IMPHAL, JUN 5: As attacks and counter attacks continued in the strife-torn Manipur, three civilians were killed and five others were injured on Monday.

As per reports, the suspected militants fired towards a row of civilian homes in Kangchup, in Imphal West bordering Kangpokpi district early Monday morning, around 5 a.m. In the attack, at least three persons died on the spot and four others suffered injuries. Police retrieved the dead bodies only in the afternoon after security forces flushed out the suspected militants allegedly camping on top of the hills nearby. The bodies were transferred to RIMS morgue.

A group of people including villagers of Kangchup and neighbouring villages, who were camping to protect the village, also retaliated by firing.

Internet ban extended till June 10: Amid continuing sporadic incidents of violence, the Manipur government on Monday extended the suspension of Internet services for the

seventh time till June 10 to avert the spread of rumours and videos, photos, and messages, which might affect the law and order situation.

Home Commissioner H. Gyan Prakash, in a fresh notification extending the suspension of Internet services till June 10, said that the DGP Manipur, reported that there are still reports of incidents like arson of houses and premises.

Meanwhile, a fresh petition has been filed in the Supreme Court against the suspension of internet services in the violence-hit state of Manipur since May 3.

LAKHIMPUR, JUN 5 (PTI): Two persons died and three others went missing after alleged firing along the Arunachal Pradesh border in Assam’s Dhemaji district on Monday, police said.

Locals had arranged a plantation drive at the interstate border area on the occasion of World Environment Day, SP Ranjan Bhuyan said. Seven villagers had gone in advance to make arrangements in the morning.

They allegedly came under firing, in which one died on the spot. Three others sustained bullet injuries and were taken to the Dhemaji Civil Hospital, where one person died, he added.

Three others went missing and police were looking for them, Bhuyan said.

Locals alleged the involvement of miscreants from Arunachal Pradesh as there was a dispute over the interstate boundary in the area.

DIMAPUR, JUN 5 (NPN): As environmental issues like climate change, deforestation and pollution were affecting everyone in their daily lives, governor La Ganesan urged people to conserve environment and treat it as top priority to save the planet.

Speaking at a function held at Dr Imkongliba Ao Hall, Raj Bhavan, Kohima on Monday to commemorate the World Environment Day on the theme “Solution to Plastic pollution”, Ganesan reminded the citizens that the world’s action on plastic pollution was the need of the hour.

He said the world was overwhelmed by production of plastic and using it more than it could be recycled.

He pointed out that most of the plastic ended up in the environment, causing hazardous effects to humans, animals and nature.

Hence, he urged people to reduce the use of plastic in their daily lives and reuse as much as possible. He stressed that it was important to educate everyone around about the harmful effects of plastic and collectively eradicate plastic pollution.

The governor congratulated Kohima divisional forest officer (DFO) Raj Kumar M and his team for the initiative of “Clicktoplant.com”. He observed that it was an innovative green initiative that had

the potential in not just increasing tree cover in the country, but also in generating livelihood opportunities for the communities. He encouraged everyone to collectively make use of these green initiatives to free the world from plastic pollution.

Ganesan also launched the website Clicktoplant and unveiled “Nino” mascot. He also gave away prizes to winners of the oratorical contest for school students on the occasion.

NSF office vandalisation: High Court grants NIRF 2023: Patkai Christian College among top 200 colleges Infighting within NSCN (YA) GHQ ‘absolute pre-arrest bail’ to six NC members and CHQ members

DIMAPUR, JUN 5 (NPN): The Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench on Monday granted absolute pre-arrest bail to six persons (Naga Club functionaries) in connection with the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) office vandalisation case.

After hearing a batch anticipatory bail applications on Monday, the single-judge bench of Justice Kakheto Sema noted that the offence charged against the applicants were not heinous in nature, punishable with imprisonment for life or death, and that they had

also appeared before the investigating officer/police as ordered by the court on May 29 and were co-operating with the investigation by giving their statements.

Hence, upon consideration of the facts and circumstances of the case, the court ordered granting absolute pre-arrest bail to the applicants, subject to terms and conditions.

As per the terms and conditions, the applicants would have to make themselves available before the officer in-charge, North Police Station, Kohima and/or

the investigation officer of the case as and when summoned, should not tamper with evidence of the investigating agency or the prosecution witness in any manner whatsoever and should not indulge in the commission of the offence with which they were charged.

The court cautioned that violation of the conditions would lead to automatic cancellation of the bail. It also ruled that all other conditions imposed by the court’s May 29 order would continue to bind the applicants.

DIMAPUR, JUN 5 (NPN): Patkai Christian College (Autonomous) has been listed among the top 200 colleges in India as per the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings 2023 released by Ministry of Education on Monday.

PCC was the only college from Nagaland to be listed in the 151-200 band.

Senior Citizens Association of Nagaland president Dr Khanlo Magh and general secretary Dr R Rose Chakhesang in a press release said they strongly supported the immediate need to streamline and strictly implement Inner Line Permit (ILP) and implement

SCAN said they had submitted suggestions and recommendations to the RIIN Commission on September 13, 2019 which specified “All Nagas naturally originating from the geographical boundary of the State of Nagaland with the defined original attributes of indignity are the only people qualify as indigenous inhabitants.”

For “domicile inhabitants/permanent residents”, they mentioned that the State government notification of April 28, 1977 that specified “A person should

have settled permanently in Nagaland prior to 1-121963” should serve the purpose. They insisted that the place of registration as indigenous inhabitants should be made in their respective officially-recognised village and not in the place of residence.

They pointed out that the authority to authenticate claims of being indigenous/domicile should be left to all officially recognised village councils by the State government.

The signatories demanded that the office memorandum of June 11, 2012 should be strictly followed for any category of

adoption cases, insisting “children of the non-Naga father as well as non-Naga children adopted by Naga parents are not to be given Scheduled Tribe/Backward Tribe/Indigenous Certificates”.

DIMAPUR, JUN 5 (NPN): Nearly two months after Naga army personnel of the Myanmar based-Yung Augn-led NSCN (K) faction rebelled against the leadership of president Yung Aung citing “mal-administration system”, there are reports of exchange of fire between members of the group at CHQ and those at General Headquarters (GHQ).

Konyak Union Myanmar (KUM) informed that members of Yung Aung-led NSCN, who are stationed at Council headquarters (CHQ), Taka “forcefully” attacked GHQ members and started firing in Nyanching field on June 5, 2023 at around 3pm.

