DIMAPUR, JUN 7 (NPN): Nagaland on Wednesday recorded one more fresh case of Covid -19 pushing the total caseload to 36029.

DIMAPUR, JUN 7 (NPN): Jorhat district administration has imposed a night curfew along a five-kilometre belt on the Assam side of the Assam-Nagaland border with immediate effect. In an order, district magistrate Jorhat Pulak Mahanta stated that the order would remain in force until further orders.

The district administration claimed that some extremist organizations were trying to sneak into the state from the Nagaland border to create trouble in Jorhat district. Citing a report from the source, DM said that some report ULFA(I) recently enrolled new volunteers in their group and they may use the Assam Nagaland border areas for transporting new volunteers and other purposes.

DIMAPUR, JUN 7 (NPN): Angami Public Organisation (APO) and Kohima Village Council (KVC) have jointly appealed to the leaders of the Naga Club (NC) and Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) to allow “any willing and voluntary third party” to mediate for restoring normalcy and bring about a meaningful reconciliation outside of the legal court at the earliest.

In a joint appeal, APO president Razouvotuo Chatsu and KVC chairman Helievi Solo said they were “deeply conscious of the likely long-term consequences” if the conflicts remained (Read more on p-4) unresolved and inevitably

become subjected to provocations and counter provocations. APO and KVC have, therefore, appealed to both the parties to “cease issuing press statements, say or do anything against each other which may only aggravate the situation.”

Further, they requested the Naga Club not to take up any activity at the site “if the current volatile public sentiments for and against.”

APO and KVC also requested the NSF to “withdraw FIR soonest possible” as a good gesture to find an amicable solution acceptable and honourable to both the parties.

NFHRCC appeals state govt to implement assembly resolution

DIMAPUR, JUN 7 (NPN): Nagaland Foothills Road Coordination Committee (NFHRCC) has reiterated its appeal to the state government particularly the state chief minister Neiphiu Rio and deputy chief ministers—Y Patton and TR Zelaing—to put into action the Nagaland Assembly Resolution adopted on September 22, 2022 by taking up the foothills project under NEC during the Financial Year 2023-2024 in the interest of the Naga public at large.

In a press release, public prosecutor Phek, Samuel Ritse, informed that the accused identified as Vebuto Khesoh was sentenced under section 376A(2)(0 IPC read with section 4 POCSO Act, 2012.

The Judge Special Court POCSO Phek, Neiko Akami, pronounced the judgment and passed the conviction order on June 7, 2023 upon hearing the accused on quantum of sentence. The Court found that accused on January 5, 2017 committed penetrative sexual assault to a minor girl, wherein the accused after luring the minor victim, took her to jungle, which was one km away from her residence, and committed penetrative assault upon the victim. The prosecution was able to prove guilt of the accused person beyond all reasonable doubt.

DIMAPUR, JUN 7 (NPN): State chief minister Neiphiu Rio has termed as “disturbing” the attack on two Naga youths at Chanakyapuri area in Ahmedabad, Gujarat by some 10 men “for selling non-vegetarian and northeastern food” on Sunday night. Taking to twitter, the chief minister said that “The assault on two Nagas for selling non-vegetarian and northeastern food is disturbing.” Calling for respecting each other’s cultural identity and food choices, Rio said “Let us live up to our ideal of unity in diversity.”

Minister tourism & higher education, Temjen Imna Along, also expressed pain over the “recent hate crime against two men from Nagaland”.

Along, who is also the president of BJP Nagaland state unit, said it was disheartening to see “our brothers from the northeastern region” being targeted and discriminated against for their cultural identity and food choices. “Let us spread love and compassion, not hate and hostility,” Along added.

According to Times of India report, Rovimezo Kehie (33), who is from Kohima, in his FIR said that he and his friend, Mapuyanger Jamir, work at a eatery called One Stop Northeast. As per FIR, those men threatened the duo and asked why were they selling northeastern food. Kehie said some of the men hit him and Jamir with baseball bats.

commerce, Hekani Jakhalu, congratulated WSTH on attaining 25 years. She lauded the “visionary” Western Sümi founders/pioneers for their foresight and appreciated their invaluable contributions for the Sümi community to progress.

While appreciating the

indispensable involvement of Sümi women in building the Western Sümi community, Hekani said their crucial role was evident in the way Sümis have progressed and prospered in this part of the state.

Underscoring the importance of representation, Hekani said that more Naga women needed to come out and lead from the forefront.

Speaking on the importance of unity and oneness among the Nagas, Hekani lamented the disunity among the Nagas and called for harbouring the “spirit of brotherhood” for the Naga society to progress. “If we do not change our mindset and unify, then the younger Naga generation will not progress and prosper,” she said.

Stating that women could play a vital role in unifying the Nagas, the advisor asked them to exhibit patience, which according to her was God’s “special power” to women, and continue their endeavour to maintain peace and harmony among the Nagas. The special guest

also announced “WSTH Silver Jubilee Scholarship” for Western Sümi women, and informed that the details would be worked out with WSTH. The “Mega Cultural Event” was followed by “Silver Jubilee Service” on the theme, “Kuqhakulu Chikamujo Ani” (Nurturing Unity) with retired director of higher education, Kuholi Chishi as the theme speaker.

World Food Safety Day observed in Kohima

KOHIMA, JUNE 7(NPN): Food Safety and Standard Authority, department of Health and Family Welfare observed the 5th World Food Safety Day on June 7, under the theme “Food standard Save Lives” at Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) School, Lerie, Kohima.

Commissioner of Food Safety, commissioner and secretary, H&FW, Y.Kikheto Sema graced the occasion as special guest.

In his speech, Kikheto said in 2018, the UN approved the annual celebration of World Food Safety Day and the first celebration took place on June 19, 2019.

that the Village Gate was constructed at the entrance of the village funded under Entry Point Activity by the Nagaland Forest Management Project assisted by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Speaking at the inauguration programme, the

minister lauded the village community for judiciously utilizing the fund to construct the village gate and encouraged the village community to work together with the department for development. Maintaining that Tseminyu district was the gateway for develop-

ment of other districts, owing to its strategic location, the minister urged the village community to continue their good work and set an example to others. In his short speech, Temjenyabang, Project Director (A, F & P), NFMP lauded the efforts of the village community particularly the Joint Forest Management Committee for executing various works under NFMP. Village Council chairman, Daniel Tep, in his welcome note, highlighted about the village gate, which was a much-felt need of the village.

