Asked about the stand on Naga political issue and the demand for Frontier Nagaland, he explained that the Naga political issue and demand for separate State were two different issues and did not contradict each other. He clarified that ENPO’s demand was for a separate State within Indian Union and therefore it would not suppress or sabotage the Nagas peace process. He also said ENPO had already briefed the negotiating parties in this regard.

Also speaking to media persons, ENLU secretary and Adviser Land Resources CL John acknowledged that the demand for Frontier Nagaland had started in 2010 and that it was a people’s movement. He said the issue was discussed in the State Assembly in 2012 and a representation was forwarded to the Central government.

However, on the issue of conducting elections, John said the decision was with the Centre since it was a constitutional mandate.

On whether there was any likelihood for granting a separate state-- Frontier Nagaland- John said the ball was in the court of Government of India.

Custodial death: ENLU seeks justice D I M A P U R , AU G 3 1 (NPN): Expressing shock and dismay over the death of Henveih Phom of Anaki C village in Assam police custody, the Eastern Nagaland Legislature Union (ENLU) has appealed to the governments of Nagaland and Assam and the responsible authorities to take up the matter and see that “justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done”.

ENLU chair man S Pangnyu Phom and secretary CL John vehemently condemned the “brutal torture” that led to the loss of life under custody of the law enforcing agency. ENLU said the act of Assam police was “inhumane, unacceptable” and totally against the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution as well as the accepted norms of the International Human Rights Law. The union has conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor to sue AAP leaders over ‘false’ graft charges NEW DELHI, AUG 31 (PTI): Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena today threatened to sue Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders, including MLAs Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj, for “highly defamatory and false” corruption allegations against him.

AAP has alleged that Saxena pressured two employees to change banned currency notes worth Rs. 1,400 crore when he was chairman of a government Khadi body during the demonetization of 2016.

Saxena refuted the AAP charge as a “figment of their imagination”.

“This has been the hallmark of (Arvind) Kejriwal and co. to shoot and scoot and then when pushed for truth, apologise,” said Saxena’s office in a statement.

“The LG has taken a serious view of these blatantly false, defamatory and

obviously diversionary allegations made by these AAP leaders and has decided to take legal action against them so that the AAP does not get away with its characteristic shoot and scoot.”

Saxena said at the time, a vigilance inquiry was called when it came to be known that “certain demonetized notes were deposited in the account of Khadi Gramodyog Bhawan. Four officials were suspended.

When the CBI stepped in, it found that Rs. 17,07,000 in banned notes was deposited and

only two of the officials were involved. The case is still pending in a court, said the Lieutenant Governor’s office.

“The matter being falsely touted by the AAP is with regards to just Rs. 17.07 lakh as against the claims of Rs. 1,400 crore, which is nothing but a figment of imagination for which the habitual liars will face the consequences,” the statement said.

AAP, reacting to the defamation case, called for an inquiry.

“There should be an independent inquiry in this case. The way this case was handled is against the principles of natural justice,” said AAP spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj.

This is the latest flashpoint in AAP’s running feud with the Lieutenant Governor, who represents the Centre in Delhi.

Punjab: Church vandalised, pastor’s car set on fire AMRITSAR, AUG 31 (AGENCIES): Tension prevailed in Thakarpura village in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district on Wednesday hours after some unidentified people vandalised a Catholic church in the village, holding the security guard hostage at gunpoint, and set on fire a car that was parked in the church premises.

According to the police, the incident took place on Tuesday night when some unidentified masked men entered the church, vandalised a statue of Jesus and Mary and damaged the church.

MOSCOW, AUG 31 (AP): Mikhail Gorbachev, who set out to revitalise the Soviet Union but ended up unleashing forces that led to the collapse of communism, the breakup of the state and the end of the Cold War, died Tuesday. The last Soviet leader was 91.

Gorbachev died after a long illness, according to a statement from the Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow. No other details were given.

Though in power less than seven years, Gorbachev unleashed a breathtaking series of changes.

But they quickly overtook him and resulted in the collapse of the authoritarian Soviet state, the freeing of Eastern European nations from Russian domination and

the end of decades of East-West nuclear confrontation.

His decline was humiliating.

His power hopelessly sapped by an attempted coup against him in August 1991, he spent his last months in office watching republic after republic declare independence until he resigned on Dec. 25, 1991. The Soviet Union wrote itself into oblivion a day later.

A quarter-century after the collapse, Gorbachev told The Associated Press that he had not considered using widespread force to try to keep the USSR together because he feared chaos in the nuclear country.

By the end of his rule, he was powerless to halt the whirlwind he had started. Yet Gorbachev may have had a greater impact on the second half of the 20th century than any other political figure.

In his memoirs, he said he had long been frustrated that in a country with immense natural resources, tens of millions were living in poverty. Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev was born March 2, 1931, in the village of Privolnoye in southern Russia.

DIMAPUR, AUG 31 (NPN): Landslide triggered by heavy rainfall has completely cut off some portion of the road between New Peren and Chalkot Junction under Peren district.

According to DIPR report, the road is considered to be the lifeline and shortcut road that leads to Tening sub-division via Mbaulwa range.

The report stated that the landslide was triggered by heavy rainfall that occurred in the afternoon of August 30, 2022. However, no casualties or injuries were reported.

The report further stated that since the onset of monsoon season, the commuters of Tening and Nsong areas have been facing untold hardships and miseries owing to the deplorable road conditions.

NC reminds NSF on vacating Naga Club building Cong chief Sonia Gandhi’s D I M A P U R , AU G 3 1 (NPN): Naga Club (NC), which had served deadline on the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) to vacate the Naga Club building at Kohima on or before August 27, has reminded the federation to communicate with the Club on the action taken.

In a reminder to the Naga Students’ Federation president, the Naga Club president Kuolachalie Seyie and working committee chairman Khriedilhoulie Theünuo reminded that the federation was requested to vacate the building in toto on or before

August 27, 2022, so as to enable building reconstruction. However, the Naga Club said that the deadline of has already expired and the club has not heard anything from Naga Students’ Federation.

It may be mentioned that following Naga Club executive council’s decision to begin the construction

by September 1, the NC on July 12 requested the NSF to vacate the building.

In its letter, NC said that reconstruction of the building was a long-felt need.

The club stated that though NSF was an “en-

deared tenant”, the allotment of the rooms by the then general secretary of the Naga Club Vilavor Liegisie on rent basis was given to NSF in a demi order note specifically mentioned on the body of rental application letter dated April 4, 1983.

