NL Cong to counter BJP’s agenda
DIMAPUR, APR 15 (NPN): Recently formed Nagaland Congress (NC) party, a break-away of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), has raised its pitch against communalism and vowing to defend Christian faith and practices as a matter of conviction as well as Constitutional rights. A press note by NC media cell however made its stand clear that it was not against BJP as a political party but was determined to “fight tooth and nail against BJP’s politics of anti-Christianity” since the party (BJP) was all out to promote Hindu. “Whether NPF should continue the marriage with BJP till swamis and yogis are sufficiently born to saffronize Nagaland is best left to supporting people to decide when they can. And in this grave situation million dollar question is whether the Church should remain silent because consequence of silence may fall upon the Church,” NC stated. Taking note of BJP leaders’ public statements that their party was optimistic to form the next gov-
Petrol, diesel prices hiked

The hike comes the on back of a Rs 4.85 per litre reduction in rates of petrol and Rs 3.41 a litre in diesel effected from April 1. Indian Oil Corp (IOC), said price of petrol is being increased by Rs 1.39 per litre, excluding state levies, and that of diesel by Rs 1.04 (excluding state levies) with effect from midnight tonight. Shortage of IAS, IPS and IFS officers
NEW DELHI, APR 15 (NPN): As per information tabled in the parliament recently, there is an overall shortage of almost 22% in the sanctioned strength of IAS, IPS and IFS officers. To fill this shortage, the government has increased the annual intake of IAS officers to 180 in the last four years and of IFS officers to 110 and IPS officers 150. The situation is not the same in some states, where upto 32% vacancies exists. For Nagaland the percentage was 73.8% (206/152) while J&K stood at 67.2% (390/262).

ernment in Nagaland, NC however questioned-- “how can BJP have hope of this possibility in the state of Nagaland for Christ, when anti Christianity movement has reached our doorstep, unless they have rightly observed the accommodative spirit of NPF on one side and tepid attitude of church bodies on other side?” Maintaining that a small state like Nagaland may be seen as an insignificant state, yet, NC said Nagaland was now seemingly considered a thorn in the body politics of future Hindu Rashtra. In this regard, NC asked as to who could disprove that Nagaland was under threat? NC said BJP, intoxicated with overwhelming electoral support and without formidable opposition from any corner, was hell bound to make India a Hindu Rashtra- one nation, one culture, one diet, one religion. NC alleged that for BJP there cannot be a Christian state, for that matter no Christian in Hindu Rashtra. “Either we are Indian and not Christian or
Christian and not Indian. This, they are determined to fulfil by 2021,” Nagaland Congress added. Further hitting out at BJP, NC said imposition of Good Governance Day on Christmas Day, Judges Day and now Digital India Day on Good Friday and Yoga Day on Father’s Day, was clear demonstration of BJP’s total contempt towards Christianity and Christian community of India. It said the state government’s belated decisions not to observe these occasions on given date clashing with Christian calendar after firm protest made by Mizoram, Meghalaya and even Arunachal Pradesh clearly indicated deep-rooted marriage between NPF & BJP. Non-observance of these occasions on given date was non issue, however, NC said the core issue was BJP’s declared position to phase out Christianity in a new India and NPF’s unconcealed position not to antagonize BJP. I n c i d e n t a l l y, N C pointed out that NPF was “illogically even more na-
NE to witness heavy rains; cyclone likely in Bay of Bengal NEW DELHI, APR 15 (AGENCIES): Not even 24 hours have been passed that the low-pressure area has intensified further into a depression which is much likely to give rains over the North Eastern states of the country. A tropical depression formed on Saturday evening, local time, across the central Bay of Bengal. In general, also Northeast India gets bestowed with good pre-Monsoon showers during this time of the season and with the system approaching towards the state, the rain intensity is further likely to scale up. The depression which is at present seen in the west-southwest of Mayabander in Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India will also fuel in some hefty showers. Heavy squalls with thunderstorms are also likely to lash the region. This depression is seen moving towards the Myanmar coast. Moreover, as per Skymet Weather report, a cyclonic circulation is seen over East Assam and adjoining area. Another trough is also seen extending from the foothills of Uttar Pradesh up to Nagaland across the North Eastern states. In the wake of this, scattered rains are expected to show up in the northeast regions particularly over Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Assam. Skymet Weather further details that these rains are expected to show up during the late afternoon or evening hours as per the nature of pre-Monsoon showers. Moreover, these rains are expected to continue for the next 24 hours. Thereafter, the intensity is predicted to reduce.
tional minded than national parties.” “We are seeing not a convergence but submerged of regionalism into a new brand of Hindu nationalism,” NC stated. Nagaland C accused NPF that it diligently nurtured a tiny lotus in tiny pond all the while although knowing fully that the plant could one day become a thorn in Christian society. “If BJP has grown larger and bolder, it is not by people’s choice, it is NPF’s love marriage with BJP,” NC asserted. NC was apprehensive that whatever trials the state had gone through and broke through in the past, Naga identity, social & religious practices, were now most dangerously put to trial during this dangerous NPF-BJP marriage. “And at no point of time in the past was Article 371A questioned and challenged as daringly done during these three consecutive terms of NPF-led DAN Govt. In so far as religion is concerned NPF might have created a Frankenstein out of BJP,” the Nagaland Congress stated.
Crack visible in BJP- Media slammed for led govt in Manipur reportage on SLP in SC

IMPHAL, APR 15: In what could be described as the first sign of a crack in the one-month old BJPled government in Manipur, the health minister, L Jayentakumar, has submitted his resignation as cabinet minister. Jayentakumar, who has resigned citing interference to his authority, said his position regarding resignation as minister would be known after April 18. The NPP leader submitted his resignation letter to chief minister N Biren Singh on Friday. In his resignation letter, Jayentakumar protested against not consulting him before the suspension of the health director, Dr. O Ibomcha, who was recently placed under suspension from his service by an order of the state department of personnel, the department under chief minister. Jayentakumar alleged that the manner in which the health director was suspended was interference in his work as a minister in-charge of the department. “I may not be able to get visions materialised as expected since there have been so many interference to my authority,” the resignation letter dated April 13 stated. Responding to a volley of questions from media persons on the sideline of a function here today, Jayentakumar said whether he would quit as cabinet minister or not would be confirmed after chief minister, who is currently outside the state, return on April 18. “I would come to you after April 18,” he said. State chief minister, N Biren Singh, is currently in Odisha to attend BJP’s national executive meeting at Bhubaneshwar. “I will meet the chief minister soon after he comes back to Imphal. Before leaving Imphal yesterday (Friday), he (chief minister) called me over phone and asked the reason,” Jayentakumar said.

