KTKK serves ultimatum over incomplete bridge
DIMAPUR, APR 17 (NPN): Taking strong exception to the unfinished Shozukhu-Zukihe Bridge under Dimapur district, the Khaghaboto Area GBs’ Association (KTKK) on Monday advised the responsible parties to sort out the differences within 15 days time in larger interest of the affected people. In a press release, KTKK president, Vikato Ayemi, cautioned that failure to resolve the issue within stipulated period would compel the association to take its own course of action for completion of the bridge. Drawing the attention of the PWD (R&B) to the issue, the association pointed out that the work was awarded to M/s PABSCON in 2005, which was to be completed within 24 months. However, it stated that the work stopped mid way for reason best known to the contractor and the department. Reminding that the said bridge was the lifeline to almost half part of Sumi villages under Western Sumi area, KTKK said people had patiently waited for years for completion of the bridge. It said the silence of the contractor and department has dashed the expectation that people had upon the government.

Police in appointment radar
NAGALAND CONG PUTS POLICE DEPTT IN THE DOCK WITH FACTS & FIGURES DIMAPUR, APR 17 (NPN): Police department has again been put in the dock by the recently formed Nagaland Congress (NC) which questioned the department for the “alarming appointments of Nonlocals (15%)” and the high number of “under/unqualified candidates”. NC through its media cell revealed that 7005 candidates were appointed from January 2009 to December 3, 2015 against the posts of– constable, NCE, ABSI, UBSI and ASI. NC said 64 were MA/equivalent (0.91%), 610 were BA/ equivalent (9%), 1381 were 10+ (20%) and 4050 were 0-10 (71%). It stated that most non-tribal appointees were in the category of Class 0-10. NC stated that out of the 23805 employees (as on October 13, 2016) in the police department, 3418 were non-locals, which constitute about 15% employees in the department. It claimed that non-locals were currently second highest employees in police department, surpassing all
native tribes (except one) of the state. Stating that the PHQ office later gave a revised figure at 6838, NC said even then 747 non-locals were appointed constituting 11% of total appointment. Further, pointing out that appointment of nonlocal was fourth highest (as on December 3, 2015), the NC said those non-locals largely were Nepali, Bihari, Assamese, Muslims and people from Kerela, UP, Manipur etc, substantial number of Kuki and fewer numbers of Kachari, Garo, Mizo and other Naga tribal from outside the state. With regard to the mode of appointment, in the case of 6838 candidates, the NC said 1160 (17%) was through recruitment process while 1672 (24%) through departmental and 4007 (59%) through PHQ, Comdnt, SP etc. It stated that departmental appointment was more of direct appointment in most battalions and units rather than through actual recruitment process. Direct appointment,
Excommunication of Ozukum ‘emotional and illogical outburst’: NPUCL DIMAPUR, APR 17 (NPN): Naga People’s Union for Civil Liberties (NPUCL), through its president Kahorngam Zimik has come down hard against Ao Senden for having recently excommunicated P. Chuba Ozukum Naga Hoho president (who defied Senden by not resigning the post). Zimik termed the decision of the Senden to excommunicate Ozukum as an “emotional and illogical outburst” where restraint would have better served the interest of all Nagas as a whole. He also opined that “many tribal councils” act more with “emotion than prudent decision”. Zimik said that as Naga Hoho represents all Naga tribes and therefore, “by resorting to such cheap and unwarranted act, we are harming the prestige and authority of the only united apex council of the Nagas” that was precious to the common journey. Zimik urged upon all Naga tribal organisation, especially Ao Senden to reconsider the excommunication of Chuba Ozukum in the interest of all Nagas and address all issues “democratically and amicably”.

KOHIMA, APR 17 (NPN): As part of their phase wise agitation against non-payment of salaries for almost half a year, the Nagaland RMSA Teachers’ Association-2016 (NRMSATA-2016) on Monday launched its phase-I agitation by boycotting classes. The association would boycott classes for three days from April 17-19, 2017, which would be followed by poster campaign (phaseII) and sit-in protest at the directorate of school education or secretariat (phase-III). Talking to media persons here Monday afternoon, NRMSATA president, Renbemo L. Patton, and general secretary, Khezhothito Keyho, highlighted about the struggle of the teachers had to undergo. They lamented that despite several representations and ultimatum, the responsible department did not respond, which they said only showed that the department did not have any concern for the teachers. NRMSATA president also stated that till date neither the state government nor the school educa-

tion department has called for a meeting to solve the issue. Further, the association president recalled that in December 2016, the department while disbursing salaries (till October 2016) had assured to clear the rest two months (November-December) in January 2017. However, he said the department has instead prolonged as they have not been paid for almost six months now. He also recalled that in February when offices were forced to remain closed, the state government appealed to the pressure group to allow the government offices to function so that salaries could be released. The association president said that the state government has huge concern for the state employees but not for CSS employees like SSA, Hindi or RMSA. NRMSATA general secretary, Keyho, said that five months have already lapsed and many teachers were in debts. He said that unless the teachers were remunerated for their work, they would not continue their work. “We have passed the limit of patience,” he said.
Kma citizens struggle with cash shortage

