Covid vax 8 times less effective against Delta variant, says study

NEW DELHI, JUL 5 (AGENCIES): Delta variant of coronavirus is eight times less sensitive to antibodies generated by vaccines, a new study claims. This could mean that Covid19 vaccines are eight times less effective against the Delta variant compared to the original strain of SARS-CoV-2 first detected in China’s Wuhan. Findings of the study assert that the Delta variant is both more transmissible and better able to evade natural immunity mounted by the immune system of recovered Covid-19 patients. Titled “Sars-Cov-2 B.1.617.2 Delta Variant Emergence and Vaccine Breakthrough: Collaborative Study”, the study was conducted on more than 100 healthcare workers (HCWs) at three centres in India, including Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. Scientists from Cambridge Institute of Therapeutic Immunology and Infectious Disease were also part of the study.

DIMAPUR, JUL 5 (PTI): As state-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) increased the petrol price for the second consecutive day on Monday, the petrol price has breached Rs.100-a-litre mark in one more district— Wokha. With the latest hike, petrol now has crossed the Rs.100 per litre mark in nine districts—Tuensang, Kiphire, Noklak, Mon, Phek, Zunheboto, Longleng, Mokokchung and Wokha— in Nagaland The hike on Monday is the 35th increase in the price of petrol since May 4.

Delta variant is both more transmissible and better able to evade natural immunity mounted by the immune system of recovered patients Researchers found that Delta was the dominant strain among fully vaccinated healthcare workers infected with Covid-19. The respiratory viral loads were also higher in the cases of these healthcare workers compared to those diagnosed with non-Delta variants. “Increased replication could be responsible for generating greater numbers of virus particles, or the particles themselves could be more likely to lead to a productive infection,” says the study. While severe infection was rare among infected

healthcare workers, scientists say breakthrough transmission clusters in hospitals associated with the Delta variant are a matter of concern. Breakthrough transmission, in this case, refers to instances of fully vaccinated healthcare workers testing positive for the Delta variant. The study, which is yet to be submitted for peerreview, goes on to say that the Delta variant of the virus has enhanced spike proteins. This enables the virus to attach itself to the epithelial cells found in the lungs and infect more people compared to the Wuhan strain.

“In the absence of published data on the transmissibility of the Delta variant, we predict that this variant will have a transmission advantage relative to Wuhan-1 with D614G in individuals with pre-existing immunity from vaccine/natural infection as well as in settings where there is low vaccine coverage and low prior exposure,” findings of the study read. This latest study now suggests that re-infection and increased transmissibility played a significant role in the spread of the Delta variant of Covid-19. Chairperson of the Institute of Clinical Microbiology and Immunology at Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Dr Chand Wattal told news agency PTI, “From this study, it appears that we have miles to go before we sleep in case of Covid-19 pandemics. These mutations are bound to happen if we lower our guard and allow ourselves to fall prey to this virus, giving it an opportunity to multiply.”

CVYS slams Police for blocking, diverting road DIMAPUR, JUL 5 (NPN): Chümoukedima Village Youth Society (CVYS) has expressed strong objection against Nagaland Police at Chümoukedima, for blocking the road towards RP Gate and diverting it to Chümoukedima village since over two months. CVYS through its president Kedovikho Visezo and general secretary Rokovikho Thepa appealed home minister and director general of police to intervene, so that the matter could be resolved at the earliest in having the road immediately cleared for resumption of traffic. CVYS also warned that in the event of failure to accede to its demands it would be compelled to initiate measures deemed necessary in the interest of public welfare

and citizens’ right of way, and that the police department would be held solely responsible in the resultant fallout. CVYS said the police authorities were using the road to stock construction materials and also preparing mortar in the middle of the road to construct a building. CVYS said this was an “unethical practise” by Nagaland Police and also a blatant misuse of authority in violating citizens’ right of way by blocking and diverting the road. CVYS said initially it was presumed that the diversion was to enable repair of a culvert. However, it said after proper inquiry, it was found not to be and therefore, “an act of dishonesty and trickery” without any consid-

eration for the poor people who have been using the road for their survival since long. CVYS asserted that the RP Gate-Chümoukedima village approach road was not the property of police headquarters. CVYS said the road was constructed by the British prior to India’s Independence and way before the police headquarters was even established, It also said the police was imposing all sorts of restrictions on the road and inconveniencing the public regularly. CVYS said the matter was also highlighted by Chümoukedima Village Council through a representation to DIGP (border and training), with a reminder letter thereafter. However, this did not elicit any positive response.

NH, GNF decry extension of ‘disturbed area’ in Nagaland DIMAPUR, JUL 5 (NPN): Naga Hoho (NH) and the Global Naga Forum (GNF) have criticised the Centre’s decision to extend the “disturbed area” tag in Nagaland under Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958. NH: While expressing its anguish over the failure of the Government of India (GoI) to lift AFSPA from Naga areas despite repeated appeals by several Naga civil society groups and human rights activists, Naga Hoho accused successive governments in Delhi of remaining a mute spectator on the matter. NH asserted that there was no space for such draconian laws in the largest

democratic country. It said Nagas’ struggle for self-determination could not be equated with “terrorism” or “secessionism” as GoI had recognised the uniqueness of Naga political history and the universal principle that sovereignty lay with the people in a democracy. It further said both Centre and Naga people had agreed to a settlement by respecting the wishes of the people sharing sovereign power and to establish a new relationship for an enduring and lasting relationship between the two sides. It said leaders from India must know that the Indian armed forces had been terrorising Naga people for more than six decades. (Cont’d on p-8)

Elgar Parishad case: 84-yr-old activist Fr Stan dies in hospital waiting for bail

India to make CoWIN available to all countries NEW DELHI, JUL 5 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday offered CoWIN, India’s technological platform spearheading its COVID-19 vaccination drive, as a “digital public good” to the world. Addressing the CoWIN Global Conclave via video conference, he said the platform is being made open source so that it is available to all countries. He said vaccination is the best hope for humanity to emerge from the pandemic successfully and noted that India decided to adopt a completely digital approach for the exercise. Indian civilization considers the whole world as one family and this pandemic has made many people realise the fundamental truth of this philosophy, he said. “That’s why, our technology platform for COVID vaccination - the platform we call CoWIN- is being prepared to be made open source so (that) it will be available in any and all countries,” Modi said.