DIMAPUR, APR 15 (NPN): NMA president, Mrs. Abeiu Meru on April 14, when contacted over mobile by this newspaper, launched a tirade against the media for baseless reporting on various events which she alleged, were done “without consulting NMA”. Further, she said while things had quieted down, the report on the application in the Supreme Court published on April 13, 2017 in this newspaper had stirred up things. Mrs. Meru warned that “if anything happens to the NMA (leaders) then the media will be held responsible”. Again on April 14, a press note was issued by Abeiu Meru (president) and Rosemary Dzüvichü (advisor) along the same charges but with a threat/ intimidation that the Editor of this newspaper would be held responsible, if anything happened to them. What riled the women leaders was the report on April 13, on the application purportedly submitted by the two women leaders, through their counsel(s) for deletion of their names as petitioners from the SLP in the Supreme Court and which was accepted. In the same order, the People’s Union for Civil Liberties
RMSA teachers to launch phase-wise stir DIMAPUR, APR 15 (NPN): With no positive response from state government to its ultimatum, the Nagaland RMSA Teachers Association (NRMSATA) 2016 said they were compelled to boycott three days class from April 17-19 as first phase agitation and continue with poster campaign (phase II) and sit in protest (phase III) until their demands were met. Anguished for misleading with excuses, NRMSATA2016 president Renbemo L Patton and general secretary Kezhothito Keyho said the department had informed them at least four times over a period of five months about their salary being nearly ready to be disbursed, creating a spurious hope for the member to wait only to find in the end, their silence. It said all hopes have run dry and the department’s verbal assurances reduced to good words having no meaning or consequences.
The association has warned the department “not to take the ethical conduct and misinterpret it as a weakness of the association”. It said hardworking teachers had been rewarded with untold hardship, physical exhaustion coupled with financial stress. “Should this trend continue, it would not be long before we take to the streets for bagging for being a sincere teacher,” NRMSATA said. On Service Regularization: NRMSATA reminded the department that as per the guideline/framework of RMSA, all teachers should have to be appointed under State Education department by their respective states on regular basis with same service condition as of the state teachers. NRMSATA said it was a matter of great concern that those appointment made through backdoor and political aid were regularized. However, RMSATA claimed that teachers appointed in
2016 free and fair open competition, fulfilling all prerequisite qualification were deprived of their rights justice by inducting them as purely contractual employees. In this regard, NRMSATA urged the state government to re-examine the matter seriously for Service Regularization of RMSA teachers 2016 at the earliest possible with all fair means. Meanwhile, the association has informed all its members to refrain from joining their duties until further notification. The teachers said that they were ready to face any consequences for what was right and just. The body has also requested all concerned citizens to extend support and co-operation, saying “all these related issues are the root cause of corruption in the society”. It further war ned that NRMSATA would not be held responsible for any unwarranted situation during the course agitations.
India vulnerable to Zika, Ebola; level of preparedness inadequate ‘Level of preparedness is inadequate to protect public health’ NEW DELHI, APR 15(AGENCIES): South Asian nations, including India, are vulnerable to emerging infectious diseases such as Zika and Ebola, and their level of preparedness is inadequate to protect public health, a new health analysis has revealed. An analysis as part of a collection of 12 analyses on health in South Asia published in British Medical Journal (BMJ) found that inadequate surveillance and uneven health system capacity may accelerate the spread of the emerging infectious diseases in the region. The region is already burdened by diseases like tuberculosis, HIV and malaria. “Examining the vulnerability to emerging and growing infectious disease
threats and the capacity to respond to outbreaks, the analysis finds the level of preparedness is inadequate to protect public health,” it said. T h e a n a ly s i s a l s o pointed out that although sporadic cases of dengue infection were seen in many South Asian countries in the 1960s, regular epidemics only occurred in the early 1990s in India and Sri Lanka.
“In India and Sri Lanka, by around 40 years of age 90-95% of adults have been infected with the dengue virus, while 41% have been infected with chikungunya,” the analysis found. It said while noting that anthrax is endemic in large parts of South Asia, that in the border areas of India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, poor vaccination and surveillance have been accompanied by increas-
ing anthrax cases, which prompted Bangladesh to announce a red alert in 2010. Noting that rabies remains endemic in eight countries in South East Asia, with 1.4 billion people at risk, the authors in the analysis said that the region contributes about 45% of global rabies deaths, while the rhetoric on elimination continues to grow. “Brucellosis, bovine tuberculosis, and a range
of food-borne diseases contribute to the morbidity and mortality attributable to zoonotic infections but are struggling to gain the attention of policymakers in the subcontinent, despite it resulting in 150 million illnesses, 175,000 deaths, and 12 million disabilityadjusted life years,” the analysis said. The analysis found that the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus A/ H5N1, which was introduced to the subcontinent in 2005 through wild birds, has since become endemic across large parts of northeast India and Bangladesh, across porous international borders. South Asia is defined by the World Bank as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and is home to a quarter of the world’s population.
(PUCL) through its national secretary, filed for impleadment as petitioners in place of the NMA office bearers. The apex court allowed PUCL petition but subject to the objections and reservation and reply by the respondents. It is to reiterate that this newspaper including other newspapers have been covering the issue both in the assembly and outside since 2005-06 , purely in the interest of providing information to public on the crucial issue of 33% women reservation and the vacillating stand of the government. The issue of 33% women reservation in ULBs in Nagaland in particular, also comes into play with various objections raised by the apex Naga tribe organisations. The issue between the office bearers of NMA and the apex Naga tribes is known to all. Therefore, this newspaper is not accountable for the events that unfolded. It is regretted, that instead of making whatever clarification as the case may be, instead the women leaders chose to shoot the messenger by intimidating the editor and media. If by any report(s) certain people may have been hurt, it was never with any intention but only for the purpose of disseminating news.

JAC, govt talks face uncertain future
Correspondent
IMPHAL, Apr 15: The talks between Joint Action Committee Against AntiTribal Bills (JACATB) and Manipur government face an uncertain future as JACATB Saturday came out with certain points which led to the prevailing uncertainty. Certain ground rules laid down by the state government in the second round of talks negated its earlier positive indications towards demands made by JACATB and the government’s inability to declare August 31 (Tribal Unity Day) as a general holiday were the main reason for the existing deadlock, JACATB stated in a statement. The statement reminded that JAC, after a series of consultations with various sections of the tribal society, participated in the talks after the new government showed its desire to bring an amicable solution to the current impasse. A charter of demand was also submitted to the chief minister on April 2 last and the same was deliberated on April 7. The demands include constitutional safeguard for ancestral tribal territories and development of tribal people, sending an imme-
diate response to repeated queries raised by Union ministry of home affairs regarding the “local adjustments and amendments” rider for extension of Sixth Schedule provisions among others. JAC further demanded a written assurance that no bills affecting the interest as well as the ancestral territories of the indigenous hill tribes shall ever be passed by the Manipur Legislative Assembly unconstitutionally and without prior due consultation of the tribal stakeholders. It also asked for the creation of Lamka district for administrative convenience, restoration of the Manipur Land Revenue & Land Reforms (MLR&LR) Act, 1960 to its original principal Act status and justice for the “Tribal Martyrs” and the injured by declaring August 31 as an annual state holiday on the occasion of Tribal Unity Day. At the first round of preliminary discussion, the chief minister mentioned that with the tripartite talks involving various groups under Suspension of Operations in progress, the state cannot make any commitment or declaration regarding Sixth Schedule. He (chief minister) further pointed out the im-
practicality of restoring the MLR&LR Act, 1960 to its original status. However, he gave a positive indication regarding the feasibility of the other points in the charter of demands and expressed his desire to meet again on April 10, 2017 to finalize on the Memorandum of Understanding, which will then be signed in the presence of a witness from the Ministry of Home Affairs at Lamka on April 12, 2017, the statement said. However, at the second round of discussion (on April 10), to the utter surprise of the JAC-led delegation, “the state government laid down certain ground rules which negated its earlier positive indications towards the JAC’s demands other than those involving compensation and ex-gratia to the Martyrs’ families and the injured.” The government further mentioned its inability to declare August 31 (Tribal Unity Day) as a general holiday in the state. Contrary to various Imphal-based media reports, the demand for a new district was never a priority for the JAC, the statement clarified. With the new BJP-led Government in Manipur showing no intention of rolling back the seven new
districts hastily-created by the previous Congress government, the JAC was in favour of reviewing the district boundaries, and realigning and creating new ones where needed, stated the JAC statement. However, this was never a priority of the JAC. In fact, the demand for creation of Lamka district became a part of the JAC’s charter of demands only after an indication of its possibility by the Manipur government before the preparation of the draft document itself. “It is a customary practice among the Christian tribals to give an honourable burial to the dead, however until and unless the extreme sense of insecurity among the tribal people fuelled by the passing of the three antitribal bills can be mitigated through an amicable and sustainable solution, the burial of the remaining eight tribal martyrs is not our priority,” read the statement. “The three anti-tribal bills are the symptoms while the palpable sense of insecurity among the tribal people is the disease, and the JAC is focusing on finding a cure for the disease while treating the symptoms at the same time,” the statement observed.

