Wide consultations on Naga solution Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, APR 9 (NPN): The dynamics of the Naga nationalist politics is witnessing marked changes where the process of “wide consultation with all stakeholders” has meant holding interactions with a recently formed Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) or the ‘Working Group’ representing six groups- GPRN/NSCN, FGN, NNC (parent body), N P G N / N N C ( NA ) , NSCN (R) and NNC/ GDRN (NA). On April 8, state chief minister Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü along with the NPF Political Affairs Mission (PAM) had met with the NNPGs at the Police Complex, Chumukedima to solicit understanding for a bringing an early solution to the Naga political issue. According to sources, the NNPGs had also wanted to know from the government as to what were the contents in the framework ag reement since past and present chief ministers have been urging everybody to support it? The chief minister had
45 killed in Egypt church bombings CAIRO, APR 9 (PTI): At least 45 people were killed and nearly 120 others injured in powerful blasts triggered by ISIS in two churches packed with worshippers celebrating Palm Sunday in Egypt’s Tanta and Alexandria cities, the deadliest attacks on the minority Coptic Christians in recent years. The first blast took place in the Coptic church of Mar Girgis, also known as St George, in the Nile delta city of Tanta, about 120 kilometres from Cairo, killing 27 people and injuring 78, the Health Ministry said in a statement. Security sources said the primary investigations suggest that a person put an explosive device inside the church during the Christian prayers celebrating the Palm Sunday. However, others said the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the twin attacks on churches on Palm Sunday, one of the holiest days of the Christian calendar. “Islamic State squads carried out the attacks on two churches in Tanta and Alexandria,” said the group’s propaganda news agency ‘Amaq’ on its social media accounts.
After Nagaland CM, interlocutor for Naga talks Ravi also to meet NNPGs reportedly stated that the contents were only known to the negotiating parties involved and it would not be advisable to speculate on it. However, the chief minister impressed upon all on the need for all sections of Nagas to remain united for solution. It was learnt that the Interlocutor of the government of India to the Naga peace talks, R.N. Ravi is likely to meet with representatives of the Naga National Political Groups in Kolkata later this month. During the recently concluded Manipur elections the issue of framework agreement also figured prominently against the backdrop of apprehension among the majority Meiteis on the Naga integration issue. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on February 26 at a rally in Imphal, assured public of Manipur that the agreement did not
contain any clause that may pose a threat to the territorial integrity of Manipur. Earlier on February 19, union minister of home assured that the Framework Agreement signed between the Government of India and NSCN-IM on August 3, 2015 would not affect the integrity and territorial boundary of Manipur in any manner. On March 25, RN Ravi laid to rest the speculations about integration of Naga-inhabited areas and asserted that no such agreement has been reached with the NSCN (I-M). The Central Government is very firm on its stand on the issue and the leaders of the NSCN (I-M) are aware of the government’s stand, he said. In an interview to The Assam Tribune Ravi said “I have signed the Framework Agreement on behalf of the Government of India and I know every detail of it. There is nothing about
touching the territorial integrity of any state.” Further, in the interview he said that “The Government of India has already made its stand clear on the issue and there is no question of changing its stand.” He pointed out that during his last visit to Manipur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also publicly announced the Centre’s stand on the issue. The interlocutor said the claim that there would be integration of the Nagainhabited areas was a ‘blatant lie’. It is a mischievous act by some vested interest circles to create law and order problem in the Northeast, he said. The Centre’s interlocutor further said the NSCN (I-M) has every right to demand integration of Naga-inhabited areas democratically. “The government cannot stop the leaders of the outfit from raising such a demand democratically. But the Centre’s stand on the issue is very clear and the government would not deviate from its stand,” he added.
RSS chief calls for LH, RH threaten indefinite NH-2 bandh nationwide ban on cow slaughter DEMAND ROAD WIDENING WORK BY APRIL 18 NEW DELHI, APR 9 (IANS): Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday called for a nationwide ban on slaughter of cows. “We have been striving to protect the cow. Sampoorna Bharatvarsh me gauvansh hatya band hoye hamari ichha hai (We wish the killing of cows and its progeny should be banned in the entire country),” Bhagwat said at an event to mark the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir Jain. He said it was for the government to make laws to this effect. “Wherever in the state governments we have dedicated swayamsevaks, those state governments have brought in laws. But our desire is the law should be for the entire country,” he added. Bhagwat said any violence in the name of cow slaughter defames the cause, but added that those making efforts to save the cows should continue to do so. It may be pointed out that several right wing activist have also formed cow vigilante groups across the country .
CIC asks MHA to produce Naga accord file NEW DELHI, APR 9 (PTI): The files related to the framework agreement with the NSCN (I-M) should be produced before it in case the Home Ministry wants to decline disclosure under the RTI Act, the CIC has held. The case relates to a RTI application filed by Venkatesh Nayak of Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative but the Home Ministry denied to disclose it saying it would attract section (1)(a) of the RTI Act. Nayak said the Home Ministry did not adequately explain the harm that would be caused to any of the protected interest under section 8(1)(a) of the RTI Act. The section allows withholding the information, the disclosure of which will be prejudicially affect the sovereignty and integrity of India, the security, strategic, scientific or economic interests of the State, relation with a foreign State or lead to incite-
ment of an offence. “That it is crucial for the citizenry, of which this complainant (Nayak) is a part, to have access to official information about the framework agreement on the basis of which negotiations are being conducted with nonState actors,” he had said in his submissions before the Commission. During the hearing before the Commission, the Home Ministry had claimed that it does not have any files related to the agreement as they were held by the Joint Intelligence Committee. In an interim order, the Commission had directed the Ministry to ascertain whether JIC comes under it or is an independent public authority under the RTI Act. The Home Ministry has now said that JIC comes under it and it will take a call on future course of action. The Commission said the CPIO is required to ap-
ply her mind independently to advice received from Office of the interlocutor and government representative for Naga peace talks to the contents of the RTI application for making a decision on whether to provide information. “It is to be further noted that in case, the respondent decides that the information is not to be disclosed, then the concerned file(s) should be made available before the Commission for perusal on the next date of hearing,” Chief Information Commissioner R K Mathur said in a recent order. Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju had said in Parliament that details of the final settlement are being worked out within the parameters of the Framework Agreement. “Hence it would be premature to make public the Framework Agreement,” Rijiju has said on March 15.
Centre failed to take up issues against ethnic minorities, says NEFIS DIMAPUR, APR 9 (NPN): North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) has condemned the failure of the BJP government at the Centre to raise the issue of violence committed against the ethnic minorities, especially against Chakma and Santhal communities in Bangladesh during the recent visit of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India. In a statement, NEFIS convener Chinglen Khumukcham said that there has been a huge surge in atrocities against minorities and tribal communities in recent times. However, the Government of India instead of taking up this issue was actively pursuing the agenda of “Indian businessmen inked business deals with Bangladesh PM”. NEFIS stand was that the issue of grave atrocities should have been pro-actively taken up by the BJP Government, but was neglected in order to create a convenient atmosphere for inking of deals “which would be of no profit to the common people of both countries”. Further, NEFIS claimed that the Government instead of building a bond of solidarity with the exploited and victimized people in the neighbour countries has become a tool “for furthering the exploitative interests of Indian business class”.

DIMAPUR, APR 9 (NPN): Strong winds coupled with heavy rainfall swept across Nagaland on Sunday afternoon leaving behind trails of destruction in several places and caused power outages in most areas. The strong storm that lasted about 20 minutes, wrecked havoc sending trees and electric poles flying and ripped off roofs in
Dimapur and adjoining areas. However, no human casualties were reported. Several houses including a Government Primary School were reportedly destroyed by the Sunday storm in Yeveto village under Niuland. Power lines were also snapped resulting in power outages in the area. According to sources in the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), the roof
of Longchem EAC office and PHC were blown away and caused extensive damage at Yajang Model and Yajang C village in Mokokchung district. Preliminary report informed of similar damages caused in Longsemdang and Japukong, Tsurang and others under ADC Mangkolemba. Some villages under Wokha district were also affected by the storm. DIMAPUR, APR 9 (NPN): Lotha Hoho (LH) and Rengma Hoho (RH) on Sunday served an “open ultimatum” on the National Highways Authorities of Nagaland (NHAN) to immediately start the road widening work along NH-2 for the two sectors by April 18, failing which the hohos threatened to launch a total indefinite bandh within its sectors (NH-2) from April 19, 2017. In a joint statement, LH chairman Mhao Humtsoe and RH president Kenyuseng Tep have made known to the NHAN that there would be “no more negotiations” since several appeals were made that fell into deaf ears. They said even after two years the assurances made by the minister in-charge, chief engineer (NH) including the commissioner & secretary were yet to be fulfilled. LH and RH said the CE had also clarified on June 6, 2015 through the local media with assuring comments saying: “it has been observed regretfully that the Tseminyu and Wokha stretch of road is in deplorable condition because of litigation in the
the State were affected by the strong storm, damages caused by hailstorm were reported from Tuli area. Few window glasses of Molungyimsen Baptist Church were broken by the hailstorm and there were also reports of damaged houses in Lirmen, Longsa and nearby villages. Travellers from across the State also reported scenes of uprooted trees and bamboos along the highways.
Supreme Court; but the court case is settled and the work on this stretch is proposed in the Annual Plan of 2014-15 and the updated Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been submitted to the MORTH for sanction”. The minister had also given his assurance, the hohos said quoting the September 30, 2015 news headline published in section of the local dailies “Nuklotoshi assures work on Tseminyu & Wokha road sectors within two weeks”. At the meeting between LH and RH members along with commissioner & secretary and CE (NH) on October 3, 2015, the hohos said they were assured that the DPR could be ready for sanction within two months (by January 2016). Based on this assurance, the hohos said they patiently and hopefully waited, but to no avail. The hohos said a “reminder memorandum” was also submitted to the department on April 30, 2016. However, two years have passed and the assurances were yet to be fulfilled, the hohos said. They pointed out
that government of India (MORTH) had approved the DPR and sanctioned Rs. 340.2687 crore on October 31, 2016. The ministry had also specifically pointed out that the work had to start by December 2016, and to spend 20% of the sanctioned amount within 2016-17, so that the sanctioned amount did not lapse, the hohos said. The hohos said they were aware that the court case was already settled on August 8, 2014. In this regard, LH and RH questioned whether the delay was because the work was to be allotted to a favourable bidder, with vested motive. “If NHAN refute this allegation, the hohos will bring in the testimony of the living bidder witness, which will be too embarrassing,” the hohos said. LH and RH questioned NHAN as to what were they doing for the last four years? They also wondered whether it reflected the same old tradition of unfair allotment or inefficiency or indifference or deliberate discrimination or abhorrence. (Cont’d on p-8)

