Farmers’ stir turns violent; Rahul arrested
Farmers throw onions and other vegetables during the protest on Thursday. Rahul Gandhi being arrested. (PTI) NEW DELHI, JUN 8 (AGENCIES): Violence flared up in Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh after five protesters were killed in police firing with farmers blocking highways, torching factories and attacking government officials. At least 56 persons were arrested and over 100 detained in connection with the violence, police said. A two-hour relaxation period in the curfew from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m in the four police station areas of Mandsur city and Pipliamandi in the district passed off peacefully and Collector O P Srivastava said that it can be eased further tomorrow. SDM Mandsaur N S Rajawat said that the curfew
relaxation was made only for women and children up to the age of 10 years in Mandsaur and Pipliamandi. But as the situation improved the authorities decided to extend the relaxation for all. Hundreds of farmers have also decided to sit on an indefinite strike in Rajasthan’s Pratapgarh district from next week, the third BJP-ruled state after Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh to be rocked by crop protests after a drought year. Maha farmers serve ultimatum: The first meeting of the new steering committee comprising representatives of various farmers’ groups of Maharashtra on
Thursday resolved to amplify their protests if their demands, including a complete loan waiver, were not accepted by the state government by June 11. Farm protests have spread like wildfire across India’s food bowl states in recent weeks with a slew of suicides in neighbouring Maharashtra and simmering discontent in Rajasthan. The farmers complain of a lack of storage facilities that forces them to either abandon produce or sell them at below-par prices – a result of chronic underinvestment in India’s agriculture sector. Farmers in western Madhya Pradesh are pro-
testing since June 1 demanding debt waiver, higher minimum support prices (MSP) for their produce, among others. In view of the volatile situation, the Centre had rushed 1,100 personnel of RAF to the violence-hit state The Chouhan government had sought to cool the tempers by announcing certain measures, including a loan settlement scheme for those cultivators who had defaulted on repayment of farm loan borrowed by them earlier. Meanwhile, a political storm over violent farmer protests in Madhya Pradesh intensified on Thursday as Congress vice president
Rahul Gandhi was arrested and held for hours before finally meeting families of five farmers who died in police firing two days ago. “I am being stopped everywhere from UP to MP. I just wanted to meet the family of the deceased. Don’t I have the right? The MP government has created problems for everyone,” said Gandhi in Doria. Police stopped Gandhi and a slew of top Congress leaders outside Mandsaur that has been scorched by angry agitations with several vehicles burnt and buildings torched. “Modi cannot waive loans of farmers, cannot give them bonuses…he can only give them bullets,” Gandhi said. Meanwhile, Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh on Thursday came under widespread criticism for taking part in a yoga camp amid the killing of five farmers in Madhya Pradesh. Mohan attended a yoga camp of Baba Ramdev at Motihari, his hometown in Bihar. When journalists sought his reaction over the killing of the farmers, Radha Mohan Singh advised them not to bother but to practise yoga.

Income Tax raids in cities; epicentre in Nagaland KOCHI, JUN 8 (AGENCIES): Sleuths of the Income Tax department carried out searches at some 30 premises owned by the Pandalam-based Sreevalsam group in the wake of suspicion that the group was involved in dubious financial activity, possessed assets that did not match with its known income, and operated businesses in Nagaland in the name of tribal ‘benami’ owners, reports The Hindu. According to the report, searches, which were going on at some 25 locations primarily near Pandalam and Mavelikara in Kerala besides Bengaluru and Delhi, followed suspicion about the group’s sudden growth in the past five years and the huge influx of money into its business, which varied from jewellery and textiles to resorts and even a school at Aranmula, said a top investigator. The officer said group chairman Rajendran Pillai was a Deputy Superintendent of Police in the Nagaland Police, where he got retained on contract postretirement. “It is next to impossible that a government employee
has the resources to operate businesses of this scale, both in Nagaland and the rest of India. Their properties in Kerala alone are valued at about Rs. 200 crore and the group recently acquired some five or six new resorts.” The officer also cast suspicion over tribal persons from Nagaland figuring as stakeholders in companies of the group which were doing spare parts business, ran bakeries, owned fuel stations, and carried out civil contracts for the Nagaland Police. “This reinforces our suspicion as Mr. Pillai, who had joined the force as a constable over 30 years ago, is now in-charge of their transportation wing.” “While their IT assessment is done at Dimapur in Nagaland, their assets are mostly in Kerala. Considering that outsiders are not allowed to own land in Nagaland, co-opting tribals from Nagaland as owners of certain businesses there certainly raises suspicion,” the officer said. The group had five jewellery shops and their gold loan firm operated about 50 branches across the State.
Nagaland’s future not for sale: NNPGs No changes in Nagaland BJP Power shutdown in Dimapur for jungle cutting unit set up, says Ram Madhav
DIMAPUR, JUN 8 (NPN): Media Cell of Working Group (WG) of the Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) has hit out at the NSCN (I-M) for taking people of Nagaland for a ride in the post-August 3,2015 ‘Framework Accord’ by “promising imaginary political institution” whereas the government of India had made it clear, time and again, that breaking up neighbouring Indian state “to integrate all Naga inhabited areas” was out of question. WG said NNPGs reaffirm the aspiration of all Nagas to live under one political roof yet when the most essential component of the Naga quest-integration of Naga areas- was not on the anvil, the “profound sounding political terminologies cannot silence indigenous tribes of Nagaland.” Further WG said civil societies and tribes of Nagaland would have no hesitation to tell the government of India , that if the question of integration was outside the purview of the GoI-NSCN(I-M) talks, then separate and acceptable solutions be had for Nagas living in various Indian administered territories
Daily change of fuel prices from June 15
without ambiguity. WG said while the government of India has made its position clear over the issue of Naga integration; the NSCN (I-M) leadership, “inexplicably continues to indulge in unrepentant theatrical politics in their nonexistent land call Nagalim.” According to WG, the church, tribes and intellectuals have pointed out the flaw in the ongoing talks for the last 20 years adding “a single political group cannot decide the political future of all Nagas.” WG reiterated that the Framework Accord signed on August 3,2015 has no mention of ‘Manipur or any other state’ which warranted a decisiveness from the government of India to understand the situation and address the aspirations of -1.Nagas of Nagaland,2.Nagas of Manipur,3.Nagas of Assam and 4.Nagas of Arunachal Pradesh. WG also hit out at NSCN (I-M) MIP for “churning out press releases” by names from proper Nagaland such as– Akaho Assumi, Elian Z. Lotha, Zeneituo Angami, Hukavi Yepthomi etc. “as authors worshipping the Framework Agreement.” (Full text on p-6)

