Judiciary under serious threat: CJI Rejects sexual harassment charges; claims conspiracy by ‘bigger force’

An apex court bench of CJ Gogoi, Justice Arun Mishra and Justice Sanjeev Khanna conducted the hearing at 10.30 a.m. after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta urgently mentioned the matter.

A three-judge special bench headed by Gogoi was constituted after a sworn affidavit by the woman, copies of which were sent to the residences of 22 apex court judges, became public.

There was no immediate reaction from the government or any major political party. CJI also said that the woman had a criminal record and two FIRs were lodged against her.

“How can she become a Supreme Court staff when an FIR was pending against her,” the CJI asked, adding that two criminal cases were also pending against her husband.

The court, which said the judiciary “cannot be made a scapegoat”, said the media should not publish the woman’s complaint without verifying its truth.

NEW DELHI, APR 20 (IANS/PTI): Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on Saturday said the independence of the judiciary is under threat after allegations of sexual harassment against him, over which the Supreme Court held an urgent hearing.

“I will sit on this bench and discharge my duties without fear and favour till my tenure is over,” Chief Justice Gogoi said at an urgent hearing on a matter of great public importance after there were media reports alleging sexual harassment charges against him.

“Things have gone too far. Judiciary cannot be made a scapegoat”, Justice Gogoi said.

There was a larger conspiracy to destabilise the judiciary which has remained independent, he said.

up against Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi prompting him to convene an urgent extraordinary hearing on Saturday and assert that the charges by a former apex court staffer were “unbelievable” and part of a conspiracy by some “bigger force” to “deactivate” the CJI’s office.

As the allegations by the former woman staffer who had worked at Gogoi’s home office in Delhi and dating back to October stunned the judiciary, Gogoi said he would not stoop too low even to deny them.

At the hurriedly called hearing in Court No 1 presided by him after the allegations were carried by some news portals based on the affidavit by the woman, the apex court said it is leaving the issue to the “wisdom of media” to show restraint and act responsibly so that independence of judiciary

DIMAPUR, APR 20 (NPN): Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds hit several part of Nagaland on April 20 afternoon.

In Dimapur, a number of trees were uprooted and power supply lines were also snapped at several locations. However, the power department personnel were able to restore the lines.

Similar activities were also reported in other parts of Nagaland.

There were also reports of heavy rain with hail in some places across the state. No injuries were reported till the time of filing this report.

Rains likely to continue

Rain and thundershower activities are likely to increase once again over most parts of the North East states in the wake of a Cyclonic Circulation that has developed over Meghalaya

and its adjoining areas.

According to meteorologists at Skymet, the combined effect of the Cyclonic Circulation and moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal is expected to increase rainfall activity in Nagaland, Assam, Meghalaya and Manipur.

This rainfall activity is expected to continue for two to three days. Heavy to very heavy rains are ruled out, but isolated intense spells are in the offing for NEregion. Rains will be accompanied by lightning strikes and strong surface winds. One or two places may also report hailstorm activities.

Also, the Anti-Cyclone which was over central parts of the Bay of Bengal has now shifted towards North Bay of Bengal.

Due to this movement of the weather system, humid winds from the Bay of Bengal are feeding moisture to the North East states.

NEW DELHI, APR 20 (AGENCIES): Election Commission (EC) has banned Eros Now’s Original Series Modi: Journey Of A Common Man, a web series that chronicles the life of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

EC has directed Eros Now to stop the streaming of the web series and remove all its content till further notice. Earlier, EC stalled the release of Bollywood biopic PM Narendra Modi from releasing on April 11.

EC issued a notice to Eros Now and wrote, “It was brought to our notice that a web series “Modi-Journey of a Common Man, having 5 episodes is available on your platform. You’re directed to stop forthwith the online streaming & remove all connected content of the series till further orders.”

The web series has been written by writer and Censor Board member Mihir Bhuta and Radhika Anand. The series has been directed by Umesh Shukla of Oh My God fame. The series has been shot in rural Gujarat, Siddhpur and Vadnagar, the real locations where Modi grew up.

NEW DELHI, APR 20 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday asserted that the BJP is committed to ‘desh bhakti’, while Congress is dedicated to ‘vote bhakti’ as part of its appeasement politics. Attacking Narendra Modi, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Saturday said there has never been a “weaker government” and “weaker Prime minister” than the incumbent ones, as she sought Priyanka Gandhi (File) to highlight the values and virtues of a true leader.

Campaigning in Wayanad from where her brother and party chief Rahul Gandhi is contesting, she claimed the prime minister, who cannot take out one day to visit even a single house in his constituency in five years, does not respect the people of the country.

“A Prime Minister who is afraid of questions, who is afraid to answer people when they ask him what he wants to do for them, who is afraid of criticism, who cannot tolerate dissent is not a strong Prime Minister,” she said. She said a government which suppresses its own people, that does not allow freedom of speech, or to practice own religion or culture, is not a strong government.

“Weakest of all is the government that divides you instead of uniting. That makes you afraid instead of filling you with courage. That makes you worried of speaking your views in public. That’s the weakest form of governance that could possibly exist,” she said during a rally at Areekode.

She asked the voters of Wayanad to consider democracy and the vote as their weapons.

BHOPAL, APR 20 (PTI): Election Commission (EC) Saturday issued a showcause notice to Malegaon blast accused and BJP candidate from Bhopal Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur over her remark about Hemant Karkare, the Maharashtra ATS chief who was killed in the 26/11 terror attack, an official said here.

EC bans web series on PM Narendra Modi

MUMBAI, APR 20 (IANS): Indigenously-designed and constructed guided missile destroyer ‘Imphal’ was launched at the Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. yard here on Saturday morning.

As per maritime traditions, Reena Lanba, wife of Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba named the ship and broke a coconut on the 3,037 tonnes ship’s bow prior to the launch

amidst invocations from the Atharvaveda.

The ship is the third in the Project 15B vessels – the earlier ones launched are ‘Vishakhapatnam’ (2015) and ‘Murmagoa’ in 2016 – which feature cutting edge advanced technology and are comparable to ships of similar class anywhere globally.

Designed by the Indian Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design, each ship spans 163

metres long and 17.4 metres at beam and displaced 7,300 tonnes. They are propelled by four gas turbines to achieve speeds in excess of 30 knots.

The P15B destroyers incorporate new design concepts for improved survivability, sea keeping, stealth and manoeuvrability, besides carrying and operate two multiple role helicopters. Enhanced stealth features are been achieved through shaping the hull and use of radar transparent deck fitting which makes them difficult to detect by the enemy.

The ships are packed with an array of state-ofthe-art weapons and sensors, including multi-functional surveillance radars and vertically launched missile system for long distance engagement of shore, seabased and air targets, said a defence official.

DIMAPUR: Good Friday, the Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ at Calvary, is observed during the Holy Week on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday. It was observed with special services across Nagaland on April 19. Following are some reports of the event as celebrated in Nagaland.

MHCC: Parishioners of Mary Help of Christian Cathedral (MHCC) celebrated Good Friday in memory of Christ’s Passion, crucifixion and death, with Most Rev. Dr. James Thoppil, Bishop of Kohima, as the main celebrant on April 19.

ZYF 13th General Assembly on May 17

DIMAPUR: Zeliangrong Youth Front (ZYF) held its executive meeting on April 15 at the ZYF Head Office in Imphal.

