Cab may take call on paper trail machines for EC today
Officials to be punished for delay in trains: Prabhu
NEW DELHI, APR 18 (PTI): The Union Cabinet is likely to take a call on Wednesday on procuring paper trail machines for the Election Commission which wants to use them in all polling stations in the next Lok Sabha elections. The item ‘procurement of VVPAT units’ has been listed on the agenda of the Union Cabinet scheduled to meet tomorrow morning. But it is still not clear whether the Cabinet would clear the entire Rs 3,174 crore needed for over 16 lakh paper trail machines to cover all polling stations in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections or go for instalments. For EVMs, the Cabinet has so far cleared two tranches of Rs 1,009 crore and Rs 9,200 for the Commission to buy new voting machines.
M. Venkaiah Naidu (File)
Since June 2014, the Commission has given at least 11 reminders to the government seeking funds for VVPAT machines. Last year, Zaidi had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi drawing his attention to the funds needed for the machines. The Supreme Court has asked the Commission to give a tentative timeframe by which it can use VVPAT machines in all polling stations. The EC says two PSUs -- ECIL and BEL -- need 30 months to produce the over 16 lakh VVPATs. The BSP, the AAP and the Congress had attacked the EC for allegedly using “tampered” EVMs. Sixteen parties, not including the AAP, had recently petitioned the EC to revert to paper ballot system for greater transparency.
NEW DELHI, APR 18 (AGENCIES): With a number of complaints being received over late running of trains, railway minister Suresh Prabhu has cracked the whip on officials concerned, asking them to improve punctuality rate or “face action”. Zonal heads have been asked to deploy a senior-level officer in the night shift between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. immediately to monitor the situation and address the problems, if any, to prevent delay. Prabhu also took note of discrepancies between train timings data available on National Train Enquiry System, official website of Indian Railways, and actual train timings experienced by passengers. In a letter to the officials, he sought immediate corrective measures to obviate the problems.
ANPSTA demands filling of 532 posts of PTs DIMAPUR, APR 18 (NPN): All Nagaland PreService Teacher Association (ANPSTA) has served a 30-day deadline on the State government demanding that the 532 vacant posts of primary teachers (PTs) should be filled up by the qualified candidates, who have cleared the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) conducted by the government in 2013 and 2016. According to ANPSTA president Obed Yhobu, minister of school education while replying to a question raised by BJP MLA during the NLA session on March 24, 2017 had categorically stated that there are 532 primary teacher posts lying vacant in the state. Serving the representation to minister of school education, commissioner and secretary and director school education, the association cautioned that in the event the demand was not met within the given

timeline, they would approach the court for appropriate action. ANPSTA said that TET examinations was conducted in 2013 and 2016 under the modalities and norms that “all appointments of teachers whether it is against resulting vacancies or new post creation shall be filled only by those who have qualified TET based on merit are eligible for appointment to the post of teachers in schools without going through any other written examinations in the State, except oral interview.” However, after clearing TET, the qualified candidates were not called for interview and their fervent appeals to conduct recruitment were also ignored by the government. ANPSTA also condemned the school education notification of June 5, 2013 which stated, “2. Posts falling vacant due to retirement, death, resignation, termination etc with effect
from 1st may 2013 will be freezed. Such posts will be transferred to the deficit schools till such time the required pupil teacher ratio (PTR) of 25:1) is attained in all schools in Nagaland. 5. Recruitment of Teachers will be made through the Teacher Eligibility Test.” The association said that freezing of such appointments for almost four years have resulted in the denial of education to many children within the state. It reminded the government that its primary function was to provide education, and that “freezing of appointment of teachers is illegal, arbitrary and capricious infringing upon the sacrosanct fundamental rights as well as other constitutional rights guaranteed by the Constitution of India”. In the light of the above, the ANPSTA urged State government to fill up the vacant posts with TET qualified candidates.

M. Venkaiah Naidu presenting certificate and cheque to a beneficiary, in Guwahati. Guwahati, Apr 18 (PTI): Union minister M Venkaiah Naidu Tuesday urged the people to use Hindi in their day-to-day life along with the regional languages. “The Centre is using more and more Hindi in government programmes and policies and we have to make the habit of using the Rashtrabhasha in our day-to-day life, along with the regional languages,” the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister said while presiding over a meeting of the Joint Hindi Advisory Committee here. “Rashtrabhasha Hindi is an important tool and language for the devel-
opment of the nation,” Naidu, also the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, added. Emotions could be easily and effectively shared with others in the mother tongue as well as in Hindi, he said. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who was also present at the review meeting, urged everyone to try and learn Hindi and use it more. He thanked the Union minister for organising the meeting of the Joint Hindi Advisory Committee in Guwahati. Members of the Joint Hindi Advisory Committee of various
states, including secretaries and senior officers of both the ministries - Information and Broadcasting and Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation - were present at the meeting. The committee undertook a review of use of Hindi as per the provisions of the Official Language Policy of 1963. Naidu described the role of the public broadcaster as “critical” in spreading the “development story” of the government, especially the programmes and policies specific to the northeastern region. He said it was essential to develop programmes in local dialects and languages in order to reach out to diverse sections and added that currently, the All India Radio broadcasts in 28 dialects of the north-east.
‘PM taking NE on a high growth trajectory’

Tripura CPM holds protest rallies Open to enter against BJP state president into alliance with
AGARTALA, Apr 18 (Agencies): A statement by state BJP president Biplab Deb regarding EVMs has led to widespread furore across the political spectrum. “The BJP state chief in a public rally on April 12 at Teliamura announced that it would form the government in Tripura the way it did in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Next year, he said, in the Tripura election, no matter which party people cast votes for, it would register in the accounts of BJP candidates. Even Manik Sarkar’s vote will be recorded in BJP’s favour,” said CPM secretary Bijan Dhar. The party held protest rallies across the state on Monday, demanding appropriate steps against Deb, which, it said, amounts to a threat of EVM manipulation. Protesters also demanded the inclusion of voter-verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) in EVMs for voters to be able to confirm that they have indeed pushed the correct button for the candidate of their choice. neutrality and fairness of EVMs being voiced across the country, such outrageous statements destroy the foundations of the Election Commission’s declared objective of conducting free and fair election,” Yechury said. Trinamool Congress also rallied behind the cause. “Deb’s statement actually goes in favour of Mayawati, who is fighting in Supreme Court on the matter,” said Trinamool president Ashis Saha, adding that it is an irresponsible comment on the part of a party president when the Election Commission (EC) has given an open challenge for anyone to prove that EVMs can be tampered with. On similar lines, Congress president Birajit Sinha said Deb admitted the concern of the scope of manipulation in EVMs, adding that veteran Congress leader P Chidambaram has also submitted in the apex court seeking that the EC add a provision of paper trail. Later, 14 non-BJP parties met the EC, demanding VVPAT or to start voting by paper ballot to remove all confusion, Sinha said, adding that another veteran Congress leader and lawyer Kapil Sibal has made it clear in the Supreme Court that all developed countries have shifted voting from EVMs to paper ballot.

NEDA: UDP
SHILLONG, Apr 18 (PTI): The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Monday said that they are open to enter into alliance with the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) in Meghalaya since both the parties share common agendas of corruption and development. The UDP had openly supported the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance last year after the BJP was voted to power in Assam. Since then, the party has formed governments in Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. “There are similarities in issues that the UDP and the BJP share. Both are against corruption and fight for development and hence open to an alliance,” UDP chief Donkupar Roy said here. “We are open to an alliance with like-minded parties since last year and but there have been no fruitful talks till date,” Roya said. “There should be common agenda in an alliance. We will welcome the grand alliance of the NEDA. Talks are on and we are waiting response from other regional parties,” he said. In the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly, the UDP has eight legislators.