‘No govt job for those with more than two children’ G u wa h at i , A p r 9 (PTI): The Assam government on Sunday announced a draft population policy which suggested denial of government jobs to people with more than two children and making education up to university level free for all girls in the state. “This is a draft population policy. We have suggested that people having more than two children will not be eligible for any government jobs,” Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said at a press conference in Guwahati. Any person getting a job after meeting this condition will have to maintain it till end of his service, he added. “For employment generation schemes like giving tractors, offering homes and others government benefits, this two-children norm will be applicable. Besides, all elections such as panchayats, municipal bodies and autonomous councils held under the state election commission will also have this norm for candidates,” Sarma said. Sarma, who is also the Education minister, said the
policy also aims to give free education to all girls up to university level. “We want to make all facilities free, including fees, transportation, books and mess dues in hostels. This step is also likely to arrest the school dropout rate,” he added. Sarma further said the proposed population policy will seek to debate on increasing the legal age of marriage from 18 years for girls and 21 years for boys. If anybody has child marriage then he will be ineligible for government job, the minister said. The policy will also seek stringent laws to prevent violence and sexual abuse of women, he added. “Besides, a proposal for providing incentives is also included for poor persons, who take care of their elderly parents. The policy will also care for the adolescents. We will work for public awareness and reach out through religious leaders, NGOs, parliamentarians and media in this regard,” Sarma said. The policy proposes to set up a State Population
Council and a State Population Research Centre, he added. The minister also said he will consider including a provision for giving 50 per cent reservation to women in government jobs and elections. “Till July, we will seek public suggestions. Then it will go to the Assembly for debate and adopting a resolution. We have to go step by step and we are in no hurry. This is the long-term thing that BJP had promised in the Vision Document,” Sarma said. Service rules of 48 departments will have to be amended for adopting the proposed policy, he said, adding it will take at least three years and he will be happy if the policy takes the final shape by next Assembly polls in 2021. “We want to move from primarily a medicalled policy to a socially responsible policy. We want to have a behavioural change and there will be policy incentives. Assam’s current population is 3.12 crore as per 2011 Census and it increased by one crore from 2001,” Sarma said.
northeast Brahmaputra in Assam to be dredged G u wa h at i , A p r 9 (PTI): A total of 871 km of the mighty Brahmaputra in Assam will be dredged with the Centre bearing its expenditure, said a senior official of the Inland Water Transport department. Survey of 300 km of the Brahmaputra has been completed so far by the state PWD department for dredging of the river, said Inland Water Transport director, B B Dev Choudhury while participating in an All India Radio News talk show last night. Choudhury said help of experts will be taken for the dredging. T h e I n l a n d Wa t e r Transport director said the dredging will bring opportunities to Assam as the state will get access to Chittagong port in Bangladesh benefiting 54 lakh people in the state involved in the water transport system, besides tourism getting a boost through improved water transport system. He said water taxi service will be introduced in Guwahati this year and the World Bank has sanctioned Rs 1000 crore for the development of Inland water transport in Assam. An expressway will be constructed along the river after dredging, Choudhury added.
67.97% voting recorded in Dhemaji assembly by-poll Guwahati, Apr 9 (IANS): Voting in the Assam assembly by-election in Dhemaji constituency passed off peacefully on Sunday, with 66.97 per cent of the total 2,19,751 voters casting their votes, an election official said. “The overall voter turnout for the by-election in the Dhemaji assembly constituency was 66.97 per cent,” Dhemaji Returning Officer Roshni Aparanji Korati told IANS over the phone. The by-election was necessitated as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker Pradan Baruah contested and won the byelection to the Lok Sabha from the Lakhimpur constituency. Sarbananda Sonowal vacated the seat after winning from the Majuli assembly constituency on becoming the Chief Minister. Sonowal was sworn in as first BJP Chief Minister of Assam on May 24. Korati said polling started at 7 a.m. and ended at 4.00 p.m. No untoward incident was reported, barring a technical glitch on one Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT), which was immediately replaced. She said the VVPAT machines were

Singh said that public would be allowed to meet the chief minister, ministers, commissioners, secretaries, deputy commissioners and district SPs to lodge their complaints and air their grievances on the 15th of every month. “I would issue formal official order in this regard soon,” Singh said while reiterating that his government was fully committed to work tirelessly in the interest of the people of the state. Regarding the problems of vending space, pollution and traffic congestion in Imphal city, the chief minister said that the state now has a competent and dynamic MAHUD minister and all the problems would be sorted out soon by chalking out a long-term plan. Every hill district headquarters would now have a women’s market each, he said. used in polls for the first time in the state. Adequate security forces were deployed to ensure free and fair poll, Korati said, adding 20 polling stations were marked as “very sensitive” and 141 others as “sensitive”. Men and women in large numbers queued up at the 273 polling stations well before voting began at 7.00 a.m. despite a spell of heavy rain, Korati said. Five candidates are in the fray but the main contest is likely to take place between ruling BJP candidate Ranoj Pegu and Congress nominee Babul Sonowal. The other three candidates are Communist Party of India-Marxist’s Jadu Hazarika, Socialist Unity Centre of IndiaCommunist’s Hem Kanta Miri and Independent Rajkumar Doley. In the 126-member Assam assembly, the BJP has 60 members, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) 14 and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) 12. The opposition Congress has 26 members, All India United Democratic Front 13 and one Independent. The counting of votes will be held on April 13.

The children were heard shouting Hosanna and singing hymns in the processions, taken out in the villages and urban localities. The day is called Palm Sunday because the people of Jerusalem threw palm leaves on the floor as a greeting when Jesus Christ arrived in Jerusalem.
Cong provided a stable govt to Manipur: Gaikhangam Correspondent
IMPHAL, Apr 9: Manipur Congress leader and former Manipur deputy chief minister Gaikhangam Sunday asserted that the 15-year of Ibobi-led Congress rule will always occupy an important place in the history of Manipur. Addressing at the 47th foundation day celebration of National Student’s Union of India (NSUI),
Manipur state unit in Imphal’s Congress Bhawan, Gaikhangam said a nonCongress government in the state after 15 years was a great challenge to the party (Congress). Cong ress came to power in 2002 and for 15 years it had provided a stable government and did its best for the development of the state, he said. Describing the 15 years of stable government
M’laya village bans fishing in river to preserve fauna S h i llo n g, A p r 9 (PTI): A tiny village in West Khasi Hills of Meghalaya has banned fishing on a stretch of the Rilang river to preserve its fauna. The fish sanctuary near Rohbah village, about 130 km from here, has helped rejuvenate the fauna which has been depleting over the years. The initiative also got support from residents of 7-8 nearby villages through which the Rilang rolls down. The village, with a population of about 250, was adopted under the North Eastern Region Community Resource M a n a ge m e n t P r o j e c t (NERCORMP), a livelihood and rural develop-

and we utilise their knowledge of conservation,” said a project official. The NERCORMP, a joint developmental initiative of the North Eastern Council and the International Fund for Agricultural Development, has been implemented in two districts each of three northeastern states – Assam, Manipur and Meghalaya -- in two phases. The central government extended the project to two more districts in Manipur and three districts in Arunachal Pradesh in the third phase. A proposal has been mooted for the fourth phase of this project to reach out to more and
more villages and enable the rural communities to come together and work towards sustainable development in the northeastern region. “With limited resources and time frame, the two phases of NERCORMP was implemented in two districts each in Meghalaya, Assam and Manipur, but not covering all blocks of these districts... There are more villages in abject poverty with only agriculture and shifting cultivation as their main source of livelihood. There is a need for an intervention to uplift the livelihood of the communities residing in these remote villages,” according to a project document.
given to the people as a rare historic event, the former deputy chief minister insisted that it will be etched in the memories of the people for a long time. Recalling how the BJP installed the coalition government in the state, the former MPCC president and sitting MLA mocked BJP’s promised for good governance to the people. “How can a minority government who will
be always busy appeasing its partners be able to give good governance to the people. We wish BJP will fulfill its poll promises,” he said. Gaikhangam expressed apprehension that Manipur will be in a mess under the BJP-led coalition government. He also advised the BJP not engage in political propaganda but to fulfill the promises it had made during the elections.

