IMPHAL, MAY 5: After the Centre on Thursday took control of the entire security apparatus in Manipur, an uneasy calm prevailed in the State on Friday as no fresh violence was reported amid heavy presence of security forces. However, gunfights were reported between security forces and some militants in various parts of the state.

The Army on Friday said that the situation in Manipur has been brought under control through coordinated actions by all stakeholders.

PRO (Defence) Lt Col M Rawat said, the IAF undertook continuous sorties from two airfields in Assam engaging C17 Globemaster and AN 32 aircrafts to ferry troops. PRO said that domination and evacuation of civilians of all communities from affected areas continued throughout the night and flag march in Churachandpur and other sensitive areas were underway.

a fervent appeal to those responsible for looting arms and ammunition from various police posts, to return them at the earliest. The arms and ammunition were stolen by a mob after they overpowered around eight police posts during May 3 violence in Imphal.

“Surrender the arms or we will be compelled to take action. Those who surrender will be spared,” Doungel said, adding that stringent action will be initiated against those who fail to surrender the arms. He also hinted at handing over the case to the NIA. Additional SP (Ops) M Amit said that around seven arms including ammunitions were recovered during an operation at Chingmeirong, Sanjembam and Takhel in Imphal East district.

Further, DGP refuted reports about rape incidents in Churachandpur and termed it as rumours. There have been no such cases in any part of the state, he asserted. He also informed that BJP legislator Vungzagin Valte, who was attacked by mob on Thursday, was undergoing treatment and was “out of danger”.

KOHIMA, MAY 5 (NPN): Even as violence singes neighbouring Manipur with clashes breaking out between the tribal groups and the dominant Meitei community, six injured persons have been hospitalised at a private hospital in Kohima.

While five of these injured were brought to the hospital in the early hours of Thursday, one was admitted in the afternoon.

Speaking to Nagaland Post, Mangminlen, one of those hospitalised, claimed that he was attacked by an unknown mob as he was going to help some injured persons. He had received multiple injuries and had to be given stitches on his head.

Two more-- 35-year-old and 23-year-old youth – with bullet injuries were admitted at the hospital. Three more persons were reportedly admitted at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital as they had gunshot wounds.

Among these three, one of them had received a gunshot in his pelvic bone and sustained other injuries and was said to be in a critical condition. The condition of the other two in the ICU was stated to be stable.

KOHIMA, MAY 5 (NPN): With hundreds of people from Nagaland stranded in Manipur, director general of police (DGP) Rupin Sharma has assured that the State government was taking all measures to evacuate them.

Speaking exclusively to Nagaland Post at his office chambers here on Friday, Sharma disclosed that there were around 200 students at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal and over 50 students at Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal.

He said there could be around 800-900 people stranded in Manipur and claimed that the helpline team was collecting data.

“We have transport fleet like buses and vehicles with escorts ready to go to Manipur and bring back those wanting to come,” the DGP said.

Sharma said people from Nagaland, including the students, were safe and therefore appealed to the people of the State to maintain calm and peace.

Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) has called for enforcement of Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873/Inner Line Permit across Nagaland.

Manipur violence: Organizations call for peace DIMAPUR, MAY 5 (NPN): Several Church bodies and civil society organisations have expressed concern over the violence that has hit the state of Manipur and have appealed for restoring peace and tranquillity.

NBCC: Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) has expressed deep pain and concern over the loss of lives, violence, vandalism, and burning down of churches and institutions in Manipur.

N B C C, t h r o u g h i t s president Rev. Dr. V. Atsi Dolie, appealed to Manipur government and the Centre to respond swiftly in an appropriate manner to settle the prevailing issues. “We urge them to take necessary steps to ensure that the situation is brought under control and that the perpetrators of violence are brought to

justice,” NBCC stated. The council said that the current unrest has affected the lives of many, not sparing even the children, elderly and the sick, and has caused great damage to the community.

NBCC also called upon the people of Manipur to remain calm and give a chance for better alternatives to resolve the issues.

Further, the council also called upon all Baptist churches under NBCC to uphold in prayer for an amicable solution to the present situation. Pray that God will grant healing, peace and comfort to those affected by the unrest and wisdom to those involved in the negotiations and decision-making process, it added.

NBCC said it stands in solidarity with the people of Manipur during this difficult

time and would continue to monitor the situation closely.

The council also urge upon all to work together towards a peaceful and just solution to the current crisis.

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga Friday said that his government is taking steps to evacuate people from the state stranded in violence-hit Manipur.

Zoramthanga also assured the safety of the people of Manipur living in Mizoram.

He urged the central and Manipur governments to make more efforts to end the mob violence in the northeastern state.

“Efforts are on to charter flights to evacuate the state’s residents, especially students and employees stranded in the neighbouring state,” the Mizoram chief minister said in a statement.

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Friday spoke to his Manipur counterpart N Biren Singh and urged him to take care of the Sikkimese students and citizens staying in the state. Singh assured Tamang that the Manipur government will provide all possible assistance to the Sikkimese students and citizens in Manipur, the Sikkim CM said in a social media post.

“I urge all Sikkimese citizens in Manipur to remain calm and carry an identification card with them at all times,” Tamang said, adding that the Sikkimese people should take care of their safety and wellbeing and remain indoors or in a safe location.

DIMAPUR, MAY 5 ( NPN): The North East Catholic Research Forum (NECRF) has expressed it anguish by incidents of violence which resulted in loss of lives and properties and has also strongly condemn such acts of violence, “no matter who the perpetrators were.”

A press release by the media cell of the NECRF stated that it notes with deep concern the systematic attacks on Christian churches, particularly in the valley districts, besides attacks on over 30 tribal villages located in close proximity to the valley districts.

NECRF said that the state government is aware that tribal people, particularly belonging to the Kuki and Zomi communities are being targeted and it fails to understand how in the heart of Imphal with massive deployment of security forces, so many Churches

and localities inhabited by these communities are being soft targeted with impunity.

NECRF stated that it suspect that a police force, “known for its reputation of quelling violent incidents in quick time, perhaps were looking the other way when these attacks took place.”

The NECRF further urged the State and the Centre governments to urgently take preventive measures to ensure the safety and security of all citizens, particularly in the valley districts, which has now become the nerve centres of mob rage against Christians and the tribal people.

NECRF requested both the state and central governments “to ensure action on ground, and not remain complacent by mere issuance of official orders by respective District administrations.”

