Siang Superintend of Police gave assurance and helping us by sending police to do surprise visit in & around the village to barred open drinking and unauthorized selling of intoxicant drink. By responding application in brisk chill evening vigilance band deed a sudden check and in first attempt

itself usage of restricted item reduced. Their inspection was more like a bringing heaven on earth rather than just a checking. The Sub-Divisional Officer of Likabali also gave timely response to SHG by immediately issuing a notice to end illegal promotion of intoxicated drink. Everyone’s unique cooperation greeting to realize dr y province! Women of this rural community are thankful to those kind officers and their team who captured SHG hearts by enthusiastic exemplary role because this SHG is purely madeup of women folks. Actually, a picturesque landscape & breathtaking sights Siji and her adjacent villages namely Soi, Lago, Magi & Kane dwellers are 100% Christian. They are hub of one of the oldest church in the state especially among Galo. Despite repeated teaching from the church elders and the council without knowing waited for horrific consequences. People are randomly enjoying those harmful substances. In addition to the restriction from

spiritual leaders SHG are taking valuable assistance from gracious government agency to curb down drainage of wealth in useless consumption. Once a consumer discontinue this useless practice their money, energy & time will directly be invested in productive way that yield health & wealth. Then they will understand that no dream is too big and no dreamer is too small. For this reason SHG Secretary Pakchek ‘appealed to the anointed preachers and the responsible government official to do frequently surprise checks in the village till the seller and the drinker voluntarily cease trading and drinking. Their noble acts will give peaceful atmosphere in the vicinity and it can create bright career for the children. More than that villager will get respect, pride and unparallel experience of being part of ideal hamlet. That will be one of the best gifts presented to the society. One may rationalize that though Siji is regarded as Christ-Centered village by followers of the

Lord Jesus Christ. Poverty affected person sometimes could sell liquor to manage the kitchen. Question is can seller build a family by ruining other families? After raising certain amount through un-commendable trade, if they stop or tried to wash themselves as a good person yet the evil trade of past days would surely hurt them, so, better not to get involved in unwanted activities. Nobody changes without a strong commitment and remain committed in commitment. Whether embarking in new things or taking up fresh habit or bidding adieu to terrible routine. If everyone realise the value of this movement one day they will be the key person to say ‘no to wine. So wishing to gently remind the concern authorities instead of imposing heavy fine or putting the offender behind the bar it will be best teaching them the values of their own (seller) and life’s of other (purchasers). Due to unemployment issue some illiterate offender may be compelled

to take-up that commerce since no industries is in their vicinity. Hence, traders who engaged in it for immediate fiscal basic need can pray to God the Father YHWH to provide alternative source of income which is approved in the Bible. ‘We are not against anybody

simply craving to reside in the prosperous land besides longing to see every children live a life better than the best’ exclusively explained Daknya SHG treasurer. This mission will not only make future interesting but generate thrill paradise. Yumri Taipodia

At places, they take away pipe valves to disrupt water supply... in Sangam Vihar they threw cement bags into the sewers to choke them....” Kejriwal said power and water troubles are likely to continue till Sunday, the day when polling will be held for the three municipal corporations in Delhi. “If you face any such issue in your locality, tell us and we will resolve it. But be alert and understand that this is a mischief of BJP and Congress volunteers,”

Kejriwal said. On Tuesday, private power distribution company BSES alleged that oil was stolen from at least 70 of its transformers, causing power outage in different parts of the capital. set on fire for dowry

Ghaziabad, Apr 21 (IANS): A teacher, whose husband and in-laws allegedly set her on fire over demands for a dowry of Rs 25 lakh, succumbed to her injuries 8 days after the incident. On April 13, the victim Sangeeta was preparing dinner at her in-laws house in Vasundhara residential locality under Indirapuram police station of this city, when her husband Sanjeev Nagar, father-in-law Rich Pal Nagar and mother-in-

law Ram Bhuli Nagar tried to burn her by pouring diesel on her, attempting to make it look like a case of accidental fire. However, neighbours came to her rescue and soon her parents and brother took her to Safdarjung hospital in Delhi. After registering a case, the police initiated a probe in the case. The FIR stated that Sangeeta told her mother in the hospital that her husband had been demanding Rs 25 lakh since a month.