The incident took place at remote Chawmanu village, 120 km north of the Agartala state capital, in northern Tripura late on Saturday. According to the police, some youths were playing football in a school ground when the ball skidded off the field into what the players believed was an outcrop of weeds. Race for president and vice president
Spl. Correspondent/Agencies
New Delhi, APR 9 (NPN): President of India Pranab Mukherjee is due to retire in July. The buzz is already in the air about his possible successor. For the first time in the nation’s political history, it’s the BJP that is now set to have a candidate of its choice elected as head of state. Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has dismissed suggestions put forward by NDA ally Shiv Sena that he be the next President of India, but that has focussed attention on just who could be the next First Citizen of the country. Sources in the BJP say that the party’s national executive meet in Bhubaneswar will see some aspects of this debated in pull-aside meetings. “The fact is that this issue has not been discussed at very senior levels at the party. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pretty much kept his own counsel on the matter. We are anticipating that he will share some of his ideas on this when we are in Bhubhaneswar in the middle of April,” said a general secretary of the party. The BJP’s national executive is to be held in Odisha’s capital on April 15-16. Names of several contenders have found favour with various quarters of the Sangh Parivar. These include former Human Re-
source Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi, former deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani and even External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Manipur Governor Najma Heptulla. However, LK Advani put rest to all speculations about him being in the race for the post of the next President of India. Speaking to CNN News18 outside the parliament, Advani said that he was not in the race for President. According to a report by Zee News, PM Modi had not forgotten his ‘guru’ and had suggested his name for the nation’s most prestigious position. According to the report, the proposal had been made in front of various BJP leaders and PM Modi had hinted that such an action would be his ‘guru dakshina’ to Advani. The Presidential election is to be organised in July 2017 and PM Modi had made it clear that he was not looking towards the 2019 general election but beyond them and to make his 2022 dream possible, the Prime Minister needs the best candidate for the post of the President of the country. For the post of vice president, the names like Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu and his Maharashtra counterpart Ch. Vidyasagar Rao were doing the rounds. Interestingly the name of the only UPA- era Governor having survived the NDA regime, Dr. S.C. Jamir was also
in the reckoning, and his election may send a strong message to the North Eastern States. Meanwhile, the name of former GOC 3 Corps who retired as the deputy chief of the Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah was also doing the rounds for the post of VP. Lt. Gen (Retd) Shah, the elder brother actor Nazeer Uddin Shah, is currently the Vice Chancellor of the prestigious Aligarh Muslim University, he was also a Judge in the Armed Forces Tribunal, Principal Bench, New Delhi before taking over A.M.U. as the VC. This is not the first time the name of a Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University has come up for being the Vice President of India. Previously there has been a precedence of three Vice Presidents of India who were associated with The Aligarh Muslim University. Dr. Zakir Husain, and Hamid Ansari, currently completing his second term as the Vice President of India. Incidentally Lt. Gen. Shah has served with him on a Diplomatic assignment as a Defence Attache when Hamid Ansari was the Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. The election to the post of president will take place in July and the vicepresidential polls in August. “There is a long way to go yet, and many other names will, I am sure, be added to this list,” said the source.

Highways across country turn Violence mars Kashmir poll, 6 civilians killed local after SC bans liquor sale NEW DELHI, APR 9 (AGENCIES): Hundreds of kilometres of national and state highways in states like Maharashtra, Himachal, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and others have turned into local, municipal or district roads, just a few days after a Supreme Court order banning liquor sale along highways. Most states have not specified any reason for changing the categories and some have even denied that the step has been taken in view of the Supreme Court verdict. Last week, the Maharashtra government okayed proposals from three municipal corporations to classify highways passing through their areas to city roads, while Himachal Pradesh re-notified 16 state highways as major district roads (MDR). Maharashtra state PWD Minister Chandrakant Patil said that the government had received proposals from Jalgaon, Latur and Yavatmal municipal corporations seeking denotification of the highways which were okayed. The West Bengal government declared around 275 km of state highways passing through various municipalities as ‘arterial roads’. The notification posted on the state PWD website on March 16, came in between the Supreme Court order on highway liquor ban on December 15, 2016, and its reaffirmation by the apex court on March 31. The state government
did not give any specific reason for the denotification which covers stretches along all the 16 state highways. Uttarakhand took a similar decision with its cabinet allowing denotification of state highways located in the areas of local civic bodies and re-categorised them as other district roads saying highway specifications were coming in the way of their maintenance and expansion. The argument did not cut ice with the opposition Congress which claimed it was just a “pretext” for helping liquor trade which is a major source of revenue. Some road stretches were denotified in Rajasthan while the Punjab government also denotified the bypassed stretches of seven state highways and turned them into a part of the city roads. Officials of both Punjab and Rajasthan governments said that the denotified roads were only bypassed stretches. Meanwhile, in Goa, the Manohar Parrikar government faced heat from some opposition leaders who demanded that he come to the rescue of the tourism industry in the state. The AAP demanded that the state government work towards getting state highways de-notified wherever legally feasible. “India is a vast country...Goa is a tourist state, we need some relaxations. But I am not going to denotify highways,” Parrikar had said at an event.
Indian security forces clash with Kashmiri protestors near a polling station in Srinagar. S r i na g ar , A pr 9 (IANS): At least six civilians were killed and scores injured in firing by security forces as mobs tried to attack some polling stations in Srinagar parliamentary constituency that on Sunday recorded a poor seven per cent voting in a by-poll -- the lowest in the state in three decades, officials said. The by-poll to the Lok Sabha constituency -- spread across three districts of Srinagar, Budgam and Ganderbal -- was marred by widespread violence with police claiming that nearly 200 incidents of violent protests took place in central Kashmir. As the day began with small queues of voters outside polling booths, slogan shouting mobs attacked polling stations in Budgam, damaged EVMs and prevented voters from exercising their franchise. Security forces tried to disperse the crowds with warning shots initially and opened fire at them when
they didn’t relent, a police officer said. Six persons were killed at three places of Budgam district. “The security forces opened fire to protect the polling staff,” the officer said, alleging that mobs tried to storm many polling stations and destroy EVMs. The seven per cent voter turnout is the lowest in 27 years in the state. The constituency had in the 2014 general elections recorded 26 per cent turn out. The by-poll was the first after the 2016 unrest, triggered by the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani in July last. Over 100 people were killed in five months of the unrest -- the worst in six years of the troubled valley. “It was an unfortunate day. Over 100 security personnel were injured. The turnout was 7.09 per cent,” Chief Electoral Officer Shantmanu told media persons. Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said it
was the worst poll-related violence he had seen in his 20 years of political career. “Have contested six elections over 20 years and have never seen this level of violence in elections in Kashmir,” Abdullah tweeted. Abdullah hit out at the state government over the violence and accused Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti of failing to provide a conducive atmosphere for voting. “Mehbooba Mufti is responsible for this situation. There is mismanagement,” he said. Internet services in the valley were suspended late on Saturday and security was stepped up after separatists asked people to boycott polls. The stakes were high for opposition National Conference president Farooq Abdullah and ruling Peoples Democratic Party’s Nazir Ahmed Khan who were the main contestants in the constituency. In all, nine candidates were in the fray.
No illegality committed during Need to rise above sectarian interests: Rajnath Goa govt formation: Gadkari
Panaji, Apr 9 (IANS): Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Sunday said the BJP did not do anything illegal to form a government in Goa, but also revealed some of the behind-the-scenes aggressive manoeuvering, which enabled the party, which was short of majority, to clinch power. At a rally here to felicitate Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who gave up his role as Defence Minister to return to state politics and BJP President Amit Shah for coming to power in four of the five states where assembly elections were held, he also said that the real architect of the coalition government formation process was Amit Shah. Gadkari explained how Shah worked the phone to good effect with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and key members of the BJP’s highest decision-making body, the party’s parliamentary board, which triggered a series of developments which led to the BJP eventually cobbling together a coalition government in the coastal state. One of the obstacles, he said, was
the reluctance of two Independent MLAs, whose cooperation was required to reach the majority mark of 21. To counter this, he revealed that a message was sent across to their camp that ministerial berths were being allotted to others. “They had delayed. The Independent MLAs did not come. I said make others ministers,” he said, adding that once the Independent MLAs got the message, they themselves called and expressed willingness to join the BJP camp. While the Congress won 17 seats in the state assembly polls, the BJP had won 13 out of 40 seats. But swift decision-making led to the BJP eventually forming a government in Goa, with the support of three MLAs each from two regional parties -- Goa Forward and the Maharashtrwadi Gomantak Party -- and two Independent MLAs. “We did not do anything wrong. In the history of India, in the Lok Sabha and the legislative assembly elections, those who have the majority are invited to form government”, Gadkari said.
New Delhi, Apr 9 (IANS): Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said all stakeholders should rise above sectarian interests to focus on the larger picture of national development. Rajnath Singh made the observation while chairing the 11th Standing Committee meeting of the InterState Council here. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath attended the meeting. Besides, ministers from Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan represented their states at the meeting. The Home Minister
said all the stakeholders share a common desire to take the nation forward and prosperity can come only when there is peace and stability, a release said. He said India is a nation characterised by unity in diversity, and hence it is important that trust and cordiality form the bedrock for centre-state cooperation. The Standing Committee examined various recommendations of the Punchhi Commission contained in Volume 2 and 3, the release said. The Punchhi Commission was notified in 2005, and it submitted its report in 2010. It made recommendations which are contained in seven volumes The Volume 2 of the report is related to provisions of the constitution
Rajnath Singh that are concerned with important aspects of Constitutional governance such as role of Governors, deployment of central forces, federal balance of power, ensuring better coordination between central government and states and other important issues of centre-state relations. The recommendations in Volume 3 of the Punchhi Commission report are