Correspondent SHILLONG, MAY 5: The Meghalaya government has started evacuating students and civilians from riot-hit Manipur, State Law Minister Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh said on Friday. “Sixty-four students were evacuated from Imphal airport to Guwahati airport in Assam as on Friday. Eight more students will be evacuated on Saturday morning, while another 36 more will be evacuated on Sunday,” Lyngdoh said.

She said the process to evacuate students and civilians from Meghalaya will continue till normalcy returns in that state.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said, “We are bringing back our stranded citizens through regular flights and chartered flights with special permission, who wish to return to Meghalaya. We are working closely with the Union and State governments, security agencies

to ensure that all necessary arrangements are made for the safe return of our students and citizens.” The Meghalaya government has engaged special flights to bring back home the stranded people from Manipur.

“So far, 50 students from the Agriculture University, 10 students from the Food Technology Institute, 25 members of the Lajong football team, and others have been brought from Manipur through these special flights,” a

government statement read.

“The gover nment of Meghalaya, in collaboration with the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Home Affairs, Director General Assam Rifles, Ministry of Civil Aviation, and private airlines, took all essential safety precautions to guarantee the passengers’ safety throughout flight,” officials said.

More than 25 citizens are on the way to Meghalaya via Guwahati today through different flights. Along with flights, special buses are also bringing over 60 students to Meghalaya.

A delegation of three officials led by Health Minister, Ampareen M Lyngdoh, West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, Viveknanda Singh Rathore and others has travelled to Imphal for supporting the evacuation process.

Meghalaya government has also launched a helpline number (1800-345-3644) for citizens who may require further assistance.

GUWAHATI, MAY 5 (PTI): The Gauhati High Court on Friday rejected the anticipatory bail application of Indian Youth Congress president Srinivas BV in the harrasment case filed by the organisation’s expelled Assam unit chief Angkita Dutta.

A bench of Justice Ajit Borthakur said that it is not a fit case to grant the privilege of prearrest bail to the petitioner and as such it stands rejected.

Srinivas had filed a petition in the high court on April 26, appealing for the quashing of the FIR filed

by Dutta, but it was rejected by the court, following which he moved the pre-arrest bail plea.

Dutta had filed a complaint at the Dispur police station in Guwahati, alleging that Srinivas was “persistently harassing and torturing her” for the last six months by making sexist comments, using slang words and also threatening her with dire consequences if she keeps complaining against him to senior office bearers of the party.

Six-year-old washed away in open drain

VIJAYAWADA, MAY 5 (IANS): A six-year-old boy drowned after being washed away in an open drain in Vijayawada on Friday, police said. The boy fell into the drain while playing near his house in Gur unanak Colony in the morning.

Police, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) and the Disaster Response Force personnel launched a search for the missing boy. As the drain was almost full due to recent untimely rains, the rescue teams faced difficulty in tracing the boy. After a search operation lasting for a few hours, the rescue workers found the body of the boy near Bharathi Nagar colony, a kilometer away from the spot where he fell into the drain. The body was pulled out and shifted to hospital.

5 teenagers drowned in Gandak in Bihar

The deceased were identified as Golu Kumar, 19, Halchal Kumar, 18, Rishabh Kumar, 16, and Chotu Kumar, 15, and one more. They came to Begusarai to attend a marriage function held at Bishanpur village under Sahebpur Kamal police station.

NEW DELHI, MAY 5 (IANS): A tenth standard student was stabbed by his classmates in south Delhi’s Tigri area, an official said on Friday.

The police said the accused duo has been apprehended. According to the police, a PCR call was received on Thursday informing about a stabbing incident involving students at a government school in Tigri.

The injured student was admitted to the hospital with stab injuries on his shoulder and back.

SCO meet: India, Pak take veiled swipe at each other

BENAULIM (GOA), MAY 5 (PTI): India and Pakistan on Friday took a veiled swipe at each other at a SCO meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar demanding tough action against cross-border terrorism and his Pakistani counterpart Bilawal Bhutto Zardari calling for not getting caught up in “weaponising terrorism for diplomatic point-scoring”.

In his address at the meeting of the foreign ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) here, Jaishankar said the channel of finances for terror activities must be blocked without any distinction even as Bhutto Zardari raised the issue of “violation of international law” which was seen as an apparent reference to Kashmir.

The SCO norms do not allow raking up bilateral issues and the two foreign ministers did not name any country and made the comments indirectly.

“I can’t disrespect your sentiments. Due to your love, I am accepting the demand that was made to me to withdraw my resignation,” Pawar, 82, told reporters, hours after the NCP panel selected by him to pick his successor passed a resolution that he continue as the party president.

Senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar, who was seen backing his uncle’s decision to step down when he made that announcement on May 2, was not seen at the NCP chief ’s press conference.

Asked about Ajit Pawar’s absence at Friday’s press briefing, Sharad Pawar told reporters, “not all people can be at all places”, and asked media not to read too much in his nephew’s absence.

Fiddling while Manipur burns

F

rom all indications, the ongoing violence in Manipur which has unfortunately led to loss of precious lives and largescale arson and vandalism, is the outcome of simmering discontentment against certain policies of the Biren Singh BJP government. It is also tragic that when Manipur was heading towards rapid development, a path charted by former Congress chief minister O.Ibobi Singh, the spate of violent incidents are derailing the journey. The issues that are being hotly contested are the land survey conducted to evict dwellers in the ‘encroached lands’. There is no debate that under normal laws, encroachment is illegal and those involved are to be dealt with as per the law. However, as the survey was done and eviction carried out in forest reserve areas under hill districts, the affected tribals mostly belonging to the Kuki tribe and various ethnically related tribes, are angry that they have been treated with unjustly. They complain that their homes were bulldozed even before the break of dawn. While the government maintained that the eviction was carried out against poppy cultivators( supposedly refugees from Myanmar), the majority of affected victims deny that. According to reports, those allegedly involved poppy cultivation were working doing it for some person(s) having links with some politicians in the government. Anyhow, not all those who were living inside the encroached forests were poppy cultivators. Further, the tribals maintain that as per Article 370C the tribal areas fall under autonomous councils and that the government had allegedly bypassed them. The other contentious issue that has been the fulcrum of resentment among tribals is the demand by the majority Meitei community for inclusion under Scheduled Tribe category. Tribals of Manipur believe if the majority Meitei community are classed under Scheduled Tribe then they will be at a disadvantage in matters of employment. Their fears rise from the fact that the majority community are already way ahead in education and employment. Another factor, rightly or wrongly that has raised concern, is that jobs under various categories have been filled by Meiteis since there were few ST candidates.It is ironic that meiteis who prided themselves with being high caste and who treated tribals as low cast(Hau) are now asking to be under the same status. Both ST demand and land survey could have been resolved has the state taken the tribal communities into confidence. On the other hand, it needs to be understood that governing a state like Manipur is a herculean task, no matter how efficient any government may be. Manipur has witnessed violent agitations, even in the past including issues involving the tribals and Meiteis. The current conflict will only lead to worsening of communal peace among various people in the state of Manipur. While large majority of people within the Meitei community as well as tribals, are against any provocative move or even confrontation, yet it seems some elements are playing with fire. Even in the past Manipur also had a reputation of being a failed state and it appears that the ghost of the past is trying to return. Unless peace and law and order is restored in Manipur, the problem could even affect other states such as Nagaland and to an extent, Mizoram. The need of the hour is to place Manipur under President’s rule for at least six months so as to get the state back on track.