Bhutan and Nepal have also signed up for the event. The march has spread to African nations such as Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda, Europe, UK, Australia, South Korea and Japan among others. In Coimbatore, the organisation for science education, School of Science, is organising the satellite march around the city’s race course. “Being the only event (we have no updates on the march in Hyderabad as of now) in India, we technically stand with March for Science,” Arjhun Swaminathan of the organisation told IANS. “We are expecting over 200 people to march with us on the 22nd. We here at Coimbatore are marching to bring a new era in science education in the city,” said Swaminathan.

The order, issued yesterday, says while freedom of expression on social media is important, it also comes with a responsibility. Varanasi is the Lok Sabha constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The administration has directed that no statement or post which can hurt religious sentiments should be forwarded to any other group or person else legal action will be taken. It also directs that case under cyber crime law, Information Technology Act and IPC will be filed in case of violation of these guidelines. The order also makes it clear that orders of the Supreme Court and various high courts will be considered while initiating action. New Delhi, Apr 21 (IANS): Indian engineering major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Hanwha Techwin (HTW) of South Korea on Friday signed a contract to provide the Indian Army with a mobile artilley gun. After succesful completion of the trails for 155mm/52 caliber Tracked Self-Propelled (SP) Gun programme by the Army, L&T was declared the sole qualified bidder based on the performance of its K9 VAJRA-T. The gun is an enhanced version of HTW’s K9 Thunder with modifications for desert operations. Generally, artillery guns are towed by trucks but self-propelled guns are either mounted on a wheeled or tracked chasis, allowing them to move on their own. Jayant Patil, Head of Defence and Aerospace, L&T, said: “This contract marks an important milestone in L&T’s Defence Business journey and in our relationship with Hanwha Techwin. “L&T plans to begin production of this vital weapon system at its Strategic Systems Complex at Talegaon near Pune and deliver the first batch of 10 guns.

Hefty fines and stringent action against violation cannot be taken at present as the current Consumer Protection Law does not empower the ministry+ to do so, the official said. However, the new Consumer Protection Bill under which an authority will be set up will have powers to take action, the official added. Last week, Paswan had said that the ministry has prepared an advisory on the service charge issue and the same was sent to the PMO for approval.

teraction between the two countries under the Trump Administration -- Ross is believed to have said that US has started the process of reviewing H-1B visas issues and no decision has been taken on them yet, they said. Ross is understood to have said that whatever the outcome of the review process, the Trump administration’s objective is to have a merit-based immigration policy that gives preference to highly-skilled professionals. The executive order signed by Trump earlier this week calls for a review of H-1B visas by the departments of State, Labour, Homeland Security and Justice. The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to

Liezietsu maintained that the brave mission of the Naga Club members must be remembered appropriately for posterity and for which a memorial stone was erected in Kohima (on Friday). He said the Memorial Park will be built around the hilltop in due course to appropriately mark the 100th anniversary. Liezietsu also disclosed that he has penned a few words to acknowledge the role of NLC in the modern history forever. He said the words to be engraved in the Monolith is : “Forever grateful to the Naga Labour Corps for the foundation they laid for the everlasting friendship and unity of the Nagas”. Liezietsu said the NLC has created history for Naga present and for the better future and appealed never to forget them for generations to come.

Home Minister Y. Patton in his brief address said it was a day to honour and remember the Naga heroic brothers who 100 years back by their actions laid the foundation of the Naga Nationalism. He said the memorial stone being built on the hillock and the monolith was a way of paying gratitude to the brave and visionary men by the citizens of Nagaland. Patton also said the present and the coming generation owe much to the Naga Labour Corps whose sacrifices has recognized the Nagas in the comity of the nation. State chaplain Rev. Kuzierang Thoü invoked God’s blessings. Khedi Baptist Church, Police Brass Band and culture guard Mezoma presented special number and folk songs. Indian technology companies depend on it to hire tens of thousands of employees each year for their US operations. The US market accounts for about 60 per cent of the revenue of the Indian IT industry. Jaitley, leading an Indian delegation, arrived here yesterday to attend the annual Spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Over the next two days, the Finance Minister is scheduled to hold a series of bilateral meetings with his counterparts from the US, Australia, France, Indonesia and Sweden. He is also likely to meet finance ministers from neighbouring Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Stressing that India-US relationship has bipartisan support in both the countries, the Finance Minister during his meeting with the US commerce secretary, said the two largest democratic countries of the world over the years have developed strong strategic, economic and defence ties.