RAMPUR, APR 9 (AGENCIES): Senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan today returned the cow which was gifted to him by Shankaracharya of Govardhan Peeth Swami Adhokshjanand Maharaj, saying any vigilante could kill the animal to “defame” him. The former Uttar Pradesh minister in a letter to the Hindu seer said: “Muslims were living in an atmosphere of insecurity ... Any cow vigilante might harm or even kill the beautiful and beneficial animal to defame me and the Muslim community.” The Hindu seer had in October 2015 gifted a black cow to Khan after the latter had expressed his desire to have one in his dairy. Khan alleged a “vicious propaganda has been launched against Muslims in the country and their condition was even worse than that of slaves”. He accused the state government of practising double standards, saying “the VVIPs are allowed to consume meat but common people are being troubled unnecessarily and even eliminated”.

Mixed up priorities
A
fter fifty three years of statehood, Nagaland seems to have reached a dead end in as far as meeting the growing needs of a demanding society. The changed priorities have in a way, become a factor for the mess around. In any state, priority would be given to good governance since it is the main delivery system for the implementing the programmes meant to provide the impetus for progress. In the case of Nagaland, governance is mentioned only for the sake of sounding good and not for practicing it. This is because lack of good governance frees politicians and bureaucrats including the selfish minded public from being shackled by rules and regulations. This allows them to do khushi-khushi so good governance does not exist in the dictionary of our politicians and their political parties. The top of the agenda of the government has become the Naga political problem and effecting change from the principle of ‘equi-distance’ to the present ‘equi-closeness’ with all Naga political groups; earlier known as ‘undergrounds’. The Naga political problem was always on the agenda of state political parties though in the past, it did not dominate other pressing matters. Giving prime importance to the issue has yet to effect an early solution even though what kind of solution, is also another matter .Today there are more than nine factions each claiming legitimacy over the Naga political movement. As for political solution, people see little politics in the way in which the factions engage in extortion and intimidation of vulnerable and helpless public. With good governance slipping, the state police and law enforcement apparatus have failed to do the job since lack of good governance can be self-inflicting. On the social and developmental front, lack of good governance has created a huge mess of illegality in every sphere of the government, be it in the form of illegal and backdoor appointments. The state government has also lost its ability to exercise judicious use of funds to ensure need-based projects and balanced development. The pace of development has been retarded by a combination of factors during the past decades, which people know all too well. Except for the period from the mid-60s to the early 80s, when there was a climate of progress despite the continuance of the Naga political problem; the pace of development after the mid-80s gradually slowed down, on account of several factors. Any significant achievements in either of the three would have had a cascading effect on the others. Though other problems are as important, what needs to be seriously looked into is about the actual economic condition of the people. If the three basic concerns were mainstreamed towards a broad-based objective, the net effect of the three could have resulted in the buildup of a sustainable and stable economic foundation especially since thousands of crores of rupees have been spent for development in Nagaland during the nearly five decades. The state annual budget for 2016-17 was Rs.13,658.74 crore while for the annual year 2017-18 the assembly approved the annual budget for Rs. 16,657.26 crore. In today’s environment, economic development brings social well being but again that is driven by the engine of good governance.
DailyDevotion Have You Seen Jesus? After that, He appeared in another form to two of them… —Mark 16:12 Being saved and seeing Jesus are not the same thing. Many people who have never seen Jesus have received and share in God’s grace. But once you have seen Him, you can never be the same. Other things will not have the appeal they did before. You should always recognize the difference between what you see Jesus to be and what He has done for you. If you see only what He has done for you, your God is not big enough. But if you have had a vision, seeing Jesus as He really is, experiences can come and go, yet you will endure “as seeing Him who is invisible” (Hebrews 11:27). The man who was blind from birth did not know who Jesus was until Christ appeared and revealed Himself to him (see John 9). Jesus appears to those for whom He has done something, but we cannot order or predict when He will come. He may appear suddenly, at any turn. Then you can exclaim, “Now I see Him!” (see John 9:25). Jesus must appear to you and to your friend individually; no one can see Jesus with your eyes. And division takes place when one has seen Him and the other has not. You cannot bring your friend to the point of seeing; God must do it. Have you seen Jesus? If so, you will want others to see Him too. “And they went and told it to the rest, but they did not believe them either” (Mark 16:13). When you see Him, you must tell, even if they don’t believe. O could I tell, you surely would believe it! O could I only say what I have seen! How should I tell or how can you receive it, How, till He bringeth you where I have been?

Yogi’s waiver brings farm sector at centre of economy
I
ndian farmers are in distress. UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s Rs 36,359 crore farm loan waiver is the beginning of a new thought process. It can neither be dismissed as a mere scoring of political point nor bad economics as many bankers and critics are saying. It is the beginning of a new debate to put the farm sector at the centre of the new Indian economy. The loan waiver is likely to cause a rethink on the World Bank-IMF slur on farm subsidy. The so-called 1991 “economic reform” and the 1995 WTO rules of the Agreement on Agriculture targeted ending farm subsidies. It caused enormous misery for the farm sector and abated innumerable suicides. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) says 256,913 farmers committee suicide between 1995 and 2011. Yogi’s and BJP’s UP election “Sankalp Patra” (manifesto) would possibly reorient the economy and the bad word subsidy has to be integrated into the economic theory for the growth of the farm sector, rural sector, elimination of poverty
and what is often touted as “inclusive growth”. The distress of the rural and farm sector is not restricted to UP. It is obvious from Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis statement that he is studying the UP model to waive off Rs 30,000 crore loans of Maharashtra farmers. Even the new Congress government in Punjab is trying to emulate the UP model. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi made a remarkable statement. He twitted, “A partial relief for UP farmers but a step in the right direction. Congress has always supported loan waivers for farmers in distress”. Does that show a political consensus? Is it repentance for 1991 Manmohanomics? The recent agitation by Tamilnadu far mers only stress that distress is widespread. In an order on April 4, the day the Yogi announced his waiver, the Madras High Court has directed the TN government to expand its farm loan waiver scheme to include farmers who own more than five acres. Andhra, Telangana and other states may follow it. At the human level the
non-sustainability of the current agricultural system was symbolized in the suicide by Lee Kyung Hae, a Korean farmer, who took his life at the barricades of the peoples protest against Shivaji the fifth ministerial meeting at WTO headquarters in Geneva on September 10, 2003. As he stabbed himself, he carried a banner stating “WTO kills farmers.” Lee’s suicide was symbolic of the suicides of thousands of farmers. The UP decision would give relief to 94 lakh farmers owing upto Rs 1 lakh each to banks. It would also benefit seven lakh farmers who had defaulted in repaying. This amounts to Rs 5630 crore. Many of these farmers were being harassed by the banks. There are about 2.15 crore small farmers with holdings of less than 2 hectares in the state, according to UP minister Siddharth Nath Singh. As much as 67 percent of India’s farmland is held by the marginal farmers with holdings below one hectare, against less than 1 percent in large holdings of 10 hectares and above, the latest Agriculture Census shows. The average size of the holding has been estimated as 1.15
hectare. There is a steady declining in trend in size of these holdings denotes various Agriculture Censuses since 1970-71.There is a financial fall-out. The waiver is to Sarkar b e f u n d e d by the state government without a direct central aid. The loan waiver increases the debt to GDP ratio for the UP by nearly 3 percentage points, taking it to about 6 percent of the state GDP. Officially, UP is stated to be bankrupt though its revenue is around Rs 3.40 lakh crore. Would that lead to undesirable higher taxation? This is likely to happen to many states which are reeling from successive droughts and similar loan waivers will lead to state fiscal deficits going out of whack. The overall fiscal deficit of the centre plus states may increase to about Rs 3 lakh crore. The UP government says that it might launch a farm waiver bond for such refinancing. The bonds need guarantee. The centre ultimately may have to be the guarantor. The banks apprehend that such waivers might see a spurt in their NPAs as even
those who have been making regular repayments would stop paying their dues hoping for another waiver. In UP, banks have an exposure of Rs 86,241 crore to small farmers with average loan of Rs 1.34 lakh each. It also entails enormous clerical job and add to the cost of the banks. So despite previous history of loan-waivers by many governments in the past, even at the centre, this should not become the pattern. The nation has to start rethinking. From the point of view of farmers, they are the worst sufferer. Farm input costs have gone up but not the prices. It is a double-edged political sword. If prices of crops are increased it has cascading effect on the economy. As costs rise, credit dries up. Farm debts goes out of control. Finally, it leads to political upheaval. The Narendra Modi government wants a farmcentric economy. The NITI Ayog says till 2022, the promised rise in income of farmers may not happen. But it cannot be delayed too. Modi has to initiate a discussion on looking at farm-economy in a new
manner. Should loans be replaced by some other mechanism? Should that be called subsidy or subsistence? The direct benefit transfer (DBT) has an administrative cost. Subsidies despite problems benefit many others. It is a complex issue and needs thorough discussion. Indian farmers, particularly those who are into cash crops, have complicated problems. The corporate and MNC ingress into farm sector has aggravated it. A long-term solution to the farmers’ financing and marketing is needed. Across political spectrum this is the consensus. Modi has this advantage. If he can initiate a process of discussion in Parliament and in the society, a possible path may be found out. The farmers need support and the society has to evolve a sustainable method. It should keep prices and wages in check and also spur economic growth. Benevolent farm policy is accepted as the best way to spur demand and industrial growth. The UP has made a beginning. India has to make the move to turn the golden leaf, make or break policies, churn the world and yes, WTO.