Patton in a condolence message described late Rokonicha as a man of simplicity, kindness and a down to earth leader who had spent his life time in public service. He added that late Rokonicha’s contributions towards the upliftment of Naga society at large will be fondly remembered.

Patton said that his untimely demise has created a huge vacuum in Naga society which will be difficult to fill. On behalf of BJP Nagaland, Y. Patton conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and prayed that the Almighty grant them strength and fortitude to bear this loss.

Kohima Diocese gets Priests’ Home DIMAPUR: A Priests’ Home for the Diocese of Kohima was blessed and inaugurated on April 17, in the presence of priests, sisters and the laity.

A press release from secretary to Bishop, Fr. Victor Renthungo stated that Most Rev. Dr. James Thoppil, the Bishop of Kohima, officiated the rite of blessing.

Fr. OC Abraham, the senior most Priest of the Diocese of Kohima inaugurated the new Priests’ Home.

Bishop James Thoppil, congratulated and thanked benefactors and persons responsible for making the Priests’ Home a reality.

He also said that senior and retired priests have the right to a comfortable stay. He further added that priests, after slogging for the mission, need a decent place to be taken care.

Speaking on the occasion, Fr. OC Abraham, appealed to the laity to love their priests.

Earlier Fr. Sajan Joseph, spoke words of welcome. He promised his continual support for smooth running of the home. The highlights of the programs were the Prayer of Blessing, prayer of the Faithful and Sprinkling of Holy water inside and outside the new building.

Health Mela organized in Longchem

DIMAPUR: A free Health Mela was conducted at Longchem PHC under Mokokchung district on April 17 in which people from nearby villages availed free medical services. The Health Mela was organised by the District Health Society (DHS), Mokokchung under the department of Health & Family Welfare Kohima, Nagaland.

A press release from District Program Management Unit (DPMU), NRHM Mokokchung stated that in a short inaugural program, the Adhoc Town chairman of Longchem

welcomed the health team and thanked the department for conducting the camp for people living in hard to reach areas.

Altogether 227 patients were examined and given free medicines. 16 dental extractions and nine dental fillings (restoration) were done. 68 people went through eye screenings in which seven cases of cataract were detected and referred to the IMDH for further treatment. Two Laparoscopic sterilization and four Copper T insertions were also done during the camp.

The IEC staff conducted FGD& IPC and distributed leaflets on different health programs.

The DVBO Mokokchung and team also conducted a training session for ASHAs on malaria elimination strategies during the camp.

The team was led by deputy CMO, DVBO, gynaecologist, Dr. Ademla and her laparoscopic team, MOs from nearby health units, a dental surgeon, opthalmic assistant, IEC and NHM staffs, and were assisted by six ASHAs from nearby villages.

Senapati records highest voter turnout

IMPHAL, Apr 20: Senapati recorded the highest voter turnout among the districts of Manipur in the recently concluded two-seat Lok Sabha elections.

The district recorded 92.74% voter turnout. Out of 156114 eligible voters, 144773 used their franchise in the district included in the Outer Manipur (ST) Parliamentary Constituency that went on poll on April 11 and re-poll on April 18.

Of the three Assembly segments in the district, Mao Assembly segment again recorded highest voter turnout with 93.23% while the other two segments - Karong and Tadubi recorded 92.47%.

Mao Assembly segment of the district was at the top among the 60 Assembly

segments recording highest number of voter turnout.

Karong and Tadubi were together in the second position, Heingang Assembly segment in Imphal East district, the home constituency of state chief minister N Biren Singh emerged third.

The Assembly segment recorded 91.13% against the overall voter turnout record of the district (Imphal East) 82.99%. Among the districts, Churachandpur recorded lowest voter turnout as per the final poll report of the state chief electoral officer (CEO). The overall poll percentage of the district’s six assembly segments was at 76.20%.

The polling for the two Lok Sabha seats in Manipur was held on April 11 (for Outer seat) and April 18 (Inner seat). The state CEO

put the final overall poll percentage for the Outer seat at 84.20% and that of Inner seat at 81.16%. Meanwhile, re-polls are likely in some polling stations of the Inner Manipur PC where voting was held on April 18.

Addressing the media on Saturday evening, state CEO PK Singh said that fresh-polls in two polling stations under Thongju Assembly segments in Imphal East district will definitely be done as polling in this stations were not completed due to violent incidents on poll day. However, in regards to complaints with re-poll demands received by CEO office, the RO will send recommendation to the Election Commission of India (ECI) based on the findings during post-poll scrutiny.

The RO will send the recom-

mendation on April 22 after which the date for re-poll will be fixed, he added. Mention may be made here that CPI has lodged a complaint for holding re-poll in as many as 28 polling stations spread over four Assembly segments in Imphal East district where the party alleged malpractices and foul play during the voting. The party fielding Dr M Nara Singh as party nominee in the Inner Manipur PC demanded re-poll at 13 polling stations of Andro AC, 11 polling stations of Heingang AC, three polling stations of Keirao AC and one polling station of Thongju AC. While lodging its complaint to ECI through RO, CPI alleged that large scale proxy voting, impersonation, booth capturing and even vandalisation of EVMs were seen in the 28 polling stations during polls on April 18. Meanwhile, the CEO informed the media that in run-up and during the poll, law enforcing agencies helping the election office in smooth and fair conduct of the poll seized banned items including cash worth Rs 37.55 crore. This is highest seizure among the states in the Northeast region, he claimed. He claimed that there were recovery of cash amounting to Rs 91.62 lakh, around 43,500 litres of liquor worth Rs 43.75 lakh, drugs and narcotics items of worth Rs 31.38 crore, 15.17 kg of gold, and precious metals worth Rs 4.82 crore.

EC appoints 4 police observers for Tripura phase 3 polls Agartala, Apr 20 (IANS):The Election Commission has taken a slew of measures including appointment of four central police observers to hold the next phase of polling in the Tripura East Lok Sabha constituency, where election was deferred to April 23, citing an “unconducive security situation”, an official said here on Saturday.

In an unprecedented move, the poll panel has appointed three central police observers and a special central police observer to closely oversee the use of security forces in polling in the mountainous tribal reserved parliamentary constituency.

DIMAPUR, APR 20: A police vehicle escorting vehicles carrying EVM machines met with an accident near Bokajan Village in Karbi Anglong District in the night of April 18/19. A press release from the defence wing of the Press Information Bureau stated that the Army on receiving a request from ADG Police (Law and Order), Assam, provided necessary assistance to three policemen and one civilian injured in the accident. The Army immediately swung into action and the Military Hospital at Dimapur was alerted.

Patients who had multiple head and chest injuries, on arrival were immediately resuscitated and admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital. A surgical team attended to the injured and provided the necessary treatment.

The army further confirmed that the condition of all the injured were stable and they were out of danger.

Boy electrocuted, two critically injured trying to save him Correspondent

IMPHAL, Apr 20: Two boys could have died trying to save a 10-year-old team-mate who was electrocuted in Manipur’s interior Ukhrul district Saturday morning.

The deceased was identified as MK Thotthan, son of MK Rocky of Phalang village under Phungyar subdivision of Ukhrul district.

The student of Class IV at Phungyar Tribal School was charred to death on the spot.

The two boys who sustained severe burn injuries were Ngahanthem Jajo, son of Ningreishang Jajo, and Okpei Jajo, son of Malungchang Jajo, both from the same village of the deceased.

The two were transported by an ambulance to Ukhrul district hospital where they were admitted.

