Over `7 lakh cr bad loans written off
MUMBAI, APR 13 (AGENCIES): With the government stepping in time and again to bail out banks by recapitalising them with taxpayer money, banks have stepped up writeoffs of loans taken by rogue borrowers. They wrote off a whopping Rs 1,56,702 crore of non-performing loans during the nine-month ended December 2018, taking the total loan writeoff to over Rs 7,00,000 crore in the last 10 years, according to figures revealed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Bulk of the writeoffs, or almost four-fifth of the total amount written off in the last 10 years, have accrued in the last five years since April 2014. In its reply to an application filed by The Indian Express, the RBI revealed that the total loan written off in the last five years since April 2014 amounted to Rs 5,55,603 crore. Eager to show lower bad loans, banks wrote off Rs 1,08,374 crore in 201617 and Rs 161,328 crore in 2017-18. In the first six months of 2018-19, they wrote off Rs 82,799 crore. The quantum of writeoff zoomed to Rs 64,000 crore
in the October-December 2018 quarter. Banking sources said very little is known about the identity of the borrowers and the amount written off in the case of individual borrowers. While banks claim that the recovery measures continue even after loans are written off, sources said not more than 15-20 per cent is recovered and the writeoff figures every year are rising, much faster than recoveries and recapitalisation. “Banks are required to extinguish all available means of recovery before writing off any account fully or partly. It is observed that some banks are resorting to technical writeoff of accounts, which reduces incentives to recover. Banks resorting to partial and technical writeoffs should not show the remaining part of the loan as standard asset,” the RBI had said in an earlier circular to banks. The amount of technical writeoff is required to be certified by statutory auditors. The central bank had explained that writing off NPAs is a regular exercise carried. “A substantial portion of this writeoff is,
however, technical in nature. It is primarily intended at cleansing the balance sheet and achieving taxation efficiency. In ‘Technically Written Off ’ ‘accounts, loans are written off from the books at the Head Office, without foregoing the right to recovery. Further, writeoffs are generally carried out against accumulated provisions made for such loans. Once recovered, the provisions made for those loans flow back into the profit and loss account of banks,” the RBI had said in an explanatory note. But neither the banking sector nor the RBI discloses the identity of borrowers whose loans are written off by banks. “I have nothing against writeoff but it’s to be done scarcely and within a policy with all efforts to recover the money. Any asset which is backed by tangible asset is never written off. You must be subject to scrutiny for these writeoffs. There must be a policy. You ask any banker. They have written off Vijay Mallya’s loan. Then how are they going to recover that money? All I am saying is that write off the loan as per policy but that has to be done by
somebody who is authorised to do it. Use it sparingly and do it where essential. If there’s an asset, why are you writing it off ?” a former RBI official said. GUWAHATI, APR 13 (AGENCIES): A notorious human trafficker, who was recently arrested by Lucknow Police, has confessed that 14 girls from the North East region were sold to persons in Saudi Arabia, Assam Tribune report stated. The girls were mostly promised jobs of nursing attendants. The kingpin of the human trafficking racket has been identified as Rumana Begum, who had allegedly trafficked many girls from across the country, including North East. The sensational revelation came a day after Uttar Pradesh Police busted a trans-national human trafficking racket where a girl hailing from Tripura was rescued on her way to be trafficked to Dubai on April 10. The victim is likely to be brought back to her native

Sources informed that the victims were taken to Dubai in the name of providing lucrative jobs, but were subsequently sold in places like Dubai. “Their passports are seized once they reach there and are exploited sexually and physically,” a source privy to the development said. A team of Lucknow Police has already left for Mumbai based on the call detail records of the arrested trafficker. Rishi Kant of Shakti Vahini, a leading organization working against human trafficking, told the Assam Tribune, “We believe, if investigated simultaneously in Tripura, Mumbai and Lucknow, which in this case are source, transit and destination respectively, more shocking development would emerge.”

Modi govt wrote off Rs 5.5 lakh cr loans of its ‘blue-eyed’ boys, says Congress
Congress on Saturday accused the Narendra Modi government of writing off Rs 5.5 lakh crore in loans of its “blue-eyed boys” and said it was the worst example of crony capitalism. Citing a news report, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi accused the government of “favouritism”. “Crony capitalism’s worst example is this. In the last 10 years, the total write off was Rs 7 lakh crore. Out of this Rs 5.5 lakh crore has been written off under Modiji. This means 80 per cent write offs have happened during the Modi government’s tenure. “The excuse given frequently is that writing off loan in the books does not mean that the loan is waived. But, that is a very illusory, a very tactical argument. The reality is that when a bank writes off a loan, the incentive to recover is virtually nil,” he said. Alleging that the Modi government rested on the twin pillars of “cronyism and loot”, Singhvi challenged the government to reveal the names of those whose loans have been written off.