BJP cheated people to come to power, Akhilesh alleges
Lu c k n ow, A p r 1 5 (IANS): For mer Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party (SP) President Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of cheating the people to win power in the state. Addressing a press conference, the 44-year-old leader also alleged that the electronic voting machines (EVMs) were manipulated and tampered to favour the BJP in the state assembly elections. “I met lots of party workers and supporters, who told me that they were bewildered over the victory of BJP, as many of them had pressed the button against SP symbol,” he said, adding that people had lost faith in EVMs. He also demanded that all future polls in the state be held through the traditional ballot papers method. The SP also started a membership drive from Saturday. Akhilesh Yadav said the party had decided to involve all sections of the society in party work. He also accused the state’s Yogi Adityanath government of taking credit for the work done by his government in the past. “We worked a lot to change the power scenario in state, got many sub-stations made and installed new transformers,” he said
CBSE files FIR against publisher for ‘sexist’ text CHANDIGARH: Taking strong exception of the depiction of women in a physical education book for Class XII, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has filed an FIR against the publisher under Section 6 (indecent representation of women (Prohibition) Act 1986). Soon after facing flak over the text which claimed 36-24-36 is the best figure for females, the Board issued a statement clarifying that the Board had not prescribed the book. The book is published by New Saraswati House (India) Pvt Ltd, New Delhi, and written by Dr VK Sharma, professor, department of physical education, DAV College, Cheeka (Kaithal) Haryana. The Board also set up a committee, which reviewed the content and said that the book is not in consonance with the spirit of the syllabus and the text in question has no context.
“I had only said that if Prime Minister’s picture will be there, then the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister’s should also be there,” he said.
Stop crying foul over EVMs: BJP to SP Akhilesh Yadav while pointing out that the present BJP government was now taking credit for all this. He also alleged that there was law and order failure in the state under the watch of the Chief Minister and said that only recently the BJP workers had bashed up police officials in Kannauj. “People are being set afire alive, rapes have increased and the state government is doing nothing,” Yadav said pointing out how during the SP government even a small crime was blown out of proportions to defame it. Akhilesh Yadav also rebutted the charges levelled by Union Power Minister Piyush Goel on Friday that Uttar Pradesh was deprived of the benefits of many central government-aided schemes, including “Power for All”, as he wanted his picture to be displayed over everything relating to the schemes.
Instead of crying foul over the electronic voting machines (EVMs), the Samajwadi Party should realise that people of Uttar Pradesh have rejected it, the BJP said on Saturday, retorting to SP chief Akhilesh Yadav’s demand for going back to ballot papers+ for holding elections. The BJP, which decimated opposition to secure a thumping majority in UP assembly polls+ recently, said it seemed that the former chief minister does not have any faith either in the EVMs or the mandate of the state’s voters. “It seems that Akhilesh Yadav does not have any faith in the EVMs (electronic voting machines), the mandate of the people of UP, his father (SP patron Mulayam Singh Yadav) or his uncle (former Shivpal Singh Yadav),” BJP’s UP unit spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi told PTI. He said that instead of crying foul over the EVMs, the SP should try to come to terms with the reality that the people of the state have rejected it.
Kashmir sees sharp decline in tourists
SRINAGAR: Kashmir has seen a sharp decline in tourists this year owing to the turbulent political situation, with just about 20 per cent occupancy in hotels and very few advance bookings even as the peak season has started. Hoteliers and travel agents said that if the situation does not improve, many of them may be forced to look for another business. “The situation is going from bad to worse. We have just 15-20 per cent occupancy, down from 7080 per cent a year ago. The political uncertainty and continued violence leaves no scope for this sector,” Javed Burza, president of Kashmir Hotel and Restaurant Owners Federation, told ET. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had in his recent speech at Udhampur in Jammu asked the youth of Kashmir to choose between tourism and terrorism. J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti also said that militancy and terrorism can be tackled with tourism. However, the fresh bout of violence in the recent by-election appear to have dimmed the prospects for this season. This comes amid the shadow of five months of protests in the wake of the killing of militant Burhan Wani last year, during which more than 95 civilians were killed, 15,000 injured and
8,000 arrested. “Why were elections in south Kashmir postponed till May, which is again peak season?” asked Burza. “The violence on election day has hampered all the chances of bookings even in May or June. If the government is serious about tourism, any sort of elections should take place after autumn.” One of the busiest tourist destinations during summer is Pahalgam in southern Kashmir, which is also one of the routes to reach Amarnath cave. Although tourists from nearby Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand have started coming, people familiar with the matter said that a diplomat from one of these countries along with his relatives and friends was caught in the protests in Srinagar on Thursday, further dampening the chances of more arrivals from these countries. “Tourism is not picking up. Nobody is promoting Kashmir in India from where a huge rush could have been expected during summer holidays,” said Muhammad Ibrahim Siah, president of the Travel Agents Society of Kashmir. “The political statements from the governments further create fear and confusion among potential tourists.” In 2016, Kashmir had suffered a 55 per cent decline over the previous year to 403, 442 tourists.
Parrikar denies quitting Centre over Kashmir
Panaji, Apr 15 (IANS): Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday denied media reports that he quit as Defence Minister due to “pressure” over the Kashmir issue, but Opposition parties lashed out at the BJP leader, accusing him of being “anti-national” and a “bhagoda” (deserter). All India Congress Committee Secretary Girish Chodankar said the only thing Parrikar had learnt from Pakistan, during his stint as Defence Minister, was staging coups, referring to the ‘coup’ staged by the BJP, which upstaged the Congress to come to power in Goa last month. “The Congress believes that securing the borders of the country are more important that becoming Chief Minister of Goa. Parrikar’s return to Goa is an ‘anti-national’ act. He has clearly run away from the Defence Ministry. In fact, Parrikar was the worst Defence Minister India has ever had,” Chodankar told reporters at a press conference in Panaji at the party’s
Manohar Parrikar state headquarters. “The only thing Parrikar has learnt from Pakistan as Defence Minister is how to stage coups, which are popular in Pakistan, where the army dethrones popularly elected governments. No wonder Parrikar staged a coup in Goa, where he led the BJP to power using unfair means,” Chodankar said. Reports in a section of the media on Friday quoted Parrikar as saying that he had quit his sensitive central ministry brief because of pressures generated by the Kashmir crisis, among other issues. Parrikar on Saturday
took to Twitter to post a clarification, saying the news report was “factually incorrect”. The BJP media cell in Goa said the Chief Minister had been misquoted. “This is to clarify that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has never given any such statement that he had pressure of any sort working as Defence Minister,” a statement issued by the Goa BJP media cell stated, adding that the senior BJP leader was “willing to take on any challenge in Goa and also at the national level”. The Aam Aadmi Party in a statement issued here called Parrikar a “self-admitted bhagoda”. “Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s claim in public that it was the pressure of running the Defence Ministry, in particular the vexed Kashmir issue, that got to him and facilitated his grabbing the opportunity to return to Goa politics is a self-admission that he is a bhagoda,” the AAP said in a statement.
Cong flays Parrikar
The Congress on Saturday condemned Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s comments wherein he said that discussions, especially in media, end up derailing objectives. “Parrikar is behaving like a dictator when he says that discussions are not important, in fact detrimental to achieving objectives. In a democracy, all voices need to be heard. You cannot just push things without any discussion,” Congress Secretary Girish Chodankar told the media here. Speaking at the 126th birth anniversary celebrations of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar here on Friday, Parrikar said: “There are some things where discussions should be minimum... Discussions can be a spoiler. Today, the media was asking me about some issues. I told them -- do you want this thing to happen, or do you want it to become news.”
Contrary to PM Modi’s claims, Indian economy stagnant: Cong
New Delhi, Apr 15 (IANS): The Congress on Saturday said contrary to claims by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Indian economy was stagnant and investments were not coming. Citing Reserve Bank of India data, party leader and former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh said that in 2016-17, bank credit grew by 5 per cent - the lowest in 60 years, while the plant load factor - a measure of capacity utilisation - stood at 60 per cent, the lowest in 15 years. “Lowest increase in bank credit for the last 60 years, lowest plant load factor in the last 15 years and lowest addition to employment in the organised sector in recent years, this is the reality.

Following the appeal, Diep, who is Executive Director, Centre for Peace and Secular Studies, Lahore, has agreed to initiate a campaign in her country to ensure a proper trial for Jadhav, who hails from Mumbai, according to him. Mathai pointed out how Jadhav was not arrested on Pakistani territory but kidnapped by some militant outfits working in tandem with the current (Pakistan) regime, and that all the military courts were allegedly a sham which did not adhere to principles of natural justice.
“In the first two years of Modi government, only 4.4 lakh jobs were created in the organised sector as opposed to 21 lakh jobs created during the first two years of the UPA-II government,” said Ramesh. “These indicators, which are all government figures, belie the Prime Minister’s repeated claims

Ramesh said lack of investments was a big threat faced by the economy and said both Modi and his Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had no answers for the problems of the economy. “There is no point in the Prime Minister or the Finance Minister taking refuge in GDP growth. They are meaningless. The world no longer believes India’s GDP numbers,” he said. “The condition of the economy is matter of serious concern and the government must look into the challenges faced by the economy,” he added.