MUMBAI, JUL 5 (PTI): Priest-activist Stan Swamy, arrested under an anti-terror law in the Elgar Parishad case, died at a Mumbai hospital on Monday in the middle of his fight for bail on health grounds. The 84-year-old Jesuit priest—possibly the oldest person to be accused of terrorism in India, as per his lawyer—had been on a ventilator since Sunday after his health worsened rapidly. Dr.Ian D’souza, director of the Bandra-based private Holy Family Hospital, where Swamy was undergoing treatment, and the tribal rights activist’s lawyer Mihir Desai informed a bench of the Bombay High Court of his death following cardiac arrest. The bench, comprising Justices SS Shinde and NJ Jamadar, expressed shock over the news and said it was at a loss of words and hoped Swamy’s soul would rest in peace. oldest in India be charged under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), the lawyer said. Senior counsel Desai told the HC that he had no grievances against the court and the private hospital where Swamy was treated, but he could not say the same for NIA, which is conducting a probe into the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, and the state prison authorities. Desai claimed the NIA had been negligent in providing timely and adequate medical aid to Swamy, and asked the HC to initiate a judicial inquiry into the circumstances that led to the undertrial activist’s death. He said Swamy was taken to JJ Hospital 10 days be-

fore his admission to the Holy Family Hospital on May 29 but was not tested for COVID-19 at the JJ Hospital. Swamy’s report came out positive for coronavirus when he was tested at the private hospital, the lawyer said. “The NIA did not seek Swamy’s custody even for a single day, but kept on opposing his bail pleas,” he added. Desai pointed out that since Swamy died while being in custody, the state authorities were mandated to conduct a post mortem in accordance with guidelines of United Nations Human Rights Commission. While the HC did not pass any orders initiating a judicial inquiry, it recorded in its order that the amended section 176 (1A) of the CrPC mandated judicial inquiry into every case of death in custody. If the same provision was applicable in the present case, the state and prosecuting agencies would have to comply with the same, the HC said.

They termed Swamy’s death a “custodial murder” and alleged that the Centre and the judges who repeatedly denied bail to him had “blood on their hands”.

Gandhi said Swamy deserved justice and humaneness. Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren said the central government should be held accountable for its “absolute apathy” towards the octogenarian. Left parties too alleged that “inhuman treatment” was meted out to Swamy and demanded that all those

committee of the CPI(M) announced that it would hold state-wide demonstrations on July 8 to protest the injustice that Swamy faced. UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, Mary Lawlor, termed the death of Stan Swamy as ‘devastating’ and said that jailing human rights defenders like him was “inexcusable”.

State records 40 fresh Covid cases DIMAPUR, JUL 5 (NPN): Nagaland on Monday reported 40 fresh Covid-19 positive cases pushing the total caseload to 25,559. According to the Health department, 15 fresh cases were reported from Dimapur, Mokokchung-14, three each in Kohima and Peren, two each in Mon and Wokha and one in Phek. Further, no deaths were reported for the second consecutive day as the death toll stood at 499 (including 14 non-Covid deaths but with positivity). PTI adds: India saw a single-day rise of 39,796 new Covid infections, which took the tally of cases to 3,05,85,229, while the death toll climbed to 4,02,728 with 723 more fatalities, the lowest in around 88 days, according to Health Ministry data updated on Monday.

Niki-led NSCN (K) responds to WC,NNPGs DIMAPUR, JUL 5 (NPN): Responding to the statement by the Working Committee (WC) of the NNPGs, Niki Sumi-led NSCN (K) has clarified that it was not trying to create chaos and confusion or to hamper the longings of Nagas. In a statement issued through its addl. secretary MIP, Pilato Wotsa, the group said it was pertinent to respond to the “baseless statement of the WC, NNPG making senseless allegations against the NSCN/GPRN and against its sincere efforts

to bring about peace and tranquillity as desired by the Naga people.” MIP said that NSCN/ GPRN, in its conviction to uphold the wishes of the people, took a bold step to work for long lasting peace to prevail in the land, and in doing so the NSCN/GPRN came to the negotiating table not for any sort of “surrendering motives” whatsoever as alleged by WC, NNPG or for any other reason but to pave the way to fulfil Naga people’s desire for peace. Keeping in mind one

solution inclusive of all groups as clearly stated by Government of India, the group explained that as an entity representing Nagas and in their interest, it had come out to listen to them and would strive for what they want. Further, Niki-led group said NNPGs as a matured entity was expected to be more amicable and diplomatic in its approach, rather than trying to find fault with others because all groups were ultimately committed for peace to prevail in the

land and uphold the same in the true spirit. It stressed that peace would not be achieved by levelling allegations against one another, but only by taking all stakeholders on board. “Irrespective of tribes or political groups, Nagas at this juncture are committed for ushering in a new dawn of peace and tranquillity in the land by means of finding a solution. Naga people are sensible and intelligent enough to ascertain who is the wolf among the sheep,” the release added. K Y M C

Imphal, Agartala to get int’l airports: Jitendra

NEW DELHI, Jul 5 (PTI): Two more international airports will be added in North Eastern States, at Imphal and Agartala, with the aim of increasing connectivity in the region, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said on Saturday. Singh, who is the Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region, said the airport at Itanagar will be functional by the end of the year and that a facility is also coming up at Kohima. “At present, there is an international airport in Guwahati. We are planning to have airports in Imphal and Agartala as well,” Singh said, speaking at an event organized by ‘Amazing Namaste’. Singh admitted that he had never visited the North East till taking charge of the Ministry, but in all his interactions since then, con-

nectivity in the region was flagged as a major issue. Now the golden period of North East region has come. When India looks at strengthening the economy in the post-Covid times, it will start looking for regions where you have unexplored avenues, he said. Before 2014, NE was known for blockades, insurgency, encounters, for killings…a leader in Manipur who used to sit in protest with a tube in her mouth has vanished, the Minister said without naming the activist.

Over the course of the pandemic, Amazing Namaste, which calls itself as a community initiative to get tales of the North East, organized a series of 100 talks. Convenor of the forum, Atul Kulkarni, said developing entrepreneurship in the region and capacity building will be the focus from here on. Union Culture and Tourism Minister Prahlad Singh Patel said tourism is all about perceptions of a destination and alleged that there is a conspiracy to run down India. He also alleged that previous Governments in the Centre were wary of China’s threat due to which there was a delay in inaugurating a ready railway line in Arunachal Pradesh, which was eventually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after coming to power in 2014.

