ACAUT ASKS SPEAKER TO ALLOW CASE AGAINST T.R. ZELIANG, VIKHEHO SWU D I M A P U R , A PR 1 1 (NPN): Taking serious note of the controversy over purported signature of former chief minister T.R. Zeliang on chief minister’s road development fund list, ACAUT demanded suo moto action against advisor Finance, T.R. Zeliang and R&B minister Vikheho Swu. ACAUT Nagaland has submitted a representation to the Speaker Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) demanding suo moto legal action against advisor (Finance) and former chief minister T.R. Vikheho Swu (representing 13 Pughoboto A/C/) for alleged connivance with regard to CM’s Road Development Fund (CMRDF). ACAUT through its media cell, pointed out that T.R. Zeliang vacated the chief minister’s chair after an uprising against “wrong policy imposed upon the

public”, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezistsü took over as chief minister on February 22, 2017. After being “demoted from chief minister” ACAUT said T.R. Zeliang on March 8, 2017 signed a list of beneficiaries for Chief Minister’s Road Development Fund (CMRDF) for 2016-17 in the capacity of chief minister. ACAUT said Zeliang then endorsed the list to Y. Vikheho Swu minister of Roads & Bridges for further action. It said that despite knowing the fact that T.R. Zeliang was no more the chief minister, Vikheho Swu minister of R&B “connived” by endorsing the list on March 9, 2017 to the CE (PWD) Roads and Bridges with the note “to process for Tender”. Zeliang and so was liable for offence committed for abetment of commission of crime. ACAUT also maintained that T.R. Zeliang had “misrepresented himself as chief minister” after demitting office and so his act under the law did not grant immunity from legal action for commitment of grave offence. ACAUT said T.R. Zeliang was not only a long time legislator and cabinet minister but experienced in statecraft having occupied the highest post in the state and so cannot be allowed to go scot free. ACAUT also said that Vikheho Swu was also liable for abetment of offence and punishment and that “ignorance of law is not an excuse”. Every citizen in equal before the law irrespective

No spl category status 7th RoP to come into to any state: Centre force from June 1

New Delhi, Apr 11 (PTI): The government has no plans to grant special category status to any state, Minister of State for Planning Rao Inderjit Singh told the Rajya Sabha Tuesday. The minister was replying to a calling attention motion of Congress member KVP Ramachandra Rao who wanted convening of a meeting of the National Development Council (NDC) to discuss the necessity for continuance of the concept of special category status. Members of the Congress, the Left and Trinamool Congress, however, were not satisfied with the minister’s reply and staged a walkout. He said, “Instead of criticising the government for not giving special category status (to states), I would suggest they should go to their respective states and ensure fiscal discipline and develop their states by virtue of the extra Rs 1.78 lakh crore that we have given from the Planning Commission.” The last state to be accorded the special category status was Uttarakhand way back in 2001 and no state has been given the status after that, the minister added. Singh said the basic principle for according the special category status to a state was the approval from the NDC. The minister also said the last government could have asked the NDC to approve the status for the state but it did not do so even when they were in power. He said after taking over, the BJP government gave 10 per cent extra grant, amounting to Rs 1.78 lakh crore per year, to the states through the Finance Commission to take care of their fiscal requirements. “The present government, over the past three years, has been thinking and acting out-of-box and following this approach, it has done away with the Planning Commission,” the minister said.

Kerala law minister AK Balan called Bhagwat’s suggestion “an aggression” against the food habits of people. “If the Centre dares to imple-

ment a blanket ban on cow slaughter and tries to implement beef ban across the country, we would fight it out in the court...” he said. Former spokesman of Syro Malabar Church, Father Paul Thelekkat, said “I see no rationale or legality in a section of people imposing their dietary habits on the others in a democratic society.” Speaking to reporters at the BJP headquarters at Panaji, Goa deputy speaker Michael Lobo said beef ban issue would never come up in the state, as beef was a part of culinary heritage of the minority community, which comprises 33% of the population. BJD spokesperson Samir Ranjan Dash said while it was a crime to slaughter a healthy cow in Odisha, a blanket ban was inappropriate. Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh hailed Bhagwat for the proposal, but the Kolkata Municipal Corporation mayor Sovan Chatterjee said there was no point in pondering over such an “absurd” opinion. Alan Gonmei inspecting the flower exhibition at Kohima, Tuesday. (NP) Correspondent KOHIMA, APR 11 (NPN): Secretary of Horticulture department Alan Gonmei said that in order to tap full potential of the floriculture sector in the state, growers needed to tackle challenges like infrastructure facilities, guidance to the flower growers and the seasonal demand as well as unsuitable agro-climatic conditions. Addressing the inaugural programme of the Nagaland Flower Growers’ Society (NFGS) flower show-cum-competition today held at The Heritage, Old DC Bungalow, the secretary said the challenges needed to be tackled through

a comprehensive effort of the government as well as the stakeholders. He said the activity should become more remunerative to the farmers with appropriate market oriented extension approaches. Gonmei said the commercial floriculture in Nagaland received attention very late as compared to the other states, however, he said when the department of horticulture through H M N E H s c h e m e wa s introduced, the sector had gone on to become one of the most successful sectors in horticulture and the state was today known for its quality cut flowers across the country.

He said it was a matter of great satisfaction that floriculture had changed the lives of many housewives, entrepreneurs and unemployed youths and said there were numerous success stories that bore witness to this act. Gonmei said the future of floriculture in the state was rosy and may well be the sunrise industry of the state which needed to be tapped to its full potential for providing employment, generating revenue and income for an economically sound Naga society. The programme was chaired by assistant general secretary NFGS Meyievino Theluo.

PAC Chairman K.V. Thomas on Tuesday said the committee has found “nothing that the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh or the PMO (Prime Minister’s Office) did out of the way”. The PAC is set to present its report to Parliament on Wednesday. “You will get the entire report tomorrow. One important point is that there is nothing against the then Prime Minister in it... Everything is black and white,” Thomas told reporters outside the House. “There was a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, decisions were taken, and when the minutes (of the meeting) came, the then Sports Ministry said the spirit of the decisions was not carried in the minutes.”

K.V. Thomas “There is nothing that Manmohan Singh or the PMO has done out of the way,” he added. Thomas said there was unanimity on the findings and conclusions of the report, and pointed out that in the 24-member PAC, only four members were from the Congress while the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had 12 members. On the delay in presenting the report on the Commonwealth Games, Thomas said it was due to the large number of reports that the PAC had to go through. In the last three years, the PAC under Thomas held 157 meetings and presented 73 reports. The

Terror incidents down by 25% after surgical strikes: Govt

Hansraj Ahir New Delhi, APR 11 (AGENCIES): Terror incidents in Jammu and Kashmir have come down by around 25% after the surgical strikes carried out by the Indian Army in Pakistanoccupied Kashmir (PoK) last year. Minister of State for Home Hansraj Ahir said in the Lok Sabha that 193 terrorist incidents took place in Jammu and Kashmir

between April 1 and September 30, 2016. But between October 1, 2016 and March 31 this year the State reported 155 terror attacks, he said while replying to a written question. The Indian Army had carried out surgical strikes against terror launch pads in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on September 29, 2016. Also, there was a drastic reduction in the number of stone-pelting incidents in Jammu and Kashmir after the surgical strikes, the Minister said. There were 2,325 incidents of stone-pelting reported in six months — from April to September 2016. However, the number has come down to 411 in the next six months — from October 2016 to March 2017.