Triumphant over death
A
fter Christ was crucified and died at the cross on Calvary on Good Friday, His body was entombed. He rose from the death on the third day (Resurrection Day) on Sunday. Christ’s death and resurrection fulfilled God’ promise and a prophesy foretold in the bible thousands of years before His birth. It also is the foundation upon which the Christian faith is based. Had Christ not been resurrected, the basis of Christianity would have been as meaningless and like any other religion. The importance of the resurrection is not only about the triumph of Jesus against the powers of darkness but it is the way for those who choose to follow Christ. When Christ resurrected, it was not about Easter. According to writers, Easter was never used in the original Scriptures, nor is it ever associated biblically with the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. However, one English translation of the Bible does use the word in the old King James Version which translated Acts 12:4 by describing the Jewish Passover as Easter. The name “Easter” originated with the names of an ancient goddess and god. Christ rose from the dead on the third day after his burial in a tomb and so what should have been called Resurrection Sunday was subsequently accepted as Easter Sunday. Some have suggested that these postresurrection appearances of Christ were only visions or hallucinations, or perhaps a case of mistaken identity. But visions and hallucinations don’t occur repeatedly like this, to individuals and to groups, indoors and outdoors. And certainly the disciples could recognize the One who had been with them every day for more than three years. God’s unconditional love was so great, He sent Jesus to pay the ransom for salvation. Jesus loved the Father and was obedient to death and which is also the essence of what Agape means. Having fulfilled the mission through His death and resurrection, Christ received the all powers of God. The resurrection of Jesus Christ guarantees the resurrection of every saint, no matter what happens to the body. It is free but to receive it, repentance is a pre-requisite. That is the promise of Scripture. And this then is unarguably the single greatest event in the history of the world. For many claiming to be Christians the daily tests and trials should be welcomed as they strengthen faith. The Bible also says that in the last days, people will be lukewarm and many ensnared by knowledge which will abound. In the last days people will run to and fro about the face of the Earth and will also be proud of their vast knowledge. The last days till the second coming will also witness hedonism and disinclination to hear God’s truth and instead lured towards human truth. Indeed Christians live in perilous times where the very basis of their faith is being tested and tried. This had happened even during Christ’s time “and we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” (Rom.8:28-32)
DailyDevotion The Failure To Pay Close Attention
The high places were not removed from Israel. Nevertheless the heart of Asa was loyal all his days. —2 Chronicles 15:17 Asa was not completely obedient in the outward, visible areas of his life. He was obedient in what he considered the most important areas, but he was not entirely right. Beware of ever thinking, “Oh, that thing in my life doesn’t matter much.” The fact that it doesn’t matter much to you may mean that it matters a great deal to God. Nothing should be considered a trivial matter by a child of God. How much longer are we going to prevent God from teaching us even one thing? But He keeps trying to teach us and He never loses patience. You say, “I know I am right with God”— yet the “high places” still remain in your life. There is still an area of disobedience. Do you protest that your heart is right with God, and yet there is something in your life He causes you to doubt? Whenever God causes a doubt about something, stop it immediately, no matter what it may be. Nothing in our lives is a mere insignificant detail to God. Are there some things regarding your physical or intellectual life to which you have been paying no attention at all? If so, you may think you are all correct in the important areas, but you are careless— you are failing to concentrate or to focus properly. You no more need a day off from spiritual concentration on matters in your life than your heart needs a day off from beating. As you cannot take a day off morally and remain moral, neither can you take a day off spiritually and remain spiritual. God wants you to be entirely His, and it requires paying close attention to keep yourself fit. It also takes a tremendous amount of time. Yet some of us expect to rise above all of our problems, going from one mountaintop experience to another, with only a few minutes’ effort.