Correspondent SHILLONG, JUL 9: Notwithstanding the Central government voicing concern over the rising cases of COVID-19 in Meghalaya, State Health and Family Welfare Minister, Alexander Laloo Hek on Monday claimed that the curve was

IMPHAL, JUL 5: Accusing the Biren led government of “failure” in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic, the opposition Manipur Cong ress on Monday demanded Centre to review the Covid management activities of the state government. Instead of giving effortto contain the spread of the coronavirus, the ruling party remains concentrated on finding strategies to retain power in the next general elections to the state Assembly due by early next year, the opposition alleged. Addressing a virtual news conference today, Congress MLA K Meghachandra who is also one of the vice presidents of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) alleged that the rapid rise in the infections and fatalities due to COVID-19 showed the inability of the BJPled coalition government to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. He said that the rapidly growing cases of COVID-19 infections and deaths in the state despite two months of curfew to contain the spread of the disease clearly showed the complete failure of the state government’s Covid management activities. Meghachandra welcomed the Central government’s decision of sending

a multi-disciplinary team to review the control and containment activities in the state while hoping that the team will find out the reasons behind the rapid surges in the cases of infections and deaths due to the COVID-19 in the state. It will also point out the inability to contain the spread of the disease effectively by the state government, he said. “It is a matter of concern that this small state of Manipur is unable to curb the spread of the pandemic even though larger states have successfully tackled the same,” he said. The MPCC vicepresident was referring to Centre’s recent announcement of sending multidisciplinary teams to six states including Manipur, reporting a high number of COVID-19 cases. The Centre was sending the teams to interact with the local authorities and get a first-hand understanding of the challenges and issues being faced by them so as to strengthen their ongoing activities and remove bottlenecks, if any. The MPCC vice president demanded that while staying in the state, the Central team will review the state government’s Covid-19 management activities and point out lapses in the management in tackling the spread of the pandemic.

OPINiON/EDITORIAL

Nagaland Post Vol. XXxI NO. 210 Dimapur, TUESDAY, JULY 6, 2021

Way out and in

I

ncidents along the Assam-Nagaland border between Jorhat/Sivasagar districts in Assam and Mokokchung district in Nagaland are not infrequent, especially at areas adjoining Mariani and Amguri where certain sections of people there grab at any opportunity to add fuel to the situation instead of letting the due process of law take its course. Such incidents have been occurring with glaring regularity almost every year. The only time no incident occurred was in 2020 probably due to the pandemic. When much efforts were made to discuss issue across the table, the spell of incident-free record from 2020 till May 2021, was broker on June 29 this year. On that day, a hundred-strong company of uniformed personnel led by the Armed Police Battalion intruded inside Tzurangkong area (under Mokokchung district) for setting up of a border outpost at the vicinity of Vikuto village. What has surprised many observers was that the Assam Police has taken such a step in setting up an outpost within Nagaland and in doing so has blatantly violated the 1972 border agreement between the two states. The agreement was that both states will maintain a status quo along their borders and undertake no activity without the consent of the other. Of course Assam provoked and sparked the 1984 Merapani incident which Nagaland had to respond. People from both sides of the border have been involved in sparking incidents but this time it appears the Assam government has decided to adopt an aggressive policy. It may be recalled that in past incidents, public of Assam have been urging and pressurising their government to establish police checkposts deep within Nagaland. On July 23,2018 some labourers from Assam were prevented from clearing jungles within Nagaland and this led to bandh imposed at Amguri on Nagalandbound vehicles. Again the following year on January 24, 2019, huts hurriedly built for Assam Police, were dismantled by villagers from Nagaland since the latter claimed that the huts were erected within their land. What needs to be noted is that on May 23,2013 mobs at Mariani assaulted Naga passengers passing through and damaged their vehicles. The mobs did not spring up from nowhere nor were the incidents spontaneous. The mobs had been imposing their economic blockade on Nagaland for days on end. Eventually a district-level meeting between the DCs of Jorhat and Mokokchung and also talks at the highest level led to suspension of the blockade. It needs to be noted that the recent incident was preceded by another incident where the MLA of Mariani, Rupjyoti Kurmi who had been elected since 2006 as Congress candidate, had gone to the border on May 27 this year with an armed escort. There was some firing which, on video that went viral on social media, seemed like warning shots allegedly aimed at Kurmi. Later, Kurmi defected and joined BJP under chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. It seemed like a coincidence but even at the Assam-Mizoram border, Assam Police has erected its outpost and caused heightened tension. The question is whether Assam, now under chief minister Himanta is taking its glove off? However, what is important for Nagaland is to have its own road network without being under perpetual fear or threat. This can only be achieved if the ongoing Foothill Road linking Dimapur with Wokha-Mokokchng and Mon districts. It is easier to blame Assam for these problems but it is crucial to re-examine what Nagaland itself has been doing?

DailyDevotion Don’t Plan Without God Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass. —Psalm 37:5 Don’t plan without God. God seems to have a delightful way of upsetting the plans we have made, when we have not taken Him into account. We get ourselves into circumstances that were not chosen by God, and suddenly we realize that we have been making our plans without Him— that we have not even considered Him to be a vital, living factor in the planning of our lives. And yet the only thing that will keep us from even the possibility of worrying is to bring God in as the greatest factor in all of our planning. In spiritual issues it is customary for us to put God first, but we tend to think that it is inappropriate and unnecessary to put Him first in the practical, everyday issues of our lives. If we have the idea that we have to put on our “spiritual face” before we can come near to God, then we will never come near to Him. We must come as we are. Don’t plan with a concern for evil in mind. Does God really mean for us to plan without taking the evil around us into account? “Love…thinks no evil” (1 Corinthians 13:4-5). Love is not ignorant of the existence of evil, but it does not take it into account as a factor in planning. When we were apart from God, we did take evil into account, doing all of our planning with it in mind, and we tried to reason out all of our work from its standpoint. Don’t plan with a rainy day in mind. You cannot hoard things for a rainy day if you are truly trusting Christ. Jesus said, “Let not your heart be troubled…” (John 14:1). God will not keep your heart from being troubled. It is a command— “Let not….” To do it, continually pick yourself up, even if you fall a hundred and one times a day, until you get into the habit of putting God first and planning with Him in mind.

Post-mortem

Indian Education System Needs Remodelling W

hat is education? Answer to this question is multifaceted. Some say that it is the process of acquiring knowledge, skills, values and habits. Swami Vivekananda rightly said that, “Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in the men.” Mahatma Gandhi said that, “Education is the basic tool for the development of the consciousness and the reconstitution of society”. However, recent moves by our policy and decision makers try to belie this belief, as these moves seems aimed at taking India back to the old ages. Education is a journey, which gives the art of living, not just the livelihood. It makes us learn how to nurture our life and be more creative. Education makes us understand our conflicts. Thus, education is not merely learning of facts but is to train our mind to think. Education systems must provide opportunities to each and every individual to learn through experience and should help to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. However, in India the education system has evolved in a completely different manner. Instead of focussing on critical thinking, expressing new ideas and debating and writing critically on any issue, our students are forced to learn through the rote route. This concept of educa-

Country’s education system needs to be remodelled as per the requirements and aspirations of today’s world, instead of taking it back to the old ages.