IMPHAL, Apr 18: Suspected militants armed with automatic guns opened fire opened fire at Imphal-bound oil tankers on Tuesday morning around 5:45 am in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district. The attack caused no casualty, police said. The CRPF personnel escorting the oil tankers retaliated the firing, resulting in a brief exchange of fire. However, the suspects escaped before police reinforcement from Kangpokpi district headquarters reached the spot. Two tankers carrying petrol and diesel were hit by the militants’ bullets. None of the militant group actively operating in the area has so far owned up the ambush. However, police suspect an extortion threat to the oil transporters behind the attack. The attack on the oil tankers came up at a time when the new BJP led government is taking up steps to protect vehicles plying on the national highways, particularly on NH-2. In a recent meeting with representatives of private transporters, chief minister N Biren Singh had appealed them to take
NH-2 in shipping goods while assuring security protection. While assuring deployment of state security personnel (Manipur Rifles and IRB) on the stretch of the highway from Mao to Imphal, the chief minister had informed the transporters that Centre had agreed to set up four battalions of IRB as Highway Protection Force. Singh had also informed that he was going to sign an agreement with his counterpart Nagaland chief minister for safe passage Manipur vehicles in the state. However, All Naga Students’ Association Manipur (ANSAM) is strongly objecting to the state government’s move to deploy security forces on the highways in Naga dominated areas, alleging the move as “militarization”. Meanwhile, a highly reliable source said that the state government has decided to beef up security on the stretch of the highway by deploying IRB and police commando personnel. The decision was taken after chief minister N Biren Singh reviewed the security on the highways with his cabinet ministers following the attack on oil tankers.

Govt working on Mallya’s extradition
New delhi, Apr 18 (IANS): After liquor baron Vijay Mallya, wanted in India for defaulting on bank loans of over Rs 9,000 crore, was arrested and granted bail in London on Tuesday, the Indian government said the legal process for his extradition is underway in Britain. Responding to a query, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay said Mallya’s arrest in London was in connection with the request by India to British authorities for his extradition “Legal process in this regard is underway in the UK,” Baglay said. “The two governments are in touch in this context.” Metropolitan Police said Mallya, 61, was taken into custody after attending a central London police station. The Westminster Magistrates’ Court later gave him bail on a 650,000-pound bond. The next hearing of the case will be on May 17. A Metropolitan Police statement said officers from the Extradition Unit arrested Mallya on an extradition warrant from India. “Mallya was arrested on behalf of the Indian authorities in relation to accusations of fraud,” the statement said. ropolitan police’s extradition unit have this morning arrested a man on an extraction warrant. He was arrested at about 3 pm IST. The Metropolitan Police said Mallya was arrested after attending a central London police station. He was produced at the Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London and was later seen walking out with his legal team a few hours later after being granted bail. “It was a voluntary action. He will be out in a few minutes,” a member of Mallya’s team was quoted as saying by the news agency PTI. Soon after getting bail from the Westminster Magistrates’ court, Mallya took a swing at the media accusing them of ‘hyping’ the development. “Usual Indian media hype. Extradition hearing in Court started today as expected,” Mallya tweeted. India had made an extradition request in February to Britain to deport absconding businessman to face trial. Mallya had fled from India on March 2, 2016. Last month, Britain cleared India’s request to extradite Mallya to India after special request from the Ministry of External Affairs, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and his ministry. “Vijay Mallya will be
brought back to India, due process of law will be followed,” BJP leader and MoS Finance Santosh Gangwar said. Meanwhile, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that India had put up “a strong case against Vijay Mallya in England.” Former CBI Director Anil Sinha said the arrest of Vijay Mallya was a “success” of law enforcement agencies and that efforts to bring him back would “fructify”. He also said the arrest signifies the strong resolve of law enforcement agencies and the government. “After relentless campaign by Congress, finally extradition request was submitted by government in February,” Senior Congress leader Randeep Surjewala told news agency ANI. “...but within one hour, Vijay Mallya got bail. So, the government should stop misleading the people of India,” Surjewala added. Mallya is branded a willful defaulter by United Bank of India. He is facing legal proceedings for defaulting on loans of over Rs 9,000 crore and being tried for cheque bounce. In November, 2015, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley claimed that the total amount owed by Kingfisher owner is Rs 9,091.40 crore. And interestingly Mallya use to takes a salary of Rs 33.46 crore from now defunct Kingfisher Airlines.
Govt redressed 99% of 11.92 lakh complaints: DoPT NEW DELHI, Apr 18 (agencies): The central government has said that it redressed 99% of citizens’ grievances in 2016, even as the number of complaints grew 35% over the previous year to the highest ever. In contrast, the state governments managed to dispose of just 15% complaints, the Department of Personnel and Training said in its annual report for 2016-17. The report said that the Centre received a record 11.92 lakh complaints against its departments in 2016 while another 2.86 lakh grievances pertaining to state governments were sent to the states for redressal. The Centre is now planning to adopt ‘Twitter Sewa’ facility to monitor grievances on social media too, the report said. In 2014, when the Modi government took office in May, the Centre had received just 2.7 lakh complaints against its departments. Officials attributed the spike in the number of complaints subsequently to faster disposal by the Modi government and its efforts to enhance awareness among citizens in this regard. The Centre disposed of 11.82 lakh complaints in 2016-17, with the four departments topping the charts including the telecom department, financial services (banking division), railways and the human resource development ministry.
Oram calls Mamata, Naveen ‘sinners’ of chit fund scam Bhubaneswar, Apr 18 (IANS): Senior BJP leader and Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram on Tuesday said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Baner jee and her Odisha counterpart Naveen Patnaik have an “unholy nexus” and dubbed both as “sinners” of the multi-crore-rupee chit fund scam. O r a m ’s s t a t e m e n t came ahead of the threeday visit of Banerjee, also the Trinamool Congress chief, to Odisha on Tuesday. “ N ave e n P a t n a i k and Mamata Banerjee are equally sad following the arrest of their leaders in the chit fund scams. So, they are meeting repeatedly to share their sorrows. Perhaps, both may enter into an alliance,” said Oram. The minister said they were meeting frequently to console each other and evolve ways and means to counter the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Some of their chit fund-tainted leaders were either in jail or on bail. “Their leaders, cine-stars and party workers have duped the people. They would be punished for their sin,” he added. Reacting to the meeting of the two leaders for a possible alliance to counter the BJP at the national lev-
Jual Oram el, Oram said: “Hundred lame persons can’t take on a strong fighter.” Recently, both Chief Ministers had met in New Delhi. Banerjee is likely to meet Patnaik during her Odisha visit. H owe ve r, O d i s h a Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday said there was no plan yet to meet his West Bengal counterpart. On the allegation of BJP dubbing the frequent meetings as an “unholy nexus”, Patnaik said: “That’s absolutely false and baseless.” Banerjee, scheduled to arrive in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday evening, will visit Puri to have darshan of Lord Jagannath on Wednesday morning. She will also meet the arrested party MPs in hospital. Trinamool MPs Sudip Bandyopadhyay and Tapas Pal, who were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation for their alleged links with the Rose Valley chit fund scam, are in hospital, said sources.
Check train delays or face action: Prabhu NEW DELHI, APR 18 (AGENCIES): With a number of complaints being received over late running of trains, railway minister Suresh Prabhu has cracked the whip on officials concerned, asking them to improve punctuality rate or “face action”. Zonal heads have been asked to deploy a seniorlevel officer in the night shift between 10 PM and 7 AM immediately to monitor the situation and address the problems, if any, to prevent delay in train running. Besides, Prabhu has also taken note of discrepancies between train timings data available on national train enquiry system (NTES), the official website of Indian Railways, and actual train timings being experienced by passengers. The punctuality rate has deteriorated further to 79 per cent during April 1-16 period, as compared to 84 per cent in the corresponding period last year, a decrease of 4 per cent. Analysis of performance of zonal railways reveals that punctuality has registered a sharp drop over Eastern Railway (-8.9 per cent), North Eastern Railway (-11 per cent), East Central Railway (-10 per cent), South East Central Railway (- 11 per cent), West Central Railway (-8 per cent) and Konkan Railway (-6.9 per cent).

of every citizen of India” (a) to abide by the Constitution and respect its ideals and institutions, the National Flag and the National Anthem”. Even as a bench of Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice Mohan M. Shantanagoudar sought the government’s response, it modified its earlier November 30, 2016, order to exempt a certain category of
physically disabled people from standing up when the national anthem is played in cinema halls as per its directions. The court had then ordered that the National Anthem would be played in cinema halls across the country before the start of a movie. This, it said, would instil a feeling of “constitutional patriotism” and a sense of “committed patriotism and nationalism”.