KOHIMA, APR 17 (NPN): People in Kohima have been left cash-strapped for nearly five days as most of the ATMs were left with little or no cash. The shortage of cash has also severely affected the business community. According to a bank official, the reason might be due to the Government’s move to boost digital trans-
NEW DELHI, APR 17 (AGENCIES): The Rastriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is backing Dr. S.C. Jamir, a senior Congressman from Nagaland and current Odisha Governor, as its vice presidential nominee, a senior RSS pracharak in the Northeast, told The Wire. If Jamir is elected to the post, he will be the first vice president from the Northeast. The RSS, has been working to spread the influence of the BJP in the region. “There is a list of candidates for the post of vice president [with the government] but we are supporting the candidature of former Nagaland chief minister S.C. Jamir,” an RSS pracharak told The Wire from Shillong on April 17. I have had discussions with the central leadership of RSS on this issue and we have their support.” Though the BJP has not officially named its candidate for the post of vice president yet, Ram Madhav, party national secretary in charge of the Northeast, hinted at such a possibility in a tweet after a meeting with Jamir in Bhubaneswar (Cont’d on p-8) on April 16. iceberg, but it spoke volume about the dirt of backdoor appointments elsewhere. NC maintained that the state government and NPF “as usual” could still react negatively to its disclosure. However, it said that whichever way they react, they must first give straight answers to its three vital questions. (i) Why and how non locals are given such unacceptable size of appointment (15% of total employees) in police department by depriving that much the locals? (ii) Why around 71% appointment were given to under/unqualified candidates and only about 29% to qualified candidates during 2009 - 2015, when 50000 or more Naga educated youth are steadily rendered jobless? (iii) Why is only 17% of appointment done through open recruitment process and massive 83% through questionable departmental process and direct appointment by PHQ, unit commandant and SP during 2009 - 2015?
NRMSATA phase wise stir begins
This is it!
“No cash in that ATM. Is this what is meant by cashless society?.”
NC said could have crossed over 70% because around 71% of appointees were in the category of Class 0-10, who it said had “unquestionably” not gone through any recruitment process. Claiming that detail records of each battalion and unit was in its custody, the NC said the stated findings could be substantiated with further evidences, as and when need arose. According to NC, as on May 31, 2016, there were precisely 70420 young job seekers –– under matriculate (21033), Matriculate (11902), Pre-University (13025), Graduate (19068), Post Graduate (3795), Degree [Tech (920)] and Diploma (67) –– registered in live register with the office of employment, skill & entrepreneurship, Nagaland. “This is the harsh reality state government is unwilling to address, NPF is not even aware, yet senselessly challenging those who have facts,” Nagaland Congress said. NC stated that appointment in police department was just the tip of
actions. State Bank of India (SBI) which owned 40 ATMs also went dry since last few days. On Monday, SBI main branch office was jampacked with customers for transactions and withdrawals. Interacting with Nagaland Post, SBI chief manager Kohima Nirmal Singh said Reserve Bank of India (RBI) did not sent enough cash while SBI also disburse
money to other banks. He said on number of occasions, SBI Kohima received cash from Dimapur SBI main branch or Baazar Branch and the money has been managed for government offices which has more than 100 departments. Few lakhs of cash gets over within an hour or two, he said. Singh said that the shortage of cash was already conveyed to RBI. He further added that the reason must be because of digital transaction by saying that not only in Northeast but the entire county was facing shortage of cash. The chief manager also said that many customers from other banks were also using SBI’s ATMs, and that they cannot decline any customers be it SBI’s or others. It was also learnt from business establishments that there has been drastic fall in the market during the last four to five days.

NSCN (R) demands unconditional release of cadres
DIMAPUR, APR 17 (NPN): NSCN (R) has demanded immediate and unconditional release of its cadres, who were under the captivity of NSCN (I-M). MIP of NSCN (R) said that it would not tolerate the “ghastly act” of NSCN (I-M) in detaining its cadres without any rhyme and reason, when the Nagas were yearning for peace and unity amongst various section of the Naga society. It therefore, urged the NSCN (I-M) to abstain from such unwanted activities, considering the fragile Naga political situation. Further, NSCN (R) cautioned the “Hebron campers” that it would not remain a mute spectator but would act accordingly and said that for any unwanted situation NSCN (I-M) would be held accountable.

Hamid Ansari’s term will end in August. According to news reports, besides Jamir, Jharkhand governor Draupadi Murmu and Maharashtra governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao are also contenders to the vice president post. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly not yet expressed his preference for any candidate. He was supposed to discuss the issue in “pull-aside meetings” at the BJP national executive held in Odisha on April 15-16, though the outcome of such “meetings” has not yet been reported in the media. Besides being a fivetime chief minister of Nagaland – three of these as a Congressman – 87-year-old Jamir, “is suited for the post as he is a patriot, never supported the separation of the
Naga people from Bharat,” said the pracharak. Jamir, who also served as the parliamentary secretary to India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, was a member of the committee that held talks with the central government in 1960 that led to the formation of Nagaland as a state and is one of the signatories of the 16-point agreement. “What is important is also that by choosing Jamir, the Narendra Modi government will send a strong message to the Northeast about bringing the region to the national mainstream,” the pracharak said, which in turn, “will help the BJP gain power in Meghalaya and Nagaland, also because Jamir is a devout Christian.” (Cont’d on p-8)
Heavy rainfall expected in Nagaland and NE states GUWAHATI, APR 17 (AGENCIES): Apart from Northeast India, almost the entire country is reeling under hot weather conditions. Temperatures are rising up in most parts of the country with heat wave conditions prevailing in parts of West and Central India. But, states like Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh are observing moderate to heavy rains all through March and April. And as of now, the Northeastern parts of the country will be witnessing moderate rain and thundershower activities from April 19. Around April 21 to 23, Skymet Weather expects heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Such weather conditions over these states are expected to continue until April 26.
As per Skymet Weather, the reasons for these heavy rains can be attributed to the moderate winds coming from the Bay of Bengal. We expect a Cyclonic Circulation to form and persist over northern parts of West Bengal and adjoining areas. Moreover, moisture incursion is prevailing over the entire Northeastern states. As of now, heavy to extremely heavy rain spells, at one or two places is expected over the region, especially over Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh in the next 48 hours. Thereafter, the rain intensity will reduce over Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. However, Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura will continue with moderate to heavy rains for another 24-48 hours. These rains may cause flooding and water logging at many parts.

Dr. Liezietsu further went on to point out that the soil in Nagaland was young, making it more landslide prone compare to other North Eastern states. “The damages caused by rainfall here are often overlooked since our soils don’t retain the rain water which destroys not only our crops but also our roads,’ he said. Moreover, the chief minister said that the flood in Brahmaputra river was because of rainfall in Nagaland. The IMCT team also included-- director, department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers Welfare Kolkata; Dr. Manoharan, joint director department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, S.C. Meena; AD (H) department of Rural Development, Delhi, Mohit Verma and Executive Engineer, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Guwahati, Sachin Kumar Gautam as members. Zou was welcomed and felicitated at a function by chief minister N. Biren Singh after he arrived from Odisha Monday. 14 Congress ADC (Autonomous District Council) members from Chandel district who joined the BJP were also felicitated. BJP sources claimed that so far 11 Congress MLAs have given sent in feelers to join the BJP. Some prominent leaders of the Congress were also among the 11 legislators. Congress had emerged as the single largest party with 28 MLAs in the recently concluded elections. Th Shyamkumar was the first Congress MLA to defect to BJP after he was reportedly
assured a cabinet berth. However, source added that the party (BJP) was targeting to rope in two-third of the 27 Congress MLAs which was now reduced to 26 after Ginsuanhau Zou formally joined the BJP. On the other hand, chief minister N. Biren Singh informed the gathering that the issue regarding resignation of Health minister, Jayentakumar of NPP was resolved. Singh said “it was not a big problem that surfaced out of misunderstanding and communication gap and the matter has been settled after talks with the minister himself.” NPP national president Conrad K Sangma also rushed to Manipur and held a meeting with party cadres before meeting the chief minister. At the meeting with party men, Sangma was voiced out against pulling out of the BJP-led coalition government.