‘Government school students second to none’
Director, School Education, Wonthungo Tsopoe (Inset) Students present choreography. (NP)
Correspondent
CHUKITONG/WOKHA, JUN 8 (NPN): State director of School Education, Wonthungo Tsopoe on Thursday said students studying in government schools were second to none and that they were equally competent. Speaking as guest of honour on the first day of Government Higher Secondary School Chukitong 75 years celebration programme here at Chukitong, the director reminded the students that they should not think that studying in government schools would not make them a successful person.
“Fear God, obey your parents and teachers; this is the only formula that will make you become someone in society,” he told the studnets. Opining that nowadays acquiring mere degrees was not going to make the students survive, the director said that the school education department was now more inclined towards introducing vocational streams in order to equip today’s youth to stand on their own feet. Lamenting that “today we are living in a fragmented society, divided by the narrow domestic walls of egoism, selfishness, self-pride, self-righteousness, insecu-
rity, disrespect for elders, and loss of work culture,” the director said, the people needed to overcome these negative thoughts which deviate them from building a strong and vibrant society through envisaging of new visions for the greater common good of all. Reminding teachers that teaching is an “art” and that the destiny of a nation was built within the four walls of the classroom, Tsopoe said teachers should keep in mind the importance of their roles towards the making of a better society. “Your commitment and dedication towards your profession will impact the
life of the child. You are the book to be read by posterity. The million dollar question is what kind of a book you want to be for others to read,” he added, saying the very nobility of teaching profession needed to be restored through dedication and hard work to meet new challenges. Special invitee for the programme was Yansathung Yanthan, retired head pundit of the school in 195557 and 1958-67. Chukitong Range Public Orgnization chairman Ezanimo Kikon and LSU president Libemo Tsopoe delivered short speeches; advocate and public notary Oren Humtsoe spoke on behalf of the school’s pioneers’ families, Dr. Y. Y. Kikon reminisced on the school’s past, GHSS Chukitong headmaster S. Mhonchan Kikon delivered welcome address and assistant headmaster Chanbemo Kikon proposed vote of thanks. Singh in a clarification maintained that as he was promoting adventure related activities, they planned to visit Dzukou along with nature lovers, as also to bring good relationships
with NAAME and neighboring Nagaland. “So, we the team of 62 members led by me went to Dzukou to witness the beauty of nature. Barp e ta ( A ssam ) , Jun 8 (PTI): Echoes of the farmer agitation in Madhya Pradesh were heard today in Assam where Youth Congress blocked NH 31 in Barpeta district and demonstrated against BJP government at the Centre and death of five farmers in MP. Youth Congress members led by its Barpeta district unit president Santanu Sarma and working president Azad Hussain blocked NH 31 at Kaljhar and accused the Narendra Modi government at the Centre of following an anti–farmer policy affecting agricultur-

The agitators alleged that because of the government’s “anti–farmer policy” five of the thousands of farmers who came out to protest in Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh yesterday had to lose their life. Farmers in MP have been protesting since June 1 demanding a higher minimum support price (MSP) for their produce amongst other issues. However, the situation escalated on Tuesday when five people were killed in police firing at Mandsaur leading to the clamping of curfew.

Barring an opposition Hill State People’s Democratic Party legislator, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, no Meghalaya minister was present at the residence or at the Assam Regimental Centre to pay homage to Major Manlun. Major Manlun was awarded with the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card for a number of successful operations and in recognition of his exemplary service on August 15 last. At the same time, many senior bureaucrats and technocrats, including ministers, MLAs and other elected bodies are “intentionally sidelined” from the day-to-day work of the government, he alleged. The statement also
pointed out that the state government was “not able to monitor the flow and availability of cash” in the state. The concept of digital transaction is “absolutely next to impossible” to achieve in a traditional joint family system of tribal societies, he said. “As a result, even after post demonetization there is no cash in various banks of the capital and other parts of the state,” Sanjoy claimed.

The farmers are now being pushed towards backyard poultry farming to increase the egg production. “Our emphasis will be on how to increase egg production in the state to avoid importing poultry products from other states”, he added.
The livestock mission also aims at improving the livelihood of the farmers. The farmers are being trained on rearing the layer, broiler and turkey poultry as well as on hatching program. Domestic birds of many kinds, like chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese are reared because of the eggs and tender meat. organisations) seeking 1951 as the cut-off year for citizenship of people residing in Assam against what it is now – 1971 according to the Assam Accord. The Ulfa is also supporting the demand of changing the cut-off for granting citizenship from existing 1971 to 1951. The peace-talks with Ulfa started after Ulfa chairman Arbinda Rajkhowa was arrested and deported from Bangladesh in 2009. In April 2010 Ulfa joined the peace-talks to resolve the conflict situation in state. Though another faction of the outfit led by its elusive military commander Paresh Baruah refused to join the peace-process. The progressive faction of NDFB signed the ceasefire agreement with the government in 2005. Pointing out that state government representatives were also present in the meeting, security sources said that NDFB chief Ranjan Daimary would also be attending the peace-talks. Mr Daimary was also apprehended in Bangladesh and deported to India. He was released from judicial custody in Assam to start the peace-process.
Bible allows us to eat beef, says Mizoram BJP chief AIZAWL JUN 8 (AGENCIES): Beef may be an anathema for the BJP in the rest of the country, but there is nothing to worry about in Mizoram, State BJP chief J V Hluna has assured people in the State. Amid the crackdown on cattle slaughter, Hluna said that there is no problem in eating beef in Mizoram as its consumption is allowed in the Bible. Mizoram has over 87% Christians and eating beef here is a norm. Speaking to media persons, he said that people should not worry about central government’s notification on cattle ban. ‘I am aware about the recent government notification on cattle ban but I would like to clarify that as per bible eating beef is allowed,’ he said. Allowed in Bible When asked if central BJP would object over eating beef in the state, he said, ‘When our party president Amit Shah was in Mizoram, we asked him about the controversy over banning beef across India. He assured us there is nothing to worry and asked us to follow our tradition. And, as per bible and our tradition consumption beef is allowed.’