In a press release, KUM president PM Aman, KUM general secretary K Akham Honwang and ex-president of KUM SA Khotai there was no report of casualty till evening.

KUM, with its headquarters at Yenchung village, Lahe township, Sagaing division, Naga Self-Administered Zone (SAZ), informed that exchange of fire lasted for about an hour from 3-4pm.

KUM, on behalf of Eastern Konyak, has appealed to the NSCN (K) groups to maintain restraint and desist from fighting among Nagas. KUM also urged the NSCN (K) to listen to the voice of the people.

YLASA backs STPF ultimatum on H&FW DIMAPUR, JUN 5 (NPN): Yimkhiung Liberü Arihako Shamator Area (YLASA) has affirmed its support to the Shamator Town Public Forum (STPF)’s one-month ultimatum served on the health & family welfare (H&FW) department demanding the deployment of adequate manpower and medical facilities at community health centre (CHC) Shamator.

In a press release, YLASA vice president Tsushila and general secretary Kiulola expressed dismay that CHC Shamator had been neglected and

demanded immediate redressal of the grievances faced by public.

Accusing the department of showing “lackadaisical attitude”, the YLASA stated that the only CHC in the entire Shamator area had been neglected considerably. It said that required number of manpower and medical facilities have not been deployed.

In the light of the above, YLASA has urged the department to listen to the cry of poor patients of Shamator district and fulfil the urgent needs of the CHC Shamator.

DIMAPUR, JUN 5 (NPN): Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) on Monday named Sematilla Colony as the best performing Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (RRR) centre. Police Colony and Lengrijan Colony were adjudged as second and third positions.

The winner received cash award of Rs. 70,000 while the second and third received Rs. 60,000 and Rs. 50,000 respectively.

Certificates were also given out to all the 11 participating colonies.

The objective of the campaign was to establish RRR centres where citizens can contribute items like clothes, shoes, books, toys, newspapers and plastic excluding single-use plastic for reuse and recycling.

The campaign was launched by DMC under the theme ‘Meri Life Mera Swachh Shehar’ as per the

initiative of Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 (U) of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

DIMAPUR: District Health Society (DHS) Zunheboto launched Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight (IDCF) at Government Middle School, Old Town Zunheboto and across all health units in the district on June 5.

pointed out that this was yet another failed attempt by inimical elements to build hate against those at the forefront of preventing violence.

He alleged that a synergised malicious campaign by an unethical collusion of people, both internal and external, was being run against this battalion which had been at the forefront

in preventing incidents of large-scale arson and possible loss of human lives.

He said the perpetrators, having been prevented by troops on ground, had failed yet again on social media as well.

Pointing out that ever since clashes had erupted in Manipur, the army and Assam Rifles had been at the forefront in rescuing people across communities in an impartial manner, the PRO assured that both the forces would continue to work relentlessly till normalcy was restored and once again requested all sections of media to exercise greater than normal prudence in these trying times in Manipur.

AIZAWL, JUNE 5 (PTI): Assam Rifles and Mizoram police personnel arrested three persons and recovered a huge cache of ammunition in the state’s Lawngtlai district near Bangladesh border, an official of the paramilitary force said on Monday.

Acting on a tip-off that cadres of KukiChin National Army (KCNA), an insurgent outfit active in Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), had crossed the border with ammunition, the security forces conducted

an operation and seized it, the Assam Rifles PRO added. “In all, 1,008 rounds of 5.56 mm, 2 rounds of 9mm and one each round of UBGL40/46 mm and 38 spl ammunition were recovered during the operation on Sunday,” the official added.

Three persons identified as Joseph Lalnuntluang (48), Vanrothawna (58) and Dabibadah (75), all from Parva village in Lawngtlai district, were arrested, the official said.

S H I L LO N G, J U N 5 : The Meghalaya Cabinet is scheduled to meet Today to discuss the selection of the members of the expert committee to review the state job reservation policy of 1972.

Gover nor Phagu Chauhan had notified an expert committee to review the state job reservation policy which the opposition Voice of People Party (VPP) has been demanding.

As per the notification, the Expert Committee will consist of experts in constitutional law, economics, sociology, demographic studies and related fields, which shall be notified by the State government.

“The Expert Committee shall undertake a review of the State Reservation Policy by obtaining views from all stakeholders and by conducting field visits to all parts of the State,” reads the notification.

Moreover, sources said that the cabinet is likely to decide on the cut-off date from which the roster system would come into force.

There are indications that the State government

may go for prospective implementation of the roster from 2022, the year when the Meghalaya High Court passed the order.

Meghalaya had no roster system to implement the state reservation policy of 40:40 reserved seats shared between the Garo and Khasi-Jaintia communities.

The policy reserves 40 percent vacancies for Garos and another 40 percent for the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region. Five percent more is reserved for other minor tribes and the remaining is open category.

However, the decision to apply the compensatory roster system from the date the State reservation policy was enacted in 1972 has had a significant bearing on job seekers from the Khasi community as most of the jobs were given to the candidates from the Garo community.

However, the Meghalaya High Court on April 3, 2023 cleared the doubts over the retrospective narrative of the roster system.

The court said the cutoff date for the applicability of the roster system is a policy matter that is best left to the legislature and the executive of the State.

I TA NAG A R , J U N 5 (PTI): Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday said every ministry was equally important to him, and he would take care of whatever responsibility was assigned to him dedicatedly.

Asked by reporters here about the recent reshuffle of the Union Cabinet in which he was removed from the Law and Justice Ministry and assigned the Earth Sciences Ministry, Rijiju said he was ready to serve the Narendra Modi government in any capacity.

“For me, to become an MP is important. As every organ is important for the body, every department is important for the government. Earth sciences is a very big subject,” he said on the sidelines of the ‘Maha Jan Sampark Abhiyan’, which was launched on May 31 to highlight the achievements of the BJP-led government at the Centre over nine years.

Earlier in the day, he attended the signing of an agreement between the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Arunachal Pradesh’s Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies.

Kiren Rijiju At the event, he announced that three Doppler radar stations would be set up in the state soon.

“This will help in the enhancement of surface weather observations in the state. Also, weather forecasts with impact-based advisories will also be issued,” Rijiju said.

According to the agreement, both organisations would carry out joint research and development in the field of meteorology and its allied subjects, knowledge transfers and information sharing in areas of weather, extreme event monitoring and forecasting.