Washington, Apr 21 (PTI): Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has strongly raised with US Commerce Secretar y Wilbur Ross India’s concerns over the Trump administration’s move to tighten the H-1B visa regime, highlighting the key role played by Indian professionals in boosting the American economy. President Donald Trump this week signed an executive order for tightening the rules of the H-1B visa programme to stop its “abuse” and ensure that the visas are given to the “most-skilled or highest paid” petitioners. The Indian IT industry has expressed serious concerns over the US’ move to tighten the rules for grant of the H-1B visa, mainly used by domestic IT professionals for short-term work. Taking up the case of Indian IT companies and professionals, Jaitley told Ross about the contribution of highly-skilled Indians in the economic development of the US and India and stressed that they should continue to do so, which is in the best interest of the two countries, officials said. Police officer killed in Paris attack

Paris attack to have ‘big effect’ on poll: Trump

US President Donald Trump on Friday said a deadly attack in Paris claimed by the Islamic State group “will have a big effect” on France’s upcoming presidential vote. “Another terrorist attack in Paris. The people of France will not take much more of this. Will have a big effect on presidential election!” he said, breaking a silence over Sunday’s vote in a tweet. Trump tweeted hours after a gunman shot dead a policeman and wounded two others on the world-famous Champs Elysees boulevard. The attack rocked France’s presidential race Friday with just days to go before one of the closest races in recent memory. Bloodshed had long been feared ahead of Sunday’s first round of voting after a string of jihadist atrocities since 2015, and the shooting on the world-renowned boulevard forced security to the top of the agenda in the campaign. France is in a state of emergency and at its highest possible level of alert since

of chemical weapons. A senior Israeli military officer told Israeli reporters that “a few tonnes of chemical weapons” remained in the hands of Assad’s forces, a military official told Reuters. In a 2013 agreement brokered by Russia and the United States, Syria agreed to destroy its chemical weapons. The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical weapons, a global watchdog, said sarin or a similar banned toxin was used in the April 4 strike in Syria’s Idlib province.

N. Korea words provocative, but not to be trusted

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Friday North Korea’s recent statements were provocative but had proven to be hollow in the past and should not be trusted. “As far as North Korea’s latest words (are concerned), I think we’ve all come to hear their words repeatedly, their word has not proven honest,” Mattis told a news conference in Tel Aviv. On Thursday the official newspaper of North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party, Rodong Sinmun, threatened the United States with a “super-mighty preemptive strike” that it said would wipe out “not only the U.S. imperialists’ invasion forces in South Korea and its surrounding areas but the U.S. mainland and reduce them to ashes”.

BEIJING, APR 21 (PTI): President Xi Jinping has been unanimously elected as a delegate to the National Congress of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) at the Guizhou provincial party unit. 63-year-old Xi, regarded as the most powerful leader heading the party, military and the government, will complete his first five-year term during the 19th party Congress to be held later this year and start his second five-year term. In CPC system, leaders have a 10-year tenure. A total of 2,300 delegates to the National Congress, slated for the second half of 2017, are being elected by 40 electoral units across the country. The election will be completed by June. Xi was nominated by the CPC Central Committee as a candidate for delegate to the 19th CPC National Congress and put to vote in the Guizhou electoral unit. The announcement of Xi’s unanimous election yesterday won a burst of long and warm applause at the provincial congress, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. The unanimous vote of Xi by more than 730 provincial congress delegates represents the shared aspiration of more than 1.7 million CPC members in Guizhou and the wholehearted support of over 40 million residents, the delegates said. The CPC national congress, which typically convenes once every five years, is of great importance. It hears and deliberates reports of the Central Committee and the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.

In this April 19, 2017 photo, an anti-government protesters throws a molotov bomb at security forces in Caracas, Venezuela. (AP/PTI) C A R A C A S, A P R 2 1 (AGENCIES): Venezuela’s opposition renewed nationwide protests on Thursday to pressure President Nicolas Maduro to hold elections and improve a collapsing economy, and vowed to keep up pressure by staging three more protests in the next four days. Thursday’s crowds were smaller than the hundreds of thousands of people who flooded the streets of Caracas and provincial cities on Wednesday, the latest and largest in several weeks of protests against what Maduro’s opponents condemn as a lurch toward dictatorship. But still, thousands of people waving Venezuelan flags and shouting “No more dictatorship” took to the streets in the capital and across the oil-rich nation. The opposition’s leadership then called for further protests in communities across Venezuela on Friday, a white-clad “silent” march in Caracas on Saturday to commemorate the eight people killed during unrest this month, and a nation-