Post-mortem
Looking behind the cross and Easter: The triumph of truth and life the post calvary commission C F or over 2000 thousand years, mankind has been only looking at the frontal part of the cross at Calvary. An indeed man cannot be blamed for looking so because grace forgiveness and everlasting life radiates from that front part of the cross into a world of darkness, evil and eternal death. Man cannot be blamed because from that broken body of Christ, radiant light shoots forth peace into a war torn world and hope for a universe that is covered with the dust of death. And I too join the heavenly host and all the saved of earth in shouting Hallelujah for all that Christ has done for me on Calvary. But has any one ever bothered to look behind that cross at Golgotha to look at the other side where the body of Jesus is not hanging? If we are to look carefully and think very deeply, perhaps that is where we should be hanging. Hanging there not in order to save ourselves from death; but hanging there, to die to ourselves and our egos. After all, did Jesus not tell us that all those who would follow him must take up their own cross and follow him? And is the cross not the symbol of death? Come Easter season, everyone of us talks about “LIFE after DEATH” in connection with Calvary and the resurrection. But is Calvary just a message about life after death? Does Calvary have nothing to say about DEATH while still ALIVE? Indeed, Jesus himself had again and again taught us about the necessity of death to self while still alive, so that we can have an abundant life both here on earth as well as in the next life (Lk.10:2930). He had even said:”For whosoever will save his own life shall lose it; and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it” (Matt.16:25). Indeed, as W. Tozer had aptly put it: “When Jesus calls us; he bids us, Come and die.” As for Jesus’death, we all know that he died so that we might have eternal life (Jn. 3:16). But having received the guarantee of that eternal life, are we not next called to die to ourselves so that others may also have benefits from his death? And what are those benefits? The post calvary commission After his death on Calvary and resurrection, Jesus did not command us to keep looking up at the cross for our future salvation and do nothing else in our entire lifetime. No, he instead directed us to the world and gave us a commission to go and “teach all the nations, to observe all the things that he had taught us and the Disciples (Matt. 28: 19, 20). And we must here take note of the three words that Jesus taught us to teach the nations. The three words are: “All the Things.” Now “all the things” means not just one thing but “all the things” that he had taught us. The next question naturally would be, what are “all the things” that he has taught us? The obvious answer is- THE ENTIRE BIBLE! This is because Jesus did not teach us only from Isaiah chapter 53 where the scriptures foretells us about the crucifixion of Christ for our physical and spiritual salvation. In fact, though we cannot go into details here, in his 30 or so years of ministry on earth, he taught us from the entire Bible with the exception of the Epistles (which were
written after his ascension to heaven). He himself also told his disciples that all the scriptures had foretold about him, and that he had come to fulfill all those foretold prophesies about him (Lk.24:44;Jn.5:39). As for his teachings, he did all these teachings, in the villages, synagogues, in the Temple and even on the mountains and seashores all his life (Matt. 4:23; 9:35; Mk. 14:49 etc). In his teachings, he taught the people many things like the fact that he had not come to abolish the Law of Moses but that he had come to fulfill it. He also told them that not even one jot or title from the law would be removed until the end of the earth (Matt. 5:18). He also condemned the Scribes and Pharisees for keeping the outward forms of religion but ignoring the weightier matters of the law which were Justice, mercy and faith (Matt.23:23). Yes, in thirty years of ministry, he taught the people and also all of us many many things about God’s nature and his ways. But on the theme of this Post Calvary Commission, I want to end by highlighting one particular point which is today very relevant for Nagas who have been suffering under foreign occupation for the past 70 long years. But here, in case someone would object to my mixing politics with Calvary, yes, I know that during his trial, Jesus had replied Pilate that His kingdom was not of this world. But what then was his kingdom and where is it? Here, if we want to know what and where his kingdom is, we can go to Ephesians 1:20- 23 and see. In these verses, Paul after describing the believer’s position in Christ, gives us a glimpse of Jesus’ kingdom in the heavens in the following words: “Which he (God) wrought in Christ when he raised him from the dead and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in that which is to come.” Jesus’ kingdom then is a kingdom in heaven which is far above all the kingdoms of this world. From the scriptures we also discover that besides Paul, Stephan and John were also shown glimpses of this heavenly kingdom of Christ in heaven (Act.7:55, Rev. 4:1-3 etc). Also in contrast to this heavenly kingdom, during Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness, the Devil took him up to the top of a high mountain and after showing him all the glory of the earthly kingdoms, tempted him to bow down and worship him in exchange for authority and rulership over all those earthly kingdoms. Jesus of course refused the offer because he did not come to earth in order to establish a political kingdom in this world. But the important thing to be remembered here is the fact that Jesus wants his kingdom principles to rule in the kingdoms of the world. That is why he taught us to pray: “They will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”(Matt.6:10). To put it in Munroe’s beautiful words: “The ultimate goal of God the creator was to colonize earth with heaven and establish it as a visible territory of an invisible world.” In this context, Calvary was the gateway for the re- establishment of this invisible kingdom of
God on this visible earth. This earthly kingdom of man which was originally planned by God for man to have dominion over it was usurped by the devil when man fell in the Garden of Eden. This original plan of God was clearly stated in Genes 1:26 where God had said: “Let us make man in our image, after our own likeness and let THEM have dominion… over all the earth, and every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.” But after the fall, the rulership of this earthly kingdom of man was transferred to Satan so that in the temptation, he could show Jesus the glory of all the kingdoms of earth and boast: “All these things will I give thee, if thou will fall down and worship me (Matt. 4:9). In the context of this original plan of God and its restoration, we must clearly understand that Calvary was NOT the restoration of something that had gone wrong in heaven. On the contrary, Calvary is the restoration of something that had gone very wrong on earth. One aspect of the victory of Calvary is the restoration back to man, the ruler ship of this world through Jesus’ victory on the cross. In this restoration work, Jesus had clearly declared that the Prince of this earth had been overthrown. For example, in Jn. 12:31 he had said: “Now is the judgment of this world (not heaven); now shall the Prince of this earth be cast out.” Again in Jn. 16:33, he said: “…be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” He also assured us in 1 Jn. 4:4:”Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” Then lastly, in Mathew 28:18-19 he commissioned us with the following words:” All authority is given unto me in heaven and on earth. Go ye therefore and teach all nations…teaching them to observe whatsoever I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the age.” In the Post Calvary Commission, besides the preaching of the gospel, we are also therefore, commissioned to re-conquer the world for God’s glory and rule of his righteousness. We are empowered to do this by the power in us which is greater than the power that is in the world. (See for example Lk. 4:16-21) Christian saints all down through the ages have turned their worlds upside down with the power of the gospel. They are man like Wilberforce who abolished slavery in England and even America. He did this because slavery was contrary to what Jesus had taught us. Another example was General William Booth who brought security and equality to the exploited mass laborers during England’s finest as well as darkest hour of the industrial revolution. Then coming closer to our own times, Martin Luther King abolished segregation and racism in America because it was contrary to the kingdom of God principles. The list of Christian heroes who were fired by the Post Calvary Commission and brought great religious, economic, racial and political salvations to the world is countless. What about you? What have you done in response to Calvary’s victorious cry of Jesus where he had declared: IT IS FINISHED. Today, there are many evil things going on in Nagaland. And in this -perhaps-her darkest hour; what will you do for your Nagaland? Kaka D. Iralu
hristianity was born in the grave. A plant that sprouts in the fire does not fade in the sunlight; and that which is born in the tomb does not disintegrate at death. Easter powerfully proclaims: “you can put truth in a grave, but it won’t stay there.’ The day of the resurrection is the birthday of our Christian faith. It is the celebration of the death of death, the beginning of life eternal. Easter is the good news, which has forever changed the course of history and provided inspiration for countless millions throughout the world. It is the conquest of the ultimate enemy of life – death. Victory over ultimate annihilation, the resurrection is a mystery of faith, which speaks of another far more wonderful mystery - that of the love of God incarnated in the mystery of Jesus. If Christmas is the gift of love, Easter is the gift of life. The feast of Christmas did not even exist for the first two centuries of the Church’s life! But Christianity is inconceivable without Easter. Easter is a divine act that has happened in human history, in space and time. The birth of Christ inaugurated a new history while his rising from the dead installed a new hope. Resurrection is beyond the calculation of all reason and knowledge, beyond the boundary of reality. It belongs at once to the realm of the spirit and matter, superseding all human reason and imagination. Neither a Da Vinci Code nor a dozen of Dan Browns can ever fade the fact of this truth - the truth of this faith. Churches may be destroyed, crucifixes may be removed, and Christians may be tortured or even be martyred; but the true faith of Christians can never be erased or shaken by anything that is earthly, neither by a mother of all bombs nor by the father of all destructions…for it is a faith born of having been shaken – like the faith of Moses, Abraham, Job, Peter, Paul, and the like… The resurrection is supposed to renew the whole world. However, this doesn’t ‘seem’ to be the case often. Ours is a wounded history and we live in difficult times. We have only to watch the news on any given evening or read it at any morning. If there is an all-knowing, all powerful, all loving God who is the Lord of this universe, his renewing presence isn’t very evident on the evening news and the morning newspapers. There is violence all over, fuelled on every side by self-righteous ideologies that sanction hatred and bloodshed – death and destruction – along cultural, racial, ethnic and religious lines. Life seems to be threatened from every side. It is fair and reflective to wonder: Are we becoming more afraid of life than death? Where is the resurrection in all these? Why is God seemingly so inactive, so silent? Where is the vindication of Easter Sunday? These are important questions, even if they aren’t particularly deep or new. They are the echoes of the very questions used on first Good Friday to taunt Jesus on the cross: “If you are the Son of God, come down off that cross! If you are God, prove it at once! Act now!” Then and now, it seems, we have never figured out why salvation can’t work like a normal movie where at the end, a morally superior violence kills off or avenges all that is evil. Except God doesn’t work like a Hollywood or Bollywood movie and never has. The God of our faith is truly a God of surprises! God, as revealed in the death and resurrection of Jesus, doesn’t meet our expectations even as he infinitely exceeds them. What the resurrection teaches
is that God doesn’t forcibly intervene to stop tragedy and death. Instead he redeems tragedy and vindicates the death. God rids the world of evil not by using force to blot it out, but by vindicating what’s good in the eyes of evil so that eventually the good is all that’s left. Evil has to forever “look upon the one whom it has pierced!” until it understands what it has done and lets itself be transformed. How does this come about? What the resurrection of Jesus reveals is that there is a deep moral structure to the universe, that the contours of the universe are love, goodness and truth and that this structure, anchored at its centre by Ultimate Love and Supremacy, is non-negotiable: You live life its way or it simply won’t come out right. More importantly, the reverse is also true: If you respect the structure and live life its way, what is good and true and loving will eventually triumph, always, despite everything. If this is true, and it is, then we don’t have to escape suffering and death to achieve victory, we have only to remain faithful, good, and true inside of them. However, part of what is revealed here is that we need a great patience, an endurance called hope. God’s day will come, but God, it seems, is not in any hurry! Good and truth will always triumph, but this triumph must be waited-for, not because God wants us to endure pain as some kind of test, but because God, unlike ourselves, doesn’t use coercion or violence to achieve an aim. God uses only love, truth and goodness, and God uses these by, structurally and non-negotiably, embedding them into the universe itself, like a giant moral immune-system that eventually, always, brings the body back to health. God doesn’t need to intervene like a super-hero at the end of a Hollywood movie and use a morally superior violence to wipe out the bad ones so that the good are spared pain and death and the evil ones are avenged. God lets the universe replenish itself the way a body does when it is attacked by a virus. The immune system eventually does its work, even if, in the short term, there is pain and even death. But always in the end, the universe rights itself. Simply put: whenever we do anything wrong, anything at all, it won’t turn out right. It can’t. The structure of the universe won’t receive it and it comes back to us, one way or the other. Conversely, whenever we do something right, anything that’s true, good, loving, and beautiful, the universe vindicates that. It judges our every act and its judgment allows no exceptions. Perhaps that judgment doesn’t seem to be immediate; it can seem a long time in coming and thus, for a time, we can be confused and ask the question: “Why doesn’t God, truth and goodness, come down off the cross?” Gandhi’s own words might be encouraging at such trying times: “When I despair, I remember that all through history, the way of truth and love has always won. There have been murderers and tyrants, and for a time they seem invincible. But in the end they always fall. Think of it, always.” It was Gandhi’s adamantine faith that without a single exception, always, evil is shamed and good triumphs. The resurrection works – gently, but definitely, in its own way, and in its own time! Let the Easter festival give us the courage to carry on, in goodness and truth. Fr. T. C. Joseph Sdb, Bosco B.Ed. Reader’s Post Today is our victory day! Sir,
Today many will be celebrating one of the greatest day on earth. It’s the day when Christ defeated death. For us it’s a victory day. This proves that Christ did not die forever. The empty tomb is an open fact. What we need more than this? On Good Friday, Christ had entered the Jerusalem which meant He had entered our hearth. But today He has entered heaven’s hearth! Intersetingly, He has brought to knee all those “chant by Pharaises or ......”. Death is broken and been roped by itself. God of glory has risen and has tumbled everything forever. His duty is done. Prophesy has been completed. The cross that had send Jesus to tomb has became a victory symbol of power and glory now. For us we have great eternal hope. The empty tomb means God is alive! He is not fake. The God who can walk on water has drowned the law of gravitation. The God who came faster than speed of sound to save the three men in fire is real and powerful. Your God is powerful. Why do you lament? Look above. If you have the real God that shut the mouth of devils and doubters than why are you worried? R.K.Krishta Luke, Jesus Miracles Ministry, (lukerkkrishta@gmail.com)