“Our target is that within a year we are going to install about 100 Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) and Automatic Raingauge Stations (ARS), so that every mountain,

river, village and town could record weather forecast which will help the farmers manifold,” the minister said, maintaining that there would be no dearth of funds.

Rijiju claimed that it was the policy of the Congress to not develop border areas on the pretext that if the infrastructure is created, China could come and transgress into India’s territory.

“However, in 2014, when I became the Minister of State for Home, this policy was reversed by the NDA government. I conceived two projects -- the Frontier Highway and the East-West Industrial Corridor. The prime minister without taking into account the economic consideration but considering the strategic value approved the two projects,” he said.

He said that to develop infrastructure in the border areas, the Centre recently approved a package of Rs 44,000 crore.

“Once completed, it would help safeguard the country’s borders with China and Myanmar, and control migration from border areas, besides improving tourism infrastructure,” he said.

IMPHAL, JUN 5: President of Zeliangrong Union (Assam-Manipur-Nagaland), Azang Rongmei on Monday said that communal harmony and peaceful co-existence can be restored through collective efforts of all sections of the society residing in the state of Manipur.

In an exclusive interview with DIPR on the prevailing situation in the state, Rongmei said that since time immemorial, people of all ethnic communities have resided together as brothers and sisters with love and care for one another in Manipur.

The same was disturbed after the ethnic clashes erupted from the evening of May 3 last due to some misunderstandings between the Meitei and Kuki communities.

During this unrest, many lives were lost and injured, many public and private properties were destroyed and the normal lives of all the people were highly affected, he said.

Media reports said that at least three people were burnt alive or beaten to death by a mob in Imphal West District. issues of displaced people from Manipur AIZAWL, JUN 5 (PTI): The Mizoram government has instituted a high-level committee headed by Home Minister Lalchamliana to deal with issues of internally displaced people (IDP) from strife-torn Manipur, an official said on Monday.

A total of 9,501 IDPs from Manipur have taken shelter in different parts of Mizoram since the eruption of ethnic violence in the neighbouring state early last month, according to the

Home Department.

The official said the committee was formed on Sunday as per the instruction of Chief Minister Zoramthanga.

Education Minister Lalchhandam Ralte has been appointed as the vice chairman of the committee, while Home Department Commissioner and Secretary H Lalengmawia is the

member secretary, he said.

The committee held a meeting on Monday, during which Lalchamliana informed the attendees that Mizoram is currently providing shelter to over 50,000 people from neighbouring Manipur, Myanmar and Bangladesh.

The meeting agreed to maintain proper profiling of IDPs from Manipur.

In his video message at a World Environment Day event here, Modi said for the protection of the world climate, it is important that all countries think, rising above vested interests.

“For a long time, the model of development in big and advanced countries was contradictory. In this developmental model, the thinking was that we first develop our country then we can think about the environment,” the prime minister said. “ Wi t h t h i s, t h e y achieved the goals of development, but the world’s environment had to pay the price for their development.

NEW DELHI, JUN 5 (PTI): The government on Monday asked airlines to devise a mechanism to ensure reasonable airfares amid a surge in air ticket prices, par ticularly on certain routes that were earlier served by Go First.

During an hourlong meeting of the airlines advisory group, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia shared his concerns about the steep rise in airfares on certain routes.

Airlines have been asked to self-monitor airfares on routes that have seen considerable rise in ticket prices, particularly those that were served by Go First earlier.

Go First stopped flying from May 3 and the

reduction of capacity due to the crisis at the budget airline has come at a time when peak domestic air travel period is round the corner.

A mechanism should be devised by airlines to ensure reasonable pricing within the high RBDs ( Re s e r va t i o n B o o k i n g Designator) and the same would be monitored by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the ministry said in a statement.

Airfares are deregulated under the current regulatory regime.

Besides, the ministry has said that during any calamity, airlines need to keep a tight check on the pricing of air tickets “in view of the humanitarian situation and monitor and

BHUBANESWAR, JUN 5 (PTI): Rejecting a CBI probe into the Balasore train accident, Odisha units of 12 political parties, including Congress and Left parties, on Monday demanded the formation of a Special Investigation Team and resignation of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to pave way for an impartial inquiry.

The parties, including Congress, CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML) Liberation, CPI(ML) Red Star, All India Forward Bloc, Samajwadi Party, RJD, NCP, RPI, AAP and Samata Kranti Dal, held a joint meeting here and passed a resolution stating that they rejected a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), accusing the central agency of “working at the behest of the BJP”.

They demanded that a court-monitored investigation by the central SIT be conducted into the case.

However, the ruling

BJD in Odisha welcomed the CBI probe and hoped that the “real culprit” behind the incident will be caught.

“There is no problem with a CBI probe. We want the real culprit to be nabbed,” senior BJD leader and Odisha minister Pramila Mallik said.

In another press conference, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Sarat Pattanayak also demanded Vaishnaw’s resignation, alleging the incident took place due to the Railway Ministry’s negligence.

The OPCC president also alleged that Vaishnaw was making contradictory statements about the train accident.

Stating that misleading utterances was not acceptable, Pattanayak also demanded jobs for at least one member of family of the deceased. Senior Congress leader Bijay Patnaik said Vaishnaw should resign as he is running the ministry “carelessly”.

Blame game in Manipur

I

n the aftermath of days since May 3 when Manipur shook and burned during the worst ever ethnic violence, the BJP government under N.Biren Singh did precious little to prevent the arson and killings. What the Biren Singh government only did was to issue a ‘shoot-at-sight’ order on May 4. Then on May 5, Article 355 was imposed in Manipur but what was strange is how this was communicated to the public. According to reports, an elected MLA from the BJP tweeted that Article 355 had been “implemented” in the state, which was an indication that it had been imposed. Following that, P.Doungel then DGP disclosed at a press conference on May 6 that Article 355 was imposed. There was no official communication from the union government but nevertheless, the public accepted and understood it as a done deal. After Article 355 was invoked in Manipur, the Union government assigned a security advisor to the state government. The centre rushed hundreds of army and para-military forces to Manipur but violence did not subside. Such a situation demanded Central government intervention under Article 356 on account of failure of the state government under Biren Singh to effectively maintain law and order.