The police who quoted the villagers said that the ill-

fated incident occurred at a place between Phalang and Goda villages after he happened to step on live high tension wire on the ground after electric pole snapped on Saturday morning.

His two friends sustained critical burn injuries when they attempted to rescue him by pulling him out.

When villagers rushed to the spot, the two boys were also found lying on the ground in an unconscious state. Having no vehicle to rush them to nearby hospital, the villagers contacted the district hospital authority at Ukhrul district headquarters after which an ambulance was sent to them.

The partially charred body of the boy was also retrieved from the spot for necessary official procedures, reports said.

The deceased Thotthan and his friends staying at hostel study were at home

for the Good Friday and Easter holidays.

The ill-fated incident occurred on the way backed home from Goda village where they had gone to visit the grandmother of the deceased.

Meanwhile, two persons appeared to be nonManipuris were found murdered at New Keiphundai area along Imphal-Jiribam section of NH-37, two and half kilometre away from Tousem police station of Tamenglong district early today (Saturday) morning.

The bodies had several injuries marks all over their bodies, mostly on the face and head and were discovered by villagers at around 6.30 am.

Police suspect the two persons were beaten to death by miscreants who brought them there. The bodies were retrieved from the spot and transferred to the JNIMS hospital morgue, Imphal, police said.

RGU inks MoU with IILDS on comprehensive HBV care Doimukh (Arunachal), Apr 20: The Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) at Rono Hills in Doimukh, Arunachal Pradesh has has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kolkata-based Indian Institute of Liver & Digestive Sciences (IILDS), a unit of the Liver Foundation (West Bengal), which would engage the two institutions on co-operation and implementation of a communitybased project on delivery of comprehensive HBV care in Arunachal Pradesh, comprising population screening and linkage to care.

The John C. Martin Foundation (USA) is funding the project with the LFWB, IILDS as the primary recipient of the grant and RGU as the sub-recipient.

The project would also conduct screening of hepatitis B and hepatitis C to identify those currently in-

fected, previously exposed, immunized by vaccination and at-risk of infection.

After the results are analyzed and reported, individuals will be followed up according to the status of the screening results.

Those with chronic infection will be referred to infectious disease or liver specialists.

Vaccination will be offered to those who are at risk and vaccination of infants will be conducted, starting with birth dose according to WHO guidelines.

Manmohan defends Nyay; says it won’t entail new taxes

New Delhi, Apr 20 (IANS): Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday said that Nyay scheme of the Congress will usher in an era of minimum income guarantee in India, end poverty and restart the economic engine which has “come to a stop” under the Narendra Modi government. In a statement, Singh said that implementation of Nyay, which envisages to provide Rs 72,000 per family every year to the poorest 20 per cent of population, would not entail any new tax on the middle class.

He said that the Congress is committed to fiscal discipline and Nyay would cost between 1.2 per cent and 1.5 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at its peak.

“Our nearly $3-trillion economy has the fiscal capacity to absorb this expenditure. There will be no need for any new taxes on the middle class to finance Nyay. The economic stimulus that Nyay will provide will further help in fiscal discipline. It has been conceptualised after much thought and consultations with experts,” Singh said.

He said Nyay is a powerful idea with dual objectives. “On March 25, 2019, Congress President Rahul

Gandhi unveiled Nyay -Nyuntam Aay Yojana -- to wipe out the last remnants of poverty and to restart stalled economic activity in our nation,” he said.

Singh said that Nyay has been received with tremendous enthusiasm by people and discussed widely across the nation. “Nearly 70 per cent of Indians were poor when India attained Independence in 1947. With sound policies adopted by successive governments over the last seven decades, poverty levels have been brought down from 70 per cent to 20 per cent now. It is time now to renew our pledge to wipe out the last remains of poverty,” he said. Singh said Nyay would ensure a basic level of dignity and respect for every Indian family. “By providing direct income support, Nyay will empower our poor with economic

freedom and choice. With Nyay, India will usher in an era of a minimum income guarantee and help create a new social contract for a new welfare state.” “Nyay will also help restart our economic engine that has come to a stop today. Money in the hands of the needy will stimulate demand in the economy which can then lead to increased economic activity and job creation, referred to as the Keynesian effect by economists. At a time when private investment and industrial production are low, Nyay can help bring our economy back to life and create new factories and jobs,” he added.

Singh referred to the economic reforms when he was the Finance Minister in 1991 and to the rural employment guarantee scheme brought by the UPA government led by him.

“Just as we brought in a new paradigm for India’s development with the delicensing regime in 1991 -- a rights-based approach to governance including the Right to Work under MGNREGA, I am confident a Congress party-led government in 2019 will implement Nyay successfully and usher in a new model for social justice and prudent economics,” he said.

Yechury asks Rahul to clarify who he will fight Ko l kata , A p r 2 0 (PTI): CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury has urged Rahul Gandhi to explain whether he is keen on fighting the BJP or the Left as he feels that the Congress chief ’s decision to contest from Left stronghold-Wayanad has sent out a different message.

Hinting that Gandhi’s decision won’t prevent the two parties from coming together after election, he spoke about 2004 when the CPI(M)-led Left Front had extended outside support to the Congress-led UPA. He said out of the 61 Left MPs, 57 had won by defeating the Congress.

“In all the 20 seats of Kerala, the contest is between the Congress-led UDF and Left-led LDF, whether its Rahul Gandhi or XYZ candidate. We are saying today that defeating the BJP is necessary to save India today,” Yechury told PTI in an interview.

“Now what does Rahul Gandhi want to do is up to him. What is the message he is giving by contesting against the Left in Kerala unlike his mother or grandmother who had contested against the BJP from Karnataka. He should tell the country whether he is keen on fighting BJP or the Left. He should clarify

this,” he said.

Indira Gandhi had contested from Chikmagalur in October 1978 and Sonia Gandhi from Bellary in 1999 in Karnataka.

Fighting against the BJP is one thing, fighting against the Left sends out a different message, he said.

Yechury said if Gandhi was keen on sending a message of united India by contesting from a southern state he could have contested from Tamil Nadu or Karnataka.

“But looking at the reports of cash seizure from various places during the electioneering, one wonders why voters take money to vote. Is this the value of our freedom fighters, who gave us independence?” he asked.

Hazare felt that the parties’ approach of coming to power by hook or crook has resulted in criminalisation of politics. “The sanctity of Parliament and state assemblies have come under threat,” he said.

He expressed sadness over not getting any response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to his 32 letters written on a range of issues. He said the appointment of Lokpal recently done by the Centre was not up to his expectations.

“But, I am confident that it will put a break on corrupt practices,” Hazare added.

Satisfied with naval fleet, says Admiral Lanba

Mumbai, Apr 20 (PTI): Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sunil Lanba Saturday said he was satisfied with the force’s fleet and said more aircraft and submarines would be inducted in the days to come.

“Now we have self sufficient and reliant teams of experts to make aircraft carriers to advanced submarines,” he said.

“We are so self-reliant that SAIL is manufacturing the entire steel required to build submarines and warships. Even weapons and sensors are now being made in India. Indigenous content in P15 Bravo is more than 75 per cent,” he said.

Lanba informed that indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant was undergoing outfitting in Cochin Shipyard and its harbour acceptance were on trial stage.

“Its harbour acceptance are in progress and sea acceptance trial will commence in the later half

of this year. It will be delivered to the Indian Navy by 2021,” he said.

When asked about the delivery of previously launched Visakhapatnam (2015) and Mormugao warships (2016) and which are being fitted with equipment in Mazagon Dock, Lanba said the delivery time line of these warships will start in April 2021 and go on till 2024.