A new dawn in the Naga sky
or we see a new hope on the horizon if we are to pursue a better future. A dream that bests dreams surging from the inside of the system itself, for a dawn of glorified Nagaland do we see. It has everything to do with Nagaland from development to our social and personal freedom, the right for every Naga far and near to be as one. Yet seems it may as though a ‘vision’ that regards none the dreams the system itself nurtured into its loving fold determined to cause havoc, only if we pause and see the truth. And though it may seem so yet it is not, for we pride being a ‘Naga’ and unifying every Naga to ascend to yonder pedestal of glory and making the world a better place is all that is instilled in our DNA. Writers write, thinkers think and doers do for no one can say “awaken Nagas” just like no one can say “keep sleeping Nagas”. Let those who think that we best wait for a decade more or an infinity more, let them wait. Let those who can’t wait a millisecond more, let

them act. But we all the while better choose the right choice lest you not complain in your misery when hope is all but lost. Which is why, open your inward eye Nagas. Think of what you are about to speak or do and think more of what you’ve already spoken or done. You may be learned much but learn more for there is greater truth and world beyond the reality of Nagaland. Just because we were right once doesn’t mean we will always be met with such gratitude until we last breathe such as so, just because we were wrong once doesn’t mean we have lost the right to be who we truly are. We have today Nagas who can produce world class music, brilliant Naga minds who work in NASA, design clothes for Hollywood Celebrities and the rest of the Charismatic loaed intellectual Nagas who can rebuild the ignorant architecture of our system into a civilized one had the platforms being provided. We today sit in our homes and with all the knowl-
edge to live a productive live but because of the buoyancy of the leaders to repel “common sense” from their reasoning we have become slaves of the obvious transparent ignorant system which needs every little touch but since because the system has become a way of our life,we find it difficult to even change the tiniest little detail of the entirety of this imperfection. For we have understood the system and its deception to keep us inside it for eternity, we cant be slaves no more of the system. The system has to be changed should Nagas need to be free. Free from ignorance driving us to not question what is right and wrong, what is the truth and what is not, the right for everyone to pursue knowledge and search for the truth. For the words are sweet because the real world based on truth and rationality is only sweeter. Imkum Pongen, President Liberal Democratic Party of Nagaland, (ldpnagaland@gmail.com)
‘Facts before theory’
eing a regular reader, I appreciate our writers for the pleasure of reading articles with needed weight and aura, be it a social or individual mindset. But at this juncture a reader is compromised from regular position to a writer with an attempt to clear some air, with regard to some previous articles by fellow brothers. There is always a room for exception; none is perfect, no engine is fully efficient, and even every society has its weaknesses or exceptions, which cannot simply prove the whole society as weak or negative. Man is a social animal and can never live alone, thus came the existence of societies based on different linguistic groups. Based on either genetic or behavioural traits the complete society cannot be called fools or wise even though there are both sections within that society. Criminals have existed in the past, are there with us and will exist in future, but not everyone is a criminal. A society will progress on platforms of positive contribution from majority of its members. A society is simply not great because of few members who belittle the society, a society was and is great because it was built great. The image that a society remains great or not, will depend on how we build or destroy it. As mentioned earlier being a social animal, man cannot detach themselves away
from their own society but, for due period of time a society expels or exiles it’ s members when necessary ; which in turn proves that exceptions do exist since early days till date, but a society must not be victimised because of such exceptions. It is always good to take opportunity or be opportunist but never take opportunities at the loss of others as it may cost you similar losses, please refer to Newton’s third law of motion “for/to every action, there is always an opposite reaction”. An individual may not necessarily represent the entire community, likewise the entire community would never accept the negative impact because of few marginally negative members. Differentiation of fact and theory is eminent before commenting or committing, Having said that, I request Mr. Kenilo Kent to differentiate facts from theory before coming to conclusion, also to feel how an entire community will react to false portrayal of its image, and thereafter glorifying those responsible, it is not less than adding salt to injury. Lastly, fight against “ism” is appreciated and supported, but it’s not good to indulge pleasure and joy at the misery of others unless, otherwise. As, far as constructive views are concerned, let’s keep writing. Mughato Awomi, Thahekhu Village, Dimapur

Appeal to NBSE on upcoming HSLC result
f I go about asking this question in and around Nagaland, I would not be surprised to receive responses that say, “Yes, he still is.” Because it is generally and a dearly held notion that a person does not die as long as he lives in our hearts and that a leader may keep leading us forever as long as people remain disciples to his principles and ideologies. Witnessing the perfection in Gandhi’s ideas and strategies of overthrowing something that is against the good of the people, we, by virtue, chose to keep him alive by adopting Gandhainism on many platforms. Therefore, even after the “light has gone out of our lives’’; we have achieved numerous goals and have failed numerous vices just by doing what we think Gandhi would’ve done. However, in the hereditary process between generations, these principles have been altered so much that the original holder of these principles is now beyond recognition, (unfortunately) especially in Nagaland. We claim to have always been using the legitimate ways and means against someone accused of being against the good of the people. Thus we use the Gandhian strategies of non-cooperation and civil disobedience by means of strike, protest or fasting. But less do we know or follow their original essence that
S
ome teachers are stringent while some generous in allocation of marks to examinees. There may even be occasions when an otherwise generous teacher may have got out of the wrong side of bed and in a foul mood may not have been as generous in his markings on that particular day. Looking at past HSLC results and the toppers in particular, the difference in percentage from top 1 down to 20 in sequence varies from each other in fractions. How is one to judge in what way top 1 is superior to top 20 when it is evident to all that a single teacher may not have necessarily evaluated the scripts all the toppers? Similarly, how about the rest of the students who may have missed the recognition of being in the top 20 by a fraction? How is one to know if the examiners have done justice to their scripts? Again, chances are that the scripts of such students may have been evaluated by a less than generous examiner than the examiner who evaluated the lucky 20? The hypothetical deductions can be endless. The point I want to make here is that, the probability of many deserving students missing the accolade
and recognition of being in the top 20 could be due to a variety of the reasons as argued above. It stands to reason that, by the very fact that such unfortunate students, though having done extremely well, may missed the rarefied top 20 position by a fraction of percentage by a combination of bad luck. Nonetheless, they are equally intelligent, consistent and hardworking throughout and it is only fair that due recognition should be meted out to them in equal measure. These can be done by the NBSE reverting back to the past practice of acknowledging the best 50 students from this coming HSLC result. This will harm no one but only encourage and boost the morale of many hard working students. I trust that many parents will agree with my reasoning which I believe is valid because, we are talking about top 50 out of close to thirty thousand candidates and not out of a couple of hundreds. Being a teacher for more than three decades and in the process scrutinizing and chief examining hundreds of scripts year after year gives me the authority to reflect with some degree of verity on this issue. Meribeni Kikon, Nutun Basti
Is Gandhi alive today? these principles require self-sacrifice, purity, moral strength, harmlessness; that these are not directed against any individual or party but against policies or systems only; that these are solely based on the doctrine of collective welfare, the doctrine of truth, the doctrine of non violence; that the aim should only be about getting legitimate status and not because of hostility against capital (oppressor). Looking at these aspects, can we say that our fight against the prejudiced and the evil going the right direction? Well, I doubt. The “paperwars’’ going on in the current political scenario in Nagaland, I would say, is nothing but massive blocks of confusions being engraved on every person’s mind. While it is fair enough that the idea atleast restrains opponents from engaging in physical brawling, it is also to be wandered if even that should happen in the first place. Here I can say with cer tainty that general spectators with no partial inclination towards any individual or group are sick and tired of the scenario. They no more see who might be right or rather, who CAN be right. It is now less about why people are getting stabbed and more about why people, keep stabbing. If a person keeps pointing at the faults of his neighbor, other people start
to hold more guilt against him than his faulty neighbor. The strategy is to be firm with the truth (because we all religiously believe that the truth eventually prevails), maintain selfrespect and be non-violent both in thought, speech and action, as Gandhi would follow. We want to follow Gandhian principles because we have clearly witnessed that his belief of following rightful means for achieving lasting and durable ends was indeed perfect and benevolent to all kinds of people across the world. But claiming to be following the principles has remained as mere claim for us. We have altered it. His own ideas have been tossed and flipped and used against his own ideas- his
strategy of peaceful strikes and movement are now blended with the opposite notions of his own principles of Satyagraha and Ahimsa. I don’t have the answer for the deformities prevailing today. And I even doubt any individual can bring the fault at the right tracks. Maybe because it is something that only collective efforts of all right minded people can do. We have to improve our mindset and attitude for that. When we stand up against something bad, it should be for construction and not destruction. Perhaps only then, we, the Virtuous Nagas, may find ourselves in a better place tomorrow. Motsuthung Yanthan, Dimapur, (Motsuthungy. my@gmail,com)
Reader’s Post Sir,
Stay safe
There is heat wave that is passing by and citizens need to take precaution against heat stroke. Children need to be told to stay indoors during these hot days even if they are at school. People need to drink plenty of water and keep the body cool. Many a times, elderly people suffer from heat stroke without realizing. The sudden change of climate especially in Dimapur has been affecting people. As a concerned citizen, I believe that we need to take care of ourselves during such extreme climate. people, Temjen said that people made the most corrupted into any important person. That was one of the reasons which made people active competitors in the race of corruption and losing moral values, he said. He also regretted that younger generation of Aos in particular and Nagas in
general failed to inherit the valued legacy and status of older generation. As a result they ended up becoming social parasites. “Instead of inheriting good legacy by becoming better persons in society, we have reduced ourselves to beggar status” which was “a big humiliation to our parents and great failure to our future generation,” he said with deep regret. He encouraged the citizens to emulate the Roman Centurion principles, where patriotism, voluntarism, selfless sacrifice and service with great physical endurance were the main weapons to fight the enemy and serve the nation. Group discussions and sports were the highlights of the program. Leaders and elders from the village exhorted the participants to overcome the ill system of society. The seminar was attended by more than five hundred men below the age of sixty, sponsored by Subo Lkr and his wife.