Therefore, she urged the people of Phom community and Nagas in general to learn the division of labor from cultivating, processing and market linkage. This can happen only when Nagas learn to work as a team and also learn scientific method of farming, she added.

Dakshata training for Operation Salvage celebrates medical personnel in Phek DIMAPUR: Dakshata training for medical officers and nurses of Phek district commenced on June 7 at CMO conference hall, Phek. The training will continue till June 9.

A press release by NHM Phek district media officer Kutolu Nakro informed that at the training DPO RCH/UIP Dr.Pewezo Khalo delivered welcome address and highlighted the aims of the training to the participants.

Dakshata, which means “adroitness” or “Dexterity” is a strategy to strengthen and provide quality care services during and after childbirth through skilled health care providers.

The main aim of the training was to train the health care workers to provide quality service to the mother and child during delivery with an objective to reduce maternal and child mortality during childbirth in all the Health Units.

At the training topics on “Care of mother and newborn immediately after birth, how to handle prolonged and obstructed labour, ensuring Quality in Labour room etc” will be deliberated.

21st foundation day

Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, JUN 7 (NPN): Operation Salvage, a rehabilitation centre supported by NSCN (I-M), celebrated its 21st Foundation Day at its premises at Heningkunglwa, Peren, on Wednesday.

Addressing the gathering as chief guest, member of collective leadership of NSCN/ GPRN VS Atem shared his testimony and encouraged all inmates not to give up or lose hope and face the challenges, noting that God was perhaps preparing them for bigger roles.

With many individuals successfully rehabilitated at the centre, Atem exuded confidence that more people would recover and be rehabilitated in the day to come.

Atem thanked all staff at the centre for their hard work, dedication and sacrifice on trying to make the lives of people better. He also assured the support of the NSCN (I-M) leadership towards the Centre (Operation Salvage).

Delivering a brief report on Operation Salvage administrator David Perie stated that the centre had around 115 inmates.

He also informed the gathering that the centre was established in June 2023 particularly for rehabilitation of drug and substance abuse and more so as per the request of parents and others who have been affected

by it. The centre, supported by NSCN (I-M), has been assisted in numerous ways and means by various Church organizations.

Speaking on the social stigma, he maintained that the greatest challenge in the fight against addiction was denial that came due to social stigma. He urged everyone to help remove the stigma so that addicts could open up easily, join the centre and part ways from addictions.

Short speeches of encouragement were delivered by members from Nagaland Baptist Church Council, Naga People’s Movement for Human Rights, Eastern Naga People’s Organisation and Zeliangrong Mipui Organisation. Former inmates of the centre also shared short messages on how they were able to get through with their alcohol addiction.

by Chaplain, Peihaudipetpe Whiso, whilst prayer for the staff and centre was offered by DSBC senior pastor S Vitoshe Swu. The main objective of signing the MoU was to collaboratively work in creating a learning platform and environment for learners especially in the field of mental health, counselling and also to jointly organise skill

development workshops and programmes for students and teachers on mental health, counselling and other related areas.

The MoU would also focus on research and development activities, exchange of both human and non-human resources and to enhance entrepreneurial mindset among students and assist them in establishing relevant start-ups.

Advisor YRS S. Keoshu inducted as 13th president of NSBSG

KO H I M A , J U N 7 (NPN): Three books compiled by State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) was launched by advisor of School Education & SCERT, Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome at a programme held at the conference hall of SCERT, here on Wednesday.

The books were Indigenous Toys & Games of Nagaland, Nagaland ECCE Curriculum Handbook-Theoretical Principles & Thematic Framework (Part A) and Nagaland ECCE Curriculum Handbook - Theme - based on learning experiences - Teachers manual (Part B).

In his address, Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, said Naga society trying to adapt with change in a system where the focus was on the individuality although Nagas had primarily been a society where community was paramount and individual was secondary.

He obser ved that such a major shift in the thinking process and practice was a huge stress for a young society like the Nagas.

He observed that the sudden change from the old educational system to new putting emphasis on emotional and social literacy was above and beyond the simple 3 Rs (Reading, Writing, Arithmetic).

Yhome said the change seemed too rapid for a society where the first person to graduate was not even 100 years ago in 1924.

However, he said the adaptability nature present in the Nagas was also the strength of the people which was liberating.

“Our adaptability is what also makes us vulnerable but it also what makes us free people,” Yhome said.

He obser ved that there were also some conflicts while trying to adapt to government laws and policies, however, he hoped that SCERT would come up with innovative ways to cater to such issues and bring in solutions.

Lauding the handbook, Yhome said, “We have come out with not just a vision document but also with a research policy specifically on ECCE which would go a long way in moulding the children.”

While appreciating the efforts put into the work, Yhome congratulated the team for bringing out the documents and also hoped that the team would continue to grow.

He lauded the collaborating partners Azim Premji University saying the trend of education was getting better integrated into the educational system especially through such innovative institutions.

Keoshu Yimkhiung has been inducted as the 13th president of Nagaland State Bharat Scouts and Guides (NSBSG) at the induction ceremony held at NSBSG State Headquarters Bayavu Hill Kohima on Wednesday. Along with Keoshu, two others officials have also been inducted and five took reaffirmation.

GUWAHATI, JUN 7 (PTI): A goods train derailed in Assam’s Kamrup district on Wednesday but no injuries were reported, a railway official said. The incident took place near Boko when 20 wagons of the coal-laden train jumped the tracks at Singra near Boko, he said.

The derailed wagons were at the centre of the train which had a total of 60 wagons, the official said.

The train was bringing coal to Tetelia in Kamrup Metropolitan district from

Asansol in West Bengal.

The cause of the derailment was yet to be ascertained and senior railway and police officials were camping at the spot, he said.