ike recent revelations in the media, which pertain to irregularities in appointments under various government departments, the facts and figures brought out by the Public Service Aspirants Nagaland(PSAN) again remind public that no amount of criticism can make those in power ever feel embarrassed. Such “irregular appointments” happen when those in power feel they are only doing what is needed, in order to help people because regularising posts would never happen and even if it did, it would take ages. What has been astounding about these entire backdoor, irregular or illegal appointments is the magnitude of the involvement of not only the bureaucracy or politicians but also certain vested interests. The Public Service Aspirants of Nagaland (PSAN) could well be understood as a group of qualified youth looking for employment in the government who have witnessed how the entire process is manipulated and hijacked at some level. Departments are supposed to requisition certain category of posts to be filled up, to the Nagaland Public Service Commission(NPSC). As with many other departments, vacancies are not made known and NPSC kept in the dark. According to PSAN, the Directorate of Treasuries and Accounts had kept two posts of Senior Treasury Officer(STO) and four posts of Junior Accounts Officer(JAO) in abeyance in 2016 from NPSC but later in June this year, the department had declared results of two(10)posts of Assistant Auditor without advertisements in the media. By not advertising and requisitioning the posts the department contravened P&AR order of 2011 which stipulated that posts with pay band of Rs.5200-20,200 with grade pay of Rs.2800 and above are to be recruited through NPSC. Fifty percent of vacancies are to be filled through departmental promotion and 50% through NPSC.PSAN had demanded that all the above posts filled through irregular means should be done through NPSC and 50% of posts of Assistant Auditors be requisitioned through NPSC. PSAN also disclosed that the Art and Culture department had not requisitioned the posts of Archivists, Assistant Archivists and Record Keeper since the past two to three years. For whatever reasons, of two vacant posts of Labour Inspectors under Labour Commissioner’s Office only one was requisitioned to NPSC. Again in the Directorate of Rural Development, PSAN pointed out that despite resultant vacancies due to death, resignation or superannuation contractual appointments were made by the department in violation of standing government order. Also ten posts of BRO/RDO/APO were manned by those on deputation instead of filling them through NPSC. Again, in the Social Welfare department, as many as 81 supervisors were appointed without sending requisition to NPSC. In order to pursue justice, PSAN submitted memoranda to the Governor and chief secretaries to immediately stop illegal backdoor appointments but despite the chief secretary’s official order to all departments to advertise and conduct selections only through NPSC for categories of posts, it did not cut much ice. PSAN has pointed out that those responsible for backdoor and irregular appointments were ministers, parliamentary secretaries, MLAs and bureaucrats; who seemed to have “reserved” the posts by keeping them hidden in files. This is the unwritten law in the state within the corrupt government system. There is no more legality, morality and sanctity in the state where the rule of law has long past ceased to exist.
DailyDevotion What’s Next To Do? If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. —John 13:17 Be determined to know more than others. If you yourself do not cut the lines that tie you to the dock, God will have to use a storm to sever them and to send you out to sea. Put everything in your life afloat upon God, going out to sea on the great swelling tide of His purpose, and your eyes will be opened. If you believe in Jesus, you are not to spend all your time in the calm waters just inside the harbor, full of joy, but always tied to the dock. You have to get out past the harbor into the great depths of God, and begin to know things for yourself— begin to have spiritual discernment. When you know that you should do something and you do it, immediately you know more. Examine where you have become sluggish, where you began losing interest spiritually, and you will find that it goes back to a point where you did not do something you knew you should do. You did not do it because there seemed to be no immediate call to do it. But now you have no insight or discernment, and at a time of crisis you are spiritually distracted instead of spiritually self-controlled. It is a dangerous thing to refuse to continue learning and knowing more. The counterfeit of obedience is a state of mind in which you create your own opportunities to sacrifice yourself, and your zeal and enthusiasm are mistaken for discernment. It is easier to sacrifice yourself than to fulfill your spiritual destiny, which is stated inRomans 12:1-2. It is much better to fulfill the purpose of God in your life by discerning His will than it is to perform great acts of self-sacrifice. “Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice…” (1 Samuel 15:22). Beware of paying attention or going back to what you once were, when God wants you to be something that you have never been. “If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know…” (John 7:17).

Rate of Recovery of Bad Loans of Public Sector Banks Falls Further in 2016-2017
T
he government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have taken multiple steps over the years to solve the bad loans problem of public sector banks. This has been without much success, with bad loans continuing to pile up. One area that seems to have constantly been ignored is the recovery bad loans. Bad loans are essentially loans on
which repayment the repayment from a borrower has been due for 90 days or more. Banks give out most loans against a collateral. Hence, to that extent the loans are secured and in case of a default from a borrower, the collateral can be sold and the loan amount can be recovered. Now, only if it was as simple as that. As the total amount of bad loans has burgeoned over
the years, the rate of recovery of bad loans has gone down dramatically. In Table 1, let’s first look at this parameter for the five biggest public sector banks in 2016-2017. As of March 31, 2016, these banks owned 52.5 per cent of the total assets owned by the public sector banks. Hence, they give a good indication of the overall scenario with public sector banks.

Nagaland’s future not for sale NNPGs
P
ost Framework Accord of Aug. 3, 2015, the people of Nagaland continue to be taken for a ride by NSCN (IM) through its propaganda ministry, promising imaginary political institution while the GOI, time and again made it clear that breaking up neighbouring Indian state to integrate all Naga inhabited area was out of question. Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) working Group reaffirm that the aspiration of all Nagas to live under one political roof remains and undying desire, yet the most essential component of the quest, the Integration of Naga areas, not on the anvil, profound sounding political terminologies cannot silence indigenous tribes of Nagaland. The NNPGs declare that civil societies and tribes of Nagaland have no hesitation whatsoever in saying to the GOI that if the question of integration issue be outside the purview of GOI-NSCN (IM) talks, separate acceptable solutions for Naga living in various Indian administered territories must be pursued without ambiguity. GOI must look into the grievances of Nagas living in other states and announce political steps for their progress and upliftment. The NNPGs working Group taking the confidence of mainland Nagas, must seek a permanent political solution. History cannot be altered, the genesis of Naga struggle has its roots in present Nagaland. It is the cradle. Our Naga brothers and sisters from Burma, Manipur and elsewhere joined the political struggle at the later stage and this has to be acknowledged. Today, Nagas everywhere must understand that there has been a natural evolution of the Indo-Naga political issue, fuelled by external forces and internal strife. At hand is the GOI making its position clear on the issue of Naga integration. The NSCN (IM) leadership, inexplicably continue to indulge in unrepentant theatrical politics in their nonexistent land called Nagalim. The Church, the tribes and the intellectuals, have pointed out the perennial flaw in the last twenty years of the political talks between GOI and IM. A single political group cannot decide the political future of all Nagas. The dangers of impractical political settlements cannot be overlooked. Consequences have been far reaching in the past. The GOI knows too well. The Working Group (WG) of Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) have met and sought opinions of much of the civil societies and tribes of Nagaland and recognizing the bare truth that the Framework Accord signed between the GOI and NSCN (IM) on Aug. 3, 2015 does not mention the word Manipur or any other state where Nagas inhabit, there is absolutely a clear, definite and unavoidable political roadmap of the table requiring political wisdom and decisiveness of the government of India (GOI) to understand the situation and address the political aspirations of the following: 1. Nagas of Nagaland, 2. Nagas
of Manipur, 3. Nagas of Assam and 4. Nagas of Arunachal Pradesh. Without the people’s consent and approval, political agreements remain mere papers. Of late the MIP of NSCN (IM) is churning out press releases inserting names of officials from proper Nagaland such as Akaho Assumi, Elian Z Lotha, Zeneituo Angami, Hukavi Yepthomi etc. as authors, worshipping the Framework Agreement. In all probability these officials are honest workers yet their neighbours and acquaintances would testify they are not equipped to put pen to paper to air their political views in the media. The question is, do NSCN (IM) statement gets more attention by inserting names of workers from Nagaland? Recently the names of seventy one officials from Nagaland appeared in the local dailies, pleading Nagas of Nagaland to accept Framework Agreement. Alas, it is not the number of Kilonsers and Tatars hailing from Nagaland. It is practical politics which requires indigenous Nagas of Nagaland to determine their political future basing on historical facts, present status and desire for the future. Clearly, Nagaland tribe national workers in the NSCN (IM) were utilized as a propaganda tool and it is not hard for readers to sense sinister ploy at work. Who is keeping an eye on Nagas based on topography? NSCN (IM) top decision-making body, overwhelmingly Nagas from Manipur, numbering hundreds, instead of playing childish politics of pasting workers from Nagaland and making brash and unruly noise in the media, should opt for honest and frank deliberation with the rest of Nagas. The threats and intimidations against members of civil societies, tribal hohos leaders of Nagaland are unacceptable and best avoided in the interest of all concerned. Tribes of Nagaland are swift and spontaneous against perpetrators of inhuman acts and imposition of unacceptable accords. A humane approach could heal much wound. NNPGS and Nagas of Nagaland are not traitors neither do they question or threaten the activities of United Naga Council (UNC), Naga Women’s Union Manipur (NWUM) and various Naga organisations of Manipur who are doing much to defend the interest of Nagas in Manipur. In the same manner Nagaland civil societies, tribes, Hohos will protect and defend their interest at all times and so questions of sabotaging NSCN (I-M)’s political dialogue does not arise. GOI must recognise the political aspiration of the people of Nagaland. The NNPGs have, in principle, agreed to explore and exercise all political options in the interest of mainland Nagas in particular and all Nagas in general, until appropriate time in future when emotional integration will ultimately lead to physical integration of Nagas, fulfilling the vision of the forefathers. Prime Minister, Narendra Modi calls on the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, in Astana, Kazakhstan on June 8.
ASTANA, JUN 8 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived here on Thursday to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit and held his first bilateral meeting with Kazakhistan President Nursultan Nazarbayev. On Friday, India and Pakistan are expected to be granted full membership of the SCO which also includes China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. India has been a observer to the SCO since 2005. Soon after his arrival
here, Modi called on Nazarbayev and discussed ways to expand bilateral ties. “Mr. Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of Kazakhstan met PM @narendramodi and discussed ways to expand bilateral ties,” the Prime Minister’s Office tweeted. On Friday, Modi is also expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Summit. However, there is no word yet on any such meeting between Modi and Pakistan Prime Minister
Nawaz Sharif, who is also here to attend the Summit. Modi on Wednesday said full membership of the SCO would help India in terms of connectivity and economic and counterterror cooperation with the Eurasian bloc. Stating that once India becomes a full member of the SCO, the bloc “will represent over 40 per cent of humanity and nearly 20 per cent of global GD”, Modi said in a predeparture statement: “ I look forward to deepening India’s association with the SCO which will help us in economic, connectivity and counter-terrorism cooperation, among other things.” He said India launched the process of full membership of the SCO in the Tashkent meeting last year. Modi said that India has long-standing relations with SCO members and he looked forward to “progressing them further through the SCO for mutual betterment and growth of our countries and our peopl”. “Together, we will harvest new opportunities
for beneficial engagement and redouble efforts to address common challenges that may come in the way of realising our full potential,” the Prime Minister said. According to G.V. Srinivas, Joint Secretary (Eurasia) in the Ministry of External Affairs, India has signed 38 documents of accession to become a member of the bloc. “There are broadly two legs of collaboration which are being pursued in the SCO platform,” Srinivas said. “One is trade, economy, connectivity, energy, transport, banking, that set of issues,” he said. “The second thing is, of course, the fight against terrorism.” Srinivas said that while the SCO Secretariat is in Beijing, there is a sub-body called Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) that has its office in Tashkent. After participating in the summit on Friday, Modi will also attend the World Exposition, which Kazakhstan is hosting this year, before returning to India.