New Delhi, Apr 9 (PTI): The customs department has unearthed a new modus operandi of sending demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes abroad by courier in a bid to get them converted here later. After these high denomination notes were taken out of circulation by the government in November last, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) were given a longer window till June 30 to get them exchanged, whereas citizens who were in the country at that time were allowed to deposit the old notes till December 30, 2016. Customs officials have registered a few cases,
tax evasion through use of multiple PAN cards. The e-filing portal has already activated a functionality of linking PAN with Aadhaar. Over 1.08 crore assessees have already Aadhaar-linked PAN but the number is abysmally low as there are over 25 crore PAN card holders in the country, while Aadhaar has been issued to 111 crore people. As per statistics with the tax department, only 6 crore people file income tax returns at present. The official said that linking of PAN with Aadhaar should not be cumbersome for people whose registered mobile number with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is active.

it said, requesting the PSBs to “look into the matter and conclude the next wage revision prior to the effective date of November 1, 2017”. The wage revision of public sector bank employees takes place every five year. The last revision was effected in November 2012. In the last wage negotiation between PSU banks employee unions and bank management, Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) had settled at 15 per cent hike. Recently, Banks Board Bureau chief Vinod Rai had made a case that the compensation package across the board of public sector banks needs to be improved.

In such cases, government has allowed a simple uploading of a scanned copy of PAN on the Aadhaar website. The tax department will start educating taxpayers from this week through media outreach on ways to link the PAN with Aadhaar, an official told PTI. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had through amendment to tax proposals in the Finance Bill of the Budget for 2017-18, had made Aadhaar mandatory for filing income tax returns and provided for linking of PAN with Aadhaar to curb

NEW DELHI, Apr 9 (PTI): The finance ministry has asked the heads of public sector banks to finalise the modalities for timely implementation of the next pay revision from November. There are 21 public sector banks, post merger of six lenders with SBI, in the country. They together employ about 8 lakh people. In a communication to CEOs and MDs of the state-owned banks, the ministry advised them to initiate the steps for smooth conclusion of next wage revision of the employee within the time-frame. “However, it is seen that several banks are yet to proceed in the matter,”

In a reminder, the organization has appealed State government to sanction independent EAC post to EAC Hq Khuza along with infrastructure development. Further, to develop the area, PAPO and all its constituent units resolve to help, support and uplift one another and extend special support to the weaker and less developed villages.
New Delhi, Apr 9 (PTI): Individuals struggling to link their Permanent Account Number with Aadhaar because of differently spelt names can now simply upload a scanned copy of PAN to get the work done. Besides, the tax department is planning to introduce an option on the efiling portal through which taxpayers can choose to link the Aadhaar without changing the name by opting for a One-Time Password (OTP), provided that the year of birth of the person matches in both documents. With the linking of PAN with Aadhaar being made mandatory, individuals can log on to e-filing website of the income tax

Hasmukh Adhia had last week told PTI that the new column of cash deposits made during November 9, 2016 and December 30, 2016 was a one-time feature in the ITR and would not be there in the ITR from next year onwards. The ITR, he had said, would evolve or change every year depending on the need. While coming out with new ITRs, the CBDT had also rationalised them and cut down the number of forms to seven from earlier nine. While all taxpayers will have to now mandatorily link Aadhaar with their PAN cards, ITR1 (Sahaj) form has been shortened from 7 page to 1 page to enable filing of returns by people with income up to Rs 50 lakh by July 31. ITR2 is to be filed by individuals and HUFs who do not have income from business or profession and ITR3 is filed by individuals and HUFs having income from a proprietary business or profession. Also ITR 2 and ITR 3 also have a Schedule AL which require assessees to declare their assets and liabilities at the end of the fiscal.

The names of three winners were not yet known as the draw only displayed their transaction numbers. These will be matched with card details to identify the winners. Three merchants also won prizes of Rs 50 lakh, Rs 25 lakh and Rs 12 lakh, respectively. The winners will be felicitated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 14 at Nagpur on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti. Following demonetisation of old Rs 500/1000 notes on November 9 last year, the government took a slew of measures to promote digital payments in the country.

The tax department will collate the data it has of cash payments made in excess of Rs 2 lakh with the returns filed. “We want to see if the income profile matches with the cash payments made,” he said. The move comes amid concerns of unaccounted cash or black money being used to settle bills after credit cards were used to make heavy purchases. It could also be that black money could have been used to repay loans. Post-demonetisation, the government had provided a 50-day window beginning November 9, 2016 to deposit the junked notes in bank accounts. For those with unaccounted cash, it gave them one last opportunity to come clean by depositing 50 per cent of it as tax and parking another 25 per cent in a zero- interest bearing deposit for four years. The changes made in ITR are an attempt to catch tax evaders, the official said. Revenue Secretar y

New Delhi, Apr 9 (PTI): All cash payments of over Rs 2 lakh for paying loans and credit card bills during the 50-day period post demonetisation will have to be disclosed in the new one-page Income Tax return form. The tax department a few days back notified new Income Tax Return (ITR) forms for filing of returns for the Assessment Year 2017-18 (financial year 2016-17). Besides providing for declaring income, exemption claimed and tax paid, the forms have a new column providing for declaration for any deposit of over Rs 2 lakh in bank accounts made during November 9 and December 30, 2016 after the old 500 and 1,000 rupee notes were demonetised. This column is also to be used for declaring cash payments in excess of Rs 2 lakh for repayment of any loan or settlement of credit card bills during this 50-day period, a senior official told PTI here. “The column is an attempt to match the cash deposits made post demonetisation with the annual income,” he said. 45 killed, 120 injured in Egypt church bombings
Six terror suspects killed in Indonesia J a k arta , A pr 9 (IANS): At least six terror suspects were killed in a gunfight with the police in Indonesia’s East Java, an official said on Sunday. National Police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar said the killed terrorists were members of Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) cornered in a rice plantation of Tuban regency after firing at two traffic police on Saturday, Xinhua news agency reported. Amar said the standoff started around 10 a.m. on Saturday when they fired at two Tuban policemen from a car. During the chase, they got out of the car and fled into the rice field where they were eventually shot dead by mobile brigade and counter-terrorism police. The police seized the suspects’ car, six firearms, dozens of 9 mm bullets, four cell phones, a two-way radio, knives and terror-related propaganda material. “The attack is an order from Zainal Anshori, JAD leader, as a revenge of his arrest by counter-terrorism police on Friday,” Amar said.

while 41 others injured in Alexandria’s suicide attack. The latest figure puts the combined death toll from the Tanta and Alexandria attacks at 45. In a statement, the Interior ministry said a suicide bomber had planned to blow
up himself using an explosive belt inside the church in Alexandria, but the security forces stopped him. A police officer and a policewoman, as well a lowranking police officer, were killed while preventing the suicide bomber from entering the cathedral, the ministr y said. It said Pope Tawadros II was inside the cathedral leading Palm Sunday Mass, but he was not harmed in the attack. However, Egypt’s Coptic church said Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria, had left the church just before the blast. Saint Mark’s Cathedral is the historical seat of the