This was a fit case for dismissal of the government and imposition of Artilcle 356 to prevent further violence. The ethnic violence in Manipur is a dangerous situation and for which the union government should have done what was needed to be done towards maintenance of law and order especially since the state is insurgency-hit and also shares 398 kms of the international border with Myanmar. The union government waited for over three weeks and did nothing till May 29 when union home minister Amit Shah visited Manipur for three days on a mission to restore peace in the strife-torn state. It was during Shah’s visit that the DGP of Manipur P.Doungel IPS(MA:87) became the scapegoat and shunted out on May 29, as OSD of the newly created post in the state home department. If Doungel had to be removed, the same yardstick should have been used on chief minister Biren Singh as he was responsible for the situation since he holds charge of the home portfolio. The Biren Singh government then appointed Manipur security adviser Rajiv Singh(TR:93) of Tripura cadre and current security adviser as the DGP Manipur for three years till 2026, instead of the next senior most IPS office Christopher Doungel.

When Biren Singh promised to restore peace and to let bygones be bygones he exposed his hypocrisy and anti-tribal feeling when he made DGP Doungel as the scapegoat by shunting him out on May 29 barely two weeks before superannuation on June 11. Rajiv Singh could have continued as security adviser and taken over as DGP on June 11. Doungel’s shunting also had a cascading effect on another tribal officer, Christopher Doungel, who would have taken over as DGP from P.Doungel and retire by 2025. Christopher Doungel will not be DGP since Singh’s term will end on 2026.In case Singh’s tenure is extended for another year, depending on date of birth, the next local IPS officer Laipheng Kailun may not get the chance to be DGP as he would retire by 2027. This act clearly unfortunately shows that the ethnic divide in Manipur has crossed the point of no return and perhaps the Centre by turning a blind eye for weeks, is also to be blamed.

When it seems that there is nothing and no one to help you, say to yourself, “But ‘The Lord is my helper’ this very moment, even in my present circumstance.” Are you learning to listen to God before you speak, or are you saying things and then trying to make God’s Word fit what you have said? Take hold of the Father’s assurance, and then say with strong courage, “I will not fear.” It does not matter what evil or wrong may be in our way, because “He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you….’ ” Human frailty is another thing that gets between God’s words of assurance and our own words and thoughts. When we realize how feeble we are in facing difficulties, the difficulties become like giants, we become like grasshoppers, and God seems to be nonexistent. But remember God’s assurance to us— “I will never…forsake you.” Have we learned to sing after hearing God’s keynote? Are we continually filled with enough courage to say, “The Lord is my helper,” or are we yielding to fear?

Had the Art 371(A) been nullified by FA of 2015?

T he MIP of NSCN(IM) issued an official statement which was published in local papers dated 27.5.2015 claiming that the Framework Agreement (FA) between the GoI and the NSCN(IM) signed on 3rd August, 2015 had nullified the 16-Point Agreement of 1960 and all the past agreements. The 16-Point agreement gave creation to Nagaland as a full fledged State with Art 371(A) incorporated in the Constitution of India. Quoting from the said statement “Thus, the Article 371(A) as inserted into the Part XX1 of the Indian Constitution in the year 1962 or 16-Point Agreement of 1960, no longer bears any political meaning as the historical Framework Agreement signed between the Nagas represented by NSCN and the Government of India on 3rd August 2015 has come into existence to nullify all the past acts of injustice to the Nagas and bring new solution/agreement that is honorable and acceptable.”

Unquote.

Whereas, to understand the contention of the quoted statement as above, I have to read with the last two paragraphs of the Framework Agreement and I quote

“Both sides have understood each other’s respective positions and are cognizant of the universal principle that in a democracy sovereignty lies with the people. Accordingly, the Government of India and the NSCN, respecting people’s wishes for sharing the sovereign power as defined in the competencies, reached an agreement on the 3rd August, 2015 as an honorable solution. It is a matter of great satisfaction that dialogue between the Government of India and the NSCN has successfully concluded and we are confident, it will provide for an enduring inclusive new relationship of peaceful co-existence of the two entities.” “ The two sides agreed that within this framework agreement details and execution plan will be worked out and implemented shortly.” Unquote.

What I have understood the meaning of the word ‘Framework’ is the parameter so set by the GoI and the NSCN(IM) within which the points of agreement or competencies would be worked out to which both the parties had agreed and signed it on 3rd August, 2015.

Secondly, as I understood the implication of this sentence, quote “It is a matter of great satisfaction

that dialogue between the Government of India and the NSCN has successfully concluded and we are confident, it will provide for an enduring inclusive new relationship of peaceful co-existence of the two entities.” Unquote. That out of the 18 years of negotiation, from 1997 till 2015, the process of negotiation had been successfully completed to the great satisfaction of both the parties, the GoI and the NSCN(IM). Thirdly, “for sharing the sovereign power as defined in the competencies.” The languages used here do not have any ambiguity, and so I am not confused. It implies that whatever agenda was tabled by both the parties for deliberations during almost two decades of negotiation was exhaustively discussed, scrutinized, found it to be satisfactory to both the parties and nothing was left unattended as the language goes.

The contention here is that the Framework Agreement is without the competencies or other points of agreement within the given parameters as to the layman like myself. The Framework is the frame and it remains to be a mere frame without substance. So long as the Framework Agreement

remains without competencies or points of agreement, it remains to be symbolic as there is nothing to be implemented on ground in letter and spirit. One can understand the implication of the FA better when the matter is compared to that of a childless couple. The GoI and the NSCN(IM) entered into marriage 8 years ago, and yet the marriage failed to procreate and thus hereditary is lost. Similarly, what the Nagas in general can inherit from the FA? It is also understandable from the instance of how the Art 370 for Jammu & Kashmir was abrogated by resolutions adopted in both Houses of Indian Parliament only in 2010 and not otherwise. No such political agreement outside Parliament can supersede an Act of Parliament unless that very agreement is approved by way of amendment of the Art in Parliament to replace the existing article in the Constitution. Also, any amendment to any article in the Constitution or any enactment of any new Art is by 2/3 majority is the constitutional requisite in both Houses of Parliament.

Therefore, the status of 16-Point Agreement of 1960 and

its subsequential Art 371(A) is different from the status of the FA which has not gone to Parliament as yet. In the event of any substance being worked out between the GoI and the NSCN(IM) under FA, which is expected by NSCN(IM) to be of higher status than the Art 371(A) legally, then who the Naga will disagree? Yet, in the event of any agreement with lower legal status impeding the existing Art 371(A) status cannot be accepted.