India cautions Nepal on getting aid from China ADMISSION GOING ON NEW DELHI, APR 18 (AGENCIES): In an apparent reference to China, India on Tuesday cautioned Nepal not to depend upon nations that provide assistance on their own terms and do not encourage capacity building. Addressing a conference along with Nepal’s President Bidya Devi Bhandari, Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh said India’s model of aid is different as it does not making anyone dependent. “Let me tell you, there are countries in this world who follow a different model where they would like to identify projects which will showcase them not you. “They would like to give you assistance which is termed in very expendable terms and they would like to run those projects themselves, so that you do not become capable of running those projects,” Singh said at the conference organised by industry chambers CII, Ficci and Assocham. Questionable practices
V
arious revelations on the questionable and highly irregular practices in the police department brought out in public domain by various organisations in recent times, do point to a very serious issue of compromise on the safety and security aspects of the state and its people. Besides the unaccounted and inconclusive probe into theft of arms and ammunition from armouries, diversion of funds purposes other than modernisation of the force, alleged fictitious names in the rolls; the backdoor appointments of over 7000 candidates during the past few years drove the last nail on the coffin. All these seem to suggest that the police department in the state has gone beyond redemption. Whether the terms excess appointment or backdoor appointment, are used; there cannot be any dichotomy on the fact that there has been a total breakdown of rules and ethics in the police department. No wonder that today the police department instead of effectively tackling crimes is committing them. If there has been excess of appointments then it stands to reason that some officers had broken the rules and got away; when they, as law enforcement agents, are suppose to know what is rule. Even in matters of backdoor appointments, where 7737 were appointed from 2005 to 2010 in a span of five years; nothing was done to check it when the matter surfaced during the period which was exposed by the opposition. Whether excess or backdoor appointments, nothing changes and these will continue and no one has the guts to stop it. Due to such dubious appointments, the Police department has achieved the distinction of having the highest ratio of police to population with 1:50 as against the national average of 1:500. Be it the opposition, student unions, ACAUT or even a senior police officer on the issue of appointments in the police department; these all point to another very distressing fact, that the department can no longer be expected to tackle crimes since its hands are tied to various vested interests. The newly formed Nagaland Congress has brought out a revelation that a high percentage -15%- of recruits were nonlocals from other states and that the number of under matric recruits among 7005 recruited during January 2009 to December 3,2015 constable, ASI and SI was a staggering 71%. There were only 0.91% recruits with MA or equivalent qualification, 9% having BA or equivalent qualification and 20% who were class X or above. When thousands get jobs through backdoor and patronage of politicians, bureaucrats and police officers, it is only expected that they would be loyal to their patrons and not to the force. Despite so many reports appearing in this newspaper and the government’s assurance to crack down on it, the inaction, whether implicit in complicity among the higher echelons of the government, has only helped perpetrate favouritism and nepotism. In Nagaland, the DGP or unit commanders recruit Constable, Lance Naik, Head Constables upto Unarmed Branch Sub Inspectors. Government bureaucrats in league with politicians select Inspectors through the backdoor appointment system which thrives since it serves the interests of the VIPs. The reason why people have lost confidence in their police is clear because thugs and goons are exerting their influence. What happens when police is itself infested is criminalisation of society.
DailyDevotion Readiness
God called to him….And he said, “Here I am.” —Exodus 3:4 When God speaks, many of us are like people in a fog, and we give no answer. Moses’ reply to God revealed that he knew where he was and that he was ready. Readiness means having a right relationship to God and having the knowledge of where we are. We are so busy telling God where we would like to go. Yet the man or woman who is ready for God and His work is the one who receives the prize when the summons comes. We wait with the idea that some great opportunity or something sensational will be coming our way, and when it does come we are quick to cry out, “Here I am.” Whenever we sense that Jesus Christ is rising up to take authority over some great task, we are there, but we are not ready for some obscure duty. Readiness for God means that we are prepared to do the smallest thing or the largest thing— it makes no difference. It means we have no choice in what we want to do, but that whatever God’s plans may be, we are there and ready. Whenever any duty presents itself, we hear God’s voice as our Lord heard His Father’s voice, and we are ready for it with the total readiness of our love for Him. Jesus Christ expects to do with us just as His Father did with Him. He can put us wherever He wants, in pleasant duties or in menial ones, because our union with Him is the same as His union with the Father. “…that they may be one just as We are one…” (John 17:22). Be ready for the sudden surprise visits of God. A ready person never needs to get ready— he is ready. Think of the time we waste trying to get ready once God has called! The burning bush is a symbol of everything that surrounds the person who is ready, and it is on fire with the presence of God Himself.