Insurgents kill 13 Afghan forces in separate attacks
Dhaka, Apr 9 (IANS): Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Sunday said there was no legal bar to execute the death penalty on militant leader Mufti Hannan as President Abdul Hamid has rejected the clemency plea, a media reported. “The Kashimpur Jail authorities have started the preparation, Mufti Hannan will be executed anytime,” the Home Minister said while talking to media at his secretariat office here, the Dhaka Tribune reported. “There’s no threat of militant attack centring the execution of the militant leader,” he added in reply to a query. On March 21, the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division released the full text of its verdict confirming the death penalties of Harkat-ul Jihad al-Islami Bangladesh (HujiB) leader Mufti Hannan and his two aides. The culprits were sentenced to death for the assassination attempt on Anwar Choudhury, the then British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, during his visit to Hazrat Shahjalal’s
US sends aircraft carrier close to N Korea waters Washington, Apr 9 (IANS): The US has ordered the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and its strike force towards waters near North Korea, as a show of force against the military provocations of the Kim Jong-un regime. Pentagon sources on Saturday told CNN that US Pacific Command chief Admiral Harry B. Harris Jr. has ordered the Nimitzclass supercarrier and all its support ships towards the Korean peninsula. The USS Carl Vinson -- controlled by the US Third Fleet in the Pacific ocean -- suspended a scheduled visit to Australia and after leaving Singapore turned towards the Korean peninsula. It was already deployed to the peninsula a month ago to participate in the annual military exercises with South Korea. Defence sources said the deployment was in response to the new military developments in North
Mufti Hannan shrine in Sylhet city on May 21, 2004. The attack killed three persons and severely injured Anwar. On December 23, 2008, a Sylhet court sentenced the trio to death and two others to lifetime imprisonment for their roles in the attack. The High Court upheld the sentences in February 2016. Hannan was also sentenced to death for the 2001 Ramna Batamul bombing, in which 10 persons were killed. The HujiB militant group was formed in 1992 and claims to have carried out at least 14 attacks, killing more than 100 people in the pursuit of “establishing Shariah law in Bangladesh”.
Kabul, Apr 9 (PTI): Insurgents have killed at least 13 Afghan security forces in separate attacks, officials said on Sunday, as the country struggles to contain a long-running Taliban insurgency and combat a growing threat from a local Islamic State affiliate. Munir Ahmad Farhad, spokesman for the governor of the northern Balkh province, said a roadside bomb killed nine security forces and wounded several others the night before in the Chimtal district, where they were waging an ongoing operation against the Taliban. He said five insurgents have been killed and dozens wounded. In a separate incident, Islamic State militants attacked the Darzab district headquarters in the neighboring Jawzjan province Saturday night, and that gun battles were still underway, said Mohammad Reza Ghafori, spokesman for the provincial governor. “We have asked for reinforcements as well as air support to battle the IS militants there,” he said.

CAIRO, APR 9 (PTI): At least 45 people were killed and nearly 120 others injured in powerful blasts triggered by ISIS in two churches packed with worshippers celebrating Palm Sunday in Egypt’s Tanta and Alexandria cities, the deadliest attacks on the minority Coptic Christians in recent years. The explosion targeted the front rows in the church hall. Among those killed is Samuel George, the head of Tanta Court. Hours later, a suicide bomber struck the Saint Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Alexandria’s Manshyia district, police said. Citing Health Minister Ahmed Emad, ON TV news channel said at least 18 people, including police personnel, were killed
tals to receive the injured. The president called for a National Defence Council meeting in response to the attack. The National Defence Council is made up of the prime minister, the speaker of parliament, the minister of defence and the commanders of the Egyptian armed forces, and is chaired by the president. Egypt also announced three days of mourning. Al-Azhar, the world’s highest seat of Sunni Islam, strongly condemned the attacks, calling it an “outrageous crime” against all Egyptians. “This terrorist attack is devoid of all the principles of humanity and civilisation,” it said in a statement. Al-Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed El-Tayyeb stressed Al-Azhar’s solidarity with the Egyptian Church in the wake of attacks. The US Embassy in Egypt condemned “the heinous, reprehensible terrorist attack against peaceful worshippers.” “The US stands firmly with the Egyptian government and people to defeat terrorism,” the Embassy said in a statement. The explosion comes weeks before the visit of Pope Francis to Egypt on April 28-29.
No political solution in Syria with Assad in power: Haley Washington, Apr 9 (IANS): US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley on Sunday said there is no political solution to the conflict in Syria until President Bashar alAssad is out of power. “There’s not any sort of option where a political solution is going to happen with Assad at the head of the regime,” Haley told CNN in an interview airing on Sunday. The Indian-origin diplomat’s remarks came days after the US on April 6 unleashed 59 Tomahawk missiles at a Syrian airbase in a retaliating for the Assadled government’s alleged chemical weapons attack that killed nearly 80 persons in Idlib province. Turkey’s rival parties rally for votes ahead of referendum I stan b u l , A pr 9 (IANS): Turkey’s political parties held mass rallies on Saturday, a week ahead of a referendum on whether to shift to the presidential system. The “yes” campaign led by the ruling Justice and Development Party and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan gathered in Istanbul’s Yenikapi Square for its biggest rally so far, with the participation of nearly one million people, Xinhua news agency reported. “Is Istanbul ready to say ‘yes’ on April 16?” the president asked the crowd. Erdogan argued that a “yes” vote will contribute to the Turkish struggle against the Islamic State terrorist group and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is listed as a terror organisation by Turkey, the US and the European Union. He vowed that Turkey

Suicide bombing rocks refugee camp in Syria Da m asc u s, A pr 9 (IANS): A suicide bombing rocked a refugee camp inside the Syrian territories near the Jordanian borders on Saturday, activities said. The explosion, believed to have been caused by a car bomb, rattled the Rukban camp located in the far Syrian desert on the borders with Jordan, leaving many people wounded, Xinhua quoted the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights as saying. The London-based watchdog said unidentified warplanes flew over the area after the blast. Meanwhile, the Observatory said clashes erupted between the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group and other rebel groups in the Tanf area close to the Rukban camp. Other activists said five were killed by the explosion, which is believed to have been carried out by IS to target rival rebel groups in the camp.

fter his second single track and the 2015 Song of the year at the 7th Music Award of Nagaland - Agape Love, Sanepong Tzudir is back again after a silent year with his latest track “The Anniversary” which is directed towards and dedicated to Rev. O. Alem and his wife on the commemoration of their 45th wedding anniversary. The song expresses about the voyage of love and the contented relationship the couple has been sharing throughout their 45 years of
marriage which is still standing strong. They are the embodiment of true love on whom we can look up to in this modern age. Through different seasons of life God has led them both. Love and prayer for the couple as they soar higher into the realm of heaven and may they reflect God’s love with hope and truth. May their legacy grow and their posterity. op icon Sir Elton John has been named the first ever Record Store Day ‘Legend’ to celebrate the vinyl festival’s 10th anniversary. In a video released by RSD making the announcement, Sir Elton goes into his long held affection for vinyl, from his mother’s weekly purchases of 78s (such as ‘At The Hop’ by Danny & The Julians) and 45s (Jackie Wilson’s ‘Reet Petite’), to his latest purchase; a bootleg copy of Kanye’s ‘The Life Of Pablo’. He adds, “It cost a fortune. I don’t know where they found it from, but I got that.” The musician also reveals that he put in a few shifts at Musicland in Berwick Street when the owner wanted to take a lunch break. “I love to see what people choose,” he explains. “I can go into a record store in Vegas and spend three hours there. Just the smell of it and the looking at it… the memories.”

kumer, a London based multimedia artist from Nagaland. After completing his MA Graphics in Baroda, lived and worked in Delhi before moving to London to study Printmaking at the Royal College of Art in 2001. He now returns to Delhi for this solo show of his new works at the India International Centre. His latest work, ‘Gods Summit’, envisions a utopian conversation amongst the Gods and Prophets about the predicament of what humanity has done to itself. In the installation a tent functions as the symbolic meeting place of the summit. Collaged sound clips from films in multiple languages form the Gods’ deliberation, with translation projected nearby. Temsuyanger highlights events from global history at some key pivotal moments where irreversible change has occurred. This seminal piece of work raises the question of what it means to have power, control, authority, wisdom, vision. Surrounding the installation are photographs of the series of sculptures ‘SUPERSTARS, Portraits of Remarkable People I Have Met’. Buffalo skulls form the base of the sculptures, each crafted with various materials to characterise the individual protagonists. The use of buffalo skulls originates from the traditional Naga practice of adorning dwellings with animal skulls to commemorate special events. Temsuyanger is referencing this dying culture and adds personalised symbolism to these portraits. The juxtaposition of the two works in this exhibition reflects on Temsuyanger’s interest in spiritual belief systems, archetypes and inspirational characters as well as overlapping truths in a multicultural society.