In reply to a question on whether BJP would get the support of Congress on these issues, Sarma said he is “counting on it just like we did on the GST Bill”. He said the idea of two child proviso was first mooted under the previous Congress government. On the controversy over beef consumption and cow vigilantism, Sarma said most people in Assam “are in tune with what RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has stated”. Bhagwat has called for all-India ban on cow slaughter. “As an individual I feel Bhagwat has not said anything which is not a part of the Constitution. This is mentioned in the Directive Principles of State Policy in the Constitution. Mahatma Gandhi had also called for cow protection,” Sarma said. However, he conceded that some states in the North-East have sizable number of people who consume beef. “The party needs to respect cultural diversity. But our main focus in the North-East is to reduce regional diversity and ensure development of the region,” he said.

said. He underlined that such a law will have to be “humanised” in some special cases like a couple having twins or in case of death of a child or any such untoward incident. “We are going to recommend to Parliament soon that those contesting elections in Assam should not have more than two children,” Sarma said, hinting that this may be started with the local bodies. Haryana and Rajasthan already have such a provision. Asked about the charge from some quarters that both these plans — minimum educational qualification and two child norm- would affect Muslims the most — Sarma said, “Muslims would be the worst sufferers as most of the migrant Muslim families in Assam have 7-8 children. But the intended law is not being made to target Muslims. Even our tea garden workers (who are mostly Hindus) have 4-5 children,” he said. Sarma lamented that some of the educated Muslim families have gone for big families and said only Hindus seem to follow the two child norm.

BHUBANESWAR, APR 17 (AGENCIES): BJP government in Assam is considering a law to fix a minimum education criterion for contesting elections in the state, be it for local bodies or state assembly, education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said. The minimum education qualification could be graduation, Sarma told ET on the sidelines of the BJP National Executive Meeting here. “For the scheduled caste and scheduled tribe there will be some relaxation like being a matriculate,” he said. Sarma, who is also the health minister of Assam, had earlier announced that those having more than two children should not be given government jobs or allowed to become MPs and MLAs. A law to this effect is in the works in Assam, he said. “I had made this suggestion first in 2009 as the health minister in the Congress government in Assam. The Tarun Gogoi cabinet had approved it then and I had moved a resolution on the issue in the Assam assembly,” he

SC seeks Chhattisgarh, CRPF’s response on encounter killings
NEW DELHI, Apr 17 (agencies): The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Chhattisgarh Government and CRPF to respond to a petition seeking transfer of a plea pending in the High Court for a court-monitored probe into alleged extra-judicial killings in the state. A bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta issued notices to the state government and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) after it was told that the apex court is already seized of a similar matter dealing with identical questions of law which has been raised. Advocate
Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the petitioners, told the bench that the apex court was dealing with the matter filed by Nandini Sundar and the issues raised in the plea before high court was similar to the one which is being adjudicated upon here. He said that the matter pending in the high court should be transferred to the apex court. The apex court, in July 2011, had declared as illegal and unconstitutional the deployment of tribal youths as special police officers or members of ‘Salwa Judum’ or any other force in Chhattisgarh in counter-insurgency against the Maoist.
The order had come on a petition filed by Nandini Sundar and others. During the hearing today, Bhushan said the high court had refrained from going ahead with the matter pending before it as the apex court is already hearing a similar matter. The plea, filed by Suneeta Pottam, Munni Pottam and an NGO women against sexual violence and state repression, said the matter pending in the high court “deals with several extra judicial executions by police and security forces that have occurred in the state of Chhattisgarh during the course of the counterinsurgency campaign. “While the security forces claim that these cases are of ambush of security forces by Naxalites and the ensuing deaths have resulted due to firing in self defence, the villagers and family members of the deceased assert that these are killings of unarmed villagers, who have been executed in cold-blood by security forces, the plea claimed. The petition said the plea pending before the apex court highlights instances of encounters and human rights violations in the state and in both the matters, the petitioners have sought court-monitored investigation in cases of encounter

BJP, Sangh Parivar out to polarise Goa on beef issue, says Faleiro
Panaji, Apr 17 (IANS); Statements by BJP MP Subramanian Swamy and a senior VHP official seeking ban on beef consumption in Goa are an attempt by the party to polarise the state’s Hindu and Catholic communities, state Congress chief Luizinho Faleiro said on Monday. “These people are making statements deliberately with a hidden agenda to polarise the people on communal lines and divide Goans, Faleiro said. Faleiro’s remarks came a day after VHP’s central secretary Acharya Radhakrishna Manori said the Sangh Parivar outfit would impress upon the central government to impose a beef ban in Goa, where more than a third of the population comprises minorities who consume beef. Beef-oriented cuisine also finds favour with a significant chunk of the hundreds of thousands of tourists, who visit the state every year.

Party out of sync
t’s a sorry state of affairs for India’s oldest party-Congress- which led the freedom struggle against the colonial power but today a shadow of its former self as multiple problems weigh it down. The drubbing in 2014 has not resulted in lessons being learnt. The Congress is gradually fading away to irrelevance. Today it has been losing one state after the other and could only manage to be third best in alliance with other parties in various states. The recent turn of events points to a larger underlying problem in the Congress; that of the command-and-control mechanism. The problem is with the coteries of power brokers rooted as the party high command. The only merit is based on the merit they possess as ‘Gandhi loyalists’. The coterie in the Congress high command has failed on many counts and in many ways but they are not accountable. The most recent abject failures of the powerful coterie was in Manipur, where despite winning 28 seats to the BJP’s 21, the Congress failed to form the government. The AICC in-charge went to Imphal only after results were declared whereas BJP top guns including NPP were there days ahead of the counting. In Goa too the Congress which won 17 and BJP 13 failed to stake claim to form the government. A grateful union defence minister Manohar Parrikar thanked Digvijay Singh for that. To add to the misgiving about the party, the conflicting stand among its leaders on the issue of EVMs takes the cake. After the drubbing in UP, Congress joined opposition parties in raising Cain about the EVMs and demanding demonstration test(s). The party’s demand did not find favour with some of its veteran leaders. Former union minister Veerappa Moily slammed the party for jointly submitting a petition to the ECI to probe EVMs. He said it was the mindset of defeatists. Punjab chief minister Capt. Amarinder Singh spoke against the line taken by the party against EVMs. Punjab chief minister Capt. Amarinder Singh also differed and criticised the party demand. He said if the EVMs were defective, then it means that the Congress win in Punjab was also suspect. Such differences within the party and at a time when there are voices wondering who is in charge, does not favour to the party. The EVM tampering issue has gained momentum after a video went viral on social media showing the EVM displaying same result even after the officials pressed different buttons, during a demonstration conducted by the Election Commission in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind district. The Opposition leaders, including Congress president Sonia Gandhi, met the President on the EVM issue and to raise their concern over what they dubbed as an “environment of fear and insecurity” in the country, asking him to “protect the constitutional democracy and fundamental rights” of the citizens. Other political parties including Mayawati’s BSP and Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP have also been crying foul over the EVM tampering issue. Their political compulsion shows the grand old party lacks statesmanship as well as vision for resurrection. As with all organisations, the Congress leaders cannot absolve themselves of the blame and need to come up with something –whether a new leadership team or effective response to attacks – which would decide whether the party remains or is reduced to irrelevance.
DailyDevotion All or Nothing? When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment…and plunged into the sea. —John 21:7 Have you ever had a crisis in your life in which you deliberately, earnestly, and recklessly abandoned everything? It is a crisis of the will. You may come to that point many times externally, but it will amount to nothing. The true deep crisis of abandonment, or total surrender, is reached internally, not externally. The giving up of only external things may actually be an indication of your being in total bondage. Have you deliberately committed your will to Jesus Christ? It is a transaction of the will, not of emotion; any positive emotion that results is simply a superficial blessing arising out of the transaction. If you focus your attention on the emotion, you will never make the transaction. Do not ask God what the transaction is to be, but make the determination to surrender your will regarding whatever you see, whether it is in the shallow or the deep, profound places internally. If you have heard Jesus Christ’s voice on the waves of the sea, you can let your convictions and your consistency take care of themselves by concentrating on maintaining your intimate relationship to Him.