Four passenger trains in the Rangia-Lumding section were cancelled but express trains were not affected as rail traffic in the section was lean and confined mostly to goods trains, the official said. Restoration work has begun and the plying of trains is expected to resume soon, the official added.

NEW DELHI, JUNE 7 (IANS): A group of women belonging to Manipur’s Kuki tribal community staged a protest outside the residence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Wednesday against the ethnic violence in the northeastern state that has so far killed more than 100 people.

The Union Minister had recently visited Manipur from May 29 to June 1.

According to information, the women gathered outside Shah’s residence at around 9 a.m.

However, all the protesters were instructed to leave by the Delhi Police, as staging any kind of protest is not allowed in the area.

A Delhi Police official said that upon receiving information about the protest, they dispatched a team to pacify the protesters. The police initially informed the protesters that assembling

IMPHAL, JUN 7: Security forces in Manipur recovered 57 arms, 318 ammunition and five bombs in the last 24 hours even as combing operations to recover weapons and ammunition snatched from the state police and security forces commenced on Wednesday, official sources said.

Including the latest recovery, a total of 868 arms and 11,518 ammunition have been recovered till date, said Kuldiep Singh, security advisor to the Manipur government, in a statement.

The arms and ammunition were recovered from Porompat police station of Imphal East and Sugnu police station of Kakching district, he added.

Official sources said that security forces in the

One such operation was by a combined force of state police, Assam Rifles and CRPF at Khoken vil-

lage of Kangpoki and its adjacent Sangaithel village of Imphal West district today morning.

The security forces raided the houses in these villages. There were no reports of recovery of arms and ammunition and also picking up any suspect in the operation.

The combing operations were conducted under the aegis of the Headquarters 3 Corp and the

executive magistrates were detailed at the places on the request from the Army side. The sources said that the combing operations will be conducted across the sensitive areas in the hills and valley to recover illegal arms and ammunition in the possessions of the villagers as well as snatched from the police and state security forces.

According to the sources, around 2000 weapons and over five lakh ammunition were looted by unruly mobs from armouries and police stations and outposts both in hills and valley district since violence broke out in the state on May 3 evening.

On the other hand, Manipur chief secretary Dr Vineet Joshi, in a statement on Wednesday, said that the combing operations will also be conducted in five hill districts of

Churachandpur, Pherzawl, Tengnoupal, Chandel and Kamjong.

The chief secretary was reacting to reports widely circulated in social media that combing operations will be conducted only in the valley districts.

This was not correct, he said, adding that executive magistrates were deputed based on a request received from the Army authorities in Manipur regarding requirement of executive magistrates in the five valley districts and Kangpokpi for combing operations.

The physical presence of the executive magistrates was required in the places where AFSPA has been lifted and the same has been lifted from many police stations falling in these six districts, he clarified.

“The Army request-

ed executive magistrates only for these districts as executive magistrate are not required for conduct of combing operations in other districts where AFSPA is in force,” the chief secretary said.

Further, to dispel misunderstanding among the public, the deputy commissioners of Churachandpur, Pherzawl, Tengnoupal, Chandel and Kamjong districts have also been advised to detail executive magistrates for the operations by security formations even though AFSPA is in force in these districts, the statement added.

On the other hand, the security advisor stated that curfew relaxation has been made for 12 hours in five valley districts and 10 hours and eight hours in neighboring hill districts.

There is no curfew in six other hill districts.

DIMAPUR, JUN 7 (NPN): In a bid to banish the enmity between the Karbis and Khasi-Pnars created by third forces among these two tribes, the All Party Hill Leader’s Conference (APHLC) held a peace meeting in the market of Mukoilum in West Karbi Anglong district where headmen from both Karbi and Khasi-Pnar, stated that all of them wanted peace and free coming and going among these tribes people.

A press release by president of APHLC, J I Kathar stated that a large number of people from both KhasiPnar and Karbi attended the peace meeting in spite of the economic blockade imposed by a section of Karbi people.

The two parties further stated that among both the two tribes, there were a few “bad character persons” who did not observe social norms and were involved in anti-social activities beyond the control of the headmen, and that they always tried to over-rule the instructions of the Headmen of the villages.

In the meeting, Some Karbi speakers accused the Khasi-Pnars of not accepting government development

schemes like LP. School and ICDS schemes and not voting during elections in West Karbi Anglong. The speakers from Khasi-Pnar stated that LP.School was given with only one teacher and ICDS was given without necessary materials. They however did not disclose why they did not vote in West Karbi Anglong.

The press release further stated that a person who did not want peace, threatened the APHLC that if it brought peace among the Karbis and Khasi and the lift the economic blockade against the Khasi-Pnars, and then if any criminal act occurred, then the APHLC from polling station committees, to constituency committee of Amreng cc committee and Central APHLC would be targeted by attackers.

The APHLC stated that this is a clear indication that if APHLC or any body restores peace among the Khasi-Pnars and the Karbis, some agents who are against unity of tribes people will commit murder and arsons.

APHLC alleged these agents provocateurs are aiming to capture the Amreng

Council Constituency in Council elections in which non-tribal and foreigners and Bangasenas are becoming majority and they want to keep the tribal people in poverty, confused and disunited,The Peace Committee of that place had, in a peace meeting some days ago banned free movement and friendly mixing among Karbis and Khasi-Pnars by imposing economic blockade against the Khasi-Pnars.

APHLC opined the, will cause hatred of one tribe against the other and the enmity between KhasiPnars and Karbis will remain forever. It said these tribes people will face defeat.in any electionwhich is against the aim and objective of the APHLC. The APHLC said that it cannot bring peace for now because the Peace Committee which does not want peace, has been constituted by elected Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and the government of Assam but it will continue to work to bring peace and unity among the Karbis and Khasi-Pnars and other tribes people.

Sikkim CM seeks biz corridor connecting Nepal

GANGTOK, JUN 7 (PTI): Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Tuesday urged the Centre to build an international business corridor in West Sikkim for improved connectivity with Nepal, which, he claimed, will boost development in the Himalayan state.