Till then, the Art 371(A) remains.

What I do not understand the philosophy of NSCN(IM) is why it remains allergic to the Statehood of Nagaland and its Art 371(A).

While many Nagas from outside, whether residing in Nagaland or not have been enjoying the fruit of the Statehood of Nagaland all these years at par with the indigenous Nagas of Nagaland, what obsession is this with Nagaland?

While all the Naga National Political Groups are trying to promote the political status of the Nagas through agreement with the GoI, what does it benefit us to set aside Art 371(A) prior to actual replacement with better status?

Rejoinder to statements of NSF: Regarding the institution of the NC and its legacy

H

istory must be narrated in its bare and brutal truth in the most accurate manner at all costs. It is for this reason that this rejoinder article is necessitated to put the matters in the right perspective in the midst of many misinformation and distortion campaigns launched to tarnish and assassinate the image of the Naga Club (NC) and its history and legacy, and to perpetuate the propaganda of the NSF that the NC Office incumbents without mandate are claiming the NC Building and the plot of land as their own as alleged. However, nothing can be farther from the truth.

1. History of Naga Club and Mandate of the People: (NSF Public Declaration 30th May 2023) The NC formed on 7th Jan. 1918 laid the foundation of the Naga peoples’ rights to self-determination. It was not formed by a mandate of all the Nagas, but that did not deprive anyone from partaking and becoming an equal member of the NC and all that it represented.

“The Naga Club made it possible for every Naga to have a mandate in their right to self determination. The Naga Club did not demand the mandate of the people for its formation and existence.

Rather, it gave the mandate to the Nagas to exist as free people, free from dominion, to be left alone to determine for themselves as in ancient times”. This is clearly stated in the Simon Commission.

The political consciousness expressed in the Simon Commission shaped the political course of the Nagas.

It re presented and spoke and stood up for all the Nagas wherever they were. It is an undeniable fact that over the course of time, the NC fostered unity and brotherhood of the Nagas. It was the institution of the NC that became significant and it was the ideology that was put into action that formed the legacy of the NC. It is this legacy that gives the Nagas the uniqueness of its political struggle. It was never the people who were holding office that was important.

It is the revered institution of the NC that is important and therefore pertinent to preserve its legacy at all costs and by all means. The legitimacy and the relevance of the NC is evident by what it has achieved for the Nagas and what it envisions for the Nagas, and not necessarily by a mandate of the society that has undergone many fractures which the NC desires to heal.

2. Formation of Naga Club and Legitimacy of Office Bearers: (Local Dailies dated 25.07.22) The NC was formed

under the Chairmanship of Rheichalie Pienyü, peshkar, and his team served the NC from 1918 to 1942. The humble yet erudite members of the Club, conscious of the consequences that would follow the departure of the British from the Naga Hills, submitted a Memorandum to the British Statutory Commission under the Chairmanship of Sir John Allsebrook Simon, commonly known as the ‘Simon Commission’, on the 10th Jan. 1929 which became the written Magna Carta of the Naga National Politics, and which has chartered the political history of the Naga people. From 1942 to 1948, Krusiehou Belho became the Chairman and Ziekro-o Theünuo Angami was made the Secy. From 1948 to 1956 Thepfurüya Haralu was the Caretaker, 1956 to 1960 Lungshim Shaiza was Caretaker, 1960 to 1964 Riga Thong was Caretaker, and from 1965 to 1969 Satuo Kuotsu was President and Khymo Lotha, former MP was made Secy. cum Caretaker. For further information, one may go to nagaclub.in for Naga Club Archives For a brief period from 1969 to 1981-82, the NC remained hiatus as the atmosphere was not congenial to hold various activities due to hostile military operations by the Indian security forces against the Naga National Movement (NNM), the intensity of which will never be fully understood by those who were not born at that time to witness. The Naga Elders’ Conference under the Chairmanship of Peselie Suokhrie took the responsibilities of NC. There was a lapse of about 12 years from 1969-1982. On 7th Jan. 1982 at Kohima Vill. Panchayat, under the auspices of the Naga Elders’ Conference including public leaders such as Khymo Lotha, Dr Satuo Sekhose, Satuo Kuotsu, Azüto Rengma, Khriesavisie Hieme, Vilavor Liegise, Kewezü Mero, Pudile Angami, Pastor G Shihani Igha, etc, a large general public meeting was convened consisting of almost all the tribal Hoho representatives, Naga Club members and descendants of Simon Commission signatories, then NC was revived with Azüto Rengma as the Chairman, Vilavor Liegise as the Gen. Secy. and Kewezü Mero as Joint Secy. Mero held his post as Joint Secy. cum Caretaker till 17.08.2017.

On 17.08.2017, again a general public meeting was convened at Red Cross Building Kohima with the representatives of almost all the tribes including Naga Club members and descendants of Simon Commission signatories at the initiative and

the ideology given by public leaders like Khymo Lotha, Dr Satuo Sekhose, Krurovi Peseyie, Niketu Iralu, Rev. L Sorhie, Lhuvitsü Kesiezie, Dr Dietho etc. And the new team of NC took charge of Office headed by Krurovi Peseyie as President and K.N. Mhonthung Lotha as Gen. Secy, who were revered for their ‘unpurchaseable integrity’. The elderly former Office Bearers such as Ex-MP Khymo Lotha and Kewezü Mero are part of the present Office of NC as Advisors till today.

Mero has kept the flame burning and the spirit of Naga Club alive since 7th Jan. 1982 and handed over the mantle to the new team in 2017. He was part of the NC office team that allowed the NSF to occupy the NC Bldg on a rental basis. The present incumbent Office Bearers are duly elected and are a part of the succession of the Office Lineage of the NC to protect and preserve the legacy of the NC and to proactively work for the period of time they have been elected to hold Office. Therefore, it is absurd, ignorant and misplaced to assume that the Naga Club was formed only in 2017/18 as had been alleged by NSF. It is also arrogant and disrespectful to the Naga Club then and the Naga Club now to state that the Office Bearers are not legitimate.

3. Naga Club Bldg and Occupation by NSF as tenants: (Local Dailies dated 25.07.22) Prior to the World War II, the NC Bldg was situated below the Mission Compound and which was used as a Morung as well as free Guest House (GH) with cooking facilities for travelers coming from remote villages.