Post-mortem
Nagaland is the target of RSS P T rior to 2014, it was unthinkable to imagine allowing RSS to establish its foothold in Nagaland known as the land for Christ Jesus. But by 2018 it is possible and even fertile for Hinduism to establish its roots in the land of Christians while the Christians in Nagaland are boasting about 95% of Christian population as though no such intrusion can ever happen to them. Before I give my assessment on the impending danger poised against Christian faith in our own land by forces of Hinduism, let me once again highlight the differences between Christianity and Hinduism. The most principle difference is Christians do worship God Jehovah, the Creator of the universe, whereas the Hindus worship His creations. Hinduism has hundreds of gods, major and minor gods and male and female gods. May be to please all those gods and goddesses, the Hindus are divided into four major groups under caste system, namely Brahmans, Kshatriyas,Vaishyas and Shudras. The caste system is a rigid social stratification characterized by hereditary status that restricts the occupation of their members and their association with the members of other castes. Thus, the social and religious status so set by caste remains sacrosanct and hereditary. The caste system is the epitome of inequality, suppression and subjugation. The Hindus believe superior and inferior birth loaded with superior and inferior complexes. No matter how potential a person may be, if he or she hails from lower caste, he/she will not be allowed to rise above higher caste people. The perfect instance was lt. Dr. Ambedkar who drafted the lengthy Indian Constitution. At that time, perhaps he was found to be the fittest and the most capable of all to shoulder the massive task of drafting the voluminous Constitution of India, and he accomplished the assignment successfully. Despite of his historical contribution to India, his status had to remain static as he belonged to lower caste called Dalit. Perhaps he became frustrated with Hinduism and therefore he left his original religion and converted to Buddhism before his death. In Hinduism, the cow stands above the status of Dalits. The Brahmins consider cow to be sacred and more valuable than the Dalits, and we Christians are placed in the same category. The campaign for cow preservation under BJP Govt. and particularly in BJP r uled States has been intensified. The PM Modi’s State Gujarat has passed the toughest law with non-bail able, fine up to Rs.5 lakh and life imprisonment for those who butcher cow. The Chhattisgarh Chief Minister (BJP) Raman Singh declared that whoever butchers cow will be hanged. The Dalits, the Muslims and the Christians are no match to cow in the sight of higher caste Hindus. Hinduism is a merciless religion and a religion of intolerance. The few instances are: The Eastern Mirror published on 15.1.2015 how 104 dead bodies were thrown in the tributary of Ganges in Unnao District, UP. The matter was investigated by Kanpur Inspector General of Police Sri. Ashutosh Pandey who said that the bodies belonged to the families who could not afford a decent cremation as per Hindu rites and therefore dumped there in the river. Not long ago, in central India, the bereaved husband had to all alone carry the dead body of his wife from hospital to his village of 10 km distance as he was refused by the hospital authority to spare the vehicle which was available for transportation. The mere reason
being the bereaved husband was a Dalit. Another Dalit bereaved husband had to collect burnable wastes from dustbin in Odisha State in order to cremate his wife. A kind hearted Police officer found him and donated Rs.2500 for the crematorium fee lest he had only Rs.250. Mahatma Gandhi was murdered by RSS because of preaching for removal of un-touchability. This is how the upper caste Hindus treat fellow Indians belonging to Dalit, Christianity and Muslim. Whereas, on the complete contrary, Christianity is all about love. Out of sheer love of God Jehovah, the Creator of the universe, sent His only Son Jesus Christ to be crucified for humanity. Jesus Christ taught his believers to love one’s enemies and pray for those who persecute the Christians. See Mathew 5:44,45. The Christians are taught not to curse those who persecute the Christians but to bless them as found in Romans 12:14. Christians are taught to share food and drink with those Hindus who persecute us as found in Proverbs 25:21. Therefore, there is no comparison and no compatibility between Christianity and Hinduism just as there is no relationship between love and hatred or between good and evil. The Hindus hating Christians in India is not a new development, the only difference is their hatred and actions against us have been immensely intensified since BJP came to power in India in 2014. Yet, the Christians in Nagaland had never retaliated. As Christian population in India stands at 2.3%, the Hindus in Nagaland are in hopeless minority. Nevertheless, the existing Hindu temples across Nagaland remains intact. The Hindus are free to worship their gods and goddesses and celebrate all their festivals anywhere in Nagaland without hindrance from majority Christians. This is the heap of burning coals put on the head of the Hindus as found in Proverb 25:22 as compared to destruction of Churches by BJP workers in the past and at present in several States in India. Whereas, BJP is not satisfied with the sovereignty of India. BJP is so obsessed with secular tag as Unity in Diversity to be a blot on the Hindus ownership over India. The BJP considers secularism enshrined in Indian Constitution to be a thorn in the flesh of Hinduism. The BJP will feel contented only when India is transformed into theocracy with one nation-one religion through the promulgation of Uniform Civil Code. Similarly, BJP remains dissatisfied with Nagaland being a member State of Indian Union until the Nagas abandon Christian faith and become Hindus, that Nagas convert the magnificent churches on elevated locations at every Village into Hindu temples, that Hindu idols replace the Cross of Christ on every pulpit and that trishul with Um replace the overhead crosses across Nagaland. God forbids. Therefore, the RSS in the name of BJP has been taking advantage of the hospitality of Christians in Nagaland as it is penetrating into Christian dominated State with multiprone strategies. Firstly, recently an RSS leader who has been in North East India for 20 years has boasted that children of Naga ‘extremist leaders’ (Naga national leaders) are in the Schools run by RSS. The RSS cadre had not be talked nonsense and it implies how it has tied up with national workers who may now become a stepping stone for RSS activities in Nagaland. Secondly, though reiterating, Gaidinliu’s cult Hereka mentored by at least two former CMs in Nagaland is the
permanent host of Hinduism in the land of Christians. Out of credulity it is learnt that Hereka members and satanic worshipers have same way of worship of Satan in isolated locations in nakedness at the dead of the night. We all recently read about life attempt on the leader of Praise and Worship team during the last concluded Transformation Crusade at Kohima by no other than satanic worshiper. Peren District is the practical HQ of RSS with its branch in Chen area in Mon District. Ms. Yahoi, a B.Th. read lady has planted Hereka in her area and I am sure she remains the trustworthy agent of RSS. Pertinent to add that as several Theological colleges have sprouted in Nagaland producing sizeable theologians annually, whether some of the colleges tend to be too commercial than spiritual is the concern. Lest care and scrutiny over the credentials is there from competent authorities, more Yahois will be produced and in such case the Churches will face threat of division and heresy not from layman but from theologians. Thirdly, wherever the animism remnants are there, BJP is wooing them as though animism and Hinduism are one. The Governor BP Acharya is found taking much initiative in this venture. The fourth and most impending danger is the alliance of NPF and BJP by which RSS has free hand to establish its roots in Nagaland. Quoting from Nagaland Page’s report dated 28.3.2017 ‘The BJP’s alliance with NPF..... too contributed to BJP’s victory’ in Manipur. And we all know what BJP is. The BJP is the political wing of Hinduism run mainly by RSS, VHP and Bajrang Dal. Unlike other registered political parties of both regional and national in India, BJP has dual role to play- to further the interest of Hinduism under the garb political ambition. BJP therefore functions at the dictate of its sponsor RSS. Meanwhile, BJP is the old bosom political partner of NPF and therefore the latter will not mind to allow the former to establish its kingdom in the land which stands for Christ. There can be no argument as regard to intensifying of RSS activities in Nagaland under the parentage of NPF. However, BJP-NPF alliance seems to be similar to stork-jackal friendship in Aesop’s story. Taking just a cue from Assembly’s report, NPF’s demigod BJP did not give anything under PMGSY for 2016-17 to Nagaland. For 2017-18 under the same program only Rs.18 crore has been earmarked for Nagaland as against Rs.237 crore for Sikkim which has 32 MLAs and Rs.292 crore for Manipur. The peanut allocation is a serious insult to the people of Nagaland and yet NPF is ready to remain at the back and call of PM Modi. Whether Nagas are treated honourably and with due regard by BJP Govt. in Delhi or not should be the contentious issue. On the contrary, power worship has become Naga way of life. RSS knows how fragile and cheap the Naga Christians are. A thousand crore of rupees is chicken feed as for RSS to purchase the Naga Christians during the coming Assembly election in 2018. The Sunday gathering of members in Churches will not be able to resist the lure of money. The BJP-NPF alliance is rich enough to buy Nagaland oversight so as to erase the ‘Motto’ of NNC ‘Nagaland for Christ’ which was declared 70 years ago and not 57 years ago as someone recently claimed. May God answer the prayers of true believers so that Nagaland is not renamed as Naga Pradesh. Z. Lohe
IInd Part -can people of ouside decide for the state of Nagaland?
he answer to who is from Nagaland State Territory and who is not is a serious Political Matter than just a simple question. This decides who and who do not for Nagaland. In political Matters it is only the Citizens of the territory that decides the political matter of the Territory and not by others. A Naga Village has no say in the affairs of another Village. One Naga Tribe has no say in the affairs of another Tribe. Arunachal has no say in political affairs of Assam and Manipur cannot decide for Nagaland or vice versa. In political matters, it is the State itself who decides and no other. The Naga Hills formed the Naga National Council (NNC in 1946) based on the democratic Principle of Non-Violence for the Pan Naga Tribes of the Northeast India and of Burma. Initially Tuensang-Mon Area was not in Naga Hills, it was in the Northeast Frontier Agency, and the NNC can not decide for the Area. Mr. Phizo met the Leaders of Tuensang Area and persuaded them to join the NNC. Mr. Thongdi Chang brought the Tuensang Area to NNC and together formed the Federal Goverment of Nagaland. The Konyaks did not initially join the NNC, they decided for themselves in matters of Politics. NNC sent Mr. Imnaonen the General Secretary as its Envoy to the Konyaks. 9 Principal Konyak Anghs and Escorts of about 40 with muzzle loading Guns discussed the matter through Thanwang of Tamlu, the first educated Konyak in early 1950s. Finally after 4 days of intense discussion in the Ponkong Jungles, the Angh of Mon as the representative of the Konyaks, with Konyak ceremonial Daoh and great force cut the sharp edge of another similar ceremonial daoh the General Secretary was made to hold. Dents were made at the cutting edges of both the Daohs and Mon Angh solemnly declared “until the Dents in the Daohs disappear, the Konyaks will be land Animal if the NNC is land Animal, and if the NNC is Water Animal, the Konyaks will be Water Animal”. Mr. Khaplang, the principal Leader of the Naga of Burma said sometime ago that NNC and the Plebiscite was for Nagaland only though practically Khaplang worked for the NNC until Muivah created the rival National Socialist Council of Nagaland in 1980. The NNC was for Pan Naga of the Northeast and Burma. The Organization included any Naga Community joining it democratically. The Tuesnsang-Mon Area ultimately joined the Naga National Council and the State of Nagaland in early 1950s. Muivah joined the NNC around middle 1960s and became the General Secretary of the NNC in 1965. He was democratically elected and had he remained, he would have a right in the Decision Making Body of the NNC. But Muivah fearfully and violently created a separate National Socialist Council of Nagaland –NSCN- with Barrel of the Gun in opposition to the NNC. One Naga State cannot become the common Naga Territory of all the Naga Tribes, just because the people are all Naga. Even wild animals have different territories
and one of one territory cannot stray into the other. A Family of Lion or or Tiger or a Pack of Wild Dogs do not stray into each other Territory. Muivah’s has rebelled out of NNC territory, he has no say in the political affairs of Nagaland State territory. This is political Principle of all Mankind of all the Continents of the world. Britain does not accept European Union to decide for Britain, so it has democratically separated out from the EU. France, Italy may likely follow. Nagaland does not object to any Naga from any other State coming and living in Nagaland but it would not accept other State to decide for the State Political matters. The Parliament of India even do not interfere in the Customary Traditional Practices of Nagaland. The Territorial limit of a State is very serious matter; nobody on his own has the power to integrate or disintegrate State Territories. Any Community declaring itself Naga peaceably is Naga. Muivah is Naga from Manipur and can have a say for that State bue not for Nagaland. The NSCN of Muivah claimi. all lands of Nagaland are National Land, ii. all minerals of Nagaland belongs to NSCN Government. iii. the institution he would form -Pan Naga Hoho would govern Nagaland. iv. Divided Nagaland Citizens into Permanent and Non-permanent Classes. v. Imposed Tax on the territory of Nagaland. vi. GoI has given Sovereignty power to IM to integrate all Naga Areas of the northeast into Nagalim. Shri. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India has publicly refuted Muivah’s claim as “blatant lie”! It is very uncomfortable, even shameful for the Naga to hear Statement of IM Leader described as a ‘blatant lie’ by the Prime Minister of a great Country India. Mr. RN Ravi the Interlocutor between India and the NSCN (IM), said on 25 March 2017, (quoted) “I have signed the Framework Agreement on behalf of the Government of India and I know everything in detail of it. There is nothing about touching the territorial Integrity of any State”. The Home Minister of India Rajnath Singh immediately refuted Muivah’s claim as “erroneous” Yet, General Secretary is bewitching Nagaland with false political claims and statements, his MIP instead of clarifying the ‘erroneous’ political statement and ‘blatant lies’ has made Racists and defamatory Statements challengeable in the Court. It is bewildering as to how Nagaland has so completely been bewitched by a fake Democrat, un-trustable violent person and a Man whose hand is dirty with innocent blood. Nagaland seemed to have been blinded with its own stuborn self-righteous national political arrogance. It seems to have become so dependent and defensive in its political outlook that it appears naively unbalanced. Thepfulhouvi Solo
Reader’s Post For better understanding Sir,
I am writing on the terminology used on the Persons with Disabilities (PwD) for a better understanding of the citizens referred to in your dailies. The international community has preferred the use of Persons with Disabilities (PwD). We know when a nation at war with other nation says, “we have disabled all the missile launchers of our enemies”. If Nagaland allows 29,600 citizens to remain disabled what a loss of work force, dignity, and headcounts from the small population? Moreover, the Indian Government has also rightly used this term “Persons with Disabilities” in both the Acts related to this group of citizens, 1995 and 2016. I write this for general awareness of our people as this concern about the PwD in our society is emerging only recently. Use of the term “Persons with Disabilities” implies the persons in question are persons living with some disabilities who can be potential, resourceful, if only the society engages them. Ezamo Murry