wide “sit-in” blocking Venezuela’s main roads on Monday. That sets the stage for prolonged disruption in volatile Venezuela, where security forces have been blocking rallies this month and protests have dissolved into clashes with rockthrowing youth. “Today the people of Venezuela showed they are committed to this cause,” said opposition lawmaker Freddy Guevara during a news conference late on Thursday, urging people to stay on the streets. Government officials dismiss the protests, characterized by street barricades and clashes with security forces, as violent and lawless efforts to overthrow Maduro’s leftist government with the backing of ideological adversaries in Washington. The opposition counters that Maduro, deeply unpopular as Venezuelans grapple with triple-digit inflation and shortages of food and basic consumer goods, is seeking to stay in power indefinitely by barring opposition leaders from

office and quashing independent state institutions. “Protests will need to grow and persist over the coming weeks to force a political transition,” Eurasia analyst Risa Grais-Targow said in a note on Thursday. “The opposition’s response to regional elections, which the National Electoral Council will probably call in the coming days, will be key to maintaining momentum in the streets.” The current wave of marches, the most sustained protests against Maduro since 2014, has sparked regular melees. There were also late-night barricades and some looting in Caracas’ middle-class neighborhood of El Paraiso on Wednesday night. Two students and a National Guard sergeant were killed in Wednesday’s demonstrations, bringing the death toll in demonstrations this month to eight. Rights group Penal Forum said more than 500 people were arrested in relation to Wednesday’s protest and 334 remained in detention.

Fresh evidence reiterates MH370’s likely location Park’s trial to begin in May CANBERRA, APR 21 (IANS): Fresh evidence confirms that the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 is most likely located to the north of the actual search zone, Australian scientists said on Friday. The evidence was featured in a report prepared for the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) scientists The new area is twice the size of greater Sydney, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation news reported.

This latest research confirms their earlier drift analysis made in a report released in November 2016. In their new report, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation team confirmed their new findings correspond to their previous predictions for the plane’s location. “The only thing that our recent work changes is our confidence in the accuracy of the estimated location, which is within the new search area identified ... near 35 degrees south,” the scientists said. It is a region known

as the Seventh Arc, which was searched incompletely during 2014-15 before efforts were redirected further south. A total of 239 people were on board the flight travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014, when it disappeared from aviation radars. The search for the Boeing 777 was suspended in January, reports the Australian Broadcasting Corporation news. Ministers from Malaysia, Australia and Chi-

na agreed that there needed to be “credible new evidence” if the operation was to continue. About 120,000 sq.km of the ocean bed have been searched to no avail, despite the more than $180 million cost of the operation. Since the CSIRO’s November report, the scientists conducted further detailed analysis based on the first tangible evidence of the crash - a part of the wing known as a flaperon - which washed up at La Reunion Island in 2015.

SEOUL, APR 21 (IANS): The preparatory session of the trial against South Korea’s ousted President Park Geun-hye, who is charged with corruption, will take place in May, only a week before the vote to elect her successor. Sources close to the Seoul Central District court, which will hear the case, told Yonhap News Agency on Friday that a preparatory hearing is scheduled on May 2, although Park, 65, is not required to attend. Park’s lawyers must summarise their position before the court on that day regarding the charges filed against her, including abuse of power, bribery, coercion and disclosure of state secrets. On April 17, the prosecution officially filed the charges against Park, who has been in custody since March 31.

Three of the four presidential frontrunners -- Le Pen, centrist Emmanuel Macron and conservative Francois Fillon -- called off campaign events planned for Friday in the wake of the attack. The vote is being closely watched as a pivotal event amid a global swing to the right, including Trump’s election in November and Britain’s decision to exit the European Union last summer, a move the US president has applauded. Macron, a 39-year-old moderate, is presenting himself as a guarantor of the EU, promising reform and appealing to pro-Europe sentiment among the French electorate. Le Pen, widely seen as taking the hardest line on security, has called for France to “immediately” take back control of its own borders from the European Union and deport all foreigners on a terror watchlist.