It said NSF paid Rs 500 in rent for the month of April 1983 on April 7, 1983, after which the federation never paid Naga Club house rent from May 1983 till date. However, as a student organization, the club said it treated them as children, and therefore never questioned non-payment

of house rent. NC said it consider itself as parents and elders and therefore NSF’s non-payment of house rent has never been made an issue in the past for all these years since May 1983 nor has it been made an issue today, for the same reason.

However, with the passage of time, Naga Club said that its property had undergone the severest of depreciation and stood dilapidated without proper amenities, projecting Nagas particularly the Naga Club and all that it represents, in a very poor light, as though it were in a deep slumber.

The club said it was, therefore, imperative and inevitable to demolish the existing building in its entirety and build a totally new building, well equipped with facilities providing all modern amenities for the welfare of all the Nagas.

However, Naga Students’ Federation had said that Naga Club building in Kohima had been made an “issue of dispute” by some individuals who recently formed a Naga Club and were now not only laying claims as the sole owner of the building in Kohima, but also issuing eviction orders.

NEW DELHI, AUG 31 (PTI): Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s mother Paola Maino passed away at her home in Italy on Saturday and her funeral took place on Tuesday, the Congress said here. Sonia had left on August 23 to visit her ailing mother, who was in her 90s.

“Smt. Sonia Gandhi’s mother, Mrs. Paola Maino passed away at her home in Italy on Saturday the 27th August 2022. The funeral took place yesterday,” AICC general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter on Wednesday.

Eri farmers trained on ‘innovative applications’

D I M A P U R : Two - d ay training on “management practices of silkworm and silk using traditional and innovative applications” for Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) was organised by State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (SAMETI) on August 30-31 at SAMETI, Medziphema.

A press release by SAMETI, Medziphema informed that during the training, the participants were trained on the topic of value addition on ericul-

ture - eri rearing management, eri silkworm pupae pickle, eri finished product, package of practices of castor -cultivation and its management, post-harvest processing of eri cocoons and silkworm (eri) rearing management.

Resource persons for the training were district sericulture officer, Kohima, Vilhousienuo Khro, training assistant, Khrielie Solazuo, extension officer, department of sericulture, Dimapur, Ngoiang Ongh and Petekrietuo Medom.

During the process

of the training, various prospects on rearing of ericulture and silkworm was discussed and shared in uplifting the farmer’s income through different traditional ways of harvesting silk from silkworm and value added products.

The Agricultural Technology Management Agency officials were also taken to a field visit at sericulture farm, so as to encourage and boost the morale of the farmers by understanding the concept of technicalities to modern technique in due course of time.

A press release by Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Zunheboto office stated that a free mega screening of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) was conducted and availed by 200 beneficiaries.

DIMAPUR: Meluri Millet Sisters, in collaboration with Millet Network of India and NEN (Northeast Network) celebrated the 2nd Millet Festival on the theme ‘Celebrating common heritage for a shared, resilient future’ at Meluri Village Council Hall on August 31.

The celebration was graced by SDAO Meluri, Phrumasie Nyuthe as a special guest. According to DIPR report, speaking at the programme, the SDAO stressed on the importance of agriculture, without which, human sustenance

and livelihood will be impossible. Millet, being known as the most tolerable crop for human health, should be preserved and production should be promoted, the chief guest said.

Delivering keynote address, Velazonuo Kikhi, Associate Project Leader, Northeast Network appealed to the people of Meluri and Pochury as a whole to encourage and support millet farmers to uplift the society.

Greeting messages were delivered by Kezunyipeu Tsiihah, chairper-

son of Chizami Women Society, VCC Meluri and VCC Khumiasii. Head GB, Meluri Zuspa Kajiri spoke on the topic “Millet and its cultural significance to Pochury Community.”

DIMAPUR: A six-day Skill Training for Rural Youth (STRY) on the topic, “piggery rearing and management” was conducted by Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) Peren district in association with State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (SAMETI), Nagaland and National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Hyderabad on August 22-27 at Gaili village.

A press release by ATMA Peren stated that the training was organised with the objective to impart skill-based training to rural youths so as to create skilled manpower, promote employment in rural areas and to encourage the youths to take up such ventures for income generation.

Zhimomi stressed on avoiding losses by converting them into value added products and making the produces available during off season. He also encouraged participants to develop skills through the training and to take up income generating activities.

During the training, resource persons delivered lectures on scope and importance of post-harvest management causes of spoilage in fruits and vegetables, processing, packaging, different methods of preservation etc., while hands on practical sessions were also conducted where participants were trained in preparing various value-added products.

Tokheho dissatisfied with departments delaying work

DIMAPUR: Lok Sabha member Tokheho Yepthomi has expressed dissatisfaction with State departments delaying work and their inability to give specific details and take corrective measures, a DIPR report stated.

Attending District Development Coordination Committee and Monitoring Committee DISHA meeting held under his chairmanship at the conference hall of Commissionerate of Taxes here on Wednesday, he asked the committees to seek right information and de-

mand effective follow-up on issues raised during the deliberations.

He appealed to the departments to ensure effective and right methods in dealing with various schemes and submit all the details latest by September.

Yepthomi lamented that Nagaland was still lagging behind while other States were marching ahead in development.

“We need to mend our ways and educate our people, otherwise there will be no development in our State,” he cautioned.

A press release by NCPEDP stated that at the session, fellow (research & advocacy) NCPEDP-Javed Abidi Fellowship, Ngaugongbe, who is also the joint secretary of Nagaland State Disability Forum, highlighted the scenario of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in Nagaland.

He said disabilities issues are rising day by day but the government and society in general was still “lacking in knowledge and actions” in addressing these issues.

PWC: Fire Station, Dimapur-West on August 31 conducted a “Fire and Evacuation Drill” at the premises of Pranabananda Women’s College (PWC) Dimapur. The team educated the students and staff about the safety precautions that needed to be undertaken in fire related incidents either in their residence, shopping establishments or in their places of study. The team also demonstrated about the utility of different types of fire extinguishers and the techniques to operate them efficiently and safely. GHS Medziphema: Government High School (GHS) Medziphema Town on August 31 organised a pre-vocational field trip for its class VI-VIII students to SASRD, NU, Medziphema Campus. GUWAHATI, AUG 31 (PTI): A madrassa in Assam’s Bongaigaon district, which was allegedly used for carrying out ‘jihadi’ activities, was demolished by authorities on Wednesday for “violation of building norms”, a top police officer said. The district disaster management authorities had recently declared that it was “not fit for human habitation” as the building code was not followed during its construction, he said.