AIADMK squabbles over Sasikala amid unity efforts
K. Palaniswami, V.K. Sasikala and O. Panneerselvam
retary Sasikala and the other by Panneerselvam. According to Panneerselvam, MGR never involved his brother in party affairs when he founded the AIADMK and then ruled Tamil Nadu for a decade until his death in December 1987. He said Jayalalithaa admitted only Sasikala into the party and none from the latter’s family. The Sasikala faction hit back. Chief Minister Palaniswami said if Panneerselvam placed such conditions, then unity talks cannot proceed further. Sasikala faction legislator Vetrivel questioned how a group of ministers discussed a patch-up without the consent of party Deputy General Secretary T.T.V. Dinakaran, a nephew of Sasikala. He said in Chennai that the meeting of the ministers was “unofficial” and only those meetings held at the AIADMK office were “official”. Efforts to unite the AIADMK factions picked up speed after Delhi Police filed a case against Dinakaran for trying to bribe the Election Commission
to allot his faction the now frozen “two leaves” election symbol. The Election Commission has also postponed the by-election to the state assembly from R.K. Nagar that was set for April 12 as it found that voters were bribed with cash. Dinakaran was the ruling AIADMK’s candidate. The Panneerselvam camp reportedly wants him (Pannerselvam) to be made both the AIADMK General Secretary and Chief Minister, with Palaniswami as his deputy. Panneerselvam also said doubts concerning Jayalalithaa’s death had to be cleared. Panneerselvam became the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister after Jayaalalithaa died but was ousted by Sasikala, who named Palaniswami as Chief Minister when she was sent to jail for corruption. Both AIADMK factions are desperate for a unity because they realise they will find fighting the next civic body elections tough against the DMK in the absence of the familiar “two leaves” election symbol.
MCD polls: 116 candidates with criminal cases 1984 anti-Sikh riots case: Delhi, Apr 18 (IANS): As many as 173 candidates in the April 23 civic Court reserves order on CBI plea New elections face criminal cases while another 116 have serious cases of murder, kidnapping and crime against women pending against them, a report said on Tuesday. The
NEW DELHI, APR 18 (AGENCIES): A Delhi court on Tuesday reserved its order on CBI’s plea seeking permission to conduct a lie-detector test on Congress leader Jagdish Tytler, who has been given a clean chit by the agency in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, and arms dealer Abhishek Verma, for further probe. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Shivali Sharma fixed the matter for May 9 to pronounce the order on application after hearing the arguments of the counsel for CBI, Tytler, Verma and the riot victims. W h i l e Ty t l e r h a s refused to undergo the test, Verma, who has been made a witness in the case, has given conditional consent while seeking protection claiming threat to his life. CBI has, however, said that the consent for polygraph test should be unconditional. During the hearing, the advocates appearing for Tytler and the riot victims said the CBI should be directed to expedite the further probe in the case. Meanwhile, advocates Kamna Vohra and Prabhsahay Kaur, appearing for the victims, moved a plea seeking direction to take off the record, a compilation, some written submissions and list of events from 1984 till date, given by Tytler, saying he does not have a locus standi at this stage.
Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) said it went through the affidavits filed by 2,315 of the 2,537 candidates from 18 political parties, including six national parties, for the report. Percentage-wise, candidates with criminal cases pending against them are around seven per cent, with those with serious criminal cases nearly five per cent of the analysed figure. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has the highest number of candidates with criminal cases -- 35 of the 260 candidates, around 14 per cent of the total.
HC notice to UGC, JNU over M.Phil, Ph.D notification
Jagdish Tytler
Tytler’s lawyer countered the arguments, saying he had come to the court after being summoned by it and the victims’ plea was not maintainable. The counsel, appearing for Verma, told the judge that he was being provided security only on the days of the hearing and sought 24-hour protection as there was a ‘threat to his life’. This was supported by victims’ counsel, who said Verma was the only witness who had come forward to depose in the matter and when he was ready to undergo the polygraph test, he should be given police protection. CBI’s move seeking permission to conduct polygraph test on Tytler and Verma came in pursuance to the court’s December 4, 2015 order in which it was mentioned that the lie-detection test may be conducted, if required. The case pertains to the riots at Gurudwara Pulbangash in North Delhi where three people were killed on November 1, 1984, a day after the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
New Delhi, Apr 18 (IANS): The Delhi High Court on Tuesday issued notice to the Central government, the UGC and JNU on a plea challenging UGC notification that put a cap on number of M.Phil and Ph.D research scholars a professor can guide. A division bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice Anu Malhotra sought response from government, University Grant Commission and Jawaharlal Nehru University and posted the matter for hearing on April 28. The plea filed by the CPI-M-affiliated Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and some aspiring M.Phil and Ph.D students of JNU and Delhi University challenged the constitutional validity of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil and Ph.D degree) Regulations 2016 which came into effect from July 5, 2016. They have contended that the UGC notification “threatens to put their future in jeopardy” as they would not be able to find research supervisors/guides due to the said notification. It also challenged various provisions of the regulations including those laying down a minimum percentage requirement of 55 per cent for general category and 50 per cent for reserved category as well as the 100 per cent weightage given to viva-voce exam.
8,231 kms of NH constructed in 2016-17: Gadkari
New Delhi, Apr 18 (IANS): Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday said a record 8,231 kilometres of national highways were built during 201617. He also ordered fast-tracking of awarding and construction of national highway projects to further expedite them. Gadkari’s directions came as he reviewed various projects of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) here. The minister said that while a record 16,271 kilometres of national highways were awarded and 8,231 kilometres constructed during the last fiscal, work needs to be done at a much faster pace to award more projects and construct those that have been awarded. He also announced that the best performing project director and regional officer would be awarded for their work. In 2015-16, a total of 6,029 kilometres of national highways were constructed which was also the highest till that year.
Kashmir students clash with forces; many hurt
SRINAGAR, APR 18 (AGENCIES): Several students were injured on Monday in clashes with security forces as hundreds of them took to streets across the Kashmir valley, protesting against the police action at Pulwama Degree College last week. The protests were called by Kashmir University Students Union (KUSU), an organization banned for its separatist politics. Police on Saturday had raided the college in southern Pulwama town, leading to clashes that left several students injured. On Monday, students of Srinagar’s premier institute SP College and from the adjacent SP higher secondary school and government women’s college boycotted classes and marched in protest, disrupting traffic on Maulana Azad Road. The protests soon spread to several colleges, leading to fierce clashes between stone-pelting students and security forces.