Syria retained chemical weapons, says Jim Mattis

T E L AV I V, A P R 2 1 (AGENCIES): Jim Mattis said on Friday that Syria had dispersed its warplanes in recent days and that it retained chemical weapons, an issue he said would have to be taken up diplomatically. The United States launched dozens of missiles earlier this month against a Syrian air base in response to a chemical attack that killed 90 people, including 30 children. It says the Syrian government launched the attack from the Shayrat air base. The Pentagon has said that the strike had damaged or destroyed about 20 percent of the Syrian military’s operational aircraft. During a press conference alongside his Israeli counterpart, Mattis was asked whether the Syrian military had moved warplanes to a Russian base in Latakia. “They have dispersed their aircraft, no doubt. They have dispersed their aircraft in recent days,” Mattis said. Mattis also reiterated that the United States believed Syria had retained some chemical weapons. “The bottom line is, I can say authoritatively they have retained some (chemical weapons). It’s a violation of the United Nations Security Council resolutions, and it’s going to have to be taken up diplomatically,” Mattis said. Israel’s military said on Wednesday it believes Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces still possess several tonnes

He said officers were “deliberately” targeted. Speaking in Washington during a news conference with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni, US President Donald Trump said the shooting “looks like another terrorist attack” and sent condolences to France. Emergency vehicles blocked the wide avenue lined with shops that cuts across central Paris between the Arc de Triomphe and the Tuileries Gardens, normally packed with cars and tourists. Subway stations were closed off.

‘The X-Files’ confirmed to return for new series

F

ox have confirmed that ‘The X-Files’ will be returning for a new series later this year. Last year, it was revealed that David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson were in ‘significant talks‘ for another season, after the success of the cult sci-fi show’s six season renewal last year – ending a 14 year hiatus. Now, it has been revealed that production on 10 new episodes for season 11 will begin later this summer, to be televised between 2017-2018.

“Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators – these are the hallmarks of great TV shows. And they are some of the reasons why The X-Files has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide,” said Fox president David Madden. “Chris’ creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can’t wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of The X-Files.”

Earlier this month, it emerged that Duchovny and Anderson had reunited for a special ‘X-Files’ audio series. Titled The X-Files: Cold Cases, the audio drama is based on a series of X-Files comic books by graphic novelist Joe Harris. Fellow cast members William B. Davis (Cigarette Smoking Man), Mitch Pileggi (Walter Skinner), and Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, and Bruce Harwood (The Lone Gunmen) have all contributed too. It will be released on July 18.

The track, ‘Attention’, is the first new music from the former YouTube star since last year’s debut album, ‘Nine Track Mind’, which featured collaborations with Meghan Trainor on ‘Marvin Gaye’ and Selena Gomez on ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’. Puth is yet to announce the title of release date of his second album. Last year, the singer apologised, then later deleted that apology, after appearing to diss Justin Bieber onstage at one of his gigs. Puth made reference to Bieber during his show in Dallas, Texas, during a performance of ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’, the studio recording of which features Bieber’s exgirlfriend Gomez, Puth said: “F*** you, Justin Bieber”.

ctress Raveena Tandon said that when it comes to religion, the Hindi film industry is the most secular one as compared to others. Raveena, who was in the capital on Thursday to promote her new film ‘Maatr’, was asked about singer Sonu Nigam’s comments demanding a ban on loudspeakers during azaan.

After his comments, Sonu shaved his head and apologised earlier this week. “If we look at the current scenario of our country - whether you look at people of any religion - fanaticism is wrong. We have always lived as a secular and strong country and we should be allowed to do so,” Raveena said.

o o k s l i k e Ja d e n Smith is going to be the latest artist to jump into K-Pop. The hugely popular style, which originated in South Korea in the early-90s, is typified by its use of electronic instruments and audio-visual elements in videos and performances. The man credited with getting the scene started is South Korean pop impresario Lee Soo-man. Rather than hosting talent shows like Western counterpart Simon Cowell, Lee’s system relies on recruiting very young singers and dancers who are then put through years of rigorous training before being forged into groups. His first major successes were late Nineties boy group H.O.T. and girl group S.E.S., who are credited with sparking the ‘Idol craze’ for manufactured

said, referring to his father Will Smith. Jaden then revealed that he was looking to move away from Los Angeles, claiming that “there’s a lot of bad things here.” “Create the life that you want for yourself. Everybody follow your heart, you know what I’m saying? Do exactly what you want to do, be who you want to be. Don’t try to be somebody else. It’s hard these days to really create the life you want for yourself because there’s nobody really here that’s like supporting the youth or the youth’s creativity.” Smith is currently filming Life In A Year with Cara Delevingne.