He admitted there has been delay in the delivery of these warships launched under the Project P-15 Bravo.

“As far as project (P-15B) is concerned, there has been a delay in the first two ships but Mazagon Dock is going to catch up and the project will be completed as per scheduled time line of 2024,” he said.

An empty tomb

hen Christ was crucified at the cross of Calvary on Friday and resurrected on the third day (Sunday) which He prophesied often when He went about healing and preaching, God fulfilled the divine purpose of redemption of His creation through Christ. Redemption is the central theme of the Christian faith. In fact the empty tomb, the place where Jesus was embalmed and placed, near Golgotha, was fulfilment of the prophesy of resurrection as made by Prophet Isaiah, seven hundred years before Christ was born.From the earliest apostolic period, the reality of the empty tomb-- the biblical truth that the tomb of Jesus of Nazareth was found empty by His disciples-- has been at the center of the Christian proclamation. The enemies of Christ, the Sanhedrin, accepted that the tomb was empty even though they had ensured that its entrance was blocked and sealed with a very huge bolder then cemented.Even the authors of the gospels had given an account of the empty tomb. The first who saw the empty tomb were women-Mary Magdalene, Joanna and Mary the mother of James. They had gone to bury Jesus and found the tomb empty. The accounts of scores of Jews and Roman officials testify to the Biblical account. It is not about Christ’s triumph over death but what it means for the message of the Gospel of salvation. When Christ rose from the dead on the third day, it was Resurrection Sunday (first day of the week) and not Easter Sunday. Resurrection was not a “coming back” from the dead. It was a going beyond death. It was not a coming back to mortal existence (as was true for Lazarus). It was nothing less than Jesus’ entrance into the life of God. Christians believe that the risen Christ can never die as He entered into an entirely new kind of existence: an immortal existence that robbed the grave of its victim, not temporarily, but eternally. If Christ had not resurrected on the third day, Christians would be hopeless and still searching for redemption from sins! The other corroboration comes from over five hundred people especially the terrified and in-hiding disciples who were definitely exhilarated that their teacher had resurrected. Among the most notable of Christ’s apostles was Paul, who as Saul, hunted, tortured and arrested Christians. Paul was not one of Christ’s disciples but after the encounter with Christ on his way to Damascus on a Christian hunting expedition, he became one of the most prominent evangelist. The entire structure of Christianity and indeed of any hope for eternal life and for any meaning to human existence - stands with Christ’s resurrection and without it, Christ would have passed away into history as just one of the many prophets.

What does the Resurrection mean to Christians? To them Christ’s agony and death have been turned into victory. It means life, and hope. To them, resurrection proves Jesus’ case, His teachings and claims that the Lord that Christians follow, is who He says He is.

Without the resurrection, there would have been no Christian faith and neither salvation by faith through grace, no connection with God, no remission from sins, no purpose for life, no hope, no reason for living, and no reason to for evangelism, discipleship, or missions or any other kind of ministry-all would be futile and meaningless.

If we have received the Holy Spirit, God expects the work of the Holy Spirit to be exhibited in us.

The servant justified himself, while condemning his lord on every point, as if to say, “Your demand on me is way out of proportion to what you gave to me.” Have we been falsely accusing God by daring to worry after He has said, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you”? (Matthew 6:33). Worrying means exactly what this servant implied— “I know your intent is to leave me unprotected and vulnerable.” A person who is lazy in the natural realm is always critical, saying, “I haven’t had a decent chance,” and someone who is lazy in the spiritual realm is critical of God. Lazy people always strike out at others in an independent way.

Never forget that our capacity and capability in spiritual matters is measured by, and based on, the promises of God. Is God able to fulfill His promises? Our answer depends on whether or not we have received the Holy Spirit.

The Manger, the Cross and Resurrection

N

o one aspect of the three (the Manger, the Cross and the Resurrection) explains in its entirety what Christians believe. The birth leading to the cross and to the resurrection bring our belief and faith to completion. The love, forgiveness and the glorious hope for Christian is what we believe and look forward to. Many today leave Jesus at the manger without following him to the cross and the resurrection. For this reason, we become powerless Christians.

Christmas is thestarting point of our salvation. It doesn’t end there. This passion/holy week we must also go back to the Manger to consider the deep love of God for us. Only then, the cross, the symbol of suffering and shame make sense where God allowedhis son to die the death we deserve (Romans 6:23).

The ugly side of thecross makes things beautiful onthe other side. We come across two contradictory situations.

On the one hand, we see the agony of rejection, the suffering and the pain which Jesus endured on the cross for us.

On the other hand, we see the intense expression of love and sacrifice. “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but your will be done” (Luke 22:44). In pain and in suffering Jesus was willing endure whatever the Father intends for our salvation. So much pain in doing the Father’s will that Jesus should

utter such as this: “MyGod, my God why has Thou forsaken me” (Matthew 27:46). On the cross, oursin intersected with the holiness God. The pain and sufferingbecome the fountain from which forgiveness and healing flowed Incomprehensible love was demonstrated on the cross.

Thiswhy Paul said to the Corinthians, the cross is a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Greeks but to those who believe, it is the power of God unto salvation (1 Corinthians1:22). The cross on which Jesus died accomplishes our redemption. Atlast when all is said and done Jesus himself declared, “It is Finished” (John 19:30), to the hearing of his tormentors. It is done. Accomplished. Paid in full.

The hymn written by Jessie Hunter Brown explains it best when she wrote: “The way of the cross leads home, and I must go by the blood sprinkled way.

For the way of the cross leads home. “Without the cross we have no other way to make it to God. Thestory of our salvation doesn’t end there. We have a glorious future, a glorious hope to which we all await. Faith is incomplete without our glorious hope and that glorious hope lies in the resurrection. What value is there when we cannot look beyond what we believe? Our faith would be a dead faith.

The manger and the cross are incomplete without the resurrection. What if Chris-

tian faith ends in death? The eternal life that Jesus came to give would be considered as the biggest lie. We will have no message of hope and our faith will be futile. Christian hope in eternal life and the resurrection is not a preference. As we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord, few things need be noted so that resurrection becomes a reality and not just an event.

1. The Christian’s bodily resurrection directly corresponds to that of Christ’s (1 Cor 15:12-28).

2. Resurrection is central to the gospel message (1Cor 15:4).

3. Resur rection gives hope beyond this life (1Cor 15:35-49).

4. Resurrection declares the ultimate triumph of Jesus over sin and death (1Cor 15:5457).

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law

ave we ever wondered how an unchangeable holy God would make unconditional promises of blessing to an Idolatrous pagan? Such a thing seems Inconceivable but that is exactly what God did when he entered into a covenant relationship with Abram. This indeed presents a great problem, but apart from the giving of the law the full impact of this difficulty would never have been realized even though, as the apostle Paul has clearly shown in Ga1.3:2-18 the blessings of the Abrahamic covenant could never have been granted through the law, i.e., on the basis of the conditions of the Mosaic covenant ,it was necessary before the blessings of the Abraham’s covenant could be fully realized, for Paul, the law was not a dead end side trail but something lying squarely on the path of redemptive history. Paul, in Ga1.3:13-14 indicates that there is an important connection between the redemption of Isreal from the curse of the law and bestowal of the blessing of Abraham on the gentiles. Paul writes, “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law being made a curse for us, because it is written, “Cursed is everyone who have been hanged on a tree”. But, interestingly enough, on whom was this curse pronounced? Was it universal in scope? No, it was pronounced on the members of the covenant community of Israel if they refused to obey the Mosaic covenant In other words, only those who were under the law were under the curse of the law the gentiles could not be redeemed from the curse of the law because they were never under the curse of the law. The gentiles were under the universal curse that was placed on Adam and all his posterity under Mosaic law, those who were hanged on a tree were cursed .The laws made it illegal to leave the body hanging overnight This law applied to Jesus, who was executed on a tree, although He had done no wrong. Jesus dead body was removed from the cross on the same day of His death and was buried.