KOHIMA, APR 13 (NPN): Nagaland parliamentary constituency election 2019 and 26 Aonglenden assembly constituency by-poll recorded 83.12% and 84.35% polling respectively. According to CEO office, out of the total 1206287 electorate for LS poll, 10,02,670 voters including 5,07,404 male and 4,95,266 female exercised their adult franchise on polling day. The voter turnout in this election is 5.13% lesser compared to the 88.25% figure in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. As per report of CEO, the poll percentage of Aonglenden A/C differed on the day of polling and as of today. CEO office recorded a poll percentage of 84.35% as of April 13, whereas on April 11, the percentage was 88.5%.
Anil Ambani got 143.7 mn euro tax waiver after Rafale jet deal: French newspaper NEW DELHI, APR 13 (PTI): France waived taxes worth 143.7 million euros to a French-registered telecom subsidiary of Anil Ambani’s Reliance Communications in 2015, months after Prime Minister Modi’s announcement of buying 36 Rafale jets, leading French newspaper Le Monde reported Saturday, giving a fresh twist to the deal in the middle of the Lok Sabha polls. While the French embassy here said a global settlement was reached with the firm under legislative and regulatory framework, the defence ministry said any connections drawn between the tax issue and the Rafale deal was totally “inaccurate” and “tendentious”. In October 2015, six months after Modi announced in Paris about the Rafale deal, the French tax authorities accepted 7.3 million euros from Reliance Flag Atlantic France as a settlement as against original demand of 151 million euros, the French newspaper reported. As per current exchange rate, the amount waived was Rs 1,123 crore.

Konyak organizations flay assault on minor girl NDPP, NPF express gratitude KOHIMA, APR 13 (NPN): Konyak organisations have strongly condemned the assault on a 13-year old minor girl by a government servant and his wife in Kohima. Konyak Students’ Union Kohima (KSUK) president Hongpe and Longchang Area Union Kohima (LAUK) president Pelü Konyak disclosed that the victim was working as a domestic helper with the couple since March 13, 2019. They described the assault on the minor as “inhuman and beyond human tolerance” that went on regularly. The images of the victim with bruises on her body went viral on social media. The Unions revealed that FIR has been lodged against the couple and also appealed to the responsible authority to immediately book the culprits and mete out befitting punishment as per the law of the land. Further, the unions also warned that they would not be held responsible for “any eventualities that may
arise out of the loophole in the course of adjudication.” They have also appealed to all the right thinking citizens to condemn the “inhuman act” and also urged upon the law enforcing authority to deliver justice and also not to grant bail to the accused persons at any cost. When contacted, KSUK president Hongpe disclosed that the incident came to light after the union was informed by some friends of the union. On learning of the incident, Hogpe said he and the union finance secretary Champong and KNSK Kohima unit team rushed to the house where the victim was working. On being questioned, Hongpe said the couple initially denied the assault but when questioned about the bruises, the wife admitted to have only pulled the girl’s ear. When Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK) members insisted on checking the minor,
the girl bore severe bruises and scars. It was reported that the victim was made to apply “foundation cream” on the affected parts to hide the bruises. Hongpe regretted that instead of admitting to their fault, the couple defended themselves and even insulted the KSUK and KNSK Kohima unit. In particular, he said it was unfortunate that an officer of such stature could go to such an extent. KSUK president also expressed shock that despite repeated appeals not to send their children as domestic helpers, parents continued to do so. He said such children are made to suffer at the hands of such “guardians”. He expressed confidence that justice would be done and also appreciated the Child-line home for rescuing the victim. The French embassy, in a statement, said a global settlement was reached between the French tax authorities and Reliance company, in a tax dispute pertaining to the period 2008-2012. The defence ministry said neither the period of the tax concession nor the subject matter of the concession relate even remotely to the Rafale procurement. The French newspaper said the company was investigated by French tax authorities and found liable to pay 60 million euros in taxes for the period 2007 to 2010. However, Reliance offered to pay 7.6 million euros only as a settlement but it was French tax authorities refused to accept the amount. The authorities conducted another probe for the period 2010 to 2012 and asked the company to pay an additional 91 million euros in taxes, the report said.
1 held in connection with fake letters, docs DIMAPUR, APR 13 (NPN): Nagaland police cyber cell unit on Saturday arrested one person in connection with the “fake letters/document” written on the letter head of Nagaland chief minister and NDPP writing pad bearing signatures of chief minister Neiphiu Rio and NDPP president Chingwang Konyak. The fake letters/documents went viral on social media after which the NDPP filed a police complaint to arrest those responsible. According to sources, the cyber cell unit reportedly located the person under whose name the SIM card was registered. However, it turned out that the arrested person had no connection with the fake letters/documents. It was suspected that the registered SIM may have been disposed by the registered owner and misused by the culprit/s after obtaining it from the black market. (Staff Reporter)

DIMAPUR, APR 13 (NPN): In view of the ongoing road construction works on National Highway 29, Kohima police have informed that the stretch of road from Lerie Baptist Church to South Police Station Junction would remain closed for all forms of vehicular traffic from 7am onwards on April 14, 2019. In a press release, Kohima police PRO advised all light vehicles heading towards Phesama/Khuzama from Kohima Town and vice versa to take the alternate route via Ministers’ Hill-Aradura-Phesama. Police, however, informed that no heavy vehicle would be allowed to ply along that route. Inter-state heavy vehicles would not be allowed to enter Kohima Town till the completion of the construction works, police stated. K Y M C