tion goes back to the British colonialists, who wanted an army of clerks with basic understanding of the language and mathematics, to support their administrative system. However, this concept got roots in India and instead of focussing on developing mental and critical thinking faculties of the students and promoting research, our education system tuned into one where you amass degrees by cramming. Educational advance in India Education and the right to education is one of the fundamental rights of our country’s citizens. It is compulsory for children aged between 6-14 to have an education. Over the many years, especially after independence, India has managed to increase its literacy rates to nearly 75% by 2021, and some states even boast of 100% literacy rate. Most important focus in the recent decades has been on enhancing infrastructure, incentivising enrolments in schools by providing benefits such as midday meals etc. The private sector with government support has played a significant role in the expansion of the Indian education system and improving its quality. But it can also be credited with corporatising the education system, thus making education accessible

to a privilege few. In the research domain, Indialags behind many countries. Our universities and colleges lack a multidisciplinary approach to stimulate enquiry-based research skills. Absence of a proper framework for developing industry linkages with academia to promote research, further limits the faculty and students to work in this area. We can perceive that most measures are more on paper with no tangible results evident. In 2004, the then UPA government had imposed an Educational Cess of 2% on every transaction in the country. In a three year period this cess generated 32,000 crore rupees. But how this amount was used, nobody knows and if one asks then vague answers are given. In fact if this amount hadbeen used prudently, we would have a well-equipped and wellstaffed middle-level school functioning in every village of the country. Similarly, for the last ten years, every taxpayer is bound to pay a 1.5% education cess on his total income tax. Where this money goes, nobody knows. Tinkering with school syllabus Last year, in a completely uncalled for move, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)

revised its syllabus for students of Classes 9th to 12th in the name of handling the stressful situation of teachers and students in view of the continuing Covid19 pandemic, and in the name of rationalising the syllabus. Some of the important chapters that have been deleted include: Federalism, citizenship, nationalism and secularism from class 11th political science subject besides India’s foreign relations with neighbouring countries and citizenship, besides Social and New Social Movements chapter in India from class 12th political science paper. Demonetisation from class 12th Business Studies paper. Colonialism and the countryside colonial cities and understanding partition from class 12th History subject have been deleted. The irrational exclusions smacks of a political tone, aimed at keeping a large and young part of the population unaware of these issues. We should not forget that depriving the young generation of its right to increase its knowledge base is not only authoritarian but it might also boomerang. Most of the deleted topics form the foundation of democratic societies and students need to learn about these to enhance their knowledge base.

National Education Policy 2019 and 2020 The national educational policy came into force in the year 1968 to make education accessible to masses. It was aimed to strengthen national integration through a unified culture of learning. Since then constant measures have been taken to reform the Indian education system to provide better education services in the country, the latest being the National Education Policy (NEP) 2019 and 2020. However, if we analyse critically the NEP 2019 and 2020, the overall intent and decision maker’s mindset, in tandem with the moves taken last year, will be clearer. A critical study of the 484-page NEP 2019 reveals an issue deserving of wider, more heated debate. The words “secular” or “secularism” are not found anywhere in the NEP 2019. Though a clear reference to secular education was vital to be seen as the base for these ambitious reform proposals. The absence of the word “secular” in the NEP 2019 becomes all the more pronounced when seen in contrast to the earlier policies of mentioning secularism as a core Indian value for the Indian education. The omission of the words “secular” and “secularism” in the NEP 2019 is ominous,

along with the frequent affirmation of its aim of inculcating constitutional values in the education system, making it doubly odd. The NEP 2019 was launched last in its new avatar as NEP 2020, but many of the contentitious isssues still remain. In contemporary India, which has seen a sharp rise in caste and religious violence, the curriculum and teaching methods in Indian classrooms clearly have a key role to play in making caste and religious prejudices in society irrelevant and out of times. The challenge is to find fresh and creative ways of making young minds grasp these difficult contemporary social realities. You have to understand that you can’t hide history by giving it a new twist. Even in countries like the UK there are demands to teach the medieval history to the school students again. If you feel that by hiding the truth on your controversial decisions you’ll be able to befool people or hide your misjudgements then you are wrong, as the history will ultimately judge you, whether you like it or not. the way these projects have been executed. Most team members’ are not physically present in the office. Work goes on most through virtual meetings, collaborating through digital tools like VC rooms, e-Office, Open Forge, E-mail and instant messaging apps. Almost 300-plus team members from 50-plus cities, towns, and villages collaborate virtually to deliver projects on time and with quality. There are project-wise breakout rooms. The day begins with team meetings to review work done and tasks on hand and members then move to their breakout rooms after the mandatory video attendance. These virtual rooms function just like adjoining rooms in a physical office. One can seamlessly move from one room to the other without needing to click any link or login again. VPN is used as and when needed to securely access e-office and data center environments. There are breakout rooms for meetings and conferences also. There is also a cafeteria room where team members can have lunch together in a relaxed atmosphere. There is also a water-cooler point where senior management is not allowed and that provides a convenient outlet for stress-venting. In such a remote working environment, productivity has gone up by almost 30 per cent. Work from Anywhere has significant savings for everyone. Team members save

on commute time and they can add almost 1-2 hours in daily work time. The number of people taking leave has gone down Work from Home has really helped female employees continuing their work without the need to take time off due to domestic responsibilities. We have team members who delayed their entitled maternity leave as they could manage work and their health working remotely. It also helped in savings as many team members terminated their lease rentals and moved to their villages and family homes and continued working. This shift in work culture has many unseen benefits also. One has realised it is possible to hire good quality resources at very reasonable costs since it obviates the need for relocation. Remote working is also having an impact on Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities as more companies resort to WFH and remote working. This is resulting in more disposable incomes in these cities and will result in growth in the services sector in these areas and the creation of more jobs. Digital India and the new age working models have the potential to not only transforming India through digital inclusion and citizen empowerment but will also result in more equitable growth. Auto drivers flouting SOPs

Sir,

Autos have been allowed to ply throughout the roads of Dimapur on the grounds that they follow necessary measures to curb the Covid crisis. However, a lot of these drivers have been seen flouting the rules and regulations. Most of these drivers are seen with masks on their chin and the transparent partition sheet being lifted. Yes, I do agree that the Dimapur weather makes it unbearable to wear masks but none of us want to die either. Therefore, I request everyone to obey the rules. Now is not the time to be careless and act according to our own thoughts. There is a reason why the SOP exists hence, follow it without failure. Apex court takes strict view on lawmakers’ unruly behaviour the public prosecutor, and not be the state government. “State cannot decide if it is to be withdrawn or not. It’s only the prerogative of the public prosecutor,” it noted. As Kumar requested another date in the matter, the bench said that it will keep the matter for next week, telling him: “Until then, if you want to file any additional documents, please do.” After hearing arguments, the bench posted the matter for further hearing on July 15. The Kerala government had moved the Supreme Court seeking its nod to withdraw cases against CPI-M leaders, including now Education Minister V. Sivankutty, for vandalism in the state Assembly in 2015, when the current ruling party was in the Opposition.