Tamang also said the central government appeared to be keen to consider the project, keeping in view its benefits to the

people of Sikkim and added that a decision would be taken in due course.

“I had proposed an international business corridor connecting Uttarey with Chewabhanjya in West Sikkim to Nepal at the NITI Aayog meeting in the national capital recently and also took up the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he said at a function after inaugurating a forest house at Chewabhanjyang.

The Sikkim chief minister also said that if the two countries get connected with the international business corridor in Chewabhanjyang, it will speed up development in the state, creating opportunities for the local people in diverse sectors such as economic, social, cultural, tourism and education.

“Both India and Nepal have friendly relations and the proposed business

corridor is bound to have a positive impact on the economic growth of the two countries,” he said.

BHUBANESWAR, JUNE 7 (IANS): The Central Bureau of Investigation, which is inquiring into the triple train tragedy in Odisha’s Balasore district, has collected evidence from the accident site and Bahanga station, where the accident took place on June 2 evening.

According to sources, the CBI officials visited the accident site and Bahanaga Bazar Railway station twice on Tuesday and spent nearly 45 minutes again on Wednesday and collected vital information and evidence related to the accident.

The CBI team, along with the forensic and technical team, examined the main line, loop line, accident site, signalling room and station master’s office.

They have examined all employees and seized mobile phones of some of the Railway employees, who were on duty when

NEW DELHI, JUN 7 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Egypt this month, around six months after the two countries elevated their ties to the level of strategic partnership, diplomatic sources said on Wednesday.

It will be Modi’s first visit to the African nation after he became prime minister in 2014.

The sources said the visit is set to boost cooperation in a number of areas including trade, investment, agriculture and defence.

There has been no official announcement on PM Modi’s trip to Egypt.

India is keen to further expand ties with Egypt, a key player in the politics of both the Arab world as well as Africa. It is also seen as a major gateway to markets in Africa and Europe.

Resetting priorities

A

lot has been stated, both past and present and will continue to be so in future, to gloss over the economic vision for Nagaland, through the aberrated vision of the policy planners who have perfected the copy-paste culture. There is no harm in dreaming but to claim success without serious analysis is premature. The state’s expected progress has been grounded due to various reasons and unless these are remedied or rectified, all claims would be like day dreaming. Today, institutionalized corruption has become so deep rooted in the government that people have become insensitive to it. The vicious circle gets enlarged during elections which has to be the starting point where the battle against corruption has to be fought. Politicians unfortunately, suffer from tunnel vision – the object to accumulate money to fight election and be in power to recoup money and again fight elections. Besides politicians are government servants, especially the bureaucrats, who are considered to be among the richest in India.

This culture has also seen the rapid rise of a noveau riche, facilitated by lack of governance, where rules are no longer vogue but vague and archaic. on the other hand, the silence of the “religious leaders” of the church against the moral and ethical downslide is deafening. The tenets of any religion is to guide the followers by inculcating moral and ethical values in each.This is a major contribution for achieving social peace and administration of justice. When moral and ethical values or spiritual values, become extinct, then it only encourages individual corruption.

This then enlarges into institutionalized corruption, which is the most dangerous and deadly condition in society. Institutionalized corruption has become so deep rooted in society and government that people have become insensitive to it. This has led to a condition known as “asociality”- a moral abyss that leads ordinary people to believe that there is a price tag for everything as those in power have purchased the mandate to serve personal, family or community needs above all. Added to it is the rise of gun culture, which is responsible for creating fear and mayhem.

The consequences are due to the misdirected pride in the past because the narrative suits and justifies missteps has today led to negative consequences.

People across states have no time to dwell in the past as they consider the present more relevant for the future.In this context, it is regrettable that all the hollow claims of ‘progress and development’ has reduced Nagaland to the status as ’underperforming’ with an overall score of 34.41, and at the bottom fourth out of 36 states and Union Territories in India.

Nagaland’s score was below the All-India average of 44.48 and comparison with the previous year’s index. Also in 2021, according to NITI Aayog’s North Eastern Region District Sustainable Development Goal Index, Nagaland performed poorly in six goals including no poverty, good health and well-being and infrastructure. There is a time and place for gala entertainment and impressive event management.

Now is the time to set things right and this can only be done by resetting priorities.

India’s Act East Policy and its Influence on North Eastern Region

S

oon after India got liberated from British domination, the newly independent India paid no attention to the North Eastern part of India. Not only did it neglect the North Eastern part of its territory but it also paid no heed to South East Asian countries. Therefore, it was during the time Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao in the year 1991, mooted the “Look East Policy” to build a better relationship with South East Asia countries. Thus, the North Eastern part of India became indispensable as this region can make inroads into the South East Asian countries.

Initially, the focus of the Look East Policy was on the economic domain to attract more investment and technology from East Asia countries. But later on, under prime minister Atal Bihar Vajpayee, it became strategic as well. In the year 2011, after 20 years of its implementation, a debate arose that India should not only Look East but also Act East. In the meantime, the Secretary of the United States Hillary Clinton during her visit to India suggested that Look East must become Act East as India must engage more with the East. The United States wanted to encourage India’s role in the South East Asia region to become an important player to balance China. But prime minister Manmohan Singh at that time did not respond to such suggestions.

However, no sooner did the government change in 2014 and the Modi government came to power, the new government changed Look East Policy to Act East Policy. This Act East Policy accelerated the focus on the North Eastern part of India as the gateway to penetrating South East Asian countries, especially the Eastern Indian Ocean, that is, the Bay of Bengal. The Bay of Bengal’s security and economy became an important strategic goal for India under its new Act East Policy. Under the Act East Policy initiative, the Indian Navy and Coast Guard also started visiting the Western Pacific to increase maritime cooperation with Japan and Vietnam.

Through this policy, India has taken a proactive approach to initiating intense exchanges with South Asia, South East Asia and Australia. Moreover, India also set up a full-fledged mission to ASEAN with an ambassador.