SBC holds convocation ceremony: Servanthood Bible College (SBC) held its 29th convocation ceremony at the College Hall in Dimapur on April 13. Addressing the convocation, Riverine School principal, Rev. Dr. Hukato N. Shohe, encouraged the graduates to continue to serve the Lord with all their heart, and serve everyone, regardless of whether they are with or against them, or agree or disagree with them. He stressed on how
many Christians had unfortunately misappropriated the idea of service and were serving their self advertisement, selfish desires, ego, personal gain and interests. Rev. Dr. Shohe challenged the graduating students to serve the Lord, not with the mindset and intention of competing with others and serving for one’s personal gain, but with the will to please God and expand His Kingdom. Board of Tr ustees chairman, Alemtemshi also delivered a brief message at the program encouraging the graduates to seek God more and serve Him with passion. This was the first convocation ceremony held after the demise of late S. Tsuknungsangba, founder of SBC. The college was established on July 8, 1989, and this year, it had a total of 65 students graduating from the college. Presentation of awards and conferring of degrees and diplomas was initiated by chairman, Board of Governors, Dr. Bendangla and a dedicatory prayer for the graduates was offered by Rev. Alemmeren. Guest speaker, NCRC general secretary, Dr Vangphong Phom who delivered the graduation message, expounded on six keys that Christians and people called to serve God can use to open many doors in their ministry and personal life. Dr Phom who based his message on Matthew chapter 13 verses 16 and 17, encouraged the gradu-
ating students to use the keys for a fruitful ministry: the involvement of people, to be filled with the love of God, to read the Bible for answers and guidance, to lead a sincere personal prayer life, to continually praise God in all circumstances, and to rely on the Holy Spirit. Dr Phom further reminded the graduates that their decision to serve God was the highest decision and their mission to save souls was the wisest. He also encouraged the graduates to stand firm in their cause, adding that if God stands for them, they can do great and mighty things. DIMAPUR: The Administrative Training Institute (ATI), Kohima, conducted an intensive half-day study prog ram on consumer rights, based on the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 for Nagaland Civil Service (NCS) probationers, 2019 batch on April 10. Nagaland Voluntary Consumers' Organisation (NVCO) Press & Media Cell, in a press release stated that its president, advocate Kezhokhoto Savi was the resource person for the training. In his talk, Savi said that consumer protection is a group of laws and organizations designed to ensure rights of consumers, fair trade, competition and accurate market information. He also listed the eight consumer rights defined by the United Nations Consumer Bills of Rights as: i) Right to Safety – Safeguarding against goods that are hazardous to life and prop-
erty; ii) Right to Information – Consumers have the right to be informed about prices price, quality, quantity, etc. of the products they buy; iii) Right to Choice – Consumer should be provided with a wide variety of goods to choose; iv) Right to be heard – The right of consumers to have their complaints heard; v) Right to Satisfaction of Basic needs – This right demands that people have access to basic essential goods and services, adequate food, clothing, shelter, health care, education, public utilities, water, and sanitation; vi) Right to Redress – Consumers have the right to seek redress regarding their complaints; vii) Right to Consumer Education – The right of consumers to be educated about their rights and; viii) Right to a Healthy Environment – This is the right to live and work in an environment that is non-threatening to the well-being of present and future generations.

DIMAPUR: Nagaland Governor, PB Acharya, on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti, has issued a message where he stated that Dr. B. R. Ambedkar was truly a builder of a nation and a global leader instead of just a Dalit leader. Ambedkar Jayanti or Bhim Jayanti is an annual festival observed on April 14 to commemorate the memory of Babasaheb Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, marking his birth on April 14, 1891. In his message sent through the Raj Bhavan PRO, Acharya said that Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar is called “The Architect of the Indian Constitution”. He pointed out that the constitution of India was written by a Committee headed by Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. The Governor further added that Dr. Babasaheb, being from the Scheduled Caste, knew the pains of being discriminated against and “did a great job” in removing such social injustices. The Governor mentioned Dr. Ambedkar’s Bahishkrit Hitakarini Sabha institution as being the first organized attempt to uplift the untouchables because he wanted to educate them for a better life. ments and marches were initiated under Dr. Ambedkar’s leadership meant to bring equality in society. According to the Gover, the Dalit Buddhist movement is a socio-political movement started by Dr. Ambedkar which radically interpreted Buddhism and created a new school of Buddhism called Navayana. The Navayana challenged the caste system and promoted rights of the suppressed community. Citing more details of Dr. Ambedkar’s life, the message stated that he was nominated as a the first Law Minister of Independent India and appointed as Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee under Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was also nominated as Industries Minister in the Nehru Cabinet. Both were not members of the Congress party and they had to resign later due to differences with Nehru. On the occasion, the Governor appealed to citizens, especially youth, to emulate Dr. Ambedkar’s principles and work hard to build a Nation of justice, equality, opportunity and dignity for all human beings and peace and prosperity among people.

The Deputy Commissioner, in an appeal letter, cited the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products Act 2003 (Which bans smoking in public places) and requested these businesses and offices to display the mandatory “This is a public place. Smoking here is an offence” sign in their business premises, offices and restaurants (with 30 and above seats). Hotels with 30 or more rooms have been asked to designate a separate smoking room for customers. IMPHAL, Apr 13: Scribe bodies in Manipur Saturday have described the order of Imphal West district magistrate ‘an attempt to gag the media.’ An order of the district magistrate issued on April 10 imposed restriction to media from covering an event of paying floral tribute to a memorial of the slain cadres of People Liberation Army (PLA)- the armed wing of Manipur based rebel group Revolutionary People Front (RPF) in Imphal. All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU) and Editors’ Guild Manipur, in a joint statement, strongly condemned the order saying that they considered it as an attempt to muzzle the media and has urged the government to not to resort to such measures in future, in the interest of democracy.

GUWAHATI, APR 13 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court on Friday ordered a ban on mining and construction activities in Kaziranga National Park and animal corridors. Mining activities were banned along the southern boundary of the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, and construction was ordered to be stopped on the routes that form nine animal corridors. The bench of Justice Arun Mishra and Justice Deepak Gupta ordered the ban on the recommendations of the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) in its report. The CEC report came in the wake of alleged largescale illegal mining and stone crushing activities within the elephant corridor connecting the Kaziranga National Park and Karbi Anglong Hills.