74th report is slated to be tabled in Parliament on Wednesday. THomas said the PAC report on the 2G spectrum sale will be tabled in Parliament before April 30, which is the last working day of the current committee. The outgoing PAC Chairman also said that he has suggested to the Speaker that media should be allowed to listen to the deliberations of the PAC during its meetings. “The other suggestion I mooted is that the PAC recommendations should be binding on the government,” Thomas said. Thomas had earlier also mooted the suggestion that the PAC Chairman too should be consulted while appointing the Comptroller and Auditor General of India. “The PAC is an institution that must be strengthened. Persons may come and go, but the institution must be preserved. It is mother of all parliamentary committees,” said Thomas, who headed the PAC for three consecutive terms since 2014.

Will appear before Enforcement Tharoor slams Directorate, says Himachal CM Jadhav death Shimla, Apr 11 (IANS): Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh on Tuesday said he will appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) this week for questioning in a money laundering case registered against him. “I will go to Delhi on April 13 at the notice of the Enforcement Directorate,” the Chief Minister told reporters here. Without mincing words, he added: “If the Income Tax Department desires, it also can summon me. I am ready to give reply to all its questions regarding my income.” Virbhadra Singh has been asked to appear before the Enforcement Directorate to get his statement recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The agency had summoned him earlier too but he had then excused himself by referring to his official commitments. It has already questioned his wife Pratibha Singh and son Vikramaditya Singh. Earlier this week, the ED had attached Virbhadra Singh’s Delhi farmhouse worth Rs 27.29 crore in the case. The agency’s move came after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a chargesheet against

sentence by Pak

Virbhadra Singh Virbhadra Singh and others last month for allegedly amassing assets worth Rs 6.03 crore. A court in Delhi on Monday fixed April 24 to consider the CBI chargesheet. The ED had filed a criminal case under the PMLA against Virbhadra Singh, his wife Pratibha, Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) agent Anand Chauhan, his associate Chunni Lal, Joginder Singh Ghalta, Prem Raj, Lawan Kumar Roach, Vakamullah Chandrashekhara and Ram Prakash Bhatia in 2015 following the CBI’s FIR dated September 23, 2015. The case was registered after a preliminary inquiry found that Virbhadra Singh, as Union Minister from 2009 to 2012, allegedly accumulated assets worth Rs 6.03 crore, which were disproportionate to his known sources of income.

New Delhi, Apr 11 (IANS): Cong ress MP Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday slammed Pakistan for the death sentence on alleged Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav, terming it an “assault” on international laws and conventions. “What Pakistan is doing is not only an assault on India, it is an assault on international laws, international conventions that affect everybody. “There are certain countries that finance and arm the Pakistani military. Those countries must be told by us that if this can be done to an Indian today, it can be done to one of their nationals tomorrow,” Tharoor said in the Lok Sabha. “The extremely important thing for us is to uphold the principles. Thirteen times this gentleman was denied consular access, which is a basic right. “Geneva conventions have been violated by Pakistan... This is an extremely serious matter,” he added. The opposition and the treasury benches in Parliament on Tuesday jointly expressed solidarity with Jadhav, who was awarded capital punishment by a Pakistani Field General Court Martial on Monday.

Parliament passes HIV & AIDS bill

NEW DELHI, APR 11 (Agencies): The Parliament on Tuesday passed a vital HIV & AIDS (Prevention and Control) Bill, ensuring equal rights while seeking treatment, education and job by people living with HIV. Terming the unanimous passage of the Bill in the Lok Sabha as “historic”, health minister J P Nadda said the government “stands committed for free treatment of HIV patients.” The bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha on March 21. The total number of people living with HIV in India is estimated at 21.17 lakhs, whereas around 86000 new HIV infections were reported in 2015, showing 66% decline in new infections from 2000. In 2015 around 68000 people died of AIDS related causes nationally. The Bill assumes signif-

icance as it protects people living with HIV from specific acts of discrimination by the state, or any other person. It also lays down penal provisions for any discrimination practised against a person with HIV/AIDS and breach of confidentiality. Under the new law, central and state governments are obliged to provide for anti-retroviral therapy (ART) and management of opportunistic infections (infections that take advantage of weakness in the immune system and occur frequently). The protection mandated under the law extends to the fields of employment, healthcare services, educational services, public facilities, property rights, holding public office, and insurance.

Calling the Bill ‘people centric’, Nadda said the new law will strengthen the rights of the people living with HIV. “It is not the case that before coming of this bill, these people (infected with HIV ) were not empowered but with the passage of this bill they will get more powers,” he said. Though the Bill was initially introduced in Parliament by the UPA government, the amendments to the HIV and AIDS (Prevention and Control) Bill, 2014 were revived by the Modi government in July last year. Since then the health ministry has made various changes to the original Bill to address several concerns raised by the HIV community as well as state governments. For

instance, the Bill now makes anti-retroviral treatment a legal right for all HIV/AIDS patients. It has also adopted “test and treat” policy which means any person testing positive will be entitled for free treatment by the state and central government. Earlier, this was restricted by a CD4 count rate. It also provides for confidentiality of HIV-related information and makes it necessary to get informed consent for undertaking HIV tests, medical treatment and research. The new legislation has provisions to safeguard the property rights of HIV positive people. Every HIV infected person below the age of 18 years has the right to reside in a shared household and enjoy the facilities of the household.

Srinagar bypoll: 38 polling stations repoll NEW DELHI, APR 11 (AGENCIES): The Election Commission on Tuesday ordered repoll in 38 polling stations of the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency which witnessed large-scale violence during the by-election on Sunday. In a letter to the state Chief Electoral Officer, the Commission said it is ordering repoll based on the reports of the returning officers and observers. The repoll will be held on April 13.

Supreme Court to hear pleas on note ban

NEW DELHI, APR 11 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court today said that it would hear after summer vacation a batch of pleas seeking a grace period for exchanging demonetised currency notes. A bench comprising Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justices D Y Chandrachud and S K Kaul said let these matters be fixed for hearing after the summer vacation as counsel for the petitioner sought time to respond to the recent reply of the Centre on the issue. The Centre had recently informed the apex court that it has taken a “conscious decision” not to extend the period beyond December 30 last year for exchanging the demonetised currency notes. It had said it was not legally bound to come out with a fresh notification to grant grace period or window for depositing scrapped currency notes. The Centre had filed an affidavit in response to petitions by private individuals and a firm seeking a window like those given to NRIs and people who were abroad during the period of demonetisation to deposit the scrapped currency notes with the Reserve Bank of India.

Cow slaughter: Kolkata beef dealers to meet KMC

Kolkata, Apr 11 (IANS): The Calcutta Beef Dealers’ Association plans to meet the Kolkata civic body regarding a change in cow slaughter timings to check illegal abattoirs in the city. “In the state-owned Tangra slaughterhouse, cows are slaughtered between 1.00 p.m. and 5.00 p.m. The meat is delivered to shops in the night... So for consumers who want to have access to fresh beef, the option before them is beef sold by illegal slaughterhouses,” Mohammed Ali, President, Calcutta Beef Dealers’ Association told IANS. Ali said the body will recommend to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation that the timings be shifted to early in the morning. “If the slaughter process takes place between 5.00 a.m. and 10.00 a.m. then the beef can be delivered during the same day to consumers. So this means, illegal abattoirs will not get a chance to ply their business,” Ali said. In addition, Ali said it would also ease the availability of beef during festive season when the demand is high. “We will seek an appointment with KMC officials soon,” he added.