NEW DELHI, JUL 5 (PTI): The Congress on Monday asserted that the government has no option but to order a JPC probe into the allegations of corruption in the purchase of Rafale fighter jets and questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence even 48 hours after an investigation in France was ordered into the deal. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said tr uth cannot be silenced while former defence minister A K Antony said the Modi government cannot escape accountability by keeping mum and alleged that it points towards a “malintent to hush up” alleged corruption in the deal. “Truth can’t be silenced. Unlike ‘Modia’,” Gandhi tweeted, using the hashtag “RafaleScam”. He also shared a video of a journalist of French

media firm Mediapart who claimed that the then French president Francois Hollande had said that the Indian government had proposed Anil Ambani’s Reliance group as a partner of Dassault in the deal. Antony alleged that “prima facie corruption in the Rafale deal is now apparent”, as the French Public Prosecution Services has now appointed a judge to investigate “corruption, influence peddling and brazen favouritism” in the 36-aircraft Rafale deal. “The intriguing silence of the Modi Government points towards mal-intent to hush up the corruption. The refusal of the BJP Government to probe and punish the guilty is even more astonishing, pointing towards a concerted effort to bury the scam,” the former defence minister said.

NEW DELHI, JUL 5 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court on Monday said it was “amazing” and “shocking” that people are still being booked under Section 66A of the Information Technology Act, which was scrapped by the apex court in 2015. A bench of Justices R.F. Nariman, K.M. Joseph and B.R. Gavai issued notice to the Centre on an application filed by the NGO Peoples Union For Civil Liberties (PUCL). “Amazing. What is going on is terrible,” Bar and Bench quoted Justice Nariman as saying. “Don’t you think this is amazing and shocking? Shreya Singhal judgement is of 2015. It’s really shocking,” the bench told senior advocate Sanjay Parikh, appearing for PUCL. Parikh said that despite express directions of the court in 2019 that all state governments should sensitise police personnel about the March 24, 2015 judgement, thousands of cases have been registered under the section. The bench said, “Yes, we have seen those figures. Don’t worry we will do something.” Parikh said there has to be some kind of method to handle the matter as people are suffering.

Justice Chandrachud queried further: “What is the larger public interest in shielding an MLA who created a ruckus while a financial bill was being laid?” He emphasised that the presentation of the Finance Bill is of utmost importance. Kumar argued the Kerala High Court had culled out and taken minority views in two cases. As the bench responded that the lawmakers obstructed the budget which was being laid down in the Assembly, Kumar said “Yes. But he was suspended too” and cited two judgments in defence. The bench observed that the decision to withdraw the case is taken by

MUMBAI, JUL 5 (PTI): Twelve BJP MLAs were suspended from the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for one year after the state government accused them of “misbehaving” with presiding officer Bhaskar Jadhav in the Speaker’s chamber on Monday. Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis termed the allegation as false and said Jadhav’s account of the incident was “one-sided”. H o w e v e r, Ja d h av sought a probe into the allegation that some Shiv Sena members and he himself made uncharitable remarks, and said he was ready to face any punishment if it was proven true. The motion to suspend the MLAs was moved by state Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anil Parab and passed by a voice vote. The 12 suspended members are- Sanjay Kute, Ashish Shelar, Abhimanyu

CBI arrests ex-Railways official, recovers Rs 2.75 cr, 23 kg gold

NEW DELHI, JUL 5 (IANS): CBI said on Monday that it has arrested A.K. Kathpal, the former Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer of Indian Railways earlier posted at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), in an alleged graft case and recovered Rs 2.75 crore in cash and 23 kg gold during searches at nine locations. A CBI spokesperson said that Kathpal, a 1984 batch IRSME officer who was earlier posted at the ICF Perambur in Chennai, has been arrested on charges of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 50 lakh. The official said that CBI had registered a case against Kathpal, who retired in March this year, and

others. CBI spokesperson said that it was further alleged that Kathpal during the period from February 2019 to March 31, 2021, the date of his retirement, had collected bribe from the director of a private firm and others and used the services of Hansa Venugopal, Director of Universal Engineering Chennai Pvt Ltd, as a conduit for collecting bribe on his behalf and also as a custodian for keeping the alleged illegal gratification of Rs 5.89 crore received on his behalf. The spokesperson said that Kathpal was caught by the CBI while demanding and accepting an amount of Rs 50 lakh from the private persons.

position benches, because we exposed the government’s falsehood on the OBC quota in local bodies,” Fadnavis said. He said the BJP members had not abused the presiding officer. “It was Shiv Sena MLAs who used abusive words. I brought our MLAs out of the Speaker’s chamber,” Fadnavis said. Ashish Shelar apologised and the matter ended, the former CM said, claiming that what Jadhav said was a “one-sided” account. Earlier, NCP leader

and minister Nawab Malik accused the BJP members of misbehaving with Bhaskar Jadhav and the state Assembly was adjourned four times over the issue. The House was initially adjourned for 10 minutes after Jadhav put to vote the resolution urging the Centre to provide 2011 census data to enable the State Backward Class Commission to prepare an empirical data of the OBC population, in a bid to restore political reservations for its members in local bodies. Some BJP members, including Girish Mahajan and Sanjay Kute, climbed the Speaker’s podium and argued with the Chair. Later, after the House reassembled, minister Nawab Malik and Shiv Sena member Sunil Prabhu demanded that action be taken against the opposition members for their behaviour with Jadhav. “What happened in your chamber is not right,” Malik said addressing Deputy Speaker Narhari Zirwal. The Deputy Speaker then adjourned the House for 15 minutes.