C h e n na i , A p r 1 8 (IANS); Unity efforts in the AIADMK hit a roadblock on Tuesday after former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam sought the exit of the now jailed V.K. Sasikala and her family, and Chief Minister K. Palaniswami said this was unacceptable. A d ay a f t e r s o m e AIADMK ministers initiated unity talks with the Panneerselvam faction, the former Chief Minister made it clear that there cannot be any unification if Sasikala and her family members remained party members. Speaking in Perikulam in Theni district, about 520 km from here, Panneerselvam told the media: “Our stand is that Sasikala and her family members should not be in the party.” He pointed out that both AIADMK founder, the late M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), and his successor the late J. Jayalalithaa, who died on December 5, were against a family controlling the party. He said there was no change in his fundamental stance that the party and the government should not be under the control of one family. The AIADMK split into two after Jayalalithaa’s death. Gold prices eased by Rs 25 per 10 grams today owing to slackened demand from investors and stockists. While, silver snapped its four-day gains owing to lacklustre industrial offtake. Standard gold (99.5 purity) eased by Rs 25 to close at Rs 29,400 per 10 grams from Monday’s level of Rs 29,425. Pure gold (99.9 purity) also moved down by a similar margin to finish at Rs 29,550 per 10 grams as against Rs 29,575 earlier. However, silver (.999 fineness) fell by Rs 320 to close at Rs 42,850 per kg as compared to Rs 43,170 earlier. Globally, gold held steady after touching fivemonth highs in the previous session, bolstered by the dollar softening versus the yen, North Korea tensions and the French presidential election. Spot gold edged up 0.1 percent at USD 1,285.55 per ounce at early trade, after climbing to USD 1,295.42 in the prior session, its highest since November 9.

NEW DELHI, APR 18 (PTI): SBI Card, with over 4 million customers, has started charging Rs 100 for payment through cheque if the amount is up to Rs 2,000 and anything above will attract no fee. The fee kicks in from April 1. The credit card company, however, said there will be no additional fee for cheque payments greater than Rs 2,000. CEO of SBI Card Vijay Jasuja said that over 90 per cent of its customers make payments through non-cheque mode. “We have observed a trend of payment related disputes arising in small cheque payments, causing inconvenience to customers as well. a beneficial tax rate of 7.5% on short-term capital gains on equity for investments made after April 1, 2017. The India-France treaty on the other hand provides for a NIL tax on short-term capital gains on equity. Citi is understood to have taken a decision to refrain from using its Paris office to issue PNs and sell Indian equity. “I believe that Citi has taken a stand that this is only a temporary window and selling PNs from Paris would be against the spirit of regulation... I suppose they believe that it could be a matter of time before India reviews its tax treaty with France,” said a senior lawyer familiar with the developments. “The re-negotiated India-Mauritius and IndiaSingapore tax treaties offer

MUMBAI, Apr 18 (Agencies): Citi, once perceived as a master in regulatory arbitrage, has drawn the government’s attention to Paris emerging as a new tax haven with Mauritius losing its charm. In a recent meeting with officials of the finance ministry, Citi pointed out how some global banks and funds are taking advantage of India’s treaty with France to escape tax, sources in the financial market told ET. In the past few months, a few leading foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have set up shop in Paris to attract offshore investors and issue participatory notes (PNs) — derivatives sold to foreign investors keen to trade in Indian stocks. It said the attempt to present the Kuki tribes as “substantial numbers in police department” was another attempt to create mischief and malice intended to tarnish the image of the officer of this tribe. It said before 1990, the Kuki tribe had one of the highest numbers of officers as per population ratio in the State of Nagaland, however, the ratio drastically declined and was now as good as non-existence in spite of their ability and capability. As for the Kachari’s, Garo and Mikir/Karbi, IMTN said in spite of