22ND APRIL 1977-2017 Dear Mom & Dad, On this special day, we want to let you know how truly blessed we are to have you in our lives. The Sümi Baptist Church Zunheboto is exceedingly grateful to Shri Kumou Stephen, Deputy Central Intelligence Officer SIB Zbto, who voluntarily agreed in advance to provide home grown flowers as and when the New Church Building of the SBCZ is dedicated. He also went out of his way to accompany the Church officials to Mao Gate and back making sure that the consignment was safely delivered. If Shri Kumou was the mobiliser, the Mao Flower Growers Association was the provider. Each individual cheerfully gave away the home grown flowers, not out of compulsion but out of knowing that there is more joy in giving than in receiving. Such generosity and thoughtfulness has truly humbled the entire church community. As a gesture thus, the SBCZ through this medium expresses profound gratitude to all concerned for the unparalleled selfless act. May you continue to be the source of blessing to others. SBCZ DP-3710

Cavs erase deficit to beat Pacers

LeBron James scored a stunning 41 points as Cleveland Cavaliers won in Indiana.

Ind i a na , A p r 2 1 (Agencies): LeBron James finished with 41 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists, and the Cleveland Cavaliers set an NBA postseason record by erasing a 25-point halftime deficit to beat the Indiana Pacers 119-114 on Thursday night and take a 3-0 lead in the Eastern Conference firstround series.

James passed Kobe Bryant for No. 3 on the NBA’s career playoff scoring list and tied another NBA record by winning his 20th consecutive firstround game. The Cavaliers will try to sweep the series Sunday. The incredible rally ruined Paul George’s big night. He had 36 points, a

playoff career-high 15 rebounds and nine assists. Cleveland trailed by 26 in the first half and was still down 74-49 at halftime. The largest halftime deficit overcome to win a playoff game had been 21 points by Baltimore against Philadelphia in 1948. James scored 13 points in the third quarter to get the Cavs within 91-84. James now has 5,669 points, 29 ahead of Bryant. He also matched three other ex-Los Angeles Lakers — Magic Johnson, Michael Cooper and James Worthy — for most consecutive first-round wins. This comeback began with a second straight devastating third-quarter punch from the Cavs. After Cleveland cut the deficit to 77-62 and then watched Indiana extend the margin to 20, Cleveland finished the quarter on a 17-4 spurt to make it 91-84. Things only got worse for the Pacers. George’s 3 with 5:15 to go gave Indiana a 104103 lead — its last of the game. James answered with a layup out of a timeout and the Cavs never trailed again. It’s only the second time in the Pacers’ NBA history they have lost the

Arrest made over attack on German football team

Berlin, Apr 21 (IANS): German prosecutors on Friday arrested a 28-yearold German-Russian citizen on suspicion of carrying out the bomb attack on a bus carrying the Borussia Dortmund football team. The suspect, arrested near the city of Tuebingen, was staying at the Dortmund team hotel on April 11, the day of the attack, CNN quoted the prosecutor’s office as saying. Three explosive devices shattered windows and injured Spanish defender Marc Bartra, 26, on the bus as the German squad was en route to its home Champions League match against AS Monaco. The game was postponed to the next day. The devices, which were hidden behind a hedge, contained pieces of metal and had a reach of 100 metres, the federal prosecutor’s office said. The prosecutor’s office said the suspect had bought a considerable number of team stock in the hope of making a substantial profit if their value fell, reports CNN. According to the prosecutor’s office, 15,000 shares of Dortmund stock were purchased using the IP address of team hotel the day of the attack.

Hingis looks to end 20-yr Fed Cup wait PARIS, Apr 21 (Agencies): Martina Hingis looks to reach a first Fed Cup final in almost two decades when Switzerland face Belarus with the former world number one revelling in her role as the team’s “big sister”. Hingis, 36 and a fivetime Grand Slam singles champion, was just 17 when she and Switzerland were defeated 3-2 by Spain in the 1998 final. Hingis won both her singles rubbers in that tie but lost the key doubles alongside Patty Schnyder. Since then, she has retired and made two comebacks, carving out a successful career as a doubles specialist, even managing to claim a silver medal alongside compatriot Timea Bacsinszky at the Rio Olympics last year. Hingis will play just doubles in Minsk on Sunday although that could prove a decisive mission against a Belarus squad who are making their semi-final debut. “In the Fed Cup, I am like the big sister now,” admitted Hingis. “My role is different these days but we are a strong team with a great spirit.” The Swiss, playing in back-to-back Fed Cup semifinals, will start favourites. Bacsinszky is the tie’s top singles player, ranked at 22

in the world, with Viktorjia Golubic at 54. Injury-plagued Belinda Bencic is now down at 129 but was as high as seven in February last year. By contrast, Belarus’s top player is Aliaksandra

Sasnovich, ranked 96 with Aryna Sabalenka at 125 and Olga Govortsova, contesting her 31st Fed Cup tie, down at 147. The hosts, however, are on an eight-match winning streak in the Fed Cup.