When Adam and Eve chose to disobey they experienced God’s swift retribution in removal from the garden and denial of access to the tree of life. Moreover, with one notable exception, their sin and its consequences has been borne by every descendent since that day (Rom.5:12-21), immediately subsequent to the fall and within the context of the Pronouncements of His curse was upon man, God disclosed His purpose and determination to redeem men from the very curse. He was pronouncing that disclosure came in the Proto evangelium (first gospel preached

by God himself Gen :3:15).

We are not redeemed from the obligation to love the Lord our God with all our heart and soul and strength and mind and neighbor as ourselves.

The law is comprehended in these two Commandments, (Mtt.22:40) and love is the fulfilling of the Law (Rom.13:10).

To Suppose that we are delivered from the law in the sense of such obligation would bring Contradiction into the design of Christ’s work. It would contradict the very nature of God to think that any person can ever be relieved of the necessity to love God with the whole heart and to obey his Commandments.

“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us for it is written; cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree.”(Ga1.3:13) the curse of the law is its penal sanction. This is essentially the wrath of curse of God, the displeasure which rests upon every infraction of the law’s demand. “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law, and do them” (Gal. 3:10) without deliverance from this curse there could be no salvation. It is from this curse that Christ has purchased his people and the price of the purchase was that he himself became a curse. He became so identified with the curse resting upon His people that the whole of it in all its unrelieved intensity became his. That curse he

bore and that curse he exhausted. That was the price paid for this redemption and the liberty secured for the beneficiaries is that there is no more curse.

The people of God under the Old Testament were children of God by divine adoption of grace.

But they were as children under age, under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the Father (Gal. 4:2). Of this Tutelary, Pedagogical discipline the Mosaic economy was the Minister (Ga1.3:23-24).Paul is contrasting this period of tutelage under the Mosaic law with the full liberty bestowed upon all believers, whether Jews or gentiles, under the gospel. This full liberty and privilege he calls the adoption of sons (Gal. 4:5). Christ came in order that this adoption might be secured. The consideration particularly relevant to the price paid for this redemption is the fact that Christ was made under law. He was born under the Mosaic law; He was subjected to its conditions and He fulfilled its terms. In Him the Mosaic law realized its purpose, and its meaning received in Him its permanent validity and embodiment.

This redemption has significant not only for Jews but also for gentiles. In the gospel economy not even gentiles are require to undergo the tutelary discipline to which Israel was subjected “But now that faith is come we are no longer under a tutor. For we are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus” (Gal, 3:25-26). This great grace, that all without distinction or discrimination are sons of God by faith of Christ Jesus, is the fruit of a redemption secured by the fact that Christ was made and the Mosaic law and fulfill its terms and purpose.

Christ has redeemed us from the necessity of keeping the law as the condition of our justification and acceptance of God without such redemption there could been no salvation. It is obedience of Christ himself that has secured these releases. For it is by his obedience that many will be constituted righteous (Rom. 5:19) In

other words, it is the active and passive obedience of Christ that is the price of this redemption, active and passive obedience because he was made under law, fulfilled by all the requirements of righteousness and met the sanctions of justice.

The strength of sin is the law and where no law is there no transgressions (I Cor.15:5, Rom.4:15) But the Scripture also brings redemption into direct relation to sin.

When Paul wrote, “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law,” (Gal. 3:13) his reference was to the redeeming work of Christ for all believers (Gal. 3:10), “for as many are of the works of the law are under a curse”. Paul cites Duet 27:26 in support of his statement “curse is everyone who does not continue in all the things that are written in this book of the law to do them”. But on whom was this curse pronounced? Was it universal in Scope? No, it was pronounced on the members of the covenant community Israel if they refuse to obey the Mosaic covenants. In other words, only those who were under

the law were under the curse of the law. The gentiles could not be redeemed from the curse of the law because they were never under the curse of the law.

The gentiles were under universal curse that was placed on Adam and all his posterity. It might be asked at this point, how gentiles could receive any benefits from Christ’s work in relation to the law and it curse. The answer is that both Israel and the gentiles possessed the same sinful nature. Both had the same spiritual needs (they were guilty and needed a perfect righteousness in the present of God (Rom.3:23). “For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse”(Gal. 3:10). We cannot be under the curse and yet be partakers of the blessing. A man cannot be in darkness and in light at the same moment he cannot be under the curse of the law and under the blessing of the gospel, too. We may have been moral and outwardly commendable.

But the heart and intent are what the lord looks at. And because we have not loved the lord our God with all our

heart, with all our soul, with all our mind and with all our strength and have not loved our neighbor as ourselves, we have came short of the demand of his righteous law and we are under the curse.

Not only shall we be so in the day when, “Depart, you Curse” (Mtt 7:23), will be the final and hopeless doom of the wicked. But today we are under the curse if we are of the works of the law. If we are not by Christ redeemed from the curse of the law. If we have not, by faith, appropriated His great sacrifice, we are under the present curse of God. Dare we sleep tonight under the curse? Will we be wake tomorrow and go forth to our business under the curse? Can we sport and laugh and frolic under the curse? God grant we may be sufficiently sensible to be filled with anguish at the sound of these dreadful words “under the curse”.

May God help us to live a worthy life of Christ-likeness in this season of Celebration. Shalom.

I would like to draw the kind attention of the concern authority regarding the risks of life faced by the students of Don Bosco School as well as other pedestrians while crossing the road at the junction of Fellowship colony from where the divider starts.

It has been observed that most of the students of Don Bosco School use to cross this junction either to go to school in the morning or to go to their homes after the school but due to non marking of ZEBRZ CROSSING, the school going children as well as others cross the road from any side causing confusion in the mind of the drivers which may lead to any serious mishap/injury/loss of life at any time. Further no Breakers have been found made on the junction due to which the motorists drive their vehicles without slowing down thereby putting serious threat to the life of those who are crossing the junction.

You all may be aware of the fact that recently a convoy of CRPF which was heading towards City Tower collided against the Divider in the same junction in the wee hour causing serious injury to the occupants only who were rushed to nearby hospital.

Had the accident been taken place in the day/ school timing,one could easily imagine the impact of it.

Therefore it is my humble request to the concern authority to look into the matter and take timely action to mark ZEBRA CROSSING at the junction and putting of Breakers in three sides of the Roads leading towards EL-SADAI School, City Tower and DC Court so as to protect/save the precious lives of not only the students but also the pedestrians while crossing this danger junction before it is too late. Let us put into practice the lesson we have learnt during our school days from the adage which says,”A Stitch in time Saves Nine”.

Modi lashes out at Mamata during rally

Buniadpur (WB), Apr 20 (PTI): Lashing out at TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said “speedbreaker didi” has lost her sleep after the first two phases of the Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal.

Addressing an election rally here in South Dinajpur district, Modi accused the chief minister of fooling people in the name of ‘ma, mati and manush’ (mother, land and people) -the slogan of the Trinamool Congress.