When we preach, we are not simply proclaiming how people can be saved from hell and be made moral and pure; we are conveying good news about God. In the teachings of Jesus Christ the element of judgment is always brought out— it is the sign of the love of God. Never sympathize with someone who finds it difficult to get to God; God is not to blame.

It is not for us to figure out the reason for the difficulty, but only to present the truth of God so that the Spirit of God will reveal what is wrong. The greatest test of the quality of our preaching is whether or not it brings everyone to judgment. When the truth is preached, the Spirit of God brings each person face to face with God Himself.

If Jesus ever commanded us to do something that He was unable to equip us to accomplish, He would be a liar. And if we make our own inability a stumbling block or an excuse not to be obedient, it means that we are telling God that there is something which He has not yet taken into account. Every element of our own self-reliance must be put to death by the power of God. The moment we recognize our complete weakness and our dependence upon Him will be the very moment that the Spirit of God will exhibit His power.

Sub:- REPRESENTATION O N E N F O RC E M E N T OF BENGAL EASTERN FRONTIER REGULATION ACT 1873/ILP IN THE ENTIRE JURISDICTION OF NAGALAND/ Hon’ble Sir, The Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) is constrained to draw your kind attention on the implementation of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act 1873 vis-à-vis Inner Line Permit (ILP) throughout the jurisdiction of Nagaland with effect from 1st December 1963 as the cut-off date and year for favour of your early necessary action.

It is an undeniable fact that the Nagaland State is created out of Political agreement with 16-Point Agreement of 1960 in place.

Nagaland is then equipped with the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act 1873 vis-à-vis Inner Line Permit (ILP) throughout the jurisdiction of Nagaland.

Among many others the 16th point of the 16-Point Agreement states; quote: “Rules embodied in the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act 1873, shall remain in force in the Nagaland”. This Constitutional status provision is enumerated and well documented for enforcement right from the day and time of the creation of the State of Na-

galand including Dimapur areas- now bifurcated into Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland Districts. The valued agreement as referred to above cannot be altered or substituted at the cost of the future generation of the people of Nagaland. It is a means for survival of the ethnic Naga Tribes of Nagaland in the long run.

On top of it there is standing govt notification to qualify as an “Indigenous Inhabitant” in the state of Nagaland Vide Notification NO. AR8/8/76 dated Kohima the 28th April, 1977. Quote: “The Governor of Nagaland is pleased to decide that in order to qualify as an “Indigenous Inhabitant” of the State of Nagaland for the purpose of employment as envisaged in the order NO. APPT-16/6/67 dated 6/7/73, a person should have settled permanently in Nagaland prior to 1-121963.

(1) His/her name or name of parents or legitimate guardians, in case the person was then a minor should have been entered in the Electoral Roll published on 5-12-1963.

OR (2) The person or his/ her parents or legitimate guardian should have been paying house tax prior to 1-12-1963.

The simple fact is that Government by a notification vide NO. LR/2-118/76 Dated Kohima, the 21st November 1979 constituted another “Tribal Belt” inside Tribal Area already exist ie; “Nagaland which is a tribal state”. Quote: “Whereas under mentioned classes of people are predominantly residing in the areas specified in the scheduled given below: - 1. Any Naga. 2.

Kuki. 3. Kachari. 4. Garo.

5. Mikirs. And whereas sufficient waste land is available in this special area and it is necessary to constitute Tribal Belt or compact area etc...etc, and demarcated the Boundary of Dimapur Sub-Division”.

Now under the direction of the state govt the Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland respectively contemplates to enforce ILP with cut-off date and year wef; 21st November 1979.

The word “Compact area” is mean for development activities but not for identification of indigenous people and hence unacceptable.

That the Tribal Belt or Compact area Order as referred to above itself violates and contradicts the Order NO.LR/2-118/76 Dated

Kohima the 7th November 1979. Quote: “Whereas it is considered necessary by the state govt to adopt protective measures for the under mentioned classes of people who are indigenous inhabitant of Nagaland. etc..etc. 1. Naga.

2. Kuki. 3. Kachari. 4. Garo and 5. Mikirs”.

That justifying the Nagas in Nagaland, state govt has issued a letter Vide No SC-22/Home/1/67 dated 6th July 2009, the “List of recognized Naga Tribes in Nagaland. Namely: 1. Ao. 2. Angami. 3. Sumi. 4. Lotha. 5. Rengma. 6. Konyak.

7. Sangtam. 8. Phom. 9.

Chang. 10. Yimchunger (Now Yimkiung) 11. Khiamnungan. 12. Chakhesang.

13. Zeliang. 14. Pochury, and now Tikhir of Shamator District as the 15th Naga Tribes of Nagaland”.

That the entire Nagaland itself is a tribal state and tribal area and therefore, there is no need for another Tribal belt or Compact area to be curved out of the existing tribal area.

It is also a fact that there cannot be two different cut-off dates and years in a tiny State like Nagaland, ie; 1st December 1963 for the Hill District and another 21st November 1979 for the Districts of Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland. In this connection the Civil Societies are submitting representations after representation to the government since 2014 highlighting the merits of

enforcement of 1-12-1963 as cut-off date and year throughout Nagaland on the basis of the standing government Notification NO. AR-8/8/76 dated Kohima the 28th April, 1977, but remains a deaf ear.