Amritsar/New Delhi, Apr 13 (PTI): India Saturday remembered Jallianwala Bagh massacre victims with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Congress chief Rahul Gandhi paying tribute to those killed in the Amritsar tragedy 100 years ago. The massacre took place at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar during the Baisakhi festival on April 13, 1919, when troops of the British Indian Army under the command of Colonel Reginald Dyer opened fire at a crowd of people holding a pro-independence demonstration, leaving several dead and scores injured. Naidu on Saturday paid his respect by placing a wreath on the memorial and listened hymns being sung by Sikh priests at Jallianwala Bagh. He also released a commemorative coin and a postage stamp to mark the centenary. The vice-president later tweeted that Jallianwala Bagh massacre was a reminder to each one of us as to how hard-won and precious our freedom is. Addressing reporters in Kolhapur, the Maratha strongman also slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleging that he had failed to fulfil the promises made during the 2014 poll campaign and was, therefore, diverting people’s attention. “The Rafale deal was not acceptable to Manohar Parrikar. He therefore resigned from the post of Defence minister and returned to Goa,” claimed Pawar. Parrikar, who took over as defence minister in November 2014, was sworn in as Goa chief minister on March 14, 2017. He died on March 17 this year after a long battle with a pancreatic ailment. New Delhi, Apr 13 (PTI): The Delhi poll body has directed the BJP not to air any content on NaMo TV without its certification, a day after the Election Commission directed that all recorded programmes displayed on the platform be pre-certified, officials said. The poll body had on Thursday said since NaMo TV was sponsored by the BJP, all recorded programmes displayed on the platform should be pre-certified by media certification and monitoring committee of Delhi and all political publicity contents displayed without pre-certification be removed immediately. Following the EC’s directive, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Delhi wrote to the saffron party to ensure that all political content not approved be removed. “As a precautionary measure, two officials have been deployed to watch NaMo TV and monitor its content,” officials said. An official said political parties usually submit audiovisual content for precertification, without specifying on which platform it will be aired.

Ever since the apex court said the Sabarimala temple should be open to women of all age groups, the three rival political fronts are caught in verbal duels. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech at the Vijay Sanklap rally on Friday in Kozhikode seems to have boosted the BJP’s Kerala unit. The Keral BJP unit chief P.S. Sreedharan Pillai said their stand on the Sabarimala had been upheld by the party. The party’s stance also reflected in the manifesto, released in Delhi, he added. At the rally, Modi said if need be, the BJP would move the court and could bring a law to protect the tradition and culture of the Sabarimala temple. Modi also slammed the CPI-M-led government in Kerala for “unleashing police attack on people who stood up to protect the tradition and culture of the temple”. “We have stated that we would not seek votes in
the name of religion and it has not been done,” Pillai said here on Saturday. Chief Electoral Officer Tikka Ram Meena had warned the political parties not to use Sabarimala issue to seek vote. “What we plan to do with the Sabarimala issue is mentioned in our national manifesto. Had it been against the model code of conduct, the Election Commission would have indicated it. However, nothing has been said,” Pillai said. “How can the election officials here can override it. We will use the issue in our campaign,” he said. Slamming the BJP, former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said no other party than the Congress was serious on protecting the Sabarimala temple tradition and culture. “As Chief Minister, we had submitted to the apex court the only way out of this, is to come out with a law. The BJP, instead of trying to act, was using it to create trouble, and that’s not acceptable,” said Chandy. New Delhi, Apr 13 (PTI): Union minister and BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Saturday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the “biggest victim of political intolerance”. The remarks of the Union minister for minority affairs came amid statements issued by certain groups of people, including artistes, appealing to the voters to oust the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from power in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls. Naidu accuses EC of bias; EC rebuts New Delhi, Apr 13 (PTI): Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday met Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora here and submitted a memorandum alleging that a large number of EVMs malfunctioned during polling in the state on Thursday and inadequate security led to incidents of violence. Accusing the Election Commission of bias, he claimed that police and administration officers were removed arbitrarily, creating policy paralyses in the administration. He also demanded that the EC return to the ballot paper system to “preserve the sanctity of the electoral process” as there was a “possibility of tampering” with EVMs. “The manner in which the Election Commission of India, a constitutional body,... miserably failed to live up to the spirit of the constitutional duty, is not only disturbing but also dangerous to the future of democracy in the country,” the TDP chief said. Naidu alleged that the Election Commission transferred the state chief electoral officer, Srikakulam district magistrate, Superintendents of Police of Kadapa and Srikakulam and

Naidu was told that none of the returning officers were removed and only one district election officer was shunted out, sources said. Naidu claimed that the transfer of the DG (Intelligence), who looks after the security of the chief minister, compromised his safety. The chief minister alleged that the EC acted “according to the whims and fancies of the YSR Congress Party’s candidates” while complaints by his TDP were ignored. He claimed the SP of Prakasam district was transferred soon after the opposition’s nominee made a threatening statement against the police officer.
“The chief secretary was not only unceremoniously removed, but his replacement was done without even consulting the state government, which goes against established conventions and procedures of democratic governance,” the memorandum quoted Naidu as saying. “Transferring the chief secretary just a few days before the election is atrocious and the failure of the election machinery (in the state) can be attributed to this hasty step,” the Andhra Pradesh chief minister said. But the EC is understood have told Naidu that the chief secretary was shunted out for failing to comply with poll panel’s orders. During the election in the state on April 11, voting was delayed by two to six hours at many polling stations as a large number of EVMs malfunctioned, forcing many voters to return home, the TDP chief claimed. The chief electoral officer of the state himself had trouble casting his vote because the EVMs were not working, he alleged. On the electronic voting machines malfunctioning, Naidu was told by the EC that ground data showed that 1.75 per cent of EVMs were replaced.