come to the coastal state to relish its authentic seafood cuisine. “Tourists come here for sea and sand and to eat fish curry and rice. They visit Goa to taste the authentic Goan cuisine, which includes dishes made of fish,” Ajgaonkar said.
Rlys must revisit its objectives: Prabhu
NEW DELHI, JUN 8 (IANS): Stressing on the need to clearly define corporate goals, Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu on Thursday said that people in this sector, which is one of the most important strategic assets of the country, must constantly revisit its objectives and try to cater to the needs of all. “Railways is a large organisation and for every big organisation, it is necessary to revisit the basic issues, introspect them and bring a change to be competitive, versatile and efficient,” Prabhu said while speaking at the first HR Round Table Conference here. He said that people in the organisation have to take a “decision for change”, and that organisa-

tional change can happen only if the “shortcomings are realised”. Pointing out that Railways is a complex organisation, Prabhu said, “Railways has a commercial role, social role and welfare role and has to meet the expectations of people which are unique and con-
flicting.” “It also has to play a role of national transporter,” he added. He said: “Railways needs to clearly define the corporate goals, it should create the organised structure, then it should place the right people in the organisation.”
Prez race: Panel of 9 non-NDA parties to decide on consensus candidate NEW DELHI, JUN 8 (PTI): Leaders of at least nine non-NDA parties are part of the sub-group constituted to arrive at a consensus opposition candidate for the July 17 presidential poll. According to sources, the sub-group will be meeting next week to start deliberations among the opposition parties on the crucial poll. They said Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad among others are part of the sub-group. The group would comprise leaders of prominent parties like Left, TMC, Samajwadi Party and Ba-
hujan Samaj Party besides the JD(U), RJD, NCP and DMK as well as the main opposition party-the Congress. The sources said the possible names for the opposition candidate will only emerge after June 15 i.e. after a formal notification will be issued by the Election Commission on June 14. Congress president Sonia Gandhi is instrumental in forming this panel after she hosted a luncheon for the op-
position leaders on May 26 which was attended by leaders of 17 parties. “It was suggested at the May 26 luncheon that a sub-group of non-NDA parties be formed who could deliberate and bring consensus among the opposition parties on the matter,” said a senior leader. It was also stated at the luncheon that as per the tradition, the ruling party should take the lead in suggesting a consensual candidate for the President’s post.

Mumbai, Jun 8 (PTI): The rupee appreciated by another 12 paise to end at three-week high of 64.21 against the US currency today on sustained dollar selling by exporters and banks. The domestic unit has risen by 22 paise against the dollar since Wednesday amid heightened global volatility. Expectations of robust capital inflows into equities and debt largely supported the rupee gains. Speculative traders also continued to shortsell the dollar amidst global volatility, a forex dealer said. The rupee resumed sharply lower at 64.40 against last close of 64.33 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) Market on the back of initial dollar demand and lacklustre local equities.

on various doubts raised by LRD officers. Gowda also informed the visiting offices that there was no dearth of funds with the CBI to assist the farmers and therefore urged the officers to create awareness and sensitize the people on the scope of coffee farming. Meanwhile, Kikheto said the department has targeted to cover 4200 hectares of land with the 2400 coffee seeds provided to the state by the CBI. He said 2400 seeds could produce 60 lakh coffee saplings. However, the secretary said the cost of nurturing a single coffee sapling comes to Rs 12 per year which comes to Rs 720 crores approximately for nurturing 60 lakh saplings in a year. Director, LRD, Hoto Yeptho encouraged the officers to get proper knowledge during the visit and properly sensitize the farmers. The LRD team numbering around 30 also visited coffee station and were practically shown about various technicalities involved in coffee growing.

Mumbai, Jun 8 (PTI): Even as consumers will face a slightly higher tax rate in gold after the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is rolled out this July, the overall impact on the gold industry will be positive, World Gold Council today said. “On 1st July, India’s labyrinth of taxes will be replaced with a simple, nationwide GST. This is the biggest fiscal reform since India’s liberalisation in the early 1990s,” WGC said in a report here. “While gold consumers will face a slightly higher tax rate and the industry will go through a period of adjustment, we see the net impact on the gold industry as being positive,” it added.