That enforcement of BEFR Act 1873/ILP with effect from the creation of the state of Nagaland on the basis of necessary agreement and Notification as that of 1st December 1963 does not necessarily prohibits the genuine citizens for a business activities or stay or trips in the state as what the people of Nagaland does in other states of the country. There are always mechanism/modalities to welcome them. The Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC), therefore, impress upon your benign authority to look into the grievances as aforesaid and take up the issue on top priority and enforce 1-121963 as cut-off date and year in the entire jurisdiction of Nagaland on the basis of the standing government Notification NO. AR-8/8/76 dated Kohima, the 28th April 1977 as referred to above in the greater interest of justice.

ubjective critic on Article 371 (A) more particularly Clause (IV) Ownership and Transfer of Land and its Resources I am constrained to forward my considered individual views and understanding on the subject in the public domain on observation of the fact that Nagas of today vigorously talk and think about safeguarding Article 371(A), which was inserted in Part XXI of the Constitution of India by Constitution (13th Amendment Act 1962). Yet, as of today in the light of my understanding as an active participant in the political affairs of the State , I am without any measure of hesitation and in unequivocal terms say that the very Constitutional Provision of Article 371(A) more particularly Clause IV has become ‘ispo-facto otiose’ and therefore, sadly redundant.

Prelude of history: We are all aware that the history of the Naga struggle for political emancipation, we find that to do or die for a sovereign independent Naga homeland from the chains of the alien rule and control was seriously started in the early 1950s when the Nagas took voluntary Plebiscite on May 16th 1951, under the spearhead of Naga National Council (NNC). During those decisive and turbulent times, the understanding of the Nagas was:“Nagas are not Indians and Nagaland is not Indian Territory.

The Nagas are not demanding independence from India and the Nagas are not trying to secede from India. The case of Nagaland is a case of aggression. It is war….

The farsightedness of the pioneers in providing Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act 1873 visà-vis Inner Line Permit (ILP) and the govt Notification to qualify Indigenous Inhabitant, which is selfexplanatory, is to insulate Nagaland and its indigenous inhabitants from undue exploitation and possible suppression by outsiders. From the very day the Nagaland was granted Statehood the cut-off date and year to be indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland has been enforced with effect from “1st December 1963” hence the effective date and year of ILP. The above mentioned agreement and notification had not extended to Dimapur areas then with the best reason known to the authority alone. The de-reservation of ILP in Dimapur areas in the initial stage had become the anti-thesis of the policy of reservation.

In fact Dimapur areas becomes the safe haven for the massive migration of illegal immigrants besides being launching ground for the explosive activities, and on, and detrimental to the peaceful atmosphere and tranquillity in the state.

That even after having all these weapons of documents as that of 16-Point Agreement and the Govt Notification at hand, Nagaland government determines to enforce two cut-off dates and years ie; 1-12-1963 for

However, the initiatives so made by the NPC was out-rightly rejected by the then NNC/Federal Govt, and therefore till date the draft memorandum of 16 Point Agreement and subsequent Article 371(A) of the Constitution is never accepted as Final Political Solution. (This aspersion is, till today, the most formidable obstacle and hindrance in the pursuit of honorable and acceptable solution of Naga political issue). However, the delegates of NPC went ahead with their preconceived political agenda and signed the 16 Point Agreement with the Government of India without the popular mandate of the Naga people.

However, agreement being signed before the Honorable Prime Minister of India without the knowledge and affirmation of the Naga people, Article 371(A) was inserted in the Constitution of India by virtue of the 16 Point Agreement of NPC. It is

estimated that Article 371A was by and large propagated by the signatories as the final political emancipation of the Nagas but nonetheless it is observed that there are self-contradicting flaws and undefined paradoxes in the working and implementation of Article 371A. Bare reading of Article 371A squarely reveals that no definition or meaning is given with regard to ownership and transfer of land and its resources which is given in clause IV. This very inherent flaw creates difficulties and confusion in the realm of interpretation. Further observation is that there is no specific legislative power accorded to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly to legislate with respect to the special provision of Article 371(A) Clause IV. This unexplained ambiguity and flaw gave rise to never ending confusion. By all indications, it is observed that Article 371(A) does not per-se (by itself) provide blanket protection and safeguards to its special provisions. Article 371(A) is rather a protective provision but not an enabling provision of law in the Constitution. It is a saddening inherent flaw that Nagaland Legislative Assembly was not accorded the power to make its own law in the enumerated clauses of Article 371(A). If the Nagaland Legislative Assembly could not legislate on the special clauses of Article 371(A) then Nagaland State which was created through a written bilateral political agreement could only Legislate in the enumerated list III in the Seventh Schedule known as State List in consonance with the provision of Article 245 read with Article(s) 246, 247, 248 of the Constitution of India this present arrangement has already made Nagaland State in the same footing with other States in the Indian union who

were otherwise created under State Reorganization Commission in accordance with Article 3 of the Constitution of India. The process for creation of present Nagaland State was preceded by the merger of Naga Hills District in Assam and Tuensang Frontier Division, carved out of NEFA in 1957 to form Naga Hills Tuensang Area (NHTA). In 1960,the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru agreed to the proposal for the 16 Point Agreement that formed the basis for creation of Nagaland State which was later signed with the Naga People’s Convention on July 26,1960. (It was reported that the idea of convening the Naga People’s Convention (NPC) in 1956 was given by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) of Government of India and was patronized by them so as to make the Convention a reality, it is also known that the first draft of the 16 Point Agreement was drafted by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) themselves.

It is a known record that after obtaining the opinion of then legal luminaries like H.M. Seervai, F.S. Nariman, R.C. Sarkar and M. Hidayatullah in the 1980’s all of whom concurred that “Land and its Resources” as used in Article 371(A) Clause IV includes mines and minerals accordingly the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) passed a resolution on July 26, 2010 to the effect that laws made by the Parliament on Petroleum and Natural Gas would be inapplicable in the State of Nagaland with retrospective effect, and subsequently invited “Expressions of Interest”(EOI) from companies to explore and exploit the 11 oil and gas fields it identified across 11 districts in the State. However, this legislative initiative by the Government of Nagaland was extinguished by the Government

It is nowhere seen on the records that the Mines and Minerals (Regulation and Development) Act 1957, has been approved by the Nagaland Legislative Assembly as an applicable statutory law in the state from the date of statehood till date. It is therefore in the light of the above legislative process initiated by the State of Nagaland and the concurrent nullifying executive orders so pronounced by the Union of India the so called sacrosanct provisions of Article 371 (A) more particularly clause 4 which envisaged ownership and transfer of land and its resources has from the threshold to hitherto has failed and has tormented down to non-est bottomless pit.”

FNBA has, therefore, appealed to the government to contain the crisis with wisdom and maturity.