B e n g a lu ru, A p r 9 (IANS): Ramkumar Ramanathan and Prajnesh Gunneswaran produced contrasting results in their respective reverse singles matches as India completed a 4-1 win over Uzbekistan in their Davis Cup Asia/ Oceania Group I second round tie here on Sunday. R a m k u m a r Ramanathan beat Sanjar Fayziev in straight sets in the first reverse singles to hand India a 4-0 lead in the tie. Ramanathan won 6-3, 6-2 against his 22-yearold Uzbek opponent in a match which lasted for around an hour. Later in the day, Temur Ismailov defeated Prajnesh Gunneswaran 7-5, 6-3 in around 70 minutes to clinch a consolation win for the visitors. I n d i a h ave n ow qualified for the Davis World Group Play-off which they will play at
home in September. The Indians had already won the five-match tie when Rohan Bopanna and Sriram Balaji defeated Fa r r u k h D u s t ov a n d Sanjar Fayziev 6-2, 6-4, 6-1 in the doubles match on Saturday to hand them an unassailable 3-0 lead. Ramanathan enjoyed a n exc e l l e n t s t a r t t o Sunday’s contest against Fayziev when he broke the Uzbek’s serve in the second game of the opening set. Fayziev had conceded the first two points through unforced errors before an excellent return of serve by Ramanathan handed him three break points. Fayziev saved one break point with a big first serve followed by excellent placement before reducing the gap to 30/40 with a couple of excellent placements. The Indian however, won the next point to earn the break and take a 2-0 lead
in the first set. Ramanathan then held his serve at love to go 3-0 up. Fayziev had a chance to earn a break of his own in the fifth game when he put pressure on Ramanathan’s serve. But the Indian did well to utilise his powerful serves and some superb forehand returns to hold serve. The issue went with the serve before Ramanathan went on to win the first set in 37 minutes. Ramanathan enjoyed a strong start to the second set as well, breaking his opponent in the very first game. The next five games went with the serve before some excellent returns by Ramanathan and a few unforced errors by Fayziev ear ned the Indian his second break of the set. The Chennai lad then held serve with ease to wrap up the second set and the match.

sports China’s Lin grabs first ever Malaysia Open title K UC H I NG , A p r 9 (Agencies): China’s Lin Dan, a two-time Olympic champion, on Sunday engineered a brilliantly ruthless strategy against arch-rival Malaysian world number one Lee Chong Wei to win his first ever Malaysia Open badminton title. Showing no sign of fatigue, 33-year-old Lin pushed Lee, one year his senior, from back to front, forcing the recent All England Open winner into unforced errors to bag a win 21-19, 21-14 in 55 minutes. The two badminton veterans started cautiously, and Lee, the favourite in the tournament, began securing points with his killer cross-court smashes. But Lin kept his calm, resorting to long rallies, swift returns and precision net play to defeat Lee. With the unexpected victory, Lin has now won every major title the sport has to offer.
Malaga stun 10-man Barca; Real, Atletico draw M a d r i d, A p r 9 (Agencies): Neymar was sent off for the first time in his Barcelona career as his side lost ground in the title race in La Liga with a 2-0 defeat at Malaga on Saturday. Barcelona had a chance to gain on Real Madrid, who were held to a draw earlier in the day by Atletico Madrid, but instead fell three points back of the leaders, who still have a game in hand. Sandro gave Malaga the lead in the 32nd minute when he chased down a long ball from Juan Carlos and slotted past Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Neymar had earlier been booked for timewasting, and he became the first Barcelona player to be sent off in La Liga since October 2015 after fouling Diego Llorente in the 66th minute. Barcelona thought they had a penalty with eight minutes to play, but the referee controversially ruled that Sergi Roberto was outside the box, and substitute Jony sealed M a l a g a ’s w i n w i t h a stoppage-time goal on a

The hosts’ Nicolas Mahut and Julien Benneteau defeated Jamie Murray and Dominic Inglot 7-6 5-7 7-5 7-5 in Rouen, eliminating Great Britain without the need for two scheduled singles rubbers on Sunday. Dan Evans and Kyle Edmund had previously lost singles matches on Friday, meaning Saturday’s
doubles was a must-win for Great Britain but they were ultimately unable to keep the quarter-final alive into the final day. France, who haven’t won the Davis Cup in 16 years, asserted their dominance immediately on Saturday when Mahut and Benneteau snatched the opening set on a tiebreak. Across the entire tie, it was France’s seventh consecutive set without Britain winning any. The rot was stopped, albeit briefly, by Britain’s doubles team when Inglot struck a majestic lob to gain
on 52 minutes when Toni Kroos’ free kick was headed in by Pepe for the defender’s first goal since September. However, with just five minutes remaining, Griezmann slotted home for his third goal in his last four appearances at the Bernabeu to claim a vital point for Atletico and hamper their rivals’ title hopes.

control of the second set allowing Murray to serve his side onto the scoreboard. It would prove to be Britain’s finest moment of the quarter-final. Mahut, a former world No 1 at doubles, showed his class in the third set moments after wasting a set point by forcing another advantage for France, which they took to go 2-1 ahead. Mahut played a shot from the crowd’s side of the advertising hoardings in the stand-out moment of the final set, which France deservedly took to confirm a semi-final.

Stroll saw the safety car used, with Vettel opting to pit for dry tyres on the second lap. It proved the right decision as the track dried out and those ahead of him were forced to change tyres on lap four, with Vettel now back in sixth. However, a crash for Sauber’s Antonio Giovinazzi, meant the safety car was deployed again and Hamilton and co could pit without losing time. That gave Hamilton the ability to retain the lead and hold off the pack for the remainder of the race. Vettel was up to the challenge of working his way back up the field, h o w e v e r, e v e n t u a l l y passing Verstappen on lap 28, before unsuccessfully attempting to wrangle the lead from Hamilton. Verstappen’s performance itself had been stunning to take third, he moved up nine places on the first lap alone and displayed the kind of passing ability that was reminiscent of the late Ayrton Senna in another performance that earmarked him as a future world champion.

The Mercedes driver dominated the race in Asia from start to finish in wet conditions, with Ferrari’s Vettel coming home second, in a duel that is tipped to define the 2017 season. Highly rated youngster Max Verstappen, driving for Red Bull, rose the grid from 16th to finish in third and move up to the same position in the overall standings. Verstappen’s t e a m - m a t e, D a n i e l Ricciardo, was hot on his heels in fourth, beating out Ferrari’s Raikkonen and Mercedes’ Bottas in fifth and sixth respectively. Man Utd see off 10-man Sunderland
Manchester United moved to within four points of the Champions League places following their victory over the Black Cats.
Lo n d o n, A p r 9 (Agencies): Manchester United kept their top-four hopes alive as they strolled to a comfortable 3-0 victory at Sunderland, who had Seb Larsson controversially sent off. Zlatan Ibrahimovic put United 1-0 up on 30 minutes with a fine turn and low shot on the edge of the box, before Larsson was harshly sent off by Craig Pawson for a high tackle on Ander Herrera. Just 45 seconds after the restart, United were 2-0 up through Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who found the bottom left corner from 15 yards with his left foot as Sunderland stood off. Substitute Marcus Rashford added a third with a minute remaining, finishing well into the bottom corner from inside the area after Ibrahimovic’s assist. The result means Sunderland remain bottom of the Premier League, 10 points from safety with seven games remaining, while United are up to fifth, four points off fourth-place Man City but with a game in hand. Lingard, who was awarded with a new contract in midweek, but the Englishman’s low effort from the edge of the box was tipped wide by Jordan Pickford. But Pickford could do nothing about the opening goal a minute later when Ibrahimovic’s turn and shot from nothing 18 yards out curled into the bottom right-hand corner. The hosts were reduced to 10 men just two minutes before the break when Larsson’s slightly high foot went through Herrera; referee Pawson did not hesitate in pulling out the red card when a yellow arguably seemed more appropriate. After the break, United were ahead before Sunderland had managed to touch the ball as Mkhitaryan struck well into the bottom corner, but the Armenian had Lamine Kone to thank for standing off him inside the area. Chances were at a premium after the second goal, though Ibrahimovic did go close to adding a second with a deflected cross-shot, which Pickford
reacted well to. Paul Pogba wildly volleyed over the bar from Ibrahimovic’s cut-back, before Jermain Defoe fired just over the bar with a well-struck effort from the edge of the box at the other end. Rashford wrapped up the points in the 89th minute, finishing into the bottom left corner from 10 yards out after man-of-thematch Ibrahimovic had teed him up. It ended 3-0, meaning United are still in the hunt for a top four Premier League spot, while Sunderland have now gone 675 minutes without a goal in the top flight.
Classy Chelsea maintain 7-pt lead
Chelsea maintained their seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League with an exciting 3-1 win over a trying Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium. A n t o n i o C o n t e ’s side knew they needed three points going into the game after second-placed Spurs made light work of Watford in the early kickoff, defeating the Hornets
4-0 at White Hart Lane. Indeed, it was Chelsea who broke the deadlock in the 17th minute when Diego Costa’s scuffed effort deflected off Adam Smith before beating the helpless Artur Boruc. The visitors doubled their lead three minutes later when Eden Hazard produced a sublime run before netting his 14th Premier League goal of the campaign – the Belgian’s third in a week. Eddie Howe’s team were hand a lifeline just before the break after Joshua King’s deflected shot squeezed past Thibaut Courtois. But the three points were wrapped in the 68th m i nu t e w h e n M a r c o s Alonso curled his superb free-kick into the top corner to hand the Pensioners their fifth win in six league games. Chelsea seem to have shaken off the surprise loss to Crystal Palace last week and will take a huge step towards the title if they overcome Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United in their next game on the 16th of April.