n April 12, Army veterans, including eight former chiefs, four former navy chiefs and a former air force chief, wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind to stop political parties from politicising the armed forces for elections. Some of those whose names were mentioned, retracted but nevertheless the issue is of serious concern. As serving officers are not authorised to air their views, veterans have come forward to speak up on the issue by stressing that covert operations should always be kept secret and not be talked about to win political battles. The 150-odd veterans of the Indian Army had urged upon the President and Commander-in-Chief, to register their objection against the manner in which political parties have been repeatedly misusing the armed forces for political gains during the ongoing campaign ahead of the Lok Sabha election. The veterans said misusing the name of the armed forces would impinge adversely on the morale and fighting efficiency of the serving man or woman in uniform and also could therefore directly affect national security and national integrity. What proved to be the proverbial last straw was the campaign speech by UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath, who referred to the Indian Army as “Modi Ji Ki Sena” (Modiji’s Army). This was another regretful instance of how the armed forces is being misused for election. It may also be recalled that media pictures of election platforms and campaigns show party workers wearing military uniforms; and posters and images with pictures of soldiers and especially of Indian Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, displayed. The Indian Army, Air Force and Navy- are absolutely secular and apolitical. Even if the military implemented policy decisions, yet the officers and men and women strictly adhere to the code of conduct. Therefore, when political parties compete with each other to prove their ‘patriotism’ by using the names or photos of the armed forces, it is the greatest disservice done to the uniformed personnel. Army veterans had also not approved the decision of the government to celebrate the second anniversary of the ‘surgical strike’ in 2018. Special forces of the Army carried out “surgical strikes” on September 29, 2016, on seven terror launch pads across the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), killing several terrorists. Several serving and retired uniformed persons have expressed dissatisfaction over the three-day nationwide celebration, named ‘Parakram Parv’, as it was seen as being only aimed at gaining political mileage. The Military had also expressed surprise with the government’s decision because there were no celebrations in 2017 to mark the first anniversary of the cross-border strike. Said Maj. Gen(Retd) Satbir Singh “We do not want the government to use surgical strikes for deriving political advantage. The government should not look at us as just a vote bank.” It is also a matter of concern that the armed forces has become a hunting ground for political parties. This will only result in the rank and file of the armed forces being infected by the political virus. If that happens then the vow to ‘Hinduise’ the military would be achieved and which will certainly expose the nation’s internal security to great danger. But if we will only roll back on God the burdens He has placed on us, He will take away that immense feeling of responsibility, replacing it with an awareness and understanding of Himself and His presence. Many servants set out to serve God with great courage and with the right motives. But with no intimate fellowship with Jesus Christ, they are soon defeated. They do not know what to do with their burden, and it produces weariness in their lives. Others will see this and say, “What a sad end to something that had such a great beginning!” “Cast your burden on the Lord….” You have been bearing it all, but you need to deliberately place one end on God’s shoulder. “…the government will be upon His shoulder” (Isaiah 9:6). Commit to God whatever burden He has placed on you. Don’t just cast it aside, but put it over onto Him and place yourself there with it. You will see that your burden is then lightened by the sense of companionship. But you should never try to separate yourself from your burden.

The publicized information and thousands of diplomatic cables shook the world’s national security establishments with the classified information leaks which has totally transformed the political templates and as a consequence changed the course of history particularly of the US presidential election through disclosures of Hillary Clinton emails. In view of this Assange was taken into custody from the Ecuadorian embassy in London on the 11th of April, 2019. Nonetheless, Assange has been offered asylum by the Ecuador’s embassy in June 2012 and has been living till the ambassador of Ecuador revoked his asylum status by inviting Scotland Yard inside. Assange known for his daringness and courage who eventually became a symbol of transparency as the whistle blowing website exposed government secrets across the world. Right across the world people were dismayed and dumbfounded as they read the contents of the classified information—so revealing and mind blowing. Concept of community based toilet facilities came about since the early eighties but failed to sustain and the one reason I can think of is lack/shortage of water, not necessarily awareness of the populace. One obviously cannot use a toilet facility relying on twigs and papers and with water source situated far from homes, residents cannot afford to use a major portion of the hard fetched water for toiletry purpose. So if a particular project is being instituted, best it is if its efficacy is ensured by amalgamation of facilities that complement the other. Come October 2019, another effort for ranking would start taking rounds and concern departments would be on their heels to up the ante, however, that should not be the essence. Rather than conducting inspections for the purpose of ranking, it would be prudent to attempt at checking serviceability and ways to facilitate longevity of the existing facilities. Infrastructure cannot be created through random distribution of materials viz three bags of cement, three CGI sheets, a fiber commode etc and therein reposing confidence in the residents for its installation. Haphazard installation can only entail further inconvenience in the neighbourhood by stench and possible risk of contacting communicable diseases. Rendering unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s
here are two meanings to the word “Caesar” in the biblical context. The first meaning is in reference to a particular Roman Emperor in Jesus’ times. The second meaning is in the context of the civil government (or authority) that God himself has instituted in human societies for the administration of God’s rule in human political affairs. When Jesus replied the Pharisees’ question in Mathew 22:21 and said “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and unto God the things that are God’s;” he was referring to Caesar Tiberius the Roman Emperor who ruled Rome from AD 14-AD37. But at the same time, Jesus was also referring to the civil government of Rome that had been established by God’s sanction. (For details of the establishment of such governments by God’s sanction, refer to Romans chapter 13:1-7) But before going any further let us begin by what