The association also appealed to its federating units in the Northeast to sincerely intercede and pray for the wellbeing of the injured and bereaved families. It also called upon all to pray for normalcy to return at the earliest.

UCFNEI: United Christian Forum of North East India (UCFNEI) has expressed its deep pain and concern over the unrest in Manipur and urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and work towards a peaceful resolution to the situation.

UCFNEI through its spokesperson Allen Brooks called upon all members of society to refrain from engaging in violent acts and to instead engage in peaceful dialogue to address their concerns.

The forum extended condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in the unrest. It also urged the authorities to take appropriate measures to bring the perpetrators to justice.

F u r t h e r, U C F N E I called upon the government to take steps to address the underlying issues that have contributed to this situation and to work towards a lasting solution.

The forum said it stood in solidarity with all those affected by this unrest and pray for peace and reconciliation in the region.

“Such a beautiful state of the country, where people are hardworking and talented. The ‘Kerala Story’ film brings out terror conspiracies happening in that state.”

“It is unfortunate that Congress can be seen standing with this terror trend that is seeking to ruin the country. Congress is even indulging in backdoor political bargaining with people having terror inclinations. People of Karnataka should be cautious about Congress,” Modi added about the opposition party in Karnataka that votes for a new assembly on May 10.

The film, which revolves around a group of women in Kerala who are forced to convert and join the ISIS, was in the news for much of the day -- as

it has been since its trailer released about a week ago.

The film, star ring Adah Sharma, written and directed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Shah, was screened in theatres across the state on the first day of its release. The filmmakers claim it is a compilation of the true stories of three young women from the state. Kerala’s ruling CPI(M) and opposition Congress have said the film falsely claims that 32,000 women got converted and radicalised and were deployed in terror missions both in India and the world.

According to the Kerala High Court, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has examined the movie and found it suitable for public exhibition.

N Nagaresh and Sophy Thomas noted the submission made by the producers that they do not intend to retain an “offending teaser” which contained a statement that “32,000 women” from Kerala were converted and joined a terrorist organisation. The court also noted that the producers have published a disclaimer along with the movie that the film is a dramatised version of events and doesn’t claim accuracy or factuality of historic events.

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan told reporters in Ernakulam that he had not yet seen the film.

“What can be my take... I am not in a position to say anything. But if somebody has... they are saying that this is a story based on actual stories? If

they are claiming that then I think it is the duty of the government to investigate into the matter,” he told reporters in response to questions. There were protests by organisations such as the youth wings of the Kerala’s ruling CPM as well as NCP in several places in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Activists of the Nationalist Youth Congress (NYC), the youth wing of the Nationalist Congress Party, and the Fraternity Movement staged a protest in front of a local theatre in Kerala’s commercial hub Kochi. Holding placards in their hands, the NYC protesters raised slogans in front of the theatre demanding a ban on the movie, which they alleged portrays the southern state in a bad light.

NEW DELHI, MAY 5 (PTI): The Congress on Friday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fulfil his duty towards violence-hit Manipur instead of being busy in election campaign in Karnataka and sought Home Minister Amit Shah’s sacking for his “complete failure” in maintaining peace in the northeastern state. The Congress also demanded President’s rule in Manipur, which has been hit by violence between tribals and the majority Meitei community.

“Modi ji, you are an elected prime minister of the country and the people of Karnataka are also watching what is happening in Manipur and want that you should save Manipur from burning and restore peace

in the state first. “Seeking votes in Karnataka is against your ‘kartavya’ (duty) and we want to remind you that your duty is to save Manipur instead,” Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said. She charged that the home minister has totally failed, and referred to an earlier clash between police forces of Assam and Mizoram and the border rift between Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Manipur violence: Organizations call for peace

NEIRBC: Bishops of North East India Regional Bishops’ Council (NEIRBC) have appealed for restrain and peace in Manipur in the wake of large-scale violence and unrest in Manipur.

NEIRBC president Archbishop John Moolachira said that violence was never the answer for any lasting solution. The council reminded that violence begets violence and it leaves an indelible scar in the mind of the people.

NEIRBC appealed for an amicable solution to the issue through dialogue and implored the people of Manipur to stop all the violence and vandalism and to work towards restoration of normalcy.

Expressing solidarity with all those affected by the unrest, the bishops requested everyone to pray for peace and normalcy in Manipur and across the region.

NH: Expressing deep concern over the incidents of violence and unrest in Manipur, the Naga Hoho (NH) strongly denounced the shoot-at-sight order issued by the Manipur government. Describing the order as “a highly dangerous and vindictive approach”, the hoho said the government order violates the principles of democracy and human rights.

NH through media cell said that the use of force would only escalate the situation and lead to more violence and bloodshed, making it an unsustainable solution to any problem.

NH called upon the Manipur government to immediately rescind the shootat-sight order for peaceful restoration of law and order in the state. It also urged all the parties involved to exercise restraint and work towards a peaceful resolution of the issues at hand.

Further, NH urged the government to take all necessary steps to restore normalcy in the state and protect the safety and security of its citizens.

The hoho expressed belief that dialogue and constructive engagement were the only effective means to address the underlying issues and prevent further escalation of violence.

NH also expressed solidarity with the people of Manipur in their pursuit of peace and prosperity. It called upon all stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions towards finding a lasting solution to the challenges faced by the state.

ENPO: Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) has expressed deep grief over the lives lost and families, friends, and communities impacted by the ongoing communal violence in Manipur.

ENPO expressed solidarity with those affected by these tragic events, which it said were reminders of the importance of unity amongst communities and acceptance of all people.

ENPO also strongly

condemned the burning down of religious places of worship in Imphal.

ENPO has, therefore, appealed to the authority and community leaders to immediately take action and pray for good sense to prevail, which would open up doors for dialogue and negotiations with the stakeholders to avoid further damage and loss of lives.

ENPO further urged all the parties involved to seek an immediate peaceful solution to the crisis.

CNTC: Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) expressed concern over the safety and security of the Nagas and students from Nagaland studying in Manipur due to the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur.

CNTC president T Lanu Imchen stated that many of the students from Nagaland had been stranded in different universities and colleges due to the ongoing unrest. CNTC appealed to the Nagaland government to make necessary arrangements for safety and evacuation of the students before anything happens to those students.

CNTC also expressed solidarity with all those affected by the unrest and appeal for restrain and peace.

APO: Angami Public Organisation (APO) said it was perturbed by the growing escalating violence resulting in loss of many precious lives, damages caused to properties and displacing many people in Manipur.