DIMAPUR, JUL 5 (NPN): In response to All India Cong ress Committee’s (AICC) call, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) will take part in the nationwide peaceful protest against hike in fuel prices from July 7 to 17. Announcing this in a press release, NPCC president K Therie said in view of Covid-19 SOPs, peaceful protest would held through social media, posters, banners and stickers appealing to the government to roll back excise duty, VAT and Covid-cess. Therie therefore appealed to civil society organisations, chambers of commerce, trade unions, associations and well-wishers to co-operate and support the protest. He said a signature campaign will be carried and the signed letter demanding rollback of prices and a memo will be submitted to the governor for constituting an independent price commission and high powered committee to streamline fees, donation, contribution and extortions. Therie pointed out that excise duty increased by 307%, State VAT by 68%, LPG price by over 100% and super kerosene (SK) oil from Rs15 to Rs39 per litre be-

tween 2014 and 2021, even as the State government introduced Covid cess. Alleging that the increase in petrol, diesel, LPG and SK oil prices had hit the economy, he demanded that the government must roll back the prices. He said the situation was going from bad to worse with the pandemic and lockdown. Even as unemployment was at its peak, he pointed out that people had no option as banks and financial institutions were unwilling to implement Government of India’s policy on collateral-free loans for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). He accused the State government of refusing the implementation of SARFAESI Act and nondeclaration of cadastral areas. Alleging that the government had no control over prices, the NPCC chief suspected that the former did not even read the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 and its amendments that were impacting prices. He called for enforcing the Society Registration Act, 1860 as hundreds of societies were collecting fees, tax, etc, adding to the overall prices of materials in Nagaland.

NH, GNF decry extension of ‘disturbed area’ in Nagaland (From p-1) Mentioning that children and students were no exception in the eye of Indian Army, the hoho alleged that school-going students were mercilessly shot dead and innocent students and public tortured by Assam Rifles. The hoho said it strongly felt that there was peaceful atmosphere in Naga areas as of now and any policy that harmed the atmosphere of trust and confidence should be avoided. It, therefore, demanded that AFSPA must be summarily repealed from “our” land. NH also urged GoI to make its position clear on Indo-Naga political issue instead of “orchestrating its

devilish policies against the Naga people”. GNF: Meanwhile, terming it an affront to modern civilised nations and rule of law, GNF too expressed concern over the latest extension of AFSPA in Nagaland by the Centre. According to the forum, the Act was not only anti-democratic, but overrode the legal recourse of the people of Nagaland for human rights violations by Indian Army and invested on military personnel and the State governor with extra-judicial powers. It alleged that the Army and governor were above the laws of land under AFSPA, Terming AFSPA as modern Indian version of

the most extreme repressive tool from the colonial era, GNF said it was a shameful stain on postcolonial India and hence demanded its immediate and permanent repeal from Naga homelands. Noting that the Indian government had again extended AFSPA by overriding the normal rule of law and empowering the military and the governor with extra-judicial powers, the forum accused the governor, who was also the Interlocutor in the IndoNaga peace talks, of working against the principle of the Framework Agreement and creating further division among the Nagas. GNF said it believed that immediate and permanent removal of AFSPA was

imagery posted on social media concludes. The tally come from a open-source investigative report published at the Oryx blog by Stijn Mitzer and Joost Oliemans. The continuously updated tally has catalogued hundreds of photos posted online by the Taliban of destroyed or captured Afghan military equipment. As of the evening of June 30, the study found evidence of 715 light vehicles falling into Taliban hands, with another 65 destroyed. Obviously, there are likely many more lost vehicles that gave gone

uncounted due to not being recorded in photos or videos. For context, in 2018 the Afghan armed forces operated 26,000 vehicles including 13,000 Humvees of various marks, while Mitzer writes that a total of 25,000 Humvees have been transferred to Afghanistan by 2021. During periods of intensified fighting, the Afghan government typically lost 100 Humvees a week, the report said. If the Taliban can source the necessary fuel, its growing vehicle inventory could improve the group’s operational mobil-

ity, ie. its ability to mass forces across Afghanistan. The vehicles may also serve as carriers for heavy support weapons such as mortars, heavy machine guns and recoilless rifles. The Taliban has also used captured Humvees to infiltrate government perimeters to mount deadly suicide bombings, the report said. Armoured vehicles losses include a handful of old M113 APCs and Soviet tanks, but also 27 fifteen-ton M1117 armoured cars armed with a machine guns and Mark 19 automatic grenade-launchers. As for artillery, alongside 13 shorter-range mortars, the Taliban notably captured 17 122-millimeter D-30 towed howitzers, the equivalent of an artillery battalion. The Cold War howitzers aren’t hi-tech weapons but they remain deadly and can bombard targets up to 9.6 miles away with conventional shells, a capability likely to be exploited in an urban siege scenario.

‘Sending me to jail during Covid same as death sentence’ JOHANNESBURG, JUL 5 (PTI): Jacob Zuma, the former president of South Africa, who is currently facing a 15-month prison sentence for contempt of court, said on Sunday that sending him to jail amid the prevailing coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic at his age would be equivalent to a death sentence, news agency PTI reported. “Sending me to jail during the height of a pandemic at my age is the same as sentencing me to death. The death sentence was declared unconstitutional in South Africa in 1995,” Zuma, 79, said while addressing a press briefing at his homestead in Nkandla. New post-infection treatment for Covid identified

KABUL, JUL 5 (IANS): A total of 15 Taliban militants were killed in airstrikes as the fighters have been mobilised to overrun Kunduz city, capital of Afghanistan’s northern Kunduz province, an army spokesman said on Monday. Acting on a tip-off, warplanes from the Afghan government forces targeted a Taliban gathering outside Kunduz city early Monday, killing 15 insurgents on the spot, spokesman Abdul Hadi Nazari said. A number of arms and ammunitions of the militants were also destroyed during the raids, Xinhua news agency reported citing the spokesman as saying. Taliban militants, who have captured five out of nine districts of the beleaguered Kunduz province and have been attempting to occupy the provincial capital Kunduz city, have yet to make comment on the airstrikes.

“A f t e r C OV I D - 1 9 emerged, many research groups reported that this inhibitor is also effective against the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, and many are currently pursuing the development of protease inhibitors as a treatment,” Kim said. The research team modified GC376 using a tool called deuteration to test its efficacy against SARS-CoV-2. Treatment with a deuterated variant starting at 24 hours post-infection resulted in significantly increased survival of mice compared

to untreated mice, the researchers said. The results suggest that deuterated variants have excellent potential as antiviral agents against SARS-CoV-2, they said. “Treating SARS-CoV-2infected mice with deuterated GC376 significantly improved survival, viral replication in lungs and weight losses, which shows the efficacy of the antiviral compound,” said KyeongOk Chang, professor at Kansas State University.