Ecuador’s then President, Rafael Correa, said Assange’s human rights could be at risk and offered him refuge, but his successor Lenin Moreno who took office in 2017 decided to revoke the asylum status of Assange by saying that he has been interfering in foreign affairs and backed out. The very purpose of WikiLeaks was to expose who ignored the rule of law, but the rogue state fails to follow the law, then who should intervene and who should expose? Instead of arresting the messenger, what are the messages that the messenger has brought to the fore? This should be the center of the whole episode. Reacting to the arrest of Assange, US whistleblower Edward Snowden said that the arrest of Julian Assange a “dark moment for press freedom.” Snowden fled to Russia in 2013 after leaking classified document

Stating that Nagaland is ranked 15th in the country under the prescribed sanitation parameters and I quote, “Together, it shall be our endeavor to see that Nagaland is ranked among the top 10 in the country.” Well, firstly, I don’t see any logic in comparing with the other states or for that matter attempt at figuring in the top 10 list. Toilet block is an important facet in the overall gambit of sanitation but the essence is not mere ranking, instead to facilitate attending to a basic human need with dignity and convenience. Defecating in the open is a practice that does not necessarily belittle most residents, which is but a harsh reality in most remote villages that houses substantial populace with negligible income source. 25k to 30k is the minimum requirement for installing a standard toilet block. Day to day circumstance and challenges for the family, therefore, dictates where best to spend whatever little income they earn. Incidentally, to most families, there are more genuine matters to address than the convenience of a toilet facility. At a stage when our country boasts of being one among the fastest growing economy, if not first! it is shameful that sizable number of residents has to put in unnecessary effort to attend to nature’s call. Provision of toilet facility is not a new thing as has been

With regards to this clear statement of Jesus, what are Naga Christians supposed to do with reference to the government of India which is in Nagaland today. I believe all Nagas are obeying Jesus in paying our taxes to the occupational government in our land. We are all paying taxes in the form of our electricity bills, our vehicle and road taxes etc. But here again, we
must remember that the Indian government in our land today is not here out of benevolence for our benefit and prosperity. Far from it, this Indian government is a colonial government just like the Roman colonial government in Palestine in Jesus’ days. Such colonial governments always rules by the power of military might through acts like the Disturbed Area Act and Armed Forces Special Powers Act etc. In a similar manner, the British colonial power also ruled India through many suppressive Acts. Tragically for Nagas, India, after getting her independence from the British, just simply copied those suppressive acts and applied it to Nagas to rule over Nagaland. Another fact that also must be noted is that during the British rule in India, there never were any democratic elections in India. After all no colonial power would ever give a chance to those they are ruling to vote them out of power through a fair
democratic election! To India’s honour, no Indian political organization ever gave their collaboration to the British to rule over them in any legitimate manner. But in the case of Nagas, though the whole Naga nation had refused to participate in the Indian general elections for two consecutive terms (1952-1957), to our shame, some Naga rebels brought an Indian election into our midst in 1963. As a result, today, this Indian government has become the CAESAR of Nagaland. It is also appalling to see that some Nagas (Including some national workers) are desperately trying to merge with this Indian government in our land. In all these nefarious activities, many Nagas are doing many things that Jesus never told us to do. As to how we can remove this CAESAR from our lands in a non-violent manner, I have already shared my suggestions in an article on April 5, 2019 and so will not repeat myself
Where is npsc prelims result?
ver 150 days have passed since around 13 thousand of us first saw our 2018 NPSC CSE question paper for the first time. Ever since, some have accidently memorized the entire question paper over the anticipation that the result will be declared soon; some have counted their scores for the 74th time earlier today; while some have carefully slipped it within some folders or books never to be seen again. Whatever the case may be, there is always that one question we all want the answer for: Where is our prelims result? By this time, UPSC CSE certainly gets the whole mains examination process conducted for the 10,000 candidates that they select out of those 4-5 lakhs candidates who appear for the preliminary exam every year. We are talking national here. Coming back to our state, of course, our state’s commission does declare the answer keys and candidates have queries and corrections and these are bound
to consume some time. But to take more than 150 days to declare the result of a mere 13-15 thousand candidates is painfully astounding. And it’s not like we use the traditional MCQ marking method by pen or pencil where the invigilators have to manually check the sheets with chances of getting caught up in answers where he isn’t sure if it is a marked answer or just a smashed mosquito. It is the same OMR sheet, used by any other recruitment bodies today, that takes a maximum of two minutes to scan 100 sheets (using just a standard OMR sheet checker). Even if the results get declared today, 2 more months have to be reserved before the mains examination is conducted, and there can’t be any compromise on that. So, that’s over 210 days from prelims to mains, which is almost twice the time taken by UPSC for the very same process except for much much more candidates. It’s already a pain in the back
here again. But in conclusion, I wish to reiterate that Christianity is not a mythological religion hanging in thin air or in the imagination of some believers. Jesus, the cornerstone (Ep. 2:20-21) and founder of Christianity was not born in the air and floated back to heaven 2000 years ago. The fact is; Jesus was born during the reign of Caesar Augustus and crucified during the reign of Caesar Tiberius (Between AD 1 to AD 38). He was really sentenced to be crucified in the court of Pontius Pilate during Herod’s reign in Palestine. All these facts are recorded in the Bible like in Luke 2:1-3 etc. Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary and really walked the dusty streets of Palestine. During his life on earth, he was hungry, thirsty, angry, wept and was finally hung on Golgotha in a wooden cross. These records were stated both by the Apostles and secular historians like Josephus. And
after his resurrection, he commissioned his followers to go into the entire world to preach and practice his gospel of spiritual, political and economic salvation (liberty) from the hands of those who oppress us. Here, how one wish that someone else can go out into the world and practice our Christian beliefs and obligations on our behalves while we can stay away in our own comfort zones. But such a wish is no different from wishing that Jesus had never entered into human history but had simply lived in heaven and acted from there only. As for me, the moment I pick up my own cross to follow Jesus, I am not confronted by some heavenly problems. I am instead, confronted and overwhelmed by spiritual as well as earthly problems that are political, economic and social in nature. LS 2nd phase: 1,644 candidates in fray
New Delhi, Apr 13 (IANS): A total of 251 candidates contesting in the second phase of Lok Sabha polls have declared criminal cases filed against themselves, including 167 with serious criminal cases, according to an analysis of self-sworn affidavits of 1,590 candidates by the National Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). While there are a total of 1,644 candidates in fray for the second phase due on Thursday (April 18), 54 candidates could not be analysed due to unavailability of their properly scanned and complete affidavits, a statement from ADR said. The report shared by the ADR said that among major parties, 23 out of 53 candidates from the Congress, 16 out of 51 candidates from the Bharatiya Janata Party, 16 out of 80 candidates from the Bahujan Samaj Party, three out of 22 candidates from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, 11 out of 24 candidates from the Dravida Munnetra Ka-