APO president Razouvotuo Chatsu appealed to the people of Manipur to let the good sense prevail and allow peace and normalcy return in the state.

APO said it condemned any type of violence in the society, adding that a dominant community trying to suppress and exercise diktat over the minorities was highly condemnable. Instead, it said a majority and highly privilege community should show love and compassion to the weaker ones.

APO urged all the warring groups to shun the path of violence and solve any misunderstanding through peaceful dialogue.

It also conveyed solidarity to the tribal people of Manipur in their pursuit to protect their democratic rights. APO expressed displeasure over the mob destroying churches and its properties without any rhyme or reason, which it said was an insult to democracy and secularism as enshrined in the Constitution of India.

APO appealed to the central government to take strong preventive measures by taking the State Government to task and restore peace and normalcy as early as possible.

NSF: Stating that it was deeply perturbed by the ongoing violence and arson in Manipur, the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has called for better sense to

prevail and immediate cessation of all sorts of violence and vandalism.

In a statement, NSF vice president Atokiho Sumi and secretary education Medovi Rhi alleged that thje insensitivity of the Manipur government in its approach towards the issue had instigated the situation to be blown out of proportion.

NSF also strongly condemned all acts of violence, killing and atrocities in Manipur state.

The federation said that the entire region was witness to the many decades of conflict and instability, adding that “our collective aspiration” for lasting peace cannot be negated and held hostage by a few vested interest individuals and groups.

Meanwhile, NSF has appealed to the Nagaland government to take up all possible measures in ensuring the safety and security of the Naga people currently stranded in Manipur.

Further, it appealed to the state government to immediately initiate the evacuation process for the safe passage and arrival of Naga people.

AKM: Ao Kaketshir Mungdang (AKM) has expressed deep concern over the violence that was tak-

ing place in Manipur and strongly condemned the act of violence and arson, which led to the loss of precious lives and disruption the state of normalcy in the region. In a statement, AKM vice president Onenpong and general secretary Satemmongba urged all citizens to remain calm and demanded that violence be reduced immediately.

AKM stated that the alleged magnitude of those attacks represented a concerning increase in violence.

It stated that killing and discriminating against one another would not result in a better solution. Instead, AKM said “we should be wise enough to approach the situation with an open mind.”

AKM has, therefore, urged all communities and groups to reject violence and respect the law in all circumstances.

AKM also requested the Centre and the state government to take immediate action to address the situation and restore order and stability in the affected area ensure that innocent people were not harmed.

NECCC: North East Congress Coordination Committee (NECCC) has expressed pain at the situation in Manipur, where

many people have lost their lives and properties.

NECCC vice-chairman Bobby Panicker stated that people of the North East were always united and love each other like a family. NECCC appealed to all sections of people to maintain peace and restrain from further violence. It also appealed to the Manipur government and the central government to immediately stop the violence and maintain law and order.

“Both governments should compensate the victims,” NECCC said and expressed condolences to the bereaved family members.

WMC: As communal flare ups intensity in some districts in Manipur, the World Meetei Council (WMC) has appealed to all the affected communities to refrain from violence.

In a statement, CECWMC secretary general Yambem Arun Meetei said that any issue involving violence does not bring any positive result.

WMC appealed to the state government and the centre to bring the situation under control without delay and create a favourable atmosphere to bring peace in the state.

Fur ther, WMC expressed appealed to all the

agitators irrespective of communities not to target any religious establishment and people.

DMC: Condemning the violence and animosity that has erupted in Manipur, the Dimapur Meetei Council (DMC) has appealed to all sections to put an end to “this vicious cycle of violence and animosity” and work towards creating a society that is based on peace, harmony, and mutual respect.

DMC through its president Maibam Sanjit and general secretary Ningthoukhongjam Amarjit urged all the citizens of Manipur to come together and engage in constructive dialogue to resolve their differences and work towards a peaceful coexistence.

DMC also implored the communities involved in the agitation to refrain from directing any hostility towards religious institutions.

NEW DELHI, MAY 5 (PTI): Chartered and cost accountants and company secretaries can now be hauled up under the antimoney laundering law for carrying out certain specified financial transactions on behalf of their clients.

According to a notification to this effect issued by the Finance Ministry on May 3, these transactions include buying and selling of any properties and management of bank accounts.

The other categories of transactions listed in the notification are managing client money, securities or other assets; organisation of contributions for the creation, operation or management of companies; and creation, operation or management of companies, limited liability partnerships or trusts, and buying and selling of business entities.

It was further observed that chartered accountants will be equally responsible in terms of penalty and prosecution under the Prevention

of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA).

“The responsibility of the client and CA will be equal if the PMLA provisions are invoked. CAs can now report certain transaction to regulators if they feel that there is a violation of PMLA provision,” they added.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) in a statement said that the accountants have now become reporting entity for the purposes of these specified transactions.

“As a reporting entity they have to do KYC of all clients entering into above transactions and maintain record thereof,” ICAI said.

It further said that ICAI will conduct an awareness programme for its members in relation to such financial transactions which are already prohibited on behalf of one’s client, in the course of his or her profession.

“ICAI will also continue to work with the authorities and other regulators so

that these changes are implemented in the right perspective and role of professionals is understood,” ICAI added.

The government has been tightening PMLA provisions in recent months to check black money.

In March, the ministry had amended rules under the PMLA making it mandatory for banks and financial institutions to record financial transactions of politically exposed persons (PEP).

Also, financial institutions or reporting agencies were mandated to collect information about the financial transactions of the non-profit organisations or NGOs under the PMLA. The government also made it mandatory for crypto exchanges and intermediaries dealing with virtual digital assets to do KYC of their clients and users of the platform.

It notified that entities dealing in virtual digital assets would be ‘reporting entity’ under the PMLA.

In the previous trade, the yellow metal had closed at Rs 62,200 per 10 grams.

15 killed in Congo flooding

KINSHASA, MAY 5 (AP): Rescue efforts were underway after flooding and landslides brought on by torrential overnight rains in eastern Congo’s South Kivu province killed more than a dozen people, a local official said Friday.

Delphin Birimbi, a community leader in Kalehe in South Kivu, said that there were 15 dead in his village and that more than 30 people are missing in the nearby localities of Bushushu and Nyamukubi. He fears that the death toll will rise significantly as more bodies are recovered. Two rivers broke their banks after the heavy rains which began on Thursday evening and there have been multiple landslides with scores of homes destroyed, Birimbi said.