It also sent a delegation to Shangri-La Dialogue 2016 and in the same 2018 Dialogue, Modi gave a stunning speech. This was the first time that an Indian prime minister gave a speech at an Asian Security Conference Shangri-La. One of the most important parts of India’s Act East Policy is to put the entire Indo-Pacific at the top of its priorities. Indo-Pacific simply means the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. In Act East Policy, India has continued to consider ASEAN as the important cornerstone and its developmental regionalism as an important player just like the Look East Policy. However, in the previous Look East Policy, India had extended the scope to geographical terms. The older Look East Policy focused on East Asia only but the new Act East Policy focuses on South Asia, South East Asia, Bangladesh, Myanmar and also the Pacific Island countries et al.

As a part of the Act East Policy, India is focusing on Bangladesh and Myanmar by making good bilateral relations through trade and investment. India has increased engagement with the North Eastern region as a part of this policy. India’s Act East Policy focuses on the security dimension of the Indian Ocean. India in the past shied away from taking responsibility but now India has agreed to take security responsibility in the Eastern Indian Ocean and the protection of global commons. Global commons mean resources that are shared by the entire globe. For instance, space, cyberspace, Oceans etc. India respects the idea of a free and open global commons therefore India respected the UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) settlement of its maritime boundaries with Bangladesh but China did not respect the UNCLOS ruling on the South China Sea in 2016. India condemned this

behaviour. India has shown a willingness to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific along with the United States and other countries. It is not only the South East Asian countries that are in trouble

by China but India has also faced the same Chinese interference. China has developed the maritime Silk Road Initiative to create assets in India’s naval territory. Chinese submarines had made a port to Sri Lanka and Pakistan. And because China interferes with Indian territory through a “String of Pearls” initiative, India also interferes in East Asia and South East Asia as a reprisal move.

India’s Act East Policy is also complimentary to its United States policy. It has come with a stronger engagement with the United States.

Since the 1990s after the end of the cold war, India and the United States’ relationship has improved dramatically. A nuclear deal with the United States was signed during Manmohan’s Singh government in 2008. However, it was the Modi government that increased its engagement with the United States. Modi had a summit meeting with Obama in 2014 just four months after coming to power. Obama also visited India in 2015 to meet Modi. Both countries have signed many important deals such as COMCASA (Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement), LEMOA (Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement), BECA (Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement), MISTA (Maritime Information Sharing Technical Agreement) etc. that have made India get access to the same security system that NATO gets. Most importantly both countries now have greater geopolitical convergence. During the cold war, India was closer to USSR and the United States was anti-USSR but now both India and the United States have a common enemy and threat to China. Earlier, the United States wanted to focus more on Western Pacific and India, on the other hand, wanted to focus on the Indian Ocean but now they have an Indo-Pacific policy where together with Australia and Japan will focus on Indo-

It is a hidden ministry that brings forth fruit through which the Father is glorified. Am I allowing my spiritual life to waste away, or am I focused, bringing everything to one central point— the atonement of my Lord? Is Jesus Christ more and more dominating every interest of my life? If the central point, or the most powerful influence, of my life is the atonement of the Lord, then every aspect of my life will bear fruit for Him. However, I must take the time to realize what this central point of power is. Am I willing to give one minute out of every hour to concentrate on it? “If you abide in Me…”— that is, if you continue to act, and think, and work from that central point— “you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you” (John 15:7). Am I abiding? Am I taking the time to abide? What is the greatest source of power in my life? Is it my work, service, and sacrifice for others, or is it my striving to work for God? It should be none of these— what ought to exert the greatest power in my life is the atonement of the Lord. It is not on what we spend the greatest amount of time that molds us the most, but whatever exerts the most power over us.

We must make a determination to limit and concentrate our desires and interests on the atonement by the Cross of Christ.

The disciple who abides in Jesus is the will of God, and what appears to be his free choices are actually God’s foreordained decrees. Is this mysterious? Does it appear to contradict sound logic or seem totally absurd? Yes, but what a glorious truth it is to a saint of God.

s there any one amongst us who wants polluted surroundings? No, certainly not but we are the one who are environmental criminals and making our planet more dirty and polluted. What is the deepest point in the ocean, the Mariana trench, and the highest mountain peak in the world, Mt. Everest, have in common? And the answer is , despite being among the planet’s most remote and inaccessible environments, they both contain tiny pieces of plastic from human activities miles away. It is clear now that without urgent action, the estimated 11 million metric tons of plastic currently entering the ocean annually will triple in the next twenty years.

We should know that some 11 million tonnes of plastic waste flow annually into the oceans. This may triple by 2040. More than 800 marine and coastal species are affected by this pollution through ingestion, entanglement, and other dangers. A shift to a circular economy can reduce the volume of plastics entering oceans by over 80 per cent by 2040; reduce virgin plastic production by 55 per cent; save governments US$70 billion by 2040; reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 per cent; and create 700,000 additional jobs – mainly in the global south.

More than 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year worldwide, half of which is designed to be used only once. Of that, less than 10 per cent is recycled. An estimated 19-23 million tonnes end up in lakes, rivers and seas annually. That is approximately the weight of 2,200 Eiffel Towers all together. Microplastics – tiny plastic particles up to 5mm in diameter – find their way into food, water and air. It is estimated that each person on the planet consumes more than 50,000 plastic particles per year –and many more if inhalation is considered.

This underscores the importance of this year’s World Environment Day (WED) in mobilizing transformative action from every corner of the world.

WED is observed around the world on 5th June and it is one of the most popular events observed all over the world. This year’s focus is to beat plastic pollution. The year 1972 marked a turning point in the development of international environmental politics: the first major conference on environmental issues, convened under the auspices of the United Nations, was held from June 5-16 in Stockholm (Sweden). Later that year, on 15 December, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution (A/RES/2994 (XXVII)) designating June 5 as WED. It is not too easy to leave without plastic as it has become part and parcel of life but what we need to do is to limit its usage and look for an alternative. One of the career options may be in the field of environmental activism. Aspirants from any academic background may become activists but it is always important if they are equally academically qualified to understand the terms related to environment.

There are courses like Graduation/ Post Graduation in Environmental Sciences. Many colleges and universities offer these courses in India and abroad. There are similar courses like life sciences, ecology, etc.