268 ceasefire violations by Pak in a year

New Delhi, Apr 11 (IANS): Pakistan’s 268 ceasefire violations along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir in the last 12 months led to nine deaths, the government informed Parliament on Tuesday. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre said the Indian Army retaliated appropriately to the ceasefire violations. According to data given by the minister, a majority of these violations happened in just two months -- 78 in October 2016 in which two persons died, and 88 in November that killed five others. “All ceasefire violations are taken up with Pakistan authorities at the appropriate levels through established mechanism of hotlines, flag meetings and weekly exchanges between the Director Generals of Military Operations of the two countries,” Bhamre said.

Ban on bans

hat RSS supremo Mohan Bhagwat demanded is now no longer a wish but something that the Modi government cannot ignore- nationwide ban on cow slaughter. The love for the cow has caused tragic deaths and physical injuries on scores of people across India just because they were either transporting cows or suspected of eating beef etc. It will however, be another matter with regard to banning cow slaughter and beef in India’s north east region. It may be noted that three north eastern states-Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh – have a majority of people eating beef besides port etc. After the BJP stormed to power in Uttar Pradesh on its own, the UP government has made no bones about its intention to completely strangulate cow slaughter and beef eating. There have been scores of goons imposing their edict against transportation of cow or eating beef in UP which have eventually taken the form of forcing closure of slaughter houses. These developments including the RSS demand for ban on cow slaughter is being viewed with intense by the people of Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram-majority of who are Christians and who consider beef as part of their normal diet along with pork. In order to reassure the people of these states, regional BJP leaders have said that the UP experiment will never be imposed on the north east people. The states of the North East have large tribal and Christian populations, people whose food habits are vastly different from those in the Indian mainland. Cow slaughter is not banned in Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura. In Manipur, the maharaja proscribed it in 1939 but beef is still consumed in large quantities. In Assam, only cattle with “fit for slaughter” certificates may be felled. Beef and pork, being cheaper meats, are in higher demand than chicken or mutton. Meat and fish can be dried, cured or fermented. All three Christian-majority states are bound for elections in 2018. The BJP has said that if it came to power, there will be no ban on beef. They also said that the central leadership was aware of cultural differences in the region. In Manipur during the recent election, hill people conducted feasts where beef was an important part of the menu and where the tribal BJP leaders also partook. Beef – the eating of it, the cooking of it, the killing of cows to cook and eat it – was not a bone of contention. The BJP understands too well that keeping the Hindutva brand of ideology will not endear it to the people who have totally different cultures. The party had to evolve its core ideology on food habits in Kerala where the state unit had distanced itself away from the anti-beef brigade saying they do not support beef ban. Even in Goa, the home of hardy Goanese who love their food, the BJP has had to keep its anti-beef rhetoric low by saying it respected the community’s choice of food. That however, did not stop the enforcement on movement of cow from nearby Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. It is time that BJP focuses its concerns on poverty, rising crimes and unemployment instead of using cow issue as a red herring.

DailyDevotion Complete and Effective Divinity

If we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection… —Romans 6:5 Co-Resurrection. The proof that I have experienced crucifixion with Jesus is that I have a definite likeness to Him. The Spirit of Jesus entering me rearranges my personal life before God. The resurrection of Jesus has given Him the authority to give the life of God to me, and the experiences of my life must now be built on the foundation of His life. I can have the resurrection life of Jesus here and now, and it will exhibit itself through holiness. The idea all through the apostle Paul’s writings is that after the decision to be identified with Jesus in His death has been made, the resurrection life of Jesus penetrates every bit of my human nature. It takes the omnipotence of God— His complete and effective divinity— to live the life of the Son of God in human flesh. The Holy Spirit cannot be accepted as a guest in merely one room of the house— He invades all of it. And once I decide that my “old man” (that is, my heredity of sin) should be identified with the death of Jesus, the Holy Spirit invades me. He takes charge of everything. My part is to walk in the light and to obey all that He reveals to me. Once I have made that important decision about sin, it is easy to “reckon” that I am actually “dead indeed to sin,” because I find the life of Jesus in me all the time (Romans 6:11). Just as there is only one kind of humanity, there is only one kind of holiness— the holiness of Jesus. And it is His holiness that has been given to me. God puts the holiness of His Son into me, and I belong to a new spiritual order.

Post-mortem

The stagnant Nagaland I I am well aware that every aspirant political candidate promises big changes and development for the society as though they spend their personal money and belongings for the cause of Nagaland. The great deficit of Rs. 463.52 Shows that Nagas still need classes on Political Sciences. Such deficit is an expression of Nagas’ political face. The Government of Nagaland is always in deficit, but some Ministers and MLAs are becoming richer than the Government. Did any Naga Ministers and MLAs faced deficit in their personal accounts? May be money grows inside their kitchen. Has there been any surplus in the financial status of Government in the history of Nagaland? We demand more and do less. This is what we are most satisfied. The demand of people for good road is fulfilled to the extent that it last for just two or three months. I had the privilege of visiting many towns and villages of Nagaland. In a certain place, the villagers were so excited with the newly constructed road (just 8 kms) connecting to a town. I too traveled with a smile on my face three to four times. But my next visit after five months was a sad journey to be remembered (to be precise, June 2013). The bitumen road has now turned into some kind of strange land. The road lasted only for five months (February–June). The road disappeared. Did the contractors took back the blacktop road to his house? Oh! that cannot be. We cheat our own people and talk about better changes and development. We have developed better ways of cheating and earning easy money for ourselves. I am sure that our contractors and engineers are no less than others outside the State. The same is with the roads inside Kohima and Dimapur towns. It is strange but Nagas are used to with such kind of life. Nothing seems to last in Nagaland. We may have the best contractors and engineers but the necessity of putting one’s best in one’s own work is still far away from us. A constr uction of small panchayat, few class rooms and rostrum may cost twenty to thirty lakhs. It comes to the double

of its actual expenditure. Most money gets burnt in the hot hands of few individuals. Constructing one’s own house with six – seven rooms does not show that much expenditure. Sometimes, we need to be ashamed of our poor performances and works, and appreciate ourselves at our success. It’s a high time that success overcome our many failures. All developmental works stop at Nagaland gate. The rest of India continue to progress and develop whereas Nagas boast about themselves having nothing. Are there any reliable factories and industries in Nagaland? With nothing in hand, we aim high dreams. We demand sovereignty, freedom and independence as though we are selfsufficient. We know only how to change second hand clothes into branded ones. Guwahati has become one of the fastest developing cities of India. The road in and outside the city are admirable. The skyscrapers and shopping malls are built with latest technologies. In Nagaland, even to build your own house and shops, you have to pay illegal taxes to numerous groups. With such negative atmosphere, how do we expect Nagaland to grow and develop to maturity? Shillong has been accorded with much cleanliness and natural beauties that are well maintained by the Government. Lakhs of tourist flow to it annually to enjoy the serenity of place and people. Such cities progressed and developed because they were meticulous in implementing projects at the best of their ability. Failures and corruptions may exist even there yet they have gone far ahead of Nagaland. Nagas are living 50 years behind others. Can we call Kohima and Dimapur as cities? Just call them towns. They are still in their childhood stage (they struggled even at their infancy). They are still immature. Their immaturity is caused by many reasons. There are many octopus in Nagaland. No one is totally free to work and develop towns and villages. Therefore, no companies may set up their factories or industries in Nagaland (because of uncountable sharing system). The Government share, the ministers share, the under-