Toll booth employee beaten, dragged on SUV bonnet Gurugram, Apr 13 (IANS): A toll booth employee on Saturday was dragged on the bonnet of an SUV and beaten up by its occupants, after it broke through the boom barrier of the toll plaza here, police said. The incident took place on National Highway 8. The victim, Ashok Kumar, is employed with the Kherki Daula Toll Plaza of Delhi-Gurugram Expressway. Around 12.40 p.m., an Innova car in which four persons were travelling, hit the boom barrier in a bid to run away without paying the toll tax. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) south Gurugram, Rajesh Singh said Kumar appeared in front of the car in an attempt to stop it. The driver, instead of slowing down, sped on, following which Kumar fell on the car bonnet and was dragged for 4-5 km.
Kumar said he grabbed the car’s wipers to save himself from falling. “It was almost an abduction. The car occupants took me to an isolated place after driving for some 7-8 km toward Manesar. They stopped at a isolated place and beat me up badly,” he said in his complaint. One of them introduced himself as Sumit Singh, the owner of the car, a resident of Khandsa village. “He threatened me with dire consequences if I report the incident to the police,” Kumar alleged. He said he “approached the police even as the car occupants threatened to kill him and his family members”. The accused fled after assaulting him. “The entire incident was caught on CCTV cameras. We are in a process of analysing it and managed to identify the accused. He will be arrested soon,” the DCP said.

Hindustan Janta Party’s Solapur (Maharashtra) candidate Shrivenkateswar Maha Swamiji declared assets worth only Rs 9, while two independent candidates from Tamil Nadu’s Mayiladuthurai, Rajesh P. and Raja N., declared assets worth Rs 100. The analysis also showed that there are 52 candidates with assets worth more than Rs 1 crore who have not declared their income tax details. Among them are Independent candidates from West Bengal’s Raiganj, Binoy Kumar Das, and Bangalore Central, C.B.K. Rama, who have declared assets worth over Rs 18 crore and Rs 15 crore respectively.

KNSK termed the allegations as “baseless”. New Delhi, Apr 13 (IANS): Tense situation prevailed in the Mayapuri Industrial area of the national capital following clashes between local traders and the security personnel during a sealing drive on Saturday. BJP promises rice, salt, pulses at Re 1 in Odisha Bhubaneswar, Apr 13 (IANS): Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will provide rice, dal and salt at Re 1 per kg to 3.26 crore people if the party came to power in Odisha. “If the BJP comes to power in Odisha, it will provide 5 kg rice, 500 gram dal and an equal amount of salt to 3.26 crore beneficiaries at Re 1 per kg under the National Food Security Scheme (NFSA),” Pradhan said while addressing an election rally in Choudwar in Cuttack district on Saturday. Under the NFSA, 5 kg rice, 500 gm dal and 500 gm salt will be provided for Re 1, while the Odisha government is providing rice to the
poor at Re 1 per kg. The Minister said the central government is giving Rs 29 subsidy on every kg of rice, while the state’s share was only Rs 2. The beneficiary is paying just Re 1 to buy a kg of rice, priced at Rs 31 per kg, he added. He said “people have made up their mind to uproot the corrupt government from Odisha and establish the BJP’s double-engine government”. He said the BJP government would upgrade all the hospitals in in Odisha and appoint doctors to provide better health care facility. It would also expand the irrigation network through a dedicated fund of Rs 1 lakh crore and enhance cold storage facilities, he added.