The greatest legacy one can pass on to one’s children and grandchildren is not money or other material things accumulated in one’s life, but rather a legacy of character and faith. ~ Billy Graham

human eats, defecates, reproduces, dies. And in between tries to give meaning to his life by being as destructive as he can of everything around him. An animal also eats, defecates, reproduces and dies and leaves the planet intact. Whom would God choose, I wonder, to enter his heaven? Human beings have no respect for their own defecation, nor does it really matter where they go: in communal bathrooms, in individual ones or in the open. They eat and drink so badly that their faeces stinks and spreads disease. Even the poo of a little baby is full of harmful bacteria. But animals, especially wild ones, are particular. Many species choose communal latrine areas to defecate and urinate. Raccoons, badgers, hyenas, elephants, antelopes, deer, lizards and horses. In fact a 240 million year old defecation site of the Dinodontosaurus, found in 2013 in Talampaya National Park, Argentina, has been called the world’s oldest public toilet. Hyraxes and moles, who live underground, come above ground to defecate on sites that become dunghills. These sites also become territorial markers for the group to warn off other groups from the area. These toilets are at strategic locations, away from where the animals feed and sleep. Are humans the only ones who build bathrooms? Social insects, like the Black Garden Ant, use specialized toilet area in their own nests – just like us. Jerdon’s Jumping Ants build refuse chambers in their nests, well below
their living areas. Faeces and waste, such as uneaten food, is dumped there. Leaf cutter ants deposit their faeces in a pile outside their nests and have a special group of ants whose only job is to deal with the waste.Spidermites weave nests, and all the nest members defecate only at one site inside the nest. Each living being (apart from humans who defecate in the same fields they grow crops in and next to the water pumps they drink from) believes in sanitation. Horses and other grazing animals use dedicated latrine areas so that grazing areas are kept pollution and parasite free. Going one step further, antelopes deliberately defecate on exposed sites which are nutrient deficient, like sandy soil or rocky areas. Their faeces enriches the soil and deposits undigested plant seeds. What are the elimination habits of some species? When it becomes very hot, vultures defecate on their own legs. The principle is the same as sweat— as the liquid evaporates it cools their skins. Caterpillars shoot their granola flake size faeces (insect faeces is called frass) out of their rear ends with such force that it lands 40 times their length, away. This rocket disposal avoids attracting carnivorous ants. White footed Lemurs, who live in Madagascar, stay in loose knit families. They move around independently at night and live on separate trees. But to stay in touch, and communicate information, the entire family defecates at the same clump of trees which is in the centre of their ter-
Who is cleaner? ritory. The lemur clings to the tree trunk, lift its tail up and drops the faeces to the ground. By sniffing these trees, family members exchange information. The males also leave scents from their scent glands which warn off other non- family lemurs. Dwarf lemurs smear their faeces on branches of trees, creating a thick buildup. Bamboo lemurs, create communal toilets around the trees where they sleep or eat. By doing this, the animals focus on defending important resources, instead of the entire territory. Nor ther n Collared Lemmings have faeces that glows ultraviolet, which birds of prey can see, so they build underground toilets in order to avoid predators. Meerkats, underground squirrel like creatures who live in families of hundreds, have communal latrines in the core of their territories which they use daily. But they also ring their territories with latrines, which are used sparingly but mark their areas. This prevents any face to face confrontations between families. Some solitary carnivores also use communal toilets. The fiercely solitary ocelot, or dwarf leopard of South America, defecates in communal latrines which act as information centres. Female ocelots can convey if they are ready to mate, and male ocelots advertise
their presence to others in the area. Two completely separate, solitary, carnivore species share latrines, like the Pampas Cats and the fox-like Culpeos, who use the same rocky caves of the Andes. Rhinos often tread through their dunghills, sniffing the dung at the piles to decode messages left in them by other rhinos. In a study published in January 2015, researchers found that rhinos spent no time in sniffing dung from group members, but took a long time over the dung of strangers. Birds don’t defecate in their nests. They even take the poo done by their babies and carry it out of the nest to drop it somewhere else Rabbits and capybaras produce two kinds of poop: hard, dry pellets and soft ones. The soft ones are eaten again so that no minerals go waste. Hawaii’s beautiful white-sand beaches are simply the faeces of parrotfish. Nearly every grain of sand is a bit of coral that travels throughits body and ends up as sand. Each fish contributes about 400 kilograms a year. The Australian wombat, a relative of the Koala, is unique in the animal kingdom in that it produces cube shaped poo– around 80 to 100 cubes per night. It lives in underground bur-