Eight coaches of Meerut-Lucknow Rajya Rani Express derailed near Rampur in UP. 1
Rampur, Apr 15 (IANS): At least 14 passengers were injured when eight coaches of an express train derailed over a broken piece of the railway track, police said. A probe has been ordered into the incident - the sixth railway accident in the country so far this year. Railway and police officials said the Rajya Rani Express train was heading for Lucknow from Meerut when the accident took place, two kilometres from Rampur junction and about 150 meters from the Kosi river bridge at around 8.15 a.m. Rampur Superintendent of Police Keshav Kumar Chaudhary said 14 passengers were injured. “Two or three of them were hospitalized and the rest were discharged after giving first aid. All the injured are out of danger.” He said one of the coaches had “completely overturned”. A preliminary
probe revealed that at least three feet of track was found broken and parts of it were embedded in the ground, he said. A team of the Uttar Pradesh Anti-terrorism Squad visited the site. However, the police official ruled out sabotage. “There seems to be no sabotage. The track may have broken because of some pressure,” Chaudhary said, adding the railways have taken over the probe and they should be in a “better position to explain”. However, Northern Railway spokesperson Neeraj Sharma said “only two passengers have received injuries”. The accident affected at least 25 trains on the Meerut-Bareilly section. Sharma said the railway authorities arranged buses for stranded passengers for their onward jour-
ney to their destinations. Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu in the morning said he was “personally monitoring (the) situation”. “Enquiry ordered to look into the cause. Strict action will be taken against any lapse,” the Minister tweeted, and announced financial assistance of Rs 50,000 for the injured. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also announced financial assistance of Rs 50,000 each to those seriously injured and Rs 25,000 each to those suffering minor injuries. This is the sixth accident this year to hit the Indian Railways, the world’s fourth largest rail network that ferries 2.3 crore people across every day. The government in February 2015 announced ambitious plans to pump in Rs one lakh crore to revamp safety infrastructure of the ageing network till 2020. On January 22, more than 40 passengers died and over 50 were injured when the Hirakhand Express derailed near Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh. A month later three coaches and the engine of Kalindi Express derailed after colliding with a goods train at the Tundla Junction in Uttar Pradesh. The two trains were running on the same track. Nobody was injured.
Girl ends life to save dad from debts
Latur, Apr 15 (IANS): On a day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a Rs 1 crore prize to a 20-year-old Latur woman for a digital transaction, another young woman from the district ended her life by jumping into a well as her father could not afford her marriage expenses, officials said. The 21-year-old victim was Shital Vyankat Vayal, a resident of Bhise-Wagholi village, who had completed her Secondary School Certificate three years ago. Her death has added a whole new dimension to the ongoing socio-agrarian crisis gripping Maharashtra. On Friday morning, Shital jumped into a well in her own farmland. But the real story emerged after a suicide note was recovered by her family. In the note, she has recounted how her parents are very poor and did not have money to organise her marriage. “I am ending my life to ease my father’s financial burden and eliminate the practice of dowry in my Maratha-Kunbi community,” said Vayal in simple but touching words, sending shockwaves in state political circles. “Since the past five consecutive years, due to
crop failure, our family’s financial condition has become extremely delicate. Yet my two sisters were married off in a very modest manner,” she wrote. “For my marriage, my father has been making continuous efforts... but since no loans are available from moneylenders or banks, my marriage has been postponed for over two years,” her note of anguish said. “Hence, in order to ease the burden on my father, and to end the practice of ‘devanghevan’ (dowry) in the Maratha community, I am ending my life. My family and myself should not be accused in any manner,” she said. Villagers said that Shital had been getting many proposals for marriage, but the family declined them as they could not afford to raise money for the dowry and marriage expenses. Barely hours after her death, in Nagpur, Modi felicitated electrical engineering student Shraddha Mengshete of Latur. She bagged the Rs 1 crore Mega Draw for Lucky Grahak Yojana for a Rs 1,590 transaction through her RuPay card to pay an EMI for her new mobile phone.
Farooq Abdullah wins Srinagar by-poll; demands PR in J&K SRINAGAR, APR 15 (AGENCIES): National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah on Saturday won the Srinagar Lok Sabha by-poll, defeating the ruling PDP candidate, Nazir Khan, by a margin of over 10,700 votes. Abdullah polled around 48,554 votes against Khan, who got 37,779 votes, officials said. The polling for the seat was held on April 9 amid large- scale violence that left eight persons dead and several dozen others injured. The constituency had recorded an abysmal 7.13 per cent voter turnout, the lowest ever in its history. The Election Commission had ordered repolling in 38 polling stations in violence-hit areas on April 13. This will be the third term as Lok Sabha member for Abdullah, whose victory is being seen as a major setback for the ruling PDP. He was earlier elected to the House of People in 1980 and 2009.
Although there were seven other candidates in the fray, it was NOTA that bagged the second runnerup spot with over 930 voters choosing this option. “As president of NC, I demand and I request the government of India and the President of India that this government should be dismissed right away so that the Governor’s Rule comes into play and people can have some peace,” he said. The bypoll to the seat was necessitated after the then PDP leader Tariq Hamid Karra resigned from the Lower House of Parliament in protest against the “atrocities” inflicted upon the people during the unrest triggered by killing of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani last year. Talking to reporters at National Conference (NC) headquarters here, he said that while the election had been held, let us not forget that a number of young people have died. Nearly eight young

people laid their lives and many were injured, he said. He alleged that people who are not involved in any stone throwing or anything are being arrested or taken out from their homes and that process continues even today. It shows that this government has completely failed in giving peace and tranquillity to the state, he said. The NC president demanded that the bypolls in Anantnag Parliamentary constituency in south Kashmir, which were deferred till May 25, should be held under the Governor’s rule.
Over two dozen students were injured in clashes with the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama town on Saturday, police said. Students of a local college objected to the setting up of a ‘Naka’ (checkpost) outside the college and engaged in stone-pelting at the security forces, police said. Security forces used tear smoke shells to disperse the protesting students who kept on re-grouping to engage the security forces in pitched clashes. Reports from the town said around two dozens students including some girls were injured in these clashes. One of the protesting students was hit on the head by a tear smoke canister and has been shifted to Srinagar city for treatment.
Seven students, teacher drown off Maha coast Sindhudurg, Apr 15 (IANS): Seven engineering students, three of them female, and their teacher from Belgaum in Karnataka drowned in the sea off Malvan, Sindhudurg, here on Saturday afternoon, police said. Another three students were rescued by local fisherfolk. One of the students is in serious condition and undergoing treatment at Malvan hospital, said Sindhudurg Police Control official Ravindra Zarkar. The victims were part of a 50-strong group of picknickers from Maratha Mandal Engineering College, Belgaum. They arrived here early on Saturday in a private bus and went to the picturesque Wayri Beach. Shortly after reaching here, the students, allegedly ignoring warnings by locals of strong currents, ventured into the sea and were soon washed away into deep waters, said Zarkar.
Porn clip played out Delhi’s Himachal CM launches busiest metro station unemployment allowance scheme New Delhi, Apr 15 (IANS): In a bizarre incident that left the Delhi Metro red-faced and its commuters shocked, a hardcore pornographic clip played out on a giant screen at its busiest Rajiv Chowk metro station in the heart of the national capital. With a video of the giant screen playing the explicit clip going viral on Saturday, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) claimed being “unaware” about the clip and put the onus on a private contractor entrusted with installing the screen meant for displaying advertisements. The 25 second video widely shared on social networks, shows the clip being played on the screen with commuters passing by the screen in usual hurry but some of then stopped to record it on their mobile phones.
“The DMRC is not aware about this clip. However, this LED screen was under commissioning and testing by a private contractor and the same is still under commissioning. The work is still not completed,” Delhi Metro spokesperson Anuj Dayal said in a statement. “We will check all the details of the testing and commissioning process of the contractor to establish whether any such clip was played and take adequate safeguards and action,” he said.
Chamba, Apr 15 (IANS): Fulfilling his election campaign promise to give doles to jobless youth ahead of the assembly elections, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh on Saturday distributed cheques for Rs 1,000 each to 10 unemployed youth. He officially launched the scheme at the state-level function to mark the 70th Himachal Day. It was on this day in 1948 that the state came into existence with the merger of 30-odd princely hill states. The Chief Minister said his government