CONDEMNATION We, the Eastern Nagaland Women Organisation, strongly condemns the 20th June, Aboi-Mon District incident, wherein two minor girls were misguided by six boys who sexually assaulted and raped one girl while one escaped. Such barbaric acts in the society and community must be condemned at every level. The ENWO also urged the law enforcing agencies not to leave any stone unturned and expedite the case to bring to light the real age of the culprits as they hide in safety of the juvenile category as per their adhaar. ENWO reiterates that the date of birth for the culprits should not be limited to adhaar alone but the agencies must refer to other documents including the church birth registration record which shows their actual birth date. Authentication must be done to ascertain the facts at every level. Kind cooperation is highly appreciated. Sd/LUMTILA ANAR General Secretary

Taliban captures 700 trucks, Humvees from Afghan forces

KABUL/NEW DELHI, JUL 5 (AGENCIES): Taliban has captured a staggering 700 trucks and Humvees from the Afghan security forces as well as dozens of armoured vehicles and artillery systems in June, Forbes reported. Also, more than 1,000 Afghan troops fled into neighbouring Tajikistan in the early hours of Monday after clashes with the Taliban, the Central Asian country’s national security committee said. The shocking numbers reflect that local defence forces in some districts are evaporating in the face of the Taliban pressure, sometimes without a fight, due in part to the perception that the government is doomed due to the imminent US withdrawal from Afghanistan later this year. And that in turn implies huge volumes of military equipment donated or sold to Afghanistan to help it fight the Taliban may instead continue pouring into that very group’s hands, an investigation of

IPL with 2 more teams may send FTP for a toss Spain, Italy set for Euro 2020 semifinal

NEW DELHI, JUL 5 (IANS): The Indian cricket board’s plan to accommodate two more franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL) from 2022 season is likely to leave cricket boards around the world worried as an increase in number of teams will mean the tournament will be extended by 10-15 days to accommodate more matches. The extended phase will overlap with Future Tours Programme (FTP). The International Cricket Council (ICC) has no official window for the IPL which means that teams playing series during IPL dates either have to make do without their IPL-bound players or they have to plan their series outside the IPL schedule. “A lot of series are lined up in March and June 2022, the months in which the tournament (normally played across April and May) could be extended to in case of increase in the number of matches. That has to be taken into consideration,” said a former member of the IPL Govern-

ing Council to IANS. The ICC, which has no dedicated window for the IPL since it is a domestic event, confirmed to IANS on Monday that the upcoming meeting of its Board on July 15 will not have the extended IPL on its agenda. It means that the boards will have to sort it out on their own. India and eight other countries, that send players to IPL, will be playing in the months of March, May and June next year as per the ICC’s 2018-2023 FTP. Australia, Bangladesh, South Africa, India, New Zealand and Afghanistan are scheduled to play international cricket in March 2022 while England and

New Zealand are expected to play cricket in May, 2022. Australia, Bangladesh, New Zealand, India and England are scheduled to play in June and July. Although Pakistan, Netherlands, Ireland and Zimbabwe are also scheduled to play international cricket during the phase, their players don’t feature in IPL. Pakistan players are barred while other three teams’ players don’t generally find takers from IPL franchises. The current FTP schedule has been made till March, 2023. The 50-over World Cup will be held in India in the months of February-March. It means

Mary Kom, Manpreet picked flag bearers for Tokyo Olympics New Delhi, Jul 5 (PTI): Celebrated boxer M C Mary Kom and men’s hockey team skipper Manpreet Singh will be the country’s flag bearers at the opening ceremony of Tokyo Olympics, the Indian Olympic Association announced on Monday. One of India’s biggest medal hopes, wrestler Bajrang Punia, will be the flag bearer at the closing ceremony on August 8. The IOA has communicated the decision in this regard to the organising committee of the Tokyo Games. In a first, India is having two flag-bearers -- one male and one female -at the upcoming Tokyo Games to ensure “gender parity”. This was recently informed by IOA chief chief Narinder Batra. “It would be a huge huge moment for me given that it is my last Olympics. Who knows I might even get emotionally over-

It would be added motivation for me. I promise to do my best for a medal,” the six-time world champion added. The country’s lone individual Olympic goldmedallist Abhinav Bindra was the flag bearer at the

opening ceremony of the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. “This is amazing, and I am speechless. I think it’s a huge honour to be named the Flag Bearer for the opening ceremony alongside the incredible Mary Kom,” Manpreet was quoted as saying in a Hockey India release. “I have always been inspired by her journey in boxing and personally for me, this is a big moment in my career, and it is also a huge moment for hockey.

Will be fit in time for IPL but unsure about captaincy: Iyer Mumbai, Jul 5 (PTI): Shreyas Iyer reckons he will be fit to return for the second part of the Indian Premier League but the India batsman is not sure about getting his captaincy back, saying that decision lies in the hands of Delhi Capitals owners. The 26-year-old was ruled out of the IPL following a left shoulder injury he sustained during the series against England. In Iyer’s absence, flamboyant wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant led the Capitals, who were perched atop the points table when the league was suspended due to multiple COVID-19 cases in its bio-bubble. “My shoulder, I think the healing process is done. Now it’s the last stage of achieving strength and range. “So that’s going to take about a month, and the training is obviously going on. Other than that, I feel, I will be there in the IPL,” Iyer said while speaking on ‘The Grade Cricketer’ Podcast.

Wimbledon: Djokovic rolls into quarterfinals Barty survives Krejcikova test to reach quarters

Novak Djokovic

L O N D O N , J UL 5 (AGENCIES/IANS): It was business as usual for top seed Novak Djokovic as the Serbian dismantled the challenge of Chile’s Cristian Garin with a 6-2 6-4 6-2 victory to advance to the last eight of Wimbledon and keep his title defence intact at the grasscourt major. The world number one, who won the last two men’s singles titles on the manicured grass at the All England Club, will play his 50th Grand Slam quarterfinal when he next faces either Russian fifth seed Andrey Rublev or Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics. The 25-year-old Garin, seeded 17th, had never played Djokovic on grass before and soon realised he did not have the resources to trouble the Serbian on a

sun-baked Centre Court. Djokovic won the first eight points of the match and never took his foot off the pedal during the one hour 48 minutes, dominating from the baseline and the net against the Chilean. He lost only 13 points on his own serve and broke his opponent five times to stay on course for a 20th Grand Slam title that would tie him with great rivals Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal for the most major men’s titles. Meanwhile, Matteo Berrettini stepped up his bid to join a select band of players to complete the Queen’s Club-Wimbledon double in the same year with a fluent 6-4 6-3 6-1 fourth round win over All England Club debutant Ilya Ivashka on Monday.

The serve was not at full throttle and the strokes were often rather wayward, but that did not stop Ash Barty from reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time with a 7-5 6-3 win over French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova on Monday. Long tipped as a future Wimbledon champion, the Australian world No. 1 has had to wait nine long years since making her main draw debut in 2012 to finally put herself in the last-eight mix at the grasscourt major. Facing an opponent who until last Tuesday had never played a main draw singles match on turf, Barty had been expected to easily make her greater grasscourt pedigree count. She will next face either British wildcard Emma

Second seed Aryna Sabalenka battled past a determined Elena Rybakina 6-3 4-6 6-3 in the Wimbledon fourth round on Monday to reach the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career. Meanwjile, Tunisian 21st seed Ons Jabeur produced a stunning display to overcome Polish seventh seed Iga Swiatek and secure her first Wimbledon quarter-final. The victory sees Jabeur, 26, become the first Arab woman to reach the last eight at the All England Club. Jabeur will meet second seed Aryna Sabalenka next after the Belarusian beat Kazakh 18th seed Elena Rybakina.