Around a dozen of excavators were deployed to demolish the two-storey building of the Kabaitari Ma Arif Madrassa in Jogighopa area of the district, the officer said, adding that other structures on the premises were also razed to the ground. “The district disaster management authorities had issued a notice to the madrassa for violation of building norms and declared that it was not fit for human habitation,” he said. This is the second such action taken by the state administration this week as a madrassa in Barpeta district, which had allegedly sheltered two Bangladeshi operatives of Ansarul Bangla Team for four years, was demolished on Monday.

One of the alleged Bangladeshi terror operatives, the principal, a teacher and another person associated with the madrassa were also arrested by the Barpeta police. The police officer from Bongaigaon said the Kabaitari Ma Arif Madrassa was demolished, following the recovery of incriminating documents related to ‘jihadi’ elements from its canteen during an operation by the Goalpara police on Tuesday night. The Goalpara police arrested the madrassa teacher last week, and the raid was carried out based on inputs provided by him, he said. The arrested teacher had joined the madrassa in 2014, police said.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had recently said that the state was becoming a “hotbed of jihadi activities” with about five modules having links with Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent and Ansarul Bangla Team busted in the last few months.

IMPHAL, AUG 31: Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will begin its party membership drive in Manipur as it plans to set up its base in the state too, a party leader said on Wednesday.

Northeast in-charge of AAP Rajesh Sharma said that the party will scout and launch a membership drive in the state.

Addressing a news conference at Manipur Press Club, Imphal today, he said that the membership drive will begin soon as the party has a plan to contest the upcoming elections to municipal and local bodies.

Elections to municipal and local bodies including Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) and autonomous district councils in hill districts were scheduled to be held before the end of November this year.

The Cabinet of N Biren Singh government had recently decided to hold

the pending elections to the municipal bodies, ADCs along with panchayat bodies before the end of November.

The terms of the panchayat bodies are due to end by September. Sharma said that the decision to begin the party’s membership drive in the state was decided after consultations with party’s leaders and many prominent persons in Imphal recently.

The membership drive is to be done with a house to house campaign and through social media platforms, he said.

Sharma claimed that the popularity of AAP was increasing across the country after seeing the development based politics in the national capital New Delhi.

He said AAP government in Delhi headed by Arvind Kejriwal has brought about good and honest governance and the national capital is almost free from corruption.

This decision was taken on Tuesday at a meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong with officials of the state Urban Affairs department, Shillong Municipal Board and Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) in presence of Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar.

Tynsong said the the 342 families would be relocated to the existing SMB Quarters at Bishop Cotton road and provided housing units in the new location.

GUWAHATI, AUG 31 ( AGENCIES): The people of Tripura witnessed a series of four bomb blasts on late Tuesday night after a gap of fourteen years, reports East Mojo.

The bomb blasts were reported from Sekerkote tea garden area under West Tripura district, which is about 14 km from Agartala city.

The first bomb exploded in front of the gate of a local resident’s house, adjacent to Bikramgar Tehsilder office, followed by the second blast, a little far away from the house. The third and fourth explosions took place at New Market and Motor Stand of Sekerkote area.

The intensity of the blasts were so high that they could be heard from a distance of 4 to 5 kms and the entire area smelled of gun powder. However, no

rise building and all they want is the land and also the cost of building their houses. “We will build our houses. The current quarters where we are staying has not even lasted 20 years as it was built by the government through different builders,” the Panchayat leader said.

The contention of the residents is that the land where they dwell currently was gifted to them by the Syiem (chief) of Mylliem to their forefathers in 1853.

However, the State Government and the Shillong Municipal Board signed a tripartite agreement to take possession of the land from the Syiem of Mylliem.

For more than two decades, several indigenous Khasi civil society groups have demanded from the Meghalaya government to re-locate Sikh residents, living there since British times, from Sweepers Lane as most of them are “illegal settlers”.

The AAP had earlier in the day said it would meet Jaiswal to demand a probe into the alleged attempts to unseat non-BJP governments in various states by the saffron party by poaching legislators under ‘Operation Lotus’.

The 10-member delegation of AAP MLAs reached the CBI headquarters to meet its director at 3 pm even though his office had not given any response to their request for the meeting.

“The CBI must probe the toppling of governments by the BJP and ascertain the source of the money being used for buying MLAs under Operation Lotus,” he demanded.

MLA Atishi, who was part of the 10-member delegation, said the party had earlier sent an e-mail to the Jaiswal’s office seeking an appointment with him but it was yet to get a response.

“We have come here and are demanding that time be given to us (to meet the CBI director) because ‘Operation Lotus’ is a very important issue. The BJP has spent Rs 6,300 crore on ‘Operation Lotus’. Hence, a CBI investigation should be conducted (into the matter) and the source of this money should be ascertained,” Atishi told reporters.

“We are hopeful of being allotted time,” she

added. The BJP has denied the allegations and demanded that AAP MLAs who claimed that they have been approached by the BJP and offered up to Rs 20 crore to switch sides should undergo a lie detector test.

Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had accused the BJP of trying to poach AAP MLAs and topple the Kejriwal government after the CBI raids against him in the alleged excise scam.

Earlier in the day, Atishi said whenever the BJP loses assembly elections in any state, its ‘Operation Lotus’ begins with the use of the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to corner the state government.

Thereafter, the ruling party MLAs are offered money and promised that cases against them will be withdrawn if they join the BJP, she alleged.

Bharat Jodo Yatra aimed at listening to people: Jairam Ramesh C H E N NA I , AU G 3 1 (PTI): The Congress’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ will not be a “speaking” yatra but a listening one where Rahul Gandhi will not give speeches but listen to various sections of the society, senior party leader Jairam Ramesh said on Wednesday.

Gandhi will embark on the padayatra, a foot march, covering about 3,500 km from Kanykumari in Tamil Nadu to Kashmir over about 150 days, on September 7. The yatra will traverse through different parts of the country.

Addressing reporters here, AICC general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the aim of the party was to unite India, against BJP’s ‘divide India.’

The accused leader, who had been evading arrest since a complaint was lodged in the case by her son’s friend, was apprehended from her posh Ashok Nagar locality residence in Ranchi when she had gone there to collect some of her belongings, the police officer said. NEW DELHI, AUG 31 (PTI): The Twitter user behind the arrest of fact checker and Alt News cofounder Mohammed Zubair is a 36-year-old Delhi-based real estate businessman who originally belongs to Ajmer in Rajasthan, police said on Wednesday.

Police officials, who have been working to establish the identity of the Twitter handle @balajikijaiin operating under the name “Hanuman Bhakt”, did not disclose the businessman’s name. They said there is no evidence of his affiliation with a political party.

“The investigation has revealed that the anonymous Twitter handle was operated by a 36-year-old real estate businessman who originally hails from Ajmer in Rajasthan and presently lives in Dwarka,” a police official privy to the probe said.