Imbroglio in the recent e-tendering of by-pass DMP-KMA

do not suffer fools, I get irritated and angry when those who should know better, exhibit symptoms of idiocy; but anyone who has the least pretentions of knowing me, will tell you that I do not hate anyone. What I hate, with a vehemence bordering on murderous rage, is Injustice. Any form of injustice perpetrated on anyone triggers all that is wild and vengeful in me. I don’t know whether it is due to the fact that my father lived by the code of Fairness and Respect to All or because the Irish Christian Brothers tried to instil in all students of our school the belief that Bullying, i.e. picking on someone smaller or weaker than you, was the lowliest act that a gentleman could commit; but I hate injustice. We Nagas have become a nation of oppressors, which is a more polite way of saying that we have become a nation of bullies. We cheat and exploit each other in every aspect of our lives, but that doesn’t bother me as much as the fact that we are committing the greatest injustices on our Eastern Naga Brothers and Sisters; not so much to those who live in the towns of Nagaland, but to those who live in the forgotten nooks and crannies that make up our border with Myanmar, and the various ignored pockets of Tuensang, Mon and Kiphire. A friend of mine related how, when his wife was given a “Punishment Posting” to a remote village bordering Myanmar, in Tuensang District, they had to walk for two days to reach the village. How the Villagers were so grateful for the arrival of a teacher, a teacher which they were constitutionally and morally entitled to; how the students would voluntarily sweep their house, cook for them, and fetch water and hew firewood for them. Their thirst for knowledge far superseding everything else. Then LuntsubaMerr Naga, a Facebook friend asked me to “Like” a Facebook Page, titled”The MIMI Outlook:The Voice of the Unheard”. Then again, I had what was supposed to be an acrimonious(on his part, not mine) exchange on Facebook with a Khiamniungan lad, but which turned into an part comic, part affectionate repartee; and which led me to visit his Facebook Page. The pictures posted on The Mimi Outlook and ChilKhiamKhiam’sProfile Page drew involuntary tears from my eyes.Images of boys, who should be playing without a care in the world, carrying firewood; and those of little girls, who should be skipping about merrily, carrying their younger brothers and sisters on their backs, taking on the role of their parents, while the parents toiled away in their distant fields, come rain or shine. It enrages me no end when I think of all the injustices we commit on each other. In an earlier letter titled, “Missing the Forest for the Trees”, I mentioned how we were so engrossed in the symptoms/trees of corruption, like bad roads, irregular electricity etc. that we were missing the fact that Nagaland had become a forest of corruption. Half of that forest comprises of our Eastern Naga Brothers and Sisters; and which begs the question, “Who is responsible for that?” Thinking of it has led me to the following conclusions:1. We “Advanced Tribes” are partly responsible for it, in that we divert the funds meant for them into our pockets, as we do all funds that come within reach

of our greedy paws. But the greater sin we commit on them is by teaching the few of them who manage to escape the cycle of poverty and hardship;our evil and venial ways of corruption. We teach them the Concepts of Christianity and show them the Ways of Satan. They imitate our sins in the belief that it is the way of “Advanced People” and “Modernity”. They see how easy or sins rest on our conscience, and think that they should do the same. We are their Shepherds, it our bounden duty to guide them along the paths that are Good and Righteous, instead, we lead them into the Quagmire of Corruption. May the Good Lord that watches over them strike our right eye and our right hand, may our right eye be blinded and our right arm be withered for falling short of our responsibility to them. For I believe that I AM my Brother’s Keeper. 2. But the greater responsibility for their hardship and suffering lies on the heads of the Legislators and Bureaucrats from the Eastern Naga Tribes. We “Advanced Nagas” know exactly how we are being cheated by our own Legislators and Bureaucrats but we choose to keep silent, unless we feel the pinch of corruption directly. But your people are ignorant of their rights and entitlements; it is for you, The Chosen Few, who have managed to enjoy the rights and privileges of the “Advanced Nagas” to fight for the same rights and privileges for the rest of your people. A Native American (Red Indian) once said that there were two dogs living inside him. One was a Good Dog and the other was an Evil Dog. The good and evil dogs in him were constantly fighting; and he did good if the good dog won and evil if the evil dog won. When asked who usually won the fight, he replied that the dog he fed the most won. We “Advanced Nagas” have fed the evil dog in us to such an extent that evil seems to have pervaded our entire being, and the good dog in us has been starved to near death. Unless we take drastic measures, there seems to be no hope for redemption for us. But you, my Eastern Naga Brothers and Sisters, still have a chance. Feed the good dog in you just a little bit more, and you are sure to lead your people out of their hardship and misery. Whether we believe in Divine Justice, Karma or the Laws of Nature, one thing in this world is certain, nothing remains the same; God, Karma and Nature move in circles. What is on top goes below, and that below ends up on top. The time you spend on top is determined by how you treat those below you. I have seen many of our Eastern Naga Brothers and Sisters in our homes. They see us whine and squabbleamidst the plenty that we own; while they remain silent and uncomplaining with the little that they have. They are honest, hardworking and sincere. They seek education and to learn our ways. Treat them well and show them the ways of Good by example, so that the Good Lord may treat you with the same Compassion and Mercy that you treat them. For I have noticed their intelligence; and, as God is my Witness, the day is not so far off that they will rise above us. May they treat us better than we have treated them. T

he level of corruption reached an epic high on April 6 when bidders were threatened and stopped from submitting their tender documents at the chief engineer PWD (R&B) Office in Kohima. Global tenders were floated via e-tendering and were published in the local dailies on March 6 for the bid for construction of new two lane capital road by pass, Dimapur to Kohima. As per the guidelines, the hard copy of the tender was to be submitted at the chief engineer office Kohima on or before April 6. To the utter shock of the bidders, some hooligans presumably acting as stooges of “certain” contractors showed themselves in the Office of Chief Engineer. The hooligans guarding various entrances of the Office threatened the bidders and stopped them from submitting their documents. The chief engineer made excuse of the situation and did not accept any other bid documents with the exception of “certain” contractors. The bidders are now left unanswered with the following questions; what was the point of floating global tenders with laid rules and guidelines, if certain contractors were to be unreasonably favoured over the rest? Was the chief engineer intimidated by certain contractors? Does certain contractor enjoy special privileges over others in Nagaland? Isn’t denying equal opportunity and undue favouring an apparent corruption? Khekavi Chishi, Duncan Bosti

grounds share (five to six groups trying to get hold of the Government of India without first uniting themselves), the contractors and engineers share, the neighbours share, etc. We are used to with sharing others wealth and proper ties. The same should not be done with what belongs to us. Please visit places where bricks are sold. A place called ‘Eta Patta’ in the corner of Dimapur is the best examples of sucking poor man’s blood. You are sure to meet good and faithful tax collectors in such a place. They never fail their duty out there. You may want to construct your house out of your own torn pockets, but they will be there to make your trousers and shirts pocketless. Such groups live at the expense of the sweat of others brow. Who gave them such high and shameful privilege of collecting tax out there? If you do not pay them, latest bullets may find its place on your body. The truck may bring your dead body instead of bricks. Who should see that such collections of any sorts be stopped at the proper time? No one dares to do so because life is precious than bullets. Nagas will continue to live under such shadows. Have pity on Nagaland. The best extortion stories exist in Nagaland. Therefore, we have many local tourists than foreign visitors. The lives of many government servants who live from hand to mouth are made even worse by necessarily cutting off 10–20 percent of their salary even before it reaches them. Such money is used to feed rotten and hungry mouths of people and groups who defile the social life. The best option is to let those people/groups to work and give their 10-20 percent salary for the cause of other Nagas. That would serve better than to feed the parasites of Nagaland. Those who live at the expense of others’ hard work are cancerous to Nagaland. So either we stop the growth of such sickness or let Nagaland die a sorrowful death. This step lies in the hands of the public more than political leaders who also help the growth of such sickness. G. L. Khing, Kohima, (tisislawkhing@gmail.com)