banker, of the total credit growth during the current fiscal, half has come from home loans and a large part of the rest has been due to loans to the service sector. Most of the lenders are private banks and a few large private banks. Other than them, most public sector banks are likely to report flat credit growth for FY17. One fallout of the slowdown in credit is that banks will report a higher percentage of bad loans. Growth in credit helps to mask the level of bad loans. With bad loans at close to 10% of their total assets, many banks face a catch-22 situation. The RBI’s prompt corrective action may make it difficult for banks to expand their balance sheet. The absence of fresh lending would, however, make it difficult for banks to generate revenues to clean up their books.
Terming NSCB as the best bank, he appreciated the staff of the bank for their sincerity while discharging their duty in the bank. While reminding the people that bank is run by loan, the deputy commissioner urged the clients to repay loan in proper time so that the bank shall prosper. NSCB is the lone bank owned by the state therefore, people should make use it for financial generation in the state, added the chief guest. G e n e r a l M a n a ge r

coming to a standstill, bank credit growth was also constrained by demonetisation. Between October and December 2016, bank credit contracted by 2.3% as against a 2.7% growth during the same period last year. Besides bad loans, one of the biggest concerns for the RBI is managing the surplus liquidity with banks. While on the one hand banks are seeing lower credit growth, on the other their deposits continue to remain high, again thanks to demonetisation. Banks have ended the year with an 11.8% growth in deposits, which now stand at more than Rs 108 lakh crore. Some bankers feel that the RBI is reluctant to intervene in the forex market as this would add to the surplus liquidity in the system. According to a senior

MUMBAI, Apr 15 (Agencies): Growth in bank credit in FY17, at 5.1%, has turned out to be the slowest in over 60 years as state-owned banks burdened with bad loans struggled to find safe avenues to lend. The last time loans grew slower than this was in 1953-54 when bank credit growth had slowed down to 1.7%. According to data released by the RBI on Friday, outstanding bank credit as on March 31, 2017 stood at Rs 78.82 lakh crore. A large part of the growth in lending has come in the last fortnight of the month when banks disbursed Rs 3.16 lakh crore. But even after this last-minute surge, loan growth for the whole year was 5.1% as against 10.3% last year. Other than bad loans and corporate investment

The CBDT said the taxman also undertook “extensive enforcement action” of search, survey and seizure post demonetisation and has detected undisclosed income to the tune of Rs 9,334 crore between November 9 and February 28. The demonetisation of two high value currencies of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8 last year. Under the first phase of the operation, it said, 17.92 lakh people, who entered into cash transactions that did not appear to be in line with their tax profile, were contacted via the online medium. “Online queries were raised in 35,000 cases and online verification was completed in more than 7,800 cases,” it said, adding the department has decided to close the verification in cases where explanation of source of cash was found to be justified.

It will also probe those government or Public Sector Undertaking employees who made “large cash deposits”, people who have undertaken high value purchases, those who “layered” or laundered funds by using shell companies and those who did not re-

North Korea parades longrange missiles; warns of war
PYONGYANG, APR 15 (AP): North Korea paraded its intercontinental ballistic missiles in a massive military display in central Pyongyang today, with ruler Kim Jong Un looking on with delight as his nation flaunted its increasingly sophisticated military hardware amid rising regional tensions. Kim did not speak during the annual parade, which celebrates the 1912 birthday of his late grandfather Kim Il Sung, North Korea’s founding ruler, but a top official warned that the North would stand up to any threat posed by the United States. Choe Ryong Hae said President Donald Trump was guilty of “creating a war situation” on the Korean Peninsula by dispatching US forces to the region. “We will respond to an all-out war with an allout war and a nuclear war with our style of a nuclear attack,” said Choe, widely seen by analysts as North Korea’s No 2 official. The parade, the annual highlight of North Korea’s most important holiday, came amid growing international worries that North Korea may be preparing for its sixth nuclear test or a major missile

A North Korean KN-08 Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICMB) is paraded across Kim Il Sung Square during a military parade on Saturday. (AP/PTI) launch, such as its first flight test of an ICBM capable of reaching US shores. But if the parade signalled a readiness for war, North Korea has long insisted that its goal is peace and survival with the growing arsenal a way to ensure that the government in Pyongyang is not easily overthrown. North Korea saw the toppling of Saddam Hussein in Iraq and Moammar Gadhafi in Libya neither of whom had nuclear weapons as proof of the weapons’ power. “It will be the largest of miscalculations if the United States treats us like Iraq and Libya, which are living out miserable fates as victims of aggression, and
Syria, which didn’t respond immediately even after it was attacked,” said a statement yesterday by the general staff of the North Korean army, according to the official Korean Central News Agency. Also yesterday, North Korea’s vice foreign minister told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview that Trump’s tweets he recently tweeted, for example, that the North is “looking for trouble” have inflamed tensions. “Tr ump is always making provocations with his aggressive words,” Han Song Ryol said. US retaliatory strikes earlier this month against Syria over a chemical weapons attack on civilians, coupled with Trump’s dis-
patching of what he called an “armada” of ships to the region, touched off fears in South Korea that the United States was preparing for military action against the North. Pyongyang has also expressed anger over the ongoing annual spring military exercises the US holds with South Korea, which it considers a rehearsal for invasion. But US officials told The Associated Press yesterday that the Trump administration had settled on a policy that will emphasise increasing pressure on Pyongyang with the help of China, North Korea’s only major ally, instead of military options or trying to overthrow Kim’s regime. A US military official, who requested anonymity to discuss planning, said the United States doesn’t intend to use military force against North Korea in response to either a nuclear test or a missile launch. Kim, wearing a suit and tie, was greeted today with thunderous and extensively practised applause as he stepped into view on a large podium, clapping to acknowledge the thousands of soldiers and civilians taking part in the parade at Kim Il Sung Square.
China asks Russia to help ‘cool’ N Korea situation BEIJING, APR 15 (AFP): China is seeking Russia’s help to cool surging tensions over Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions, the country’s foreign minister has told his Moscow counterpart, after Beijing warned of possible conflict over North Korea. Fears over the North’s rogue weapons programme have soared in recent days, with a US naval strike force deployed near the Korean peninsula, while President Donald Trump has warned the threat “will be taken care of ” and Pyongyang has vowed a “merciless” response to any provocation. China - the North’s sole major ally and economic lifeline - yesterday warned that war over North Korea could break out “at any moment”. In a call with Sergei Lavrov later yesterday, Wang Yi said the common goal of the two nations was to “bring all the parties back to the negotiating table”, according to a statement on China’s Foreign Ministry website. “China is ready to coordinate closely with Russia to help cool down as quickly as possible the situation on the peninsula and encourage the parties concerned to resume dialogue,” Wang told Lavrov, referring to the stalled six-party talks on the North’s nuclear programme that includes Russia, China and the United States.
Massive US bomb death toll rises to 94: Afghan official
U.S. forces and Afghan commandos are seen in Asad Khil near the site of a U.S. bombing in the Achin district of Jalalabad, east of Kabul, Afghanistan, Saturday. KABUL, APR 15 (AP): The number of militants killed in an attack by the largest non-nuclear weapon ever used in combat by the US military has risen to 94, an Afghan official said today. Ataullah Khogyani, spokesman for the provincial governor in Nangarhar, said the number of Islamic State group dead was up from the 36 reported a day earlier. A Ministry of Defence official had said yesterday the number of dead could rise as officials assessed the bomb site in Achin district. “Fortunately there is no report of civilians being killed in the attack,” Khogyani said. The US attack on a tunnel complex in remote
eastern Nangarhar province near the Pakistan border killed at least four IS group leaders, Khogyani said. He said a clearance operation to assess the site of the attack was continuing. The strike using the Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb, or MOAB, was carried out Thursday against an Islamic State group tunnel complex carved into the mountains that Afghan forces had tried to assault repeatedly in recent weeks in fierce fighting in Nangarhar province. The office of President Ashraf Ghani said Friday there was “close coordination” between the U.S. military and the Afghan government on the operation, and they were careful to prevent
any civilian casualties. The US estimates 600800 IS fighters are in Afghanistan, mostly in Nangarhar. The US has concentrated on fighting them while also supporting Afghan forces against the Taliban. The US has more than 8,000 US troops in Afghanistan, training local forces and conducting counterterrorism operations. Also on Saturday, Khogyani said a district leader and three others were wounded when their vehicle was targeted by a bomb. One of the wounded was Ghalib Mujahid, Bati Kot district chief, he said. “The district chief and others are out of danger and are not in life-threatening condition,” he said.