Police tracked him following a response from

Twitter using an IP address and he was sent a formal notice to join the probe, the official added. The businessman said in his statement to the police that his religious sentiments were hurt.

The official did not share details of when the notice was sent and the statement recorded.

Zubair was arrested on June 27 for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through a tweet against a Hindu deity in 2018. He was in custody for 24 days on allegations of hate speech and is now out on bail.

According to police officials, the businessman took note of the 2018 post and tweeted, tagging Delhi Police and urging it to take action because his “religious sentiments” were hurt.

A complaint was subsequently filed, leading to the arrest.

Two days after Zubair’s arrest, the businessman deleted his Twitter account only to reactivate it the next day with the same name and handle. The account now stands suspended.

The businessman had moved from Ajmer to Delhi some years ago with his family, police said.

NEW DELHI, AUG 31 (PTI): Voices seeking fairness in the upcoming polls to elect the new Congress president grew louder on Wednesday, with party leaders Manish Tewari, Shashi Tharoor and Karti Chidambaram demanding that electoral rolls be made public to ensure transparency in the process.

Congress MP and G-23 leader Tewari raised objections to the party not making public the names of electors for the party president poll, and said it must be published on the AICC website to ensure transparency.

He also asked why anyone seeking to contest the Congress president’s election should go to the PCC office to get the electoral roll as this does not even happen in a club election.

“With great respect Madhusudan Mistry ji How can there be a fair and free election without a publicly available electoral roll? Essence of a fair and free process is names and addresses of electors must be published on the Congress website in a transparent

f there has been any expectation from the recent CSR and Bankers’ conclave held in Kohima recently, where union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman graced the occasion as the guest of honour, it will perhaps follow the saying that ‘the taste of the pudding is in the eating’. As per the information at the close of the three-day conclave, there were committed assurances of around Rs.38 crore through CSR funding. The amount may be small but quite significant in comparison with the almost nil funding. It was also learnt that bankers have also pledged to fund some Rs.200 crore for various projects approved by the state government. All in all, these figures are small but at least some beginning has been made. In her speech, Sitharaman highlighted that calls for CSR will have to have some reality check.

She also encouraged the state government to identify a product from each of the 16 districts.

According to the union minister, on its part, the Centre will come up with viable plans build common facilities for packaging or processing. This assurance from the union minister comes from the premise that Nagaland is sitting atop a wealth of organic products. She also highlighted about the importance of branding of organic products by identifying them with image projection. Organic products are in high demand globally and the market is so huge that it will take quite an effort to supply the need. Another important advice that Sitharaman gave to the young students is to take up study of science and technology which are vital for economic growth through use of latest technology. The strong points of eco-tourism are reflected in the case of Sikkim the ‘organic state of India’ which has not only made its organic products well known across the nation but also its famed floriculture products. Tourism in Sikkim has emerged as the new profession of the Sikkimese people with its vast natural potential.

Promotion of village tourism, homestay, cultural tourism, trekking tourism, ecotourism, wellness tourism, flori-tourism and adventure tourism has given a fillip to the tourism trade in the state where a large number of people are engaged under different employment opportunities. The lesson that can be learnt from Sikkim is that it has harnessed the potential of its people by empowering with relevant skills and thereby creating a mass-based economic movement. A government can only but provide necessary infrastructure such as roads, power, water etc but it cannot run tourism industry by making its bureaucracy as event managers.

Also the government can play a vital role of promoting economic activities by ensuring that there is investor confidence. It goes without saying that investors need to operate in an environment where they feel secure and confident that their enterprises will not be overshadowed by anti-social elements. Nagaland has lost momentum and time for progress. Therefore, the state government has to bell the cat and ensure that it fulfils its constitutional obligations and not shield its wilful neglect by using solution as the red herring.

All that God has done for us is merely the threshold— He wants us to come to the place where we will be His witnesses and proclaim who Jesus is.

Have the right relationship with God, finding your joy there, and out of you “will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38). Be a fountain through which Jesus can pour His “living water.” Stop being hypocritical and proud, aware only of yourself, and live “your life… hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3). A person who has the right relationship with God lives a life as natural as breathing wherever he goes. The lives that have been the greatest blessing to you are the lives of those people who themselves were unaware of having been a blessing.

It is estimated that some 1.40 crore people travel to different countries for better medical treatment every year. In 2019, before Covid-19 struck, 6.97 lakh persons (seven per cent of the total international tourists) travelled to India on a medical visa. It is expected that these numbers will go up rapidly as international

travel opens up. Actually, the pandemic has created more backlogs across the world for elective surgeries like joint replacement.

Different medical tourism destinations have acquired specialisations of sorts. Brazil is famous for cosmetic surgery, Mexico and Costa Rica for dentistry, Malaysia for dental and cosmetic surgery, Indonesia for health check-ups and Thailand for cosmetic and bariatric surgeries and wellness tourism. India has the unique distinction of the availability of all super-specialties, including organ transplantation. It also has a rich tradition of wellness centres and offers ayurveda, yoga etc.

For patients from the developed nations, the main reason to go to developing countries is the low cost. For instance, a joint replacement can cost $35,000-45,000 in the USA, $20,000-25,000 in Israel and $6,000-8,000 in India. A heart bypass would cost up to $9,000 in India against $10,000-12,000 in Thailand, $11,000-12,000 in Singapore and $45,00050,000 in the USA. Then, there are patients seeking cosmetic surgery, fertility treatment and other treatments not covered by health insurance. Canada and the UK

have long waiting lists for elective surgeries, forcing many to seek treatment elsewhere. Some patients, particularly those undergoing plastic surgery or sex change procedures, choose foreign destinations to ensure privacy.

The strength of India lies in the skills of our doctors, support staff and nurses and the state-of-theart infrastructure which is comparable to the best in the world. Many doctors are trained abroad and language is not an issue. India has excellent diagnostic and imaging services, which too are available at one-tenth to one-fifth of the cost in the USA. India has over 35 hospitals accredited by the JCI (Joint Commission International). This tag ensures quality, safety standards and adherence to international norms. India was ranked 10th among the 46 nations on the Medical Tourism Index 2020-21, released by independent information provider MedicalTourism.com.

Many countries are vying to have a greater share of the medical tourism pie. In Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai and South Korea, the governments have facilitated medical tourism through initiatives like the Multiagency Government-Indus-

try Partnership (Singapore) and the National Committee for Promotion of Medical and Health Tourism (Malaysia). Germany and Hungary have broadened their ambit by including state and university hospitals into the game. There are examples of collaborations which transcend borders, like the Harvard Medical School, Dubai Center, and The Johns Hopkins Singapore International Medical Center.