Former Eng international Ugo dies L o nd o n, A p r 2 1 (Agencies): Former England international Ugo Ehiogu has died at the age of 44 after collapsing at Tottenham’s training ground. Ehiogu had been working as an U23 coach at Spurs and was rushed to hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest on Thursday. A statement from Spurs, released on Friday, announced Ehiogu passed away “in the early hours of this morning”. The statement read, “It is with

immense sadness we announce the passing of Ugo Ehiogu. Ugo received immediate treatment after suffering a cardiac arrest at the training centre yesterday before being transferred to hospital, where he passed away in the early hours of this morning.” Spurs’ head of coaching and player development John McDermott said: “Words cannot express the shock and sadness that we all feel at the club. “Ugo’s immense presence will be irreplaceable. J o h a nn e s b u r g , Apr 21 (Agencies): South Africa One-Day International (ODI) skipper AB de Villiers and veteran batsman Hashim Amla are among the eight marquee South Africa players, who will be representing the various franchises in the first two editions of the new T20 Global Destination League which gets underway later this year. This follows the last week’s announcement of the eight marquee foreign international players. Each marquee Proteas player will be allocated to a new franchise team based in the city he has either been historically associated with or a city with which he can build a strong association. The other marquee Proteas players who have agreed playing league con-

tracts with Cricket South Africa (CSA) are: Quinton de Kock, JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, David Miller, Kagiso Rabada, Imran Tahir. “The selection of our own South African marquee players has been very exciting,” commented CSA Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat. And it will be even more exciting when we engage fans to help us to allocate the “hometown hero” to each franchise team. As announced last week, each franchise team will also be allocated an international marquee player. This means that each team will start with two marquee players named in their 17-man squad. The rest of the squad will be assembled by the team owners and coach in a player draft system.

Man Utd through to Europa semis

Anderlecht threw bodies forward in the last few minutes and could have won the tie but Romero saved a header from close range. The final moments were nervy as Utd showed very little composure but they held on for a deserved victory and their quest to lift the only European or domestic trophy they have never won, continues to the last four.

United draw Celta Vigo as Ajax face Lyon

Marcus Rashford scored the winning goal as Manchester United beat Anderlecht 2-1 after extra-time in the Europa League.

L o n d o n, A p r 2 1 (Agencies): An extratime strike from Marcus Rashford sent Manchester United into the Europa League semi-finals after they struggled to kill off a stubborn Anderlecht. Having conceded a late equaliser in the first leg in Belgium last week, Jose Mourinho’s side took control of the tie early on when Henrik Mkhitaryan finished off a lovely move involving Rashford and a sumptuous throughball from Paul Pogba. Despite Utd being in command from the off, Anderlecht grew into the match and it was no surprise when Sofiane Hanni fired home from close range after Utd failed to clear their lines.

The hosts’ defence by that stage had begun to look shaky, the in-form Marcos Rojo forced off with a knee problem and his replacement Daley Blind showing signs of rustiness. The second half of the game saw Mourinho bring on Marouane Fellaini for the disappointing Jessse Lingard with, unsurprisingly, a switch to a more direct style of play. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who had a stinker, missed two great opportunities to restore the home side’s lead while Rashford failed to finish having been sent clear, rounding the keeper but a heavy touch caused the chance to be wasted. Ibrahimovic injured himself when landing awkwardly right on the stroke

of half-time with Anthony Martial introduced for the Swede, Ander Herrera and Wayne Rooney remaining on the bench for the full 120 minutes. Pogba had a goal disallowed correctly in the first period of extra time for a foul by Fellaini as the game became very stretched. Utd continued to have the better of the chances and the bulk of the play but the Belgians remained a real threat on the counter. Just after the restart for the second period of extra time, the outstanding Rashford got his just reward for a performance of movement, drive and intelligent link-up play, taking two lovely touches in the box before rifling home from 12 yards.