The voice of the unheard

Sir,

Appeal to SBI AGM BRO, Mokokchung

The K.C.C loan beneficiaries (2012-2013) of 12 villages under SBI Aghunato would like to write a few points for favor of your immediate response. 1. That, the K.C.C Loan was sanctioned by S.B.I Aghunato and provided to the farmers without following the due process and procedures. The farmers were not issued Bank Passbook and Account number in which they have to deposit the EMI amount for the recovery of KCC loan. Even today, the Bank passbook and the Account number has not been issued, but the SBI Aghunato on the advice of your esteemed office has started deducting the Amount ranging from 3000-5000 from Aug/2016 from every MGNREGA wage payment made to VDB Account of 12 Villages which has the KCC beneficiaries of 2012-13 in SBI Aghunato. 2. The KCC Loanees (2012-13) didn’t know anything about the process undertaken by the AGM BRO, Mokokchung for recovery of KCC Loan and no agreement has been signed by the Loanees for any time bound repayment of Loan. In this world of Justice, even the hardcore criminals are first put to trail and judgments are made basing on the gravity of their crime. But in this case, the real stakeholders were neither informed nor consulted in any stage. But, to our utter surprise three (3) time deductions has been already done from the MGNREGA Wage payments as a recovery of Loan. This entire exercise by your office has caused wide rift among the villagers and the KCC Loanees of 12 villages. Hence, this deduction process which is unjust, devoid of proper process of consultation should be stopped in order not to create misunderstanding. 3. The beneficiaries would also like to inform your office that there are many other outstanding Loans (NPA) under SB1 Aghunato, amounting to crores of Rupees. Hence, as to why only the KCC Loanees 2012-13 were made to repay? Why was the selective policy applied? Are all the other Loans (NPA) under SBI Aghunato waived by SBI AGM BRO. Mokokchung’? 4. The KCC Loanees (2012-13) therefore, inform you not to forcefully harass and torture by deducting the amount from the MGNREGA Wage components and VDB Account but, in the first place issue the Bank passbook and Account Number to the beneficiaries and apply acceptable standard procedures of repayment of KCC loan, on the basis of RBI Directives, that regulates the entire Banking system in India so that, repayment of Loan would be just and not to create any misunderstanding between the Bank and Loanees and among the Villagers. In the light of the above points, the Loanees would like you to halt the forceful deduction of Loan EMI from the VDB Account of the 12 Villages by SBI Aghunato. In the event of any misunderstanding or untoward incidents between the villagers & KCC loanees, the SBI AGM BRO Mokokchung would be held solely responsible. Ahoshe Sumi, chairman KCC beneficiaries 2012-13, Aghunato

seamless input tax credit that should also drive down prices as tax embedding through imposition of tax on tax inflates the final price of a product. By slashing costs and boosting efficiency, GST will result in GDP growth getting a 1-2 percentage point lift, according to experts. Final fitment should be based on effective tax rate to lower tax burden on consumers, they said. “In most consumer products, excise duty is applied on MRP (maximum retail price) less abatement of 30-35%,” said Pratik Jain, leader, indirect tax, PwC. “So, if MRP is 100, effective excise duty works out to 8-9%. When you add a standard VAT of around 13%, the effective rate works out to 21-22%. One would hope that most of these products, which include most FMCG (fastmoving consumer goods) and consumer durables, would be subjected to 18% GST and not 28%.

structure of 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% but has left room for the highest slab to be pegged at 40%. A committee of officials will work out the fitment and the council will take a final call at its next meeting on May 18-19. GST, India’s biggest tax reform in decades, is expected to be rolled out on July 1. The government is keen to avoid price shocks following the switchover to GST and the fitment exercise will be guided by this principle. The GST legislation contains an anti-profiteering clause to ensure that industry passes on tax benefits to consumers by lowering prices where applicable. GST seeks to replace central taxes including central excise, service tax and cesses along with state taxes including value-added tax, purchase tax and entertainment tax by a single levy, thus creating a unified national market. Moreover, industry will be eligible for

NEW DELHI, Apr 11 (Agencies): A number of goods such as cosmetics, shaving creams, shampoo, toothpaste, soap, plastics, paints and some consumer durables could become cheaper under the proposed goods and services tax (GST) regime as most items are likely to be subject to the rate of 18% rather than the higher one of 28%. India is likely to rely on the effective tax rate currently applicable on a commodity to get a fix on the GST slab, said a government official, allowing most goods to make it to the lower bracket. For instance, if an item comes within the 12% excise slab but the effective tax is 8% due to abatement, then the latter will be considered for GST fitment. Going by this formulation, about 70% of all goods could fall in the 18% bracket. The GST Council has finalised a four-tier tax

Mumbai, Apr 11 (PTI): The rupee today recovered some of the lost ground after taking a battering overnight, advancing 6 paise to 64.50 against the US dollar amid mild selling of the American currency by exporters. Weak dollar sentiment overseas largely supported the recovery movement even as heightened geopolitical worries continue to dominate at the global level. A smart relief rally in local equities also kept forex market tone buoyant. The rupee had tumbled by a whopping 28 paise yesterday. Brushing aside global volatility, domestic bourses witnessed a splendid rally, breaking a three-day string of declines on the back of value buying in key blue-chip stocks. Most Asian stocks ended lower. Meanwhile, foreign investors sold shares worth net Rs 716.19 crore on Monday, as per the provisional figures. The greenback fell back in Asian trading, as concerns over tensions with North Korea and Syria largely weighed on US Treasury yields amid fading Fed rate hike fears. Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen struck her usual cautiously upbeat note on the US economy in a speech on Monday, but failed to move the dial for markets either way. not the last step as far as recapitalisation is concerned,” he told the members during the Question Hour. Jaitley said the assessment was that the public sector banks would require about Rs 1.8 lakh crore of capital to be infused in them. “As part of the Indradhanush scheme, the government, from the budgetary resources, had decided to infuse Rs 70,000 crore. “This means Rs 25,000 crore each in the first two years and Rs 10,000 crore this year and another Rs 10,000 crore the next year. The Rs 70,000 crore is to be infused in a phased period of time from the budget,” he said. Jaitley, however, noted that the problem of NPAs was due to some people not paying up the banks for the loans taken and the burden comes on to the taxpayer. “As far as the action plan is concerned, several

actions have been taken. These include empowering the banks by statutory changes, all laws have been amended and the Reserve Bank has come out with various schemes from time to time. “There are some other steps which are now being contemplated,” he added. Jaitley said the government believes the public sector banks have a very important role to play in supporting a large number of social programmes and extending the reach of banking and supporting infrastructure in the country. He said once the market conditions with regard to the valuation of these banks improves, then the bank shares itself will be used for their further capitalisation. He also noted that banks as lenders and creditors have to act in larger public interest and ensure that the economy and growth itself is supported, he said, adding that whatever arrangement with loans are made, these have to be on a commercial basis. In his written reply, Jaitley said, “For resolution of stressed assets, RBI has introduced a number of tools such as Corporate Debt Restructuring (CDR), Strategic Debt Restr ucturing Scheme (SDR) and Scheme for Sustainable Debt Stressed Assets (S4A)”.