There are voluntary organizations like youth clubs, nongovernmental organisations engaged in different environmental activities. The activity includes from pure research to activism and generating awareness amongst the public. There are opportunities in media houses and law too as environmental laws are equally important which brings opportunity for lawyers to become environmental activists. One must have effective communication and a positive personality to be successful in this field.

Let us bring solutions and not pollution and choose environmental activism as our career choice by bringing solutions and innovations by us or inspire others to do the same.

One important thing to note is that India’s commitment to Eastern Region has increased under its Act East Policy but India has deep reservations regarding direct military involvement in the South China Sea to help the United States and South East Asia countries to balance China. Of course, this may change shortly. However, the United States has realised India’s importance in choking Malacca Strait from the Western side. India has also signed a defence cooperation agreement with the United States.

India’s focus on Act East Policy and renewed relations with the United States has come with the foreign policy imperative of improving its focus on the Indian Ocean region.

Traditionally India’s focus has been more on land but now it is focusing on the “blue economy” and “Indian Ocean”. India Navy’s focus on submarine forces and indigenization, that is, domestic manufacturing of naval equipment has conspicuously increased. India also organized the “International Fleet Review” in 2016 to increase naval cooperation with other countries. India has also launched SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) initiative to develop a blue economy and increase maritime cooperation and collective actions in the Indian Ocean region.

India has launched this to counter China’s maritime Silk Road Initiative. Indian maritime security strategy released in 2015 confirmed that India focuses on the South-West, Eastern Indian Ocean including the East coast of Africa, the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea etc. India is also focusing on developing capabilities for small island countries like Mauritius and Seychelles so that they don’t fall prey to China. It is trying to become a net security provider in the Indian Ocean and mostly focuses on the Eastern Indian Ocean. As a part of the Act East Policy India focuses on the Bay of Bengal region, developing connectivity with the Bay of Bengal. India has launched

the BIMSTEC (Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bhutan, and Nepal as members) initiative to improve connectivity and economic relations with the Bay of Bengal countries.

India has invested in creating Asian trilateral highways that connect Moreh in Manipur to Mae Sot in Thailand via Myanmar. India has also started to focus on improving maritime connectivity with ASEAN. India is also willing to sign an agreement such as the coastal shipping agreement and express interest in improving ports to increase its trade with Bangladesh and beyond and improve connectivity in the North Eastern region. India has also launched the Sagarmala project to improve its ports. Ports are the drivers of the new-age economy.

Hence, India despite having a coastline of 7516.6 km has under-developed ports.

India’s Eastern ports are in much worse conditions than Western ports. India is now privatizing its ports to develop them. It also organized a global maritime summit in 2016 along with South Korea which is a global leader in shipbuilding.

Instead of China, India now prefers Japan to invest in infrastructure in a strategically sensitive region such as the North Eastern region and Andaman and Nicobar Island. It is also supporting Japan’s Bay of Bengal industrial growth-belt initiative to help Bangladesh become a hub in the Bay of Bengal.

Enhancing maritime security cooperation with Countries in the Bay of Bengal, India has started to focus on increasing naval cooperation with different countries in the Bay of Bengal. India signed a strategic partnership with Singapore in 2015 and revised its defence cooperation agreement for bilateral exercises.

India also conducts Milan exercises since 1995 when more than 40 countries joined India with their navies in a multilateral naval exercise.

The United States joined Milan for the first time in 2022. India has also started conducting joint navy patrolling and naval exercises with the Indonesian Navy and Royal Thai Navy. India has

also signed a white shipping agreement with Thailand.

As a part of the Act East Policy, irrespective of which kind of political system is in power, India has matured to maintain a friendly relationship with Myanmar. This is unlike the past when India broke a relationship with the military junta. India and Myanmar Navy now conduct joint bilateral exercises, patrolling India’s Ocean and Myanmar is the only third country after Thailand and Indonesia to sign such an agreement with India. India has also launched a makein-India initiative to boost India’s defence exports to the Bay of Bengal region. It has started shipping naval equipment to the South East Asian militaries. India has increased naval security cooperation with countries like Vietnam and Bangladesh beyond the South East Asian setup.

Earlier, India was wary of inviting or joining any naval exercises, patrolling etc. due to its own NAM (Non-Alignment Movement) and also due to the fear of angering China. But now India has accepted its responsibility in the Indian Ocean and it is undertaking a joint exercise with extra-regional powers such as the United States, Japan and Australia under the QUAD initiative. Malabar exercise is done along with QUAD. India is also expanding its naval reach by doing exercises not just in the Indian Ocean but also Western Pacific. India also participated in the US-led exercise in the region such as the multilateral Cobra Gold exercise in Thailand in 2015 and The Rim of the Pacific Ocean Exercise in 2016.

In summation, India has understood the perils and consequences of China’s String of Pearl policy and its Belt and Road Initiative. Hence, India is now taking the role of net security provider thoughtfully by engaging North Eastern Region through connectivity, trade, security and multicooperation.

he liberty that we enjoy in our land did not just come about to us on a whim.

Blood and tears were shed by our ancestors during the 1950s and the early 1960s. Article 371A did not just come about to us on a silver platter. There were people;our predecessors who had to go through thick and thin to buy us what we have today, i.e our freedom. Thanks to their honorable sacrifices we have the luxury of enjoying statehood. But despite the fact that our state has been sheltered by the Art 371A, it is unfortunate that jeopardy is knocking on our door.

The blessings that have been bestowed upon us by our ancestors;by our God is withering away. As the book of Proverbs 29:2 states when the wicked rule, the people groan. And this verse plays significance in what is happening in our state today.

One of the many and the most serious issues that we have in Nagaland which our leaders have failed to contain is the problem of illegal immigrants or the ILP. For now, we the locals are the head and they are the tail;we are the landowners and they are the tenants;we are the lenders and they are the borrowers. But unfortunately and as terrifying as it may sound, this will all change unless we address the elephant in the room.

This issue that we have had for a while is gradually being noticed thanks to the various news channels in Nagaland and also thanks to the social media platforms.