However, during the war, the Bldg was completely destroyed and the present NC Bldg in its current location was constructed in 1946 on the land provided through the benevolent goodwill of Kohima Village. A Kevichüsa in 1983 had categorically stated that the materials were brought from Dimapur after dismantling a British Officer’s Club which was transported to Kohima using the DC’s pool vehicle. The CGI sheets were purchased by him from Kohima. As for the ownership of the Bldg, A Kevichüsa stated (quote) “It does not belong to the Angamis in particular. Neither does it belong exclusively to the Kohima people nor to the Christians. It belongs to the Naga people as a whole” (unquote). It is for a PanNaga community without discrimination.

During the early period of NNM, the Bldg also served as a meeting place for the functionaries of NNC instead of GH due to the

political turbulence but was used for all the Naga people without discrimination. In fact, the speech of NNC President, A Z Phizo on the occasion of Naga Plebiscite on 16th May, 1951 was delivered from this Bldg.

Taking advantage of the political turmoil following the departure of the British from the Naga Hills, the Indian Army forcibly and illegally occupied the Bldg till the formation of Nagaland Statehood. In 1963, the Directorate of the Forest Dept. occupied the Bldg till the early part of 1983.

On learning that the Forest Dept. were to vacate the NC Bldg by the end of March 1983 and that the Govt. is contemplating to hand over the Bldg to the Directorate of Education, a prominent concerned Naga citizen, alerted Peselie Suokhrie, Chairman, Naga Elders’ Conference and Azűto Rengma, Chairman, NC of the impending taking over by another Govt.

Dept.

The two leaders on affirming the facts immediately met NSF leaders and directed them to lock up the NC Bldg, thereby preventing another Dept. of the Govt. from reoccupying the Bldg. As per the statement of the person who alerted the aforementioned elders, a sum of Rs 600/- was also given to the NSF which facilitated in the mobilization of youths and to purchase an oversized lock to lock the Bldg. After the NC Bldg gate was locked, the DC’s Police came and found the youths around the NC Bldg and saw an unconscionably disproportionately large lock barring the entrance to the NC Bldg. Then they left saying “Oh, it is locked”.

On vacation of the Bldg by the Forest Dept, the NSF vide letter dt 4th April 1983 wrote a letter addressed to the Gen. Secy, NC with the subject “Application for renting the Building of Naga Club”. Accordingly, the NC through an Order Dt 07/04/1983 allotted some rooms of the Bldg to NSF under the condition which states (quote) “with the good consent of mutual understanding under rental basis with effect from the date of issue of this order” (unquote). Thus, it is evident that while the inherent and intrinsic nature of relation between NSF and NC is ‘familial father-son relationship’, the relation between the two entities with regard to the occupation of the NC Bldg by the NSF is that of a ‘transactional Landlordtenant relationship’.

It must be reiterated here for posterity that neither the NC, nor its Bldg belongs to individuals or Office Bearers at any point in time. It

belongs to the Naga people without borders and will continue to belong to the Naga people as a whole irrespective of tribes, communities, domiciles, organizations, religions, genders, age groups, political affiliations including all the diasporas, overseas Naga citizens and communities.

4. Clarification of House Rent: (Local Dailies article dated 25-7-2022) Some people have been misguided to believe that the NC is in a tussle with NSF to gain possession of the land and the Bldg for commercial interest. Kegwayhun Tep, President of NSF had stated, (quote) “The main allegation was the reported non-payment of a monthly rents of Rs 500/- from May 1983 to date” (unquote).

The objective of the NC is solely to reconstruct the NC Bldg and give it back to the people to collectively own the property through the NC, and not for commercial profits unlike the NSF, who without authorization has been found to be renting the NC Bldg and Plot for commercial self-interests, and the rent of which has never been given to the NC. For the sake of posterity, it must be stated for the record that the NC received a sum of Rs 500/- from NSF as house rent payment only for the month of April 1983, and on demand of monthly rent during the tenure of Shri Vilavor Liegise, the then Gen. Secy NC, a mere Rs 50/- or Rs 100/- was paid citing that they do not have money which is a mockery to their elders. However, the Forest Dept. paid a sum of Rs. 1,66,603/- by cheque on 28.03.1988 towards house

rent, for a period of over 19 years wef 1963 to 1983, records of which testify.

However, because the NSF is a Students’ Organization on one hand, where the financial stringency stated in the rental application is duly noted and therefore the non-payment of house rent was never made an issue, nor has it been made an issue even today despite the NC having the legitimacy to do so. Also, on the other hand, every member of the NSF is our own Naga children and Members of NC who will be handed down the legacy of the NC as they represent the coming generations and will lead our society into the future and for which, the incumbents of the Office of the NC have not passed the burden of paying the house rent despite the payment default for 40 years. And not only that, the NC as the paternal and parental body desires to hand over a wellconstructed NC Monumental Bldg befitting the present Naga society for the younger generation to inherit.

Think about environment everyday

As the whole Nagaland celebrated “World Environment Day” on June 5 either by planting trees and plants or by cleaning several areas, one should be remindful that “Environment” should not be a one-day effort but it is something that needs be looked after regularly. With the rise of severe climate conditions, our allegiance should be to try our best and do everything in power to help tackle the climate issues, which is not possible by a ‘one-day’ effort.

Pollution is on the rise and the surge of traffic in Dimapur is no surprise to anyone, we need to start practicing carpooling to prevent release of carbon dioxide that adds to pollution a huge deal. Making judicious use of water, electricity, cleaning our respective areas timely to prevent infestation of disease-borne mosquitos could help all in the long run of self-reliance and self-satisfaction.All of the above are nothing new, it has been taught to us from our early school days, it is time that we put what we learnt into practice and celebrate environment day everyday by thinking about environment and thinking about the sustainable future.

Gujarat villagers chop off Dalit man’s thumb

PATAN, JUN 5 (PTI): A group of people allegedly assaulted a Dalit man and chopped off his thumb after his nephew picked up a cricket ball during a match at a school playground in Gujarat’s Patan district, police said.

The incident took place in Kakoshi village in the district on Sunday, an official said. According to the FIR, the accused got angry and threatened the boy who had picked up the ball while watching a cricket match at a school playground in the village, he said. They also allegedly hurled casteist slurs with the intention to insult and intimidate members of the Dalit community, the official said.