So far, in India, it was left to individual hospitals to market themselves.

They would advertise the foreign qualifications of their doctors to attract patients from abroad. In the last few years, however, the government has taken proactive steps to harness medical tourism. Since August 2019, foreigners can receive any treatment, except organ transplantation, without a medical visa.

In the last few months, a series of strategic moves has been initiated, such as streamlining Medical Value Travel (MVT) and the plan to launch a “Heal in India” project globally to showcase India’s expertise in healthcare. The government has identified over 40 countries from where large numbers of people visit India for medical purposes.

The Health Ministry, along

with the National Health Authority, has developed a multi-lingual portal which is a one-stop shop for services provided by medical travel facilitators and hospitals.

Ten airports with the maximum inflow of patients will offer services like facilitation desks and translators.

Some other initiatives envisaged include health insurance portability by way of giving an extended insurance cover, development of medical enclaves for foreign patients and special wellness tourism zones and capacity-building. A nodal agency, the Medical Value Travel Council, co-chaired by the health and tourism ministries, has been formed to streamline the integration of all stakeholders. To complement these efforts, over 60 startups of medical facilitators have sprung up in key cities; they offer the choice of medical experts and hospitals. They also arrange for the patients’travel, stay, visa, financial aid and, at times, translators, drivers, cooks and even house help.

But, there are some flip sides too. Brain drain in the country towards private hospitals at the cost of the public sector is a concern in Thailand and it would apply to India as well. The risk of infections, including drug-resistant ones,

ork from home’, zoom meetings and a drastic cut down on physical interactions across the table have compelled business organisations to search for a ‘hybrid model’ of running the enterprise, resetting the paradigms for performance evaluation and maintaining the efficacy of human resource development.

Both in India as also in the developed West, organisations are said to be facing a situation where the employees have got used to not going to place of work so much so that they often allow their personal convenience to prevail over the requirements of their organisations.

Employees could even choose to ignore the call from above for a physical or virtual meeting. Evolution of the ‘new normal’ for organisational functioning is work in progress, but many testing points for leadership are already cropping up, demanding a revised strategy for business management and productivity enhancement - in the scene left behind by the Covid onslaught.

Flexible working hours, participative supervision by leaders at various levels, who earlier just gave orders and looked for compliance reports, and a changed framework of boss-subordinate relationship in which the senior would now be required to have some idea of the challenges an employee could be facing on family front, are some major reforms that the organisations have been made to adopt for their own good.

The HRD people in any organisation have found their tasks multiplying and becoming onerous on account of the new-found importance of upskilling and re-skilling, revision of methodology for performance evaluation and the need for working out ways and means of preserving confidentiality of information exchanged by employees on line.

A very crucial test of leadership in a situation of dispersed and distant location of the work force is the effectiveness of communication sent top down on digital media. The days of lengthy letters and notifications despatched in hard copies are over and online communications are the norm now, but this is precisely the reason why

a senior today is going to be judged for his or her ability to choose the right words and expressions in organisational communications.

It is important that the messages are concise, to the point and clear in their intent.

It is said that if you can speak on a subject - as in a conference across the table - you are a master of its content and that if you can write about it, you are the close second best.

Online communications are, therefore, an indicator of a certain perfection of knowledge and the ability of the sender to impart that knowledge to the person at the other end.

Apart from communications primarily meant for exchanging data, anything that a leader conveys must be meaningful, must have connectivity with the larger objectives of the organisation and must evoke interest of the reader.

T h e c o m mu n i c a t i o n should be drafted so as to show that it has a purpose.

Limitation of space in a tweet or a short WhatsApp message cannot be the excuse for arid, arrogant or incomplete communications.

A paragraph can be condensed into a line by a competent communicator. Poor communication skills devalue leadership, while good messaging enhances the image and respectability of the leader.

Covid is a reminder to all organisations that flawless communications are a must for keeping up productivity.

Importance of communication also comes out in the formulation of an organisation’s mission, drafting of the ethical framework and defining of the parameters for performance evaluation. These functions all connect with the leadership and logically make the quality of communications a hallmark of the latter.

It is not adequately realised that communication is a product of the individual’s education and innate wisdom and also a measure of the leader’s ‘emotional quotient’ - considering that all business is ‘human activity’. Therefore, it becomes the prime mover of the organisation’s success.

One of the earliest business advertisements - ‘Lipton’s means good tea’ - remains the benchmark of brief, intelligible and complete messaging.

Three principles of good

communication which will be always relevant are - ‘brevity should not be at the cost of clarity’, ‘it should not lend itself to more than one interpretation’ and ‘the communication should not hurt human sensitivity’.

Success of a senior today depends a great deal on participative supervision, which basically allows a free twoway communication with the juniors, discourages buck passing and establishes an internal transparency that keep the working environ free of favouritism.

Hierarchy-driven organisations often bred the malady of seniors avoiding the responsibility of taking a decision and pushing the ‘files’ up to their superiors - Covid intervention has on the other hand further strengthened the progressive trend of successful organisations becoming ‘flat’ in the sense of delegating the power of decision-making.

A welcome upshot of the Covid era is the greater handson involvement of seniors in work as team leaders and a greater recognition of merit of the individual as the centre of all productivity. This is going to stay as a learning from the past. At the base of all these reforms is the skill of all round communication.

As already mentioned, it is the HRD leaders who face the challenge of reframing the strategy of recruitment, continuing with in-house training in the new environ and changing deployment of the personnel in keeping with the demands of Covid contingency.

Remote handling called for new protocols, new modes of communication and special measures to prevent security breach in a situation of wider online sharing of information.

Programmes of re-skilling for multi-tasking, enhancing organisational loyalty and strengthening quality controls have to be reframed as Covid proved to be a great ‘equaliser’ for business organisations on one hand and putting the focus on competition built around ‘quality’ of product and service on the other.

Communication skills again are central to Social Media Marketing (SMM), which uses the digital outreach to intelligently use personal data to cater to the choices of customers.

Preserving the confidentiality of proprietary information of the organisation requires security orientation programmes for the employees working from remote locations, framing of instructions that were easily understood and a new methodology for conducting the security audit.

HRD-related communications will test the leadership in a more demanding, way but once the organisation gets them right, it would also stand to gain substantially.

Information is the anchor of communication. In an environ of declining physical interactions within the organisation, difficulty about creating a common information grid for employees dispersed in remote locations and the paucity of reliable information itself because of the rise of the phenomenon of fake news on social media, importance of business intelligence has increased manifold and the function of analysis has also gained momentum.

Leadership of the organisation has to measure up to the maxim ‘imagination is more important than knowledge’ -given by no less a thought leader than Albert Einstein.