May I kindly remind us that what we are facing right now and what we are going to face in the days to come has already happened in the past.

Let me take you to the times

of the old Testament,the times of Jeremiah who is known as the weeping prophet. The prophet Jeremiah preached a message of doom and destruction to the stiff necked people of israel for 40 years, who refused to turn away from their wicked ways.

Jeremiah proclaimed God’s impending Judgement on them because of their immorality. But the children of Israel would not heed his words. They labeled Jeremiah as someone insane who had lost his mind.

Fast forward into the 40 years and then we see the mighty Babylonian empire which God had raised against Israel as his instrument for chastening his people. After the siege of Jerusalem the children of Israel are taken as captives by the Babylonians. As they are taken by the enemy nation, the Israelites look back and they weep bitterly;they recall what the prophet Jeremiah said to them all those years.

This story of the old testament plays a key role in under-

standing what looms over our head and what is to come if we continue in our path of living in Greed, Luxury and Corruption.

Surely God’s chastening will come upon us if we continue to walk in this same manner. The public and especially the ones in authorities need to open their eyes. If we love our children, our culture, our tradition;we would do the right thing. The book of Proverbs 27:12 says A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions.

Now to get to the crux of the matter, the ILP which is maintained only in name must be kept in check strictly.

Least, it becomes too late and our tribal people fades from our own land; least they i.e illegal immigrants become the head and we the tail; least we become the tenants and they the landowner; least they become the lender and we the borrower.

The NBSE has declared the results on 24th May 2023 and yet, we have not seen any of the promises being fulfilled in respect of the students, i.e., (1) free digital tablets to all meritorious students of class X & XII. (2) Free of cost, quality education to all female students from KG to PG. (3) Free scooty to meritorious college going female students. Felicitations are pouring in but still no tablets, admissions are going on but still not free of cost, at least college results are yet to be declared. Can we expect any sincerity. Kuknalim !

His reaction came against the backdrop of some youths displaying photos of 17th Century Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in a procession in Ahmednagar and tension in Kolhapur city. He said the acts of glorifying Mughal emperor Aurangzeb will not be tolerated in Maharashtra.

15 people killed in collision between truck and bus in Bangladesh

DHAKA, JUN 7 (PTI): At least 15 construction workers were killed and several others injured when a truck collided with a pick-up van in Bangladesh on Wednesday, officials said. The accident occurred at around 5.30 am when the sand-laden truck hit the pick-up van carrying around 25-30 construction workers in the Kutubpur area in Sylhet’s Dakshin Sur ma Upazila, reported The Dhaka Tribune newspaper. Flight AI173 was diverted to Magadan on Tuesday due to an engine glitch in the Boeing 777-200 LR aircraft. The flight, carrying 216 passengers and 16 crew, landed safely, the Tata Group-owned private carrier said in a statement Tuesday evening. An airport

spokesperson told Russia’s official Sputnik news agency that all the passengers are foreign citizens, including over 40 US nationals and several citizens of Canada.

The travellers were cleared through customs and brought to hotels in Magadan and provided with food,” the state-owned TASS news agency reported. LONDON, JUN 7 (IANS): Russia may be plotting to blow up the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, Ukraine has warned, after explosions at a major dam and hydroelectric plant caused mass flooding in the Kherson region and sparked a humanitarian disaster, the media reported.

A series of blasts caused the critical Nova Kahkovka dam, which lies

along the Dnieper river in Russian-held territory, to partially collapse and led to ‘catastrophic’ floods, the Daily Mail reported.

inger-songwriter Dua Lipa and music label Warner Records have won their bid to dismiss a copyright lawsuit against hit song ‘Levitating’.

The songstress and label were being sued by Artikal who claimed the 2020 tuned copies the core hook from their song titled ‘Live Your Life’, which was released in 2017, reports ‘Mirror.co.uk’.

Artikal Sound System had put forward a theory that claimed that one of Dua Lipa’s co-writers had previously worked with a woman who was allegedly taught guitar by the brother-in-law of one band member.

According to Billboard, in her ruling, U.S. District Judge Sunshine S. Sykes appeared to be unimpressed as she said: “These attenuated links, which bear little connection to either of the two musical

compositions at issue here. Also do not suggest a reasonable likelihood that defendants actually encountered plaintiffs’ song.”

Ju d g e S y k e s a l s o found that there was no sign that anyone involved in the creation of Dua’s top hit had had “access” to the little-known song from the reggae group.

However, the band claimed that their song was “widely available” and insisted that one of the writers for ‘Levitating’ must have heard it, adding that it had been played at concerts and had sold “several hundred” physical CDs and that it

was available on some streaming platforms.

As per ‘Mirror.co.uk’, Judge Sykes found that the claims were “too generic or too insubstantial” to sustain a lawsuit.

She added: “Plaintiffs’ failure to specify how frequently they performed ‘Live Your Life’ publicly during the specified period, where these performances took place, and the size of the venues and/or audiences precludes the Court from finding that Plaintiffs’ live performances of the song plausibly contributed to its saturation of markets in which Defendants would have encountered it”.

LONDON, JUN 7 (IANS): Chinese snooker players Liang Wenbo and Li Hang have been handed lifetime bans as part of a group of 10 players penalized by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) for match-fixing.

The WPBSA issued a statement on Tuesday, confirming that the ten players were charged with match-fixing offenses. It pronounced lifetime bans for Liang and Li and imposed significant suspensions for the other players involved, reports Xinhua. Liang, 36, who has been under suspension from snooker events since last October, was found guilty of manipulating or participating in the manipulation of five snooker matches, attempting to persuade or enable other players to fix nine matches. CHENNAI, JUN 7 (IANS): The All India Chess Federation (AICF) has cancelled the Indian team’s Canadian Exposure Tour for lack of player confirmations, it is learnt.

“The cancellation has nothing to do with the government. Seven out of 12 Indian chess players expressed their inability to be part of the tour and hence, the programme was scrapped,” a person in the know of developments told IANS. “Five male players and two female players had confirmed participation out of the 12,” the person added.