IMTB also pointed out that the history of the Kachari’s tribes in Nagaland dated back to the 10th Century AD. “The reminiscence of their proofs of being the traditional land owner of Dimapur still stands today and is an irrefutable evidence of their ownership and being the ancestral landowner,” IMTN stated. That only because of the magnanimity and hospitality of the Kachari’s tribes, Dimapur had become the only true mini-Nagaland where every tribe irrespective of their origin and descent can live and settle without any hindrance and discriminations, it added. IMTN further said
Kuki tribes in Nagaland had also been one of the architects of the Naga National movement. IMTN reminded that late Lenjang Kuki was one of the signatories on the 1929 Simon Commission, where even some of the major tribes of Nagaland were missing as signatories in signing such historical document. It went on to point out that people like Mr. Haokip, who was an Interim Body member when the statehood was created in 1963, was a living example of the once as influential tribe like other tribes of Nagaland IMTN lamented that with the passage of time, the conditions and positions of some indigenous recognized tribes had fallen due to discriminations, alienations and step motherly treatment within their own ancestral land. May calls for early general election
LONDON, APR 18 (PTI): British Prime Minister Theresa May today called for snap elections on June 8 in a surprise move that stunned her allies as well as opponents, asserting that it is the only way to guarantee political stability in the country for years after the UK l e av e s t h e E u r o p e a n Union. Prime Minister May, who had repeatedly denied that she would call an election before the next scheduled poll in 2020, indicated that the early general election will help unite the political corridors of the country. There will be a House of Commons vote on the proposed election tomorrow and May will need Parliament’s backing to hold a vote before 2020. Explaining her change of heart on an early election, May said: “I have concluded the only way to guarantee certainty and security for years ahead is to hold this election”. Speaking outside her Downing Street residence in London, May, 60, accused Britain’s other political parties of “game playing”, saying this risks “our ability to make a success of Brexit and it will cause damaging uncertainty and instability to the country”.
Theresa May She said at this moment of enormous national significance there should be unity here in Westminster, but instead there is division. The country is coming together, but Westminster is not, she added. “Our opponents believe because the government’s majority is so small, that our resolve will weaken and that they can force us to change course. They are wrong. “If we do not hold a general election now their political game-playing will continue, and the negotiations with the European Union will reach their most difficult stage in the run-up to the next scheduled election,” she added. “So we need a general election and we need one now. We have at this moment a one off chance to get
this done. “I have only recently and reluctantly come to this conclusion. Since I became prime minister I’ve said there should be no election until 2020, but now I have concluded that the only way to guarantee certainty and security for the years ahead is to hold this election and seek your support for the decisions we must take,” she added. May had phoned the Queen yesterday to inform her of her intention. Her decision came after a Cabinet meeting at Downing Street wherein she decided to go for early polls this year to win a stronger mandate for her Brexit negotiations. The dramatic move comes against the backdrop of the country’s decision to leave the European Union in the last year’s referendum. Britain’s next election was due to have been held in 2020, according to a legislation but the law can be overruled if two-thirds of lawmakers in the British parliament vote in favour of early elections. The House of Commons is expected to dissolve on May 3 and a vote tomorrow requires 434 out of 650 MPs to vote for the early election for it to go ahead. May threw a challenge
Mummies discovered in Egypt LUXOR, APR 18 (AFP): Egyptian archaeologists have unearthed several mummies, colourful wooden sarcophagi and more than 1,000 funerary statues in a 3,500-year-old tomb near the city of Luxor hailed as an “important discovery”. Antiquities officials had initially said six mummies along with partial remains were discovered near the southern city, but said they had later identified two more mummies. “There are 10 coffins and eight mummies. The excavation is ongoing,” Mostafa Waziri, the head of the archaeological mission, told AFP. The 18th Dynasty tomb, discovered in the Draa Abul Nagaa necropolis near the famed Valley of the Kings, belonged to a nobleman named Userhat who worked as the city judge, the

ministry said in a Tuesday statement. It was opened to add more mummies during the 21st Dynasty, about 3,000 years ago, to protect them during a period when tombrobbing was common, said Waziri, the head of the archaeological mission, at the site. “It was a surprise how much was being displayed inside” the tomb, Antiquities Minister Khaled elEnany told reporters outside the tomb. We found a large number of Ushabti (small carved figurines), more than 1,000 of them,” Enany said. “This is an important discovery,” he said. Ushabti figurines were often placed with the deceased in ancient Egyptian tombs to help with responsibilities in the afterlife. Inside the tomb, archaeologists wearing white
masks and latex gloves inspected the sarcophagi, which were covered with intricate drawings in red, blue, black, green, and yellow, and featured the carved faces of the dead. The coffins were mainly well-preserved, though some had deteriorated and broken over the years. Archeologists were also e x a m i n i n g a m u m my wrapped in linen which was inside one of the coffins. White, orange, green, and patterned pots were also found in the tombs. “It is a T-shaped tomb (which) consists of an open court leading into a rectangular hall, a corridor and an inner chamber,” the ministry said in a statement. A nine-metre shaft inside the tomb held the Ushabti figurines, as well as “wooden masks and a handle of a sarcophagus lid,” the ministry said.
to the Opposition to back her motion to be tabled tomorrow. “I have a simple challenge to the Opposition parties, you have criticised the government’s vision for Brexit, you have challenged our objectives, you have threatened to block the legislation we put before Parliament. This is your moment to show you mean it, to show you are not opposing the government for the sake of it, to show that you do not treat politics as a game,” she said. Jeremy Corbyn, Leader of the Opposition, welcomed May’s decision to hold the snap election. “Labour will stand up for the people of Britain. I welcome the Prime Minister’s decision to give the British people the chance to vote for a government that will put the interests of the majority first,” he said. “Labour will be offering the country an effective alternative to a government that has failed to rebuild the economy, delivered falling living standards and damaging cuts to our schools and NHS,” he said. Other par ties also backed the move, with the Liberal Democrats saying it would help take the UK away from a hard Brexit and into a different direction.
Pak not using militant groups as proxies: Bajwa ISLAMABAD, APR 18 (PTI): Army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa today said Pakistan is not using militant groups as proxies, asserting that the country is itself a victim of “statesponsored” terrorism. His remarks came a day after US National Security Adviser H R McMaster asked Pakistan’s top civilian and military leadership to confront terrorism in all its forms during a meeting with them. “Pakistan itself is a victim of state-sponsored terrorism. It strongly rejects allegations of employing proxies from its soil,” the army said in a statement quoting Bajwa. The army said that McMaster, who arrived here during an unannounced visit, the first by a top Trump administration official to this country, was briefed about Pakistan’s war on terror and its contributions to regional and global stability during the meeting. “In the meeting it was highlighted that distinguished feature of Pakistan’s counter-terrorism effort is focused against terrorists of all hues and colours,” the statement said.
Pence reassures Japan as North Korea threatens ‘weekly’ tests
TOKYO, APR 18 (AFP): US Vice President Mike Pence reiterated his country’s commitment to the security of Japan today, as North Korea intensified concerns over its weapons programme with a vow to launch missile tests “every week”. The North, which is intent on developing a nuclear-tipped ballistic missile capable of reaching the mainland United States, defied international pressure Sunday with a test that failed immediately after launch. As fears grow that it may also be preparing for its sixth nuclear weapons test, Vice Foreign Minister Han Song-Ryol said that its programme would only escalate. “We’ll be conducting more missile tests on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis,” Han told the BBC in an interview, threatening “all-out war” if the US took any action against it. Arriving in Tokyo for talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Pence hailed the two countries’ longstanding security ties. “The alliance between the United States and Japan is the cornerstone of peace and security in Northeast Asia,” he told

The Japanese leader called for a peaceful resolution to the North Korea tensions but did not rule out the need for tough measures. “It is a matter of paramount importance for us to seek diplomatic efforts as well as peaceable settlements of the issue,” he said. “At the same time dialogue for the sake of dialogue is valueless and it is necessary for us to exercise pressure.” In South Korea on the first leg of an Asian tour, Pence on Monday visited the heavily fortified Demilitarised Zone separating the two Koreas and warned Pyongyang against further provocations, saying “all options are on the table”.
North Korea could react to a potential US strike by targeting South Korea or Japan, and officials in both countries have been ill at ease with the more bellicose language deployed by President Donald Trump’s administration. Pe n c e p o i n t e d t o Trump’s recent strikes on a Syrian airbase and an Islamic State complex in Afghanistan as a warning to Pyongyang not to underestimate the administration’s resolve. Throughout his bareknuckle election campaign, Trump repeatedly called into question a mutual defence treaty between Japan and the United States, suggesting Tokyo should pay for its own security.

He said inborn creativity in man was a gift of God to be developed and used for His glory, however the concept of art in the schools appear to be misunderstood at different levels. Stressing the importance of art in school, he said it was meant to facilitate development of a creative imagination in the child and without this creative imagination the child would just be like another

Asked specifically about when the Code is expected to become a law, Goel said,” We can easily present it in the upcoming Pa r l i a m e n t s e s s i o n .” The monsoon session of Parliament starts in July. Goel made it clear that not many changes are required in the alreadyframed Code. “The Sports Code, if implemented in its present form, is more than enough. Ninety per cent Federations are following it and others will have to fall in line. We have resolved the disputes in the Associations of karate, boxing, tennis and now we have set sights on

archery and basketball. These will also be resolved soon,” he said. The age and tenure of the office-bearers and eligibility of voters in the elections of the Federations are two major issues addressed by the Sports Code. The proposed Code calls for one state one vote for all NSFs whereas in various associations such as the All India Tennis Association (AITA), a few states have more than one votes. The gover nment panel which includes former Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra and legendary Prakash Padukone has been tasked with studying the existing sports governance frame wo r k , i s s u e s r e l a t i n g t o s p o r t s g ove r n a n c e in the countr y, recent developments rela ted to spor ts gover nance, including court judgments & international best practices and make recommendations on bringing out the Code. Recently, the Supreme Court-appointed Lodha Committee had ruled that no minister or a serving bureaucrat be allowed to hold office in the BCCI. Similar provisions are being advocated for other sports as well. “It is my personal view that if a minister cannot devote time towards sports administration and remains outside, it is understandable but Federations cannot be run just by the players,” he said.