“Speedbreaker didi has lost her sleep after the reports that came in post the first and second phase of polling in the state,” the prime minister told a wellattended rally.

Ridiculing Banerjee, Modi said he had initially erred in judging her, but discovered the TMC chief ’s “true colours” after becoming the PM. “When I used to see her on television, and then met her from time to time, I thought she was the true embodiment of simplicity, hardwork, and genuinely interested in Bengal’s development.

“However, after I became the prime minister and saw her activities, my

eyes opened. I have discovered her true colours, and even the children of Bengal have understood the same,” Modi said.

Banerjee will know after May 23 (election results) the outcome of “vandalism, looting people’s money and obstructing development,” he said.

The PM also flayed Banerjee for allowing people from the “neighbouring country” to campaign for the Trinamool Congress in the state.

“It is shameful that people from neighbouring country are campaigning for the TMC. This was done by the party to appease the minority community,” Modi said, referring to Bangladeshi actor Ferdous canvassing for the ruling TMC. “Such a thing has

never happened in India, where people from neighbouring country have been campaigning for a political party,” he said.

The prime minister criticised Banerjee for seeking proof of the Balakot air strikes in Pakistan, and asked her to, instead, collect evidence against those behind chit fund scams.

He also said that tough measures will be taken to identify and stop cross border infiltration after the NDA-led government returns to power.

Modi said after the poll results are declared, “those elements who are trying to stop border fencing will have to face the reality”.

“After May 23, we would take steps to identify and stop cross border infiltration,” he said at Buniadpur, which shares its border

with Bangladesh.

The NDA government is committed to grant citizenship status to refugees, he said.

“During par tition, some people had stayed back in other countries.

But, due to their religion and faith, they have been facing persecution in those countries... Where will they go?” Modi asked.

It is the duty of every Indian and the government to save these people, he said, adding, “It is our commitment to pass the Citizenship Bill in Parliament.”

Some political parties, the PM said, are trying to mislead people on the issue of citizenship.

“Be it the TMC, the Congress or the Left, they have only indulged in politics of dividing people, but we believe in taking everybody along with us,” he said.

Mocking Banerjee’s ‘Bengal model’, Modi said, “Mamata Didi wants to implement her ‘Tolabaji (extortion) Tax’ model of development across the country. But, we would never allow that to happen.”

He added that the poor are remaining poor and it is difficult to carry out religious processions in the state.

Howrah-New Delhi Poorva Express derails near Kanpur Kanpur (UP), Apr 20 (PTI): Twelve coaches of the Howrah-New Delhi Poorva Express derailed near Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh early Saturday, injuring 15 people.

The train was going to New Delhi when the incident occurred near Rooma railway station -- about 20 km from here -- in Kanpur Nagar district around 12.50 am. Four out of the 12 derailed Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches had overturned, North Central Railway public relations officer Amit Malviya said.

General Manager of the North Central Railway Rajiv Chaudhary said an inquiry was ordered in this connection which would be conducted by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, A K Jain.

He said a special train comprising 14 coaches with 900 passengers of Poorva Express left for New Delhi around 5.45 am while another train of 10 coaches left around 7.50 am with the remaining passengers. The coaches that derailed are: S8, S9, B1-B5, A1, A2, HA1, pantry car and an SLR (seating cum luggage rake), according to a statement issued by the railways.

ISIS module: NIA arrests key conspirator from Delhi New Delhi, Apr 20 (PTI): The NIA on Saturday arrested a person from Delhi in connection with its probe against an ISISinspired group, which was allegedly planning suicide attacks and serial blasts, targeting politicians and government installations in Delhi and other parts of north India.

Mohammad Gufran, a resident of Amroha in western Uttar Pradesh (UP), formed a pro-ISIS module namely Harkat Ul Harb-e-Islam with the help of accused persons arrested earlier to wage war against the Government of India, a spokesperson of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) said.

He is the 13th accused to have been arrested in the case. Gufran was one of the key conspirators in planning to carry out terrorist attacks in Delhi NCR and UP, the official said.

He was inspired by the ideology of the dreaded ISIS terror group which is a proscribed organisation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), he said. Investigation revealed that he was instrumental in procure-

ment of arms and ammunition and also explosives to carry out terrorist attacks in Delhi NCR and UP, the official said. With Gufran’s arrest, the NIA has so far arrested 13 men, including a ‘mufti’ from Amroha, who it said were planning suicide attacks and serial blasts targeting politicians and government installations in Delhi and other parts of north India.

Gufran will be produced before the Patiala House court on Sunday, according to the NIA official. The case pertains to a group of pro-ISIS terrorists who formed a terror group which was engaged in acts preparatory to commission of terror attacks with a view to wage war against the Government of India, the official said.

The NIA has said that one Mufti Mohammed Suhail, a resident of Delhi’s Jafrabad in Seelampur, was the ‘Amir’ (local chief) of the pro-ISIS module which mobilised funds and procured weapons, ammunition and explosive materials to prepare improvised explosive devices with his other associates, the NIA official added.

New Delhi, Apr 19 (PTI): Congress national spokesperson and convenor of party’s media cell Priyanka Chaturvedi, who was miffed at the reinstatement of some party workers who had misbehaved with her, resigned from the party and joined the Shiv Sena Friday.

She joined the Shiv Sena in the presence of the party president Uddhav Thackeray, sources said.

Earlier, after quitting all posts in the party, Chaturvedi sent her resignation to Congress President Rahul Gandhi and other senior leaders. “In the last few weeks certain things have convinced me that my services are not valued in the organisation and that I have reached the end of the road. At the same time I also feel that more time that I spend in the organisation will be at the cost of my own self respect and dignity,”Chaturvedi said in her resignation letter.

She has also changed her introduction in her Twitter account where she had

made a clear mention earlier about posts she held in the party. “I am absolutely overwhelmed and grateful with the love and support I have got across board from the nation in the past 3 days.

I consider myself blessed with this immense outpouring of support. Thank you to all who have been a part of this journey,” Chaturvedi tweeted in a farewell message to the party.

In her resignation to Gandhi, she said, “What saddens me is that despite the safety, dignity, empowerment of women being promoted by the party and has been your call to action the same is not reflected in the action of some of the members of the party. JKLF chief seriously ill in NIA custody, alleges family Srinagar, Apr 20 (AGENCIES): The family of the chief of the banned JKLF (Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front), Yasin Malik, has alleged that the 53-year-old separatist leader was in a “serious health condition” inside the Tihar Jail in New Delhi.

The family’s ‘disclosure’ sparked a shutdown in Lal Chowk’s Maisuma area on Saturday.

“We have not been allowed to meet Malik for the past 10 days. Today, the lawyer came to know that he was seriously ill.

He has been on a hunger strike since April 16.

He has been protesting against his illegal detention by the National Investigation Agency [NIA].

We fear for his life,” said Malik’s sister in Srinagar.

New Delhi, Apr 20 (PTI): Japanese car giant Toyota and investment fund SoftBank Vision Fund on April 19 unveiled an investment of $1 billion in US company Uber to drive forward the development of driverless ridesharing services. The latest cash injection, expected to close in the third quarter this year, came amid fevered anticipation of Uber’s public share offering which is expected to be the largest in the tech sector for years.

Toyota has already invested $500 million in Uber as the firm races Googleowned Waymo and a host of other companies, including major automakers, to develop self-driving vehicles.