CBI books two former officials in bribery case

NEW DELHI, JUN 5 (PTI): The CBI has booked two former deputy commissioners of the customs department posted at Jawaharlal Nehru Customs House Nhava Sheva for allegedly taking bribes from a middleman for allowing illegal import of goods, officials said. The CBI has alleged that accused Dinesh Fuldiya and Subhash Chandra, through middleman Sudhir Padekar, helped the customs house agents for exploiting “transfer of residence” clause of the Customs Act, they said.

Banned gutkha worth Rs 64 lakh seized

NASHIK, JUN 5 (PTI): Banned gutkha worth Rs 64 lakh was seized on Mumbai-Agra highway in Nashik on Monday and one person has been arrested, a police official said. A mid-size truck was stopped at Ghoti toll plaza on the basis of a tip off and a search yielded 118 sacks of gutkha, which is banned in Maharashtra, he said.

“We look forward to advancing some of those projects during the upcoming visits,” he said, indirectly referring to Modi’s upcoming tour of the US. Describing the USIndia relationship as one of the most “consequential” ones, he said Washington only shares technologies with countries that it absolutely trusts. “There is an increasing desire for us to share (them) with partners here in India.”

Khattar also said that along with the colleges in three districts -- Panchkula, Ambala and Yamunanagar -- colleges in Punjab’s Mohali and Rupnagar districts should also be given affiliation with PU. The first meeting on the issue of affiliation of Haryana colleges was held on June 1 in which Punjab Governor Purohit had flagged the possibility of colleges in neighbouring Haryana to be affiliated with the Chandigarh-based university.

Mann said earlier, maintenance deficit grants to PU used to be shared and paid by Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh in the ratio of 20:20:20:40, respectively.

PATNA, JUN 5 (IANS): While the Bihar government has launched a probe after an under-construction bridge collapsed in Bhagalpur on Sunday, JD-U MLA Sanjeev Kumar has levelled serious allegations against the additional chief secretary of road construction department, Pratyay Amrit, who has been entrusted with the task of conducting the inquiry.

Calling Amrit the ‘real culprit’, Kumar asked that how could the truth come out if the probe is conducted by him.

“The matter needs to be investigated by a sitting judge of the Patna High Court, and an FIR should be filed against Pratyan Amrit,” Kumar said.

The four-lane bridge connecting Sultanganj in Bhagalpur and Aguwani in Khagaria district collapsed for the second time on Sunday. In April 2022, the structure of the bridge

had collapsed due to strong wind and rain. The deadline to complete the bridge has been missed for eight times so far.

Kumar, the JD-U MLA from Parbatta in Khagaria district, was the one who had highlighted cracks in the pillars of the bridge on the floor of the Assembly in March.

At that time, RJD leader and Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav had replied that action will be taken against the construction company and things will be rectified.

“After corruption surfaced for the first time last year, I had met Pratyay Amrit and showed him photographs of the cracks in the pillars but he refused to accept the fact. He showed me a video of a pillar and said that the crack had appeared there and the construction company had demolished the pillar and constructed a new one.

The same pillar collapsed on Sunday,” Kumar said.

PARAMARIBO, JUN 5 (PTI): President Droupadi Murmu met her Suriname counterpart Chandrikapersad Santokhi on Monday and they discussed ways to deepen bilateral cooperation in several areas including defence, agriculture, IT and capacity building.

Murmu, who arrived in Suriname on Sunday on a three-day state visit - her first since assuming office in July last year, received a warm welcome from President Santokhi at the Presidential palace here.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced state government jobs for the family of those who lost their lives in the triple train crash in Odisha’s Balasore.

The West Bengal CM said that relatives of those who lost their limbs in the horrific crash will also be given government jobs.

Banerjee added that her government will also give cash aid to those who were on board the Coromandel Express and are currently going through mental and physical trauma. She will visit Bhubaneswar and Cuttack on Tuesday to meet the injured passengers recuperating in different hospitals.

NEW DELHI, JUN 5 (PTI): India and the US on Monday concluded an ambitious roadmap for defence industrial cooperation to fast-track technology tie-ups and co-production of military platforms such as air combat and land systems, a move that comes in the wake of China’s increasingly aggressive behaviour in the Indo-Pacific region. The new framework for cooperation was finalised during talks between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his visiting American counterpart Lloyd Austin, two weeks ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Washington.

Singh and Austin also decided to initiate negotiations on a framework for the security of supply arrangement and a reciprocal defence procurement agreement, which will promote long-term supply chain stability. The US defence

He also strongly objected to Haryana’s offer of funding the varsity for restoration of the state’s share in it, and asked his Haryana counterpart Manohar Lal Khattar to set up a varsity in any part of his state.

by Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit and PU Vice Chancellor Renu Vig. The Haryana chief minister, however, hit out at Mann for remaining “adamant” regarding the matter and said the move is in the interest of students.

Make customers’ rights charter enforceable, says RBI panel

NEW DELHI, JUNE 5 (IANS): A panel set up by the RBI to examine and review the state of customer service in regulated entities (REs), has suggested that the central bank should consider making the charter of customer rights enforceable after reviewing and updating it. The central bank may consider extending the charter to on Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) also, it has suggested.

The RBI had formed the seven member committee under the chairmanship of former RBI Deputy Governor B.P. Kanungo on May 23, 2022 to evaluate the efficacy, adequacy and quality of customer service in entities regulated by the RBI vis-a-vis the existing RBI guidelines on customer

service and identify gaps, if any. The committee has, in its report submitted to the RBI recently, has suggested the above mentioned measures.

“With a view to ensure that there is uniformity in classifying, recording and reporting of complaints by the REs, the Reserve Bank should lay down a definition of a complaint under the internal grievance redress mechanism which should also capture the complaints which are outside the purview of Reserve Bank’s integrated ombudsman scheme,” the panel has recommended. The committee has suggested further that the RBI Ombudsmen (RBIOs) should be empowered, based on the facts or a set of similar complaints,

to direct the RE concerned to review and undertake suitable corrective action in all such cases and confirm compliance to the Reserve Bank. It has also recommended setting up of an RE - agnostic common portal for lodging complaints, so that the customers of any RE can lodge complaints on a single platform. The portal may allocate the complaints to respective REs, enable facility for tracking of the complaints by the complainant and for automatic escalation of rejected complaints to the internal ombudsmen.

Going forward, the Reserve Bank may also consider integrating this platform with its Complaint Management System (CMS) portal to provide for seamless transfer and movement of complaints and data, the panel has said further.