New Delhi, Apr 18 (PTI): A comprehensive National Sports Development Code, which is aimed at ensuring sports federations follow certain basic norms, is expected to be brought before Parliament for its approval in the monsoon session, Sports Minister Vijay Goel said today. Goel also warned that national sports federations should not expect anything from the government if they fail to comply with the provisions of the code. A nine-member government panel was formed in January this year to make recommendations for evolving a comprehensive code across all sports disciplines. The panel is expected to give its final report on the much delayed code soon. He also said that the Ministr y has held discussions with various stakeholders on including Sports in the Concurrent list. The ministry will present the matter before the Cabinet for approval once it gets a feedback from all concerned. Speaking on a range of issues during an interaction with PTI journalists, Goel said he personally does not see any harm in letting politicians run National S p o r t s Fe d e r a t i o n s (NSFs). “ W h e n t h e I OA made two charge-sheeted people Life Presidents, we immediately swung into action and suspended t h e I OA . Arsenal end away skid with 2-1 win
Xhaka and Rob Holding join Sanchez to celebrate after the Chilean had given Arsenal a much-needed lead at Middlesbrough.
Lo n d o n, A p r 1 8 (Agencies): Goals from Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil ended Arsenal’s run of four successive away defeats with a scratchy 2-1 victory over struggling Middlesbrough in their Premier League clash on Monday. The Gunners’ performance was far from convincing but will still bring some relief to their beleaguered manager Arsene Wenger. There was a period a ft e r A l va r o N e g r e d o scored an equaliser when Middlesbrough, who have won only four league games this season, looked capable of going on to claim their fifth scalp.
Arsenal are seven points behind four thplaced Manchester City with a game in hand, while Middlesbrough lie six points from safety and have also played one game fewer than most of the teams above them. The French manager announced six changes from the team that lost 3-0 at Palace seven days earlier and, even more significantly, employed wing-backs alongside a defensive trio for the first time since 1997. Arsenal’s attacking difficulties were not unexpected because Middlesbrough went into the game after conceding only 37 goals -- two fewer
than Wenger’s underperforming side. Marten de Roon headed past the Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech midway through the opening half, but was offside - Middlesbrough were unimaginative and with 42 minutes gone, they were behind. A foul by Adam Clayton on the edge of the area was a gift for Sanchez, the Chilean star flighted his free-kick over the wall and inside the post. It was his 19th Premier League goal of the season and only three fewer than the entire Middlesbrough team going into this game, so it was a surprise that the home side suddenly looked capable of producing a
BCCI firm on Sreesanth’s life ban
S. Sreesanth
Kochi, Apr 18 (IANS): Tainted Indian speedster S. Sreesanth has got a shocker from the BCCI with the apex body reiterating that the life ban imposed on him will stay. Sreesanth received the letter from the BCCI on Sunday after he submitted a
review petition seeking the lifting of the life ban in view of his being exonerated by a Delhi court of the matchfixing allegations against him. The BCCI letter states that the Board is ver y particular in ensuring that discipline is maintained and
there is nothing to change their Se ptember, 2013 decision of imposing a life ban on the bowler. The letter also mentions that the decision to impose the life ban was taken by a committee that had as members BCCI Vice President T.C. Mathew and KCA secretary T.N. Ananthanarayanan. After Sreesanth approached the Kerala HC with a petition seeking the lifting of ban imposed by the BCCI, following a Delhi court exonerating him in the spot-fixing case, the court asked him to file a review petition before the BCCI.

Irving shines as Cavs take grip on Pacers
Kyrie Irving of Cleveland Cavaliers drives past CJ Miles of Indiana Pacers during the Game Two of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.
LOS ANGELES, Apr 18 (Agencies): Kyrie Irving scored 37 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers overcame a fierce late fightback from the Indiana Pacers to hold on for a 117111 victory and take a 2-0 series lead in their Eastern Conference playoff duel on Monday. The reigning NBA champions appeared to be cruising to a comfortable win after opening up an 18point lead at the end of the third quarter in front of their home fans at the Quicken Loans Arena. But a Paul George three-pointer saw the Pacers close to within four points with 18.1 seconds remaining to set up a nervous finale as Cleveland’s recent inability
to close out wins reared its head once more. With an upset looming however, Cleveland regained the initiative and two late free throws from Irving put them 117-109 ahead as the final seconds counted down. Irving led Cleveland’s scoring on a night when all of the champions’ big guns fired. LeBron James finished with 25 points while Kevin Love had 27 points. For Indiana, George led the way with 32 points while Jeff Teague weighed in with 23 points and Thaddeus Young 16. The best-of-seven series now heads to Indianapolis on Thursday for Game 3. The Cavaliers had led 3229 after an attritional first
quarter but began to pull away in the second with James to the fore. They forged into a 5139 lead after a 16-2 run before the Pacers battled back to within five points as the half finished with the Cavs up 63-58. However, Cleveland quashed the Pacers fightback at the start of the third quarter, reeling off a 7-0 run to lead by 12 points at 70-58. A three-pointer on the buzzer from Kyrie Irving handed Cleveland a 9678 lead heading into the fourth quarter, an 18-point cushion. The lead was cut to four with 18 seconds to go, but Irving responded to put Cleveland within two wins of a series victory.

During his time with the Blues he also became one of just five defenders to be named PFA Player of the Year. During his time at the club he won four Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups, two Community Shields and both the Europa League and Champions League, while also amassing 78 inter national caps for England, in a glittering career.

L o n d o n, A p r 1 8 (Agencies): Chelsea club captain John Terry will leave the London club at the end of the season having been with the Blues for two decades. Terry, now 36, has been a stalwart at the club as they have transformed from also-rans to one of Europe’s most feared teams, making 713 appearances and hitting 66 goals in a career dating back to 1998. This season has seen game time limited for the Blues captain, with the centre back making just four starts. “I feel I still have plenty to offer on the pitch but understand that opportunities here at Chelsea will be limited for me,” Terry said. “I will, of course, always be a Blue and am desperate to end my final season as a Chelsea player with more silverware.” “I’ve always been conscious that I depart at the right time, in the right way, and I feel that the end of this season is the right time for the club and I. I’m eager to carry on playing and so will be looking to continue with a new challenge.” “ Wo r d s c a n n o t describe the love I have for our football club and our amazing Chelsea fans. response in the second half. Middlesbrough were immediately on the front foot and levelled inside five minutes after Sanchez lost possession. The hosts broke quickly down the right through Stewart Downing, whose cross was missed by Laurent Koscielny before Negredo steered it past Cech. Suddenly, the game burst into life, with Downing heavily involved. The former England winger wasted an excellent opportunity when George Friend’s cross was allowed to reach him at the far post, then the pair combined again to carve out a chance for Ayala. Downing’s cross was headed back towards goal by Friend and Ayala looked certain to score before he directed his header too close to Cech. Arsenal’s response was impressive in the 63rd minute as Sanchez’s through ball picked out Ozil, but goalkeeper Brad Guzan sensed the danger and did well to save at the feet of the German international. However, the outcome was different in their next confrontation eight minutes later. Sanchez was involved again with a cross that was chested down by Aaron Ramsey, leaving Ozil with the chance to drill Arsenal back in front from close range.