New Delhi, Apr 20 (PTI): Private lender HDFC Bank Saturday reported a 23 per cent jump in its net profit to Rs 5,885.12 crore for the quarter ended March 2019 on a healthy growth in its net interest income.

The bank had registered a net profit of Rs 4,799.28 crore in the January-March quarter of 2017-18.

Total income for the quarter ended March 31, 2019, stood at Rs 31,204.5 crore, up by 22.1 per cent from Rs 25,549.7 crore for the quarter ended on March 31, 2018, the bank said in a regulatory filing.

Net interest income grew by 22.8 per cent to Rs 13,089.5 crore in the last quarter of FY2018-19 from Rs 10,657.7 crore in the year-ago quarter driven by average asset growth of 19.8 per cent and a core net interest margin of 4.4 per cent, the bank said. On asset front, bank’s gross nonperforming assets (NPAs) were at 1.36 per cent of gross advances as on March 31, 2019, as against 1.30 per cent as on March 31, 2018.

Coverage ratio as on March 31, 2019 was 71 per cent.

Factors like ongoing weekly high central and state government bond auctions too added to the deficit problem, Niyogi said. On an average the central bank has sold about Rs 20,000-30,000 crore state and central government debt in the first two weeks in April.

Liquidity conditions, however, should improve in the coming days amidst the FX swap and a pick-up in government spending.

Mumbai, Apr 20 (PTI): India’s foreign exchange reserves continued its northward push, increasing by USD 1.105 billion to touch USD 414.886 billion in the week to April 12, the Reserve Bank data showed Friday. In the previous week, reserves had increased by USD 1.876 billion to USD 413.781 billion.

The surplus cash balance with the government is now at about Rs 47,333 crore as on April 16 compared to nil balance in the corresponding period last year.

“GST collections towards the end of the week are expected to have further increased the cash balance and worsened liquidity deficit given the absence of aggressive spending,” she said.

MUMBAI, Apr 20 (Agencies): Muted government spending and high election-related spending have created a liquidity deficit of Rs 70,000 crore in the banking system, stymieing the Reserve Bank of India’s record liquidity infusion via bond purchases and the innovative dollar-rupee swap, blunting the recent rate cut and clogging the efficacy of policy transmission.

“System liquidity seems to be slightly more in deficit that is normal at this time of the year,” said Saugata Bhattacharya, chief economist at Axis Bank. “The proximate reason seems to be relatively high government balances with RBI, which might be due to lower spends. Other contributing factors might be higher cash withdrawal, weaker foreign exchange inflows and higher CRR (cash reserve ratio) balances of banks,” he said.

The deficit is at Rs 70,266 crore on April 16 compared to Rs 31,396 crore on April 3, data from the Bloomberg India Banking Liquidity gauge showed.

Gokhale to meet Chinese FM, Azhar likely on agenda

BEIJING, APR 20 (IANS): India’s Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale will be on a twoday China visit from Sunday to meet Chinese State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi where he is likely to discuss the issue of blacklisting Pakistan-based terrorist Masood Azhar.

He will be visiting Beijing for regular consultation and is scheduled to meet Wang on Monday, an official at the Indian Embassy said here.

Gokhale’s visit comes at a time when Beijing is facing mounting international pressure to declare Azhar, wanted in India for grisly terror attacks, an international terrorist at a UN 1267 sanctions committee.

The top Indian diplomat is visiting China the same week when Beijing holds the second edition of the Belt and Road forum, which New Delhi is highly likely to skip over the issue of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The issues of China shielding Azhar and India opposing Beijing’s ambitious connectivity project have caused frictions between the two Asian powers that already deal with a festering border dispute.

Beijing’s move has tested Sino-Indian ties that had been on an upswing after the icebreaking meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year.

Beijing, however, last week said the issue of declaring Azhar an international terrorist was heading for “settlement” and warned the US not to push its own resolution at the UN Security Council. China’s latest technical hold on the resolution at the UN 1267 committee prompted the

US to go directly to the UN Security Council and move and circulate a new resolution at the agency.

This has angered Beijing which says the US bypassing the 1267 panel will complicate matters when “positive progress” on the issue has already been made.

Washington’s move has put Beijing in a bind as it might have to explain its stance at the UN Security Council if it vetoes the resolution. At the UN 1267 committee, a member can do so without explaining.

Gokhale will likely raise the matter with Wang, who is also China’s top diplomat.

Besides, it is also to be seen if India’s opposition to the Belt and Road forum will figure in the talks.

KABUL, APR 20 (IANS): An explosion and gunfire was heard in the centre of the Afghan capital on Saturday as unidentified attackers targeted the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology headquarters where they were battling security forces, officials said.

Interior Ministry spokesperson Nasrat Rahimi tweeted that three suicide bombers had launched an attack on the Ministry of Communication and IT post office building at 11.40 a.m, “taking benefit of a

holy shrine”.

The BBC said that the attack happened in a busy area near one of the city’s most popular hotels, a couple of other ministries and the presidential palace.

It reported that one of the attackers got inside the ministry building. Another detonated his explosives at its boundary wall and the third was shot dead by the

police. No group has yet said it carried out the attack, but it follows the suspension of talks between the Afghan government and Taliban insurgents. But the outfit’s spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said it was not behind the attack. Later, Kabul Police Chief Sayed Mohammad Roshandil was cited as saying by TOLO News that the ministry was “almost evacuated” and that it has at least 2,000 employees.

Egyptians vote in three-day constitution reform referendum

Cairo, Apr 20 (IANS): Egyptians on Saturday voted in a three-day referendum on constitutional reforms that could allow incumbent President Abdel Fattah alSisi to rule until 2030 and give the head of state and the army more power.

Voting stations opened at 7 a.m. and are due to close 12 hours later as over 61 million people will cast their ballots, reports Efe news.

Early in the morning, al-Sisi voted in Heliopolis, an eastern suburb of the capital, Cairo. In Cairo’s district of Zamalek, dozens of people lined up in front of a ballot centre before it had opened to take part in the process that had kicked off for Egyptians living abroad a day earlier. Earlier this week, Egypt’s parliament approved the constitutional amendment.

The modification of Article 140 extends the duration of the presidential term from four to six years, an alteration that is supposed to enter into force the day following the end of the term of his predecessor - which means al-Sisi will remain in office till 2024 - and allows him to seek a third term.

n all-star animated environmental music video featuring the voices of Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran and Ariana Grande has gone viral on social media.

The song Earth, by comedian and rapper Lil Dicky, also has cameos from Katy Perry, Snoop Dogg and Miley Cyrus.

Speaking to Time, Dicky - aka David Burd said: “What started as a silly joke of an idea along the way became the most important thing I’ll ever do.”

A share of proceeds will go to the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation.

Facebook still hosting NZ shooting footage: Report

espite Facebook’s claim that the livestreaming video of the March 15 Christchurch shooting that killed 50 people was removed from its platforms, sections of the raw footage are still available for users to watch, the media reported.

According to a report in Motherboard on Friday, certain videos on Facebook and Instagram show sections of the raw attack footage.

“The world’s biggest and most wellresourced social media network is still hosting copies of the violent attack video on its own platform as well as Instagram,” the report claimed.

Some of the videos are slices of the original 17-minute clip -- trimmed down to one minute or so -- and are open to be viewed by anyone.

In one instance, instead of remov-

ing the video, which shows the terrorist shooting and murdering innocent civilians from a first-person perspective, Facebook has simply marked the clip as potentially containing “violent or graphic content”.