‘Sharapova should not get French Open wildcard’ Paris, Apr 21 (Agencies): Maria Sharapova should not be given a wildcard entry into next month’s French Open, according to Agnieszka Radwanska. Sharapova returns to the WTA Tour as a wildcard in Stuttgart next week after serving a 15-month ban for a doping offence. Current world No 1 Angelique Kerber called the Stuttgart organisers’ decision “a little strange”, while men’s No 1 Andy Murray has also made known his feelings on the issue. And now Radwanska has called for Sharapova, a two-time French Open winner, to start from scratch rather than walk straight into the Roland Garros draw. A decision on wildcards is expected on May 15, and eighth-ranked Radwanska said, “Maria should rebuild her career in a different way, beginning with smaller events.” “This kind of entry into the tournament should be available only for players who were dropped in the ranking due to injury, illness or other random accident. Not for those suspended for doping. She wouldn’t have a chance for [a wildcard] from my hands.” “So far she hasn’t been invited to play at slams in Paris and London and in my opinion that’s how it should remain. She should win her place thanks to good results.” This year’s French Open starts on May 28 without Serena Williams, who this week announced she is pregnant.

Injured Rahul set to miss Champions Trophy

KL Rahul

New Delhi, Apr 21 (Agencies): India opener KL Rahul, who is not playing the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), has all but ruled himself out of the Champions Trophy as well after suffering a shoulder injury during the recent Border-Gavaskar series. The 25-year-old underwent surgery on his left shoulder in England last week and the doctor advised him it might take two-three months to recover. Thus, it’s unlikely

the elegant right-handed batsman will recover in time for the Champions Trophy starting June 1 in the UK. “I will just have to wait and see but the chances are very, very slim,” Rahul was quoted as saying by the Times of India. “I couldn’t get into a few positions because my shoulder kept dislocating. That’s why I couldn’t play a lot of shots, had to restrict myself. I played with a lot of medication and taping. Surgery was

to fix it on the inside.” Rahul suffered the shoulder injury during the first Test against Australia in Pune in late February, but played through the series despite the pain. He finished the series as India’s secondhighest run-getter, with 393 runs at 65.50 including six fifties in seven innings, behind Cheteshwar Pujara (405). India won the series 2-1. Rahul, who has played just six ODIs for India, participated in all the three one-day matches against England at home in January and is disappointed with the prospect of missing out on further action. “The doctor said it will take two-three months (to recover). Each body is different, so you don’t know how it recovers. For now, it is two to three weeks of relaxing and after that, I will start physiotherapy. My rehab will start from there,” said Rahul.

Olympic hurdles champion Rollins banned LOS ANGELES, Apr 21 (Agencies): Reigning Olympic 100m hurdles champion Brianna Rollins has been handed a one-year suspension for failing to properly file whereabouts information for out-of-competition testing, said the US Anti-Doping Agency. Her punishment includes loss of all results retroactive to September 27, 2016, the date of her last missed whereabouts report, but doesn’t affect the Rio gold won by Rollins. The ban would keep her out of this year’s IAAF World Championships in August at London. USADA said in a state-

Brianna Rollins

ment that the 25-year-old athlete, who led a US podium sweep of the 100m hurdles at the Rio Games, received three “whereabouts failures” over the course of 12 months, which constitutes a doping rule violation. Rollins did complete

eight out-of-competition tests over the course of 2016 and did not test positive. She also passed all eight incompetition drug tests she took last year. But Rollins was unavailable for tests on April 27, September 13 and September 27, for reasons that appear in the written report by the panel from the American Arbitration Association that heard her appeal to be mix-ups. A statement released by her representatives said at least one of the missed tests was the result of confusion over the computer program used to give whereabouts to drug testing officials.

Real face Atletico in Champions League semis Nyon, Apr 21 (Agencies): Real Madrid will take on city rivals Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals, with Monaco facing Juventus. The draw at UEFA headquar ters in Nyon means the Madrid rivals cannot contest a third final in four years after Real’s victories in 2014 and last year. Instead Zinedine Zidane and Diego Simeone will do battle in the last four, with the first leg at the Bernabeu and the second across town at the Vicente Calderon. Monaco will be at home for the first leg of their semi-final against Juve, the 2015 runners-up, and the winners of that tie will be designated the ‘home’ team for the final in Cardiff on June 3.