New Delhi, Apr 11 (PTI): Mission Indradhanush to infuse capital in public sector banks is not the last step as far as their recapitalisation is concerned, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said today, asserting that the government was fully supporting them. Replying to questions on the grave concern expressed by the opposition over the growing non-performing assets (NPAs) in these banks, he said the government was making all efforts to ensure that the health of the banking sector improves and the banks are repaid. He, however, said that the NPA problem related to some big accounts, which are not unduly large in numerical terms, and people have to realise that banks have to be paid back. “There are 20 to 30 large accounts where people have to realise that banks have to be repaid. If the current promoters are not in a position to repay back, then they have to develop alternate corporate strategies so that the companies pay back,” he told the members. “The government will fully support the public sector banks because it believes they have a very important role to play... “The Indradhanush plan which envisages Rs 70,000 crore being given from the central budget is

Truck attacker admits to ‘terror crime’ Calls for boycott of UA in China

Defence lawyer Johan Eriksson speaks to the media at the court after the detention hearing of the suspect in Friday’s attack in Stockholm, Sweden, April 11, 2017.

STOCKHOLM, APR 11 (AFP): Suspected Stockholm truck attacker Rakhmat Akilov, a 39-year-old Uzbek and jihadist sympathiser, admitted today to committing a “terrorist crime” by mowing down pedestrians on a busy street, killing four people and injuring 15 others. “Akilov confesses to a terrorist crime and accepts his custody detention,” his lawyer Johan Eriksson told a custody hearing in a Stockholm district court. Akilov, who was arrested in a Stockholm suburb just hours after Friday’s attack, appeared in the courthouse’s special heavilyguarded, high-security courtroom. Handcuffed and

wearing a thick green hoodie over his head, he kept his head bowed down. Judge Malou Lindblom ordered him to remove the hoodie and he complied, revealing dark hair with streaks of grey. A k i l ov, a Ru s s i a n speaker, had an interpreter at his side to help him follow the proceedings. He did not address the court directly. After Eriksson’s statement, the judge consented to the prosecution’s request to have the rest of the hearing held behind closed doors due to the classified nature of the information in the investigation. After about an hour, journalists were readmitted into the courtroom and the judge remanded

Akilov in custody. Court documents seen by AFP showed Akilov, who is facing life behind bars, had requested that his stateappointed lawyer Johan Eriksson be replaced by a Sunni Muslim, saying “only a lawyer of this faith could assert his interests in the best way”. The court refused the request. The four people killed in the attack were two Swedes -- one woman and an 11-year-old girl -- a British man, and a Belgian woman. Eight people were still in hospital, two of whom were in critical condition. Akilov, a construction worker who had been refused permanent residency in Sweden in June 2016, had gone underground last year after receiving a deportation order, police said. Friday’s attack resembled previous rampages using vehicles in Nice, Berlin and London, all of them claimed by the Islamic State (IS). IS has not claimed responsibility for the Stockholm attack, but Swedish media reports yesterday said Akilov had told investigators that he had received an “order” from IS to carry out the attack against “infidels”.

Secretary-General António Guterres designates children’s rights activist and Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai as a UN Messenger of Peace.

U NIT E D NATIONS, APR 11 (PTI): Men should not clip the “wings of women and let them fly”, Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai said as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres designated her as the youngest-ever ‘Messenger of Peace’. “The role of men, fathers and brothers is really important. There were so many girls just like me in Swat Valley who could have spoken out but their fathers did not allow them, their brothers did not allow them to do so,” the 19-yearold Pakistani education activist said. She said her case was different as her father did not stop her, Malala said during a ceremony here yesterday to designate her the UN Messenger of Peace, the highest honour bestowed by the SecretaryGeneral on a global citizen. “... All I had was a father

and a family who said ‘yes you can speak. It is your choice’. I think that is what we need. We need brothers and fathers and all men in the family to let women be who they want to be.” She said her father always told people not to ask him what he did for Malala, ‘but ask what I didn’t do – I didn’t clip her wings.’ “Men should not clip the wings of women and let them fly and let them go forward,” Yousafzai said, as her father Ziauddin Yousafzai sat in the audience and watched her. Yousafzai, who was shot in 2012 by the Taliban for attending classes, is the youngest-ever UN Messenger of Peace and the first one to be designated by Guterres since he assumed office in January this year. With the designation, Yousafzai joins other current Messengers of Peace including Oscar-winning

actor Leonardo di Caprio for climate change, actor Charlize Theron, whose focus is prevention of HIV and elimination of violence against women and actor Michael Douglas whose focus is disarmament. “It is for me a very emotional day to be here with you. You are the symbol of one of the most important causes in the world — probably the most important cause in the world — and that is education, education for all, and particularly because we know it is more difficult in many societies — education for girls,” Guterres said. While recovering from t h e Ta l i b a n a t t a c k , Yousafzai said she realised “extremists tried everything to stop me (and the fact that they didn’t) is clear evidence that no one can stop me. They tried to kill me and they didn’t succeed. Now this is a new life, this is a second life and it is for the purpose of education and I’ll continue working on (this issue).” Accepting the accolade, Yousafzai underscored the importance of education, especially education of girls, for advancing communities and societies. “(Bringing change) starts with us and it should start now,” she said, adding “If you want to see your future bright, you have to start working now (and) not wait for anyone else.”