One dead in Nepal chopper crash

KATHMANDU, MAY 5 (IANS): At least one person died and four others were injured in a chopper crash in Nepal’s Sankhuwasabha district on Friday.

The incident occurred when the chopper crashed into a tree in Siprarung.

Birendra Godar, Deputy Superintendent of Nepal Po l i c e s t a t i o n e d i n Sankhuwasabha district, said one Bhawindra Gurung, who was seriously injured in the crash, succumbed. Gurung, who was taken for further treatment to Kathmandu, breathed his last on the way to the airport, Nepal Police DIG, Rajeshnath Bastola of Koshi province told media.

Japanese cop commits suicide at PM’s Office

TOKYO, MAY 5 (IANS): A Japanese police officer allegedly committed in a restroom at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tokyo on Friday, investigators said. The 25-year-old officer of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department (MPD)’s riot squad was found bleeding from the head in the restroom inside the west gate guard station at the Prime Minister’s Office and was taken to hospital but was soon confirmed dead, according to the MPD. A gun was found on the floor near the body and a bullet had been fired, reports Xinhua news agency. No suicide note was found, the MPD said.

TOKYO, MAY 5 (IANS): An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck Japan’s Ishikawa prefecture and its surrounding areas on Friday, but there is no threat of a tsunami, the country’s weather agency said. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the temblor occurred at 2.42 p.m. (local time), at a depth of 10 km, registering an upper 6 on the national seismic intensity scale of 7 in the city of Suzu, upper 5 in Noto and lower 5 in Wajima, Xinhua news reported.

Japan’s child population falls to new low

TOKYO, MAY 5 (IANS): Japan’s estimated child population fell to a new record low of 14.35 million, down for the 42nd consecutive year, latest government data showed.

The number of children aged 14 or younger, including foreigners, came to 14.35 million as of April 1, down by around 300,000 from a year earlier, Xinhua news agency reported citing the Interior Ministry data. The ratio of children to Japan’s total population stood at 11.5 per cent, down by 0.2 percentage point, also the lowest figure since the start of comparable data in 1950, according to the Ministry.

Russia’s Wagner boss threatens Bakhmut pullout in Ukraine

KYIV, MAY 5 (AP): The owner of Russia’s Wagner Group military contractor threatened on Friday to pull his troops out of the protracted battle for the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut next week, accusing Russia’s military command of starving his forces of ammunition and causing them heavy losses. Yevgeny Prigozhin, a notorious millionaire with longtime links to Russian President Vladimir Putin, claimed that Wagner had planned to capture Bakhmut

by May 9. That day is a major Russian holiday marking the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II. But, Prigozhin said, his force hasn’t received enough artillery ammunition supplies from the Russian military since Monday. Known for his bluster, Prigozhin has previously made unverifiable claims and made threats he hasn’t carried out.

COVID-19 no longer a global health emergency: WHO GENEVA, MAY 5 (AP): The World Health Organization said Friday that COVID-19 no longer qualifies as a global emergency, marking a symbolic end to the devastating coronavirus pandemic that triggered once-unthinkable lockdowns, upended economies worldwide and killed at least 7 million people worldwide.

WHO said that even though the emergency phase was over, the pandemic hasn’t come to an end, noting recent spikes in cases in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. The U.N. health agency says that thousands of people are still dying from the virus every week.

“It’s with great hope that I declare COVID-19 over as a global health emergency,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

“That does not mean COVID-19 is over as a global health threat.”

Xi’s government also was one of the biggest exporters of propaganda content, according to Reporters without Borders.

China ranked second to last on the group’s annual index of press freedom, behind only neighbour North Korea.

The ruling Communist Party has tightened already strict controls on media in China, where all newspapers and broadcasters are state-owned.

Websites and social media are required to enforce censorship that bans material that might spread opposition to one-party rule. Xi, China’s most powerful figure in decades, called during a 2016 meeting with journalists who had been awarded official prizes for them to adhere to

“the correct orientation of public opinion.”

Xi is pursuing a “crusade against journalism,” Reporters Without Borders said in a report Wednesday.

It called China’s decline in press freedom “disastrous.”

ISTANBUL, MAY 5 (AP): Ukrainian and Russian delegates have had to be separated after a scuffle during a meeting of Black Sea countries in the Turkish capital Ankara.

Oleksandr Marikovski, a Ukrainian member of parliament, landed several blows to the head of a Russian official after his Ukrainian flag was ripped from his hands during a summit at the Turkish parliament building on Thursday.

KATHMANDU, MAY 5 (PTI): Nepal’s Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has decided to withdraw its support to the Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ government and instead stay in the Opposition, a senior party official said on Friday.

The development comes as the Ravi Lamichhane-led RSP during a joint meeting with the party’s central committee and parliamentary party held on Friday took the decision to withdraw the support that it had been providing to the government, party spokesperson Mod Dhakal said.

However, the decision to withdraw the support will not immediately affect the position of the Prachandaled government, but it may result in a political crisis after some time.

After the RSP won two seats in the by-election held on April 23, Prime Minister Prachanda invited the party to join the government.

BELGRADE, MAY 5 (AP): A gunman apparently firing at random killed eight people and wounded 14 in a series of villages in Serbia, authorities said, shaking a nation still in the throes of grief over a mass shooting a day earlier. Police arrested a suspect on Friday after an all-night manhunt.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic called on Thursday’s shootings an attack on the whole nation — and said the person arrested wore a T-shirt with a pro-Nazi slogan on it but did not specify a motive.

The slayings came a day after a 13-year-old boy

used his father’s guns to kill eight fellow students and a guard at a school in Belgrade, the capital.

The bloodshed sent shockwaves through a Balkan nation scarred by wars, but unused to mass murders. Though Serbia is awash with weapons left over from the conflicts of the 1990s, Wednesday’s shooting was the first at a school in the country’s modern history.

The last mass shooting before this week was in 2013, when a war veteran killed 13 people in a central Serbian village.

ISLAMABAD, MAY 5 (PTI): An Islamabad court on Friday announced that it will indict former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan on May 10 in a case in which he allegedly hid the proceeds from the sale of state gifts.

The Toshakhana case was filed against Khan last year after the Election Commission of Pakistan ruled that he failed to declare the funds he received after selling the gifts given by foreign dignitaries.

A toshkhana is a treasure house where gifts that are received as honour from foreign dignitaries are stored.

Khan, 70, has challenged the maintainability of the case but Additional Sessions Judge Humayun Dilawar of the sessions court dismissed the pleas and objection regarding the jurisdiction after hearing arguments by the lawyers.