TEHRAN, APR 15 (IANS): Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani on Friday registered to run for a second four-year term in the upcoming presidential election in the country. At the Interior Ministry’s headquarters in Tehran, Rouhani said he had fulfilled the promises he made to the Iranian people during the election campaign four years ago, EFE news cited statements published by official media outlets. In a new attempt to convince undecided voters and citizens disappointed with his policies, the Iranian President stressed that his government’s economic performance was better than his predecessors’ in recent years. He also alluded to the nuclear agreement signed in July 2015 between Iran and six major powers, whose protection, in his view, is one of “the most important economic and political issues” facing the nation. “Those who made incessant efforts on the nuclear pact should tread the path up to the end,” he said in remarks to the press after registering as a candidate. Rouhani said maintaining national security was one of his government’s most important goals and stressed that “the ominous shadow of the war (over the country) has disappeared”. Rouhani, who won the 2013 presidential elections in the first round with 50.8 per cent of the vote, is the candidate of the reformist bloc, although he defines himself as moderate.

Coptic Pope Tawadros II will lead Easter mass in Cairo’s Saint Mark’s Cathedral, while the church said celebrations this year would be scaled back. “Tanta and Alexandria created a big shock, for all of Egypt,” Halim said. Easter, which along with Christmas is one of Christianity’s most important events, marks what followers believe was the resurrection of Christ on the third day after his crucifixion.

Rio de Janeiro, Apr 15 (IANS): Half of the 12 stadiums built or renovated with taxpayers’ money to host the 2014 football World Cup in Brazil saw funds being pocketed by government officials and construction company executives, local media reported. In the case of at least four of those stadiums, there is testimony from some involved in the scheme that reveals construction firms and officials conspired to inflate the price of the project in order to split the profits, news network Globo said on its website on Friday. The stadium projects under review include the landmark Maracana in Rio de Janeiro, Mane Garrincha in Brasilia, Arena Pernambuco in Recife, Arena Castelao in Fortaleza, Arena da Amazonia in Manaus and Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo, reports Xinhua news agency. According to government figures, Rio’s Maracana ended up costing some 75 per cent more to renovate than originally planned, requiring $383 million, despite having been remodelled in 2007 for the Pan American Games. The costliest stadium was Brasilia’s, which was projected to entail $238 million, but consumed $447 million of taxpayers’ money -- 87.8 per cent more. The revelations were made by some 77 former executives of Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht, which is under investigation as part of Operation Car Wash, a wide-ranging probe into graft in government.

Mata, 28, underwent surger y last month but the club hoped he could retur n to the field before the end of the English Premier League on May 21, reports Efe. However, Mourinho on Friday revealed in the press conference prior to Sunday’s duel with Chelsea that the Spanish international will not be available “until the end of May”.
to respond in their game in hand on Spurs when they visit Manchester United on Super Sunday. Kane, who replaced Janssen up front in one o f two c ha nge s fr o m Tottenham’s victory over Watford, was seemingly in the mood to make up for lost time in his bid for goals and threatened early on. His close-range effort was beaten away by Artur Boruc on five minutes, although the offside flag had been raised. Bournemouth needed to defend with perfect concentration in order to keep the rampant hosts at bay, but their resistance only lasted 16 minutes as Dembele grabbed his first goal of the season. A delivery from a left wing corner from Christian Eriksen landed at the feet
of an unmarked Dembele at the back post, who made no mistake in rifling home. Spurs only needed to wait three minutes to double their lead as the Cherries displayed more haphazard defending. Jack Wilshere, whose every touch was roundly booed by the home fans, played a sloppy ball in midfield which was seized upon by Eriksen. The Denmark international fed Kane, who flicked a wonderful ball into Son’s path and the South Korea inter national motored through on goal before slipping the ball into the far corner for his fifth goal from his last six shots on target in the Premier League. There was no response from the visitors as Boruc was by far the busier of the
two goalkeepers, making smar t low saves from Eriksen and Kane before the break. Kane had scored five goals in his previous three appearances against Eddie Howe’s side and there was an inevitability when he made it 3-0 on 48 minutes. Simon Francis’ tame challenge allowed Kane to venture into acres of space in the area, and the England striker hammered the ball home from 15 yards out. The game maintained its one-way feel as Spurs took aim at Boruc’s goal. The goalkeeper had to deal with eight shots on target in the second-half as Kane, Eriksen and Dele Alli were handed presentable opportunities but were thwar ted by the Bournemouth shotstopper. Bournemouth rarely emerged from their own half and their efforts were summed up by Charlie Daniels’ speculative effort on 72 minutes, which was their only shot on target. Tottenham even had time to give Kane and Alli a breather in the closing stages as they strolled in the sunshine. One of those replacements, Janssen, put the cherry on top of a perfect day at White Hart Lane by notching his first goal from open play for Spurs in stoppage time. New Delhi can only hold matches upto October 16.Marquee matches have not been allotted in Delhi due to concer ns over high pollution level after Diwali. “Delhi won’t be able to host any matches after the 16th of October because of the high pollution level after Diwali. Since they can’t host any of the semifinal or quarterfinal matches, the sports ministry says it would be nice to request Fifa to at least mo ve India’s group matches to Delhi. So we have requested Fifa. We will wait and see what they have to say,” AIFF general
secretar y Kushal Das informed TOI on Friday. The AIFF put forward the request to Fifa two days back on Wednesday and are expecting a reply by next week, added Das.”We h av e m e n t i o n e d t h e reasons. The government is a big supporter of the event. They ha ve made a request that Delhi should get some importance in this context. We can expect a reply by next week since it’s the holiday season right now. They (Fifa) will have to review it and discuss it with the competitions department. It might take a little bit of time.” T h e U n i o n gover nment has spent a lot of money on the tournament which will be the first Fifa event to be held in India. KKR see off Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL Ko lkata , A p r 1 5 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : C h r i s Woakes took two wickets as Kolkata Knight Riders earned a 17-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL. Woakes’ second was the key wicket of Yuvraj Singh (26 off 16 balls) who had smacked him for six earlier in the 15th over as Sunrisers were beginning to close in on their 173-run target. Put into bat by Sunrisers, Kolkata’s pinchhitting experiment with Sunil Narine at the top of the order didn’t pay off this time, as he was bowled for six by the impressive B h u v n e s h wa r Ku m a r (3-20) in the third over. Kumar should have had two in two when Uthappa came to the crease and seemingly edged the next ball behind, only for the decision not to be given by the umpire. Uthappa made the most of the reprieve, as well as a missed run-out chance on 15, by cracking

five fours and four sixes in his 39-ball knock. There was fur ther controversy when Uthappa was given out caught down leg on 52, only for the third umpire - checking to see if the ball had carried to the wicketkeeper - to overturn the decision when he noticed there had been no bat involved. Uthappa did finally fall in the 15th over to Ben Cutting, but impressive middle-order cameos from Manish Pandey (46 off 35)
and Yusuf Pathan (21no off 15) further lifted the Kolkata score. In reply, Sunrisers started well enough, taking 32 from the first four overs, but openers Shikhar Dhawan (23 off 22) and David Warner (26 off 30) were guilty of not kicking on. Sunil Narine bowled superbly - taking 1-18 from his four overs - and while Woakes was much more expensive, conceding 49, he did take two important
wickets. With 75 runs needed from the final six overs, Yu v r a j s i g n a l l e d t h e Sunrisers charge by hitting Woakes’ first ball for six, while Cutting cracked four off the third. But Woakes responded well, doing for Yuvraj with a well-disguised off-cutter fifth ball that Yuvraj mistimed down to the fielder at long-on. Sunrisers never recovered and ultimately came up short, finishing their innings on 155-6.