Customers across the country have been complaining of severe shortage of currency at the banks and ATMs. Kanungo admitted that there could be shortage in some areas but said RBI is monitoring the situation on a regular basis and has made enough arrangements to replenish cash. “Yes, there could be shortage of currency in some pockets but whenever such things come to our notice, we respond immediately through various measures including interchest remittances. “I won’t agree to the view that there is cash shortage on a longer term basis or persistent basis at any place,” he said.

New Delhi, Jun 8 (PTI): The government on Thursday said foodgrains, flour, milk, vegetables and fruits will get cheaper by up to 5 percent once the Goods and Services Tax is rolled out. The government has exempted cereals, pulses, atta, maida and besan from the GST, which will be implemented from July 1. Milk, vegetables and fruits, puffed rice, salt, organic manure, animal feed, fire wood, raw silk, wool, jute and hand-operated agriculture equipment too will be zero-rated under the new indirect tax regime. “Due to no GST on these items, most of them are expected to become cheaper in the range of approximately 4-5 percent as compared to their existing prices,” a finance ministry statement said.

A state-government bus in flames after it was torched by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supporters in Darjeeling on Thursday. (PTI) hills. The hill town, which is at present full of tourists, had remained peaceful for several months as the GJMspearheaded agitation for a separate state of Gorkhaland had taken a backseat. Fresh violence erupted this afternoon with the Bimal Gurung-led party calling a protest march towards the Raj Bhavan, where the cabinet meeting was taking place. The GJM supporters tried to break the barricades put up by the police and hurled bricks at them. They
also damaged a number of police vehicles and set some of them on fire, police sources said, adding that some security personnel were injured. An Army spokesperson said, “A requisition from the state government was received. Two Army columns (each consisting of around 80 personnel) based in Darjeeling have moved out.” The GJM supporters were protesting among other issues alleged “imposition of Bengali language in the schools in the hills”.
This is the first time that the chief minister is holding a cabinet meeting in Darjeeling. Banerjee said the state government would set up a new secretariat here. The GJM supporters staged a dharna and raised slogans against the chief minister. Shopkeepers at some places, including the Mall, downed shutters while the traffic came to a halt, causing inconvenience to tourists. The GJM has accused the TMC government of trying to disrupt peace in Darjeeling by its “divide and rule policy” and called a 12hour shutdown in the hills tomorrow. “The TMC is systematically trying to use police and its goons to disrupt peace in the hills. Today the police resorted to unprovoked baton charge and firing of tear gas shells,” GJM general secretary Roshan Giri told PTI. “We condemn the state-sponsored violence. We have decided to call a 12-hour shutdown in the hills tomorrow. If the situation deteriorates further, then we may go for an indefinite shutdown,” he said. Giri said the GJM would never compromise on the
Saharanpur violence: Key accused arrested
LUCKNOW, JUN 8 (PTI): Bhim Army founder Chandrashekhar, the main accused in the Saharanpur caste violence, was nabbed from Himachal Pradesh today after having evaded arrest for nearly a month. As the Bhim Army got active on the social media after the arrest, all Internet facilities in Saharanpur were blocked for two days to prevent mischief mongering. Thirty-year-old Chandrashekhar, who was carrying a reward of Rs 12,000 on his head, was arrested nabbed from Dalhousie area of Himachal Pradesh, Additional DG (Meerut Zone) Anand Kumar told PTI over
phone. He will be brought to Saharanpur on a transit remand. IG (Crime) Hariram Sharma told mediapersons here that a total of 46 FIRs had been registered since inter-caste violence broke out in Saharanpur last month. As many as 206 arrests have been made so far, including that of Chandrashekhar, who has been named as accused in three FIRs, he said. Earlier, two members of the Bhim Army were arrested in Saharanpur for their alleged involvement in the Ramnagar caste violence on May 9 after one person was killed and several others were injured in a clash be-
tween Dalits and Thakurs at Shabbirpur village on May 5. About a dozen police vehicles were set ablaze and 12 policemen were injured in subsequent violence on May 9. The Uttar Pradesh Police had recently constituted a special investigation team (SIT) comprising 10 inspectors to probe 40 cases, registered between May 5 and May 23, in Saharanpur district which had seen bouts of inter-caste clashes last month. Chandrashekhar had recently held a rally in Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to protest against alleged violence against Dalits. He had then said that he would surrender if 37
“innocent” Dalits arrested in connection with the Saharanpur violence were released on bail. “I feel that the UP government has failed to address the issues of the Dalits. The chief minister has lost control over the police and the administration. There have been more cases of atrocities against the Dalits in the past two-and-a-half months as compared to last one year,” he had told PTI. The cycle of violence in Saharanpur began on May 5, when a man was killed, several injured and around 25 homes set ablaze in inter-caste clashes in Shabbirpur village.
fight for the identity of the people of the hills. Asked about the GJM’s agitation programme, the chief minister said, “They have the democratic right. Let them do it. They have no issue. Let there be competition for development.” On the GJM’s opposition to the alleged “imposition of Bengali language” in schools in the hills, she said that Bengali was not made a compulsory subject. “Rather, we gave recognition to Nepali language,” she said. “The people in the hill areas have been demanding development. Nothing had happened during the Left rule of 34 years, but things have changed after our government took over. “We have done so many development works here. I am proud to say that I am the first chief minister to visit the hills for more than 100 times,” she said. CPI(M) state secretary Surya Kanta Mishra said, “The condition in the hills is a matter of grave concern. The Darjeeling policy of our chief minister is just a replica of the Kashmir policy adopted by our prime minister.”
Man thrashed for carrying beef D H A N B A D (JHARKHAND), JUN 8 (PTI): A man was thrashed by villagers for allegedly carrying beef for an Iftar party in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district, police today said. Ainul Ansari, a resident of Murahdih village, was on his way home on a scooter when he was caught by a group of persons near Loharbarba village on the Dhanbad-Tundi road and beaten up for allegedly carrying beef. Dinesh Singh, the police officer investigating the incident, said it occurred around 8 am on Tuesday. The police reached the spot after getting information and rescued Ansari. The policemen searched the scooter at the insistence of the villagers and recovered the beef. Both the vehicle and the meat were taken to Barbadda police station, Singh said. Ansari was admitted to Patliputra Medical College Hospital (PMCH) where the doctor attending to him at the emergency ward said he had received minor injuries. He was released on Wednesday.
BJP protests outside Kejriwal’s house NEW DELHI, JUN 8 (PTI): Delhi BJP workers staged a protest outside Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence at the Civil Lines here today highlighting the problems of the people due to the “poor” power and water supply in the city. The protesters, led by Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari, were stopped by the police at a barricade and taken away. The police also had to use water canons to control the situation. The protesters were released subsequently. The BJP workers demanded a meeting with Kejriwal. “It is the Kejriwal
government’s callousness which is responsible for the power and water shortage in the city,” Tiwari told reporters. He alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government had not prepared a ‘summer action plan’ to ensure a proper supply of power and water in the hot summer months and the power infrastructure also had not been augmented, leading to frequent faults and outages. Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta claimed that the government did not buy enough electricity, which resulted in frequent power cuts across the city.
Ready for talks to solve Kashmir issue: Rajnath
Rajnath Singh MUMBAI, JUN 8 (PTI): Home Minister Rajnath Singh today said that he was “ready for talks with everyone” to resolve the Kashmir issue, and will not put any conditions for the purpose. “Those who are instigating the Kashmiri youth should look upon them as their own child,” Singh said while speaking to reporters in Mumbai about the Modi government’s achievements in three years. “In a healthy democracy, every solution can be achieved through dialogue. I have said many times that