The Chairman of Nihoi Village Council Shri. Kakuho Achumi is hereby issuing this open letter to the concerned authorities on behalf of the Nihoi Village in the greater interest of the people of the village and with the intention of safeguarding the property and life of the Nihoi Villagers and states as follows: That initially a Platoon of the 13 IR was posted at Nihoi Village in the year 2015 as preventive measure to pacify any dispute between the Jalukie low and Nihoi village. That however, since their deployment at Nihoi Village the IR platoon have miserably failed to maintain discipline and has instead caused several hardship to the people of Nihoi Village by destroying the natural resources such as teak and ghamari plantations which belongs to the villagers. Consequently the Zutovi Village Council has issued a press release dated 21/03/2015 and has expressed their grievances and displeasure at the unreasonable conduct of the IR platoon posted at Nihoi Village an appealed to prevent encroachment of Nihoi Village land by outsiders. However, unfortunately the situation has not improved since. That presently a platoon of the 9th IR is posted at Nihoi Village and unfortunately, the undersigned is obliged and duty bound to forward this statement for the consumption of the general public and as an appeal to the concerned authority to take necessary action in the interest of justice, fair play and good conscience. At this outset the undersigned states as under: That although the purpose of deployment of the IR platoon at Nihoi Village is to prevent any untoward incident that may occur due to dispute amongst Nihoi Village and its neighboring villages and to ensure that there are no encroachment of land and property of Nihoi Village the IR personnels are instead indulging themselves in destruction of the private properties i.e. tree plantations which belong to the villagers of Nihoi Village causing huge losses and damages to the people of Nihoi Village. That moreover, the 9 IR posted at Nihoi Village have failed miserably in preventing the encroachment of the land of Nihoi Village by outsiders who have a complete disregard of the IR personnels and have built their houses right before their nose and despite the efforts of the Nihoi Villagers to prevent the encroachment the IR have remained complacent and have not prevented the illegal occupation of the land belonging to Nihoi village and as such the villagers of Nihoi Village have completely lost their confidence on the IR personnels and are instead under constant insecurity and fear of further loss of property. That presently the 9th IR platoon posted at Nihoi Village have cut down huge quantities of teak which were planted at private plantations of Nihoi Villagers and have also deforested large area of forested private as well as village land for firewood and other purposes best known to them. That the undersigned have written a letter to the SDO Civil Dhansaripar division, Dimapur, Nagaland vide letter dated 22/02/2017 praying for his interference. However, the IR have not stopped their misconduct and remains indifferent towards rights of the citizens of Nihoi Village. That under the above mentioned circumstances the undersigned is fully convinced that the IRB platoon post at Nihoi Village is doing more harm as they are allowing open encroachment of the land of Nihoi Village by outsiders and have not taken any action whatsoever to prevent the same and in the event of the platoon remaining at the post it will undoubtedly cause irreparable damage to the people of Nihoi Village and therefore it is the pledge of the people of Nihoi Village to the concerned authority to save them from doom before the said platoon of IRB's posted at Nihoi Village who are eating away the precious resources of the village people and has miserably failed in maintaining status quo at the village property and as such the Nihoi Village earnestly prays for the removal of the IRB post from the village and in the meantime demands the controlling officer to immediately stop the cutting down of trees and to compensate the villagers whose property has been destroyed or damaged by the platoon.

reported today. ‘Just kill me, just kill me’: appalling new video shows elderly United passenger begging for mercy. In the incident, the passenger protested that he was on his way to treat patients in Louisville, Kentucky, and that the company’s decision to kick him off the plane along with three others was due to his race. On Wechat, the popular Chinese social media platform, articles about the incident circulated widely with headlines such as “because he chose United Airlines, he was beaten and dragged off the plane, with blood over his face.” Among the most popular Weibo posts was from Chinese-American comedian Joe Wong, who spoke out in support of the assaulted passenger. United’s booting of a passenger was even dumber than it looks: staff could have flown cheaper on other flights “Many Chinese people feel they are racially discriminated against but don’t speak out for fear of losing face, causing Western mainstream media and the public to not take discrimination against Asians seriously,” he said.

BEIJING, APR 11 (PTI): Angry Chinese netizens today called for the boycott of the United Airlines for “racial discrimination” after a 69-year-old Chinese-American passenger was forcibly removed by its staff from an overbooked flight in Chicago. Video of police officers dragging the Chinese-American doctor from an overbooked United Airlines flight sparked an uproar on social media in China. As the flight waited to de par t from Chicago’s O’Hare Airport to Louisville, Kentucky, officers grabbed the doctor from a window seat, pulling him across the armrest and dragging him down the aisle by his arms. The passenger was later shown with blood on his face. The video, posted on social media on Sunday, has been viewed by more than 120 million users in China. The video sparked outrage across Chinese social media as the airlines’ decision to evict the passenger from the domestic flight was condemned as “racial discrimination”, Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post

walk in the woods and green spaces is likely to trigger changes in the levels of excitement, engagement and frustration in the brains of the elderly people living in urban areas, a study has found. The findings have important implications for architects, planners and health professionals as the world deals with an ageing population, the researchers said. “Urban green space has a role to play in con-

tributing to a supportive city environment for older people through mediating the stress induced by built up settings,” said Chris Neale, research student at the University of York. The study was published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. For the study, the team recruited eight volunteers aged 65 and over and gave them a mobile electroencephalography (EEG) headset which recorded their

brain activity while walking through busy and green urban spaces. The study revealed that the participants experienced beneficial effects of green space and preferred it, as it was calming and quieter. “In a time of austerity, when greens spaces are possibly under threat, we have demonstrated that these areas are important to people’s health. Maintaining access to green space could be a relatively low-cost option for improving mental well being of the elderly,” Neale said.

The girls from 21 government-run residential schools in north coastal Andra participated in the event to commemorate 125th birth anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar. The girls performed in unison with three songs, whose theme was the life story of Ambedkar. The event was jointly being organized by Andhra Pradesh Residential Educational Institutions Society (APREIS) and Social Welfare Department. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, ministers and top officials attended the programme. The organisers said it broke the earlier record of the largest Kuchipudi dance. As many as 6,117 artists had performed the classical dance in Vijayawada in December last year to set

the record. The girls who performed in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday were trained by professional dancers for last two months. In his address, Naidu said Kuchipudi was the cultural heritage of Andhra Pradesh. “It’s the responsibility of all of us to pass on this great heritage to

for promotion of Kuchipudi. He said Kuchipudi Academy would also come up in the new state capital Amaravati.

egastar Amitabh Bachchan has recorded a two-minute prologue for a TV show, in which he has dwelled upon women’s safety. However, he says it’s a shame that one has to rely on various mediums and campaigns to raise awareness about the issue. “And I step out somewhat tentatively across the lawn to the precincts of the space that is often referred to as my office and crash right into the routine of a recording to be done for a serial that is being made by a channel,” Amitabh posted on his blog. “The recording is just the two-minute prologue on the essence of the programme -- its message though is in similarity to the effort first out of the block, ‘Pink’; its sentiment, its message and its most stark and powerful issue -- the safety of our women,” he added. The 74-year-old did not divulge details about the show, but he further wrote: “Is it not a shame though, that what should come to us humans as a natural reaction to protect the female gender in our society, one and many ones, have to propagate the issue through various mediums and campaigns! A shame.” Amitabh then raised concern about rape victims, who go through “humiliating questioning to prove the credential for the actuality

Bagan face tricky title test in Shillong

Lajong players during a practise session ahead of their match against Mohun Bagan.

KO L K AT A , A p r 1 1 (Agencies): Secondplaced Mohun Bagan have the chance to go to the top of the I-League table when they face the challenge of Shillong Lajong FC in their rescheduled I-League encounter in Shillong on Wednesday. Aizawl FC are currently at the top of the I-League table with 30 points from 15 games while the green and maroons have 29 points after 14 encounters. Shillong Lajong FC, on the other hand, occupy the fourth spot with 23 points from 14 matches. Mohun Bagan are high on confidence after a moraleboosting 2-1 victory over arch-rivals East Bengal at

the Kanchenjungha Stadium in Siliguri on Sunday and would be hoping to carry on with the momentum. Mohun Bagan’s away form has not been great this season as they have picked up just one victory in their six away games. With the title race in the final stretch, Sanjoy Sen’s men would be hoping to improve on that record. Mohun Bagan had defeated Shillong Lajong FC 2-0 in the first-leg encounter at the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium in January but the Shillong-based side has improved significantly after that. “It is time for us to forget the win over East Bengal and concentrate fully

on the next game. The match against Shillong Lajong FC will be a tough encounter and we need to be at our best to pick up full points,” said Mohun Bagan coach Sanjoy Sen. Meanwhile, Shillong Lajong FC have won three of their last five matches including the last game in which they defeated DSK Shivajians 3-2 in an away encounter. Wednesday’s game also pits two of the top scorers of the league. While Shillong Lajong FC’s Aser Pierrick Dipanda is at the top of the goal-scorers’ list with nine goals, Mohun Bagan’s Darryl Duffy is the joint second-highest scorer with seven goals to his kitty.