To improve customer service in REs, the Indian Banks’ Association may update its model operating procedure, in line with regulation, for hassle-free settlement of claims in accounts of the deceased account holders, in various scenarios.

ISLAMABAD, JUN 5 (PTI): The general elections in Pakistan will be held without any delay in October this year, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has said, dispelling speculation about a possible postponement in polls. Political experts firmly believe that only free, fair and timely general elections can bring back desperately-needed political stability in Pakistan, which is also facing a severe economic crisis.

he increasing ability of artificial intelligence (AI) to generate realistic content, such as deep fakes, has caused concern in Hollywood, and the rise of AI is sparking debate among actors, writers, and studios about their compensation and content creation.

The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) recently expressed concern about the rise of AI deep fakes in Hollywood, reports Interesting Engineering.

The actors union is preparing to negotiate la-

bour contracts with studios, and the use of AI is among the top issues.

According to SAGAFTRA Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the actors’ “digital doubles” should be controlled to ensure fair compensation when using their personas.

Actors and writers in Hollywood are concerned that studios will try to cut costs and increase revenue by using AI to generate new content without the assistance and guidance of production.

Moreover, the report said that the celebrities such as Hollywood actors

team of astrophysicists has discovered a new type of cosmic threads hidden in the centre of the Milky Way galaxy.

In the early 1980s, a radio astronomy expert in Farhad Yusef-Zadeh at Northwestern University discovered gigantic, one-dimensional filaments dangling vertically near Sagittarius A*, our galaxy’s central supermassive black hole.

Now, Yusef-Zadeh and his collaborators have discovered a new population of filaments -- but these threads are much shorter and lie horizontally or radially, spreading out like spokes on a wheel from the black hole.

Although the two populations of filaments share several similarities, Yusef-Zadeh assumes they have different origins.A While the vertical filaments sweep through the galaxy, towering up to 150 light-years high, the horizontal filaments look more like the dots and dashes of Morse code, punctuating only one side

of Sagittarius A*.

The findings are detailed in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

“It was a surprise to suddenly find a new population of structures that seem to be pointing in the direction of the black hole,” said Yusef-Zadeh, Professor of physics and astronomy at Northwestern’s Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.

“By studying them, we could learn more about the black hole’s spin and accretion disk orientation.

It is satisfying when one finds order in the middle of a chaotic field of the nucleus of our galaxy,” he added.

To pinpoint the filaments, Yusef-Zadeh’s team used a technique to remove the background and smooth the noise from MeerKAT images in order to isolate the filaments from surrounding structures.

MeerKAT, originally the Karoo Array Telescope, is a radio telescope consisting of 64 antennas in the

Meerkat National Park, in the Northern Cape of South Africa.

After studying the vertical filaments for decades, Yusef-Zadeh was shocked to uncover their horizontal counterparts, which he estimates are about 6 million years old.

While both populations comprise one-dimensional filaments that can be viewed with radio waves and appear to be tied to activities in the galactic centre, the similarities end there.

The vertical filaments are perpendicular to the galactic plane; the horizontal filaments are parallel to the plane but point radially toward the centre of the galaxy where the black hole lies.

The vertical filaments are magnetic and relativistic; the horizontal filaments appear to emit thermal radiation.

The vertical filaments encompass particles moving at speeds near the speed of light; the horizontal filaments appear to accelerate thermal material in a molecular cloud.

There are several hundred vertical filaments and just a few hundred horizontal filaments. And the vertical filaments, which measure up to 150 lightyears high, far surpass the size of the horizontal filaments, which measure just 5 to 10 light-years in length.A The vertical filaments also adorn space around the nucleus of the galaxy; the horizontal filaments appear to spread out to only one side, pointing toward the black hole. Bajrang, Sakshi, Vinesh say won’t take 10 secs to leave jobs; claim stir will go on

NEW DELHI, JUN 5 (IANS): With the top Indian wrestlers, who were protesting against the Wrestling Federation of India’s (WFI) sidelined president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, joining their jobs, there were claims on social media that the players who were set to discard their medals in river Ganga should quit their jobs.

On M o n d ay, Olympians Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh P h o g a t t o o k u m b r a ge to such suggestions and claimed that the people who are trying to discredit them and force them to give up their fight for justice are now coming after their jobs.

In similarly-worded statements, the top wrestlers claimed that when “life is at stake, job is a small thing”.

The statement came on the heels of several reports claiming that the top grapplers have disassociated themselves from the protest and have rejoined their respective government jobs.

on Special Duty (OSD) in the Railways but have not withdrawn their agitation.

“People who dismissed our medals as worth Rs 15 each are now aiming for our jobs. When life is at stake, job is a small thing in such a situation. “If the job is seen to be an obstacle in the way of justice, then we will not take even ten seconds to leave it. Do not show fear of job,” Punia, Sakshi Malik and Phogat wrote in their tweets on Monday.

The wrestlers vehemently denied that they have ended their protest.

Bajrang Punia also put out a video message on Twitter telling people not to believe in rumours and

bogus claims.

In his video message, Punia said that there is no rift among the wrestlers and neither have they withdrawn their allegations nor their complaint against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

“Please don’t believe in claims that there is a rift in the wrestlers.

None of the players have disassociated themselves from the agitation nor have we withdrawn the complaint,” said Bajrang.

He said a campaign is on to discredit them and try and break their unity.

“Delhi Police have through a news agency tried to spread this rumour that the investigation has

been closed as there is no evidence supporting the allegations. Please don’t believe in such claims,” said Punia, claiming that their fight for justice will continue. A few days back, the protesting wrestlers were detained by the Delhi Police during their march towards the new Parliament building.

As the protesters tried to breach the security cordon, a fierce tussle broke out -- the wrestlers and cops pushed, shoved and grappled with one another.

The following day, the wrestlers threatened to discard their medals into the river Ganga in Haridwar and go on an indefinite hunger strike at the India Gate.

The wrestlers had gone to Haridwar claiming that they want to drop their medals in the river Ganga. With many people requesting them, they decided to hand over the medals to the farmers’ leaders to take a call.

The wrestlers will soon take a call on where to resume their protest.

However, Abhinav bowed out in seventh, while Pratham missed out on a medal with a fourth-place finish. Dhanush though was in a different league in the final and led from the start, going from strength to strength, giving none of his opponents a chance.