One of the clips shows the terrorist walking up to the first mosque he targeted, and opening fire. The video does not show the full attack, and stops at the 01:15 mark.

A Facebook spokesperson, however, said “the video did violate our policies and has been removed”.

The Facebook livestreaming of the New Zealand terror attack sparked global outrage. The video was viewed over 4,000 times before it was removed.

The video was later shared in millions on other social media platforms, including Twitter and YouTube.

Facing flak, the social media giant is now exploring restrictions on who can use its “Facebook Live” feature.

Earlier this month, New Zealand’s privacy commissioner John Edwards labelled Facebook as “morally bankrupt pathological liars” after the social media platform’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg tried to play down the Facebook livestreaming of Christchurch shooting.

“The procedures taken to expel Polanski were fair and reasonable. The Academy stands behind its decision as appropriate,” a spokesperson said, reports variety.com.

The Academy’s statement comes after Polanski filed a suit against the nonprofit this week, demanding reinstatement after he was ousted last May. The suit, filed in the state of California, said the Academy did not follow proper protocol in dismissing him nearly a year ago.

Serendipity Arts Festival announces 2019 curators

he curatorial panel for the fourth edition of the Serendipity Arts Festival, an eightday multidisciplinary arts event held in the Goan capital of Panaji, has been announced and includes leading names from various arts disciplines.

The annual arts festival will include disciplines like music, dance, theatre, culinary arts, visual arts, craft and photography.

Each discipline will be curated by two curators.

For music, the curators are Aneesh Pradhan, a leading tabla player, and Sneha Khanwalkar, a music director best known for her music in the film series Gangs of Wasseypur.

In the field of dance, Leela Samson, a renowned Bharatnatyam dancer and former chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (2011-2015), and choreographer-dancer Mayuri Upadhya will curate projects.

As per the organisers, Mumbai-based actor and director Atul Kumar, and film and theatre actress Arundhati Nag will handle curation for theatre.

For culinary arts, res-

taurant mogul and chef Rahul Akerkar and Goabased Prahlad Sukhtankar are curating for the festival.

For photography, noted curator Rahaab Allana and photographer-environmental campaigner Ravi Agarwal have been named.

Visual arts will have contemporary Indian artist Sudarshan Shetty and art-cultural historian and museologist Jyotindra Jain as curators.

Curator Pramod K.G., who has recently curated the first-ever exhibition of a collection of Hyderabad Nizams' stamps, has been roped in for craft. The second craft curator is yet

to be confirmed.

Additionally, the festival will host special projects curated by HH Art Spaces, St+art India Foundation, Vishal K. Dar, Vidya Shivadas and Nancy Adajania, among others.

"We are looking forward to hosting a more immersive, experimental and inclusive festival in 2019, and we'll stress on the enhancement of the festival's qualitative aspect," Serendipity Arts Festival Director Smriti Rajgarhia told IANS. The first of the three specials is “Homecoming”, the behind-the-scenes documentary chronicling her 2018 Coachella performance - a massive spectacle of dance,

visuals and music that reaffirmed Beyonce’s moniker of Queen Bey - which premiered on April 17. The price tag on this installment, for which Beyonce is credited as executive producer, writer and director, hovers around $20 million, sources told variety.com. However, a source at the company disputed the

financial terms of the deal.

According to Vulture, HBO was also interested in the project, having had a long relationship with Beyonce (the cable network aired her 2016 “Lemonade” film as well as her 2014 “On the Run Tour” concert special with husband Jay-Z and 2013 documentary “Life Is But

hoto-messaging app Snapchat is working out ways to spread awareness about bullying on its platform by launching its first ever social impact-based Lens Challenge.

The new Lens, that would prompt the 186 million Snapchatters to describe a time when someone had a positive impact on their lives, comes as part of Snapchat’s extended “Because of You” campaign that was launched last October.

“Tap the ‘Because of You’ Lens Challenge to share a time someone positively impacted his or her life using the special Lens, then send the Snap to the ‘Because of You’ Challenge Story for the chance to be featured in the app,” web portal The Drum reported on Friday. Snapchat lets users report bullying or offensive content on its platform by pressing and holding on the Snap, and then tapping the flag button.

Supporting “Bullying Prevention Month” last October, Snapchat created filters, stickers and Snap Ads against bullying in partnership with US-based nonprofit organisation -- The Advertising Council also called the Ad Council.

Milan, Apr 20 (Agencies): Cristiano Ronaldo is committed to Juventus next season despite his bitter disappointment at the Italian giants’ Champions League flop, coach Massimiliano Allegri revealed on Friday.

Allegri’s injury-hit side host Fiorentina on Saturday needing just a point to lift their eighth straight Serie A title, days after a shock home 2-1 defeat to Ajax that saw them eliminated 3-2 on aggregate.

They reached 166/5 with two balls to spare. With the win, DC now have 12 points from 10 games and have moved one step closer to qualifying for the play-offs.

Chasing 164 for victory, Delhi Capitals didn’t start in the most auspicious fashion as they lost Prithvi Shaw for just 13 in the fourth over. But Shikhar Dhawan was in the mood for a long stay as he looked to take the

A press release by chairman of Badminton Association Ahthibung stated that the wall of the only indoor stadium located at the heart of Ahthibung

town had collapsed unable to withstand the strong wind.

However, no one was inside the stadium at the time of the storm.

The chair man has appealed to the concern authority to look into the matter at the earliest for the welfare of the inhabitants of Ahthibung town.

New Delhi, Apr 20 (PTI): India cricketers Hardik Pandya and K L Rahul were on Saturday fined Rs 20 lakh each by the BCCI Ombudsman D K Jain for their sexist comments on a popular TV show.

In the order published on the official BCCI website, Jain wrote that no further action will be taken against Pandya and Rahul, who have already served a provisional suspension and tendered an unconditional apology for their loose comments on women.

Instead, he directed the World Cup bound players to play a fine of Rs 20 lakh each that included a payment of Rs 1 lakh each to “each of the most deserving widows of ten constables in para-military forces who

have lost their lives while on duty, through ‘Bharat Ke Veer App”.

Jain also instructed them to deposit Rs 10 lakh each in the fund “created by the Cricket Association for the blind”. All payments are to be made within four weeks from the date of the order -- April 19, 2019.

The Supreme Courtappointed Ombudsman had issued notices to Pandya and Rahul earlier this month to appear for deposition for their controversial comments on‘Koffee with Karan’.

Pandya and Rahul were provisionally suspended by the Committee of Administrators (COA) for their remarks before the suspension was lifted pending an inquiry by the Ombuds-

man.

Both players became subjects of nationwide criticism following their remarks on women.

The controversial episode was aired in the first week of January, triggering outrage, which prompted the COA to call the duo back from the tour of Australia, handing them provisional suspensions.

The two tendered unconditional apologies and their ban was provisionally lifted pending inquiry. Once Jain assumed his role, the COA handed over the matter to Ombudsman for the completion of inquiry.

The two players have also spoken publicly on the incident, recalling one of the toughest phases of their respective careers.

L o n d o n, A p r 2 0 (Agencies): Brazilian tennis player Joao Souza has been provisionally suspended again, amid a corruption investigation by the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU).

Souza had already been provisionally suspended on March 29 but was reinstated on April 8 following a successful appeal.

The TIU says that the provisional suspension has been put back in place “following consideration of additional evidence submitted by the TIU,” adding that no more appeals will be accepted.

No further details were given for the reason of the suspension.