rows during the day, but comes out at night to forage on vegetation. Wombats deposit faeces on the tops of rocks and logs, where they can be easily found by other wombats. The flat sides of the cubes ensure they do not roll off their locations. Small cats whether domestic or wild, like servals, bury their faeces. Dominant wild cats, like lions, tigers, leopards and jaguars, that compete for territory, leave it in the open to signal that they have claimed the area as their own. Pe r e g r i n e Fa l c o n s defecate before take-off to lighten their load when flying. Dogs don’t bury their faeces. They perform a ritual designed to advertise their presence. Dogs have scent glands between their toes. They use their back feet to vigorously scratch the ground around their droppings as a visual marker. Blind naked mole rats also have bathrooms in their nests. Nest mates regularly visit this area and rub their bodies with the waste to coat themselves with pheromones that identify them as members of the group. Honey bees go on “defecation flights” to deposit their faeces far from the hive. During the cold days of winter, they don’t leave their nests, but when it becomes warmer they leave the hive en masse for one large group poop. Stingless bees have specialized members of the hive dedicated to waste removal. Chinchillas defecate in latrines. They mix their faeces with plant materials and then urinate on them, which form crystals that seal the latrine. Newly born termites cannot digest wood, so they
first feed on faeces from adults, often right from their anuses. They ingest bacteria which then allow them to eat wood. The termitesCoptotermes formosanu use faecesto build their nests. This helps them fend off diseases, because beneficial bacteria feed on termite waste. It’s like building a home out of antibiotics. Three-lined potato beetles use their own faeces as a defence against predators. They feed on poisonous plants and pile their own excreta onto their backs as a chemical shield. Badgers live in family groups of six individuals in underground homes with many rooms, entrances and tunnels. They keep their living quarters clean and will and drag old hay, grass, bracken and plastic bags outside to prevent fleas and lice. Badgers will not bring food into their homes, and defecate in distant shallow pits. Elephant faeces is so informative that one piece of dung will tell you the age of the animal (the greater the diameter, the older the elephant), the size, the gender, diet, when the elephant was there and its health condition People who live in areas with poor sanitation often suffer from water-borne diseases, when excrement gets into their drinking water. All our sewers flow into the rivers that give us drinking water. But the adage that you shouldn’t “poop where you eat” doesn’t seem to apply to humans. Even cockroaches collect faeces and dump it outside their nests. So who is cleaner? To join the animal welfare movement contact gandhim@ nic.in, www.peopleforanimalsindia.org

t first I was adamant to give a counter rejoinder to the Present Lotha Hoho rejoinder, but after flying through their immature rejoinder being an elderly fellows I’m close to give them a counter rejoinder because if I remain mute, people around will consider their rejoinder as true, therefore today, let me dig out some very few hidden facts of the present Lotha Hoho anarchy rule in the name of Lotha which many lotha people are scared to voice out and against their dictatorship because if anyone speak out the truth will be threaten with the dire consequences by excommunicating from the lotha community which is highly unacceptable before God and the people and so on behalf of all the lotha people I take this episode to crack the nut for public consumption. My recent article on” Stop Jeopardizing the Framework Agreement” has deeply cause a huge trauma by the two person namely Ex. MLA Mhao Humtsoe and Er. Mhandamo Ovung. Before I proceed towards to give them their awaiting reply to this two person on their bully question raised in the air let me shot a few line , yes the present Lotha Hoho have the right to express whatever they want from their small kitchen under freedom of expression but Naga will move on with the world. Naga people should bear them for a moment; their concept is momentary with the dawn of Naga solution finally arrives at. To clear the Lotha Hoho weariness about my profile let me announce who Elian.Z.Lotha is. I’m a Naga Lotha by blood, I have absolute right to use any credentials that I want to be and would like to be, I do not need anyone permission to use or uphold my name so the query made by an elderly person on my profile does not arise at all, or do any
Counter rejoinder to Lotha Hoho
lotha’s who wish to name or called their newly child born has to seek permission from the present Lotha Hoho? Or does the Lotha Hoho has made a new rules and regulation or introduce a new customary law for the usage of names for the lotha’s? As a Naga by blood”Naga first, Tribe second, clan third” is my prime principle that I uphold fearlessly. Lotha Hoho question on Nagas do not know the Framework Agreement is only confined to their small kitchen, so taking Nagas name as a whole does not qualified at all and which solidly declared themselves as a cowardice, because there are more than( forty plus) Naga tribes who has endorse and unanimously gave their fullest support on the Framework Agreement which was signed on 3rd August,2015 by God’s grace answering the prayers and yearning of the Naga people for the last 70 years to end the protracted war between the GOI and the Nagas where lakhs of lives have been lost leaving behind many orphans and widows, thus every true Naga civilised citizen look forward to a final solution at the earliest and eagerly waiting for the glorious moment of the Nagas to be a “New Nation” and the next question about the mushrooming of the NGO’s and factions are people like you who represent in the NGO’s i.e NTC,CNTC, and some pocket of writers who against the God’s will and against the Naga National principles with the new slogan” Nagas of Nagaland” jeopardizing the Naga Political Movement without people’s mandate are considered as the mushrooming and the parasite in the Naga society. Meanwhile, to enlighten the confusion on the content of its Framework Agreement question by an elderly people an Ex-MLA Mhao Humtsoe and retired Er. Mhondamo Ovung, let me sharpen their myopic
view towards the Naga Political Movement in short, when all the Naga People’s way back in 1960 have accepted even the 16th Point Agreement which was drafted under the Indian constitution but whereas the 3rd August,2015 Framework Agreement was framed outside the constitution of India, with the Naga people’s mandate the NSCN on behalf of the Naga’s are now engaging for the final settlement with GOI and has started a good decision based on mutual respect and coexistence as two separate entity Nation while recognizing our unique history and its identity, and Nagas will be owners of our land and resources, Naga shall exercise absolute power over their land and the People and when the Nagas are set to have our own separate constitution than what more do the Nagas want and what content the Lotha Hoho are seeking for? Questioning and demanding on the content are just without reasoning. George Bernard Shaw rightly said” People who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing” so the present Lotha Hoho should better stay away from the God’s blessing and the Naga hard earn Framework Agreement and suggesting them to just wait and watch the outcome of its achievement. However, I do not blame them for not keeping aware of this vital subject owing to their “Sunset stage and unsound mind” but i hope they will understand by now. You declared yourself as a leader and if you don’t aware of such simmering issues how can you be consider as a leader? And on the representative in NTC and CNTC, let me say how and when did Lotha People had a consultative meeting to endorse them to represent on behalf of the Lotha’s? Can few pocket of People can decide the future of Lotha’s?.” leaders should
speak with honesty, Think with sincerity. Act with integrity”. A true leader is one who bridges the gap between the Government and the Public for the welfare of the society but to my utter surprise you people are even against of the government, and against of the National principles than what types of leadership is exercising? Lotha People’s are not scared to counter the present Lotha Hoho leadership, but the Lotha People’s condemned and against of their leadership, we the Lotha people can no longer stay as silent spectators anymore because our future is at stake under the Present Lotha Hoho leadership. It will be quite surprise if we dig deeply the whole ugly episode how Mhao Humtsoe and Er. Mhondamo Ovung Hoho has been established before the public domain. In the year 2012, a consultative meeting was held at LTC Hall wokha, with all the Lotha People and spoke in support of the decision taken by the general people and unanimously decided to support the Kyong Hoho and extended for another tenure under the guideline of the Lotha Hoho. But unfortunately some few vested people and power hunger forcefully hijacked the Lotha people’s mandate leaders and outrightly “ backdoor entry” to form the present Lotha Hoho from the People’s mandate Kyong Hoho and their lies a question mark on the stability of Lotha future that have so far underpinned the Lotha’s destiny. The Lotha guidelines which was drafted during the chairmanship of Mr. L.Nim Odyou in the year 22nd Nov 1990 and the convenor drafting committee Mr. A. Khyochamo Khuvung and convenor amendment committee Mr. A. Thungbemo Patton as the guidelines of the Lotha Hoho and this guidelines has been unanimously accepted by the whole Lotha’s appreciated and ac-
knowledge before God and the Lotha People. So does the present Lotha Hoho has applied the guidelines during the formation of the Lotha Hoho? If the present Lotha Hoho has followed the guidelines and the procedures of the Lotha Hoho which is constructively framed for the future of the Lotha people, than I Elian.Z.Lotha and the Lotha’s in general will solidly extend our fullest support to the present Lotha hoho but if such guidelines and the procedures were not followed to form the present Lotha hoho than, the present leaders should resign from their leadership on morale ground before God and the Lotha people. Civilised Lotha People and intellectual should seriously ponder this situation of what future, and which road the Lotha’s is heading towards. Mhao Humtsoe and Er. Mhandamo Ovung cannot decide the Lotha future. The Present Lotha Hoho dictatorship towards the people will be “totally unacceptable”. The question rises on whether the future of Lotha’s is progressing under the leadership of Mhao Humtsoe and Er. Mhondamo Ovung which
reveal deeper paranoid fears that we the Lotha;s need to confront as lotha future has become “ handicapped” lead by by certain pocket of people and there is no guarantee under the leadership of present Lotha Hoho. Albert Einstein beautifully said “The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything”. This upset that Lotha future discourse has “become coarse with rancor” and it is not conducive to present situation when the Naga Political settlement is set to arrived. Therefore the Naga People’s should not confused by the present Lotha hoho write up and representing the NTC and CNTC which is not the Lotha general people’s manate and sincerely appeal the Naga People not to be swayed away by whatever the present Lotha Hoho barked around in the name of Lotha People’s because they are doing by few self styled leader with their own whims and fancy and for which the Lotha People will not be held responsible in the near future. Reader’s Post Youth recreation centre Sir,
To help youths stay active and also provide a safe environment for them it’s time to provide the youth community recreation centres where they could spent their time with friends. It’s vital to engage the youths where they could interact instead of wandering around looking out for places in every nook and corner. It important that young people have the support, opportunities and services needed to prosper and contribute where they live, learn, work, play and make a difference. A recreation centre that provides information, assistance and opportunities would be of great help for the present generation. Sanen Lemtur, 4th Mile Dimapur