The contentious reference had not only peeved Sikhs of Canada, but it had perturbed the Sikh diaspora across the world and the Canadian Sikh community had been challenging the government to either remover the reference from its 2018 report or to make the basis behind such inference or reference public. The Canadian Sikh community, office-bearers of Canadian gurdwaras and the Sikh advocacy groups, including, the World Sikh Organisation (WSO), had been expressing their outrage and hurt feelings by holding a chain of meetings and by giving representations to the Canadian government in this regard since the release of the controversial report. New Delhi, Apr 13 (IANS): The direct tax target of Rs 13.80 lakh crore for the current fiscal may be scaled down in the regular Budget to be announced after the formation of the new government at the Centre, a source said. “The Department of Revenue may pitch for lowering the current target of Rs 13.80 crore in the Budget. It is difficult to grow 21 per cent (over the actual revised direct tax collections of Rs 11.4 lakh crore). The current target is a huge order to be filled. Kim said he would wait until the end of the year “for the US to make a courageous decision” on another meeting, state media reported, after his most recent summit with Trump in Vietnam broke down and both sides left without agreement. s India commemorates the 100th anniversary of the massacre of hundreds of innocent Indians by British forces at the Jallianwala Bagh, members of the film industry, including Amitabh Bachchan, Sunny Deol, Bhumi Pednekar and Madhur Bhandarkar, paid tributes to the martyrs. A century ago, British forces led by Brigadier General Reginald Dyer opened fire on hundreds of unarmed, innocent Indians, including women and children, who were protesting peacefully against the oppressive Rowlatt Act of the British government on

n a brand new interview with Midlands Metalheads Radio, legendary Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen spoke about how he first developed his playing style. He said: “My first guitar was given to me on my fifth birthday — I was five years old — but I didn’t start playing it until I was seven, after seeing [Jimi] Hendrix smash up a guitar on TV. But that wasn’t a musical influence — it was just that seeing that happen, I thought it was cool. So I started playing guitar that same day I saw that programme… And then I heard Deep Purple ‘Fireball’ and started learning those things. You’ve gotta remember — I was very, very young; I was just a little kid. I was seven years old. So I learned how to play this stuff inside out, pretty much. And then, of course, I heard an album
called ‘Selling England By The Pound’ by Genesis, and that was a lot of chord progressions and inflections that I’d never heard before, because they weren’t directly rock and roll [or] blues style. So I listened to a lot of Bach records and Vivaldi and Beethoven. My Marshall stacks and my electric guitar never changed, but my choice of notes changed. So the guitar players from all those years, they never influenced me into what I’m doing today. My influences that shaped my style today are all Classical violinists [and composers like] Bach, Vivaldi, Paganini, Tchaikovsky. That’s very important to remember.” Yngwie released a new album, “Blue Lightning”, on March 29 via Mascot Label Group. On the disc, Yngwie pays homage to those from the blues world who have fuelled his artistic spirit for so long. “Blue Lightning” also includes four original tunes that bring to the fore Malmsteen’s love for the blues. “I have always featured songs with a blues groove on albums,” he said in a press release. “So, having my own material in this vein was very natural for me.” (Blabbermouth)

According to Deadline, the upcoming sequel reportedly has a new writer working on the script, screenwriter Amy Jump, reports dailymail.co.uk. Vikander, who portrayed explorer Lara Croft in last year’s reboot, is said to have liked how her character played out in Jump’s screenplay. Vikander’s return has yet to be confirmed, and so far no details about the
plot have been made available. Jump’s writing credits include “Free Fire”, “A Field in England”, and “HighRise”. “Tomb Raider” amassed $274,650,803 in the box office worldwide when it was released in 2018, according to Box Office Mojo. Bottas, who won the season opener in Australia and leads defending champion Hamilton by one point in the standings, was the third different driver to take pole this season in three races. “The lap was OK, not completely how I wanted. Luckily it was good enough for pole,” smiled the Finn, who pipped Hamilton by 0.023 seconds after setting a best time of one minute 31.547. “Lewis also managed to improve a lot during the qualifying and it was superclose.” The pole was a first for Bottas since Russia last September and the seventh of his career. Mercedes have won five of the last seven races. Hamilton sounded happy just to be on the front row, despite six previous poles in Shanghai, after looking out of sorts in practice. Mohali, Apr 13 (PTI): Sensational fifties from Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers overshadowed Chris Gayle’s unbeaten 99 as Royal Challengers finally snapped a sixmatch losing streak this IPL season with an eight-wicket win over Kings XI Punjab on Saturday. Kohli (67) in company of AB de Villiers (59 not out) scripted a superb run chase, sharing a 85-run stand to lay the foundation. Marcus Stoinis (28 off 16) played a crucial cameo to take the team through with four balls to spare. With this victory, RCB also avoided the ignominy
of most successive losses for a team at the start of an IPL season. Chasing 174 to win, Parthiv Patel and Kohli gave RCB a flying start, amassing 43 off 23 balls but the lefthanded opener was caught by Mayank Agarwal off R Ashwin in the 4th over. Mohammad Shami then gave Punjab a glimmer of hope when over he dismissed Kohli, who pulled one straight to M Ashwin as RCB slipped to 128 for two. The Greek left back, who has 25 league appearances this season, sustained the injury during their 3-2 FA Cup semi-final victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers last Sunday. “I’m not sure about Holebas. We need time to see how he is. He will not be ready for the next game, for sure,” Gracia told the club’s website semi-final victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday. Fellow defender Adam Masina, who came on for Holebas in the match at Wembley Stadium, is expected to fill in again. “Masina is ready. He came on and did very well and in other games as well.