He refuted the view that the Central government declined to fund the tour programme as AICF is flush with funds.

Queried as to why the chance is not given to the next ranked players, the person said the government funds the tour expenses visa/flight/boarding and lodging- for only the top six players of each category and the rules does not allow onboarding lower ranked players even though it is an exposure tour.

NEW DELHI, JUN 7 (PTI): The protesting wrestlers on Wednesday agreed to suspend their agitation till June 15 after the government assured them of filing a chargesheet against outgoing WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh by then and holding the elections to the sports body by end of the month.

Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik met Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, who invited them for a meeting to break the deadlock, three days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah met them and discussed their demands.

After the meeting, which lasted over five hours, Malik and Punia told reporters that they have also been assured that the FIRs lodged against them will be withdrawn.

The protesting wrestlers and many of their supporters were booked for violation of law and order on May 28 when they marched towards the new Parliament building without permission.

“We were told that the police investigation (in the case against Singh) will be complete by June 15. Till then, we have been asked

Anurag Thakur to wait and suspend the protest,” Malik said.

However, both Malik and Punia asserted that their agitation is not over and they have suspended their protest only till June 15 as requested by the government.

The marathon meeting between wrestlers and Thakur comes amidst the government’s efforts to reach out to the top wrestlers, who have been protesting since April 23 and demanding the arrest of Singh. Addressing a press conference after the meeting, Thakur said the meeting was held in a “good atmosphere and in a positive manner” and that the government has accepted the demands of the protesting group.

“In the meeting, it was suggested by the wrestlers that the chargesheet in the case be filed by June 15,

YECHEON (SOUTH KOREA), JUN 7 (PTI): The Indian women’s 4x400m relay team and 1500m runner Laxita Vinod Sandila won a gold medal each to help the country end at third spot at the Asian U-20 Athletics Championships here Wednesday.

Sandila ran her personal best time of 4:24.23 seconds to clinch gold on the concluding day of competitions. She bettered her earlier personal best of 4:26.48s by more than two seconds to bag India’s fifth gold of the championship.

Later in the day, the dependable quarter-miler Rezoana Mallick Heena

anchored the longer relay (4x400m) team to gold, clocking 3:40.49s. Kazakhstan won silver with a time of 3:46.19 seconds, while Korea (3:47.46s) took the bronze.

The men’s 4x400m relay team settled for a silver with a time of 3:08.78 seconds.

Mehdi Hasan added a bronze in the men’s 1500m race with a time of 3:56.01s while Shivaji Parashu Madappagoudra bagged a silver in the men’s 5000m race by clocking 14:49.05s as India’s tally swelled to 19 medals.

India ended third with 6 gold, 7 silver and 6

bronze, behind Japan (14 gold, 4 silver, 5 bronze) and China (11 gold, 5 silver, 3 bronze).

On the opening day on Sunday, fast-rising Rezoana Mallick Heena and Bharatpreet Singh clinched a gold medal each in women’s 400m and men’s discus throw respectively.

Shot putter Siddharth Choudhary added another gold on Monday with a personal best throw of 19.52m while decathlete Sunil Kumar won a yellow metal on Tuesday.

A 45-member Indian team, which had 19 women, competed in the June 4 to 7 event.

RIYADH, JUN 7 (AGENCIES): Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema became the latest big-name player to head to Saudi Arabia as he joined Al Ittihad as a free agent, the club said on Tuesday, after the French striker’s departure from Real Madrid.

Benzema, who ended a trophy-laden 14 years at Real this week, joins the Saudi Arabian champions on a three-year deal and will wear the number nine shirt.

“I am excited to experience a new football league in a different country. I have been fortunate to achieve amazing things in my career and achieve everything I can in Spain and Europe,” Benzema said. “It now feels the time is right for a new challenge and project ... I am looking forward to joining my new team mates and, together with them, help take this amazing club and the game in Saudi Arabia to new levels.”

Benzema follows his former Real team mate Cristiano Ronaldo to the Gulf country after the Portugal forward signed a 2-1/2 year contract estimated by media to be worth more than 200 million euros ($213.78 million) with Al Nassr in December. Having joined Real

in 2009 from Olympique Lyonnais, Benzema became the spearhead of the club’s attack after Ronaldo left to Juventus in 2018, winning the Champions League five times and the LaLiga title four times.

He had his best season with Real in the 2021-22 campaign when he scored 44 goals in all competitions to lead the club to a recordextending 14th European title as well as the LaLiga crown. Early in 2021 he earned a recall from France manager Didier Deschamps to the national team for the first time in six years, after falling out of favour due to his alleged involvement in the Mathieu Valbuena sex tape scandal. The 35-yearold won the Ballon d’Or award for the best men’s player in the world last year and he looked set to stay at the Spanish club for one more year, after a 2022-23 season in which he struggled with injuries and missed out on France’s World Cup squad in Qatar.

Benzema’s deal raises questions about future of Saudi league top scorer

The arrival of Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema at Saudi Arabia champions Al-Ittihad may not be all positive as the deal puts the future of Saudi Pro League top scorer Abderrazak Hamdallah in doubt.

14 years, on a three-year mega deal, before confirming he will wear the number nine shirt at the expense of Hamdallah. The Moroccan forward was a key part of Al-Ittihad’s success last season. Hamdallah, 32, three years younger than Benzema, scored 21 goals in 26 games and clinched the top scorer award ahead of Al-Nassr’s Anderson Talisca and Al-Hilal’s Odion Ighalo.

Hamdallah was particularly clinical in the big games and was one of the main reasons that Al-Ittihad won the title for the first time since 2009. The player was relaxed about the possibility of Benzema’s arrival when

asked about it by local media last week. “We welcome any player who comes and can help the team. He is welcome, and we do not have a problem,” he said.

“We are great players, and we are used to competing inside and outside the field, and we are available for anything,” the forward added. Hamdallah has not commented since Benzema’s deal was confirmed.

But as long as Benzema is fit, it is expected Hamdallah will not be the main forward, and it will be difficult to change his position, given his lack of speed and similarity in play to the French striker.