Pradesh last month, the BJP and its allies have improved their tally in the electoral college by around 53,000 votes. It is still short of about 40,000 votes to reach the magic figure of 549,441 required for a majority in the electoral college, which that elects the president and the vice president and has a total of 10,98,882 votes. Jamir, who served as a governor of Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat, was appointed the governor of Odisha by the Manmohan Singh government in March 2013. Besides former Lt. NC said it was a pity that parents invest so much on children’s education and students spent good many years for higher education, but elected government did not believe in
preferential treatment for qualified in job. NC has vowed to bring out more employment related facts and figures to reveal why large educated youth have become jobless due to (i) excessive appointment of non locals (ii) excessive direct appointment & (iii) excessive appointment of under/unqualified candi-

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI, Apr 17 (Agencies): The government plans to sell stakes worth $5.4 billion in seven state-run companies during the current financial year as it looks to fund its fiscal deficit amid rampedup spending on rural areas and infrastructure. The part sale of government stakes in state-run and private firms is critical to meet the fiscal deficit target of 3.2 per cent of gross domestic product in the year to March 2018. The government aims to raise Rs 725 billion through stake sales during the year. The Department of Investment and Public Asset Management has sought bids from merchant bankers and legal advisors to manage the sale of shares in firms including Indian Oil Corp Ltd , NTPC Ltd and Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), according to bidding documents on its website.

Mumbai, Apr 17 (PTI): After a brief recovery, the rupee once again turned weaker against the US currency and lost 11 paise to close at 64.52 on fresh bouts of dollar demand from importers amid continued geo-political headwinds. Headline-driven volatility and nervousness due to the ongoing tensions between US and North Korea predominantly kept forex market sentiment shaky despite subdued dollar overseas. Sluggish domestic equities also weighed on trade, though smooth supply of dollars due to persistent capital inflows into equities and debts largely cushioned the fall. New Delhi, Apr 17 (IANS): National passenger carrier Air India has formulated new guidelines to deal with unruly passengers with hefty fines up to Rs 15 lakh proposed. According to AI sources, a new set of guidelines and fines have been drafted by the airline’s legal team which is awaiting approval from Air India’s Chairman and Managing Director Ashwani Lohani’s office. The draft guidelines envisage arming Air India’s airport managers with more powers to deal directly with unruly passengers, while hefty fines of up to Rs 15 lakh have also been proposed to be levied on passengers who delay flight operations. “Recent incidents of unruly behaviour and assault on AI employees by passengers (whether VIP or otherwise) have caused severe damage to the morale of the employees besides negative publicity to Air India,” an airlines source said. “Even a hotel on the roadside has a board ‘Right of Admission Reserved’. A waiver would have meant that a plea filed by Cyrus Mistry’s family-owned companies alleging acts of oppression of minority shareholders and mismanagement by Tata Sons would have been heard on merit. The petition against Tata Sons and Ratan Tata among others was filed last December two months after the corporate behemoth suddenly removed Mistry as its chairman. Pence said that his country’s “era of strategic patience” with North Korea is over and warned Pyongyang not to test the resolve of the US, Yonhap news agency reported. Earlier in the day, Pence visited the Korean demilitarised zone (DMZ), which he described as the “frontier of freedom”, according to the report. The DMZ is the highly-fortified de facto border between North and South Korea. South Korea’s acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn hailed the early deployment of the controversial US missile defence system (known as THAAD) designed to protect against threats from North Korea. Pence said he was disappointed that China had taken retaliatory actions against South Korea in response to the move. Pence said on Monday that Trump was “very hopeful that China will take actions to bring about a change of policy in North Korea. NEW YORK, APR 17 (PTI): Pakistan should use diplomacy and not “proxies” that engage in violence to pursue its interests in Afghanistan and elsewhere, US National Security Adviser Lt Gen H R McMaster has said as he criticised the Pakistani leadership for selectively targeting terror groups. McMaster in an interview to Afghan television channel ToloNews appeared to take a “tougher line” on Pakistan, which has been accused of using the Taliban as a proxy force and giving its leaders sanctuary. “As all of us have hoped for many, many years — we have hoped that Pakistani leaders will understand that it is in their interest to go after these groups less selectively than they have in the past,” McMaster said during his latest visit to the war-torn country, according to a report in The New York Times. “The best way to pursue their interests in Afghanistan and elsewhere is through the use of diplomacy, and not through the use of proxies that engage in violence,” it quoted him as saying.
S Korea’s ex-president indicted for bribery
SEOUL, APR 17 (AFP): Ousted South Korean President Park Geun-Hye was today charged with bribery involving millions of dollars over the massive corruption and influence-peddling scandal that brought her down. Park, whose impeachment was confirmed by Seoul’s top court last month, is at the centre of a sprawling graft investigation, which has also implicated top businessmen and brought millions of people onto the streets. The former leader, already detained at a centre near Seoul, also faces charges of abusing her powers and leaking state secrets, Seoul prosecutors probing the scandal said in a statement. “We have formally charged Park... with multiple offences including abuse of power, coercion, bribery and leaking state secrets,” they said after wrapping up the months-long investigation. Park is accused of colluding with her confidante at the heart of the scandal, Choi Soon-sil, who is already on trial for coercing local conglomerates into donating a total of 77.4 billion won (USD 68 million)