The judge announced to indict the accused, Khan and also summoned the chief of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party in person on the day of the indictment.

deferred several times as Khan was not present and his lawyers also pressed to decide the issue of maintainability of the case.

The case is based on the ECP ruling of November 22 last year that decided to hold a trial of Khan and later sent a reference to the court that he had misled officials about the gifts he had received from foreign dignitaries during his tenure as the prime minister.

The cricketer-turnedpolitician is currently facing over 140 cases registered against him under treason, terrorism, murder, attempted murder, blasphemy, and other charges.

LONDON, MAY 5 (AP): A senior Nigerian politician and his wife were handed prison sentences Friday for conspiring to transport a street trader to the U.K. as part of an organharvesting plot. Ike Ekweremadu, former deputy president of the Nigerian Senate, and his wife Beatrice were convicted in March of conspiring to arrange the travel of a 21-year-old man to be a kidney donor for their sick daughter. Ike Ekweremadu, 60, was sentenced to nine years and eight months by a judge at London’s Central Criminal Court. Beatrice Ekweremadu, 56, was jailed for four and a half years and 51-year-old Dr. Obinna Obeta, described by prosecutors as a medical “middleman” in the plot, received a 10-year sentence. The case was the first to convict suspects of an organ-harvesting conspiracy under the U.K.’s modern slavery laws. DIMAPUR: A three-day “Father School” was organised for the inmates of Mon District Jail by Konyak Baptist Bumeinok Bangjüm (KBBB) Ministry of Father School and sponsored by KBBB women department on May 2-4.

in every ULB,” he said.

He pointed out that those bigger ULBs, if they still claim that they cannot pay the salary of their employees then how do “we” survive. In this regard, he encouraged and appealed to all the administrators to pay more attention.

Apart from paying the salary of employees, he said that ULBs were also supposed to provide basic amenities through the resource generated, take care of garbage disposal, waste management among others.

NNC (PB) reacts to WC NNPGs statement DIMAPUR: Reacting to Working Committee, Naga National Political Groups (WC, NNPGs) statement on UNPG NNC (PB) leadership issue, the UNPG NNC (PB) made its position clear that it was still in “unison” with the NNPGs. However, UNPG NNC (PB) president, Z. Royim in a press release, requested the WC NNPGs to not interfere in its cabinet making as each factions have the right to operate its cabinet.

NNC (PB) also said that vice president, Kiviho Zhimomi and general secretary Toshi Walling should not be accepted in any form of decision making in NNPGs as they have been terminated. It further clarified that UNPG NNC (PB) ‘doesn’t have intentions of reconciliation with regard to its leadership” and that its president, Z. Royim was in “fine feather and his age” was “qualified” and will continue to work for the Nagas as there was no “specification for qualification in the NNC Yezabo.” Therefore, UNPG NNC (PB) said it will only acknowledged Z. Royim as the only legitimate leader and denied the charges of bribery and criminal propaganda”. Further Royim clarified that he has no intention of forming a new faction and requested the WC NNPGs to be “vigilant and take ethical decision” so as not to create chaos and factionalism.

World Boxing C’ships: Naveen and Gujarat Titans crush Rajasthan Royals by 9 wkts Hussamuddin storm into pre-quarters JAIPUR, MAY 5 (PTI): Gujarat Titans made light work of a 119-run target set by Rajasthan Royals as the defending champions romped home with a commanding nine-wicket win in a one-sided Indian Premier League match here on Friday.

After bundling Rajasthan Royals out for a mere 118 in 17.5 overs, a 71-run resolute opening stand between Shubman Gill (36) and Wriddhiman Saha (41 not out off 34 balls) set the platform for the huge victory, which was also accomplished with captain Hardik Pandya’s brisk 15-ball 39 not out (3x4s, 3x6s).

Gujarat Titans finished at 119 for one in 13.5 overs, winning with 37 balls to spare. Gujarat Titans thus also got back to winning ways against last year’s finalists Rajasthan Royals, handing them their fourth defeat in an overall five meetings, while consolidating their position at the top of the points table.

BJINJU (KOREA), MAY 5 (PTI): Star Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu’s Asian Championship campaign did not go as per plan as she faltered in snatch and chose not to make her last two clean and jerk attempts to finish fifth here on Friday.

The Tokyo Olympics silver medallist, competing in the 49kg category, managed to lift 85kg in snatch and 109kg in clean and jerk for an overall effort of 194kg, a whopping 13kg less than her personal best of 207kg.

Chanu star ted the snatch with an 85kg lift, which she executed perfectly.

She then set a weight of 88kg as she attempted to match her personal best.

The Manipuri, however, failed to heave the barbell in her next two attempts and had to be content with an 85kg total in snatch.

Four lifters had better snatch results than Chanu, all lifting 90kg or above.

since 2020, head coach Vijay Sharma had told PTI that the former world champion was unlikely to attempt the coveted lift here.

The last time Chanu competed at the Asian Championships in 2021, she had returned home with a bronze medal and a world record in clean and jerk (119kg).

However this time, she only attempted a 109kg lift before deciding not to go for her final two attempts, the reason for which is not known yet.

Sharma has said several times earlier that the aim is to peak at the Asian Games later this year. A medal at the continental multi-sport event is the only one missing from the Manipuri’s trophy cabinet.

Top seed Swiatek took 1 hour and 19 minutes to prevail in the first WTA 1000 clay-court event of the season, improving her dominant head-to-head record against Kudermetova to 4-0. Swiatek has never lost more than six games in a match against Kudermetova.

With this comprehensive victory, Swiatek, for the second straight WTA Tour event, will meet World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka in the final. Sabalenka won the day’s first semifinal over No.9 seed

However, after getting another chance as a lucky loser, the German appears to be making the most of the opportunity as he stormed into his first ATP Masters 1000 semifinal.

The lucky loser upset fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-3 on Thursday night to reach the last four stage at the Caja Magica. The German will next face Aslan Karatsev, who ousted him in qualifying.

Wrestlers’ demands met, should allow probe to complete: Anurag

LU C K N OW, M AY 5 (IANS): Union Minister Anurag Thakur said on Friday that all the demands of wrestlers had been fulfilled and they should now allow the investigation to be completed. Speaking to reporters here, Thakur said, “A demand was there to form a committee and it was constituted, FIR has been registered by Delhi Police, the Supreme Court also gave its verdict. The Delhi Police are conducting a fair investigation. “I request the players that their demands are being fulfilled and they should allow the investigation to be completed.”