I am ready for talks with everyone. We will not put any conditions and others should not put any conditions to us. “We are working on a permanent integrated solution which will unfold gradually. All details of such a solution can not be disclosed now. But we won’t become a hurdle in the future of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said. On the recent unrest in the Valley, he said, “The Valley has faced such type of situation earlier too. There are some attempts to foment unrest from the Pakistani side, but we have managed to control it. More terrorists have been killed in the Valley in the recent years (than earlier).” Except two incidents, there were no major terror attacks in Kashmir since May 2014, Singh said. Same was the case with Naxal activities, where “except one incident, we have been able to control such incidents”, the Union minister said. Kerala Assembly slams beef ban
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUN 8 (PTI): Kerala’s bitter political rivals--the ruling LDF and the opposition UDF-today closed ranks in the state assembly adopting a resolution asking the Centre to withdraw the cattle slaughter ban, calling it a ‘fascist’ move. The Assembly specially met for a one-day session to discuss the Centre’s controversial cattle ban notification that has come under attack in Kerala and several other states. The members of the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front(LDF) and the opposition Congressheaded United Democratic Front(UDF) condemned the ban as not only an “intrusion” into the rights of states but also an “infringement” on the rights of people on the choice of their food habits. The lone BJP MLA O Rajagopal opposed the resolution. Members of both the Fronts said the ban on sale of cattle for slaughter in animal markets was not only communal, but also essentially anti-working class and anti-farmer. It thus has to be withdrawn, they said. The members also alleged that the move was an attempt at corporatisation of the meat-trading sector, which was now an additional source of income for small and medium farmers. Moving the resolution, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan slammed the Centre, saying the ban was to implement the political agenda of the Sangh Parivar.
changes in the notification after getting suggestions from states. Kerala government was the first to protest against the Centre’s notification. It has also decided to convene a meeting of all chief ministers to discuss the issue.
MLAs have beef fry for breakfast
MLAs eat their beef-breakfast, before their special Kerala Assembly session on Thursday.
“The NDA government, that has failed to fulfil any of its promises, was raking up issues such as cattle slaughter to divide the people through communal polarisation for political gains,” he said. Vijayan also brought to the notice of the assembly the serious ‘adverse’ consequences the ban would have on various sectors including agriculture, dairy, leather industry and meat export trade. “The notification is impractical in Kerala where 95 per cent of the population is non-vegetarian. It is clearly an intrusion into the citizens’ choice of food,” he said. On the impact on state’s meat trade, Vijayan told the Assembly that 2.5 lakh tonnes of meat worth Rs 6,552 crore was sold in Kerala annually. Vijayan also mentioned about the farmers unrest in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra and said the community was already in crisis and the new rules would further add to their woes. The chief minister said
the state government would implead in the connected case pending in the Supreme Court. Describing the notification as another “surgical strike” by the Modi government “like the note ban”, opposition leader in assembly Ramesh Chennithala said this was “a sign of arrival of fascism” in the country. “Modi has transformed himself into ‘abhinava Hitler’ (neo Hitler),” he alleged. Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan said there seems to be an “indirect interest” behind the notification. CPI(M) veteran and former Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, KC-M leader K M Mani were among those who spoke on the occasion. Rajagopal said the coming together of LDF and UDF in the assembly was a sign of a “grand alliance” forming at the national level to take on the BJP. He said the House has been “misused” for political purposes as the Centre has already made it clear that it was ready to make
Kerala legislators today beefed up their protest against the Centre’s ban on cow slaughter with plates of beef fry at the canteen of the state assembly, which met today to discuss the Modi government’s new notification. Many MLAs had a power breakfast with the beef dish, served at the two units of the Indian Coffee House on the assembly premises and in the staff canteen, assembly sources said. “Beef was served in the canteen. It is a regular item on the menu and there was no unusual increase in the volume either,” a source said, adding that chicken and beef are served almost every day in the canteens. Sources at the coffee house that runs the assembly canteen said 28 plates of beef fry, prepared with four kilos of beef, were prepared today along with chicken curry. Past noon, the dish had been demolished by the eager MLAs. “Every day beef is served here. But, taking into consideration the importance of the day, why don’t you have beef fry today,” a server at the coffee house asked media persons.

Akhilesh slams Modi, Yogi Adityanath L U C K N OW, J U N 8 (IANS): Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) governments at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh, accusing them of lying to the people. Addressing a gathering of supporters and party workers from the youth wing at the party office here, the Samajwadi Party (SP) chief said that all development work in Uttar Pradesh had come to a grinding halt under the watch of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and added that even under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the economy was in doldrums. “The state government has ensured that the administrative system in the state has collapsed and graft is on the upswing,” he added. Accusing the BJP of turning its back on the youth, Yadav said the union government was snatching jobs while it promised to create two crore jobs in a year. He also accused the BJP of trying to divert the attention of the people from real issues by stoking communal and casteist fires. “BJP talks of farmers and then it opens fire on farmers in MP, farmers are committing suicide and the Prime Minister is talking of doubling their income in the next five years,” the 44-year-old leader said.
Rain arrests soaring mercury in N India

NEW DELHI, JUN 8 (PTI): A fresh spell of rain plateaued the upward trend of the mercury in the northern states even as the searing heat led to the death of a person in Odisha. Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Bihar which had been staggering under the blazing sun got some much-needed relief as rains hit the region. The weatherman has predicted heavy rain in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka, and thunderstorm with gusty winds in Jharkhand and Bihar. Overcast skies and light rainfall in the national capital guarded it against the unremitting heat. The city recorded a high of 34.5 degrees Celsius and a low of 28.8 degrees Celsius. The number of casualties due to sunstroke in
Odisha rose to 17 as one more heat-related death was reported from Dhenkanal district though the temperature descended following more rains. This summer, four persons each have died due to heat stroke in Sambalpur and Angul, three each in Bargarh and Sundargarh and one each in Balangir, Bhadrak and Dhenkanal. The mercury remained below the 40-degree Celsius mark across the state. As per the IMD forecast, monsoon is likely to hit the state around the end of the week. Light showers in Haryana and Punjab brought the maximum temperature down. Chandigarh gauged 4.8 mm of rainfall and recorded the maximum temperature at 33 degrees Celsius, Ambala registered a high of 32.7 degrees Celsius and Hisar’s maximum
settled at 31.5 degrees Celsius. Amritsar got rain overnight and recorded a high of 35.1 degrees Celsius. Ludhiana and Patiala recorded their maximum temperatures at 32.7 and 33.1 degrees Celsius respectively. A wet Thursday brought respite to the people in Uttar Pradesh with the mercury dropping in most parts of the state. The maximum temperature fell in Kanpur, Moradabad and was markedly below normal in Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Faizabad, Kanpur, Bareilly, Lucknow Moradabad, Agra and Meerut. Banda was the hottest place in the state at 42.2 degrees Celsius and Najibabad the coolest at 20.5 degrees Celsius. Aligarh received 13.8 mms of precipitation and Meerut 5.5 mm. However, rains fed the humid weather in Bihar even as the MeT office predicted more precipitation or thunderstorm in the state tomorrow. A MeT department report from Mumbai said the southwest south-west monsoon is expected to reach the city by the end of the week. The city and surrounding areas received spells of pre-monsoon showers last evening. The IMD had on Tuesday upgraded its monsoon forecast for the country to 98 per cent of ‘Long Period Average’ from 96 per cent earlier.

Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May leaves with her husband Philip after voting in the general election at polling station in Maidenhead, England June 8, 2017
LO N D O N, J U N 8 (AGENCIES): Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May is on course to increase her majority in the House of Commons with a final General Election 2017 poll giving the Tories a lead of eight points over Labour as the nation heads to the ballot box. The Conser vatives had as much as a 24 point lead when the snap election was called by the Prime Minister. But Ipsos MORI’s final 2017 election survey for the Evening Standard,
which was undertaken on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, puts the Conservatives on 44 per cent and Labour on 36. Meanwhile, a YouGov poll that was published on Wednesday evening put the Tories on 42 per cent and Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party on 35, a lead of seven points. If those results are replicated at the polls today the Conservatives would end up with an increased majority of about 50 seats, up on the 17 the party enjoyed previously.
The YouGov survey for The Times which was undertaken between June 5-7 put the Liberal Democrats on 10 per cent and Ukip on five per cent. The YouGov poll falls somewhere in the middle of a range of other surveys which all predict a Conservative win but by different margins. The final Survation poll had the Tories and Labour almost neck and neck on 41 per cent and 40 per cent respectively. An ICM poll for The Guardian had May’s party on 46 per cent with Labour on 34 per cent. The Lib Dems were on seven per cent, the SNP on five per cent and Ukip on five per cent while the Green Party was on two per cent. A ComRes poll for The Independent gave the Tories a 10-point lead over Labour, 44 per cent to 34 per cent. All of the polls took place before polling day. May called the snap poll on April 18 and after a fierce campaign which was disrupted by terror attacks
in Manchester and London she will find out if voters have been won over by her vision for post-Brexit Britain. Meanwhile, Corbyn will be hoping that his leftwing manifesto and large rallies have been enough to secure him the keys to Downing Street. Polling sta tions opened at 7am and they will close at 10pm with the first result, likely to be Houghton and Sunderland South which has been quickest at the last five elections, expected to declare just one hour later at 11pm. There should then be a steady trickle of results until about 2am when declarations should start to come in thick and fast from across the UK. The main wave of results is expected to start at about 3am with the overall picture likely to be clear by about 5am. The leader of the winning party traditionally waits for the leader of the losing party to concede defeat before claiming victory.
MAIDUGURI (NIGERIA), JUN 8 (AFP): Eleven people were killed when Boko Haram gunmen and suicide bombers launched a rare combined attack inside the strategic northeast Nigerian city of Maiduguri, police said today. Borno state police commissioner Damian Chukwu said one civilian was killed as locals in the Jiddari Polo area of the city fled, while 10 were killed nearby in three separate suicide blasts. Last night’s attacks took place on the eve of a visit by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, deputising for unwell President Muhammadu Buhari, to launch a major humanitarian aid programme. The raid came barely a month after a senior Boko Haram commander threatened to attack the city after he was released from government custody in exchange for 82 kidnapped schoolgirls. Outlying districts of Maiduguri, including the university campus and camps for people displaced by the eight-year insurgency, have been hit repeatedly by Boko Haram suicide bombers.

Russian, Chinese leaders meet, hail their close ties
MOSCOW, JUN 8 (AGENCIES): Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping have hailed close ties between the two nations during their meeting on the sidelines of a summit of an alliance dominated by Moscow and Beijing. The two leaders are attending the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, or SCO, which also includes India, Pakistan and several ex-Soviet Central Asian nations. Welcoming Xi at the start of Thursday’s talks in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana, Putin said the Chinese leader’s visit to Russia later this year would be a “major event.” Xi in turn hailed the “strategic” China-Russia ties, saying that “our cooperation and mutual support have a great global significance.” The SCO was founded in Shanghai in 1996 as a counterweight to Western alliances. India and Pakistan joined in 2015.
Tehran attackers have been to IS bastions: Iran
TEHRAN, JUN 8 (AFP): Iran said today that the five Iranians who killed 17 people in twin attacks in Tehran were Islamic State group members who had been to its strongholds in Iraq and Syria. The attacks yesterday at Tehran’s parliament complex and the shrine of revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini wounded more than 50 people and were the first claimed by IS in Iran. “The five known terrorists... after joining the Daesh (IS) terrorist group, left the country and participated in crimes carried out by this terrorist group in Mosul and Raqa,” the ministry said in a statement. It suggested there were only five attackers rather than the six originally reported. The ministry released their photographs and first names, and said they were part of a network that entered Iran in July-August 2016 under the leadership of “high-ranking Daesh commander” Abu Aisha intend-
ing to carry out “terrorist operations in religious cities”. Abu Aisha was killed and the network forced to flee the country, the statement said. It was not clear when the five men returned to Iran ahead of Wednesday’s attacks. Iran denounced Donald Trump’s reaction to the attacks as “repugnant” after the US president said the nation was reaping what it sowed. Trump said the US would “grieve and pray” for the victims, but added: “We underscore that states that sponsor terrorism risk falling victim to the evil they promote.” That was condemned by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who tweeted: “Repugnant WH (White House) statement... as Iranians counter terror backed by US clients.” The attackers were armed with rifles and pistols and at least two blew themselves up with suicide vests, Iranian media reported.
on Saturday that killed eight people and wounded several. Five remain in custody, the police said. A video in the British media showed armed policemen encountering the terrorists, who drove into pedestrians on London Bridge and then stabbed people in the nearby Borough Market. The CCTV footage shows the three terrorists - Pakistan-born Khurram Shazad Butt, Moroccan-origin Rachid Redouane and Moroccon-Italian Yousef Zaghba - cornering a pedes-
trian and about to stab him before charging at armed police officers. The attackers are then shot dead. The video emerged as families of the London Bridge attackers expressed disgust over the massacre and distanced themselves from the extremists, saying the atrocity left them shocked. Charisse O’Leary, who married Redoaune in Dublin in 2012, said she has “shed many tears for the people caught up in this horrific incident”. “I am deeply shocked, saddened