The capacity to look beyond what the facts in front indicate would set a new benchmark of success for leadership in all spheres - more so for those who are heading business enterprises in the Covid era of uncertainties of both demand and supply and the challenge of ‘delivery’ facing them.

Te c h n o l o g y t h a t h a s brought a new kind of success to global players handling retail, is essentially about meaningful and timely communication.

Broadly speaking, Covid restrictiveness has put a premium on communication and since good communications are a product of intelligent minds, it has ultimately brought overriding importance to the intellectual qualities of farsightedness, total devotion to the mission at hand and - what is equally crucial - compassion, in the leadership guiding the enterprise. It has proved once again that a good leader is a good communicator too.

With no government hospital in India accredited to agencies like the JCI, the onus of medical tourism falls on the private sector which must deliver and stand up to scrutiny. To utilise the infrastructure and expertise in academic institutions, a public-private partnership model of some kind could be forged. The government must ensure that adequate safeguards are built in the system and proper regulatory control is in place. The sector must be organised by way of registration, accreditation and categorisation of MVT facilitators as well as medical service providers to create a trustworthy ecosystem and eliminate the undesirable elements. Indian hospitals could also liaise with overseas insurers and develop joint initiatives with international providers.

he green economy was launched by the UNEP, a United Nation Environment Program in 2008 as initiative to give analysis a policy support for the investment in the environment for greening and green sector.

Green economy aimed at environment sustenance and reduce the potential risk caused to our environment. It also aimed at development of environment without causing any harm to it. With the conception of Green Economy, many start-up firm have built their business around the Green Economy. Firms are beginning to see the viability of a business.

Today due to the rising fuel prices, everyone is beginning to see the importance of alternative energy sources and the people also begin to realize that sources are becoming scarce. With the growing demand for energy and the descending supply of it, everyone is starting to gain interest in the Green Economy. As such more and more startup firms are attempting to tap into and take advantage of the growing interest in the green market. The world today is doing everything to combat Global Warming which is seen as a major threat to future earning of almost each sector in the global economy by the adoption of Green Technology. China is one of the good example to understand what Green Economy would be like in the developed countries. Currently China invest more than any other country in renewable energy.

Another initiative of sustainable development is metrics and indicators. Green Economy and sustainable development are about measuring the transformation which encourage the economic growth. Some of the transformation initiative include that there is less production of carbon oxide, recycling of wastes, and ensuring that the ecosystem is sustainable. The world’s population depends on agriculture for food and provision of employment opportunities. Through sustainable development practices, agricultural yield will double increasing the available of food, reduction of poverty and plenty of water for all.

In conclusion I would like to suggest that one should take up a program to caters green jobs. It will increase their marketability and allow them to get ahead of everyone else. Furthermore a Green Economy has the potential in the path of sustainable development. It can also help to eradicate poverty. A Green Economy can generate as much growth and employment as a brown economy and outperform rowing towards a Green Economy with require world leaders, civil society and leading business to collaboratively engage in this transition. It will required sustained effort on the path of policymakers and their constituents to rethink and redefine traditional measures of wealth, property and well-being.

Masked men vandalise church in Punjab, CM Mann orders probe

AMRITSAR/CHANDIGARH, AUG 31 (PTI): Four masked men allegedly vandalised a church in a village close to the Indo-Pak border in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district, police said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in Takkarpura village of Patti town on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, they said.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann strongly condemned the incident and ordered a probe into the matter, asserting that nobody will be allowed to disturb brotherhood and harmony in the state.

Four masked men entered the church, pointed a pistol at the watchman’s head and tied up his hands before vandalising the church. They also broke two idols and burnt the pas-

tor’s car before leaving, the police said.

CCTV cameras installed inside the church captured the incident.

After the incident, a police team led by Senior Superintendent of Police, Tarn Taran, Ranjit Singh Dhillon reached the spot to take stock of the situation.

Heavy police deployment has been made in the area, the police said.

A case has been registered in the matter and efforts are on to arrest those behind the incident, Dhillon said.

Ordering a probe into the incident, Mann said strict action will be taken against those involved in it.

A group of Christians held a protest against the vandalisation of the church and blocked all routes leading to Khemkaran, Bhikhi-

wind, Patti, Harike and Ferozepur.

The protesters demanded immediate arrest of the accused.

SSP Dhillon, who reached the protest site, assured the agitators that the culprits will be arrested soon.

“It is a conspiracy by some mischievous elements who wanted to disturb peace in the state,” the SSP said.

“We have taken stock of the situation and are investigating the matter. We will soon catch those who were behind this incident,” he added.

Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring also condemned the incident.

He said such incidents are deliberate attempts by some mischievous elements to break the country and divide people.

BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi took a dig at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his Telangana counterpart K Chandrashekar Rao, saying their meeting scheduled for Wednesday is a “get-together of two daydreamers”.

Telangana Chief Minister Rao, popularly known as ‘KCR’, is scheduled to arrive in Patna on Wednesday and meet Kumar as both leaders aspire to build a united front against the BJP’s hegemony. KCR will also be paying cheques of compensation to family members of soldiers who were killed in the stand-off with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh.

Taking a swipe at the meeting, Modi said it is a meeting of two leaders who are losing their base in their respective states and “desiring to become prime minister of the country”. “It is a meeting of two daydreamers who have no standing in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” the BJP leader told reporters. He dubbed the meeting as the “latest comedy show of opposition unity.”

The JMM-CongressRJD coalition in Jharkhand on Tuesday flew its 32 MLAs to Raipur to prevent the BJP’s alleged attempts to poach its legislators.

The MLAs, 15 from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and 17 from Congress, accompanied by senior Chhattisgarh Congress leaders Ramgopal Agrawal and Girish Dewangan, travelled in three buses to the luxurious resort located in Nava Raipur.

While mediapersons are camping in the area in scorching heat in their quest for news and visuals, their entry is strictly barred inside.

All 40-odd rooms at the resort have been booked for

the guests from Jharkhand for the next two days, Congress sources said.

A video of an SUV with ‘Chhattisgarh government on duty’ written on it and carrying liquor bottles allegedly towards the resort went viral during the day, with opposition BJP slamming the Congress government in the state over it.

India’s (GDP grew at 13.5 per cent during the April-June 2022-23 quarter (Q1 FY23), government data showed on Wednesday.

“Real GDP or Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at Constant (2011-12) Prices in Q1 2022-23 is estimated to attain a level of Rs 36.85 lakh crore, as against Rs 32.46 lakh crore in Q1 202122, showing a growth of 13.5% as compared to 20.1% in Q1 2021-22,” Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation said in a statement.