contested campaign, Erdogan was on Monday to chair a cabinet meeting at his presidential palace, Turkish media said. Erdogan declared that Turkey’s had made a “historic” decision and appeared standing on top of a bus in front of thousands of cheering supporters outside his Huber Palace Istanbul residence on the shores of the Bosphorus. But the opposition were not content to rest on their better-than-expected performance despite a lopsided campaign in which the ‘Yes’ camp enjoyed vastly greater resources and dominated the airwaves. Both the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) and the proKurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) said they would appeal the results from most of the ballot boxes due to alleged violations.

With the opposition crying foul over alleged violations, all eyes will be on Monday’s announcement by international observers from the OSCE and the Council of Europe who will give their initial assessment of the vote. “On April 17, we have woken up to a new Turkey,” wrote the pro-government Hurriyet columnist Abdulkadir Selvi. “The ‘Yes’ was victorious but the people have sent messages to the government and opposition that need to be carefully considered.” The new system is due to come into effect after elections in November 2019. Erdogan celebrates referendum win
I S TA N B U L , A P R 1 7 (AFP): Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was today celebrating a narrow win in a referendum giving him sweeping new powers that exposed bitter divisions in Turkey and left incensed rivals demanding a major recount. The referendum was seen as crucial not just for shaping the political system of Turkey but also the future strategic direction of a nation that has been a NATO member since 1952 and an EU hopeful for half a century. The ‘Yes’ camp won 51.41 per cent in Sunday’s referendum on a new presidential system and ‘No’ 48.59, according to nearcomplete results released by the election authorities. But Erdogan’s victory was far narrower than expected, emerging only after several nail-biting hours late Sunday which saw the ‘No’
to two non-profit foundations. Choi allegedly used some of the donations for personal gain. Park is also accused of offering policy favours to top businessmen who enriched Choi, including Samsung heir Lee Jae-Yong who was arrested earlier and is also on trial for bribery.

SEOUL, APR 17 (IANS): US Vice President Mike Pence on Monday warned North Korea against testing America’s mettle with its sabre-rattling, saying Washington will defeat any use of military force with an “overwhelming and effective” response. During a press conference with South Korea’s Acting President and Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn, Pence also reassured South Korea that Washington’s security commitment to its Asian ally is “ironclad and immutable”. “North Korea will do well not to test his (Trump’s) resolve or strength of the armed forces of the US in

In Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said he expects Washington to refrain from taking unilateral steps towards North Korea, Russia’s Tass news agency reported. “If the US Vice President meant that Washington could unilaterally use military force, then it is a risky road,” Lavrov said, referring to Pence’s comment that the “era of strategic patience is over”. Lavrov also said North Korea’s adventurous missile launches are unacceptable as they are a violation of the UN Security Council’s resolutions. “But that does not mean that others can violate international law in response and use military force,” he said, according to Tass. Ailing Johnson claims ATP Houston title
LOS ANGELES, Apr 17 (Agencies): Fourthseeded American Steve Johnson shook off cramps and fought his way to a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7/5) over Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci in the Houston ATP final on Sunday. Johnson, who arrived in Houston after a US Davis Cup tie in Australia, won his second career ATP title, and his first on home soil. Eighth-seeded Bellucci was vying to become the first player since 2004 to win five three-set matches en route to an ATP singles title. B u t Jo h n s o n w a s quickly down in the third
set, surrendering an opening service game that included back-to-back double faults. As Johnson’s legs began to cramp as he trailed 4-2, it appeared the American was on his way out. In a bid to keep the points short Johnson loaded up his forehands. He gave himself a break chance with a passing winner and broke Bellucci on his way to levelling the set at 4-4. Although the cramps intensified, Johnson held on to force the tiebreaker in which he built a 6/3 lead. Bellucci saved two match points before Johnson sealed the win.

M a d r i d, A p r 1 7 ( A g e n c i e s ) : To n y Adams lost his first game in charge of Granada after Celta Vigo claimed a 3-0 win in Sunday’s La Liga clash. On-loan Fulham striker
Adams gestured to his men frantically from the touchline in hope of a response. After the break, whatever messaged had been conveyed back to the players appeared to do the trick, as his side looked far more urgent, as Andreas Pereira grew into the game. Uche Agbo smashed an effort onto the underside of the crossbar, as the hosts began to turn on the pressure, but it was as close as they would get before Celta turned on the style. After a free-kick was awarded outside the area, Diaz stood over the ball, before curling a peach of a strike into the top corner, despite the best efforts of Ochoa. Minutes later, Granada had completely imploded, as Bongonda sprinted clear and his strike was well hit, but cannoned off the post and into Beauvue, who got the goal his performance deserved - which condemned Granada to their 20th league defeat of a woeful campaign.

produced a moment of brilliance when he curled a fantastic free-kick over the wall and into the top corner after 73 minutes. Then, just three minutes later, Claude Beauvue was on hand to tap in from closerange, after Theo Bongonda hammered the inside of the post with a stinging drive. Former Arsenal and England captain Adams was appointed manager on Monday, replacing the sacked Lucas Alcaraz, with Granada 19th in La Liga. It was Granada who started brightly, the best chance falling to Ezequiel Ponce, but his shot was poor and wide of the mark. Eleven different nationalities made up the Granada starting team and a breakdown in communication was obvious, when Wakaso Murbarak lost a challenge and Beauvue slid a ball into the path of Jozabed and the striker’s deft finish was expertly taken. It was a scrappy game, as the animated

