TR Zeliang asks govt not to give step-motherly treatment to dists DIMAPUR, APR 20 (NPN): Senior NPF leader and leader of opposition (LoO) TR Zeliang has urged the State government not to give step-motherly treatments to certain districts but rather take up the fight against COVID-19 with no ism and political colour. Participating in a review meeting with Peren district officials, including deputy commissioner, superintendent of police, chief medical officer, food & civil supplies (F&CS) officials, representatives from civil society organisations and NGOs at Peren town after visiting the designated COVID-19 Hospital at Jalukie and the district hospital at Peren on Monday, Zeliang announced that opposition would continue to render unceasing support to the State government. suggestions offered in this regard. “No political party is immune to the virus and, as such, a concerted effort is the need of the hour. Only then can there be progress in breaking the chain of this dreaded virus,” he stressed. The former chief minister regretted that the designated COVID-19 Hospital at Jalukie was not “wellprepared” to treat positive cases. From zero ventilators to non-existent ICU to poor quality PPE kits, he said the reality was nothing close to the claims made by the government. Likening doctors and nurses with generals leading the battle, he remarked that there could be no hope of winning the battle if they were poorly equipped. There should not be any distinction between districts as no district was corona proof, he stressed. The LoO expressed

his anguish at the PPE kits being made available to the doctors and nurses at the hospital under the label “HIV kit”. He wanted to know whether this was the same kit made available to other hospitals in the State and whether this was the standard PPE kits to be used to treat COVID-19 symptomatic patients or whether the doctors and nurses would risk it as there weren’t any made available. Zeliang also interacted with apex tribal bodies and NGOs that are tirelessly assisting and helping the government agencies in keeping vigil in these challenging times. Given that daily wage earners and weaker section of the society were most affected, Zeliang took the opportunity to sensitise about various Central government schemes under National Food Security Act.