Former FBI director James Comey listens to the committee chairman at the beginning of the Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Capitol Hill, Thursday, June 8, 2017, in Washington. (AP/PTI)
WASHINGTON, JUN 8 (AGENCIES): Testifying under oath in a Senate hearing watched worldwide, former FBI Director James Comey accused the Trump administration Thursday of defaming him and the FBI in the aftermath of his abrupt firing by President Donald Trump. “Those were lies, plain and simple,” Comey said of the administration’s claims that the FBI was poorly led and in disarray under his leadership, and that agents had lost confidence in him. “The administration chose to defame me and more importantly the FBI,” he said. He also said he was “confused and increasingly concerned” by Trump’s shifting explanations for firing him, including Trump’s remark that he had had Russia on his mind in dismissing Comey four years into a 10-year term. “He had repeatedly told me I was doing a great job and he hoped I would stay,” Comey said. “So it confused me when I saw on television the president told me that he actually fired me because of the Russia investigation.” And Comey told senators why he had decided he must document every meeting he had with Trump,

with a written record. “I was honestly concerned that he might lie about the nature of our meeting, so I thought it really important to document,” Comey said. “I knew there might come a day when I might need a record of what happened not only to defend myself but to protect the FBI.” Comey made his comments as the packed hearing got underway, bringing Washington and parts of the country to a halt as all eyes were glued on the hearing room. He immediately dove into the heart of the fraught political controversy around his firing as he elaborated on written testimony delivered Wednesday. In that testimony he had already disclosed that Trump demanded his “loyalty” and directly pushed him to “lift the cloud” of investigation by declaring publicly the president was not the target of the probe into his campaign’s Russia ties. Comey also testified in his written testimony that Trump, in a strange private encounter near the grandfather clock in the Oval Office, pushed him to end his investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.
Trump was expected to dispute Comey’s claims that he demanded loyalty and asked the FBI director to drop an investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, according to a person close to the president’s legal team who demanded anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss legal strategy. The Republican National Committee worked aggressively to discredit Comey ahead of the hearing and as it unfolded. Comey listened, hands clasped on his lap, as committee Chairman Richard Burr of North Carolina delivered his opening statement. “Today,” Burr told Comey, “is your opportunity to set the record straight.” Burr is leading the committee’s investigation into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election and ties with Trump’s own campaign team. “We will establish the facts separate from rampant speculation and lay them out for the American people to make their own judgement,” Burr said. “Only then will we be able to move forward and put this issue to rest.”

n 1997, Arundhati Roy took the literary world by storm with The God of Small Things. The novel won the Booker Prize and sold millions of copies, but Roy didn’t publish another sentence of fiction for 20 years. “Unless fiction becomes disobedient, it will become irrelevant,” Roy told Books and Arts. The above might be an aesthetic manifesto, but it’s also the rule by which Roy lives her life. With nonfiction titles ranging from The Algebra
of Infinite Justice (2002) to Capitalism: A Ghost Story (2014) Roy has been busy employing her hypodermic intellect and elastic prose to take on all manner of social injustice. She’s been charged with sedition and faced obscenity trials. All the while, devotees of The God of Small Things have been waiting with baited breath. Roy, whose arrival on the world stage was sudden and jarring, said the expectations put on her to be a bestseller-writing machine turned her off the craft. “To put something as profound, as wonderful as a novel onto a conveyer belt was just not something I was prepared to do,” she said. But sometimes a group of characters walks into your head and refuses to be ignored. “They [the characters] just ganged up on me and they were like ‘do it!’” A thousand things at once The result of Roy’s
two-decade break is The Ministry of Utmost Happiness — over 400 pages of exuberant polyphony. The novel begins with the story of Anjum, a hijra: someone who identifies as neither fully male nor female. Anjum’s story is told in the sensuous, lilting tone that made Roy famous in the 90s. But from there the novel breaks out in all kinds of directions, taking in the lives of a number of outcast and eccentric people. Stylistically too, the book contains multitudes, from letters to abstract ruminations to sections approaching the political thriller genre. Roy said it was the only ways she could accurately convey the sensation of living now. “You’re getting strange text messages on your phone, there’s TV going, there’s all kinds of things going on. “It’s [life] all fractured, there’s never one feeling, it’s

to the film. I myself loved the film, and not because it’s made by my daughter.” Uncannily, Aparna was heard but not seen in her own directorial debut. She had dubbed for Debashree Roy in “36 Chowringhee Lane”. And now Aparna is just a voice in her daughter’s directorial debut. T h o u g h Ko n k o n a claims her main source of inspiration is Peter Weir’s 1975 Australian film “Picnic At Hanging Rock” for the eerie and intangible feeling of dread in “A Death In The Gunj”, Konkona’s mother’s influence on her first film is quite prominent. Not many have noticed the uncanny resemblance in mood between Konkona’s movie and her mother’s “36 Chowringhee Lane”. In both the films, the protagonists are lonely, persecuted, desolate and exploited individuals. If Konkona’s Shutu lived to become old, he would probably lead a reclusive lonely life like Violet Stoneheim (Jennifer Kapoor) of “36 Chowringhee Lane”.
ome of the best years for Limited Series / TV Movies are the ones where there is a pretty dynamic range of genres spread across this. Luckily, we did have this over the past year with serious drama, great mystery, and a little bit of comedy thrown in there, as well. Within these projects were of course great performances, far more than one can place within a single Emmy category. If you were to tell us that we’d have a category this year with Robert De Niro and Geoffrey Rush as potential nominees, you’d almost assume that they were locks. Maybe that is the case with the actual awards, but neither party made our personal CarterMatt ballot for the year.

abandons Roy’s sensitive, altruistic and humane view of the world. “Some people assume that the name of the novel, The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, is satirical, and that it’s really about terribly sad things,” Roy said. “But it’s not satirical, because I do believe that the most radical thing the human race can do is to redefine the recipe for happiness that’s been handed down to us.”

S onkona Sen Sharma’s “A Death In The Gunj” is about secrets and whispers that hover over our lives and lies that are dormant in the family history. And one family secret that Konkona and her distinguished mother filmmaker Aparna Sen share is that the latter has made a quiet non-visible guest appearance in her daughter’s directorial debut. Aparna Sen is in Konkona’s much-lauded “A Death In The Gunj”. Though we can’t see her in the film, only hear her. Aparna plays the film’s protagonist Shutu’s (Vikrant Massey) mother. We never see the lady. We only hear her on the phone on a distressed long-distance call with her son and we also hear her voice when Tanuja (playing Vikrant’s aunt) reads out a worried and anxious letter from Shutu’s mother. Aparna laughs when caught out being a part of her daughter’s film. “Of course that’s my voice for Shutu’s mother. But there is so much more
a thousand things at once.” Incendiary borders The conceit of fracturing might be the novel’s central theme: its characters are split by social and personal strata, whether it be caste, gender or religion. “All the characters in this book are people who have some kind of incendiary border running through them,” Roy said. “She’s a character like the others, very unique, very individual.” Roy insists this hybridity goes to the very heart of contemporary Indian culture. “There’s all these languages that we live with all the time in India, nothing happens in one language,” she said. “How do you find a way of absorbing those cadences and the wisdom of people who are thinking and fighting and praying in different languages? “You can’t do it in some obedient way.” Despite its formal experimentation and massive scope, the novel never really

What you wear is true culture and more often than not a piece of art,” Sood added. The online project includes collections from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) and varied weaves from across India, from Gharchola to Patola to Temple to Ikat sarees, as it traces the story and

negotiations over the new contract have dragged on for several months, raising fears than he could be tempted away by a bigmoney offer from another club, reports Xinhua news agency. The new contract will not be signed until the start of July, however, for accounting reasons which would place the cost of the deal in the accounts of the 2017-18 season, rather than in the campaign which recently finished. The 2016-17 season saw Messi end as the top scorer in Spain with 37 goals in the La Liga, five in the Kings Cup and 11 in the Champions League, despite Barcelona only reaching the quarter-final stage of the competition.