Arsenal’s top-four hopes suffer blow

Andros Townsend found space to slot Crystal Palace into the lead.

L o nd o n , Ap r 1 1 (Agencies): Arsenal’s hopes of finishing in the P r e m i e r L e a g u e ’s t o p four suffered a potentially fatal blow as they suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat at relegation-threatened Crystal Palace on Monday. Vi c t o r y h a d b e e n imperative for an Arsenal side that had won only two league games since January but the abject display with Andros Townsend, Yohan Cabaye and Luka Milivojevic all scoring for Palace only heaped more pressure on manager Arsene Wenger. Sixth-placed Arsenal, who have finished in the top four in 20 consecutive seasons under Wenger,

now have 54 points from 30 games - seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester City, who have played a game more. “It’s damaging of course,” a seemingly dispirited Wenger told Sky Sports when asked about how serious the blow was to their chances of Champions League football next season. “That’s the most difficult thing for us tonight.” Rejuvenated Palace, winners of four of their previous five league games under Sam Allardyce, started confidently and opened the scoring when former Tottenham winger Townsend swept the ball home at the end of a smart passing move after 17 minutes. Palace

striker Christian Benteke then had a goal ruled out for offside before Cabaye’s superb curled effort and Milivojevic’s penalty in five second-half minutes completed a miserable night for Wenger at a raucous Selhurst Park. Palace stay 16th but now have 34 points from 31 matches, six more than Swansea City, who occupy the final relegation place in 18th and have played a game more. “A l l w e c a n d o is apologise for that performance,” Arsenal’s Theo Walcott said after Arsenal fans had sung ‘You’re not fit to wear the shirt’ at their players. “It was a great three points and

bagged the gold medal. Lt Col M Kiran Meitei, officiating principal graced the occasion as the chief guest and gave away the medals and certificates. The final match which was played between Patkai House and Japfu showed a stiff fight. Till half time,

Japfu dominated the match and was on the winning side with a solitary goal. But in the second half, Patkai scored the equalizer and managed to keep the balance till the final whistle. Finally, the match was decided through a penalty shoot-out in which Japfu won by 3-1. Cadet Larto Bui of Japfu House was awarded the best player of the championship. Saramati House finished third in the championship. The championship which began on April 3 gave opportunity for the young cadets to prove their talent and skill and to book a place in the school team and to represent Sainik School Punglwa in the forth coming East Zone Championship 2017 to be held in Sainik S c h o o l P u r u l i a , We s t Bengal.

a well needed-three points,” Townsend said. “Sam Allardyce has been incredible. He looks to have worked his magic again.” Arsenal started shakily against in-form Palace and within the first seven minutes Cabaye had wasted a dangerous shooting position before Milivojevic blazed narrowly wide. Arsenal settled into a period of possession but Palace were a constant threat on the break and it was a long ball from a goalkick that yielded the breakthrough. After Benteke won a header, a neat passing move ended with Townsend stroking home a cross from the slipping Wilfried Zaha, high past Emiliano Martinez. In response Arsenal created a few chances via Alexis Sanchez but the hosts looked capable of scoring whenever they ran at Arsenal’s fragile defence. Benteke had a goal ruled out for offside after the break before Palace added a well-deserved, quickfire brace. First, Cabaye met Zaha’s cross with a superb, first-time effort before the impressive Milivojevic converted from the penalty spot after Townsend was fouled. Without some desperate last-ditch defending Palace, revitalised in their past six games, could have scored further goals.

Daredevils thump RPS by 97 runs Pune, April 11 (IANS): Delhi Daredevils rode on an all-round effort to thrash Rising Pune Supergiant by 97 runs in an IPL match at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium here on Tuesday. While Kerala youngster Sanju Samson’s maiden T20 hundred set things on fire in the first innings as Delhi posted a mammoth 204/5, captain Zaheer Khan led from the front with three wickets to bundle the hosts out for a paltry 108 in 16.1 overs. Zaheer (3/20) was complimented well by legspinner Amit Mishra, who returned with figures of 3/11 and Australian pacer Pat Cummins (2/24) as Pune succumbed to their second defeat in their three matches so far. Chasing a mammoth 205, Pune’s innings derailed in the third over when opener and stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane (10) fell to Zaheer. Zaheer again struck in his very next over with the wicket of Mayank Agarwal, whose poor run with the bat continued. Thereafter, it seemed like the Pune batsmen were in a hurry to get back to the dug out as debutant Rahul Tripathi (10), Faf du Plessis (8) and IPL-2017’s million dollar boy Ben Stokes (2) fell in no time. Pune’s weakness with the bat in the absence of

regular skipper Steve Smith was clearly out when the hosts lost half the side by the eighth over with just 55 runs on the board. For mer skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (11) and veteran all-rounder Rajat Bhatia (16) also failed to make any vital contributions. Pacer Deepak Chahar (14) raised Pune’s hopes for a short while when he clobbered Cummins for two consecutive sixes before

Zaheer got him caught behind on the first ball of his third over. Mishra struck once again in his third over to get rid of Australian leggie Adam Zampa (5) as Pune were reduced to 107/9 before Cummins finished off things with the wicket of Ashoke Dinda (7) without any fuss. Celtics clinch Atlantic Division title

B OS T O N , Ap r 1 1 (Agencies): The Boston Celtics clinched the Atlantic Division title and kept alive their hopes for the top seed in the Eastern Conference with a 114-105 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Monday night. The victory, which completed a four-game sweep of the season series with the Nets — who will provide Boston with one of the top picks in the 2017 draft — moved the Celtics (52-29) temporarily a half-game ahead of the Cleveland Cavaliers (51-29) atop the conference. The Cavs played in Miami on Monday and would sew up the top spot with wins in their last two games regardless of what the Celtics do Wednesday night at home against the Milwaukee Bucks. Despite the loss, Brook Lopez scored 25 points and became the Nets’ alltime scoring leader, passing Buck Williams. Isaiah Thomas scored 27 points, Al Horford had 19 and the pair combined

The Celtics built a 27-point lead in the third quarter, but a 37-point quarter and then another charge in the fourth got the Nets, who scored 40 in the first half, to within six in the fourth. Runs of 12-0 and 9-0 got them there. Jeremy Lin, a former Harvard star playing on Chinese Heritage Night

at TD Garden, scored 26 points and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds, and Rondae HollisJefferson scored a careerhigh 17 points and had 11 rebounds. The Nets lost for the second time in six games. The Celtics improved to 24-0 when leading after three quarters at home.

Edgardo Bauza

Buenos Aires, Apr 11 (IANS): Edgardo Bauza has been sacked as the coach of Argentina’s national team after a poor run of results, the President of the Argentinian Football Association (AFA) said. The announcement came less than two weeks after Argentina lost 0-2 to Bolivia in La Paz, a result that left them in danger of missing next year’s World Cup, reports Xinhua news agency. “I have informed Bauza that he is no longer coach of the national team,” AFA chief Claudio Tapia told reporters. Among those touted as possible candidates for the vacant position are Sevilla manager Jorge Sampaoli and Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone. Bauza, who replaced Gerardo Martino as coach in August, led Argentina to three wins, two draws and three defeats. Printed, Published and Edited by Geoffrey Yaden at G.M. Printers, Circular Rd.