Many analysts had projected the Indian economy will expand at a double-digit growth rate due to the base effect.

Last year, India’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 20.1 per cent yearon-year after witnessing a contraction of 24.4 per cent in the financial year 2020-21

on account of nation-wide lockdown imposed to curb the spread of Covid-19 pandemic.

The GDP had contracted by 23.9 per cent in June 2020 quarter due to the first wave of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India has projected the Indian economy to grow at 7.2 per cent for the current financial year.

According to RBI, India’s GDP is expected to grow at 16.2 per cent in the first quarter followed by 6.2 per cent in the second quarter, 4.1 per cent in the third quarter, and 4 per cent in the fourth quarter of the current financial year. Rating agency Icra in its report has

said India’s GDP growth in the first quarter of the current financial year 202223 is likely to grow 13 per cent, on the back of a low base and robust recovery in the contact-intensive sectors following the widening vaccination coverage.

Govt employees can now Price cap on domestic flight tickets removed avail air travel on LTC

NEW DELHI, AUG 31 (AGENCIES): The central government has issued new guidelines for the Leave Travel Concession (LTC) availed by employees, which will now include air tickets.

The Centre in a missive sent to all central ministries and departments said that the Department of Expenditure’s circular from June regarding air travel on government duty will also be applicable for air travel for LTC, reported The Hindu BusinessLine on Wednesday, Business Standard reported.

The circular stated that air tickets to be availed under LTC shall be only bought from three Authorised Travel Agents (ATAs), which are Balmer Lawrie & Company

Limited, Ashok Travels and Tours and Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation. LTC is an allowance given to employees for meeting travel expenses when the employee is on leave from work. The same is exempted from tax under the Income Tax Act. The memorandum stated, “Government employees are to choose a flight having the Best Available Fare on their entitled travel class which is the cheapest fare available, preferably for Non-stop flight in a given slot, mentioned below, at the time of booking.”

To claim LTC on air tickets, employees will have to keep a print out of the ATAs having flight and fare details, the notice further stated, reported the BusinessLine.

NEW DELHI, AUG 31 (IANS): There will be no cap on air ticket prices from August 31, and airlines will have flexibility in fixing the airfares. However, experts said that high competition among the airlines may lead to benefits for fliers and many airlines may offer discounts as per the demands.

Aviation expert Harshvardhan said: “The move will give flexibility to the airlines in deciding air fares and airlines can charge as per their policies. Airfare cap was more towards the higher side. New airline has come and there is competition in the sector. To attract travelers, some airlines are likely to come up with offers.” An industry source said that

airlines will have freedom to decide on air ticket prices, according to the prevailing market situations. They may raise prices during festive season as higher fares will add to the margins, he said.

Earlier, the Civil Aviation Ministry had said that after review of the current status of Scheduled Domestic Operations vis-a-vis passenger demand for air travel, it has been decided to remove the fare bands notified from time to time regarding the airfares with effect from August 31.

The ministry had imposed lower and upper limits on airfares after the resumption of services in May 2020 following the initial twomonth nationwide lockdown to contain the spread

of Covid-19. Thereafter, the limits were relaxed in a phased manner according to the improvement in air traffic in the country. The lower caps were meant as a relief for airlines struggling after the Covid-19 pandemic.

At the same time, the upper caps on airfares were fixed to ensure that passengers do not have to pay a hefty amount for air travel.

Earlier, discussions on removing the fare bands for domestic airfares were held among the stakeholders including the government authorities and airlines.

Carriers were of the view that removal of the pricing caps is required for the fullfledged recovery of domestic air traffic.

Russian politicians offer mixed view of Mikhail Gorbachev’s legacy MOSCOW, AUG 31 (AP): Russian officials and lawmakers treaded carefully on Wednesday while reacting to Mikhail Gorbachev’s death, praising him for his role in ending the Cold War but deploring his failure to avert the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The stance was reflected by state television broadcasts, which paid tributes to Gorbachev as a historic figure but described his reforms as poorly planned and held him responsible for failing to safeguard the country’s interests in dialogue with the West.

“We agreed on ... full suspension of the European Union-Russia visa facilitation agreement,” he told a news conference at the end of a two-day meeting of foreign ministers in Prague.

“This will significantly reduce the number of new visas issued by the EU member states. It’s going to be more difficult, it’s going to take longer.”

Diplomats said the EU ministers could not agree immediately on a blanket ban of travel visas for Russians as member states were split on the issue.

Borrell said there had been a substantial increase in border crossings from Russia into neighbouring states since mid-July.

“This has become a security risk for these neighbouring states,” he added.

WASHINGTON, AUG 31 (PTI): The United States has concerns about any country conducting military exercises with Russia which has waged an “unprovoked and brutal” war against Ukraine, the White House has said after Moscow announced the Vostok 2022 drills will involve more than 50,000 troops from China, India and several other countries.

Russia said on Monday that the Vostok 2022 military exercises will be held from September 1 to 7 in different locations in the Far East and the Sea of Japan and involve more than 50,000 troops from China, India and several other countries.

NEW YORK/ISLAMABAD, AUG 31 (PTI): UN chief Antonio Guterres will travel to flood-hit Pakistan next week for a solidarity visit and also to see how the UN is working to support the government’s efforts to provide assistance to millions of people impacted by the unprecedented floods.

The visit was announced after cashstrapped Pakistan government on Tuesday teamed up with the United Nations and issued a flash appeal for USD 160 million to deal with the disaster that has displaced over 33 million people in the country that has become the “ground zero” of global warming.

The countr y-wide death toll touched 1,162 on Wednesday, with 3,554 injured and over 33 million displaced, according to the data released by the

National Disaster Management Authority (NMDA), the chief national body tasked to deal with calamities.

In a statement, the UN said on Tuesday that Secretary-General Guterres will travel to Pakistan for a solidarity visit given the “tragic situation facing millions of men, women and children impacted by historic floods.”

The Secretary-General is expected to arrive in Islamabad on September 9 and will then travel to the areas most impacted by the unprecedented climate catastrophe.

Guterres will meet with displaced families and will also witness how the UN is working, in collabo-

ration with its humanitarian partners, to support the government’s relief efforts and provide assistance to millions of people.

He is expected back in New York on September 11.

Pakistan’s Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Asim Iftikhar Ahmad welcomed the UN chief ’s visit, and said: “it will contribute in a big way to our collective effort to highlight the impact of this disaster”.

“His visit will further mobilise international assistance,” he added. Earlier, in a video message on Tuesday on the flash appeal in support of the Pakistan Flood Response Plan, Guterres said the country is “awash in suffering.”

very easy to diagnose with a blood test called a lipid panel. A doctor will take a sample of blood and send it to a laboratory for analysis. The doctor will ask that you don’t eat or drink anything for at least 12 hours prior to the test.