The observations came when the counsel for the apex courtappointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) sought a hearing on the interim plea seeking clarification on whether persons, who are rendered ineligible to hold posts in cricket bodies as per the July 18, 2016 judgement, can be nominated as BCCI representative to take part in the ICC meeting. Sunil Narine and Nathan Coulter-Nile controlled bowling effort to restrict Delhi to 168 for seven, and then Pathan (59) and Pandey (69 not out) anchored the chase to perfection as they won with a ball to spare. It went down to the wire in the end with KKR needing nine runs from the last over. The first two balls from Amit Mishra resulted in dots as well as a wicket. With the third ball yielding a run, Pandey got to the strike and straight away hit a much-needed six to KKR’s relief. He eventually sealed it off in style with one ball remaining. Chasing a modest 169 for victory , Kolkata lost three quick wickets to be reeling at 21 for three before Pathan and Pandey joined hands to put on a crucial 110-run stand off just 72 balls for the fourth wicket. But after Pathan’s dismissal, Daredevils had their chances but KKR managed to have the last laugh. Pandey continued and remained unbeaten off 49 balls studded with four fours and three sixes.
ITF ‘unaware’ of Sharapova drug use Los Angeles, Apr 17 (Agencies): The I n t e r n a t i o n a l Te n n i s Federation (ITF) has denied knowing Maria Sharapova was using meldonium prior to her positive test. Sharapova has criticised the ITF for not making her aware meldonium had been added to the banned list from the start of 2016. The organisation has now responded by insisting they could not have known she used it as all samples taken by the WADA were anonymous. A statement said, “The ITF denies any knowledge of Maria Sharapova’s use of meldonium at any time prior to her positive test for the substance during the 2016 Australian Open. Meldonium was par t of WADA’s monitoring programme in 2015 prior to its addition to the prohibited list in 2016.” “However, all samples that were analysed for the purposes of that programme were kept anonymous. “Any such sample could not be associated with a particular player and the results of the monitoring prog ramme were not shared with anti-doping organisations until after Ms. Sharapova’s positive test.”
Earlier, Delhi reached a decent total riding on a late cameo by Rishabh Pant even as Coulter-Nile and Narine managed to restrict the hosts with their superb bowling. Off to a blazing start after opting to bat, Sanju Samson and Sam Billings laid a solid platform for Delhi with a quick 53-run opening stand but after the two got dismissed, KKR bowlers led by CoulterNile dominated the middle overs to put a leash on the increasing run-rate. But it was the young Pant, who smashed 38 off 16 balls to take the team past 160-run mark. It was the 17th over bowled by Umesh Yadav, which yielded 26 runs. Pant launched into a furious assault hitting him for three sixes and two fours in that over. Coulter-Nile was the pick of the Kolkata bowlers, finishing with impressive figures of three for 22, while Narine chipped in with economical one for 20. 2018 Winter Olympics torch relay to begin in November SEO U L , A p r 1 7 (Agencies): The torch relay for next year’s Winter Olympics will begin in South Korea in November and travel 2,018 kilometres around the country before arriving in Pyeongchang to mark the start of the February 9-25 Games, organisers said on Monday. The flame will be lit in Olympia, Greece on October 24 before coming to Korea for the domestic relay. It would then be taken through 17 cities and provinces by 7,500 torchbearers, beginning on November 1 - the 100day countdown to the Games, POCOG said in a statement. The identity of the final torchbearer has not been revealed yet but it would be a huge surprise if figure skater Kim Yuna does not light the cauldron to start Asia’s first Winter Games outside of Japan. Kim, who almost single-handedly raised the profile of winter sports in South Korea, won gold at the Vancouver Games in 2010 and a controversial silver in Sochi four years later before retiring from the sport. She was also a torchbearer at the 2006 and 2010 Games and said the experience would create

The funds are in addition to the 33.7 billion won the government had already set aside for athlete training and preparation. Leicester defender Morgan fit to face Atletico Leicester, Apr 17 (IANS): English football champions Leicester City trained on Monday for the second leg of the Champions League quar ter-finals against Atletico Madrid at the King Power stadium, as central defender Wes Morgan as well as Yohan Benalouane attended the training session after recovering from injuries. However, Leicester coach Craig Shakespeare will be dealing with problems in the midfield and in attack with the absence of Nampalys Mendy and Islam Slimani, reports Efe. Although Morgan missed the last six games with his teammates due to back pain, he showed up for Monday’s training session. Yohan Benalouane, who could not finish Saturday’s Premier League game against Cr ystal Palace, also made it to the training field. The first leg at Madrid ended in a 0-1 defeat for the Foxes. This is perhaps a reminder that they are on the verge of writing history if they manage to make a comeback and qualify for the semi-finals.
Harden powers Rockets past Thunder
James Harden of the Houston Rockets drives past Enes Kanter of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
WASHINGTON, Apr 17 (Agencies): James Harden scored 37 points as the Houston Rockets routed Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder 118-87 in the opening game of their NBA playoff series on Sunday. Harden outclassed
fellow MVP candidate Westbrook also delivering nine assists and seven rebounds for the Rockets who take a 1-0 lead into game two on Wednesday. Westbrook tallied 22 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists but he also made nine turnovers
and missed 17 of 23 shot attempts. Harden and Westbrook are considered the frontrunners in the league MVP race. T h e Ro c k e t s h e l d Westbrook to just seven points in the second half as they stretched a five-point halftime lead to 33 points. As good as Harden was Sunday he also got plenty of help from a strong supporting cast. Patrick Beverley scored a postseason career high 21 points while Nene chipped in 15 points off the bench for Houston. Beverley also shut down Westbrook defensively when it mattered the most. Houston shot 49.5 percent from the floor while Oklahoma City shot 37 percent from the field. Elsewhere, the Golden State Warriors clamped down in the fourth quarter to pull away to a 121-109 victory over the Portland
Trail Blazers in game one of their series. Golden State, aiming to get back to the NBA finals for a third straight year and regain the crown they surrendered last season to the Cleveland Cavaliers, had 32 points from Kevin Durant in his first playoff game as a Warrior. Stephen Curry added 29. Draymond Green was everywhere, finishing with 19 points, 12 rebounds, nine assists, five blocked shots and three steals for the Warriors. Golden State withstood 75 combined points from the Trail Blazers duo of Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum to triumph in a game that saw 22 lead changes. Durant, acquired as a free agent after the Warriors’ loss to the Cavs in last year’s finals, connected on 12 of 20 shots and also pulled down 10 rebounds. Game two of the series, a rematch of a Western Conference semi-final last season, is on Wednesday.