MADRID, JUL 5 (IANS): Spain’s football team flew to London on Monday ahead of their European Championship semifinal against Italy on Tuesday night. The need to protect the playing surface at Wembley Stadium meant the Spanish, who enjoyed a day off on Sunday, held their final training session ahead of the game at the familiar headquarters of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) in Madrid, reports Xinhua. Spain have reached the last-four after testing the nerves of their fans (and no doubt coach Luis Enrique) as they needed extra-time to beat Croatia 5-3 in the last 16, while their quarterfinal against Switzerland went to a penalty shootout in which goalkeeper Unai Simon was the hero. Consecutive extratimes mean Spain have played an hour more than Italy over their last two games and the general feeling is that Luis Enrique’s players will need a good night in front of the goal if they are to get past the

Italians. Nevertheless, Spain have lost just two of their last 14 meetings against Italy and they still remember their quarterfinal win against Italy on way to the 2008 European Championship title, which truly marked their arrival as a top team and started a run of success which saw them win the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, where they thrashed Italy 4-0 in the final. However, the current Italian side is very different from the ultra-defensive teams of the past, with Roberto Mancini building

a team based on pace in attack and drive in midfield. He has lost left-back Leonardo Spinazzola to injury, whose pace down the flank will be missed, although Ciro Immobile, Lorenzo Insigne and Nicola Barella all pose massive threats to a Spain side that always look as if they have a defensive error in them. Pablo Sarabia is likely to miss out for Spain with a muscle problem, with Dani Olmo or Thiago Alcantara stepping in for a game where Spain will hope their control of midfield, rather than tired legs, will be the key factor.

Verstappen in dominant F1 Austrian GP win SPIELBERG (AUSTRIA), JUL 5 (IANS): Red Bull’s Max Verstappen took a firm grip on the 2021 Formula One world championship with a dominant win in the Austrian Grand Prix, as title rival Lewis Hamilton could only finish fourth after struggling with a damaged car. In F1’s second successive Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, Verstappen lived up to his pre-race billing as the hot favorite, leading all the way from pole position and collecting the fastest lap on way to his third victory in succession on Sunday, reports Xinhua. “Incredible, to be honest. The car was on rails,” said Verstappen, who now has a championship lead of 32 points over Hamilton. “Every tyre set we put on it was really enjoyable to drive. I’m a bit amazed how today went; I didn’t expect it to be like this.” Verstappen’s main title rival Hamilton had been running second but dropped to fourth by the end after complaining of

Stafanie hattrick in big WI win over Pak NORTH SOUND (ANTIGUA), JUL 5 (IANS): West Indies women’s team skipper Stafanie Taylor gave a commanding performance as she led her team to a sixwicket win over Pakistan women in the third T20 International to make a clean sweep of the series at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground here. Stafanie took a hattrick in the final over to end with 4/17 as Pakistan were bundled out for 102 in 19.4 overs. She then top-scored with 43 not out on Sunday as the home team strolled to 106/4 off 19.1 overs to make it three wins in a row. Stafanie became the second West Indian woman to take a hattrick at the international level when she removed tailenders Fatima Sana (1), Diana Baig (5) and Anam Amin (0). The previous hattrick for West Indies was by Anisa Mohammed against South Africa in 2018. Anisa also bowled well to end with figures of 3/24 off her four overs. When the West Indies batted, Stafanie added 41 for the fourth wicket with Chadean Nation (20) and then had an unbroken fifthwicket stand of 48 with lefthander Kycia Knight, who ended on 24 not out.

damage to his Mercedes, likely caused by riding his car up onto the Red Bull Ring’s sausage kerbs. Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas took second place ahead of the McLaren of Lando Norris, who had an excellent weekend and might have finished second had he not been harshly given a five-second pen-

alty for forcing Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez off track early in the race. Carlos Sainz took a solid fifth for Ferrari ahead of Perez, who had a scrappy race in which he himself was slapped with two fivesecond penalties for his involvement in separate incidents with Sainz’s teammate Charles Leclerc.

Norris’ teammate Daniel Ricciardo recovered from a poor qualifying session to take seventh, just ahead of an unhappy Leclerc and the AlphaTauri of Pierre Gasly, while Fernando Alonso rounded out the points’ positions in his Alpine. The only driver to fail to see the chequered flag was Alonso’s teammate Esteban Ocon, who retired on lap 1 after contact with Antonio Giovinazzi’s Alfa Romeo to compound a miserable weekend for the Frenchman. Verstappen’s fifth win of the season sees him extend his lead in the drivers’ championship with 182 points. Hamilton remains second on 150 points, with Perez third on 104. In the constructors’ standings, Red Bull stay top with 286 points. Mercedes stay second with 242, and McLaren are third on 141 points. The 10th round of the 2021 F1 season is the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 18.

Spurs want captain Kane to stay, says director Paratici

L O N D O N , J UL 5 (AGENCIES): Tottenham Hotspur want captain Harry Kane to stay at the club, their new managing director of football Fabio Paratici said, as speculation about the striker’s future continues. Kane, who is valued at over 100 million pounds ($138.26 million), is currently at the European Championship with England, having scored three goals to lead them to the semi-finals where they will play Denmark at Wembley on Wednesday. The 27-year-old has a contract with Spurs until 2024, but British media said he is keen to leave in order to win major trophies and there are no shortage of interested parties. “Keeping him is not just my goal, it’s our goal as a club,” Paratici, who joined Tottenham last month, told Sky Sports. “I can’t wait to watch him play live. .. Right now, he’s one of the best strikers in the world. He’s a complete player, really special”. “I haven’t heard from him yet because I don’t want to bother the players who are busy at the Euros, it doesn’t seem fair to me. They’re focused on their

own goals with their national teams.” Tottenham finished seventh in the Premier League last season under interim manager Ryan Mason after Jose Mourinho was sacked. They will host champions Manchester City in their opening game of the 2021-22 campaign on Aug. 15. They have hired former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Nuno Espirito

Santo as their new manager. Spurs Chairman Daniel Levy said last month that while he shared Kane’s frustration over the lack of trophies he would do what is right for the club in the transfer market. “There is a market out there. What we want and what somebody else wants isn’t always possible to achieve,” he said. “We’ll do whatever is right for the club.”