A lipid panel measures your total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. Asia Cup: India beat Hong Kong; enter Super 4

Earlier, Suryakumar Yadav’s fireworks in the last seven overs led him to be unconquered on 68 off just 26 balls and combined with Virat Kohli’s 31st T20I fifty, 59 not out off 44 balls, propelled India

to reaching a daunting 192/2.

In defence of 192, spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravindra Jadeja conceded just 48 runs overall to make up for the 97 runs leaked collectively by young pacers Avesh Khan and Arshdeep Singh to reduce Hong Kong to 152/5 in their 20 overs.

Hardik rises to best-ever fifth spot on ICC T20I all-rounder rankings

DUBAI, AUG 31 (PTI): India’s flamboyant all-rounder Hardik Pandya has jumped eight places to a best-ever fifth position on the latest ICC T20I all-rounder rankings after his excellent outing against Pakistan in the Asia Cup here.

Hardik claimed 3/25 and made 33 not out from just 17 balls, showing how vital his impact will be in India’s T20 World Cup campaign later in the year in Australia.

Elsewhere, Afghanistan’s blistering start to the Asia Cup tournament has not gone unnoticed, with a number of players rewarded in the updated rankings.

An ICC release said Rashid Khan’s push for the No.1 bowler position has been helped with a two-spot jump to third (708 points), over fellow leg-spinners Adil Rashid and Adam Zampa.

Left-arm wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi (716) is next in Rashid’s sights, though Josh Hazlewood (792) boasts a strong margin at the top of the list.

Zeeshan Ali began 19th over by lofting insideout over cover for six off Avesh. Scott McKechnie followed it up with upper cut, flick and neat steer to take a six and two fours in a 21-run over.

Zeeshan then hit successive fours off Arshdeep in the final over, but by then India had all but sealed their second consecutive win in Asia Cup 2022 and a spot in Super four.

Japan Open: Srikanth advances to prequarters; Lakshya, Saina make early exit OSAKA (JAPAN), AUG 31 (IANS): Ace Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth advanced to the men’s singles round of 16 but compatriots Lakshya Sen and Saina Nehwal crashed out in the opening round of the Japan Open 2022 badminton tournament, here on Wednesday.

Former world No. 1 Srikanth outplayed Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia, an All England champion and fifth seed at the BWF Super 750 event, 22-20, 23-21 in a thrilling encounter.

“It was a close match and could have gone either way but I am happy with the way I played. It’s important to close out games at this high level because every match is going to be tough,” Srikanth said after his victory.

“I was leading 16-12 in the first game but found myself behind 20-18 after giving away too many points. I just told myself to be consistent and not give easy points. I am always happy to win and now I will go back and think about how to beat my next opponent,” he added.

Southampton comeback to beat Chelsea 2-1

L O N D O N, AU G 3 1 (IANS): Southampton came from behind to stun Chelsea 2-1 as Adam Armstrong’s goal dealt Thomas Tuchel’s men their second defeat of the Premier League season on Tuesday.

Chelsea hit the front through Raheem Sterling after 23 minutes, but Romeo Lavia’s powerful long-range strike dragged Southampton level five minutes later before Armstrong put the hosts ahead on the stroke of half-time, reports DPA. With Reece James missing through illness, Chelsea struggled to create throughout a disjointed performance, and Kai Havertz squandered their best chance to level after the break.

Rafael Nadal NEW YORK, AUG 31 (IANS): Spanish stalwart and winner of 22 singles majors, Rafael Nadal began his quest for a 23 Grand Slam title defeating Australian Rinky Hijikata 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 at Flushing Meadows to set up a second-round showdown with Italy’s Fabio Fognini on Wednesday (IST).

The four-time US Open champion, competing here for the first time since he clinched the title in 2019, has won 19 of his past 20 matches at the season’s final Grand Slam.

Nadal’s next opponent will be Fognini. The

Italian had rallied from two sets down against the 22-time Slam champion in New York in 2015, though the Spaniard leads the head-to-head 13-4.

Fognini battled past Aslan Karatsev of Russia 1-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 after three hours and 34 minutes.

Hijikata showed no stage fright inside the famed Arthur Ashe Stadium, playing aggressively to keep Nadal from dominating the action.

This was Nadal’s second match since Wimbledon, where he pulled out before the semifinal due to an abdominal injury.

NEW DELHI, AUG 31 (IANS): The Supreme Court has said the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) sells tickets for matches, provides entertainment, receives income from Indian Premier League (IPL), which are commercial in nature, and hence, can be termed as a “shop” for the purposes of attracting the provisions of the Employees State Insurance (ESI) Act. A bench of Justices M.R. Shah and P.S. Narasimha said: “Considering the systematic activities being carried out by the BCCI namely, selling of tickets of cricket matches; providing entertainment; rendering the services for a price; receiving the income from international tours and the income from the Indian Premier League, the ESI court as well as the high court have rightly concluded that the BCCI is carrying out systematic economic commercial activities and, therefore, the BCCI can be said to be ‘shop’ for the purposes of attracting the

provisions of ESI Act.” It said that the BCCI is engaged in systematic commercial activities, a profit earning institution, and is engaged in entertainment industry as it provides entertainment to the customers at a price, by selling tickets, and therefore, it must pass on benefits to its employees by extending the coverage of ESI contribution on the wages payable to the coverable employees.

In the case of Bangalore Turf Club Ltd (supra), the top court observed and held that the ESI Act is a welfare legislation enacted by the Centre as a consequence of the urgent need for a scheme of health insurance for workers and, therefore, liberal rule of interpretation should be adopted to ensure that the benefits extend to those workers, who need to be covered based on the intention of the legislature.

“A narrow meaning should not be attached to the words used in the ESI Act as the ESI Act seeks to insure the employees of covered

establishments against various risks to their life, health and well-being and places the said charge upon the employer,” the top court said.

It observed that the term “shop” should not be understood and interpreted in its traditional sense as the same would not serve the purpose of the ESI Act. And, an expansive meaning may be assigned to the word “shop” for the purposes of the ESI Act. “It is further observed that the activities of the Turf Clubs are in the nature of organised and systematic transactions, and that the Turf Clubs provide services to members as well as to the public in lieu of consideration, therefore, the Turf Clubs are a shop for the purpose of extending the benefits under the ESI Act,” said the top court.

The BCCI submitted that its predominant activity is to encourage cricket/ sports and, therefore, the same shall not be brought within the definition of “shop” for the purposes of applying the ESI Act.
